- 2:11Speaker 9: Hello, hello.
- 2:12Speaker 8: It's since waiting.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Is that how you feel?
- 2:18Speaker 12: It is. I'm sorry listeners.
- 2:22Speaker 9: It's that Sunday hangover. It's kind of everybody's logie and.
- 2:29Speaker 11: or we were hanging out talking about movies anyway like
- 2:31Speaker 11: geeks do so i was like all right let's just
- 2:33Speaker 11: do our geek activities we're playing the what have you
- 2:36Speaker 11: seen lately so ken what have you seen lately well.
- 2:39Speaker 9: I just caught up on true detective that was the
- 2:41Speaker 9: big thing took me a little while and liked that
- 2:44Speaker 9: a lot for the most part it was really really
- 2:46Speaker 9: good anytime you get um oh you know the king
- 2:49Speaker 9: and well i don't want to give any spoilers i
- 2:51Speaker 9: better shut up about that but uh Yeah, no, it was,
- 2:55Speaker 9: you know, it was McConaughey's year this last year, so,
- 2:57Speaker 9: and it just kept going with that.
- 2:59Speaker 3: That's why I.
- 3:00Speaker 11: Was pretty sure they were just going to hand him
- 3:01Speaker 11: the Oscar, because I was like, I think it's almost
- 3:03Speaker 11: more of like a thanks for not doing any more rom-coms. Like,
- 3:07Speaker 11: it really, like, he just changed his mode. He was like,
- 3:10Speaker 11: I did 10 years of doing crappy comedies, and he's like,
- 3:13Speaker 11: I'm going to take myself seriously, I'm going to take
- 3:14Speaker 11: my acting seriously.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So, it's, yeah, it's a whole different world.
- 3:18Speaker 9: That's just it, you know. I, you know, I was just...
- 3:22Speaker 9: Really amazed that this was the same guy that did,
- 3:24Speaker 9: you know, those... I'm trying to think what her name is.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Jeez.
- 3:29Speaker 13: Kate Hudson.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go.
- 3:30Speaker 9: Kate Hudson movies, you know. And it's like, okay, now
- 3:32Speaker 9: all of a sudden this guy from failure to launch
- 3:35Speaker 9: is actually in mud, you know, and these others. I just, yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 9: I loved it.
- 3:39Speaker 3: He's a real actor. He's just been coasting for a decade.
- 3:42Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 9: It just took, you know.
- 3:44Speaker 11: Go back and look at Lone Star. Like, he's amazing
- 3:46Speaker 11: in Lone Star. And then along came Kate Hudson.
- 3:49Speaker 9: Yeah, and just, you know, vacuumed for 10 years. But, yeah, no,
- 3:54Speaker 9: it was that. I'm trying to think of what else
- 3:57Speaker 9: here lately. I've been, you know, big into Eurocrime, the
- 4:00Speaker 9: Italian stuff. And, you know, that's always a touchstone. There's some,
- 4:06Speaker 9: like the weird Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill, you know, stuff.
- 4:11Speaker 9: I'm trying to think now. titles are kind of escaping
- 4:15Speaker 9: me right now, but what's great is, I don't know
- 4:17Speaker 9: how everybody else feels about it, but I discover a
- 4:19Speaker 9: lot of stuff on YouTube, you know, and you're like, oh, okay, well,
- 4:22Speaker 9: that whole movie is there, it's got German subtitles, but
- 4:24Speaker 9: I'll watch it, you know, so.
- 4:26Speaker 11: I mean, it makes you a little more adventurous when
- 4:29Speaker 11: you don't have to invest, and when you can back
- 4:31Speaker 11: out and be like, 15 minutes in, be like, what am.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I watching, and so.
- 4:35Speaker 9: Exactly, yeah, no, it's, you know, it's a hoot, and,
- 4:38Speaker 9: you know, 77, I mean, that's my wheelhouse anyway, you know, so.
- 4:42Speaker 11: It is funny when I go back and how many
- 4:44Speaker 11: things in the 70s I'm like, I just kind of love.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And it's just a vibe almost.
- 4:49Speaker 11: Not the cheesy 70s stuff, but just stuff that feels
- 4:52Speaker 11: like it's of that time and the filmmakers were kind
- 4:55Speaker 11: of making something different. It was just a totally different
- 4:58Speaker 11: feeling that they were going for back then.
- 5:00Speaker 9: Right, yeah. When not so handsome a guy could be
- 5:04Speaker 9: a movie action hero.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Especially in Italy.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Yeah, right. You know, I love going back to, like,
- 5:12Speaker 9: California Split and, you know, those Altman movies. You know, like,
- 5:15Speaker 9: when Elliot Gould and George Segal were, you know, big guys,
- 5:18Speaker 9: you know.
- 5:18Speaker 3: They would not be A-list men now.
- 5:20Speaker 13: Not at all.
- 5:21Speaker 9: Not at all. They're not just that pretty. But I'm
- 5:24Speaker 9: trying to think. There was a George Segal movie not
- 5:27Speaker 9: too long ago. Ah, my names are escaping me. I
- 5:29Speaker 9: guess it's that Sunday just... I'm getting that more and
- 5:33Speaker 9: more these days.
- 5:33Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 9: No, it's... It's a really interesting movie. He's a put-upon.
- 5:40Speaker 9: It's actually like 68. He's a put-upon, just your standard
- 5:48Speaker 9: kind of down-and-out kind of guy. But Lee Remick moves
- 5:53Speaker 9: into his apartment building.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think I've seen this one.
- 5:57Speaker 11: Doesn't he have a mother that's sort of pushing him
- 5:59Speaker 11: to get in a relationship?
- 6:01Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:02Speaker 3: That's a really interesting movie.
- 6:04Speaker 9: Yeah, and I swear, because Rod Steiger is the villain
- 6:07Speaker 9: in it, and he's a serial killer who preys on women.
- 6:10Speaker 9: And it's a comedy. It's a dark comedy. But I
- 6:13Speaker 9: swear that's where Anthony Hopkins got everything he needed for
- 6:15Speaker 9: Hannibal Lecter.
- 6:17Speaker 11: I believe it because I remember talking about what an
- 6:19Speaker 11: interesting take they have on the serial killer. And to
- 6:21Speaker 11: be that old, like it's way ahead of that serial
- 6:24Speaker 11: killer vibe that came along. So, I mean, it was
- 6:27Speaker 11: just sort of in the news at that point. It
- 6:28Speaker 11: wasn't really in Hollywood yet.
- 6:30Speaker 9: Yeah, right. It hadn't gone the full, you know, I mean,
- 6:33Speaker 9: you know, you're talking still post-psycho and peeping Tom, but.
- 6:38Speaker 3: By the time you hit the 70s and you had
- 6:39Speaker 3: so much... The.
- 6:40Speaker 11: Headlines were nothing but serial killers. But Hollywood still was
- 6:43Speaker 11: kind of like, we don't want to get into trouble.
- 6:45Speaker 11: And they had to give it a few years before
- 6:47Speaker 11: they started doing it. I think it was a safe area.
- 6:51Speaker 11: They didn't feel like they were still... I don't know,
- 6:53Speaker 11: it seemed like you would have gotten more backlash, especially
- 6:54Speaker 11: back then. People would have gotten up in arms if
- 6:56Speaker 11: you were, like, harping on the actual news and, like,
- 6:59Speaker 11: glorifying dead people that are actually being murdered.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Well, now we have no scruples. We don't care.
- 7:04Speaker 9: No, the more the better at this point, especially at
- 7:07Speaker 9: this convention. I'm seeing stuff and I'm like, really? That's
- 7:09Speaker 9: a cover? Because that's kind of like somebody's really scary nightmares.
- 7:14Speaker 9: That's really.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Or it's just a naked chick.
- 7:16Speaker 9: Yeah, and that's the thing. It's like, you know, I
- 7:18Speaker 9: wonder what that, you know, poor girl, she's like, yeah,
- 7:20Speaker 9: I'm acting. This is a job. Yeah, I'm successful.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Paycheck's a paycheck.
- 7:25Speaker 9: That's it.
- 7:26Speaker 13: That's it.
- 7:27Speaker 9: You know, not my cup of tea, but, you know, whatever.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Andy, have you seen anything?
- 7:33Speaker 8: Well, after that conversation, my choices are going to sound
- 7:37Speaker 8: so lowbrow and stupid because you guys geeked out real
- 7:42Speaker 8: good right there.
- 7:43Speaker 3: We excel at that.
- 7:45Speaker 12: So I've been.
- 7:46Speaker 8: Really lazy lately, like really lazy.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Like too lazy to push play?
- 7:54Speaker 12: Too lazy to wipe myself.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I was wondering what was going on around here. It
- 7:59Speaker 3: was sort of a, anyway.
- 8:00Speaker 8: Because my teeth are not in good shape right now.
- 8:04Speaker 8: I'm just like, don't want to try anything new. So
- 8:07Speaker 8: I've been watching a lot of old stuff. I've been
- 8:10Speaker 8: watching Frozen over and over again.
- 8:13Speaker 13: Frozen, you know.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Which Frozen? I guess for horror geeks, you get a specimen.
- 8:17Speaker 8: Oh, the Disney version. I like the other Frozen, but
- 8:21Speaker 8: not the pretty people trapped on a ski lift.
- 8:23Speaker 12: Not that one.
- 8:24Speaker 11: So at no point the Disney characters don't pull their
- 8:26Speaker 11: hand off or anything?
- 8:29Speaker 12: There are wolves, but they don't tear anybody apart.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Damn it. Disney, get on it.
- 8:34Speaker 8: I've just been belting out let it go all over
- 8:37Speaker 8: and over again. I'm such a cliche.
- 8:39Speaker 3: You and all of America.
- 8:40Speaker 12: Yeah, but it's true. And I've also been.
- 8:44Speaker 8: I guess this is somewhat cool. I've been watching a
- 8:46Speaker 8: lot of MST3K a lot.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I kind of have been, too.
- 8:50Speaker 11: There's a friend that's been like, hey, let's play these,
- 8:52Speaker 11: and they're always on in the background now, and they're
- 8:54Speaker 11: so awesome.
- 8:55Speaker 12: Yeah, it's good.
- 8:57Speaker 8: Being a lazy person as I am, they're good background noise,
- 9:01Speaker 8: but you can still pick up on the laughs. So
- 9:05Speaker 8: that's my hipster cred, I guess, right there.
- 9:08Speaker 11: What's funny with those, like, if you have it on
- 9:09Speaker 11: in the background, you'll almost tune out the movie entirely,
- 9:12Speaker 11: and you'll just pick up on the jokes, which is
- 9:14Speaker 11: kind of even more fun, really.
- 9:15Speaker 8: Yeah, and all the movies are kind of exactly the
- 9:17Speaker 8: same anyway. But I did stumble upon something from the 70s.
- 9:23Speaker 8: It's the Village People movie. It's called, yeah, Can't Stop
- 9:27Speaker 8: the Music. I don't know how I stumbled upon it,
- 9:30Speaker 8: but I think after watching it, I got a raging
- 9:36Speaker 8: case of AIDS from it.
- 9:38Speaker 12: That's how freakingly gay it is.
- 9:40Speaker 11: I mean, you really have to wear protection when you
- 9:43Speaker 11: watch certain movies.
- 9:44Speaker 12: I mean, there's this one sequence called Do the Milkshake
- 9:48Speaker 12: on it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And it's, yeah, there's no straightness there.
- 9:54Speaker 8: They're in their regular costumes, but there are silver versions
- 9:58Speaker 8: of them. and it's this very lascivious dance called the
- 10:04Speaker 8: milkshake where it's just a lot of grinding and thrusting
- 10:08Speaker 8: and the lyrics are supposed to be subtle but they're
- 10:11Speaker 8: not and just the imagery of just this milkshake like
- 10:16Speaker 8: material squirting like splashing everywhere and it is needless to
- 10:22Speaker 8: say there's a lot of glitter but it's like one
- 10:26Speaker 8: of those things you can just turn your mind off
- 10:28Speaker 8: and just enjoy it for what it is yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 11: Ain't nothing wrong with the milkshake you just gotta pick
- 10:34Speaker 11: your milkshake i suppose.
- 10:36Speaker 8: Yeah exactly and then afterwards after watching it you take
- 10:38Speaker 8: your azt break and uh and handle that shit you
- 10:42Speaker 8: know time for your own milkshake it's cool i mean
- 10:46Speaker 8: So that was a nice contrast between what I've been
- 10:48Speaker 8: watching and what Ken has been watching.
- 10:50Speaker 9: I was going to say, like, you know, spaghetti westerns
- 10:53Speaker 9: and stuff like that, and, well, Can't Stop the Music
- 10:56Speaker 9: is pretty far from that.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Who doesn't like spaghetti and milkshakes? Come on.
- 10:59Speaker 9: Yeah, right. I think I just threw up in my
- 11:02Speaker 9: mouth a little bit.
- 11:05Speaker 11: Well, I guess about the only thing I've seen in
- 11:08Speaker 11: the last few weeks, we'll take it down a whole
- 11:10Speaker 11: other dark path. I just watched the new version of Oldboy.
- 11:15Speaker 11: Have you seen that?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 11:16Speaker 9: How is that?
- 11:17Speaker 3: That's the thing.
- 11:18Speaker 11: I think I'm going to be in the minority because
- 11:20Speaker 11: I thought it was pretty damn good, actually.
- 11:21Speaker 10: Okay.
- 11:22Speaker 9: All right.
- 11:22Speaker 11: I mean, everybody wants to hate on it because it's
- 11:24Speaker 11: a remake. Everybody wants to hate on it because it's
- 11:26Speaker 11: very Americanized now.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And they can't deal with it.
- 11:28Speaker 11: But I'm like, those performances are so good. Like, who
- 11:32Speaker 11: would have thought I would have liked an Olsen that
- 11:35Speaker 11: much and it would be a new one? And then
- 11:37Speaker 11: Josh Brolin, like, just fucking brings it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Like, he is.
- 11:41Speaker 11: so committed to this role. He totally owns up to
- 11:44Speaker 11: the fact that this character's an asshole. And in the beginning, he.
- 11:47Speaker 3: He plays it so well.
- 11:49Speaker 12: Josh Brolin is kind of an asshole anyway.
- 11:51Speaker 3: It's perfect casting.
- 11:52Speaker 12: How much is it really acting?
- 11:55Speaker 9: No far stretch, yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I think that's what I liked about it. It's so
- 11:59Speaker 3: perfect casting.
- 12:00Speaker 11: It's like they find him, and he totally commits to that,
- 12:04Speaker 11: but then he also, once you get into the rebuilding
- 12:07Speaker 11: himself and sort of reform, like, again, in the beginning,
- 12:10Speaker 11: there's these shots of him with the shirt off, and
- 12:12Speaker 11: he's a mess, and he's just such... So he totally, like,
- 12:16Speaker 11: physically transforms himself. As the movie goes on, he's later, like.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Fucking abs.
- 12:20Speaker 11: And I'm just like, what the hell? Like, you're, like, 50-something, right?
- 12:24Speaker 11: I was like, he's in a really good shape. And
- 12:27Speaker 11: another one I didn't expect was, like, they still do
- 12:30Speaker 11: that big section in the middle with the fighting. Oh, really?
- 12:32Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:33Speaker 3: He totally commits to that.
- 12:34Speaker 13: Like, he is.
