- 0:00Hey, everybody, Dando here. Hope you all had a fantastic holiday break
- 0:03and New Year's. We had an amazing time here in the Dando household over
- 0:07the last couple of weeks. It was just great. Now the kids are
- 0:10right into Santy, you know, they're three and five now, Holly in,
- 0:12Elliott right into Santa Claus well behaved. Can you believe it? And
- 0:17it was. It was just amazing though, in particular getting to spend time
- 0:20with Alliot because he hasn't me going to Dake. Everything's been shut down.
- 0:23I get to spend a lot of time with Alliott before he starts school.
- 0:26He starts school the end of this month. Can you believe it? Longtime
- 0:29listeners of this pod, you know, Elliot didn't even exist when the show
- 0:31started. And now the little bugger's about to go to school. Can you
- 0:35believe it? Guys, I'm going to be the parent of a child going
- 0:38to school. Dano, the parent of a child going to school. He's
- 0:41not bothered, he's excited. I'm scared. I'm you know, I'm just
- 0:44anxious. I'm just I don't know, it's just my little man's going to
- 0:47school. So, as I said, it was just great getting to take
- 0:49a couple of weeks off and just spend some time with the little man.
- 0:53We won't be returning to a regular program until next week, as you can
- 0:56probably tell from the title of this podcast, but we will be key off
- 1:00with a bang next week because every month now we're going to be going back
- 1:03and revisiting a classic episode of The Simpsons, because Guy, as you're well
- 1:06aware, was not around for the first ten seasons of the show. In
- 1:10the past, we've been going back and doing Guy on Springfield reviews for our
- 1:12Patreon, but now we're just be doing it every month, maybe a couple
- 1:17of months, depending on how we're feeling, going back and revisiting a classic
- 1:19episode. And we thought we start off with one of my favorite episodes of
- 1:22all time. It's Homer the Great I know right, one of the best
- 1:25episodes ever and it was so much fun to record. That. One's actually
- 1:27available right now early in ad free on our Patreon, so if you want
- 1:32to support the show, you can get access to that right now, as
- 1:34well as all the other exclusive podcasts we do up on there. But until
- 1:38then, though, I'm gonna be throwing up for you guys. This week
- 1:40A sneak peek at our recent Movie Guys review where we were joined by Mitch.
- 1:45Mitch now joins us for All the Movie Guys podcast once again, and
- 1:48for the first time ever, we're all in the same room and you could
- 1:51really tell the vibe, the energy. It was back baby, and the
- 1:56patrons voted for us to review Jingle All the Way. One of my suggestions.
- 2:00Each month we throw out two. I threw out two, Mitch throws
- 2:02out two, and Guy throws out two titles under a particular theme, and
- 2:07the patrons get to vote on which movie we do, and they generally choose
- 2:09mind because I feel like I'm on the same wavelength with our listeners, with
- 2:13all of you guys out there, and you guys voted for all the patrons
- 2:15voted for Jingle All the Way, which I was very happy with, and
- 2:17the actual review goes for around two hours. It was so much fun.
- 2:22But you know, obviously this is just gonna be a sneak peak, won't
- 2:23be the full episode if you want to get the full episode, as well
- 2:27as all the other Movie Guys podcasts, and as I said, all the
- 2:29other Slizzy stuff we do. I'm just gonna be a supporter of ours on
- 2:31Patreon. Another movie Guys we did recently was another one of my favorite movies
- 2:36of all time, Space jam I don't write how exciting is that? So
- 2:39you actually got to hear us talking about space Sham, which was a lot
- 2:43of fun as well. But there's plenty of movie guys reviews up on our
- 2:46Patreon. But yeah, again, guys, I've said this to you so
- 2:50many times in the past, with thank you so much for all of your
- 2:52support. I feel like I've grown with you guys. You know, as
- 2:55I was saying earlier a couple of months ago, that Elliott didn't exists before
- 3:00this show started, and now he's going to school. I'm just I've gone
- 3:02from a crazy little kid to a parent of a school child. And you
- 3:07know, it means so much to me that you guys have supported us for
- 3:10so long, because it means I was able to take a pun to myself.
- 3:14Last year was actually over a year ago now it was twenty twenty two,
- 3:16and turn this into my job, into my career. I pinched myself
- 3:21every morning that this is my job, but it wouldn't be possible about support
- 3:24of each and every one of you. And that's why I'm always chilling myself
- 3:29with the Patreon. But yeah, I just thank you so much for listening
- 3:30to the show over the last eight plus years, almost nine years now,
- 3:35Absolute legends, each and every one of you. Honestly believe me, if
- 3:38you're listening to this, I thank you. It really means a lot to
- 3:40me. But yeah, I hope you enjoy this little sneak peek at Jingle
- 3:44All the Way. We shall be returning next week with our review of Home
- 3:46of the Great which is already available early in ad free. As I said,
- 3:50I've on our Patreon, and we're going to be doing plenty of more
- 3:53exciting new things here in the fourthing of Discount Network in twenty twenty four.
- 3:55Lots of exciting new podcasts are going to be starting. I can't wait.
- 3:59You're going to love what we've got in store for you, guys. But
- 4:00for now, sit back and enjoy our little steave peak at our recent movie
- 4:03guy's review of Jingle All the Way. Have you ever bought or rented a
- 4:08videotape that wasn't quite right? It may have been a pirate copy and the
- 4:14leg and now our feature presentation. Can I kick off by telling people what
- 4:48happened when I was greeted at the house. What firstly, it's been a
- 4:50while since I've been here, and hello everyone, I mitched for those that
- 4:54knew our listeners to the show, firstly, you've got duel friends doormats.
- 5:00That threw me for a hour, although it did also help because it's been
- 5:04a while since I've been here, and which house is Dando's? And yep,
- 5:09how you doing? That works? And then as I was wiping my
- 5:11feet on how you do? And I saw it's like that's central perk that
- 5:14sitting beneath it and lifted it up and sure enough, yes, uh but
- 5:17the bit can never have too many friends, ah wholesome. The bit that
- 5:23threw me was I came in I needed to do a Wii before starting the
- 5:27recording. Now it's bedtime, obviously, so when the door was originally opened,
- 5:30it was like just hushed tones and I was looked at like scum for
- 5:34having the audacity to have knocked. How dare you so with that's whats pants?
- 5:42It's after eight o'clock, This motherfucker's knocking. Do you have a warrant?
- 5:50Quick marriage? I asked to use the toilet and Dando it turns out
- 5:56that had no toilet paper. Dando's first thing was to Nikola, can you
- 5:59please get some tissues or the box of tissues? That was get the tissue
- 6:02box, which was excited. I genuinely thought it was going to be a
- 6:06noise issue. I was like, does he want me to we into the
- 6:09tissue box? Like, is that is that where we're at? Is my
- 6:13two messins splashing into the bowl going to be too loud for your kids to
- 6:15sleep? That's that you're doing that Howard Stern thing where he's talking about how
- 6:21he went on and he wanted to impress his girlfriend. This this would be
- 6:26girlfriend. So there was like a little like a little bucket next to the
- 6:29doors only so we filled that and like jumped out the doors. I was
- 6:31like, oh my god, this guy must be huge. That's fantastic,
- 6:40that's so good. That's actually reminded me of I mean, in hindsight,
- 6:44probably a racist joke now, but of take us back to the good old
- 6:49days then West Indian we were quoting a lot of Eddie Murphy without doing a
- 6:55full set up. It was too West Indian cricketers end up having a whizz
- 6:59off of the yes off of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and one of them
- 7:02I think in this in the joke it was know, well, let's say
- 7:06it was Curtly Ambrose ridges in Curly Ambrose and so that on the harbor Bridge
- 7:11having a wee and Curtly turns to Viv and says, Jesus, the water
- 7:15is cold, and Viv says, not very deep either. I've heard that
- 7:19one before. I heard it in the old traditional, nineteen nineties racist Australian
- 7:25way though. Yeah, mine was that was printed. That was in a
- 7:30Max Walker joke book. Really, yeah, joke books. I am not
- 7:33surprised they still do joke books. I imagine you would. You would find
- 7:38them at the post office. Yeah, and be pocket size, wouldn't they.
- 7:42Yeah? Anyway, how are we? Let's just start this we hit
- 7:46a record, a review of jingle all the way? How are we all
- 7:48doing? Gentlemen? First time? And we actually worked this out since before
- 7:51COVID, we haven't all been in the same room together pre COVID. Once
- 7:56upon a time in Hollywood at Guy's house was the last time we were in
- 7:59the same room that was really close to COVID, wasn't it. It was?
- 8:01That was the end of twenty nineteen, yeah, or the beginning of
- 8:05twenty twenty one of the two, Yeah, because I know that when the
- 8:07I think the Watchables did a live review of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
- 8:11and one of them got COVID or something during the review, So like there
- 8:13must have been a really close crossover there. I'll see when it came out
- 8:18Upon a Time? When was that this? If you can guess, guy,
- 8:20I think, well, I'm not sure about the day, but I'm
- 8:22pretty sure it was the end of twenty nineteen, twenty nineteen. It says
- 8:24say the month fifth August, fifteenth August. Yeah, okay, it was
- 8:28a mid year one, wasn't It was a summertime release. Yeah, that
- 8:31means yeah, right, So that was right after me coming back from our
- 8:35Europe trip. Like one of the first things I did when getting back to
- 8:39Australia was apparently leave Ash behind to go to the movies with Tom. You
- 8:41had enough of her well a month, it's a pretty solid amount of time
- 8:46to only be seen like go to the three Hours you shouldn't have twice?
