Latest / This is Not Art Therapy (The Podcast) / Episode 2: Rest/Relaxation/Recharging
Transcript
- 0:06Hi, John. Hey, hey, Linnea. We're going to quickly
- 0:10go over the art invitations, then we'll get into
- 0:13the more nitty gritty fun chit chat stuff. So
- 0:17today's theme is our three R's and I'm going
- 0:20to remember that they're rest, relaxation and
- 0:23recharging. And we're going to talk a little
- 0:25bit about how they're different and probably
- 0:27some other stuff. So the first invitation is
- 0:31basically a map. of what rest, relaxation, and
- 0:39recharging could look like. I kind of think of
- 0:41this island and there's different paths to it
- 0:43and different physical spaces that exist in this.
- 0:47So what would that look like? And also more importantly,
- 0:50how do we get there? The second one is to make
- 0:53a permission slip for rest, to either invite
- 0:57yourself to rest or just ensure that you can
- 1:01make space to rest in your life. And the third
- 1:04one is to make a rested, recharged and relaxed
- 1:09self -portrait. Think about how that might make
- 1:12you feel or what that person could look like
- 1:15if all three of those can kind of perfectly align.
- 1:19So if you want to make art along, you're more
- 1:22than welcome to because that's really the fun
- 1:26part of life is to make art about it, right?
- 1:28Yeah, it's a great part of a podcast. You can
- 1:30listen to one thing and... do another at the
- 1:33same time so yeah if you want to do a self -portrait
- 1:36let's start about yeah john and i also made some
- 1:41art from last week's vibe check session and we've
- 1:47also already shown these images to one another
- 1:49so john do you want to talk about what you made
- 1:52from last week yeah so i ended up making uh an
- 1:56artist id is um so basically just says artist
- 1:59id it says my name underneath it finished projects
- 2:03because I'm relatively new to art so the number
- 2:07I got and I'm not kidding you was 68 okay so
- 2:12it's so close to like the perfect number of 69
- 2:14of just being such a stoner I have a question
- 2:17yeah go for it that means that the one you're
- 2:22making now would be the 69th piece no I know
- 2:26it's painful. It's 69. It's 69 on the dot. This
- 2:30one counts. It's 68. The next one will be 69.
- 2:34So I don't know what I'm going to throw under
- 2:36there. I put what school I went to because a
- 2:39lot of you guys are art listeners. So I'm imagining
- 2:41you went to some sort of school or like who taught
- 2:44you. I, I spelt school wrong because I'm dyslexic.
- 2:49And then I wrote none. And then I put for a,
- 2:53for style. uh god i don't want to come off super
- 2:57pretentious i was like just my own because i've
- 3:00been learning on a couch by myself so yeah that
- 3:03was what i did for my art my my template and
- 3:07if you guys want to expand on your template go
- 3:09for it but that's just sort of the baseline yeah
- 3:12oh i love why did you think that would make you
- 3:15sound pretentious if you said just your own do
- 3:18you remember that guy you told me about who was
- 3:19like my 11th instrument is my voice i think so
- 3:23yeah like that's how i i wrote i was writing
- 3:28that down and i just was like oh as i wrote that
- 3:31i was like my own style as in yeah i guess it
- 3:34is just very weird it's a it's a weird shaky
- 3:37i have so i have slight tremors um and i don't
- 3:41exactly know where or when they came in but uh
- 3:44of my life but it's basically been the last couple
- 3:48years i've noticed them a little bit more But
- 3:52that's kind of put this weird sort of shake into
- 3:55my lines when I draw something. Whereas like
- 3:58I was obsessed with doing something straight
- 4:00at first and then eventually just kind of just
- 4:03I learned to just go with it. And yeah, that's
- 4:06why I have these weird, crooked, shaky little
- 4:08lines. But it's highly stylized and it's hard
- 4:11to put you in a box, I guess. I know there's
- 4:15probably some artists out there who would be
- 4:16like, oh, it's this with a little bit of influence
- 4:18of this. But it's just so. very organically you
- 4:22and yeah it really it's been cool to kind of
- 4:27watch all these characters come to life and how
- 4:30the images evolve too because sometimes at one
- 4:33point you showed me a drawing of this man I think
- 4:37his name ended up being Doug and then you ended
- 4:39up adding a whole bunch of words to it with some
- 4:41stories oh yeah yeah yeah no they evolve yeah
- 4:46especially if you go back they evolved a little
- 4:49bit more The point of me putting a number for
- 4:52you guys and you guys put your number would basically
- 4:54be to maybe, if you can, go back and look at
- 4:58your first drawing compared to what you're doing
- 4:59now. And yeah, just starting from where you started
- 5:03to where you are now. In my studio, my work studio,
- 5:07I guess, I have some images that I made when
- 5:11I was like maybe three or four. And it's so cool
- 5:15because I have this tendency either when I'm
- 5:18more, it shows up more in my graphic design work,
- 5:21but looking around at my art, I can also see
- 5:23like, oh yeah, it comes up in other places where
- 5:25I have a tendency to just want to put borders
- 5:27on things. And I think in the form of containment,
- 5:31but in this three -year -old drawing I did, I
- 5:34did the exact same thing. I put an outline on
- 5:37my page. And I thought it was so cool that at
- 5:40this tender age, I still have these themes that
- 5:45I still use 30 years later. Yeah. You are who
- 5:49you are. Yeah. Yeah. You started as an artist
- 5:52at three. Most kids make art at a young age.
