- 0:00This is exciting. All right.
- 0:03Well, how far should we hold these bad boys?
- 0:06Do you think about? You know?
- 0:07Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter.
- 0:08Probably like not. Here I look so I love holding
- 0:12the mic. To me it's like it's aesthetic.
- 0:14Just chilling. I feel like I'm about to drip a
- 0:17rap battle in Detroit. I love it, so here we are.
- 0:21Well, if you're going to do that, you might as well just
- 0:23drop all your floors like Eight Mile does.
- 0:25Yeah, yeah, you, you lead with. Conrad wind properly.
- 0:28Exactly. Yeah, yeah, bro, Us and Wind is
- 0:32crazy, but boat Disciples podcast, but minus we're down
- 0:38one host. No, Brianna tonight.
- 0:39Brianna, maybe next year, maybe not, maybe if you come next
- 0:43year. Next.
- 0:44Year she will be. Yeah.
- 0:46So it is currently right now windy, little bit of clouds, but
- 0:53we've had quite a day. We got out hunting early day,
- 0:57got out hunting early. What did we, what do we get into
- 1:00kind of break it down a little bit?
- 1:01This morning, yeah, we had a slower start because we're out
- 1:05too late on a safari last night. I think we got out like 6:30
- 1:09this morning. Thank you very much.
- 1:10At least twist cap. Yeah, those are.
- 1:12And when you say, when you say safari, I just want to set the
- 1:14stage for a viewer. You mean like it was like a real
- 1:17actual safari, not a hunting safari?
- 1:20No, not a hunting safari. Like lions haunted, a
- 1:23wildebeest, giraffe, Buffalo, like a drive through some wild,
- 1:27wild pots, which is pretty epic. And then see how we got him like
- 1:31midnight. So we had to sleep in a bit.
- 1:34We knew we wanted to go off to Zebra this morning, which is
- 1:36pretty epic, and found them in a spot we've never found them
- 1:39before, which is what we're actually asking for the whole
- 1:42time. And it just didn't work out and
- 1:44didn't work out. Three hours of stalking and then
- 1:47when we said, right, we're going to give them some breathing
- 1:48room, otherwise we're going to just blow it completely.
- 1:51That just happened to be an exact same spot as afternoon one
- 1:54when you landed in South Africa or landed in Elands River
- 1:57Safaris. And I think we both knew like we
- 1:59were, it was actually a bit more of a redemption mission.
- 2:02It was like a get in the exact same spot.
- 2:04They stringed up just twice on that first evening.
- 2:07But we could learn from my mistakes since they are
- 2:10repeating, you know, behavior. And we got it done.
- 2:14Yeah, yeah, no, it was an awesome day.
- 2:16Just, you know, it was one of those stocks that I love where
- 2:19you're making adjustments and kind of letting plays develop.
- 2:22And, and then part of the benefit of of hunting multiple
- 2:26days is that you get to observe animals.
- 2:29And we had seen them walk that route four days prior.
- 2:35They didn't do it any of the days in between, but we knew
- 2:39that, you know, OK, they're trending that way.
- 2:42Then we saw him like at one of the checkpoints.
- 2:43It's like, all right, it looks like they're going right to that
- 2:47day one spot. And we were able to kind of
- 2:50hustle, get there a little quick and get the shot.
- 2:53It still was a bit far, but we were able to get it close to
- 2:56where 80 yards. Yeah, which so we got closer and
- 3:01we're able to make a good shot and, you know, it's been a, it's
- 3:04been a fun trip. You know, obviously one of the
- 3:07interesting parts is how we met. You know what I mean?
- 3:11Like I think, well, I'll kind of introduce you for people who
- 3:15don't know this is outdoors with Travis.
- 3:17He's got a crazy life story, but it's been a hunter for five
- 3:21years, bow hunter for five years and really dove in to it.
- 3:26And obviously the experience you gain living where you do, you
- 3:32can learn a lot more in five years than a lot of other places
- 3:35where it's like there's less access to hunting, especially
- 3:38year round. So you started YouTube.
- 3:41When was that two years? Yeah, just over 2 years ago, I
- 3:44think we were like 2 years, four months.
- 3:45Just over 2 years and why don't you tell the story of kind of
- 3:49how you and I got connected for the first time and like when
- 3:52that was kind of set a timeline? Timeline was probably like 2
- 3:55years ago, very early on in the channel, one of the videos, I
- 4:01was like 4 or five videos deep in quite a few shorts and kind
- 4:03of stuff like that. And you are like one of the
- 4:05first big dogs in the industry to like message me like a
- 4:10comment of encouragement, like keep going, this is some good
- 4:13stuff. You're on the right track kind
- 4:14of vibes. And then since then, I've just
- 4:16been following your stuff and we've every couple of months
- 4:19drop some words of inspiration and it's snowboard from there.
- 4:24Yeah, so. And I think that's such an
- 4:26important story because I think that a lot of people once they
- 4:33get to a certain size, kind of, I don't want to say like act
- 4:38holier than thou, but. They cut off from the order.
- 4:41They try to cut themselves off almost, and I really try to do
- 4:44the opposite and talk to people who are just getting started.
- 4:46Or maybe I've been going a long time and just haven't really
- 4:49seen any growth. Like that's really important to
- 4:51me because I've been there before.
- 4:53And just one YouTube comment that I'd never intended to get
- 4:59anything from you as a person, you know?
- 5:01What I mean? I just wanted to support you,
- 5:03somebody who I saw doing a good job and two years later here we
- 5:07are in South Africa hunting together because you saw say
- 5:11this guy can fit an opportunity well.
- 5:13And I just think there's a lot to just being a genuine person
- 5:18and like wanting others to win. I think sometimes people get so
- 5:22caught up in like, Oh well if they win then I can't win.
- 5:26And to me it's like, bro, there is so much room for multiple
- 5:30people to win. 100%. It's a big endless.
- 5:33It's endless. It's endless.
- 5:35So especially in the YouTube game, like, yeah, an audience
- 5:37can be hooked to five, 6-7 different Youtubers.
- 5:40That's not because someone succeeding that you're not.
- 5:42Yeah, it's such a weird, like it's like a famine mentality.
- 5:46Yeah. But I, I think it's really cool
- 5:48that we linked up and it's just so crazy how it happened because
- 5:51like you said, we weren't, we talked about it on this trip,
- 5:54but I'm not the type who's like a pen pal and just texting
- 5:57someone all day. Like I don't do that.
- 5:58And you probably don't really either.
- 6:00So it wasn't like we talked all the time.
- 6:03It was like here and there, maybe a story reply or
- 6:06something, but it was always we don't.
- 6:08Even talk that much setting up this trip until like the week
- 6:11before. Literally like hardly at all
- 6:14dude. We wouldn't talk for like 3
- 6:15weeks but. So what was that like as far as
- 6:20once we had the trip, you know, like scheduled, locked in, What,
- 6:25what were you thinking coming into it?
- 6:26Having knowing I was flying out here, knowing we were going to
- 6:29be spending a week in the Bush shoulder to shoulder, you
- 6:33hunting with a camera, me hunting with a bow.
- 6:36We've never met. Like what?
- 6:37What was your kind of mindset? Oh number one, I was hoping you
- 6:40weren't a Dick. Unfortunately, I think I found
- 6:43it was a. Long week dude.
- 6:46It has been a long week. I don't blame you, especially
- 6:50hunting with me dude. I'm so I'm so like locked in
- 6:53but. I think we both so passionate
- 6:57and like we said when we're going after the zebra, before we
- 7:00even got the zebra, it was like 3 hours and like 2 hunters,
- 7:05super passionate. We're not arguing, we're
- 7:07debating for the best result. And I think not many people
- 7:10would have the success we've had in 4-5 days on foot that we have
- 7:15because we've been able to, you know, debated art, come to a
- 7:18really good conclusion, set up a plan and attack.
- 7:21Yeah, or set up a plan and sit our asses for three hours and
- 7:25let it play out so I wouldn't say at all it ever got heated
- 7:29Yeah no I arguing, but we're. I love our vibe.
- 7:32It's it's intense. Definitely just never on the
- 7:35same page about wind. That's the funniest thing, like
- 7:38right now, if I were to ask. You, you're a great hearted.
- 7:40Beast, if I were to ask you right now, you'd be like the
- 7:41wind blowing that way, and I would.
- 7:43Be like you're out of. Coming from like.
- 7:46But no, I want to backtrack and I, I do want to get to hunting,
- 7:49like, you know, hunting together and dive into that.
- 7:52But I, I want to know like, what was your mind thinking like when
- 7:56we're, let's say, you know, a flight was purchased, so let's
- 7:59say a month out, like what was, what was your preparation as far
- 8:03as like camera gear? Were you nervous?
- 8:06Were you excited? Were you because like, I'll tell
- 8:09you, for me, this is the trip that's made me the most anxious
- 8:13and I travel all the time. Like I'd fly all the time.
- 8:16It was a. Far.
- 8:17Trip well, it's I've never been it's people I don't know a
- 8:20single person here other than in person and I told you I'm not
- 8:24like I'm an honest guy. I did vet everything like I've
- 8:27found contacts, I've vetted everything because you have to
- 8:30if you're coming so far and people vouched and here we are.
- 8:34But so, but my thought process was I have so many trips after
- 8:39this, like for the next month and a half, two months.
- 8:43This one I looked at as like, dude, I am so like nervous and
- 8:46sort of anxious for some reason to do this huge journey a so
- 8:50much unknown. But when I'm done with it, I'm
- 8:54going to feel like I'm just like, like I'm chill, you know
- 8:59what I mean? So that was kind of my approach,
- 9:01obviously with excitement, you know what I mean?
- 9:03Like if I could describe it. So what was yours kind of like?
- 9:06What were you thinking? Not much stresses me out.
- 9:10That's keen you were. Keen.
- 9:11I was just, yeah, that's how weird.
- 9:13I know. It's how weird.
- 9:14I know and I love it. I.
- 9:15Was keen. I had all the camera gear.
- 9:17I didn't have to get anything else.
- 9:18I didn't have to prepare anything.
- 9:19I had to get the guys ready because obviously we got a lot
- 9:22of renovations at Elance River Safari that are like first June
- 9:25Go Live and making sure that they're ready to cater for you
- 9:29and that kind of stuff. But other than that, dude, we
- 9:32just needed to get you and start hunting.
- 9:33There wasn't much to it. Yeah.
- 9:35And see, that's dope. Yeah.
- 9:37And I, I wouldn't say like I was nervous.
- 9:39I was just more so like, this was a big trip.
- 9:42It was a first timer. First time yeah and and and it's
- 9:45always tougher when you don't know even a even you don't know
- 9:49anyone who's even been to where you're going like you know what
- 9:52I mean? Like directly where you're
- 9:53going. It's just like a lot.
- 9:54But dude, when I get back from this, like we got Oklahoma Total
- 9:58Archery Challenge or literally a week after I get back, we fly
- 10:00out and I'm like, bro, that's going to be such like just a
- 10:05vacation for me, bro, Like I can't.
- 10:07Wait, it's going to be so mellow, you know?
- 10:09Compared to this. Compared to this just because
- 10:11like I know what it is like. It's predictable for you.
- 10:14Yeah, like flying to Oklahoma is like, I know what like Oklahoma
- 10:17going to be but but yeah. So let's let's dive into, you
- 10:22know, so we, we show up the first day, we get here around
- 10:25noon and then we actually put in a pretty, pretty like we get
- 10:29straight out in the Bush. We really don't think around.
- 10:31We get out there, we have an action-packed day.
- 10:34We don't end up getting anything.
- 10:36But what was your first thoughts of like just hunting together,
- 10:41like how our hunting styles blended?
- 10:43Like what did you kind of what were you feeling after the first
- 10:46day? So that's actually so cool
- 10:47because you've brought one of my worries that I, I was so worried
- 10:51that you were like a YouTube hunter, like someone that wanted
- 10:56it to look hardcore and film, but like in reality it was like
- 10:59right there and it was chilled and it wasn't even running away.
- 11:02And like we had to add music and everything to dramatize it.
- 11:05So I really like to see like you're super patient.
- 11:07You're willing to sit for like 4 hours behind the Bush and that
- 11:10the animals make the next move and like just some real hunting
- 11:14and, and that was pretty cool for me to see.
- 11:17That's that's what I noticed right out the gates is that you
- 11:21are willing to sit for hours instead of like trying to force
- 11:24a play, which is quite cool. For sure, yeah.
- 11:26And that first day was sure a lot of fun.
- 11:29But tell me about the. We learned a lot of lessons on
- 11:31that first day. Oh yeah, very quickly.
- 11:33It was it was a lot of fun, you know, like it's so unusual for a
- 11:37guy like me who's only ever haunted 90 almost only ever
- 11:43public land on drawn tags or over the counter tags.
- 11:48And I've haunted like private locally a little bit.
- 11:50But these are like, you know, the animals are still like
- 11:54they're on public and private. They just like move in and out,
- 11:56you know, But it's just so much different.
- 11:59The amount of like you put it best dude, it's it's really
- 12:03rapid fire stalking. You fail, don't stress about it.
- 12:07Go over the next mountain. There's another species, another
- 12:09herd, another fail. Go over the next mountain,
- 12:12different species, different herd, and you just keep going.
- 12:14And then you find the gems like we found that in y'all are the
- 12:17one not like had no inclination to be going after in Y'all and
- 12:21just 20 yards in front of us. Well, if you wanted to hunt when
- 12:24you could shoot it, Yeah. So like, the opportunities are
- 12:27just plentiful. Oh dude, it's.
- 12:28You just don't stop. It's so much different, like
- 12:33it's like hard to I think explain you much.
- 12:36Like it was hard for you to explain to me what it was going
- 12:38to be like hunting here, like how my mind couldn't process it.
- 12:41Sort of. I think it's sort of the same
- 12:43like me trying to explain it to like you and noven a little bit
- 12:45like you know, I'm telling you like it's so much different.
- 12:48Like you really might spend 2 weeks to find a buck to stock
- 12:51and then blow it. Most likely you will blow it and
- 12:54then not see one for another week.
- 12:56Like, dude, it's so much different, you know?
- 12:59And and for guys coming from the States, dude, you cannot gain
- 13:05more experience faster, hardly. 100%.
- 13:07The only way I think there's a somewhat comparable thing in the
- 13:11States would be like a a wild pig hunt because there's not
- 13:16really limits on tags, but like there's, there's also like
- 13:21sometimes it's really hard to find a pig.
- 13:23So it's like, this is you can, like you said, find something.
