- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium for a Saturday afternoon game on April 10th, 1976.
- 0:14The Yankees hadn't been to the postseason in 12 years, its longest drought since 1920, but there was some new excitement in town thanks to the hiring of manager Billy Martin.
- 0:23This was the year before the signing of Reggie Jackson, but the Yankees had also made some big moves prior to the season when they acquired Willie Randolph, Mickey Rivers, Doc Ellis, Oscar Gamble, Doyle Alexander, and Carlos May.
- 0:36The 1976 Brewers were managed by newcomer Alex Gramis.
- 0:40Following the success of his coaching involvement under Sparky Anderson's Big Red Machine, the Brewers set their sights on Gramis as their next skipper and signed him to a three-year contract in November of 1975.
- 0:501976 also marked the final season for home run king Hank Aaron. Aaron left the Braves and joined the Brewers in 1975 in order to return back to Milwaukee.
- 1:00This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Bill White.
- 1:30...to Mickey Rivers, oh and two. John Milton Rivers, where do you get the nickname Mickey?
- 1:35When he grew up in Florida, he was a big Mickey Mantle fan and that's how it all started.
- 1:40Oh two pitch coming, take it outside on the fastball, ball one.
- 1:47One ball, two strikes to Mickey Rivers leading it off for the Yankees here in the top of the first.
- 1:52And the one-two pitch swung on, popped up into the air, George Scott under it in fair territory in the first base and puts it away.
- 2:01So Mickey Rivers pops up too, George Scott, there's one away from the Yankees here in the top of the first and it'll bring up left fielder Roy White.
- 2:10White sets the collar Thursday afternoon, an 0-3 performance.
- 2:15White this afternoon batting left-handed, right-handed that is, against the left-handed pitching Bill Travers.
- 2:23Wind blowing out to left and the first pitch fouled away to the right up over the Milwaukee dugout, strike one.
- 2:32They play white medium deep, left fielder Charlie Moore shaded a bit to the left.
- 2:41And the 0-1 pitch coming out of Roy White, bumped it on at the plate, fouled away, strike two.
- 2:47So Bill Travers gets ahead of White at Rivers one and two before Mickey pops up to George Scott at first base.
- 2:55And now a quick 0-2 count on Roy White.
- 2:59White a 2-72 hitter last year for the Yankees.
- 3:03And the 0-2 pitch line fouled down the first base line into the stand, count holds 0-2.
- 3:09White just trying to get a piece of it, punching it foul.
- 3:14And Travers still ahead of the hitter, throwing only one ball to the first two batters.
- 3:190-2 pitch curve ball down low and inside, ball one.
- 3:23One and two to White.
- 3:25Thurman Munson, the Yankee designated hitter is on deck.
- 3:30And the 1-2 pitch, swung on and missed, strike three.
- 3:35Bill Travers gets his first strikeout, Roy White and now Thurman Munson, counts to the plate.
- 3:45Munson went 0-4 Thursday, coming off a 3-18 season.
- 3:52And the first Yankee to drive home more than 100 runs in more than a decade.
- 3:59Rick Dempsey doing the catching until Munson's finger heels, he can swing that bat but Thurman says he just can't really throw the baseball the way he'd like to.
- 4:09So here's Munson stepping in, they play Thurman full.
- 4:14And the first pitch breaks in there, strike one, call.
- 4:190-1.
- 4:24Bill Travers, a left-hander, used the fork ball quite a bit.
- 4:29Pitch with no spin, breaks down and around a lot, kind of like a knuckleball.
- 4:34Next pitch outside, ball one.
- 4:36One and one to Thurman Munson, two outs, top of the first.
- 4:42No score in the ball game.
- 4:45And the 1-1 pitch, fastball low and inside, two and one.
- 4:51Ground crew was working on that mound feverishly prior to the start of the ball game.
- 5:00Following Yankee manager Billy Martin's protest of Thursday afternoon's game.
- 5:06Two and one pitch, left-hander kicks and throws, curve ball breaks low and inside, and the count goes 3-1 to Thurman Munson with Chris Shambles on deck.
- 5:18Travers getting ahead of the first two hitters, getting rivers to pop out, white to strike out, and here's the 3-1 pitch.
- 5:27Long on, bounce to short, three hops, Robin Young has it, comes up throwing a shot, inside, side retired, Yankees go down, one, two, three.
- 5:35No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 5:37The score after half an inning of play, the Yankees nothing, the Brewers coming to back.
- 5:42The program, that's Chris Shambles at first, rookie Willie Randolph at second, Fred Fanley at the shortstop, Greg Nettles at third, Roy White in left field, Mickey Rivers in center, Luke Pennella is in right.
- 5:54Charlie Moore will lead it off for the Brewers.
- 5:57Moore a converted catcher, moving to the outfield, very aggressive ball player.
- 6:04Alex Gramis, all night comparing him to Pete Rose as far as ability is concerned, is telling me he compares him in many ways in his desire and his aggressiveness.
- 6:15Going out to left field, still says he prefers catching, but he'll play anywhere.
- 6:19First pitch by Ed Figueroa, the Yankees, taking in their strike one.
- 6:28Figueroa, right-handed pitcher, and they play Charlie Moore to pull the ball, center fielder Mickey Rivers shaded way over to the left, and the pitch taken in there, strike two, call.
- 6:37Figueroa goes out in front, oh and two on Charlie Moore.
- 6:43Figueroa doesn't strike out many, but then again he doesn't walk too many.
- 6:47Last year, 84 bases on balls and 139 strikeouts.
- 6:52Oh and two pitch, check swing, swung on and missed those, as played on fire George Maloney, strike three.
- 6:58So Charlie Moore goes down on three pitches and there's one man away.
- 7:02It'll bring up third baseman Don Money.
- 7:05Money was one of the keys for the Brewers Thursday afternoon.
- 7:09After Catfish Hunter got Moore in a pop-up, he went ahead oh and two on Don Money.
- 7:14Money fouled off about a half dozen pitches, finally worked the count to three and two and then bounced one hard down the third baseline in between nettles in the bag for a double, and the Brewers were off and running for three runs.
- 7:26First pitch by Figueroa, taking up high ball one.
- 7:32Figueroa throws an excellent sinker, gets the sign from Rick Dempsey, and the pitch, fastball, strike one, one and one.
- 7:41So Don Money, Money wound up the afternoon two for four, coming off a 277 batting season last year.
- 7:54And the one-one pitch, swung on, fouled at the plate, strike two.
- 7:58So Figueroa gets ahead of Don Money with George Scott on deck.
- 8:07Scott the big man for the Milwaukee Brewers, for the league and RBI's.
- 8:13Tied Reggie Jackson for the league lead and home run.
- 8:21Figueroa gets the sign, one-two pitch, hit high into the air, right field, curving foul, moving over Panella, and it bounces into the stands up and about the fourth row, so the count holds one ball, two strikes.
- 8:33Long run for Sweetmoo Panella, and he heads back now to his position in right field.
- 8:47Who can't believe we're sitting here in our shirts, please, this afternoon, temperature around 60, and they say it may snow tomorrow. Fastball, strike three, and Figueroa has struck out two in a row, called third strike to Don Money, and it'll bring up George Scott.
- 9:03George Scott, the power hitter for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 9:09One-oh for three Thursday, super fielding third baseman, five times winner of the American League's Golden Glove Award, five years in a row overall, seven times.
- 9:21First pitch to Scott, fastball high and inside, and Scott hits the deck, and the crowd responds.
- 9:32He's now up and wiping the dirt from his pants legs, as plate umpire George Maloney calls third.
- 9:45Figueroa ready, the one-oh pitch, taking high and inside, ball two. Scott just backing away a bit.
- 9:52George Scott coming off the best season of his major league career, this is 11th year in the big leagues, his fifth in Milwaukee, 202 career home run, 222 against the Yankees last season.
- 10:08And Figueroa looks in now to Dempsey, around comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, swung on and missed, strike one. George Scott with a heavy cut, and the count now two and one, Roy White playing him extremely deep and left.
- 10:22Mickey Rivers just about straight away in center. Shortstop Stanley about three steps from the outfield grass, two-one pitch up, eyeball three.
- 10:36On deck for the Milwaukee Brewers, catcher Darrell Porter.
- 10:48And the three-one pitch coming, taking up high, ball four, so George Scott works the walk with two men away, and Darrell Porter.
- 10:58The catcher went one for three. Thursday afternoon comes to the plate. Porter's just 23 years of age, just a real young ball club these Milwaukee Brewers have.
- 11:11At 18 home runs last season, it's 232. Two of those homers were grand slammers, and both came against Baltimore. Now Yankee manager Billy Martin goes out to the mound to talk with that Figueroa.
- 11:25Rick Dempsey joins him, along with Greg Nettle, and perhaps a discussion of the mound. Billy wanting to ask, but you're at Figueroa, the mound is okay. Now Martin returns.
- 11:43And Darrell Porter steps in. George Scott leads away from first base with two outs. Here in the bottom of the first, no score. The stretch and the pitch, high on outside, ball one.
- 11:58Figueroa got more and money on strikes than walks Scott. The stretch, Scott takes the lead, the pitch taking high on outside, ball two, and the fastball, and it's 2-0.
- 12:12Looking down to third base, Darrell Porter to coach Jimmy Bragan.
- 12:19Hit or take, we'll see. 2-0 pitch coming. Outside again, ball three. Figueroa trying to keep the ball away from Darrell Porter, keeping it too far away.
- 12:30And he's falling behind, 3-0, with Henry Aaron on deck.
- 12:45Ganks play Porter to really pull that baseball. Fretz Stanley just about six-eighths steps to the left of second base. And the pitch, down low, ball four.
- 12:55Four straight pitches, Darrell Porter walks, and the cheers for Hammer and Henry Aaron.
- 13:13Aaron in his first time up, Thursday afternoon, single home, two off, catfish hunter. And in the second inning, he single home a third run.
- 13:22And that's really all the Brewers needed. Two outs, two runners lead away. Figueroa throws to Aaron, and the pitch up, high ball, one.
- 13:37George Scott leads away from second, Darrell Porter from first. The Brewer fans start the rhythmic applause.
- 13:43To the stretch, yet Figueroa checks the runners and the pitch taken in their strike one call.
- 13:50At Zinkerball, just above the knees, and the county.
- 13:57Two outs, bottom of the first, no score, Brewers threatening.
- 14:03Wind blowing out to the left, Aaron now calls time at the plate.
- 14:08Greg Nettles about six-eighths steps off the third baseline, Roy White deep in left.
- 14:15And the one-one pitch to Henry, bounce to short, two hops to Stanley, throws to Randolph at second for the fourth, and the side is retired.
- 14:23For the Milwaukee Brewers, there were no runs, no bases, there were no Yankee errors, and there were two men left on base.
- 14:30So through one inning of play, the score, the Yankees nothing, the Brewers nothing.
- 14:35No score in the ball game, the Brewers threatening without a base hit in that bottom half of the first inning.
- 14:41When that Figueroa had a touch of wildness, walking George Scott and Darrell Porter, but he got Henry Aaron, the bounce into the force play.
- 14:48Leading it off for the Yankees, left-handed swinging, Chris Shambliss, the first baseman to be followed by Luke Fenella and Greg Nettles.
- 14:57Shambliss went 0-4 in the opening game, slow curve, taking up high ball one.
- 15:04Left-hander Bill Travers, they play Shambliss straight away.
- 15:10And the one-one pitch fastball lined to center, Sisto Lescano has a beat on it and puts it away.
- 15:16Well-hit baseball, but right to Sisto Lescano, and there's one away.
- 15:23Luke Fenella is first at bat of the 1976 season.
- 15:28Luke suffered, really suffered through the 1975 season with an inner ear infection, hitting only 196 after a Super 305 season back in 1974.
- 15:42The even years seem to be Fenella's best, 74, 72, and 70, batted over 300.
- 15:48First pitch bowled away at the plate, up off the screen, strike one.
- 15:55No balls, one strike to Luke Fenella.
- 16:05Luke's super line drive hitter does not hit that many home runs.
- 16:10His career high 11 with Kansas City, curveball breaks inside and checking his swing was Fenella.
- 16:18First base umpire Jim McKeon was asked by George Maloney if Fenella went around.
- 16:23He said no, so the count evened one-on-one.
- 16:28Travers looks in for the side, and the one-one pitch fastball inside, ball two.
- 16:36On deck, Greg Nettles, the Yankee third baseman.
- 16:41Should anybody get a board, catcher Rick Dempsey.
- 16:45Fenella now steps out.
- 16:47The cows be coaching his third.
- 16:50Now to first base, one of the all-time great Yankees, Elston Howard.
- 16:55Two-and-one pitch.
- 16:57Swung on, bounced to short, three hops, Robin Yonk gets it on the short one, flips the shot inside for the out, and there are two quick ones for the Yankees here in the top of the second.
- 17:09And it'll bring up Greg Nettles.
- 17:12Nettles 0 for 3.
- 17:15Thursday afternoon.
- 17:18A big season for Greg back in 1975.
- 17:23Nettles at 267 with 21 homers, 91 RBI.
- 17:27Left-handed hitter against the left-handed pitching Bill Travers.
- 17:32First pitch fastball inside, ball one.
- 17:37They're playing Nettles just about straight away and deep.
- 17:43The pitch up high and tight, ball two, 2-0 to Greg Nettles with two men out here on the top of the second inning.
- 17:51From the school of ball game, Rick Dempsey on deck.
- 17:57Travers gets the side from Porter, 2-0 pitch again inside, ball three, trying to jam Greg Nettles, keep it on the inside corner, and Travers is falling behind.
- 18:12He's set, gets the side from Porter, and the 3-0 pitch, taken in there, strike one, go. Nettles taking all the way.
- 18:27Greg will be swinging at this one if it's a good one. 3-1 pitch, swung on, bounced the first, curving foul.
- 18:34Played there by George Scott who flips it back to Travers.
- 18:38Nettles gets a light with a count remaining at three and one and a long walk back to home plate.
- 18:44Opening day at Yankee Stadium, next Thursday afternoon against Minnesota, and now it already is still out.
- 18:52Make it to the new Yankee Stadium Saturday or Sunday afternoon as the Yankees go against Rod Carew and the Minnesota Twins.
- 19:01They win 2-2 pitch, swung on and missed, strike three. So Travers recovers and gets Greg Nettles for his second strike out of the ball game.
- 19:10Nothing across for New York in the top of the second. No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on base.
- 19:16Throw an inning and a half. The Yanks nothing, the Brewers nothing.
- 19:20For the second inning now, the Brewers send out center fielder, 6th-dollars, Scott-O, Bill Sharp, and Robin Yarns.
- 19:28They're telling a super play on Greg Nettles, robbing him at least a triple Thursday afternoon.
- 19:33First pitch by Figueroa, taking up high ball one. Scott-O has one for four.
- 19:39He was one of the problems last year, so to speak, for manager Del Crandall.
- 19:45Line drive, center field, base hit.
- 19:48Nicky Rivers plays it on two hops, flips it back in his second, taking the turn with Scott-O.
- 19:53He holds on with a first base hit of the ball game, a line single to center.
- 19:59The Brewers with the lead runner on it, right fielder Bill Sharp coming to the play.
- 20:04Early in the ball game, let's see what Alex Dramis does.
- 20:09Greg Nettles standing on the grass, down the third baseline.
- 20:19Taking the lead from first is Lescano. Bill Sharp, left-handed hitter.
- 20:25Figueroa to the stretch, and the Yankees call for the pitch out.
- 20:29Lescano was not going. He stole a dozen bases last year.
- 20:33That was tops for the twins. They are not particularly a running ball club.
- 20:46The Brewers, Bill Sharp at the plate.
- 20:50And the 1-0 pitch taken up by ball two, 2-0.
- 20:56For Bill Sharp, who was not traded to the Minnesota Twins in the last five minutes, he is still a Milwaukee Brewer.
- 21:06At Figueroa, his first appearance as the New York Yankee coming off a strong spring
- 21:11and a 16-game winning season out in California.
- 21:15And the pitch up high, ball three.
- 21:19Figueroa had control problems back in the first inning.
- 21:22After striking Joe Charlie Moore and Don Money, he walked the couple before pitching out of the jam.
- 21:32Short conference between Rick Dempsey and Figueroa.
- 21:35Greg Nettles joining it for a moment.
- 21:40Leading away from first, six-0 Lescano.
- 21:42Let it off here on the bottom of the second with a single.
- 21:45The pitch taken in there, strike one, call.
- 21:47Three and one.
- 21:49Shortstop Robin Yantzi on deck batter.
- 21:56Yankees play sharp straight away.
- 22:00To the stretch, Figueroa.
- 22:02Throw over to first, Lescano diving back.
- 22:05And he is safe.
- 22:10Figueroa trying to keep them close.
- 22:14Here is over again.
- 22:15Goes to the stretch.
- 22:16Lescano takes about a six, seven foot lead.
- 22:19And the pitch.
- 22:20Line grabbed by Shamblett who will double Lescano off first base.
- 22:24Super play by Shamblett who grabbed a hard hit line drive and easily doubled off sixth
- 22:30to Lescano at first for the double play.
- 22:33If you are scoring, that goes as three on the double play.
- 22:36Shortstop Robin Yant comes to the play.
- 22:40Yant went 0 for three in the season opener.
- 22:44Coming off a 267 season and no longer a teenager.
- 22:48Third full season in the bigs.
- 22:50He is only 20.
- 22:51Takes the first pitch high and inside ball one.
- 22:57Center fielder Mickey Rivers playing relatively shallow.
- 23:01The pitch fouled into the stands behind the plate.
- 23:05Lescano is even one ball one strike to Robin Yant.
- 23:14Jimmy Bragan coaching down at third.
- 23:16Harvey Keane down at first.
- 23:19And the pitch.
- 23:20Line left field just over the glove.
- 23:23Shortstop Stanley Bay fifth.
- 23:25Stanley timed his lead perfectly.
- 23:27But just up over his outstretched glove for the Bay sixth.
- 23:31On at first is Yant with a single.
- 23:33And right here, we pause for station identification.
- 23:36This is the New York Yankee baseball network.
- 23:41This is WMCA Straus Communications in New York.
- 23:47Pedro Garcia the batter with two men out.
- 23:51And the pitch taking up high ball one.
- 23:53Robin Yant down at first with a two out single.
- 23:57Spencer Ross for Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto and Bill White at Milwaukee County Stadium.
- 24:02In a scoreless ball game in the bottom of the second.
- 24:05Brewers with two Bay sixths in this inning.
- 24:10Double play getting the Yankees out of a bit of trouble.
- 24:13The pitch pops up into the air.
- 24:16Catcher Rick Dempsey down the line.
- 24:18Wave settles off and he makes the catch for the third out.
- 24:22So again, Figueroa pitches out of a jam and leaves two runners on base.
- 24:28For the Brewers, no run.
- 24:30There were two Bay sixths.
- 24:32There were no Yankee errors.
- 24:33And two left.
- 24:34Two innings complete.
- 24:35The score, Yankees nothing, Brewers nothing.
- 24:38For the New York Yankees, leading it off will be catcher Rick Dempsey.
- 24:43And joining me in the broadcasting booth,
- 24:45Coro Rizzuto's favorite sportscaster at shortstop, the Scooter, Phil Rizzuto.
- 24:50All right, Spence, I see you put a couple more hundred miles on your flying time.
- 24:55Flying Spencer Ross.
- 24:57Here is Rick Dempsey and he hits one deep to right center.
- 25:01I couldn't know it was hanging up there.
- 25:03And Lascano is over there making the catch.
- 25:05Didn't have time to serve it.
- 25:07Didn't hear Spencer either, but Dempsey caught this kid Bill Travis in the Puerto Rican Witter League.
- 25:13And every one of his pitches and he claimed he was going to have a good day against him.
- 25:17And he did hit that ball well.
- 25:19But the wind is blowing from right field to left field.
- 25:22Strong wind and it held it up so it's one away.
- 25:25And young Bill Travis has retired the first seven Yankees.
- 25:29Here's Willie Randolph who takes the strike on the outside corner.
- 25:35Yankees got to get started.
- 25:37You get in a rut like this for a while where it's tough to get a base hit, base run to score one.
- 25:45Once you break out of it, things are good.
- 25:47But you get a little tight when you haven't scored.
- 25:49And there's strike two to Willie Randolph.
- 25:51There was shutout opening day here at the Yankees.
- 25:55And even though Billy Martin protested the game, Russ Getz said he didn't have a chance of winning it.
- 25:59Right, Spencer?
- 26:00That's right.
- 26:01You begin to think too much too when these things start happening.
- 26:03That's right.
- 26:04You tighten up a little more.
- 26:05You try a little harder instead of just relaxing and hitting that ball.
- 26:11One ball, two strikes on Willie Randolph.
- 26:13Travis winds and the pitch swing there with that fork ball.
- 26:16He swung over it.
- 26:17And that's the third strikeout.
- 26:19He's had one in each inning.
- 26:22Wow.
- 26:24Fred Stanley will be the batter.
- 26:25Fred did not play opening day.
- 26:29Well, we'd like to welcome Mr. R. David Ridgeway, WDOE Radio, from Dunkirk, New York.
- 26:36It's a very famous town.
- 26:37I have a lot of Yankee fans up there.
- 26:39That I know.
- 26:40It was the famous battle, too.
- 26:41But I'm talking about Dunkirk.
- 26:44I remember I've seen that in the movies many times.
- 26:49Also from Ellenville, Mr. Al Dresner from WELV Radio, Ellenville, New York.
- 26:57Next pitch to Stanley is inside and it's one-on-one.
- 27:01Glenfall, that's one of my favorite towns.
- 27:03I go through that when I go up to visit my daughter up in Vermont.
- 27:07All then on board, WBGA Radio.
- 27:11There's a foul back in the crowd, not a play.
- 27:14And Gloversville.
- 27:15Now, I have a very fond attachment to Gloversville.
- 27:17I used to be signed with a glove company from Gloversville, New York.
- 27:20Where else would a glove company be?
- 27:21That's right.
- 27:22That's what that town was named after.
- 27:24Mr. Larry Peck, WENT Radio.
- 27:27Gloversville, New York.
- 27:29High to Stanley and it's two and two.
- 27:32But you know how long ago that's been?
- 27:34Everybody connected with that firm has passed away.
- 27:37Now, nobody remembers me and I don't get any more gloves.
- 27:40What does a glove company do?
- 27:41I don't know.
- 27:42I guess they do, otherwise it would have changed the name of the town.
- 27:45You're right.
- 27:46High and it's three and two to Stanley.
- 27:48No score here in the top of the third inning.
- 27:52And we have been blessed with some very nice weather,
- 27:55although tomorrow might be a drastic change.
- 27:59I don't believe it, though.
- 28:00I don't either.
- 28:01It cannot snow tomorrow.
- 28:02Well, they say, you know, when you're on this lake, Lake Michigan, anything can happen.
- 28:08The ball is pitched to Fred Stanley.
- 28:10Outside ball four and the Yankees finally get a base runner.
- 28:13Travis had retired eight in a row.
- 28:16Stanley gets to walk and the batter will be Mickey Rivers.
- 28:19Rivers popped her first his first time up.
- 28:24Well, it's got to be sad news for a lot of Yankee fans
- 28:27and people who like to attend openers,
- 28:29knowing that it's a complete sellout and not a ticket available.
- 28:34In fact, the Yankees are asking people not to arrive at the ballpark that day,
- 28:37unless you have a ticket because it is a definite 100 percent sellout,
- 28:41but Saturday and Sunday.
- 28:43Yeah, they got time to get them in, right?
- 28:45All right, the pitch to Rivers, a curve breaks a little low, ball one.
- 28:50Yeah, some of the twins will still be in town,
- 28:52and there are tickets available for those games.
- 28:56Scooter, you worked on Rivers bunting, didn't you?
- 28:58Yep, but this is not a time to bunt.
- 29:01No.
- 29:02Pitch to Rivers popped up.
- 29:04Oh, he hit it pretty well in right field, shots moving back to the warning track.
- 29:08And make the catch, oh, he lost his hat.
- 29:10I thought he dropped the ball, his hat came off.
- 29:13Here I thought Rivers popped it up,
- 29:15and the ball went all the way to the warning track in deep right center.
- 29:18So for the Yankees, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 29:21The man left at the end of two and a half.
- 29:23Yankees, nothing in the Brewers, nothing.
- 29:27Festeros with Phil Rizzuto, Bill White and Frank Lester,
- 29:31and best wishes go out to Frank.
- 29:34You get back here to this broadcasting booth, Frank,
- 29:36who underwent an operation recovering,
- 29:39and he's going to be back here shortly, Scooter.
- 29:41We're all rooting for him to make it real quick.
- 29:43Okay, Spencer's very nice here.
- 29:47Charlie Moore, who struck out his first time up when fishing for a bad curve ball,
- 29:51facing Ed Figueroa for the second time.
- 29:55Kingston, New York, the home of Fred Davy.
- 29:57We'd like to welcome Mr. Joseph Shuler from WKNY Radio in Kingston, New York.
- 30:07Pitch is in there, strike one call to Charlie Moore.
- 30:11Figueroa has set Moore up with all breaking pitches the first time up.
- 30:15Came in with a fastball, looked like Moore was leaning, looking for the breaking pitch.
- 30:19The next pitch, there's one, again inside, and it's one-on-one.
- 30:23How about the way he low-bridged the big George Scott, Spencer?
- 30:26In fact, the back third.
- 30:28Wouldn't want to get that guy mad at me.
- 30:32One-one delivery is high ball two.
- 30:34He has not had good control of his fastball.
- 30:37His breaking pitch has been his best pitch so far early in this ball game,
- 30:40talking about Figueroa.
- 30:44Actually, he makes the game look easier than Catfish Hunter out there.
- 30:52What's the score?
- 30:53I'm a line drive, yeah.
- 30:56I got two-shores.
- 30:57On the ball, right.
- 30:58Okay.
- 30:59Don Money struck out his first time up.
- 31:01Foul's run back.
- 31:02That'll be out of play.
- 31:03Dempsey chasing it, but it's back into the seats well back.
- 31:08Right now, I'll pick Stanly who's ahead of Chambliss.
- 31:11Well, again, you've got to take into consideration,
- 31:14had that ball gotten by Chambliss, one and any,
- 31:18because the next guy singled after that, after two were out.
- 31:22Stanly's was the more difficult play, you're right.
- 31:25Except it hurt Chambliss a little more.
- 31:27Yeah.
- 31:28That had a smart.
- 31:29That was from wicked line drive.
- 31:32Pitch is on the inside corner.
- 31:340-2, and it looks like Figueroa is trying to pitch all the right-hand hitters inside.
- 31:40And of course, the good play has helped for the shape of the stars of the game.
- 31:46I think he's hardly had anybody worth a star opening day, Spencer.
- 31:51I know you gave the points out.
- 31:53I gave Oscar Gamble three points, Sparky Lyle one.
- 31:56That's about it.
- 31:57No fibers.
- 31:58No.
- 31:59Bouncer hitting the hole, nettles by him.
- 32:01Greg got to that ball, and it looked like it pulled him.
- 32:04He thought it was going to come up higher than it did, it went under his glove.
- 32:07And that'll go for a base hit.
- 32:10Well, that reminds me, and I was not a consideration on that particular play,
- 32:15but that infield, the grass, is very rocky.
- 32:18That meant it's an alibi because it does not take a bad hop on nettles.
- 32:22That is incredible.
- 32:23It is.
- 32:24Looks like they had that battle of Dunkirk right down there.
- 32:27Looks like Prospect Park.
- 32:29Hey, that was a good ball.
- 32:30Wait a minute.
- 32:31Diamond one was too mental.
- 32:32Sure.
- 32:33Here's George Scott, who walks, played many a game out there.
- 32:37Well, he's a good base runner.
- 32:38They have to watch him.
- 32:39Net the ball, hits deep to right field.
- 32:42And over there is Spinella near the line, near the wall.
- 32:44He can't get it, but it's a foul ball.
- 32:47Oh, man, that was close and missed by about six inches of being fair.
- 32:51It hit the base of the wall.
- 32:52Spinella got there.
- 32:53But the way the wall just out, Spencer, he didn't have an opportunity to go hard at it.
- 32:58And it was a difficult play also because if it just out, it also just in.
- 33:02And that wall hit Spinella a little quicker than I think he thought it was going to happen.
- 33:06And he bounced off it hard, but he seems to be okay.
- 33:09He could have gotten hurt badly had he been going full tilt.
- 33:13And he played it well.
- 33:14So it's just a long strike on George Scott.
- 33:16Money leads away.
- 33:18The kick and the pitch is a curve outside one-on-one.
- 33:30No score in the bottom of the third inning.
- 33:33Figure over to the belt.
- 33:34His pitch popped up on the right side.
- 33:36Chambliss going back, calling for it in fair territory.
- 33:39Chris makes the catch and air it two out.
- 33:43And that brings up Darrell Porter, who walked his first time up.
- 33:52Lev Cain comes through again with a very, very small assist from Jerry Kelly.
- 33:58He's just bringing Spencer Roth and either two hard workers a little sustenance.
- 34:05It's coffee, folks.
- 34:09I wonder if people are on the idea, too.
- 34:11All right.
- 34:13Left-hand batter Porter hits one high in the air to right.
- 34:15Didn't get a hold of it.
- 34:16Pennella should have no problem.
- 34:18In fair territory, Lew makes the catch.
- 34:22And that's out number three.
- 34:23No runs to hit.
- 34:24No errors.
- 34:25The man left at the end of three.
- 34:27It's the Yankees nothing and the Brewers nothing.
- 34:29Here at County Stadium in Milwaukee, the Brewers no runs through yet.
- 34:34No errors.
- 34:35And the Yankees still looking for their first base hit of the ballgame.
- 34:39So Travers has retired the first eight Yankees before Fred Stanley drew a walk in the third inning.
- 34:46Now Roy White is struck out swinging his first time up, 0-4 on the season, batting right against the left-handed pitching Travers.
- 34:55They play Roy just about straight away.
- 34:57The pitch bounced slowly past the mound.
- 35:00Scott has it.
- 35:01Travers over to cover.
- 35:02Not in time.
- 35:03White beats it out.
- 35:06Scott got the baseball, but Travers a little slow in getting over to first base as he thought he had an opportunity first at getting that baseball.
- 35:15And Roy White will get an infield single, the Yankees' first base hit of the ballgame.
- 35:21And it brings up designated hitter Thurman Munson.
- 35:25Munson bounced the short back in the first inning, 0-1, 0-5 on the season.
- 35:32Looks down to third base coach Dick Hauser.
- 35:37Four aside.
- 35:40Grave infield back at normal depth as Munson steps in.
- 35:50At this point, not looking for the butt.
- 35:53White leads away.
- 35:56Travers to the stretch, the pitch, fastball, in there, strike one.
- 36:05No balls, one strike to Thurman Munson.
- 36:08Again, peers down to Dick Hauser at third base for a side.
- 36:18White takes the short lead at first.
- 36:19Scott holding him on tight.
- 36:21Travers looks in for the side from Darrell Porter.
- 36:26And the 0-1 pitch.
- 36:27Line to the center field.
- 36:28Escoto on the run, makes the catch.
- 36:31White half-way, has to hustle back to first base, and there's one away.
- 36:36Escoto got a good jump on the baseball to retire Thurman Munson.
- 36:42And it brings up Chris Shambliss.
- 36:44Shambliss flied to center his first time up.
- 36:49Came up with a super defensive play back in the second inning,
- 36:53taking a double away from Bill Sharp and a hard hit line drive.
- 36:58Could have produced a big inning for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 37:00Instead, they wound up with zero.
- 37:05Shambliss a 300-hitter last year, super year for Chris.
- 37:08Day in, day out.
- 37:10First pitch, curve ball, breaks in, strike one.
- 37:19Twenty-three-year-old Bill Travers.
- 37:27Through the stretch, checks white, and the pitch, taking up high.
- 37:31Ball one, one and one.
- 37:36Travers won his first four decisions last season,
- 37:39and then lost seven in a row, wound up six and eleven on the year.
- 37:47Goes through the stretch, and the one-one pitch, there goes white.
- 37:51Porter's throw to second is low in the dirt, picked up by Garcia,
- 37:54but white is in there safely for the stolen base.
- 37:59Darrell Porter got the throw off, played nicely by Pedro Garcia on the short hop,
- 38:06and then white was in there with the steal.
- 38:10So the Yankees were there, first runner in scoring position of the afternoon.
- 38:15The pitch was appalled to Shambliss, the count goes two and one,
- 38:19and white now leading away from second.
- 38:23Score is ball game, top of the fourth.
- 38:28Travers through the stretch, checks the runner.
- 38:31Two-two pitch, swung on and missed, strike two.
- 38:44Travers throws that fork ball, no spin, to an extent similar to an uphill ball.
- 38:51Two-two pitch, swung on and missed in the curve, strike three.
- 38:57Travers gets Shambliss, his fourth strike out of the ball game,
- 39:00and it's up to Sweet Lou Pennella.
- 39:03Pennella bounced the short back in the second inning.
- 39:08In the lineup this afternoon with the left-hander Bill Travers on the mound,
- 39:13Thursday Oscar Gamble played right field with right-hander Jim Slayton pitching.
- 39:20Greg Nettles on the on-deck circle, and they are going to walk Lou Pennella intentionally
- 39:25to get the left-hander hitting Greg Nettles.
- 39:33Milwaukee manager Alex Grammis playing the percentages, count goes to two and oh now.
- 39:47It's the kind of situation that gets a batter with the power of a Greg Nettles,
- 39:52with his adrenaline flowing.
- 39:55You walk him to get to me, and I'm going to show you.
- 40:00So Nettles steps in, Yankees now with the runners at first and second
- 40:06as Pennella is given the intentional base on ball.
- 40:09First walk issued by Travers, two men out, two men on.
- 40:15Roy White leads from second, Lou Pennella from first,
- 40:19left-hander Bill Travers pitches, Nettles flings, bounces in the hole,
- 40:22Garcia over the high second base, hooks the on in time for the fourth play,
- 40:27and the side retires.
- 40:28Pedro Garcia taking a base hit away from Greg Nettles by going behind the bag
- 40:34at second to retire the side on the fourth, four to six,
- 40:38and the Yankees threat goes by the board.
- 40:40Four to York, no runs, one base hit, there were no Milwaukee errors,
- 40:45and the Yankees lead two to four through three and a half innings of play.
- 40:49The score, Yankees nothing and the Brewers nothing.

