- 0:03Our gentle morning melodies have attracted wander and admirers.
- 0:07Hey, who are you guys? We Am is R&B, they whom as are
- 0:12known as the Electric Mayhem. Welcome to Habawa, a Muppet quiz
- 0:39show brought to you by toughpigs.com.
- 0:42It's your favorite quiz show that's not like the others here.
- 0:46Muppet fans, Muppet professionals and everyone in
- 0:50between competes for fabulous prizes and to see who's this
- 0:55week's. Toughest pig.
- 0:57I'm your host Becca Petunia of toughpigs.com, and today we're
- 1:02talking about the best of the best The Electric Mayhem.
- 1:06That's right, the Mayhem Muppets.
- 1:08So talented they can star in an entire show where Kermit never
- 1:12even shows up. I've always loved the mayhem,
- 1:16and certainly having a ton of new material this year made it
- 1:19easier than ever to write an episode all about them.
- 1:23And maybe someone at Disney will hear this podcast and decide to
- 1:26renew Muppets Mayhem for Season 2.
- 1:29And while they're listening, here's my suggestion.
- 1:32Add Zandra and Ubu as villains to Season 2.
- 1:36I can explain. I won't explain right now, but I
- 1:40can explain. It's a brilliant idea, and it'll
- 1:42it'll save it. It'll make the show even better.
- 1:46Anyway, today's mellow and Profitable episode features
- 1:49questions written by me. With help from Muppet Wiki plus
- 1:53some sources I'll mention later. And Speaking of let's agree to
- 1:57play fair today. Please don't look at Muppet Wiki
- 2:01or any other resource during this game.
- 2:04I'm trusting you to be honest. Like Janice, I will start
- 2:08sneezing if anyone lies about their Muppet knowledge.
- 2:12Anyway, before we can jam with the band, let's learn about
- 2:15today's guest musicians. That's why we're going to play
- 2:19our first game. To tell a face, contestants,
- 2:24buzz in to answer some questions about yourself.
- 2:27Whoever buzzes in first will get introduced first.
- 2:31Ready. Go.
- 2:33All right. So our first contestant, Dave,
- 2:38what is your name? My name is Dave Holteen Junior.
- 2:44Very nice. Dave Holteen Junior and.
- 2:47This season I've started doing this because it's the right
- 2:49thing to do, and it's about time that I started doing this.
- 2:52What pronouns should we use for you during this recording?
- 2:55He him. Please.
- 2:56OK. All right.
- 2:58So Dave, why don't you tell us a little bit about your history
- 3:02with The Muppets and some of the work you've done with The
- 3:05Muppets as well, because you've you've been fortunate enough to
- 3:08do some stuff with them, correct?
- 3:11Yeah, so like, pretty much everybody else.
- 3:16I started as a young kid and I watched The Muppets.
- 3:20I watched Sesame Street with my dad, The Muppet Show with my
- 3:23dad, and of course Travel Rock. It was just me and him, and I
- 3:29was a fan. Years later, when the Internet
- 3:33suddenly appeared, I was like, ooh, I should see what they have
- 3:36on The Muppets. And I was surprised to find
- 3:39there were a lot of other fans, which at first was devastating
- 3:42and then very quickly became exciting.
- 3:46And it made the world a smaller place for me as well as friends.
- 3:51And as a result, I, I, I all I could do when I was a kid was
- 3:58draw. That's the only thing I was
- 3:59allowed to do when I got in trouble.
- 4:02So the thing that I do the most were The Muppets.
- 4:05And as I got online more and more, that world continued to
- 4:12shrink. I was on the outer edge and then
- 4:14slowly managed to work my way in and the first I guess Muppet gig
- 4:21job I got was doing artwork for the performers and some
- 4:29production crew for the 2015 Muppets Show and that was
- 4:34really, really cool. I got to go to the studio and
- 4:36then not long after that. Craig Shemmon hired me to work
- 4:41on his book Sam and Friends, the story of Jim Henson's first
- 4:46television show available on Fair Man or Media.
- 4:50You should go check it out. Yeah, well, Craig will be happy
- 4:55about that too. And and and basically, whenever
- 5:00Joe says, hey, I need you to Draw Something for a podcast, I
- 5:04say I'll do my best. Well.
- 5:07I I love all the stuff that you've done.
- 5:10Love your work on that, that Sam and Friends book and all the
- 5:14bonus material that you have. I have the friend of Sam's
- 5:18sticker on my computer and all that but.
- 5:23You know, I don't even think I have that anymore.
- 5:24Actually, I think I gave them all away.
- 5:28Yes, you're not. You're not friends with Sam.
- 5:31No, not anymore. And.
- 5:34Thanks, Dave. And Dave, who is your favorite
- 5:37member of the Electric Mayhem? My favorite member as a member
- 5:44is Doctor Teeth, but my favorite member to draw will always be
- 5:48Animal. Animal is so much fun to draw,
- 5:51just there's so much energy in any picture of animal.
- 5:54And it's easy. It's it's just basically a
- 5:56feather duster with eyes and teeth.
- 5:58You know, I'm just, I'm waving my arm frantically because
- 6:01that's how I would draw animal. That's how Animal would draw.
- 6:05Animal too, probably. So Dave, you've earned yourself
- 6:1020 points for all of those correct answers.
- 6:13Those will be the only 20 points I get.
- 6:15I'm afraid, no. I don't think so.
- 6:18Let's move on to our second contestant.
- 6:21Our second contestant. What is your name?
- 6:24My name is Joe Henis. My pronouns are he, him, and I
- 6:28like to eat drums. Look at you scooping my question
- 6:32with with knowing that I'm going to ask you about pronouns.
- 6:35Look at that. How did you know?
- 6:37I I thought I would be more efficient and then you know now
- 6:41we're talking about it and that undoes all the efficient.
- 6:44Yeah, now it's not efficient anymore.
- 6:45But anyway, Joe, everybody knows your history with The Muppets.
- 6:50You are one of the coowners of the website toughpigs.com,
- 6:56which. You should check out.
- 6:58If you haven't, those of you listening and I thought you're
- 7:02talking to me, I'll check it out.
- 7:03Yeah, I'll give it. I'll give it a go.
- 7:05Joe, have you seen it? I have not in years.
- 7:08Yeah, I kind of gave up on it a long time ago.
- 7:11No, that's not true. Let me tell you, it's kind of
- 7:13gone downhill since new people took over in like 2007 or so.
- 7:19I don't. I don't care for their
- 7:21leadership. I mean, the truth is is
- 7:23actually, I think I agree with you.
- 7:27No, no. You guys do wonderful work.
- 7:30Well, thank you. And I've been here for nine of
- 7:32those years, so you know, but you do great work with that.
- 7:37You've been on so many Muppet podcasts, so I don't have to ask
- 7:40you your history with The Muppets.
- 7:42So instead, I'm going to ask you, hey, can you get behind it?
- 7:49Sure can, but I wish I had a really funny answer at hand.
- 7:54Instead of just quoting A Muppet thing.
- 7:56But can I get behind it? Yeah, because I don't know if
- 8:01you know this about me. I'm a really big fan of conga
- 8:04lines. Yeah, I love a good conga line.
- 8:07And the whole purpose of a conga line is to get behind it.
- 8:10You must have loved The Muppets. Go Hollywood.
- 8:14I did. Oh my God.
- 8:16That was is that the only time The Muppets have done a real
- 8:18conga line? Cuz that's a That's a good conga
- 8:21line. No, they they must have during
- 8:22one of like the Hawaiian sketches that they did on the
- 8:25Muppet Show, like Hawaiian War. We have to do some
- 8:28investigation. We'll have to get the The Muppet
- 8:30Wiki guys to start an article on conga lines.
- 8:34Shane, can you get, can you get working on that right away,
- 8:36please? Thank you very much.
- 8:38And Joe? Who is your favorite member of
- 8:41the Electric Mayhem? You know, I think, I think that
- 8:45no one's ever gonna beat Floyd. In my book, Floyd is the coolest
- 8:49guy you'll ever meet. I like both of the main
- 8:54performers of Floyd very much. Jerry Nelson obviously was was
- 8:57the king, and I think Matt Vogel does an incredible job with
- 9:01Floyd. Now he he retained the coolness,
- 9:05but I got to say, watching Muppets Mayhem, I have a
- 9:11newfound appreciation for zoot. That not that I never I never
- 9:15like not appreciated zoot. But like now every time he opens
- 9:19his mouth may honestly funny. I do love me some zoot.
- 9:23You should do a podcast about it, Joe, About that.
- 9:25Yeah, that's a good idea. Oh, how could I forget to
- 9:28mention the podcast you did on Muppets Mayhem?
- 9:32I did? Yeah.
- 9:34You want to tell us a little bit about Muppets Mayhem Backstage
- 9:38Pass? Yeah, I I did a podcast called
- 9:40Muppets Mayhem Backstage Pass and basically I wanted to do a
- 9:46watch along podcast for the new show.
- 9:49I worked with the folks in Muppet Studio at Disney to help,
- 9:54you know, approve assets and to get interviews.
- 9:57We ended up getting every single person that we asked for for
- 10:00interviews, which is amazing. That includes the entire main
- 10:03cast. And we had two of the producers,
- 10:07Jeff Yorks and Bill Beretta, who volunteered to be in every
- 10:11episode to give us all of like the Easter eggs and details and
- 10:14stuff, which was incredible. That was not something I asked
- 10:16for. They just said if you want it,
- 10:18we're here. And I was like, I'm going to say
- 10:20no to Bill Beretta, of course, come and play with us.
- 10:24It was super fun. It was a great experience for
- 10:28me, but also just such a great resource to have out in the
- 10:32world to be able to really dig deep into these episodes,
- 10:35because if we don't do it, who will?
- 10:38And the cover art was provided by our very own Dave Falteen
- 10:43Junior, who's right here with us.
- 10:45Oh, you know, I was just about to ask you.
- 10:46I was just about to ask you like, who was that?
- 10:49Who was the talentless hack? Who, who did that cover art?
- 10:52But I guess now, I guess now I know.
- 10:54I was just saying you're not, you're not wrong.
- 10:56Because once Joe said, oh, we have permission to use The
- 10:59Muppets Mayhem logo and and and Disney branding, I was like,
- 11:03well, I'm pretty much done. No, you did such a great job.
- 11:06I'm joking. I love.
- 11:07Well, that's the thing. I went to Dave because first
- 11:11because #1 Dave's my guy. Love you, Dave.
- 11:14But I thought whatever we do like Dave is going to illustrate
- 11:19something that's really incredible.
- 11:20And then once we said okay, we've got the logo, we got
- 11:23permission to use the logo. And as Dave says, most of the
- 11:27work is done, he didn't just stop that.
- 11:29You easily could have just like thrown a the words backstage
- 11:31pass over that logo and being done with it and I would have
- 11:33been fine. But you actually printed out.