- 8:56Wait sure you watch all of those credits, then go see end all right,
- 9:01jingle all the way gentlemen. But before we get into that, I
- 9:03just wanted to just discuss what are we up to? What's someone doing for
- 9:07Christmas this year? That's a very good question. I know that I'll be
- 9:13going down to. This is very gelong centric content, as I say,
- 9:16our global network of listeners, but going down to the coastal town of bow
- 9:20and Heads, smugt Mary's that where she lives. No, no, I'm
- 9:24still here. But my elder sister Joanne lives down there, and she's got
- 9:28a new decking on the outside and a little bit of redecoration all over,
- 9:31so that only calls you piggy or whatever she does. Indeed, he's family
- 9:35calling piggy. And this was not a way issue because I was not always
- 9:39well fed, particularly pink one day. Did you get too much sun?
- 9:43There? Is that? I mean, I am prone not to tan.
- 9:46Were you a little slimy? I think it might have been a Lord of
- 9:50the Flies. So someone scratched your glasses. Yeah, I tried to steal
- 9:56the consent. I got thrown off a cliff. Life was tough in the
- 10:00Davis household. That fucked up, by the way. Lord of Fly Yeah,
- 10:03I know it's based in the book obviously, but like I'm watching the
- 10:05kid going, what I read this great? They killed him? This great?
- 10:11Take a drink, folks, because it's whenever guy says I read this
- 10:13great through on Twitter, that's I have. William Golding thought, you know,
- 10:18teenage boys were savages, so we wrote a whole book about it called
- 10:20Lord of the Flyers. And then there was this article about these boys who
- 10:24actually got shipwrecked, and you know they built like a gym out of you
- 10:28know, rocks and sticks, and you know. It was the first ever
- 10:33season of Love Islands. Pretty much this was f boy Island, except no
- 10:37chicks were getting effed. But no, I mean they all looked out for
- 10:41one another. One kid broke his leg and everyone looked out looked out for
- 10:45him. I mean Golden was like, oh, it's just a descent in
- 10:48the savagery human beings around was like, dude's rock. Yeah, sure,
- 10:52kings. I mean, I like the idea of still wanting to maintain your
- 10:58suspense of physic fitness. It feels like you would just get enough of that
- 11:01through living off the land in on the like in general, well, it's
- 11:05that Tom Hanks Castaway diet. Yeah, coconut water and raw fish. Yeah,
- 11:09yeah, you unrequired love for Helen Hunt and all that kind of stuff.
- 11:13Unrequired love for Helen Hunt sustained a lot of men through the late nineties.
- 11:18Yeah, when did it? When did we run out of love for
- 11:20Helen Hunt? Though? I think the minute she won the Oscar. I
- 11:22was going to say, when the man shake came in and I no longer
- 11:24needed to use her as a meal replacement. So she won the Oscar?
- 11:30And what that was? Good? Nineties? Yeah? Yeah, okay,
- 11:33what she win the Oscar for? As good as it gets? Did Nicholson
- 11:35win it as well? For that? Yeah? Yeah? The Best Picture
- 11:37they did it? No, no, no, this is yeah ninety eight
- 11:41but it was ninety seven movie. Yeah, nine seven movie. Okay,
- 11:46it's one of those films. I remember watched that. Everyone talked. I
- 11:48watched it about a year ago. I remember enjoying it. I don't necessarily
- 11:50remember thinking there's two Best Picture winners. No, no, it's not Top
- 11:54top Shop James L. Brooks wasn't it got one for Best Supporting? I
- 12:00remember Greg Kenney. Yeah, that I remember is what they did win three?
- 12:03No, no, he got nominated. I think he was actually really
- 12:05good. He definitely should have won it in my opinion. But what was
- 12:09he going up against? Did we know Roan and Juliet that getting them?
- 12:13None? So we look up ninety eight oscars, right that best Supporting?
- 12:18Just look it up, all right? So Robin Williams good be hunting of
- 12:22course? Uh yeah, great? Was it gets but Reynolds, Boogie Knights,
- 12:26Anthony Hopkins Amastad and Robert Forster Jackie Brown did Did either Matt or Ben
- 12:31get a Best Acting? I think I think Damon did? Did he o
- 12:35Best Actor? I think he got a nomination? Yeah, let's look,
- 12:39I'm just curious who Nicholson beat out that year when Jack Nicholson, it's a
- 12:46it was a weird line up because I was what I listened to the Boogie
- 12:48Knights Rewatchables, Yeah, and they were talking about ninety seven and now it
- 12:52was Damon Hoffman for Wag the Dog, Peter Fonder for ULI's goal and for
- 12:56the Apostle. Yeah, it was like, that's a that's a chaotic line.
- 13:00Yeah, it is watch Fag the Dog. But it had a really
- 13:03bad audio mix. It was just a DVD that wasn't fantastic. So it
- 13:05was yeah, my only experience of watching Wag the Dog was one of coming
- 13:11away with mild befuddlement, of just being like, I see that there's an
- 13:15idea of a movie in this, but I'm not entirely sure what I just
- 13:18watched. This is what most people feel when they watch The Whale. I
- 13:20still didn't watch The Whale. Okay, yeah, I mean it's weird.
- 13:24I like Brendon Fraser and I like Darren Alosky. I guess I just hate
- 13:26fat people. I don't know. I saw a trailer for it, and
- 13:35like Gilbert Grape never never got to you. Shallow Hell, though, bona
- 13:39fide classic. That was fake fat. This is this is a repret but
- 13:45it was real fat, fake fake skinny had Jason Alexander with a tail in
- 13:48it, right, Yeah, yeah, thats one. That's something we all
- 13:52lived through. He just couldn't quite nail any role that was decent after sign
- 13:58felt goody or before or outside. But this is just and as I have
- 14:07said many times, he is very good in the nineteen eighties horror movie The
- 14:11Burning. Always talk about this legitimately you say it's a great movie, right,
- 14:15or He's not a legitimately great movie. It's a pretty good horror movie.
- 14:18But he just does he escape from the burning by throwing an old woman
- 14:20to the grounds, kids to the side. Given that he's one of the
- 14:26few people who actually survives, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
- 14:30Alright, he what Jingle all the Way? Mitch? Start us off?
- 14:33What were your earliest memories of Jingle all the Way? So numb?
- 14:35I did not watch Jingle all the Way when it came out. The first
- 14:39time that I would have seen this movie was I don't know, somewhere in
- 14:43the last five years. Really that lay Yeah, just I never cared one
- 14:48ioda about this movie. It was something that Ash had watched and it was
- 14:52a bit of a nostalgia trip for her to watch. When we first sat
- 14:56down and watched it a few years ago. That was the only time that
- 14:58I've seen it up until watching it again for this review. It's weird because
- 15:01I remember it being on like every summer at Christmas time, like Channel seven
- 15:05possibly, but I'm also really good at not getting knocked out during Wham mcgeddon,
- 15:07so things that are really popular around Christmas time I tend to slip under.
- 15:13Yeah, please explain Wammageddon to me. I know of it, but
- 15:16I had to go the month of December without hearing Last Christmas by Wham.
- 15:20Oh I hate that song. Yeah, Nicol puts it on all the time.
- 15:24It came close. Earlier today, I walked into a store and they
- 15:28were playing Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul as Wings or just McCarthy. I think
- 15:33that was just McCartney. So I heard that and I high tailed it out
- 15:37of there. I thought, if that's on the playoffs, then Wham won't
- 15:39be far away. Yeah, Nicola always because that's huge in the UK.
- 15:41They fucking love that song and Christmas Last Christmas. Yeah, I did both
- 15:46of them, but more Last Christmas. And I'm just like, I don't
- 15:48get it. This is a shit song. So it doesn't feel like a
- 15:52Christmas song. It says Christmas, it doesn't make it a Christmas song.
- 15:54I know, we say Diehard at Christmas movie, so I'm about to say
- 15:58similar things about Christmas move movies as we go along in this podcast. Yeah,
- 16:02but it's just like this doesn't have the Christmas. That's almost the Christmas
- 16:04vibe at all in my opinion. It's sad love song that fuck it.
- 16:08Yeah, but yeah, so what I would have been eight or nine.
- 16:12Did this get a ninety six release in Australia? Was it would? Yeah?
- 16:18It took five weeks to make. They just slapped this together. I
- 16:19was gonna say it was thrown together so quickly. I don't know why it
- 16:23wouldn't have mattered to me as a kid, because I mean, obviously you're
- 16:26aware of I'm Schwartznegger. I've been to movie World. I was the movie
- 16:30would have to do with it? Oh, actually Batman Robin would have come
- 16:34like, did they have a terminator thing at movie World? No? No,
- 16:37no, no, no, all right? Nothing more recently you go
- 16:44to movie World there's a terminator thing? Is it not? Yeah? This
- 16:48was the last time I went to Movie World there was a terminator thing.