- 5:58I don't think I did, though. I was so far away
- 6:01from that. Like so far removed. Yeah. It's like
- 6:03being dyslexic and being like just not liking
- 6:06pen and paper. I was. I basically just avoided
- 6:09it I know my art teachers must have hated me
- 6:12it's not for everyone I think of like arts for
- 6:14everyone but also if it's not for you then don't
- 6:17do it I guess yeah it's just if you're in the
- 6:20right time or space for it right yeah that's
- 6:23a good way I also did the make your id and I
- 6:28had made some of it last week and then because
- 6:31I used a lot of glue and paper I had to smush
- 6:33it in a book but I forgot which book I put it
- 6:36in. So I technically lost my ID. And I was like,
- 6:38that's such a classic thing to do that I've already
- 6:41lost my ID and it's not even done being made.
- 6:45And then I found it and I kept working on it.
- 6:47And not only did I do the artist ID, but I also
- 6:51included that, I can't remember what the art
- 6:54directive was. It was something about duality,
- 6:55opposing forces. I should have looked that up,
- 6:58but whatever. So I have a little bit of that,
- 7:00but that also is one of those images that comes
- 7:02up a lot for me. And mine is all collage. I have
- 7:06a little gargoyle as what could kind of be considered
- 7:09the little image. There's no words other than
- 7:13it says, take your best shot for enduring love.
- 7:17And it's made out of different colors and it's
- 7:20all magazine images and the water and the fire
- 7:23are hand drawn. kind of see I like that I do
- 7:28yeah I can see that it's wicked include them
- 7:30on and also there's parts that are kind of coming
- 7:32out oh and at the back I forgot the back is my
- 7:34favorite part it says always an artist and I
- 7:37gave my space myself space to write more but
- 7:39I don't really know if I want to add anything
- 7:41no that's perfect what else do I write sometimes
- 7:45sometimes less is more yeah exactly so We're
- 7:50talking about rest, relaxation and recharging.
- 7:54When you hear those three words, how do you differentiate
- 7:58them? Or like, how are they different for you?
- 8:01And how are they maybe the same for you too?
- 8:03Because things can be two things. Yeah, I think
- 8:06rest is always your number one. So most of my
- 8:11life I've had pretty physical jobs. So just resting
- 8:14is the number one. Just sleep, sleep. Get your
- 8:17eight hours of sleep if you can. if you're, you
- 8:20know, you're working your night shifts or whatnot,
- 8:23you're basically like, okay, I'm going to sleep.
- 8:26And that's good. It does help you kind of, you
- 8:29know, reset the, reset the scale and recharge.
- 8:32But I think the original one is to start and
- 8:37basically get that sleep and rest. So, or just
- 8:40lie down if you can and rest and relax in a certain
- 8:43environment. Right. And for the other ones, I
- 8:48guess, so rest. relaxation is like when you have
- 8:52like the luxury of like having a weekend so i
- 8:55would say it's like you can relax with just like
- 8:59doing something like trying to put yourself in
- 9:02a place where you're like no i'm actively trying
- 9:05to relax like that might mean i'm gonna do my
- 9:08morning routine so for if like my morning routine
- 9:12on a weekend would be to basically start off
- 9:15with trying to make a good breakfast black coffee
- 9:18and listening to a record i know i'm such a hipster
- 9:21as that slips out of my mouth and to recharge
- 9:25is basically i i would say getting the first
- 9:29two kind of gets me to recharge okay yeah oh
- 9:32the synergetic experience when if you get this
- 9:35plus this you make cookies or yes exactly so
- 9:39that that's my that's my version of the rest
- 9:42relaxation and recharging yeah i like how you
- 9:45express relaxation is like this longer drawn
- 9:49out experience because I think that's so important
- 9:52to take time off I don't know if that's something
- 9:58that's like privileged to say of make sure you
- 10:01have time to take off everybody's got schedules
- 10:03and it's just what time frame you're in I find
- 10:06so it's it might even be if you're you have shorter
- 10:11periods of time like your lunch break, whatever
- 10:14it is, you just go to your car and you're like,
- 10:16I don't like the people I'm working with. So
- 10:19I'm going to go to my car for 20 minutes and
- 10:22just unwind and just not be on my phone. I have
- 10:26just something, something different, you know?
