- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to jag Zam in the PM today, our final
- 0:19Speaker 1: show of this season as we get prepared for the
- 0:22Speaker 1: off season here in Jacksonville, Let's get into our big things,
- 0:25Speaker 1: brought to you by g EH Government Employees Health Association
- 0:28Speaker 1: Benefits for federal employees and retirees.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We start out with the restart button.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Many years it's the reset button, but this year we're
- 0:35Speaker 1: just restarting things as they get ready for next season.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Liam Cohen talked a little bit about it, and that was.
- 0:40Speaker 3: The message to the team on Monday. Was extremely proud
- 0:45Speaker 3: of a lot of the things that we were able
- 0:47Speaker 3: to accomplish, very proud of their response to adversity into
- 0:51Speaker 3: that one or no message in that next play mentality,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and now that the real work is here to where
- 0:58Speaker 3: we have to go and and reload it. We're not
- 1:02Speaker 3: gonna just stand here and say, man, we're just gonna
- 1:04Speaker 3: redo it all with all the same, same, same same
- 1:07Speaker 3: Because I got us thirteen wins and knocked out of
- 1:08Speaker 3: the playoffs in the first round, so clearly was not
- 1:12Speaker 3: good enough for the full end of the season standard.
- 1:17Speaker 3: But thirty one other teams were having a similar conversation.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Ran They're not gonna be rebuilding everything.
- 1:24Speaker 1: But it's not a run it back situation either, because
- 1:26Speaker 1: you didn't get where you ultimately wanted to go, which
- 1:29Speaker 1: is to the Super Bowl.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Of course. Yeah. If I've learned anything in thirty two
- 1:32Speaker 4: years of doing this is it Momentum doesn't carry over
- 1:34Speaker 4: from one season to the next. You have building blocks
- 1:37Speaker 4: like Trevor's emergence at the end of the year, but
- 1:40Speaker 4: you're not gonna have thirty one takeaways next year. Your
- 1:44Speaker 4: run defense might be good, but will it hold opponents
- 1:46Speaker 4: to eighty five yards rushing per game. There's gonna be
- 1:49Speaker 4: changes on the roster, changes to the coaching staff. So
- 1:52Speaker 4: you can't just say, well, we're gonna pick up where
- 1:54Speaker 4: we started from or where we left off and start
- 1:57Speaker 4: from there. You have to pick up at the bottom
- 1:59Speaker 4: of the hill and push that boulder all the way
- 2:01Speaker 4: back up to the top. It's just the way it
- 2:03Speaker 4: is in today's day and age of professional football, in
- 2:06Speaker 4: free agency and coaching changes.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I think if there's a theme around this organization,
- 2:11Speaker 5: and it'll be what Brian has talked about. Even during
- 2:15Speaker 5: the season, it's been clear that whatever's going on this season.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Once the offseason started, each year is going to be
- 2:23Speaker 5: a very much a restart, especially.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Now there's going to be changes.
- 2:27Speaker 5: They want to get better and pushing the boulder back
- 2:31Speaker 5: up the mountain. I don't think Brian's saying it just
- 2:35Speaker 5: now is the last time you're going to hear it
- 2:37Speaker 5: this offseason around the Jags.
- 2:38Speaker 6: That will be the main focus guy.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Absolutely, it's going to our second big thing today, which
- 2:42Speaker 1: is two ways about it. Obviously you haven't seen him
- 2:45Speaker 1: out on the field in a while, but Travis Hunter
- 2:46Speaker 1: is going to be a main focus of this offseason
- 2:48Speaker 1: and the team going into next year games.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Gladstone talked about.
- 2:51Speaker 1: What their expectations are with him during his rehab process
- 2:54Speaker 1: and going forward.
- 2:56Speaker 7: I think very fair to say that his rehab process
- 2:59Speaker 7: is going as expects didn't. He's hitting it hard, and
- 3:02Speaker 7: you know, obviously the joy that he brings to just
- 3:04Speaker 7: the everyday operation is still something that permeates throughout the
- 3:08Speaker 7: space that he enters. And beyond that and the role
- 3:12Speaker 7: that he'll play, we still expect him to play on
- 3:14Speaker 7: both sides of the ball. Obviously you can take a
- 3:16Speaker 7: peek at, you know, expiring contracts on our roster and
- 3:19Speaker 7: which side of the ball has more Obviously at this
- 3:22Speaker 7: point walking into the off season, corner is a position
- 3:24Speaker 7: that we have a few guys who are on expiring contracts,
- 3:27Speaker 7: so by default you can expect there to be a
- 3:30Speaker 7: higher emphasis on his placement.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Some questions obviously whether Travis Hunter will still be playing
- 3:36Speaker 1: on both sides with football. James Blodsom comes out and
- 3:38Speaker 1: says that's their expectation for them, but also notes that
- 3:41Speaker 1: there is some need in the secondary and that may
- 3:44Speaker 1: be the focus for him going forward.
- 3:46Speaker 5: John, Yeah, it's sort of common sense. If you look
- 3:49Speaker 5: at the depth chart and if you saw him play,
- 3:51Speaker 5: he's a high end corner right out of the box.
- 3:54Speaker 5: As they say, I'd be surprised at this point if
- 3:57Speaker 5: he's not one of the main starting co owners. However
- 4:00Speaker 5: that looks however you play that, meaning they might have
- 4:03Speaker 5: different packages.
- 4:05Speaker 6: He's going to be there.
- 4:06Speaker 5: I think the interesting thing going forward is how he
- 4:08Speaker 5: fits into an offense that functioned at a very high
- 4:11Speaker 5: level without him.
- 4:14Speaker 6: He clearly has skills on that side of the ball.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Brian, I think you know, this big thing number two
- 4:20Speaker 5: might be big thing number one for a lot of
- 4:23Speaker 5: the offseason. I think it's a storyline that we don't know,
- 4:26Speaker 5: and I'm not sure they know how it's going to
- 4:27Speaker 5: play out yet.