- 16:51There was no It might not have lasted for a long time, but there
- 16:53was a term. Didn't make the Terminator? I've seen it in Australia.
- 17:00It's a live action terminator? Was it a planet? Hollywood? Do we
- 17:04have a planet? Hollywood? We did just that, the Endo skeleton,
- 17:08the window that amongst you. I swear that they didn't make it right.
- 17:12Who made Terminated? Which? Which production company wasn't warning? Was it?
- 17:15No? They may have got the rights at something. It was Fox because
- 17:19it's on Disney Plus must be It must be Fox, isn't it. No?
- 17:25The original is Hemdale production through Oryan. T two is a parco production
- 17:30through TriStar try Star. This one says Paramount Pictures, and then for the
- 17:34first one and then the third one. I don't know if Warner Brothers might
- 17:38have had international distribution on on one of them, unless because they have a
- 17:44three D cinema Movie World, but I don't think that was ever. I
- 17:47think the first one, this wasn't a ride. This was enacted out.
- 17:49Yeah, they have it at Universal Studios in America. Maybe that's where're getting
- 17:53confused, because you went to Universal Studios. Yeah, but I did so
- 17:57many places, so many parties. It doesn't matter. There must be someone
- 18:00else out there that's seen this. But it's weird because because I think it
- 18:03was in a weird phase of his career at this point, wasn't he He
- 18:07was kind of on the way I'm going on a second terminated to two three
- 18:10D show at Universal Studios, Hollywood, Yes, but yeah, also at
- 18:14Warner Brothers Movie World on the Gold Coast. Yeah, and yeah, it
- 18:18cool was done here yeah, okay, there we go. Thank you to
- 18:21Parks dot Com do I U yeah, I remember that Nod's legit. See
- 18:26we went in because we went when it first opened and it was like a
- 18:30brand new thing. It was Marvin the Martian four D. Then it became
- 18:33Shrek four D. I think it for a while, and then now it's
- 18:36something else. I don't know at the cinema movie world. But Arnie's career
- 18:40at this point in time, well, yeah, I mean this is ninety
- 18:41six and Arnold in ninety six has got the well I better say the one
- 18:45two punch, but it's a bit sort of it's not a great body blow
- 18:51in it's a swing and a miss of a raser and jingle of the way.
- 18:56Now. One thing I think Animal was prided for or best known for,
- 19:03maybe not best known for, but certainly known for at the height of
- 19:06his career was he worked with really good filmmakers. I mean he would work
- 19:10with Paul Verhove, and he worked with James Cameron clearly a lot of times,
- 19:14John mctinnan on Predator, and unlike Stilly, the directors may apply,
- 19:21but he wasn't sort of throwing his weight around all that much. He was
- 19:23willing to collaborate with her with you know, sort of high end talented people.
- 19:27And when you look at who's behind the camera on both a Razor and
- 19:30Jingle all the Way, I mean Brian Levan, who did Jingle all the
- 19:33Way. He's best known for like Beethoven and the Flintstones, these sort of
- 19:37amiable but kind of junkie family comedies and erasers by a guy called Chuck Russell,
- 19:41who's you know, he did one of the Elm Street sequels. He
- 19:45made a really good remake of the Blob. But yeah, he did the
- 19:49Mask. Yeah, but you can tell that the bloom is coming off the
- 19:52rose just a little bit. You can sort of you can always feel it
- 19:56when someone's not quite at the top of the game anymore. And yeah,
- 20:00I mean, oh, look he's still Arnold, and I mean he's still
- 20:03got name value and face value. You've seen on the post, you're probably
- 20:07going to go and see it. I mean, both the movies did pretty
- 20:08well, but it's like, I think we're a little bit away from Terminator
- 20:12to Total Recall. We're a little way away from the glory days. It's
- 20:15true, lies had been maybe a couple of years before it's a bad run
- 20:18that he's on here, and not only this. It actually surprised me because
- 20:22even as recently as the mid two thousands, before the Governor Run, if
- 20:26Schwarzenegg was in a movie that was going to be enough to drum up excitement.
- 20:29But ninety four True Lies, as you say, that's probably the last,
- 20:33the last good movie that he's made, and I've got a soft spot
- 20:37for was Genesis, the most recent terminator from Memory, Dark Fate, Dark
- 20:41Fate, whichever one that Linda came back for. Yeah, I do like
- 20:44that one who usually in mind are too many now? Yeah, But so
- 20:48from True Lies we go junior commercial success but critical nothing isn't making a good
- 20:53movie then achieved what it was that to do right, Well, they're trying
- 20:59to recap of the whole Swarzeninga de Vito Twins Magic, Okay, so that's
- 21:03why he's pregnant. I've one I was going to say that movie is successful
- 21:07because of his prior successes, not as a standalone. If that, if
- 21:10what had come before hadn't happened, I don't see Twins making a huge amount
- 21:14of money when you can still put names on a poster in Celticus. Yeah,
- 21:17so as a raiser jingle all the way Batman and Robin End of Days,
- 21:21End of Days. Yeah, collateral damage. And then we get into
- 21:25a period where there's a bunch of Terminator sequels and acting becomes much more separated.
- 21:30It turns into cameos in the Expendables. He almost became a meme,
- 21:33didn't he ya a while the Last Stand, which is a bit of a
- 21:36nothing movie politics, so that's why. Yeah, yeah, there's that,
- 21:40But it also just as one of those things that when you think of the
- 21:42legacy of the guy, you you would hope that he would be able to
- 21:47make his like Unforgiven or something like that. That would be cool if he
- 21:51did King Conan, which is a project that's been talked about for ages.
- 21:53I mean, I think that would be fantastic, like his Last Hurrah.
- 21:56Yeah, like a real good action movie to go out on, because I
- 22:00mean, do you feel like Maggie might have been an attempt at something like
- 22:03that that just didn't land. Maybe. I mean there's a lot of movies
- 22:07that that from no one really knows about that he's sort of trying different things,
- 22:11and that after burn or after math where I think his family is killed
- 22:18in like a terrorist bomb is it's a bit like collateral damage, but it's
- 22:22played a lot more for drama than it is for actual action, and he's
- 22:23trying to do some legit acting in it. I think, really, now
- 22:27you've got him as kind of like the Elder Statesman and the self help Guru,
- 22:33and his book will be useful as out he's cameo and Walking Tall.
- 22:37Actually, as I think through the later years where there's a Walking Tall,
- 22:41the Rundown or Welcome to the Jungle, the Jungle sorry one with the Rock
- 22:45and it's great. Yeah, yeah, I mean it's called the Rundown in
- 22:48the in the States and Welcome to the Jungle here. But yeah, I
- 22:52think you're right. I wish The Rock had worked more with Sean Williams Scott
- 22:56and not so much with Ryan Reynolds. Well does he work much with Ryan
- 23:00Reynolds except that up in when you had a cameo in Hobbs and sure,
- 23:07I think he's popped up in a couple of other Rock things as a combo
- 23:11maybe, but as a solo. Who do I want to see on the
- 23:12screen more? It's Ryan Reynolds. But how did the public perceive Arnie at
- 23:18this point ninety six. Oh, look, I think he's part of the
- 23:19furniture at this stage. But you're reviewing by this point, right, I
- 23:22was. It was Hollywood like, he's the personification of the studio of studio
- 23:29movies, movie of the put your name on the poster and people will come
- 23:33to see was he was he the top name. I wouldn't say the top
- 23:37was Willis up there probably actually, yeah, because I mean this is around
- 23:41the time of sixth it's post pulp fiction, yeah, pre sixth sense Mageddon.
- 23:47Yeah, yeah, I was actually part of what I was thinking about
- 23:51about that career of Arnold, And it probably can't be spoken about just in
- 23:55isolation of going what happened to Arnold, But this would have been a bit
- 23:57of a changing in the guard of Hollywood in tern of the types of action
- 24:00movies that were being made. That the one man tank was not the m
- 24:06O anymore. It's more like aged team up called big explosions, actions,
- 24:11a lots of stuff, speed, getting a lot of ensembles. And yeah,
- 24:15you're also seeing a newer guards start to come in. I mean,
- 24:18yeah, Keanu obviously, I mean he's got point break at the start of
- 24:21the start of the nineties, Speed in the middle, Will Smith is definitely
- 24:25coming up, and yeah, I think by the time you get to the
- 24:27matrix, Yeah, and you realize, oh, well, okay, we
- 24:33can take an everyday actor like Keano, make him train for six months,
- 24:37you know, and man, we'll do a little bit of wire work as
- 24:40well. I mean, you cannot discount the impact that Asian cinema had on
- 24:44Hollywood filmmaking, particularly in Hollywood action filmmaking. You had a lot of directors
- 24:48like John wu Ringo, Lamb's Choy Hauk coming over and making Hollywood movies.
- 24:52So yeah, I mean, big brawny action vehicles like Arnold and Sylvester's Loan,
- 24:59Bestes and four were becoming kind of dinosaurs, which is you know,
- 25:03I think why Arnold, who's a very very smart man and very very sort
- 25:07of savvy about his image, realized well, I've got to expand a bit.