- 10:28Yeah. I think that is something that's really
- 10:30helpful for me. Out of your routine, going into,
- 10:34you know, this other space to really. disconnect
- 10:39because it's hard sometimes when it's all kind
- 10:42of mushed together yeah or if I'm recharging
- 10:45can be something like might be a phone call like
- 10:48with there are people that I get phone calls
- 10:50with that after I'm done like maybe like 30 minutes
- 10:53an hour two hours whatever it is right like if
- 10:56you're just really into this conversation that
- 10:58recharges you or puts sets you in a different
- 11:00direction oh big time yeah I never really made
- 11:06the distinction between rest and recharging until
- 11:09someone explained to me that they're different
- 11:13and you need both of them. I had had two weeks
- 11:16off for the holidays and I spent most of the
- 11:20two weeks just melting into my bed and napping
- 11:24and watching silly videos online. And I felt
- 11:29good, but I didn't get... the experience of feeling
- 11:33recharged and until I had a small gathering of
- 11:36art therapists at my studio and we made art and
- 11:38talked and it was just so that's where I got
- 11:41the energy from. And I think I needed both, or
- 11:44maybe I'm just justifying having two very chill
- 11:48weeks back to back. Yeah. I felt the difference
- 11:52immediately. I was like, oh, yeah, you kind of
- 11:54need both. And you need to know when you need
- 11:56it and you need to get it where you can find
- 11:59it, too. Because, again, if you only have half
- 12:01an hour, an hour to chill in your car like you,
- 12:03that's. Yeah, it might just be that phone call.
- 12:08I think you're on to something when you're saying
- 12:09you had your artist friends there with you and
- 12:12you guys were all working together. So, you know,
- 12:15to have just people that are kind of on the same
- 12:17wavelength, that can be really refreshing. Yeah.
- 12:20I feel like you recently had one of those moments
- 12:23or maybe it was last night when you were showing
- 12:25me pictures of what you were doing. You had the
- 12:27biggest smile on your face. Oh, yeah. So, yeah,
- 12:31I was doing her with my buddy Kyle and my girlfriend.
- 12:34We we both I don't know. It was just it's just
- 12:37really nice to see people just kind of living
- 12:40in the moment. And just enjoying like self -portraits
- 12:44because we did our kind of assignments that we
- 12:47had last week. So we all did like either self
- 12:50-portraits or the IDs. Nobody got around to the
- 12:53opposites because I think that one is a little
- 12:56bit more technically hard. So if you're doing
- 12:58that one right now, good for you. But yeah, no,
- 13:03I think it was just people with no real big purpose
- 13:06or goal in mind, just being able to hang out.
- 13:08That was pretty much it. Yeah. I love art -based
- 13:13hangouts as a way to recharge because I think
- 13:17you named it. It's this like synergetic experience
- 13:19that happens when people collect and make art.
- 13:24Like when you're in a room when other people
- 13:25are making art, it's magical. Like you can feel
- 13:29the energy in the room. It's so inspiring. And
- 13:32it's something really nice. Like, so my. I recently
- 13:37had a surgery and I had a few friends come over
- 13:40and like they had seen I'd been doing stuff on
- 13:43Instagram because I just I post on there a lot
- 13:46with my pictures and they're like, we'd like
- 13:47to try. And honestly, two of them had never really
- 13:51drawn and they made some really funny stuff.
