- 0:03Welcome back to have some with a blunt penknife extra material I
- 0:09have here today with the Glorious, Fraser Gregory.
- 0:13However, either hi everybody. No stranger to any hands for
- 0:18listeners. In fact, this is where you first
- 0:21set your Stahl. Isn't it this podcast?
- 0:23Yes. Yes.
- 0:25You were the first person that allowed me to come on and run
- 0:29book on our monson's and see Ludicrous things about Doctor
- 0:33Who. So this is where it all began,
- 0:35folks. He's the one to blame.
- 0:37I mean, isn't a non rude way before you even come at me with
- 0:41any kind of stop it. Our broken many are person into
- 0:45podcasting now you know, I feel like you might be my greatest
- 0:49success or I wouldn't go that far but thank you for the
- 0:54compliment. So today we are here to not talk
- 0:59about Doctor Who no a rare. Revenge instead we are, is this
- 1:05is the first of many episodes of hamster extra features going out
- 1:11to members only and the premise of this, is that contributors to
- 1:18hamster. Come on and talk about another
- 1:21show that they like, you do like this show, right?
- 1:24Why? Yes.
- 1:25Oh good. Yes.
- 1:26So they choose a show. We talk about the show sort of
- 1:30as an overview and then We select five, I don't know if
- 1:34you've chosen five, you love five, you hate, but you're going
- 1:37to select five episodes, and give me fabulous reasons as to
- 1:41why, and we will do commentaries on those episodes.
- 1:45So it's just a nice, little overview of some different shows
- 1:48and what your opinion is of it. So what have you chosen them
- 1:52Fraser? Well, it's cold outside.
- 1:55There's no kind of atmosphere. I'm all alone.
- 1:58More or less? Its red dwarf.
- 2:02Okay. So I have a question for you
- 2:04straight off, and that is why Red Dwarf you could have chosen
- 2:09any TV show could have done but I think Red Dwarf is the one
- 2:14after Doctor Who that I'm most qualified to talk about if that
- 2:19makes sense. It's the one that I've watched
- 2:21the most. It's the one that I've loved the
- 2:24most outside of Doctor Who so anything else I'm going to be
- 2:28kind of scrambling around, you know, trying to find things to
- 2:31talk about where's Red? Dwarf.
- 2:32I feel is is one. That was a, you know, another
- 2:35big part of me growing up and I I came in a red dwarf and it
- 2:40would have been seasoned 500k quite late then.
- 2:45Yeah, I am giving my paternal been watching a snippet of of an
- 2:50episode of series 3-1 date and whenever I was out and I just
- 2:53had the Telly. So but it was Series 5 where I
- 2:55really started getting into watching it.
- 2:57So yeah. And quite lated bought you know
- 3:01I was Hooked on that. And I did exactly the same with
- 3:04red dwarf as I did with Doctor Who and went out and bought as
- 3:07much material as I could. And I got the VHS has, you would
- 3:10only get Series 2 and Series 3 back in those days?
- 3:15So I got those played those to death, what the books read them.
- 3:19I'm just to get the M, the short Loops magazine and that was,
- 3:24that was, that was hope for you or two.
- 3:26So, I had You know, subscribe to this magazine and let's make a
- 3:31Zane. Obviously yeah, it was fun.
- 3:34It was It's comic strips. It was interviews.
- 3:38It was set reports. It was everything you want from
- 3:42a fanzine and suddenly just didn't last.
- 3:46Had a seem to have a good one and then just all of a sudden it
- 3:48just went, you know, just as was kind of hitting a bit of a
- 3:51stride, is it a bit more adult than adults?
- 3:54Who magazine, not really. I mean like I said I mean I
- 3:57would have been I would have to check know exactly when when
- 4:02this would have been a short, tons of research actually.
- 4:06Fraser that this isn't a commentary so I can edit this
- 4:08one to buggery. So we yes of course.
- 4:15Yeah. And when I say me, of course, I
- 4:17mean Mark. Yes.
- 4:21Because the first series was Nick mediate and it just went
- 4:25after that, didn't it? Wikipedia is letting us come
- 4:35here. Anyhow, we'll just see in the
- 4:38mid nineties. When I was sort of mid teen and
- 4:42you're not falling 15, that sort of it.
- 4:45Sure it didn't feel any more adult than indeed or, um, you
- 4:49know, these guns, obviously, be aged aimed.
- 4:54Funding model but then they can all do reader.
- 4:56Remember getting, you know talk to her magazines and they were
- 4:59sometimes a little bit hard to read and just because of, you
- 5:03know, the amount of information, the amount of text for this
- 5:05magazine felt very easy to read and saw a little bit.
- 5:10Yeah it more all the audience but not if that makes sense.
- 5:14I'm think to read. Then you know you said about the
- 5:17books, I think I had one of those books but it was like
- 5:21several episodes of the first Ruiz.
- 5:25Truncated into one novel. Is that right over?
- 5:28My completely imagining that. Yeah, let me just be able to
- 5:32pull it off your bookshelf now is this?
- 5:34Wow. Yeah.
- 5:34That's the what I haven't? Yeah.
- 5:36Infinity. Welcomes all for drivers.
- 5:38Yeah drivers, yes. Well, I didn't know if it was if
- 5:41it was red dwarf or if it was infinitely, welcomes, careful
- 5:44drivers. Because for the benefit, well,
- 5:47Jennifer going to be showing the video this.
- 5:48But for the benefit of people who are just listening and the
- 5:51cover is just got them at a dwarf logo on and then it's got
- 5:54like a Vapor trail of a spaceship as smash the corner
- 5:57office saying, see an Infinity welcomes, careful drivers.
- 6:01So put the book itself on the spine just says Red Dwarf.
- 6:05Just as red dwarf on the bucket. You'd never front cover, it's
- 6:08never mentioned. Oh no red dwarf, infantry
- 6:13buttons, careful drugs. There you go, I've learned
- 6:15something is the episodes from series 1.
- 6:17Yeah just not this discovered, the first two series.
- 6:21What all of the fuss is? There is in one knot.
- 6:24Yeah, it It's, you know, goes through the open till I'm
- 6:31getting Creighton and, and back to First, this one and a half
- 6:37series, I think, actually, because it covers series one
- 6:40where the get marooned in space and the star becomes the last
- 6:44human being alive. And then and the find Creighton
- 6:47in the do the back-to-back non-public reality better than
- 6:51life. But in life, virtual reality
- 6:53game. Which they get trapped in at the
- 6:55end of the book. So the end of book is some kind
- 6:57of getting out of out of that not launches into the The next
- 7:06the next book is well them is better than life, so that are
- 7:10acceptable. Comrade.
- 7:11It was so and then there's a few more books in the kind of stock
- 7:15Divergent a little bit from the, what was You know what was Sean?
