- 2:12All right, guys, let's just kick this show
- 2:15off.
- 2:16You tuned into Inspirations for Your Life.
- 2:18This is series five, which means we are
- 2:20past our fourth year on the air, and
- 2:24we're now in our fifth year.
- 2:25This is show 11, episode number three.
- 2:29Our master topic for the week is own
- 2:31your power.
- 2:33Intentional choices and daily momentum.
- 2:36The episode focus for today is practice, endurance,
- 2:39and steady progress.
- 2:40Who am I?
- 2:41Great question.
- 2:42I'm John C.
- 2:43Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:48podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 2:51yes, a passionate lifelong learner, and pretty soon,
- 2:56a published author.
- 2:57So today, I'm diving deep into patience, endurance,
- 3:03and consistency, the foundational forces that turn deliberate
- 3:07effort into unstoppable growth and lasting personal power.
- 3:15Number one, patience lets growth unfold naturally.
- 3:20Rushing rarely yields sustainable results.
- 3:23Growth is a process, not an event.
- 3:26So that's an important thing to understand.
- 3:29It's a process.
- 3:30It's not an event.
- 3:31It's something we keep doing over and over
- 3:33again, but we get better at it each
- 3:35time.
- 3:35Number two, guys, endurance strengthens consistency.
- 3:40Momentum builds when effort persists.
- 3:43Even when progress seems slow, we have to
- 3:46remember that we are on the way to
- 3:49our chosen path.
- 3:51Sometimes that might seem a little challenging, but
- 3:53I want to be honest with you and
- 3:54tell you that's how it works.
- 3:57Number three, guys, slow progress compounds into wins.
- 4:01Small steps, repeated daily steps that we have
- 4:05and the actions we take accumulate into breakthroughs
- 4:08that look effortless in hindsight.
- 4:12Yeah, a lot of times people say, oh
- 4:13my gosh, I don't know how you did
- 4:16that, but they don't see all the work
- 4:18you did to get up to that point.
- 4:21Number four, guys, persistence builds trust in yourself.
- 4:26Showing up steadily reinforces self-belief and mental
- 4:29fortitude.
- 4:31Number five, avoid shortcuts that undermine results.
- 4:35Quick wins often come with hidden costs that
- 4:38derail long-term progress.
- 4:42Number six, guys, steady effort beats sporadic bursts.
- 4:46Focused repetition is far more powerful than occasional
- 4:50intense pushes.
- 4:52Number seven, daily progress reinforces identity.
- 5:01Now it might not be a big progress,
- 5:03but it's a little progress and a little
- 5:06bit of progress is better than no progress.
- 5:07As long as it's consistent, we can grow.
- 5:10Those consistent habits define who you are, not
- 5:13just what you do.
- 5:16So who you are is something a lot
- 5:19of people miss because they don't realize that
- 5:21they are the culmination of all their thoughts
- 5:24and all their actions put together, right?
- 5:26It's not just one thought, it's not just
- 5:28one action.
- 5:30I think sometimes people get a little bit,
- 5:34how can I say, overzealous on this.
- 5:37And you might be saying to me, John,
- 5:39it's interesting, but I don't get how that
- 5:43works that way.
- 5:44Well, I think the important thing, guys, to
- 5:49realize is that it's about how you're making
- 5:55decisions in your life, okay?
- 5:58How you're making the decisions comes down to
- 6:00something a lot of people just don't realize.
- 6:05They don't understand why something is going that
- 6:08way or why suddenly I'm doing something a
- 6:13different way.
- 6:14And it gets people to get, I don't
- 6:18know, a little bit confused.
- 6:21Shall I say that easily?
- 6:22Yeah, a little bit confused.
- 6:25And this confusion turns, guys, you know what
- 6:27it turns into?
- 6:28It turns into frustration.
- 6:32Unfortunately, guys, it turns into frustration.
- 6:37And when that frustration happens, people get a
- 6:43little bit upset with themselves and even others.