- 25:10I've got to expand my range such as it is. Eddie Murphy was
- 25:14kind of doing the same thing. I know, he wasn't a big,
- 25:15huge star, but he was doing more comedy family comedies at this point as
- 25:18well. I think when did Dr Doolittle come that was ninety nine. I
- 25:21reckon it was ninety eight or maybe two thousand two of them, right,
- 25:23yeah, yeah, there was a sequel. I would you say that professor
- 25:26was not a professor? Was that? That wasn't a family comedy? Was
- 25:29it? That was still that was still a bit talling? Ye? Yeah,
- 25:32I don't know if it was rated PG thirteen. I don't know if
- 25:36there's many F bombs dropped in or anything like that. I want to say
- 25:40this era of Eddie would this had been Golden Child, and that's late eighties.
- 25:44It was Metro Metros around this time, Metro both thing it was ninety
- 25:47nine. I want to say, oh yeah, yeah, I was gonna
- 25:48say so Metro, like Eddie was still playing in the action pool a little
- 25:52bit. Metro was probably the the top of my head. That might have
- 25:56been the most action, least comedy of an Eddie most reasons performance around this
- 26:00time of year, yeah, around this time of history. Yeah. But
- 26:03I mean when it comes to like jingle all the way, it's like,
- 26:07oh, well, this feels like that you are the kind of thing you
- 26:11could slot anybody in a lot of the comedies that Arnold had made up until
- 26:14this point, well, I mean there aren't that many, but I mean
- 26:17Twins is very dependent on the fact that he looks like Ernold Schwartznegger and his
- 26:19twins played by Dan Kindergarten Cop. It's not necessarily fine. I don't think
- 26:29he's really good in it. And the fact, you know, putting this
- 26:30huge slab of tetotic meat up against these against these little kids is the capacity
- 26:37girl run. It's the jew that's the jaw, And that's where I learned
- 26:41that boys have penises and girls have vaginas. You have to unload. It's
- 26:45twenty twenty three to get bike broke down. And you know, even Junior,
- 26:51to some extenter's like it's he's pregnant. I just I looked at the
- 26:56person and I was like, I can't see this being a good movie.
- 26:57I can't remember as single joke from it. Really. Yeah, I don't
- 27:00think I've bothered to revisit it in the Oh shit, what thirty years it's
- 27:07since it's come out, coming up on thirty years, coming up on thirty
- 27:10years. Yeah, helping you a criterion, Well, when was last Action
- 27:15Hero? That's ninety three, and that was probably, yeah, the first
- 27:18chink in the armor for him really because yeah, I mean he's coming off
- 27:26three two Predator running Man lies true. His post his last action recals ninety
- 27:34Terminator two is ninety two ninety one? Was it? Yeah? Yeah,
- 27:38So I was riding high. And I think they were so confident because I
- 27:42mean, this is, you know, an action comedy from the director of
- 27:45die Hard starring Arnold. I think they put it up against Jurassic Park,
- 27:48and they're pretty confident it's going to go toe to toe with it, and
- 27:51it just got you know, it's asshanded to it. More of it.
- 27:55Was that a comedy more than an action film. But it was breaking the
- 27:57fourth floor kind of, wasn't it breaking it's wall. It's very very usual
- 28:03film. No. I mean the action that it actually is really good because
- 28:07I like it's ambition. I've got a real soft spots actually loves a strong
- 28:11word, but you love when you were a kid, maybe definitely loved it
- 28:15as a kid. I would still I would get entertainment out of watching it.
- 28:18Now it's not going to be I think it would outstay It's welcome if
- 28:22I wore it too often. But I would also if it was like three
- 28:26beers in Oh, You've never seen Last Action Hero and your arm Sworsnegger fans,
- 28:29sit down here, chuck this three stouts in as you rocked up with
- 28:32some stouts. Yeah, but I mean it's one of those movies that you
- 28:37know, a couple of decades down the line, people are going better than
- 28:42you remember. It's yeah, I mean, Mitch is right. It's got
- 28:45a lot of ambition. Yeah, and a lot of really cool looking animated
- 28:51cat a lot of cool in jokes for the movie nerds. So those movies
- 28:55don't never the best alone starring in Terminator. Yeah, like he's walking there
- 29:00a blockbuster and there's a I know the movie for people that have God's going
- 29:04to explaining the movie too. I'm sorry, man, but no explaining to
- 29:10the listeners though for those who haven't seen it, not anymore. We just
- 29:11did. That's fine. I was trying to And then I thought I was
- 29:15so excited this afternoon because I was scanning some old family photos for Christmas presents.
- 29:18Right, I found a photo of me when I would have been about
- 29:21I know, six or seven, in my bedroom with a Last Action Hero
- 29:25cardboard cut out of Arnie, just listening to some Spotify Yea, but yeah,
- 29:30a cardboard cutout of Arnie from Last Action Here I got at school.
- 29:32Mum said she got it from the video store standing up or laying down in
- 29:34bed with you know, he was standing up. I finished my business.
- 29:41Yeah, but I mean, looking at the trailers for this, the promo
- 29:47for it, I don't know. I think even the well, I mean,
- 29:51I don't want to I was in the twenties of this stage, and
- 29:52I'm probably a great Christmas comedy. Was he like at the level where people
- 29:57I feel like the rock now everyone's kind of sick of him verging on it?
- 30:03Quite possibly? Yeah, I think Batman and Robin might have been one
- 30:07of the nails in the coffin for that absolute Is that because of the movie
- 30:11though, or the way he was in that movie? I think just the
- 30:12movie because actually he's one of the best things in it. I watched with
- 30:17Elliott. I'm like, he's actually got some funny like he makes he guess
- 30:21the ship and doesn't make a gold but he makes it work to an extent.
- 30:23Him and Uma Thurman sort of know what movie they're in exactly. Yeah,
- 30:27Clooney and everyone else not so much. The way he says do I
- 30:32say he's he's campy at Ship the Cooler. Yeah, well this is vaudeville,
- 30:37of course. Yeah. Yeah, you're played in the back row.
- 30:38Good on you because Donald's trying to be all serious about Robin in the background.
- 30:42No, forget how moody Chris O'donald was, Oh so moody. I'm
- 30:47like, what are you doing? He sucked in Batman Room. I quite
- 30:49liked him in Batman Forever. Yeah. Yeah, that whole thing with the
- 30:52laundry. I mean the logy was very cool. People meme that and say,
- 30:56oh god, this is so weak. I'm like, what are you
- 30:57kidding? This is dope. Yeah. I love him doing laundry and that
- 31:03remember the laundry six seconds he sort of does some gymnastic tricks to ring out
- 31:07the acrobatic. Yeah, Alfred's just left impressed. Who's this twink master Bruce's
- 31:18new protege, which is one where he gets like attacked by like putty thugs
- 31:22and it's all like Neon and Ship in the alleyway. That is that Forever?
- 31:25Or is that those two Shoemaker Batman movies just merging one. They're all
- 31:30on all the time. I think so much bisexual lighting. Allo Aliott loves
- 31:33them, and that's exactly what those films were supposed to do. That's fine.
- 31:37Yeah, I'm sorry that sounded a really bad. That's fine. Child
- 31:41likes and you would have loved the two when you were a kid, right
- 31:45ah yeah, I assume, like, yes, I remember being I remember
- 31:51enjoying the movie. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, I think looking at
- 31:55the at the trailer, for I do think even as a tenure old or
- 32:00whatever, nine year old, I knew that mister Freeze was lame. I
- 32:04actually think that if there's one thing that I had a problem with is that
- 32:07you were talking about vaudeville and playing in the back row. I was sophisticated
- 32:14enough to know that was bad acting, not sophisticated enough to know that it
- 32:17was a form of acting. So for me, I kind of walked away.
- 32:21Oh god, they've really hammed that year old Mitch walks out. Yeah,
- 32:24Like, for me, hammy acting was not not you know, it's
- 32:30a quote or paraphrase because I probably won't get it word for word, but
- 32:34reservoir dogs like you know, if you're not a great actor, you're bullshit
- 32:37or like, yeah, anything short of great acting is bullshit. And I
- 32:40was walking out of there not saying it's bullshita again. I was a kid,
- 32:44but I was like, hmm, well, I don't know how I
- 32:45feel about this. I was just going to say I remember this. This
- 32:49was definitely VHS rental for me. I don't remember it being in the cinemas
- 32:51at all in Australia. I can't recall like it because remember when space came
- 32:54up, kids out, I wouldn't but I don't remember it reviewed it.
