- 0:00Speaker 1: Set up so the ra almost Law hotline car accident
- 0:01Speaker 1: you need Ramos Law, medical doctor and Attorneyramaslaw dot com.
- 0:05Speaker 1: We joined as we are every Thursday from the kitchen
- 0:09Speaker 1: of one Jeff Lagwall at ESPN dot com.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hello, Legy, good morning before I cook Yeah, oh, are
- 0:17Speaker 2: you going to cook up some takes for us?
- 0:19Speaker 3: I just cook up the info right now?
- 0:22Speaker 2: What's the info exiting Indianapolis.
- 0:26Speaker 3: There's a lot of fast guys in the draft. I'll
- 0:28Speaker 3: just leave it at that. They like set records everywhere.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Is that? What do you think this is? Is this
- 0:33Speaker 2: just the evolution genetics thing? Like you go?
- 0:37Speaker 3: You know, it's it's my thirty ninth combine. So I've
- 0:40Speaker 3: seen the players thirty nine years ago, and I've seen
- 0:44Speaker 3: the players now. They certainly, you know, in the early days,
- 0:48Speaker 3: nobody trained for the combine. Mike Mamula is really the
- 0:52Speaker 3: first guy to show up after having trained running the
- 0:58Speaker 3: forty doing the cone drills. He was the first guy
- 1:02Speaker 3: to sort of crack the combine code. And since then
- 1:06Speaker 3: guys come more ready. But this was a fast group,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and the average and the averages were the fastest because inexplicably,
- 1:15Speaker 3: the slower guys the guys who really should have elected
- 1:18Speaker 3: not to run, and the faster guys were like, whatever,
- 1:22Speaker 3: we'll just run anywhere, and they did that.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Just a quick follow up because I there's one guy
- 1:28Speaker 1: that I was really interested to see if the Broncos
- 1:30Speaker 1: would make make a run at and that's Kenyan Sadik
- 1:34Speaker 1: out of Oregon.
- 1:36Speaker 2: He runs four. That's done now, right?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah? Good? You know, actually I would say, uh, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 3: and I know he's he probably wakes up four out
- 1:47Speaker 3: of ten days wishing he had never said the word
- 1:50Speaker 3: joker here, but because we constantly asked him about it. Now,
- 1:56Speaker 3: But the Vanderbilt tight end has the look of that player.
- 2:01Speaker 3: He's a former quarterback Eli Stowers, former quarterback, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and athletically almost every bit athletics as Sadiq. And you know,
- 2:16Speaker 3: another guy proven in a big conference SEC conference. He
- 2:20Speaker 3: went against the best linebackers and safeties in the drafts.
- 2:24Speaker 3: So there is that athletic tight end and probably in
- 2:28Speaker 3: the range they could get him if if that interests them.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I'm curious, Jeffery, you come up with your top hundred
- 2:33Speaker 4: every year. Does the results of the combine affect your
- 2:38Speaker 4: order of business there? Do you make changes after you
- 2:41Speaker 4: watch a guy shine or perhaps fall flat on his face.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Actually, Vic, it's more than medical information I hear about
- 2:48Speaker 3: at the comp that moves people. The workout. You know,
- 2:53Speaker 3: it's great on TV and it's a lot of interests.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I mean, there are tons of people in the stadium
- 2:59Speaker 3: now coming with you know, get the tickets and watch
- 3:02Speaker 3: the workouts. But the teams don't move the guys that
- 3:06Speaker 3: much after the workouts. It's more of a confirmation, you know.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And with with all the electronic tracking now, they have
- 3:14Speaker 3: a better idea of how fast guys are before the combine.
- 3:19Speaker 3: But when you see, you know, how a guy runs.
