- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_06: I am doing the form of let's go that is allowed to happen in the human form because of that signing day.
- 0:58SPEAKER_06: That's how I feel.
- 1:00SPEAKER_06: I feel I'm I'm focusing my happiness on that rather than the basketball game because that's just kind of how we're gonna roll today.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, there's a lot of stuff to be happy about here.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: It's almost Christmas.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: We're gonna, you know, talk a little Christmas stuff later in the episode.
- 1:15SPEAKER_05: We have a bowl game coming up.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, we still have a very good basketball team, we have a very good baseball team.
- 1:22SPEAKER_05: Life is good right now, guys.
- 1:23SPEAKER_05: I know, I know the Gonzaga game kind of sucked.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, and we're gonna talk about that too.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Some reasons, you know, that that we could have seen better from our Red Raiders and stuff we need to improve on and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: But uh, I did want to start off the podcast with something a little different because I was really proud of myself yesterday.
- 1:41SPEAKER_05: I I I came up with this theory, I had I was thinking in my brain, you know, as as a person would, and and I started thinking because I saw the Cardinals get absolutely blown out of the building by the terrible Detroit Lions this weekend.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: And uh this is a pro-Cliff Kingsbury podcast, by the way.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: This isn't just a crap on Cliff, but this is a theory that I kind of thought about and I did research, and then I listened to Ryan Rosillo's podcast this morning, and he mentioned that there was an article written about Cliff Kingsbury and how he struggled come late October.
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: And I was like, damn it, I had that idea, and then it was already in an athletic article, so that went out the bill, but I want to talk about it anyway, because the thing is Cliff Kingsbury hates late October, or maybe he hates the holidays, or maybe he hates cold weather, because ever since Cliff got to Texas Tech, his teams have been significantly worse come late October.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: They always start the season pretty decent and then they always follow.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: And we're seeing that this year.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: It's it's happened nine years in a row.
- 2:51SPEAKER_06: It's actually ridiculous.
- 2:52SPEAKER_06: Is this this is some hashtag analysis, sir?
- 2:55SPEAKER_06: Like you you put on your researcher's cap and you did this, didn't you?
- 2:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I actually did.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: I sat in the parking lot and I started researching every single year that Cliff Kingsbury is coached since he got to Texas Tech.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: And it's actually ridiculous because each and every year he is his teams have just fallen off the face of the map once late October.
- 3:15SPEAKER_06: Well, the the most the most glaring example is year one at Texas Tech 2013.
- 3:20SPEAKER_06: He comes in, what is he rattle off seven straight wins and then loses literally every single one until the bowl game?
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so that that if there's never been a better example than that one, I don't know what is, but you know, you you and I kind of discussed this before the pod started about this this discussion you wanted to have about uh this the golden boy of Club Kingsbury.
- 3:40SPEAKER_06: Um, but it it kind of makes sense in college that he goes really well at the very beginning because you know the the schedule in the Big 12 is set up for you to do very well at the beginning, you know, you're supposed to win at least three games straight.
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: So, like, does that have a lot to do with it?
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: Or well, it does, but it's also on Texas Tech, too, because Texas Tech's non-conference scheduling has been pretty weak.
- 4:04SPEAKER_06: It has been at least lately, yes.
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: It's picking up.
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, we're gonna play NC State in Houston next season, we're gonna play Oregon in the non-conference here pretty soon.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: So it's picking up, but at least since Cliff has been coach, it's been pretty bad.
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, I we're usually playing one to two really bad teams at the start of every single season.
- 4:23SPEAKER_06: Well, it I mean, the the formula has been one FCS team, one G5 team, and one power five team.
- 4:29SPEAKER_06: And that's that's kind of what we've stuck to.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: We've been kind of considering Houston a P5 lately, but remember I remember we also played what Arizona State, um, which it was average, it was an okay game.
- 4:41SPEAKER_06: I mean, but Arizona was in there in Arizona.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: I can't believe we lost like Kevin Sumlin.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we yeah, we scheduled a couple against UTEP, and it's just like, guys, you know, I get why we do some of these games.
- 4:54SPEAKER_05: I would like the non-conference to be better as as a Texas Tech fan.
- 4:59SPEAKER_05: You know, you want to get on that national scale, but this isn't even what this conversation is about.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: This is really about, yes, to your point, the early non-conference games helps this theory work because you are supposed to win your first three games of the season against Uyghur opponents.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: That's what's supposed to happen.
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: But the NFL thing is it's it's mind-boggling because you know, his first year he starts with the Cardinals in 2019 and they start 3-3-1 uh with that tie in there.
- 5:27SPEAKER_05: But then late October hits, they finish two and seven.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: And then last year, 2020, they start off five and two, Kyler Murray, MVP conversation.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: It's fantastic.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: And then they go three and nine and miss the playoffs once late October hits.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: And now this season they start off best team in the NFL, 7-0, and then all of a sudden they're three and four since late October with losses to the terrible Detroit Lions and to the terrible Carolina Panthers.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: So I don't know what it is with Cliff.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: I don't know if he can't finish a season right, but it's it's definitely something that our boy needs to work on.
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: So, do you think it it has more to do with Cliff Kingsbury, or do you have to think it has more to do with these teams adjusting themselves to play against Cliff Kingsbury?
- 6:08SPEAKER_06: Because one of the most infamous things that we remember about being uh tech students during the Cliff era was that Cliff would never really adjust his game plans, you know.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: If he if he was going into the game and that's how he was going to stay the whole game.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Um, so I feel like eventually people would just figure this out, and plus our defense was just so bad that it wasn't hard to just overcome our amazing offense.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: So, is do you think this has to do with a bit with that?
- 6:31SPEAKER_06: Like defenses kind of you know coming, clicking together, and their offenses learning how to overcome the Arizona one, uh Arizona's defense.
- 6:37SPEAKER_06: So, or do you think it's just clip kind of falling apart here or at least getting stale?
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: It's it's hard to say that it's not on Cliff when you have nine straight years of this being a true thing.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: So, you know, from literally from 2013 to this season, every season has gone downhill real quick around late October.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, it's it's hard with nine straight years of data to say it's not Cliff and to say it's just other things.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I think Cliff does have an issue with with adjusting and trying to you know keep his team and and injuries happen, you know, the the the season wears on a team as it does, but uh yeah, I thought I just thought that was interesting to point out because it's it's every single season once late October hits, he he's he's down in the dumps.
- 7:24SPEAKER_06: Well, how are the Cardinals postseason hopes looking?
- 7:27SPEAKER_06: I don't unfortunately close attention to the NFL.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: They're kind of faltering.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: Um, they're still in the playoff picture, and it would actually take a lot because of their really good start for them to miss the playoffs at this point, but it could very well happen.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Kyler Murray has kind of shown that he's not very durable, he's a small guy.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's a little you're taking hits, you know, he's he hasn't been the same since he got hurt earlier in the year.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, I think that has to do with it too.
- 7:51SPEAKER_06: Okay, so you you're saying, you know, Kyler, you got Kyler Murray who's not the most durable man in the world.
- 7:56SPEAKER_06: Are you telling me that Cliff Kingsbury doesn't have Davis Webb, who's still in the NFL, on the Arizona Cardinals?
- 8:03SPEAKER_06: What is he thinking?
- 8:04SPEAKER_06: Not having his boy there.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: He could have traded for him at any time.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: Cliff's actually brought in his fair share of guys that were with him at tech.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's brought in like Antoine Wesley's on the Cardinals now.
- 8:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's brought in Dylan Cantrell to for practice squad stuff.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: I think he brought in DeAndre Washington at a at a point.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: So he he looks out for his own, you know.