- 11:37But you printed out like a real badge, like a like a backstage
- 11:41pass that you would wear on a lanyard around your neck.
- 11:43And you took it on a photo shoot.
- 11:46And like you created all this amazing imagery that went so far
- 11:49above and beyond what we would have asked you to do.
- 11:52And you know, proving that like, you're not just an amazing
- 11:55illustrator, but you're a terrific graphic designer and
- 11:59you've got such an amazing eye for detail and for what makes a
- 12:03project like this really special and unique.
- 12:06And muppet Y. And you know that's that's why.
- 12:09That's why you're my guy. Ah.
- 12:10Thank you. You have 20 minutes to keep
- 12:12going and gushing about it. Thank you.
- 12:15Well. Hey, I'm gonna cut you off, but.
- 12:19You won't be able to spend 20 more minutes on this, but
- 12:21Speaking of 20, I will give you 20 points for those correct
- 12:25answers to Cheng Hoorang. Now, thank you both and let's
- 12:33modulate into our next game, which I'm calling.
- 12:37Moog's Mayhead Challenge. You brought that magic as
- 12:41always. Well, if it isn't our most loyal
- 12:43#1 mayhead, My man moved. You know, you guys added those
- 12:49extra 6 amps. I thought it would be overkill,
- 12:51but you sounded better than ever.
- 12:52It was so good. Am I yelling?
- 12:54I'm yelling, aren't I? Yes, you are.
- 12:56And you are most welcome. Welcome.
- 12:59If you want to be a true mayhead like Moog, you've got to know
- 13:04all about the six members of the Electric Mayhem.
- 13:07So this game is about Doctor Teeth, Floyd, Pepper, Janice,
- 13:12Zoo animal, and lips. I'll ask you a question about
- 13:16one of the members of the Electric Mayhem.
- 13:19You'll buzz in and answer it. It's pretty simple.
- 13:23We will do 2 questions for each member of the band, so 12
- 13:28questions total. Each of these questions will be
- 13:31worth 2 points. Buzz in when you know the
- 13:34answer, but Please wait until I finish reading the question.
- 13:38So may heads all over the Internet can play along.
- 13:42Ready. Ready.
- 13:43All right, so first we're going to do 2 questions about Zoot.
- 13:47So our Zoot question number one on Muppets Mayhem, it's revealed
- 13:52that this is Zoot's last name, Joe.
- 14:00Zootowski. It is Zootowski.
- 14:05Nice. Great.
- 14:07And our second Zoot question, Dave.
- 14:10Goals devised Zoot's Shoe Jimmy as a tribute to this performer.
- 14:21Dave. I'm I'm going out on a limb
- 14:23here. Is it Jimi Hendrix?
- 14:25It is not Jimi Hendrix. Good guess.
- 14:28Show Do you know the secret truth of Jimmy Hsu?
- 14:32The Secret Truth, which he declined to reveal on our
- 14:35podcast. Which is so weird because Bill
- 14:37Beretta revealed it on another podcast right on his podcast.
- 14:41Apparently he wasn't supposed to.
- 14:44That's what that's what we learned that day.
- 14:46But the answer to your question is Jim Henson.
- 14:49It is Jim Henson. Should I rewrite that question?
- 14:52Should we not be talking about it?
- 14:54It's like on Muppet Wiki because Bill Beretta said it.
- 14:58It's public information. That's up to Dave if he really
- 15:01wants to go into detail himself. But too late.
- 15:04Bill spilled the beans. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:06That was Jimmy Choo. This is on Muppet wiki.
- 15:09I looked it up. Yeah, yes.
- 15:12And I listened to Muppets Mayhem backstage pass, and I remember
- 15:17passing on that. So I was like, maybe it's Jimi
- 15:19Hendrix. Yep, he he didn't want to talk
- 15:22about it on the episode, but Bill Beretta talked about it on
- 15:25the Beretta Bros podcast and Muppet Wiki cited that on their
- 15:29Jimmy Shoe page. All right, it is Jim Henson.
- 15:34OK, our next two questions are going to be about Floyd.
- 15:37Hey, so Floyd, Question 1. Floyd only performed music on
- 15:41one episode of Muppets Tonight, where he accompanied Garth
- 15:46Brooks. What instrument did he play in
- 15:49that episode, Joe, I I genuinely do not know the answer, but I
- 15:58figure it couldn't hurt to just say he played the marimba.
- 16:06He did not play the marimba. Good guess, Dave.
- 16:09For two points. Guess an instrument.
- 16:12Let's say the kazoo. Wasn't the kazoo.
- 16:14He played the violin. He played the violin in the
- 16:18Fiddler on the Roof style sketch that they did.
- 16:21That was one of Floyd's 2 appearances on Muppets Tonight.
- 16:25Jerry Nelson was alive and was working on Muppets Tonight, and
- 16:29yet that was one of Floyd's 2 appearances on the entire show.
- 16:35It was weird. Second Floyd Question Floyd is
- 16:39the only member of the Electric Mayhem to have performed at the
- 16:42Grammy Awards. Which musician did he sing with?
- 16:50Joe He sang with John Denver. It was John Denver.
- 16:55Can I can I get a bonus point for knowing what song they sang?
- 16:58Oh, well, please, yes. Tell me the song that they sang.
- 17:01I I don't need I don't actually need the bonus point.
- 17:04I just want to prove that I I remember they sang Gone Fishing
- 17:07from Rocky Mountain Holiday. Correct.
- 17:09Yes. Yeah.
- 17:11It's a great song. It is from a mediocre special.
- 17:15Yeah, I would venture to say a bad special, but I guess, yeah,
- 17:20I was being kind. I don't know.
- 17:21Any time The Muppets are on location, I can't hate the
- 17:25special. It just looks so good when
- 17:27they're out in the real world, even though half of those
- 17:29location shots are fake. Do you know that?
- 17:33I guess I haven't watched it in a long time.
- 17:34I haven't watched it since I was a child, so maybe I don't.
- 17:37They did a really good job at faking the the fake location,
- 17:41but apparently they filmed half of that special out on location
- 17:44and half of it in an airplane hangar.
- 17:49So think about that folks, next time you watch Rocky Mountain
- 17:51Holiday. Whatever that is.
- 17:54Maybe every week. Or don't watch it ever.
- 17:58That's also an option. All right.
- 18:00Two questions about animal. Our first animal question.
- 18:05According to a beloved quote from Frank Oz, you shouldn't
- 18:09mess with animal because he eats this Joe.
- 18:18He eats glass. It is glass.
- 18:20He eats glass. Man is the is the quote second
- 18:27animal question. In 1998, Animal was the mascot
- 18:32for which US Olympics team Come on.
- 18:36All three of us were alive for this one, Joe.
- 18:41Was it the snowboarding team? It was the snowboarding team,
- 18:45correct? They They stapled his feet to a
- 18:48snowboard and threw him down a mountain for some television
- 18:52appearance. Great.
- 18:56So glad that exists in the world.
- 19:00Hey, we got two questions about Janice.
- 19:03While many assume that Janice is named after Janis Joplin, that
- 19:08has never been officially confirmed.
- 19:11However, Michael Frith notes that her design is based off of
- 19:15which rock musician Joe Joe's on A roll.
- 19:23Joe, I only because I could see Dave thinking and going, I don't
- 19:28know this or else I I give you an extra few seconds to to chime
- 19:33in. I think it's Mick Jagger, right?
- 19:35It is Mick Jagger. She was actually originally
- 19:38conceived as an androgynous male character and was going to have
- 19:43a pronounced Adam's apple that bobbed up and down.
- 19:48They were going to make a mechanism to move the Adam's
- 19:51apple. That's wild.
- 19:54Question 2 about Janice Richard Hunt is Janice's most famous
- 19:58performer. However, on season one of The
- 20:01Muppet Show, she was performed by Aaron Oscar, who performed
- 20:05Janice. Before that, in her first
- 20:08appearance on The Muppet Show sex and violence, it was neither
- 20:13Richard Hunt nor Aaron Oscar Joe.
- 20:20Was it Fran Brill? It was Fran Brill.
- 20:24Fran Brill is technically the original Janus performer.
- 20:28We got two questions about lips. First lips question lips.
- 20:32First line of dialogue since the Great Muppet Caper was in
- 20:36episode two of The Muppets 2015 sitcom, where he mentions that
- 20:42the band loves getting this kind of food from gas stations.
- 20:51Dave. Is it Sushi?
- 20:53It is sushi. It is.
- 20:55And we love Gas Station Sushi was Lips's first line of
- 20:59dialogue in over 30 years. Nice.
- 21:05I'm on the board. That's all I wanted.
- 21:09Our 10th question, our second lips question.
- 21:11Unfortunately, this is a little easier than it was when I wrote
- 21:15this question because, well, you'll find out why in a second.
- 21:20On Muppets, Mayhem Lips has a shirt featuring this other
- 21:24Muppet performed by Peter Linz. Dave.
- 21:32Tutter. It is Tutter, and it's a little
- 21:34easier now because I wrote this question months ago and then I
- 21:37decided to make a replica of that shirt for us to sell on
- 21:41toughpigs.com. I saw that today on X.
- 21:45Yeah. Oh boy.
- 21:48And it's really cool. And I heard it on the Backstage
- 21:52Pass podcast as well. Yes, well, that was I I put it
- 21:55on here when it was discussed on Backstage pass like 5 weeks ago.
- 22:00How about that, that how about that double plug just now?
- 22:04Yeah, we got we plugged the T public, we plugged all the
- 22:06podcasts, like, wow, you know. We plugged everybody.
- 22:10Everybody should check out both those things.
- 22:11Yeah, we're not plugging in X. All right.
- 22:15And lastly, we have two questions about Doctor Teeth.
- 22:19So our first Doctor Teeth question, Technically speaking,
- 22:22Doctor Teeth's first television appearance was not in a pilot
- 22:26episode of The Muppet Show. What was Doctor Teeth's first TV
- 22:30appearance, Joe? Was it on The Tonight Show with
- 22:38Johnny Carson? It was The Tonight Show,
- 22:40correct? Jim Henson brought Doctor Teeth
- 22:43along on an appearance on The Tonight Show.
- 22:47I think it was the day before sex and violence aired.
- 22:50My favorite thing about that, that Tonight Show episode is
- 22:54that Jim Henson's like bringing out all these new characters.
- 22:57Like, we see Doctor Teeth, we see Fozzie Bear, we see the
- 22:59Swedish Chef. And like, the audience is silent
- 23:03because nowadays you bring the Swedish Chef out and everyone
- 23:05goes like, Oh my God, it's the Swedish Chef.
- 23:06And they clap and they laugh and whatever.
- 23:09And now it's the audience just like, OK, who is this guy?