- 13:27Yeah, You know what I mean. You're almost, almost guaranteed
- 13:30to find something. You don't know what it's going
- 13:32to be, you don't know where it's going to be, and you don't even
- 13:34know if it's approachable, but you're going to come across
- 13:36something. Every, let's say, hour or so of
- 13:40walking, you'll bump into your next talk that you could
- 13:42potentially execute on. It's amazing.
- 13:45Yeah. And I, and I would be curious to
- 13:47like, I think myself and probably most people like me
- 13:52always see videos or pictures of people hunting in Africa.
- 13:55And it's always, almost always super flat and super dry.
- 14:02People are watching this video right now.
- 14:04And they can see it. There's huge mountains like this
- 14:06looks like New Mexico, Elk country, you know what I mean?
- 14:09So tell me about that. Like why?
- 14:12Why does this area look like this?
- 14:15And why are so many of the pictures that we see in the
- 14:20flat, dry, dry stuff? Why is that?
- 14:22Why? The biggest hunting community
- 14:24with a lot of Outfitters would be up north of South Africa or
- 14:28even our neighboring countries. And that is typically, I mean,
- 14:31apart from the, you know, a little hill or Crest or
- 14:34something like that, It is typically flat.
- 14:36And then hunting season is in our autumn winter and then just
- 14:40outside of spring, which means we have drier landscapes.
- 14:43But yeah, we're way South on the coast, almost the tip of South
- 14:47Africa down South. And so we got the coastal rains,
- 14:51which is usually winters, but for the last couple of years
- 14:55it's been raining summer, winter, autumn and spring
- 14:58sporadically. So I mean, it should be really
- 15:01dry right now. And it's absolutely beautiful.
- 15:05And it's just rolling mountains. I mean, what we're on now is
- 15:08some of the small stuff. What's behind us is the big
- 15:10boys. Yeah, and, and, and that that's
- 15:13more what I was really talking about too, is like the terrain
- 15:15is just surprising. It's gorgeous.
- 15:18You know, it's it's bigger, it's bigger and deeper than what I
- 15:23was expecting. Like I was expecting to come out
- 15:25here and be like, this is so much more mild than like most of
- 15:28the stuff I hunt and some of the terrains actually quite similar.
- 15:32Like it's. Some of those stalks caught us a
- 15:35little bit to do. Like when we, when we.
- 15:37Went on the that red hearted beast.
- 15:39What a star. That was awesome.
- 15:41Literally wrapped around an entire mountain, down in a
- 15:44valley, through a river, back up another mountain just to get on
- 15:48the right side of the wind. Yeah, I'm curious too for you,
- 15:53what would you say, if anything? I think I know what you're going
- 15:56to say and you kind of mentioned earlier, but if there's any
- 15:58hunting skills or tactics that you like, you kind of saw me do
- 16:01that you think you're going to implement in your own hunting,
- 16:04like what would that be? And then I'm going to give you,
- 16:06I'm going to give you one from for.
- 16:08Vice versa, yeah, You know, straight up it's patience, just
- 16:12patience. And like we said, either it's
- 16:14just natural instincts for people to make decisions quickly
- 16:17and move quickly. I think it's got to do with a
- 16:19bit more my background and you know, fast decisions and
- 16:23executing them was like life or death.
- 16:25But but just checking how the animals react to us being
- 16:29patient and seen at first hand has sold me on the strategy
- 16:33completely completely. I mean, we had a bliss buck walk
- 16:37in within 6 yards like right into us today just because we
- 16:41sat in the Bush. And I don't think I, I honestly
- 16:45said I think we're only going to get three of the five animals
- 16:48this trip because it's so tough. And just using your patience
- 16:51strategy has actually 4 animals in four days.
- 16:54Yeah, we're ahead of schedule for sure.
- 16:56And we we got some really and. It's not because it's.
- 16:58Easy. No, no, no, no.
- 16:59Good hunting. Dude, I'm telling you like I,
- 17:01I'm telling you, I have done a ton of spot and stock hunting on
- 17:07very, very difficult animals to do it.
- 17:11And this is tough. Like it's not easy.
- 17:15I would sit here and tell you if it was easy.
- 17:17It's not easy. You know what I mean?
- 17:18Like it's not. So that's been awesome.
- 17:21And as far as me answering, you care about visual a lot more
- 17:28than I do and I think that's something I'm going to start
- 17:32just paying a little more attention.
- 17:33Is it like the production side? No.
- 17:35No, no, I mean like you care about animals seeing you more
- 17:38than I are. And I'll tell you what.
- 17:40Bothers me. I'll tell you, there's a couple
- 17:42of clips there was like, fuck. He's looking it up, so I'll tell
- 17:44you why. I'll tell you exactly why when
- 17:47an animal would look at us, he would go duck.
- 17:49And I'm like, well, if I duck now, he's looking right at us
- 17:52and he's going to scare him. So let's just stand here, you
- 17:55know, that's my mentality and it all because I'll tell you the
- 17:58truth. Let's take every animal's a
- 18:01little different, but let's take my bread and butter.
- 18:03Mule deer. What?
- 18:04I think I'm best at life at hunting, right?
- 18:08I think that they're there's their protective systems and the
- 18:12thing that makes them so brutal to hunt is they have excellent
- 18:14all of them, vision, hearing, set scent, top of the mountain,
- 18:18all of them, right. But I always rank it like this
- 18:22wind number one, most important by far in a mule deer.
- 18:25Second is going to be sound, 3rd is sight, and it's not because
- 18:29they can't see you, but if you hold still long enough,
- 18:33sometimes they'll just kind of forget about it almost.
- 18:35And then. But if you blow either of the
- 18:37other two, if you snap on twig at 70, they're gone.
- 18:40If they smell you 100% they're gone from hundreds of yards.
- 18:45So for me, I've always thought that remaining still is more
- 18:51important than like trying to constantly stay behind every
- 18:56single Bush. But I'm intrigued by that.
- 19:00And I think we saw some good results with that.
- 19:03So I think moving forward, I'm going to put a little bit more
- 19:08emphasis on on cover, just a little bit.
- 19:11And it's not like I totally neglected.
- 19:13No, I'm not saying that. But you almost put cover 1st and
- 19:17then sent and then hearing. No, no, look, I think sent is
- 19:20windows it it bothers me with the winds to my back and I know
- 19:25the animals down wind. Oh, of course wind is #1 Yep.
- 19:28But I'm always trying to come up with like a brush that's
- 19:32breaking my heart line or I would never just like pop up and
- 19:35drop down. Yep, mostly like stuff like
- 19:38Impala. They'll just lock eyes on you
- 19:40and then they'll have a staring contest for.
- 19:41Ages. Ages, yeah, and.
- 19:43Because it's such a long, They all have what you call
- 19:45centuries. So all the other Impala would
- 19:48start chilling, and you'd think you've won.
- 19:49But there's one out of 30 that still has its head up waiting
- 19:52for you to move. And if that one puts its head
- 19:54down, the next one will go up into, like, a protective mode to
- 19:57watch the head. And so I've just learned, like,
- 19:59get behind something so that it can break you a bit.
- 20:03I wear that little ghillie that covers, like, my outline, but I
- 20:06love obstruction. Yeah.
- 20:08But. Then in saying that, you also
- 20:10taught me that like if you always focus on obstruction,
- 20:14you're jeopardizing your shooting windows.
- 20:17Oh dude. So like, yeah, just a, yeah,
- 20:20even today, everything we did, we used obstruction.
- 20:22Yep. But always keeping to the left
- 20:24or right of that object always. So we can, Whereas I would
- 20:28normally just get behind it and then try and come around it when
- 20:31it's right when. It's right.
- 20:32And the reason I hate that is because if you're behind
- 20:35something and you go, OK, I'm dead behind it, and then say you
- 20:38stand there because you know me. Like I'll stand there for two
- 20:40hours and then all of a sudden, OK, the animal's right in front
- 20:43of me at 40 yards. Now you have to move though.
- 20:46So like if you're just to the side, you can, just as he's
- 20:49walking around, draw. So that's what I love though.
- 20:52Hunting with the whole trip is being given take and.
- 20:56It's been fun because we're both passionate and like I'm going to
- 20:59keep some of that in the videos when I edit them.
- 21:00Like us almost like it almost sounds like we're beefing
- 21:03sometimes because it's intense. It's.
- 21:05Pity, because now everyone's going to see just like how
- 21:07terrible you are reading when, but yeah.
- 21:11But dude, mother. Nature was putting US against
- 21:14each other this morning. Oh my God, dude, my my favorite.
- 21:19I think one of my favorite lines from today is you go.
- 21:22We are really struggling to get on the same page with wind
- 21:25today. I go, we've been struggling the
- 21:26whole trip on wind, but. But yeah, I, I, I love that, you
- 21:32know, like I want to leave some of that in the edit where you
- 21:35can almost hear there's like a like a bee for attention a
- 21:38little bit. But it's not.
- 21:39It's just that we both, really. Want to so badly want to see you
- 21:43succeed. Yeah, we both yeah.
- 21:44You want to see me succeed and then like, and you, I want to
- 21:48just see, I want to deliver, you know, for like what we're trying
- 21:51to do. And also like as a personal
- 21:53hunter, of course I, I want to do my best.
- 21:56But yeah, it's been a lot of fun hunting with you and, and you're
- 22:00definitely a good honor and and it's fun to hunt with good
- 22:02hunters. But I definitely want to get
- 22:05back to what you said about shooting lanes, because that's
- 22:07something that I have to remind, like when I hunt with Brianna or
- 22:10some of the other folks, I'm like, dude, where you're stopped
- 22:13right now is an awful spot. And also your feet are pointed
- 22:17towards the animal like you always want to square up in a
- 22:19position where wherever the most likely outcome to get a shot.
- 22:22I want to be sure that I'm I don't have to move at all and I
- 22:25can draw. So like for me, that's mega
- 22:28important. I never want to get stuck
- 22:30somewhere without a shooting lane.
- 22:31So like it's, it's dope that you kind of pick that up because
- 22:35that is way at the top of my priority list.
- 22:39But you've shot a lot of stuff, obviously, because you live out
- 22:43here and there's so much. Yeah.
- 22:45Variety. What is your favorite animal to
- 22:48hunt out here, if you could pick one?
- 22:53Yeah, I think we're both on the same page, like a bliss back or
- 22:56an Impala. They're just so tough.
- 22:57They're in herds, they're goofy. But if I had to pick an animal
- 23:02in general, I really my my number one animal that I've ever
- 23:05haunted was a porcupine. Porcupine OK and.
- 23:08That's the one that you saw in our house that night.
- 23:09You literally came for like a nap.
- 23:12Which was fun. I'm glad I got to come to your
- 23:15house, meet the wife and everything, see your
- 23:16workstation. Tell me about.
- 23:19Tell me why you like the porcupine so much.
- 23:20What? Why was that awesome?
- 23:22And did I want to know if you ate it and what the meat was
- 23:25like? Meat was awesome.
- 23:27It was so there's a there was a lot of firsts in that hunt
- 23:31coming to bow hunting. Never grew up with hunting.
- 23:34I have a long lineage of hunters, but with my dad not
- 23:36being in my life, it was it was completely cut from me.
- 23:39My grandfathers and everyone before before him were fantastic
- 23:43hunters. And so I kind of set to learn on
- 23:45my own coming from the military bodyguard and all that kind of
- 23:48stuff. I knew I don't want to do guns
- 23:50and so got with got into the bow stuff after watching the
- 23:53campaigns, I'll cunt and I was just like, this looks absolutely
- 23:56awesome, but I went on a bit of a blood lust because we have so
- 23:59much access to hunting. Yeah, I just was every weekend I
- 24:02was on the next hunt and I would I would just smoke.
- 24:06I just want to fling an arrow and I just and so when I
- 24:09discovered The Cave and we found these porcupine and all that
- 24:12kind of stuff, there was only two, which makes you think like
- 24:15it must be a male and a female. And so for the first time ever,
- 24:19I was like, I don't want to kill them.
- 24:21I don't want to hunt them. I want to, I want to conservate.
- 24:25I want to see these numbers grow before and for three years we
- 24:29let them, you know, live in the valley in peace, undisturbed.
- 24:33And when I actually haunted them, it was like 9.
- 24:35So three years later there was 9.
- 24:37And so for that was like when I became a hunter.
- 24:40That's a true hunter, the guy that doesn't take the shot in
- 24:44the name of, you know, future herds and future numbers and
- 24:47conservation. And so the porcupine made me a
- 24:51better. It wasn't that hunt itself.
- 24:54The idea of the porcupine made me a real hunter, someone that
- 24:57doesn't take the shot. That's friggin that's awesome.
- 25:00I didn't, I didn't know that whole story, but the the meat
- 25:03was pretty good. Awesome.
- 25:05White meat? No.
- 25:06No. No, it's still a red.
- 25:07Red meat, OK. But all they do is eat and
- 25:10sleep. So they're tender.
- 25:12They're super tender. That's.
- 25:13Such a cool story dude I didn't know that, did you with a bow?
- 25:17I've I've, I always make this a joke.
- 25:21I've shot more people with a gun.
- 25:23They'll have shot animals. Dude, I.
- 25:28Yeah, I, I did a survival video. It's on the channel.
- 25:31We got called to a medical emergency that night, so I
- 25:34didn't get to cook it on the video and all that kind of
- 25:36stuff. But I slipped in the Bush for
- 25:37three days in a valley, in the rain and in the mud and all that
- 25:41kind of stuff. And after two nights of failing,
- 25:46I realized if I strap a torch to my bow sight and then put my
- 25:49camera right next to me, and if I yeah, quills on the rocks, I
- 25:53can just click record, then flick the light on and then
- 25:55wherever I point the bar shoot. And I shot them literally like 8
- 25:59O clock at night in the pitch black in the valley so that the
- 26:02moon and light and everything couldn't get in there.
- 26:04Which, by the way, is legal out here, so no one freaked out.
- 26:06No one freaked out. It's come and it's on our it
- 26:09was, it was our farm. But you are camped out for three
- 26:13days and 8:00 at night. I flicked on that torch and it
- 26:17was across the valley. And I, and it was also one of
- 26:20the very first animals that I've slaughtered myself, you know,
- 26:23and the taxidermy had to teach me how to do it because it's a
- 26:26very specific way to do a porcupine.
- 26:28So it was just a, it was when I became a hunter, I wasn't just,
- 26:32I wasn't a killer, I was a hunter.
- 26:34And it was just awesome. That's a really cool story dude.
- 26:36I'm glad I asked that. We never spoke about that, no.
- 26:40I love that because I saw the porcupine in your house and you
- 26:42told me like that's my favorite. Like now I know why it makes
- 26:46sense. So like it has more depth than
- 26:47just the animal, you know, which for me is really important
- 26:50depth. And I think you've noticed that
- 26:52too, is like there's some animals like some dude showed us
- 26:55a friggin double horned ram and I was like, I don't.