- 6:49So I think this is an important thing
- 6:51to realize is how something is going to
- 6:55work, right?
- 6:57And when we understand how it's going to
- 6:59work, that makes a huge, huge difference, okay?
- 7:06A huge difference.
- 7:07A difference that maybe you didn't think about,
- 7:11right?
- 7:12I think that's a very important thing to
- 7:16realize is how that actually works.
- 7:24And that's hard for a lot of people
- 7:26because they're going down one path, but then
- 7:29suddenly they're now at another path and they
- 7:31don't realize how their deliberate actions have caused
- 7:35them to get to that path or onto
- 7:36another one.
- 7:37Number eight, guys, patience sharpens insight.
- 7:42Waiting strategically allows you to see patterns and
- 7:47make wiser choices.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:50Number nine, endurance develops resilience.
- 7:54Facing challenges without quitting trains the mind to
- 7:58stay calm under pressure.
- 8:01See, the mind gets frustrated when it can't
- 8:07understand something.
- 8:08So it's better to do little bits at
- 8:10a time.
- 8:10Like you're studying for a test, don't try
- 8:12to work on 100 questions, work on just
- 8:15a few.
- 8:15And each day you get a little bit
- 8:18better at what you're doing.
- 8:21All right?
- 8:21Everybody wants to master everything overnight, but that's
- 8:25impossible.
- 8:26We need to gradually get a little bit
- 8:29better each day.
- 8:30And the key part, guys, is to stay
- 8:33calm under pressure.
- 8:35That's a very important thing.
- 8:37Number 10, guys, consistency.
- 8:40Consistency generates unstoppable momentum.
- 8:44When you take consistent steps every day, I
- 8:48don't care if you're studying, I don't care
- 8:49if you're trying to repair a relationship or
- 8:55maybe build your reputation, small, consistent steps help
- 9:01you get where you want to be.
- 9:02Let's say you want to be good in
- 9:04social media.
- 9:06Trying to pop up once sometimes can be
- 9:10a fluke.
- 9:11But when you do consistent action, people know
- 9:16you're there for the long game, not just
- 9:17for that short overnight.
- 9:19So trust is something that takes time to
- 9:23build.
- 9:25In Facebook, we have something, other platforms don't
- 9:29exactly have this, but we have something in
- 9:31Facebook that's pretty cool.
- 9:33It basically is like a barometer to your
- 9:40level.
- 9:41Now, what do I mean by that?
- 9:42So Facebook has three different levels, okay?
- 9:46And many group administrators allow these.
- 9:50Some don't, for whatever reason.
- 9:53So you start off with nothing.
- 9:55And then when you get to 700, you
- 9:59become a rising contributor.
- 10:00That's someone who's gonna be on the up
- 10:04and coming and people might be paying attention
- 10:06to that.
- 10:06And you get a little badge that's marked
- 10:10right next to your name.
- 10:12So that's pretty cool when people see that.
- 10:14Now, when you move up a little bit
- 10:15more, now double that gets to 1,400.
- 10:19But if you move up double and then
- 10:20100 more, you get 1,500.
- 10:22And that's a top contributor.
- 10:25Now, hold on your seats.
- 10:26That's not everything.
- 10:29Those that engage with meaningful quality content, that
- 10:33means you provide things, you comment on things,
- 10:36but you're not spamming, you're trying to provide
- 10:39value.
- 10:42When you get past 1,500, you get
- 10:46to 3,000.
- 10:47You don't get anything at 3,000, okay?
- 10:50All right, you don't get anything at 3
- 10:51,000.
- 10:52But when you get twice 1,500, it's
- 10:573,000.
- 11:00So you don't get anything on Facebook after
- 11:04you're a top contributor until you reach the
- 11:06next level.
- 11:06Well, that's a great question, John.
- 11:07What is the next level?