- 41:16through four and a half innings of play,

- 41:23Henry Aaron leads it off for the Milwaukee Brewers
- 41:26and takes the first pitch in their strike one call.
- 41:29Ed Figaro has given up three bases thus far,
- 41:34and Bill Travers just won and that an infield hit.
- 41:41Aaron bounced into a force play back in the first inning,
- 41:44with the runners at first and second and two men away.
- 41:47Lines it in the left field, that'll be in there for a base hit.
- 41:50White up for the ball, lost it back at his second base,
- 41:54and Henry Aaron onto the line, single to left,
- 41:56to lead it off for the Brewers here in the fourth inning.
- 42:00Aaron went two for three Thursday afternoon,
- 42:03and now another line smash to left field.
- 42:07He had been quoted as saying he was going to start punching the ball
- 42:12to right this year.
- 42:14After the game Thursday I spoke to him about it,
- 42:17and he said despite those two bases,
- 42:20he's looking forward to going to right field this year,
- 42:23hasn't done it yet.
- 42:25Nick Deloscano, the center fielder,
- 42:27with Aaron at first, nobody away.
- 42:29Deloscano, single to left his first time up,
- 42:33and the pitch swung on, bowed at the plate,
- 42:35off the chest protector of plate on fire George Maloney.
- 42:40Jimmy Bragan, the coach down at third base,
- 42:42Deloscano looking down the line, four aside.
- 42:47Henry Aaron leads away from first base.
- 42:49A leadoff single here on the bottom of the fourth.
- 42:53Scoreless ball game.
- 42:55Tigger over to the stretch, and the pitch outside,
- 42:58ball on the curve ball, one and one.
- 43:08Tigger on, gets the side, the stretch, the pitch outside,
- 43:14and the count goes two balls in one strike.
- 43:17They play Deloscano just about straight away.
- 43:22In field and double play depth.
- 43:27Scoreless ball game, bottom of the fourth.
- 43:29Scoreless ball game, bottom of the fourth.
- 43:31Two on pitch, line deep to center field.
- 43:34Rivers way back, one handed over the shoulder.
- 43:38Aaron more than halfway, scoops back to first base,
- 43:42and there is one man away.
- 43:45Deloscano with a wicked line drive to center,
- 43:48and Rivers goes back to put it away,
- 43:51and it'll bring up Bill Sharp.
- 43:53Cincinnati got three more in the bottom of the second.
- 43:56They now lead Houston by a score of 8-1 after two,
- 44:00and the Mets have taken the lead for Montreal,
- 44:02one-nothing now in the bottom of the fifth.
- 44:04Priming against Matlack at J. Stadium.
- 44:07Bill Sharp, pitch change up down low, ball one.
- 44:12Sharp, line to Chris Shambliss back in the second inning.
- 44:17Shambliss took a double away from him,
- 44:19and wound up doubling Deloscano off first base,
- 44:22ending a potential Milwaukee rally.
- 44:25We have one out in the bottom of the fourth.
- 44:27Henry Aaron leading off first.
- 44:29Siguroa goes to the stretch, and the pitch.
- 44:31Bounce to second, could be two.
- 44:33Randolph, the Stanley for one,
- 44:35and unable to get the throw off,
- 44:37as Aaron came into second.
- 44:39Just the fourth play, goes four to six.
- 44:43Randolph, the Stanley, and they're a two-man away.
- 44:46Sharp reaches on the fourth play.
- 44:49And shortstop Robin Young.
- 44:52The single to left his first time up.

- 45:01Sharp, the runner, leads away from first,
- 45:03and the throw over by Siguroa.
- 45:05Sharp back and side.
- 45:07...
- 45:15Siguroa, the stretch, and the pitch up,
- 45:17five-ball one.
- 45:20Sharp, not much of a threat to Steath.
- 45:23He has stolen only two bases in his major league career.
- 45:27That came back in 1973.
- 45:31One and 0 to count.
- 45:33The pitch to Young.
- 45:34Fastball, strike one.
- 45:36One ball, one strike for Robin Young.

- 45:43Yankees looking to break the shire
- 45:46to get their first run of the season.
- 45:49The pitch, that's the short,
- 45:51and we can't get it in the center field
- 45:53for the base hit.
- 45:54Rivers up with it, holding it second,
- 45:56taking a big turn.
- 45:57Here's Bill Sharp, the Brewers now
- 45:59with runners at first and second,
- 46:01two-man away.
- 46:02Here in the bottom of the fourth,
- 46:03and right here,
- 46:04let's ball for station identification.
- 46:05This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 46:09This is WMCA, Straus Communications in New York.
- 46:13Hi, this is Mel Allen.
- 46:15An air freight company has to know the ground rules, too.
- 46:18That's why you should call Emory.
- 46:20The shortest distance between two points.
- 46:23Pedro Garcia at the plate now for the Brewers.
- 46:27Milwaukee threatening in the bottom half
- 46:29of the fourth inning.
- 46:30The pitch, right, left field.
- 46:32It'll be in there for a base hit.
- 46:33Roundy Kirk coming out of the fourth shot.
- 46:35Digging for third is Scott.
- 46:37He's in there easily.

- 46:41And the Brewers lead it by a score of two to nothing.
- 46:44Second one to nothing.
- 46:52Yonk moving to third.

- 47:04The second he goes on the throw-in.
- 47:07And we go to the top of the order, Charlie Moore.

- 47:15More 0 for 2.
- 47:16Struck out swinging.
- 47:17Bounced to short.
- 47:18Pitch taken up by ball one.
- 47:21But Stanley took the base hit away from him in the third inning,
- 47:24going far to his left to throw him out.
- 47:29Brewers with three base hits in this inning.
- 47:31Six in the ball game.
- 47:331-0 pitch.
- 47:34Fastball.
- 47:35Right one to Charlie Moore.
- 47:39Robin Yonk down to third.
- 47:41Pedro Garcia at second.
- 47:46Milwaukee has gotten on the board.
- 47:47They lead it one nothing.
- 47:51Ed Figueroa gets the side from Rick Dempsey.
- 47:54The pitch, fastball outside.
- 47:56Ball two.
- 47:57Two balls, one strike.
- 47:59To Charlie Moore with third baseman Don Money on deck.
- 48:04They play Moore to pull the ball.
- 48:07Pretty good power.
- 48:102-1-6.
- 48:11One-nine foul at the plate.
- 48:13Strike two for the county even.
- 48:14Two balls, two strikes to Charlie Moore.
- 48:18Plate on fire, George Maloney goes out, dusts off on plate.
- 48:23Ed Figueroa steps out behind the mound, rubs up the baseball.
- 48:27Now comes back.
- 48:28Just the cap on his head.
- 48:32Looks around, he got it third.
- 48:34He'll go to the full windup.
- 48:36Robin leads off third.
- 48:38Pedro Garcia from second.
- 48:40Two-two pitch coming.
- 48:42To Charlie Moore.
- 48:44Now Moore steps out.
- 48:46Figueroa taking a great deal of time.
- 48:52Brewer's lead one nothing.
- 48:55Pedro Garcia single just moments ago.
- 48:59And the two-two pitch coming.
- 49:01Full windup.
- 49:02Page up a five-ball three.
- 49:04Three balls, two strikes.
- 49:07To Charlie Moore.
- 49:11Figueroa has for a new baseball.
- 49:14Now he wants another one.
- 49:17And that's that aside with this one.
- 49:19And plate on fire, George Maloney throws him yet another ball.
- 49:25Aaron let it off with a single.
- 49:28There's still a runaround first with just two men away.
- 49:31Then Yacht single to left.
- 49:32And Darcy goes home the game's first row with a line single to left field.

- 49:44The pitch taken up by ball four.
- 49:46And the Brewers have loaded the bases.
- 49:51Third base on balls issued by Ed Figueroa.
- 49:55And it brings up Don Money.
- 50:00Money's one for two.
- 50:02Took a tall third strike back in the first inning then single to left.
- 50:06Brewers have six bases to the Yankees one.
- 50:10Yacht leads from third.
- 50:11Garcia from second.
- 50:15And the pitch up high for a ball.
- 50:25Bases full of Brewers.
- 50:32Figueroa.
- 50:33Around comes the right arm of the pitch inside ball two.
- 50:36Rick Densley now calls time out to go out and talk with that Figueroa.
- 50:41Figueroa had some control problems back in the first inning.
- 50:44After striking out Moore and Money, he walked George Scott and Darrell Porter.
- 50:49And regained his control and until walking Moore just moments ago.
- 50:54He had not issued another pass.
- 50:57Now Depthi finished with his conversation.
- 50:59Moved back behind the plate.
- 51:00Robin Yacht leads off third.
- 51:02Pedro Garcia from second.
- 51:04Charlie Moore from third.
- 51:06Brewers have a run in here at the bottom of the fourth.
- 51:09And Ed Figueroa trying to work himself out of this jam.
- 51:12Around comes the right arm of the pitch.
- 51:14In there strike one.
- 51:15Goal.
- 51:18Two and one.
- 51:22Figueroa stands on the mound.
- 51:25Now looks out toward the outfield for a moment.
- 51:28Now looks in for the side from Rick Depthi.
- 51:31The two on pitch.
- 51:32Coming to down Money.
- 51:33Swings.
- 51:34Bounces at the third.
- 51:35Nettles backs up.
- 51:36Bakes the play.
- 51:37Dives to third and he gets the runner.
- 51:39Pedro Garcia coming in.
- 51:41Super play by Nettles.
- 51:42Saw he could not run to third.
- 51:44And beat Garcia with a tag.
- 51:46And instead Nettles slid into third base.
- 51:49And just beat Garcia by half a stride to retire the side.
- 51:53The four of the Brewers in the fourth inning.
- 51:55They come up with one run on three bases.
- 51:57There were no Yankees errors.
- 51:59And the bases were loaded.
- 52:00Three left on.
- 52:01So through four.
- 52:02The score now.
- 52:03The Brewers won and the Yankees nothing.

- 52:43Fly to center his first time up.
- 52:46Pitched by Travers.
- 52:48Curve ball breaks in.
- 52:51Inside that is.
- 52:52And the count goes to it all.

- 53:00With Herman Munson unable to play behind the plate.
- 53:03Lines the ball.
- 53:04Hits the right field on the run.
- 53:06A sharp one.
- 53:07Hands it over his head.
- 53:09Now Dempsey was saying after having played in the Winter Leagues with Travers.
- 53:13He can hit this guy.
- 53:14And he sure has sucked the ball two consecutive times.
- 53:17But right at fielders.
- 53:19The first time to Liscano and this time Bill Sharp making a long run to put it away.
- 53:25So there's one man away and it's up to Willie Randolph.

- 54:47Moore comes in and puts it away.
- 54:49Again right on the money.
- 54:51Randolph hitting the baseball but right at Charlie Moore.
- 54:54And there are two outs.
- 54:56Fred Stanley.
- 54:59He became the Yankees' first base runner in the third inning after Travers had retired the first eight Yankees to come to the plate.

- 55:56The first part hit one.
- 55:57A line single to right.
- 56:00And it brings up Mickey Rivers.
- 56:02Stanley with a perfect day thus far, a walk and a single.
- 56:07Yankees have hit a lot of hard outs.
- 56:10Right at Milwaukee fielder, Rick Dempsey.
- 56:15On two occasions, Willie Randolph with a line shot to Charlie Moore.
- 56:21Mickey Rivers at the plate.
- 56:23Stanley leads away from first.
- 56:24Travers to the stretch.

- 56:31They play Rivers straight away.
- 56:33Second baseman, Pedro Garcia, back on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 56:37Any little kind of bouncer over Travers.
- 56:40No way Garcia's going to get Mickey Rivers, who Travers now throws over to first.
- 56:45Stanley back easily.
- 56:52Don Money shortening up on the infield grass down the third baseline.
- 56:56One-and-oh pitch to Rivers.

- 57:15The Brewers won, the Yankees nothing.
- 57:17Bottom of the fifth.
- 57:18Takes the first pitch for Matt Figueroa in their strike one.

- 58:18with back to back singles.
- 58:21Runners on first and second and nobody out.

- 58:34Aaron, 1 for 2.
- 58:36Bounced into a fourth play.

- 1:00:04Strike one.
- 1:00:07Soloscano is only 22 years of age.
- 1:00:10His 247 last season, 333 against the Yankees.
- 1:00:15This is a young ball club.
- 1:00:18First man at first base by baseball standards.
- 1:00:21Not too young, but young at heart.
- 1:00:23Henry Aaron.
- 1:00:24Strike two called out of Soloscano.
- 1:00:27Who asked home plate umpire George Maloney.
- 1:00:31So please have a look at the baseball.
- 1:00:34Maloney exchanges it.

- 1:04:16There was one Yankee error.
- 1:04:17That's by second baseman Willie Randolph.
- 1:04:20And the Brewers leave one.
- 1:04:21It's a five complete inning.

- 1:04:43Turning colder tonight with a low in the 30s and maybe some thundershowers.
- 1:04:48Tomorrow partly sunny.
- 1:04:49That's good news.
- 1:04:50Now the Yankees need a few runs.
- 1:04:51Roy White leads it off here in the sixth inning against Bill Travers, who has given up only

- 1:05:02Bounce foul at the plate.
- 1:05:04Count goes even one and one.
- 1:05:06Bounce one over Travers to the right side of the mound.
- 1:05:11George Scott made the fielding play, but Travers just a shade late in getting over to cover,

- 1:06:05Yanks looking to get something going here in the sixth inning against left-hander Bill Travers,
- 1:06:11a 23-year-old who once sixth lost 11 last year for Milwaukee.
- 1:06:17White leading away from first.
- 1:06:20They play Munson straight away and deep.
- 1:06:22Thurman hits it to all fields and with power.
- 1:06:26And the pitch, up high, ball one.
- 1:06:36Munson coming off his best season in the Major League.