- 26:58Want to go in the sheep and. I don't want to go hunt that
- 27:00dude. I mean, what I really respect
- 27:03about you is you're just such a humble dude.
- 27:05Like you could have shot a Sable on this trip, which is one of
- 27:08the most expensive Antelope. You're like, I'm not here for
- 27:11exotics. I'm not yet to take you guys for
- 27:12a ride in in y'all. We've even given you opportunity
- 27:16in y'all and you're just like, wasn't really a part of the
- 27:18deal. It's an expensive antelope.
- 27:19I don't want to do that to you guys.
- 27:21And you've just been very cool about like, yeah, let's just
- 27:24stick to the stuff we spoke about.
- 27:25Well, and, and to be honest, and you know, this like my, my, the
- 27:29animals that I was most jacked up about and I get like the most
- 27:32excited to glass up or stock are the ones that are like most, you
- 27:36know, they're not the expensive ones.
- 27:40You know, it's like, it's the blast.
- 27:42Represents Africa. The blast bak and the red heart
- 27:45of Beast, dude, I mean, the red heart of Beast for me is so cool
- 27:48to hunt just because #1 they're tough to hunt.
- 27:51Like I think they're tough to hunt.
- 27:53Very. Took us forever to get in there.
- 27:55And Beaumar Josh actually text me.
- 27:57He's like, dude, you shot one of those spot in stock.
- 27:59I go, yeah, it's like, dude, that's impressive.
- 28:02So like, and we put in work there that was like we grinded.
- 28:05I mean hiked. Like we had an entire modern
- 28:07range just to get. Around, right and but like
- 28:12something about it, just their color, their horns, the way they
- 28:15move their size, like to me it feels very North American, sort
- 28:19of minus the horns like, you know what I mean?
- 28:21Yeah, obviously it doesn't have antlers, but like, it reminds me
- 28:25a lot of hunting like an elk or a deer or a mule deer or
- 28:29something so like that was awesome and you knew dude, I was
- 28:33talking about him nonstop. I'm like, I really want to make
- 28:35this happen and. It was just by luck.
- 28:38Yeah, that like 2 hours after we got a bliss buck, we walked
- 28:43straight into Impala. That just worked.
- 28:45Wind was good, it was raining. Yeah, so our sound was covered.
- 28:49Thunder. The Thunder.
- 28:51Oh, I was. I was getting a little girl.
- 28:53We forget. I can't.
- 28:54All that was. Going.
- 28:55On that was a hectic 1 because. I keep going like dude, the
- 28:58lightning. Because you're you're scared of
- 29:00lightning. Yeah, you're scared.
- 29:02I've. Nearly got struck and I fucking
- 29:05hate it ever since. Yeah, that that was funny
- 29:08though, And and and the Impala like.
- 29:11I feel like for us in our heads, it kind of gets glossed over a
- 29:13little because it happened kind of fast, but it still was like a
- 29:16pretty epic hunt it was. Actually, just luck and it was,
- 29:19it was just so lucky they were, they were, they were in an.
- 29:21Approachable spot that we had so much sound cover, so much wind
- 29:27like it was it was good. But dude, I mean.
- 29:30I think we're not going to say it yet.
- 29:32Well, this is probably going to be out.
- 29:33After the video. You think, OK, so then we don't
- 29:35talk about it? Well, let's not let's not
- 29:37exactly talk about it just because I don't know when it'll
- 29:39come out. But if you if, if it's out, go
- 29:41watch all the hunts from this. Be sure you catch them all
- 29:44because they're all this guy is a phenomenal filmer.
- 29:48And with me being a hunter and like being miked up the whole
- 29:50time, like it's good shit. All of.
- 29:52US really good shit, so definitely check it out.
- 29:55But I do you know, I'm not a guy who like does product placement
- 30:00or talks about products, tries to sell stuff.
- 30:02That's not what I do. People know I have a few
- 30:04sponsors, but I'm not out here plugging them.
- 30:06I think we got to talk about the broad heads a little bit, just
- 30:09like I think we need to because we had such a spread of shot
- 30:15types. There was not a single shot that
- 30:17was the same as the other. No.
- 30:19And they just destroyed every single one.
- 30:22Good blood down on camera in front of us, Every single one.
- 30:27And when people have watched all the hunting videos, they'll
- 30:29understand how crazy some of those shots were.
- 30:32Yeah. And they just expired within 30
- 30:35to 40 seconds of being shot. And that's such a blast.
- 30:38It's actually long. It's under 20.
- 30:40Yeah. And for us watching them, it
- 30:41seems longer just because like. Because everything's filmed is
- 30:44slow. Right, right.
- 30:45But like drags, I mean, it's a good time to touch on it, I
- 30:49guess, because you shot several long time and you still do shoot
- 30:51sever and and that's great, right.
- 30:53But we shoot a similar type of head a bit a relatively large
- 30:57mechanical and I'll talk about the hard to be shot in
- 31:01particular right away. I was nervous about the shot,
- 31:06not where I wanted to hit him, but.
- 31:08In your defense. But well, I I don't even need
- 31:11the defense, I'm only talking about the head, right?
- 31:13So now where I wanted to hit him immediately a little nervous
- 31:16starts gushing. Blood died so fast.
- 31:20And that to me is the whole argument on why to shoot a
- 31:26mechanical. 100% that. One hunt, you know what I mean?
- 31:30Because wound channels. Big wound channels.
- 31:32You know, bad shots can become average shots very quickly.
- 31:36Exactly. And I mean, you know, I don't
- 31:39know if anyone's going to ever see this, but yeah, the you, you
- 31:42adjusted for the wind. The wind was the only reason we
- 31:45got that animal was because of the wind.
- 31:46It was absolutely gushing. What do you think?
- 31:49It was like maybe 20 mile an hour winds.
- 31:51Yeah. So I mean in kilometers I would
- 31:52say it's closer to 27 because we're that there was the hardest
- 31:58gas with 46 kilometers an hour. Yeah.
- 32:00Thank you. Yeah, but but I again, everyone
- 32:04makes everyone makes shots that aren't the best.
- 32:06I've made plenty of my hunting career, many, and I'm a guy who
- 32:11shoots all the time year round, so it happens to anybody.
- 32:13But that mechanical saved you. That's what I'm saying, yeah.
- 32:15I mean, she, that might have been one of the fastest deaths
- 32:20we had. She was dead so fast.
- 32:22I mean, obviously the Impala was fast.
- 32:26When they watch the video they'll understand he was dude.
- 32:30I have never in my life and I don't when I go hunting bro it's
- 32:34not for it's not for viewership like our hunting videos do.
- 32:36Less views. Anyways, I it's cooled on
- 32:39because I get to watch them in the future and maybe one day my
- 32:41kids or grandkids will get to watch them.
- 32:43But like I do not give a shit if anyone watches them.
- 32:47But dude, when we got that Impala shot on film, I go, well,
- 32:52that's a viral short. Yeah, for multiple reasons.
- 32:55It's a viral short. You know it Like, no question
- 32:58that thing's going to go to the moon. 100%.
- 33:00And like, that's not the purpose of us being out there.
- 33:02Nope. But everything's happened.
- 33:04You catch lightning in a bottle sometimes, and we did in 120
- 33:08frames in the rain, you know. It's crazy.
- 33:12That was beautiful, but it has to be beautiful.
- 33:15Shoot so. Right now you're shooting Hoyt,
- 33:20but you've shot a lot of bows. What has been your favorite
- 33:24compound bow that you felt like you shot the best, were the most
- 33:27repeatable with you were the most comfortable with?
- 33:29Tell me that it could be what you're shooting now, could be
- 33:32something in the past. Let me know.
- 33:34Yeah. So I think we've spoken about
- 33:35this quite a bit on this trip. So I'm not sponsored by anyone,
- 33:39not even server. I mean, I shoot their Broaders
- 33:42because I've been shooting them for a long time and they
- 33:44recognize me and they sometimes share my stuff.
- 33:46So I appreciate the support, but I'm not sponsored by anyone.
- 33:50I work with Magnum Archery who has the dealership for a couple
- 33:53of brands. So I have been shooting PSC for
- 33:57three years and then shot Hoyt quite a bit.
- 34:01Shot Elite with the YouTube channel.
- 34:02Pretty much last year I did 13 animals with 13 different bows.
- 34:06Wow. So literally like I'd build the
- 34:08bow out, go on a hunt, bring it back, strip it down, get the
- 34:11next boat, go on a hunt. Strip it down.
- 34:13Wow, I didn't know that I did. 13 animals, 13 different.
- 34:16That would be a cool compilation.
- 34:17On a side note, you should do a compilation of that but.
- 34:20Anyway, just sever compilation. Oh cool.
- 34:23And that will all be cool. In there.
- 34:25But anyway, sorry to keep. The bow, then I just felt like
- 34:29an absolute, like a Robin Hood, like I could not miss to the
- 34:32point that like at 40 yards I could not aim at the golf tee
- 34:35twice because I'll just be snapping arrows.
- 34:38That elite ethos. 303230. Three, I'm a short guy, you
- 34:44know, 175 S probably like 5-6 or not.
- 34:47No, you're like 57587558, Yeah. And so anything longer just gets
- 34:53too long. But man, I just gelled with
- 34:56that. If I pointed it hit there no
- 34:58matter. And I also never had target
- 35:00panic. It wasn't twitchy.
- 35:01It was super stable, good or decent speeds.
- 35:04And then obviously, just like the bow techs and now the new
- 35:07Matthews, you don't need a bow brace.
- 35:10You can do everything at the lump pockets.
- 35:12So I, I really, I tuned that bow.
- 35:14I set that bow up for me. And so I just gelled as it I,
- 35:18I'm actually a bit sad that I put it back on the shelf because
- 35:21in my heart I knew that that was the bow.
- 35:23I should have, you know, kept out and made mine for a long
- 35:27time. She's she was the one that got
- 35:29away. Yeah, but I will have to be
- 35:31chatting to Elite sometime soon. You should, I think, I think you
- 35:34should, I think that would be a good relationship for you.
- 35:36And you know, you're doing, you're doing good things.
- 35:40And, and I think that it's interesting to me and that's
- 35:43what I talk about on the podcast.
- 35:44I don't try to talk about stuff that like maybe the audience
- 35:47would find interesting, but like, I'm a YouTube guy, right?
- 35:50And I'm a content guy and I'm a nerd about it.
- 35:53So to me it's unique that you do YouTube, you got 10,000
- 35:59subscribers, but you live out here.
- 36:01There's, there's only, there's no, you're like the only one.
- 36:05And if I'm sorry if I'm missing anyone who's South.
- 36:08Africa, there's a couple of guys, yeah, but they're not
- 36:10doing what I'm doing right. They'll post a couple of kill
- 36:13shots or they'll post a clients hunt or something like.
- 36:16That videos. Per SE, they are not influencing
- 36:19a market within the archery industry, right?
- 36:22Or at least again, we both said I've got an egotistical way.
- 36:26We might be missing someone but but but the way that I'm doing
- 36:29it. So tell, tell me about that
- 36:31because obviously when I started in 2018, there was not a ton of
- 36:36people doing archery content, but there was a handful, you
- 36:38know, there was a handful to like, you know, at least know it
- 36:41was possible. And and you know, just like when
- 36:46you've seen someone do it, it's kind of like, you know, it's
- 36:48possible, right? You don't really have that
- 36:51because you sure you could go see that.
- 36:53Oh, well, Bo disciples has made it and Chris BS made it and
- 36:57campaigns has made it, but they're all American.
- 37:01Yep. You know, and you are not tough.
- 37:04So what was that hurdle? Like?
- 37:06Was there ever a part of you that was like, maybe this is a
- 37:09waste of time? Maybe I shouldn't do it or like
- 37:12what really made you want to say, OK, I'm going to film
- 37:16videos and I'm going to put them on YouTube and potentially
- 37:20actually make a living doing this.
- 37:21I want to know that that journey a little bit.
- 37:24Definitely, unfortunately, you know, Americans are very
- 37:27patriotic. You you guys are really proud
- 37:30and so are the businesses. So it's very tough to get them
- 37:33to work with some of the international that's not
- 37:35shooting competition. I'm an influencer and A and a
- 37:38bow hunter. I do not compete in any level.
- 37:42So it was always going to be tough.
- 37:43But if you do something you love with 0 expectation or or the
- 37:48desperation of it to need to be turned around quickly.
- 37:51So with no speeds, I understand it's a marathon and a Sprint.
- 37:54That's a key part. I you have everything going for
- 37:58you, but if you do, unfortunately at a massive
- 38:00disadvantage if you start something you needed to succeed
- 38:03fast because you make bad decisions, you make short term
- 38:06decisions or you lose opportunities because of that
- 38:09impatience. So I played the long game and
- 38:13you know, I've I've spoken to you about it June last year.
- 38:17I finally could like the the bow shop was like, why don't you
- 38:21just do YouTube full time and help us out, you know, with our
- 38:25marketing. And I finally got out of a job
- 38:28that was just crushing my soul, killing my relationship.
- 38:32It was just, it was, it was horrible.
- 38:35And so, yeah, I grounded out with 0 expectations.
- 38:38But I always, and I said it and I've actually, it's the starting
- 38:41line of a big hunting form of mine coming out.
- 38:44And I say I started YouTube with, with not focusing on the
- 38:48metrics so much, but knowing where there was a month or five
- 38:52years. It's going to bring change.
- 38:55And so I think consistency is key.
- 38:57We spoke about it a lot. And this is like being
- 38:59consistent, being predictable for your audience and and
- 39:02playing the long game. You could always succeed.
- 39:05Someone that's playing a long game can never fail.
- 39:08Yeah. And and yeah, I couldn't agree
- 39:11more. I I like a lot about what you
- 39:13said there. And not to interrupt, I, I'll
- 39:18tell you now, I think in five years both brands are going to
- 39:20be fighting to, to work with me and brands in the archery
- 39:24industry are going to be fighting to work with me even
- 39:26though I'm nowhere near your guys continent.
- 39:29I'll get Oh sure, I'm I'm sure you I'm sure you will.
- 39:32I believe that too, because number one, you got a good
- 39:35personality and that's something I really look for.
- 39:38Last night after the safari, we were at a dinner and and I will,
- 39:41but I was just watching. I was just watching you vibe
- 39:45with people at the table. So that's something I'm really
- 39:47good at is vibing with people, making anyone feel liked and
- 39:51accepted. But I was just sitting being
- 39:53quiet more so, which is rare for me.
- 39:56And I was watching you do your thing and you were so good at
- 40:00making everyone feel like you cared.