- 12:35Speaker 11: Like, I'm kind of seeing, like, a whole new Liam
- 12:37Speaker 11: Neeson career coming from him of, like, badass action, old
- 12:40Speaker 11: dude kicking ass kind of thing.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Because, you know.
- 12:44Speaker 9: Every year, right around February, there's a Liam Neeson takes
- 12:47Speaker 9: on somebody.
- 12:48Speaker 11: It's the lull of like, okay, Oscars. Everybody trying to
- 12:52Speaker 11: get their Oscar movies out. It's over now. It's not
- 12:55Speaker 11: really the... I mean, summer gets earlier and earlier. Now
- 12:57Speaker 11: it's like May. But it's like you've still got those
- 12:59Speaker 11: four months of like, what do we put on the
- 13:00Speaker 11: screens now?
- 13:01Speaker 3: Liam Neeson kicking ass.
- 13:03Speaker 9: That's it. If it's a bear or a wolf or...
- 13:06Speaker 9: or a plane full of whatever.
- 13:08Speaker 11: Those wolves kidnapped his daughter. That wasn't cool, man.
- 13:12Speaker 12: It has to be one word. Unstoppable, taken.
- 13:15Speaker 14: Fight.
- 13:18Speaker 11: Punch.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Kick-ass. Wait, there already is a kick-ass.
- 13:20Speaker 9: Never mind. There is a kick-ass, yeah.
- 13:22Speaker 11: But yeah I mean I didn't expect him to be
- 13:24Speaker 11: that physically committed to like the fight scenes too I
- 13:27Speaker 11: mean they sort of one that's sort of famous the
- 13:29Speaker 11: tail end of the big one is sort of cut
- 13:31Speaker 11: short but even that is cut short in a really
- 13:33Speaker 11: clever way like it's all editing and like the way
- 13:37Speaker 11: that he does it is really impressive so it's like
- 13:40Speaker 11: people are kind of hitting myths with Spike Lee as
- 13:41Speaker 11: a director I mean I think he's solid at the
- 13:43Speaker 11: basics he's gotten less and less creative sometimes like if
- 13:48Speaker 11: you look at his old stuff versus the stuff he
- 13:49Speaker 11: does now he's gotten and maybe it's just because he's
- 13:51Speaker 11: more established as a filmmaker and he does things by
- 13:54Speaker 11: more of a system now than you know kind of
- 13:56Speaker 11: winging it like he used to do when he was
- 13:57Speaker 11: a kid but but there's still some really good stuff
- 14:00Speaker 11: he does these like when they get into like the
- 14:02Speaker 11: the whole Chinatown thing and he's like going there hanging
- 14:05Speaker 11: around and like they do these weird sweeping shots through
- 14:09Speaker 11: the there's like this big structure and this arch and
- 14:11Speaker 11: they keep going around kind of working around it I
- 14:13Speaker 11: guess it was all crane work but like the way
- 14:15Speaker 11: that he shoots that stuff he's still got some creativity
- 14:18Speaker 11: to him and the way he blocks the fight scenes
- 14:20Speaker 11: they're choreographed perfectly so it's like He's working with the
- 14:23Speaker 11: fight choreographer to shoot.
- 14:24Speaker 3: It really well. So he still does some good stuff.
- 14:27Speaker 3: That's interesting.
- 14:28Speaker 11: I don't hate that part either. Everybody kind of wants
- 14:31Speaker 11: to knock all of the elements in this. They don't
- 14:33Speaker 11: like that it's a remake. They don't love Spike Lee's
- 14:35Speaker 11: filmmaking anymore. But the other thing that I think is
- 14:38Speaker 11: really cool is because I'd seen the original, and I'm like,
- 14:42Speaker 11: to me, they make it almost a different movie.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I mean, it's still pretty close on a lot of elements,
- 14:47Speaker 3: but they change.
- 14:48Speaker 11: enough that it's like it kind of takes on new
- 14:51Speaker 11: meaning especially by the end they really adjust the way
- 14:55Speaker 11: that it ends to the point that you're like it
- 14:57Speaker 11: has a whole different arc to it it has a
- 14:58Speaker 11: whole different meaning for the characters so it's like I
- 15:02Speaker 11: don't know. I was more impressed with it than anything else.
- 15:04Speaker 11: Maybe because I went in kind of guarded. Like, okay,
- 15:07Speaker 11: it's going to be... But I've gotten a lot more. Like,
- 15:11Speaker 11: I'm not near as anti-remakes anymore. Like, I've kind of
- 15:15Speaker 11: come around. And I think most of it's from the show.
- 15:17Speaker 11: We've had so many conversations about people bitching about remakes.
- 15:20Speaker 11: And as it went on, I'm kind of like, why
- 15:23Speaker 11: do we care? And we almost make it so, like,
- 15:27Speaker 11: so holy. You know, it's like, oh, we can't touch that.
- 15:29Speaker 11: Where I'm like, well, why is it different than plays?
- 15:32Speaker 11: i got to that at one point i was like
- 15:34Speaker 11: we we watch a million people do hamlet over and
- 15:36Speaker 11: over and over again but like we can't let them
- 15:38Speaker 11: touch old boy because it's so fucking holy i'm.
- 15:40Speaker 8: Like well my big thing is like when they say
- 15:42Speaker 8: it was an unnecessary remake then what is a necessary
- 15:46Speaker 8: remake remakes the remakes well.
- 15:49Speaker 11: And like that's the thing though like when you watch
- 15:51Speaker 11: somebody do romeo and juliet yeah on the stage and
- 15:54Speaker 11: you'll go back three years later and watch somebody else
- 15:57Speaker 11: do it again i'm like Are you saying that plays
- 15:59Speaker 11: are a more impressive art form than film?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Because I really will argue that.
- 16:03Speaker 11: So I'm like, if it's equally as impressive, why wouldn't
- 16:05Speaker 11: you just give it to somebody else and say, let
- 16:07Speaker 11: me see what you.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Can do with it? I've gotten to that point now,
- 16:09Speaker 3: and I'm kind of like, if.
- 16:10Speaker 11: They can do something creative with it or add something
- 16:13Speaker 11: to the story or a new element, like, I'm kind
- 16:16Speaker 11: of fine with that.
- 16:17Speaker 3: So I've gotten to a whole new level.
- 16:19Speaker 11: With my remakes where I don't really bitch about them anymore.
- 16:22Speaker 11: I'm just like, I can like them or not like them.
- 16:24Speaker 11: I think we're still, you know, we're... It's still your
- 16:26Speaker 11: normal critique kind of thing. But I don't want to
- 16:28Speaker 11: go in that anti anymore. It's like, I don't know.
- 16:31Speaker 11: I think it's a whole new way that people probably
- 16:34Speaker 11: should look at it. I don't think I'm going to
- 16:35Speaker 11: win most people over. Yeah, it's a fight. But for me,
- 16:39Speaker 11: it's like I can go in without so many issues
- 16:43Speaker 11: and kind of enjoy more movies that way.
- 16:46Speaker 3: So I don't know. I think it's a better way
- 16:47Speaker 3: to approach them in my mind.
- 16:49Speaker 9: Yeah, that's really fascinating because you get kind of wrapped
- 16:53Speaker 9: up in the hate of a lot of that stuff.
- 16:56Speaker 11: Especially in this fan circle that we kind of run in,
- 16:59Speaker 11: there's a lot of remake hate.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Yeah, because I'm trying to think now, too, with a
- 17:04Speaker 9: movie like Only God Forgives, too, it's not necessarily a remake,
- 17:08Speaker 9: but people went into it expecting a certain thing because
- 17:11Speaker 9: of the posters and whatever. I still haven't seen it yet,
- 17:14Speaker 9: but I've heard a couple of people talk about how
- 17:18Speaker 9: the Ryan Gosling character isn't really the hero. isn't really
- 17:22Speaker 9: the focal point of the movie, like everybody thought he was.
- 17:25Speaker 9: It's the Taiwanese cop, like detective, that's really the hero.
- 17:31Speaker 9: So if you think about it as a Taiwanese Dirty
- 17:33Speaker 9: Harry that just happens to have Ryan Gosling in it,
- 17:36Speaker 9: it's a different perspective. It's an interesting kind of idea.
- 17:39Speaker 9: But because of the hate that you hear from everybody else,
- 17:41Speaker 9: then I'm just like, well, forget it. And that was
- 17:44Speaker 9: the way the old boy, I'm like, I'd seen the original,
- 17:46Speaker 9: loved the original, I'm like, Josh Brolin, I mean, Jonah
- 17:49Speaker 9: Hex wasn't that far, you know, removed in my mind.
- 17:52Speaker 9: So I'm like, what's the point, you know? And Spike
- 17:55Speaker 9: Lee has been kind of in a weird flux, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 9: for years. And so I was like, yeah, I'll just
- 18:00Speaker 9: give up on it. But no, you've won me over,
- 18:03Speaker 9: my friend.
- 18:04Speaker 11: I mean, it's definitely worth watching. Again, I don't feel
- 18:06Speaker 11: like everybody's going to love it. Everybody's still going to
- 18:08Speaker 11: have it. And I've heard a lot of people still like,
- 18:10Speaker 11: I didn't hate it, but it wasn't great, and I
- 18:12Speaker 11: liked the other one better.
- 18:13Speaker 3: But I'm like, to me, it's a different movie.
- 18:15Speaker 11: By the time you get to the end, it's a
- 18:16Speaker 11: different movie.
- 18:17Speaker 3: They've changed several key.
- 18:19Speaker 11: I'm like, again, the arc is still basically the same
- 18:22Speaker 11: for the story, but the reasoning is different. And then
- 18:25Speaker 11: as you get into the end, some of even the character.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Motivations are totally different.
- 18:30Speaker 11: So it really kind of changes the dynamic of it
- 18:32Speaker 11: all by the end. So to me, it's worth seeing,
- 18:35Speaker 11: even if you're a fan of the other one, just
- 18:36Speaker 11: to watch how creatively they adjust the story. Interesting.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Again, sometimes people just like to bitch about that.
- 18:42Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, that's just it.
- 18:45Speaker 8: Hey man, they raped my childhood with that remake.
- 18:51Speaker 11: That's what we say every time they do a remake.
- 18:54Speaker 11: And I'm like, your childhood's fine. Go watch your VHS
- 18:57Speaker 11: version if you're that old school.
- 18:58Speaker 9: But now on the other side of that argument, they
- 19:01Speaker 9: have movie screenings here at the convention this weekend. And
- 19:06Speaker 9: I did happen to see a remake of Patrick, the
- 19:09Speaker 9: old 70s Australian horror flick. And as a kid, the original,
- 19:14Speaker 9: you know, it was a slow burn. It was weird,
- 19:16Speaker 9: you know, because I'm like, what is this? They're not English.
- 19:19Speaker 9: They're not British. And they're not American. I don't know
- 19:21Speaker 9: what these people are. You know, I'm like eight years
- 19:23Speaker 9: old watching it on CBS late night when they used
- 19:25Speaker 9: to show horror movies at late night on the weekends.
- 19:27Speaker 9: And I'm like, what is this? And then there's, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 9: a surprise in the ending that I was like, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 9: as a kid, you know, made that a favorite movie,
- 19:34Speaker 9: you know. And so they had this remake, which is
- 19:37Speaker 9: by the director of the documentary Not Quite Hollywood, which
- 19:42Speaker 9: is all about exploitation. And so I went in there
- 19:46Speaker 9: with high hopes because this guy has a love for
- 19:49Speaker 9: those movies. and, you know, respects those things. And it
- 19:52Speaker 9: was just, you know, more is more, you know, and
- 19:57Speaker 9: it was like I was saying earlier that jump scares,
- 20:00Speaker 9: if you like, you know, one, then how about a hundred,
- 20:03Speaker 9: you know, because, yeah, that's what he was going to
- 20:04Speaker 9: give you.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Overkill at that point.
- 20:06Speaker 9: Right, yeah. So I just, I got kind of, old quickly,
- 20:10Speaker 9: and it was disappointing. But, again, you know, there are
- 20:13Speaker 9: other people, like I saw with two friends that had
- 20:14Speaker 9: never seen their first one, and they loved it. They
- 20:16Speaker 9: thought it was, you know, hilarious, you know, and I'm like, well,
- 20:19Speaker 9: that's not mine, but all right. So, yeah, to each their...
- 20:24Speaker 9: their own i guess but.
- 20:25Speaker 11: Yeah it is it is funny we we kind of
- 20:27Speaker 11: bring our own baggage to movies anyway whether we whether
- 20:29Speaker 11: we mean to or not it's so like it's just
- 20:32Speaker 11: so like constant like you can't fight it it's so
- 20:34Speaker 11: it's subconscious like you don't even know but like i
- 20:37Speaker 11: guess it is weird that now we have these remakes
- 20:40Speaker 11: so there's kids coming up that they're you know that
- 20:42Speaker 11: that carrie remake i was talking about earlier it's like
- 20:45Speaker 11: that's gonna be the carrie for a whole different generation
- 20:47Speaker 11: And they'll probably, you know, unless their mom goes, hey, look,
- 20:50Speaker 11: I saw this one when I was a kid. Like,
- 20:52Speaker 11: they won't know of it or they'll just stumble on
- 20:54Speaker 11: it later and go, when did this happen? So, I mean,
- 20:57Speaker 11: it is a different experience for each generation. And I guess, again,
- 21:02Speaker 11: I'm almost of, like, why are we damning their version?
- 21:05Speaker 11: Even if we think it's bad, it's, like, it's their
- 21:07Speaker 11: experience and their.
- 21:08Speaker 3: First time through. So, I don't know.
- 21:11Speaker 11: I'm trying to form a different opinion about this kind
- 21:13Speaker 11: of stuff.
- 21:14Speaker 9: It's an upward battle, but I admire that because, yeah,
- 21:17Speaker 9: I'm slowly coming around to that.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I can still not like a lot of them.
- 21:21Speaker 8: I realize I have to avoid the Internet for movie
- 21:24Speaker 8: recommendations as much as they help. They build up expectations.
- 21:29Speaker 8: Maybe that's probably my fault, but a lot of my friends,
- 21:34Speaker 8: especially on Facebook, a lot of them are movie fanboys.
- 21:39Speaker 8: and they gush over movies, such as the people I'm
- 21:43Speaker 8: talking to right now.
- 21:44Speaker 3: The kind of people who go to conventions for movies.
- 21:47Speaker 8: But they fanboy over things a lot, and they build
- 21:50Speaker 8: up expectations. And there's no way your experience will meet
- 21:56Speaker 8: up those expectations. You get kind of mad at your
- 21:59Speaker 8: friends for building up so much.
- 22:02Speaker 11: And I get to the point, again, now we're just
- 22:04Speaker 11: so saturated by media 24-7.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Like, every version of it. Like, on TV, in the internet.
- 22:09Speaker 11: And I'm just like, now I almost know so much
- 22:12Speaker 11: about stuff going in without even trying. Like, I'm just,
- 22:15Speaker 11: I'll listen to shows or I'll watch something on TV. And, like,
- 22:17Speaker 11: before I know it, I'm like, I already kind of
- 22:18Speaker 11: know everything that's going on in this movie. Like, I
- 22:21Speaker 11: already know so many people's expectations weren't met. And, like,
- 22:24Speaker 11: I've already heard so many other people's takes that I'm like,
- 22:26Speaker 11: it's hard for me to have my own original now
- 22:28Speaker 11: because there's so much.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Other stuff piled on there.
