- 0:27Now to the news. Two children injured in sweating accident
- 0:31by Jane Reid Climb. Neighbors turned out to help when
- 0:36a little snow day fund became not so fun for
- 0:39two children on Tatum Bridge Roads Thursday. Looking for a
- 0:43little fund. With schools closed for the snow last week,
- 0:46two children visiting the home at Tatum Ridge Road decided
- 0:50to go slooding down a nearby hill. While began as
- 0:53a great way to spend a snow date, didn't end
- 0:56that way when the slood collided with something at the
- 0:58bottom of the hill. Willisburg Fire Chief Jesse Corney said
- 1:03there was some barbed wire near the children that may
- 1:05have been what they hit. Upon arrival at the scene,
- 1:08Carney said the children were at the bottom of the
- 1:11hill and rescuers were at the top. He asked neighbors
- 1:14to come with side by sides to help. Since the
- 1:17side by sides and ATVs could not get to the children,
- 1:21volunteers with the Willisburg and Washington County Rescue squads descended
- 1:25to the children's location and carried them up the hill
- 1:29where side by sides were waiting to transport them to
- 1:32the ambulance. A boy believed to be about eight years
- 1:35old was taken to North Washington School, where the Mackville
- 1:39Fire Department had set up a landing zone with a
- 1:42helicopter that was waiting to fly him to the University
- 1:45of Kentucky Children's Hospital in Lexington. His sister, about thirteen
- 1:50years old, was driven by the family to the hospital
- 1:53for treatment of her injuries. Both suffered lacerations from the collision,
- 1:57but injuries were not believed to be life threatening. Quote.
- 2:02I'm proud to live in a community where people are
- 2:05willing to come out and help, Carney said. We called
- 2:08a few neighbors and immediately we have three side by
- 2:11sides on scene ready to help. End of quote. All
- 2:14the rescue squad and fire department members are also volunteers.
- 2:22Preliminary fitness four hundred dollars cast scholarship goes to Maddie's
- 2:27Spaulding of Washington County. Washington County's Distinguished Young Woman of
- 2:32twenty twenty five, Mattie Spalding, began the Kentucky DYW Distinguished
- 2:37Young Woman Competition on Saturday, January eleventh. Valding took to
- 2:42the stage to perform in the two preliminary showcases Saturday
- 2:46afternoon and evening. Valding was awarded the Preliminary Fitness Award,
- 2:51which comes with a four hundred dollars scholarship to add
- 2:54to those earned in the local competition. Vauding continues DWY
- 3:00competition until after the sun has gone to press. The
- 3:03Sun will bring you more about Vaulding and her DYW
- 3:07adventure next week. Washington County continues low jobless rate by J. E. Klein.
- 3:17Marion and Washington Counties tied for the third lowest unemployment
- 3:21rate among counties across the Commonwealth for November twenty twenty four.
- 3:26The November rates were released last week by the Kentucky
- 3:30Center for Statistics ky STATS, an agency within the Kentucky
- 3:35Education and Labor Cabinet. That report stated unemployment rates rose
- 3:39in one hundred nineteen counties between November twenty twenty three
- 3:42and November twenty twenty four and cell and one. Woodford
- 3:47County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at
- 3:50three point six percent. It was followed by Cumberland County
- 3:54three point eight percent and Marion Scott in Washington Counties
- 3:58three point nine percent. The November rates of Washington County
- 4:03was slightly lower than that recorded in October twenty twenty four,
- 4:07when the rate was four point two percent. Martin County
- 4:11recorded the state's highest unemployment rate at eleven point eight percent.
- 4:16It was followed by Magoffin County at nine point nine
- 4:18percent and Harlan County at nine point three percent. Ky
- 4:23Stats noted that county unemployment rates and employment levels are
- 4:27not seasonally adjusted because of small sample sizes. Employment statistics
- 4:32undergo sharp fluctuations due to seasonal events such as weather changes, harvest, holidays,
- 4:38and school openings and closing. Seasonal adjustments estimate these influences
- 4:43and make it easier to observe statistical trends. The comparable
- 4:48unadjusted unemployment rate for the state was four point eight
- 4:51percent in November twenty twenty four and four percent for
- 4:54the nation. Kentucky's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from October
- 4:59six November twenty twenty four. This increases due to more
- 5:03workers entering the labor force and searching for a job,
- 5:07rather than fewer workers being employed. On a seasonally adjusted basis,
- 5:12both a number of people in the labor force and
- 5:14the number of people employed in Kentucky increased in November
- 5:18twenty twenty four. Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and
- 5:23are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count
- 5:26people working. The Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet emphasizes that
- 5:31data should only be compared to the same month in
- 5:34previous years. Superintendent Cochrane receives new four year contract by