- 8:25SPEAKER_06: He took the cliff for that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 8:27SPEAKER_06: Uh, but it it it it is unfortunate to see because he he went um into into the season, or at least he built so much hype behind him in the season.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: People are saying that, like, man, what what was what was uh what were we like overlooking with Cliff before?
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: But it's you're right, man.
- 8:41SPEAKER_06: It's kind of his old habits going back to haunt him.
- 8:43SPEAKER_06: It's kind of crazy, like he's yeah, it's funny because he's still this insanely amazing offensive genius, even in the NFL, but he still just can't put together a complete team.
- 8:54SPEAKER_06: What's going on, you know, like a complete game and all that.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: So, yeah, I mean, you know, we'll we'll see how the how the Cardinals end this season.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: But it I just thought it was pretty jarring seeing nine straight years of of Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals teams, uh, just really faltering once late October hits.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: But uh, I just want to open up the pod with that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: Just you know, we we do we do root for Cliff, we want Cliff to succeed, but so it can so can people stop blaming Texas Tech for no they never will, they never will.
- 9:23SPEAKER_05: It's it's always Lubbock's fault, it's not yeah, Cliff Kingsbury.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, six years wasn't enough, and no, you know, you just can't recruit to Lubbock, as you can see from from Joey Maguire moving up 40 spots in one month uh to the 2022 class.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: Uh let's talk about that.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: What a transition! How about that?
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Fantastic day for Texas Tech and uh and Joey Maguire.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: Uh overall, after the early signing day, we finished 39th uh in recruiting rankings for college football, which when Joey Maguire took over, we were at 79.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, and this is according to uh 247 sports.
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: Um, to move up 40 spots in a month is one of the most impressive recruiting feats I think I've seen in a long time.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: And I don't think that's that's overstated.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: I don't think that's a reactionary thing just because we have a new coach and everything, we're all hyped up.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: That's impressive to do that sort of thing.
- 10:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, that I completely agree.
- 10:20SPEAKER_06: And whatever we look at, not only were we 79th in this year's recruiting, we were 74th last year, and within a month, he brought us well, well, well beyond that to 39, top 40.
- 10:31SPEAKER_06: That's where you want to consistently see Texas Tech is in that top 40 range.
- 10:35SPEAKER_06: Hopefully, we can get further and further down as as he builds on some momentum.
- 10:39SPEAKER_06: But man, it's just it speaks so much to what Joey McGuire has connection-wise because he was able to instantly integrate himself right back into the recruiting scene, you know, kind of transfer what he did at Baylor over to Texas Tech, but just obviously open up his phone book and was able to call up all these uh Texas high schools and even Alabama and Colorado and uh and uh Oklahoma.
- 11:00SPEAKER_06: So he's all he's he's been all over the place as well.
- 11:03SPEAKER_06: But it's been nothing but amazing, and I'm so excited for the future of this program after seeing this signing, uh signing class because it's already awesome.
- 11:11SPEAKER_06: Like that 39th, we'll take that all day for what we've seen.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and we still want to improve, we still want to get better.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: You want to be in you know that that top 20 range eventually, but you know, for for one month, uh, pretty solid for for old Joey.
- 11:25SPEAKER_05: Um, let's talk about the signees because we signed 16 guys uh in the early signing period, uh, four defensive linemen, three linebackers, four defensive backs, uh, one running back, one wide receiver, and three offensive linemen.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: Uh, we also got four transfers, but uh you can tell this class is very uh defense heavy.
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: Um, Joey McGuire knows what we need to improve on, and that is defense and offensive line.
- 11:52SPEAKER_05: And that's what he did.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: We only got two skill position guys in this class, and uh, you know, that could speak to many things.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: I could say uh we have a lot of guys returning, we have a lot of great skill position players already.
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: We still don't have a guy that's in the transfer portal.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: So it I mean, you know, guys like Taj Brooks, guys like Miles Price, you know, we're still waiting on Ezukama's decision, but uh that tells you that a lot of these guys are probably gonna come back.
- 12:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, he didn't get a quarterback in this recruiting class.
- 12:19SPEAKER_05: So uh that kind of tells you Barron Morton, Donovan Smith, Tyler Shuck, those guys are probably sticking around a little bit.
- 12:25SPEAKER_05: So um, I thought that was interesting.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: I think that kind of shows who Joey is as a guy.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, it starts in the trenches with the big guys, the defensive line and the offensive line, and he went really heavy on that.
- 12:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I just love the change of philosophy that we're we're used to.
- 12:40SPEAKER_06: It's like stick, we're not used to you know, just hoarding this amount of big guys and the given to players like this.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: So I love that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_06: I love just the change of mentality we're seeing in the program.
- 12:49SPEAKER_06: And something I'm really excited about, like, especially with these three stars, obviously, it's easy to get excited about the four stars, but I was I've been listening to like I've just been binging Joey McGuire content, especially since he's gotten a Texas Tech, and just the way he talks about his staff and the way he he works in recruiting.
- 13:02SPEAKER_06: Like, he this this guy can't say enough good things about James Blanchard.
- 13:06SPEAKER_06: So he says that James Blanchard, this this former Baylor and NFL scout, has just a brilliant mind, is able to uncover these hidden gems that everyone else is overlooking.
- 13:15SPEAKER_06: I know that's kind of here, you know, like, oh wow, that's a classic Texas Tech go-to set to say, but I I believe it with this guy.
- 13:22SPEAKER_06: I believe it that they they know what they're doing and they know what they're looking for with the staff.
- 13:26SPEAKER_06: I because a lot of times when people say that, you know, we're just looking for hidden gym gyms, I think it's just more of a cover-up to cover up a 79th rank the recruiting class.
- 13:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, we're at 39th, so we do have recognized quality, but I think not only do we have recognized quality, I think we have uh pieces that are expected to be better than what they're ranked.
- 13:44SPEAKER_06: So I think I'm just really excited about that.
- 13:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's and it's getting more guys in a signing class, you know.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: Wells would get 12 to 13 maybe guys each recruiting class, and that's just the numbers don't add up there.
- 13:57SPEAKER_05: I know he just transfers, yeah, and you go after a lot of transfers, guys that aren't like don't grow within the program.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: I think Joey's really trying to get his own guys in here to develop himself and his staff to develop them up to be the type of players that they think they can be and best for Texas Tech, which I think is a better strategy.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: I just don't like I understand the mentality of going for a lot of experienced players in the transfer portal, especially because Matt Wells' seat was so hot the last you know, even the second season in, we were already calling for him to get fired.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I can see him wanting experience on the roster to potentially add to a few more wins quickly rather than waiting, uh, you know, for a for an impatient fan base, basically.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I kind of get that mentality.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: It it clearly didn't work out for him.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: So uh I think Joey's strategy uh will be a little better.
- 14:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean it's not like Joey's not going for the transfer portal as well.
- 14:51SPEAKER_06: We do have four guys coming in from the transfer, uh, but but like you said, it's it's it's one skill player coming in from the from the transfer portal.
- 14:58SPEAKER_06: We're talking we got an old lineman, we got a safety and a linebacker, so it along with the wide receiver uh in Brady Boyd.
- 15:04SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's gonna be more balanced.
- 15:07SPEAKER_06: We just saw uh uh Mal Wells try to go too far into the transfer portal, and he just you can't build a program like that, which we've stated at nauseam here.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: Um, so it's just it's really exciting to see, man.
- 15:18SPEAKER_06: I I love Joey Maguire putting away what basketball and baseball has already done and saying that you can't recruit the Lubbock.
- 15:23SPEAKER_06: Um, and whenever you listen to Joey Maguire talk about that, he brings that up all the time where people are interviewing him about how you know he always heard that it was hard to recruit the Lubbock, and he's found out that it's just it's it's just an excuse because he always brings up that it's one of the biggest towns in the Big 12, and that you know, convincing a kid to fly out to Lubbock a non-stop flight from Dallas or Houston to the Lubbock Airport and just run drive on over to the campus, it's so much better than so many other college campuses uh or college towns can provide.
