Latest / Seattle Kraken Audio Network / POSTGAME: Montour saves Kraken from another 3rd period collapse in 5-4 win over Maple Leafs (10/28)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And the Kraken, a power play goal.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Welcome to the Kraken Post Game Show, powered by the
- 0:06Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app, where you can hear the Kraken anytime, anywhere.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now for an in-depth look at tonight's Kraken game. It's
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Kraken Post Game on the Global Credit Union Kraken
- 0:17Speaker 2: Audio Network.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Berkley Catton pushing his career high goals up, a point
- 0:23Speaker 3: streak rather now, to five games with a goal. Here
- 0:27Speaker 3: this evening is fourth goal of the season for him.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Brandon Montour now extending his point streak to four games,
- 0:35Speaker 3: including the game-winning goal here tonight. Five different goal scores,
- 0:39Speaker 3: three from the blue line, and the Seattle Kraken with
- 0:42Speaker 3: a thrilling 5-4 win over Toronto.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Not a come from behind, but a come from the tie?
- 0:51Speaker 4: I mean, you got counterattacked in the third period, but
- 0:55Speaker 4: you pushed back and you countered the counterattack.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And I think that's fine.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I think that, listen, we always talk about the proverbial
- 1:03Speaker 4: tug-of-war situation. And, you know, that flag in the middle
- 1:06Speaker 4: doesn't always stay on your side. You've got to find
- 1:08Speaker 4: a way to get it pulled back over. And I
- 1:11Speaker 4: like the fact that the Kraken were able to do
- 1:12Speaker 4: it without needing to go to overtime or a shootout.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I know they don't want to talk about it, so
- 1:16Speaker 3: you and I will talk about it.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I'll gauge it.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Lane Lambert's temperature on Friday in Calgary. But again, another
- 1:25Speaker 3: third period lead blown. They find a way to get
- 1:28Speaker 3: it done. You're only in game 13. I think if
- 1:32Speaker 3: this is still happening in game 43, maybe that's an issue.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That's a problem.
- 1:37Speaker 3: But the Krakens still have not been able to get
- 1:41Speaker 3: out of the third period this season unscathed.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Now another two goals allowed in the third period. They
- 1:47Speaker 1: get the full two points. They get the win.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And regulation ultimately is what matters, but you'd love to
- 1:53Speaker 3: see this team be able to close out games in
- 1:55Speaker 3: the third.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's a matter of just controlling games.
- 1:59Speaker 4: How are you able to put that choke hold on
- 2:01Speaker 4: your team when you've got a goal or two lead
- 2:03Speaker 4: and not give them a sniff? It's a tough skill.
- 2:07Speaker 4: It's a tough skill because it involves not just the
- 2:09Speaker 4: guys on the ice, but everybody on the bench, or
- 2:11Speaker 4: at least everybody that's going to be going on the
- 2:12Speaker 4: ice in that situation. You've got to have trust in
- 2:15Speaker 4: your own zone. You've got to have trust that guys
- 2:17Speaker 4: are going to make smart decisions with the puck, and
- 2:20Speaker 4: As I mentioned during the broadcast, smart decisions about getting
- 2:22Speaker 4: off the ice before they get tired. There's lots of
- 2:24Speaker 4: little things that you do differently when you're trying to
- 2:27Speaker 4: protect the lead or play with the lead versus trying
- 2:30Speaker 4: to get back in the game.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Let's look at the Leafs.
- 2:32Speaker 3: From a fan perspective, I like when we get to
- 2:37Speaker 3: watch the McDavids and the McKinnons and Matthews and McKenna.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I mean, this was an exciting game if you're a
- 2:45Speaker 3: hockey fan. If you're a fan of offense, you saw
- 2:49Speaker 3: a fight between Fleury and Letary. You saw the offense
- 2:54Speaker 3: from the youth, the next generation. But from a Toronto perspective,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, they lose this game.
- 2:59Speaker 1: They're now 7-6-2.
- 3:01Speaker 3: On the young season. But, I mean, the kids over there,
- 3:04Speaker 3: they're all right. And I think Gavin McKenna, he's going
- 3:07Speaker 3: to have a real strong career. Austin Matthews, now his
- 3:09Speaker 3: 10th goal of the season. We don't see him a
- 3:12Speaker 3: whole lot, so sometimes it's easy to overlook what he's
- 3:16Speaker 3: able to do.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Right, yeah, the Maple Leafs missing Karel Marchenko, Seattle missing
- 3:21Speaker 4: Jared McCann. you know, so some pieces missing from both
- 3:24Speaker 4: sides there. But, you know, those are opportunities for that
- 3:27Speaker 4: youth you talked about. And I agree, you know, as
- 3:29Speaker 4: far as, I mean, you can look at it from
- 3:31Speaker 4: this standpoint. I think of all 13 games so far
- 3:34Speaker 4: this season, this was the best game for a Seattle
- 3:36Speaker 4: Kraken hockey fan.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And I think if you're a hockey fan, if, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 3: we're still very fortunate to be getting a lot of
- 3:42Speaker 3: new fans in the building every game, still upwards of
- 3:45Speaker 3: 2,000 brand new fans each game at CPA. And if
- 3:49Speaker 3: this was your first game, you were treated to one
- 3:52Speaker 3: heck of a spectacle.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, you and I have the fortunate luxury
- 3:57Speaker 4: of sometimes being able to go to an NHL game
- 3:59Speaker 4: on the road that isn't the cracker. It's just two
- 4:01Speaker 4: teams playing that night, and we can sit in the
- 4:05Speaker 4: stands as fans and just enjoy the game of hockey.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Had we been in this building for this kind of
- 4:10Speaker 4: a game with no ties to the Seattle Crackers, we
- 4:12Speaker 4: would have been happy with the outcome, not really having
- 4:16Speaker 4: a skin in the game for either team. This was
- 4:18Speaker 4: a fan's game, 5-4 wins, 4-3 wins. changes in leads
- 4:24Speaker 4: and teams coming back. Lots of excitement. The hit, there
- 4:27Speaker 4: was a fight. Lots to see.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Kraken 5-4 winners over the Leafs.
- 4:31Speaker 3: We'll step out for a break, come back, and wrap
- 4:33Speaker 3: up from the press box after this on the Global
- 4:35Speaker 3: Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.

- 6:49Speaker 3: the final time tonight, welcome back inside of Climate Pledge Arena.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Alongside Al Koniski.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Everett Fitzhugh back with you. It's a 5-4 win for
- 6:58Speaker 3: the Kraken over the Leafs. Five different goals, scores three
- 7:02Speaker 3: from the blue line, including Josh Mahura's first of the season.
- 7:06Speaker 3: First since October.
- 7:07Speaker 1: 18th, 2025 against.
- 7:11Speaker 1: The Toronto Maple Leafs.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And that was his first goal in 134 games, which
- 7:16Speaker 3: was also against.
- 7:17Speaker 1: The Toronto Maple Leafs. Over to you, partner.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Key takeaway for me tonight, finding a way to win.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I can't underscore it enough that that's an important skill set,
- 7:26Speaker 4: a mindset of a team that regardless of what's going
- 7:29Speaker 4: on in the situation, Toronto was pressing there in the
- 7:31Speaker 4: third period, just being relaxed and finding a way to win.
- 7:35Speaker 4: You can't underscore that mentality. Secondly, special teams was a
- 7:39Speaker 4: bit of a challenge tonight for the Kraken, going one
- 7:42Speaker 4: for five on their power play and giving up two
- 7:45Speaker 4: of three opportunities to Toronto on their power play. Too
- 7:49Speaker 4: many power play goals against and not enough for Seattle.