- 1:07:15He stumbles momentarily, and the ball hits inside the railing, but no play.
- 1:07:21Scott with a good run.
- 1:07:23And it came mighty close.
- 1:07:26Finest fielding first baseman in the American League.
- 1:07:29Five times consecutively the American League's Golden Glove Award winner,
- 1:07:35overall seven times in his career.
- 1:07:40Munson steps out now.
- 1:07:46With Roy White leading away from first, he's being held on by George Scott.
- 1:07:51The count is two and one.
- 1:07:54Travers to the stretch.
- 1:07:57And the two-one pitch lined in the center field.
- 1:08:00Sixth to Lescano, however, comes on and makes the play.
- 1:08:04White halfway, moves back to first.

- 1:08:09He'll bring up Chris Shamblin.
- 1:08:11Yankee first baseman is 0 for two.
- 1:08:13Flied to center, struck out swinging.
- 1:08:17Travers began this ballgame by getting the first eight Yankees and gave up a walk to Fred Stanley.
- 1:08:23It was an infield hit in the fourth inning and an intentional walk to Lou Pennella.
- 1:08:30Singles by Stanley and another base hit by White here in the sixth.
- 1:08:35First pitch to Shamblin's hit into left center field.
- 1:08:38Lescano moves over.
- 1:08:39Moore waves him off the left fielder, and he puts it away.
- 1:08:42And there are two men away.
- 1:08:46And it'll bring up Lou Pennella.
- 1:08:51Sweet Lou bounced his short and then was walked intentionally back in the fourth inning.
- 1:08:57Greg Nettles became the batter and bounced one in the hole right beyond second base.
- 1:09:03Pedro Garcia made a good play to get the fourth play, Garcia to Yan.
- 1:09:13White leads away, pitch lined in a center field, base hit.
- 1:09:17White hits second, doesn't take the turn, as Lescano throws it back into the infield,
- 1:09:22and the Yankees now with a tying run at the plate in the person of Greg Nettles.
- 1:09:28As White moves down to second, Nettles is 0 for two, struck out swinging, bounced into that fourth play.
- 1:09:37Pennella fourth inning, Garcia to Yan, which retired the side.
- 1:09:43And Greg coming off a 91 RBI season, looking for number one here.

- 1:10:34And the 2-0 pitch coming, high and inside, ball three.
- 1:10:39So Travers falls behind on Nettles, who represents the tying run at the plate,
- 1:10:46and catcher Darrell Porter now moves out to have a chat with the 23-year-old left fielder, who hails from Norwood, Massachusetts.
- 1:10:59And he's a big fella, 6'4", 187 pounds.
- 1:11:09Conversation ended on the mound, Porter returns back behind the plate.
- 1:11:15The young boy, White, resumes his lead off second, blue Pennella, leads away from first.
- 1:11:23They play Nettles to pull.
- 1:11:26And the pitch, in there, strike one, 3-1 to Greg Nettles.
- 1:11:31Right side of the infield, playing back just about on the grass.
- 1:11:35Garcia on the grass, got a couple of strides in.
- 1:11:39The outfield grass, that is.
- 1:11:423-1 pitch to Nettles, taking down low, ball four.
- 1:11:45The Yankees have loaded the bases, and it'll be up to Rick Dempsey.
- 1:11:50Now Dempsey has hit the ball well on all two occasions against Bill Travers.
- 1:11:56They played together in the Puerto Rican League during the winter, and Rick is being called back.
- 1:12:08He just went out to get some pintar, as Alex Gramitz goes to the mound, and that's going to be it for Bill Travers.
- 1:12:16It's one visit to the mound, and Gramitz making up his mind very quickly.
- 1:12:21So we'll have a new pitcher in there for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:12:25The new pitcher is now making his way to the mound.
- 1:12:48We're at the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:12:49The Yankees are threatening.
- 1:12:51They have the bases loaded.
- 1:12:53There are two men out, and Milwaukee has come on with a new pitcher.
- 1:13:01And it's going to be Ed Rodriguez.
- 1:13:07Replacing Bill Travers, who pitched excellent baseball, Travers gets credit for six and two-thirds innings, gave a four-base hit.
- 1:13:17He walked two, struck out four, is responsible for all three men on base.
- 1:13:24And Ed Rodriguez will come on to pitch.
- 1:13:28Rodriguez, a right-handed thrower, appeared in 43 games for the Brewers last year, was undefeated 7-0.
- 1:13:39Travers is pitching it up to get credit for this ballgame if the Brewers can win it.

- 1:15:23It is Roy White.
- 1:15:24Lou Pennella is at second.
- 1:15:26Greg Nettles is at first.
- 1:15:27And it's up to Rick Dempsey.
- 1:15:30And Dempsey hit that baseball hard against Travers both times.
- 1:15:34Now he has to go against Rodriguez.
- 1:15:37He had an earned run average of 3.49 last season.
- 1:15:42He's a right-handed thrower.
- 1:15:45Looks in for the side from Porter.
- 1:15:47Goes to the full lineup and the pitch.
- 1:15:49Up high ball one.

- 1:16:51A threat by the Yankees.
- 1:16:53Goes by the board.
- 1:16:54Four New York.
- 1:16:55No runs.
- 1:16:56They had two base hits.
- 1:16:57There were no Brewer errors.

- 1:17:01Through five and a half innings of play.
- 1:17:03The score.
- 1:17:04The Brewers three and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:17:08Well the Yankees with a threat.
- 1:17:10But nothing on the board.

- 1:17:32Garcia one for two in the ball game.
- 1:17:35Popped to Dempsey.
- 1:17:37And single to left.
- 1:17:38To drive home the Brewers first run of the ball game.
- 1:17:40That was back in the fourth inning.
- 1:17:42And a big gust of wind.
- 1:17:44Blowing up the dirt right around home plate.
- 1:17:46And Garcia steps out.
- 1:17:48Fortunately for Garcia he's a right handed hitter.
- 1:17:50And even a left handed hitter.
- 1:17:52That just would have flown right into his face.
- 1:17:55One and oh pitch.
- 1:17:56Bounced to third.
- 1:17:57Nettles backs up. Pops off his glove.
- 1:18:00And Garcia's in it first.
- 1:18:03And will await the official score's ruling on this one.
- 1:18:07Nettles backing up on the ground ball.
- 1:18:12And Garcia is on safely.
- 1:18:15A lead off batter for the Brewers here in the sixth inning.
- 1:18:20And it'll be an error.
- 1:18:21Charge to Greg Nettles according to the official score.
- 1:18:24And it brings up Charlie Moore, the left fielder.
- 1:18:27Moore's over two.
- 1:18:28Struck out swinging.
- 1:18:30Bounced to short.
- 1:18:31A great play by Fred Stanley to take a base hit away from.
- 1:18:34And then he walked.
- 1:18:36Garcia leads away from first.
- 1:18:38And Figueroa throws over.
- 1:18:40Garcia back safely.
- 1:18:49To the stretch once again.
- 1:18:52And the pitch, busted on.
- 1:18:54Figueroa has nowhere to go but the first.
- 1:18:56Randolph covers the sacrifice.
- 1:18:58Works successfully for the Brewers.
- 1:19:01As Garcia moves down to second.
- 1:19:03On the sacrifice if you're scoring.
- 1:19:05It goes one to four.
- 1:19:09And Garcia moves in the scoring position.
- 1:19:12And it'll bring up Don Money in the third baseman.
- 1:19:18Money's one for three.
- 1:19:19Second call, third strike back in the first inning, single to left.
- 1:19:24And grounded out to Greg Nettles.
- 1:19:27A force play as he touched third base.
- 1:19:31The retired Garcia was.
- 1:19:37One for three in the first pitch.
- 1:19:39Tinkerball down low, ball one.
- 1:19:46One ball, another strike to Don Money.
- 1:19:49We're in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:19:50The Anks are trailing three nothing.
- 1:19:54They play Money deep in left and toward the line.
- 1:19:57Playing the full of baseball.
- 1:19:59Now Figueroa steps off the mound.
- 1:20:02Seems to be pointing back to the mound.
- 1:20:04Remember Thursday Yankee manager Billy Martin protested the ball game.
- 1:20:10Due to what he considered to be poor conditions on the mound.
- 1:20:15He's filing a protest with American League president Lee McPhail.
- 1:20:20Now Figueroa's ready.
- 1:20:23Garcia leads from second.
- 1:20:25There's one out.
- 1:20:26We're in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:20:27Figueroa to the stretch for pitch fastball.
- 1:20:30In there, strike one call.
- 1:20:32One and one.
- 1:20:37Nettles down the line at third.
- 1:20:40Five or six strides off the power.
- 1:20:47Figueroa goes to the stretch.
- 1:20:49Checks Garcia and the pitch.
- 1:20:51Bounce to short.
- 1:20:52Stanley with a hole in his left.
- 1:20:53Loves it.
- 1:20:54Comes up, has no play to make.
- 1:20:56But he saves the run from Seurich.
- 1:20:59Brett Stanley gets that ball from going to the outfield.
- 1:21:03And Garcia advances wholly to third base.
- 1:21:06That had gotten by Stanley.
- 1:21:07It would have been a four nothing ball game.
- 1:21:09An infield hit for Don Money.
- 1:21:17So Garcia over to third.
- 1:21:19Money out at first.
- 1:21:20And big George Scott to the plate.
- 1:21:23He's one for two.
- 1:21:24Walks.
- 1:21:25Pops the first.
- 1:21:26Single the left and scored a run.
- 1:21:28Brewers now at ten bases off that Figueroa.
- 1:21:32Still activity in the Yankee both end.
- 1:21:34Dick Tidro and Tippi Martinez continue to work.
- 1:21:40Figueroa's pitch.
- 1:21:41Swung on.
- 1:21:42Fouled at the plate.
- 1:21:43Strike one.
- 1:21:44Right off George Scott's left foot.
- 1:21:46He is shaking it around a bit.
- 1:21:52Very spring training.
- 1:21:53Senator Alex Gramis is telling me that Bobby Darwin hit with about 450 feet to center field over a big high wall.
- 1:22:01Gramis said to George Scott, let me see you hit one like that.
- 1:22:05You see the altitude.
- 1:22:07Scott's comment was, I don't worry about altitude.
- 1:22:10I got enough altitude.
- 1:22:12And I can hit them as far as anybody.
- 1:22:15He sure can.
- 1:22:16Thirty-six homers last season.
- 1:22:18The O-1 pitch coming now from Figueroa.
- 1:22:22Up high.
- 1:22:23Ball one.
- 1:22:24One and one.
- 1:22:25Let the American League and RBI's with 109.
- 1:22:43One-one pitch coming.
- 1:22:44Figueroa goes to the stretch.
- 1:22:46The pitch up high.
- 1:22:47Ball two.
- 1:22:49The sun begins to come out once again here in the Waukesha County Stadium.
- 1:22:53Two and one.
- 1:23:04The Brewers got one run in inning number four.
- 1:23:07Pedro Garcia singled it all.
- 1:23:10Henry Aaron.
- 1:23:12And Joel Foam, yet another one in inning number five for Milwaukee.
- 1:23:22Figueroa to the stretch.
- 1:23:23And the pitch.
- 1:23:24Right center field.
- 1:23:26Could be up the alley.
- 1:23:27Garcia scores.
- 1:23:28The ball goes all the way to the wall.
- 1:23:30Harding's gonna score.
- 1:23:53And Yankee manager Billy Martin has gone out to the mound and he is gonna remove that Figueroa
- 1:24:07from the ball game.
- 1:24:08As the Brewers have come up with two more runs here in the sixth inning and they now
- 1:24:13lead it by a score of five to nothing.
- 1:24:17Garcia scoring from third, Don Money scoring all the way from first on George Scott's big
- 1:24:25triple.
- 1:24:26And the Brewers with a 5-0 lead.
- 1:24:33Scorless ball game through three.
- 1:24:35The Yankees got one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and now the Brewers that is,
- 1:24:39one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and two more here in the sixth.
- 1:24:44And that closes the book on Ed Figueroa.
- 1:24:48Who officially pitches five and two thirds innings and gives up 11 base hits.
- 1:24:56He walked three and he struck out by two.
- 1:25:01Opening day Thursday against the Minnesota Twins.

- 1:26:57Martinez 25 years of age from Mahuta, Colorado.
- 1:27:03That's where he still lives.
- 1:27:05First pitch to Darrell Porter. Swung away at the plate. Foul. Strike one.
- 1:27:11George Scott leading away from third.

- 1:27:22Swung on and missed. Strike two, 0-2.
- 1:27:27A shortened up Yankee infield with Nettle, Stanley, Randolph, and Shamblin.
- 1:27:34Virtually in on the infield grass with just one out.
- 1:27:38And the pitch. Strike three. Call.
- 1:27:42So three straight pitches.
- 1:27:44And Zippy Martinez gets Darrell Porter.
- 1:27:48And here is Henry Aaron.
- 1:27:59Aaron's two for three.
- 1:28:01Mastinor force play.

- 1:28:12Who faces just one batter.
- 1:28:14And we'll get the right hander in here now for the Yankees.
- 1:28:17Believe it will be Dick Tidro.
- 1:28:26Martin does not want any more runs to cross the plate.
- 1:28:29Yankees still with three opportunities to get on the board.
- 1:28:33Against these Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:28:37And the runner at third, George Scott.
- 1:28:40Still the responsibility of Yankee starting pitcher Ed Figueroa.
- 1:28:44Checking the scoreboard. They've gone to the bottom of the eighth now at Baltimore.

- 1:30:09He was two for three Thursday afternoon.
- 1:30:12And the pitch hit down the left field line foul up into the upper deck.
- 1:30:16So the count goes one and one.
- 1:30:23Bill Travers started for the Brewers.
- 1:30:26They shut out baseball until the sixth.
- 1:30:28The Yanks loaded the bases.
- 1:30:30Rodriguez came on to retire the side.
- 1:30:32One-one-fifth to Aaron.
- 1:30:33Fast ball down low, ball two.
- 1:30:39Center fielder Mickey Rivers shaded to the left, looking for Henry to pull that baseball.
- 1:30:43A lot of room down that right field line.
- 1:30:46Two balls, one strike to Henry.
- 1:30:48Fast ball, strike two, call.
- 1:30:53Aaron has been saying he's going to start punching to right.
- 1:31:00And Tidro going to the stretch.
- 1:31:03Scott with a short lead at third.

- 1:31:07Three and two to Henry Aaron with six to Los Canos on deck for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:31:13Yankees trail by a score of five-nothing here on the bottom half of inning number six.
- 1:31:19And the full count pitch taken down low, ball four.
- 1:31:23So Aaron walks and it'll bring up six to Los Canos.
- 1:31:31As the Brewers keep it going.
- 1:31:33Los Canos single to left, line to center.
- 1:31:37That's an all-force play.
- 1:31:39The Brewers took advantage of that also as the runs scored.
- 1:31:43Second baseman Willie Randolph throwing high, the first to pick up the error.
- 1:31:49Shamblitt's unable to control the throw.

- 1:32:22He drove at Figueroa from the ball game with a two-run triple.
- 1:32:26Tippi Martinez came on to strike out Darrell Porter.
- 1:32:29And now Tidro is on.
- 1:32:31The pitch in there, strike two.
- 1:32:33One and two to Los Canos.
- 1:32:37Tidro walked Aaron.
- 1:32:39And now he's ahead of Los Canos.
- 1:32:43And the one-two pitch.
- 1:32:44Right, left field.
- 1:32:45Roy White comes in.
- 1:32:46Cannot get it.
- 1:32:47Blades it on about.
- 1:32:48Scott scores.
- 1:32:49Aaron holds it second at the six-nothing ball game.
- 1:32:56So the Brewers continue to hit the baseball.

- 1:33:04And it'll bring out Billy Sharp, the right fielder.
- 1:33:07Sharp is 0 for 3.

- 1:33:22Left-handed hitter.
- 1:33:24Sharp 1 for 3 yesterday.
- 1:33:26So 1 for 6 thus far in this series.
- 1:33:30Getaway day tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:33:32The Yankees and the Brewers.
- 1:33:35And the 1-0 pitch down low.

