- 0:42I will. Always take you.
- 0:45Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me get Richie.
- 0:46I'm going to do real quick with Richie because I want you last.
- 0:48I want you. I want you my anchor leg.
- 0:50And Richie always, if he ever wants to sit down with me, I
- 0:54always sit down. He just makes it longer by doing
- 0:57this. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01Ryan Krauser's birthday is on Wednesday, and he turns 32.
- 1:04Holy cow, I can't believe he's only 32.
- 1:08Scoot in a little bit here with me.
- 1:09They want to see your beautiful face and microphone has to be
- 1:12pretty close to your mouth. Introduce yourself as if you
- 1:14need any introduction. Hi, I'm Richard Bean, track and
- 1:19field coach, cross country at Alabama State University.
- 1:22How do you resist not wearing 1 championship ring on every
- 1:26finger everywhere you go? Cuz after as many as you have
- 1:29won with your athletes and coaching Staffs, I would do it
- 1:32everywhere I go. You know, I have one that I I
- 1:36wear all the time. The other ones are in the man
- 1:39cave. Yeah, how big of a ring display
- 1:43must you have, dude, I. Have two cases.
- 1:45Yeah, dude, it's still so iconic that picture on online of it and
- 1:52that was like probably 10 rings ago, by the way.
- 1:54It's a really, it's like the iconic Michael Jordan picture
- 1:57when he had, you know, a ring for each finger.
- 1:59It always reminds us like, oh, this is our version right here.
- 2:03Hi, Mr. Richie Bean, by the way, Guild podcast alum use the same
- 2:06podcast you're listening to right now, unless you're
- 2:08watching live, of course, and you gotta hear this story, this
- 2:12journey, his journey in story is important and pretty heart felt
- 2:18there. There was there's some tragedy
- 2:19there that I'm so grateful for you to, you know, open up and be
- 2:23authentic and tell us. But it's what we all go through
- 2:25some of these things like this. And I'm just grateful for you
- 2:28again, sharing that with our listeners.
- 2:29All right, Richie there, the topic for the year, the night
- 2:34here is the NCAA and all the changes that are going on.
- 2:37You're at A Division One school that has done really, really
- 2:39well, really, really well with developing kids, however you
- 2:41wanted to find that, but kids being at the highest, highest
- 2:44level, many, many championships. What do you think, thoughts,
- 2:48feelings, actions on all this NCAA stuff, how it might affect
- 2:51you, maybe how you're preparing for it?
- 2:53What's your thoughts? Well, to be honest with you
- 2:56there, there's there's so many thoughts and honestly, Mike, I'm
- 3:01I'm in a listening. Phase at.
- 3:03At this point right now, I, I lean on the side of wisdom.
- 3:08I I've been blessed and privileged to send in several
- 3:11different rooms at the NCA level, USCFCCA level, and hear a
- 3:16lot of voices. But I think one of the biggest
- 3:19thing now is people need to educate themselves on what is
- 3:22and what's not. How?
- 3:24How do you do that, though, when there has been so little
- 3:27guidance sent down? We don't know.
- 3:30Like it's so funny. Even just tonight, we've had
- 3:32people say that the, you know, utilizing the 45 and 17 numbers,
- 3:36that the 17 on your cross country roster are not going to
- 3:39count towards your 45. And then someone else's down
- 3:41says, Oh yeah, no, they are. And then you can opt in, but you
- 3:46can also not opt in and still go to NC Double HI Mean there's
- 3:49there's been this is where I think they did a really bad job.
- 3:51But by the way, I think the World Athletics did a bad job
- 3:53with this with their new rules. Like that long jump specifically
- 3:56is they throw this stuff out there and then just leave it up
- 3:59to us to figure, not not even figure it out, because they're
- 4:02going to figure it out, but they leave it up to us to guess and
- 4:04conjecture and stress about. There's just so little actual
- 4:09guidance towards you guys on what you are actually going to
- 4:12be able to do and not do and how it's going to operate.
- 4:14Well, Mike, it's, it's a lot of things and, and, and you just
- 4:17hit the nail on the head. You've talked to several
- 4:20different coaches tonight and you've heard several different
- 4:23things that were somewhere on the same wildly.
- 4:26Different, yes, right. And you know, this, this, this,
- 4:31this, this thing going on with the with the changes and things
- 4:34like that, I've heard from administrators, I've heard from
- 4:38coaches, I've heard from almost every level.
- 4:41And you'll get different answers from everybody.
- 4:43And it's, it's kind of disheartening.