- 7:52Speaker 4: And the third one, anytime I talk about a player
- 7:54Speaker 4: and my key takeaways, it's probably because they didn't get
- 7:57Speaker 4: a star in the game. But I want to give
- 7:58Speaker 4: them some love. And in this case, it's Riker Evans.
- 8:00Speaker 4: I thought Riker Evans had a really good game tonight.
- 8:02Speaker 4: He had a goal. He was plus two on the night.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Threw the body around a couple of times. Playing with
- 8:07Speaker 4: lots of confidence out there. Mama K's three stars tonight.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Third star goes to Josh Mahura with that second goal
- 8:14Speaker 4: of the game. Second star goes to Chandler Stevenson. He
- 8:17Speaker 4: had a goal. He was plus one tonight. And the
- 8:19Speaker 4: first star with the game-winning goal tonight, Brandon Montour. He
- 8:22Speaker 4: was plus three on the evening. Three stars of the
- 8:25Speaker 4: game brought to you by AAA of Washington who give
- 8:27Speaker 4: you triple the savings, triple the adventures, and triple the
- 8:29Speaker 4: peace of mind every time you're on the road.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Join at AAAWA.com.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Kraken now lead the NHL with 14 players with at
- 8:37Speaker 3: least two goals on the season after Chandler Stephenson's second
- 8:40Speaker 3: of the campaign. That'll wrap it up here for us
- 8:43Speaker 3: from Climate Pledge Arena.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Kraken a 5-4 win. Over the Leafs in the air tomorrow.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Touchdown for a Friday night matchup against the Calgary Flames.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Back home next Wednesday against Calgary. They'll take on the
- 8:57Speaker 3: Rangers on Saturday the 4th, and then they are the 7th, rather,
- 9:02Speaker 3: then they're off to Finland for the Global Series. But
- 9:04Speaker 3: first things first, Kraken in Calgary coming up on Friday.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But for now, we go across to Tom's Watch Bar.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Mike Benton standing by to take you the rest of
- 9:13Speaker 3: the way.
- 9:13Speaker 9: Party is already ramping up right here and we're still
- 9:16Speaker 9: a few days out from trick-or-treat, but let's just say
- 9:18Speaker 9: these fans got a treat in the form of entertainment
- 9:22Speaker 9: and the Kraken staving off. A late rally here by
- 9:25Speaker 9: the Maple Leafs to get a late game winning goal
- 9:27Speaker 9: by Brandon Montour and the Kraken finishing 3-1 on a
- 9:31Speaker 9: four game homestand and still making more statements in the
- 9:35Speaker 9: early going. revolving around their youth final score again Kraken
- 9:39Speaker 9: 5 Maple Leafs 4 again Mike Benton with you right

- 10:02Speaker 9: We have highlights coming up, more reaction from downstairs, and
- 10:05Speaker 9: a look ahead here for the Kraken as far as
- 10:07Speaker 9: what's up next as they beat the Leafs 5-4 and
- 10:11Speaker 9: take game one out of two here head-to-head. We're back
- 10:14Speaker 9: in a bit on the Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Gives out a.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Lot of green to winners in schools and retailers awesomely.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Nearly 600 mil to people that play. Another 180 mil

- 10:31Speaker 6: And education from preschool to college.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Now you got.
- 10:34Speaker 6: The knowledge, a win-win for all of us.

- 14:04Speaker 9: have a lot to cover after a 5-4 victory over
- 14:07Speaker 9: the Maple Leafs closing. This four-game homestand at 3-1. This

- 14:21Speaker 9: Visit our showroom today or check us out at toyotaofkirkland.com.
- 14:28Speaker 9: Who else to get the scoring going but Berkeley Canton
- 14:31Speaker 9: just 159 into the game. Point streak now is at
- 14:34Speaker 9: five in a row. Mackie Samaskevich had the assist on
- 14:37Speaker 9: the play but the Maple Leafs would then come right
- 14:39Speaker 9: back to Nothing's up at 19-14. Gavin McKenna on the
- 14:43Speaker 9: man advantage from Ashton Matthews and Darren Radish tied the
- 14:46Speaker 9: game up at one as he pinpointed one right over
- 14:49Speaker 9: the blocker of Philip Grubauer from the right circle. The Kraken, though,
- 14:52Speaker 9: wasting little time responding. First shift into period two and
- 14:57Speaker 9: kind of in turnabout is fair play mode. From the
- 15:00Speaker 9: game against Minnesota, Josh Mahura, 16 seconds into the period.
- 15:04Speaker 9: Finishing at the left wing from Ben Myers and Freddie Goudreau.
- 15:07Speaker 9: That made a 2-1 Kraken, but then they go down
- 15:09Speaker 9: a man, and the Leafs made them pay once again
- 15:12Speaker 9: with the youngster McKenna picking up his second goal of
- 15:15Speaker 9: the night. Fifth on the season. Again, wide open right circle.
- 15:18Speaker 9: Austin Matthews setting him up. He had an assist along
- 15:22Speaker 9: with Jack Roslevic to make it 2-2, and it would
- 15:25Speaker 9: be appearing these two teams would be trading punches all
- 15:29Speaker 9: night long. The Kraken return the favor on a man
- 15:32Speaker 9: advantage of their own. 3-33 into period two. Chandler Stevenson
- 15:37Speaker 9: looked toward the front to Matty Beneers. The pass glancing
- 15:40Speaker 9: off the Maple Leafs penalty kill and in. So Stevenson
- 15:43Speaker 9: gets credit for the power play goal. Second of the
- 15:45Speaker 9: year from Vince Dunn and Beneers. Make it 3-2. And
- 15:49Speaker 9: then it was Riker Evans looking for more with a
- 15:52Speaker 9: little under 11 minutes into period two.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Now Ryker Evans shoots, scores!
- 16:05Speaker 17: Riker Evans off the post and in!
- 16:08Speaker 3: And the Seattle Kraken go up 4-2, 9-0-2 left in
- 16:14Speaker 3: period number two.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Well, Mackie Savas-Gimmich with some speed through the middle, finds
- 16:18Speaker 4: Riker Evans down that left side, and Evans with a
- 16:21Speaker 4: shooting lane, wastes no time getting it off, beating Bobrovsky,
- 16:25Speaker 4: glove side.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Post in, 4-2 Kraken.
- 16:28Speaker 9: Everett now mentioned how great Riker Evans played today. Matter
- 16:31Speaker 9: of fact, that's his third goal now in the last
- 16:33Speaker 9: five games, so he's heating up on the back end.
- 16:36Speaker 9: At that point, it marked the eighth player to get
- 16:39Speaker 9: a point in this game or more on the Kraken side,
- 16:41Speaker 9: and it made it 4-2 for Mackie Samuskevich and Chandler Stevenson.
- 16:45Speaker 9: That lead holding up at the end of period two.
- 16:48Speaker 9: Maybe it was enough. Leafs said not so fast. 8.02
- 16:52Speaker 9: into period three. Jack Roslevic wide open for a rebound
- 16:56Speaker 9: at the left circle. Tucked his sixth goal of the
- 16:58Speaker 9: season past Philip Grubauer. Easton Cowan, Troy Stetcher had the
- 17:02Speaker 9: assist on the play. And then it was then the
- 17:04Speaker 9: Leafs pulling the goaltender, looking for an equalizer with the
- 17:09Speaker 9: game in the dying seconds.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Now Matthews up top. Radish to Matthews. Sharp angle shot.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And he scores.
- 17:23Speaker 3: And another blown third period lead for Seattle. The Leafs,
- 17:30Speaker 3: 89 seconds to play, tie the game at four.
- 17:34Speaker 9: And another painful lesson the Kraken certainly learned about protecting
- 17:38Speaker 9: a lead. This time, Auston Matthews ties things up on
- 17:41Speaker 9: his multi-point 9-10 goal of the season from Darren Radish
- 17:44Speaker 9: and Gavin McKenna again. That made it 4-4, and it
- 17:48Speaker 9: appeared overtime was a mere formality. But Brandon Montour, with
- 17:53Speaker 9: less than a minute left in regulation, had other ideas.
