- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to pick up and deliver the podcast where I
- 0:05Speaker 1: pick up my audio recorder as I step out for
- 0:07Speaker 1: a walk and deliver an episode to you while I
- 0:09Speaker 1: stroll around. I'm Brendan Riley or Greetings listeners. It's kind
- 0:23Speaker 1: of a potentially rainy day here in suburban Chicago. In fact,
- 0:28Speaker 1: it does look like I could get rained on so
- 0:30Speaker 1: the bummer. Because I checked the weather earlier and I
- 0:33Speaker 1: said to myself, I'm not gonna get rained on. It
- 0:36Speaker 1: turns out I was wrong. Maybe we'll see. I'll let
- 0:40Speaker 1: you know if it starts raining.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Well.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I am on a break from grading. My eyes are
- 0:45Speaker 1: bleary from looking at screens and typing things. But I
- 0:49Speaker 1: find if I don't take a break and stretch my
- 0:51Speaker 1: legs a little bit, I will get punchy and then
- 0:54Speaker 1: I don't grate as well. So taking a little break
- 0:57Speaker 1: from grading, I thought it would be a good chance
- 0:58Speaker 1: to record an episode for you. I have to get
- 1:00Speaker 1: into my summer rhythm since I am not teaching downtown
- 1:04Speaker 1: during the summer, I'm just working from home, so I
- 1:08Speaker 1: have to develop a different rhythm, and I do want
- 1:10Speaker 1: to keep the podcast going. We are making good time
- 1:14Speaker 1: usually by the end of June, I want to via
- 1:16Speaker 1: episode fifty and I.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Think we're on track for that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We're into the thirties now and it's the end of May,
- 1:25Speaker 1: so that means I just have to do like fifteen
- 1:27Speaker 1: in June.
- 1:28Speaker 2: That should be doable.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, So I thought I would do
- 1:35Speaker 1: today the laziest episode format that I do. I try
- 1:39Speaker 1: not to do it too often because while I enjoy it,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I wonder I can't tell whether it's actually entertainment, entertaining
- 1:44Speaker 1: or not. So let me know if you think it's
- 1:47Speaker 1: entertaining or not. Heading over to Board Game Geek Guild
- 1:49Speaker 1: three two six' nine and posting, there you could start
- 1:52Speaker 1: a poll with the other. Listeners given THAT i have
- 1:54Speaker 1: not heard Anyoneesday, BRENDAN i hate those, episodes or EVEN
- 1:57Speaker 1: i really dislike those. Episodes i'm gonna keep doing them
- 2:00Speaker 1: every now and, again less often THAN i would feel
- 2:03Speaker 1: like doing, them but hopefully not more often than you'd
- 2:06Speaker 1: want me. To that's why it's time for The Geek.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Asks The Geek asks as a sort of particularly narcissistic
- 2:12Speaker 1: approach to doing a. Podcast, essentially WHAT i do IS
- 2:16Speaker 1: i open up The Board Game geek recent forums AND
- 2:19Speaker 1: i scroll backwards through, them so starting at the most
- 2:21Speaker 1: recent post and working my way, backwards AND i just
- 2:24Speaker 1: look at the title of the forum posts AND i
- 2:28Speaker 1: imagine that these are all posted here ask questions or
- 2:32Speaker 1: idea prompts for me to comment a little. Bit and
- 2:35Speaker 1: WHEN i see one THAT i think is, USEFUL i
- 2:37Speaker 1: do not click through to the actual. Forum SO i
- 2:40Speaker 1: may be entirely misrepresenting what the forum is. About, Instead
- 2:43Speaker 1: i'm just representing to you WHAT i think it's, about
- 2:46Speaker 1: based on, vibes based on WHAT i interpret from the initial. Title,
- 2:53Speaker 1: okay so now you get the. Gimmick let's jump into.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It let's See negotia in games is one of the.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Threads so top negotiation games for, me, Obviously Siderial confluence
- 3:08Speaker 1: is the top. One that game has real time, negotiation
- 3:11Speaker 1: and it's an interesting game where it's about it's about
- 3:14Speaker 1: not it is you do want to do better in
- 3:16Speaker 1: negotiating than the other, players but it is a game
- 3:20Speaker 1: that encourages, cooperation not just trying to screw the other
- 3:24Speaker 1: person through negotiation. KTAN i find the negotiation in that
- 3:29Speaker 1: pretty unfun because as soon as SOMEBODY'S i, head no
- 3:33Speaker 1: one wants to trade with them and THEN i guess
- 3:36Speaker 1: games where you end up making diplomatic connections with other
- 3:40Speaker 1: players would be the other kind of game WHERE i
- 3:42Speaker 1: find negotiations something you have to do much. OF i
- 3:46Speaker 1: can't think of a ton of other negotiation, games, Though