- 15:50SPEAKER_06: You know, kids are getting recruited into SEC country.
- 15:53SPEAKER_06: Yes, that's a long drive to just drive from Dallas or Houston, but it's hard to get a direct flight from into any of those towns.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: So he says that like that's what he used.
- 16:02SPEAKER_06: He's like Oxford, Mississippi doesn't have an airport you can just fly into from Houston, so and that's just as long of a drive to Lubbock.
- 16:09SPEAKER_06: So he I love that he's just you know he's smacking down all these excuses because now he can't even use it.
- 16:15SPEAKER_06: No, now he can't say that well, we're having trouble getting kids to campus because it's obviously a lie.
- 16:19SPEAKER_06: You get them on a can't get them on a flight, you get them to campus, you can sell them.
- 16:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, I'm glad you pointed that out.
- 16:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, it the airport, the the city, it's big enough.
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: It really is.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: It's it's much bigger than a lot of other places, so yeah, yeah, it's not a metropolitan, it's not Miami, or it's not LA, or it's not Dallas, you know.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: But uh it's it's big, and we have a really diehard fan base out here and easy access to everything.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: I know it's out in West Texas, but a flight, man, it's not a big deal.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: Um it's it's it's a city that has all the amenities, but it's still a college town, it still revolves around Texas Tech.
- 16:53SPEAKER_06: So it's that's what makes it so cool.
- 16:54SPEAKER_06: Like it's just a really big college town, but it has that small town feel.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: That's why we love it so much.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: Um, uh I wanted to highlight Sincere Massey, one of these uh one of the Cedar Hill guys, uh defensive tackle.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: He's a massive human, he's like six five.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: He's he's uh close to 300, if not 300 pounds.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's a massive dude.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: Um, and he's a Cedar Hill guy, so Joey Maguire knows him.
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, we flipped him, I believe he was committed to Arizona State, uh, and then we flipped him to Texas Tech pretty early on in Maguire's hiring.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: Um, I think that dude's gonna be awesome.
- 17:27SPEAKER_05: I really I just have a feeling about him that he's gonna be really good.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: That's that's that's what's circling around.
- 17:32SPEAKER_06: Like all the Texas journalists are saying that Texas Tech got like one of the best uh D-linemen from from the Dallas Fort Worth area, and it's like not even close.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: So I'm really excited to see him.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that's not even including Trayvon McElfine and and uh Joseph Adadier, both of those guys are are really highly touted dudes.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, whether you look at rivals or two, four, seven, sometimes they're four-star or really high three-star.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: So they're all really solid.
- 17:54SPEAKER_05: Uh Ty Kana from Katie, the linebacker, I think is going to be a really key piece.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: Seems like a leader already uh through and through.
- 18:01SPEAKER_05: He was a leader on on KD's squad.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: I think he started all four years over there.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, and that's that's pretty big time for Katie High School because you know how good their football program is.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: Um, so you know, just getting he just seems like the type of guy who's gonna lead, be an instant leader in your program and gonna be a uh starting linebacker, you know, a three or four year starter.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he's got big shoes to fill, starting for four years at Katie.
- 18:24SPEAKER_06: I mean, I expect him to go ahead and immediately fill into that schooler uh Jeppers kind of role.
- 18:28SPEAKER_06: So and hopefully he's an immediate immediate impact freshman.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: Um, the skill position guys, Bryson Donald, the uh the running back, and Tyler King, the wide receiver, both of them fast as hell.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: Uh two of the quickest, quickest kids in Texas.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, so we're all about that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: We we went low on the skill position guys, uh, like I said earlier, because I think we're having a lot of returners, but getting these two players in particular, I think, are gonna be a big part of the program.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: Speed, man.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, look at Joeem the Dream playing in the Pro Bowl.
- 18:56SPEAKER_06: It's just it's just what our wide receivers are made of, man.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: No doubt, no doubt.
- 19:00SPEAKER_05: Um, our lone four-star, according to 247, uh Morion Horn.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: Looks like he's gonna be a defensive back, uh, but he could very well play wide receiver or running back, is what I'm told.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: So, dude is it is a straight up athlete.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: He can do whatever he wants, and he's a four-star guy.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: He's he's obviously very highly tatted.
- 19:19SPEAKER_06: I I'm I'm surprised we still have this guy, and I'm surprised that Matt Wells had this guy.
- 19:23SPEAKER_06: He did.
- 19:24SPEAKER_06: What did it what did Matt Wells do?
- 19:26SPEAKER_06: Put all of his recruiting points in a video game on this guy?
- 19:29SPEAKER_06: Is that what he did?
- 19:30SPEAKER_06: It's like I want this man, this man only.
- 19:32SPEAKER_06: So this is it, this is it.
- 19:33SPEAKER_06: I'm just going all in.
- 19:35SPEAKER_06: An impressive uh reel in from the Wells squad in an even in obviously impressive way to keep him in with the with McGuire.
- 19:40SPEAKER_06: So I guess he's really sold it on Texas Tech, and he'd love to see a guy like that just stick around even with the staff change.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: For sure, for sure.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then the four transfers.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: Uh Kate Briggs is an O-lineman.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: I think he's coming from New Mexico or New Mexico State, one of those two.
- 19:53SPEAKER_05: Um, the Lobos, bro.
- 19:55SPEAKER_06: Do not get oh, was it was it the Lobos?
- 19:57SPEAKER_06: Okay, it was the Lobos of Albuquerque, sir.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, getting getting more depth to that O line because we're we're gonna lose Dawson Deedon, we're gonna lose TJ Storm, and we're gonna and I'm I'm all right with that last one, but uh, but but we're losing some O-linemen, so it's good to get uh some more depth.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Some guys potentially, yeah, exactly.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: Guys who can play right away, exactly.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: Um Mountain West.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: So yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: And so hopefully I know there's a Western Kentucky guy that's still in the portal that's potentially looking at Texas Tech now that his offensive line coach is coming here, and he'll also all conference USA.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: So we'll we'll keep an eye out for those guys.
- 20:33SPEAKER_05: Um, Brady Boyd, you mentioned earlier, wide receiver coming from Minnesota.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was a guy who played with Quinn uh Ewers at uh South Lake.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: So, you know, he's he's obviously pretty skilled.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: Uh so good to get a wide receiver from the transfer portal.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Tyler Owens coming from UT.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: Uh he's a safety.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: Apparently, he's an athletic freak too.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: Just couldn't really find his way on the longhorn roster uh this past season.
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: So he's coming over and then four-star.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, former four-star and high four-star.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: He was like a 0.95 rating on 247, which is huge.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: That's really good.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: And we'll we'll we'll appreciate any guy that finally makes the right decision.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: So yeah, seriously, you know, you can make a mistake as long as you come over here and you know play pretty well over here.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then the last one's Dimitri Moore, who I think is the most interesting one.
- 21:20SPEAKER_05: Um, he was a guy who is actually he's um uh Jalen Peoples, who who was a uh 2022 commit for Texas Tech, his older brother, I believe, uh played.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: I don't believe he played under McGuire at Cedar Hill, but he was like one of those last few years.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: I think he came in maybe a year or two after Joey left uh for Baylor, but he's coming in.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: He was an all SEC freshman uh with Vanderbilt, and then I believe he was like an all SEC second team player uh his next year at Vandy.
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: So, dude knows how to play.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: He's a linebacker.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm excited for him.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: He's had kind of a weird last couple seasons.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: I know he opted out because.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: COVID of the 2020 season opted back in and then he transferred to Missouri State.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: So there's a bunch of stuff going on uh with him.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: So hopefully he can kind of get it all together here at Texas Tech and be that all SEC caliber player that he was.