- 17:57Speaker 19: Montour, right side shot, scores! It's the Full Monty! Here
- 18:10Speaker 19: in Seattle, 32 seconds.
- 18:12Speaker 17: To play in regulation, and the Seattle Kraken have regained
- 18:18Speaker 17: the lead.
- 18:19Speaker 1: 5-4, 32.7 left in regulation.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Well, I talked a moment ago about how important face-offs
- 18:23Speaker 4: are at the defensive end of the ice. This time,
- 18:26Speaker 4: Matty Beneers with the win, pulling it back to Jordan Eberle.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Eberle with a nice feed over to Montour, who gets
- 18:32Speaker 4: a bomb off. Buoyed it by Bobrovsky. 5-4 Seattle, 32.7
- 18:37Speaker 4: seconds left to go.
- 18:39Speaker 9: More plot twists in this game than a Martin Scorsese movie.
- 18:42Speaker 9: Brandon Montour, game-winning goal, go-ahead goal at 19-27, a period
- 18:49Speaker 9: three in dramatic fashion, which basically tore the roof off
- 18:52Speaker 9: this place as far as volume. Jordan Eberle, Bobby McMahon
- 18:55Speaker 9: had the assist as well on the play, and that
- 18:58Speaker 9: was enough. To close this game out in heart-stopping fashion,
- 19:01Speaker 9: your final score, Kraken 5 and the Leafs 4. Final
- 19:05Speaker 9: shots on net, not much here in this game, funny enough.
- 19:08Speaker 9: 22-17 in favor of the Leafs, and the win in
- 19:12Speaker 9: net going to Philip Grubauer, who was good enough with
- 19:15Speaker 9: 18 saves on 22 shots on net. Sergey Bobrovsky taking
- 19:19Speaker 9: the loss in net tonight, giving up five goals on
- 19:22Speaker 9: 17 shots in this game. So not bad as far
- 19:26Speaker 9: as the effort and the mark of resiliency on the
- 19:29Speaker 9: Kraken side as they take this one. And we now
- 19:31Speaker 9: turn our attention here to our chillest moments of this game.
- 19:34Speaker 9: And again, Kraken fans, a reminder, you can win your
- 19:36Speaker 9: chance to sit in the Coors Light silver seats. Go
- 19:39Speaker 9: to CoorsLight.com forward slash Seattle Kraken to enter. Must be
- 19:43Speaker 9: 21 years of age. No purchase necessary.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Coors Light.
- 19:47Speaker 9: Juice Chill, celebrate responsibly. With the game tied at one
- 19:52Speaker 9: in the second period, here comes Josh Mahura looking for
- 19:56Speaker 9: more damage on the Leafs.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Ben Myers, a two-on-one. He's got Mahura. Myers in front.
- 20:01Speaker 6: Mahura scores!
- 20:10Speaker 19: Josh Mahura cashes in on the two-on-one and the Seattle
- 20:16Speaker 19: Kraken go up two-to-one with.
- 20:20Speaker 1: 19-44 to play in the second.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Well, it's a jailbreak out of the Seattle into the
- 20:23Speaker 4: ice and Ben Myers has got the speed down that
- 20:25Speaker 4: right side. He's on his off-wings with a good opportunity
- 20:28Speaker 4: for his shot, but he sauces the puck over to
- 20:31Speaker 4: Josh Mahura.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Who puts it home. Mahura with his first of the season,
- 20:35Speaker 1: Kraken up two-to-one.
- 20:37Speaker 9: There's just something against the Leafs that makes Josh Mahura
- 20:40Speaker 9: crank his game up a notch, and he was one
- 20:42Speaker 9: of 11 players that got a point or more in
- 20:44Speaker 9: this game on the cracking side, and that was big
- 20:47Speaker 9: to again set the tone after Toronto scored late in
- 20:49Speaker 9: period one. Josh Mahura's goal early in the second, our
- 20:53Speaker 9: first chillest moment of the night. The second one, the
- 20:56Speaker 9: obvious one. Brandon Montour's game-winning goal, certainly a testimony of
- 21:00Speaker 9: resiliency as the Kraken close out the league tonight. And
- 21:03Speaker 9: it matters as far as who got the last one,
- 21:05Speaker 9: and it was Montour who certainly played. have the honors
- 21:08Speaker 9: here in this game. Time now for the big win,

- 21:31Speaker 9: Capital One Arena, where the Capitals had a newcomer again
- 21:35Speaker 9: looking to make a big impact.
- 21:36Speaker 20: Here's a pass out up top, down low to Dylan Strom,
- 21:39Speaker 20: the rebound, they score!
- 21:40Speaker 6: It pops right out to.
- 21:41Speaker 20: The left circle, and Washington makes no mistake from there.
- 21:46Speaker 20: Wall made the initial save, but Jordan Kyrou, one of
- 21:49Speaker 20: the newcomers again, gets his third goal on the man advantage.
- 21:54Speaker 9: And it was Jordan Kyrou who scored twice tonight as
- 21:57Speaker 9: the Capitals knocked off. The Flyers in a 5-2 final,
- 22:00Speaker 9: improving to 7-4 on the season. Final score once again
- 22:04Speaker 9: here from Climate Pledge Arena, Kraken 5, Maple Leafs 4.

- 31:41Speaker 9: across the street from Climate Pledge Arena. Again, your final score,
- 31:45Speaker 9: Kraken 5, Maple Leafs 4. Once again, edge of your seat,
- 31:48Speaker 9: tough wear. The Kraken once more prove that while third
- 31:52Speaker 9: periods may be on shaky ground, they certainly can find
- 31:56Speaker 9: a way to finish. And they did just that tonight,
- 31:58Speaker 9: courtesy Brandon Montour's late game-winning goal and finished this thing
- 32:03Speaker 9: off in similar dramatic fashion akin to wins over Utah.
- 32:08Speaker 9: and the Detroit Red Wings. So I want to hear
- 32:11Speaker 9: from you as far as your feedback on this game.
- 32:14Speaker 9: Give it to me in one sentence. What did it
- 32:16Speaker 9: feel like start to end? 4-9-4-5-1, Tacoma-Dodge text line. Once again,
- 32:21Speaker 9: Tacoma-Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram in the corner of 38th and
- 32:25Speaker 9: South Tacoma Way, the intersection of savings. Again, Tacoma-Dodge text line.
- 32:29Speaker 9: That's open right.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Now at 4-9-4-5.
- 32:32Speaker 9: Phone lines also open in case you want to call
- 32:36Speaker 9: us just like last time 206-286-9595 and also voice memos
- 32:41Speaker 9: we're taking those so simply put you got 30 seconds
- 32:44Speaker 9: here to record your thoughts upload them here via the
- 32:47Speaker 9: iHeartRadio app just find the red mic icon at 933kjr. com
- 32:52Speaker 9: again keep your thoughts 30 seconds or less you're done
- 32:56Speaker 9: we'll look for them and we'll get your thoughts as
- 32:58Speaker 9: well on the air sooner than later Ian Furness will
- 33:02Speaker 9: be joining us. He had the TV call here for
- 33:04Speaker 9: tonight's game on the Kraken Hockey Network. And also we're
- 33:07Speaker 9: looking at hearing from head coach Lane Lambert. And three
- 33:11Speaker 9: things I wanted to get on here that I think
- 33:14Speaker 9: really potentially had an effect on this game. Number one
- 33:17Speaker 9: was Berkeley Catton's line. Number two was maybe Bobby McMahon's
- 33:21Speaker 9: presence and his impact here. And number three was the
- 33:24Speaker 9: special teams battle. I think if you break it down,
- 33:27Speaker 9: one made an impact, one had no difference in this one,
- 33:30Speaker 9: and the other, well, the Kraken had pure survival mode.