- 23:12What are you going to do? And it's kind of it's it's like
- 23:15Uncanny valley ish. Like it doesn't seem right when
- 23:18you watch. Doesn't Johnny even say, like,
- 23:21why didn't you bring Kermit the Frog?
- 23:23Yeah, I think you're right. Yeah, I think Johnny.
- 23:25He loved Kermit, though. Yeah, Johnny.
- 23:28Like every time Kermit was on the show, Johnny would make a
- 23:31point to talk about how much he loves Kermit and doesn't like
- 23:35talking to Jim. He just wants Doctor Kermit.
- 23:39And our second and final Doctor Teeth question.
- 23:43While Muppets Mayhem reveals that Doctor Teeth was a dentist,
- 23:47the inside cover of the rock Music with The Muppets VHS tape
- 23:53claims that he has the name Doctor Teeth because he never
- 24:01Dave. Goes to the doctor.
- 24:04Not goes to the doctor, but you're thinking on the right
- 24:06right path. I think Joe finished Med school.
- 24:12No, Doctor. Teeth never got a cavity, and
- 24:16that's why they call him doctor teeth, according to rock music
- 24:20with The Muppets, the VHS compilation tape from the 80s.
- 24:27Wow, interesting. Is that how dentists became
- 24:33dentists? Is they just because I?
- 24:36I think I would like for them to have a little bit of schooling.
- 24:39I never broke a bone, so I guess that by that logic I could be
- 24:42like. I think.
- 24:43I think that this is. I think that this is assuming
- 24:45that's why they call him teeth and that isn't like his actual
- 24:49last name. But I don't know.
- 24:52So interesting that he's he's never had a cavity and yet we
- 24:55could see his gold tooth like he's lost an entire tooth.
- 24:58Yeah, that doesn't have to be from a cavity.
- 25:00Maybe on the boxing match, Well, still he does have, he does have
- 25:05good reach with TVA, good boxer, you know.
- 25:09Yeah, he's got those long hit the guy without getting hit.
- 25:11Yeah, exactly. All right, well, nice work, May
- 25:16heads, And now it's time for my favorite game.
- 25:19That's right, it's time for beat.
- 25:23The time, as Muppets Mayhem makes clear.
- 25:27The Electric Mayhem hadn't released an album until 2023.
- 25:32In fact, we usually associate the band with performing cover
- 25:37songs like Tenderly or Mr. Blue Sky.
- 25:41However, since their first appearance in The Muppet Show,
- 25:44Sex and Violence, The Electric Mayhem have performed a number
- 25:48of original songs. By my count, they have performed
- 25:5327 original songs. Between that first pilot and the
- 25:59date we are recording this episode.
- 26:02This includes all of the different ways that they have
- 26:05appeared in movies and TV and specials.
- 26:08All of those things starting with Dave.
- 26:12Name an original song by the Electric Mayhem.
- 26:17We will go back and forth between the two of you to see
- 26:21who can name more. If you can't remember one or you
- 26:24get the answer wrong, your opponent will have the chance to
- 26:27steal some notes and counting both instrumentals and songs
- 26:33with lyrics. If you don't remember the name,
- 26:36particularly of an instrumental, you can describe the song or the
- 26:40scene or something like that, right?
- 26:43Also, at least two of the members of the band need to have
- 26:47been performing for this to count as an Electric Mayhem
- 26:50song. What I'm not counting are
- 26:54original songs sung by other characters but accompanied by
- 26:58the mayhem. So, for instance, this really
- 27:02mostly only excludes Pictures in My Head from The Muppets 2011,
- 27:09because that's really a Kermit song that the Mayhem plays some
- 27:15instruments at the end of. There might be another it
- 27:18excludes, but I'm not counting it and I didn't write it down.
- 27:22So do we understand what we're looking for?
- 27:24Yes. Also, I just want to point out I
- 27:27wrote an article on Tough Pigs a few months ago about we were
- 27:32ranking all of the original Electric Mayhem songs before
- 27:35Muppets Mayhem came out. And I thought to myself, there's
- 27:38no way that Becca will ask about this because I wrote a whole
- 27:41article about it and I did not look back and remind myself of
- 27:45what all those songs were, which is a good thing for this, but.
- 27:49Here's The funny thing. I read that article when it came
- 27:51out. I forgot that that article was
- 27:54written when I wrote this up. And I went to Muppet Wiki list
- 27:59of Electric Mayhem songs and went through one at a time,
- 28:03crossing out all of the covers because they are not really
- 28:06separated on the way. Muppet Wiki organizes these
- 28:09things. And I think there might be some
- 28:12you missed. I will say yes, I I guarantee
- 28:15there's at least there's one that I can think of that I
- 28:18deliberately left out and we'll talk, we'll we'll cover that in
- 28:20a few minutes. Well, Dave name an original song
- 28:23by the Electric Mayhan. Let's start off with nightlife
- 28:28from What's That? The Great Muppet Caper.
- 28:29That is the Great Muppet Caper. How about a little traveling
- 28:32music? Very good, Joe.
- 28:37Can you picture that? Can you picture that correct?
- 28:40Can you? Can you?
- 28:42No, Dave. Original I'm tapped out.
- 28:50OK. Well, we'll we'll pass to Joe
- 28:52and we can we can come back to you see if you can think of 1.
- 28:55In the meantime, Joe can't take no for an answer.
- 29:00Can't take no for an answer because technically that's
- 29:02Doctor Teeth and Zoot. That's counts as two members.
- 29:07Dave, you want to try again? Original man.
- 29:12It can be an instrumental if you can like describe the scene or
- 29:16something like that or any of the new songs.
- 29:20Well, if it's any of the new songs.
- 29:21Right, I said. Up, I said.
- 29:22From from their first first appearance till now.
- 29:25So we are one. We are one, correct Back to
- 29:30jail. I don't know the title of it,
- 29:32but it's the song that they sang during Fozzie Wig's party at
- 29:36Muppet Christmas. Yeah, it's later.
- 29:38That's only play, I should say. It's labeled as Fozzie Wigs
- 29:40Party Waltz. I will count that, Dave.
- 29:45I'm trying to think of something obscure from like like Muppets
- 29:50Party Cruise. Sadly, only Kermit had an
- 29:55original song in Muppets Party Cruise.
- 29:57Yeah, yeah, I'm blanking. Again, new songs count, new
- 30:03songs count. Yes, still blanking.
- 30:06OK. I will, I will jump back to Joe.
- 30:09Joe They sing Oh, Sorry, played again.
- 30:14Another instrumental in Muppet Treasure Island with the
- 30:18Pirates. Yes, they're not really dancing.
- 30:22Muppet Wiki labels that as island party music.
- 30:26Yeah, I would not have known that title.
- 30:28I didn't expect you to get it. Appreciate that, Dave.
- 30:33Anything else? Should I just They wouldn't.
- 30:36They wouldn't be considered part of Cabin Fever, even though
- 30:40there's a couple people singing from that.
- 30:43No. You don't think any of the
- 30:45Mayhem members are actually even in that?
- 30:47We'll find out on season season five of Moving Right Along.
- 30:51I'm up at Movie Podcast, brought to you by toughpigs.com, but I
- 30:55don't think any of the Mayhem are actually in that scene.
- 30:57Maybe Animal is? No.
- 31:00I got nothing. OK, back to Joe.
- 31:02One of my favorites. No room for boring?
- 31:06No room for boring from the Toyota commercial, Joe, I guess.
- 31:12Keep, keep going, Dave if you think of 1, raise your hand,
- 31:18raise your hand. I'll, I'll just shut up.
- 31:22Well, let's see. In the new show, we've got rock
- 31:24on, correct? That's the theme, the theme song
- 31:28we've got from the from Muppets Most Wanted.
- 31:33They have the, the really long instrumental that's like it's
- 31:38like 10 hours of them playing. That's referred to as total
- 31:42mayhem on Muppet Wing. Total mayhem, right?
- 31:47Again, I didn't expect you to get the names.
- 31:51Let's see, I know I'm kind of We're missing a bunch from
- 31:53Muppets Mayhem. Are we counting The Muppets
- 31:56Mayhem end music? We Are, which was also the theme
- 32:00song that we used for Muppets Mayhem Backstage Bass.
- 32:03Correct plug. Dave, you got anything?
- 32:07I got nothing. I appreciate, I appreciate
- 32:11trying to give me the alley you, but I got nothing and for the
- 32:16sake of sportsmanship I will stop there as opposed to to
- 32:19wasting time with me thinking. As well, Okay, here's some other
- 32:24choices that you could have. You could have had the Sweet
- 32:28Tooth Jam from The Muppet Show. It's was on some of the albums.
- 32:32It's the one where animal just yells jam, jam, jam all the
- 32:35time. Love You to Death, which is one
- 32:39of the songs that they played on Sex and Violence.
- 32:43If I recall correctly, Floyd's Floyd's Muppet Show credits
- 32:49theme. Fugue for Frog, his replacement
- 32:54for the Muppet Show theme. Don't blame the Dynamite, my
- 32:58personal favorite mayhem song that's from the Muppet Show.
- 33:02I have to be honest, I thought that was a cover.
- 33:05Nope. That one's original.
- 33:08The Pittsburgh Polka from Muppets Take Manhattan
- 33:11Rock'n'roll in All Around the World.
- 33:13From The Muppets Take The Muppets at Walt Disney World Nap
- 33:20Time from Muppet Wizard of Oz, the theme, to Up Late with Miss
- 33:26Piggy and Their. Depressed song.
- 33:31Depressed version of the theme to Up Late with Miss Piggy that
- 33:36they play when Josh Groban takes over the show.
- 33:40Other songs from Muppets Mayhem. I would have counted going to
- 33:44get there. Gotta be the sound of us,
- 33:49Believe in us and on our way. And one that I genuinely didn't
- 33:55know existed. Where you at?
- 33:58From Muppet Fest, which was Dave Goals and Jerry Nelson messing
- 34:04around and riffing with the Floyd and Zoot puppets, that
- 34:09counts as a song according to Muppet Wiki.
- 34:12Wow, that's that's new to me as well.
- 34:14But we're going to move into another game, this one about the
- 34:20Mayhem's best original song. Can you picture that?
- 34:24We're going to play a new game that I'm calling.
- 34:27Picture this now Joe. This game is pretty similar to
- 34:31one that you played with me back in season one of Ha Ha.
- 34:36Specifically, I'm thinking of the time you were on our Muppet
- 34:40Movie episode and we played a song lyric game.
- 34:44In this game, I am going to say a lyric to Can you picture that?
- 34:49You'll buzz in and respond with whatever the next lyric is,
- 34:55however, to make this challenging.
- 34:57I've mixed up the order of the lyrics, so we're not going to go
- 35:02from the beginning of the song to the end of the song.
- 35:04I I threw them all over the place, right?