- 3:23Speaker 3: You know, some guys look labored when they run. Some
- 3:25Speaker 3: guys are smooth, and you know. That kind of stuff
- 3:28Speaker 3: they take note of. But as far as moving guys
- 3:31Speaker 3: whole rounds or something after a combine workout, that doesn't
- 3:35Speaker 3: happen very often, unless it's more of a football character.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You didn't do the work before the combine, they may
- 3:43Speaker 3: punish you for that.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Jeff Lagland with this ESPN dot Com All conversations with
- 3:48Speaker 1: leg Year brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 3:50Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with the job
- 3:53Speaker 1: and with a career. All I've heard, not just now,
- 3:57Speaker 1: but really all college football season is there's Nanda Mendoza
- 4:01Speaker 1: and then a giant gap and then everybody else. If
- 4:05Speaker 1: you had to guess right now, because people always overvalue quarterbacks,
- 4:09Speaker 1: how many get drafted the first round?
- 4:12Speaker 3: Maybe two? You know, I think even this for me,
- 4:16Speaker 3: the second one won't be a first rounder. But Simpson, well,
- 4:21Speaker 3: I mean that's I don't know yet where I'm gonna
- 4:24Speaker 3: put my second quarterback. Simpson is the guys whose name
- 4:28Speaker 3: you hear the most. And he did throw at the Combine,
- 4:32Speaker 3: so he you know, that was good on his part.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I think for some quarterback coaches, a healthy nuss Meyer
- 4:39Speaker 3: is intriguing. You know, everybody knew he was hurt this
- 4:43Speaker 3: past season, but he revealed that the Combine he did
- 4:46Speaker 3: it the second day of fall practice, and it hurt
- 4:52Speaker 3: to throw the entire season, and that he just had
- 4:58Speaker 3: it taken care of an abdominal injury, taking care of
- 5:00Speaker 3: just before the Senior Balls. So I think nuss Meyer
- 5:04Speaker 3: at the Senior Bowl and the Combine has people sort
- 5:07Speaker 3: of going back and doing the work on them and
- 5:10Speaker 3: watching the healthy games as it were, because you're not
- 5:12Speaker 3: going to learn much watching an injured guy try to throw.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So I think that's the guy. People left the combine
- 5:20Speaker 3: at quarterback trying to Okay, we gotta we got to
- 5:22Speaker 3: get the information straight. We gotta get we got to
- 5:24Speaker 3: get the grade right.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Have you heard these talks, these whispers that the Jets
- 5:29Speaker 4: through that tag on Breese Hall because the Broncos were
- 5:31Speaker 4: knocking on the door.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I think they think people were knocking on the door.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I don't know. You know, I still have a hard
- 5:38Speaker 3: time and even you know, I talked to a lot
- 5:41Speaker 3: of people with the Broncos at Indy. I have a
- 5:44Speaker 3: hard time believing you're gonna pay top dollar at running
- 5:47Speaker 3: back and then split the carries, and you know, until
- 5:51Speaker 3: they convinced me they're going, you know, running back A
- 5:56Speaker 3: and running back B, then okay, you know, I'll bite
- 6:00Speaker 3: for the big money contract at running back, but to
- 6:04Speaker 3: go big for Breese Hall or Kenneth Walker or anybody
- 6:07Speaker 3: else and then say RJ. Harvey is a big part
- 6:12Speaker 3: of the offense. You know, I think that's a tough
- 6:16Speaker 3: one financially because you can spend that money on people
- 6:21Speaker 3: who might touch the ball more receiver, tight end or
- 6:25Speaker 3: you know, even you need starters at inside linebacker right now,
- 6:29Speaker 3: or you have a big donut and your defense.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Okay, So back back to the running back, would it
- 6:34Speaker 4: makes sense? Could they actually get somebody in the first
- 6:38Speaker 4: or second round to fill that position? And who are
- 6:40Speaker 4: the targets you might have in mind for the Broncos
- 6:42Speaker 4: at running back?