- 22:12SPEAKER_06: I was about to say I mean it's good to bring a guy that has P5 experience, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
- 22:17SPEAKER_06: You know, we're always starving for uh good players on that side and I'm glad they brought up Jalen People peoples.
- 22:21SPEAKER_06: We haven't um I've just loved what I've seen with him on Twitter.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: This guy seems like just so bought into Texas Tech.
- 22:28SPEAKER_06: He's trying to recruit players all the time.
- 22:31SPEAKER_06: I swear every day he tweets saying oh y'all thought we were done or something like that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_06: Hashtag rec' them and all that.
- 22:38SPEAKER_06: So I I just love that energy man.
- 22:39SPEAKER_06: I love I love this guy's they're just so bought in and excited to get over here.
- 22:43SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah and he's apparently he's a great player too so we yeah I'll take some good really good cornerbacks.
- 22:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah definitely a high three star caliber player so we'll take those defensive backs all freaking day.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Um we're still waiting on two guys hopefully to sign in the February signing period uh in Eric Gray and Gavin Freeman.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: Uh Eric Gray especially is is a really athletic O lineman from Amarillo that um a little concerning that he didn't sign and during early signing day uh it might be he's waiting on some bigger offers.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: Uh hopefully that's not the case and hopefully Joey can reel them back in but um still waiting on a couple guys but this is a really really solid first class for Joey and and the staff it really couldn't have been any better.
- 23:26SPEAKER_06: I mean what more can you ask for in a month and I I think this really shows how smart Kirby Hokut was with pulling the trigger listening to the boosters saying that they're absolutely tired of it with uh with the with Womble donating all that money for the new football facility and now Cody Campbell uh renovating that that ugly side of the stadium so it's just it's time for a change whenever you're you're you're making big moves like that and I'm glad we got in a guy that actually cares about recruiting to this level we've just never seen it this seen it like this before and I think we're gonna be seeing recruiting on the likes that we haven't seen since the leech era so from here on out so and that's the way it should be man we're in the biggest football state in the country we there should be no reason why we're not consistently in the top 30 uh mix so it's it's it's gonna be good to see us back there.
- 24:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah for sure good way to good way to put it you want to talk a little bowl game because Texas text in a bowl this year do you know that we we are indeed over there in east Arkansas or some people think it's western Tennessee it's your decision whether or not you want to put Memphis in one or the other but is that is that a debate it's not no no no no no it is just right there flat on the Mississippi man it is oh yeah it is like a it's like one of those towns where half of the towns in one side half the towns in the other so wow okay I didn't think Memphis was that close yeah no it's right on the Mississippi that's okay that's why that's why you have the great pyramid on the on the Mississippi man just like the Nile just like just like Giza in the Nile yeah okay good that's a good start to compare this Liberty Bowl to the pyramids of Giza yeah that's um yeah we're playing in Memphis we're playing in the Liberty Bowl against uh a uh former former head coach uh at Texas Tech Mike Leach and the Mississippi State Bulldogs um interesting game to say the least we have a lot of stuff going on here at Texas Tech in terms of the coaching staff i i we still don't really know who's gonna be coaching in all the bowl games uh uh but sunny cumby is back we know that for sure he is going to lead Texas Tech in this game he is thank you yeah he's been hired over by Louisiana Tech but he has decided he wants to coach this team in their final game of the year which I think is a really cool thing I love seeing Sonny in the in the double T always will in the red and black so he's always welcome back I'm glad we're all happy for him that he got this head coaching gig but uh you know it'll be cool for this one last ride here uh to coach these boys absolutely man it's gonna be another game for him to test his uh head coaching chops as well you know it's all all experience is good especially whenever you're coaching against your ex-head coach you know yeah so come you played under him that's just how often does that ever happen man so I'll bet it'll be a really cool meeting I'm sure they'll be very happy to see each other um and I I I think obviously the leech drama with Texas Tech will be completely overblown.
- 26:12SPEAKER_06: Um obviously Mike Leech does like to talk about it every once in a while but I think it'll just be a fun game.
- 26:17SPEAKER_06: The more and more I think about it the closer we get the the more excited I am about it because I originally you know where we were talking about like who we want to see in the bowl game I wanted to see us against an LSU because I just thought that'd be a more even matchup.
- 26:28SPEAKER_06: You have these teams who don't have their head coaches and are a complete mess on that side of the ball uh to no fault of their own um so it's I was just hoping for that but I mean now that we're getting closer and closer I think it'll be a fun matchup.
- 26:41SPEAKER_06: What are your initial thoughts?
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: I mean my initial thoughts are that we're we're outmatched a little bit um here and that's not it not necessarily player wise but just we don't have our coaches.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah you know Derek Jones has been hired at Virginia Tech Keith Patterson got hired at ACU.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: We don't know if these guys are actually going to coach in the bowl game the only guy that we've retained from last year's staff is DeAndre Smith.
- 27:02SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: So we have a brand new offensive coordinator coming in Zach Kitley a new defensive coordinator in Tim DeRouder but none of the and Joey McGuire is not coaching the bowl game.
- 27:11SPEAKER_05: So that's where my concern yeah exactly that's where my concern lies is in the coaching staff.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: But uh you know and so that's why I think it and Mississippi State has none of those issues you know Mike Leach is still there their OC and DC are still there so uh I know they have a player or two that have opted out of this bowl game already so we'll see what happens as the week goes on.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: But um you know their quarterback I think is still going to play and he had a fantastic season.
- 27:36SPEAKER_06: So my initial thoughts are that you know it's it's it's we're a little overmatched here but I still think we're gonna bring it yeah me too I mean I think the spread is right where it should be and if anything I think it's it's a little more in our favor than maybe it should be but um it's it's good to see because whenever you look at this this Mississippi State schedule they've been so up and down like and it it's crazy how inconsistent this team has been um but and I so I think that kind of proves that this team is absolutely beatable and I I don't think there's I don't think it's unnecessary to think that there isn't there isn't a chance that we can go and win because like there is a chance um because they've ski skated by some bad teams they've lost two bad teams they've lost to a bad Memphis team this season so it's they're they're absolutely there to to be to be swatted so um it the kind of thing the kind of what's kind of funny about this is we know exactly what we're gonna get you know Mike Leach know we we know Mike Leach quite well so we know exactly the kind of game he's gonna bring and uh I don't know if that's a positive or a negative for us but it's just gonna be kind of funny.
- 28:40SPEAKER_06: This is just kind of a legacy game.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah and and don't be fooled I mean Mike Leach still runs a sort of air raid offense he still throws the ball a ton.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: Uh Will Rogers funnily enough is uh the quarterback's name uh he's thrown for nearly 4500 passing yards this season uh 35 touchdowns to just eight interceptions so he's had a really good year he gets a lot of different receivers involved um you know it's gonna be they're gonna throw a ton they they are they don't have a uh they don't have a super strong rushing attack they don't have a super strong offensive line uh so that's gonna be you know kind of a point of contention uh for Texas Tech we want to get our our defensive line in there to pressure him uh because they they've been pressured all year I think they've given up about 30 sacks this season so um you know that's that's gonna be something to watch um and you know we're i i've been seeing a lot of like these a lot of these articles these preview pieces previewing this game and they're like air raid versus air raid and it's like you guys haven't watched Texas Tech the past three years have you because we are far away from an air raid team anymore uh and Mike Leach definitely still uh incorporates elements of the air raid he's not like the Texas tech air raid of the past he's definitely incorporated some some new stuff and everything but uh he still throws us the ball a ton no that that's a great point man and I I think really if if we bring it like we did against Baylor I think there's a great chance we can come out with a win because Baylor's much better than this Mississippi State team.
