- 3:08that is anybody else in here when he was shot? No, sir,
- 3:12nobody except and the guys who shot him. Did you see them? Yes,
- 3:15sir, better take that phone and call in Tim. I'm taking this
- 3:19kid down a headquarters for questioning. Come along, son, Oh it is
- 3:39I understand it. You were the only other person in the lunchroom tonight when
- 3:44Detective Green was killed? Is that right? Yeah? And if we're going
- 3:47to find out anything about this, it's up to you to tell us all
- 3:50you know, right, I guess it is, sir good Old. Are
- 3:55you ready? Nineteen? How long have you been working at the Red Star?
- 4:00Just a little over a month. What did you do before that?
- 4:02Oh? Nothing much, I guess I was looking for work. And I
- 4:06say, what time did you come to work tonight? Eleven o'clock? I
- 4:11work until six in the morning. And what time did Detective Green come in
- 4:15the lunch room? Just after midnight? Sir? Okay, Now, did
- 4:18I want you to tell us everything that happened after Detective Greens came into the
- 4:23lunch room. Don't omit a thing. Tell us everything just as you remember
- 4:27it. Well, I was polishing the coffee iron when he came in.
- 4:32He hung his hat up on the rack and came over and sat down at
- 4:35the counter. I thought, give me a hamburger and a cup of coffee,
- 4:43kid, Yes, sir, everything on the burger, got the onions
- 4:46right cold outside, not very it's pretty cold along about three in the morning.
- 4:57How do you want it well done? Yeah? Not very busy in
- 5:00here tonight? A yeah, never are You can have a lot of business
- 5:04right, yeah, but it ain't been so good lately. Coppy. Now,
- 5:09yeah, there you are. Say, kid, you haven't seen a
- 5:15couple of guys around here with a truck, have you not tonight? Why?
- 5:19Nothing? Just skip it. We got a customer, kid, come
- 5:26for you, sir. I want to see this copper cop. Yeah,
- 5:29this guy's are fain closed, ain't you? Oh? I copper hey,
- 5:32look out, look out behind you. That'll fix you. You jerdy dick.
- 5:39Hey, what's a big idea? Shit? He say you you blow
- 5:42his head off? You get him? I think throw, I throw.
- 5:49They're just about the time they called the cop. I see, well,
- 5:54it's a lucky thing for you that you made that dive. Kid. Otherwise,
- 5:58we've been trying to solve a double murder. There's no witnesses at all.
- 6:01You think you'd know these men if you saw them again, you bet
- 6:04your life. I'd know these two guys fifty years from now. Good handy
- 6:10those pictures of Seboli and Gotsias in the basketbare right right? Yes, take
- 6:15a look at these two birds, kid, Are those the men who killed
- 6:18Green? Yeah? Both of them? Good guess, capt'n. It wasn't
- 6:24much guessing about it, Mike Andy Green had been failing that gang for a
- 6:27week. They found it out, and Rock Speggotty decided to put the finger
- 6:30on him. Had Rotti. Yeah, he's the head of the Waterfront gang.
- 6:33That lunch room was a perfect spot for the job. At a door
- 6:38at each end. One of these mugs of greens attention from one door,
- 6:42while the other rat slipped in and shot him. That's the way they done
- 6:45it, cap'n. Don't worry. We'll send those two rats to the chair,
- 6:47and this kid here is the one who'll do it for us. You're
- 6:51you're long going to lose your memory when the time comes for you to tell
- 6:55it to the jewelry? Are your kid? No? Sure? Them guys
- 6:58shot a cop and they ought to have to. Hey, good boy,
- 7:00he will make a perfect witness. Take him down and lock him up.
- 7:03Hi, so you can't do that? I That ain't right? Come in?
- 7:25Is he captain? Not at all? Sit right? Thanks? What's
- 7:29on your mind? Mike? Well, I've been talking to that kid we're
- 7:30holding as a witness against the Volley and Gosha. Yeah. Yeah, Well
- 7:34you know he's probably worried about the job of his captain. He's afraid if
- 7:38he's telling in jail and for the child the groups runs the lunch room will
- 7:41have a new boy. Well you know why I'm holding him, don't you,
- 7:44Rally, Yeah, you're afraid he'll run away. Not at all.
- 7:46That kid's on the level. He'll take what do you holding them for them?