- 3:49Speaker 1: i'd love to.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Hear what are some of your.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Favorites let's, see apparently the Spiel disyrs nominees are. Out
- 3:58Speaker 1: Maybe i'll do an episode on that. Later trying to
- 4:01Speaker 1: replace a stock image need? HELP i wonder if this
- 4:04Speaker 1: person has a stock image that they want to use
- 4:08Speaker 1: that they are trying to get rid. OF i would
- 4:10Speaker 1: go to, unsplash which has a lot of free to use.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Images you could also there are a number of sites
- 4:16Speaker 1: where you can pay to use a stock. Image if
- 4:20Speaker 1: you use the stock image that you didn't have licensed, for,
- 4:22Speaker 1: well that's that's not a great. Choice check out Creative
- 4:25Speaker 1: commons or archive dot.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Org there's a.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Ton of public domain images that you could. USE i
- 4:30Speaker 1: always like games where they make good work of. That
- 4:32Speaker 1: Todd sanders has a whole project where he finds cool
- 4:36Speaker 1: public domain images and makes neat games out of. Them
- 4:40Speaker 1: Dungeon crawlers with easy. Setup, oh that is not a
- 4:44Speaker 1: thing that there are a ton, OF i Mean. Gloomhaven
- 4:47Speaker 1: even the ones where have the, notebooks which are much
- 4:49Speaker 1: easier set up than the ones with the, tiles it's
- 4:51Speaker 1: still a ton of.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Setup.
- 4:54Speaker 1: YEAH i can't think of very many dungeon callers with
- 4:57Speaker 1: easy setup because they tend to have a lot of different,
- 5:01Speaker 1: pieces and part of what's fun of dungeon callers is
- 5:03Speaker 1: they have tons of stuff on the, table and so
- 5:07Speaker 1: easy setup would.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Mean less stuff on the.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Table maybe eight board game re THEMES i made for,
- 5:14Speaker 1: fun all, RIGHT i will brainstorm a couple of board
- 5:16Speaker 1: game re themes While i'm. Here these are games THAT
- 5:19Speaker 1: i really like THAT i would love to see done
- 5:21Speaker 1: in a, different more interesting. Theme, WELL i really dislike
- 5:27Speaker 1: games about, colonization so games where you are trying to
- 5:32Speaker 1: settle and build things without colonizing would be one category
- 5:37Speaker 1: of GAME i would like to see re themed in
- 5:41Speaker 1: an interesting. WAY i Guess Santo domingo is a game
- 5:44Speaker 1: THAT i really, like AND i don't care for the
- 5:46Speaker 1: theme at, All So i'd be interested to know what
- 5:49Speaker 1: change somebody might make To Santo.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Domingo what would? That what WOULD i how WOULD i
- 5:56Speaker 2: redo the theme Of Santo.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Domingo so In Santo, domingo you play a harbor, person
- 6:01Speaker 1: a harbor, master and you are. Negotiating you're basically trying
- 6:05Speaker 1: to get trading and shipping, rights so you're trying to
- 6:12Speaker 1: anticipate what the other players are going to. Do and
- 6:15Speaker 1: there are these currencies that you can sell for, money
- 6:18Speaker 1: or you can just get our. Currencies you can sell for,
- 6:21Speaker 1: prestige or you can just get, prestige and you gain
- 6:26Speaker 1: it by anticipating what the other players are going to
- 6:31Speaker 1: do with their. Turn SO i think the fun trick
- 6:38Speaker 1: is to try to figure out.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Which one someone else is going to.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Do so what are some games that or what are
- 6:48Speaker 1: some things where figuring out what the other people are
- 6:50Speaker 1: going to do is part of how you. NAVIGATE i
- 6:55Speaker 1: guess it could be a stock market, game THOUGH i
- 6:57Speaker 1: think that that theme is not even as fun as.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Colonization that's not. TRUE i think it's a little better than.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Colonization Man dang. Lawnmowers all, Right what if there was
- 7:14Speaker 1: a game called Food Court rush where you play employees
- 7:19Speaker 1: who have a little bit of flexibility for their time
- 7:24Speaker 1: on their lunch, break but you only have time to
- 7:27Speaker 1: go to the food court And so what you're trying
- 7:29Speaker 1: to do is find the best combination of time to
- 7:33Speaker 1: go to the food court and your plans in the food,
- 7:36Speaker 1: court to get the most out of the experience of
- 7:42Speaker 1: going to the food. Court navigate the combination of which
- 7:49Speaker 1: kind of food you're going to get and.