- 22:30Speaker 6: So.
- 22:31Speaker 11: again we've we've changed the movie going experience by like
- 22:35Speaker 11: heaping all this interaction with everybody in the world i
- 22:38Speaker 11: mean now that we're attached to everybody in the world
- 22:40Speaker 11: it's it's different now i.
- 22:42Speaker 12: Don't know get off my lawn okay you kid.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Well i say that all the time you kids get
- 22:47Speaker 3: out of my yard.
- 22:48Speaker 8: Where's my sausage to carry your checks.
- 22:53Speaker 9: No you know it's it's like uh i'm as guilty
- 22:56Speaker 9: as anybody else especially with the marvel movies because i'm
- 22:58Speaker 9: a big marvel you know nerd but The Spider-Man movie,
- 23:02Speaker 9: I swear to God, I've seen the whole movie now in, like,
- 23:04Speaker 9: two-minute bites.
- 23:05Speaker 6: You know?
- 23:06Speaker 3: The new one? Yeah, you know. The first new one?
- 23:09Speaker 9: Yeah, right.
- 23:10Speaker 3: The second new one?
- 23:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Reboot?
- 23:13Speaker 12: It's not a remake, okay?
- 23:15Speaker 3: It's a reimagining. I like that we keep making up
- 23:17Speaker 3: new words for this nonsense.
- 23:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it's just, you know, I mean, when was the
- 23:21Speaker 9: other ones? Like, you know, not even, well, there actually
- 23:23Speaker 9: have been, like, ten years ago. Time flies when you
- 23:25Speaker 9: get older. But, yeah, you know, I'm just like, okay,
- 23:28Speaker 9: I get it. You had my money at the title, probably,
- 23:32Speaker 9: you know. But now I'm kind of like, well, I
- 23:34Speaker 9: don't have to see it right away because I know
- 23:36Speaker 9: kind of what it's like. And I just let the
- 23:37Speaker 9: kids go and see it beforehand. But, you know, I've
- 23:40Speaker 9: tried to do my best now to not watch trailers.
- 23:43Speaker 9: It's gotten to that.
- 23:45Speaker 11: And it's sad because I loved trailers. I used to
- 23:48Speaker 11: love trailers. And now it's almost to the point, I
- 23:50Speaker 11: guess you can go and watch them after the fact,
- 23:52Speaker 11: which sort of is working backwards.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Because to me, there's still an art to making a
- 23:55Speaker 3: good trailer.
- 23:56Speaker 11: That's like being lost because now nobody wants to watch
- 23:58Speaker 11: them anymore because they ruin everything in the trailer.
- 24:00Speaker 9: Yeah, they spoil so much, you know?
- 24:03Speaker 12: Now there's buzz for the trailers, and they're like, did
- 24:05Speaker 12: you see the trailer? It was so awesome. It was
- 24:08Speaker 12: so great.
- 24:09Speaker 8: And then, like, when you see the trailer, the buzz
- 24:11Speaker 8: has built up so much for the trailer.
- 24:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 3: It's like, did you see that part where it says,
- 24:16Speaker 3: coming soon at the end? It was amazing.
- 24:19Speaker 9: Up next on Entertainment Tonight, 10 seconds of a trailer.
- 24:22Speaker 8: Like, when the Godzilla trailer came up, my Facebook, timeline
- 24:26Speaker 8: just lit up like everybody was posting about.
- 24:30Speaker 3: It yeah We did that.
- 24:33Speaker 11: Yeah, if you were listeners, we were back there in
- 24:35Speaker 11: the middle of that Oscar nonsense. Patrick just stopped, and
- 24:38Speaker 11: he's like, have you seen the new Godzilla trailer? And
- 24:40Speaker 11: we stopped everything we were doing, and he watched it.
- 24:43Speaker 3: And then he went, we're watching that again. And then, like,
- 24:46Speaker 3: he went through it again.
- 24:47Speaker 11: We froze the frame where Godzilla's, like, you know, kind
- 24:49Speaker 11: of roaring at the screen.
- 24:51Speaker 3: And we're like, look at him.
- 24:52Speaker 9: Look at him.
- 24:53Speaker 11: Like, he's losing his damn mind for Godzilla. So I'm
- 24:56Speaker 11: just like, it's.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Still out there.
- 24:58Speaker 11: The fans are still there, and they still get all
- 25:00Speaker 11: worked up over shit like that.
- 25:01Speaker 7: So.
- 25:02Speaker 11: I mean, I guess it works, but in a way,
- 25:04Speaker 11: that's actually not a bad trailer because they don't show you.
- 25:08Speaker 11: There's that half-second shot of Godzilla, and that's it. And
- 25:11Speaker 11: that's the money.
- 25:12Speaker 3: That's what you're going for, and they really don't show
- 25:14Speaker 3: you much.
- 25:15Speaker 9: And they're smart, too, in the way that they show
- 25:18Speaker 9: the people reacting. There's a lot of tension. There's a
- 25:22Speaker 9: lot of the big-eyed fear.
- 25:24Speaker 3: And awe of it.
- 25:25Speaker 9: Yeah. And then you get the moments like the military,
- 25:28Speaker 9: the guy's parachuting in, and you're like, I don't know
- 25:30Speaker 9: if they're going to parachute straight into his mouth and try.
- 25:32Speaker 3: To blow him up.
- 25:33Speaker 9: I mean, you know, it's a suicide mission. What is this?
- 25:35Speaker 9: But it's got me going, you know.
- 25:36Speaker 11: Let me ask you, because we had the same thing.
- 25:38Speaker 11: Why do they have the red smoke coming off them?
- 25:41Speaker 9: Yeah, that's maybe.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Because our answer was because it looks cool.
- 25:44Speaker 9: It looks cool. It's like, look at me. I'm dying
- 25:46Speaker 9: for you. Notice.
- 25:48Speaker 11: But I'm like, if anybody out there works in some
- 25:50Speaker 11: sort of military setup, and that's the real reason, write
- 25:53Speaker 11: in and let us know.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Because I'm like, I agree. It looks awesome. That's the
- 25:57Speaker 3: main reason as far as I could tell.
- 25:58Speaker 9: Oh, absolutely. Any kind of destruction on a massive scale
- 26:02Speaker 9: like that, and you throw Godzilla in, and then you
- 26:04Speaker 9: actually throw it in so that he's something to be
- 26:07Speaker 9: frightened of, which even in his movies.
- 26:10Speaker 3: After a while, it's just pro wrestling.
- 26:12Speaker 9: Yeah, right, yeah, with a tail, which is awesome. But yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 9: to see actual fear is kind of interesting with those movies.
- 26:18Speaker 11: That's what you need to go back to if they're
- 26:20Speaker 11: going to reboot it, as we've just said. I mean,
- 26:23Speaker 11: you do need to take it back to the beginning and, like,
- 26:25Speaker 11: try to put out all that. I mean, you've got,
- 26:28Speaker 11: how many years now? 40, 50, like, of them, like,
- 26:32Speaker 11: doing all these cheesy ones and doing all these, like,
- 26:34Speaker 11: you know, again, it is sort of pro wrestling with
- 26:36Speaker 11: giant suits as you get into those cheesier ones in
- 26:39Speaker 11: the middle there. So it's, like, if you get back
- 26:41Speaker 11: to the beginning, like, it's a scary concept. And, like,
- 26:44Speaker 11: we love, I guess, the world over, but definitely in
- 26:46Speaker 11: this country we love wrestling. destruction and cities being completely
- 26:50Speaker 11: destroyed and national landmarks being torn apart so it's like.
- 26:53Speaker 8: I just wonder after pacific rim came out and how
- 26:56Speaker 8: everybody loved that if people are going to be comparing
- 26:58Speaker 8: godzilla to pacific rim because now like there's like a
- 27:03Speaker 8: interest again like kaiju and giant monsters and just.
- 27:06Speaker 9: I think that just fueled it really absolutely it was
- 27:09Speaker 9: a good Pacific Rim was a good intro to a
- 27:11Speaker 9: lot of that.
- 27:11Speaker 3: It's like priming the pump.
- 27:13Speaker 11: Because I felt like Pacific Rim was fun, but it's
- 27:15Speaker 11: certainly not a perfect movie. It's got a lot of, again,
- 27:18Speaker 11: almost more structuring issues. The fights are kind of cool,
- 27:21Speaker 11: but I'm like... It kind of needed more character development.
- 27:24Speaker 11: It needed to be sort of fleshed out a little more.
- 27:26Speaker 12: I think that's the point of it.
- 27:28Speaker 8: Like you said about the red fire in Godzilla, it
- 27:31Speaker 8: just looks cool.
- 27:32Speaker 9: And it did.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I like Pacific Rim, but I didn't love it, and
- 27:34Speaker 3: I think that's why.
- 27:35Speaker 11: Where I think with this one, if he wants to
- 27:37Speaker 11: put more time in with Cranston, if he wants to
- 27:41Speaker 11: do some character development and give us a reason to
- 27:43Speaker 11: care about these characters, because we really didn't have much
- 27:45Speaker 11: of that in Pacific Rim, we're like, Well, that girl's cute,
- 27:48Speaker 11: so we'll get on her side. This guy's almost got
- 27:50Speaker 11: a backstory, but not really. But he's our hero, right?
- 27:53Speaker 8: I want the Godzilla character to be developed more. I
- 27:55Speaker 8: want to find out his motivations and why he's destroying
- 27:59Speaker 8: the city.
- 28:00Speaker 3: I want a whole flashback scene.
- 28:01Speaker 9: What made you so angry, Godzilla? Who hurt you?
- 28:05Speaker 3: Sorry about those nukes, by the way.
- 28:07Speaker 11: That might have had a little something to do with it.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Whoops.
- 28:11Speaker 9: Whoops, humanity.
- 28:15Speaker 11: But i don't know i mean there's there's still it
- 28:17Speaker 11: looks pretty cool so i hope they put a little
- 28:20Speaker 11: and this this guy the director seems like he's invested
- 28:23Speaker 11: like he seems like he loves the property and i
- 28:25Speaker 11: think that's what you need to make a good movie
- 28:27Speaker 11: like that oh.
- 28:27Speaker 9: That's it somebody that actually cares about what they're doing you.

- 32:55Speaker 9: F * * * ing scary.
- 32:57Speaker 11: Why would anybody do this?
- 33:06Speaker 9: You're next.
- 33:34Speaker 12: All right.
- 33:36Speaker 15: So the other big highlight of this weekend is we
- 33:40Speaker 15: hung out with actors Elsie Holt and Lane Hughes.
- 33:58Speaker 11: Both of them have known director Adam Wingard for years,
- 34:01Speaker 11: and since then, each of them has turned up in
- 34:03Speaker 11: one of the VHS movies. And these days, they're probably
- 34:06Speaker 11: known best for being two of the three killers in
- 34:08Speaker 11: Your Next. Yes, they would be the Fox Mask and
- 34:11Speaker 11: the Lamb Mask, respectively. So I thought while we were there,
- 34:14Speaker 11: we would sit down and not only talk about how
- 34:16Speaker 11: they got into filmmaking, but also, because they've kind of
- 34:19Speaker 11: worked in horror a good portion of their career.
- 34:22Speaker 3: just kind of get their take on the state of
- 34:24Speaker 3: horror as it is. It feels like there's a.
- 34:26Speaker 11: Lot of things going on in the horror world today,
- 34:28Speaker 11: and changes that have slowly taken place, and I kind
- 34:31Speaker 11: of wanted to get their take on it as well.
- 34:33Speaker 11: So let's go check in with actors Elsie Holt and
- 34:35Speaker 11: Lane Hughes. Alright, so we're here with Elsie Holt and
- 34:45Speaker 11: Lane Hughes, and I guess I wanted to kind of
- 34:49Speaker 11: get into an intro with you guys and film in general, um,
- 34:53Speaker 11: were both of you from Alabama?
- 34:55Speaker 13: Yeah, originally, um, we're both from Alabama. I'm from, uh,
- 35:00Speaker 13: the Montgomery area.
- 35:01Speaker 14: I'm from, uh, this is Lane Hughes. I'm from a
- 35:04Speaker 14: small town called Hartsell, Alabama that no one's probably ever
- 35:08Speaker 14: heard of.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And you don't really want to go there. Um, but, uh, yeah,
- 35:11Speaker 1: we're both.
- 35:12Speaker 14: Alabama and, uh, Adam Wingard, is another Alabama uh he's
- 35:18Speaker 14: a writer director producer I guess auteur at this point
- 35:20Speaker 14: you know because he's acted now and stuff and so yeah.
- 35:24Speaker 11: So I being from nowhere near LA myself uh I
- 35:29Speaker 11: I kind of wonder sometimes what leads those people that
- 35:32Speaker 11: are sort of stuck out there and away from it
- 35:35Speaker 11: all into that area is it something you as a
- 35:37Speaker 11: kid were like drawn to cinema like in that sense
- 35:41Speaker 11: or I don't know did you feel it early on as.
- 35:43Speaker 13: Far yeah I was just always I loved um uh, movies,
- 35:47Speaker 13: all kinds of movies. And I still love all kinds
- 35:49Speaker 13: of movies, but horror is something I, you know, was
- 35:52Speaker 13: probably a first love of mine watching the movies. Um, like,
- 35:56Speaker 13: you know, early slasher films, the original Friday, the 13th,
- 36:01Speaker 13: the first four, I like, um, I like, uh, you know, Halloween,
- 36:06Speaker 13: but then, uh, the dorm, the drip blood, uh, the initiation,
- 36:11Speaker 13: the burning, um, you know, uh, Those kind of films
- 36:16Speaker 13: I still love. So, yeah, that was my interest originally.
- 36:23Speaker 14: Well, Elsie, you did kind of like you and another
- 36:27Speaker 14: great actor we've worked with, Brandon Carroll. He just did
- 36:30Speaker 14: The Devil's Knot, which is like the West Memphis 3 film.
- 36:34Speaker 1: And he was in.
- 36:35Speaker 14: Walking Dead, Homesick with Elsie Adams, first production. And he
- 36:40Speaker 14: was in Pop Skull with you and me. And that's
- 36:43Speaker 14: where I got my start into acting. But what I
- 36:45Speaker 14: was saying is you guys both did stuff in, like,
- 36:49Speaker 14: theater in high school and theater, you know, in college, right?
- 36:53Speaker 13: Yeah, that's where I started was in theater. We would do, which,
- 36:57Speaker 13: you know, you get a lot of opportunity in theater.
- 37:00Speaker 13: In a sense, a lot more than I've gotten in
- 37:03Speaker 13: the movies because in the movies I'm a horror guy.
- 37:05Speaker 13: But in the theater I did, you know, comedies, Shakespeare.
- 37:09Speaker 13: I did Noel Coward, Christopher Durang. a bunch of old
- 37:13Speaker 13: school plays. But you also learn about how to build
- 37:17Speaker 13: a character and stuff like that, which I would love
- 37:20Speaker 13: to have more rehearsal in movies, but that's just not
- 37:22Speaker 13: something that happens ever.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Yeah, well, the way, like I always liked art.