- 13:54So like some some what were they minotaurs? I
- 13:58think like what are the half human half horse
- 14:01people? Yeah. minotaurs yeah so like yeah they
- 14:04made these minotaurs uh and my other buddy was
- 14:06like making a whale or whatever we're just goofing
- 14:09around but a lot of it is just people talking
- 14:11back and forth and just trying to put in a little
- 14:13bit of input here not there but yeah it was it
- 14:16was really nice to see yeah i love when animals
- 14:19creatures characters come into our art and i
- 14:23feel like john that's maybe 90 of your art if
- 14:26not more like i could it's probably close to
- 14:29100 but i don't want to speak in 100s kind of
- 14:31thing yeah 95 but it's very people -centered
- 14:34oh yeah i'm i'm big on faces portraits i think
- 14:39that's just how i came off of when i would draw
- 14:41albums you would just get a lot of uh so like
- 14:44by drawing albums it's mostly faces And I found
- 14:47that was hard to do and people were kind of impressed
- 14:49by it. So I was like, Oh, I guess I'm getting
- 14:51that like dopamine hit when people are like,
- 14:53good job. You're like, Oh, thank you. So like,
- 14:55I keep trying to do that. And I think I've only
- 14:58made Frank once, but I made him half dog, half
- 15:01potato. And I do a lot of monkey men, which are
- 15:07like very much almost humans, but with more wrinkly
- 15:10faces. Okay. Yeah. I like that you're calling,
- 15:14yeah, you've given them names. Oh yeah. Tomo,
- 15:18Tomo the monkey. I did a whole little mini series
- 15:22arc about him and fighting aliens. So that was
- 15:26a pretty great little series. And the, the fruit
- 15:28of, I think it was like just basically the fruit
- 15:30of awareness. So it was just like him eating
- 15:33this weird, I don't, I don't use a lot of color.
- 15:35I pretty much just do pens, black pen. And but
- 15:39I put in a little bit of color for like oranges
- 15:41for like mangoes and mango juices. And that was
- 15:43kind of like the highlight of each picture. Whoa.
- 15:47So this one time you use color, maybe not one
- 15:50time, but one of the times you use color is in
- 15:53this drawing of this fruit of awareness. Yeah.
- 15:58At what point did you know you were going to
- 16:00add color to it? So I asked people online about
- 16:05like. should I add color and like everybody was
- 16:09like yes put color into it put lots of color
- 16:12into it and I did I put a lot of color into one
- 16:15or two other paintings or not painting just pictures
- 16:18and I was just like I fucking hate this oh yeah
- 16:21like I was like I hate this more than anything
- 16:23but I was like if I do add color it's like a
- 16:27sliver and it's basically that is what I try
- 16:30to make like the focal point a very small point
- 16:33small picture with a real bright color that basically
- 16:36just makes it like be like why is this here why
- 16:39are you different and i want and i want more
- 16:42of it because there's a it's a nice vibrant color
- 16:44especially in like in such a black and white
- 16:47world so like it should be like kind of just
- 16:50ah like how do you say it like just basically
- 16:53like kind of revered you know like you're like
- 16:54oh this is something that's very interesting
- 16:57this is important yeah it is a real highlight
- 17:01like especially because like i find a lot of
- 17:03the world can be very black and white where you're
- 17:05just like depending where you're at so like from
- 17:08me i think a lot of my art comes from sometimes
- 17:12a darker place so that's why it's a lot of it
- 17:14in black and white so that when i do throw in
- 17:17a piece of color it's it's to be sort of like
- 17:20oh shoot like we'll respect that you know or
- 17:23very intentional yeah very intentional So let
- 17:27me see. Do I have the OG Tomo? So like this is.
- 17:30Whoa. Okay. Well, what's going on here? Yes.
- 17:34This is just basically me warming up. I'm so
- 17:37distracted by everything that's going on here.
- 17:39I have a million and one questions. I'm overwhelmed
- 17:42by that. Okay. Love this little crab, man. Is
- 17:45that a crab? It's a crab sushi mint. Yeah. It's
- 17:49revenge of the sushi. Of course. Yes. So he's
- 17:54out there defending his sushi brethren. Okay.
- 17:58Oh, I couldn't tell that the, is it this apple
- 18:01situation, this fruit? I don't see. So there
- 18:05is a fruit. Yeah, that's just. Oh, on the corner.
- 18:07That's a little bong apple. Okay. So this is
- 18:10the OG. Yeah. Marijuana is legal in Canada. And
- 18:17then I tried this one out. So I was like trying
- 18:19to make my first piece of fruit. And I really
- 18:23liked that one. So that was kind of like some
- 18:26warmups and some, there's all, holy, yeah, this
- 18:29is a lot. What did you, is that actual highlighter
- 18:32though? It's so bright. It is a highlighter.
- 18:36Okay, yeah. It's just what I had around the house,
- 18:38yeah. Red pen? Yeah, it's a red pen, green pen.
- 18:42All the stuff I use, anybody can find in your
- 18:45home. Most people can find in your home. Oh,
- 18:47yeah. Yeah, or you can find it in your local
- 18:49school. It's really inexpensive. I think the
- 18:52most I've spent is $7 on some really nice little
- 18:56felt pens. Yeah. So yeah, and there's five of
- 18:59them. So we can do this. So yeah, so that was
- 19:05the first one where I just kind of got inspired
- 19:07by monkeys and Tomo. And he was our first character.