- 32:58I don't remember it being a thing we all went to the movies to see
- 33:00Jingle all the way. I remember seeing it at like the video start going
- 33:02ah, it's Almos sports nigger, like if from kindergarten cop. I'll probably
- 33:06liked this movie. But it was one thing I remember when I was a
- 33:08kid, though, was I was always confused how there was never like any
- 33:10Turboman action figures. And I know they did make some apparently that were released
- 33:15in the States, like two hundred thousand units or something, which isn't much
- 33:17when you can see a big movies these days. It was like the Batman
- 33:20and Robin and that we're talking about just then. But it's like for a
- 33:22film that feels like it's based around this toy, they didn't seem to have
- 33:27their shit together when it came to the marketing. I guess that's a victim
- 33:30of the fact that it was stuck together in five weeks and there wasn't enough
- 33:32time. Because I did read that there wasn't enough time to do any tie
- 33:36ins like Space Mpy with the tazos and like Batman Robin did with the McDonald's
- 33:39glasses and things like that, So there was no tie ins. But yeah,
- 33:42you think a film like this was based around his action figure, there
- 33:45would have been more of them, especially when the whole story of the movie
- 33:49is that you can't get this action figure and everybody wants to turb and everyone,
- 33:53all the kids watching it, you would assume would then want one.
- 33:57You would think that, wouldn't you. So yeah, it feels like an
- 33:59absolute case of that's about to say ball dropping. Let's say drop the ball
- 34:02instead. You guys just picked up you phones at the same time, I
- 34:06was looking for the release date, the local the Austranger state the way.
- 34:08Yeah, both Witch and I are just completely bored with what you're saying.
- 34:13I was sending a dick pic to guy. I was like, are they
- 34:15just like having a conversation he had. He had to send it in two
- 34:20stage file too big. The pixel. The pixel has the ability to take
- 34:25a screenshot and scroll at the same time. I know. I was looking
- 34:30up the gross. So sixty million domestic six million, that went twenty yeah
- 34:34back, yeah, but it costs seventy five middle mat and twenty of that
- 34:37goes when that goes to Arnold twenty yeah. Apparently that was twenty yeah.
- 34:43Okay, Like we said, savvy businessman knows he's worth I mean, if
- 34:46we're talking about Arnold and comedy is I was the same before we he called,
- 34:50but he is worth that though, that'd make one hundred twenty one million
- 34:52of volence. Worsneker's not in this movie. Yeah, I'm trying to remember
- 34:55who the first twenty million dollar also man was. Take his salary out.
- 35:00They don't spend fifty five on it if he's not either, Like this movie
- 35:05becomes a fifteen million becomes ing all the way through it to make fifty Yeah.
- 35:08I think the first one may have been Jim Carrey. I think so
- 35:12for cable guy. Was a cable guy was not dumb and dumber earning that
- 35:15much money. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was for cable guys. I
- 35:16know he had a funck left Dom dumber and jeff Eniel's got nothing for it
- 35:20basically compared to not not cable guy money. Well, you get twenty millis
- 35:23for cable guy. Was pretty sure what was because and then everyone says,
- 35:28Carrie's getting twenty million, I want twenty million. Yeah, if he's getting
- 35:30it him the cable guy Jones is like, I can't sanction this before but
- 35:43I mean, yeah, Arnold was already making fairly solid paydays. He was
- 35:45getting a lot of back end money. And yeah, I think I was
- 35:47saying before we started recording about the origins of Twins that he made with Ivan
- 35:53Reidman a genius. He was a genius. He was indeed a genius.
- 35:58Uh how ow Reightman, Arnold and Danny de Vitea owned forty percent of the
- 36:06movie. It's like, we're not going to take any money up front.
- 36:08We will take the bareest amount of money up front. But we owned forty
- 36:13percent of the movie. And I don't say it was one of the best
- 36:15financial decisions ever made, because first of all, it made money at the
- 36:19cinema. It was like, yeah, well we got to cut when they
- 36:21sold it to we got a cut of every big as that sold. We
- 36:23got to cut when they sold a TV to airlines everything. So they're just
- 36:28making money hand over this from it. Yeah, and real Christian Columbus was
- 36:30attached to this as well. Yeah, yeah, the producer, I mean
- 36:32under his fourteen ninety two Pictures name, because that's when Christopher Columbus discovered America,
- 36:38which I think, yeah from us And now everyone's going, yeah,
- 36:44we don't like Christopher Columbus. He was a colonizer and a sex pest.
- 36:51Was really problematic on the set of Home Alone. Yeah, that'll do,
- 36:55thank you, which would also stout fire, but that was going to run.
- 37:00That would have stepped on the story I was about to tell. I
- 37:04so rewatched the original trailer for this. Yeah, from the director of Missus
- 37:08Doubtfire. I was like, that's just straight up lying to the public,
- 37:12like, yes, he's a producer on the movie. But they were from
- 37:15the director of Beethoven and from the director like not brought to you by from
- 37:20the director of Missus Doubtfire. I was. It stopped me in my tracks
- 37:22for a second, was like, Christal Clumbus fucking direct this And then Yeah.
- 37:27That was truthfully, that to me a massive red flag that they knew
- 37:31that they had a piece of shit on their hat. Also the fact that
- 37:35they had to use the home Alone music in this trailer to get people.
- 37:37Did you notice that? Yeah? Yeah, I was like, I was
- 37:39like, that's the that's at one point that did Yes, So they played
- 37:47someone at the very start of this trailer. I'm like, just I can
- 37:51imagine they did that to get people's attention because people would automatically gone home Alone
- 37:54three because you hear that music and you think I'm alone, and you would
- 37:58think, what four years after ninety two may it could have been a home
- 38:00Alone three. Yeah. Anyway, just I just thought it was interested in
- 38:02that because they cuished Columbus, they used show up used a Home Alone because
- 38:06no either movie would have been allowed to use that music, right, I
- 38:07imagine not. But I mean, I don't know. Stuff gets repurposed all
- 38:10the time. There's a lot of stuff by James Horner that gets used in
- 38:14the different trailers of the time. A lot of I need to I've just
- 38:20brought something up. You don't You're just like, I wasn't looking at you
- 38:24when I gave you a second I was trying to get the right way to
- 38:29phrase it, and but you snooze, you lose man. I'm looking at
- 38:32the I'm looking at the box office takes, and there's just a really interesting
- 38:36time of the world that there's a couple of things that happened from one week
- 38:40to the next. So the week that Jingle All the Way comes out debuts
- 38:43at number four, the top five star Trek First Contact with forty three million,
- 38:49Space Jam at number two. Of course it will just Shire twenty two,
- 38:52Ransom at number three, g It back by Jingle all the Way at
- 38:54four, Ransom really stands out there as like in amongst all that dark,
- 39:00gritty thriller about we didn't mention, Gipsy Gibson was still huge and he was,
- 39:04yeah, that's true. Well he's hot off rave part. Yeah.
- 39:07There's a few other like Romeo and Juliet's up there, the English Patriot,
- 39:10the English Patient, Independence stays still floating around. Impossible. Oh yeah.
- 39:15Spoken about the Tom Cruise Factor Top five Action Stars of the ninety five to
- 39:20two thousand era. So Swartznegger would say Sportsnegger, I wouldn't say swartz Nigger
- 39:24ninety five to two thousand no, I would say he's I mean Cruise,
- 39:30Well, Cruise is still just staring that period Gibson, Nicholas, Cage travolt
- 39:36They Volta had broken Arrow General's daughter, which isn't necessarily an action movie more
- 39:44more more a thriller. Yeah, yeah, face off within the cage Brse.
- 39:49Yeah, look, i'd even throw I wouldn't necessarily say Van dam and
- 39:54segoul will Smith. We said Will Smith before he had a few action movies,
- 39:58and that he's ninety six is in Pennance Day and that's the real sort
- 40:01of action movie breakout. Sorry, bad boys, bad boys. Yeah as
- 40:07well. Anyway, Yeah, that digression back to the original aggression. This
- 40:10is the bit that I was curious about, and I don't think this happens
- 40:13very much anymore. Dalmatians one hundred and one Dalmatians. The week that this
- 40:19movie releases opens at I don't know if it opened, but it's had eleven
- 40:22and a half million first week. Yeah, come into the following week,
- 40:25it goes from eleven million to pulling in thirty eight million with a second factors
- 40:34holidays being one. That school is that the movie they had the Tians they
- 40:37had to McDonald's tying. I remember thee hundred one dimations and it had the
- 40:38animated series as well, which helped boost right, and I don't have school
- 40:43holidays. Sorry, I don't know if it was week one week two,
- 40:45but like that, just word of mouth and the fact that you could only
- 40:47see stuff at the movies, like that shit pre Internet world. They opened
- 40:52a movie now and it opened at that level and they were expecting it to
- 40:55be at the other level. Then it's just straight to streaming and pulled out
- 40:59of theaters. Boat yeah, exactly, well right now, it's so weird.
- 41:01I mean I was looking at the top five US box office for the
- 41:06last weekend and it's completely chaotic because I mean, like the top thing is
- 41:12I think the top thing is like a Migazaki movie, like a Japanese animated
- 41:15movie. I think The Boy and the Heron. Yeah, but like Godzilla
- 41:20minus one it was like number three. But you can't go by just box
- 41:22office takings. Now you're gonna go by streaming numbers as well. There's that
- 41:24too, but I mean those numbers are always fun, but it's like if
- 41:29people are paying for it, though, can I get those numbers? You
- 41:30know when you say, like a rental for example, like for example,
- 41:34Barbie. Right, yeah, if it's a rental, they're nice. That's
- 41:37what I'm just saying, because Barbie was available pretty much as soon as the
- 41:38cinema, you know what, I mean, absolutely, But I mean I
- 41:42think it's just kind of unprecedented that at least two Japanese movies are in the
- 41:45top five of the US box office, you know, as as we approach
- 41:49Christmas. The parasite help that you reckon, I think it probably would have
- 41:53opened a lot of people, a lot of the general public eye to subtiple
- 41:59the diversity of Asian cinema, I mean parasites Koreen and probably yeah, thank
- 42:02you for pointing that out. You probably can't a lot of the Miyazaki stuffs
- 42:07on Netflix, isn't it, So his audience has probably grown. Yeah.
