- 0:07Robert: July 23rd, 2026. Welcome to the Women and Money podcast
- 0:12Robert: as well as everyone smart enough to listen. Hi, everybody, Robert,
- 0:16Robert: the producer here. For today's classic Suze School, we'll go
- 0:20Robert: back to November of 2023 and take on the question
- 0:24Robert: of do we attract or do we repel money.
- 0:28Robert: We'll have a brand new Ask KT and Suze Anything
- 0:31Robert: episode for you this coming Sunday. And remember, if you'd
- 0:34Robert: like to ask a question for the podcast, all you
- 0:36Robert: have to do is email it to podcast@askSuze.com. That's A
- 0:41Robert: S K S U Z E.com, or you can ask
- 0:45Robert: it in the Women and Money Community app, which of
- 0:48Robert: course you can download for free at Apple Apps or
- 0:51Robert: Google Play.
- 0:52Robert: And now... here's Suze.
- 0:58Suze: It was many, many years ago.
- 1:02Suze: And I decided to do an experiment.
- 1:06Suze: And I had somebody gather a whole bunch of red roses,
- 1:12Suze: single red roses.
- 1:14Suze: And this was in New York, and they went onto
- 1:18Suze: the streets, and they were to offer strangers, as they
- 1:24Suze: were walking by a red rose, just one red rose.
- 1:31Suze: And as I was watching this person was offering red roses,
- 1:36Suze: and one person would take it, another person would come along,
- 1:41Suze: that person would take it, and before you knew it,
- 1:46Suze: all of the roses, I think she had two dozen.
- 1:50Suze: All of them were gone.
- 1:54Suze: The next part of the experiment was, that she had
- 1:59Suze: approximately 24 $1 bills, OK, same amount of bills that
- 2:07Suze: she had as roses, and she stood in essentially the
- 2:11Suze: exact same spot.
- 2:13Suze: And as people walked by, she offered them a $1 bill.
- 2:20Suze: How many do you think took it?
- 2:24Suze: One person passed, did not take it. Another person passed,
- 2:29Suze: did not take it.
- 2:31Suze: After approximately 30 minutes of her standing there, not one person,
- 2:39Suze: and in New York, a lot of people pass you
- 2:42Suze: in a 30 minute period of time. Not one person
- 2:48Suze: took the dollar bill. I want you to think about
- 2:51Suze: this for a second.
- 2:53Suze: In a relatively shorter amount of time, 24 people took,
- 2:57Suze: a rose, and smiled.
- 3:00Suze: In a little bit longer period of time, 30 minutes,
- 3:05Suze: not one person took a dollar, and I was just
- 3:11Suze: flipped out about that. I have to tell you, I
- 3:14Suze: talked about it everywhere I went, when I gave a talk.
- 3:18Suze: I just didn't understand it.
- 3:22Suze: But then I started to realize, people don't like to
- 3:26Suze: talk about money, people don't like to touch money, people
- 3:32Suze: think that something's wrong with somebody who's giving a dollar away.
- 3:38Suze: But they'll take something that that $1 would buy, such
- 3:41Suze: as a rose, and that they're willing to take.
- 3:47Suze: And so many of us in our lives are like
- 3:51Suze: that with money whether we know it or not. We
- 3:55Suze: don't mind touching what money can buy. We don't mind
- 3:58Suze: touching those things, whether it's our clothes or our furniture
- 4:02Suze: or our flowers or our gifts or whatever it may be.
- 4:07Suze: We don't mind showing that to everybody and saying, look
- 4:10Suze: what somebody got me. Look at what I just bought
- 4:14Suze: that we don't mind at all.
- 4:17Suze: But yet we don't like to talk about our money.
- 4:21Suze: We don't like to touch our money. We don't like
- 4:24Suze: to say to somebody, Oh, look at how much money
- 4:27Suze: I just made. Look at what I have, even though
- 4:30Suze: the couch that you may be sitting on may have
- 4:33Suze: cost you a whole bunch of money.
- 4:37Suze: That's not how you see it. All you see it
- 4:40Suze: as things. So when something becomes a thing, when money
- 4:45Suze: turns into a thing that has been purchased, then you
- 4:50Suze: will talk about it and touch it. But when money
- 4:53Suze: is just money, you tend to stray away from it.
- 4:59Suze: What is that about everybody?
- 5:02Suze: Think about in your own lives, and by the way,
- 5:05Suze: take out your Suzie notebooks, you are so going to
- 5:07Suze: need it today.