- 37:28Speaker 14: Like I was a big sports guy, but I always
- 37:31Speaker 14: loved music, was a big music lover. And when I
- 37:33Speaker 14: got kind of out of sports, when I was in
- 37:36Speaker 14: my mid teens and I started picking up a guitar
- 37:38Speaker 14: and a four track recorder and getting more into just
- 37:41Speaker 14: art and films and had a friend named Andy and
- 37:44Speaker 14: he and I would just make little backyard stuff.
- 37:46Speaker 1: And, um, but I, I mean, I quit the high
- 37:49Speaker 1: school play.
- 37:50Speaker 9: Okay.
- 37:50Speaker 14: Because I was so nervous and shy and only I
- 37:52Speaker 14: was a thug and I will always be cast. Like
- 37:55Speaker 14: Elsie said, we're, we're, We're villains, you know? I mean,
- 37:58Speaker 14: we're anti-heroes.
- 38:00Speaker 13: I would love to play the boy next door.
- 38:01Speaker 9: Yeah, that would be great.
- 38:02Speaker 13: But that will never happen.
- 38:03Speaker 1: It will never happen for us. Yeah, it will never
- 38:06Speaker 1: happen for us.
- 38:06Speaker 8: No.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Unless we write it and fund it ourselves.
- 38:09Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 1: You know, but... Which.
- 38:12Speaker 13: It's fun to play the bad guy. It is. When
- 38:14Speaker 13: you play the bad guy, you get to do everything
- 38:17Speaker 13: you would never get to do in life. So you
- 38:19Speaker 13: get to live precariously. And in a way, you get
- 38:22Speaker 13: to vent a lot of the things you could never
- 38:25Speaker 13: vent before. You know, it's great anger management, I think.
- 38:30Speaker 9: I agree.
- 38:30Speaker 1: I agree. So I was supposed to say this line
- 38:33Speaker 1: in high school, like, hey, you give me that purse.
- 38:36Speaker 14: I couldn't even say that, okay? And then when I
- 38:38Speaker 14: met Adam, he had finished up Homesick. He was finishing
- 38:44Speaker 14: it up, and we got this idea for Pop School,
- 38:47Speaker 14: and I co-wrote it and co-produced it. And when we
- 38:50Speaker 14: were casting it, I was like, who's going to play
- 38:54Speaker 14: the lead?
- 38:54Speaker 1: And he's like, you're going to play the lead.
- 38:56Speaker 14: I thought, you're out of your mind. I can't do that.
- 38:59Speaker 14: And he was like, I think you have it in you.
- 39:02Speaker 14: And so that's how I got started. And then, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 14: I wasn't bad at it, but I wasn't great. And
- 39:09Speaker 14: I still, that's how I consider myself. But I've learned
- 39:12Speaker 14: from Elsie and by Brandon Carroll and being around these
- 39:16Speaker 14: people and asking them questions and, you know, and then,
- 39:19Speaker 14: you know, watching your favorite actors and just picking up
- 39:22Speaker 14: on things from whether they're talking about it in interviews
- 39:25Speaker 14: or magazines.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Like, or just actually when you watch them.
- 39:29Speaker 9: Like how.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Does that guy react to that? Like, cause I like him. Like,
- 39:33Speaker 1: how does he do it? Oh, that's, that's kind of
- 39:35Speaker 1: what he's doing, you know?
- 39:37Speaker 13: So, but the great thing too about Popsicle is a
- 39:40Speaker 13: lot of that movie was improvised, right?
- 39:42Speaker 1: So you got, we had an A to B, but
- 39:45Speaker 1: it was up to us how to get to from.
- 39:46Speaker 13: A to B, right? And that was the first time
- 39:49Speaker 13: I'd ever done anything where there was a script, but
- 39:52Speaker 13: there wasn't necessarily set things in terms of dialogue and stuff.
- 39:57Speaker 13: And Adam would be like, well, just kind of do this,
- 39:59Speaker 13: do that. So you would go, oh, okay. Well, we'll
- 40:01Speaker 13: try that. Was it by design? Yeah, no, that was
- 40:03Speaker 13: by design. Because you were on the fly. As far
- 40:06Speaker 13: as I know.
- 40:07Speaker 1: That was how we wanted to make the film.
- 40:09Speaker 13: And it turned out great. He had a shitload of footage.
- 40:12Speaker 14: Oh, yeah, like something like, I don't think he likes
- 40:15Speaker 14: to discuss it at this point in his career, but.
- 40:17Speaker 1: We had like 90 DV tapes.
- 40:19Speaker 11: How long did you shoot?
- 40:21Speaker 1: Two years.
- 40:22Speaker 13: Yeah. For me, it was different for Lane because he's
- 40:25Speaker 13: the star of the movie, and he lived with him.
- 40:29Speaker 13: But for me, I was the ghost that terrorized Lane.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:32Speaker 13: So I would come in, and then maybe six weeks later,
- 40:37Speaker 13: I'd shoot some more, and then it'd be like four
- 40:38Speaker 13: months later, I'd shoot some more. And I'm like, well,
- 40:41Speaker 13: I'm still shooting pops.
- 40:43Speaker 14: Sometimes it would just be me and Adam and his
- 40:45Speaker 14: little brother shooting. Like, if the fog looked cool outside
- 40:49Speaker 14: at four in the morning, let's go.
- 40:51Speaker 13: Yeah, exactly. There were times we'd be filming, we would
- 40:55Speaker 13: be shooting a scene, and then the next thing you know,
- 40:57Speaker 13: we'd be driving home from shooting the scene, and he'd
- 40:59Speaker 13: be like, hey, I like that. So we'd pull off
- 41:01Speaker 13: to the side of the road and jump out and
- 41:02Speaker 13: then just start shooting stuff that he may or may
- 41:05Speaker 13: not use, you know. But it was very experimental in
- 41:08Speaker 13: that way. That's awesome.
- 41:09Speaker 11: I mean, that's independent filmmaking at its best right there.
- 41:11Speaker 13: It really was at its best. And the whole movie cost, what, $ 3, 000?
- 41:14Speaker 11: $ 3, 000.
- 41:14Speaker 4: Jesus.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:17Speaker 7: That's amazing.
- 41:17Speaker 13: And it's a brilliant movie. It looks fantastic. I love it.
- 41:21Speaker 11: So has that kind of inspired you as far as,
- 41:24Speaker 11: you know, wanting to get into it more? Specifically, like
- 41:26Speaker 11: I was going to ask with you, I mean, was
- 41:29Speaker 11: it different because you said you didn't like the play thing?
- 41:32Speaker 11: Was it different because you didn't have a full audience
- 41:33Speaker 11: there staring at you?
- 41:34Speaker 14: I mean, I was still a nervous wreck, you know,
- 41:38Speaker 14: but Adam, you know, we became good friends.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You know, I trust him.
- 41:42Speaker 14: I still trust him to this day, and he's one
- 41:43Speaker 14: of the only people that when he says, we've got it,
- 41:47Speaker 14: I don't question it or say, well, man, let me
- 41:51Speaker 14: just try one more.
- 41:51Speaker 1: It's just when he says he's got it, he's.
- 41:54Speaker 14: Not going to make you look bad or allow yourself
- 41:56Speaker 14: to be bad because he is the kind of director
- 42:00Speaker 14: that believes that, hey, at the end of the day, it's.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Going to reflect on me, too.
- 42:04Speaker 13: Because he also edits the movies, all of them.
- 42:08Speaker 1: So, you know, total trust.
- 42:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I worked into it.
- 42:12Speaker 14: Plus, like I said, to this day, I mean, I
- 42:14Speaker 14: ask Elsie and Brandon questions all the time, you know,
- 42:17Speaker 14: and I've done a lot more since then, a lot
- 42:19Speaker 14: of shorts, a lot of features. You know, I've done
- 42:23Speaker 14: one or two, three things that weren't horror, you know.
- 42:26Speaker 14: They were just more like indie dramas and stuff, and
- 42:28Speaker 14: I enjoyed those. But even in those, I was kind
- 42:32Speaker 14: of like the asshole, you know what I mean? So
- 42:34Speaker 14: even then, I was kind of a villain, you know.
- 42:36Speaker 13: Yeah, once an asshole, always an asshole.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 42:39Speaker 13: Fighting your character.
- 42:40Speaker 14: Right, but those are, you know, like, I think with film,
- 42:43Speaker 14: the way, when we did Pop Skull and the way,
- 42:45Speaker 14: you know, I Know You're Next is, you know, like,
- 42:49Speaker 14: every film Adam has done that we've been in has
- 42:51Speaker 14: been made outside of a studio and then sold to
- 42:55Speaker 14: a studio through basically going to film festivals.
- 43:00Speaker 1: And I think we really got into, like, watching.
- 43:03Speaker 14: things like Five Easy Pieces and The Trip and Jack
- 43:09Speaker 14: Nicholson is my favorite actor of all time. I think
- 43:10Speaker 14: right now, secondly, I'd have to say Bryan Cranston is
- 43:13Speaker 14: my second favorite actor of all time.
- 43:15Speaker 13: Yeah, he's great.
- 43:18Speaker 14: But we wanted how easy a writer was made. In
- 43:24Speaker 14: the 60s and the 70s, they were doing the same
- 43:27Speaker 14: thing that we were wanting to do now, is just
- 43:30Speaker 14: make cool stuff and then hopefully the studio buys it you.
- 43:36Speaker 13: Know and that's how adam works to this day this
- 43:38Speaker 13: new movie the guest yes is being done the same
- 43:40Speaker 13: way and it i mean it's it's from what i
- 43:43Speaker 13: understand a pretty cool yeah and a bigger budgeted movie
- 43:46Speaker 13: but i don't know.
- 43:48Speaker 11: How you do it with i mean where you get
- 43:50Speaker 11: to that huge level and like you're handing off like
- 43:53Speaker 11: it's different when you you write it and you're the
- 43:55Speaker 11: creator you're there directing it and you know you're editing
- 43:58Speaker 11: it too like you can piece that But to me,
- 44:00Speaker 11: it seems even harder to be able to just hand
- 44:02Speaker 11: it to an editor, even a skilled one, like how
- 44:06Speaker 11: they know to do what you.
- 44:07Speaker 13: Had in mind. I don't think Adam would even want
- 44:09Speaker 13: to do that.
- 44:10Speaker 14: I think now with the directors that are very hands-on,
- 44:16Speaker 14: that let's say a studio, they say, well, we're going
- 44:21Speaker 14: to put this editor on it. Well, I think a
- 44:23Speaker 14: lot of these directors are editing it with the editor,
- 44:27Speaker 14: even if you don't see that in the credits, you know,
- 44:29Speaker 14: edited by Adam Wingard and so-and-so. Like, it's at this point,
- 44:34Speaker 14: they're probably both in the room together, you know, I
- 44:37Speaker 14: would think on the scale. Yeah, because I agree with you.
- 44:40Speaker 14: It's like, you know, I do music. Why would I
- 44:42Speaker 14: want to make and record and write all this stuff
- 44:44Speaker 14: and then be like, you.
- 44:45Speaker 7: Mix it down? I want to mix it.
- 44:47Speaker 11: And as an actor, it kind of makes you worry. Again,
- 44:52Speaker 11: you say you trust Adam, but trying to think, okay,
- 44:55Speaker 11: I did this one bad take, and then I did
- 44:57Speaker 11: these several other good ones, and.
- 44:58Speaker 3: What if they use that one?
- 44:59Speaker 1: What if they like that one, and I despise that one?
- 45:02Speaker 1: Sometimes that happens.
- 45:04Speaker 13: Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:05Speaker 11: Well, I guess you both got involved in the VHS series. Now,
- 45:10Speaker 11: I guess, how did those come about? It is sort
- 45:12Speaker 11: of just... an accumulation of, of different up and coming directors.
- 45:16Speaker 11: And I guess, how did you guys get involved?
- 45:18Speaker 1: VHS, Adam, just Adam and Simon Barrett, who did a
- 45:22Speaker 1: horrible way to die. And, uh, right after horrible way to.
- 45:25Speaker 14: Die, they wanted, uh, they did, uh, I came up
- 45:29Speaker 14: back to Missouri. Uh, that's where that was shot. And
- 45:31Speaker 14: I came back up to Missouri and that's where, uh,
- 45:34Speaker 14: Simon Barrett's from. So he has like, you know, connections
- 45:37Speaker 14: there and stuff like that. And so, um, We did VHS,
- 45:42Speaker 14: and I guess really it was a brainchild of what?
- 45:44Speaker 1: BloodyDisgusting.com?
- 45:46Speaker 13: Yeah, they came up with the idea for it.
- 45:48Speaker 14: To do like a film that's like a, what do
- 45:52Speaker 14: they call it, like serial shorts?
- 45:53Speaker 13: It's an anthology, yeah.
- 45:57Speaker 14: And so, you know, I guess the first one was
- 46:01Speaker 14: lower budgeted than the second one, but the first one
- 46:03Speaker 14: did so well that they brought back certain directors.
- 46:06Speaker 1: You know.
- 46:07Speaker 14: I think people have a misconception that And it kind
- 46:10Speaker 14: of bothers me that they assume that I'm not an actor. Oh,
- 46:14Speaker 14: it's cool that your buddy puts you into these films.
- 46:16Speaker 14: It's like, no, I am a film lover, an actor,
- 46:22Speaker 14: you know, whatever. It's just that he and Simon and
- 46:27Speaker 14: I have developed a relationship. Elsie has the same relationship.
- 46:31Speaker 14: When they're writing things, when they're coming up with ideas,
- 46:33Speaker 14: they know if they need us or they want us
- 46:35Speaker 14: or not. And if we fit something in as soon enough,
- 46:39Speaker 14: they decide, wait, I really hear Lane in my head,
- 46:43Speaker 14: so I'm going to start writing it for Lane.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I really see or hear LC.
- 46:47Speaker 14: I'm going to kind of start writing this geared more
- 46:50Speaker 14: towards him. You know, what I know I want to
- 46:53Speaker 14: see him do or say. And so that's kind of
- 46:55Speaker 14: how it works with casting with us a lot of times.
- 46:59Speaker 11: It does feel like that. Like all these, probably like
- 47:01Speaker 11: the VHS and then even going into your next, it
- 47:04Speaker 11: feels like you guys are sort of creating this little
- 47:06Speaker 11: filmmaking family right it does feel like you're just sort
- 47:09Speaker 11: of pulling from yeah yeah.
- 47:10Speaker 13: Yeah we've most of us have worked on more than
- 47:13Speaker 13: one thing whether it be shorts or features done a
- 47:16Speaker 13: lot of shorts with adam oh yeah both he and
- 47:18Speaker 13: i and then occasionally we'll do a new feature which
- 47:22Speaker 13: you know the features are always a little more fun
- 47:25Speaker 13: because you have more time to play oh yeah yeah
- 47:28Speaker 13: well and then.
- 47:28Speaker 11: I guess do you feel vhs i mean as you
- 47:31Speaker 11: came in to do the second one is it Is
- 47:33Speaker 11: it doing something different than the anthologies in the past?
- 47:37Speaker 13: Yeah, I think that the theme of it is really unique.
- 47:39Speaker 13: I mean, you have wraparound stories and things like Creepshow,
- 47:43Speaker 13: but the wraparound concept of the VHS movies is pretty unique.
- 47:50Speaker 13: And I think that's really what sets it apart. And
- 47:53Speaker 13: then just the fact that they can get directors... Who
- 47:56Speaker 13: were really up and coming.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Right, like spotlight them.