- 4:28Speaker 4: No, go back to the previous answer about starting at
- 4:31Speaker 4: the bottom and pushing the boulder up the Hilligain. I
- 4:33Speaker 4: mean that's they'll go into the off season with the
- 4:35Speaker 4: idea that he is a transformative player because that's what
- 4:39Speaker 4: they thought last year when they drafted him. And there's
- 4:41Speaker 4: no way that their mind was changed dramatically on that
- 4:45Speaker 4: issue based on nine weeks that they had him. In fact,
- 4:49Speaker 4: they believe that he was making progress and they were
- 4:52Speaker 4: excited about what was going to happen over the final
- 4:54Speaker 4: half of the season, So I would expect. Yes, John
- 4:57Speaker 4: mentioned it, and it's just common sense, high end corner
- 5:01Speaker 4: and they have a need there and that seems like
- 5:03Speaker 4: it makes sense. But the side of it that I
- 5:05Speaker 4: just keep coming back to is that this is an organization.
- 5:08Speaker 4: But go back to when they signed or traded for
- 5:10Speaker 4: Jacobe Myers, they said, we just want you to come
- 5:12Speaker 4: in and be yourself, Just come be you. Well, Travis
- 5:16Speaker 4: Heener said over and over he's a two way player
- 5:17Speaker 4: and that's what he wants to be.
- 5:18Speaker 6: So I do to expect that he is going to
- 5:20Speaker 6: be that.
- 5:21Speaker 1: So to our final big thing today, which is free
- 5:23Speaker 1: agents and extensions, because as we head into the off season,
- 5:25Speaker 1: there's going to be a whole bunch of free agents
- 5:27Speaker 1: that need to be considered whether or not they're coming
- 5:29Speaker 1: back to Jacksonville, and also some contract extensions that could
- 5:32Speaker 1: happen as well. One of the big free agents is
- 5:35Speaker 1: going to be running back Travesty at them said he
- 5:37Speaker 1: has his choice, like to stay here in jack most definitely.
- 5:40Speaker 8: I feel like when I got duck to I wanted
- 5:42Speaker 8: to be one of the best running beast to ever,
- 5:44Speaker 8: you know, pulling New Jersey. I want to be remember
- 5:46Speaker 8: with let the guys Fred Taylor, Marius Jones, Juli you know,
- 5:51Speaker 8: you had Leonard Fronet, just guys who have been here,
- 5:53Speaker 8: Like you want to set that standard, you want to.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Live a legacy.
- 5:56Speaker 8: I feel like I was able to do that at Clemson.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:58Speaker 8: That's why I went there to the legacy, to leave
- 6:00Speaker 8: a legacy, and I feel you've got people to come
- 6:02Speaker 8: and follow that now and obviously you won't do it
- 6:05Speaker 8: in the NFL. But it's just a different It's just different.
- 6:08Speaker 8: It's not colleges. Different of how everything works, and that's
- 6:11Speaker 8: the business side of it. And aspects and things that
- 6:14Speaker 8: go into it that you I might not ever understand,
- 6:17Speaker 8: but it's not for me to understand, so I kind
- 6:19Speaker 8: of just stop trying to figure those things out and
- 6:21Speaker 8: just focus on what I could do on the field
- 6:23Speaker 8: and everything else else take care of itself.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And there's a lot of stuff that goes into this.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We don't know who will stay and who they'll resign,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but I think it is a little bit different to
- 6:32Speaker 1: kind of hear these players saying, hey, I want to
- 6:34Speaker 1: stay here, whether it's Traves Etn, treyvon Walker, these are
- 6:37Speaker 1: talented players that want to stay here long term, maybe
- 6:40Speaker 1: something that hasn't happened a ton with past regimes, but
- 6:43Speaker 1: you're seeing the buy in now.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and listen, they've done a lot of work to
- 6:48Speaker 4: make this a place where players wanted to be, whether
- 6:51Speaker 4: it's the coaching staff they built around them, or the
- 6:53Speaker 4: support staff, the dining facility. I mean, everything about being
- 6:56Speaker 4: in Jacksonville right now is different than it has been
- 6:59Speaker 4: at any point in the past. So I can see
- 7:01Speaker 4: why guys like that would want.
- 7:02Speaker 2: To be here.
- 7:02Speaker 4: And by the way, these are guys who are core
- 7:06Speaker 4: members of what you have been this season. Etn in
- 7:09Speaker 4: particular fourteen touchdowns. I would want him back. The price
- 7:13Speaker 4: has got to be right, and that's what they're talking
- 7:15Speaker 4: about when it comes to considerations. But being a Jacksonville
- 7:18Speaker 4: Jaguar John is different now than it was before the
- 7:21Speaker 4: season began, where people looked and said, well, what are
- 7:24Speaker 4: they really Well, Liam Cohen, Tony Biselli and James Gladstone
- 7:27Speaker 4: have redefined what this franchise is and players know that
- 7:30Speaker 4: this is a place they can win.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a place players want to be.
- 7:34Speaker 5: And on Monday or Tuesday, Ryan, you said, hey, this
- 7:39Speaker 5: transition tag could be a possibility for ETN.
- 7:42Speaker 6: That makes a lot of sense.
- 7:43Speaker 5: They need him back for what they want to do
- 7:45Speaker 5: offensively that It was interesting in the press conference when
- 7:48Speaker 5: James Gladstone was talking about Trayvon Walker and being such
- 7:52Speaker 5: a core a guy that you want around the Jaguars.
- 7:56Speaker 5: He's a phrase want to move forward with. I thought
- 7:59Speaker 5: that was the key phrase with Trayvon. So let's hope,
- 8:04Speaker 5: because we all like Travon Walker on this show a lot,
- 8:06Speaker 5: let's hope that that's a thing going forward.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I'd love to see that.
