- 0:00People believe generally that taking up the spiritual life
- 0:04involves a form of escapism from the daily obstacles,
- 0:09difficulties and pressures of living and active life in
- 0:12society. Some people in fact take up the
- 0:15spiritual path as an escape, but that is neither the primary
- 0:19motivation nor does it represent the majority of spiritual
- 0:23seekers. Spirituality in its essence
- 0:27involves a change of consciousness that is challenged
- 0:30at each step by the habits, instincts and trained responses
- 0:35that the seeker brings with him, as well as millennia of human
- 0:40evolution embedded in his being, the challenges he faces with his
- 0:45physical, vital and mental nature, and then on top of that,
- 0:50the interaction with others and living in the world in some form
- 0:54or another. When the seeker becomes aware of
- 0:58the difficulties, when the amazing experiences and insights
- 1:02recede, it is quite common for a period of dullness,
- 1:07dissatisfaction or depression to enter the play of the three
- 1:12gunas. The qualities of nature, satwa,
- 1:15rajas and tamas continues for the spiritual seeker and thus he
- 1:21goes through periods when one or another of these is predominant.
- 1:27When Sattva comes to the fore, he feels that there is light,
- 1:31harmony, beauty and the advent of knowledge.
- 1:35When Rajas rules, he may experience periods of desire or
- 1:39ambition that can overpower his spiritual aspiration with
- 1:43demands and vital seeking. When Thomas takes the
- 1:47predominant position, particularly when the rajasic
- 1:51element has been frustrated or denied, he can experience doubt,
- 1:56despair, depression. The phenomenon of the dark night
- 2:01of the soul is something that arises at some point for every
- 2:06seeker as they navigate through all the issues they face during
- 2:11the spiritual development. Sri Aurobindo makes an important
- 2:16point for the spiritual aspiration when he says, quote,
- 2:20he who chooses the Infinite has been chosen by the infinite.
- 2:25End Quote. We continue to think that our
- 2:29body, life, mind, Nexus, the ego, personality, the external
- 2:33person is in charge and makes its own decisions without
- 2:38recognizing that the universal manifestation is driving the
- 2:42entire process forward. And those who are ready, those
- 2:47who are receptive, are the ones who come to the spiritual
- 2:50transformative process. All things in nature await their
- 2:55time. Gestation and birth takes time.
- 3:00The transformation from the Caterpillar to the butterfly
- 3:03takes time. None of this is consciously
- 3:07controlled by the individual being, but rather there is a
- 3:11process of nature as manifested by the Divine that carries out
- 3:16these transformations. Similarly, we see the children
- 3:20grow at their own pace, first focusing primarily on physical
- 3:24development, then vital development and later mental
- 3:28development. When the individual is called to
- 3:32the spiritual path, it means that he has reached the stage in
- 3:35his development when that is the inevitable next step.
- 3:40He can try to avoid it, he can attempt to misuse it, but if the
- 3:46calling is true, he will eventually gain the focus and
- 3:50receptivity and develop the active aspiration within him to
- 3:55grow into the spiritual life in all its fulness, Sri Orobindo
- 4:00notes quote. All who enter the spiritual path
- 4:04have to face the difficulties and ordeals of the path, those
- 4:08which rise from their own nature and those which come in from
- 4:12outside. The difficulties in the nature
- 4:15always rise again and again till you overcome them.
- 4:19They must be faced with both strength and patience.
- 4:23But the vital part is prone to depression when ordeals and
- 4:26difficulties rise. This is not peculiar to you, but
- 4:30comes to all sadiqs. It does not imply an unfitness
- 4:35for the sadhna or justify a sense of helplessness, but you
- 4:40must train yourself to overcome this reaction of depression.
- 4:45All who cleave to the path steadfastly can be sure of their
- 4:49spiritual destiny. If anyone fails to reach it, it
- 4:53can only be for one of the two reasons, either because they
- 4:58leave the path or because for some lure of ambition, vanity,
- 5:04desire, etcetera, they go astray from the sincere dependence on
- 5:09the Divine. End Quote Reference Shrioro