- 33:34Speaker 9: That was until the Kraken got late into this game
- 33:37Speaker 9: and once again proved that they have issues defending a
- 33:40Speaker 9: third period lead. Maybe it isn't as sharp as, say,
- 33:44Speaker 9: if you're chasing in the first period lead. down to
- 33:47Speaker 9: nothing and have to make your way up ground. It's
- 33:49Speaker 9: like we've maybe seen about a couple of years ago
- 33:52Speaker 9: here with this team. Don't forget the comeback wins that
- 33:54Speaker 9: they had under Dan Bilesma. Well, it's fun to come
- 33:57Speaker 9: back and win, but when you're doing that, consistently chasing
- 34:01Speaker 9: a hockey game, teams tend to burn a lot more energy.
- 34:05Speaker 9: So tonight, once again, on the flip side, the Kraken
- 34:09Speaker 9: do enough to get a lead early on. Maybe it's
- 34:12Speaker 9: sweated-out moments late in the third period here.
- 34:15Speaker 1: But eventually.
- 34:16Speaker 9: You find a way to get this done with players
- 34:18Speaker 9: who can certainly make a big impact, and that's what
- 34:21Speaker 9: Brandon Montour certainly did. So again, 49451, we'll get to
- 34:24Speaker 9: your thoughts coming up here, plus also Lane Lambert and
- 34:27Speaker 9: Ian Furness joining us by phone. First period, I thought
- 34:31Speaker 9: the Kraken, despite getting outshot early, looked great, and the
- 34:35Speaker 9: line that made them look great was a line that
- 34:37Speaker 9: we thought would make them look great.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Berkeley Catton.
- 34:41Speaker 9: Because I don't think you can really describe much more
- 34:45Speaker 9: for a goal that he's scored than just simply put,
- 34:48Speaker 9: it's a player who is developing into a highly skilled forward,
- 34:52Speaker 9: making a highly skilled play. Right now his point streak
- 34:57Speaker 9: is at five, but we saw maybe from the previous
- 35:00Speaker 9: game some breadcrumbs that were laid out with him maybe
- 35:04Speaker 9: getting more ice time, and that certainly happened here for
- 35:07Speaker 9: this game with, From the lineup that we saw put
- 35:10Speaker 9: out before the game, his line with Capococco, left wing,
- 35:14Speaker 9: Shane Wright on the right wing. Effectively, optics-wise, promoted all
- 35:19Speaker 9: the way to the second line. And we'll take a
- 35:21Speaker 9: look here as far as the final totals in this one.
- 35:23Speaker 9: But from what we saw after two periods of play,
- 35:27Speaker 9: Berkeley Catton was the second most used centerman. on this team.
- 35:30Speaker 9: So you put him right back out there. You're looking
- 35:33Speaker 9: to get something out of him as far as production,
- 35:35Speaker 9: and he wastes little time putting the puck into the
- 35:38Speaker 9: back of the net. That's a player understanding his role.
- 35:42Speaker 9: That's a player who is coming through early on to
- 35:45Speaker 9: make a big impact and a player who has certainly
- 35:48Speaker 9: set the tone here in this game. Berkeley Canton made
- 35:51Speaker 9: it 1-0. Gavin McKenna came right back on a power
- 35:54Speaker 9: play goal late. That shot he's got already missed. is
- 35:58Speaker 9: very deadly. We saw what he can do not once
- 36:00Speaker 9: but twice. The second period was where the Kraken made
- 36:04Speaker 9: the biggest push and ultimately it was what made the
- 36:07Speaker 9: biggest difference here in this game. Maybe you're thinking that
- 36:10Speaker 9: special teams was going to make or break them in
- 36:13Speaker 9: this one and the more power play chances they had
- 36:16Speaker 9: and the inability to maybe put the Maple Leafs further
- 36:19Speaker 9: and further back was something that could have come back
- 36:21Speaker 9: to bite them. Maybe that was also at the forefront
- 36:23Speaker 9: when Brandon Montour tied this game.
- 36:26Speaker 4: But ultimately.
- 36:27Speaker 9: The Kraken doing enough in the second period, wrapped around
- 36:31Speaker 9: a power play goal to finally make a big difference
- 36:34Speaker 9: here in this game. So you hold off Austin Matthews,
- 36:38Speaker 9: and what they can do at six on five, he
- 36:41Speaker 9: certainly showed up. He had a multi-point game, but then
- 36:44Speaker 9: you put the right guys on the ice at the
- 36:46Speaker 9: right time, and Brandon Montour does enough, a player who
- 36:50Speaker 9: is going to make a big, big difference here in
- 36:52Speaker 9: this game and this evening. Well, it wasn't at the
- 36:56Speaker 9: 30-minute mark where you usually see Chris Pronger numbers or
- 37:00Speaker 9: Drew Downey numbers here, but 27 minutes and 10 seconds,
- 37:04Speaker 9: far and away, most used player on the Kraken side.
- 37:07Speaker 9: In case you're wondering, Berkeley Canton tonight, 15 minutes, 5
- 37:11Speaker 9: seconds of ice time, even strength numbers, 12 minutes and
- 37:16Speaker 9: 34 seconds of ice time as well. So once again,
- 37:19Speaker 9: your final score, Kraken 5, Maple Leafs 4, Without further ado,
- 37:24Speaker 9: we go to the Beacon Plumbing Hotline right now. The
- 37:26Speaker 9: mayor of Maple Valley joining us here. He was in
- 37:29Speaker 9: the booth tonight on the Kraken Hockey Network. That's Ian
- 37:33Speaker 9: Furness joining us right now on Talking Kraken. Mayor, good
- 37:38Speaker 9: evening to you.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Hello, how you doing?
- 37:41Speaker 10: Captain, how are you?
- 37:43Speaker 9: Was that a fun one or what? What do we
- 37:46Speaker 9: learn about this team? First period, second period, and third period.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Take it away.
- 37:52Speaker 10: Well, I mean, it's the same thing we've been talking about.
- 37:54Speaker 10: It's that same word we've been talking about. It's resilient.
- 37:58Speaker 10: You would rather them not be that resilient. I'll be
- 38:01Speaker 10: curious to hear when you have Coach Lambert and his
- 38:05Speaker 10: comments coming up because I believe he's tired of talking
- 38:08Speaker 10: about third-period leads and the issues they're having with those. But,
- 38:12Speaker 10: you know, I mean, end of the day, Mike, it's
- 38:15Speaker 10: two points. You get a win. You do it in
- 38:16Speaker 10: dramatic fashion, whether it's losing a lead against Detroit's And
- 38:23Speaker 10: then finding a way to get the win, you know,
- 38:25Speaker 10: late and entertain the fans that way or blowing a
- 38:30Speaker 10: lead against Utah and coming back to get a win
- 38:32Speaker 10: against them or this dramatic fashion as well. I'd say this,
- 38:35Speaker 10: if you're a fan going to the games at Climate
- 38:37Speaker 10: Pledge Arena or watching on the Kraken Hockey Network or
- 38:40Speaker 10: listening on the Kraken Audio Network, you're getting your money's worth.
- 38:44Speaker 10: That's for sure. You get your money's worth tonight. But
- 38:46Speaker 10: what a win. Great win. And it's nice. Very nice
- 38:50Speaker 10: to get that two points.