- 35:08Don't get confused. I based these questions off of
- 35:11the lyrics on genius.com, which seem accurate to me, a person
- 35:17who's heard this song a zillion times.
- 35:20But I do apologize if there's somehow an error.
- 35:22Each of these lyrics is going to be worth one point.
- 35:26Buzz in when I finish saying my lyric with what comes next, I am
- 35:32going to expect you to get the words basically as accurate as
- 35:36possible because these are quotes.
- 35:39All right, Question.
- 35:49One fact is there's nothing out there you can't do, Joe.
- 35:59Yeah, even Santa Claus believes in you.
- 36:03Correct. I like how we're just going to
- 36:04say this very matter of factly, I guess.
- 36:11Question two, Jelly Belly. Giggling Dancing and wiggling.
- 36:20Joe, honey, that's the way I am. Correct.
- 36:25That is the that is the way you are.
- 36:27But don't call me honey. I couldn't.
- 36:29I couldn't think of the sweet word before I I was like, ah,
- 36:35what is it? I'm going to mess it.
- 36:37Up, sweetie. That's the way I am, Cutie.
- 36:39That's the way I am. I can't remember baby cakes.
- 36:42That's the way I am. Question 3.
- 36:45Use it if you need it, Dave. Don't forget to feed it.
- 36:53Correct. Don't forget to feed it.
- 36:57Question 4. Now begins the change in mental.
- 37:01Rearrange it, Joe. Nothing's really where it's at.
- 37:11Nothing's really where it's at, correct.
- 37:14Wow. Done.
- 37:14I had a question mark over that. Really.
- 37:16I wasn't understood. There it's really question 5.
- 37:22Crazy as a rocket. Nothing in my pocket, Joe.
- 37:30I keep it at the rainbow's end. I keep it at the rainbow's end,
- 37:35correct. Question six.
- 37:39I never think of money. I think of milk and honey.
- 37:47Dave. Grinnan like a Cheshire cat.
- 37:50Correct Grinnan. Like a Cheshire cat.
- 37:53It's hard when you mix the order of the lyrics around.
- 37:58I I just keep want to say I just want a buzzing go, can you
- 38:00picture that? Maybe you'll be right
- 38:05eventually. Yeah.
- 38:08Question seven. Let me take your picture, Dave.
- 38:16Add it to the mixture. Add it to the mixture.
- 38:18Exactly Question 8. Now the Eiffel Towers holding up
- 38:22a flower Joe. I gave it to a Texas cat I.
- 38:31Gave it to a Texas cat, correct? Wow.
- 38:35That's. Did you know that he gave it to
- 38:37a Texas cat? Did you know that?
- 38:39I did. Question 9.
- 38:46Everybody's lover, everybody's brother Dave.
- 38:54Hooray for Donald Glover. You know what?
- 38:57Yes, they predicted that. Was he performing in movies?
- 39:03Donald Glover. Danny Glover?
- 39:05Cuz one of them? Yes.
- 39:06Yes, yes, yes. Well, that's why I was confused.
- 39:08No, Donald Glover wasn't born yet.
- 39:11Danny Glover was in movies by then.
- 39:14That explains my confusion. No, unfortunately, that's not
- 39:17right. Joe.
- 39:18Everybody's lover. Everybody's brother.
- 39:22I wanna be your lifetime friend. I wanna be your lifetime friend,
- 39:25correct. That's the first lyric I want to
- 39:28be Donald Glover's lifetime friend.
- 39:30It's probably fun. I'm genuinely saying that on
- 39:33this podcast. If anyone knows Donald Glover, I
- 39:36feel like feel like he and I would get along real well.
- 39:38Yeah, you both like Spiderman. Yeah, he was in the 2011 Muppets
- 39:43movie. Remember that.
- 39:44I forgot about that. He probably did, too.
- 39:52Question 10 All of us are winning, picking and a grinning.
- 40:00Jam, lordy, but I love to jam. It is Lordy, but I love to jam
- 40:07Lordy. Lordy.
- 40:08Janice is 40. When you when, when you're
- 40:11saying them, I can hear the voice that's saying them and
- 40:15then following them, but then they're just like and take it.
- 40:19Take it. It it part of what I like.
- 40:21When I was writing this, I was like, I have to scramble them
- 40:25because otherwise I think it's too easy to just keep going in
- 40:28your head with the song. Yeah, super smooth and easy
- 40:31without it, yeah. Question question 11 and the
- 40:36final one here. Beat down the walls and you got
- 40:40to get this next part right. What does Doctor Teeth say after
- 40:44he says beat down the walls? Joe, this is the hard one, you
- 40:54know, because it sounds like he says something, but the lyric is
- 40:56something else. It's beat down.
- 40:59The walls begin. Believe God, I want to see
- 41:06beheats. That's not a word.
- 41:10Then begat is the last one. What is that word?
- 41:12You got 3/4 of them right, Dave, Do you know the missing word
- 41:16there? No, I just know the cadence
- 41:18changes on this one and. This is the hard one the the
- 41:26sources that I can find and you can hear it so I think these
- 41:29sources are right are beat down. The walls begin.
- 41:32Believe. Behold, begat.
- 41:39You can't hear that. No, I it's it sounds like he
- 41:44kind of does like a behe. I think I did Jim Henson get it
- 41:49wrong? I see.
- 41:50Behold, in every lyric sheet we No, I'm sure you're.
- 41:54Right, I was going to say, you're right in the ones that
- 41:56I've looked up, that feels like the most accurate answer from
- 41:59what I've seen. Now listen, the lyrics on the
- 42:01Internet could be wrong. Bill Beretta.
- 42:04The Internet? No way.
- 42:07Bill Beretta, if you want to, if you want to want to tweet at us
- 42:10with the actual lyric is if you're telling me it is not,
- 42:13begin, believe, Behold, begat. I will happily, retroactively
- 42:19give both of these fine gentlemen one point.
- 42:23Let's let's ask Paul Williams. He might not know I.
- 42:27Doubt, he remembers. I don't know.
- 42:30Paul Williams has an amazing memory and you know, especially
- 42:33for for those Muppet songs. That's fair.
- 42:35That's fair. So he might.
- 42:37And as discussed in backstage past.
- 42:39Apparently he no longer even wrote picture that so.
- 42:42That's true. That's true, yeah.
- 42:44You have to listen to the podcast to know what we're
- 42:46talking about, yeah. Well, I think either way we can
- 42:50agree that now your car can't be recognized, so that's good.
- 42:56Now for our final regular game. It's another one of my all time
- 43:00favorites, Mystery Guest. We previously talked about
- 43:05various songs performed by the Electric Mayhem.
- 43:08However, they also frequently appeared as a backing band in
- 43:12Muppet productions, accompanying guest stars and Muppets.
- 43:18And of course, many of these guest musicians would also
- 43:21appear in other Muppet related productions over the years.
- 43:26I'm going to describe a musician's appearance in another
- 43:30Muppet production. You'll buzz in and name that
- 43:34musician. You will earn one point for
- 43:39doing so. Then you can name the song or
- 43:43songs that this artist performed with the Electric Mayhem.
- 43:48If you can name the song or songs, you'll get two points for
- 43:53each of them. So I'm going to name a time that
- 43:55a celebrity appeared with The Muppets.
- 43:58All of the celebrities that I'm naming have also performed with
- 44:02the Electric Mayhem at another point in their career.
- 44:06You know what? Let's make it fun.
- 44:07You get 2 points if you can name the celebrity and you will get
- 44:11three points for each song you can remember.
- 44:15Oh, thank God I wasn't losing by enough.
- 44:21Some of these are a little tricky, but I believe in you,
- 44:24just like the Electric Mayhem believes in us.
- 44:27Ready. Alright, question one.
- 44:31In an early episode of Sesame Street, this musician sang one
- 44:34of his hits while a little girl enthusiastically added lyrics
- 44:39about Dancing Joe All Simon it is.
- 44:48Paul Simon, Joe, What song did the Electric Mayhem accompany
- 44:54Paul Simon in performing Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover?
- 44:58Incorrect. They performed that without Paul
- 45:01Simon. Oh, you're right.
- 45:04That was just just the Electric Mayhem.
- 45:07Was it 50 Ways to Love Your Reliever?
- 45:10No, that's not right. Either, unfortunately.
- 45:12Sorry, Roland. Oh darn it.
- 45:14So I I don't know the song, but am I?
- 45:19Is it? Is it?
- 45:20Is it performed on The Muppets Beach Party soundtrack?
- 45:24No, Paul Simon is not on that album.
- 45:28But this is. This is the closing number of
- 45:31the Paul Simon episode of The Muppet Show.
- 45:34Dave, you want to guess the song?
- 45:36I I want to guess it, but I'm not going to get it, so no.
- 45:41Loves me like a rock. Question two one of the only
- 45:46celebrities to appear with The Muppets, the Fraggles and the
- 45:49Sesame Street Gang. He's had so many appearances,
- 45:52it's hard to choose just one, But he and his band did cover
- 45:56Fraggle Rock Rock for Back to the Rock Joe.
- 46:05It's Dave Grohl. It is Dave Grohl, Joe.
- 46:10What song has he played with at least one member of the Electric
- 46:14Mayhem? Oh, you know, I can picture him
- 46:19singing with animal on drums, but I off the top of my head I
- 46:24can't think what song they sing. Dave, do you remember The
- 46:27Muppets 2015 sitcom? Yeah, I can see him dressed up
- 46:31as animal and everything. That's a different one.
- 46:34That's a yeah. That's a one.
- 46:35That's when he was with The Muppets.
- 46:36That's, yeah. When he was Animal, was he Was
- 46:39it on the 2015 sitcom? It was.
- 46:41It was on the 2015 sitcom. I was just double checking.
- 46:44It doesn't help me identify the song, but I can picture that.
- 46:47Well, it was written. You gotta remember, it's a song
- 46:50that was written before 2015, so maybe that'll help you.
- 46:53A Dave Groll song from before. No, it was learn to fly.
- 46:59Well, from there is nothing left to lose.
- 47:01Remember, they play it over. It's actually one of the better
- 47:04parts of Muppets 2015. They play that intercut with
- 47:07scenes of Gonzo shooting himself out of the cannon for the brief
- 47:11moment of that show was not bad. Yeah, exactly.
- 47:14That's like one of the good, one of the good episodes.
- 47:18All right, well, you did guess that it was Dave girl question
- 47:21three. She played Kermit's Dr. in The
- 47:25Muppets Take Manhattan Joe. It was Linda Lavin.
- 47:35It was Linda Lavin. Joe, do you know what song the
- 47:38Electric Mayhem played with Linda Lavin?
- 47:41I literally just watched this two days ago too.
- 47:45Did you? Well you think while I'm
- 47:48thinking, cuz I can picture her, she's in the red sequined dress,
- 47:52She's got the band behind her. What are they singing?