- 6:44Speaker 3: You know that a thirty the thirtieth pick is basically
- 6:48Speaker 3: a second rounder. So when I look at like, okay,
- 6:51Speaker 3: who would they put there? You know, I think beyond
- 6:55Speaker 3: the first round, I think I think the Arkansas guy
- 6:58Speaker 3: gets a long look. Mike Washington a bigger back. I mean,
- 7:03Speaker 3: he's one of the fastest guys that heavy to run
- 7:07Speaker 3: at the combine.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Isn't he like six to two or six three.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Six two? He's a big back and he would be
- 7:13Speaker 3: a nice compliment. The thing I like about him is
- 7:18Speaker 3: his game video said a lot about him before he
- 7:22Speaker 3: even got to the combine. This isn't hey, that guy
- 7:26Speaker 3: really worked out awesome at the combine. Let's hand him
- 7:28Speaker 3: the ball. This guy was a good player in the SEC,
- 7:32Speaker 3: and you know he has the game tape that backed
- 7:38Speaker 3: up the workout. That's the thing I look for at
- 7:41Speaker 3: the combine but to me, he was the most athletic
- 7:44Speaker 3: beyond Jeremiah Love, who the Broncos would love to have,
- 7:48Speaker 3: because thirty two teams would love to have that guy,
- 7:51Speaker 3: but unless they trade twenty nine picks up, they're not
- 7:55Speaker 3: getting him. So I'd be looking at the bigger backs
- 8:00Speaker 3: beyond that, because you know, again you want you want
- 8:02Speaker 3: to compliment. You don't want r. J. Harvey and then
- 8:05Speaker 3: another guy like r J. Harvey?
- 8:07Speaker 1: Can I throw out a name and this is gonna
- 8:09Speaker 1: be super nerdy and specific, but trying to be a
- 8:11Speaker 1: good moral support for my wife who watches the Huscars
- 8:13Speaker 1: every weekend.
- 8:14Speaker 2: EMITTT.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Johnson looked like an impressive back who could run between
- 8:17Speaker 1: the tackles for a later round pick.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Is he somebody that you think is all right?
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah? You know, and I just finished watching him yesterday
- 8:25Speaker 3: a bunch, so again fits that mold. I think there
- 8:30Speaker 3: are better athletes, yeah the position and who are more
- 8:33Speaker 3: comfortable with sort of the Broncos way of doing the
- 8:38Speaker 3: run game. Now we don't know what that scheme's gonna
- 8:41Speaker 3: look like, because that was the big thing. Sean Payton
- 8:45Speaker 3: was wandering down the hall, you know, day one of
- 8:47Speaker 3: the offseason. You know, the day after they lose, talking
- 8:52Speaker 3: to coaches about was how they're going to fix the
- 8:54Speaker 3: run games. So but he actually had one of the
- 8:58Speaker 3: best moments of the combine. And he walked in the
- 9:02Speaker 3: media area and got up on mistakenly got on Jeremiah
- 9:09Speaker 3: loves podium. They got podiums with the signs on the front,
- 9:13Speaker 3: and he mistakenly miscounted and he walked up and he
- 9:16Speaker 3: started talking and people started asking him questions. Who didn't
- 9:21Speaker 3: know that was Emma Johnson and somebody from the league said, hey,
- 9:27Speaker 3: that's podium four. You're on podium three. And then he
- 9:31Speaker 3: looked out and said, y'all thought I was Jeremiah and
- 9:33Speaker 3: then he walked off. It was hilarious. I thought it
- 9:35Speaker 3: was really funny.
- 9:37Speaker 4: That's great, all right, So running back, I agree with you.
- 9:42Speaker 4: You got to get a different type of back. Then
- 9:44Speaker 4: there's this tight end situation. Evan Ingram is considered a
- 9:49Speaker 4: tight end, but he looks like a receiver. Is it
- 9:52Speaker 4: the position player or is it the way they use
- 9:54Speaker 4: the position? What's the problem in Denver? And could Davis
- 9:57Speaker 4: Web utilize Evan Ingram differently?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Year? Yeah, you know that's the issue is you got
- 10:04Speaker 3: Ingram obviously can get open and get the ball. I
- 10:07Speaker 3: mean a guy had fifty catches or whatever, so he
- 10:10Speaker 3: can get the ball. Their issue is they had three
- 10:13Speaker 3: touchdowns from the entire position group, and not one of them,
- 10:18Speaker 3: not one averaged more than nine point two yards a catch.