- 5:10Suze: Think about that, everybody. What is it about money, your
- 5:16Suze: money that you work for?
- 5:19Suze: That you spend hours, maybe 40, 50, 60, 70, 80
- 5:23Suze: hours a week working for, why is it that you
- 5:27Suze: don't want to touch it, pay attention to it, or
- 5:30Suze: anything like that?
- 5:33Suze: If you have your Suze notebook out, that is the
- 5:37Suze: question at hand.
- 5:39Suze: So what is it about money that repels you? Answer
- 5:44Suze: that question.
- 5:47Suze: And if the answer to that question is nothing, then
- 5:50Suze: I want you to answer the question, what is it
- 5:54Suze: about money that attracts you? Now, maybe you need to understand, well,
- 6:00Suze: how do I even know if money repels me?
- 6:03Suze: Do you look at your statements? Do you open your
- 6:06Suze: credit card bills right away?
- 6:08Suze: Do you make sure that the dollars, if you have
- 6:11Suze: any of them in your wallets or the $5 bills
- 6:14Suze: or the 10s, that they're all facing the same way?
- 6:18Suze: Do you wait 'till the last minute to pay your taxes?
- 6:22Suze: Do you look at your statements to see what you
- 6:25Suze: have in your 401ks or your Roth IRAs?
- 6:30Suze: Do you pay attention to things like that when you're
- 6:33Suze: watching the news and it's a money segment, do you
- 6:36Suze: turn it off?
- 6:38Suze: So many people used to say to me, Suze, I
- 6:41Suze: like you, but I just can't watch your show. This
- 6:43Suze: is when I was on CNBC and I would say,
- 6:45Suze: and why is that? They say, I just can't deal
- 6:49Suze: with money. I see you and I freak out.
- 6:53Suze: Obviously, I'm known as the money maiden, the money lady,
- 6:57Suze: whatever it is that you wanna call me. So when
- 7:00Suze: you see me, you think about money.
- 7:04Suze: And for those of you who can't stand watching me,
- 7:08Suze: it has nothing to do with me, whether you know
- 7:11Suze: it or not.
- 7:12Suze: It has to do with your repulsion of money, your
- 7:17Suze: inability to deal with it.
- 7:20Suze: If that happens to be you, can you write down
- 7:24Suze: what is it?
- 7:26Suze: About money that repels you. On the other hand, if
- 7:31Suze: you're attracted to it, and what do I mean by that.
- 7:36Suze: I mean, that you see a financial segment, and you
- 7:39Suze: like to watch it. You hear about the markets, and
- 7:42Suze: you like to listen to it. You like to make
- 7:46Suze: sure that your money, your dollars, and your $5 bills,
- 7:49Suze: and $10 bills are all lined up in the right order.
- 7:52Suze: You like to look at your statements. You would like
- 7:56Suze: to look at what your individual stocks are doing or
- 7:59Suze: whatever it may be.
- 8:01Suze: You spend time making sure that you know that you
- 8:05Suze: do not have so much money sitting in a bank
- 8:08Suze: account today, maybe making 0.5% interest or whatever it is
- 8:13Suze: they're paying you. You take the time to take that
- 8:16Suze: money out of a bank account and put it somewhere
- 8:21Suze: that's making a whole lot more interest.
- 8:25Suze: You're actually attracted to dealing with money.
- 8:31Suze: To dealing with the facts about it, to knowing what
- 8:34Suze: are the limits for a Roth IRA or this or that,
- 8:38Suze: anything like that.
- 8:41Suze: So, if that's you, write down what attracts you to money.
- 8:49Suze: Because the answer to that question. Whether it's repelling or
- 8:56Suze: attracting isn't about money.
- 9:00Suze: It's about you.
- 9:04Suze: You know, I have always told you that money is
- 9:07Suze: just a physical manifestation of who you are.
- 9:13Suze: You're the one who works for it, you're the one
- 9:16Suze: who earns it, you're the one who saves it, invests it.
- 9:20Suze: Money can't do anything without you. So if you are
- 9:23Suze: repelled by your money,
- 9:26Suze: There is something about yourself that repels you, that you
- 9:32Suze: don't like, that you're not dealing with.
- 9:35Suze: I just want you to think about that, and if
- 9:37Suze: you are attracted to money, there's something about yourself that
- 9:43Suze: you're attracted to.
- 9:45Suze: Chances are if you're repelled from money, you may also
- 9:51Suze: have what I call a lack of self-worth.
- 9:55Suze: And I will forever believe that self-worth equals net worth.