- 40:03You were listening, you were funny, you were engaging, just
- 40:06like, and that is something you can't really, it sucks to say,
- 40:11but it's like you kind of got it or you don't.
- 40:13And that's rough to hear for some people.
- 40:15But like, you got it, you know? And then thank you.
- 40:17Your film work is so good, you know, and your editing is really
- 40:22good. And we've talked about how you
- 40:24know. Maybe even simplifying a little
- 40:26bit could help you in some ways. Streamlining.
- 40:28But what you do is, is so you are for sure better at videos of
- 40:33me, you're better at photos, you're better at, you know, a
- 40:36lot of things and you have the recipe.
- 40:39So like you said, if you're doing, if you're doing the long
- 40:42game, it's going to happen. You know, I mean, look at me, it
- 40:46took forever. You know, I didn't do this full
- 40:47time until year five year six Year 5 or 6.
- 40:51You know, so like, it's just like you said, the long, long
- 40:55game consistency and the biggest thing I see get aspiring
- 41:01Youtubers in trouble. I know I think we talked about
- 41:02sponsorships. No, well, I think I sometimes I
- 41:05think that can be goofy, but no, what I really think it is is
- 41:08people that only work when they're motivated because I see
- 41:12people all the time on the YouTube space.
- 41:14I can name a few. I'm not going to in person, but
- 41:17they'll yeah, they'll they'll get real motivated, post a bunch
- 41:19and I'm like, let's go and then nothing for like 4 or five
- 41:22months. Then all of a sudden they go
- 41:23back up. We're taking it serious.
- 41:25I'm going to be out here. It's a flash in the pan, four or
- 41:27five videos gone again, and the cycle just repeats.
- 41:31And the difference is with channels like mine or Krispies
- 41:35or Josh Jones or you name any of the guys that are pretty
- 41:39substantial in the space, the consistency, bro, you never.
- 41:43See. You never see me miss uploads
- 41:45like it's not happening, you know?
- 41:47And that's like the mindset that I think if you really want to
- 41:52make it, it's like, no, I'm, I am showing up.
- 41:55I can guarantee you that, you know.
- 41:57Yeah. And if you got that in
- 41:58personality, I think everything else is just the cherry on top.
- 42:02Time. Yeah, time, dude, the time.
- 42:06But it's been so fun. I think the viewers will love
- 42:11hearing your story because, you know, you talked about your job
- 42:13and I don't know if you want to talk about it at all, but like
- 42:15you did security. I like a pretty high level for
- 42:18some celebrities, some very rich people.
- 42:22I don't know if you want to dive into that at all.
- 42:23Maybe talk about it a little bit, but like, how did you like
- 42:27that? How long were you in it?
- 42:29Did anything from that transfer into your hunting?
- 42:32Perhaps other than the impatience?
- 42:34No, but like maybe dive into. That a little bit.
- 42:37OK, so yeah, six years old, told my mom going to military, 13,
- 42:42start training. I meet a Royal Marine and he
- 42:45kind of just changes my mindset on the completely.
- 42:49As a kid, it was just guns, tanks, aeroplanes.
- 42:52I thought I was, you know, going to go do some cool shit like the
- 42:54movies, 13M old Marine and he's like, no, this is actually
- 42:57what's going to happen. Like the 1st 16 months, this is
- 43:00what you're going to go through, then you're going to do it was
- 43:02just pretty much trying to like saw me on the idea of finding
- 43:04something else that I want to lock into and I was sold.
- 43:08I was sold, you know, growing up with not a, not a strong male
- 43:10figure. Dad wasn't in my family or
- 43:13wasn't involved in our lives pretty much at all since we were
- 43:15four years old. Stepdad came in when I was about
- 43:186 and the last five years of a 10 year marriage with my mom was
- 43:22abusing us, getting kicked out and having to stay at boarding
- 43:25school with teachers and grandparents for two years, you
- 43:28know, and all of that was just prepping me for my dream, which
- 43:32is military. And so, yeah, six days after
- 43:34finishing my matric finals and washing cars a whole year to
- 43:37save up for plane tickets and that kind of stuff.
- 43:39Ship off to the Foreign Legion, get early medical discharge,
- 43:43blowing both my ankles out. Either have to have an operation
- 43:46and I'm a base giffy and I don't have operation.
- 43:48I'm still a base giffy. I'd never be deployed.
- 43:51And I had Angie back home, so who's now my wife?
- 43:55And so the right call for me was just to come home.
- 43:58Like I wasn't going to be able to achieve what I wanted to
- 44:00achieve. And that's the the B game after
- 44:04finishing military where there was a 5-6 or ten years stunt was
- 44:07to go into private security. So it was like, sweet, this is
- 44:10done. I'm going to go into Plan B now.
- 44:12And so, yeah, I had a really good stint of close protection
- 44:15and bodyguarding some very higher people, royal families,
- 44:17celebs, all of that kind of stuff.
- 44:19Got into a hostage situation that got us in a court case for
- 44:22quite a long time where we had to put some guys down.
- 44:26And that's nobbled into me wanting to not be so involved in
- 44:30the action. Going to more like the corporate
- 44:32side. So the industry that I still
- 44:33understand, but more like a desk job.
- 44:36But unfortunately, because of my background, I was just getting
- 44:38roped up into the bad stuff because guys weren't trying for
- 44:42it. And so you're talking about like
- 44:44husbands trying to kill wives and we have to breach the house
- 44:46and get them off and disarm them and shootouts at malls and
- 44:50shootouts trying to recover vehicles.
- 44:51And I just kept getting roped up into stuff.
- 44:54And I think after like 3 shootouts in three weeks, me and
- 44:57my wife were just now wife said it's just not worth it.
- 45:02It's just absolutely not worth it.
- 45:03And while I was at that job, I started YouTube.
- 45:06I was bow hunting at the time, 2019-2020, I started bow hunting
- 45:10and I'd always been into video, video, videography, photography,
- 45:15all of it. And I was doing like weddings on
- 45:18the weekends to earn extra bucks and that kind of stuff.
- 45:20And so, yeah, 20/23/2022, I was like, let me try and combine the
- 45:25two. I see guys doing it, the
- 45:27Crispies yourself, you know, Levi Morgan, kind of the
- 45:31educational stuff. Cameron Hands and I kind of just
- 45:34morphed the two together of my passions and went on it.
- 45:37You know, it's hard to just go into straight detail about my
- 45:41career in the security industry, but you saw some rough stuff.
- 45:45I think a lot of the way that I'm moving the bushes definitely
- 45:48come straight back to my training.
- 45:50The way I plant my feet on the ground is as if I'm, you know,
- 45:53moving into the CQB kind of situation.
- 45:56I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm extremely quiet on my
- 45:59feet. I don't know if you heard that
- 46:01at all. Like I'm constantly heel to toe,
- 46:03heel to toe. We're both, I think we both got
- 46:05quiet feed. I'll be on it.
- 46:06But I do want to get you those sneaks that I got.
- 46:08I want you to order a pair. They're all sneaks.
- 46:09They're cheap. For soft shoes. $20 off Amazon.
- 46:13I want you to just try them and text me, see what you think.
- 46:16Yeah. I'll give them a go.
- 46:17Yeah, I guarantee your noise will reduce over boots by like
- 46:20at least 25%. Yeah, well, it's also nice to
- 46:23have those kind of things if you're in a thorny area and you
- 46:26can't go into your socks or something like that.
- 46:28And stuff doesn't get stuck to them and they do get stuck to
- 46:30socks. So I actually think they're
- 46:31quieter. I've tested a lot.
- 46:33But dude, I think you would fall in love with it because you love
- 46:36stalking so much. But dude that's a cool story I I
- 46:39love hearing. That's not much detail, but
- 46:41yeah, that's. That's enough detail, I mean.
- 46:43In a nutshell, I just saw too much contact in too little time.
- 46:48And then the last engagement I was really just prepping to
- 46:51catch one. There was just too many bullets
- 46:52flying for me not to catch 1. And I kind of just had to tell
- 46:55myself I've got my Med kit on me, I got my IFAC, I've got a
- 46:58couple of TQS on me. I'm going to have to patch
- 47:00myself up. I hope I just don't get
- 47:02something that I can't patch up. Like that's all going through my
- 47:04brain while I'm shooting, while I'm covering, while we were
- 47:06treating, while we get into cover.
- 47:08And so when that day wrapped up, me and my missus were just like
- 47:13we done with this. I mean, dude, like, like, I
- 47:17mean, if you're someone who feeds off adrenaline that like a
- 47:20job like that, like you can't ask for a lot more.
- 47:22It's so, I mean, that's like excitement at the peak, you
- 47:25know, but I feel like that's like you said earlier, it's
- 47:28definitely a young man's game. And not that either of us are
- 47:31old, but like for that you kind of are, you know what I mean?
- 47:35Like it's, but it's so cool hearing that.
- 47:38And I think it's an important part of your story, you know,
- 47:40just like me being a biker in the past is important to my
- 47:43story, you know, and everyone reaches a certain point in a
- 47:47certain way. And one thing I think that I
- 47:51respect about what you do in your videos and just kind of the
- 47:57way you approach doing YouTube and content is I don't see you
- 48:01trying to be someone else. Like I, I sometimes I'll watch
- 48:05someone and be like, I know that's not their personality and
- 48:10like I, I want them to, I want everyone to win.
- 48:13I genuinely mean that. Like I never want anyone to fail
- 48:16and I wish everyone blows up and accomplishes their goals.
- 48:18That's like what really important to me and what I root
- 48:21for. But sometimes I can just watch
- 48:24somebody and I know them in person and I'll go that this is,
- 48:26this is, this is an act right here.
- 48:28They're trying to like be funny to like be like my videos or
- 48:31something, but your their personality might be more
- 48:35educational, more dry, whatever it might be, just do that to
- 48:39people. Because guess what?
- 48:41The pool that likes to watch me for my personality there is, I
- 48:45guarantee, a pool that's just as big, that want to watch someone
- 48:49that's much different. No.
- 48:51Find your audience, connect with your audience, and I respect
- 48:54that. From what I can gather, what
- 48:56I've seen, I've watched a fair amount of your videos.
- 48:59I think you do a very good job of that.
- 49:01Thank you. So I respect that.
- 49:02Thank you and. Well, it's sustainable.
- 49:04Yeah, because you're not acting. The unfortunately and we are
- 49:08talk about this even in relationships not to not yeah,
- 49:10we're going full of the we we don't have Brianna yet to keep
- 49:14us on track. No, she she actually gets off
- 49:16track more than me. I actually had to keep her on
- 49:19track. But that's what makes.
- 49:20Motorcycles podcast fun. We don't stick in the rails bro.
- 49:23But we're, we're talking about, I, I talk about all the time
- 49:28like that honeymoon phase of a relationship when you know, like
- 49:30girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever. That's why I think it's so
- 49:34important for people to like move in with each other because
- 49:36that facade has to give up and you start seeing the real
- 49:38picture. And that's the same with
- 49:40YouTube. Eventually you're going to get
- 49:42tired, you're going to get depressed, you're going to,
- 49:44because you have to constantly not be yourself to keep up with
- 49:48the kind of content that you're trying to make.
- 49:50And I think that's why I really enjoy the what you do, which is
- 49:53just like point, shoot, put on a clip and and post it.
- 49:58There's no need to fake it. There's no need to change it.
- 50:01And if I've learnt anything on this trip is I don't think
- 50:04anything that I do is complicated.
- 50:06I just need to do more of what you do, which is more Gary Vees
- 50:10is it all the time? Don't create document.
- 50:14Yeah, don't. Try and create a whole new
- 50:16thing. Just have a camera rolling and
- 50:19let people see what you're all about.
- 50:20Yeah, totally. I mean, I, I think that Gary,
- 50:22Gary's a legend. First of all, I love Gary, life
- 50:25changing love Gary. But I, I wanted to, I wanted to
- 50:29say a quote that I love. And it's a little bit different,
- 50:32but a similar vein of what we're talking.
- 50:35But I love the quote that if you tell the truth then you never
- 50:40have to remember what you said. 100%.
- 50:43And bro, I'm never stressed because of that.
- 50:45I'd I'm not a liar, that's like I'm a lot of things, but I'm
- 50:48definitely not a liar. And I think that because of that
- 50:52and being authentic and who I am too, because if you're
- 50:55inauthentic and who you are, that's a lie as well.
- 50:57If I'm faking on camera that I'm.
- 50:58Lying to anxiety, depression and all that.
- 51:00And then? It's like who is it going to
- 51:02catch up with me type thing? I don't have to think that bro,
- 51:04because I know that if I said something to someone, maybe like
- 51:07maybe I told him that in a secret.
- 51:09I don't want them to tell somebody, but guess what, If
- 51:10they do, it might be harsh to hear, but what I'm saying is, is
- 51:14true. You know what I mean?
- 51:16At least from my perspective. So I think that's such a banger.
- 51:20And it kind of goes with what you're saying is like just like
- 51:23try to be authentic. Catch up.
- 51:25Yeah, dude. Yeah.
- 51:27And that's the fun part, dude. This trip, like, not only have
- 51:29we haunted, not only have we shared a few drinks, we've
- 51:32shared some dinners. We have ate, by the way, ate
- 51:36everything we killed. Ate everything.
- 51:38Well, not not really hard. To be not yet, but that's
- 51:40tomorrow. But since we got the zebra and
- 51:44it was today, we're going to have that today, and we'll have
- 51:46Roy Heart to be us tomorrow. Yeah, Roy Heart.
- 51:49You got to quit with that. You got to quit with that.
- 51:51So actually this is this is kind of fun, right?
- 51:54This is fun for me and my dad. Shout out to Ted.
- 51:57He'll be watching. He'll he'll love this part.
- 51:59So there's a lot of Dutch influence here.
- 52:03Tell me about. That so let's you the dot the
- 52:05Dutch. And tell me about Afrikaans
- 52:07language a little. Give me like a spiel.
- 52:08All that a. 100% so the Dutch landed just something like in
- 52:12the 1700s and so, but through hundreds of years have developed
- 52:17their own slang and own terms and not called Afrikaans.
- 52:20So if you speak Afrikaans in the Netherlands, you'd get by, but
- 52:24it is definitely a African dialect of Dutch, so yeah.
- 52:29Yeah, and you speak it somewhat, you said somewhat.
- 52:32I understand it fully because most of the businesses I do
- 52:35business with is in Afrikaans and even their marketing have
- 52:38pushed Afrikaans because the the community of Afrikaans speaking
- 52:41people is so tight knit and they support each other.
- 52:44So it's kind of like America is proud to be American Afrikaans,
- 52:47People are proud to be Afrikaans.