- 38:51Speaker 9: And this offense certainly got their money's worth once again, Ian,
- 38:54Speaker 9: as depth was showing up and down the lineup. 11
- 38:57Speaker 9: players on the score sheet. Chandler Stevenson, two-point game. Matty Beneers,
- 39:01Speaker 9: two-point game. Mackie Samaskevich, two-point game. And you've got guys
- 39:06Speaker 9: contributing on the back end from Riker Evans, who's got
- 39:08Speaker 9: his third goal now in the last five games, to
- 39:10Speaker 9: Brandon Montour coming through in the clutch. So I think
- 39:15Speaker 9: beyond that, what we talked about early on, was what
- 39:19Speaker 9: could Bertley Catton's line do with, maybe at least on
- 39:22Speaker 9: the optics side, some elevated presence, and maybe we saw
- 39:24Speaker 9: this coming here. He, Capo Caco, Shane Wright promoted to
- 39:29Speaker 9: line number two. Now things kind of evening out where
- 39:32Speaker 9: his ice time maybe fell back a little bit in
- 39:35Speaker 9: period three and that may be a bit understandable based
- 39:37Speaker 9: on what you're looking for as far as certain matchups
- 39:40Speaker 9: here but I mean early on first and second period
- 39:43Speaker 9: we saw Katton getting out you know matchups wise against
- 39:47Speaker 9: the Leafs second line with Nick Paul and What do
- 39:50Speaker 9: you know? First period comes right through, wasting little time.
- 39:54Speaker 9: It's a highly skilled player making a highly skilled play.
- 39:59Speaker 9: Creativity and going high. Backhander, a thing of beauty on
- 40:03Speaker 9: Sergey Bobrovsky. Overall, what did you make out of Berkley-Catton's line?
- 40:09Speaker 10: Every game that Berkley Catton plays, he gets better. And
- 40:13Speaker 10: every game Berkley Catton plays, I love watching him play.
- 40:17Speaker 10: I am such a fan of watching number 27. You know,
- 40:22Speaker 10: last year was a tough year, obviously, probably for him,
- 40:26Speaker 10: making the transition from the Western Hockey League in Spokane
- 40:29Speaker 10: to the National Hockey League. That's a tough transition. You know,
- 40:34Speaker 10: we're watching Gavin McKenna tonight, you know, at the age
- 40:37Speaker 10: of 18 and having a three-point night and You know,
- 40:40Speaker 10: McKenna had the bonus of going from the dub to
- 40:43Speaker 10: playing against, you know, younger men, but men in college.
- 40:47Speaker 10: And I think it helped him. You know, Berkeley, because
- 40:49Speaker 10: of the rules, which have now since changed, had to
- 40:52Speaker 10: come right to the NHL. Nothing was going to happen
- 40:54Speaker 10: for him in juniors last year. But I think it
- 40:56Speaker 10: paid off. You know, Lane Lavers talked about that. I think,
- 40:58Speaker 10: you know, even though the numbers weren't there last year,
- 41:02Speaker 10: and even though there's some, you know, people that might have,
- 41:04Speaker 10: you know, questioned, wow, is this guy really going to
- 41:06Speaker 10: be you know, a cornerstone piece for your franchise. I
- 41:10Speaker 10: think it was important for him to do that. He's just,
- 41:13Speaker 10: he sees the ice at a different level. He's got
- 41:16Speaker 10: a skill level that is higher than most, certainly on
- 41:21Speaker 10: this team. He's just a special player and it's just
- 41:25Speaker 10: fun to watch him. And it's fun to watch him
- 41:27Speaker 10: get better every game. You know, I think even watching
- 41:30Speaker 10: him in his own end, he's getting better as well.
- 41:33Speaker 10: I thought Shane struggled a little bit tonight, and I've
- 41:36Speaker 10: been a huge proponent and fan of his this year.
- 41:39Speaker 10: I thought he was fighting a little bit, and that
- 41:42Speaker 10: maybe took a little bit away from that line, but
- 41:44Speaker 10: that's just one game, and Copacabra is going to give
- 41:47Speaker 10: you a lot, too. I love that line. I love
- 41:49Speaker 10: the fact those three guys are back together, and it's
- 41:52Speaker 10: all basically the head of the snake is number 27.
- 41:56Speaker 9: And Berkley Catton once again coming through tonight with one goal.
- 42:00Speaker 9: Was also plus one. Had one shot on goal. Certainly
- 42:02Speaker 9: made a count. Maybe struggled a bit in the face-off circle.
- 42:06Speaker 9: But again, the goal he scored at the right time.
- 42:09Speaker 9: That got this building going. That got the team into it.
- 42:12Speaker 9: They were into a rhythm. Following that and he scores
- 42:15Speaker 9: once again a very important goal to push his point
- 42:17Speaker 9: streak here to five consecutive games. Yanni Newman maybe was
- 42:21Speaker 9: pretty quiet here tonight and I thought he had a
- 42:23Speaker 9: great look back in period one. It was his only
- 42:25Speaker 9: shot on goal that he had in this game. But
- 42:27Speaker 9: eight minutes and 42 seconds. You're maybe not asking much
- 42:31Speaker 9: out of him being that it's his first game. The
- 42:33Speaker 9: end of the mix here. being called right back up
- 42:36Speaker 9: from AHO Coachella Valley. So, I mean, is it too early,
- 42:40Speaker 9: you think, to try to make any, you know, notions
- 42:43Speaker 9: as far as where he's at right now in this
- 42:45Speaker 9: game and where he can fit in this lineup with
- 42:47Speaker 9: Jared McCann out of the mix here for quite a while?
- 42:51Speaker 10: Yeah, you got to give him some time. I mean,
- 42:53Speaker 10: he comes up, he gets, you know, he's in the lineup. Listen, he's,
- 42:57Speaker 10: you know, to use a basketball term, he's a spot-up shooter,
- 42:59Speaker 10: you know, and if we're being honest, that's kind of
- 43:01Speaker 10: what McCann is as well. And so, you know, and
- 43:06Speaker 10: he's got an above average shot at the NHL level.
- 43:11Speaker 10: You know, he talked about working on his skating in
- 43:13Speaker 10: the offseason, and that was something that, you know, they
- 43:15Speaker 10: asked him to do. And, you know, I don't put
- 43:18Speaker 10: anything into one game with Yanni Newman. You know, you
- 43:21Speaker 10: need to score goals in the National Hockey League to win,
- 43:24Speaker 10: and tonight they needed five. Yanni Newman can score goals.
- 43:27Speaker 10: If nothing else, he can score goals. And you need
- 43:29Speaker 10: guys like that. And I think he's going to be
- 43:32Speaker 10: just fine. I really hate when people jump to, not you,
- 43:36Speaker 10: but just people jump to judgment so fast at times
- 43:41Speaker 10: with players. And Yanni's still a young guy finding himself,
- 43:44Speaker 10: but I think Lane will hopefully continue to trust him
- 43:48Speaker 10: and keep getting those chances. But Newman's going to put
- 43:51Speaker 10: the puck in the back of the net. It's going
- 43:52Speaker 10: to happen. He did it at a high level at
- 43:54Speaker 10: the AHL. He's going to do it here as well.
- 43:57Speaker 10: you know, I like the line combinations tonight. I think
- 43:59Speaker 10: you just stick with him and let him do his thing.
- 44:02Speaker 9: You know, Ian, something fun I thought that fans can
- 44:04Speaker 9: get a treat of here because the Leafs only roll
- 44:07Speaker 9: once into town per season to climb and pledge arena,
- 44:10Speaker 9: and we saw some future on display maybe, I think,
- 44:12Speaker 9: as you hinted earlier, not just with Berkley Catton, but
- 44:15Speaker 9: also with Gavin McKenna, and their big storyline was him
- 44:18Speaker 9: going to the top line, playing left wing with Austin Matthews.
- 44:22Speaker 9: He got three points out of the deal. Now, granted,
- 44:23Speaker 9: he got his cookies in the power play here, but
- 44:26Speaker 9: I mean, for a kid at 18 years of age,
- 44:29Speaker 9: what do you think that we saw may be here
- 44:31Speaker 9: for down the road for him?