- 47:56David Buchum is listening to this right now and he's
- 47:58screaming at his at his podcast app, but I do not know what it
- 48:04is. Dave, do you want to guess?
- 48:07I just like when I tell you I just watched it.
- 48:11I just watched it and as I think I'm proving repeatedly here, 0
- 48:16stuff is sticking. I am zoomed right now like.
- 48:21Dave, you have some points so don't you're you're you're
- 48:25you're you're getting some points.
- 48:26I got my name correct at the beginning, yeah.
- 48:28You did. Zoot can't always remember that
- 48:33he's Zoot Sax is your axe. I do not remember.
- 48:38It is, the more I see you. Even hearing, even hearing it,
- 48:42I'm like, yeah, that. I don't know.
- 48:45The old 90s dialup modem sound is playing in my head right now.
- 48:52All right, question four. He is the only Muppet Show guest
- 48:57star to also appear in Lady Gaga and The Muppets Holiday
- 49:01Spectacular. Dave is.
- 49:07It Tony Bennett. It is.
- 49:09Tony Bennett was not a Muppet Show guest star.
- 49:11Tony Bennett was a Muppets Tonight guest star.
- 49:14That is not correct. I'm sorry, even though Tony, the
- 49:17late Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, We're friends.
- 49:20But Joe, do you know who is the only Muppet Show guest star to
- 49:25also appear in Lady Gaga and The Muppets Holiday Spectacular?
- 49:28You don't watch this every year. I sure don't.
- 49:31Joe, what do you, you know, you were just saying that maybe we
- 49:34want to do a four week long holiday.
- 49:37The Holiday Podcast Maybe We do a four week holiday spectacular
- 49:43of Lady Gaga. The Muppets Holiday Spectacular.
- 49:46You're killing me Becca. Dave just had a look on his face
- 49:49as if he suddenly remembered it. So if Dave, if you remember,
- 49:53feel free to. Jump, Dave.
- 49:54Dave, do you want to try again? Was it Elton John?
- 49:57It was Elton John, correct. Because I remember watching it
- 50:00going like, so we're just not going to address the fact that
- 50:03everybody knows who's on The Muppet Show.
- 50:06No, they don't. They don't say it at all.
- 50:08Dave. Dave.
- 50:10So here's a chance for you to really pull ahead.
- 50:13The Mayhem performs 3 songs with Elton John on the Elton John
- 50:18episode of The Muppet Show. What are the three songs that
- 50:22the Mayhem accompanies with? I will give you 3 points for
- 50:26each song you name. You don't have to name all
- 50:28three. What a handicap.
- 50:31Anyone you get right, you will get three points.
- 50:35Crocodile Rock. That is 1.
- 50:37Hold on, let me just write down the points.
- 50:38OK? Crocodile Rock is 1.
- 50:40My absolute favorite Elton John song.
- 50:44Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. And that one was also featured
- 50:47on Muppets Mayhem, a clip of that episode.
- 50:51And the last one, I don't know. They all looked like they were
- 50:55dressed up like a stolen car. Both.
- 50:58To be fair, that mayhem always looks like like Doctor Teeth.
- 51:02Again, dresses like that to begin with.
- 51:05Joe, do you remember what the last song that they performed
- 51:08with Elton was? I believe it was don't go
- 51:11breaking my. It was that Elton's Elton John
- 51:15sang with Miss Piggy. But they're they're playing the
- 51:17instruments in the background. Eat your heart out, Kiki.
- 51:21Question 5 Kermit flirted with this musician both on The Muppet
- 51:25Show and on the album Kermit Unpigged Dave.
- 51:34Debbie Harry. It's not Debbie Harry.
- 51:36He did flirt with her on The Muppet Show, but Debbie Harry
- 51:40not on Kermit Unpigged. There's an episode about Kermit
- 51:43Unpigged that's up on our other tough pigs feed, where.
- 51:48Ryan Rowe, Anthony Strand and I talked way too much about every
- 51:53single moment on Kermit Unpigged.
- 51:56That'll be going up in four days or whatever.
- 52:01Joe Who is it? Was it Linda Ronstadt?
- 52:05Linda Ronstadt Yes, that's what Kermit says when he opens the
- 52:09door. And and then everyone applauds,
- 52:14even though they can't see what's going on backstage.
- 52:15Oh, there's no applause on on. Kerbin on Pig.
- 52:19You gotta listen to that out. They turn it on The Muppet Show
- 52:22episode. Yes.
- 52:23Yes. No.
- 52:23I'm Kerbin on Pig. There's no applause.
- 52:25No, no, no, no. What's not even from us at home?
- 52:30What song does Linda Rodstadt play with the Electric Mayhem on
- 52:35The Muppet Show? Is it?
- 52:37It's just one song that they're on.
- 52:39So it's technically like 1 1/2 if we count a song with one
- 52:44member of the Electric Mayhem, right?
- 52:48Cuz I I was thinking, well, I think, I think I know the half
- 52:53off the top of my head is it's in his kiss.
- 52:56It's in his kiss. Yes, that's just Janice and like
- 53:00some Doo Wop singer whatnots, right?
- 53:05So I wasn't gonna count that because.
- 53:07It's something about You'll be in my heart, right?
- 53:10Isn't it the finale song? I don't know off the top of my
- 53:13head. It's not called You'll be in my
- 53:15heart. I know that's one that lies from
- 53:17it or something. Is that.
- 53:19Hold on, Let Me Look. It's called oh, I gotta go
- 53:22through the whole song in my head.
- 53:26You're gonna find it before I remember it.
- 53:28When I grow too old to dream. That's what it's called.
- 53:31OK, it is not that song. And the song, the word the word
- 53:36heart never appears in this Linda Rothstadt song.
- 53:39It is, of course, blue by you. I didn't remember that The
- 53:43Muppets were. I mean, the mayhem was in that.
- 53:45I thought it was just frogs. Apparently I believe in it,
- 53:48according to Muppet Wiki. Great.
- 53:50I haven't watched that episode in a while.
- 53:52I reviewed it for the website Tough Pigs when we did our It's
- 53:56a terrific episode. Muppet Show, 40 years.
- 53:58Yeah. All right.
- 54:01Next question. In a season 16 episode of Sesame
- 54:05Street, Oscar tries to get this celebrity to play terrible music
- 54:09by giving him a broken trumpet, only to realize that he can make
- 54:14anything sound good. Dave it.
- 54:21Is a total guess, but going on the broken trumpet thing?
- 54:24Is it Dizzy Gillespie? It is Dizzy Gillespie, correct?
- 54:26I was hoping that someone would just be able to.
- 54:29Figure that out. Do you remember what song The
- 54:31Mayhem plays with Dizzy Gillespie?
- 54:33Is it Hello Dolly? It is not Hello Dolly.
- 54:36Good guess, Joe, do you remember?
- 54:40I remember the song. I remember he's wearing a weird
- 54:43like vest and no shirt underneath.
- 54:46OK, I, I, I, I can't give you credit for reminding us that
- 54:50this was filmed in the 70s. Although I guess animals sort of
- 54:55dresses the same way he does. Is it?
- 54:58Is it swing low sweet chariot? It is not.
- 55:01It is the St. Louis Blues.
- 55:04Can you check the Muppet Wiki? I want to say I'm not going to
- 55:08say this for points, but just to make sure I'm not a crazy
- 55:11person. I think the song segues into
- 55:14swing Low Sweet chariot. But I could be wrong.
- 55:17I could be remembering this. Completely correctly.
- 55:18You are right, you are right. It does segue into that in the
- 55:24closing number of episodes, 413. So the closing number is
- 55:30technically, wait, where is Saint Louis Blues anyway?
- 55:34Hold on. Oh yeah, so that's earlier in
- 55:36the show. And then, yes, and the mayhem
- 55:40are there. Good.
- 55:42You know what? I'm learning something even new
- 55:46today, but Saint Louis Blues also counts.
- 55:49But I will give you one point for swing lows.
- 55:52Swing low, sweet chariot that will cherish this point.
- 56:00I always had a problem, just I, I, I I don't know if we're going
- 56:03to have an opportunity to talk about it, but I know that
- 56:06Muppets are genuinely going to be left-handed because
- 56:09performers are right-handed. But as a trumpet player and
- 56:11knowing how they used the armature for lips, there's no
- 56:16reason he had to play. Trumpet backwards.
- 56:19And that is something that has bothered me my entire life.
- 56:23Do they do they make left-handed trumpets?
- 56:25Is that a thing, Dave? I'm sure they do, but I've known
- 56:30a couple left-handed trumpet players and they just play a
- 56:33regular trumpet. It's, you know, it's really just
- 56:37how your hand fits over it and how your right hand would hold
- 56:40it. But for the armature and and for
- 56:42the mechanisms that they built, no reason for lips to be
- 56:44left-handed trumpet player. No reason at all.
- 56:47Wow. Maybe.
- 56:50Maybe they made the trumpet prop in a mirror.
- 56:54Yeah, probably. All right, Question seven.
- 56:57He performed The Rainbow Connection with Paul Williams
- 57:00for Paul's CD DVD set. I'm going back there someday,
- 57:09Joe. This.
- 57:11It doesn't really count as a celebrity.
- 57:13I just know that he was on this album.
- 57:14Is it Gonzo? It is not Gonzo.
- 57:17This is an actual famous musician.
- 57:20Can I can make a second guess just because I know this person
- 57:22has sung the song many times? Is it Willie Nelson?
- 57:26It is Willie Nelson, Yes. Cuz Willie Nelson kind of almost
- 57:30had a hit with with that song. Sure, Yeah.
- 57:35So I guess I'll open up the floor here.
- 57:38Since neither of you got it when you initially buzzed in, so buzz
- 57:41in. If you know there are actually 2
- 57:44songs that Willie Nelson has performed with the Electric
- 57:46Mayhem, buzz in to name at least one of them Joe.
- 57:55Do they sing on the road again? They do.
- 57:57They do sing on the road again. Well, the other one, I don't
- 58:02think I will even be able to guess.
- 58:03Turn on the Blank. I'm Willie Nelson songs.
- 58:07Is is it a Willie Nelson song? I believe so.
- 58:10I didn't write that down, but I will check because I can cheat.
- 58:15The only other Willie Nelson song I can think of is Rainbow
- 58:17Connection. It is a Willie Nelson song.
- 58:20I thought I had it. I do not.
- 58:22It is Angel flying too close to the ground.
- 58:25They perform it in the credits tag of the episode generally
- 58:30inhospitable, which is the episode that Willie Nelson
- 58:33appears on. How did you not know that, Dave?
- 58:37Geez, Dave. You could have said that about
- 58:39literally every question. Question 8 Alongside her
- 58:46daughter Tracee Ellis Ross, she sang Picture A World on Sesame
- 58:51Street Joe Diana. Ross, that is Diana Ross.