- 30:11SPEAKER_06: So we were this close we were a kick away from going into overtime with the Baylor Bears and if we can if we can do it if we could come out and just and just execute like we did against Iowa State uh there's a real chance we can come out with this win.
- 30:22SPEAKER_06: And I think it'd be huge momentum wise going into the offseason and just a great send off for uh Sonny Cumbie obviously and it's been a while since we've been to a bowl game and it's been it'd be longer since we won a bowl game.
- 30:32SPEAKER_06: So I think we're all starving for this.
- 30:33SPEAKER_06: I think it's but at the same time it's kind of like it's new era.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: So we can kind of you know it's not the end of the world if it doesn't go our way.
- 30:41SPEAKER_05: It does look like Donovan Smith going to get the start for this one.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: Who knows if we're gonna see Baron Morton uh potentially if Smith struggles early on we may see a quarterback or two uh we do know Tyler Shuck is not gonna play in this game uh that's what they Texas Tech announced uh whether it's injury still recovering uh from the collarbone whether he's planning on going the NFL whether he's planning on transferring and doesn't want to play in this game we don't know yet.
- 31:07SPEAKER_05: All we know is that Tyler Shuck is not going to play and that Donovan Smith is going to get the first reps uh for this one which I think is a probably a good move.
- 31:15SPEAKER_05: You know Donovan's had you know the last couple games to really get it together and he's been up and down you know we've seen him struggle against an Oklahoma state um team but uh you know we've we've seen him play pretty good against an Iowa state and and even pretty good at times against Baylor.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: So um I think more importantly than who the quarterback is I think it's gonna be interesting to see our running backs and how um we slow the game down against a really high powered offense.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: You know we need to give our defense a break here uh during this game and that is gonna be uh it's gonna be a a big point for Taj Brooks and Serajic Thompson you know to get get the run game going to keep possession uh for Texas Tech and not give them all the chances in the world and tire out our defense.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: So uh you know because that's been a big issue for us.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: We don't have a lot of depth there uh at defense.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: So um you know we'll see how it goes.
- 32:10SPEAKER_06: I'm excited to see uh Texas Tech just go all out these guys that are in their final game of college football Colin Schooler Rico Jeffers uh those type of potentially Eric Ezukama you know just go out with a bang and potentially you know if we beat Mike Leach man this pirate curse thing has to stop yeah and people gotta kind of let go of the Leech era you know some people are hanging on for dear life white knuckle in it and I mean I get it he's the last successful coach we had but come on if we win this game it's it's time to just hang up the the Mike Leech obsession rates please please the the Mike Leach stands you can stand him if you want root for him however you want uh but but please if even if we lose this game we need to just shut it all down with Mike Leach all of it needs to stop absolutely man it's time to go earn those delicious Memphis barbecue ribs I hope our our our big boys eat plenty of those you know stock up um but it's it's definitely time to get in there man and and and reclaim our dignity from Mike Leach because it's time to let go let's move on if this game wasn't on a Tuesday I would be heading up there uh but unfortunately but unfortunately I mean it's only like a it's like a five hour drive from Bad River so it's it's not too bad but uh man being on Tuesday sucks.
- 33:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah it's that's tough that's tough.
- 33:32SPEAKER_06: You know but if you're gonna go I was I was gonna go I remember I was talking to Annie about it my fiance um like you know what maybe Steve and I should go to this game.
- 33:40SPEAKER_06: Maybe maybe because uh my my buddies in Nashville were saying like if if we're playing the cocks I we have to meet up in Memphis and put and uh and catch up but um that did obviously didn't work out that way but you know I think I'd rather I don't know would you have rather the the Bulldogs or the cocks like what do you think is a better matchup?
- 33:57SPEAKER_05: I I mean I think a better matchup first off Mississippi State's seven and five and there were like four SEC teams that were six and six Texas tech games so it's like we always have to play the team that it happened with LSU in the Texas bowl a while ago but let's let's let's slow down for a second and the SEC scheduling allows the seven and five is closer to a six and six in the Big 12.
- 34:19SPEAKER_06: No yeah they get two FCS teams a year or at least two bad G5 teams a year so and if you're in the east but I and if you're in the east you get Vandy you know exactly but I absolutely get what you're saying.
- 34:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah no I mean I I think it would have been cool I'm glad with playing Mississippi State I was I was gonna be happy if we were playing any SEC team to be honest.
- 34:37SPEAKER_05: I didn't want to go to like play like Rutgers or Maryland whoever West Virginia is playing in the uh in the bowl in Arizona like I I didn't want to play like a lowly Big Ten school because that's just not as fun playing an SEC school and potentially and this is probably for like the most attention this is the best game we could have gotten oh for sure playing against Mike Leach so you know hopefully if if we beat Mike Leach oh my god I'm gonna be so happy just just to shut people up about it.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah absolutely but all right let's move on um that game is going to be on the 28th I believe kickoff time is about 530 or 6 somewhere in that range um but yeah you know hopefully uh it'll be fun seeing uh the the the seniors last ride sunny company's last ride hopefully not forever but at least for the for the time being uh with Texas Tech but let's move on uh we didn't talk about Gonzaga uh tough game for Texas Tech basketball losing to the Zags 69 to 55 uh in Phoenix no Terrence Shannon that was kind of uh the heartbreaker that we saw uh at basically a tip off uh TJ was warming up with the team and uh he went out early in uh the previous game against Arkansas State apparently backspasms something that he's dealt with for a for a long time now uh have flared up and he just couldn't give it a go against Gazaga and that really sucks.
- 36:03SPEAKER_06: Hey we were really missing him too man like it's one this is one of those games where you think like what if we did have our best player in would this have looked differently um or at least been closer than it was but it it's just obviously also you know I was talking to Annie about it.
- 36:18SPEAKER_06: Um and you know obviously you want to keep him out for now and you make sure he's nice and healthy before before when it like the big chunk of the season comes in the Big 12 play.
- 36:26SPEAKER_06: So uh I'd rather make sure he's he's a okay now instead of trying to get him in even if it's a huge matchup.
- 36:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah yeah you want him to be healthy for Big 12 play because that's such a freaking gauntlet now every team I believe is like a top 70 Ken Pom or net ranking whatever team so it even K State the worst team is is going to be very good.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Uh not well not very good but they're gonna be formidable.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: Um so but yeah this game it just hurts not having this kind of point guard facilitator that you would have um I think we're kind of ultimately realizing now that you know Kevin McColler as great as he is is just not a point guard.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah you know he's a he's a good player he's he's handling the ball fine uh but you can tell this team just struggles on offense.
- 37:17SPEAKER_06: We're not moving the ball enough we're not getting open we're not getting good shots hardly at all and uh you know it's coming down to really hustle plays and transition buckets and uh we're just not getting enough of those and and especially to beat Gonzaga you're gonna have to learn to play uh your half court offense and uh we've just really struggled hey I mean it's even the fundamentals man I don't know how many times we missed an easy layup it's so frustrating that to watch and uh I obviously I don't want to rag on either of our players but it's just Bryson Williams on offense has just been a struggle to watch lately I don't know what's we've gone up against better competition.
- 37:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah I mean he went for two for 10 in the field goals so it's just what's going on man I I just seems like we can't get the ball through the hoop it just it seems like it's just an issue right now.
- 38:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah Bryson's struggling uh I think we're running a lot of lineups uh basically every lineup has two big guys in it um and I think that's been kind of an issue uh watching it because you can tell some of these guys aren't comfortable in the spots that they're in uh you know bocho's been an extremely bright spot in this team and honestly you know with the way things are trending bocho's playing much better than Bryson is against these good teams and then you know eventually that's gonna that's gonna show that bocho needs his minutes uh bryson's just i he can't he doesn't know where he's where he's supposed to be a lot of the time um i down low he's struggling in the post he can't he can't get any shots to go uh and he's playing good competition man yeah i mean he's uh he it it's like he's being too finesse with it and trying to go around the defender and that you that just won't fly in the Big 12 and um you know I actually like it when he's shooting these threes yeah uh because he's he's actually shooting pretty well um and it looks good and he's taking open shots but uh man every time he gets that ball in the post he feels like he has to force it up and it's just not working.