- 47:59Speaker 13: Incredible. Like in the second one, it was, you know,
- 48:01Speaker 13: the guy that did Hobo with a Shotgun.
- 48:02Speaker 14: Or getting like the old schoolers from like Blair Witch Project.
- 48:07Speaker 13: And Simon actually made his directorial debut on the one
- 48:10Speaker 13: that I did. Simon Barrett, the writer and producer of
- 48:15Speaker 13: You're Next and a lot of other movies. Yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 11: It is a lot of crossover because I think Calvin
- 48:21Speaker 11: Lee Reader is in that first one, too.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I love Calvin. Calvin is awesome. Calvin is awesome.
- 48:28Speaker 13: And he's in You're Next as well.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yeah, as the cop at the end.
- 48:31Speaker 11: He's got a little surprise at the end there.
- 48:35Speaker 14: Splat.
- 48:36Speaker 1: What's up, Calvin Reader, man? He's the man, yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 11: He's a lot of fun.
- 48:41Speaker 13: Which, if you think about, you're next as sort of
- 48:43Speaker 13: a smorgasbord of directors.
- 48:45Speaker 6: Right.
- 48:46Speaker 13: Like half the people who are acting and are directors.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Amy Simons, Joe Swanberg.
- 48:49Speaker 13: Yeah, as we were sitting here watching.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Ty West.
- 48:51Speaker 14: Ty West.
- 48:52Speaker 1: He and I have both dabbled in that kind of stuff.
- 48:55Speaker 11: It did sort of create that little family vibe.
- 48:58Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 48:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 49:00Speaker 11: I guess as we get into your next, did that
- 49:04Speaker 11: sort of spin off of the VHS or is it
- 49:06Speaker 11: something that you'd already been working on well before?
- 49:08Speaker 13: I don't think so. I don't think it was anything
- 49:10Speaker 13: really to do with VHS. It was the original idea
- 49:13Speaker 13: that Simon and Adam cooked up.
- 49:15Speaker 14: Yeah, and it was already kind of in like pre-production
- 49:19Speaker 14: before VHS.
- 49:20Speaker 1: VHS was kind of just all of a sudden.
- 49:22Speaker 13: It happened.
- 49:23Speaker 1: It happened.
- 49:24Speaker 13: And that's not as much of a commitment because they
- 49:25Speaker 13: were just doing a short.
- 49:27Speaker 1: They did the wraparound segment.
- 49:29Speaker 14: We did, and I was in the first VHS. And
- 49:33Speaker 14: then your next was literally like two months later, Back
- 49:37Speaker 14: to Missouri.
- 49:38Speaker 13: Because that's where I saw the wraparound story when I
- 49:42Speaker 13: was shooting Your Next.
- 49:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 49:44Speaker 13: So, yeah, I was like, oh, so that's what you
- 49:46Speaker 13: guys did. Right, right. I was like, this is about
- 49:48Speaker 13: starting to make a lot more sense. Right.
- 49:51Speaker 11: So I guess, what did you think when you, I
- 49:53Speaker 11: guess you're brought in on Your Next, or they give
- 49:55Speaker 11: you the script, or I don't know, what were your
- 49:57Speaker 11: thoughts on it initially before, like at that first stage?
- 49:59Speaker 13: I loved it. I thought it was a great script.
- 50:02Speaker 1: I agree. When I read it, I thought it was great.
- 50:05Speaker 1: And then, but.
- 50:07Speaker 14: When I was first told about it, I was told that, like,
- 50:10Speaker 14: you'll be a mask killer. Well, you know, like, Halloween's
- 50:13Speaker 14: my favorite series. I love Michael Myers, I mean, you know,
- 50:16Speaker 14: to death. But, you know, I was almost like, okay, dude, really? Like,
- 50:21Speaker 14: I get that you think it would be cool for
- 50:24Speaker 14: me to do, but, like, we're to the point.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Now where, like, you're going to put me in a mask,
- 50:29Speaker 1: you know? It was just slightly insulting. Then I read
- 50:31Speaker 1: the script, and then I was like, wait a minute.
- 50:34Speaker 14: This is awesome, you know, and I saw where he's
- 50:36Speaker 14: coming from because we, what I've been telling people is
- 50:39Speaker 14: we have a great chance in the film not just
- 50:41Speaker 14: to be like these iconic mask killers, but we actually
- 50:44Speaker 14: get to take off our mask and show emotion and
- 50:46Speaker 14: dialogue and.
- 50:47Speaker 13: Be real cool. Well, they're real because, you know, I mean,
- 50:50Speaker 13: when they get hurt, they scream. You know, it's not
- 50:52Speaker 13: like they're going to walk around with gunshot wounds and shit.
- 50:55Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 50:56Speaker 14: Like, you're going to stab them in the head and
- 50:57Speaker 14: they're going to get right back up. We might get up,
- 50:59Speaker 14: but it might take us a few.
- 51:00Speaker 13: Well, that nail, that nail really hurt.
- 51:02Speaker 11: Right, right.
- 51:04Speaker 13: I actually did step on a nail. Method acting.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Did you step on it?
- 51:08Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Like on accident or purpose?
- 51:10Speaker 13: I stepped on that fucker all the way through my foot. No,
- 51:13Speaker 13: I'm totally lying. Totally lying.
- 51:16Speaker 10: No, you didn't.
- 51:16Speaker 13: But I will tell you this story.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Have you ever.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Stepped on a nail?
- 51:20Speaker 11: No. I have.
- 51:21Speaker 1: I stepped on a roofing nail one time and went
- 51:22Speaker 1: through my foot. wearing some, like, Vans, like, slip-on. It
- 51:26Speaker 1: went right through my foot.
- 51:27Speaker 13: Let me tell you this story, though. This is a
- 51:28Speaker 13: great story. I've never told this story before from your next.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Okay, let's hear it.
- 51:32Speaker 13: The scene where I step on the nail, and then I, because,
- 51:35Speaker 13: you know, she puts down two strips of nails. One
- 51:37Speaker 13: is a decoy, and then one is the one I
- 51:39Speaker 13: actually step on. Well, you know, when I step on
- 51:41Speaker 13: the nail, and I'm wandering around trying to get the
- 51:43Speaker 13: nail off my foot, and the board's stuck to me, well,
- 51:46Speaker 13: the other board with nails was behind me, and I
- 51:50Speaker 13: had to fall down. And at the last minute, they said,
- 51:53Speaker 13: would this probably be a good idea to change it
- 51:55Speaker 13: out with the ones that had foam nails? And the
- 51:58Speaker 13: first take after they changed it out, I fell directly
- 52:01Speaker 13: on the foam nails. I would have had three nails
- 52:04Speaker 13: up my ass if they had not done that.
- 52:08Speaker 11: That's a hell of a blooper there. That's not even
- 52:11Speaker 11: fun for the DVD.
- 52:13Speaker 13: But they were foam nails. But that was very close.
- 52:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 52:17Speaker 13: That could have been.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Yeah, man, you would have been Vlad the.
- 52:20Speaker 13: Impaler, you know? Yeah, tetanus of the sphincter.
- 52:24Speaker 14: No, when I stepped on that nail one time in
- 52:26Speaker 14: real life, I mean, the first thing I had to
- 52:28Speaker 14: do was, like, pull it out myself, then go to
- 52:30Speaker 14: the doctor and be like, look what I did.
- 52:32Speaker 1: They're like, here's a tetanus shot.
- 52:34Speaker 11: This isn't very Michael Myers at all.
- 52:36Speaker 1: No, it's not. That's just real life. That's just real
- 52:39Speaker 1: life Alabama life. Roofing nails everywhere in Alabama.
- 52:42Speaker 13: Watch out.
- 52:43Speaker 1: I can.
- 52:45Speaker 11: But I guess, again, as you're going into it that
- 52:47Speaker 11: first time, did it feel different than other movies? Could
- 52:51Speaker 11: you tell at that point?
- 52:52Speaker 14: It was the biggest thing that I had done, and
- 52:56Speaker 14: I guess you had done, right?
- 52:57Speaker 1: The biggest thing Adam had done, too?
- 52:59Speaker 13: The biggest thing I'd done with Adam.
- 53:00Speaker 14: Yeah, and that was the biggest thing I'd done in general,
- 53:04Speaker 14: the biggest thing I'd done with Adam. And then they're
- 53:07Speaker 14: bringing in all these actors that we've worked with.
- 53:10Speaker 1: We had all worked with each other. We knew each other.
- 53:13Speaker 1: By the same time, I still was like, I'm not
- 53:15Speaker 1: as good as him. I'm not as good as her.
- 53:17Speaker 13: The only one we didn't know was Sharni.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Right, Sharni.
- 53:21Speaker 13: Well, actually, Sharni, Rob, and Barbara Crampton.
- 53:24Speaker 8: Right.
- 53:25Speaker 13: We had not worked with before. But all the rest
- 53:27Speaker 13: of them, either Elaine had worked with, or I had
- 53:30Speaker 13: worked with, or we had both worked with them.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but I was nervous. I was. I mean, I'm
- 53:37Speaker 1: not going to lie. I was just, can I do this, man,
- 53:42Speaker 1: you know?
- 53:43Speaker 13: They were all so cool, though. I mean, you can't
- 53:45Speaker 13: get anybody nicer than Charney Vinson or Barbara Crampton. Or Rob.
- 53:50Speaker 13: Rob is the coolest guy.
- 53:52Speaker 14: Elsie and I roomed together while we were there, and
- 53:56Speaker 14: he came to our door one morning. It was way
- 53:58Speaker 14: too early for us, but he was like, you guys
- 54:00Speaker 14: want to go to brunch? And we're just like, all right, no.
- 54:04Speaker 13: The most fun I had, though, was going out drinking
- 54:06Speaker 13: with Rob Moran and Nick Tucci.
- 54:08Speaker 1: See, I didn't go anywhere with anybody like that.
- 54:11Speaker 13: Oh, man. I just drank in the room. We went
- 54:12Speaker 13: to the brothel. Right. That's in Columbia.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:18Speaker 13: And what it is, we didn't realize it at the time,
- 54:20Speaker 13: but it's a bar where you can pick a girl
- 54:23Speaker 13: and go into the other part and then do whatever
- 54:26Speaker 13: you want to do.
- 54:27Speaker 7: Right.
- 54:28Speaker 13: And I was like, really?
- 54:29Speaker 1: What was the name of that place?
- 54:31Speaker 13: What the hell kind of bar is this?
- 54:32Speaker 10: Wait.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I don't know if I should or can't.
- 54:34Speaker 13: Say the name. We shouldn't say the name of it.
- 54:36Speaker 13: To be honest with you, I don't even remember. Yes,
- 54:45Speaker 13: that's what the name of it was. It sure as
- 54:47Speaker 13: hell was.
- 54:48Speaker 3: I had forgotten that.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 54:50Speaker 13: Never mind.
- 54:52Speaker 1: We have the name, though.
- 54:53Speaker 13: Let me just say that me and Nick and Rob
- 54:56Speaker 13: were very good boys. And I think everyone else on
- 54:59Speaker 13: the film was, but I can't vouch for them. But
- 55:01Speaker 13: I can vouch for Rob, Nick, and myself. I'm a dork.
- 55:04Speaker 11: I would have been the one going, can we read
- 55:06Speaker 11: comic books together?
- 55:08Speaker 14: I stayed in the room pretty much isolated.
- 55:10Speaker 1: I hung out with Sharni and Wendy Glenn a lot.
- 55:14Speaker 11: With Amy being ridiculous? Because Amy Simons was on the show,
- 55:17Speaker 11: and she's hilarious. And I don't even know if she
- 55:19Speaker 11: realizes how funny she is.
- 55:21Speaker 14: I haven't spoke to Amy in a long time, but
- 55:26Speaker 14: while we were shooting.
- 55:28Speaker 1: You're.
- 55:28Speaker 14: Next, like on AMC, they started broadcasting The Killing.
- 55:33Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 55:34Speaker 14: Okay, so we started watching The Killing. It was pretty good. Well,
- 55:37Speaker 14: I hate the fact that now it's like canceled. Netflix
- 55:40Speaker 14: had to save it because it's a great show. But
- 55:41Speaker 14: she was on this last season, and I thought she
- 55:45Speaker 14: did a great job. And her film, that new one,
- 55:48Speaker 14: she was done in Florida, and it's got a Florida base.
- 55:51Speaker 1: It says something about sunshine. I apologize, Amy, that I
- 55:54Speaker 1: don't know the name.
- 55:55Speaker 11: Sunshine.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Sun Don't Shine.
- 55:56Speaker 13: She's in one of Woody Allen's new movies, too.
- 55:58Speaker 4: Is she?
- 55:59Speaker 13: She was in one of the more recent. It's already
- 56:00Speaker 13: come out. I don't know.
- 56:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:02Speaker 1: I mean, but she's really talented. Yeah, yeah. But I
- 56:05Speaker 1: haven't spoke to her in a while. But, yeah, she's
- 56:08Speaker 1: a cool chick, yeah.
- 56:09Speaker 7: She's funny.
- 56:11Speaker 13: Yeah, she's cool.
- 56:12Speaker 14: She likes to kick them back, too, though. You know,
- 56:15Speaker 14: she's cool. Like, her, Sharni, I mean, they're all cool.
- 56:19Speaker 13: Yeah she only worked a few days on yeah yeah
- 56:22Speaker 13: she pretty much had the dinner scene and then.
- 56:24Speaker 14: Got yeah then she had her neck got a wire
- 56:28Speaker 14: neck yeah.
- 56:29Speaker 13: Spoiler spoiler i hope you've all seen.
- 56:33Speaker 1: The movie if you're listening to this then hopefully you've
- 56:36Speaker 1: seen it.
- 56:36Speaker 11: You're doing it wrong you're supposed to watch the movie first.
- 56:39Speaker 13: Right then you listen to the interview right.
- 56:42Speaker 11: Well i was gonna see like that because that That
- 56:45Speaker 11: movie in particular kind of falls into play with a
- 56:47Speaker 11: lot of them lately. I wanted to see what your
- 56:48Speaker 11: take was on just horror now. It seems like we've
- 56:52Speaker 11: entered into this new phase and it's like You're Next
- 56:55Speaker 11: and Kevin in the Woods and Tucker and Dale vs.
- 57:00Speaker 9: Evil.
- 57:01Speaker 1: I love both of those films.
- 57:02Speaker 11: All of them fall into a very specific category. Especially
- 57:05Speaker 11: Kevin in the Woods is very obvious about it. But
- 57:06Speaker 11: even the other two are ones that seem like they're
- 57:09Speaker 11: made for fans of horror that understand horror, and it's like,
- 57:14Speaker 11: it's not just a casual horror movie. It can be,
- 57:17Speaker 11: but if you want to go into it further.
- 57:18Speaker 13: It's not, like, you can't... It's horror movies for horror fans.
- 57:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's not dismissing how intelligent people are. You know, like,
- 57:28Speaker 1: we're allowing them to, like.
- 57:31Speaker 14: not just be in on the jokes or in on,
- 57:33Speaker 14: you know, whatever, but it's like, yeah, they're smart enough
- 57:36Speaker 14: to get this. And if they don't get it, then
- 57:38Speaker 14: they don't get it.