- 7:53Speaker 2: When you're going to get.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It you could translate the two different currencies In Santo
- 7:57Speaker 1: domingo into two different ways of, understanding and then the reset.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Cards one could be the day that you bring your
- 8:03Speaker 1: own lunch to save money or. SOMETHING i think there's something, there.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Call it food court.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Frenzy, YEAH i think that'd be. Fun all, right let's
- 8:16Speaker 1: see what. Else looking to get into more complex, euros
- 8:20Speaker 1: what is a good step? Up, now of course this
- 8:22Speaker 1: doesn't tell us what the person plays, originally but let's
- 8:27Speaker 1: say that they play mostly party games and mainstream, games
- 8:31Speaker 1: and they've Played catan And ticket To. Ride now they're,
- 8:34Speaker 1: LIKE i want TO i want to get into something more.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Complex SO i think the clear thing to do would
- 8:39Speaker 1: be to go after games that have one step up
- 8:45Speaker 1: in complexity but are still pretty. Accessible so you got
- 8:50Speaker 1: your standard. Rhyner, CANITZIAS i would Suggest through The desert
- 8:53Speaker 1: Or raw both of which have had new, reprintings so
- 8:56Speaker 1: they're easy to get a hold, of something like The
- 8:58Speaker 1: palaces Of karr Or. Patrician these are games where it's
- 9:03Speaker 1: a relatively small rule set that has a relatively large.
- 9:08Speaker 1: PAYOFF i might even suggest a simple worker placement. Game
- 9:13Speaker 1: you could go With, clank which isn't really A, euro.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Or Seven. WONDERS i think Like Seven WONDERS i think.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Is really really. Good it is an excellent mid TIER.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Euro the learning curve is a little, difficult BUT i
- 9:26Speaker 1: think if you have a good, teacher it's not that
- 9:28Speaker 1: hard to. Learn Libertalia winds Of gaealecrest is a good.
- 9:34Speaker 1: One The carcasson is probably two if you're looking to step.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Up carcasson is low. Level that is the same level
- 9:40Speaker 1: As caten Or ticket To. RIDE i don't think it's
- 9:43Speaker 1: one step up to Do. Carcasson Maybe dominion would be.
- 9:47Speaker 2: That one step.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Up so those are all examples of GAMES i would
- 9:52Speaker 1: step up.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Too.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Midweight game four two, WELL i mean most of the
- 9:57Speaker 1: GAMES i, PLAY i play like half the GAMES i
- 10:01Speaker 1: play at two BECAUSE i play them with my. Wife
- 10:04Speaker 1: SO i mean that's a very hard thing to recommend
- 10:07Speaker 1: unless you know what kind of games people. Like for,
- 10:10Speaker 1: me a top tier midweight game for two is going
- 10:12Speaker 1: to Be obsession Or. Wingspan those are kind of our top.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Tiers cartographers is pretty. Good some people don't think of
- 10:23Speaker 1: that one as. MIDWEIGHT i think it depends on how
- 10:25Speaker 1: hard you find it to imagine in the way that
- 10:28Speaker 1: shapes should appear on a. Board i'm looking forward to
- 10:31Speaker 1: Getting Hollows All Hollows.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Eve or Marsh.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Hollow i'm looking forward to Getting marshallow because that's going
- 10:40Speaker 1: to come with clear cards that you can, use so
- 10:43Speaker 1: that'll be. Interesting let's see here new to board slash
- 10:49Speaker 1: card game. Design so using simulation to test the, mechanics,
- 10:55Speaker 1: HUH i MEAN i have read about people using simulate
- 11:00Speaker 1: to test.
- 11:00Speaker 2: MECHANICS I.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I MEAN i wouldn't really know how to go about,
- 11:05Speaker 1: that AND i would worry about its efficacy given THAT
- 11:13Speaker 1: ai is a predictive. Machine it is predicting what you
- 11:15Speaker 1: want to. Hear SO i guess it depends how you're
- 11:18Speaker 1: using at what level you understand what the computer is
- 11:21Speaker 1: doing to test those. Mechanics BUT i prefer playing with
- 11:26Speaker 1: people because a computer can tell you maybe how many
- 11:30Speaker 1: different ways to win a. Thing BUT i don't know
- 11:32Speaker 1: IF i can tell you what's fun on board games
- 11:36Speaker 1: five eighty. Nine. Teachability that's an interesting. Question what DO
- 11:41Speaker 1: i think about WHEN i think about teachability in a?