- 10:03Suze: And as you get older, and you're dealing with money,
- 10:07Suze: you know, it's very easy when you're younger, and I
- 10:10Suze: think I told you this before, I gave a talk
- 10:12Suze: to some whatever I did to some kids, and in college,
- 10:16Suze: and anyway, that's besides the point, and they took such offense.
- 10:22Suze: To when I said self-worth equals net worth, they said, Suze,
- 10:26Suze: I have self-worth, but I don't have any net worth.
- 10:29Suze: Just cause I don't have money doesn't mean that I
- 10:31Suze: don't have self-worth. Oh, grow up. You're in high school,
- 10:35Suze: you're in college, your parents are paying for you. You
- 10:38Suze: don't have to deal with money.
- 10:40Suze: You don't have to go out and get a job
- 10:42Suze: and pay for everything, and take care of a family,
- 10:44Suze: and deal with money. So, don't talk to me about
- 10:48Suze: that you think you know what you're talking about when
- 10:51Suze: it comes to self-worth and net worth, when you're a teenager,
- 10:54Suze: or somebody else is supporting you. I'm talking about you.
- 11:00Suze: Most of you who listen to the Women and Money podcast,
- 11:04Suze: who work for money, who have to support a family.
- 11:09Suze: Who have to deal with credit card debt and inflation,
- 11:13Suze: and feeding yourself and that because why it is all
- 11:17Suze: on you.
- 11:20Suze: So, if the answer to that question is that money
- 11:24Suze: repels you, then in my book, what that is, is
- 11:31Suze: it's a somehow a lack of self-worth, meaning that you
- 11:36Suze: don't feel that you're worthy enough to know about it,
- 11:39Suze: or you have the ability to know about it, or
- 11:41Suze: to understand it, or to do any of that.
- 11:45Suze: You know, you can listen to KT on these podcasts,
- 11:49Suze: and she cannot know the answers to questions and things
- 11:52Suze: like that, but I am telling you, that woman looks
- 11:57Suze: at every single statement that comes in.
- 12:02Suze: And our statements are very thick. She not only looks
- 12:05Suze: at her own, she looks at mine. And because KT
- 12:09Suze: doesn't like computers, she doesn't do it electronically as I do,
- 12:14Suze: but she does do it. I've come out and I
- 12:18Suze: see her with a stack of papers, and she'll say
- 12:20Suze: to me, Suze Orman, do you know that we lost
- 12:23Suze: x amount of money last month?
- 12:25Suze: Or Suze, why are they charging me $6 a trade?
- 12:30Suze: I thought I didn't have to spend any money for
- 12:33Suze: these trades. She watches every penny.
- 12:39Suze: Miss Travis may not be able to answer certain financial questions,
- 12:43Suze: nor may you, but who cares about that? Eventually she will,
- 12:49Suze: and even if she doesn't, she does have the ability
- 12:52Suze: to look up the correct answers. She is not repelled
- 12:56Suze: from money. She is attracted to money. That is because
- 13:01Suze: she values who she is. She has self-worth. She knows
- 13:06Suze: that money is very important, and she knows that because
- 13:09Suze: she knows that her survival is important and she values
- 13:15Suze: her worth. She values who she is, so she values
- 13:19Suze: all of it.
- 13:22Suze: And so she would be one that would be answering
- 13:25Suze: this question by saying, that, yeah, I'm attracted to money,
- 13:32Suze: dealing with money, learning about money.
- 13:36Suze: So this is a really, really important Suze School, and
- 13:41Suze: I'm sorry if I sound a little harsh this morning,
- 13:45Suze: because it means so much to me.
- 13:48Suze: This is the crux of financial freedom, everybody. This is it.
- 13:55Suze: Once you understand the concept that I am talking to
- 13:59Suze: you about right here and right now.
- 14:05Suze: Then you'll never have as much money truthfully as you
- 14:08Suze: should have.
- 14:09Suze: And possibly you'll never have any money at all. How
- 14:14Suze: sad is that? How sad is it?
- 14:18Suze: That may be you. You're the one who's standing in
- 14:23Suze: the way of being an obstacle to your own wealth,
- 14:28Suze: your own financial independence. It doesn't have to be that way.
- 14:36Suze: That is your Suze School, so...
- 14:41Suze: There's only one thing that I want you to say
- 14:44Suze: every single day, and it goes as follows. Today, wherever
- 14:48Suze: I go, I will create a more loving, peaceful, and
- 14:54Suze: joyful world.
- 14:56Suze: And if you do that, you will be unstoppable. Bye-bye now.