- 42:10Plus it's got a really interesting, you know, voice English boys cast.
- 42:14I think Robert Pattinson's one of the leads and as well. I mean not
- 42:15that that necessarily makes a difference, but you know, it just goes to
- 42:19show that theatrical takings are just kind of a wild were straight now, I'm
- 42:24just earner to bring up parasite. Obviously, it was Korean. But it's
- 42:28like subtitle movies. People aren't going to pay to see that shit in ninety
- 42:30ninety six, not a chance, No, not really. I mean you'll
- 42:37have the odd sort of art house sensation run all the run, for instance,
- 42:42but they're not necessarily going to be box office to put money down if
- 42:45I was allowed into the theater. Well that's true for which one, Betty
- 42:47Blue, No, you're right, I don't. I feel like watching movies
- 42:52with subtitles is probably I wouldn't call it mainstream, but it's more palatable,
- 42:57so it doesn't feel odd like once again to the point that I maybe even
- 43:01things like Loopin' or what the money money host money Heist, that is what
- 43:07it's called, Which is the one about the Going Up the Tower? It's
- 43:12that's something. It's basically an action movie going up the Tower. But the
- 43:15great thereat apart. Yeah, yeah, that's fucking amazing. Yes. So
- 43:21yeah, there's been some really popular movies that have broken through, and a
- 43:22lot of those has probably been released in a dubbed version as well. But
- 43:25I'm very much at a point that I hate the dub I would much rather
- 43:30as a squid game. I started watching I watched the first episode, not
- 43:31realizing you could watch it, just just watch it. I was like,
- 43:35what is this yere? And then I obviously went back and watched the original
- 43:39version, yet much better. But so, guys, with jingle all the
- 43:42way, what did you like about the film? Something I dug about it
- 43:45was I don't know. I think it does a pretty good job of capturing
- 43:49like the manic spirit of Christmas consumerism. Yeah, well, this came out
- 43:53just at the same time as the Tickle Me Almo craze. You can remember
- 43:55that, surely the Tickle Me Almo craze of the ninety six I want my
- 44:00sister wanted one, but I remember them just everyone had to have it to
- 44:01me, I reckon my younger brother. Actually, I'm thinking of Ferbi's I
- 44:06don't think they have hadbies were a thing, but the same same kind of
- 44:07deal. Yeah, yeah, I think like Sickle Me Alm, I probably
- 44:12missed this, but yes, you're right, and that same thing. We've
- 44:14all had a thing like that that blew up that everyone Turtle's power angels,
- 44:17that kind of thing. Yeah, and you're right it did sort of capture
- 44:20that's just the chaos of things. Yes, But I mean so I think
- 44:22that's probably, for mine, the best thing about it, because I mean,
- 44:24if you're looking at it with say a wanky critical lie, this movie
- 44:30is basically the equivalent of turmaan Dole. It's something you really dig when you're
- 44:32six years old. You may be forgotten by the time you were eight years
- 44:36old, and then you know, ten years down the line, you go,
- 44:38oh, the toy that I was really cool, so or that was
- 44:43kind of nice. But uh yeah, I think that's what I like about
- 44:46it the most. I mean, it's it's kind of it's clumsy, and
- 44:51it's clunky, but it's also kind of unpretentious. Sorry, that's what sounds
- 44:54really ranky to say that, or pretentious to say that. Chris Chris Columbus
- 44:59has said that he felt the movie was misunderstood because he wanted the film to
- 45:02be a piss take of the commercialization of Christmas, right where people go watched
- 45:06it and went, this is just trying to sell a toy, and he's
- 45:07like, well, no, because we've fucking hardly made any We're meant to
- 45:09be taking the mickey out of movies that do that. But people just seem
- 45:14to not get that. Is that his fault yes, yeah, yes.
- 45:16In short, Chris, I don't think the movie was misunderstood. I just
- 45:20don't think it did a good enough job of hitting that point. Yeah,
- 45:22I would say that. Yeah. I mean I read a bit of stuff
- 45:27about Brian Levant, who directed this, and he was saying, look,
- 45:30I realized, I don't make, you know, movies that make the top
- 45:31ten critics list at the end of the year. But I see a lot
- 45:35of families taking my movies off the shelf at Blockbuster, and that means a
- 45:38great deal to me. So, I mean, this is a workaday guy.
- 45:40Again he started hold money. I found that quote as well, and
- 45:45I love the idea of Brian Levant hanging out in a Blockbuster it and then
- 45:52just a notepad. One. Hey, if you like Problem Child, you
- 45:55might like Problem Child too, directed by one Brian. But I mean this,
- 46:00this is a sitcom guy. This is a guy who sort of got
- 46:02his start on you know, things like Happy Days and Morgan Mindy. I
- 46:06think it was Happy Days, but he certainly got a background that kind of
- 46:08thing, and that that kind of shows. I mean this is not high
- 46:12art or anything like that, but I mean it gets the job done in
- 46:15certain ways. It's got to wake it on at Christmas time and the kids
- 46:16will sit there and watch it. That's correct, while you leave the room
- 46:20and do something else. Stick around. But the thing is, though,
- 46:23with the whole year, don't leave the room, because otherwise you're Howard Langston.
- 46:27Yes, that's right, But the thing is, I feel like this
- 46:30doesn't happen anymore, the whole tick of Melmo craze and furbies and things like
- 46:32that. Two reasons, online shopping and b I just think that manufacturers have
- 46:38just become savvy enough now to understand this movie's design to sell toys. Let's
- 46:42fucking make a lot of them. Yeah, don't don't make me say the
- 46:45line. Line, say the line, but the shoemaker line about you know,
- 46:50yeah, the movies make millions, the toys make billions. Yeah,
- 46:52and yeah, this is where Chris Columbus fumbled. Yeah, I mean,
- 46:57well, is it his fault though, because they gave him five weeks to
- 46:59get it out by no member started filming in April and three of those weeks.
- 47:01Three of those weeks were on the parade scene, so it took two
- 47:05weeks to film the rest of the movie. Parade scenes a long scene it
- 47:07goes for about Yeah, it's half an hour. It's a third of the
- 47:12movie because I initially chose that because when we dissected dicet Hi, we're talking
- 47:15about a particular scene, are chosen a scene, and I was like,
- 47:17I'll choose a prod me that message before I had watched it, and I
- 47:20was like, holy shit, a five hour I rewatched it and I was
- 47:23like, oh, this isn't the scene, it's the movie. But yeah,
- 47:31I enjoyed the film long rivalry between Arnold or Howard and the cop.
- 47:38I thought the cop was played by a man named that's Robert Conrad. Robert
- 47:43we mentioned once upon a time in Hollywood before next thing, you know,
- 47:45you're getting your ass kicked by Bob Conrad and his tape pants. He was
- 47:51hilarious again, I mean, he was sort of like a TV tough guy,
- 47:53his notes, how long he was on various you know, cop shows,
- 47:57Westerns, all that kind of thing. And he's probably in his late
- 47:59six these, maybe even early seventies at this stage. But it's one of
- 48:02those you again, Yeah, it's one of those like you know, like
- 48:08in Flying High, we've got Leslie Nielson and Peter Graves and all those like
- 48:12Robert Stack and all those guys who were in TV cop shows and all that,
- 48:15and they're playing against their image and he's sort of doing that here,
- 48:17and he's been very game with it. I appreciate that he's kind of like,
- 48:22what Ham, it's that kind of beformance called that out of the fire.
- 48:29But I nearly leapt at the table when you brought up Flying High in
- 48:31the same sentence. Is this not you take flying You take my Flying High's
- 48:40name out your goddamn mouse. Apparently that saved their marriage. Ja I went
- 48:51home and smoked a joint and watched the bridges. They went to their separate
- 48:55homes, they got on z they went to the separate wings of the city
- 49:00that they owned. No, Jada Pinker apparently has gone public again, and
- 49:06so I just knew that he loved me. If to be slapp the shit
- 49:08out of Chris Rocket, if you can't take those guys seriously anymore, it's
- 49:12a shame because I'd loved Will Smith and it's just like, yeah, I
- 49:15I mean, look, the the main thing for me from the movie,
- 49:21and it'll be the MVP as well. Not to get in the way of
- 49:22it, but I'm sure it'll be Everyone's MVP is Phil Harty, so we'll
- 49:24say the MVP is Phil. Yeah. There's an amazing quote though that I
- 49:29wanted to like to talk about why I enjoyed him in there. This came
- 49:32from an e W article that I found, but it was really really good
- 49:36about Phil. The last film that was released Wapped. He'll still with us
- 49:42Yadyada from Ken Tucker. His conventional guy's demeanor and deep hearty voice for his
- 49:47secret weapons. With them, he could momentarily full audiences in the thinking he
- 49:52was a straight man, but then he'd cock an eyebrow and give his voice
- 49:53an ironic lilt that delivered a punchline like a fast slider. You barely saw
- 49:58it coming until you started laughing. And I feel like that applies to everything
- 50:01Phil Hartmon has ever done. I think that quote was more around the movie,
- 50:05but that's just his career. That's writing from ten from Aman Kentucker.