- 8:11Speaker 5: But I think the overriding storyline is with this success
- 8:16Speaker 5: with the vibe, the culture, whatever you call it, it's real.
- 8:21Speaker 5: And you know, the guys they keep will be guys
- 8:24Speaker 5: that fit into.
- 8:25Speaker 6: That, you know.
- 8:26Speaker 4: As they left the press conference, I had a very
- 8:28Speaker 4: brief conversation with James Gladstone today asking about Jaguars DNA
- 8:32Speaker 4: John because that was such a big storyline earlier when
- 8:35Speaker 4: he first came in, and I asked about Trayvon Walker
- 8:38Speaker 4: and he used the term proof of concept. In other words,
- 8:41Speaker 4: the DNA is about toughness. Is there any player that
- 8:45Speaker 4: better defines toughness than Trayvon Walker? The proof of concept
- 8:49Speaker 4: is they asked him to play a certain way and
- 8:51Speaker 4: he did all season long.
- 8:53Speaker 2: With a broken arm and above me too.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So to see what Trayvon's being able to do. We'll
- 8:58Speaker 1: talk a little bit more about what these players do.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Eensions might look like. But we heard a ton from
- 9:02Speaker 1: James Gladstone and Liam Cohen. We'll talk about that more
- 9:04Speaker 1: after the break. Gag Zam brought to you by Field
- 9:11Speaker 1: Auto Group, se Field's first Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Head over to Fields Auto dot com. Welcome back into
- 9:18Speaker 1: jag Zam in the PM today, as we had our
- 9:21Speaker 1: press conference with the GM and the head coach kind
- 9:23Speaker 1: of wrap things up for the season, and it was
- 9:25Speaker 1: about thirty five minutes. I think they both talked so
- 9:28Speaker 1: a lot of little tidbits. I recommend you go to
- 9:30Speaker 1: the YouTube page or Jaguars dot com and check out
- 9:32Speaker 1: the full thing because I think there's a lot of
- 9:34Speaker 1: little bits that were in there and you can kind
- 9:36Speaker 1: of pick up on and maybe look forward to things.
- 9:39Speaker 2: But Brian, what was something?
- 9:40Speaker 1: I think there was a SoundBite that you wanted to
- 9:42Speaker 1: mention that you really kind of hung with you.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Well.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Process is a big word. They use it in corporate
- 9:46Speaker 4: settings and football, and Nick Saban has obviously used it
- 9:50Speaker 4: in his illustrious career. But they talked about pride and
- 9:53Speaker 4: process and here's James Gladstone with his thoughts on it.
- 9:58Speaker 7: When you think back to twenty twenty four, there was
- 10:00Speaker 7: plenty of talent to keep you know, close games, but
- 10:03Speaker 7: we needed to raise the floor and inject in tangibles
- 10:06Speaker 7: into the football team so that we could close games
- 10:08Speaker 7: and to be able to see that come to fruition.
- 10:10Speaker 7: It's certainly something that we can take some pride in.
- 10:13Speaker 7: And really what was so great is Liam's message was
- 10:16Speaker 7: absorbed by our players. It was believed by our players,
- 10:20Speaker 7: but it was going one to zero, and you know,
- 10:22Speaker 7: to be able to say, hey, looking right here, we
- 10:26Speaker 7: need to pour in simply to our process, not worry
- 10:28Speaker 7: so much about the results, and find fulfillment there knowing
- 10:31Speaker 7: that regardless of if we win a Super Bowl or
- 10:34Speaker 7: if we don't, that ball is rolling back down to
- 10:37Speaker 7: the bottom of the hill and we got to start
- 10:38Speaker 7: all the way over.
- 10:41Speaker 4: So, whether whether it's Satan or whether it's Cohen and Gladstone,
- 10:46Speaker 4: the bottom line here is that they were focused on
- 10:49Speaker 4: how they did things and doing things the right way
- 10:51Speaker 4: for the right reason, and trusting that the results would come.
- 10:55Speaker 4: They didn't lean too heavily on what the results were.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Now the results were really good this year, wins, only
- 11:00Speaker 4: four losses in the regular season. They every single week
- 11:04Speaker 4: focused on doing the same thing the same way, because
- 11:08Speaker 4: that guy is how they measured their success. And we
- 11:12Speaker 4: were all here last year we know it wasn't that way.
- 11:15Speaker 4: The process that they put in place, they can now
- 11:17Speaker 4: count on John going forward into twenty twenty six as
- 11:21Speaker 4: being proven and if they continue to do things those way,
- 11:24Speaker 4: the results will continue to come.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Yeah, the culture set, I mean it's and a culture set.
- 11:31Speaker 5: That doesn't mean the roster set. It doesn't mean that
- 11:34Speaker 5: everything is great because you went thirteen and four this year,
- 11:37Speaker 5: but there's no doubt walking around this place. I think
- 11:41Speaker 5: the key is you've coupled what you're talking about with
- 11:45Speaker 5: the every week message that sort of stems from the EVP.
- 11:49Speaker 5: This is the most important game in franchise history. It's
- 11:52Speaker 5: great to be processed, but you better treat that game
- 11:55Speaker 5: important and go try to win it. So I think
- 11:57Speaker 5: there's a really good com nation of that going on
- 12:01Speaker 5: right now. And again, Bryan, you and I've been around
- 12:04Speaker 5: a long time. As Trevor said on Monday, this feels sustainable.
- 12:09Speaker 6: They always couch that with.
- 12:11Speaker 5: It doesn't mean it is sustainable, but if we keep
- 12:14Speaker 5: doing what we're doing, there is a trust that this
- 12:18Speaker 5: process will.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Eventually lead to where they want to go.
- 12:19Speaker 4: If I was going to title the process con it
- 12:21Speaker 4: would be one to zero, right. I mean he said
- 12:23Speaker 4: it every single week, just one game at a time.