- 10:24Speaker 3: That's the issue. You know, it's not getting them the ball,
- 10:28Speaker 3: it's what happens after. So you know, the two way
- 10:33Speaker 3: tight ends, the bigger guys, they're harder to find in
- 10:37Speaker 3: the draft, Like Kate Otton would be a guy in
- 10:40Speaker 3: free agency I think fits that more two way. A
- 10:44Speaker 3: little bigger can play in line if they want him to,
- 10:48Speaker 3: and he's the Tampa guy and he catches the ball,
- 10:52Speaker 3: it gets open on crossers, shallow crossers, you know, seam routes,
- 10:57Speaker 3: all of the things that are in show on Peyton's
- 11:00Speaker 3: offense for the tight end. So I would look for
- 11:03Speaker 3: a bigger guy in free agency, and then maybe in
- 11:06Speaker 3: the draft one of the athletic movers, and that's that's
- 11:10Speaker 3: sort of the combo you want. And then if you
- 11:14Speaker 3: have those two players and Ingram, I think you're suddenly
- 11:17Speaker 3: very sturdy at tight end.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Do you think this is a possibility legging because I
- 11:23Speaker 1: know that there's one rule in the Sean Payton offense.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And I know Davis Webb's taking over, but he's still
- 11:28Speaker 1: gonna have an influence. You have to be six foot
- 11:30Speaker 1: three to be a wide receiver in this offense, because
- 11:33Speaker 1: Marvin Mims can't get on the field despite production. So
- 11:36Speaker 1: I know somebody who's available who's six foot three and
- 11:40Speaker 1: averages twenty two yards per catch, and that's Alec Pierce.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Do you think that that's a possibility they'd be sniffing
- 11:45Speaker 1: around him this free agency?
- 11:48Speaker 3: Certainly should, but you know that's that's the big money.
- 11:51Speaker 3: You know, he's gonna get big money, and the Broncos
- 11:55Speaker 3: obviously have big money. But what is it? What's the
- 11:58Speaker 3: kind of receiver they need?
- 12:00Speaker 1: Just sorry to jump in, what is it with him?
- 12:02Speaker 1: And look, he has a thousand yard season last year,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but he's not in eighty catch eleven yard guy. He's
- 12:08Speaker 1: a forty five catch, thousand yard guy. Why doesn't he
- 12:12Speaker 1: get the ball more often? If he's so effective when
- 12:15Speaker 1: he gets it?
- 12:17Speaker 3: You know, probably just the guys who run the extended routes.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Takes longer for them to free So depends on how
- 12:25Speaker 3: long the quarterback's got to to find it, you know,
- 12:30Speaker 3: or before he hits the top of the rout his
- 12:32Speaker 3: top of the route, the other three guys hit their
- 12:35Speaker 3: top of the route five steps ago. So that's that's
- 12:38Speaker 3: some of it too. And you know, before he got hurt,
- 12:42Speaker 3: Daniel Jones was getting hammered, you know, by password. So
- 12:46Speaker 3: some of it is just a factor of that, and
- 12:48Speaker 3: some of it is you know, when guys run intermediate
- 12:52Speaker 3: deep a lot, you're not gonna have the volume, but
- 12:56Speaker 3: that the other guys are.