- 7:24I think don't have it backwards and but the one after that, the
- 7:29last human is, you know, by this point you're saying part of the
- 7:33show but you're getting really quite more local original novel.
- 7:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:38Very much. So because obviously retro off
- 7:43was written as you'll see on the book by a chap called Grant
- 7:45neela ah yes David huge Brother David And that sort of thing but
- 7:55not necessary. Not as much as that because you
- 7:58know, Granny a lot is Rob Grant and Doug me.
- 7:59There are two people who've who came together at a rate, you
- 8:04know, the first six series and and so on.
- 8:07And then, unfortunately, their working relationship ended
- 8:11quiet. And I think in the wall, I mean,
- 8:14we'll go into that because I want to Circle back around
- 8:17again, very quickly because you've give me some detail about
- 8:21the magazine, you've given me some details.
- 8:23About the novels. Yeah, but my initial question
- 8:27was why the TV show? So what was it about this TV
- 8:32show that connected with you so much him.
- 8:35I think it was a kind of fill a gap, to be honest.
- 8:39I mean, let's say Doctor Who went off in 1989 Red Wolf
- 8:43started in 1988 where I picked up a phone there a bit on
- 8:46Wikipedia know is 92 1982 is when you know Series 5 first
- 8:52aired. So that's that's the prime time
- 8:55for the science. In short to come along and just
- 8:57sit in my subconscious. And, you know, feel that sort of
- 9:01Gap where we're Sylvester McCoy isn't there anymore.
- 9:05You know, you've got the Doctor Who still there, but red dwarf
- 9:08is very much filling that Gap. So the same sort of time there's
- 9:13this things like Quantum Leap on the TV and Sup.
- 9:19Babylon 5 time. Yeah, early 90s.
- 9:23Yeah, it'll be nice. You know you've got some ideas,
- 9:25I started in 93 and that was a year after Babylon 5, I think
- 9:30so. Yeah.
- 9:31So there's a lot of other things going on there that are.
- 9:35You know, I think some night bleed enough for a decade where
- 9:38Doctor Who wasn't on 90s, was the time for like Peak Telly
- 9:44fantasy. There was so much Star Trek, as
- 9:47you hate Babylon, 5 Buffy, the Vampire.
- 9:49Pia Slayer comes along often. See the X-Files, like, it was,
- 9:54there was all this very stylish, very exciting.
- 9:57Genre TV bench and out, and it's spawned a lot of other shows, as
- 10:02well. There was a lot of sort of like
- 10:03one hit, two it to series shows the Roswell.
- 10:07Most well, yes, yeah. That here nineties as well.
- 10:10And that was supposed to be the big thing, wasn't it?
- 10:12But that never that never really took off.
- 10:14Ha ha ha. And so, there was that kind of
- 10:18element of it being Filling a hole in a gap to as a nice 30
- 10:23minutes. Okay?
- 10:23But the other thing was it was so bloody good.
- 10:26Yeah, you know, it's, you're looking for sci-fi program but
- 10:31you're getting a sitcom. You know, it starts off
- 10:34essentially as a sitcom, the science-fiction elements of
- 10:37there are throughout the first couple of series, but it's not
- 10:39really until sort of like, Series 3 onwards where the
- 10:41really start to push what they're going to do with science
- 10:45fiction. So it becomes more like a
- 10:46science fiction sitcom after that.
- 10:50But you know, it's a sitcom first and foremost and has to be
- 10:54funny. Then it was it really made me is
- 10:57you know, it made me laugh. First time I watched it the
- 11:01second time I watched it third fourth. you know, on an episode
- 11:05last night because I watched an episode of accepting that really
- 11:08upset as Workout or band, or what am I going to put on a
- 11:14chair? Or ba put on a?
- 11:15Put on an episode of Red Dwarf? Which one did you watch?
- 11:18It was Qui. That is a classic.
- 11:24Basically appreciate what you got because I'll find a
- 11:27stochastic exactly as scripted as well.
- 11:36The performances by by everyone in that one is just it's just
- 11:40amazing because it starts off and it's a very limited sure.
- 11:45They don't you start off and you've got four characters,
- 11:48you've got Lister, you've got rimmer, you've got the cut, and
- 11:50you've got Holly and nuts it, and there.
- 11:53As for characters have to carry two series until the end of just
- 11:58Creighton and then you've got 55 code AS have to carry your whole
- 12:01series. I was reckon the, you know, the
- 12:04sort of the very, very how I concept episodes that start
- 12:09hitting is of late two and then three four, five and six but I
- 12:13feel like it takes a little while for those two billion and
- 12:16you're right. The first series is very much
- 12:20like a one-room sitcom yeah you know and death.
- 12:23Focuses on character drama, a lot of the time.
- 12:25Absolutely. And he's really good character
- 12:28drama as well. It is.
- 12:29It's the first series is very much.
- 12:31The old couple in space. Yeah, you know, it's you've got
- 12:35the four characters, but the cat and Holly are very be
- 12:38peripheral, and the cap just comes in wasn't a highlight.
- 12:42But although the serious one, the cat, you know, was it, this
- 12:45is my shiny things. Shiny thing at the top of the
- 12:49string at the bottom. I think he's so charismatic.
- 12:53Mattock, he is he's fantastic character but he's not that the
- 12:56the heart of the show, The Heart of the show is that relationship
- 12:59between Lister and Rima to really, I mean, it's funny.
- 13:05I was thinking this is not the day of list.
- 13:06Those are not very unlikable person either baby.
- 13:10He's an asshole. He's a slob.
- 13:14He's who Revels any slobbery, he's actually proud of being,
- 13:20you know, the kind of guy who Doesn't brush his teeth are,
- 13:24doesn't change his clothes or you know put these under pants
- 13:28on backwards, five weeks to get double double about that sort of
- 13:32thing and it's a lifestyle I can get behind entirely, you know.
- 13:36Absolutely, but he's the hero of the shore, the the other guy,
- 13:39but he's playing against is even worse than him.
- 13:42The sort of why don't you do that?
- 13:44Did you ever see the American version, where they, who made
- 13:47the more they made? They cast is sort of, jock as
- 13:51the lead and I didn't work. At all, because he was really
- 13:54sexy. I mean, I think Ray Charles is
- 13:56pretty sexy, but he's so Charming in that role.
- 13:59Yeah, but you're behind him from the first second.
- 14:03Oh, you're right Rivers. Such a awesome pretentious of
- 14:07vicious asshole. Especially to unlikable,
- 14:12characters, doesn't it to inaudible?
- 14:14Can't the hell did this work? It's the custom.
- 14:17Yeah, you know, it's the right and it's the custom.