- 57:39Speaker 13: I think Cabin in the Woods was a great example
- 57:41Speaker 13: of that.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 13: That was incredibly funny. But if you're a horror fan
- 57:45Speaker 13: watching that movie.
- 57:46Speaker 1: You may hate it.
- 57:47Speaker 14: I mean, you know, it's like, well, we were discussing
- 57:50Speaker 14: this because we're diehard horror fans. Horror fans are the
- 57:53Speaker 14: most diehard fans.
- 57:55Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
- 57:55Speaker 1: On the planet.
- 57:56Speaker 13: And if you don't believe it, come to Horror Hound.
- 57:58Speaker 10: Exactly.
- 57:58Speaker 13: Or Monster Mania or anywhere else.
- 58:00Speaker 14: But, At the same time, they beg for something new.
- 58:05Speaker 14: And when you give them something new, they say, that
- 58:07Speaker 14: shit's not like that. And then when they bitch about
- 58:10Speaker 14: a remake or a reboot, give me something new. And
- 58:13Speaker 14: then you give them something new, well, it's not like that.
- 58:15Speaker 1: And they're the hardest to please, but they would literally
- 58:18Speaker 1: probably die for you. I mean, that's how just true
- 58:23Speaker 1: and blue they are.
- 58:24Speaker 13: And I totally agree to some extent with what they mean.
- 58:28Speaker 13: But with the horror, the remakes... Sweet Jesus, never mention
- 58:33Speaker 13: a remake to Doug Bradley.
- 58:34Speaker 1: That's what I hear. That's what LC warned me about.
- 58:36Speaker 11: He's not answering me. He got cut out of his
- 58:40Speaker 11: own series.
- 58:41Speaker 9: I can't blame him.
- 58:42Speaker 14: I can't believe that because when I heard that he
- 58:44Speaker 14: was actually going to do it, I was like, that's
- 58:45Speaker 14: great that they're doing a reboot with the original guy.
- 58:49Speaker 13: He's Pinhead. I mean, come on.
- 58:50Speaker 11: Why would you put anyone else in that make?
- 58:52Speaker 13: It's almost like Chucky with Brad Dourif. How could you
- 58:57Speaker 13: even imagine someone else doing that voice?
- 58:59Speaker 1: Why?
- 58:59Speaker 6: Why?
- 58:59Speaker 13: Now, maybe that's me just glorifying the past, but I
- 59:02Speaker 13: don't think so. I mean, let's face it. There are
- 59:05Speaker 13: certain things that are said. And, you know, you could
- 59:07Speaker 13: even make the argument about Robert Englund. You could make
- 59:10Speaker 13: the argument very well.
- 59:11Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:12Speaker 1: No, I agree.
- 59:12Speaker 13: Even though I love Jackie Earle.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he's great.
- 59:15Speaker 11: He's great in a lot of stuff, but even that one,
- 59:17Speaker 11: he did something different with it. And I don't know.
- 59:19Speaker 11: I think it took away from... What charm Freddy Krueger had.
- 59:23Speaker 13: And the story wasn't all that hot either, I don't think.
- 59:26Speaker 13: I think if you could do it... If you're going
- 59:29Speaker 13: to do a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, the...
- 59:32Speaker 13: Come up with something good. For God's sakes, don't ever
- 59:36Speaker 13: again use the cliche of trying to bring him out
- 59:40Speaker 13: of the dream at the end to kill him. It
- 59:42Speaker 13: doesn't work.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Stop.
- 59:43Speaker 11: Well, I like that on every one of them it
- 59:45Speaker 11: kind of works until.
- 59:47Speaker 13: The little stinger at the end.
- 59:49Speaker 9: Right.
- 59:49Speaker 13: It's coming back. But they've done it in like four
- 59:52Speaker 13: movies at this point.
- 59:53Speaker 1: When a guy can cross through planes of existence.
- 59:56Speaker 13: Yeah. I mean, at least do like he did in
- 59:59Speaker 13: number three where you just sort of poof him out
- 1:00:01Speaker 13: of existence with some holy water and shit, you know?
- 1:00:03Speaker 13: I mean, at least that's different because you know he's
- 1:00:06Speaker 13: coming back.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 1:00:08Speaker 13: I mean, how do you kill a dream anyway?
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: But yeah, I felt like that.
- 1:00:12Speaker 13: I don't know.
- 1:00:12Speaker 11: There was something to the Robert Englund version that as
- 1:00:16Speaker 11: good as Jackie Earl Haley is, it's like he just.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: And I wasn't a big fan of the makeup.
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: No, it's not.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Well, again, it's not.
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: fun like that was such a fun series it probably
- 1:00:27Speaker 11: shouldn't be he's a child killer but it was very
- 1:00:29Speaker 11: dark it was much darker.
- 1:00:30Speaker 14: And i enjoyed that more realism and the darker things
- 1:00:33Speaker 14: they brought to it but like have that still mix
- 1:00:36Speaker 14: with like the freddy we know or and love already
- 1:00:40Speaker 14: but make him a little more dark and intense like
- 1:00:43Speaker 14: a good mesh you know you need to find a
- 1:00:44Speaker 14: good fence to sit.
- 1:00:45Speaker 13: On you know and rooney i mean rooney mara did
- 1:00:48Speaker 13: pretty well for herself afterwards yeah That's for sure. I
- 1:00:51Speaker 13: don't think we'll ever see her in another Nightmare on
- 1:00:53Speaker 13: Elm Street movie.
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: But, I mean, it's funny that we got to that
- 1:00:57Speaker 11: one because that's a good question I want to ask
- 1:00:59Speaker 11: if you guys feel. I feel like that one is
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: a very weird, especially for a reboot, because they're trying
- 1:01:04Speaker 11: to pull in these new kids, and, like, new kids
- 1:01:05Speaker 11: today aren't really even, like, they don't get, they're so
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: unfazed by that stuff. In the 80s, you were just like,
- 1:01:11Speaker 11: kids were shocked by most of that. But now they're so,
- 1:01:13Speaker 11: I mean, they've seen so much horrible stuff on the Internet,
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: they're numb to it.
- 1:01:16Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: But I feel like there's this weird game that they
- 1:01:19Speaker 11: play in that Nightmare on Elm Street reboot where they, like, okay,
- 1:01:22Speaker 11: we don't mind showing you all this blood, but if
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: you'll notice, like, all of the kids, like, there's not
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: any weird sex scenes.
- 1:01:28Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:01:28Speaker 10: Like, I noticed there were.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Like, it was very natural in that first one.
- 1:01:31Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: But they don't have it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: They didn't take it to that level.
- 1:01:35Speaker 13: They're not even human. They're talking on iPhones and iPods,
- 1:01:41Speaker 13: and that's what supposedly updates it. Now they have Facebook pages.
- 1:01:44Speaker 13: Nancy has a Facebook.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Nancy has a Facebook.
- 1:01:49Speaker 13: Nancy, whose name is not Thompson, has a Facebook.
- 1:01:52Speaker 14: Another problem I have, and we almost did this in
- 1:01:54Speaker 14: Popsicle with a lot of horror films, is that everybody's
- 1:01:58Speaker 14: got to go to the library.
- 1:02:00Speaker 13: Yeah, that's where you solve the mystery.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Or someplace.
- 1:02:05Speaker 13: They find the archive.
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: Oh, my God.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: I'm living on an Indian burial ground. No wonder my
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: shit's haunted.
- 1:02:12Speaker 13: Look at this enormous headline. Fred Krueger burned to death
- 1:02:15Speaker 13: by parents. That's the problem with movies today. Oh, my Lord.
- 1:02:18Speaker 11: Not enough microfiche.
- 1:02:19Speaker 13: And then they get on their iPod, and it's like, hey.
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:02:23Speaker 13: Let's break it down.
- 1:02:25Speaker 11: It just felt like that was something that was really
- 1:02:26Speaker 11: me and it wasn't just the oh we wanted sex
- 1:02:28Speaker 11: scenes in it but it's like as i watched it
- 1:02:30Speaker 11: the more i thought about it was like there's like
- 1:02:31Speaker 11: even interpersonal relations like you don't they're supposed to be
- 1:02:34Speaker 11: boyfriend and girlfriend and they're just there's no physicality to
- 1:02:38Speaker 11: them like it seems and again for very good actors
- 1:02:40Speaker 11: like you know remark's really good but like it's weird
- 1:02:44Speaker 11: that it's almost like they capped it like i don't
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: know if it was a weird directorial choice that like Well,
- 1:02:48Speaker 11: we don't want to take it down that road. So
- 1:02:50Speaker 11: it's like they're very cold to each other, which is
- 1:02:53Speaker 11: really weird to me.
- 1:02:54Speaker 13: I guess it's trying to reflect that kids now are
- 1:02:57Speaker 13: supposed to all be disaffected. And disjointed from society, which
- 1:03:01Speaker 13: they kind of are. They're all just sort of loners.
- 1:03:04Speaker 13: But you lose the charm of in the first one
- 1:03:07Speaker 13: where they all seem like they're friends and they have
- 1:03:09Speaker 13: this relationship and go, oh, I had friends like that.
- 1:03:13Speaker 13: Nowadays they're just all insensitive and disaffected and their friend
- 1:03:17Speaker 13: dies and they're like, Oh.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:03:19Speaker 13: Well.
- 1:03:19Speaker 11: That really bothered me about that one. And I think
- 1:03:22Speaker 11: that's what, and maybe that was part of it, is
- 1:03:24Speaker 11: that maybe it is a societal shift.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Like, our whole.
- 1:03:28Speaker 11: Culture has changed so much in that 30 span of
- 1:03:30Speaker 11: years or so.
- 1:03:31Speaker 13: Right. Yeah, it's too, they did lose some fun.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:03:35Speaker 14: But I think people also need to look at, like, Chucky, Freddy, Jason, Michael, as, like,
- 1:03:41Speaker 14: the new Universal monsters and, like, the new Hammer films
- 1:03:45Speaker 14: or whatever you want to say.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: We'll say Universal.
- 1:03:47Speaker 14: Because there's like 100 fucking Dracula films, right? Okay, you know, Dracula, what,
- 1:03:52Speaker 14: meets Laurel and Hardy, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Well, guess what?
- 1:03:55Speaker 14: They are the new versions of that, and there will
- 1:03:57Speaker 14: be before, not in my time, but somebody's time, there's
- 1:04:02Speaker 14: going to be 100 Friday the 13th.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Just get used to it.
- 1:04:05Speaker 13: There'll be a million Jasons, just don't tell Cain.
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: You're right.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: No, I'll tell him.
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: But.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: That's just the way it's.
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: Going to be.
- 1:04:12Speaker 13: I love you, Cain. You know I love you.
- 1:04:13Speaker 14: But hopefully some new stuff like You're Next and some
- 1:04:18Speaker 14: films will like, you know, maybe we'll set a certain
- 1:04:22Speaker 14: path or pattern for ourselves and other people to follow.
- 1:04:25Speaker 11: Is that then part of the new wave? I mean,
- 1:04:29Speaker 11: we kind of said that, but that's what I'm wondering
- 1:04:31Speaker 11: is that we have these new very self-conscious, somewhat more
- 1:04:35Speaker 11: intelligent horror movies.
- 1:04:36Speaker 13: Is it because.
- 1:04:37Speaker 11: the audiences got smarter or is it because they were
- 1:04:40Speaker 11: asking for something of that caliber?
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I think it was, it's just where.
- 1:04:45Speaker 13: I'm not sure if they've gotten smarter. No, I don't
- 1:04:48Speaker 13: think it is.
- 1:04:49Speaker 14: I think the film, if the filmmakers and the, the
- 1:04:53Speaker 14: fans are now making like everything's oversaturated. Like, I mean,
- 1:04:56Speaker 14: let's be honest. There's some, we're doing an interview with you,
- 1:04:59Speaker 14: but there's a million podcasts.
- 1:05:01Speaker 13: You know what I mean? But let's also remember that,
- 1:05:03Speaker 13: that one film did it well and was very successful.
- 1:05:07Speaker 13: So after that, it became a trend. You know, you
- 1:05:11Speaker 13: say like, let's say what, like Scream was the first
- 1:05:13Speaker 13: one that was like, everyone was smart.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Like a postmodern kind of deal.
- 1:05:17Speaker 13: And that was so, they were all so successful, well,
- 1:05:21Speaker 13: for the most part.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I love the Scream franchise.
- 1:05:23Speaker 13: I mean, I love the first two.
- 1:05:25Speaker 11: I don't even hate the third.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: I hate the wrap up. I don't even hate the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: third or fourth.
- 1:05:30Speaker 13: It has some good stuff, but I miss Williams.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: It's not as good as the first season.
- 1:05:33Speaker 13: I miss Williamson.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: He doesn't have the right.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: I like the fourth one.
- 1:05:36Speaker 13: I do.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: I like the newest one a lot.
- 1:05:38Speaker 13: We saw that when we were making your Knicks.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: We saw that.
- 1:05:42Speaker 11: I felt like they took the easy way out. Like,
- 1:05:44Speaker 11: they just wrapped it up like all the other ones. Like,
- 1:05:47Speaker 11: I so wanted them to do something different.
- 1:05:49Speaker 13: You know what they need to do with the Scream films?
- 1:05:51Speaker 13: They need to stop being so damn protective.
- 1:05:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:05:54Speaker 13: If you kill off one of those three central characters,
- 1:05:56Speaker 13: you would go, oh, my God.
- 1:05:59Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:05:59Speaker 13: Remember when they were brave enough to kill Randy in
- 1:06:01Speaker 13: part two?
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:06:02Speaker 13: That's what they need to do again.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Just grab his ass up in the van.
- 1:06:05Speaker 13: You're like, not Randy.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Everybody was like, oh, my God.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: But Randy got it.
- 1:06:09Speaker 13: And there was a scene in four where they're at
- 1:06:11Speaker 13: that party in that barn and Gale is about to
- 1:06:14Speaker 13: bite it.
- 1:06:14Speaker 11: That's when she should have gone.
- 1:06:16Speaker 13: That's when she should have gone. It would have given
- 1:06:18Speaker 13: her a good death, but she gets the 15th superficial wound,
- 1:06:23Speaker 13: and the poor woman's been shot, stabbed, fallen.
- 1:06:27Speaker 11: I mean, it works for Dewey. That's kind of his thing.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: It's kind of funny that he continues.
- 1:06:31Speaker 9: He gets beat up and keeps coming.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: He limps over with his theme in the background.
- 1:06:35Speaker 13: He had good physical therapy.
- 1:06:37Speaker 11: Oversaturation therapy.
- 1:06:39Speaker 14: Because equipment is easier to buy, hardware, software. So fans
- 1:06:45Speaker 14: can actually think, well, this idea I have, I can
- 1:06:48Speaker 14: learn this craft and go out here with my buddies
- 1:06:50Speaker 14: and make it kind of like.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: We did and do. Still, only we're getting to bigger points.
- 1:06:56Speaker 14: But it's hard to, at the same time, when everybody
- 1:07:00Speaker 14: can have that same hardware and software... For reasonable prices,
- 1:07:03Speaker 14: you're going to get a lot of garbage you've got
- 1:07:05Speaker 14: to swim through.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: So it's a good thing and a bad.