- 52:49So the whole marketing strategy is to switch everything from
- 52:51English to Afrikaans and really cater for the market that
- 52:54they're working with. Wow.
- 52:56I mean, I'd say, I would say 85 to 90% of the hunting or hunters
- 53:02in South Africa, Afrikaans, really, that's just a culture.
- 53:04Well, I heard Novan speaking it to, you know, a couple people
- 53:08and it's, it's an interesting language.
- 53:09I, I like the sound of it. It's like kind of a unique
- 53:13sounding, kind of like a almost like a clunky sound, like, I
- 53:16don't know how to describe it. Like it pops.
- 53:18It's just like a cool sound. You know what I mean?
- 53:21Like, I don't know, it's cool, but I also was curious.
- 53:24So you just went to the states for your first time, but let's
- 53:27erase that part. Say you hadn't been yet.
- 53:29What is like your thoughts? Like what do you what do you
- 53:33think of when you think the United States?
- 53:36Like, you know what I mean? What's your?
- 53:38Last five years the only content I could digest is American
- 53:41influencers in the bow hunting and archery community.
- 53:44The Crispy's yourself, Cameron Hands.
- 53:46Levi Morgan Dudley on the educational side, obviously 9
- 53:50pager but because of Sippy, the owner of Magnum.
- 53:55I understand you guys hunting laws, rules and how things works
- 53:59for a very long time, but the only thing I've ever cared about
- 54:02is trying to get a bit of hunting done in the states to be
- 54:05very honest. So you don't think a ton about
- 54:06like, you don't have like a real view of like the culture or the
- 54:10like? Our news covers you guys
- 54:12politics like hardcore some. More than your own.
- 54:15Even. Probably even more than your
- 54:16own, like the way you guys get the news.
- 54:19So like we always know what's happening with Trump or Biden or
- 54:22executive orders that are getting signed or Elon Musk
- 54:24saying something or doing the hand thing.
- 54:27And. It's going wild.
- 54:30But so I'm always aware of like the political stance and the
- 54:33stuff that's going on and the California fires.
- 54:35And so I'm aware of all that stuff, but the only shit I could
- 54:38care about is. Going on a hunt or?
- 54:40Just get into nature. When I was there in Billings,
- 54:42Mt, all I wanted to do is get up in the mountains and just be in
- 54:45nature. See it?
- 54:46Yeah. And you said your dream hunt is
- 54:48dream hunt. Alaskan brown bear, right?
- 54:50Yes, Sir. So if anyone's watching this as
- 54:53a hook up to save this guy some Rand.
- 54:56Open the gate. Yeah, go on, Alaskan brown bear.
- 55:00But. But really, if I could just just
- 55:04like you have come to another continent to take your skills
- 55:07that you've owned since you were six or five years old, like you
- 55:10said, and being able to hunt animals on a completely
- 55:14different continent, I I want to do the same.
- 55:16Yeah. I haven't haunted outside of the
- 55:18southern tip of Africa. Yeah, that would be a goleman
- 55:22where there was a white tail and alcohol, moose or anything like
- 55:25that. I'd be really keen to put
- 55:26something down outside the country.
- 55:28I would love for you to do that. I think it would be awesome,
- 55:33dude. It's it's it's really cool.
- 55:35I mean, I think, I don't know, I think I have a such a kind of a
- 55:39unique perspective coming out here like to, you know, in that
- 55:44I've never done something like this and I know people who have.
- 55:48But like I said, I guess coming over you kind of think like.
- 55:54You. Kind of your perception is that
- 55:56it's in. Granted, I will give one caveat
- 55:59before saying this. We have not sat any hides or
- 56:02blinds. No hides, no blinds.
- 56:04Everything we've done has been spot in stock and we did that
- 56:07intentionally because that's what I like to do.
- 56:08What you like to do. We are going to put, we are
- 56:10probably going to set a hide for one.
- 56:11One, yeah, share the facilities, yeah.
- 56:14Yeah, show the facilities. But I will say the, again, it's
- 56:18going to sound a little harsh, but I think like the perception
- 56:20of people like me who hunt like where I do and how I think they
- 56:25think they're going to come over and it's like kind of like a
- 56:27farmed hunt. It's like a canned super.
- 56:30Easy, hunt me. Do you want to do 1020?
- 56:32Thirty yards and boom. I think literally like it's to
- 56:35us, it's like going out and shooting a cow was what people
- 56:37think it is. And I can honestly say.
- 56:40These animals are. Wild.
- 56:42They're wild animals, there's no doubt about that.
- 56:44They are skittish. They jump strings more than a
- 56:48pretty much anything I've haunted in the states.
- 56:50I'll, I'll just be honest, they are jumpy.
- 56:52Very. I mean they're.
- 56:54Not They're not easy to stalk. You cannot play around with the
- 56:57wind. You cannot be loud.
- 56:59You got to watch your. You just can't be sloppy.
- 57:01You can't be sloppy. And I, and, and that was so
- 57:04important for me to come here and experience first hand
- 57:07because that is not what I really thought it would be, you
- 57:10know, and I'm actually, I'm so happy and relieved that it's how
- 57:15it's not that. No, I'm so happy, you know, and.
- 57:18I mean, that first time we saw Bliss buck on the dam and we had
- 57:21an easy approach. We both were like, oh, we
- 57:23thought it would be easier when we start.
- 57:26When we start, nothing's going to pan out.
- 57:28But I like it that like we enjoy the hard stuff.
- 57:31Yeah. And and I just, I know that a
- 57:34lot of our audience are guys like me that like to do stuff
- 57:37hard and do the over the counter outcomes and stuff.
- 57:40That's brutal. This is definitely, it's not as
- 57:45brutal, but that's like it's still hard and a great way to
- 57:48hone your skills. And that's why I think coming
- 57:51out here is so worth it. Plus, as guys from America,
- 57:55like, what are we hunting in March, April, May?
- 57:59There's no hunting. You know what I mean?
- 58:01Like, you can come over here, come over here.
- 58:03Well, I guess there's turkeys, but like.
- 58:04Get ready for Get ready for your.
- 58:06September, yeah. So I I'm a fan and I I will, I
- 58:09will be coming back at some point.
- 58:11I don't know. I mean just hopefully sooner
- 58:13rather than later I'll be coming back and now I have a whole new
- 58:19understanding. It is different.
- 58:21Like, it's different, obviously, and hunting over where we're at,
- 58:24it's different, but it's still awesome and it's still hard and
- 58:30challenging and a very, very good way to hone your skills and
- 58:34get a lot of reps in a short period of time.
- 58:37And that, to me, mega valuable. Some good good bow hunting.
- 58:42Absolutely. I've always said it's bow
- 58:44hunters paradise. And you're right about that,
- 58:47dude. I mean, where else can you go
- 58:49where in four days? I don't even know how many
- 58:52stocks we've been on. So many. 9/10.
- 58:56Easy. Easily.
- 58:58Easily. And that's being selective with
- 59:00which ones we go on, you know, if.
- 59:02You just want looking at like 4 mountain ranges and be like
- 59:05don't want to go for that? Don't want to go for that.
- 59:07Let's try and make a go for that.
- 59:09So I, I just wanted to nip that in the bud, you know, because.
- 59:13But also the Rand dollar, you've been saying it the whole time,
- 59:16like you guys bring the USD over here.
- 59:19It goes a long way. Yeah, dude, like food and and
- 59:23everything is definitely cheaper.
- 59:25I did get, you know, I got a little bit chapped when they
- 59:27switched the prices out on me. The Taxidermist.
- 59:30I got to learn a new accent. Yeah, yeah, unfortunately they
- 59:34had an American accent and they're like, sorry.
- 59:37Sorry. Wrong, wrong price sheet so that
- 59:39I don't love obviously like who would but.
- 59:42I mean, I, I, I get it. But that was I'm like.
- 59:45That's not even legal in the States.
- 59:47You can't do that. You know what I mean?
- 59:49But but. Like I said, we're somewhere
- 59:51else and everything's different, but I have had a freaking blast.
- 59:55Incredible. And we got more days like.
- 59:57Incredible. We might have one more day than
- 59:59we planned. I know, I know, I.
- 1:00:01Know and then you. Got some big plans after this
- 1:00:02Tell tell me about those plans. So you're going to leave
- 1:00:06probably Monday now. April 1st.
- 1:00:09April Fools. Day, we thought you leaving
- 1:00:11Sunday, you leaving Monday, we thought you leaving Monday and
- 1:00:15you're actually leaving Tuesday. So you're going to be here for
- 1:00:18another day. But literally when you leave,
- 1:00:19I'm going to stay on. I'm going to hunt myself, get in
- 1:00:22the Bush, go for some specific stuff, the Bush bucks, the DACA,
- 1:00:25then Y'alla, something I've shot in yard before, but something I
- 1:00:28haven't shot before, that's my goal.
- 1:00:30Or something that I haven't shot on foot and any other thing is a
- 1:00:33zebra. So we'll see what happens next
- 1:00:35week and then the following week I'm doing a week of fellow deer
- 1:00:39rat hunting. So literally while they're
- 1:00:41mating and going absolutely berserk, kind of like what
- 1:00:43you're out doing, calling and all that kind of stuff, I'm
- 1:00:46going to be going after them in the mountains, which is about
- 1:00:48four hours from here. But those mountains are these
- 1:00:51guys. Wow.
- 1:00:52It's just huge country and no cover.
- 1:00:56So it's just like you said, it's topo.
- 1:00:58You're just you're working the curvature of the Earth.
- 1:01:00Curvature dude. Curvature is curvature is a trip
- 1:01:04man. It's like.
- 1:01:06I think the best example of it would be our Roy Hottaby.
- 1:01:10Hottabias, bro, that curvature, like we had to like Dang near
- 1:01:18get on top of them before we could see them.
- 1:01:20Let's say on top of them it was, you know, 60 yards.
- 1:01:23But like it's open country. Theoretically you could see them
- 1:01:26from 700 yards, but you can't because of all the curves.
- 1:01:30As you get close. Yeah, because it like you can't
- 1:01:32see over the the. The I mean, we stalked for three
- 1:01:36hours not even knowing if they're there.
- 1:01:39Yeah. That one was funny because I
- 1:01:40can. Sense you're getting impeached,
- 1:01:42I can sense Travis behind me going.
- 1:01:44I'm ready to leave dude. I'm.
- 1:01:45I don't think they're here. Like, not really like we have
- 1:01:49not seen. Them I swear, dude, I was in
- 1:01:51your brain for that part. I go, this dude is so pissed
- 1:01:54that I'm still going bro, not pissed, but I'm like, I know
- 1:01:57he's like, what are we doing? I'll do 14 hours a day with you
- 1:02:00and I'm happy. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:02And then dude, sure as shit we look over that.
- 1:02:05I learned they're not Ant hills, they're termite.
- 1:02:08Termite Hills. Termite hills, which are a trip.
- 1:02:11Dude. I've never seen one of those.
- 1:02:14Like termites or? Hills.
- 1:02:15I've never seen hills and. They're giants.
- 1:02:17They're big, good vantage points.
- 1:02:19Yeah. So, dude, it's awesome.
- 1:02:23Like I said, it's been a blast to hunt with you.
- 1:02:25We still got more to do. Got more to do, more days.
- 1:02:29Yeah, we film freaking bangers. We're going to film more.
- 1:02:34But yeah, I I really like I said, I respect you a lot.
- 1:02:37I think you're doing good things.
- 1:02:38Keep going and. Thank you.
- 1:02:41I hope that everyone listening to this got a kick out of Heaven
- 1:02:45Outdoors with Travis on, and be sure to subscribe to him.
- 1:02:48And if you want to come, you know, hit the Bush, check out
- 1:02:52Elan's River Safari. Then it's freaking awesome,
- 1:02:55dude. It's, yeah, I always say, I
- 1:02:57always use that line. It cannot be explained.
- 1:03:01It has to be experienced. Have to get out you and I.
- 1:03:05Don't think I could word that any better.
- 1:03:06Anyone that loves bow hunting will be obsessed with this
- 1:03:11place. Paige told me when I told her I
- 1:03:13was coming out here, she said, dude, you're going to love it.
- 1:03:18Like you're going to want to go back.
- 1:03:19I go, OK, you know, and like, you just don't get it.
- 1:03:23Like you said, you got to come. Yeah, you have to come you so
- 1:03:26much. People can show you videos,
- 1:03:28photos, tell you about the experiences, but once you step
- 1:03:31foot, yeah, that's something else.
- 1:03:33And The thing is, it's like, OK, you got to pay to fly over here,
- 1:03:38pay for pay to hunt, but it's not like it's you only live one
- 1:03:43time. So I give it a shot.
- 1:03:45You know, I'm glad I did. I, I, I almost like several
- 1:03:50times, like maybe I just won't do it.
- 1:03:51And I'm so happy that I did, you know, So I, I encourage people
- 1:03:55who are on the fence like me, and I'm sure there's a lot.
- 1:03:57Just give it a shot. What do you got to lose A?
- 1:04:00100% what do you got to lose? It's just some bad
- 1:04:03misconceptions and I think you're going to squash them by
- 1:04:05showing your videos and how we haunted and how we worked.
- 1:04:07And then we said, like for the people that don't want to walk
- 1:04:10and stalk, that maybe have injuries, maybe their health
- 1:04:13isn't top notch, there is hides, there is blinds, there is tree
- 1:04:17stands. You can do all of that as well.
- 1:04:19Yeah, you can do. We just chose to get the good
- 1:04:22old fashioned legs working. Yeah, there's there's options
- 1:04:25and I think that's really cool. Also Elands River, correct me if
- 1:04:28I'm wrong, I don't I don't want to jump the gun here.
- 1:04:30So if I'm wrong, just nip it in the bud.
- 1:04:32But it's only archery hunting, is that correct?
- 1:04:34So yeah, they, they did some gun hunting in the past, but it was
- 1:04:37basically private or with friends and family, that kind of
- 1:04:40stuff. But since I've come in, which is
- 1:04:41about 6 months now, we have converted completely to bow
- 1:04:44hunting. So there you go, if I was this
- 1:04:47dude. If if this location was haunted
- 1:04:49with guns, we would have had a terrible time.
- 1:04:53Yeah. Oh dude.
- 1:04:54Because animals are completely traumatized.
- 1:04:56Oh, I'm completely traumatized. So for me, archery only is
- 1:05:01insane. Like that's a huge point to me.
- 1:05:03So obviously our archery, our whole brand is based around
- 1:05:07bows. So to anyone who watching, you
- 1:05:10can come here. There's not going to be gun
- 1:05:12rounds banging off. You can.