- 14:21Everything just comes together. It's that first series, you
- 14:22know, You shouldn't work really you look at it and there's a
- 14:27reason why, you know the latest these odd sort of the middle
- 14:30series, I talked about more than anything is that first series is
- 14:33really, it's finding its feet. You know it's you know the the
- 14:40the sets are of a very questionable standard the actors
- 14:46are finding their feet. The plot the plots are really
- 14:49good and some really good, good ideas in there.
- 14:53I am. But ultimately, it's the second
- 14:55series on where the kind of late were know what we're doing now
- 14:58and the BBC gives them a bit more money and some got bit
- 15:01better sets bit, better ideas. And then the go with that Series
- 15:063 is again, another sort of is a real Leap Forward and the girl
- 15:10from heaven but slow opening shot.
- 15:13The beautiful model work with the slower version of the theme
- 15:16to that sort of like really intense and Haley me why they
- 15:21ever move to CG. III have no, I don't know why
- 15:24because it was the latest Innovation.
- 15:26They wanted to try it out and fair enough.
- 15:27It looks so mad cartoon and they went back to model work later
- 15:30on, but that early model work was so good.
- 15:34Or did you see the one where the re did all the effect also.
- 15:38Yeah, I had. Those are the videos all I had.
- 15:40Yeah. With the cartoons.
- 15:43Yeah. And the put little had think the
- 15:44cartoon ship and had the used to do things like put like little
- 15:47cartoon scholars in our that was offensive water and great.
- 15:51Oh where is that? The motor work in those early
- 15:54Seasons. Yeah, I just think the pan
- 15:56across Red Dwarf in the title sequence.
- 15:58Oh yeah it's Pete's reminds me of the trial sequence at the
- 16:01beginning of a mysterious planet.
- 16:03Yes. Is that sort of standard?
- 16:05Yeah, but that the beauty is is that the, you know, the use
- 16:09those model shots all over and over again.
- 16:11You know, the just got that model of Red Dwarf and the
- 16:14years, you know, the Lord of shots that the model of starbug
- 16:17which was another great innovation in in series 3
- 16:20Because by series 3 You know you kind of running out of ideas on
- 16:25E like well yet we've managed to get two series up.
- 16:28No 12 episodes out of four characters stuck on a ship but
- 16:32we need to do more so than either be getting off the ship.
- 16:35So bringing in starbug bringing in Creighton you know great sort
- 16:39of Boost's. Children, the on boosting the
- 16:42arm to get them going forward in.
- 16:46But I think see how come free they are so confident.
- 16:49Oh yeah. What they're doing and with
- 16:51their High Concepts, and you got stuff like polymorph and think
- 16:54about that coming out and man. It is gold.
- 16:58Yeah, so that's a clever thing because this is like the
- 17:01wouldn't talk through the first quarter to use is room as you
- 17:05know, belief about aliens alien. It's a, it's a quake.
- 17:10Warrior Lena aliens used to hop on phone.
- 17:16He goes, what is it? It's a garbage dump its it's a
- 17:18smoking looking at stop the credit that's so funny that and
- 17:23you know they're leaning into their and series one.
- 17:25They leaning into like The Odd Couple on there.
- 17:27Yeah and what's really interesting is you've got to
- 17:30different classes of people there or I lose I think rimmer
- 17:34thinks yeah he's like middle-class 80 a technical
- 17:37thing is lower class but and Dave Lister.
- 17:40And then you've got like two people from two different
- 17:42regions as well, really. It's very Posh list is from up
- 17:45North. So they're playing on that as
- 17:47well. There's just lots of ways to
- 17:49have conflict between the two characters.
- 17:52Absolutely, I think we must remember the background is quite
- 17:54middle class. He's kind of like, because he's
- 17:57Brothers, it's got couple Brothers as onion.
- 17:59They are, you know, Flying high in the space Corps or captains
- 18:02and doing real well, and he's kind of like the embarrassment
- 18:04of the family. And, you know, the one that
- 18:07can't get past these first engineering exam and So I think
- 18:11there is that that sort of class divide with them as well.
- 18:16I just go back to just feel like this.
- 18:17There's the kind of culture difference between those two
- 18:22characters. It's very clever.
- 18:24Yeah, you know, and I think I've seen comedies where they bring
- 18:28together two people like this stuff from very different
- 18:30backgrounds and it can be a bit agonizing and a bit annoying.
- 18:34Yeah, but like you say, for you bringing Crow, Charles and you
- 18:37bring in Chris Barry and Chris Perry I think is the EPO Red
- 18:41Dwarf. I think all go on.
- 18:43Oh, you're looking absolutely tolls to be honest.
- 18:47Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think I mean, the whole cast
- 18:50or the Caston is just is brilliant in this because it can
- 18:55make or break a show called in none of them are actors.
- 18:59None of them are increase. Their he's a pretty good actor,
- 19:02it wasn't an act according to this little really know.
- 19:05It was an impressionist. Well that was a bold move then.
- 19:08Yeah. Chris Perry.
- 19:09Wasn't that actually cast Alfred Molina is Reema?
- 19:14I don't actually know that is and Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2.
- 19:19Oh wow he was in read was even realize.
- 19:22He was one of the funner than Janet Jones films as well.
- 19:24Be please, dr. Octopus and Sammy.
- 19:26Spider-Man 2, what happened, then how Chris Perry, get the
- 19:29Paul. I think Alfred Molina just, you
- 19:32know, tried and she thought, no, this isn't, this isn't going to
- 19:34work on, get the hand. I would recommend auditioned as
- 19:37well for this show, but instead of cast an act, as what they've
- 19:41done is the cast, Chris Barrie, who was Lexie best known as an
- 19:44impressionist. At the time, he was doing
- 19:46spitting image of Isis and and that you've got Norman Love It.
- 19:50Who was a stand-up comedian, you know?
- 19:54I didn't say, I say there is no performer on this planet.
- 19:57That can deliver our one. Liner with such dryness tunnel
- 20:01absolutely head to the nearest. One of these young Danny.
- 20:07John Jules is probably the closest because he was a dancer
- 20:11and he done made Marion at this point, nor does me and Marine
- 20:15juvenile after. And but you can, he was going
- 20:18into this best known as being a dancer.
- 20:19He was think he turned looks Shop of Horrors.
- 20:23The see, my inseam at the end of The Chorus Line and Little Shop
- 20:25of Horrors. But again, relatively unknown
- 20:27but not known for acting. But then, you've got critic
- 20:30Charles, who is a port of all things are standard Port, who
- 20:36again, you're sort of blink blogs The Producers for an
- 20:40audition and get to the pot of list.
- 20:42Uh, so he comes in and he's, you know, wins over as list.