- 12:46the website compared the fifty states across three dimensions, research
- 12:50funding and resources, research output and impact, and healthcare infrastructure
- 12:55and support. They then evaluated those dimensions using thirteen run
- 13:00deplet metrics. Each graded on a one hundred point scale,
- 13:03with a score of one hundred representing the highest focus
- 13:06on cancer research. In the three dimensions, Kentucky ranked thirty sixth,
- 13:11and research funding and resources fiftieth in research output and
- 13:16input and twenty fifth in healthcare infrastructure and support with
- 13:20the score of twenty five point ninety seven. Kentucky rate
- 13:24forty sixth and the fewest research universities per capita and
- 13:28forty ninth in the highest cancer mortality rate. Massachusetts ranks
- 13:33first with a score of eighty one point four to one,
- 13:36followed by New York, California, Colorado, and Maryland. The ranking

- 14:14cancer mortality rate. While the state ranks low in these categories,
- 14:18it is still making strives. In twenty twenty three, of
- 14:22the market Cancer Center in Lexington was awarded thirteen point
- 14:25five million dollars through a five year renewal of its

- 14:41of quote cancer Center, which puts it among several dozen
- 14:45cancer centers nationally to attain the status and the only
- 14:49one in Kentucky. Quote we can heal more Kentuckians. UK
- 14:54President Eli Kappaluto said, we can eradicate this insidious disease
- 14:58that decimates community ties and extinguishes lives are too soon
- 15:03and according to the University of Kentucky, ninety seven percent
- 15:08of Marky's patients come from Kentucky. Kentucky's cancer mortality rate
- 15:12is higher than the national rate for several types of cancer,
- 15:16including lung cancer eighty two percent higher, coorectal cancer twenty
- 15:21five percent higher, and leukemia fifteen percent higher. Kentucky's cancer
- 15:26mortality rate for lung cancer is the highest in the
- 15:29nation for both overall and male rates, while women rank
- 15:33second nationally in death due to lung cancer. The state
- 15:37has more than twenty seven thousand new cancer cases and