- 7:49Because his life wouldn't be worth two cents if he let him out of
- 7:53jail. Oh you mean? I mean that's nothing would suit Gottious and toold
- 7:57him more than to have the state star witness out of the way. Yeah,
- 8:00but we got Savali and Goshes and the jail awaiting time to make any
- 8:03difference. Rocks Padrati to have the kid bumped off an hour after we turn
- 8:07him lose, Maybe he'd do it himself. Deal with himself. Yes,
- 8:11we've got two of his Rodman and the Jug and the Clinton gang got another
- 8:15one of them last week. Rocks is probably getting short handed. There's every
- 8:20possibility that he do the job himself. Gosh, Cap, you've hit the
- 8:24nail on the head. What do you mean? Look for a year almost
- 8:26we've been trying to get the goods on Padrali. Every time we think we
- 8:31got him, hire some clever mouthpiece and slips out enough to yes, this
- 8:37We use the kid as a decoy. Decoy, Yeah, a decoy to
- 8:41get Rocks Padrali out in the open. Listen, let the kid out of
- 8:46jail, send them back to his job. Wilson and I will watch him
- 8:48every minute. We never let him out of our sight. And if Padrali,
- 8:52you're ready, one of his mom make a move against him. We
- 8:56love him red handed. No, nothing doing, Mike right, what's wrong
- 9:00with the idea? Oh? First place is too rusky. Second places wouldn't
- 9:03be fair to the kid. Yeah, but Wilson and I'll watch him every
- 9:07minute. Nah, I'm afraid of it, Mike. But we want to
- 9:09get our hands up for Drolley, don't we. You know that we'll give
- 9:13my play a chance to work. I'll be responsible for the kid. Come
- 9:16on, what do you say, cappen. It's a big risk, yeah,
- 9:20but it's worth it, all right, I'll do it. Yeah,
- 9:26here's an order to the jailer for the kid's release. Trail him every minute,
- 9:28Yes, sir and Mike, Yes sir. Heaven help you if anything
- 9:33happens to that kid. Hello, kids, Well, how they've been treating
- 9:48you? All right? They've been doing all I can for me, I
- 9:52guess, and seating you all right. I can't complain. I do wish
- 9:56they let me out of here, though. It took me three months to
- 9:58find that job at the lunch room. And if i'd back inside of a
- 10:03wake Joe get another boy. He told me that today. That's what I
- 10:05came down to see you about. I've been talking to the captain. He
- 10:09says, you promise not to run away before the trial. He lets you
- 10:13go back to your job. Gee, gee, got it'd be swell.
- 10:16You wouldn't try to take it on the lamb, would you? No,
- 10:20of course not. I want to see those mugs. Get what's coming to
- 10:24him, don't I? All right, kid, get your things. I'll
- 10:28take you to your room and you can get back in your job tonight.
- 10:31Gee. Thanks, that's so all right. Oh here, here's a newspaper
- 10:35got your name in it. You'll probably enjoy reading about it. It tells
- 10:39how you were released and sent back to work. Thanks. I ain't never
- 10:43had my name in the paper before. Well the prope it ain't in there
- 10:48again and in a different story. What's that? Oh? Nothing? Nothing?
- 10:52Come on? Come on here, well the pay chent? What do
- 11:18you want? Force cover? Coffee? Same? Here is coming it up?
- 11:26Yeah? Are anything else? Anything else? Sports? Now? No?
- 11:30Why don't I give it to him and have it over with bot?
- 11:33I'm running this show, all right. But after it was me? Come
- 11:37here ahead? Something else? No? Here? They had a row in
- 11:41here the other night. Yeah, killed the detective. It's in the papers.
- 11:46I got my name and I read it. Did you see this guy
- 11:50get bumped off? Yeah? I was standing right here. They shut him
- 11:54down without giving him a chance. But the cops got him. All right.
- 11:58You've put the finger on it. What do you mean? I mean?
- 12:01You identified them? Yeah? Down at headquarters? Who was easy?
- 12:05How's your health? Kid? Hey that feels fine. You don't look so
- 12:09good to me. Huh, you look sick like you, like you needed
- 12:16a change. I never felt better in my life. Let's kid, you're
- 12:20sick, you need a change your climate. Yeah it's five hundred bucks.
- 12:26Take it and beat it. I don't care where you go, but get
- 12:28out of town. You you you're kidding me. Yeah, wait a minute,
- 12:35take up that dough kid, get out of town. Don't let nobody
- 12:37know where you go, and don't come back. I'll scram gee, I
- 12:43gotta sink this over. We'll make it snappy O. Why monkey with a
- 12:46clown? Let me give it a one gutter? Well, what about it?
- 12:52Kid? No, sir, nothing doing. Listen you. I know
- 12:56what you're trying to dope, But I won't play your game. I'm gonna
- 12:58stay here and I'm gonna see that those dirty rats get what's coming to him.
- 13:03Okay, Spike, do your stuff. Hey, Eric, the bulls
- 13:09is way quick, right, rap that gun fight. He'll get the same
- 13:13thing I bought done. Yeah, I prop it, I'll drop it.
- 13:18What's the matter of my so no cap? The door and my end were
- 13:20stuck or stepping? Did they get the kids? I'm afraid so I saw
- 13:22this gunk pump too japping. I'll get around behind dot com and find out
- 13:26quick. I'm all right, thank god for that sh I'm sorry, kid.