- 20:47I mean, Chris Powell, he's got got an easy job of playing
- 20:50rimmer because we're no. Rumor is the heal, my mother
- 20:53that also he's the one that was supposed to laugh at and kinda
- 20:59M. You know, he's the butt of the
- 21:02joke. Whereas Lister has to be as
- 21:06we've said the hero, but again, he's available total slob at the
- 21:11same time. Yeah, so it's it Chris clear.
- 21:14Charles Winters over straight away with his his Charisma and
- 21:18makes us like list that makes makes us, you know, listing at
- 21:23the hero more through his performance than anything else.
- 21:26And whereas you know Rema is, you know, it's just an office
- 21:31all about He's a very well played.
- 21:32Also don't get us wrong but I think you know without queer
- 21:35Charles winning us over as Lister would don't then have
- 21:38that, that whole dynamic, you're just looking at the two people
- 21:42and I'm trying to think of another show where it's just a
- 21:45load of unlikable. People swimming like, Heip show.
- 21:50Yeah, yeah. And to a certain extent but the
- 21:53things like it was American kids things with the kids just
- 21:56running around like Gossip Girl and gotten.
- 21:59Oh yeah not as he was. I oh yeah.
- 22:01It's just it's just a short full of people.
- 22:02I don't like I don't want to watch this.
- 22:06But all of them, all of these four, original cast members,
- 22:11come in and do some absolutely fantastic with what they've
- 22:14given, what they've been given that you see a nominal of it is
- 22:17is there was Leave the just absolute dead.
- 22:21You've never seen a computer like this.
- 22:26No. I mean, even even if you haven't
- 22:29watched, like, next Generation anything you do, you got, they
- 22:31computers in sort of Blake's 7 and in Doctor Who, which are are
- 22:36not like this year, though. They are actually capable and
- 22:43functional and Holly comes along.
- 22:46Is all right, dude. Do you remember?
- 22:49I think it's inquiries and it worries of rotten.
- 22:52Plug that wire in there. I think it's the blue one.
- 22:55And then he goes in slow motion explodes over the console.
- 22:58And yes. All right.
- 22:59I think it might be the result. The yellow definitely.
- 23:05So basically what you're saying is all these nobody's come
- 23:08together and then this astonishing chemistry.
- 23:11Absolutely is a result lie. You know that the go on other
- 23:15things, you know, Chris Perry goes and does British Empire.
- 23:18Yeah, there was a point in the nineties.
- 23:20All right? When you could not turn on the
- 23:22TV and not see, Chris Barrie. Absolutely.
- 23:25No goodness away with somebody annoying, which he does so,
- 23:29well, create Charles goes on and Coronation Street.
- 23:32And Danny Jones rules does discussed, Maid Marian, and her
- 23:35merry men, and he, then he goes on to other things such as Death
- 23:40in Paradise. He was a nut.
- 23:42Yeah, Norman love. It is still, you know, it's
- 23:46probably the least successful, he did, get His own sitcom be to
- 23:49get his owns. It had his name in it and I love
- 23:52it. Yeah.
- 23:54So that was 14. I was pretty weird.
- 23:56I remember watching that misleading been like this is a
- 24:00few bits. It was a bit are Mighty Boosh by
- 24:02all accounts. You know, Norman Love.
- 24:04It's very hard work whenever they talk about in the
- 24:08behind-the-scenes documentary, they're all just going on.
- 24:11God, he was there whinging in the rehearsal room about this
- 24:14that and the other but you know what?
- 24:15It's worth it though. It's worth it.
- 24:18Yeah. And then of course Robert
- 24:20Llewellyn comes in, in Sue's 30, actually, maybe he's a VP.
- 24:24Now I'm saying they're all the MVP now and I think I think, I
- 24:28mean, I think I love Robert labelling, I love what he does.
- 24:32McCracken Creighton's starts out as a very interesting code.
- 24:37I think, you know, as the again, the dysfunctional, you know,
- 24:40you've never seen a robot. Like this, a robot.
- 24:42Who is you? Expect the robot in.
- 24:44This is how he ends up ends up. Being sort of like, The Spock of
- 24:48the group P.A down, or he has all the exposition and he
- 24:51delivers it brilliantly and varies.
- 24:53One is what the character starts off as a bhag, bhag bot, his
- 24:56mother calls him. He's this is a sanitation truck.
- 24:58He's a you start off in his first episode of, you know, it's
- 25:04great as the sort of like the bottle.
- 25:05That that's where Creighton comes from.
- 25:07Its the, The Honorable creating the film where it's It's a group
- 25:17of. It's like a family but the leg
- 25:20up a class in the pot, the butler with them and get
- 25:21stranded on a desert island. It's almost like sort of
- 25:25Robinson who absorbs find Robinson and that in the all
- 25:28have to survive and this obviously the butler's the only
- 25:30one that's got anything about them so he kinda takes
- 25:35overcharge you know he's organizing the family and you
- 25:38know from the time that does add a done to come and I respect him
- 25:41as an equal and everything and then they get rescued and it
- 25:44goes back to being a butt like this like this last scene where
- 25:47am I? Hope of getting rescued and
- 25:50returned. The the robot comes insurance at
- 25:52all but where's Crichton and he comes out where these he's
- 25:55dinner suit gone and he's gone back to being that Butler.
- 25:58It's just so like it's really like one of these sort of like
- 26:02really powerful powerful moments of, I can't remember how they
- 26:06react to that, but it's like, oh shit.
- 26:07Yeah, it's really hits his. But anyhow, Creighton was based
- 26:11on that character and you know, cry 10, instead of Creighton
- 26:15there's you would normally spell it and that's the way starts
- 26:18out. As this sort of like really
- 26:19surveil and it's so weird because it's a different actor,
- 26:22isn't that physical? I think he's really good.
- 26:25The boy actor in crying wonderful sequence where he's
- 26:29got all those skeletons dolled up and they all think they're
- 26:32going to get laid. So they're all covered of rivers
- 26:35in dress uniform and everything like that.
- 26:39You sure what about this one? Listen ago, it.
- 26:43Did I ever tell you about my friend?
- 26:44Dice has to be brave. But I think this is the count of
- 26:52develops, you know, creating becomes more like you're
- 26:54stranded. Robot and unfortunate.
- 26:59The short does tend to focus more on creating than it does
- 27:02the other character. So it kind of comes comes
- 27:05through a bit of an idea and C7 where you've got sort of like
- 27:10that separates, which is very quite and heavy of them going at
- 27:13the video and he's, you know, chance constraint without
- 27:16prejudice with. Yeah, yeah, he's heads, blown up
- 27:19and whatnot. And that's that's very funny.
- 27:23Just playing this jealous friend.
- 27:26And it's Exactly, exactly. It's it's much more fun when
- 27:29they have things like you spare heads, but he's like after a few
- 27:31minutes it. What about spare, head, three,
- 27:33he's got dried right at ya. You know what though?