- 11:09So the next level that a lot of
- 11:12people always wanna reach and it's not always
- 11:14an easy level to reach, that is all
- 11:20-star contributor.
- 11:22So when we look at 5,000 and
- 11:26we take away 1,500, that's 3,500
- 11:31more.
- 11:33So basically two times would get you to
- 11:40one stack, right?
- 11:41But in this case, it doesn't do anything
- 11:43for you, right?
- 11:45But if you take 1,500 times 2
- 11:47.5, you're at 3,750.
- 11:53So if you take 1,500 and you
- 11:57times it times three, you get 4,500,
- 12:00okay?
- 12:01If you do 1,500, okay, 1,500,
- 12:04and now you take 1,500 and you
- 12:07times it times 3.5, you're over your
- 12:11limit.
- 12:12You had to hit 5,000.
- 12:14So that's right in the sweet spot.
- 12:16But a lot of people don't hit that
- 12:17level and that's called all-star contributor.
- 12:20So what I wanna tell you is that
- 12:22you don't get to be top by doing
- 12:24one thing.
- 12:25You get to be top by being consistent
- 12:28and aware over time.
- 12:31You don't try to be a loud person.
- 12:34You try to be somebody that's thoughtful, that's
- 12:36someone who's providing value, someone who is engaging
- 12:40in a way that's conducive with the group
- 12:44that you're in.
- 12:45So consistency generates unstoppable momentum.
- 12:48And in Facebook, that's absolutely true.
- 12:51If you're somebody who just pops in there
- 12:52once in a while and you post something,
- 12:55you're not gonna get very far, okay?
- 12:58Because Facebook rewards based on posts and based
- 13:01on engagements.
- 13:03Number 11, guys, long-term focus avoids burnout.
- 13:08Sustainability is built by pacing yourself rather than
- 13:11sprinting aimlessly.
- 13:13Small daily actions create impact.
- 13:17Never underestimate the power of incremental improvement.
- 13:21Never, never, never.
- 13:22That small bit of improvement that you're not
- 13:25seeing, okay?
- 13:27Don't be upset with it because the incremental
- 13:30will compound.
- 13:32People say, oh my gosh, John, I only
- 13:33put, I put a dollar in the bank,
- 13:36okay?
- 13:36So this is a great question.
- 13:38If you want, let's take some a little
- 13:40more, maybe a little more meatball.
- 13:41Let's say you put, hypothetically, let's say you
- 13:46put in, let's say you put in, I
- 13:49don't know, $100.
- 13:49So compound interest, okay?
- 13:52Compound interest of $100 over two years in
- 14:01a CD.
- 14:05So what does that mean?
- 14:08Because that sounds like really complicated.
- 14:12And so if your initial investment is $100,
- 14:17okay?
- 14:18And most rate of return CDs are 2%,
- 14:21and the investment, let's just say, is two
- 14:23years, okay?
- 14:25What is that gonna give you?
- 14:27Well, not much.
- 14:28It's gonna give you $104.04. But let
- 14:31me go back and tell you where it
- 14:33actually makes, you know, it makes some sense.
- 14:36Let's say you put in $1,000, okay?
- 14:40Rate of return is 2%.
- 14:42So now you are getting $40 in two
- 14:47years.
- 14:47But here's where it gets to be kind
- 14:49of fun.
- 14:51Let's say it's $1,000.
- 14:54Let's say you put in $10,000 at
- 14:572% for two years.
- 14:58You ready, guys?
- 15:00You just made yourself $404.
- 15:03So what I'm trying to show you is
- 15:05the compound rate of return, the fact that
- 15:07even though that little bit, you're like, oh,
- 15:092% is nothing, but 2% is
- 15:11something when we compound it, all right?
- 15:13Number 13, controlled effort amplifies results.
- 15:18It sure does.
- 15:19Measured energy ensures each step counts more than
- 15:23raw intensity.
- 15:24That's important.
- 15:26Measuring each step, make sure it's consistent.
- 15:29That's what happens.