- 11:43Speaker 1: Game how quickly CAN i summarize what you're doing in the.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Game is there a clear path for your? Turn is
- 11:50Speaker 1: there a clear path to? Victory how many exceptions DO
- 11:54Speaker 1: i have to? Teach Seven wonders is a good example
- 11:59Speaker 1: of a game THAT i think is actually for people
- 12:01Speaker 1: who've played it a couple of, times it seems. EASY
- 12:05Speaker 1: i sit down to Play Seven wonders with people who've
- 12:07Speaker 1: played it, before boom boom, boom where it's forty five,
- 12:10Speaker 1: minutes half an, hour forty five, minutes plays smooth and.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Easy it's.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Great but you sit down and play with new, people
- 12:17Speaker 1: if they've played a lot of, games it probably comes
- 12:20Speaker 1: smooth and. Easy but there's a couple of things that
- 12:22Speaker 1: you really have to hit very clearly when you teach
- 12:25Speaker 1: it if you want that first play to be. Fun
- 12:29Speaker 1: so that part is. Tricky SO i think a lot
- 12:35Speaker 1: about teachability is about how well do you know the?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Game how well can you explain what's happening in the,
- 12:41Speaker 1: game to other people something to think about.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Multiple or singular.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Artists, well there is a poor grammar the use of
- 12:53Speaker 1: the word singular. THERE i don't think that's what they,
- 12:56Speaker 1: meant because singular means standing out as especially. Specific so
- 13:07Speaker 1: you would Say Wes anderson is a singular. Director he
- 13:11Speaker 1: directs in a way that is kind of different from
- 13:14Speaker 1: most other. People whereas if you just mean one, artist
- 13:17Speaker 1: you mean a single, artist not singular, anyway multiple or singular,
- 13:23Speaker 1: artist it depends how much art you have to, do
- 13:25Speaker 1: how reliable those artists, are and how much you want to.
- 13:29Speaker 1: PAY i think all three of those things go. Together
- 13:31Speaker 1: think if you're probably using one, artist you probably get
- 13:35Speaker 1: a discount on.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Each individual.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Piece if you're producing more and more pieces because it's
- 13:40Speaker 1: steady work for them for a long. Time but depending
- 13:43Speaker 1: how quick they, are that could be a very slow
- 13:46Speaker 1: process to wait for all that. Art but you also
- 13:49Speaker 1: can be sure of a very solid look to your
- 13:53Speaker 1: game if you're using one. Artist if you're using multiple,
- 13:55Speaker 1: artists they think you need a very strong art director
- 13:59Speaker 1: who can give those artis feedback to make the art look.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Coherent you look At, wingspan they use a bunch of
- 14:04Speaker 1: different artists for those, birds and they all look pretty
- 14:08Speaker 1: consistent in. Style there are other games where they just
- 14:12Speaker 1: don't care about looking consistent. Style magic The, gathering for,
- 14:15Speaker 1: example has a huge variety of kinds of art because
- 14:20Speaker 1: they employ a bunch of different artists and part of
- 14:22Speaker 1: their thing is like different.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Art let's. See, oh hello.