- 50:09Yeah, because I mean, I won't say that there was nothing that Phil
- 50:12couldn't do, but I mean it was the Simpsons changed when Phil was no
- 50:16longer, when Lionel Hartson Field like he brought something that they just haven't seemed
- 50:21to be able to recapture. You know, it's a damn shame, but
- 50:27you know so many things about Phil harmon Or. I've got a lot to
- 50:30talk about with the MVP and everything like this. He's just great. Plus,
- 50:34I've chosen the cookie scene. What scene have you chosen for your scene?
- 50:37I've chosen where Howard goes to the Santa Ware with Belushi with James Belushi.
- 50:43Is it's a it's a Red Heat reunion. Yes, And you've gone
- 50:45with which one the last night like the last minute sales pitch the customer number
- 50:52one number one customer? You've got like slash dislikes here. Yeah, I've
- 50:59can't say one more like I like everyone's disdain for Booster. That was actually
- 51:04very fun. They just hated Booster and he was I love that he was
- 51:07a dick as well. So well that that that's Curtis Armstrong Revenge of the
- 51:12Nerds. I was really surprised at that. Yeah, I mean it's been
- 51:15a long time since I've seen Jingle all the way and even the kids just
- 51:19like beat up. That was probably the I would like a whole movie with
- 51:22that kind of tone. That felt sort of Simpson's esque. And yeah,
- 51:28I mean yeah, I mean, if we're going to we'll get into dislikes
- 51:30a little bit later on doing the moment. Yeah, yeah, but I
- 51:32mean but that scene and yeah and that yeah, just everyone's disdained boosters and
- 51:38offering him the booster toy and laughing at his face. By the way,
- 51:43I mean a lot of I wouln't necessarily say cameos, but early appearances by
- 51:47semi familiar faces. One of the one of the guys at that at the
- 51:52First Apartment store, the guy. It's Chris Parnell. He's an SNL cast
- 51:55member. He was on thirty Rock, and he's a voice on Archer Doctor
- 52:00Spaceman, and he did Doctor Spaceman, and he's been a bunch of movies
- 52:04as well. I mean not to draw too long a bow here, but
- 52:07I would say he is almost a worthy success at Phil Hartman, Yeah,
- 52:13I would. He is a guy who looks very straight but has just under
- 52:21and can play very straight and sincere but has underlying weirdness and can also play
- 52:24smarm me very well. Can step into any comic project and deliver as well.
- 52:32Like he's what are they like the thirteen percenters, the guys that improve
- 52:36anything around them by five tool player, perhaps five tool players, A five
- 52:43player. I don't know idea what that is. They can do just a
- 52:45bad anything. Are you trying to sport? Am I trying to support it?
- 52:49He's Timmer tool man, Taylor dislikes. Tell us what you didn't like?
- 52:52Match? I'm sure I'm looking. Look at his list, it's a
- 52:59shindless list. Let I assume guy, that you're going to talk about tone
- 53:02and the inconsistency of tone. I am inde you're gonna talk about I'm gonna
- 53:06let you do that first, and then that'll lead into me. Okay,
- 53:08well, let's bring up how much compared to flying High again? Let's get
- 53:12mied it. They opened this door, they'll never sleep again. Well,
- 53:23I mentioned before when I was talking about my likes, how it captures this
- 53:25manic spirit of your consumerism. Maybe one of my problems with it is that
- 53:30it's not manic enough. I think this, I mean, like my dream
- 53:35version this would be directed by like maybe the likes of Barry Solomon Felm or
- 53:40Joe Dante. You would have a little more sort of Looney Tunes energy to
- 53:44it. It met him black, didn't he? Yeah, he could go
- 53:46the other way about the two guys behind Uncut Gems. Oh my god,
- 53:50the Safeties. Yeah, that was manic. That was that was intense.
- 53:54I needed to have a rest after watching the movie. Yeah, I was
- 53:59exhausted. And then when it I was like, what no spoilers of course
- 54:04recently had someone put Uncut Gems without any idea what it was? That was
- 54:08staying ashes compolution guy guy through ten years on top of me and not and
- 54:19like from Country Australia, not a movie fan. It's like, dam Sad,
- 54:22I don't put that on. And like I saw this look come over
- 54:24his face about two minutes in and I was like, I should warn you
- 54:29this is a pretty intense movie. It's like, is it good? I'm
- 54:31like, it's fucking excellent, but just reset your expectations now I get it.
- 54:38He's dead anyway. Uh yeah, I mean it's cartoonish and it's broad
- 54:51and all that, but it's it's sort of it seems to be operating it
- 54:54like maybe sixty percent. It's not quite manic. I blame Sinbad for this.
- 55:00Simbad's in my dislike I feel like him and Arnold. I just couldn't
- 55:05buy the chemistry I feel like. So there was in my notes, I
- 55:09came across the fact that Joe Pesci was the original for that and some of
- 55:15the speeches that Simbad has felt like Leo Getz, and I was like,
- 55:20oh, man, I could imagine Joe Peshi delivering this dynascene. I would
- 55:22have so much more sympathy for the late look Joe Pesci would give that.
- 55:29Yeah. Yeah, Simbad just never hits well. The other thing is,
- 55:31I mean I think they talk about bo cast sinbad because you know, he
- 55:35would appear more of like an obstacle or a threat. It would make it
- 55:38a match, make the match more either. But then Joe Peshi is not
- 55:42a threat that he doesn't. He does it with his voice, you know,
- 55:45and his eyes, his genuine craziness. Funny. You may well have
- 55:51you may like, but you may well have people going well. So you
- 55:54couldn't get Danny Devita for this role, and they had to get another short
- 55:58going in. You had to get another short Italian. But imagine Joe Peshi
- 56:00in that scene with the clerks laughing in his face. Oh. Absolutely yeah.
- 56:05And the other thing is, you know, at the very end,
- 56:07when it's basically this oh and has nightmare, Sindbad is chasing this kid?
- 56:12What is happening all over the place. If you've got someone who is basically
- 56:15the same size as Jake Lloyd, it's kind of funnier. And looking at
- 56:21this, it's like, well, this is dangerous, you know, and
- 56:22you know, I'm yeah, I'm looking at this chase and this, you
- 56:28know, climbing ladders and falling off buildings and all this kind of stuff.
- 56:30Is like with Peshi, it's more of a cartoon with this, it just
- 56:34seems like you're taking me out of it and all. Yeah, and look,
- 56:37all due respect to Sinbad, which is sorry, not a whole lot,
- 56:39but yeah, you just feel like, okay, Sindbad riff well apparently
- 56:46most of his stuff was in price for his stuff and it felt that way,
- 56:49but I just watched her going. It feels like Joe Peshi, if
- 56:52he was doing this, he would ensure that Arnold was the star of the
- 56:54scene and not him, where Sinbad felt like he was trying to steal the
- 56:58scene every time he was on it. Have you heard the story about the
- 57:02genie movie that Sindbad supposedly starred in, and everybody thinks that there's this genie
- 57:07movie that never happened, that never happened. I have in my I have
- 57:12a memory of this movie. Yeah, it's called Shazam with two a's,
- 57:15but it's not. There's a movie called Kazam with Shackam. But I don't
- 57:22know if someone started, I don't know if someone started as a goof and
- 57:25said, like, hey, remember that nineties movie with Sindbad as the genie.
- 57:30I think it was called Shazam seen the and then what's the courts they
- 57:36called? There is a thing for that. It's called the Men the Mandellar
- 57:37Effect. Yeah, because he's still alive. Yeah, yeah he was.