- 1:33:52To Bill Sharp.
- 1:33:53And the pitch.
- 1:33:54Bounce to second.
- 1:33:55Two hops.
- 1:33:56Randolph loves it.
- 1:33:57Goes on to Shambliss.
- 1:33:58The side retires.
- 1:34:00But not before eight Brewers come to the plate.
- 1:34:02Milwaukee picks up three runs.
- 1:34:05There were three base sets.
- 1:34:07There was one Yankee error.
- 1:34:09And two men left on base.
- 1:34:11So through six innings of play, the score of the Brewers 6 and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:34:22Censor off for Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto, and Bill White.
- 1:34:25We've gone six Yankees trailing by a score of 6 to nothing.
- 1:34:29And joining me in the broadcasting booth right now,
- 1:34:31Bill White.
- 1:34:33Bill, leave a couple of runs.
- 1:34:35Yes, they do, Spencer.
- 1:34:36And Willie Randolph will try to get something started here in the top of the seventh.
- 1:34:40Yankees down six nothing to the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:34:43Willie Randolph is in.
- 1:34:44He's struck out.
- 1:34:45He's lying to left field.
- 1:34:46He's 0 for two.
- 1:34:47The pitch to him is a little bit high of all.
- 1:34:49Ed Rodriguez, who came on last inning in relief of Bill Travers in there now,
- 1:34:53against Willie Randolph.
- 1:34:58The pitch is in a called strike.
- 1:35:02And the Brewers have made a defensive change.
- 1:35:04Gorman Thomas out in center field moving six stole less, can't hold it left.
- 1:35:08Down low the next pitch, and it skips pass porter.
- 1:35:12And it's two balls and a strike on Randolph.
- 1:35:18We'll have Randolph, Fred Stanley, and Mickey Rivers for the Yankees
- 1:35:22against Ed Rodriguez.
- 1:35:24Check swing is high, it's three and one now on Willie Randolph.
- 1:35:33We've got a pitcher, it looks like, on deck to bat for Fred Stanley, Spencer.
- 1:35:39High ball for Randolph walks.
- 1:35:42And Oscar Gamble will bat for Fred Stanley.
- 1:35:49Alex Gramis didn't waste much time pulling Bill Travers out of the ball game
- 1:35:52the way Dempsey was hitting the baseball again.
- 1:35:54Well, not only that, you know, Gramis was third base coach for Sparky Anderson
- 1:35:59over at Cincinnati.
- 1:36:00And Sparky Anderson didn't let his starting pitcher stay around too long either,
- 1:36:04so he probably picked that up from Sparky.
- 1:36:06He wants a fresh arm in there all the time.
- 1:36:11Here's Gamble, he picked up a couple of hits in the opener on Thursday.
- 1:36:15The set now by Rodriguez and the pitch, the check swing is down low ball.
- 1:36:19Scott playing behind Randolph at first base.
- 1:36:23With the top of the seventh, the Brewers lead the Yankees six to nothing.
- 1:36:26Randolph at first base, no outs.
- 1:36:30Now the set, the check of the runner, and the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:36:33It's in there on the outside corner called strike one ball and one strike on Oscar Gamble.
- 1:36:38They're playing Gamble straight away in the outfield.
- 1:36:40Infield back looking for two, that's Money at third, Yonk the shortstop.
- 1:36:45Garcia at second, Scott playing behind Randolph at first.
- 1:36:49The next delivery, too high this time, two and one.
- 1:36:56Brewers have six runs on 12 hits, the Yankees no runs on four.
- 1:37:02Now the set, and the two-one delivery.
- 1:37:05Swung on and missed, it's two balls and two strikes on Gamble.
- 1:37:12Alex Grams was telling me he was happy to see Gamble get that haircut because he couldn't understand how a helmet could help him on his head prior to this.
- 1:37:22Here's the two-two pitch.
- 1:37:24Swung on, bounced forward first, off the glove of Scott out of the right field.
- 1:37:27Around second base and going to third is Randolph and going into second base standing up is Oscar Gamble and the Yankees have a little life here in the top of the seventh.
- 1:37:36Give Gamble a double.
- 1:37:37Let's take 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee Home of Champions Radio Network.
- 1:37:43WMCA, soft communications in New York.
- 1:37:48I'm the on-going.
- 1:37:49Text me on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 4 p.m. until 8.
- 1:37:52And we'd like to say hello to Mr. Adrian Frazier, General Manager of WMCA Radio in Mustena, New York.
- 1:38:04WMSA in Mustena.
- 1:38:11MCA, that's our top station, right?
- 1:38:14So hi to Adrian Frazier.
- 1:38:16Hope you all appear and join Yankee baseball.
- 1:38:19Of course, that double by Gamble will make you enjoy it a little bit more.
- 1:38:22We have runners at second and third, nobody out.
- 1:38:24Here's Mickey Rivers.
- 1:38:25He's popped up, flying out and bouncing to a four-side.
- 1:38:28Brewers have their infield back except for the third baseman, Don Money.
- 1:38:32He's weighing on the grass as Rodriguez sets.
- 1:38:35The pitch is swung on a bit.
- 1:38:38We're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:38:40The Brewers lead the Yankees six to nothing.
- 1:38:42Yankees have runners at second and third, nobody out.
- 1:38:45On deck is Roy White.
- 1:38:50Rodriguez taking a lot of time.
- 1:38:52Now he looks in his quarter.
- 1:38:54Doesn't like the sign.
- 1:38:56Still looking.
- 1:38:57Shakes another one off.
- 1:38:59Now he sets.
- 1:39:01And the one-strike pitch.
- 1:39:02Swung on it on the ground a second.
- 1:39:04A runner scored.
- 1:39:05Garcia digs it up.
- 1:39:06Goes on the first base.
- 1:39:07Rivers is out.
- 1:39:08But Randolph scores.
- 1:39:10Gamble goes on the third base and the Yankees get on the board for the first time in, let's see, 16 innings.
- 1:39:19So it's 6-1 Brewers now.
- 1:39:21Gamble at third base and the batter is Roy White.
- 1:39:24You know, a lot of times, Spencer, once you get that first run, the floodgates seem to open and everything's easy from then on in.
- 1:39:29So when I was talking about that, you begin to think, am I ever going to get one?
- 1:39:34And the Yankees were wondering a little bit.
- 1:39:36They're on the board now.
- 1:39:38And the pitcher White is in there for a called strike.
- 1:39:40Gamble down at third base.
- 1:39:41Infield back once again.
- 1:39:42Money the third baseman, though, is even at third base.
- 1:39:44Outfield straight away.
- 1:39:46The next delivery to White.
- 1:39:49Called strike to a good breaking ball.
- 1:39:51Knee high on the inside corner.
- 1:39:52White is struck out.
- 1:39:54He's got an infield in.
- 1:39:55He's stolen the base.
- 1:39:56Knee single to left field.
- 1:39:57So he's two for three.
- 1:39:59He has two of the Yankees' five base hits.
- 1:40:03Here's a wind.
- 1:40:04And the two-strike pitch.
- 1:40:06Breaking ball.
- 1:40:07Luke to right field.
- 1:40:08That's going to be in for a base hit.
- 1:40:09Gamble will score easily.
- 1:40:10And White will hold at first base.
- 1:40:13And the Brewers now lead the Yankees six to two.
- 1:40:17And beginning to happen.
- 1:40:19Bill, correcting this assumption, when you're going well, you grab the bat and say, let me get up there and hit.
- 1:40:26When you're not going well, you grab the bat and you say, wait a second.
- 1:40:30What's he going to throw at me now?
- 1:40:32Yeah.
- 1:40:33A little hesitant.
- 1:40:35Here's Munson.
- 1:40:36Thurman looking for his first base hit.
- 1:40:38He's over seven.
- 1:40:39So far, he was over four on the opener.
- 1:40:41He's bounced to short.
- 1:40:42Flied to third field twice here in the second game.
- 1:40:45What's my mean opener?
- 1:40:46When I say opener, I mean the opener back on Thursday.
- 1:40:50Pitch to Thurman.
- 1:40:51Too high a ball.
- 1:40:52Backs him out of there.
- 1:40:58White at first base with one out.
- 1:41:01Top half of the seventh inning.
- 1:41:03Yankees scored twice here in the seventh.
- 1:41:05But the Brewers lead at six to two.
- 1:41:07Now Munson wants to look at the baseball.
- 1:41:09And George Maloney will throw it out.
- 1:41:15Brewer Enfield back looking for two with Scott holding on White.
- 1:41:20Now they're set by Rodriguez.
- 1:41:22And the one-oh pitch to Munson.
- 1:41:24Swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 1:41:27And it's a ball on the strike.
- 1:41:36See, Boston leading Baltimore one to nothing,
- 1:41:38but they've used a couple of pitchers in that eighth inning.
- 1:41:42Rick Wise started.
- 1:41:44House came on.
- 1:41:46Now they've got another pitcher in there.
- 1:41:48One-one pitch to Munson.
- 1:41:50Hit deep to left.
- 1:41:51More going back.
- 1:41:52That ball is out of here.
- 1:41:54Home run for Thurman Munson.
- 1:41:56And the Brewers now lead six to four.
- 1:41:58A two-run home run for Thurman Munson.
- 1:42:03And that's his first base hit of the year.
- 1:42:06A Getty Round Tripper for Thurman Munson.
- 1:42:08A drive over the 362-foot marker in left field.
- 1:42:13And for his Getty Round Tripper,
- 1:42:15Thurman Munson receives Getty gift certificate.
- 1:42:17Good towards the purchase of Getty premiums.
- 1:42:20The gasoline that, according to a recent survey,
- 1:42:23sells from two to two and a half cents less per gallon
- 1:42:26than most other major premiums.
- 1:42:28Getty's got what's best for your car.
- 1:42:31And that may be all.
- 1:42:33It's going to be all for Ed Rodriguez,
- 1:42:37who comes up with a rather inauspicious debut in this 1976 season.
- 1:42:41The Yankees right back in the ball game.
- 1:42:44A two-run homer by Thurman Munson.
- 1:42:49First base hit of the year.
- 1:42:52So Thurman Munson getting a fastball
- 1:42:59and driving it deep into the seats in left field.
- 1:43:02Of course, that wind's blowing out that way.
- 1:43:04The left fielder, 6-0 Lescano, started back,
- 1:43:06but he had no chance at all
- 1:43:08as it went about ten rows back over the 362 mark.
- 1:43:12Munson, as Spencer mentioned to you,
- 1:43:14with his first base and his first runs back at the end of the year,
- 1:43:17and the Brewers now, their lead has been cut to two runs.
- 1:43:20Seventh base hit for the Yankees.
- 1:43:22Who's the pitcher, Spencer?
- 1:43:24It might be Jerry Augustine.
- 1:43:26He's coming in the automobile right now.
- 1:43:31It's hard to tear through the windshield,
- 1:43:33but I believe it's Augustine.
- 1:43:36And he will face Chris Shamblin.
- 1:43:41Yankees had trouble with Bill Travers.
- 1:43:48And Rodriguez came on in the bottom of the sixth
- 1:43:51to get Dempsey with the bases loaded.
- 1:43:54But here, the Yanks have scored four runs.
- 1:43:57Jerry Augustine comes into pitch now for the Milwaukee Brewers
- 1:44:02in the bottom half of this, in the top half of this seventh inning.
- 1:44:07Third pitcher of the afternoon for the Brewers.
- 1:44:10And we got a ball game, will you?
- 1:44:12Oh, yeah.
- 1:44:13You know, it's bound to break open sometime.
- 1:44:15Yankees lost five-nothing in the opener,
- 1:44:17and they hit the ball hard here early against Bill Travers.
- 1:44:20Of course, the Brewers ran them down.
- 1:44:22Dempsey had a couple of balls hard.
- 1:44:26Randolph hit a ball hard.
- 1:44:28So the hits are beginning to fall over the Yankees.
- 1:44:31Milwaukee's still leading six to four.
- 1:44:33Plenty of time left as left-hander Jerry Augustine
- 1:44:36now out taking his warm-up throw.
- 1:44:39He came to the Brewers in September,
- 1:44:41and he won his first start in the major leagues
- 1:44:44against the New York Yankees.
- 1:44:46That came on September 16th.
- 1:44:48Finished with a 2-0 record and earned an average of 3.04.
- 1:44:52Only 23 years of age, he's a left-hander.
- 1:44:57Brewers had counted on him a bit earlier in the season.
- 1:45:00He suffered a knee injury in spring training
- 1:45:04and wound up missing the first two months of the season.
- 1:45:08He's a left-hander Jerry Augustine.
- 1:45:10It is now a two-run ball game, and Chris Shambliss
- 1:45:15will be coming to the plate.
- 1:45:17Lundsen just got off the Schneid.
- 1:45:19Let's see what Chris can do.
- 1:45:21All right, Benson, we like to tell the Mr. Bob Rogers
- 1:45:24of WJJL Radio in Niagara Falls
- 1:45:29on our Yankee Radio Network.
- 1:45:31Here's Shambliss.
- 1:45:32He's flying the center field, struck out,
- 1:45:34so he's 0 for 3.
- 1:45:39First pitch to Chris.
- 1:45:41Breaking ball is outside.
- 1:45:42A ball.
- 1:45:43One out, nobody on.
- 1:45:44Brewers lead 6-4.
- 1:45:46We're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:45:48Yankees have exploded here in the seventh inning for four runs,
- 1:45:51including the two-run home run by Thurmond.
- 1:45:54Augustine misses again outside.
- 1:45:56Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:45:58Baltimore leading Boston 5-1 after 8.
- 1:46:02That's why they used all those pitchers.
- 1:46:04Willoughby had come on.
- 1:46:07Two-hole pitch, one hopper to the shortstop.
- 1:46:09Grabbed by Yacht.
- 1:46:10Good hand.
- 1:46:11Good throw to first base.
- 1:46:12Shambliss is out.
- 1:46:13Two away.
- 1:46:18Here's Lou Pennella, the right fielder.
- 1:46:20He's bounced the short, bounced up the middle,
- 1:46:22and single to center field.
- 1:46:25Bounce went up the middle.
- 1:46:26The Travers got his glove on.
- 1:46:28Garcia got it behind second and made the force a second.
- 1:46:38No, check that.
- 1:46:39Pennella bounced the short, walked intentionally,
- 1:46:41and single to center field.
- 1:46:43The play was made on nettles on a bounce out of the middle.
- 1:46:45A good play by Garcia.
- 1:46:48Down low to Pennella.
- 1:46:49One ball, no strikes.
- 1:46:53They play Pennella straight away.
- 1:46:55Bill Sharp not too deep in right field.
- 1:46:57Third ball, looped up the middle.
- 1:46:58Base hit.
- 1:47:00Out of reach of the shortstop, Yonah.
- 1:47:01Quickly, Gorman Thomas, the center fielder,
- 1:47:03and Pennella will hold at first base.
- 1:47:06So Lou Pennella at first base with his second base
- 1:47:08into the ball game.
- 1:47:09They're two men out.
- 1:47:10And the batter, Greg Nettles, the Yankee third baseman.
- 1:47:15Nettles has struck out, bounced into a force out,
- 1:47:18and he's walked, so he's over two.
- 1:47:22Augustine, the third pitcher used by the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:47:25Left-hander Bill Travers started.
- 1:47:27He went five and two-thirds.
- 1:47:28Ed Rodriguez came on fish two-thirds.
- 1:47:30Now it's Jerry Augustine, who sets kicks and deals to Nettles.
- 1:47:34Curve ball, it's swung on him.
- 1:47:40Now George Scott, the first baseman,
- 1:47:42saying something to Pedro Garcia at second.
- 1:47:46And Garcia moves a couple of steps back on the grass.
- 1:47:50Now the one strike fish to Nettles.
- 1:47:52That's a fast ball in the dirt, it's a ball that strikes.
- 1:48:00Dick Hauser, the Yankee third base coach.
- 1:48:02Ellie Howard, the Yankee first base coach.
- 1:48:05With that and a little more action here in the second game
- 1:48:07of this set than in the first game.
- 1:48:12Here's a 1-1 pitch now to Nettles.
- 1:48:15Outside low, two balls and a strike.
- 1:48:20Brewers scored a run on the fourth, added two more on the fifth,
- 1:48:23three in the sixth, and they took a six-to-nothing lead into the seventh.
- 1:48:27Yankees scored four times here in the seventh inning.
- 1:48:31Two-one delivery.
- 1:48:33Nettles takes outside.
- 1:48:34Ball three, it's three and one.
- 1:48:38Rick Dempsey's on deck.
- 1:48:45We've got action out in the bullpen for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:48:48It's a bullpen is hitting, but it's a right-hander.
- 1:48:51Looks like Murphy might be out there throwing.
- 1:48:54Nettles bounces one foul outside of first base.
- 1:48:57And the count is full.
- 1:48:59Bonilla halfway down to second, we'll have to go back to first.
- 1:49:02So he'll be off and running with the three-two count and two outs.
- 1:49:09They'll play eight in Cleveland, and the Tigers lead Cleveland three to one.
- 1:49:17The Phillies tied up 4-4 after that.
- 1:49:20Here's the payoff pitch, not a Nettles.
- 1:49:21The runner's going, the pitch is in.
- 1:49:23Nope, just hit his bat and caught by Porter.
- 1:49:25He's out.
- 1:49:26Nettles strikes out.
- 1:49:27Greg's got it out of the way of ball inside and hit his bat.
- 1:49:30Porter grabs it.
- 1:49:32So Nettles strikes out.
- 1:49:33Yankees four four times here in the seventh inning.
- 1:49:37On one, two, three, four base hits, they leave a man on base.
- 1:49:41So the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Brewers six, the Yankees four.
- 1:49:47Jim Mason moves to shortstop for the New York Yankees,
- 1:49:50replacing Fred Stanley who left for a pinch hitter.
- 1:49:53Yankees trail it by a score of six-four.
- 1:49:55We go to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:49:57Elsewhere in the American League now, eight innings complete.
- 1:50:00Baltimore five, Boston one.
- 1:50:02Cleveland trailing Detroit three-one as they go eight innings.
- 1:50:06And now that is a primal.
- 1:50:08Baltimore beats Boston by a score of five to one.