- 13:33I was watching everything, but when I tried to crash through the door
- 13:35back here, it was stuck. It wasn't stuck what. I figured that
- 13:39it was too big a job for me to watch both doors, so I
- 13:41nailed that one up. Well, I'm glad that Rodman missed you, kid,
- 13:45or it has been cracking for both of them. Well he didn't miss
- 13:46me. What do you mean? I had him shyed up when they came
- 13:50in here, and when I was drawn there coughing, I stuck this inside
- 13:54my coat. Houn't this for a bulletproof vest? Look cap? For the
- 13:58love of a waffle drizzle these headquarters, that's a lot of plays. Take
- 14:52the girl of the Michael Talk stations, the operator hood side for her from
- 15:01the line went dead? Hold it you gotta show a call car d All
- 15:05right, what's the dress registered to J W North three too O five Wood
- 15:11Terriers, Apartment three three two O five Wood Terrace, Apartment three. Get
- 15:20signed to my room and to take my desk. I'm going on an investigation.
- 15:24Walk up all right, up there this way? What's the dope of
- 15:41the caller says, and all of some Dane call police headquarters, and then
- 15:43the line went dead. Telephone operator hurts some grives for help or something,
- 15:46and the supervisor called me at the line house tide the door locked? Yeah,
- 15:54well almost These outside doors and apartment houses are locked at night. Ring
- 15:58the bell for the danger. Right there it is. Did you see any
- 16:03why John in the building when we grove up, I thought I was sole
- 16:06all over this side downstairs. Somebody's fully with the locked down with Kenny.
- 16:12This is the woods job my head. I'm always heaving to get up in
- 16:17the middle of the night. All right, all right, stop mumbling to
- 16:19yourself and so us for an apartment three years? Yes, good way,
- 16:22mister captain. Did you bring that guy to life? Knock on the door
- 16:29in right almost think there's nobody in homeless the captain, I will find out
- 16:33about that. You did it. Back to your room and got some clothes
- 16:36on and got back here again. No luck with Kenne you can see anything?
- 16:42Who's the keyhole? Looks like the lights around and there see anything there?
- 16:48I'll beat out the door. Okay, there's a door open down the
- 16:53hall. It was all the rockers you live in this apartment. In the
- 17:00next apartment here, that's all the trouble. Did you hear anything in this
- 17:03apartment a few minutes ago? I know I didn't. Why I don't know.
- 17:07Give us a hand with this door. Okay, what look, lieutenant,
- 17:14there's a woman lying on the floor. Yeah, and she's bounding gags.
- 17:18Quicked up your hand here, could I be assistan? Yeah? Take
- 17:19her p yeah, yeah, hey you know this woman. I know who
- 17:26she is. That's all. This is north And take this knife and cut
- 17:29the fips from her ankles very well. I got the water ed. Okay,
- 17:33well I get it. The bathroom should be right through there. Oh
- 17:36yeah it h I think you just see the rubber wristily with you? Do
- 17:41you think tight her up? It looks to me like is it Get man
- 17:45in a bed in the next roll mine? I get mad in two bullets
- 17:48holding this part. He's going in a bed in there. Here. You
- 17:52take out of missus north right well, right in here, lieutenant, to
- 17:56get the water here there there he is, m h yeah, dead all
- 18:03right to them right through the head. Yeah, the streams and cut around
- 18:07the hook here Robert. It must have come in the room by the window
- 18:11lay all over the all the year mark of a robbery, a duel casey
- 18:18wallet. Yeah, and you better get a call in in this right away.
- 18:21I see if you can scare up a phone in this guy's apartment next
- 18:23door and call in. Got doctor Evans and a couple of fingerprint men out
- 18:26here right away. Well, what's the dope, doctor, It's very evident,
- 18:53Lieutenant. Two shots entering the forehead and passing entirely through the head with
- 18:57the calls death. The man died without loving. Do you think he was
- 19:02shot while he was asleep? Yes, at least everything points to that conclusion.
- 19:06Then that explodes the burglary. I am also no yag, Not even
- 19:11a couple of amateurs are going to shoot a man just for the fun of
- 19:12doing it. They might shoot up the guy they were robbing woke up,
- 19:15but they wouldn't commit murder without cause. What the woman the next room tell
- 19:18you. I haven't talked her yet. When she came to she was hysterical.
- 19:22I thought it best to get your report first and then talk to her.
- 19:26Well, that's all I can tell you until after the auto play.
- 19:27There's one other thing I'd like to know before you go doctor, what's that?
- 19:32How far away from the man's forehead there was the gun held fairly closed
- 19:37a lot over the foot. I see all right, doctor, Thanks,
- 19:40I'll get the autop there report this afternoon when you finish here. Lead by
- 19:44the kitchen door. Well, yeah, I'm going in the next room.