- 44:34Speaker 10: Well, I mean, you saw the fact he could finish,
- 44:36Speaker 10: you know, and he could put the puck in. He's
- 44:38Speaker 10: a guy that can, you know, finish with no doubt.
- 44:39Speaker 10: He said something, Matthews, for the game-tying goal, a nice little,
- 44:43Speaker 10: you know, nice, neat and tidy three-point night for the 18-year-old.
- 44:47Speaker 10: I mean, there's a reason he was the number one
- 44:48Speaker 10: pick overall, and you saw that. Now, like, let's be honest.
- 44:51Speaker 10: He's playing with Austin Matthews. Like, that helps. on the
- 44:55Speaker 10: power play, as you said. He's got his cookies there.
- 44:58Speaker 10: I'm not going to diminish him either. He's an elite player.
- 45:03Speaker 10: You had to beat the Maple Leafs tonight for a
- 45:05Speaker 10: couple reasons. You wanted to close out the homestand. Wrong,
- 45:08Speaker 10: they did. Toronto's got a lot of injuries right now.
- 45:12Speaker 10: They are really down in terms of guys. When you've
- 45:16Speaker 10: got Tavares and Domi and Wood, you go through the
- 45:19Speaker 10: list of guys they have out. They're a little bit
- 45:23Speaker 10: beat up right now. You lose... You know, the other night,
- 45:26Speaker 10: you know, you lose the top power play goal scorer,
- 45:28Speaker 10: which is weird because he wouldn't have known that tonight
- 45:30Speaker 10: because they just, you know, are lethal on the power play.
- 45:33Speaker 10: The only time they did score is when they only
- 45:35Speaker 10: had a 22nd power play, but they scored on the
- 45:37Speaker 10: four-on-four right before that. So, you know, but, you know,
- 45:41Speaker 10: not having Merchenko hurt them. But, yeah, you know, Easton
- 45:44Speaker 10: Cowan's a young guy. He's 21 years old. He's a
- 45:47Speaker 10: really good player. You know, I'm excited. I think the
- 45:50Speaker 10: future of this league is really bright. We saw a
- 45:52Speaker 10: bunch of those young guys on display.
- 45:53Speaker 12: You know, I.
- 45:54Speaker 10: whether it be Shane or Berkeley and for Seattle. I mean,
- 45:58Speaker 10: Riker Evans scores again. He's still a young player. I mean,
- 46:02Speaker 10: there's a lot of youth that was on display tonight.
- 46:04Speaker 10: And then, in the end, it didn't matter because Austin
- 46:07Speaker 10: Matthews ties it. Brandon Montour ends up winning it, right?
- 46:09Speaker 10: The two veterans end up doing their thing. But what
- 46:12Speaker 10: a great– what just a great win. What a dramatic win.
- 46:15Speaker 10: What a fun win for the arena. The atmosphere tonight, honestly, Mike,
- 46:19Speaker 10: was fantastic too. So, yeah, it's a good night for
- 46:21Speaker 10: the Kraken. Good night all the way around.
- 46:23Speaker 9: 3-1, they finish here on the homestand. Before we let
- 46:26Speaker 9: you go, Ian, just to kind of call balls and
- 46:28Speaker 9: strikes on this one to you, what's the greater level
- 46:31Speaker 9: of concern as of this point with this team, defending
- 46:34Speaker 9: a third-period lead or the penalty kill?
- 46:39Speaker 10: Well, I'd say the penalty kill because the third period lead,
- 46:42Speaker 10: I think that's just a mindset. I think Lane will
- 46:44Speaker 10: get that change for those guys. I mean, they, you know,
- 46:47Speaker 10: we talked about it on TV, you know, JP said
- 46:49Speaker 10: to me right at the start of the 30 and
- 46:51Speaker 10: he's right. He's like, there's going to be a push. Like,
- 46:53Speaker 10: like Toronto is going to have a push. You just
- 46:55Speaker 10: know it's coming. And, you know, even I mentioned to
- 46:58Speaker 10: him on the broadcast, you know, we're doing the game.
- 46:59Speaker 10: I said, When it was four on four, I said, JT,
- 47:03Speaker 10: it feels like Seattle is approaching this four on four
- 47:05Speaker 10: like they're killing a penalty, like it's a five on four.
- 47:08Speaker 10: And we kind of agreed, sure enough, 30 seconds later,
- 47:12Speaker 10: the puck's in the back of the net. But I
- 47:15Speaker 10: think you could change that. I don't know what's wrong
- 47:17Speaker 10: with the penalty kill. It's really become a problem. Now,
- 47:23Speaker 10: let's also be honest. That first goal that they scored
- 47:27Speaker 10: on the power play that Toronto did, Seattle's I thought
- 47:30Speaker 10: it cleared the puck, and I think it hit Matthews
- 47:32Speaker 10: in the back of the helmet or something right on.
- 47:34Speaker 1: The way out.
- 47:35Speaker 9: They had two or three great chances to get that
- 47:37Speaker 9: puck out.
- 47:39Speaker 10: Yeah, just a bad balance. I mean, that happens, right?
- 47:42Speaker 10: You get bad balances sometimes. Stuff happens. So, you know,
- 47:45Speaker 10: I thought that was unlucky. But, you know, the guys
- 47:49Speaker 10: that are killing penalties are guys that you think are,
- 47:52Speaker 10: and I think they are good penalty killers, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 10: whether it be, you know, Goudreau or Myers or, you know, Winterton,
- 47:58Speaker 10: the guys up front that, you know, kind of grind away. I,
- 48:01Speaker 10: you know, I don't know, Schneekloff runs it, and Lane,
- 48:05Speaker 10: I mean, Aaron's a really good coach. So I don't think,
- 48:08Speaker 10: I think that'll come around. It needs to come around
- 48:10Speaker 10: pretty darn quick, though, because you can't just keep giving
- 48:12Speaker 10: up a power play goal or two every night. That's
- 48:15Speaker 10: just unacceptable, and it's not going to be sustainable either.
- 48:20Speaker 10: But the third period lead, I will be curious to
- 48:23Speaker 10: hear what Lane says. I I wonder if someone's going
- 48:25Speaker 10: to ask him about it or not, because I know
- 48:26Speaker 10: he's been a little bit short with that question when
- 48:29Speaker 10: it comes. But it probably will come tonight. At least
- 48:32Speaker 10: it should come tonight when we hear him in a
- 48:34Speaker 10: couple minutes. But listen, Mike, at the end of the day,
- 48:37Speaker 10: they don't ask how. They just ask what happened. You
- 48:39Speaker 10: got two points, a 3-1 homestand. You know, we put
- 48:44Speaker 10: together a piece of the pregame show on TV. The
- 48:49Speaker 10: one concern I think that's interesting is it feels like
- 48:52Speaker 10: they're kind of living on the edge right now in
- 48:55Speaker 10: terms of, like, when they win, it's like tonight. It's dramatic.
- 49:00Speaker 10: It's close. Damn, it's highly entertaining.
- 49:04Speaker 1: That's fun.
- 49:06Speaker 10: But it's close. When they lose, it's like what we
- 49:09Speaker 10: saw the other night. You know, like, it's not close.
- 49:12Speaker 10: The disparity is crazy. Most of your losses, you're scoring
- 49:16Speaker 10: a goal and that's it. They've got to find some
- 49:19Speaker 10: sort of happy ground and happy medium along the way.
- 49:22Speaker 10: Even with missing players, that's a good Toronto team, a
- 49:25Speaker 10: quality team. That's a two-time Pesina winner and a two-time
- 49:28Speaker 10: Stanley Cup champion goal. They beat him five times. That's
- 49:32Speaker 10: what I look at too. Berkeley keeps that point streak alive.