- 1:05:14And what's so important? Can I tell you when I was in
- 1:05:16Montana, people asked this all the time.
- 1:05:18Elias River Safaris does not do two groups and 1 gun.
- 1:05:21So if there's one hunter in one group, the entire ranch is his.
- 1:05:26If six friends want to come here together, the entire ranch is
- 1:05:28theirs. You never share, which bothers
- 1:05:31me sometimes when you go to a place and you bump into people
- 1:05:33you don't even freaking know. You don't know how their safety
- 1:05:37is. You don't know how their
- 1:05:38awareness is. You don't even know how they
- 1:05:39stalk. And now you got to share this
- 1:05:42piece of value or something like that with them.
- 1:05:43So when you come with you, one person or six friends, that's
- 1:05:46yours. This this whole area is for you
- 1:05:48guys to hunt. Yeah, that's cool.
- 1:05:50I didn't know that either. I did not know that either.
- 1:05:53And what I really like is, you know, I love getting up early.
- 1:05:57I love getting up before the sun, hiking up to a glassing
- 1:06:01spot, setting up my tripod and and really looking pounding the
- 1:06:04hills like with the eyes as well as the legs.
- 1:06:08You can do that here. All of it.
- 1:06:10You can do it so. We've done it almost every
- 1:06:12morning. We have, we have and today it
- 1:06:15worked out, man, today was awesome.
- 1:06:18Shoot, we were just, it was kind of one of those things.
- 1:06:23Like us, the wind was funny, of course, a funny conversation,
- 1:06:26but in reality, the wind was at our back regardless of which way
- 1:06:30we faced. Today we couldn't get it and.
- 1:06:33At some points, if we're facing each other, we're both swears at
- 1:06:35our. Back both and it was probably.
- 1:06:37Because dude, the wind is shifty here, but it's shifty anytime
- 1:06:41you hunt. It's like nuts.
- 1:06:42It's it'll be like this now I want to be perfectly.
- 1:06:45Constant when it's blowing hard. So when I hunt mountains a lot,
- 1:06:47right? Just like this mountains create,
- 1:06:50especially when it's not blowing like this dude.
- 1:06:52It's always because but that's that makes you a better bow
- 1:06:56hunter dude, I'm telling you like it really is a crash course
- 1:06:59out here. I would say to anybody who let's
- 1:07:03say you got a bowl out cut in two years and you've never shot
- 1:07:07anything with a bow and have 0 experience.
- 1:07:10I can guarantee you that if that hunt is on public land and you
- 1:07:13do not have an outfitter, probably even then you are not
- 1:07:16going like the odds of you fill in the tag 1%.
- 1:07:21If you come here 1st and hunt for a week and at least
- 1:07:23practice, hone some skills, your odds are going to bump up a
- 1:07:27little bit. Have a great time, get animals
- 1:07:30on the ground. You know you're not just coming
- 1:07:32here to quite and quite train, but it's some valuable skills
- 1:07:37learnt in a very short space of time.
- 1:07:39Like you said, guys might only stalk once, twice 3 * a year on
- 1:07:42an animal and we've done that in like an afternoon.
- 1:07:45Exactly. Like 3 different herds, 3
- 1:07:47different species. That's worth that's worth some
- 1:07:50travel and some some investment. What to me?
- 1:07:52Yeah. And I think what what you said
- 1:07:54is is on point like vet make sure these people have catered
- 1:07:58for other people before. Make sure you know someone
- 1:08:00that's been there before and knows them because there's a lot
- 1:08:03of scams out there. So you don't want to be suckered
- 1:08:05into paying thousands of dollars landing at the airport and no
- 1:08:08one's there to pick you up. So work with people that you
- 1:08:11know, work with people that have been vouched for by people that
- 1:08:15you know. And honestly I I don't know
- 1:08:18anyone that has come here and not come again afterwards.
- 1:08:22Yeah, I I would come again for sure.
- 1:08:24I really would, no doubt I would.
- 1:08:28You're like, it's a trip because when we first drove in and you
- 1:08:31see like how you know, the animals are playing animals,
- 1:08:33some of them. So they just stand out there and
- 1:08:35then they because you don't shoot guns and you don't shoot
- 1:08:37them from cars, they'll stand by.
- 1:08:40You can drive by them, you know, and.
- 1:08:42Then yards. And when we first I.
- 1:08:43Remember when we caught you? When I first let me put you
- 1:08:47inside my mind where you're going, I'm like, oh boy, this is
- 1:08:51like my worst. This is this is what I didn't
- 1:08:53want, you know? And then, sure enough, that's
- 1:08:56not how it is. Come to the lodge, get our
- 1:08:58cameras on, go on foot, everything's gone.
- 1:09:01Yeah, exactly. So I will, I will tell people
- 1:09:04this when you show up, like if you come to Elan's River Safari,
- 1:09:07because I I'm, I am not again, I'm not the type to I'm not
- 1:09:11going to sell if something's like ass, but it's this is
- 1:09:14legit. It's fun, very good learning.
- 1:09:17But I'm telling you, when you pull up, you probably will have
- 1:09:20a moment where you're like, oh God, you know, most likely.
- 1:09:24But give it a shot. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:09:25When you get here, go on some stocks.
- 1:09:28And you'll realize very quick. Exactly.
- 1:09:31And it's just simply because the car is not a threat.
- 1:09:33And we went on safari yesterday and they actually said that they
- 1:09:36see a vehicle as one unit, not that there's human beings
- 1:09:40actually sitting in it. So they see the car, they don't
- 1:09:42see the people interest. And so, but I mean, I go to
- 1:09:45places where guys just shoot off a car all the time.
- 1:09:48You won't get within 500 metres of the animals with a car
- 1:09:51because they just associate that as a as much of A threat as a
- 1:09:54wild predator. So it's only because Inland
- 1:09:57River Safaris doesn't do sketchy stuff like that that you can
- 1:10:01kind of drive up in a car, but. Which which is actually kind of
- 1:10:05in a way nice because, you know, I don't know if you bring your
- 1:10:10kids or your wife or. Something you actually have a
- 1:10:12drive? Go see the animals.
- 1:10:14Yeah, you can do a little. Bit of a would step your foot on
- 1:10:17the ground and everything's just scattered.
- 1:10:19Yeah. And and I, I do want to say one
- 1:10:21other thing. It's not like you can drive by
- 1:10:24like let's say pull up on the side of a zebra and then say,
- 1:10:26OK, you get out the car, we'll pull off and you shoot them.
- 1:10:29No, that's not allowed. Like you.
- 1:10:30Not how we roll. You can't even, you can't be
- 1:10:33within hundreds of yards of it with the.
- 1:10:35I mean, every time we've been driving, we'll we'll stop an
- 1:10:39hour stalk away. Yeah, yeah, at least exactly so.
- 1:10:42We'll stop behind a mountain and then have to hike it and get
- 1:10:45around it and get down it and get up wind and.
- 1:10:47And to me, that speaks well, you know, to Elands.
- 1:10:49And I think, I think for guys like me who have the perception,
- 1:10:53which is not uncommon, I think it's probably the common
- 1:10:56conception is like that, that or perception.
- 1:10:59Sorry. I think that is it's kind of
- 1:11:02calming to know you know that because you, like you said, you
- 1:11:06could hear me just go. Oh.
- 1:11:07God, I could hear your thoughts. I was like, they're not even
- 1:11:11running away. He's probably going to think,
- 1:11:12this is so easy. And I just knew the minute we
- 1:11:16get out, you're going to realize what it's all about.
- 1:11:18Because thank God dude. I would have been so
- 1:11:19disappointed bro if we just like.
- 1:11:21We like it difficult. I wouldn't oversell it either.
- 1:11:24I'm not a guy that is that that sells something or speaks about
- 1:11:27something that I don't, I'm not absolutely proud of or don't
- 1:11:30absolutely believe in. So when I told you that we're
- 1:11:32going to have a good time, we're going to hunt hard, it's walking
- 1:11:34stalk spot and stalk. Like we did it.
- 1:11:37We've done it the whole time, but I don't think we would have
- 1:11:41been as successful if it was like just me.
- 1:11:43We I learned some valuable lessons on how you like to stalk
- 1:11:47that I think are just perfect for this environment.
- 1:11:49Same here dude, Learned a lot from you and IT you know for me
- 1:11:53sometimes that we talked about it on the pod before.
- 1:11:55I'm not the easiest guy to hunt with because I'm not, you know,
- 1:12:00I'm not, I'm not one to like toot my horn, but like hunting
- 1:12:05is the one thing that I know I'm very good at.
- 1:12:08You know what I mean? Like it is what I'm talented at.
- 1:12:11Like not like, like you like you're a talented editor and
- 1:12:14you're talented a lot of things, but that is the one thing that
- 1:12:18I'm like I, you know, I'm very good at, you know, So for me,
- 1:12:22sometimes it's tough to hunt with someone else where I'm
- 1:12:24like, dude, just like if I'm like the guide, I'm like shut up
- 1:12:28and listen type thing when that's a.
- 1:12:29Horrible. Way to be.
- 1:12:31And I kind of like, I'm not saying you did that, but like
- 1:12:34the first couple days you were given a lot of input and I'm
- 1:12:36like, oh, this is what it feels like when I do it to others.
- 1:12:40You know what I mean? Actually, I shit you not, dude.
- 1:12:43You taught me a good lesson just by us interacting.
- 1:12:46And then after that first day, the two of us learned much
- 1:12:49better. How?
- 1:12:49Like our first day was kind of rough, granted.
- 1:12:51Like I was tired of shit. You were tired of shit.
- 1:12:53Like I'm sure that played actors.
- 1:12:55I'm normally with people that I'm not only, you know, guiding.
- 1:13:00I'm like mentoring, right? And so I, I very quickly had to
- 1:13:04just remember like he's been hunting for 2025 plus years,
- 1:13:09like he does not need me to tell him how to hunt.
- 1:13:12Maybe just like where the animals might move.
- 1:13:14What, what kind of what have I seen while I've haunted yet?
- 1:13:17That's some valuable input for sure.
- 1:13:19Like leave you to just do your thing.
- 1:13:21But dude, like that, That's what I'm saying though, why I like
- 1:13:24hunting with others is because you never know what lesson
- 1:13:26you're going to pull from it. I actually learned and it's not
- 1:13:29a knock on you, it's just our first day.
- 1:13:30Like I said, learning how to work with each other, being
- 1:13:32super tired. And passionate.
- 1:13:35Both and, and both being passionate, like I learn now,
- 1:13:39like, oh shoot, you know what? When I say shit like that to
- 1:13:42Brianna or my dad, like, it probably makes them feel like
- 1:13:45like ass, like really dumb. And that taught me such a good
- 1:13:49lesson. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:13:51And it wasn't your fault. It wasn't my fault.
- 1:13:54And it was just like how we were interacting.
- 1:13:56And then by now, by day four, bro, like we've learned how to
- 1:13:59hunt with each other a lot better.
- 1:14:01We'll still like it's a. Very high success rate.
- 1:14:04Very high, yeah. I mean, we've shot.
- 1:14:06So our goal here was 5 things. Unfortunately, one of the
- 1:14:09animals we we aren't going to get a crack at, but we're
- 1:14:12replacing. Other things.
- 1:14:13Yeah, we're replacing that we. Do it in Yala and you can do a
- 1:14:16blessed buck. And you and you know, I want to
- 1:14:18go after another blessed buck. So that's going to be our plan.
- 1:14:20And if we get it, we're going to go 5 for five because 5 was our
- 1:14:23goal. I'll be very proud of that.
- 1:14:25So we're going to go out there. But there's a twist, there's a
- 1:14:28twist, there's a twist. You tell the twist.
- 1:14:30No, we're going to tell them now.
- 1:14:31When is this podcast coming out? We've left certain details up.
- 1:14:34It'll. Probably be out.
- 1:14:37It'll it'll probably be out next Wednesday.
- 1:14:40All right, that's not not this. Coming one the one after.
- 1:14:42That's not enough time. Yeah, let's just say we're
- 1:14:45putting the theory of camo to. Test the test.
- 1:14:48That's that's as much as we can, isn't that important?
- 1:14:51Yeah, and I, I know my opinion, but I'm.
- 1:14:54Going to hold it till after we do the video.
- 1:14:55Yeah, Oh, let's prove it. Yeah, let's prove it.
- 1:14:57Yeah. And I can't wait to get out
- 1:14:59there. So you also have shot a draft
- 1:15:04with a bow. Yes, I.
- 1:15:05Had. Now that's one that you know.
- 1:15:09Can. Give me an hot.
- 1:15:10Water, especially if you're in America and you post that like
- 1:15:12at. Least I'm not a dentist, you
- 1:15:14can't cancel me if I have no money.
- 1:15:17Exactly. So tell me, tell me about.
- 1:15:20Tell me, what was it like aiming up at something like because
- 1:15:23I've shot uphill, you know, I've shot like deer uphill.
- 1:15:26You're actually on flat, I'm assuming aiming up.
- 1:15:28Very flat look. It's almost like aiming for 100
- 1:15:31yard shot. It's the same kind of pitch, but
- 1:15:34it was more the training, the preparation, learning because
- 1:15:36it's the only animal. And I never told you this.
- 1:15:39I've got a hold like pitch deck to help people understand
- 1:15:42African hunting and shop placement, all that kind of
- 1:15:44stuff. It's the only African animal
- 1:15:47that's vitals are absolutely not in the same place as any other
- 1:15:50animal in Africa. If you shoot it where I've been
- 1:15:52teaching you to shoot all the other animals.
- 1:15:53Super forward it's. So forward, so you've.
- 1:15:56Got to hit them even further forward.
- 1:15:58Not up the leg. You're missing vitals.
- 1:16:00So you have to hit them like in front of the leg.
- 1:16:02Like that elbow that goes so far out that I always call it the
- 1:16:05boob. Wow.
- 1:16:07You have to hit them in that sweet spot over there.
- 1:16:09So it was training, understanding, and it was the
- 1:16:12third animal I've ever haunted with a bow.
- 1:16:14The opportunity came and I took it.
- 1:16:15So not only was I very new bow hunter, but I had to like learn
- 1:16:20a whole new species to understand how I must shoot it.
- 1:16:22So that was cool. The only time I've ever shot an
- 1:16:25animal with a fixed blade brought it.
- 1:16:26Oh really? Which one do you use?
- 1:16:28Two blade, 2 blade, single bevel oz cut.
- 1:16:31And what was? How was the performance?
- 1:16:32Pass through. Pass through broadside,
- 1:16:36broadside. Yeah, so it literally went like
- 1:16:3960. Dude, do you know how much time
- 1:16:43we have left? Can you check that real?