- 12:57Speaker 4: How much of a player will the Broncos be on
- 12:59Speaker 4: the first cup days of free agency.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I think they have very specific guys they've targeted vic
- 13:05Speaker 3: so like I think they're very active. This regime is
- 13:10Speaker 3: very active about getting those players as quickly as I mean,
- 13:14Speaker 3: they signed Ben Powers and McGlinchey like two seconds after
- 13:18Speaker 3: the green light went on, you know, so that they'll
- 13:22Speaker 3: be active in that three day wind up, the so
- 13:25Speaker 3: called tampering period where you can where you can start
- 13:29Speaker 3: framing out deals. Yeah, well you can just frame deals out,
- 13:32Speaker 3: nobody can sign them and you can't give guys a
- 13:35Speaker 3: physical to make sure you're right before free agency opens.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So but they'll be framing yeah, and you can even
- 13:44Speaker 3: say i'll see you tomorrow, you know type of thing,
- 13:48Speaker 3: but you just can't sign any paperwork.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Jeff Agwal at ESPN dot com joins us every single Thursday.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Just last couple of things here. When it comes to
- 13:57Speaker 1: what they're looking for in the offseason, we know it's
- 13:59Speaker 1: the the skill position talent.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Everybody wants top grade.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But if they keep their pick at number thirty overall,
- 14:06Speaker 1: what odds do you give that that's going to be
- 14:07Speaker 1: a defensive player? Because Sean Payton, I think has only
- 14:10Speaker 1: taken a couple skill position guys in his career in
- 14:12Speaker 1: the first round.
- 14:14Speaker 3: And that's a strength of the board. You know. I
- 14:17Speaker 3: try to warn people just because you want a receiver
- 14:21Speaker 3: doesn't mean you should take one and leave twenty eight
- 14:24Speaker 3: better graded players on the board. I just don't think
- 14:27Speaker 3: that's how teams operate or should operate. So the strength
- 14:30Speaker 3: of the board is going to be a defensive player,
- 14:33Speaker 3: because that's the first three rounds of the draft are
- 14:38Speaker 3: pretty heavy defense in my mind. I mean, there could
- 14:42Speaker 3: be more safeties going on the first round than running backs.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So I mean that just tells you what it looks like.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I think inside linebacker. Given the number of people they
- 14:51Speaker 3: talked to at the combine formally, I mean every again,
- 14:55Speaker 3: every team talks to every player at the combine. So
- 14:58Speaker 3: all the nine and sixty three reporters who keep asking,
- 15:03Speaker 3: you know, every player, did you talk to the Bengals
- 15:05Speaker 3: did you talk to Yeah, they talk to everybody. That's
- 15:08Speaker 3: why it's the combine. But I think inside lineback, that's it.
- 15:13Speaker 3: That would be a grade that fits that spot. If
- 15:15Speaker 3: the Vander, you know, the Vandy tight ends there, I'd
- 15:18Speaker 3: sure take a long look at that. I don't know
- 15:19Speaker 3: that he will be, but if he was, I think
- 15:23Speaker 3: that would be a quality pick too. And you know
- 15:26Speaker 3: a lot of people are mocking him for a safety,
- 15:29Speaker 3: and there's a ton of talent there, and that's you know,
- 15:31Speaker 3: that's a special teams player, and you know, it's a
- 15:34Speaker 3: lot of things you can do with with a big
- 15:36Speaker 3: time safety.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Thirty seconds here. I know that.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You know, for quarterbacks, appearance, how you carry yourself was
- 15:42Speaker 1: all something that factors in and matters. If you're an
- 15:46Speaker 1: offensive lineman and you have a mullet with bright red
- 15:50Speaker 1: hair in a mustache like Jennings Dunker has, do you
- 15:53Speaker 1: think looking like this as an offensive lineman doesn't improve
- 15:57Speaker 1: your draft stock because it feels like Quinn minors, it
- 15:59Speaker 1: really helped them.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I think you move about ten slots and you have
- 16:02Speaker 3: the lush the lush main like that. I mean, come on, Plus,
- 16:07Speaker 3: he's a big ten lineman. There's nothing better. Yeah, a mullet.
- 16:11Speaker 3: You got a mullet guy from the big ten, working dude.
- 16:14Speaker 3: That's that's all you need.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You If you tell me this guy played on the
- 16:18Speaker 1: offensive line for the Iowa guys I'm in.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I will say that's half the guys I knew in
- 16:23Speaker 3: high school right there. That's the.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Leggy. You're the best.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Thanks for the info is always we'll talk next week.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So your fellows, Jeff Lake well ESPN dot com always
- 16:36Speaker 1: bringing that knowledge with the Capitol k