- 12:27Speaker 4: It's only about winning one game. You can't focus on
- 12:30Speaker 4: anything else, and it bore out all season long for me.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I feel like we've talked a little bit about this,
- 12:36Speaker 1: but we'll talk more as the offseason goes along, free
- 12:39Speaker 1: agency is going to be big for them this year.
- 12:41Speaker 1: It was last year, but maybe their own players whether
- 12:44Speaker 1: or not they want to retain them. And one of
- 12:45Speaker 1: the big names is going to be Devin Lloyd, who
- 12:47Speaker 1: had an outstanding breakout season this year. And James Gladstone
- 12:51Speaker 1: talked a little bit about what they've seen in their
- 12:53Speaker 1: time here with Devin.
- 12:55Speaker 7: The connection between him the coaching staff was real. Being
- 13:00Speaker 7: deployed in the right ways. He felt confident in the
- 13:02Speaker 7: ways that he was doing it from both defense and
- 13:04Speaker 7: special teams. If you're talking about a guy that is
- 13:07Speaker 7: pointing at an all pro level on defense, but is
- 13:09Speaker 7: running down on kickoff every time we score and making
- 13:12Speaker 7: plaise for us. So extremely happy for Devin and his
- 13:18Speaker 7: production this season and finding real footing in a way
- 13:21Speaker 7: that aligned with what he knew he could be. Look
- 13:24Speaker 7: forward to working through the offseason process with our coaching
- 13:28Speaker 7: staff and everyone else to determine what's best for everybody
- 13:31Speaker 7: and seeing if there's something to be done.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So I think there's a couple of parts to that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Obviously, what we've seen from Devin this year has been outstanding.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Coach Campinelle's gotten a lot out of the players that
- 13:40Speaker 1: he had on his roster. But I think it's also
- 13:42Speaker 1: interesting to kind hear they're going to work on it, right,
- 13:46Speaker 1: it's not a guarantee that he's going to come back,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and John, I think there should be some emphasis in
- 13:52Speaker 1: one year does not necessarily mean that's how they're looking
- 13:55Speaker 1: forward to building the defense, because we may see a
- 13:57Speaker 1: significant change on the defensive side of the football.
- 14:00Speaker 5: In this league, it's year to year and Devin and
- 14:05Speaker 5: many players were great for this franchise this year. Can
- 14:09Speaker 5: you resign them all? I've been saying for two or
- 14:11Speaker 5: three months. This team has some hard decisions to make.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Fans aren't gonna like all those decisions. I hope Devin
- 14:16Speaker 5: Lloyd's back at the position he is. The franchise tag
- 14:21Speaker 5: will be tough. I think it's gonna be tough to
- 14:22Speaker 5: bring Devin Lloyd back. That doesn't mean he wasn't phenomenal
- 14:26Speaker 5: this year. It means it's going to be tough to
- 14:28Speaker 5: bring him back next year.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Seven takeaways, five interceptions, he recovered two fumbles. He was
- 14:32Speaker 4: an excellent football player for them this year. But one
- 14:35Speaker 4: thing that James Gladstone said about three different times in
- 14:37Speaker 4: the middle of the press conference was how the defensive
- 14:40Speaker 4: scheme would evolve, and that means that they always had
- 14:45Speaker 4: a vision for what this defense would be. This year's
- 14:48Speaker 4: defense was what they could do with the players they had.
- 14:51Speaker 4: What they ultimately end up with depends on the players
- 14:54Speaker 4: that they want. Can they find the guys that they want?
- 14:58Speaker 4: They'll talk to Devin Lloyd. Why wouldn't you? He's an
- 15:01Speaker 4: all pro performer, But John, I'm with you, have a
- 15:03Speaker 4: hard time seeing him back here.
- 15:05Speaker 6: The position that he.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Plays is going to be cost prohibitive. And why if
- 15:10Speaker 4: you're Devin Lloyd, would you even consider being a bargain player?
- 15:13Speaker 4: You worked for four years to get to a point
- 15:15Speaker 4: where you had a body of work that you could
- 15:17Speaker 4: show and someone's going to fall in love with it.
- 15:19Speaker 4: There's a couple of teams with more than one hundred
- 15:22Speaker 4: million dollars in cap room and someone's going to come
- 15:24Speaker 4: in and swoop up a six foot three, two hundred
- 15:27Speaker 4: and forty pound athlete who takes the ball away.
- 15:30Speaker 2: We don't have that much money here, do we no?
- 15:32Speaker 4: And it listen, it's worth noting there are other guys
- 15:35Speaker 4: that you want to sign. I mean, maybe you want
- 15:37Speaker 4: to bring Etn back. Brenton Strange is going to need
- 15:39Speaker 4: a contract at some point in time, and then there's
- 15:41Speaker 4: Trayvon Walker who probably plays on his fifth year option,
- 15:44Speaker 4: but we already talked about what an important component he is.
- 15:47Speaker 4: You can't keep everybody, and it's just a fact of life.
- 15:50Speaker 4: The Jaguars have not had to let good players go
- 15:53Speaker 4: very often. They will.
- 15:55Speaker 6: Parker Washington had it. Absolutely can't forget him.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Lots of names, lots of stuff going on.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Let's also talk a little bit about what this offseason
- 16:03Speaker 1: will look like for the front office, because at this
- 16:06Speaker 1: time last year they were still trying to figure out
- 16:07Speaker 1: who the head coach was going to be. There wasn't
- 16:09Speaker 1: a GM quite yet, and James Gladstone talked about what
- 16:12Speaker 1: he's going to do differently this time around the.