- 15:30Number 14, waiting strategically builds advantage patience, is
- 15:37a competitive edge few truly exploit.
- 15:41The people that don't have patience might appear
- 15:45to rise quickly, but then guess what happens?
- 15:48They fall very, very quickly.
- 15:52They fall very quickly because they don't have
- 15:56a solid foundation.
- 15:59What happens if you build a house or
- 16:02a commercial building and you don't have a
- 16:04good foundation?
- 16:05You know what's gonna happen?
- 16:08It's gonna fall down.
- 16:10A perfect example of this is down the
- 16:13shore, right?
- 16:16It is said that most people will wanna
- 16:22build on spread footings, but it's not the
- 16:27best thing to do.
- 16:31The reason is water and wind come, and
- 16:35guess what happens?
- 16:36It just knocks the house right down, right?
- 16:39Dilapidates it.
- 16:40But if you build on pilings and they
- 16:46get driven in the ground and even some
- 16:47of the pilings, even the house sit on
- 16:49and the other ones the house is built
- 16:50around, you've got a very stable foundation, very
- 16:58stable foundation.
- 17:00And to some people, when you go slower,
- 17:06slower is faster.
- 17:09Okay, so if you go slower, you don't
- 17:12have to keep going back and doing it
- 17:14again and again.
- 17:16That's an important point, guys.
- 17:17Number 15, persistence converts effort into mastery.
- 17:23Persistence converts effort into mastery.
- 17:26Mastery is earned through repetition and disciplined endurance.
- 17:30I'm not telling you that being an Olympic
- 17:34swimmer or being somebody great in your discipline
- 17:37is gonna be easy.
- 17:38I'm not telling you that at all.
- 17:40But what I am telling you is that
- 17:42if you commit and you do consistent steps
- 17:45every day, you're gonna get closer and it's
- 17:49gonna feel less uncomfortable, okay?
- 17:54Number 16, repetition reinforces skill.
- 17:59Every repeat action embeds knowledge, instinct, and competence,
- 18:05everyone.
- 18:05One.
- 18:07Number 17, endurance, guys, strengthens emotional stability.
- 18:14Consistency in action tempers emotional swings and reduces
- 18:19reactivity.
- 18:21We've said before that those that are reactive,
- 18:26those that fly off the handle, those are
- 18:28not the people you wanna be around.
- 18:29That's not good energy.
- 18:30And they don't make decisions that are gonna
- 18:32be conducive for themselves and for others.
- 18:33They just make it because they have to,
- 18:36right?
- 18:39But when you're proactive, you are more calm.
- 18:44Let's take the fire scenario, okay?
- 18:47Everybody can relate to a fire.
- 18:49Maybe they've been a fire, maybe they've known
- 18:50someone was in a fire or a situation.
- 18:52And so when you plan for a fire
- 18:55and you know what you have to do
- 18:57to prevent it and what you have to
- 18:59do if you have one and what do
- 19:00you do for emergencies and how do you
- 19:02get out and you practice those skills.
- 19:05If the fire ever happens, like, okay, this
- 19:08is a real fire.
- 19:09No problem, we practice this.
- 19:11We know that we got our fire extinguisher.
- 19:14We're gonna try to put the fire out
- 19:15quickly.
- 19:16If we can't, we're gonna evacuate the house.
- 19:19We're gonna go call 911, okay?
- 19:20Call the fire department.
- 19:24If we put the fire out, great.
- 19:26But if we don't put the fire out,
- 19:28first thing we're gonna do before we leave
- 19:29the house, make sure there's no other fires
- 19:31around.
- 19:31We're gonna feel the doors, make sure nothing
- 19:33else is on fire, right?
- 19:35And we're gonna leave.
- 19:35And we already know our escape path because
- 19:38we've practiced this a couple of times a
- 19:41year.
- 19:41We know the location we're meeting at, okay?
- 19:46And we know what we need to grab.