- 59:03Diana Ross appeared on an early episode, early, early Ish, I
- 59:06mean. Sesame Street's been on for 54
- 59:08years, but appeared in in an earlier episode of Sesame Street
- 59:11and Tracee Ellis Ross appears as one of the kids in that episode
- 59:16because she was a very young child, so she's just one of the
- 59:19kids in the crowd singing with Diana Ross Joe.
- 59:24There are two songs that the Mayhem performs with Diana Ross.
- 59:27Can you name at least one of them?
- 59:30Well, I know on the Diana Ross episode, So they sing, reach out
- 59:33and touch somebody's hand. I don't know if mayhem's in that
- 59:37or not. The mayhem is not, at least not
- 59:40by my count. I will double check because I've
- 59:41been listen now I now I feel like I'm going to be wrong about
- 59:45everything. But no.
- 59:47I mean, Janice and Floyd are singing, but it's not.
- 59:50Yeah, that doesn't count. No, no.
- 59:52It's one of those, just like every puppet that we had on hand
- 59:56is around Diana Ross numbers. On hand?
- 1:00:00That's a puppet joke. That's true.
- 1:00:03Like, I wouldn't call that a Beauregard number either.
- 1:00:09I mean, I could picture, like, the way that she's singing the
- 1:00:12song, you know? Like, I could picture what she
- 1:00:15looks like on stage without, you know, really spending like a 10
- 1:00:20minutes of thinking time. I'm probably not gonna remember.
- 1:00:23Dave, any guesses? Is it last time I saw?
- 1:00:26Her. It is last time I well, last
- 1:00:28time I saw him. But.
- 1:00:29Last time I saw him. It's Okay.
- 1:00:33Yeah, they they they change it obviously and.
- 1:00:36That song and the ending of that song is just the way I don't
- 1:00:41know that Lips is playing it, but even the way the trump goes
- 1:00:44down, Da da da da da da da da da from a from a brass standpoint.
- 1:00:53Can you name the other one? Because there was actually
- 1:00:54another one that I would have counted.
- 1:00:56Oh. I can see it, but I can't hear
- 1:00:58it. Oh I'm sorry.
- 1:00:59It's not in the episode. It's it's not I had I had it
- 1:01:02written wrong here. God, I just keep making
- 1:01:05mistakes. I this is like is this my first
- 1:01:08time hosting A Hobo Wah? The Muppet Movie Podcast brought
- 1:01:11to you Wait, is this my first time hosting Hobo Wah, a Muppet
- 1:01:17Quiz product? Sounds like it.
- 1:01:22Don't don't quit my day job. I just keep making mistakes.
- 1:01:26Is this my first time hosting Hobowa?
- 1:01:29A Muppet Quiz Show podcast brought to you by toughpigs.com
- 1:01:32Look Becca. Everyone makes mistakes.
- 1:01:34Do do, do, do, do do do do do do.
- 1:01:39I had written down feelings, but that's Beaker singing lead in
- 1:01:43the Diana Ross episode, not Diana Ross.
- 1:01:49Maybe Diana Ross performed Beaker in that scene.
- 1:01:52We don't know. She didn't question question
- 1:01:59nine. He famously performed Larry of
- 1:02:03Larry and Phyllis in Season 2 of Sesame Street, or I guess also
- 1:02:08more famously, the Muppet Studios tour guide in The
- 1:02:11Muppets 2011 film. Joe knows this one.
- 1:02:19Joe, that is Oscar winner Alan Arkin.
- 1:02:23It is Oscar winner Alan Arkin. The late Alan Arkin.
- 1:02:27I knew that, but I didn't realize.
- 1:02:29Is he a musician? No, but he sang a song with the
- 1:02:32mayhem. Ah jeez Louise, I'm like, that's
- 1:02:35Alan Arkin. But he doesn't sing, does he?
- 1:02:38Now he does sang in that one Larry and Phyllis sketch.
- 1:02:41Remember that. No, I don't.
- 1:02:43He goes. He goes.
- 1:02:44Aroom. Beep Beep.
- 1:02:49Beep. Beep, he goes.
- 1:02:49That's, that's singing. That's singing, Phyllis.
- 1:02:52I guarantee that even our listeners to this podcast do not
- 1:03:00know what you're talking about. When it comes to Larry and
- 1:03:02Phyllis, Well, listen. Actually, don't listen to me.
- 1:03:06Just. Move on.
- 1:03:08Do you know what song he sang with with With the Mayhem?
- 1:03:12I don't. I'm not as familiar with this
- 1:03:13episode because this is a season five one, if I'm not mistaken,
- 1:03:17season four or five. It's one of those like it wasn't
- 1:03:19on DVD and therefore I saw it a couple of times, but I didn't
- 1:03:23see it over and over and over again.
- 1:03:25It is. It is Season 4, which is why I'm
- 1:03:28not familiar with it. Because I know, right?
- 1:03:31The DVD episodes in season five, which I had most of taped as a
- 1:03:35child, yeah. But it is the Pig shuffle.
- 1:03:40An original song written by Alan Arkin and performed by him and
- 1:03:44the Electric Mayhem about the life of a pig wallowing in the
- 1:03:49mud. Piggy gets angry about it and
- 1:03:52Karate chops Alan Arkin. You know, I was gonna guess The
- 1:03:56pigs Shuffle, an original song by Alan Arkin and the Electric
- 1:04:00Mayhem singing about a pig that gets caught in the mud and the
- 1:04:02Speedy gets mad at them and Karate chops him.
- 1:04:04But I thought no, that's a little too specific.
- 1:04:09All right. Next question.
- 1:04:11He once gave a Ted talk about how puppets like The Muppets
- 1:04:15were superior to CGI creations. This is kind of a trick
- 1:04:19question, Joe. If this is the trick, then I'm
- 1:04:24going to be very upset. Is it Kermit the Frog?
- 1:04:27It is not Kermit the Frog, but you're close in your trick.
- 1:04:31Yeah, I had a 5050 shot with this one.
- 1:04:33I'll let Dave run with it, knowing what I know about Ted
- 1:04:37talks. Would it be Steve?
- 1:04:40No, it's a it's it's scooter. The correct answer is Scooter.
- 1:04:46That was the 5050 shot. I mean they both gave Ted talks.
- 1:04:49I just can't remember. Yeah, I.
- 1:04:51Didn't know Scooter gave a Ted talk.
- 1:04:53You can. You can watch it.
- 1:04:56There's a full like head talk that he gave specifically about
- 1:05:01why puppets are better than than CGI.
- 1:05:06There are two songs that a scooter performed with the
- 1:05:09Electric Mayhem where Scooter sang lead on an Electric Mayhem
- 1:05:14song. I guess buzz in because there we
- 1:05:17go, Dave. Mr. Baseman.
- 1:05:20Mr. Baseman is one. I will give you 3 points for
- 1:05:23that, Dave. Can you name the other one?
- 1:05:29I was gonna say act naturally. But that's not Scooter.
- 1:05:31No, that's Ganza. No, I don't have it.
- 1:05:35Show you must know this one. You showed it at the Muppet
- 1:05:38Vault a bunch. I'm sure I did.
- 1:05:41It's Six String orchestra it. Is 6 string orchestra.
- 1:05:45Another great song. Yep.
- 1:05:50K Question 11 We're almost done with this round.
- 1:05:52Question 11 in season one of Sesame Street, this R&B singer
- 1:05:57became one of the show's earliest celebrity guests when
- 1:06:01he sang The Alphabet. According to the old school DVD
- 1:06:05box set, he initially refused to use cue cards, but then changed
- 1:06:10his mind when he realized he couldn't remember the order of
- 1:06:14the letters. Joe, that is Lou.
- 1:06:22Rawls, that is Lou Rawls. I I almost buzzed in and said
- 1:06:27Stevie Wonder, until you until you started talking about the
- 1:06:30cue card. Yeah.
- 1:06:30No, that doesn't make any sense. Yeah, he had Braille cue cards.
- 1:06:35He just had a very long arm. Joe, What song did Lou Rawls
- 1:06:39perform with the Electric Mayhem?
- 1:06:42Is it multiple songs? I feel like he did more than one
- 1:06:44in this episode. I'm only seeing one by my count.
- 1:06:49OK. That that helps that Narles
- 1:06:51o'donne a little bit. You think I'd know.
- 1:06:54I reviewed this episode for toughpigs.com and I also was on
- 1:07:01this episode of Muppetergy where we talked about this episode.
- 1:07:04So oh, I'm sorry. Oh my goodness, did I did I play
- 1:07:08on this episode or what? It's two songs.
- 1:07:12It is 2 songs. OK, all right.
- 1:07:15Well, I know he's saying that the title is coming to me,
- 1:07:18that's why I'm stalling. But it's the one that he's
- 1:07:20saying at the end of his talk spot with Kermit and the
- 1:07:25characters come out and he starts singing about birds.
- 1:07:28He does. And then it leads into title of
- 1:07:31song, which is coming right now out of my brain, through my
- 1:07:37mouth. I can't think of it.
- 1:07:40Can't think of it. He also does the He also does
- 1:07:45the closing number with Miss Piggy.
- 1:07:47Yeah, I I I mean, I could picture him singing a song that
- 1:07:52does not have the Electric Mayhem in it.
- 1:07:54He sings groovy people. I can't think of the other songs
- 1:07:58he sings on that episode though. Dave, any idea?
- 1:08:01Oh, I just got it. Go for it then.
- 1:08:04I do. Come late.
- 1:08:06Bye bye Blackbird. Bye Bye Blackbird is that song.
- 1:08:09That is not the closing number. That's the one from the top.
- 1:08:12Yeah, that's not the closing number.
- 1:08:13I can't, can't remember that one.
- 1:08:16That one is you're the one. And the last question in this
- 1:08:22round and one that I know I have the right number of answers to
- 1:08:28on The Muppets ABC sitcom Miss Piggy wore a mouse outfit
- 1:08:32inspired by something this musician wore to the 2013 MTV
- 1:08:37Music Awards. Dave.
- 1:08:44I'm going to say dead mouse. Not dead Mouse.
- 1:08:47Good guess, Joe. Lady Gaga.
- 1:08:51It is not Lady Gaga. It is, of course, Miley Cyrus.
- 1:08:55Let's do a buzz in again. What song did the Electric
- 1:08:58Mayhem perform with Miley Cyrus in the special studio DC Almost
- 1:09:02live. I quit.
- 1:09:06You can't quit. You're producing this, Dave.
- 1:09:13Dave chived in. Dave, do you know?
- 1:09:16I didn't see this, but I'd have to take a guess.
- 1:09:19It's got to be party in the USA. It is not, you'd think.
- 1:09:22Huh. Part of the USA, I feel like
- 1:09:24came after the special. I was going to say this might
- 1:09:26have been pre party in the USA. I can't believe you guys don't.