- 39:11SPEAKER_06: Absolutely man and like like you said with that with Daniel Boccio it kind of seems like it's time to start giving the man more minutes because whenever he like you said whenever he comes out he just makes every other all the other big men look like you know I don't want to say I don't know I don't want to disparage the other players but like he's he's so tough.
- 39:25SPEAKER_06: Like he fights so hard he sacrifices his body for every single ball it seems like he'll throw himself out of bounds he'll dive for a ball and he'll crash he'll crash the backboard so it's just it's so great to see big guys go in like that.
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: It just it feels like it's missing otherwise yeah I think I think the difference with Bacho and even San O Silva to a degree they both know their role like they know what they're there for.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: They're there to play defense rebound and occasionally if they're you know they get a shot they'll take it um I think Bacho is much more naturally skilled than San O Silva is and that's why it shows that you know he looks better.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: I like Marcus's hustle uh the guy just I think he he makes a lot of mistakes and he misses a lot of easy easy shots when he's got a chance at it and he's a bad free throw shooter.
- 40:12SPEAKER_05: So uh you know Bryson I just don't think has found his role on this team yeah uh and and that's really it's it's been a struggle so I hope he figures it out because he he is a good player you know we've seen it against the the lower level teams but uh man he's got to bring it night in and night out especially against the big teams and and bocho is going to be stealing those minutes real quick.
- 40:32SPEAKER_05: Absolutely man and we we've got another tune up game here tomorrow night so it's it's gonna be good to see our guys kind of get their their heads back on straight because uh I I don't know what happened between the Tennessee game and here the well I mean I guess the shooting was just as bad but yeah but uh just we really kind of let this away from us uh but hey hey Kinsaga's awesome the defense is a bright spot the defense is still fantastic I mean we held Drew Timmy and Chet Holmgren to 12 points combined between those two and that's two national player of the year candidates that's uh Chet Holmgren who's gonna be a top five pick in the draft next season I mean uh that's that's really impressive to do that unfortunately you know when you spent exude all that energy stopping those two guys Gonzaga has three more guys they can throw at you and uh when they're knocking down their their threes like they did against us they're gonna kill you they can beat you in so many different ways so uh you know guys like Rasir Bolton and and Nemhard made nine threes between the two of them and uh that was the difference they were knocking down everything there in the second half.
- 41:31SPEAKER_05: So they sure were man yeah so you know we'll we'll figure it out with TJ Shannon this is a little different of a game I don't know if we win if we have TJ Shannon in the lineup but uh it's a good test and I'm you know I love playing these good teams earlier on in the non-conference kitship hyped up and ramped up and ready to go because starting New Year's Day man that's Big 12 play and we play our first four games in the Big 12 three of them are are currently top 10 teams in the nation right now so oh just every year in the Big 12 man and hey the good news is we're hanging on to that 25 spot yeah I mean we did not drop out so we're still ranked we're still out here people still respect us so it just you know you you said before we went into this month against these really good teams that if we went one and two you're pretty happy and that's what we did.
- 42:17SPEAKER_06: So we're pretty happy we still have a lot to look forward to coming here in the Big 12 season.
- 42:21SPEAKER_06: So but it's after the after conference play starts it's nothing but good teams.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: So I hope we get right with these cupcakes before it's over yeah like you said two more non-conference games one against eastern washington here on Wednesday and then I believe Alabama State uh after Christmas sometime and then starting New Year's it's it's full go uh Terrence I think Mark Adams said he's likely out for the eastern washington game I would hold him out for these next two uh just wait until Big 12 play let him heal uh let him stretch out we know he's good yeah we're gonna get practice yeah Terrence is gonna be fine getting back in it he just needs to get right get healthy uh Malik Wilson had a minor surgery uh should be back in a couple weeks though which is good news I mean you hear surgery you're like oh okay here we go a couple months or he's out for the year or whatever but apparently it was very minor but uh something he needed to get solved so uh he's probably gonna be looking back uh sometime in January maybe early February so that's good because the more ball handlers facilitators we can get on this team the better because we desperately need it please yeah seriously so um injury updates there but yeah man um rankings it's it's like losing to a top five team without your best player doesn't hurt you in the rankings uh so good stuff Texas Tech basketball still ranked 25 and Texas Tech baseball we got our first preseason poll out there today number four in the country in the first preseason poll by collegiate baseball you know college baseball has a million different polls but uh this one we are number four uh in preseason so they're they're thinking highly of Texas Tech FinTech
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Bad luck stays goaded, man.
- 44:01SPEAKER_06: And uh not it, not even just that.
- 44:03SPEAKER_06: Uh uh Jace Young was ranked as uh or pre preseason All-American.
- 44:08SPEAKER_06: So a lot of hype going into baseball season.
- 44:11SPEAKER_06: As always, this time of year, I'm always kind of looking forward to baseball season.
- 44:14SPEAKER_06: Once football winds down, it's just basketball, it's like I need another sport in the mix.
- 44:17SPEAKER_06: So it's it's definitely gonna be round the corner here, and I'm excited about it for sure.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: I think we're about six weeks away from baseball season.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: So uh we'll get y'all you know more coverage as that gets a little closer and how the team's shaping up.
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, with with Tim Tadlock and the way this program has trended upwards, I I it's gonna be good, it's gonna be really good.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be Big 12 title hopes good, as of Omaha expected.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: Good.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Yes, you know what else is really good?
- 44:46SPEAKER_05: Matt Mooney and Mac McClung.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 44:49SPEAKER_05: How about those two dudes getting called up?
- 44:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, they've been playing in the G League this season, Mac McClung for the South Bay Lakers, and uh Matt Mooney was actually playing for the new uh Mexico City team uh this season, and uh both of them got called up recently.
- 45:04SPEAKER_05: Matt Mooney to the Knicks and Mac McClung to the Bulls.
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, because of all the COVID issues that's going around the professional leagues right now, they're struggling to find players that can actually play these games.
- 45:15SPEAKER_05: So it's good to see these two dudes get their chance.
- 45:18SPEAKER_06: That is so sick, man.
- 45:19SPEAKER_06: So, what does that mean realistically?
- 45:22SPEAKER_06: Like, what can we expect to see out of this contract for them?
- 45:24SPEAKER_06: Like what in playing wise and all that?
- 45:26SPEAKER_05: Well, they signed 10-day deals, like 10-day exhibition deals, which is basically like hardship deals for the teams that are really struggling with COVID, uh, aka the Pulls, and the Knicks, and a ton of other ones, uh, right now.
- 45:39SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, I we can actually see them get some real run here in these next few games just because of lack of bodies.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: They don't have enough players to play these games.
- 45:48SPEAKER_05: You know, you're looking at like eight-man rotations, maybe uh for these teams.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: Um, so you know, and and with the way the Knicks are playing, the Bulls are playing pretty good.
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: So uh we'll see how Mac fits in there.
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: But uh Mac's been playing great, he's averaging a little under 20 points a game in the G League, playing pretty good, passing the ball more.
- 46:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, he's getting his assist numbers up, which is something he really needed to work on uh going professionally.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: And you know, Matt Mooney, he's a glue guy, he plays well no matter what situation he's in.
- 46:17SPEAKER_05: I'm convinced Matt Mooney could succeed on any franchise with any role.
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: I really do.