- 49:35Speaker 10: Five games now with a point for Berkeley Cat and
- 49:39Speaker 10: A bunch of guys with multiple points. And how about
- 49:41Speaker 10: the muzz-sop, huh? How about Josh Mahura?
- 49:44Speaker 9: He loves seeing the Maple Leafs, doesn't.
- 49:48Speaker 13: He?
- 49:48Speaker 10: I mean, I think I heard Brett say, who's the president,
- 49:51Speaker 10: Brett Festling, on a TV show on our studio panel.
- 49:54Speaker 10: I think Brett said that he's got three career goals
- 49:57Speaker 10: and all three against Toronto. Is that right?
- 49:59Speaker 1: Yes, correct.
- 50:00Speaker 9: He loves seeing the Maple Leafs.
- 50:03Speaker 10: Like, it's... Just tell him it's the Leafs every game.
- 50:08Speaker 10: The guy will be an 80-goal scorer. It's nuts.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Whatever it takes in this business.
- 50:16Speaker 10: That was a hell of a goal, too. Not just
- 50:19Speaker 10: the finish. Really, if we're being honest, the heavy work
- 50:23Speaker 10: was him jumping up. What a beautiful pass that Myers
- 50:26Speaker 10: feathered over there, right? I don't know. We're still in
- 50:32Speaker 10: the entertainment business. And that was entertaining tonight. That was
- 50:36Speaker 10: really entertaining tonight. And I love everything about it except
- 50:39Speaker 10: for the fact you'd rather not see a lead get blown.
- 50:42Speaker 10: You'd rather not see that happen. We all get that.
- 50:46Speaker 10: But if you can say, hey, we're going to draw
- 50:49Speaker 10: up a script. We're not going to tell you how.
- 50:52Speaker 10: We're going to draw up a script. And Seattle's going
- 50:55Speaker 10: to win the game in the waiting seconds with 30
- 50:57Speaker 10: seconds to go. I'll take that every day. I'm in.
- 51:01Speaker 10: I'm taking it. I'm signing up for it. I'm enjoying it.
- 51:04Speaker 10: Play a little Foo Fighters. Cue up a few Foo
- 51:05Speaker 10: Fighters afterwards, huh? Times like these. Here we go. Have
- 51:09Speaker 10: some fun. Eat the fish. Big win. Thank you for coming.
- 51:13Speaker 9: I will crank up Foo Fighters in this car in
- 51:15Speaker 9: about roughly 10 minutes once we're all done here. But
- 51:17Speaker 9: before that, Lane Lambert joins us. Mayor, drive back home safely.
- 51:21Speaker 9: Great work once again. Appreciate you.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Thank you, man.
- 51:25Speaker 10: Mikey, you might be doing radio tomorrow. I think I
- 51:27Speaker 10: might have pulled a softie and lost my voice. But, yeah,
- 51:30Speaker 10: I'll see you tomorrow. Oh, no.
- 51:32Speaker 9: Well, you had the softie thing going on here. I
- 51:34Speaker 9: think my computer has a softie going on at this point.
- 51:37Speaker 9: It was falling apart with the keyboard. Now I got
- 51:40Speaker 9: some mouse issues. So we're trying to fly by the
- 51:42Speaker 9: seat of our pants to get this thing here into
- 51:44Speaker 9: the homestretch. But we will do it.
- 51:46Speaker 1: You were great. You're always great.
- 51:48Speaker 9: Ian, thank you very much here for joining us. That's
- 51:50Speaker 9: Ian Ferdows joining us. on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Very
- 51:53Speaker 9: quick check right now, the Tacoma Dodge text line, 49451.
- 51:58Speaker 9: From the 425, you say the Kraken blow a third
- 52:01Speaker 9: period lead. Well, maybe take a shot, but at least
- 52:05Speaker 9: Brandon Montour stopped another OT. Now from the 425, reaction
- 52:09Speaker 9: here from the 564. Looking like Bertley Catton is proving
- 52:14Speaker 9: the 564 wrong. And go down the list here for
- 52:17Speaker 9: the 314. Just saying a horrible game by Sergei Bobrovsky.
- 52:22Speaker 9: He maybe bailed the Kraken out, and maybe Vince Dunn
- 52:24Speaker 9: as well, who kind of gave some space to Austin
- 52:26Speaker 9: Matthews on that goal.
- 52:28Speaker 1: That from the 3-1-4.
- 52:30Speaker 9: I certainly see where maybe at 6-on-5 you're looking for
- 52:33Speaker 9: better coverage, especially on a guy like that. But a
- 52:36Speaker 9: few shots that surprisingly beat Bobrovsky that maybe you're seeing
- 52:40Speaker 9: handled by him earlier in his day. He definitely had
- 52:43Speaker 9: a shaky game, but the Kraken certainly taking advantage of that.
- 52:48Speaker 9: I asked on Twitter, by the way, in X, give
- 52:50Speaker 9: me your thoughts on this game maybe in one sentence.
- 52:53Speaker 9: And we get one here from the Scary Cats saying
- 52:56Speaker 9: the Hockey Gods willed this victory into existence. Mattia saying
- 53:01Speaker 9: absolute cinema. Joel saying third period might be the biggest
- 53:04Speaker 9: worst enemy here for this team. It's got to get
- 53:07Speaker 9: figured out here. Same thing here from Christopher Davis.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Two points.
- 53:11Speaker 9: It's nice, but you've got to figure out the third period.
- 53:13Speaker 9: We get one here from SBellman523. Maybe this defense needs
- 53:19Speaker 9: someone like Simon Edmondson here. Maybe take maybe an overture
- 53:23Speaker 9: at Dylan Larkin, too. You've got to stop taking penalties.
- 53:26Speaker 9: The penalty kill needs some work here, but net-wise, a
- 53:29Speaker 9: great win. Great homestand. That from Espelman, 5-2-3. All right,
- 53:33Speaker 9: we'll take a break here. Reaction from Lane Lambert is
- 53:36Speaker 9: right around the corner as the Kraken beat the Leafs 5-4,
- 53:39Speaker 9: closing out the homestand at 3-1 here on Talking Kraken
- 53:42Speaker 9: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 53:45Speaker 2: If you've got a comment about tonight's Kraken game, make
- 53:48Speaker 2: sure we hear about it. Just text us at 49451.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Now back to Talking Kraken with Mike Benton on Sports
- 53:56Speaker 2: Radio 93.3 KJRFM.
- 54:00Speaker 9: Kraken beat the Leafs 5-4 as they get the first
- 54:03Speaker 9: matchup of the season. One more matchup coming up. That will,
- 54:05Speaker 9: of course, be in Toronto as the Kraken improve to
- 54:08Speaker 9: 8-4 and 1. The Leafs now 7-6 and 2. Mike
- 54:11Speaker 9: Benton with you back at Tom's Watch Bar. We go
- 54:13Speaker 9: right back across the street to Climate Pledge Arena and
- 54:17Speaker 9: downstairs now for more reaction with Kraken head coach, Lane Lambert.
- 54:22Speaker 24: Lane, what did you think of your team's performance tonight
- 54:24Speaker 24: just in general? I thought it was pretty good. I
- 54:27Speaker 24: think we chart 5. five-on-five scoring chances against. Our zone
- 54:31Speaker 24: time was way down in terms of D zone. I
- 54:37Speaker 24: think that we were hard to play against for the
- 54:41Speaker 24: most part, and I thought we played a good hockey game.
- 54:44Speaker 24: You started multiple periods with your fourth line and your
- 54:47Speaker 24: third pair. On the second period, they come out and
- 54:49Speaker 24: score 16 seconds in. When you send them out, what
- 54:52Speaker 24: is the What is the hope there? Are they setting
- 54:54Speaker 24: the tone? Are you sending them out to score a goal?