- 19:12Whoa, that's dark. It's really, yeah, sorry.
- 19:16That's dark. There's this like, oh, there's an
- 19:19eyeball in there. I love the shirt. It kind of
- 19:22goes back to you saying how you would travel
- 19:25and see other like fabric patterns and be really
- 19:28into it. It looks like, yeah, cool. The texture
- 19:32of that sweater is awesome. The hand, you nailed
- 19:35the hand. Oh my goodness. Hands are so hard and
- 19:39you, that, you nailed it. Really? Thank you.
- 19:42Yeah, I really wanted to make it look like he
- 19:44was reaching for it. Yeah. I love how stylized
- 19:49the faces it would be like I'm thinking lino
- 19:52cut okay yeah this is when did you do this this
- 19:57is really good I love I just love so many parts
- 20:00of it uh this was pretty early on this is my
- 20:03first um so I've only got two I have like one
- 20:06and a half sketchbooks done so this is my first
- 20:09sketchbook uh so it's about halfway through actually
- 20:13so I'm looking yeah I'm gonna say it's about
- 20:14halfway through my first little part of this
- 20:17but what's going on in this drawing can you explain
- 20:20it to me because some people aren't gonna see
- 20:22it the way i see it i guess if we just describe
- 20:25so there's a there's a monkey he's reaching for
- 20:27a mango and behind him there is a hand with a
- 20:31gun um the monkey has a halo over his head and
- 20:36there's like a click and uh like that's the hand
- 20:39of the thing it's like it's like no no nano and
- 20:42it's like tomo and uh so that's his name And
- 20:46then he goes, no, no, Nana. Give Tomo death,
- 20:53Papa. Which is, like, he's gotten sentient. And
- 20:56it's just, like, he wants more of it. And he's,
- 20:59like, I don't care. Like, if I can't have this,
- 21:01I want out. Like, leave me alone. Like, he's
- 21:04gotten to another place. So, yeah. Who knows
- 21:07where Tomo goes from there? So that's the OG.
- 21:12Oh, hold up. I love this. What's this? Oh, the
- 21:15Serbian surfer. The Serbian surfer. Okay. Yeah.
- 21:19So I got a little bit of Russian. There's a rat
- 21:24king on there. It's basically just like Eastern
- 21:27Europe. But like if you're going to be a surfer
- 21:29in Eastern Europe, like you're going to be a
- 21:32weird, fun character. Okay. So that's essentially
- 21:35where I built this guy's house and that behind
- 21:38it. And I put a little bit of highlighter into
- 21:40it so you could see on his board. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:43That was the first thing I noticed. It also kind
- 21:45of looks like leopard print. Is that what I'm
- 21:47seeing? Yes, that's what I went for. Yeah, leopard.
- 21:50I love it. I love leopard print. Okay, this is
- 21:53the Tomo. So this is Tomo part two. He's had
- 21:57more mango juice and now he's become more human.
- 21:59So he's learning more and he's out here fighting
- 22:02and defending our freedoms against an alien.
- 22:05Okay. And then there's, like, just this guy who's,
- 22:09like, sort of an overseer. And he's, like, basically,
- 22:12he's, what is he saying? He's, like, fight that
- 22:14alien like your grandpa fought the last monkey
- 22:16to get on the ark. And he accidentally, he's,
- 22:19like, whoops, so he drops in, like, drops in
- 22:22this knife. And it's, so, basically, the alien
- 22:25and Tomo are both in a pretty good scuffle. And
- 22:29right next to, so he's basically got mango juice
- 22:32or murder is where it's going for. And, yeah,
- 22:37there's some aliens in the background picking
- 22:39up people. Some planes coming to fight those
- 22:43aliens. And just, like, out in sort of the plains
- 22:45of Wyoming. So, yeah. And I think that's probably
- 22:49the last, let's see, the last, yeah, last bit
- 22:54there. And we haven't really done a whole lot
- 22:55of color since. That was my last Tomo bit. So
- 22:58we're on a cliffhanger with Tomo. Definitely
- 23:00going to go back and try and figure out the Tomo
- 23:02scenario. I love how he's lying. to build up
- 23:07dimension the the lines you put in to indicate
- 23:11that his mouth is coming out yeah yeah oh thank
- 23:15you i i just i saw it so i was like i think that's
- 23:18how that would look so yeah sort of rounded like
- 23:22we we have like very not too many lines in our
- 23:25face but these guys have way more so you have
- 23:27to really kind of get in there and just be detailed
- 23:30but it's tough to do with ballpoint but patience
- 23:33is key and literally just concentrate I love
- 23:36the fact when I can really do some art and I
- 23:38can just concentrate my friend and girlfriend
- 23:41were both saying last night like because like
- 23:43I'll be doing something and I'll go and they're
- 23:46like what whoa and I'm like I guess because I
- 23:49forgot to breathe for the last 45 to like a minute
- 23:52while I'm on something with these shaky hands
- 23:55so yeah that's another great thing about art
- 23:59is that it gives us that space to just exist.