- 57:43Yeah, yeah, No, Adam Sandley did not. Yeah, but I
- 57:49mean, Sindbad had a run in the nineties. I mean, he was
- 57:52a standing comedian for a while. He was on I think It's on a
- 57:53different world that Cosby spinoff, except then Bill was like, I don't like
- 57:59the way, you know, I would like to talk to you about your
- 58:04stealing scenes from the show. We're canceled at least guys canceled. But you
- 58:10know, I just wasn't a fan of him in this movie. No,
- 58:14I mean, but he had like he was in house guest with Phil Hartman
- 58:16again, like there was a bunch of cheap comedies that came out in the
- 58:21nineties. I mean, we sort of films talk about, Oh no,
- 58:23this was a great renastost and you know, he had these fantastic filmmakers making
- 58:27some of their best work. And you know, you had up and comers
- 58:29like Tarantino and David Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson. You also had a lot
- 58:32of ship like this. Yeah, so yeah, and yeah, I think
- 58:36you're right. I mean, Sindbad is kind of the weak link in this
- 58:38Simbad's performance in three words, mich erratic did not laugh. I dead on
- 58:54arrival. I had a really hard time watching this movie. And I will
- 59:00send you the unedited I told you before that I was rather than typing notes,
- 59:05so I was just dictating myself. I'll send you some of the I'll
- 59:08send you the raw version. If there's anything in there that you feel that
- 59:12is worthy of chucking onto this when you release it to the patrons, feel
- 59:15free. But I had a really hard time figuring out just who the fuck
- 59:16this movie was for. And weird time, isn't it and the tone and
- 59:21Sinbad plays into that for a lot, like there's there's wacky, goofy elements
- 59:25to this. There's some broad comedy and slapstick. But then at the same
- 59:30time Mickey's Dynasne. What the fuck is that? All? Before I even
- 59:32get there. The first time we're introduced to Symbad, he just chokes a
- 59:36random woman on the street. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. One's like,
- 59:38that's cool, that's cool. Yeah, like that cool it Schwarzenegger with the
- 59:45oh poor baby, like those things were like looking at the camera and hamming
- 59:47it up. But then Phil Hartman's operating on a completely different level, and
- 59:52it's excellent that what he's doing. But as soon as I get to a
- 59:55point where I'm like I can settle in and enjoy this, the movie then
- 59:59changes gears on me again. It takes me somewhere else, and then by
- 1:00:00the time we come back to Phil Artman, I'm recovering from the last ten
- 1:00:04minutes. It's very much a sea saw. It didn't need I don't think
- 1:00:06it needed Simbad in this at all. Really, you could just Arnold just
- 1:00:08things happening to Arnold. Meanwhile, a threat being that Phil happon was it
- 1:00:13ted at home? Getting movie? There's one antagonist too many. He's got
- 1:00:19the cop, he's got Ted at home, and then he's got Ted is
- 1:00:22enough of a threat. They could have played that off a different way of
- 1:00:24having a You could have got four or five comedians in but different comic obstacle
- 1:00:30character. Every single that's a really good been a better way to have rolled
- 1:00:35that. Have you leaped ahead to changes that you would make. No,
- 1:00:37I've got a different one for that, and it's going to blow your socks
- 1:00:38off what I came worrying. So I came away from this movie and like
- 1:00:46I mean, anything that I do, I come in with an open mind,
- 1:00:50but I'm trying to review it for the good look for the bad.
- 1:00:52I didn't laugh at all, like there was. There was a couple of
- 1:00:53moments I laughed like Ted. I laughed yeah again, Like I said,
- 1:00:58at most I appreciated what Ted was doing. That's a good basically because it
- 1:01:00kind of sucked like other things were just not there for me. But the
- 1:01:05parallel that that I can draw for this movie and I'll draw to another nineties
- 1:01:09institution. This to me is like Sizzler, where you've got Firstly, it
- 1:01:17exists for people that don't challenge themselves to be better. Largely that it's it's
- 1:01:22like you can have your nan and you can have your kid, and you
- 1:01:25can have your parents, and you can have your cousin and you can all
- 1:01:29go to the movies and you can all leave and go, well, we
- 1:01:30saw a movie and like that spent some time together, and and that's what
- 1:01:36that's where the core memory starts, like Espace there, for example, I
- 1:01:37have that memory of going to watch it with my mum. You know.
- 1:01:39Cool. So this is kind of pre the well Toy Story came out of
- 1:01:47the year before. But I mean Pixar kind of ye. I won't say
- 1:01:51they masterminded, but it's like, yes, this is a movie you can
- 1:01:53take your kids to, but you won't be thinking all the time, oh,
- 1:01:58this is always dead. You're kind of like, hey, the this
- 1:02:00Toy Story movie is not bad. Hey, I'm kind of into the story
- 1:02:01about the bugs. You know. It's this you're kind of going, Schwartzenegger
- 1:02:07is the steak at a Sizzler. So you go to Sizzler and you can
- 1:02:10have like I'm gonna order my protein. That'll be like my twenty bucks and
- 1:02:13then I'll play pay my bit extra for the what's the Wen Salid buffet though
- 1:02:19solid bar, that's that's name, So you could you could go to Sizzla
- 1:02:22and just go, I'm gonna have the buffet, but if you want a
- 1:02:23steak, that's a separate charge. Yeah, And that is like, he's
- 1:02:27our twenty million dollars for the star and that's why people are coming to the
- 1:02:30movie. And it's equally you get the steak at Sizzler because you're like,
- 1:02:34oh, well, at least there's steak. I've seen steak. Steak's been
- 1:02:36good at other player. I've had steak before, Steak was awesome, and
- 1:02:38then the Sizzler steak comes out and you're like, this is like a fucking
- 1:02:42imitation of what steak used to be. And that is very much Arnold in
- 1:02:45this movie. He's playing weirdly to type and against type at the same time.
- 1:02:50I read that he took this role because he wanted to be in Everyman,
- 1:02:52and apparently his version of an every man is a fucking multimillion dollar mattress
- 1:02:57sales and that can single handedly pick up two as attendance at the same time
- 1:03:01with his left and right arm, but not kick Sinbad's ass in a fight.
- 1:03:07Like there's there's weird shit going on with what Schwarzenegger can or can't do.
- 1:03:10You can't bench press your way out of this, But he's in every
- 1:03:14Man who Doesn't bench press and fight like what that? And then everyone else
- 1:03:17in this movie is that all you can eat salad bar where they're all next
- 1:03:22to each other. They've got no fucking business being together, and none of
- 1:03:24them are doing the same thing. You've got, like spicy meatballs sitting next
- 1:03:28to lentils like it just no one's on the same page. It all gets
- 1:03:32slopped together on a plate, and all you left with at the end of
- 1:03:36the day is regret and a little bit of a feeling like you've been sitting
- 1:03:42for not enough time and too much time. At the same time, I'm
- 1:03:45wondering when it was that Arnold. I mean, I'm trying to think of
- 1:03:50any sort of any other every man rolls that he took True Lies. True
- 1:03:53Lies is kind of he's a copy kid again. But even then, it's
- 1:03:57kind of the joke that, yeah, you know, Harry Tasker and True
- 1:04:01Lies is like I am just a muck and mild computer salesman. Yeah,
- 1:04:06b ib ib okay, right there are alive people. We're going to edit
- 1:04:13this bit out of the actual show. Okay, hopefully enough, you know,
- 1:04:15sctillating content. When would he Yeah, has he done anything else that's
- 1:04:19even come close to playing in every Person? I mean we mentioned, we
- 1:04:25mentioned his sort of late nineties early two thousand's run, sort of an every
- 1:04:30man in Collateral Damage. He's sort of an every man in the Sixth Day,
- 1:04:33that cloning one. Yeah, kind of yeah, But I mean he's
- 1:04:36not playing Hi, I'm Dutch super soldier. It's me versus the Predator,
- 1:04:43John Matrix and Commando or a terminator or something like that. The thing I'm
- 1:04:46spanted to, it could never possibly try to be in every Man is so
- 1:04:49far humble upbringing, like yeah, absolutely came came from very little, but
- 1:04:57from teen years like he was all ready, He's been incredibly driven. He's
- 1:05:01a soldier, he's different to anyone else on the planet. He then explodes
- 1:05:08into a movie star almost instantly. He's dating Kennedy's like he's just there is
- 1:05:16nothing even remotely regular. The idea that he was like, that's what I
- 1:05:19want to do makes as much sense as me wanting to be like wanting to
- 1:05:25play a three time or a six time mister Olympia. That's the thing.
- 1:05:29If he's he is a savvy person, I'm wonder if he's sort of seeing
- 1:05:32which way the wind is blowing. He's seeing that people like Tianu Reeves in
- 1:05:36Speed, who was not necessarily a superman people. He saw that Tom Cruise
- 1:05:42was sort of like starting a muscle into the action genre. And I mean
- 1:05:45Cruise is probably the savviest person in Hollywood in the last fifty years. So
- 1:05:48he's thinking, oh, maybe larger than life isn't cutting it anymore. Maybe
- 1:05:55people want more relatable. So you know, I'll take a stab at that
- 1:06:00stab what you get? His jingle all the way. The difficult The thing
- 1:06:02that you cannot get around with him is the speech delivery, and not not
- 1:06:06in the It's not about making fun of the different tho like poor baby camera
- 1:06:12so faked. Then this is just a thing of having such a thick accent
- 1:06:15and having English be a second language. And sure he speaks very very well.
- 1:06:19He's a very intelligent guy, but you can't pass off as an every
- 1:06:24man when you sound robotic when you're delivering some like a foreign tongue. Plus
- 1:06:30he was the terminator and it's impossible to become an every minute after you've been
- 1:06:32the terminator, right. I kind of didn't mind the poor baby thing.
- 1:06:35I didn't mind all the Really, there were some quips I thought he nailed
- 1:06:40pretty well. I was thought poor baby it was one of those ones.
- 1:06:42I was like, Ah, it felt like for me, that's one for
- 1:06:45the trailer. It's not. It's never been my style of comedy when someone
- 1:06:48looks at the cameras to deliver the joke other than Ted Striker and flying high
- 1:06:53looking down the saying what a pissle? All right, guys, That about
- 1:06:58wraps up this little sneak peak of jingle all the way. Hope you enjoy