- 54:57Speaker 24: What are you hoping to see happen?
- 54:58Speaker 26: Well, I get less change, so they started their fourth line.
- 55:01Speaker 26: So it's a matchup thing. And, you know, with our
- 55:06Speaker 26: fourth line, there's all kinds of hopes there. You know, momentum, score, defend.
- 55:12Speaker 26: You know, we think we have a pretty good fourth line.
- 55:14Speaker 26: So that was the theory behind it, but it was
- 55:18Speaker 26: a matchup thing.
- 55:19Speaker 24: You talked last game about offense generation. What did you
- 55:22Speaker 24: think of it tonight?
- 55:26Speaker 1: I thought it was better.
- 55:28Speaker 26: I mean, in terms of how we played and how
- 55:32Speaker 26: I thought how sound we were defensively for the most part,
- 55:35Speaker 26: five on five, I think we generated some pretty decent
- 55:39Speaker 26: chances offensively. It was a low event hockey game. It
- 55:44Speaker 26: was not.
- 55:48Speaker 1: That's not a.
- 55:48Speaker 26: Bad thing for us. I thought we generated some chances,
- 55:52Speaker 26: but I thought we kept it low event for a reason.
- 55:55Speaker 26: They've got some dynamic players over there. Five on five,
- 56:00Speaker 26: we were the better hockey team. I think that our
- 56:04Speaker 26: penalty killing, we've got to do something there to fix that.
- 56:10Speaker 26: We can't keep getting scored on like that. Four on
- 56:13Speaker 26: four goal, we lost coverage. And then a six on
- 56:17Speaker 26: five goal at the end, which, you know, I mean,
- 56:19Speaker 26: there's a, there's a goal scorer doing his thing. Um,
- 56:24Speaker 26: and that's just the way it goes, you know? So, um,
- 56:27Speaker 26: five on five, I liked our game a lot.
- 56:30Speaker 10: Lane, Josh Mahara just seems to have a thing for
- 56:32Speaker 10: scoring against Toronto.
- 56:33Speaker 1: What did you see from him in his game tonight?
- 56:35Speaker 1: You know, obviously gets the goal, but what did you
- 56:36Speaker 1: make of his entire effort?
- 56:38Speaker 26: Yeah, I think he's just been playing hard, uh, doing
- 56:41Speaker 26: his job. He tries to do the right things.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Um, Keeps it simple.
- 56:45Speaker 26: And he does a good job of joining the rush
- 56:47Speaker 26: at the right times.
- 56:49Speaker 1: And obviously he got rewarded.
- 56:50Speaker 26: It's a heck of a play, you know, right from
- 56:52Speaker 26: the very beginning on the breakout and the wall play.
- 56:55Speaker 26: And then Benny made a nice play on the two-on-one.
- 56:56Speaker 26: It was a great goal for us.
- 56:59Speaker 11: Coach, you wanted to build your identity. Yes, it's a
- 57:04Speaker 11: mystery voice.
- 57:05Speaker 24: Yeah, there you go.
- 57:07Speaker 1: I know the voice.
- 57:08Speaker 11: On tight defense, you've been winning with prolific– offense, do
- 57:15Speaker 11: you care how you win as long as you win?
- 57:19Speaker 26: Well, a win's a win's a win. And clearly, like
- 57:24Speaker 26: I said, I care about, I'll never ever discredit a win,
- 57:30Speaker 26: but certainly I care about our five-on-five game. I care
- 57:34Speaker 26: about our defensive play in terms of how much time.
- 57:36Speaker 26: That's why I was pleased with the game tonight.
- 57:38Speaker 11: The other thing about the third period was Riker Evans
- 57:42Speaker 11: put a puck on goal from 130 feet out for
- 57:46Speaker 11: the first 19 minutes of the third period. That was
- 57:49Speaker 11: the only Kraken shot on goal. Would you, in retrospect,
- 57:55Speaker 11: like to see the team be more aggressive or assertive,
- 57:59Speaker 11: whatever you call it, instead of sitting back once you
- 58:03Speaker 11: develop a lead?
- 58:04Speaker 26: Yeah, I think that, you know, you'd always like to
- 58:07Speaker 26: see it a little bit, for sure. I'm not going
- 58:09Speaker 26: to say no. You know, we'd love to have a
- 58:13Speaker 26: few more shots and things like that. But I thought
- 58:15Speaker 26: we were really sound. They didn't get a scoring chance
- 58:18Speaker 26: five on five in the third period. Let me just
- 58:19Speaker 26: put it that way.
- 58:23Speaker 9: That reaction from Kraken head coach Lane Lambert. So there
- 58:25Speaker 9: you go. You're going right back here to the focus
- 58:28Speaker 9: of five on five play. And while the Kraken did
- 58:30Speaker 9: once again give up a third period lead, again, plenty
- 58:33Speaker 9: of issues as far as the penalty killing, a four
- 58:35Speaker 9: on four goal. That's where the focus is going right
- 58:38Speaker 9: now to try to get a few things done. tweak
- 58:41Speaker 9: but at five on five you're not too dissatisfied here
- 58:44Speaker 9: with the effort you certainly take it especially how things
- 58:47Speaker 9: can be very hairy and very chaotic with mistakes and
- 58:50Speaker 9: sloppy play at this portion of the season but definitely
- 58:54Speaker 9: the Kraken maybe you're looking for a greater push if
- 58:56Speaker 9: you're putting it that way as far as trying to
- 58:58Speaker 9: close out games when they are ahead. Nonetheless as Lane
- 59:02Speaker 9: Lambert said a win's a win and the Kraken turn
- 59:04Speaker 9: their attention now to the Calgary Flames who lost tonight
- 59:07Speaker 9: 4-0 against Edmonton and until the 14th of November, 7
- 59:12Speaker 9: of 8, they are playing right now on the road. So,
- 59:15Speaker 9: Calgary have their four-game winning streak upended, and the Kraken
- 59:19Speaker 9: will try to make it 3-0 in this head-to-head series,
- 59:22Speaker 9: and facing a team that may be gaining a little
- 59:24Speaker 9: bit more confidence in the recent going, Devin Cooley a
- 59:27Speaker 9: big part of that. He came into today, by the way,
- 59:30Speaker 9: Amongst the lead leaders, 9-1-5 save percentage. And their special
- 59:35Speaker 9: team certainly getting better. Power play fourth best in the NHL,
- 59:38Speaker 9: so the penalty kill may be as a test ahead
- 59:40Speaker 9: of them. And the Flames PK fifth in the NHL
- 59:45Speaker 9: entering today. But still having some issues trying to keep
- 59:47Speaker 9: the puck out of their own net right now. They
- 59:49Speaker 9: came into today, by the way, next to last in
- 59:51Speaker 9: the NHL, 3.7 goals per game. That's our next broadcast. Again,
- 59:56Speaker 9: Kraken at Calgary, face-offs at 5, airtime 4.30, live watch
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: party right back here at Tom's Watch Bar. We certainly
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: hope that you can join us on the Global Credit
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: Union Kraken Audio Network. Our thanks to Travis Moger, our
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: technical director again, our on-site engineer, Terry Ryan, and that
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: will do it for all of us, for all of
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: you here, by the way. Big thanks also to the
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: staff at Tom's Watch Bar and certainly for your reactions.
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: Big thank you to also Ian Furness for joining us.
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: And this is Mike Benton saying goodnight from Climate Pledge Arena.
- 1:00:26Speaker 9: And from Tom's Watch Bar, we thank you for joining us.
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: Your final score, once again, Kraken 5, Maple Leafs 4.
- 1:00:33Speaker 9: This is Tuck and Kraken on 93.3 KJRFM.