- 1:50:12Leorio's getting five runs in the eighth inning to do it.
- 1:50:15And here's Robin Yantz to lead it off for the Brewers.
- 1:50:17Here's Bill.
- 1:50:18All right, Spencer.
- 1:50:19Yantz so far in the game is two for three, both singles.
- 1:50:21One's to left center and the other in the center field.
- 1:50:23He's also bounced back to the mound.
- 1:50:25How's Tidrow's pitch back and into the screen?
- 1:50:28No balls and a strike.
- 1:50:31Down the bottom part of the Brewer batting order, Robin Yantz,
- 1:50:34Pedro Garcia, and Charlie Moore.
- 1:50:38Tidrow's next delivery.
- 1:50:40Breaking ball on the inside corner to call strike two.
- 1:50:51Six to four Brewers, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:50:54Tidrow's two-strike delivery.
- 1:50:56Just misses outside.
- 1:50:58One and two.
- 1:51:02And we've got a note that Ron Bloomberg has been placed on the
- 1:51:0521-day disabled list, effective the 8th of April.
- 1:51:10Swing and a miss.
- 1:51:11Yantz goes down swinging, went away.
- 1:51:13So that's not good news at all, Spencer.
- 1:51:16No, speaking of the Boomer here, it's Thursday, and he was just so down,
- 1:51:19so disappointed.
- 1:51:20He was looking forward to this season, hoping he could help the Yankees
- 1:51:23after last year's injury problems.
- 1:51:26And just want to wish him the best of luck.
- 1:51:28He'll be heading out, I believe, to Los Angeles to see Dr. Curlin,
- 1:51:31the gentleman who treated Sandy Koufax through all those years,
- 1:51:34and hope he can get the Boomer back quickly.
- 1:51:38Here's Pedro Garcia.
- 1:51:40He's fouled out, doubled in a run, got on on an error in the sixth inning
- 1:51:44and scored.
- 1:51:47Garcia bats right in.
- 1:51:50One for three.
- 1:51:51Tidrow's first pitch is printed down the third-base side, but it's fouled.
- 1:51:55Nettles lets it go, grabs it in foul territory.
- 1:51:58No balls and a strike.
- 1:52:03The Brewers lead it 6-4 when the bottom of the seventh went out, nobody on.
- 1:52:11Tidrow, the third hurler used by the Yankees, Ed Figueroa started.
- 1:52:14He went five in the third, gave up six runs, five of those earned on 11 hits.
- 1:52:19Tippie Martinez came on and struck out Darryl Porter.
- 1:52:22Then Dick Tidrow came on.
- 1:52:23He's still in there.
- 1:52:25Tidrow came on on the sixth.
- 1:52:27Outside, a ball to strike on Garcia.
- 1:52:30Nettles guarding the line at third base.
- 1:52:32Mason, the new shortstop playing in the hole, they play Garcia to pull.
- 1:52:37White deep in the corner and lets field.
- 1:52:39Tidrow winds.
- 1:52:40Kick steals the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:52:42Swung on and fouled back.
- 1:52:45One ball, two strikes.
- 1:52:46You know, Bill, Mickey Rivers plays the center field position
- 1:52:50kind of like Dominic DiMaggio did.
- 1:52:52He kind of flanks to the side instead of facing straight up.
- 1:52:56That's the whole point.
- 1:53:02One ball, two strikes to count on Pedro Garcia.
- 1:53:06Tidrow now rocking, kicking, dealing the 1-2 pitch.
- 1:53:09Swung on and fouled off.
- 1:53:11Off the shin guard to Rick Dempsey.
- 1:53:14Grabbed by the home plate on par, George Maloney looks at it
- 1:53:17and gives it back to Dempsey who flips it back to Tidrow.
- 1:53:21The count remains, a ball and two strikes.
- 1:53:25You know, they changed the weather forecast.
- 1:53:27We're not going to get snow, Bill.
- 1:53:29How about the cold weather?
- 1:53:31It's going to be about 50 tomorrow, maybe a little bit of rain.
- 1:53:33It won't be bad.
- 1:53:37Here's Tidrow's 1-2 delivery to Garcia.
- 1:53:39Swung on, popped up, shallow left.
- 1:53:41Mason going back near the line, waiting.
- 1:53:43And the shortstop puts it away for out number two.
- 1:53:49With two outs and no body on, we'll get Gorman Thomas.
- 1:53:55Thomas went into the ball game for defensive purposes
- 1:53:58in the sixth inning.
- 1:53:59He went into play center field, and the six-to-less Donald
- 1:54:02moved from center field to left field.
- 1:54:04So Gorman Thomas is up.
- 1:54:13Big right-handed hitter.
- 1:54:15Tidrow's first delivery.
- 1:54:16Chuck Swing bounced back to the screen.
- 1:54:19No balls and a strike.
- 1:54:22Brewers have six runs on 12 hits.
- 1:54:24The Yankees four runs on eight hits,
- 1:54:26including the two-run homer by Thurman Munson,
- 1:54:29where the bottom of the seventh, two outs and no body on.
- 1:54:33Fast ball is inside and lower ball and a strike on Thomas.
- 1:54:44Tidrow is taking a lot of time reading Dempsey's signs.
- 1:54:47Now he rocks and deals.
- 1:54:49Curve ball swung on and missed, one and two.
- 1:54:59Now Thomas backs out, gets back in.
- 1:55:06And Tidrow is one-two delivery.
- 1:55:08Swung on, Luke fouled into the seats down the left side.
- 1:55:13And the count remains one and two.
- 1:55:15Tidrow came sidearm and jammed Thomas.
- 1:55:2044,000 Brewer fans were here a Thursday afternoon.
- 1:55:25They've got about 10 or 12 here this afternoon.
- 1:55:28Final game of the set will be tomorrow.
- 1:55:31They're expecting a good crowd tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:55:34Well, they should be a little better after a year
- 1:55:36of this revised weather forecast.
- 1:55:38They thought it was going to snow.
- 1:55:40One-two pitch now to Thomas.
- 1:55:43Luke's in the shallow center.
- 1:55:45It's going to be trouble.
- 1:55:46Panela's after still digging and he can't get to it.
- 1:55:48Ball's in front of him.
- 1:55:49And Thomas with a wide turn at first base will go back there
- 1:55:52as Panela gets the ball back in.
- 1:55:54So Gorman Thomas has just picked up the Brewers' 13th base.
- 1:55:58He's at first base with two outs.
- 1:56:01And the batter will be Don Money, the third baseman.
- 1:56:08Money has struck out.
- 1:56:09He has singled a left, bounced into a four south,
- 1:56:12and he got an infield hit and scored in the sixth inning.
- 1:56:22He was two for four in the opener,
- 1:56:23and he's two for four this afternoon.
- 1:56:25So he's four for eight against Yankee pitcher.
- 1:56:30Right-handed batter.
- 1:56:31Likes the ball up, likes the ball straight.
- 1:56:34Gidros sets and the pitch.
- 1:56:36In the air, two shallow lefts that are white coming on,
- 1:56:40crawling now, waiting.
- 1:56:42He's got it for out number three.
- 1:56:45No runs on a base hit and the Brewers leave a man.
- 1:56:47We'll play seven and the score, the Milwaukee Brewers six,
- 1:56:51the New York Yankees four.
- 1:56:53The Brewers leave the Yankees six to four,
- 1:56:55and here to see if they can keep this Yankee rally going,
- 1:56:58Spencer Ross.
- 1:56:59Okay, Bill, you got us four.
- 1:57:00And it's six-four now.
- 1:57:02The Yankees are behind with two more opportunities,
- 1:57:06and Jerry Augustine on the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:57:10Third pitcher of the afternoon for Milwaukee.
- 1:57:13Augustine came on following Thurman Munson's two-run home on the left,
- 1:57:17which made it a six-four ball game.
- 1:57:22There was just one out in that seventh inning.
- 1:57:25Yankees unable to muster anything else, and Rick Dempsey lead it off.
- 1:57:30He has hit the ball hard on all three occasions, each time to each outfielder.
- 1:57:37Line drive to center, line drive to right, and line drive to left.
- 1:57:43So he's 0 for three, and Rick 0 for six in the two games of the set thus far.
- 1:57:52Open to California just underway, Vita Blue pitching for the A's,
- 1:57:58and no score in that ball game after one inning of play.
- 1:58:02California pitching Nolan Ryan.
- 1:58:04Detroit beating Cleveland this afternoon.
- 1:58:07That's a final now, 3-1, Joe Coleman beating Dennis Eckersley.
- 1:58:11The two finals in the American League, Baltimore 5, Boston 1,
- 1:58:15Kenny Holzman winning it for the Orioles,
- 1:58:18and they got five in the eighth to take the decision.
- 1:58:21Detroit 3-1 over Cleveland, and Oakland to California just getting underway.
- 1:58:25In the National League, the Mets got a shutout pitching performance from John Matlack at Shea,
- 1:58:29and beat Montreal and Woody Priman by a score of 1-0,
- 1:58:33the game's lone run coming in the fourth inning.
- 1:58:36Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, the Phillies got three in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:58:42Pittsburgh out in front of that ball game now, 4-3,
- 1:58:45with the Phillies batting in the bottom half of inning number seven.
- 1:58:49Check that, it's a 4-4 ball game now.
- 1:58:51Rick Dempsey steps to the plate for the New York Yankees as we go to the top of the eighth
- 1:58:56to face Jerry Augustine.
- 1:58:59Don Money now protecting the line down at third base, first pitch down low ball one.
- 1:59:07It'll be Dempsey, Willie Randolph, and shortstop Jim Mason.
- 1:59:13Pitch line right to Robin Yacht for the out.
- 1:59:18And for the fourth time, Rick Dempsey getting good wood on the baseball.
- 1:59:24For the fourth time, not making the fielder move, hitting it right at him.
- 1:59:31And that, of course, a frustrating afternoon for Rick Dempsey.
- 1:59:38Getting an opportunity to play with Thurman Munson suffering from the dislocated finger,
- 1:59:42hitting the ball well each time, right at a fielder.
- 1:59:45Willie Randolph, the batter, swings at the first pitch, bounces his foul down the third base line,
- 1:59:50where it's glove by, well, that glove is handled by a pretty good feeling shortstop in his day,
- 1:59:56Dick Houser, Kansas City, and the Yankees.
- 2:00:05They put the lights on here in Milwaukee, pitched to Randolph, flung on,
- 2:00:09flied away at the plate up to the screen, and a count-oh and two.
- 2:00:15Willie Randolph, and I don't know if Les moves out in the on-deck circle.
- 2:00:23He will undoubtedly be the pinch hitter for Jim Mason.
- 2:00:29And the oh-two pitch inside ball one, one and two to Randolph.
- 2:00:34Willie Zolper two struck out, flied to left, walked and scored a run.
- 2:00:41Curve ball breaks low and inside ball two, two and two.
- 2:00:46They play Willie straight away.
- 2:00:51Two-two pitch inside ball three.
- 2:00:54Augustine went out in front of Randolph, oh and two, the count now goes full.
- 2:01:00The Yankees looking for a base runner.
- 2:01:04Three-two pitch bounce from the hole to his right goes Yacht, long throw to first inside.
- 2:01:10Robin Yacht going to his right and throwing out Willie Randolph, and they're a two away.
- 2:01:17And it will bring up Otto Velez as a pinch hitter for Jim Mason.
- 2:01:26This is Otto's first appearance of the 1976 season.
- 2:01:33We have two men out.
- 2:01:36Otto hit the ball very well this spring.
- 2:01:46Right-handed hitter, Jerry Augustine, wheels and deals inside ball one.
- 2:01:53The Syracuse last year hit two fifties.
- 2:01:58Played points in the last three seasons with the Yankees.
- 2:02:01The pitch, big cut, big swing, big strike.
- 2:02:05And it's one and one.
- 2:02:10The fielder, six throw, Liscano playing deep and toward the line.
- 2:02:13And a one-one pitch by Augustine, low and inside ball two.
- 2:02:16Jerry Augustine working very quickly.
- 2:02:19Twenty-three-year-old left-hander, rubs up the baseball.
- 2:02:25Dips his cap, gets the sign from Porter, two-one pitch, check swing, outside ball three.
- 2:02:31Three and one to Velez.
- 2:02:34The Yankee leadoff hitter, Mickey Rivers on deck.
- 2:02:41Velez checks down for the sign from third base coach Dick Houser.
- 2:02:46And here comes the three-winner.
- 2:02:49Fastball right down the pipe, three-two.
- 2:02:53Three and two to Otto Velez with two outs in the top of the eighth.
- 2:02:58And the pitch popped up into the air.
- 2:03:00George Scott moves back into the grass.
- 2:03:02Second baseman Garcia waves him off, under it and he one-hands it for the out.
- 2:03:07The wind began to pull that ball a bit to the left, but Garcia stayed with it for the third out.
- 2:03:13The Yankees in the eighth inning, nothing across, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 2:03:18There was nobody left on base through seven and a half.
- 2:03:20It's the Brewers six and the Yankees four.
- 2:03:23George Scott checks swing, pops it up down the first baseline in foul territory.
- 2:03:27Chris Shambliss makes the play, one pitch, one out.
- 2:03:31Here in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:35George Scott with quite an afternoon, two for three.
- 2:03:41With two RBIs and a couple of runs scored.
- 2:03:45Catcher Darrell Porter now comes to the plate.
- 2:03:48Porter one for three, walks, slides to right, single to center, scored a run, and took a call, third strike.
- 2:03:54Nick Tidro's first pitch, bounce to the ball hole.
- 2:03:57Between second and short and beyond, Randolph for a base hit.
- 2:04:01Center fielder Mickey Rivers throws it back in.
- 2:04:04And Darrell Porter has a second base hit of the ball game.
- 2:04:08A ground single to center.
- 2:04:11And it brings up Henry Aaron, who is at another Brewers performance.
- 2:04:16Aaron two for three, bounced into a fourth, single to left, then single to center to drive home a run.
- 2:04:22His fourth in two ball games.
- 2:04:24And he walked in the sixth inning.
- 2:04:27Yankees trail, six four, we're in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:04:30Tidro to the stretch and the pitch, right foul, down the left field line into the ground.
- 2:04:36Aaron ripping the baseball, but out in front of it.
- 2:04:45Henry Aaron, 42 years of age.
- 2:04:50The all-time major league home run hitter.
- 2:04:57Nick Tidro looks in for the sign, checking Porter at first.
- 2:05:01The pitch, bounce down the third baseline, just foul to the left of the bag.
- 2:05:06Third base up by Russ Getz, making the call. Mighty close.
- 2:05:14Aaron with 745, lifetime home run.
- 2:05:18His average dipped to 234 last year, 12 homers, 60 RVIs.
- 2:05:24He's already got four in two days here against the Yankees.
- 2:05:28Oh and two pitch coming. Change up inside, ball one, Dempsey loses control momentarily, drops the mask and picks it up.
- 2:05:37And Porter's not going anywhere.
- 2:05:44Henry Aaron, holder of numerous records, most runs batted in a lifetime.
- 2:05:51Most home runs.
- 2:05:54Stretched by Tidro and a one-two pitch in the inside corner, strike three call.
- 2:06:00Tidro catching the corner to pick up the strikeout and predict that it's his second.
- 2:06:08And it'll bring up 6'0' Escano. Escano with a two for four ball game.
- 2:06:13Single the left, fly to center, hitter to a fourth play, reached on an error on that particular fourth.
- 2:06:23Going to second and then single the left to drive home a run.
- 2:06:28First pitch fastball outside.
- 2:06:311-0 to 6'0 Escano.
- 2:06:35Darrell Porter down at first, we have two men out.
- 2:06:39They're in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:06:41Yankees who are down 6-0 have cut it to 6-4.
- 2:06:45Fastball inside, ball two, 2-0 to Escano.
- 2:06:50Looks down to third base coach Jimmy Brake and it flashes the side.
- 2:06:56They play Escano straight away and deep.
- 2:07:03Stretched by Tidro, 2-0 pitch, fastball on the outside corner, strike one.
- 2:07:08Tidro hitting the corner as well.
- 2:07:13Darrell Porter down at first, on a single to center.
- 2:07:23Two on pitch, take it inside, ball three.
- 2:07:27Three and one now to Escano.
- 2:07:31With Bill Sharp, the right fielder on deck.
- 2:07:38Escano a right handed hitter.
- 2:07:41Lots of twos, two balls, two strikes, two outs and the pitch.
- 2:07:46That is inside ball four.
- 2:07:48Scoreboard set two and two, it's three and two as I said.
- 2:07:51And a base on balls issued by Dick Tidro.
- 2:07:55Moving down to second is Darrell Porter and Yankee manager Billy Martin going out to the mound.
- 2:08:02And with left handed hitting Bill Sharp coming to the plate,
- 2:08:06we may see a left handed Yankee pitcher.
- 2:08:11Sparky Lyle warming up in the bullpen.
- 2:08:14And that's who it's going to be.
- 2:08:16Sparky Lyle will come in to replace Dick Tidro.
- 2:08:20Tidro came on in the sixth inning.
- 2:08:25After Tippi Moore Artina has struck out Darrell Porter,
- 2:08:29Martina's facing only one batter.
- 2:08:33And Tidro leaves having given up one base hit to three base hits.
- 2:08:52In two innings.
- 2:08:57He walked one, struck out two.
- 2:09:01And he is responsible for the runners on base right now.
- 2:09:05Sparky Lyle, who pitched a very strong inning Thursday,
- 2:09:10getting the Brewers in the eighth inning striking out two, comes on.
- 2:09:14I want to say hello to some of our other stations on the New York Yankee Homa Champions Baseball Network.
- 2:09:21Up in Walton, New York, Mr. Amos Finch of WDL Radio in Walton.
- 2:09:26Right near Alexandria Bay, Mr. Tom Bruce of WWNY Radio.
- 2:09:31Mr. Bob Klotz of WAVR Radio in Waverly.
- 2:09:35And in Connecticut, in Manchester, Mr. Jeff Jacobs at WINF.
- 2:09:41Up in New London, Mr. Paul Bernardo at WNLC.