- 19:49And that's not grabbing your laptop.
- 19:51That's not grabbing anything else.
- 19:54You may grab your wallet, which has ID
- 19:56and things like that.
- 19:56That's important.
- 19:58But everything else, just leave, okay?
- 20:01And when you leave the environment, you have
- 20:06to understand that because you've been proactive, you're
- 20:11gonna exit a lot calmer.
- 20:13And there's a higher probability you're gonna make
- 20:15it out alive because you're not gonna do
- 20:18something stupid because you've been in this rush
- 20:23to make a decision.
- 20:24You know what a fire is.
- 20:25You know how you have to react.
- 20:29I'm like, okay, wow, this is real this
- 20:30time, right?
- 20:31I'll give an example.
- 20:32I was at school today in one of
- 20:36the common areas.
- 20:37It was actually one of the dorm common
- 20:38areas.
- 20:39And they had made an announcement just saying
- 20:44that the alarm was just about going off.
- 20:48And then right away, an ousted came over.
- 20:51We are currently working on the fire system.
- 20:55If you hear an alarm, please disregard it
- 20:58at this time.
- 20:59So they would say that every 15 minutes.
- 21:01So this happened like two or three times.
- 21:04And then about 30, 40 minutes in, the
- 21:08alarm goes off and a cop comes in.
- 21:10He goes, there's a fire alarm going off.
- 21:13Why are you people not leaving the building?
- 21:15There's a fire.
- 21:16And I'm like, oh, officer, yeah, the fire.
- 21:19Yes, the fire alarm is going off.
- 21:21But we've been told several times every 15
- 21:23minutes that they're working on the fire alarm
- 21:25and to disregard all fire alarm signals until
- 21:29further notice.
- 21:30He's like, well, it would be nice if
- 21:33they told us.
- 21:35And just after he left, they came over
- 21:38the announcement again and said, okay, we are
- 21:42done testing the fire alarm system.
- 21:45Any further fire alarm signals that you hear,
- 21:48please respond to them and evacuate the building
- 21:53immediately.
- 21:54So when we know what to expect, it
- 21:58could be a flood, it could be a
- 22:00fire or another type of disaster or even
- 22:04a relationship bubble, or let's say a high
- 22:09or low.
- 22:11We know what to expect.
- 22:13And so because of that, we can be
- 22:18proactive and not react.
- 22:20We don't have to like, oh my gosh,
- 22:22what am I gonna do now?
- 22:24So it takes some time to learn how
- 22:26to be reactive.
- 22:27But when you practice, it just becomes something
- 22:31so natural.
- 22:34Number 18, patience, guys.
- 22:36Patience cultivates clarity.
- 22:38Stepping back allows for a better perspective on
- 22:41what really matters in your life.
- 22:43And that's more of that sense of calm,
- 22:46right?
- 22:47That inner peace.
- 22:49Number 19, steady habits enhance self-discipline.
- 22:52Your daily routines are the backbone of your
- 22:55mental toughness.
- 22:57Get them down pat.
- 22:59Number 20, long-term thinking shapes your character.
- 23:03Immediate gratification rarely builds depth, guys.
- 23:07Deliberate effort does.
- 23:09So something might seem great that you're gonna
- 23:12get a payoff instantly, but that might not
- 23:14be the wisest thing to do.
- 23:16Number 21, control pacing maximizes output.
- 23:21Align energy with priority tasks for compound effectiveness.
- 23:28Align, alignment.
- 23:31Number 22, avoid distractions that waste time.
- 23:35Every interruption erodes focus and undermines progress.
- 23:39So what's a good thing to do when
- 23:40you're studying?
- 23:41Well, plan not to be interrupted.
- 23:45And an interruption does happen, make sure that
- 23:49you can deal with it and get right
- 23:50back to the business at hand so you
- 23:52don't waste time.
- 23:55Number 23, guys, patience protects mental bandwidth.
