Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to a bonus episode of the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 0:03On these bonus episodes, I like to do a book review.
- 0:06And for any book that I give a positive rating for, you will find an affiliate
- 0:10link down below in the show notes to purchase the book.
- 0:13But of course, you can always go to your local library and check it out there.
- 0:16I'm a big fan of the library and all that you can learn through there.
- 0:20The book review I have for you today is a delightful tiny little little book.
- 0:24It is, when I say tiny, it's small.
- 0:27It's only seven and a half inches by six inches. Like it's small.
- 0:31It's small enough to fit in your bag or wherever you are on the go, or just keep with you.
- 0:37It is called The Self-Care Devotional.
- 0:40And the subtitle is 180 Days of Calming Comfort from God's Word.
- 0:45I really like this book. And it is not specifically about health.
- 0:49It's not going to talk to you about Hashimoto's. It's not going to talk to you
- 0:52about autoimmune health.
- 0:53It's not really going to talk to you about health at all. But as you know,
- 0:57from listening to this podcast for, you know, many episodes,
- 1:00you are a whole person, body, mind, spirit, diet, environment,
- 1:04and each one of those aspects of you impacts the whole.
- 1:08And that's why this book is such a great little tool for your overall holistic health toolbox.
- 1:15I'm going to read to you a little bit from the introduction so you can see how
- 1:18this book also looks at the whole and will help you in It says this.
- 1:51You is essential so you can love others well.
- 1:55Perfection isn't the goal, but living with passion and purpose is.
- 1:59Let God speak to you through the pages of this book, helping you find the right
- 2:03balance in every area of your life.
- 2:05Let Him help you prioritize each day so you're set up for His rich blessings.
- 2:11Invite Him into your plans and ideas, expectant for the Lord's goodness to strengthen
- 2:15you for what's ahead, and then watch as you find joy, rest, and peace in His presence.
- 2:21Trusting God in these ways will provide a much-needed stability to your body, soul, and mind.
- 2:28Friend, there is no earthly self-care routine that comes close to a God-care reality.
- 2:34Isn't that just a beautiful introduction? And the book itself is beautiful too.
- 2:39It's got little plant artwork.
- 2:40And although I am not a fantastic plant mom, I do love seeing plants like growing,
- 2:47thriving, and I don't know, there's just something beautiful about it.
- 2:51So I really enjoyed this book.
- 2:53Every single page is one day. And like I said, it's a short or it's a small book.
- 2:59So you know know that each page is not going to take you very long. Each day's reading.
- 3:04Each day has a title, of course.
- 3:07It has a Bible verse, a short little devotional or thought about it, and then a prayer.
- 3:12Now, I like written prayers sometimes because I feel like I kind of get stuck in a rut.
- 3:18Sometimes I'm talking to God about everything and anything, and other times I'm stuck in a rut.
- 3:23And I like to to have a written prayer to go off of.
- 3:26Whether I internalize it and actually pray it or not, I find that I really like them.
- 3:32So I recommend this book. Let me give you an example of one of my favorite days.
- 3:37And the day I chose, it's about rest and trust.
- 3:40But there's a lot of topics covered. Like day one is reasons to care about yourself.
- 3:45Another one is how to pray instead of worry.
- 3:48Another is your thoughts matter. I talk about that a lot here at home,
- 3:54on the road with my kids. I talk about it some on the podcast.
- 3:58Another day called the antidote to discouragement. And sometimes we really need
- 4:02that, especially in February.
- 4:04It is, I know it's not the darkest month, right around, you know,
- 4:07December 21st. That's the darkest time.
- 4:09But by February, I feel like like that darkness of winter is just catching up
- 4:15to us and we're so ready for spring.
- 4:16So I feel like that chapter, it's page 26.
- 4:20It's a great fit for mid-February. And if you get the book right when it comes
- 4:25out at the beginning of February, you're going to be ready for that antidote to discouragement.
- 4:30Here's my favorite page. It's my favorite one because when we have an autoimmune
- 4:35problem, we need to focus on rest.
- 4:38We need to let our bodies heal. We need to let our immune systems get back online.
- 4:44And one of the ways that we can facilitate that is by lowering our stress,
- 4:49increasing our rest, and knowing that we can trust in something greater than us.
- 4:54And that is God. So here is the example. It's called Rest and Truly Trust.
- 5:01It is on page 182, so it's way towards the end.
- 5:05The Bible passage is from a translation I have never heard of.
- 5:10I don't know anything about this translation.
- 5:12It definitely sounds more like a paraphrase translation to me,
- 5:16but it is Psalm 28, verse 7 from The Voice translation. And it says this.
- 5:33Then the devotional reads like this, Too often, our hearts grow weary and our
- 5:40bones get tired because we rely on ourselves too much.
- 5:44While we're extraordinary women capable of conquering many giants,
- 5:48we are severely limited by our human condition.
- 5:51And each time we decide to play God in our lives, we are eventually left lacking and exhausted.
- 5:56We aren't designed to navigate this life without the Lord's presence.
- 6:01Scripture tells us that God is our source. No matter what we need,
- 6:05He is our divine supplier, liar, a promise God takes very seriously.
- 6:09Be it strength, wisdom, hope, peace, joy, perspective, or guidance,
- 6:15when we choose to rest in Him and trust His love, help will arrive.
- 6:19We can lift our voice in praise for His goodness because when we ask,
- 6:24He will restore our balance and set us on a healthy path forward.
- 6:28And then it closes with this prayer. Dear God, help me to choose rest and truly
- 6:33trust in you to be my source of all good things.
- 6:36I know that when I do, help will come. Thank you for loving me so well. Amen.
- 6:41Now I want to add a caveat, and I've talked about this in other book reviews.
- 6:45I am not a prosperity person.
- 6:49There is a whole, I would say, like non-biblical branch of the Christian movement.
- 6:58And they teach that if you do the right things, good things will happen. And that is not true.
- 7:05I do not believe that there is like a magical prayer that you can say and God
- 7:09will say, oh, she said the right words. So here's the answer.
- 7:12Like God is not a genie in a bottle.
- 7:15I don't believe that we can say the right things and, you know,
- 7:21health and help will come.
- 7:22But God God promises that He is our help in times of trouble and He will deliver us.
- 7:28Deliverance just doesn't always look like we expect.
- 7:31When you go through this book, which I highly recommend that you do,
- 7:34I am not guaranteeing that you're going to see, you know, the exact changes
- 7:39in your health and in your life because that's not what we're promised.
- 7:44But what we are promised is that we can rest in God. We can abide in Him.
- 7:49He is our help. help. He is our source of help when we are in trouble.
- 7:55And a lot of times we need to be reminded of that. So I do recommend the self-care
- 8:00devotional. It's just a tiny little book. You can fit it in your bag.
- 8:03You can put it on your bed stand, on your nightside stand. You can put it on the back of your toilet.
- 8:08That is a place, now that we have phones, I don't read as much like a real book.
- 8:13But man, when I was growing up, we always had a book or two on the back of the
- 8:17toilet it because you needed something to do while you were in there,
- 8:20this would be a great thing for a daily reading spot, wherever that is.
- 8:25If it's in your bag while you are, you know, on your out and about,
- 8:29or whether it's by your bed, or whether it's in the bathroom,
- 8:33or whether you give this as a gift, The Self-Care Devotional is a great little book.
- 8:38It is available for pre-order right now wherever you order books,
- 8:42and it comes out, you can have your copy in your hands late next next week, beginning of February.
- 8:48So whenever you listen to this podcast episode, I hope you will check it out