- 2:09:58And Mr. Bob Klotz of WATS Radio in Sayre.
- 2:10:08Sparky Lyle comes down for the OX.
- 2:10:11Is Sparky looking for the comeback year after what was an off year for him?
- 2:10:21A lot of action in the spring and pitched rather effectively for the New York Yanks.
- 2:10:29Lyle, the fireman of the year in the past.
- 2:10:33Last season just was not one of his better performances as he appeared in sporting games.
- 2:10:38A record of five up and seven down.
- 2:10:41In 89 innings he gave a 94-base hit.
- 2:10:44And an earned run average of 3.13.
- 2:10:47The park rifer with figures of 19.74.
- 2:10:51And Sparky, 1.9, lost three.
- 2:10:55And in 114 innings of pitching gave up 93 hits.
- 2:11:00And an earned run average of 1.66.
- 2:11:05So the left-hander Sparky Lyle brought in by manager Billy Martin
- 2:11:10to face the left-hander hitting Bill Short.
- 2:11:13Fourth pitcher of the afternoon for the Yanks who trail in the ballgame by a score of 6-4
- 2:11:18here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:11:22The fluttery audio has nothing to do with the duplication process.
- 2:11:27It is found on the master reels.
- 2:11:32Sharp in the ballgame is 0-4.
- 2:11:37First pitch by Sparky breaks in strike one.
- 2:11:41No balls, one strike.
- 2:11:43Final from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh.
- 2:11:47Got a run in the 11th to beat the Phillies by a score of 5-4.
- 2:11:51Tug McGraw taking the loss.
- 2:11:53Larry Demery the winner.
- 2:11:54Pitch hit into the air.
- 2:11:55Right field, moving her over is Luke Pennella.
- 2:11:58And we're out cutting in front of him, center fielder Mickey Rivers who makes the courage.
- 2:12:02And at his ovaries the center fielder's ball.
- 2:12:05He owns that very story out there.
- 2:12:07Rivers puts it away for the Brewers in the eighth inning.
- 2:12:09No runs.
- 2:12:10They get one base hit.
- 2:12:12There were no Yankee errors.
- 2:12:13There were two men left on.
- 2:12:14So we go to the ninth inning.
- 2:12:16The Yankees leading 2-2 tie.
- 2:12:17The score, the Brewers 6 and the Yankees 4.
- 2:12:25To Frank Messer, Phil Rizzuto and Bill White.
- 2:12:27This is Spencer Ross from Milwaukee County Stadium.
- 2:12:30And into the ninth inning we go.
- 2:12:31The Yankees lead 2-2 tie, 3 to grab the lead.
- 2:12:35And we're down 6-0 in this ballgame.
- 2:12:39They come up with four runs in the seventh.
- 2:12:42And it'll be the top of the Yankee order.
- 2:12:44Mickey Rivers, Roy White, Thurman Monson.
- 2:12:48And should anybody get aboard, Chris Scherbler's to follow.
- 2:12:50Mickey Rivers is 0-4, bounce to first, fly to right, hit into a forced play.
- 2:12:57And then Juro Fomer run with a ground ball.
- 2:12:59First pitch taken down, low ball one.
- 2:13:01Rivers shortened up to bunt.
- 2:13:03And third baseman Don Money way in on the infield grass there on the third baseline.
- 2:13:08Rivers can scoot and Billy Martin will take him anywhere right now.
- 2:13:12But, oh whatever, Monday night in Fort Lauderdale the Yankees winning a ballgame from the Mets.
- 2:13:18Double steal, a squeezed play.
- 2:13:21Billy likes to play it that way.
- 2:13:23One and one pitch.
- 2:13:24Bounce in the hole toward short.
- 2:13:26Up with it is gone.
- 2:13:27Long throw gets away from Scott.
- 2:13:29And Mickey Rivers is aboard.
- 2:13:31And can he fly down that line?
- 2:13:34It was chopped over third baseman Don Money's head.
- 2:13:39And he got it in the hole, threw on the first.
- 2:13:44Chopped over third baseman Don Money's head.
- 2:13:49And he got it in the hole, threw on the first.
- 2:13:54And it's ruled a base hit.
- 2:13:56Mickey Rivers beat it out.
- 2:13:58An infield single.
- 2:14:02Just about a definite out for anybody else although Scott did not hold the baseball.
- 2:14:07And now Alex Gramits moving out to the mound.
- 2:14:10And he wants to talk with Jerry Augustine.
- 2:14:15Roy White the scheduled batter.
- 2:14:18Roy of course will stay in there.
- 2:14:20Thurman munching the fire and that's going to be it for Jerry Augustine.
- 2:14:24So Augustine leaves.
- 2:14:27And he pitched well in relief for the Brewers.
- 2:14:30He came on in that seventh inning when the Yankees erupted for four runs.
- 2:14:42Got the Yankees one, two, three in the eighth.
- 2:14:45And the new pitcher coming into the ball game for the Brewers will be Tom Murphy.
- 2:14:55So Murphy becomes the fourth pitcher of the afternoon for Milwaukee.
- 2:14:59Each club is gone with four.
- 2:15:03Bill Travers started for Milwaukee.
- 2:15:05Ed Rodriguez came on.
- 2:15:07He got rocked for the four runs.
- 2:15:09Jerry Augustine followed.
- 2:15:11And Jerry Augustine pitching very well in relief.
- 2:15:15One and two-thirds innings for Augustine.
- 2:15:21And he gave up a one-base hit.
- 2:15:24Struck out one.
- 2:15:26Did not walk anybody.
- 2:15:27And he is responsible for the runner, Vicki Rivers, down at.
- 2:15:37Zern Run average was a rather anemic 4.60.
- 2:15:42He won one and lost nine.
- 2:15:50The right-hander, Tom Murphy, 30 years old from Cleveland, Ohio.
- 2:15:54We'll try and save it for the Brewers as the Yankees.
- 2:15:57Trying to come back from a six-run deficit.
- 2:16:00Quickly checking the scoreboard in the American League.
- 2:16:02Baltimore beat Boston 5-1 with five in the eighth.
- 2:16:05Detroit over Cleveland 3-1.
- 2:16:08Oakland and California just getting underway in the first.
- 2:16:11There's no score.
- 2:16:12Vita Blue against Nolan Ryan in the National League.
- 2:16:14Metz won.
- 2:16:15Montreal nothing.
- 2:16:16Pittsburgh 5-4 over Philadelphia.
- 2:16:18Cincinnati beat Houston 13-7.
- 2:16:20And it was Chicago edging St. Louis by a score of 4-3.
- 2:16:24Tom Murphy is ready.
- 2:16:26Ready to pitch to Roy White.
- 2:16:28Vicki Rivers, the runner down at first base.
- 2:16:31Rivers got his first stolen base of the season Thursday.
- 2:16:36He had 70 last year.
- 2:16:39And Murphy goes to the stretch.
- 2:16:41The pitch fouled away behind the plate.
- 2:16:43Up into the upper deck, strike one.
- 2:16:46It's been a good afternoon for Roy White after striking out in the first.
- 2:16:49He's got an infield single and single to left, then single to right to drive home a run.
- 2:16:54So three for four for Roy White.
- 2:16:58Fighting left against the right-handed throwing Murphy.
- 2:17:01Murphy to the stretch.
- 2:17:03Gets the sign and the pitch.
- 2:17:05Swung out and missed.
- 2:17:06Strike two.
- 2:17:07Tom Murphy gets out ahead of Roy White.
- 2:17:12Don Money close to that line at third.
- 2:17:15Doesn't want to let anything get by.
- 2:17:17This could be an extra base hit.
- 2:17:19The rest of the Brewers playing White straight away.
- 2:17:23Murphy to the stretch.
- 2:17:25Rivers leads away.
- 2:17:260-2 pitch.
- 2:17:27Upside ball one.
- 2:17:32On deck, Thurman Munson.
- 2:17:36Got the Yanks back into this ball game with a two-run homer in the seventh.
- 2:17:40The 1-2 pitch by Murphy.
- 2:17:41Taking in there.
- 2:17:42Called strike three.
- 2:17:44Murphy let up on him a little and hit it on the outside corner to pick up the strikeout.
- 2:17:50So there is one man away here in the ninth inning.
- 2:17:54And Thurman Munson comes to the plate.
- 2:17:58Thurman, one for four, bounced the short,
- 2:18:00tied the center twice, and then uncorked his first home run of the 1976 season.
- 2:18:07Over the wall in left field, up beyond the 362-foot marker,
- 2:18:12and that made it a 6-4 ball game.
- 2:18:14Now Darrell Porter goes out to the mound to talk to Tom Murphy.
- 2:18:21They play Munson.
- 2:18:24Deep and straight away.
- 2:18:26Thurman with excellent power to Hall Field.
- 2:18:30Nicky Rivers leads away from first base.
- 2:18:36The stretch by Murphy.
- 2:18:39And the pitch.
- 2:18:40Outside corner, strike one, called.
- 2:18:46George Maloney, unlike some umpires, doesn't come with that call quickly.
- 2:18:50He mows it over for a second, then raises that right hand or does not.
- 2:18:55The 0-1 pitch.
- 2:18:56There goes Rivers.
- 2:18:57Taking low.
- 2:18:58Porter's throw to second.
- 2:18:59Rivers in there by quite a distance.
- 2:19:02And Rivers steals his second base of the season into ball games.
- 2:19:07And he eliminates the potential double play ball.
- 2:19:12And the pitch was taken for a ball, one-on-one to Thurman-Munson.
- 2:19:19The Yanks get out of the double play possibility.
- 2:19:21Rivers in scoring position down at second base.
- 2:19:25On deck, Chris Shamblin.
- 2:19:27Thurman-Munson at the plate.
- 2:19:31One-one pitch coming.
- 2:19:33Murphy goes to the stretch, checks Rivers.
- 2:19:35And the pitch, swung on, fouled away down the first baseline.
- 2:19:39Up into the crowd, and the count goes one ball, two strikes to Munson.
- 2:19:44Murphy gets ahead of Thurman.
- 2:19:47Tom taking plenty of time.
- 2:19:48Walks out back beyond the mound.
- 2:19:50Throws up the baseball, now steps up to the dirt portion.
- 2:19:53And on to the rubber.
- 2:19:57Now he's set.