- 16:15Speaker 7: Fact that the timeline of just the scouting cycle remaining
- 16:19Speaker 7: consistent up to this point, I'm in a very similar
- 16:23Speaker 7: place that I was this time last year with the draft,
- 16:26Speaker 7: with pro free agency. The piece that is obviously sped
- 16:30Speaker 7: up is now the understanding of our current roster and
- 16:33Speaker 7: not being forced to sort of dive into that with
- 16:37Speaker 7: very little nuances and depth to it. So I think
- 16:41Speaker 7: that's a really helpful piece in order to make some
- 16:43Speaker 7: decisions now. Procedurally, we incorporated new functions and mechanisms that
- 16:50Speaker 7: our scouting staff and our coaching staff didn't necessarily have
- 16:53Speaker 7: experience with in the past. So obviously those will be
- 16:57Speaker 7: new wrinkles that will work in looking forward to seeing
- 17:00Speaker 7: those unfold in real time.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So obviously talking a little bit about that scouting process,
- 17:06Speaker 1: what this is going to look like? John, the Rams
- 17:08Speaker 1: organization doesn't usually go to the combine. He may kind
- 17:10Speaker 1: of go about things differently, So what could this offseason look.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Like for them?
- 17:13Speaker 5: What'd be surprised if the Jaguars, I mean, JAG's what
- 17:15Speaker 5: we represented to the combine. I don't think it'll be
- 17:18Speaker 5: the entire entourage. I think James said it how it
- 17:24Speaker 5: should be said. His outward process, meaning looking at draft picks,
- 17:28Speaker 5: looking at free agents, didn't really change last year. He
- 17:31Speaker 5: had done all that for the Rams. He took his
- 17:33Speaker 5: knowledge and he brought it here. It's fine people working
- 17:36Speaker 5: around him now have a year of knowing how he
- 17:39Speaker 5: wants to do.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Things in the off season.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Probably the biggest takeaway, Brian, when you're looking at your
- 17:45Speaker 5: own roster, which he had to do last year. He
- 17:48Speaker 5: had to cram for the test, he had to study,
- 17:51Speaker 5: he had to go off books, and by the time
- 17:54Speaker 5: Freedoms Ye rolled around, I'm sure he would tell you
- 17:56Speaker 5: he knew the team, but he didn't like it wasn't
- 17:59Speaker 5: inside of him. Now, every guy on this roster, they've
- 18:03Speaker 5: talked about in the practice field, they've talked about in October. Hey,
- 18:06Speaker 5: what are you thinking early on about traffic? What are
- 18:08Speaker 5: you thinking early on about I'm just naming names. So
- 18:12Speaker 5: there's going into the off season. They all know how
- 18:15Speaker 5: they feel about these guys. They have a core feel.
- 18:18Speaker 6: For the roster.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Whereas last year it was like you've been reading a book.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Now they've lived it.
- 18:24Speaker 4: And then, just to put an example to that, they
- 18:27Speaker 4: knew that Traylon Walker was a tough guy. Last year,
- 18:29Speaker 4: everyone did big, strong, physical top. He was the number
- 18:32Speaker 4: one overall draft pick, obviously, but they have a different
- 18:35Speaker 4: level of understanding and appreciation for a guy who dislocates
- 18:39Speaker 4: his wrist. And if you go back and watch the
- 18:41Speaker 4: play that he did that aging in San Francisco, you
- 18:43Speaker 4: see a guy flying across the field to make a play,
- 18:47Speaker 4: and then the play where he hurt his knee where
- 18:49Speaker 4: he had the tight end and the right tackle against
- 18:51Speaker 4: the Chargers and shoved him to the sideline and made
- 18:54Speaker 4: a big third down stopping and then he kept trying
- 18:56Speaker 4: to play. So you have a greater appreciation of feeling
- 19:00Speaker 4: in your gut. You know exactly who these guys are
- 19:03Speaker 4: as opposed to who you think they are, because you
- 19:06Speaker 4: watch them on tape and you talk to them, you
- 19:08Speaker 4: watch them practice, you watch them in the medical room,
- 19:11Speaker 4: you watch them on the road. You know intimately who
- 19:15Speaker 4: the players on your team are this year, and that's
- 19:17Speaker 4: a huge advantage.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Kind Yeah, I think we all sort of feel like
- 19:20Speaker 5: walking around, I consider Brenton and Brenton Strange and Trayvon
- 19:24Speaker 5: Walker sort of the identity of this franchise right now.
- 19:27Speaker 5: They are the guys. Oh, that's what this team wants
- 19:30Speaker 5: to be. They didn't know that last year. They hoped
- 19:33Speaker 5: you hope if you look at Brenton Strange in the
- 19:35Speaker 5: practice field, no tag, you're like, well, I hope he's
- 19:37Speaker 5: what I think he is because that's special. Well now
- 19:39Speaker 5: you've seen special, and so yeah, I think that is
- 19:44Speaker 5: That's everything in terms of trying to piece together.
- 19:47Speaker 4: A roster Jaguars DNA. Those two guys define it seeing
- 19:50Speaker 4: what it's.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Going to be going forward as well.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Say with here, we're going to talk a little bit
- 19:54Speaker 1: about what went well this season and what they need
- 19:56Speaker 1: to work on in the off season. For twelve years,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Dreambinders Homes have been pround to call themselves the official
- 20:04Speaker 1: homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreambinders dot com for
- 20:07Speaker 1: all of the available inventory and go Jacks. Welcome back
- 20:12Speaker 1: into jags Am this afternoon, our final show of this season.
- 20:16Speaker 1: We are going to talk a little bit as we
- 20:18Speaker 1: look back.
- 20:19Speaker 2: At the season.
- 20:19Speaker 1: We'll take some time after this of course too, but
- 20:22Speaker 1: just kind of looking back, we're looking at what this
- 20:24Speaker 1: team did well and what they can get better at.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So better and best of Brian, when you look back
- 20:29Speaker 1: at this team, what's something they can get better at
- 20:31Speaker 1: and what were they really the best.