- 27:37There is a late crying episode that I like and series outcry
- 27:41TV. He's a prison.
- 27:44And yeah, he gets old entrepreneurial and starts
- 27:47exploiting the women in the showers and yeah, it did it
- 27:51does. But it's you know at this point
- 27:53what kind of where with the middle I think the Area is where
- 27:57word for chit the shoulders start kinda blog.
- 28:02What one of my questions for you was?
- 28:03When does Red Dwarf jump the shark?
- 28:07Because I think, I think a lot of people would say that 126.
- 28:13Yep. Is Yo.
- 28:14Either solid or brilliant? Yep.
- 28:17I think for was your favorite season, isn't it?
- 28:20It is, yes. I think there's absolutely no
- 28:22different for every single episode.
- 28:24They're not even the wax world one.
- 28:26That's brilliant. Where we must getting Gandhi to
- 28:30do. Push-ups.
- 28:34Well, it's getting lynched. They do.
- 28:41Don't they all these important figures for history?
- 28:47Okay, now I'm talking about it is actually very funny, it's
- 28:50hilarious. If that's the worst episodes of
- 28:53that series, then you know, it's Better than some of the things
- 28:57that are going to come unfortunate because it is right
- 29:01after Series, 6, for me, where where it goes wrong because
- 29:05you're a couple things happen. The visitors, you're getting a
- 29:08HEPA series of your I-20. You know, you've got C was 1 in
- 29:1288. Seems to is also an 80 83, and
- 29:1580 94, 91, 5 and 92. You got six in 93 and then you
- 29:20hit a block beneath the series. 7 doesn't come out until 1997.
- 29:25Sounds like a four-year Gap. Between.
- 29:28Between I wonder you Doug Naylor for the he couldn't do it alone
- 29:32and some people would still say he couldn't do it alone.
- 29:35You know, given what came afterwards?
- 29:37Yeah, there's I mean there's unfortunate, there is a big drop
- 29:40in products at aware that split up in this between Robert and
- 29:44took me around the go off and do separate thing.
- 29:46They lose the audience, don't they?
- 29:47It goes on film goes on film. It's something very polished
- 29:51looking. Yes.
- 29:52I mean, this is, it's a bit of a victim of its own success.
- 29:56Now, you know, it's it's, you know, Series 5 is probably, I
- 30:00think Series 6 is got some elements which are questionable
- 30:03ethics setting. The whole thing on starbug and
- 30:06six is my favorite season. Yeah, I live in is a week.
- 30:09Note in six, I think I think the overall idea of six where they
- 30:13were trying to cut your head off, if that had been resolved
- 30:15at the end of 6 or the start 7 then maybe put it just having
- 30:20that sort of like series Arc, I think doesn't really work by all
- 30:24means, get off the ship. Can I very quickly just tell you
- 30:27A Tale of you for Out Series 6 on yes please.
- 30:29You know whilst the size not here obviously so I'll have to
- 30:32do it myself but I was so excited.
- 30:35I was at the just the perfect when was six out, Lonnie 33,
- 30:39make three tasks 13. Okay, so I'm primed for this
- 30:43sort of Best of Both Worlds, Cliff, Hanger ending, and
- 30:47there's rimmer, they're, you know, and they're all being
- 30:49murdered in starbug and he's got the gun and he shoots the time
- 30:53drive and the ship blows up. Well, I'll tell you what, I
- 30:56reenacted that scene in Mob. Bedroom.
- 30:58So many times, I was rumor going around with a gun going work,
- 31:02right? And what, how do we get out of
- 31:04this? Yeah, I absolutely was gagging
- 31:10for the next season. I remember feeling a palpable
- 31:13absence that are wasn't anymore for years after that.
- 31:16Yeah, and then it's like you see it comes back but it comes back
- 31:19like super polished. Like it's CGI effects again,
- 31:23which is One of the things that happens in series 5 is the
- 31:28blow-up Red Dwarf? Yes.
- 31:30It's, you've got that demons and angels episode.
- 31:32She's one that no one ever talks about where and that actually
- 31:35blew up Red Rover. Gets put back together, but
- 31:38they're physically blow up the model.
- 31:40So after that and they've got no more model to do any shots.
- 31:44So any shot after that, which is model work, is got to be done.
- 31:49You know, it's got to be stock footage.
- 31:51We and we which again kind of explains why in cu6.
- 31:55There is no red dwarf. It's just all and seven star
- 31:58book, but, you know, seven, it's it's more episodes of sort of
- 32:05Eight Episodes is the rather than just the six and it has got
- 32:09this film quality though, it hasn't it.
- 32:10It's it's weird for a show that was kind of, I don't think she
- 32:15thought that sometimes it was really created a mate, but it
- 32:17was kind of cheap and cheerful at it.
- 32:19It's badly. Salty afford a key characters.
- 32:22It suddenly look like a Hollywood clot Buster.
- 32:24You know what? You need a second opinion.
- 32:27Yeah, it's yeah. It is, it's, it's, it's not Star
- 32:31Trek. That's the thing.
- 32:32It's, it's the underbelly of sci-fi isn't it?
- 32:35Is knows this isn't, you know, the top-of-the-range ship.
- 32:37This is a this is a butter, the world motor rather than a, you
- 32:42know, record running around in these rules, Royce Fuller, the
- 32:45cream of the cream. And this is Starbuck works so
- 32:48well. Is like a terrible old
- 32:50Volkswagen Beetles from spikes. Wasn't exactly.
- 32:54Exactly. And so your scrapping that
- 32:57you've got rid of the studio audience, or it's a bit like,
- 33:00okay, you know, and you will see in the performances because they
- 33:04play to the idiots in 16, you know, they know when I laugh
- 33:08hits, they'll wait. Yep.
- 33:10As our audience is peripatetic, you know, actually, and then
- 33:14obviously Rim has gone as well. Yes.
- 33:17Yes. Oh hello.
- 33:19But yeah, but you know what? He's noticeable and the bring
- 33:22and bring back a chance key but it's a different kitchen.
- 33:25Ski you be careful. There are by our off be coming
- 33:28after you a laughs. Chloe, they're not have
- 33:31absolutely nothing against Chloe.
- 33:32And I think ruin that comes in and gives a performance and, you
- 33:36know, in The Following Season as well, you know, she does
- 33:39fantastically well with what she's given But ultimately, it's
- 33:42not the same character, it's not the kochanski that we've had in
- 33:45the first A few, I don't know if if Claire Grogan just wasn't
- 33:50available or didn't want to do it or what, but, you know,
- 33:53bringing in a different actress, then having them play a
- 33:57different character, as well, you know, someone being like,
- 34:00there's like, the line is and they bring in a lot of very
- 34:04bizarre, sort of woman comedy in that season like, the whole
- 34:09thing of have a fantastic period of things like that.
