- 0:00This is the Sacramento Brief, your weekday roundup
- 0:09of overnight headlines and what's ahead across
- 0:12the city. I'm Carol. It's Wednesday, October
- 0:1621st, 2026. Let's get you caught up. A Sacramento
- 0:21County jury has convicted an Elk Grove man of
- 0:24murdering both of his parents for financial gain.
- 0:26Mark Andre Tomas Navarrete was found guilty Friday
- 0:29of two counts of first -degree murder. Jurors
- 0:32also found true allegations of multiple murders
- 0:34and that the killings were committed for financial
- 0:37gain. Prosecutors say that in June of 2024, Navarrete
- 0:41drove from his Elk Grove home to his parents'
- 0:43neighborhood, parked several blocks away, then
- 0:46put on a mask and gloves and rode a kick scooter
- 0:49to their home. Investigators say he avoided the
- 0:53front door ring camera by entering through the
- 0:55side gate. Once inside, prosecutors say he killed
- 0:58both of his parents in the garage, then left
- 1:01in their vehicle before eventually returning
- 1:05in his own car. Later that morning, Navarrete
- 1:08texted his deceased parents asking if they wanted
- 1:11to come over for dinner. After his sister became
- 1:14concerned when she didn't reach them, Navarrete
- 1:18later went to the home with his children and
- 1:20appeared to discover their bodies. Detectives
- 1:23eventually found the scooter in his garage and
- 1:25DNA testing revealed Navarrete's DNA under his
- 1:28mother's fingernails. Prosecutors also said Navarette
- 1:33had been running fake investment schemes involving
- 1:36friends and relatives and stood to inherit half
- 1:39of his parents' estate. Elk Grove police and
- 1:42used the flock and other traffic cameras to help
- 1:46trace his movements. Navarete faces life in
- 1:50prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing
- 1:53is scheduled for November 13th. Meanwhile, a
- 1:57repeat. DUI offender has been convicted of second
- 2:01degree murder in a deadly Sacramento County crash.
- 2:03Richard Newman was convicted in the death of
- 2:06Nathan Thomas. Prosecutors say Newman ran a red
- 2:10light at 55 miles per hour in August of last
- 2:13year, striking Thomas's vehicle. Thomas suffered
- 2:16a traumatic brain injury and multiple facial
- 2:19fractures and died weeks later. Investigators
- 2:22determined Newman's blood alcohol level was a
- 2:25.21. Newman also had previous DUI convictions
- 2:31and had received what was known for the Watson
- 2:35advisement, a warning that driving under the
- 2:38influence can result in murder charges if someone
- 2:41is killed. Newman faces 15 years to life in prison.
- 2:46Sentencing is scheduled for November 20th. For

- 3:36Sacramento County elections officials are responding
- 3:38after the U .S. Department of Justice announced
- 3:41that two count... Two county residents have been
- 3:45charged with voting by an alien in the federal
- 3:48election. The county emphasizes that the charges
- 3:51are allegations and the defendants are presumed
- 3:54innocent unless proven guilty. Voters registration
- 3:57and elections says it has flagged the voter information
- 4:02connected to the two individuals and will determine
- 4:05any further action based on the federal cases
- 4:07and guidance from the California Secretary of
- 4:10State. County officials say California voters