- 46:23SPEAKER_06: Defense, baby.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he always brings it defensively.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: He can he's crafty around the rim, he can shoot.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: So um, we'll see.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: I'll be keeping an eye out on the Knicks and the Bulls, seeing uh if our boys get some game time here.
- 46:34SPEAKER_05: You know, Mac Reels?
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude.
- 46:36SPEAKER_05: Well, as soon as Mac McClung breeds bleacher report is all over it, post or something.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: So you know, you know, you'll get some coverage with Mac.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: I I saw like whatever it was announced that on bleach report, it had like 1500 retweets.
- 46:49SPEAKER_06: I'm like, holy cow, man!
- 46:51SPEAKER_05: He was like the YouTube, well, he was a YouTube star, yeah.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: So you know, and then he goes and uh does his old thing.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: So you know, you see former YouTube star, white kid who jumps 45 inches in the air and does windmill dunks, gets a gets a chance with the bulls.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: You're like, okay, I gotta I gotta tweet something out.
- 47:09SPEAKER_05: And you see Texas tech product, it doesn't stink.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: Does not stink.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: We molded him.
- 47:17SPEAKER_06: He was all us, it was all Texas Tech baby.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: Max our boy, he's a red raider for life.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, he claimed to be a red raider for life, so he's our boy forever, and uh he'll he's always gonna be our boy.
- 47:28SPEAKER_06: So 100.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: 100.
- 47:31SPEAKER_05: Um it's almost Christmas time.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: This is the episode before Christmas.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: You know, pretty good holiday, pretty good.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: Uh I'd say up there on my holiday list.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, just good times, good times with the family, good times with everything.
- 47:46SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk a little Christmas.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: Let's have a little Christmas segment, a little Christmas talk, favorite things, talking about all sorts of everything, winter, and Yule tide cheer.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: How what do you say about that?
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Good word, good word, Yule Tide, good, good word, not used enough, not used enough, forgotten.
- 48:05SPEAKER_05: All right, man, let's do it.
- 48:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, we have a couple of just quick fires.
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: We're gonna throw back and forth, talk about our favorite things about Christmas.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: Um, best gift you have ever received uh for Christmas.
- 48:16SPEAKER_06: Man, that's that's so tough because it's it's hard to think, you know, whenever you're a child, you know, you're that excited about that, and whenever you're an adult, you're that excited about that.
- 48:24SPEAKER_06: But you know, whenever I think about gifts that I'm still upset, like obsessively using to this day, it's definitely my turntable.
- 48:33SPEAKER_06: I use my my vinyl player religiously, and that was given to me as a gift in college.
- 48:38SPEAKER_06: And they gave me my first few record my parents did, and they gave me my first records.
- 48:42SPEAKER_06: It was short straight, Johnny Cash, and and the like.
- 48:45SPEAKER_06: So, and I dude, I use I use the the turntable uh multiple times a week, and I still collect obsessively.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: Uh, so I'm gonna have to go with my turntable.
- 48:53SPEAKER_06: I love collecting music and I love collecting my vinyls.
- 48:56SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 48:56SPEAKER_05: You do love your vinyls, I will say.
- 48:58SPEAKER_06: You uh how many do you have now?
- 49:00SPEAKER_06: Dude, I bet I'm getting close.
- 49:02SPEAKER_06: I bet I have like 50.
- 49:04SPEAKER_06: I I would I would guess I would have like I have 50.
- 49:06SPEAKER_06: I know a lot of vinyl heads listening to me right now.
- 49:08SPEAKER_06: My are probably like that's that's amateur numbers, and it's true.
- 49:11SPEAKER_06: I am an amateur, I've only had it for a few years, so yeah, but I have a ton now.
- 49:14SPEAKER_06: I really do.
- 49:15SPEAKER_06: Latest pickup, new T Swift.
- 49:17SPEAKER_06: Yep, uh red.
- 49:19SPEAKER_06: The both the latest pickups have been the T Swifts because she's just dropping them like uh like candy.
- 49:23SPEAKER_06: So yeah, I got we have fearless and red on the vinyl.
- 49:26SPEAKER_06: We'll probably also get uh speak now, whenever that drops as well, because the PLT is a huge Swifty, big time Swifty, just like you.
- 49:33SPEAKER_06: Yes, I do I do enjoy the Swift D.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: I do, yeah, yeah, man.
- 49:38SPEAKER_05: Um, I'll go my my favorite gift.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: I I gotta I'll throw it back a little bit.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: Just like I when I think of my favorite gift, I think of like the most excited I was receiving a gift, and obviously that's when you're younger, that's when you're a kid and you're waking up on Christmas and you see this awesome, like really cool gift.
- 49:54SPEAKER_06: Brightest morning in existence.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: Oh, exactly.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: You know, and my like my parents would always get like you know, a couple of our maybe, maybe if we got a big gift that year or something, they would have it out there kind of unwrapped, like a bike.
- 50:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, basically just out there in front of you for as soon as you walk down the stairs, it's boom, right there in your face.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: Um, my favorite gift when I was I don't know what age I was, I was probably in like the eight to ten range or something like that.
- 50:19SPEAKER_05: But I got this, I got this thing called the green machine, and I don't know if if anybody out there knows what that is, but it's like this three-wheel bike, big wheel.
- 50:28SPEAKER_05: It's basically a giant big wheel, and it's it was sick, dude.
- 50:34SPEAKER_05: I was like not expecting it at all.
- 50:36SPEAKER_05: I was this kid, and we had at our at our old house growing up, we had this long hill that we could go down with, and I remember I freaking probably busted my lip a couple times, uh, just trying to skirt on that big old hill, but just seeing that in like the middle of the living room, this giant, like a little like like big wheel, basically, like you said.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: That was like my favorite gift growing up.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: I I use that thing so much.
- 51:01SPEAKER_06: That's that's a good one, man.
- 51:02SPEAKER_06: Those were always really exciting, like getting getting your bicep first bicycle and everything, like your first real bicycle, you know, whenever you're big enough.
- 51:09SPEAKER_06: And those are always really exciting, man.
- 51:11SPEAKER_06: That's that's a good pick.
- 51:12SPEAKER_05: No doubt, no doubt.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: Um, next topic best Christmas movie.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: And I know you had something else to say about Christmas movies, so you just go ahead and take it with what you will.
- 51:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I just want to start the Christmas movie talk with.
- 51:25SPEAKER_06: I'm kind of a cringe with Christmas movies because you know, people have their movies that they want to obsessively watch every single year.
- 51:33SPEAKER_06: Habitually, it's a tradition, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I don't like re-watching movies that quickly between time.
- 51:41SPEAKER_06: Like once a year to watch a movie like Elf, it's like, okay, this is almost like a chore.
- 51:47SPEAKER_06: Like, I do like Elf, I have nothing against Elf, but it's like, man, I we just watched this last year.
- 51:52SPEAKER_06: Do I have to watch this movie again?
- 51:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, that's just kind of my mentality with with Christmas movies.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: I gotta kind of blend them, I gotta kind of shuffle them between years.
- 52:00SPEAKER_06: What about you?
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: Sounds like you hate elf.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: I don't hate elf, I don't hate any of these movies.
- 52:06SPEAKER_06: It's just I don't want to watch them every single year.
- 52:10SPEAKER_05: You know, I don't know.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: I kind of get that.
- 52:13SPEAKER_05: I don't, I like I'm never one to like want to watch the Christmas movie.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: I'm never like I'm never like to Kristen or to like my family or something.
- 52:23SPEAKER_05: I'm never just like, hey, let's watch a Christmas movie, let's do it right now.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: It's that time of year.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: I'm not, you know, but I we were we were watching a ton of movies this past like weekend.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: This is the first weekend we've actually stayed at home and haven't traveled somewhere in a while.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: So we went crazy.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: We went and saw the new Spider-Man movie, wouldn't watch the new Sandra Bullock movie on Netflix, like really good, actually.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: By the way, the unforgivable, I think is what it was called.