- 24:02We don't have to worry about the time. We're
- 24:04just in it. And I think we super need moments,
- 24:08whatever it is, whether it's art or wrestling
- 24:10or, you know, whatever your thing is. We need
- 24:15things like that in our lives more often than
- 24:17not, because not doing that is exhausting. It
- 24:21is. I think it's great when you can get into
- 24:24that moment. You know, I find. I find it's just,
- 24:30like, whatever your passion is. I used to find
- 24:33with wrestling when I was younger, the whole
- 24:36world would just evaporate. It didn't matter
- 24:39that I wasn't getting good grades in school because
- 24:41of dyslexia. It didn't matter about, like, you
- 24:45know, how many friends you have. It's just there's
- 24:47this one area. And, like, for me, my whole world
- 24:50was where a bat was. the people in that room
- 24:54and just basically being like my partner my training
- 24:56partner and I just working towards something
- 24:58that I knew one day would get me to a better
- 25:01place so like and that's kind of the same thing
- 25:04I do with art but now it's just into a shape
- 25:06into like a sheet of paper I'm curious if or
- 25:09how long it takes for us to kind of get into
- 25:11that space not necessarily how long into a drawing
- 25:14but were you able when you started making art
- 25:17were you able to immediately kind of get into
- 25:19that flow or was there Were there some hurdles?
- 25:23Yeah, I guess like in that zone, right? Like
- 25:25we all kind of know the feeling of getting into
- 25:27that zone. Pretty much, very much the day variant.
- 25:30Like how much, like whatever was going on around
- 25:34me. But I did find that it was like with art,
- 25:36I've been able to pretty much to just sort of
- 25:38melt the world away. Just that's what I like
- 25:40about it. I think sometimes it can take 10 minutes,
- 25:44like, I don't know. Or sometimes it can be like,
- 25:46you're not feeling it the whole way through.
- 25:49And that's okay. That's okay. You're just like,
- 25:51okay, I guess I'm fighting myself. I'm going
- 25:53back and forth and just trying to get myself
- 25:55through this, this, this picture. But I think
- 25:58we all have a piece. Like you probably have one
- 26:00that you're like, okay, we're just going to get
- 26:01this done. Yeah. I had all these amazing intentions
- 26:05and then you're like, forget it. Yeah. I think
- 26:10you're underestimating my ability to. finish
- 26:14things I have I have way more unfinished things
- 26:17I think I'm more likely to abandon it than to
- 26:20force myself to finish it which really it's so
- 26:24cool hearing your perspective of you're just
- 26:26like okay I'm just gonna get through with this
- 26:29to the end and I'm like yeah maybe I'll just
- 26:30let this you know hide in my dresser for a few
- 26:35months before I look at it again or I think that
- 26:38might be us coming from two different worlds
- 26:40again yeah like I yeah whereas like I guess mine's
- 26:43like trying to be not in this. I feel like artists
- 26:47is maybe like more flow, but I don't know. Maybe
- 26:50artists is hard to figure out. Like it just varies
- 26:53from person to person. Like there's a spectrum
- 26:54to it. Like for me, mine is to basically get
- 26:58the job done. As soon as I started, I do like
- 27:01it. Like, I'm just like, I'm like, Hey, we gotta,
- 27:03we're going to go through all these bases. Like
- 27:06I usually start off on an ear to the jaw, to
- 27:08the eyes, whatever. And then I just feel like.
- 27:11I'm in the zone and I'm feeling good for it.