- 34:12And I'm like, this is a bit awkward to, you know?
- 34:14Yeah. When it was just all the blocks
- 34:16together, You could get away with this sharply, you know.
- 34:18Exactly. And so, you know, this is where
- 34:20the see it hits the skids, you know, you're going to then, you
- 34:24know, you have another Cliffhanger Susie.
- 34:27It is a much more return to form.
- 34:30Well, I think that the reaction 27 was so traumatic.
- 34:33They were like, no, we need to bring back the studio audience,
- 34:35we need to tone this down. We need to get back to character
- 34:37drama. Yeah, but they still want to do
- 34:40it on a big scale. They still here, big effects
- 34:42sequences, and set pieces and things like that.
- 34:45Again, it doesn't. Always work because the kind of
- 34:48go too far on real going to bring back rimmer but we're
- 34:51going to do bring back the captain and the rest of the ship
- 34:54will bring back Red. Dwarf will bring back old, Holly
- 34:57will bring back rimmer but then the go to Father just bring
- 34:59everyone back. So now you've gone from this
- 35:02sort of like, you know, Odd Couple scenario where it's just
- 35:06the two of them. And the trying to figure out how
- 35:09the not going to just tell each other what.
- 35:11Then you've got this whole ensemble cast and again it just
- 35:15there's good points to it, there's good.
- 35:16They're absolutely races. Like Sandra, I think is a
- 35:19brilliant episode in seriously. Yeah, but as what, I think the
- 35:22biggest problem is the ultimate problem.
- 35:25Post Series 6 is, it's just not as funny.
- 35:29Yeah. I'm not saying I'm not saying.
- 35:32What's the fellows name is? Doug Naylor and Rob Grant.
- 35:35I'm not saying rob Grant brought all the humor in those early
- 35:37scenes but they're the two of them together.
- 35:40They seem to just have this beautiful mix of high concept
- 35:43ideas and genuinely funny joke. Oakes.
- 35:46Yeah, absence of something is missing after six, it take,
- 35:50Bobby. Okay.
- 35:50Without Dave, Martin isn't it? It's it's good but it's just not
- 35:53quite as good as theirs. What was that people do?
- 35:56You know, it's not even like red wolf can sustain change because
- 36:01I think even in 126 you have one and two which is like the sitcom
- 36:05period. Yeah.
- 36:06Then you have 3 to 5 which is like all like crazy high concept
- 36:12ideas backwards and things like that.
- 36:13The Inquisitor polymorph, you know, big bigger.
- 36:16Ideas, very, very funny ideas and then you've got six which is
- 36:20all kind of starbug contained, isn't it?
- 36:22And yeah, and they're doing a lot of character work there.
- 36:24So this the series is going through, like, that's the
- 36:27challenge and is evolving and what you see later on when it
- 36:31goes to div. Because, obviously, after to use
- 36:34it, you know, these changes in 2008 which are not nearly as
- 36:38successful and popular, as they would like, the wheels come off
- 36:42the BBC box out. And it's Dave, All UK TV that
- 36:47pick it up and start producing it in there, Get Back to Basics.
- 36:51I think it's a lot more successful actually.
- 36:53It's not as successful, but I think they hit rate is a lot
- 36:57better. It's not as good as it was.
- 37:00I mean, the dear viewers aren't as laugh out loud.
- 37:03You know, the not as memorable. It's not, you know, it doesn't,
- 37:07you know, draw me in as much as this one, a six.
- 37:12So when I do my five favorite episodes, you know, those are
- 37:14all going to be fun. Um, want to 6, because that's
- 37:17where my heart is, this that's fair, but there's there is a
- 37:20few, like, I think so, or not. Is it lemons, the one with
- 37:23Jesus? That is very, but yeah, it goes
- 37:26out Jesus Christ and he goes yes, I mean, Captain bollocks is
- 37:32an aside one. There's a one with all the
- 37:34different rivers and there's this 3D printer.
- 37:37That's yeah, it's out. This horribly ghoulish.
- 37:41Mutated hundred rimmer's coming down the corridor as I mean,
- 37:45there's some there's some big ideas and I think the show at
- 37:48this point is really selling itself on the chemistry of
- 37:50delicious they're sort of group chemistry.
- 37:53But it's it's it kind of it does that whole Star Trek to thing
- 37:57where, you know, it realizes actually these characters, these
- 38:01actors aren't The kids anymore, you know, they aren't ya.
- 38:06You know, you have like the motion Star Trek, the motion
- 38:08picture, which is, you know, you've got visibly agent.
- 38:12Bill Shatner trying to be, is that he was when you first
- 38:17started you know and it's not until to whether I should go.
- 38:20Yeah, this Camp has all know since the glasses on her over
- 38:23and he's like, yeah, you know, I'm not like I used to be but
- 38:27let's make the most of that. Let's You know, have the coat
- 38:32that you didn't, that's, you know, make the character older
- 38:36and wiser, and more experienced it, because that's what B Khan
- 38:40in the end. Isn't it Cooks experience over
- 38:43over Khan and You'll do the same with with the last, you know,
- 38:49few series of Red Dwarf in order that the drugs are more around
- 38:52middle-aged and you know, thinning hair and whatnot.
- 38:55So that I couldn't shipping. Life could contribute to the
- 38:58fact that people say it's past its prime just because they are
- 39:03a little bit past their Prime. Now, it's, you know, not not, I
- 39:06think the legacy of the writing is, is always the key to this,
- 39:10you know, a sitcom. You can have the best actors in
- 39:13the world either we're starting with you haven't.
- 39:15Got the gags, you're not, you know, that accident that it's
- 39:18the guy great, more than anything that that lets the
- 39:22later series down for me where as you know, when we come to
- 39:25talk about something like series for its just hit after hit after
- 39:28hit after hit. Okay.
- 39:31Well then I'm going to circle you around them back to Red
- 39:33Dwarf at its prime because I think it would be a shame to
- 39:38focus too much on where things went wrong or went downhill a
- 39:43little bit and obviously you're focusing.
- 39:45Five episodes on you know, red Rolfe when it was at its
- 39:49apotheosis. So I want to ask you then to
- 39:54choose one episode from each season.
- 39:57Not necessarily episode. We're going to talk about which
- 40:01exemplifies 126 at their best. I am Okay.
- 40:07Louise. Why series 1?
- 40:11I think I like future Echoes second one.
- 40:14I think that's again. It's got like a really good
- 40:17sound idea behind there. It's a funny one because the
- 40:20book really explains why you know, the see in future Echoes
- 40:25why you know and certainly in the book it's explained that as
- 40:29soon as the reactor blew Holly just set off out the solar
- 40:33system as quick as possible in the shift just accelerates.