- 20:32Speaker 4: At this year? I loved it. They talked about the
- 20:34Speaker 4: news conference they three better, three best, and they'll have
- 20:36Speaker 4: that for every individual player who comes back, three things
- 20:40Speaker 4: that they could do better and the three things they
- 20:42Speaker 4: did best this year. So I chose a couple of
- 20:45Speaker 4: different things. First of all, they can get better pass protection,
- 20:48Speaker 4: John If you go back to the middle of October
- 20:50Speaker 4: when the Jaguars lost to the Rams and the Seahawks,
- 20:53Speaker 4: they give a fourteen sacks. They were really good early
- 20:57Speaker 4: and then fourteen sacks. The quarterback was battered. Go back
- 21:00Speaker 4: to December, in back to back games against the Broncos
- 21:04Speaker 4: and Colts, he was hit twenty two times, even though
- 21:06Speaker 4: they won those two games. And then if you go
- 21:08Speaker 4: back and look a little bit at the game on
- 21:10Speaker 4: Sunday against the Bills, there were a couple of throws,
- 21:13Speaker 4: especially early on in the ball game, where it looked
- 21:15Speaker 4: like a bad throw, but you could see that he
- 21:18Speaker 4: couldn't step into the throw because he had somebody in
- 21:20Speaker 4: his face. I think they have to be better at
- 21:23Speaker 4: pass protection. And then I think that they were best
- 21:26Speaker 4: at run defense. I questioned that a bit later in
- 21:28Speaker 4: the year, just how.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Good was this team.
- 21:30Speaker 4: But when you go back and look what they did
- 21:31Speaker 4: to Jonathan Taylor, and you look what they did to
- 21:34Speaker 4: James Cook, they shot him down completely. They were the
- 21:37Speaker 4: best run defense in football. It's one of the things
- 21:40Speaker 4: they did best this year. It allowed them to pressure
- 21:44Speaker 4: the quarterback, which they did I think a top five
- 21:46Speaker 4: number and helped create the takeaways because when they have
- 21:50Speaker 4: to throw the ball, Jaguar's got twenty two interceptions. So
- 21:53Speaker 4: I thought they can be better at pass protection. And
- 21:56Speaker 4: I thought the run defense was one of the best
- 21:58Speaker 4: things they did all year.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Yeah, they were standing run defense and it set up everything.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I think the protection they were good running throughout the
- 22:07Speaker 5: course of the year. I'm not sure they could rely
- 22:10Speaker 5: on it as much as they wanted to, and I
- 22:12Speaker 5: think that put them in some situations where.
- 22:14Speaker 6: It was harder to protect than they wanted it to be.
- 22:17Speaker 6: So it all fits together.
- 22:19Speaker 5: It's hard in the first year, we forget they've only
- 22:22Speaker 5: been putting this plan together since March. To get to
- 22:27Speaker 5: thirteen and four with some stuff that they knew wasn't
- 22:30Speaker 5: ideal is impressive. So I went with a run game
- 22:35Speaker 5: and scoring offense.
- 22:38Speaker 6: The run game was.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Really good in situations when they got outside the tackles
- 22:43Speaker 5: early on, when they could get Travis and Bacheltuton outside.
- 22:47Speaker 5: You saw it even on Sunday, they had some really
- 22:50Speaker 5: good stuff. I think they would like to be able
- 22:53Speaker 5: to run some of their middle stuff a lot better.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I think that will be focused on the running backs
- 22:59Speaker 5: and on what they've got going inside on the offense.
- 23:03Speaker 5: I think that's got to get better because that will
- 23:05Speaker 5: take the offense to the next level. Scoring offense. Look,
- 23:09Speaker 5: it was outstanding. I don't think anybody thought in week
- 23:14Speaker 5: seven that you were getting ready to look at thirty
- 23:18Speaker 5: one thirty two points a game, only one game under
- 23:21Speaker 5: twenty four points.
- 23:21Speaker 6: The rest of the way. If they get where they.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Want to go with the running offense, scoring offens already
- 23:30Speaker 5: already really good, it's long as gonna get better. This
- 23:32Speaker 5: is the team that's going to score a lot of
- 23:33Speaker 5: points next year.
- 23:34Speaker 4: It's the best stretch of offense in Jaguars's history. And
- 23:37Speaker 4: I mean, for someone who's been around the whole time,
- 23:39Speaker 4: I had to go back and really look at the
- 23:40Speaker 4: Mark Brunel, Jimmy Smith, Keenan mccardial, Fred Taylor days, James
- 23:43Speaker 4: Stewart days, and just compare it. I mean, this is
- 23:47Speaker 4: almost a field goal game better twenty seven to twenty
- 23:49Speaker 4: four points or even the ninety nine teams. So it
- 23:51Speaker 4: was a remarkable run on offense. And you mentioned it.
- 23:55Speaker 4: At one point they were scoring thirty four points a game. Yeah,
- 23:58Speaker 4: really did a hell of a job putting points on
- 24:01Speaker 4: the board this year. And you get the sense with
- 24:03Speaker 4: this quarterback that it can get a lot better.
- 24:05Speaker 5: Well, and remark, I think they're still It's hard in
- 24:10Speaker 5: one year because you're drafting and you're waiting for guys
- 24:13Speaker 5: to come along. You signed free agents, you've got guys
- 24:16Speaker 5: that you still sort of, hey, we want to switch
- 24:18Speaker 5: this out. For this to be where they were and
- 24:22Speaker 5: not really have have gotten through the whole shopping list,
- 24:26Speaker 5: It's gonna be interesting next year.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Very very exciting to see. I went on the defensive
- 24:30Speaker 1: side of the football. For me, it was coverage and takeaways.