- 19:24again by Peter w Zebeti Paxton Media Group. Stephen Lawson,
- 19:30accused co conspirator of the twenty fifteen disappearance and presumed
- 19:34death of Crystal Rogers, will now take the stand on
- 19:37May twenty seven, twenty twenty five. According to a court
- 19:40order issued Friday by Nelson Circa Judge Charles sent Lawson
- 19:46and his son Joseph Lawson have been charged with conspiracy
- 19:49to murder for Rogers and complicity or I'm Sorry conspiracy
- 19:54to murder of Rogers and complicity to tampering with difficult
- 19:58evidence in her disappearance. Rogers's former boyfriend, Brooks Hulks, is
- 20:03charged with murder and tampering with difficult evidence. All three
- 20:07men are jailed and awaiting trial, with the Lawsons each
- 20:10facing a two hundred fifty thousand dollars bond and House
- 20:14facing a ten million dollars bond. Rogers, a mother of five,
- 20:19disappeared July fourth weekend twenty fifteen. Her car was found
- 20:23abandoned on the Bluegrass Parkway with her keys, purse, and
- 20:27cell phone inside. Statements introduced in court hearings over the
- 20:31past two years suggest that Joseph Lawson and Stephen Lawson
- 20:34played a role in moving rogers car to the parkway.
- 20:39House and Joseph Lawson are scheduled to go on trial
- 20:42together on June twenty fourth, twenty twenty five, in Warren
- 20:45County Circuit Court and Bowling Zeen. Originally Special prosecutor Shane Young,
- 20:51had hoped to try all three men in a conjoined
- 20:53trial on February tenth, but Sims honored defense attorneys for
- 20:58class to try Stephen Lawson's separately because of past statements
- 21:01he made to investigators in his effort to gain immunity
- 21:05from prosecution. Brian Butler, house attorney, and Kevin Coleman and
- 21:09Robert Boyd, who represent Joseph Lawson, had complained that if
- 21:13their client had to stand trial with Stephen Lawson, that
- 21:16his statements could prove prejudicial and that they would not
- 21:20have the opportunity for cross examination to adequately defend their clients.
- 21:25Zach Butler and Darren Wolfe took over as council for
- 21:28Stephen Lawson on August twenty second, twenty twenty four, under
- 21:32contract with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. That move
- 21:36was necessitated by Stephen Lawson firing his attorney, Ted Lavitt
- 21:40on August eighth, throwing the proceedings into flux. The motion
- 21:45filed earlier this week by wolf and Butler reed quote.
- 21:49During the August twenty second, twenty twenty four status hearing,
- 21:52Honorable d. Wolfe, on behalf of mister Stephen Lawson, expressed
- 21:56concerns on the record regarding this feasibility of trying to
- 22:00mister Lawson's case by the currently scheduled date of February eleventh,
- 22:04twenty twenty four sixth s SEA. That's in parentheses. However,
- 22:11neither of the undersign wanted to show bad faith by
- 22:13finding a motion to continued trial at that time. Given
- 22:17the undersign had not conferred with mister Lawson or had
- 22:20an opportunity to review discovery with mister Lawson, That's the
- 22:24end of the quoted file. Wolfe then noted that he
- 22:29and Buckler were delivered an external hard drive containing two
- 22:33terribized of data by the state. Quote to declare that
- 22:36volume of discovery as anonymously high would be an understatement
- 22:41and to hold Wolf and Buckler wrote in their motion
- 22:44requesting Stephen Lawson's trial be moved to May twenty seventh.
- 22:48The amount of discovery evidence got bigger, however, as Wolf
- 22:52and Butler requested for review evidence collected by the FBI,
- 22:56which a law with the Kentucky State Police had been
- 22:58involved in investigating the case. That data was contained on
- 23:02an additional ten terabyte hard drive containing evidence collected by
- 23:06the federal government. Quote. While this effort will necessarily delay
- 23:11the trial for mister Lawson, it ensures that he may
- 23:14receive a fair and of full defense and anticipation of
- 23:17the trial and to quote Wolfe and Butler wrote, Simms
- 23:22ordered the defense attorneys to supply their state with a
- 23:24written summary of the identity of any expert witnesses and
- 23:28their opinions, qualifications, and the quote, bases and reasons for
- 23:33those opinions, including but not limited to mitigations, specialists and experts,
- 23:38and the quote. The next case review is scheduled for
- 23:42one thirty pm February twenty seventh in Nelson Circuit Courts,
- 23:49Lincoln Trail Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees enjoys Holiday
- 23:53Celebration January fifteenth, twenty twenty five. The December meeting is

- 25:04announces one hundred and ten million dollar opioid settlement was Kroger.
- 25:10Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced a settlement with the
- 25:14Kroger Company last week that will bring one hundred and
- 25:17ten million dollars to the commonwealth in supportive efforts to
- 25:21combat the opioid crisis. Quote. For over a decade, Kroger
- 25:26tragically fed the flames of the drug addiction fire that
- 25:30rages across every county of our commonwealth. But this devastation
- 25:34isn't the end of the story. Kentucky is resilient and
- 25:38we will get back up no matter how many times
- 25:40we are knocked down. And to quote that Attorney General
- 25:44Coleman quote, today, with one hundred and ten million dollars
- 25:48invested in recovery efforts in Kentucky, Kroger has agreed to
- 25:52be part of the solution and developed in February of
- 25:56twenty twenty four, Attorney General Coleman directed at the lawsuit
- 26:00against Kroger be filed in Bullet County Circuit Court in Shepherdsville, Kentucky,
- 26:05alleging the company was responsible for pumping what equated to
- 26:09four hundred forty four million doses of oisy opioids into
- 26:12Kentucky over a thirteen year period with no internal monitoring
- 26:17system to report suspected abuse. Between two thousand and six
- 26:22and twenty nineteen, Kroger, in its more than one hundred
- 26:25pharmacies in the Commonwealth, were responsible for over eleven percent
- 26:29of all opioid pills dispensed in Kentucky. General Coleman recognized
- 26:35Deputy Attorney General Rob Duncan, Civil Chief Justice Clark or
- 26:40Justin Clark, and Division Chief for Consumer and Senior Protection
- 26:44Chris Lewis for ably representing the Commonwealth in the matter.