- 27:13And like more often than not, like it's very
- 27:16rare to basically go through a picture and be
- 27:18like, okay, I hated this the whole way through,
- 27:20but like there's sparks where you're like, okay,
- 27:22I'm liking this. Yeah. But I don't know. I don't
- 27:26feel right. I, I, I, as soon as I'm like, I've
- 27:29started something, I'm like, I can't, I can't
- 27:31tell. Like, like, yeah. Like, like we were trying
- 27:34to pull my girlfriend. braids apart today and
- 27:37I was she's like you have to go do the podcast
- 27:39and I was like oh no but we're almost finished
- 27:41and I'm like I'm like we're not done I left it
- 27:44halfway through so I'm like I have to finish
- 27:45this once I start something so I abandoned that
- 27:49project that brings me back to our parachute
- 27:52untangling days where we just days eight hour
- 27:56days of untangling this massive parachute that
- 28:01smelled bad sometimes they smelled bad do you
- 28:03remember that they would smell so bad seawater
- 28:06yeah right like because they would just ship
- 28:08it with the seawater and you'd be like oh that's
- 28:10different where the ones back from the desert
- 28:12had there was a snake there was one snake i was
- 28:16like holy yeah that was pretty terrifying yeah
- 28:19also poor snake it does not belong here what
- 28:22i don't even know what happened to the snake
- 28:24maybe i'm blocking it up I also, what I love
- 28:28about your art is that it's so like story -driven.
- 28:32Yeah, I think so. I think that might come out
- 28:35of being dyslexic, like not being good at writing.
- 28:38Yeah, kind of wanting to tell my story, but just
- 28:42it won't be written down or written well. So
- 28:46it's like, I can kind of express myself through
- 28:49this. And if somebody wants to talk to me, we
- 28:50can always just chat. Have you ever heard of,
- 28:52I always say them wrong, zine? No. Zine. They're
- 28:57called zines. I always want to say zine because
- 28:59it looks like the word vine. When I read it,
- 29:03I just assumed it was zine, but it's actually
- 29:05zine. But I always say it the wrong way. Do you
- 29:07know what they are? No. This is the fun part.
- 29:11They're like little books. You can make them
- 29:13out of folding standard A4, like a printer piece
- 29:17of paper. In a certain way, you can look it up
- 29:19online. And they're just little books, essentially.
- 29:23And this is the change. And it's mostly just
- 29:25got pictures in it. Okay. I'm more of a pictures
- 29:29kind of person, but I can see your little characters
- 29:32living in a little book. In the zine world, yeah.
- 29:35I guess so. Who knows what number 69 is going
- 29:39to be. As someone who doesn't do a lot of drawing
- 29:43and mostly does collaging for the most part,
- 29:46seeing how drawing -centered you are has inspired
- 29:51me at least to make more space for drawing in
- 29:54my life. Yeah. haven't really taken up that space,
- 29:57but I made a little collage book like this, but
- 30:00a little bit different. And I made it this weird
- 30:04shaped sketchbook. So it's small. There's like
- 30:07four pages maybe. And there's weird paper on
- 30:10each of them, but them are just little strips
- 30:13of paper. I almost said fabric, but I'm going
- 30:19to kind of let that sit. And I think I'm going
- 30:20to revisit it and try some. pen drawing a la
- 30:25john oh that'd be cool yeah like a nice collage
- 30:29is because if you like doing borders already
- 30:31yeah your border now is your collage and now
- 30:35you're putting something through that whoa i
- 30:38didn't even think of it like that oh yeah and
- 30:41it's a fun way to use magazine scraps because
- 30:45you end up just using these little things that
- 30:47you might cut up and you're like oh i want to
- 30:49use that but i don't know how so Also, we did
- 30:51have a theme picked for next. Do you remember
- 30:56what it was? I'm just going to look it up now.
- 30:59Ooh, handling rejection. Do we want to talk about
- 31:01that next time? We love rejection. Handling rejection.
- 31:06Too bad I'm going to do better on the next week's
- 31:08test. Okay. We're planting seeds here. Perfect.
- 31:13Last week, you were talking about your early
- 31:16drawings and you were calling them bad. And there
- 31:18was this instinct I had of like, oh, there's
- 31:20no such thing as bad art, blah, blah, blah. And
- 31:22as I was trying to edit our audio from last week,
- 31:26I was realizing that audio editing is quite a
- 31:29refined art. And it's not just something that
- 31:32I'm immediately going to be good at. And I was
- 31:34myself saying like, oh, I'm so bad at this. I
- 31:37was like, wait a minute. I've never done this
- 31:39before or haven't done this since high school.
- 31:41Like, why am I? expecting myself to be a genius.
- 31:45So mad respect to audio editors. It is a skill
- 31:49that, but my brother's girlfriend, I think did
- 31:55her master's in it or something. Anyway, she
- 31:57has been so helpful in guiding me through a process.