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: Would highly recommend it, it was fantastic.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: Um, but this is about Christmas movies, and we did watch Elf.
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: We watched another, I can't remember the name of the other one.
- 52:55SPEAKER_05: It was kind of a rom-com Christmas movie, but um I'll start it with my favorite.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: My personal favorite Christmas movie is Jim Carrey's Grinch.
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: That's that's unbeatable.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: You can't beat that Christmas because there's so much like actual comedy, yeah, it's not like family laughing, you know, joke in comedy.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: There's like some hilarious freaking stuff in that movie, and I love watching that one.
- 53:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we we we just we just actually just watched that the other night.
- 53:21SPEAKER_06: It dude, it is so funny.
- 53:23SPEAKER_06: Like Jim Carrey just gets me with that kind of humor.
- 53:25SPEAKER_06: So it's the way like is his goopy voices and faces, it's it's it's always a hit, no matter how old you are.
- 53:31SPEAKER_06: So, and that's one of those movies that got like panned by critics.
- 53:34SPEAKER_06: It's just it's yeah, yeah, despised, but it it gets it gets some actual laughter out of me, no doubt.
- 53:39SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 53:40SPEAKER_06: What's what's your favorite?
- 53:41SPEAKER_06: With mine, I actually like it's actually a classic, and it's kind of boring, but I do really, really do like it's a wonderful life.
- 53:48SPEAKER_06: I think it's a wonderful life is is a great Christmas movie because you know it's not like it's not like overly corny, it's not really about anything actually Christmassy, it's just about like you know, it's the classic, you know, just realizing what really matters kind of thing, but it's not like overbearing, and I thought I just think it's like a good classic movie, it's black and white.
- 54:06SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's I I really do like it's a wonderful life.
- 54:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's tough for me now with the black and whites, the old stuff.
- 54:13SPEAKER_05: Like it's tough really watch.
- 54:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's tough for me to watch really old movies.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: Have you seen it's a wonderful life?
- 54:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've seen it's a wonderful life.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: It's just it's it's like one of those that, like, maybe if my dad was watching it and it's like 8 p.m.
- 54:25SPEAKER_05: or something and we're all just chilling out, like maybe we'll we'll throw it on.
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: But it's like the same with like a Christmas story.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: A Christmas story is always on, so you know, around this time of year, it's like when it's it's on every channel, so you're probably gonna peep a few scenes here, but um, yeah, you know, it the old old movies.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: I struggle with it.
- 54:45SPEAKER_06: Well, uh that's my pick.
- 54:47SPEAKER_06: I hope it doesn't make me sound too like try like a tryhard or anything like that, but yeah, yeah, it makes you totally seem like a try hard.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: Your favorite, I'm sure you share that with a lot of other people.
- 55:01SPEAKER_05: Uh maybe not our maybe not our age, but no, uh yeah.
- 55:05SPEAKER_05: So we had one more uh favorite Christmas time treat.
- 55:10SPEAKER_06: Go ahead, dude.
- 55:11SPEAKER_06: I'm a huge eggnog guy.
- 55:12SPEAKER_06: I love eggnog.
- 55:13SPEAKER_06: I get down, I've I've already gone through several bottles this month because I mean what I do with the eggnog is I put rum in it, and it's just it's my favorite thing to just sit down with and and and get a little holly jolly, if you know what I mean.
- 55:26SPEAKER_06: I I I really do love me some eggnog.
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't, I don't eggnog is delish.
- 55:33SPEAKER_05: It's fine.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: I'm not like I don't hate it, but it's it's not also with alcoholic drinks and like dairy.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: I can't do it.
- 55:42SPEAKER_05: I can't do a white Russian.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: I hate white Russians.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: It's milk.
- 55:46SPEAKER_05: You don't put alcohol with milk, you don't do that.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: That's not the right thing to do.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: I can't get down with that.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: I can't, and and listen, eggnog is better with alcohol versus not with alcohol for sure.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: Let's let's get that straight here.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: But it's just not like I'd rather just not.
- 56:02SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, also another one of my favorites.
- 56:04SPEAKER_06: I don't want to double dip here, but hot apple cider with the oranges in the bowling spices with rum in it is spectacular.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: Or whiskey 100.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: That was that was one of the things your brother taught me, I think, uh, when I was working up in Dallas with him.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: Um, you can do the same thing with nog as with whiskey too.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: It's it's true, but you get that hot apple cider, mix it with a little a little whiskey, a little bourbon or whatever.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: It's it works fin.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: It works, it works, it warms you up.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: It's so good.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: Definitely on a cold night, try that out.
- 56:34SPEAKER_05: Hot apple cider with a little whiskey.
- 56:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, it works, or rum, either one.
- 56:40SPEAKER_05: Um, my I I like gingerbread.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: I'm a big gingerbread guy.
- 56:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I like gingerbread too, man.
- 56:45SPEAKER_05: I like gingerbread.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: I think it does need a little frosting because you know, like I it balances gingerbread, the actual gingerbread itself can be a little bitter at times, but uh, you know, it put a little gingerbread, a little frosting, it it hits.
- 57:00SPEAKER_05: I definitely would for it.
- 57:01SPEAKER_06: Soft, yeah.
- 57:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:03SPEAKER_06: I do like me, some nice, fluffy, soft gingerbread.
- 57:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, not a nog, not a nog guy over here.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: That's absurd.
- 57:11SPEAKER_05: It's just it's just not.
- 57:12SPEAKER_05: I just don't, I've never like cared for it.
- 57:15SPEAKER_06: I'm a I've always been a big egg nog guy, you know, even when I was a little kid, even without the booze, big nog guy.
- 57:21SPEAKER_05: I remember one time, uh, either freshman or sophomore year of college, we went over to our friend Leslie's apartment, Leslie and Annie's apartment, actually.
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, and you just you brought a thing you wanted eggnog, you wanted it really bad.
- 57:36SPEAKER_05: You were like, I want eggnog, and I want to throw some of this terrible rum in it.
- 57:40SPEAKER_05: And we did that.
- 57:41SPEAKER_05: The problem is you poured in about half the bottle of rum into this like quart of eggnog, and it was oh, it was disgusting, dude.
- 57:50SPEAKER_06: That sounds like a 19-year-old mistake.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: So yeah, that's that sounds like you.
- 57:54SPEAKER_05: Uh like you.
- 57:56SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: That might have ruined Nog for me.
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 57:59SPEAKER_06: That might have might have, but uh you can't, you gotta kind of blur those years out, like when it comes to alcohol, because none of it made sense.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: No, it didn't.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: It was basically what was the closest energy drink and what was the crappiest liquor that we had in the dorms.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Oh man, yeah, but that's uh it's always a good time around Christmas.
- 58:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, everybody spending time with the family and everything.
- 58:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we do do a song of the week every week on uh talking tech pod.
- 58:29SPEAKER_05: And you know, it's Christmas time, as we've just mentioned.
- 58:32SPEAKER_05: We did a Christmas song on last year's Christmas episode.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: We are going to again do a Christmas song of the week here, uh, something to get you in the spirit and get you just feeling good.
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your Christmas song of the week?
- 58:47SPEAKER_06: You know, for my Christmas song of the week, I'm actually gonna do an artist we haven't done yet.
- 58:50SPEAKER_06: So we're passing on a newbie.
- 58:53SPEAKER_06: And that this is a it's also a great non-Christmas song, but this is just a Christmas version of it.
- 58:58SPEAKER_06: It is Home by Blake Shelton and Michael Bublet.
- 59:02SPEAKER_06: I really do like this rendition.
- 59:04SPEAKER_06: It's a Christmas rendition of home, and they sing it together.