- 40:36And second the accelerator three million years until I get to the
- 40:39point where it's traveling faster than the speed of light.
- 40:41Oh, that's clever which isn't really explained in the, in the
- 40:46TV episode, you've got a have that background from the book to
- 40:49appreciate but it's you know what though there's a genuine
- 40:52sequence in that where he says oh I've seen you die.
- 40:56Yeah and it all plays out with Lister desperately trying to
- 41:00prevent that from happening but still having to do what he's got
- 41:02to do with the drive console. Yeah it is.
- 41:04And that was the point. I was like, yeah, this is Just
- 41:07funny. This is draw boxes.
- 41:08Clever. Yeah, you've got the drama.
- 41:11You've got the the Sci-Fi Concept in.
- 41:13You've got the last as well, like the bit where Holly gives
- 41:17remember beehive. I look like Helen Shapiro.
- 41:28Yes. So you know there's lots of
- 41:31laughs, there's lots of good ideas and there's lots of but
- 41:34you see drama in that one. For series 2.
- 41:40And I think I would pick off, you know, because, you know,
- 41:46there's two, isn't it? Oh, I think sorry, I'm taking
- 41:48over now, but better than life better than life.
- 41:52Just sounds. It's like, you know, it's
- 41:55virtual reality before virtual don't really was really a proper
- 41:58thing. You know, that's and again
- 42:02that's you can see. This is the point where they
- 42:04would need to get off this ship would need to find ways of
- 42:07getting more characters involved.
- 42:09You have like, stasis, leak, mesothelioma need more coat as
- 42:12well. Go back in time.
- 42:13That's a really funny one, as well.
- 42:14Yeah. Of the point where all the
- 42:16characters, there's like three versions of every cat.
- 42:18I'm the rimmer who's with the list of who's with it, and it's
- 42:23just that lovely scene with him and the captain ways like, you
- 42:26know, describing list, uh, feed them the magic mushrooms and
- 42:32I'll get to the point also. Yes, but where did Captain
- 42:36Hollister toes up in the chicken costume?
- 42:38Everybody thinks he's still high but it's got that.
- 42:42I am not little bit where the go through the steer.
- 42:44Sit in the café. What is it, is it?
- 42:45Yeah, its its Singularity is a potent.
- 42:49What is it? It's you know, it's this booth
- 42:51freezer sounds like it's a Magic Door.
- 42:56Oh, why didn't you say? Three then is oh boy this is
- 43:04tough. Yeah again I think I'll try not
- 43:09trying to avoid once I'm actually going to pick as well.
- 43:11So on top of big up a few other ones and I like backwards.
- 43:15I think that's a really good open to the series because again
- 43:18with there's a jump in person has change in personality, but
- 43:22creating company. But the new Holley coming in and
- 43:25I think it's really good to get to the half Creighton having
- 43:29these driving Can shoot dramatic.
- 43:33Look at it the really, really high high sci-fi concept,
- 43:36getting them off the ship and I think that's the point where
- 43:39they realize what they can do visually as well.
- 43:41Yeah, yeah. I've got like new costumes that
- 43:43got new new the but star book and it's a good you know we've
- 43:48introduced in starbug and new Holley and that's all backwards
- 43:52a show that has the most disgusting visual sequence I can
- 43:56ever remember watching as a child and that is the woman on
- 43:59eating that chocolate. We're all right, so, it's vile.
- 44:04And for all talked about the wax one of it were Aw.
- 44:10It's got It's So Good. See every every episode seems
- 44:14for Scott cement love about like Camille.
- 44:16Where is like let's just try to treat straightener to lie, you
- 44:23get the oldest me fact that I don't even disguise of that
- 44:27monster. He's so shit as well.
- 44:31I think they mentioned jump as well stands out because you've
- 44:33got like the rumor that isn't the It's also the one that's
- 44:40actually made some guy out of his life.
- 44:42And again that's just rude to just catch.
- 44:44Resin is what a guy Smokey week is extraordinary, isn't it?
- 44:49It gives Chris Perry like the opportunity to do do something
- 44:52else or it stopped by the trying to sneak off and drama right?
- 44:57We had to do an acting project. Yeah I haven't I've still got a
- 45:01recording of a bunch of us. It's on a cassette that I've got
- 45:04because they're player anymore. We had the script book read off
- 45:08and diamond. And jump was in there and we
- 45:10read out the entirety of Dimension job and asking tell
- 45:13you. Now, you definitely need
- 45:15skillful actors because it was so fucking painfully.
- 45:17Unfunny our version is a great script.
- 45:21Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 45:22Series 5. That's a strong air again.
- 45:29Yeah. Yeah we did is really as you
- 45:31said about demons and angels, why'd you say no one talks about
- 45:33that. It's just the other ones are
- 45:35more popular. I know you've got you've got the
- 45:37hollow ship. One you've got back to reality
- 45:40obviously between W. So everyone you think she was
- 45:42five? I think.
- 45:43Yeah, I got the telephone which I really love are played that
- 45:48one to death without the repeated, I'm going to take off
- 45:51the table because you couldn't go to a website and watch that
- 45:52one if there. Because then again that's I just
- 45:54love that the pit with a claw hand where it claims that he's
- 45:57Says, and he's like, yeah, there's something on my leg is
- 46:02stuck. You haven't seen the size of it.
- 46:08People just love. I love element or that's
- 46:12probably going to be one. He picks to be honest.
- 46:14Is that the season with sexy Jane Horrocks in it?
- 46:16Yes. Oh man, she's gone.
- 46:19Doesn't she say? Yes, I thought'd we would go and
- 46:22have sex this afternoon. It's got him.
- 46:27Who's the other guy that comes from the ship?
- 46:29And oh, I meant. Yeah, I know.
- 46:33I don't actually really he's well known as well.
- 46:36Yeah. If that they do in size later
- 46:39Seasons, they do have a habit of bringing in some pretty strong,
- 46:42a thumbs-up, and Timothy spores in blackjack back to reality,
- 46:45isn't it? Yeah.
- 46:48Oh, can I just get one line C please?
- 46:49I'm so sorry. You know, I've got to do this
- 46:52but rumors lied in demons and angels.
- 46:54What was that? I'm going to whip you.
- 46:57You to an inch of your life and then I'm going to have you do
- 47:02it, stop it. Oh my God, the really inch of
- 47:11humor in it. Also because you've got like
- 47:14seems like that which I'll just get the left just for being old
- 47:17of the up. You've got like the one-liners
- 47:19that your whole ship but they'd so they've taken mr.
- 47:21Rimmer, they've taken mr. Rimmer quick.
- 47:23Let's go up before the bring them back.
- 47:26I love that. In fact they do act so several
- 47:28times. My favorite ever is was it
- 47:32switch switch from Red Alert that blue and lots of Red Alert.