- 32:03Yeah. Also really resonated with. you're like,
- 32:06Oh, I'm bad at this. And just, you were speaking
- 32:10of the, I don't know if you used frustration,
- 32:12but just the growing pains of learning how to
- 32:15do something for the first time. Yeah. It's okay
- 32:18to call yourself that in the beginning, but then
- 32:20you work your way out through it. Yeah. Cause
- 32:22like, it's like, otherwise you just have this
- 32:24false sense of confidence and just like, you're
- 32:27like, I'm great. Cause if you're, cause if I
- 32:29started off and was just like, did that first,
- 32:32like post Malone drawing, uh, I would have been
- 32:35like, oh, I'm like, I'm great. And then like,
- 32:39then like, no, no point in this. But like seeing
- 32:41the next drawing being like, hey, there was markable
- 32:44improvement from there. And we're just going
- 32:46to keep ripping it from there. So yeah. I like
- 32:50that you normalize that it's okay to look at
- 32:52your art and know that there's areas that you
- 32:55want to work on. And also admiring what has been
- 32:59made. I think, again, we need both sides. Yeah.
- 33:03yeah you got to look at it and be like oh how
- 33:05do you for starting bud yes it's the same thing
- 33:09for the gym like for anybody like you're like
- 33:11or whatever medium you i don't want to be like
- 33:14pigeonholing myself but i'm like yeah the gym
- 33:16was kind of the same thing for me too where you're
- 33:18like okay i'm lifting nothing and then there's
- 33:21these massive dudes and you're like oh god they're
- 33:24like they're never going to want to talk to you
- 33:26but like you talk to those big guys and they'll
- 33:28be the nicest dude in the gym For the most part,
- 33:31not everybody, not everyone, disclaimer. Don't
- 33:37talk to all huge strangers in the gym. They don't
- 33:40always want it. Sometimes you got to look in
- 33:42their eyes and you're like, huh, he looks like
- 33:44he's going to rip my head off. Probably don't
- 33:46talk to that guy. But if you look and you give
- 33:47somebody the nod and they give you the nod back,
- 33:50because that's just etiquette because we're all
- 33:52listening to our own music. And so if you give
- 33:55them the nod, they'll give you the nod. They'll
- 33:56chat with you. So like the same thing for art.
- 33:58Like I was like, my buddy Mikey was way, way
- 34:00better than me. And I was just like, oh, could
- 34:02you show me something? And he was just like,
- 34:04yeah. And you're just like, oh, that's so much
- 34:08nicer and so much easier. Right. So talk to each
- 34:10other and learn that we're all novices. So what
- 34:14I kind of liked about your gym story was that
- 34:17it really highlighted that people are complex
- 34:20and not necessarily. scary people aren't necessarily
- 34:24scary if they look scary I get that a lot I don't
- 34:28think I look scary and most people like but when
- 34:30I have a big beard and I'm working out and I'm
- 34:33thinking of other things people do think tend
- 34:35to think that I'm not friendly and then it couldn't
- 34:39be further from the truth like we chat we're
- 34:41just going to chat and have a good time but like
- 34:43yeah people do judge like I am kind of covered
- 34:46in tattoos and larger so I understand that I
- 34:52might be intimidating the regular people, but
- 34:54I really try my best to just be like the opposite
- 34:58of that. I like what you mentioned in last week's
- 35:03at the end where you're like, Oh, I'm excited
- 35:05to see us get better at this. And I was like,
- 35:07Oh yeah, that's such a good thing to remember.
- 35:10Yeah. Pretty raw. I'm 68 drawings deep and we're
- 35:16two episodes into a podcast. So it's all pretty
- 35:19fresh. So you're like, Oh, it's pretty exciting.
- 35:21yeah you know like it would be cool to interview
- 35:24I think we could also interview artists oh big
- 35:28time I think that's something we do for sure
- 35:30I think that has to be something like it's just
- 35:33such a I think it's such a cool way to go about
- 35:36it like you with actual art background and me
- 35:40as somebody who's just enthused about their stuff
- 35:42so like Yeah. If you want to come on the show,
- 35:45we'll, we'll, we'll take anybody. Yeah. Let's
- 35:48go. And we've already mentioned a few people.
- 35:52Like you've mentioned Mikey. Mike. Yeah. I probably,
- 35:55my only former reference. It's like you and Mike.
- 35:59That's it. My aunt. I have an aunt who draws.
- 36:02Okay. I'll bring her on. Awesome. I love that.
- 36:07She's sweet. She's a nice lady. And I love learning
- 36:10from everyone because everyone has something
- 36:13to teach us. Oh yeah. There's like skill sets
- 36:16that like you're going to be like a master in
- 36:18and then there's other stuff you're just like
- 36:20not going to be able to. And like, that's how
- 36:22we all sort of work together. Cool. And I'm sure
- 36:24this will play into next episode of rejection
- 36:29or handling rejection. I'm in love with that
- 36:32episode. That's going to be dope.