- 1:07:07Speaker 14: Thing, you know, that everything is so accessible. But I
- 1:07:11Speaker 14: think the reason some better things are being made is
- 1:07:14Speaker 14: because people, the people that make them are just like,
- 1:07:19Speaker 14: this is what I want to see. I'm going to
- 1:07:21Speaker 14: make what I want to see because I think that
- 1:07:24Speaker 14: there are other people that want to see this.
- 1:07:26Speaker 13: Well, and that's what any good filmmaker should do, or
- 1:07:28Speaker 13: writer for that matter. I mean, you know, if you
- 1:07:30Speaker 13: look at something like Hellraiser... Clive Barker just made what
- 1:07:33Speaker 13: he wanted to make.
- 1:07:34Speaker 11: It's so unconventional as a horror movie. Or any film, right?
- 1:07:38Speaker 13: I mean, people who grew up with it may not
- 1:07:40Speaker 13: realize just how fucking original that movie is. It's unbelievable.
- 1:07:46Speaker 13: And if more movies came out with that sort of
- 1:07:49Speaker 13: quality now, but then if you also think about it,
- 1:07:52Speaker 13: the year that was made, what, 87? How many horrible,
- 1:07:55Speaker 13: formula-matic films came out, and then you had the one Hellraiser?
- 1:07:59Speaker 13: So we are still getting, like, every so often you'll
- 1:08:01Speaker 13: get the, The one. And you'll go, oh, what's that?
- 1:08:05Speaker 13: And that's what you live for as a horror fan.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Or even just a film fan.
- 1:08:10Speaker 14: Even if we're talking outside of horror, that just one
- 1:08:13Speaker 14: or two good movies. Just because this wins this Emmy
- 1:08:18Speaker 14: or this Oscar doesn't make me any more interested in it.
- 1:08:21Speaker 14: Just that one film you see and while you're going
- 1:08:23Speaker 14: through your Netflix InstaQ and you're like, I'll give that
- 1:08:26Speaker 14: a try.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: And you're just like, man, that was fucking good.
- 1:08:29Speaker 11: I think it kind of goes back to what you
- 1:08:30Speaker 11: were saying earlier about, like, the Easy Rider days. Like,
- 1:08:34Speaker 11: I think it's going back to that. It's almost filmmakers
- 1:08:36Speaker 11: doing it in that same style, not worrying about a studio,
- 1:08:39Speaker 11: not worrying about funding.
- 1:08:41Speaker 14: It's like, buy it if you want it, don't if
- 1:08:43Speaker 14: you don't, but, you know, get with us or don't.
- 1:08:46Speaker 11: It was that auteur theory that kind of came about
- 1:08:48Speaker 11: in the 70s. It started those late 60s and late
- 1:08:50Speaker 11: 70s with nothing but, you know, artists doing what they
- 1:08:53Speaker 11: wanted to do, and making a film. And the 80s
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: kind of killed that.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:58Speaker 11: It brought some great things, too.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: It did.
- 1:09:00Speaker 13: And the 70s, they were great for horror films, too,
- 1:09:03Speaker 13: because that's when that new wave came about. Texas Chainsaw.
- 1:09:06Speaker 13: All the really great ones came out then.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Halloween, Texas Chainsaw.
- 1:09:09Speaker 13: And then you had some coming, you know, some late
- 1:09:12Speaker 13: bloomers in the 80s.
- 1:09:13Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:09:14Speaker 13: And then it sort of died off and then you
- 1:09:16Speaker 13: got to the mid-90s.
- 1:09:16Speaker 14: Well, you notice when, like, Friday the 13th came out, like,
- 1:09:20Speaker 14: it kind of fucked up things for, like, Halloween in
- 1:09:26Speaker 14: a way because Halloween was kind of this classy kind
- 1:09:28Speaker 14: of thing in a way, really.
- 1:09:30Speaker 11: Well, and it wasn't even going to be that.
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: Like, you didn't want to keep.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Doing that over and over. Right, but then it became...
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Friday the 13th messed it up. Yeah, it did. It messed.
- 1:09:38Speaker 14: And then everything now is like, well, Friday the 13th
- 1:09:41Speaker 14: just showed four pairs of tits. We got to show
- 1:09:45Speaker 14: at least one. And this guy got slammed down this way. Well,
- 1:09:49Speaker 14: now we got to up it.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Like, you're right. We got to up the ante. And
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:09:52Speaker 13: Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: No, I don't either.
- 1:09:55Speaker 14: But I love Friday the 13th. But I think people
- 1:09:58Speaker 14: with the formulaic things, they looked at.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: That and they said, well, Michael's a killer. He's a killer.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Let's make him more like him. You know what I mean?
- 1:10:08Speaker 14: And both of those killers have changed so much in
- 1:10:10Speaker 14: every film because, like, You know, like each time it's like, well,
- 1:10:15Speaker 14: Michael seems.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Like he's an android in this one. Like for real,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: he walks and looks like an android.
- 1:10:20Speaker 11: They just get more and more supernatural.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Right, and the next one he's like more, you know,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: he's bigger, he's smaller, you know, whatever. And then with Jason,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the same way, you're like, is he a zombie? Is
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: he a ghost? I don't know what the hell he is.
- 1:10:33Speaker 13: Eventually he became a zombie.
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:10:36Speaker 13: By about seven, all his flesh was falling off.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: About seven, eight, yeah, like, you know.
- 1:10:40Speaker 11: Oh yeah six he comes out of the grave doesn't
- 1:10:43Speaker 11: he lightning or whatever it was seven is hilarious with
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: the psychic that is so.
- 1:10:48Speaker 13: Funny that was filmed in alabama too yeah i was
- 1:10:52Speaker 13: yes it was.
- 1:10:53Speaker 11: But yeah i think i mean part of it is
- 1:10:55Speaker 11: that i think you just had artists doing what they
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: wanted in the 70s right and that it was that
- 1:11:00Speaker 11: kind of that success of horrors in the 80s but
- 1:11:02Speaker 11: also that's when that that studio mentality came into play.
- 1:11:05Speaker 13: It's like that.
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: We've got to have one every year.
- 1:11:07Speaker 13: Post-Jaws, Star Wars.
- 1:11:09Speaker 11: You get that, well, we need a blockbuster, we need
- 1:11:10Speaker 11: to make money, and then it became about finding that formula,
- 1:11:13Speaker 11: and I think the Friday the 13th thing came along,
- 1:11:15Speaker 11: and like, that's the formula. You just need body after body,
- 1:11:19Speaker 11: and then each sequel, up the body count, up the nudity.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: Up the.
- 1:11:22Speaker 11: So, yeah, it's.
- 1:11:23Speaker 13: All of that. It gave Siskel and Ebert something to
- 1:11:25Speaker 13: bitch about for about 10 years.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Well, you know, and I mean.
- 1:11:29Speaker 13: Those guys... hated horror it was amazing and you watch
- 1:11:35Speaker 13: it too if you watch any of their stuff it's
- 1:11:37Speaker 13: like you just want to go wow you just really
- 1:11:40Speaker 13: don't get it do you you don't get the idea
- 1:11:42Speaker 13: that sometimes films can just be fun i mean like.
- 1:11:44Speaker 14: And i try to think about it like there's not
- 1:11:47Speaker 14: a horror film that's like won an academy award is
- 1:11:50Speaker 14: there like.
- 1:11:51Speaker 13: Really no well the exorcist that was the closest yeah
- 1:11:55Speaker 13: That's like... But I mean, hey, that.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: That's a good point.
- 1:12:00Speaker 13: But it's close.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: But, you know, you'll never see.
- 1:12:03Speaker 13: That's about as close as you get.
- 1:12:05Speaker 14: You'll never see, like, the new Halloween was so good
- 1:12:09Speaker 14: that it is now up for an academy.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: Even if it was that good, let's say it was
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: just that good of a film and a horror film
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: that it deserved to be nominated. They wouldn't nominate it
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: just because it was called Halloween and part of the franchise.
- 1:12:24Speaker 11: It's Yeah, I mean, it is a weird bias with horror.
- 1:12:26Speaker 14: Because some people look at horror as like pornography almost.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: They do.
- 1:12:32Speaker 11: To a lot of people, yeah.
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:12:33Speaker 13: Well, and people are really stiff.
- 1:12:36Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:12:36Speaker 13: People who don't get horror are the people who are
- 1:12:38Speaker 13: really stiff.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:12:39Speaker 11: Well, and they don't think horror can be anything else.
- 1:12:42Speaker 11: And it's like, if you talk to people who really
- 1:12:43Speaker 11: understand horror, you realize how much is going on under
- 1:12:46Speaker 11: the surface. Like, even if it looks like something very simple,
- 1:12:49Speaker 11: it's like there's all these layers of commentary and commentating
- 1:12:53Speaker 11: on what's going on in the culture at the time.
- 1:12:55Speaker 13: Well, it's like, that's George Romero's whole thing.
- 1:12:57Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:12:58Speaker 13: I mean, in some of the later stuff, you could go, eh.
- 1:13:00Speaker 13: But a lot of his stuff is really, really, really good.
- 1:13:04Speaker 11: Especially when he got very conscious of that. In the beginning,
- 1:13:07Speaker 11: I think, even that first one, I think they talk
- 1:13:09Speaker 11: about how much he probably retroactively put all.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: This meaning on Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:13:13Speaker 8: Yes, exactly.
- 1:13:13Speaker 13: I totally agree.
- 1:13:14Speaker 11: But by dawn, he really was.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: It was very conscious.
- 1:13:16Speaker 11: He's making a statement.
- 1:13:18Speaker 13: There is so much in Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:13:19Speaker 13: I can sit there and just... I love it. And
- 1:13:22Speaker 13: some things are, you know, they're sort of.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: There's something raw about it.
- 1:13:26Speaker 13: Unintentionally funny, where he's like, they flew into the air
- 1:13:28Speaker 13: like bugs. I love that thing. Me and my buddy
- 1:13:33Speaker 13: back home, we always walk around going, they flew into
- 1:13:35Speaker 13: the air like bugs. This ain't no Sunday school picnic.
- 1:13:42Speaker 11: I love that.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: There's something that holds up so well.
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: About that movie.
- 1:13:46Speaker 13: It's such a great movie. I mean, I could watch
- 1:13:48Speaker 13: that movie a million times.
- 1:13:49Speaker 11: I love Martin, and I feel like nobody gives Martin
- 1:13:51Speaker 11: enough credit.
- 1:13:52Speaker 9: Martin sucks.
- 1:13:54Speaker 11: And then I, cause I talked to, I remember talking
- 1:13:56Speaker 11: to him, like the actor and I'm like, you do
- 1:13:59Speaker 11: realize Dexter stole half your stuff, right?
- 1:14:01Speaker 13: I'm like, it's just kind of Dexter.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:03Speaker 13: He is awesome.
- 1:14:04Speaker 11: I told him, I was like, I was like, have
- 1:14:05Speaker 11: you watched Dexter? Cause it's like, he's doing kind of
- 1:14:09Speaker 11: the same thing.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: Like he stalks around their house.
- 1:14:10Speaker 11: He finds his next victim.
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:14:12Speaker 11: He uses the hypodermic.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Needle to take them down. I'm like, it's pretty close.
- 1:14:18Speaker 11: I mean, to, I mean, he's just not, I mean,
- 1:14:19Speaker 11: he is kind of a serial killer really.
- 1:14:21Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:14:22Speaker 11: He's just not taking out the other serial killers.
- 1:14:26Speaker 14: I believe that Dexter was one of those shows that
- 1:14:28Speaker 14: I would have loved to have seen a whole season
- 1:14:30Speaker 14: by season three or four that he had gotten caught.
- 1:14:34Speaker 14: And you have a whole season where his family.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: And everyone is having to deal with him in jail.
- 1:14:38Speaker 14: What I didn't like is on a lot of series,
- 1:14:40Speaker 14: which made Breaking Bad so good, is that you have
- 1:14:43Speaker 14: the same family like we were talking about earlier. Every
- 1:14:47Speaker 14: show was the same showrunners, same producers, same writers, same cinematography.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: They never changed anything.
- 1:14:52Speaker 14: With a lot of these, like even Walking Dead now
- 1:14:54Speaker 14: has changed Showrunner several times.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Dexter did the same thing.
- 1:15:00Speaker 13: They threw Frank Darabont out for trying to make it better.
- 1:15:03Speaker 10: Really?
- 1:15:04Speaker 14: And it's like, you know, and I love Dexter, you know, but,
- 1:15:09Speaker 14: I mean, it should have ended sooner than it did.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: It did.
- 1:15:14Speaker 14: And I would have liked to have seen him take a, like,
- 1:15:19Speaker 14: you know, because it started becoming it. Its own formula
- 1:15:22Speaker 14: started fucking itself up because it's like, I know he's
- 1:15:25Speaker 14: not going to get caught.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: It's just another close encounter for him. You know, well,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: you know, I.
- 1:15:32Speaker 14: Wanted to see him just get busted and just like
- 1:15:34Speaker 14: have a whole season of like Dexter in bars.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: That should have been the last season.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: But some people probably wouldn't have wanted to see him.
- 1:15:42Speaker 14: Behind bars and dealing with these emotions and things, you know,
- 1:15:45Speaker 14: but yeah, that's just me.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: That's my opinion.
- 1:15:49Speaker 11: It did those tense moments really well, especially in the mid-run.
- 1:15:52Speaker 9: It did.
- 1:15:53Speaker 11: It did seem like, how the hell is he going
- 1:15:54Speaker 11: to get out of this?
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: What's his name?
- 1:15:56Speaker 11: Oh, yeah, Lithgow.
- 1:15:58Speaker 9: Lithgow?
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Oh, man, that season with Lithgow.
- 1:16:01Speaker 13: It's the best of the run.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: That's one of the best seasons of television of any
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: show ever.
- 1:16:06Speaker 13: It is.
- 1:16:07Speaker 11: Two's good, but three or four.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: It's four, yeah. It's amazing. Yeah, with the Trinity killer.
- 1:16:14Speaker 14: That's awesome shit right there.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:18Speaker 11: Well, have you guys seen anything lately that you think
- 1:16:20Speaker 11: is cool? Either of the indie caliber.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Or mainstream stuff. I've been watching a lot of... I
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: have Netflix on demand. I don't have cable or anything else.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: So I just do my $ 8 a month and stream.
- 1:16:38Speaker 11: Whatever they send out.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Right, yeah. And you have all these choices. So I've
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: been watching a lot of wrestling things lately. Because I
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: grew up on wrestling.
- 1:16:48Speaker 14: Yeah, I grew up on wrestling, and I got out
- 1:16:50Speaker 14: of it. And I got out of wrestling, of course, right?
- 1:16:55Speaker 14: And I'm not really into what's going on with wrestling now.
- 1:16:57Speaker 14: But I'm going back and watching these documentaries about these
- 1:17:00Speaker 14: certain wrestlers, like The Rock and Mankind. Mick Foley is
- 1:17:04Speaker 14: one of my favorite people on the planet. I mean,
- 1:17:07Speaker 14: the things he did to himself to entertain a crowd.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: He was taking.
- 1:17:13Speaker 14: Crazy bumps. I mean, and then that Undertaker hell in
- 1:17:15Speaker 14: the cell in like 96 when he fell off the thing.
- 1:17:18Speaker 14: I mean, he literally went off like a 15-foot cage,
- 1:17:22Speaker 14: if people don't know, a wrestler. 15-foot cage, dropped through
- 1:17:27Speaker 14: a real table onto concrete, and then got up and
- 1:17:33Speaker 14: fell back through 15. He crawled back up the hell
- 1:17:37Speaker 14: in the cell and then fell back through the top.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: And then had a tooth in.