- 1:09:29First of all that you haven't rewatched this special every
- 1:09:31year and secondly that you don't know your early Miley Cyrus
- 1:09:36discography, like back when she was still Hannah Montana.
- 1:09:40You don't know that the song is obviously called GNO Girls Night
- 1:09:46Out Oh. I did not get out.
- 1:09:49Oh, sure, no, I knew. I knew it the whole time.
- 1:09:53That's the one where she doesn't want to play with the Electric
- 1:09:56Mayhem because she thinks that they are weird.
- 1:09:59And then Rizzo and Pepe convince her that they are superstars who
- 1:10:03have played with people such as Garth Brooks and Prince and
- 1:10:07Elton John. And you will note that only one
- 1:10:10of those is true. Because they did not play with
- 1:10:14Garth Brooks and Prince. Because only Floyd played with
- 1:10:18Garth Brooks and none of the Electric Mayhem appear in the
- 1:10:21Prince episode. Amazing.
- 1:10:23Anyway, so look, we can't, we can't, we can't get any worse
- 1:10:27than ending with a reference to Studio DC almost live.
- 1:10:30So you are correct, we're going to move into our Stump, the host
- 1:10:36game, the anything in the World Prize game.
- 1:10:40Now today I've been stumped a lot by things that I wrote down,
- 1:10:44so maybe stumping me isn't going to be so hard.
- 1:10:48But in this round, you guys will be able to ask me anything in
- 1:10:51the world about the electric mayhem.
- 1:10:53If you stump me, you'll earn 15 points.
- 1:10:57So let's start with Dave. You can ask me anything in the
- 1:11:01world. So I wanted to come up with
- 1:11:06something that was unique. So I wrote to all of our good
- 1:11:10friend Jamie Carroll and I said, hey, hook me up with the
- 1:11:14Palisades Electric Mayhem type question.
- 1:11:18And after he wrote a 32 page dissertation on exactly what
- 1:11:24that should be. We love you, Jamie.
- 1:11:29Never change. Absolutely.
- 1:11:31I got to get Jamie. I got to get Jamie on this show,
- 1:11:33that's for certain. I'll say every time I bust
- 1:11:35Jamie's chops it is followed with I made a documentary about
- 1:11:39how wonderful he is so I can get away with it.
- 1:11:44But Speaking of the Palisades Muppets toy line, which two
- 1:11:50Mayhem members received more than one version or variance?
- 1:11:56So. All of them.
- 1:11:58Not all of them, but name 2 Mayhem members that received
- 1:12:02more than one variant or version.
- 1:12:05I think I know this. So one of them is animal because
- 1:12:10there was a bunch. There was like the Palisades
- 1:12:12Collectors Club one. There was a giant animal that
- 1:12:16they made as well. Is the other doctor teeth.
- 1:12:22No, and I would have thought that too.
- 1:12:24But the answer is, according to Jamie Carroll, actually lips.
- 1:12:28That was my second guess, because I remember there were a
- 1:12:31couple of different Lips outfits for some reason.
- 1:12:34And I also knew that there were a couple of repaints of the Java
- 1:12:39that came with him because for some reason Lips was packaged
- 1:12:43with Java. I guess that's a trumpet song,
- 1:12:45right? So yeah, maybe Lips was playing
- 1:12:48Java this whole time back in, you know, on The Tonight Show or
- 1:12:51whatever, when they. Ed Sullivan show when they
- 1:12:54performed it, but no, that counts.
- 1:12:56So Dave, you have earned 15 points.
- 1:12:59Joe, do you have a question for me?
- 1:13:02Sure do. I'm so tempted to give you a
- 1:13:06question that would be actually impossible for you to to know
- 1:13:09off the top of your head, But I'm going with one that I think
- 1:13:12that you might have come across in your research for this
- 1:13:15episode. You know, just trying to be fair
- 1:13:21and maybe people at home will will know the answer to.
- 1:13:24So from 2016 to 2023, the Electric Mayhem got around
- 1:13:28primarily in their custom van. In that time 2 celebrities have
- 1:13:34joined the band inside the van. Can you name them?
- 1:13:39And I I am not counting, you know, like Lilly Singh and Sara
- 1:13:45Chaudhry. And that was about the cast of
- 1:13:46my celebrities. Yeah, yeah, no, not that the
- 1:13:50two, two celebrities have been inside the van.
- 1:13:54Do you know who they? Are OK.
- 1:13:55Here's one that I do know for a fact is Kristin Chenoweth.
- 1:13:58That episode of The Muppets ABC sitcom is very awkward and I do
- 1:14:02not like it. It's the one where Kristin
- 1:14:05Chenoweth kind of gets forced into going on a road trip with
- 1:14:07them and the mayhem all fight with each other over who gets to
- 1:14:12date Janice. It's weird.
- 1:14:15I don't care for it, but you are correct.
- 1:14:17I remember correct both both with about Kristen Chenoweth and
- 1:14:21about how weird that episode is James.
- 1:14:27Corden, that's a great guess. And you are.
- 1:14:30Don't you don't know how close you are?
- 1:14:32Because the answer is Jason Sudeikis.
- 1:14:36Because they did an episode of Carpool Karaoke, James Corden's.
- 1:14:40That's what I was thinking of. That's what I was thinking of,
- 1:14:43but it was Jason Sudeikis. I knew that there was an episode
- 1:14:47of Carpool Karaoke in it, but I never watched that episode
- 1:14:50because it was like, didn't you have to, like, pay extra for it
- 1:14:53or something? Yeah, or like it was.
- 1:14:57I wanna say it was like on Apple TV before.
- 1:14:59Apple TV was like a thing that people subscribed to.
- 1:15:02Like you had to pay for like, their two TV shows.
- 1:15:05Yeah, now I have Apple TV because there's a decent amount
- 1:15:08of stuff like, but I didn't. Then including Frank Rock, No.
- 1:15:12OK. Well, I mean, I was close, but
- 1:15:15but no, you were with both of you.
- 1:15:18I got, I got pretty close, but not what we were looking for.
- 1:15:23And now talk amongst yourselves while I do some math.
- 1:15:28While you're doing that, you want to hear my other question.
- 1:15:31Here's my harder question I was going to ask in case that one
- 1:15:33came up in the in the game, in The Muppets Mayhem, the band
- 1:15:37sings the song Have a Little Faith in Me, recorded by Joe
- 1:15:40Cocker, The show goes out of its way to tell the audience it's a
- 1:15:44Joe Cocker song, but it's not a Joe Cocker song.
- 1:15:46It's a cover. Who sang the original version?
- 1:15:50I don't know. I I knew that it wasn't a Joe
- 1:15:54Cocker song. I did know that because I looked
- 1:15:57this up around when the episode was airing.
- 1:15:59I was. I was like, yeah, John Hyatt is
- 1:16:03the guy's name. I don't know anything else about
- 1:16:04him. No, you.
- 1:16:05Do know something else about John Hyatt?
- 1:16:07Do you do you do. That's.
- 1:16:09I should have remembered John Hyatt.
- 1:16:11You know plenty about John Hyatt.
- 1:16:13I'm getting excited because John Hyatt wrote and performed the
- 1:16:18songs for the Jim Henson Company picture.
- 1:16:24The country bears? Really.
- 1:16:27Wow. He is the lead singer of the
- 1:16:30Country Bears. Wow, that is an insane, I love,
- 1:16:35I love Muppet Connections, where it's like there's this one thing
- 1:16:37where there's a Muppet Connections, this other thing
- 1:16:39that's the Muppet connection, and they actually triangulate
- 1:16:44into three things. I don't.
- 1:16:46I don't have his character here by my desk, but is he only the
- 1:16:52singing voice or? Is he one of the single voices
- 1:16:54too? I believe he's only the singing
- 1:16:55voice. That's amazing.
- 1:16:57Like Dwayne Allman or whoever that was.
- 1:17:00I'm just learning there's country bear figures.
- 1:17:03Yeah, they were McDonald's tie and like, Happy Meal toys.
- 1:17:08Yeah, any day now McFarlane is going to start making highly
- 1:17:11detailed Country Bears action figures.
- 1:17:14I'm ready. Hold on.
- 1:17:16Yeah. Anyway, no, I'm keeping that in.
- 1:17:19Nice. Great.
- 1:17:22OK, so it's looking like let me just 1020304050.
- 1:17:28Yes, it's looking like I'm on the edge of my seat.
- 1:17:31Well, listen, I need to know how many points you each have.
- 1:17:34And so our point total right now, right?
- 1:17:37It's still anybody's game because we are into our final
- 1:17:40game. Say the word.
- 1:17:43In this game, you can wager any amount of points.
- 1:17:47The winner gets those points and the loser loses that.
- 1:17:50You will get to hear the questions before you wager.
- 1:17:55So assuming my math is correct, which I don't, it looks like
- 1:18:02Dave, you have 59 points and Joe you have 92 points.
- 1:18:12So that's how much you have to bet, so.
- 1:18:15I am going to ask you a multi part question.
- 1:18:18Whoever gets more of these answers correct will win back
- 1:18:24their bet. You do not have to get all of
- 1:18:26these answers correct, you just have to get more of them
- 1:18:31correct. So here's the question in an
- 1:18:35episode of the Muppet Christmas Carol season of Tough Pigs.
- 1:18:38Moving Right Along podcast. I mentioned Michael Frith's
- 1:18:43original design sketch for Doctor Teeth.
- 1:18:46You know, the one. It's the one where he's called
- 1:18:49Leon. Dr. Elton John, Don't shoot the
- 1:18:51piano player. Well, on that episode I was
- 1:18:55slightly misinformed because Michael Frith did not draw the
- 1:19:00first sketch of Doctor Teeth. In fact, before that sketch.
- 1:19:07A different artist drew a design sketch for the character who
- 1:19:11would one day become Doctor Teeth.
- 1:19:14This sketch inspired Frith's sketch, which would of course
- 1:19:19lead to the puppet that Don Celine would build.
- 1:19:23Three questions about that 1973 sketch number one, which
- 1:19:29cartoonist drew the original Doctor Teeth sketch question 2.
- 1:19:36What was Doctor Teeth named at the time?
- 1:19:40And question three. What other important Muppet
- 1:19:44reference material did this cartoonist draw in that same
- 1:19:49year, 1973? Joe, you're on a podcast about
- 1:19:54this. Don't give me that face.
- 1:19:55You should know everything about the Electric Mayhem.
- 1:19:58I should I I I have thoughts that I cannot say out loud.
- 1:20:04So we'll let's. Let's figure out what.
- 1:20:07We're doing here. You don't have to get all three
- 1:20:08right. Whoever gets more of these
- 1:20:10questions right will get the points.
- 1:20:13So if Dave gets one and Joe gets zero, then Dave still is
- 1:20:18considered to have gotten it correct.