- 14:28Speaker 1: NEWCOMERS i actually commented on this thread. Early this person is,
- 14:31Speaker 1: like hello, newcomers welcome to, Board. Gambik please respond to
- 14:35Speaker 1: all trade requests that you, get even if you don't
- 14:39Speaker 1: want to do the.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Trade thank.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You and one that's not a very welcoming way to welcome. People,
- 14:47Speaker 1: hey glad you're. Here don't contribute to a known. Problem
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's not the ideal first thing you say to.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Somebody new in a.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Community but more, IMPORTANTLY i think LIKE i feel like
- 14:58Speaker 1: you don't owe anyone your time if you haven't engaged
- 15:01Speaker 1: them in a, Conversation LIKE i don't feel like if
- 15:04Speaker 1: someone comes to my door to sell, SOMETHING i don't
- 15:06Speaker 1: feel LIKE i owe them anytime at. All i'll open
- 15:08Speaker 1: the door And i'll point to my nose soliciting. Sign
- 15:10Speaker 1: i'm say, Sorry i'm not. Interested but if you have,
- 15:13Speaker 1: ENGAGED i would say you do owe someone in your
- 15:16Speaker 1: time as part of being a good community. Member so
- 15:18Speaker 1: if you have a game in your, collection if you
- 15:20Speaker 1: marked it for, trade and then you see and someone
- 15:23Speaker 1: offers you a, trade THEN i think you are obligated to.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Respond but if you haven't marked a game, trade if
- 15:29Speaker 1: someone just randomly sends you a trade, REQUEST i don't
- 15:32Speaker 1: think you're obligated to. Respond that's. Spam you haven't participated
- 15:36Speaker 1: in the trading. CONVERSATION i HONESTLY i still would. RESPOND
- 15:41Speaker 1: i would say, No i'm not interested to thank, You
- 15:44Speaker 1: BUT i guess it depends how MANY i. GOT i
- 15:46Speaker 1: don't get that. Many let's see how to choose the
- 15:51Speaker 1: best board? Game what you do is you go to
- 15:55Speaker 1: either an online venue or used, venue or you go
- 15:58Speaker 1: to a friend and you, say, hey do you have
- 16:00Speaker 1: Any Android netrunner? STUFF i would like to play the best.
- 16:04Speaker 1: GAME i guess that depends on how picky you are
- 16:07Speaker 1: about the word board.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Game if you just want the best board, game you
- 16:10Speaker 2: pick up a copy Of Brass.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Birmingham it's easy family game day teacher looking for new.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Games if you're teaching a family game, DAY i highly
- 16:20Speaker 1: Recommend Las. Vegas the theme maybe isn't ideal depending on
- 16:25Speaker 1: how conservative your family. Is But Las vegas is an excellent.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Game it's easy to, teach easy to. Play it plays.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Six you could also add components to make a play
- 16:35Speaker 1: up to eight without much. Trouble it's, fun it's, silly
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's not too. Long i'd also Recommend Happy salmon if
- 16:43Speaker 1: you have mobile active people in your. Group it's a fun,
- 16:46Speaker 1: game although it's very, short so depending how long you
- 16:49Speaker 1: want your family game day to, Go Happy salmon's maybe too.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Short flip seven is very, popular AND i can see
- 16:56Speaker 1: why people like. IT i have cooled on it Because
- 17:00Speaker 1: i've sort of come to realize there are times you
- 17:03Speaker 1: play Fifth flip seven and it's just bad because you
- 17:06Speaker 1: get bad. Luck so that's not, ideal but generally.
- 17:12Speaker 3: No.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Problem software to create character cards for a miniatures. Game
- 17:19Speaker 1: don't even know what that. Means character cards for a miniatures.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Game so you have a miniature game and then you
- 17:24Speaker 1: have like little cards that you. GET i don't know
- 17:26Speaker 1: why that would be software any different than any other.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Game that you would.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Use Nan deck is the free solution that a lot
- 17:33Speaker 1: of people. USE i Use Adobe. ILLUSTRATOR i would not
- 17:36Speaker 1: probably Use Adobe. Illustrator IF i did not get The
- 17:38Speaker 1: Adobe Creative suite free through my. WORK i like, it
- 17:42Speaker 1: BUT i don't like it enough to pay thirty bucks
- 17:44Speaker 1: a month or whatever they charge for.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It so.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Requesting ten gg to start a guild for a local gaming, group, okay?
- 17:55Speaker 1: LAME i declare. Lame if you go on board Game
- 17:58Speaker 1: gig and you look up what do you have to
- 17:59Speaker 1: do to get geek? Gold it is not hard to
- 18:04Speaker 1: get geek. Gold you can participate on Board Game geek
- 18:08Speaker 1: for just a little bit of time and you can
- 18:11Speaker 1: earn ten geek.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Gold that's.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Nothing you could also contribute To Board Game geek each.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Year if you, contribute you get like a whole bunch
- 18:20Speaker 1: Of geek. GOLD i guess requesting geek gold is one
- 18:25Speaker 1: way to do. It probably they've already got. It IF
- 18:28Speaker 1: i were in a different, MOOD i would probably just
- 18:30Speaker 1: give them the geek.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Gold but.
- 18:34Speaker 1: There are so many things you can do on the
- 18:36Speaker 1: site that will earn you geek gold THAT i feel
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's a little silly to go asking for geek.