- 47:35Are you sure? Sir.
- 47:36It does mean changing the bulb? It's correct that it's six
- 47:42attention to how cheap the showing.
- 47:44Huh. Often us genius?
- 47:46It's brilliant. We pick the six would be Legion
- 47:50because I just, I love again talking about different types of
- 47:53Comedy. You've got that slapstick where
- 47:56they're all trying to knock River and the try need the food
- 47:59with the Chopsticks and, you know, it's just so in that is
- 48:03pure Force, isn't it? Absolutely fine for the and
- 48:05yeah, I'll look, how's that fellow played Legion was a
- 48:08serious classical actor and he was in that costume.
- 48:11Try to give a really serious performance.
- 48:15Yeah. Okay, not that one.
- 48:17But he didn't want to do is really clever because obviously
- 48:20got rimmer who is Holograms, who can't do anything.
- 48:23And again woman, that's a bit will turn me into a hard light
- 48:28hologram where you can actually touch things and it's also again
- 48:31like the new Ed. Good Sci-Fi concept coming in
- 48:34there or La mention, two more. Yeah, marooned from series free,
- 48:41which I think is the best character drawbar they did in
- 48:45the entire rather. That's basically just My list
- 48:48are stuck on a planet telling stories to each other.
- 48:52And boy, is so funny. He's was it, your guitar was
- 48:56made of camphor wood and he's burning his bloody box.
- 49:01Yes. Excellent.
- 49:02But also thanks for the memory as well which I think is one of
- 49:06the best plotted scripts they did.
- 49:10It's that it's a sort of jigsaw puzzle that you put together and
- 49:13it doesn't all come together until the very last shot and
- 49:17have you. You ever actually had a triple
- 49:19fried egg sandwich with chili sauce and Chutney.
- 49:22I feel like I'm having a baby is high.
- 49:31Anyway that's all right I'll give you my five picks then go
- 49:36on in since we've been talking all about swords, I'll give you
- 49:39the five that I have picked, which I'm going to say now will
- 49:43probably change, but it's really difficult just to get five is
- 49:47the first thing. Say, because let's say
- 49:50everything was talk about you. What could do those episodes?
- 49:52And, you know, tottentot top because the saw so good.
- 49:56It was really difficult to not just pick all of series for
- 50:01because again, absolutely fantastic.
- 50:03But what I'm going to pick is I want to pick terraformed from
- 50:07Series 5 because like I said, that was, that was one of the
- 50:11ones that really got me into it and it's just every scene is
- 50:16just a banger. In that single from it.
- 50:19My concept that's yeah study that's a good one.
- 50:24I'm going to talk about the end which is the very first one
- 50:29because I think that though the series one is it's very raw and
- 50:35wealth and finding its feet. You know, even in that episode,
- 50:38you can see the beginnings of. If really, something, really
- 50:42special praise, I'll be. I've been eating the crew.
- 50:48You trying to tell me you everybody's dead.
- 50:51Everybody is dead. Dave and queeg.
- 50:56We're gonna go with Craig gold and because again, it's just,
- 51:01you know, you've got a, you've got with my enormous, love it.
- 51:05That's, that's a really strong episode for him.
- 51:07And I'm going to go with polymorph.
- 51:11The secrets of the box of shows that you are you sure?
- 51:15Yes. Betty.
- 51:18Spaghetti. Honestly, your have anything.
- 51:22Would you list are again just so many good Concepts.
- 51:28And you know, the give the Casimir new to do with the
- 51:33characters which is, which is fantastic.
- 51:35Every last one is going to be probably my favorite all-time
- 51:39episode of Red Dwarf ever. So, what is it?
- 51:46It's a white hole that you're favoring.
- 51:53Yeah, again it's just It's one where every scene is just full
- 51:59of laughs and you're full of great ideas.
- 52:01I mean, paint playing pool with planets.
- 52:03Oh, hi guys is brilliant. It's just, you know, and you've
- 52:08got everything leading up to that of sort of like Holly and
- 52:11talk is toaster coming in. And yes just you know I use all
- 52:17the time. I'll go was it given that the
- 52:19universe is also infinite? Would you like a double cheese
- 52:24waffle? Not just ready.
- 52:28It's a bit currently as well. Those are absolutely brilliant.
- 52:34Brilliant choices I will obviously go into why you chose
- 52:38her nose in a lot more depth when we do the commentaries.
- 52:40So to sort of round this off then and bring this to a close
- 52:45how how would you describe red dwarf?
- 52:51Like, what are your feelings about red dwarf and how would
- 52:55you summarize them, summarize? It, it's It's it's, it's hard to
- 53:01summarize, it's in just one sense, but if they want to be
- 53:03like BBC, those Star Trek, but realizes that on a shoestring
- 53:08see, can't do Star Trek with the budget, submix it funny.
- 53:12Instead bbcgirls. Yeah, we're never going to much.
- 53:15That's a let's just - comedy and and that's where it succeeds is.
- 53:21How sort of no one is of its limitations and rather than
- 53:24trying to be, you know, the oval, for example.
- 53:28Oh, and where they have got, all the money.
- 53:29It is just down and dirty and it's the it's the losers, isn't
- 53:33it? The losers.
- 53:35I'll get ya a moment. Okay.
- 53:37Cheer for the underdog, Joe Patrick to it.
- 53:39You talk about Star Trek on a budget.
- 53:42Patrick Stewart, has a wonderful story about because he directed
- 53:45an episode of nation duration called A Fistful of datas, which
- 53:48is a Western and he was watching dumb and for the apocalypse and
- 53:52it shot it. I mean, obviously, so in a muddy
- 53:55field in Governor apocalypse, but if sign a very Going to Y
- 53:58and he's watching this sci-fi comedy.
- 54:00Western I'm going. This is very like the episode, I
- 54:03think watched it for a little bit.
- 54:05He literally says he picked up the phone to call his lawyer
- 54:09because he thought that they had watched it and then whilst he
- 54:12was waiting on the phone. He laughed, like he laughed at
- 54:15one of the jokes and then he laughed again.
- 54:18And then he put the phone down and he just ate that he fell in
- 54:22love with the show from that point on.
- 54:24Yeah, it means if we're doing six than gold, mine of the Lips
- 54:28would be, would be the second one.
- 54:30That's just again, the three of you had a kid.
- 54:33Oh, and later can decide. But, yeah, just real real
- 54:46sci-fi, it's got like a real and relatable feel do it more than
- 54:52anything else. It's just so, bloody funny,
- 54:57Well, I think we should end it there.
- 54:59What a great note to end this on and let me just say I cannot
- 55:03wait to do this episode off it. We're gonna laugh our heads off
- 55:06what probably quote away from most of it is deaf.
- 55:10Well, let's do it.