- 1:20:20What other Muppet reference material had this cartoonist
- 1:20:23drawn in that same year? Holy crap, Becca.
- 1:20:28I know. Listen, 1973 is.
- 1:20:31That right, 1973. You can't get as many right as
- 1:20:35you can. I'm, I'm guessing a lot on here.
- 1:20:43There's a tough one, Becca. Well done.
- 1:20:45See, listen, one of the things that it's it's been tricky.
- 1:20:49I'm trying to make these like somewhat possible and I will say
- 1:20:54one of you did get more of these right than the other, so that
- 1:20:59means it wasn't impossible. But it's tough because one of
- 1:21:05the things I found is people know that I look at Muppet Wiki
- 1:21:08for these ants for these questions, and some people have
- 1:21:11been coming this season prepared, having read what feel
- 1:21:14like relevant articles on Muppet Wiki.
- 1:21:17So I got to click through and like, keep going, which is how I
- 1:21:21got that third part. Because like, even if you read
- 1:21:24the Doctor Teeth page on Muppet Wiki, you weren't going to see
- 1:21:28that third part unless you kept clicking.
- 1:21:32I will say I did a lot of my own research here and nothing that I
- 1:21:35research came up great. Not one thing so.
- 1:21:39I I had. I had.
- 1:21:40I listened to Backstage Pass almost every episode except for
- 1:21:46maybe the the most recent one that came out.
- 1:21:48Because you hate Dave Goles so little.
- 1:21:50Like you were like not listening to anything that Guy is talking
- 1:21:54on. And and then I had a couple.
- 1:22:00Episodes of just The Muppet Show playing in the background only
- 1:22:04to realize I was too busy working to actually pay
- 1:22:06attention to any of it. So yeah, not helpful.
- 1:22:10So I'm like, I'm like back in high school.
- 1:22:12I'm like this is how I study. Didn't work then.
- 1:22:15No reason why it should work now.
- 1:22:16You had 59 points, you got you got some things correct.
- 1:22:21So let's start with Dave. Dave, what cartoonist did you
- 1:22:26say drew the original sketch of Doctor Teeth?
- 1:22:30So I I'm wondering if if you were trying to throw people off
- 1:22:35with specifically using the word cartoonist or if or if it was
- 1:22:42just a nomenclature that you decided to use, but I just took
- 1:22:45a while guess and said it was Jim, Jim Henson.
- 1:22:49It is not Jim Henson, but that is a good guess.
- 1:22:52Unfortunately, I wasn't trying to be that evil.
- 1:22:55But also, Jim Henson once taught me how to doodle.
- 1:22:58Whatever's in my noodle to be a cartoonist is fun in the
- 1:23:02Playhouse video. Wow, you're a cartoonist.
- 1:23:05So it could have been right? But it's not Question two, What
- 1:23:12was Doctor Teeth named at the time?
- 1:23:14Dave, what did you guess for that?
- 1:23:16I guessed who I've heard he was based on, and I've put Dr. John.
- 1:23:22Good guess. He he is based on Dr. John, but
- 1:23:26that was not his name at the time.
- 1:23:29And I said what important Muppet reference material did this
- 1:23:33cartoonist draw in that same year?
- 1:23:36You guessed. I decided to try and go 3 for
- 1:23:40three for wrong and I put animal.
- 1:23:42Yeah, no, did not. Did not design reference
- 1:23:45material for animal, but good guess.
- 1:23:49You bet. 34 points and unfortunately you lose 34
- 1:23:53points, bringing you down to 25 points.
- 1:23:57Joe, you guessed. For the cartoonist name, you
- 1:24:02guessed I guessed Dave Altine Junior.
- 1:24:05A great, a great guess, A great guess, Dave.
- 1:24:09Dave, how old were you in 1973? I was -5.
- 1:24:14OK, that's what I thought. That's what I thought.
- 1:24:16So no. OK, got it.
- 1:24:19I'm. Saying I'm saying I'm missing a
- 1:24:21lot of residuals if. Well, the correct answer is Bob
- 1:24:27Taylor, the cartoonist Bob Taylor drew that first Doctor
- 1:24:33Teeth sketch. What was Doctor Teeth named at
- 1:24:37the time? Joe, you said this.
- 1:24:40This is the only one that I knew for sure.
- 1:24:42He was called the Boogeyman. He was called the Boogeyman.
- 1:24:46You are correct. He was called the Boogeyman.
- 1:24:50So this Bob Taylor sketch of him was labeled as the Boogeyman
- 1:24:58and. Question three, what other
- 1:25:01important Muppet reference material did this cartoonist
- 1:25:04draw in the same year? You said I I just made a guess
- 1:25:09as to like who debuted around the same time and I said the
- 1:25:11Swedish Chef. Yeah, so I actually I meant
- 1:25:15reference material. When I said reference material,
- 1:25:18I didn't mean design sketch of a character because that same
- 1:25:23year. Bob Taylor drew the first Sesame
- 1:25:28Street style guide, the one that's on display at the Museum
- 1:25:33of the Moving Image. The original Sesame Street style
- 1:25:37guide from 1973 was drawn by Bob Taylor.
- 1:25:41That's. Super cool.
- 1:25:42Wow, That is cool. And and this sketch of Doctor
- 1:25:45Teeth that we're referencing here, where he's called The
- 1:25:47Boogeyman, is also or usually on display at the Museum of the
- 1:25:52Moving Image. So that's cool that he's got so
- 1:25:56much of his work up in the museum where it belongs.
- 1:25:59Yeah, no listen, we've got some scans of that 1973 style guide
- 1:26:03on Muppet wiki. I'm not gonna post a link
- 1:26:06because that would spoil the answer to this question, but.
- 1:26:10If you saw my link on social media before you listen to this
- 1:26:12episode, but you should check it out.
- 1:26:15That art is fabulous. And again, you know, before 1973
- 1:26:20there was really no standard way to draw the Sesame Street
- 1:26:22Muppets. And you can tell looking at
- 1:26:25merchandise from before 1973 that that was the case.
- 1:26:29That's why it all looks so cool. I love it.
- 1:26:31But you can tell that there was no style guide before 1973.
- 1:26:37So yeah. Again, a true A true Henson art
- 1:26:42legend. Joe, based on my rules, you have
- 1:26:46earned back your 27 points, bringing you to 119 points, so
- 1:26:56almost 100 points more than Dave.
- 1:26:58But you know what? Dave will always will always be
- 1:27:02a legend around these parts. I'm.
- 1:27:04Just here for the fun. Yeah.
- 1:27:06And Joe, you are, of course, our winner and today's toughest pig.
- 1:27:11Yay. I feel a little.
- 1:27:13I feel a little slighted going up against the editor in chief.
- 1:27:18It's not even that I'm in the editor in chief.
- 1:27:20I always tell people like I don't remember things so well.
- 1:27:23I'm still a human being who's getting older by the day.
- 1:27:26But I did just finish a podcast all about the Electric Mayhem,
- 1:27:30so that may have been a little unfair, but you, you still
- 1:27:35agreed to be here. It's on you, Dave.
- 1:27:37That's true. It's your fault.
- 1:27:39Heavily on me. I warned you.
- 1:27:41I think I even told you that Joe would be your opponent when when
- 1:27:45I brought my friend Alicia from Sesame history on, I didn't warn
- 1:27:50her in advance that Ryan Rowe would be her opponent.
- 1:27:53And well, folks, you'll you'll have heard how that goes.
- 1:27:57But Alicia was a great sport and had a lot of fun.
- 1:28:00My opponent could have been a bowl of dried fruit and I
- 1:28:02probably still would have lost. But I like I said I I came on
- 1:28:06because I want to hang out with with the two of you.
- 1:28:08Well, I really appreciate it Joe.
- 1:28:12You win your choice of prizes, as you know.
- 1:28:16So your choices are as follows. You could choose to win some
- 1:28:21dental floss or this. So I started doing these little
- 1:28:26like art. Card things instead of doing
- 1:28:30magnets, because I got kind of tired of doing magnets.
- 1:28:33So I've got a little art card here of lips.
- 1:28:37And he's wearing a hovelot tshirt.
- 1:28:41That's great. Well, yes he is.
- 1:28:43I'll take the floss. OK.
- 1:28:45I'm just kidding. No, I don't want the floss.
- 1:28:47I want the lips. Yes, thank you.
- 1:28:49No. Very exciting.
- 1:28:51I will definitely send that your way and you can get FLOSS at
- 1:28:55pretty much any any. Like grocery store or pharmacy.
- 1:29:02I mean, look, God bless you for thinking that I floss.
- 1:29:05You got to floss. You got to floss.
- 1:29:09I'm calling up Bill Beretta right now to tell him to tell
- 1:29:13Doctor Teeth that you don't fall on me to Bill Beretta.
- 1:29:18Come on. Every time I do something wrong,
- 1:29:20you're like, I'm going to call Bill Beretta and tell him what
- 1:29:22you did. Well, that brings us to the end
- 1:29:28of another one. So guess where can people find
- 1:29:31you if you wish to be found? Let's start with Dave.
- 1:29:36You can follow me on Instagram and XI guess it's called at Dave
- 1:29:40Whole Team when I get to when I get a chance to post stuff and I
- 1:29:46try and post as much Muppet art as I possibly can.
- 1:29:49Your Muppet art is extremely good.
- 1:29:51I feel like we said that. But let me just, you know, make
- 1:29:54sure that I'm getting a nice clean take of that.
- 1:29:57Your Muppet art is really good. I appreciate that it's it's the
- 1:30:02most inspiring and fun thing to be able to draw.
- 1:30:07I agree. Joe, where can people find you
- 1:30:11if you wish to be found? Well, you're probably gonna
- 1:30:15mention all of the tough pigs social stuff in a moment, so I
- 1:30:18will let you run with that. But.
- 1:30:20Wow. It's like, you know my script.
- 1:30:23It's like I've listened to the show before.
- 1:30:25If you want to find me. Personally, I don't post as much
- 1:30:30because social media will rot our brains.
- 1:30:33But I'm on Twitter at Joe Henness.
- 1:30:36I'm on Instagram at Tough Pigs Joe, and I'm usually hanging out
- 1:30:45at the pizza place out on the corner.
- 1:30:47So if you want to share a slice with me, come find me.
- 1:30:50It'd be great to meet you. All right.
- 1:30:51Well. Hey, that feels like a great
- 1:30:53setup for me to start plugging some tough pigs stuff.
- 1:30:57Tough pigs, as I say now on every podcast, tough pigs
- 1:31:02websites. Been around 22 years. 22 years
- 1:31:06longer than any social media website.
- 1:31:08So the one place I can guarantee that you will find
- 1:31:12usistoughpigs.com. You can also find tough pigs on
- 1:31:16social media for now. Twitter, Instagram, Blue Sky,