- 1:16:44Quick. Quick, little, quick little
- 1:16:46break. Oh, I did want to touch on
- 1:16:47something because you said you pass through that draft with the
- 1:16:49fixed blade. Yes, kind of a broken record,
- 1:16:54but it's always such a kind of a good topic.
- 1:16:57I for the first time broke into the 500 Club with my arrows
- 1:17:00weight wise and we blew through three of the four things like
- 1:17:05butter. Standing still on a hot day, I
- 1:17:08blew through by 10 yards into the dirt like crazy.
- 1:17:11Stuff. So.
- 1:17:15Are you saying you haven't had? That I'm somewhat intrigued.
- 1:17:18No, I do not. Normally I do not get many pass
- 1:17:21throughs. I'll be honest.
- 1:17:21And maybe the animals are harder that I'm hitting.
- 1:17:24That's definitely possible. But I've shot animal a lot of
- 1:17:28animals at shorter distances and not had pass throughs with my
- 1:17:33old setup. And again, that could be a body
- 1:17:35composition thing or it could be that these heavy.
- 1:17:41Arrows Heavy arrow makes for a nasty combination.
- 1:17:44Or it could be a combination, you know, both things.
- 1:17:46Kind of. Yeah.
- 1:17:47Dude, I got to tell you, I have been, I have been so impressed
- 1:17:53with the Arrows and the Broadheads performance, just how
- 1:17:57hard they're hitting stuff and just blowing so far through and
- 1:18:02then not only skipping, they're actually like digging into the
- 1:18:05dirt. A good half arrow length,
- 1:18:07sometimes into the dirt. 10 yards past the animal.
- 1:18:10That's incredible. And I know that you were the
- 1:18:13one. Actually, you're the reason I
- 1:18:15brought a 516 Green Arrow. Did you get that idea from Seppi
- 1:18:22at your shop or did you get it from YouTube?
- 1:18:25What made you kind of choose to go a little bit heavier than
- 1:18:28like, say, your standard 440? The dude that introduced me to
- 1:18:32bar hunting. Crazy fella.
- 1:18:34Good for we going hunting for our birthdays in May.
- 1:18:36I'm 7th, he's the 25th. We kind of go in between the
- 1:18:4018th and the 25th. So very good friend of mine, and
- 1:18:43he is, he was, unfortunately he's got a shoulder injury, so
- 1:18:47he has to shoot lighter because he's shooting not a pondage, but
- 1:18:50he was obsessed with who's the guy overseas that's always
- 1:18:53talking about heavy arrows that you guys talk.
- 1:18:55About branch fairy. Yes.
- 1:18:56So he was obsessed with ranch fairy ranch fairies theory.
- 1:19:00That's a tongue twister. And so he was obsessed with the
- 1:19:03six hundreds and the six 50s on just like average antelope.
- 1:19:06I was never there. I've never, I've always believed
- 1:19:10in a weight and a blend of speed is going to get you like
- 1:19:13anything you want to hunt. But yeah, I messed around.
- 1:19:16I started at 4:20, then 4:50, then 470, then 500, then 520,
- 1:19:21then 550. And I've been hovering around
- 1:19:255:50 to 580 for the last 2 1/2 years, two years.
- 1:19:30And really the first time I built such a heavy area, the
- 1:19:335:50 to 580, was for a survivor haunted, my first survivor hunt
- 1:19:36on the YouTube channel. No, it wasn't.
- 1:19:39It was my first walking stalk hunt and that is also on the
- 1:19:42YouTube channel. A female wildebeest, 33 yards
- 1:19:45frontal. She was actually in motion.
- 1:19:47To So is it frontal how I call it or how you call it?
- 1:19:51Quartering 2. Quartering 2, OK.
- 1:19:55I'm like, where did you shoot it?
- 1:19:57Yeah, like in the front. Well, frontal.
- 1:19:59No, quarter 2, so it was so it was quarter 2.
- 1:20:01So it wasn't like this. Yeah, she had her head turned
- 1:20:03and I put it down the. Side, OK, got it.
- 1:20:05Got it. And what was the penetration?
- 1:20:08It like came out her, behind her.
- 1:20:10Rear quarter. And that is a thick animal,
- 1:20:14thick animal. And it's not the soft stuff when
- 1:20:16you're sitting in front and it has to go through all the
- 1:20:18tissue, the muscle, the meat, the and it just blew through her
- 1:20:2133 yards. We got lung, heart, liver and
- 1:20:26then stopped in the she just went down on on camera.
- 1:20:29And so I was like, if I can do that to a Volder beast, I could
- 1:20:32pretty much do that to anything. And I've been shooting them
- 1:20:34since and then I wanted to go to a light arrow on this property,
- 1:20:39one of my last hands, 470 grains and but I used A2 inch broadhead
- 1:20:45server that locks open, but it has that swivel neck.
- 1:20:47Oh yeah, that's cool tip. But dude, it stopped like a
- 1:20:49freaking handbrake like 1 1/2 inches into the hide at 88
- 1:20:54yards. What was the animal bliss?
- 1:20:56Brook and it was a perfect. You didn't shoulder punch it.
- 1:21:00And it was like it was perfect double lung quite a bit back as
- 1:21:03well. Interest just didn't get
- 1:21:05penetration. And that bothered me because
- 1:21:07I've, I get postures on zebra. I mean, at 88 yards, my father's
- 1:21:12actually 76, a bliss Buck 88 and I recently I did a Bliss buck 99
- 1:21:16complete pass through and stuck into the ground.
- 1:21:19So I've never had that before. And I think that shy me away.
- 1:21:22But then when you built the 500 grand arrows, I thought to
- 1:21:25myself, it was it had to, I have to give it another chance.
- 1:21:28It was just a fluke thing. I don't normally shoot big
- 1:21:31cutting broadheads. I'm like a 1.5 kind of guy.
- 1:21:33And now they have a hybrid. So shoot the hybrid.
- 1:21:36And so I'm going to give it a go after all these.
- 1:21:39I was going to do it on a Saturday before you landed
- 1:21:42Saturday night, like reciting re tune re everything.
- 1:21:45But when I get back, I've got 470 grand 4mm Deep Impact
- 1:21:50errors. I'm going to change out the
- 1:21:51Fletchers because they are just too giant for such a small shaft
- 1:21:54and I'm going to give it a go. I'm going to see.
- 1:21:56I think you. Should performs on all these
- 1:21:59animals that I'm hunting. Yeah, I think I personally think
- 1:22:01for your test you should go lighter, but either what?
- 1:22:03String jumping. I think it'll.
- 1:22:05Help the string jumping. We saw it on this trip.
- 1:22:08Several times. I don't have it as much.
- 1:22:10Again, maybe we can get into that very short conversation.
- 1:22:13But Fletchers, I mean, no matter what, I mean, you've been
- 1:22:17shooting great. When we slow down that footage,
- 1:22:20exactly what you're aiming is where impact is made.
- 1:22:23But I do believe those, you know, like Boeing has incredible
- 1:22:27range of flitches. And I would have liked to see
- 1:22:29like a little bit low profile, rounded edges, keep it as quiet
- 1:22:32as possible. But we're smoking them.
- 1:22:35But I'm starting to realize if my arrow can just get there a
- 1:22:37little bit faster, I don't have to worry so much about how
- 1:22:41reactive they are. Because you saw on that bliss
- 1:22:43back at 70 yards, it was 2 animals away by the time the era
- 1:22:46got. Yeah, wasn't that crazy 2.
- 1:22:48Full body lays away. That was insane.
- 1:22:50Yeah, I would be interested for you to if you can reduce those
- 1:22:53arrows even. I'm gonna bring it down, I'll go
- 1:22:55on a hunt and I'll give you the data.
- 1:22:56Yeah, that's what I want. I want you to try it and see how
- 1:22:58it is like. I want you to Yeah, just.
- 1:23:01All archery is about confidence for sure, and confidence in your
- 1:23:05gear. Dude, and I'm telling you like.
- 1:23:06The guys that taught me were shooting 400 to 420 grain.
- 1:23:10Now they blew through everything.
- 1:23:12They killed everything they shot at.
- 1:23:14The only argument I make is the way we hunt, You know, hard hunt
- 1:23:19seems very easy. The water truffle, whatever is
- 1:23:21positioned, especially in Africa, it's positioned in a way
- 1:23:24that it forces them to be broadside, wait for the shot,
- 1:23:27execute it. The only thing you have to face
- 1:23:29is if they're a bit jumpy, then you know they're going to string
- 1:23:31jump you some bit. But it's a 20 yard shot, 25 yard
- 1:23:34shot. What we take is we have to take
- 1:23:37the shot that's presented to us before it's too close, that we
- 1:23:40don't have an opportunity. We are.
- 1:23:41And sometimes it's frontal, it's, it's quartering 2, it's
- 1:23:44quartering away. It's, it's weird stuff that we
- 1:23:47need our arrows to be able to penetrate more than just soft
- 1:23:50tissue broadside shots. And so that's kind of why I
- 1:23:54built a heavy arrow. But you're not that much longer
- 1:23:58and draw length than me. And the speed would make up for
- 1:24:01the weight that I'm going to be shaving off the arrow.
- 1:24:03And so I'm keen to Yeah, well, I, I think everything's
- 1:24:07opinionated. Oh, dude, guys are successful
- 1:24:09with 400 grams on a freaking bison.
- 1:24:11Guys are successful single bevel 650I.
- 1:24:15I think we need to shoot what we believe in.
- 1:24:18In the Bush. We go with confidence more than
- 1:24:21anything. Yeah, I, I totally agree.
- 1:24:23I think what whatever setup that you feel most repeatable with
- 1:24:25and most confident and comfortable in, that's what I
- 1:24:28think you should go with. This morning I saw guidepost.
- 1:24:31It's like a super old bow, like 20 years old.
- 1:24:34You can see like not a ton of money and gear.
- 1:24:36And they had shot a raid stag in New Zealand.
- 1:24:39And I was like, I told you, I'm like, I'm so happy to see people
- 1:24:42using like all the gear or more affordable gear because you
- 1:24:45don't have to get super focused on the gear.
- 1:24:48It's all about the confidence and the execution behind the
- 1:24:52apparatus or the bow or the crossbow, whatever you shoot
- 1:24:55him. Yeah, without question, without
- 1:24:57question. I almost entirely wear camo from
- 1:25:01Walmart, which is like a superstore super cheap budget
- 1:25:03store like this I bought for like so mega cheap.
- 1:25:07None of my gear is. I mean now that I have some
- 1:25:10sponsorships, I have access because you know me, I'm a cheap
- 1:25:12bastard. So like, but prior to having
- 1:25:14sponsorships, bro, most of my shit I had had for 15 years, you
- 1:25:17know what I mean? Even now still some like my
- 1:25:20range Finder at least I've had a decade at the least, you know?
- 1:25:24But it's not about the gear. It's really not.
- 1:25:27And I do shoot gear I like for sure.
- 1:25:32But gear is not going to make or break you being successful or
- 1:25:36accurate. It's just not.
- 1:25:38And maybe my sponsors wouldn't like me saying that, but it's
- 1:25:41the truth, you know? And I.
- 1:25:43Don't like seeing kids, you know, trying to afford a $2000
- 1:25:47boat because they, you know, watched a famous Influences
- 1:25:50video and I think they need that.
- 1:25:51Like you? Really.
- 1:25:52You really don't. No, yeah, you just refine your
- 1:25:56hunting, refine your hunting skills.
- 1:25:57If you get your ego wrapped up in it, it gets very expensive,
- 1:26:00but if you love hunting then you'll get anything in your
- 1:26:03hands so you can get out there and actually hunt.
- 1:26:05Facts. All right, I want to know about
- 1:26:07your, you've talked about it numerous Times Now, kind of your
- 1:26:11local bow shop. So I'll tell you about mine,
- 1:26:13Right. So in San Diego, we used to have
- 1:26:16three shops. Now we have 2.
- 1:26:18I go to one of the two and then the other one I'll go
- 1:26:21occasionally do practice indoor. So we have bow and arrow shop
- 1:26:23and then we have performance archery and I always go to bow
- 1:26:27and arrow shop. That's just where I've always
- 1:26:29gone. So that's where I go.
- 1:26:31And then it's it's great. There's kind of a sense of
- 1:26:35community there. There's good archery knowledge.
- 1:26:38There's people to work on your bows.
- 1:26:40I would assume that your bow shop experience is somewhat
- 1:26:44similar to that, you know, like, is that the case?
- 1:26:47Like what's what's what's some pro shop look like out here?
- 1:26:49Obviously. And what is there's a lot less
- 1:26:52pro shops because we just, we're a much smaller country, much
- 1:26:56smaller hunting community, especially in the archery
- 1:26:58business. But I work with a company called
- 1:27:01Magnum Archery. So they're up in Pretoria.
- 1:27:03It's like a 45 minute drive from me, but a very popular part of
- 1:27:08town, should I say. And yeah, I actually wasn't
- 1:27:12always working with them. I when I was running my YouTube
- 1:27:15channel, I was like a bit of an independent for about a year and
- 1:27:19a bit. And then I realized like I had a
- 1:27:20lack of access to gear. I couldn't do gear reviews.
- 1:27:22I couldn't do, you know, any of those kinds of things.
- 1:27:25And I was running out of opportunities to make proper
- 1:27:28content. And the same dude, James, that
- 1:27:32I'm going hunting with and introduced me to bow hunting is
- 1:27:34the same dude that introduced me to the owner of Magnum Autry
- 1:27:36Sippy. And we met February last year, I
- 1:27:40had 1000 Subs at the time. And he was just like, let's give
- 1:27:46it a go. Like I've got nothing to lose.
- 1:27:48You, you shoot a bow, you go do your thing, you bring it back,
- 1:27:50switch it off for another one. And you make your videos.
- 1:27:53And you know, he's a very long term kind of guy.
- 1:27:56He's like, I'm not going to reap the benefits right away, but I,
- 1:28:00I know you're going to make a success of it.
- 1:28:02And we're going to, we're going to bounce off of that success at
- 1:28:04some point in the future. And, and he just believed in me.
- 1:28:08And from there, I was able to tap into high end bows and high
- 1:28:12end gear and good bow technicians and guys that could
- 1:28:15teach me. And quite frankly, I don't think
- 1:28:17I'd be here today without, without him giving that
- 1:28:20opportunity because it was this very same guy that, you know,
- 1:28:23June last year, I called in to say that a big court case where
- 1:28:26an arrest went wrong. It was finally over and I can
- 1:28:29not have to explain to employers why I need to go to court twice
- 1:28:33a month without them thinking I'm just some scallywag and and
- 1:28:37he's in the same phone call was like, well, you won't believe
- 1:28:39it. I just told my wife this
- 1:28:40morning, I think I need to talk to you about, you know, doing
- 1:28:43YouTube full time and coming to help us out and get us, you
- 1:28:46know, more updated. And I resigned the following
- 1:28:49week and you know, every day, every day, or if not every week,
- 1:28:53he drawed like this is a stepping stone.