- 2:20:07One-two pitch to Thurman.
- 2:20:08Swung on, bounced to short.
- 2:20:10Backhanded by Yacht, but he will not have a play.
- 2:20:13In field single for Thurman-Munson.
- 2:20:15Yacht prevented it from going into the outfield.
- 2:20:18Even with Rivers' speed, had that ball gotten to the outfield,
- 2:20:22it is doubtful that Mickey would have scored because he held up at second.
- 2:20:27For fear the Yacht would come up with it.
- 2:20:30But nevertheless, the Yankees now have the tying run on base on an in field single by Thurman-Munson.
- 2:20:35And here is Chris Shambliss.
- 2:20:38Shambliss 0 for 4.
- 2:20:40Left-handed hitter against the right-handed pitching Tom Murphy.

- 2:20:54Rivers lead it off with an in field single off Augustine, Alex Gramis,
- 2:20:58and brought on Murphy who struck out White and Munson for the in field base hit.
- 2:21:04First and second, one away.
- 2:21:08Chris Shambliss steps in.
- 2:21:10Murphy kicks and throws outside ball two.

- 2:22:12And the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:22:14Lined up the alley, left center field.
- 2:22:16It's going to be in there for extra bases.

- 2:22:37After being down 6-0 in the seventh, 4-7, 2 here in the ninth, and Chris Shambliss with his first base end of the season.
- 2:22:47And what a biggie, up the alley and left center field.
- 2:22:51And we are all even, as Munson scores all the way from first.
- 2:22:55Rivers comes in easily from second.
- 2:22:59And now, Lou Pennella with a lead run in scoring position.
- 2:23:07Lou is 2-3.
- 2:23:09Bounced to short, was walked intentionally, and single to center twice.
- 2:23:14Right-handed hitter against Murphy. Lines and deep down the left field line, but curving foul.

- 2:24:05And the Yankees lead it by a score of 7-6.
- 2:24:08Three runs for the Yankees, here are the Knights in it.

- 2:24:26The inner ear infection, unable to get a track all season.
- 2:24:32The Brewers are going to walk, Greg Nettles intentionally.
- 2:24:39To get to Rick Dempsey, who is at a frustrating day.

- 2:25:19We had Bill Whiten here for the seventh inning.
- 2:25:21Yankees scored four times.
- 2:25:22I was beginning to think all the Yankee runs were reserved for when Bill O'Fill come in.
- 2:25:27For the Yankees, they're turning that around.
- 2:25:29Murphy leaves as New Yorkers score three here in the ninth.
- 2:25:35And Billy Champion will come in to pitch for the Brewers.
- 2:25:41Tom Murphy just did not have it.

- 2:33:18they had 16 inches of snow in Milwaukee.