- 24:00Staying calm and deliberate preserves your capacity to
- 24:04think clearly.
- 24:06That's important.
- 24:07Number 24, endurance multiplies confidence.
- 24:10Seeing yourself persist builds trust in your abilities.
- 24:14So when we feel confidence, whether we're seeing
- 24:18it, we're hearing it, we're experiencing it, it
- 24:22builds our confidence and it makes this like
- 24:28a no effort for us.
- 24:30Number 25, daily focus strengthens identity.
- 24:33What you repeatedly invest in becomes a core
- 24:36part of who you are.
- 24:37In other words, what we think about most
- 24:40often is what we become.
- 24:42Number 26, consistency creates credibility.
- 24:47People and systems respond to those who deliver
- 24:49predictability.
- 24:53Number 27, avoid impulsive choices.
- 24:56Reactionary decisions often cost more than a moment
- 24:59of pause.
- 25:02That reaction that you took might've seemed something
- 25:04really great, right?
- 25:06But you made a decision that you really
- 25:08didn't wanna make because you were kind of
- 25:10like forced or people like to say under
- 25:12the gun.
- 25:13Now there wasn't a gun at you, but
- 25:15you felt like you had to make a
- 25:17decision.
- 25:19Happens in a lot of things.
- 25:20A lot of salespeople do that.
- 25:22It's a very bad tactic, but they do
- 25:24that so they can close sales faster.
- 25:27It's really not operating with integrity though.
- 25:30Number 28, patience compounds strategic advantage.
- 25:35Waiting wisely opens doors that hasty action closes.
- 25:40So people don't wanna wait.
- 25:41You know why?
- 25:42They're impatient.
- 25:43They think if we rush and we get
- 25:45something now, we're gonna get it quicker.
- 25:46But the truth of the matter is you're
- 25:48not gonna get it any faster.
- 25:50In fact, by you rushing, you might not
- 25:52even get what you want.
- 25:53And there might be a mistake and you
- 25:54might have to do it all over again.
- 25:57Number 29, persistence, guys, turns vision into results.
- 26:03Every effort you maintain nudges you closer to
- 26:05your goals.
- 26:06Every effort, not just one effort, but every
- 26:09effort you have.
- 26:09That is a very keen insight that I
- 26:11want you guys to all understand.
- 26:13And number 30, guys, endurance plus consistency.
- 26:17So endurance plus consistency equals unstoppable growth.
- 26:21Let me say that again.
- 26:22Your endurance plus your constant consistent action, not
- 26:26doing more, not doing less, the same amount,
- 26:29equals unstoppable growth.
- 26:30Because here's what happened.
- 26:30When people actually do too much, they burn
- 26:33out and then they don't even wanna do
- 26:34any of it.
- 26:35So having a habit where you do just
- 26:37a little bit and it seems so easy,
- 26:39like a no brainer, and you keep doing
- 26:41it, that's a system.
- 26:43When you combine steady action with patience, your
- 26:47results exceed expectations.
- 26:53Creating personal power that lasts time and time
- 26:58again.
- 26:58Now you might say to me, John, I'm
- 27:01a very patient person, but when I want
- 27:03something, I want something.
- 27:06The question I ask you is, why do
- 27:09you want it right now?
- 27:09Why is it such an emergency at this
- 27:12moment?
- 27:14Is that something you're putting on yourself or
- 27:19is it something someone else is putting on
- 27:20yourself?
- 27:20Because if it's something someone else is putting
- 27:22on you and you have to deal with
- 27:24what kind of energy you wanna deal with,
- 27:26right?
- 27:26If something you're putting on, you have to
- 27:27ask yourself, well, why am I putting this
- 27:29distress on myself?
- 27:29Why am I doing this, right?
- 27:32If we could just be kind and a
- 27:34little bit gentler to ourself, we'll find that
- 27:36we'll get that and everything else we want
- 27:38even more.
- 27:39But we've gotta be patient and loving with
- 27:41ourself.