- 1:17:43Speaker 14: His nose and was bleeding and he couldn't even stand
- 1:17:46Speaker 14: up and he poured the tax out. And I've read
- 1:17:48Speaker 14: his book and, you know, he poured tax out on
- 1:17:51Speaker 14: the floor and the undertaker tax him like twice and
- 1:17:54Speaker 14: all these tax are in his body.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:17:57Speaker 14: And, um, the undertaker and Mick Foley's book, uh, I
- 1:18:01Speaker 14: think it's like have a nice day or something like that.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Uh, the mankind book.
- 1:18:04Speaker 14: Uh, he, um, he said that when he and the
- 1:18:08Speaker 14: undertaker got back, you know, to, be you know the
- 1:18:12Speaker 14: er basically that's there already on site and they're like
- 1:18:16Speaker 14: he's you know sitting there getting examined they both are
- 1:18:19Speaker 14: and obviously mick foley's in way worse condition and um
- 1:18:24Speaker 14: mick turns and looks to the undertaker and he says
- 1:18:27Speaker 14: man did we ever do those um tax did i
- 1:18:30Speaker 14: get the bag of tax out because i mean he's
- 1:18:32Speaker 14: had like three concussions at this point And The Undertaker said, Mick,
- 1:18:37Speaker 14: look at your arm.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: And his arm, he's just so numb. His arm is
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: covered in.
- 1:18:42Speaker 14: So I've been enjoying watching these wrestling documentaries and stuff.
- 1:18:47Speaker 11: It's all about Andre the Giant.
- 1:18:50Speaker 9: For me. Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: WrestleMania III. There you go.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:54Speaker 11: Any wrestling movies for you?
- 1:18:56Speaker 13: I don't watch wrestling.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: I really don't.
- 1:19:00Speaker 11: Princess Bride, that's as wrestling as I.
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: Anybody want a peanut?
- 1:19:04Speaker 13: Right. I think Ty West's new movie, The Sacrament, I
- 1:19:09Speaker 13: would check that out. I haven't seen it yet, but
- 1:19:12Speaker 13: me and Sharni were talking about it earlier. And she
- 1:19:14Speaker 13: says it's unbelievable. She's watched it.
- 1:19:17Speaker 11: Everything he does is, like, that's the thing. I know
- 1:19:19Speaker 11: a lot of people out there get upset with his movies.
- 1:19:22Speaker 11: But I'm like, to me, that's the sign of.
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: A good movie.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: Like, if it's middle of the road.
- 1:19:25Speaker 11: But, like, if you love it or hate it, he
- 1:19:27Speaker 11: did something right.
- 1:19:28Speaker 13: I don't know how many people have seen that movie,
- 1:19:30Speaker 13: Trigger Man, that he did. It was one of his
- 1:19:32Speaker 13: first movies.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:34Speaker 13: For what it is, the budget they had.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I like Trigger Man.
- 1:19:37Speaker 13: Great. And also I like The Innkeepers.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Oh, The Innkeepers.
- 1:19:41Speaker 13: I forgot that.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: You did that.
- 1:19:43Speaker 13: I love that. Some people talk about, oh, this is boring.
- 1:19:45Speaker 13: It's an awesome movie.
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: Well, what's the one that he did?
- 1:19:47Speaker 9: It's character-oriented.
- 1:19:48Speaker 13: Exactly.
- 1:19:48Speaker 15: It's so good.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: What's the one that he did right before The Innkeepers?
- 1:19:52Speaker 13: The House of the Devil?
- 1:19:53Speaker 11: Yeah, I love that.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: It's another one. Because it just straight up looked like
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Tom Newton. Yeah, I mean, the way the film looked,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: the way it sounded, I mean, They nailed every part
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: of that vintage vibe.
- 1:20:04Speaker 13: Bowen was in that, too.
- 1:20:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:20:06Speaker 13: AJ.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Yeah. He's always great.
- 1:20:08Speaker 11: That's another one. And I know people that really hated
- 1:20:11Speaker 11: the way it was paced. And I'm like, it's not
- 1:20:13Speaker 11: by accident.
- 1:20:13Speaker 9: No.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: He's doing this on purpose.
- 1:20:15Speaker 9: It's a cool movie.
- 1:20:15Speaker 11: It serves the purpose of the movie. But yeah, I
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: don't know. Everything he does is just so impressive. Even
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: if you don't like it, you have to inspire him
- 1:20:24Speaker 11: as a filmmaker.
- 1:20:25Speaker 13: He's trying new stuff.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:20:29Speaker 11: Well, on the new stuff, do you guys have stuff
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: coming out you need to tell people about? Stuff coming
- 1:20:34Speaker 11: in the future to look for?
- 1:20:35Speaker 13: I'm working on something, but I don't know. I'm going
- 1:20:38Speaker 13: to wait.
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: Keep it under wraps.
- 1:20:39Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm going to keep it under wraps.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Kind of the same way, yeah.
- 1:20:44Speaker 13: That was a very interesting response.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: She's giving you the window. Yeah, the window for us
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: to just pimp our product. Yeah, I'm doing that now.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: We have stuff that we're... been talked to about you
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: know for months or years now you know we have
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: stuff that we want to do.
- 1:21:01Speaker 13: And there's always stuff that comes along but then but
- 1:21:04Speaker 13: then you know what happens to it it flies through
- 1:21:06Speaker 13: the air and doesn't get funded so many things that
- 1:21:10Speaker 13: you hear about just never happen yeah you're like so
- 1:21:13Speaker 13: it's hard to talk even about it because you just
- 1:21:15Speaker 13: like like two weeks from now yeah somebody could.
- 1:21:17Speaker 14: Be like man we've got budgeting for this i mean
- 1:21:20Speaker 14: even somebody like adam you know it's like I think
- 1:21:23Speaker 14: this is going to happen in two weeks.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: We'll be like, we're filming something else.
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: Yeah. You know what it did? It flew into the
- 1:21:30Speaker 13: air like boats.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:21:32Speaker 13: That's such a great line.
- 1:21:34Speaker 11: You can't say anything because fans are so hardcore. They'll
- 1:21:37Speaker 11: just be like, when's that one movie coming out? And
- 1:21:38Speaker 11: they'll freak out and they'll be bugging you for the
- 1:21:40Speaker 11: next six or eight years. And you're like, but it
- 1:21:42Speaker 11: didn't get funded. It's not my fault.
- 1:21:44Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:21:44Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:21:47Speaker 11: Anything else you want to send people off with? Any
- 1:21:50Speaker 11: other advice for them?
- 1:21:52Speaker 13: I have one thing I'd like to tell everyone.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I think I know what it is going to be.
- 1:21:57Speaker 13: Don't. Okay, one last time. They flew into the air
- 1:22:02Speaker 13: like bugs.
- 1:22:05Speaker 11: So kids out there, don't fly into the air.
- 1:22:07Speaker 13: No. Or be a moving bonfire. I love the movie
- 1:22:13Speaker 13: so much. I'm sorry.
- 1:22:18Speaker 11: What did you think of the remake?
- 1:22:20Speaker 13: Love it. I actually love it.
- 1:22:22Speaker 11: Of the few, I don't know. It's one of those
- 1:22:24Speaker 11: you feel like you shouldn't like it.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Isn't that original Night of the Living Dead? That's like
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: public domain, right?
- 1:22:31Speaker 11: Well, they licensed it under the wrong title. Well, it
- 1:22:35Speaker 11: was Night of the Flesh Eaters.
- 1:22:37Speaker 14: Well, see, I saw a trailer the other day for
- 1:22:39Speaker 14: a film where people are watching Night of the Living
- 1:22:42Speaker 14: Dead or something, and halfway through it, everything's in color,
- 1:22:45Speaker 14: then it goes to black and white. Or everything's black
- 1:22:47Speaker 14: and white or it goes to color.
- 1:22:49Speaker 13: I think they're doing another remake or something.
- 1:22:51Speaker 14: But it's like they are watching the film and they
- 1:22:53Speaker 14: get sucked into the film.
- 1:22:55Speaker 13: Oh, God.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, something like that. There was the animated.
- 1:22:58Speaker 11: Did you ever see? I still haven't seen that.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: No.
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: Which that was kind of cool.
- 1:23:01Speaker 11: Again, for something that falls into public domain, it's cool
- 1:23:04Speaker 11: when they can do something like that. They basically gave
- 1:23:06Speaker 11: it to all these different animators and said, you pick
- 1:23:10Speaker 11: a segment. We're going to divide it up into all
- 1:23:11Speaker 11: these little segments. Do it however you want. You can
- 1:23:14Speaker 11: do it. hand drawn you can do stop motion you
- 1:23:16Speaker 11: can do whatever you want and they piece together this
- 1:23:18Speaker 11: same story obviously but like every few minutes.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: It changes switch to an entirely different style that sounds
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: cool yeah that was that was something original.
- 1:23:25Speaker 13: The worst one though was when they denied living dead
- 1:23:27Speaker 13: 30 years and they added scenes john russo who is
- 1:23:31Speaker 13: i mean i'm sorry john but you're a horrible film
- 1:23:33Speaker 13: director he added a bunch of scenes and i had
- 1:23:35Speaker 13: added a scene where it was like a cemetery scene
- 1:23:39Speaker 13: And they had this guy, and it's supposed to be
- 1:23:41Speaker 13: set in 1969 or 8 or whatever. And it's supposed
- 1:23:44Speaker 13: to play into, they added scenes to the movie. So
- 1:23:47Speaker 13: it's supposed to just naturally play in and tell where
- 1:23:49Speaker 13: the cemetery zombie came from. And so they have his
- 1:23:52Speaker 13: funeral scene. Yeah, it's like a funeral scene where the
- 1:23:55Speaker 13: film opens with them taking the casket out to the gravesite.
- 1:24:00Speaker 13: And then they have this dude who looks like Anton
- 1:24:03Speaker 13: LaVey doing the funeral. And it's like, this is 1968?
- 1:24:07Speaker 10: What?
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Wow, I haven't seen that.
- 1:24:10Speaker 13: And there's so many things in that that's awful. And
- 1:24:12Speaker 13: it's just John Russo took it and said, well, this
- 1:24:14Speaker 13: is what we're intending to do, which is basically just
- 1:24:17Speaker 13: what you say when you just want to add a
- 1:24:19Speaker 13: bunch of shit to anything.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: So it's kind of like.
- 1:24:21Speaker 13: That's George Lucas.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: See, that's what I was going to say.
- 1:24:24Speaker 13: I always meant it this way.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Is that the equivalent to that?
- 1:24:28Speaker 13: Yeah, pretty much. It was like John Russo's less successful version.
- 1:24:31Speaker 11: We just didn't have the money. But now that I
- 1:24:34Speaker 11: have all this John Russo money.
- 1:24:35Speaker 13: We were intending to do that, I promise.
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:24:39Speaker 13: No, we're about to wrap up.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: You're wrapping up.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: No problem.
- 1:24:42Speaker 13: That is cool.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: I understand.
- 1:24:45Speaker 11: March Madness has taken over, so we better get out
- 1:24:47Speaker 11: of here.
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: Thank you guys for talking with us.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Thank you, man.
- 1:24:50Speaker 15: Anything else we need to cover?
- 1:25:11Speaker 9: No, I think I need a drink and sit down
- 1:25:13Speaker 9: for a little bit.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: I think everybody's at that point this weekend. We're all
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: plenty worn out.
- 1:25:19Speaker 13: Yes, I agree.
- 1:25:21Speaker 12: I've done nothing else.
- 1:25:26Speaker 13: That's it.
- 1:25:26Speaker 11: That's the other thing. I've realized I've been talking all weekend.
- 1:25:29Speaker 11: I'm surprised I still have a voice. It's like I
- 1:25:31Speaker 11: sit by myself the whole rest of the week and
- 1:25:32Speaker 11: don't talk to anybody. So it's probably not used to this.
- 1:25:35Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: Me too.
- 1:25:37Speaker 9: I just really appreciate you having me on. This is
- 1:25:38Speaker 9: really cool.
- 1:25:39Speaker 11: No problem.
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: Do you want to plug your show?
- 1:25:42Speaker 13: Go for it.
- 1:25:43Speaker 12: Oh, the 9 to 11 podcast, notlp.com.
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: Check us out.
- 1:25:47Speaker 12: Thank you for having us on the show, Brian. It
- 1:25:48Speaker 12: was really cool.
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: You know I always love having you guys on.
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: Like I said, I feel like I'm such a rube
- 1:25:53Speaker 8: after the conversations you guys have had.
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: I talk about crap all the time.
- 1:25:57Speaker 13: What do I care?
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: I like Disney.
- 1:26:00Speaker 10: Well.
- 1:26:00Speaker 9: When I get back home, I'm going to watch Can't
- 1:26:02Speaker 9: Stop the Music again. It's been a long time since
- 1:26:04Speaker 9: I've seen that one.
- 1:26:05Speaker 11: Actually, last night we had a whole Disney conversation. I
- 1:26:08Speaker 11: don't even remember where we were sitting, but yeah, Christian,
- 1:26:10Speaker 11: we were picking out like, oh, it was while we
- 1:26:12Speaker 11: were waiting for the shuttle that didn't come, by the way.
- 1:26:14Speaker 11: If we want to go into a side bitching story,
- 1:26:16Speaker 11: but I won't bother with that. But while we were
- 1:26:17Speaker 11: sitting there waiting, we were talking about the weird middle
- 1:26:19Speaker 11: range there of like classic Disney's awesome.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: And then, like, they're doing some cool stuff now, but
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: there was, like, that 90s run. And, like, what the hell? Like,
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: there was just a lot of off ones. I'm just like, what?
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: So I'm not above talking Disney.
- 1:26:32Speaker 13: What do I care?
- 1:26:32Speaker 9: That's awesome.
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: With that, we will leave you. Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:26:38Speaker 13: We will return next week.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: Same geek time, same geek feed.
- 1:26:40Speaker 13: Thanks for listening.
- 1:26:49Speaker 10: All my life I've been looking for the magic I've
- 1:26:53Speaker 10: been looking for the magic When the sun shines on
- 1:27:01Speaker 10: us it gives us a chance I've been looking for
- 1:27:06Speaker 10: the magic.
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: You came for the magic in my eyes In my
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: eyes Baby, in my eyes.
- 1:27:32Speaker 10: Oh, when Chuck Charlie sits in the air like that
- 1:27:36Speaker 10: She says, hey, I'm looking.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: For the magic.
- 1:27:43Speaker 12: Say so I turn the city, this.
- 1:27:45Speaker 11: Is a desert.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: She says to him, looking for the treasure.
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: Because of all the crap, it's like an island glass.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: On top.
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: And then I never lie, because I never had the time. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: Looking for the magic in my life. in your eyes.
- 1:29:30Speaker 11: The Crypt Keeper was just here.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: Yeah, The Crypt Keeper was just here.
- 1:29:33Speaker 13: Hey, Crypt, we should have gotten so many people. We
- 1:29:37Speaker 13: missed Kyle Labine, we missed Doug Bradley, and The Crypt Keeper.
- 1:29:40Speaker 11: You guys don't know anything about horror.
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: Get out of here.