- 24:34Speaker 1: So obviously takeaways, I think they matched their total from
- 24:37Speaker 1: the year before in the first three weeks, so they
- 24:40Speaker 1: automatically that was a pride of a point of pride
- 24:43Speaker 1: for this defense under Anthony Campanila, to have their face
- 24:46Speaker 1: looking towards the quarterback and towards the ball and making
- 24:49Speaker 1: plays on the ball and getting extra possessions.
- 24:51Speaker 2: That helped a lot.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I think in terms of this scoring offense is getting
- 24:54Speaker 1: extra possessions for the offense from the defense. But later
- 24:57Speaker 1: in the year, and maybe this wasn't an issue the
- 25:00Speaker 1: entire season, but coverage was a problem in the game
- 25:04Speaker 1: against the Buffalo Bills and that's probably, if not the
- 25:06Speaker 1: only factor, one of the main factors why you lost
- 25:08Speaker 1: a football game. So for me, it's the miscommunication on
- 25:11Speaker 1: the back end. And I think they did a great
- 25:13Speaker 1: job with Jordan Lewis and Eric Murray coming in with
- 25:14Speaker 1: those veteran presences. They worked a ton with Antonio Johnson
- 25:18Speaker 1: and Jari Jones and getting them to play to a
- 25:20Speaker 1: higher level. But the breakdowns at points with Greg Newsom
- 25:24Speaker 1: and Andrew Wingert, I think were some of the biggest
- 25:27Speaker 1: issues that we saw.
- 25:28Speaker 2: When you can give up explosives.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Like that, that's a problem because as good as you
- 25:32Speaker 1: can be on the run defense and anywhere else in
- 25:34Speaker 1: the defense, if you're giving up explosives, you're basically giving
- 25:36Speaker 1: back what you did for the first parts of that possession.
- 25:40Speaker 2: So for me, those were the big factors.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And I don't know if that's all new people, if
- 25:43Speaker 1: that's working on the communications, getting people healthy. You were
- 25:46Speaker 1: without Jordan Lewis late, But I think the secondary is
- 25:49Speaker 1: a point of focus for sure when I'm looking at
- 25:51Speaker 1: how they're going.
- 25:52Speaker 5: To deal with that.
- 25:53Speaker 4: We heard James Gladstone mentioned, you know, if you look
- 25:55Speaker 4: at a roster. He was talking about Travis Hunter, in particular,
- 25:57Speaker 4: but if you look at the roster, you can see
- 25:58Speaker 4: expiring contract for News is one of those, Monterrek Brown
- 26:01Speaker 4: is one of those. It makes sense for Travis to
- 26:04Speaker 4: sort of slot in there. You missed him. He's an
- 26:07Speaker 4: elite level corner and you had those two breakdowns in
- 26:10Speaker 4: the fourth quarter in coverage and boy you want them back.
- 26:16Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, you like those back, and look, injuries are
- 26:20Speaker 6: part of it.
- 26:21Speaker 5: But I think if you looked at it from a
- 26:25Speaker 5: logical point of view, you thought you're gonna have Kalb Branson. Yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 5: you thought you were gonna have Travis Hunter, So you
- 26:33Speaker 5: thought you're gonna Jordan Lewis. If I was listing those,
- 26:37Speaker 5: I think people putting together the roster would have thought
- 26:40Speaker 5: those would have been three of your what top seven
- 26:43Speaker 5: eight defend maybe better. So I think they will probably
- 26:49Speaker 5: try to add one more corner outside of the names
- 26:52Speaker 5: I just mentioned, But you don't have to add a
- 26:54Speaker 5: lot to get a lot better there if the guys
- 26:58Speaker 5: that you were counting on come back the way you
- 27:00Speaker 5: think they will, and just to.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Know it on the takeaways thirty one, second most in
- 27:04Speaker 4: franchise history, one of only four teams ninety nine two
- 27:07Speaker 4: thousand and seven, twenty seventeen to now twenty twenty five,
- 27:11Speaker 4: that got more than thirty takeaways and they were second
- 27:13Speaker 4: in the league to the Bears. I mean they said
- 27:15Speaker 4: that they had the most interceptions in the NFL this
- 27:18Speaker 4: season with twenty two. It really was remarkable what they did,
- 27:22Speaker 4: and you listed all the reasons why. But you can
- 27:24Speaker 4: still change and have your face at the quarterback and
- 27:26Speaker 4: not necessarily make those plays. It was a fun season
- 27:29Speaker 4: to watch this defense take a dramatic journ of one
- 27:32Speaker 4: of our biggest storylines from training camp.
- 27:34Speaker 5: And not insignificant in the secondary. I mentioned those three
- 27:37Speaker 5: guys you also this year. You know we talk about
- 27:41Speaker 5: guys yea, Antonio Johnson and Garan Jones are all of
- 27:46Speaker 5: a sudden, you list those two guys, you list Murray,
- 27:51Speaker 5: you list Jordan Lewis, Travis Hunter, and Kea ransall coming back.
- 27:56Speaker 5: But now, all of a sudden, you're good in the secondary.
- 27:58Speaker 6: So it's it.
- 28:01Speaker 5: It struggled at the end because of some circumstances, but
- 28:05Speaker 5: you know that's an area with one ad that's gonna
- 28:09Speaker 5: look a lot different next year.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Absolutely, something they're gonna touch on. I'm sure, Uh, stay well, us.
- 28:14Speaker 1: We'll tell you what is coming up the rest of
- 28:16Speaker 1: the off season here in Jacksonville.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Jags fans.
- 28:21Speaker 1: If you want customiz Jaguarts furnature for your home, check
- 28:23Speaker 1: out zipchaar dot com to browse all the customizable options.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Zip Chair is furniture for fans and dailies also brings
- 28:29Speaker 1: you jag Zam this week.
- 28:31Speaker 2: It's nicer here.
- 28:36Speaker 9: Yeah, I got it. Obviously not the way we wanted
- 28:40Speaker 9: that thing to add.