- 2:35:05Johnny Oates suffered a broken left flavicle at the shoulder.
- 2:35:08He'll be out from six days weeks.
- 2:35:09It happened in the ninth inning when one of the Pirates Dave Parker crashed into him,
- 2:35:13forcing Oates to drop the ball and Pittsburgh tied the game.

- 2:35:45Sparky not taking much time.
- 2:35:49He's up on the mound, looks into the side from Rick Dempsey.
- 2:35:52Down comes the left arm, in comes the pitch, fouled away again.
- 2:35:55Up over the Brewer dugout, into the crowd, and a souvenir for one of the 10,871 on hand here.
- 2:36:04We're mighty happy through sixth inning.
- 2:36:06Their club led it six-nil.
- 2:36:08The Yankees got four in the seventh, a big hit, a two-run homer by Thurman Munson.
- 2:36:13And the 2-2 pitch lined into the hole, the center field for Ovae Smith.
- 2:36:19They sit for Robin Yant to lead off the ninth inning.
- 2:36:23And the Brewers get the lead runner on, and Pedro Garcia will come to the plate.
- 2:36:30Garcia is one for four, pop to the catcher, single the left to drive home a run,
- 2:36:38reach down an error and score, and then pops the short.
- 2:36:47Nobody out, top of the ninth, bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:36:49Yankees lead it nine to six, and they got five more in the ninth after four in the seventh.
- 2:36:55Sparky's first pitch to Garcia, taken down low, ball one.
- 2:37:01On deck for the Brewers, the top of the order, Gorman Thomas.
- 2:37:07Bobby Darwin has stepped out, and he will be the pinch hitter for Gorman Thomas.
- 2:37:12The pitch, a high ball, too, and Darwin, a man with great power.
- 2:37:19Sparky doesn't want to lose Garcia, so looks down to get the side from third base coach Jimmy Bregan.
- 2:37:27They play Garcia to pull.
- 2:37:28Mickey Rivers shaded way over to the left, Roy White close to the line.

- 2:38:03Sparky now steps off the mound on the backside of it, now steps back.
- 2:38:08The Justice cap goes to the stretch, checks the runner, and the three-one-six, rolling inside, ball four.
- 2:38:19And the Brewers now have the tying run at the plate.
- 2:38:24And the person of Bobby Darwin, who will hit for Gorman Thomas.
- 2:38:33Darwin had been a pitcher for the first seven years of his professional career, and he has become a home run hitter.
- 2:38:41And Billy Martin out of the Yankee dugout makes his way to the mound.
- 2:38:47And we may be getting a new pitcher to face the right-handed hitting Bobby Darwin.
- 2:38:55There is action in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:39:03Darwin had 25 home runs for the Minnesota Twins in 1974, and a total of 13 last year for Minnesota and Milwaukee.
- 2:39:12Came to Milwaukee in a deal with Santiani Briggs to the Twins. Sparky Lyle leaves.
- 2:39:21And we're awaiting the next Yankee pitcher.
- 2:39:26The bullpen is partially hidden from us, and as soon as the pitcher comes out from behind the wall, he hops into an automobile.
- 2:39:37And unable to tell just who it is.
- 2:39:41But Sparky Lyle leaves.
- 2:39:44He still has the pitcher of record on the wind side. He can win it, he cannot lose it.
- 2:39:49The Yankees lead it by a score of 9-6.
- 2:39:53And Sparky will put the first two batters on here in the ninth inning.
- 2:39:58Robin Yard on a single to center. Pedro Garcia on a base-down ball.
- 2:40:05And Dave Pagan will come out for the Yankees.
- 2:40:10Hard-throwing right-hander.
- 2:40:13Getting the call from manager Billy Martin.
- 2:40:20Pagan makes his way to the mound, and he'll start throwing in his warm-up tosses.
- 2:40:24It's a 9-6 ball game. The Yankees, who were down six-nothing, scored four in the seventh, five in the ninth, to take the lead.
- 2:40:33And now Milwaukee has put the first two runners on here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:40:39Tomorrow getaway day in Milwaukee, then it's on to Baltimore.
- 2:40:45So Dave Pagan goes through his warm-up tosses now.
- 2:40:52Pagan, who has been up a couple of times with the Yankees.
- 2:40:57Hey, we just got word that Andy Messersmith has signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves.
- 2:41:03A four-year deal, worth a dollar.
- 2:41:07I don't know how many dollars, but it's a bunch.
- 2:41:12So Messersmith signed. The Braves under new ownership this year said Turner.
- 2:41:17But he wants to turn things around there, so he signed Messersmith.
- 2:41:21Dave Pagan appeared in 13 ball games for the Yankees last year.
- 2:41:25And that's a big one for him right here at the outset.
- 2:41:29Right-handed pitcher, 6'2", 176 pounds.
- 2:41:34A native Canadian from Saskatchewan, first pitch pass ball inside, ball one to Bobby Dorland.
- 2:41:40Robin Young is down at second. Pedro Garcia on at first.
- 2:41:47With nobody out here in the ninth.
- 2:41:50And Dave Pagan, the fifth Yankee pitcher of the afternoon, facing plugging Bobby Dorland.
- 2:41:57And a one-oh pitch coming. Flung up, bounced to third.
- 2:42:00Neto cannot handle it. Gets away from Yankees, he will not go any further.
- 2:42:06And the bases are loaded.
- 2:42:08The bases are loaded for Milwaukee.
- 2:42:21And there's an error on Greg Neto, says the official score.
- 2:42:25And it brings up Don Money.
- 2:42:29Pagan got Darwin and hit the ground ball.
- 2:42:35But Neto's unable to handle it.
- 2:42:37And here's Don Money.
- 2:42:41Yoncich serves, Garcia second.
- 2:42:44And Darwin at first. The pitch, the money down low, ball one.
- 2:42:51Dave Pagan looks in for the sign.
- 2:42:55The ball is in the right hand. He goes to the stretch. The pitch, what a team left field.
- 2:42:59Way back, long right, go back.
- 2:43:02It's ball in the corner. A grand slam home run for Don Money.
- 2:43:07From a four-pointed play by a score of ten times.
- 2:43:11Incredible.
- 2:43:15An incredibly disappointing finish for the New York Yankees.
- 2:43:20And Don Money is in a grand slam home run.
- 2:43:25The left field. And Yankee manager Billy Mark out there arguing, failingly, with a first base up five.
- 2:43:36And kicking up the dirt.
- 2:43:38The Yankees have lost this ball game.
- 2:43:43It's a yellow, I guess. But that appears to be it.
- 2:43:50The ball game is over. The Milwaukee Brewers come up with four runs.
- 2:43:56In the ninth inning, a grand slam home run by Don Money wins it.
- 2:44:01And that is it. The final score is the Milwaukee.
- 2:44:05Hold it, hold it. Hold it. The Brewers are being told to come back out.
- 2:44:10I believe what happened is we had a timeout, possibly called, by the Yankees.
- 2:44:16And Billy Martin kicks up a storm.
- 2:44:19And the umpires are telling the Brewers to come back.
- 2:44:29Billy Martin argued, argued, argued.
- 2:44:34And now Alex Grannis is going to argue, argue, argue.
- 2:44:40His ball club was back in the dugout.
- 2:44:45Ready to go home with a 10-9 victory.
- 2:44:50But the umpires are calling him back.
- 2:44:57And Grannis now begins his protestations through the umpiring crew.
- 2:45:02Alex out of the dugout. And he'll begin to kick the dirt.
- 2:45:09He's being told this ball game is not over.
- 2:45:13Don Money jumps on a fastball and a 1-0 pitch by Dave Vegas.
- 2:45:19And rocks it into the left field stand.
- 2:45:22No doubt from the moment that ball left the bat, it was going to go out of here.
- 2:45:28And then, after everybody crossed the plate, the Yankees stayed in the field.
- 2:45:33Manager Billy Martin began to argue.
- 2:45:37I believe the argument concerned a timeout at first base, called by the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 2:45:49Martin won his point.
- 2:45:52The Brewers are being told the ball game is not over.
- 2:45:55The bases will remain loaded, although Alex Grannis has not told his ball club to go back out onto the field.
- 2:46:03This has been an incredible ball game.
- 2:46:07The Yankees trailing 6-0 at 4 of the 7, 5 of the 9 to take a 9-6 lead.
- 2:46:13The Brewers load the bases with nobody else.
- 2:46:17And listen to this crowd.
- 2:46:29There are 6,871 on hand, and every one of them is doing.
- 2:46:40Don Money will have to go back to the bat rack, get himself a bat,
- 2:46:44and come to the plate again, against Dave Fagan.
- 2:46:51The Milwaukee base runners have not gone back out onto the field.
- 2:46:58Robin Yott on third, Pedro Garcia on second, and Bobby Darwin on first.
- 2:47:05But Alex Grannis hasn't sent them out yet.
- 2:47:15There's no doubt Grannis will play this game under protest.
- 2:47:20So we'll have two games this season, two protests.
- 2:47:22Yankee manager Billy Martin protests the Thursday's loss, due to the conditions of the mound.
- 2:47:31But she said it affected Catfish Hunter's performance in the early going.
- 2:47:35It's going to get adjusted to it.
- 2:47:43First face up by Reggie McKeegan, along with both way to the fire,
- 2:47:47George Maloney over there, sending everybody out onto the field.
- 2:47:52And this crowd is set.
- 2:47:55A couple of fans have jumped up on the Brewers dugout,
- 2:47:59and are being asked to leave by one of the utters.
- 2:48:12So the end of the ball game that wasn't the end of the ball game.
- 2:48:17And we're going to continue.
- 2:48:22Don Money back at the plate.
- 2:48:24Robin Yonko back to third, down at second, Pedro Garcia.
- 2:48:29Bobby Darwin is at first, and Don Money with a 1-0 count.
- 2:48:36And the crowd booing and booing and booing.
- 2:48:38The pitch taking a high ball, too.
- 2:48:412-0.
- 2:48:46On deck, George Scott.
- 2:48:50This is incredible.
- 2:48:522-0 count, and the pitch piled away, strike one.
- 2:49:05The timeout was called by first face umpire Jim McKeegan.
- 2:49:11And that's the reason for the delay.
- 2:49:132-1 pitch, down low, fastball ball 3, 3-1.
- 2:49:18The Brewers have the tying run at first.
- 2:49:22A potential winning run is at the plate.
- 2:49:25They thought they'd win, but Don Money cracked a grand slam home run,
- 2:49:28but Jim McKeegan is all time out.
- 2:49:31Here's the 3-1 pitch.
- 2:49:33Hit up for the big air to right field.
- 2:49:36Moving over, Lou Fenella tagging at third is Scott.
- 2:49:39Fenella makes the catch.
- 2:49:41Yonk fakes the run and goes back to third, and Chambliss cuts the ball off.
- 2:49:46So there is one away.
- 2:49:49And it remains a 9-6 ballgame.
- 2:49:52And now it brings up George Scott.
- 2:49:57Scott on the afternoon, which is rapidly becoming the night, is 2-4.
- 2:50:06Popped the first, single the left, drove both two runs with a triple and a six,
- 2:50:12and then popped the first.
- 2:50:13Right-handed hitter, and the pitch, change of fate, a pie ball one.
- 2:50:19Robin Yonk is down to third.
- 2:50:21Pedro Garcia at second.
- 2:50:22Bobby Darwin at first.
- 2:50:24Dave Pagan, the fifth Yankee pitcher of the afternoon.
- 2:50:289-6, Yankees lead it.
- 2:50:31And around comes the right arm.
- 2:50:33In comes the pitch.
- 2:50:34Hit to center field.
- 2:50:35Mickey Rivers has a beat on it.
- 2:50:37Yonk will tag and score from third as Rivers makes the play.
- 2:50:41Down to third is Pedro Garcia, and there are two men away.
- 2:50:44It is now a 9-7 ballgame.
- 2:50:46Bobby Darwin holds it first.
- 2:50:48Sacrifice fly for George Scott.
- 2:50:55As Yonk scores from third.
- 2:50:58So now runners on first and third, and it will be up to Darrell Porter.
- 2:51:09And Billy Martin back out onto the Yankee mound.
- 2:51:12And we may be seeing pitcher number six of the afternoon against left-handed hitting Darrell Porter.
- 2:51:21There goes the automobile out there again.
- 2:51:28That's the kind of baseball, the exciting baseball that Billy Martin,
- 2:51:33hoping to interject to this Yankee ball club, not so much this disputed golf.
- 2:51:39That's the squeeze play on the ninth inning, which drove home a run.
- 2:51:44Now it's a now 9-7, that run extremely important.
- 2:51:49It drove home the final run of the inning, as the Yankees scored five times.
- 2:52:03In this ninth inning, Sparky Lyle was in there, gave up a leadoff single to Robin Yonk.
- 2:52:09Pedro Garcia, Lin Wong, Yankee manager Billy Martin, decided to go once again to his bullpen.
- 2:52:16Dave Pagan came out. Dave Pagan got Bobby Darwin to bounce the ground ball to third base.
- 2:52:26Greg Nettles could not handle it. That loaded the bases.
- 2:52:31Ken Brett now coming in for the Yankees to make his first appearance as a Yankee pitcher,
- 2:52:37replacing Pagan, who pitches two-thirds of an inning.
- 2:52:41As far as the Brewers concerned, he gave a four-run, but he did not.
- 2:52:46Following Darwin, reaching on Nettles' error, Don Money took a ball.
- 2:52:52On the second pitch, he cracked one over the wall and left field for an apparent grand slam home run.
- 2:52:59The Yankees remained on the field, and Billy Martin leaving the field as the crowd is throwing paper soda cups at him,
- 2:53:06takes a deep bow and a curtsy as he heads into the dugout.
- 2:53:11And it's hit by a couple of more paper cups.
- 2:53:16And now a half-dozen fans have moved into the outfield.
- 2:53:22That's Ken Brett. The left-hander comes in to face Darrell Porter.
- 2:53:30Don Money's home run was called back when first-base umpire Jimmy Keegan ruled that the at-call timeout,
- 2:53:40Martin saw it. First-base, first-base, Kamlin also saw it and heard it.
- 2:53:48And Pagan's home run pitch does not go into the record book.
- 2:53:54After the Brewers had gone to the clubhouse, they were told, come on back.
- 2:53:58And they did. Pagan then got Don Money to fly to right.
- 2:54:03George Scott sent in a sacrifice fly, scoring Robin Young from third.
- 2:54:08We now have runners at first and third for the Brewers. Bobby Darwin is at first. Pedro Garcia at third.
- 2:54:16The tying runs are at base, and Darrell Porter is at the plate.
- 2:54:22The Yankees lead 9-7. Porter, two for four in the ball game, flies to right, single to center, score the run.
- 2:54:29First pitch, low and outside, Dempsey, good defense to play, blocks the baseball.
- 2:54:35Porter flies to right, single to center, took a call, third strike and single to right.
- 2:54:39So he's two for four, three for seven in this two-game series. And the pitch outside, ball two.
- 2:54:52On deck for the Brewers is Henry Aron. Porter now steps out.
- 2:55:02Here's the 2-0 pitch outside, ball three. A base on balls would send the tying run in a scoring position down at second base.
- 2:55:12Third base on fire, Russ Getz.
- 2:55:17Is now calling the whole plate on fire, George Belloni.
- 2:55:28And another timeout was called. This one by third base on fire, Russ Getz. So it is not 3-0, it is 2-0.
- 2:55:37The Brewers are losing the timeout battle.
- 2:55:41Two balls, no strikes. And the pitch, check swing, strike one.
- 2:55:48Right in front of the Yankee dugout, it is entirely littered with debris. Mostly paper cups, a couple of cans.
- 2:55:55Two-one pitch bounce over the mound. Randolph has only one plate of shambles at first.
- 2:56:00He gets them and the ballgame is over. The New York Yankees have won it.
- 2:56:04The Yankees have beaten the Milwaukee Brewers in an incredible, exciting finish.
- 2:56:09Here at the county stadium of Milwaukee, it is the Yankees heading to the dugout.
- 2:56:13They are hit by paper cups, but they have won the ballgame.
- 2:56:17The ballgame is over. The final score, the New York Yankees, nine, and the Milwaukee Brewers, seven.
- 2:56:23We'll be back with today's game totals right after this message.