- 4:46It is. Because the sport that I grew to
- 4:49love is the sport now and I I often question myself, do I
- 4:54still want to be a part of? Because what happened to old
- 4:57school coaching? What happened to every young
- 5:01man, every young woman put on a uniform, go out there, represent
- 5:05their family name, their school name and their university or
- 5:08whatever to the best of their ability.
- 5:10I mean, we're we're, we're, we're pushing toward making it a
- 5:14team sport. And I mean, if you're good at
- 5:17what you do, track is one of the the true sports where anybody
- 5:22and everybody can get the business any day, even if your
- 5:25own teammate and. That's the.
- 5:26Beauty of it where if you run in 100, there's no.
- 5:29Timeout. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 5:32Once you start down the runway, it's it's you against.
- 5:34Yeah, and. Now, I mean, how do you
- 5:38conceptualize that into the making it something different
- 5:41than what it's what it's been for so many years?
- 5:43That's what I struggle. With yeah, agree do you in wise
- 5:47words for someone who's been around for a while and you know
- 5:50I'm always conflicted when I say this next thing about coaches of
- 5:53your age and stages. Yeah, yeah, I'm going there.
- 5:57You're going to retire and and I and I'm going to say this
- 6:00hopefully soon. And what I mean by that is
- 6:02because I think you deserve it, not because I want you you know
- 6:05I don't want you out of coaching, but I want you to and
- 6:08your family to enjoy retirement. We all hopefully went towards
- 6:12retirement. Do you have not not knowing and
- 6:15you don't have to reflect anything here tonight.
- 6:17That could be next year, could be 10 years.
- 6:19I don't know. We don't need to know but but
- 6:21it's imminent in that sense with with you.
- 6:23Do you look at this differently like are you and this isn't the
- 6:27Richie being that I know so I'm sure you're going to answer no
- 6:29to this. Are you just like I'm just going
- 6:31to buy my time Mike. I'm going to be gone retired
- 6:34here in 2345. It's not going to really affect
- 6:36me or because of the leadership I know that is within you.
- 6:39Are you like yeah, yeah, OK, I may have 234 whatever, you know,
- 6:42time frame you have. I'm going to lead every second
- 6:44that I have. Well, it's.
- 6:46It's it's, it's so funny that you bought that, but man, you
- 6:49know, you and I are, are 222 men with like spirits.
- 6:54Yep. Right.
- 6:57Just last week, you know, I'm not saying that I'm, I'm looking
- 7:00to retire, but I, I literally last week went in and start
- 7:04putting my ducks in a row. Just making sure because I mean,
- 7:08I when I get out on the track, I enjoy being out there with the
- 7:13students. It's so fun.
- 7:15But when you sit in the office and you.
- 7:17Sit in these. Meetings it makes you.
- 7:18Wonder what am I doing? How has this changed?
- 7:23How has it changed? You know, and I'm actually, I'm
- 7:26not, I'm not rushing to get out of sport.
- 7:28I think I have many more years ahead of me.
- 7:31But I want to. I don't want to be somewhere
- 7:33where I'm not enjoying it. I don't want to be a part of.
- 7:36And you deserve to be at some place where you're enjoying it,
- 7:38yes, in a profession that you enjoy and.
- 7:40Be somewhere where you're tolerating.
- 7:43I'm not saying that toward my universe, but it's it's a lot of
- 7:46things that people are doing to tolerate each other now.
- 7:49And that's the part where, well, you know, we'll do this for now
- 7:52or we'll do this. I just, we really, really as
- 7:56coaches, as a sport need to take a hard look.
- 7:58We need to stop putting stuff out there that's not true.
- 8:02It's a lot of things going out that's not true.
- 8:04There's a lot of information that's not that's not fully
- 8:06vetted and, and there's a lot of things out there administrators
- 8:10are trying to figure out and, and, and the coaches and the
- 8:13kids are suffering. I don't know, Mike.
- 8:17Yeah, see, but yay, we'll, we'll take you as long as there's
- 8:21still a sport. We gotta have a sport that's
- 8:23we're very keen on that Richie, thank you so much man.
- 8:25A little shorter tonight, but again, I implore you to go and
- 8:28take, take a listen to his, his journey cause it was special
- 8:32man, you're special and one of the most proud things that you
- 8:36can say to me is that you and I are kindred spirits, man, that
- 8:39there's a lot of other good compliments you can give me that
- 8:41one that one stirs my soul brother.
- 8:43I appreciate you my. Brother.
- 8:45Look. Thank you.
- 8:49We're down.