- 28:43Speaker 10: You know a billion different players you look at, you
- 28:45Speaker 10: want to call Zack who want plays back at At.
- 28:47Speaker 9: The end of the day, didn't get it done. That's
- 28:50Speaker 9: just the reality. So frustrated Hardwood. But man, I can't
- 28:59Speaker 9: be more proud of the group that I've ever worked with.
- 29:01Speaker 6: So with that, it's my privilege to introduce to you,
- 29:06Speaker 6: Liam Kung.
- 29:10Speaker 9: Side.
- 29:10Speaker 3: You just made a dream absolutely come true and we're
- 29:14Speaker 3: gonna work our tails off to bring championships to jackson.
- 29:18Speaker 9: What is our a? What is your A?
- 29:22Speaker 10: That thing will help us win games and that's what
- 29:26Speaker 10: this is all about. You guys made this extremely extremely
- 29:32Speaker 10: gratifying to be a football coach, and.
- 29:37Speaker 9: This has been an unbelievable honor to be involved with
- 29:40Speaker 9: you guys, and to be with you, guys, this whole proces,
- 29:42Speaker 9: this whole run nay.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Whole season.
- 29:46Speaker 2: A fun ride.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Was an abrupt end to the season, but I had
- 29:51Speaker 1: no expectations to have gotten to the points that they
- 29:53Speaker 1: were at this year, so it was really fun, especially
- 29:55Speaker 1: these last two months on that a game nextree Ah.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Man, John, I think both you and I said nine
- 29:59Speaker 4: wins would be a dramatic first season for Leam because
- 30:02Speaker 4: they got him back into that conversation. They'd be in
- 30:05Speaker 4: the hunt for the division title race in December, and
- 30:08Speaker 4: it turned out to be the best division title race
- 30:10Speaker 4: I can recall. I mean, you had to win every
- 30:12Speaker 4: week to stay ahead of the Texans and to win
- 30:14Speaker 4: the division, to win thirteen games, the second most Enfranchise history,
- 30:18Speaker 4: his first year as a head coach, his coordinator's first
- 30:21Speaker 4: year in that role, James Gladstone in his first year
- 30:23Speaker 4: of his role in Tony. I mean it really the
- 30:25Speaker 4: story of this season is one that you could write
- 30:27Speaker 4: a book about.
- 30:28Speaker 5: They found their regime, they found their coach, they found
- 30:31Speaker 5: their identity, their quarterback find a quarterback, and you know,
- 30:35Speaker 5: the team in the city got its pride in this
- 30:38Speaker 5: thing back and.
- 30:40Speaker 6: You know It's one of those things. Brian. We've seen
- 30:43Speaker 6: them all. You know, you've seen him.
- 30:44Speaker 5: I've seen most ninety six, ninety nine, seventeen. This is
- 30:50Speaker 5: on that rushmore. Their goal is to get one that's
- 30:53Speaker 5: above that.
- 30:53Speaker 4: I yes, and I should have sent you the video
- 30:56Speaker 4: I took of the stadium. You probably each took one.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Two towels waving right after the flyover and the national anthem.
- 31:04Speaker 4: That was as good a scene as any I have
- 31:06Speaker 4: ever seen in this building. That includes the divisional game
- 31:10Speaker 4: against the Dolphins, where there was just such intensity for
- 31:14Speaker 4: that ninety nine team. It was amazing. And when you
- 31:17Speaker 4: look at all the things that are exciting about this,
- 31:19Speaker 4: to have that fan based tied in like they are,
- 31:21Speaker 4: to believe like it appears they do, and what's going
- 31:24Speaker 4: on here, I think the future is so bright.
- 31:26Speaker 6: I just can't.
- 31:27Speaker 4: I can't be too down. I know there's still people
- 31:29Speaker 4: in this room, in this building that are down sure
- 31:32Speaker 4: about what happened, But I just I'm smiling because it
- 31:35Speaker 4: feels good.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Look, it takes a while to get it's so hard.
- 31:40Speaker 6: You start in March.
- 31:41Speaker 5: And you go to January. You're not going to walk
- 31:45Speaker 5: in here dancing and be fired up for the next
- 31:47Speaker 5: practice on the Tuesday after the regular season. But they'll
- 31:51Speaker 5: get through that and then they'll be ready to push
- 31:54Speaker 5: that boulder up the mountains.
- 31:56Speaker 6: That look.
- 31:57Speaker 5: Don't think about the bowlder right now, you know, if
- 31:59Speaker 5: you're a player or that'll come and they'll work.
- 32:03Speaker 6: To get there.
- 32:04Speaker 5: So it's exciting to be around this. Really very cool.
- 32:07Speaker 1: A good visual to go out on as well with
- 32:08Speaker 1: the stadium because that's the last time we'll see it
- 32:10Speaker 1: that way as the renovations will begin. It'll be lower
- 32:14Speaker 1: capacity next year and then we'll look a little bit
- 32:16Speaker 1: different after that.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Very cool by the way that that stadium, those fans
- 32:21Speaker 5: had that moment in that stadium right like there's a
- 32:24Speaker 5: lot of fans were there who had been at games
- 32:26Speaker 5: for thirty years, thirty two years. Won't be like that again,
- 32:29Speaker 5: but to have it go out with that, yeah, pretty cool.
- 32:32Speaker 6: Pretty cool.
- 32:34Speaker 2: We are going to take a break. Everybody in this
- 32:35Speaker 2: building is going to take a break.
- 32:36Speaker 1: We'll be back with you after Super Bowl mid February,
- 32:40Speaker 1: so enjoy the rest of the playoff run and Super
- 32:42Speaker 1: Bowl Sunday, and then we'll come back and get re
- 32:44Speaker 1: into things again as we learn about what they're going
- 32:46Speaker 1: to do with this team in the offseason. We'll see
- 32:48Speaker 1: you then.