- 1:28:55You're not going to be here for long.
- 1:28:56He's like try and set us up, but you're not going to be here for
- 1:28:59long. You're not going to be here for
- 1:29:00and you know, beginning of December, end of November, I
- 1:29:04told him I'm starting my own business and he was just like
- 1:29:06all in wanting to support me. So he's just been pivotal in, in
- 1:29:11being like that support structure, a ready and a
- 1:29:13successful entrepreneur. But he saw value in me, saw
- 1:29:17potential and future value in me.
- 1:29:20And he's just been, yeah, super pivotal in the reason I can do
- 1:29:24this for a living, The reason I can sit here.
- 1:29:26Well, I can hunt for the next three weeks making content and
- 1:29:29not sit in some cubicle or be on the road in some kind of
- 1:29:32shootouts and stuff like that and that kind of nonsense.
- 1:29:35Like just super pivotal in just like an engagement in February,
- 1:29:39an opportunity in June, constant motivation that I'm meant for so
- 1:29:43much more. And this is just a stepping
- 1:29:44stone to be in like my first client in my business that I
- 1:29:47started. So yeah, I'd say probably the
- 1:29:50most influential guy so far in the journey.
- 1:29:53So look at that a local bow shop led to like networking
- 1:29:58essentially that change your. Life again.
- 1:30:00I told you this, I wouldn't have known the gentleman that owns
- 1:30:04Zeelands River Safaris if I didn't get the opportunity at a
- 1:30:07Magnum and happened to be in the shop the day the guy that owns
- 1:30:10this comes in and says, my friend shoots a bow.
- 1:30:14And it really intrigues me because I've haunted with rifles
- 1:30:16for 30 years. And it's like, oh cool, let me
- 1:30:18get you set up. And he's like, well, you know
- 1:30:20how he talks my China, you must come hunt with us, my brew and
- 1:30:27and we just hit it off. And then that was my second
- 1:30:29client. And then I have the target
- 1:30:31business Wild 3D and it just snowballed from there.
- 1:30:34But it all stems from a dude. There was like this dude with
- 1:30:381000 Subs that doesn't deserve the resources I'm about to give
- 1:30:41him, but I know he's going to make it someday.
- 1:30:44And I want to Piggy Bank off that.
- 1:30:46And so just incredible journey so far.
- 1:30:49Yeah, I mean, so often in life I've noticed and I've
- 1:30:52experienced as many times in my bike riding journey, my real
- 1:30:57estate journey, and now my hunting and archery journey as
- 1:31:02like what I did for a profession.
- 1:31:04Each one of those times it always took one big door opening
- 1:31:11and someone given me a shot. And beyond that, it's like you
- 1:31:16prove it, OK, they gave me a shot, I'm going to make it.
- 1:31:18Well, well worth it. Then you do.
- 1:31:21They might say something or someone else notices another
- 1:31:24door opens. Once you get that first big door
- 1:31:27open. Bro the Sky's the limit as long
- 1:31:31as you drill. Yourself a lower card and don't
- 1:31:34burn the bridge. Yeah, and don't.
- 1:31:35Bite the hand that fed you. Right.
- 1:31:37And and most importantly, like don't be a fraud, you know, like
- 1:31:40if you claim to provide a certain thing or like in my
- 1:31:44sense, like when sponsors work with me, generally it's that I
- 1:31:46provide viewership and constant output of content.
- 1:31:51Now if I signed with a if I signed a one year contract and
- 1:31:54companies paying me money and then all of the sudden I just
- 1:31:57stopped posting, that would be me essentially dropping the ball
- 1:32:03and being a fraud. Don't do that.
- 1:32:06Stick to it. Stick to it and you're good to
- 1:32:08go. But I I just think that's so
- 1:32:10cool. You got that door, couple doors
- 1:32:12open and it led to more doors and.
- 1:32:14And also do a good job looking after people that gave you that
- 1:32:16opportunity and other opportunities.
- 1:32:18Just like I've actually had to put a bunch of things on pause
- 1:32:22until the end of April. It's just a busy month.
- 1:32:25Like no, no client meetings, no potential, but these guys are
- 1:32:29literally opening doors just because you've looked after
- 1:32:31them. And that's be genuine.
- 1:32:33Look after the people that have looked after you and you'll go a
- 1:32:36long way. And you said it the other day,
- 1:32:38when people are switching friends and switching sponsors
- 1:32:40and switching people that they hang around with frequently,
- 1:32:44there's a problem. Be very, very careful with those
- 1:32:47people. And unfortunately, I've been bit
- 1:32:49by a couple, luckily not too many times.
- 1:32:51But I will say this, although the situation really sucked and
- 1:32:56I'm going to talk about it because I've mentioned it many
- 1:32:58times, I've never talked about it, but I'm going to talk about
- 1:33:00the situation probably in like the next podcast I do.
- 1:33:03But I'm in a way very grateful that I got burned so badly and
- 1:33:09out of pure spite and evil. You know what I mean?
- 1:33:11Like no, there was nothing true or grounded because you know
- 1:33:15what that did dude, That all that did was light a major fire
- 1:33:21under me and I, I turned into rocket fuel dude.
- 1:33:24When when that whole situation happened, I think I had maybe
- 1:33:3010,000 Subs and like 4000 on Instagram.
- 1:33:34Probably not even 1000 on TikTok or Facebook.
- 1:33:37Maybe they didn't even exist yet.
- 1:33:39Now we're at 100 on YouTube, 76 or whatever on Instagram, 27 on
- 1:33:46Facebook, 20 on TikTok, all since then.
- 1:33:50It like that was when it started.
- 1:33:53So because all it did was put wind in my sails that didn't.
- 1:33:57Change percent. So if you can.
- 1:33:59Use people that have evil intent to just say oh boy you've really
- 1:34:05messed up by going against. Well, we said it last night,
- 1:34:07make your success your revenge, if exactly, and not that that
- 1:34:13must be your motivation whatsoever, but you know, rather
- 1:34:18than stooping, sloping down and fighting at at their low level,
- 1:34:22focus on you, stay on the path, keep moving forward and your
- 1:34:27success will be your revenge. Bingo.
- 1:34:29And a lot of these people just want to pull you down and know
- 1:34:32what I'll. Crab in a bucket, we call it.
- 1:34:34You know what I've noticed, and this is something I haven't told
- 1:34:36you, but we speak so deep about all the stuff is people like us
- 1:34:40that shoot for our dreams, like quit a job and decide they're
- 1:34:44going to do YouTube full time with the company and all that
- 1:34:46kind of stuff. Like and really shoot for it.
- 1:34:49People have animosity towards us because we expose their lack of
- 1:34:53action towards their own goals and dreams and it creates
- 1:34:57insecurities and instead of acting on them, they lash out.
- 1:35:01And those are the people that are sending this the the shitty
- 1:35:03comments and shitting on you and, you know, trying, trying to
- 1:35:07tell you that you're a shit shot or whatever.
- 1:35:09Those are the people that just don't have enough going on in
- 1:35:12life or aren't going for the thing they want.
- 1:35:14And it's just creating this animosity that they're watching
- 1:35:16someone do it when they're not doing it.
- 1:35:19And so I always say, you know, you are exposing something in
- 1:35:25themselves that they don't like. Yeah, in a way it's a therapy
- 1:35:27session or like self self reflection session, you know,
- 1:35:31and I've been guilty of it in the past.
- 1:35:32When I was younger, there was a guy from my hometown that was
- 1:35:37kind of doing like early on, like YouTube influencing
- 1:35:41essentially like really early as far as like where we're at now
- 1:35:44and in YouTube. And I used to be like, I used to
- 1:35:49watch him out of like, Oh my gosh, look how trash that I used
- 1:35:52to be that guy. I really did.
- 1:35:54I'm not anymore. Hate.
- 1:35:55Jealousy disguised as hate. And now I'm a fan.
- 1:35:58Spoke about it a lot. Yeah, like yeah, we're me and
- 1:36:00that dude are friends now, you know what I mean?
- 1:36:02And like, but I'm never, I will never have that mentality
- 1:36:05towards someone again. It was just me being in a loser
- 1:36:07space and not like having a whole lot going on.
- 1:36:11And then you start to like, Oh well, the only reason they're
- 1:36:13doing it is because of Bobby. Like rather than doing it,
- 1:36:16you're just like making excuses. And I said it to you last night,
- 1:36:21it's easier for people to believe that they had the
- 1:36:24potential to be a success than rather shoot for it and fail.
- 1:36:30They would rather live, yeah, in an alternate universe of
- 1:36:34success, right? Then actually do it.
- 1:36:36Yeah, like a pretend thing. How do I could leave and I said
- 1:36:39it said I could I could do the videos that both asylums.
- 1:36:43You know, I could. Oh sure I could.
- 1:36:45Go ahead. But there's no, there's no
- 1:36:46action because they know the level or one, maybe they don't
- 1:36:51realize or overshoot their potential, but there's a chance
- 1:36:54of failing. And people are just so fearful
- 1:36:56of failing. Dude, so true man.
- 1:36:58And like I said, dude, I really appreciate you giving me this
- 1:37:03opportunity and kind of choosing me as the first one to to.
- 1:37:06Kind of not crying. I've got so much sun cream in
- 1:37:08the left eye. But dude, I I just.
- 1:37:11Appreciate you giving me the chance and, and believing in and
- 1:37:13believing that I would come out here and, and do a good job with
- 1:37:16you guys and. I'm just so glad we got along.
- 1:37:19Very similar personalities, similar hunters.
- 1:37:22I don't think I've ever laughed so hard on a safari drive as I
- 1:37:25did last night. I think our car hated us.
- 1:37:29Only one lady. We were the goofy kids at the
- 1:37:32back of the bus, but but it's been such a good time and to
- 1:37:38this is the power of YouTube. This is the power of social
- 1:37:40media. We're.
- 1:37:40Sitting here on the opposite side of the earth, together.
- 1:37:43And we had never met until the day you landed to come and sleep
- 1:37:46at my house. That's special, man.
- 1:37:48I mean, I, I, I know sometimes people like to especially, I
- 1:37:52don't know, sometimes people have a very bitter view towards
- 1:37:54the Internet. And if, if it wasn't for the
- 1:37:58Internet, there's absolutely zero chance we would ever cross
- 1:38:01paths. I've been sharing them. 100%.
- 1:38:04So I'm very grateful for that. I think you're a really good
- 1:38:06dude. I'm rooting for you.
- 1:38:07I hope, I hope we both go to the moon and, and just continue to
- 1:38:11grow and and and. I have a saying that's get to
- 1:38:15honey in me. You can't fail if you don't
- 1:38:18quit. Correct.
- 1:38:19Yeah, so true. So.
- 1:38:20True, you'll have dips, you'll have highs, you'll have lows,
- 1:38:23but you cannot fail if you don't quit.
- 1:38:25Well, brother, thanks so much everyone.
- 1:38:27Subscribe please to outdoors the tracking.
- 1:38:29Hands, but we're about to go throw a gillion and probably go
- 1:38:31get out of it again. No, we've had a few pops.
- 1:38:34Oh, no, no, we won't. We won't.
- 1:38:35We're gonna see we have a Jacuzzi.
- 1:38:37We're gonna hit. We're gonna try, yeah.
- 1:38:40We're rope back in, we're going to try a wood fired jacuzzi,
- 1:38:43which I is nuts I've never even heard.
- 1:38:45Of this so we're. I've never experienced it
- 1:38:47myself. So we're going to try.
- 1:38:48Put this in since the last time I've been.
- 1:38:50Here so we're going to try a wood we'll.
- 1:38:52Put it in the. Oh dude, we're eating zebra too.
- 1:38:54Like, there's kind of crazy. We're actually leaving right now
- 1:38:57to go do it ourselves. Yeah, so we're going to go
- 1:38:59process a zebra, We're going to eat zebra, we're going to try
- 1:39:02the hot tub. That's wood fired.
- 1:39:04And get a good nut. Probably do some target practice
- 1:39:06sleep, which we haven't done much of and really realistically
- 1:39:10we'll probably have another couple couple pops over while
- 1:39:12we're. Processing the zebra so.
- 1:39:15Animals that deserves a few. A few, yeah.
- 1:39:17We've actually done a good job. We did not have any beverages
- 1:39:20days. We did not get something, which
- 1:39:22has been a couple. Yeah.
- 1:39:23So we've actually been very good boys.
- 1:39:26If you're not including caffeine, we've been bad on the
- 1:39:28caffeine. That didn't even drink this much
- 1:39:30energy drinks but the alcohol you are bad influences.
- 1:39:34The alcohol, we've been fine. We we haven't really been
- 1:39:36hitting it, but the caffeine we've been hitting so but yeah,
- 1:39:41dude, I'm I'm so grateful to call you a friend now and I will
- 1:39:45always, if someone asks about you or whatever, I'll always say
- 1:39:49that you're legit dude and a good guy.
- 1:39:51So I'm excited to see where you go and, and we'll, I, I have a
- 1:39:56feeling this one. Is a lot of things in the
- 1:39:58future, Yeah. Whether I come out and check out
- 1:40:00your events sometime in the States or you come back with a
- 1:40:04couple of friends, whatever's going to happen.
- 1:40:06Yeah, I do think we need to get Brianna out.
- 1:40:07Yeah, she deserves it. She does.
- 1:40:09She's been trooping with you. Yeah, she deserves it dude, and
- 1:40:12I would love to just film for her and let her.
- 1:40:14Know this was like a pilot project, first of its kind.
- 1:40:18Yeah, testing the waters. There just wasn't.
- 1:40:20No. Sport, but we.
- 1:40:22Know it is a success yeah we have already made it a success
- 1:40:25before any videos have gone live yeah.
- 1:40:27And so we need to, if you ever come at least once more, we need
- 1:40:30to get Brianna at you A. 100% you know, it would have been
- 1:40:33great to have her this time, but like you said, being that it was
- 1:40:35a pilot, it just, it wasn't, it wouldn't have worked this time,
- 1:40:39but definitely next time. And I think if you had to come
- 1:40:42with her, we wouldn't have. You know, got to go under
- 1:40:44someone on one time. 100% and now that that's there, you know
- 1:40:47she can third wheel, that's fine.
- 1:40:50Exactly. Well, dude, thanks again.
- 1:40:52And guys, like I said, Outdoors with Travis, please subscribe to