- 19:52Kind of quiet, I'll talk to her. Uh he is a north I'm
- 20:00Lieutenant Marshall. A man in the next room is your husband. I believe
- 20:04that's right. Man. I wanted to just try to be brave and tell
- 20:11us just what happened here tonight. Oh God, let me just try to
- 20:18stop crying. Man, I'm gonna be a lot easier. Right, that's
- 20:23better. Now, just start at the beginning and tell us every Yes,
- 20:29John and I had been to an early shom He was tired and went right
- 20:33to bed in just a minute. So what time was this? Miss noise?
- 20:37About ten o'clock? Go ahead, Well, John went right to bed,
- 20:41not being very sleepy. I sat up for a while to read.
- 20:45I had been reading for perhaps ten minutes or so when I I heard a
- 20:48window open in your husband's room. Yes, I thought it was John and
- 20:53didn't pay much attention. Then I heard voices so I got up to investigate
- 20:59him. Who come along? Come along? So I went into the room
- 21:07and then grabbed me by the throat and pushed me out of the room.
- 21:11I struggled with him, but he threw me down on the sofa and he
- 21:15started choking me. I heard John wake up, and the man who was
- 21:23choking he called to someone in the next room to shut that guy up.
- 21:27I was almost unconscious, but I remember seeing a man standing at the foot
- 21:32of John's bed take out a gun and fire dust. Then I think it
- 21:40some time later, I came to and found that I was tied. The
- 21:44room was so still I knew that something terrible had happened. So I rode
- 21:48off the sofa and worked the gag out of my mouth and upset the telephone
- 21:52again. I remember calling for the police, but I guess I'm not a
- 21:56saint to the game. Was your husband carrying a large sum of money tonight,
- 22:03Why yes, you will. Several hundred dollars had to be and were
- 22:07they jewels in your jewel box? And much value some of them were?
- 22:12Now it looks like a couple of hold up men came in here tonight.
- 22:17Your husband tried to scuffle with him and was shot. Lucky they didn't turn
- 22:21their guns on you. Man. Did you get a very good look at
- 22:23the Linden lady? Oh? Yes, Can you give us a description of
- 22:26these two men? I'm afraid I can't. You see. It was very
- 22:30dark, but surely you must have noticed something about them. Well? Are
- 22:33they were dressed in docks? Houston msked. That's all I don't know is
- 22:41why did John struggle with him? A right man? Just try to calm
- 22:45yourself. You'll have to put yourself together for the inquest. The coroner's jury
- 22:52will hold an inquest, you know, probably in the morning. I suggest
- 22:55you lie down here and try to get some sleep. I'll leave an officer
- 22:59on guard, but I'll try. We'll be back in the morning. I
- 23:03meantime, don't worry. Come on, Ed, Oh just a minute,
- 23:07I wonder if you'd show me just where you were lying when the hold up
- 23:10man was choking. I was lying across the foot of the sofa here like
- 23:17this, and you saw the other bandit shoot your husband. That's all man,
- 23:22Come on, Ed, you'll see in the morning. Is not that
- 23:30Dame's the biggest liar I ever heard? Yeah? No, no, I
- 23:33know it. Come on there, you go to talk to this all on
- 23:36the next apartment here? What's the name on the door? Double? Would?
- 23:45Oh? You stilled up, mister Wood. Yet I couldn't go to
- 23:48sleep after what happened here tonight. Believe me, I am moving the first
- 23:52thing in the morning. Yeah, and perhaps it's a good thing we came
- 23:55in here to see you tonight, to see me. Yes' your mine?
- 23:59By no, not at all? Come in all right. No, I
- 24:04can't understand why you didn't hear those two shots in the next apartment. And
- 24:07I'm mister Woods, I can't either. Perhaps the burglars use a silencer,
- 24:12that may be. How well do you know missus North? I hardly at
- 24:17all. I've only seen her a few times going in and out of her
- 24:19apartment, I see. And mister North I didn't know him either. Now,
- 24:26mister Woods, as near as we can figure out, the shooting took
- 24:30place at ten fifteen. What were you doing at that time? Oh?
- 24:36That will probably explain why I didn't hear the shots. You see. I'm
- 24:40a rabbit radio fan. I was listening to the Philadelphia Symphony. They were
- 24:45playing the Bronze Symphony number four tonight and it's a very ponderous thing, very
- 24:48loud. I probably would have heard the shot even if it'd been fired in
- 24:52this room, right I had. Would you ask missus North who step in
- 24:56every dist minute place? Yeah? Thing lud, But really that's all right?
- 25:02Would It's very nice to have missus North sitting in there all alone with
- 25:04a dead man in the bedroom right in here? All right? Come in
- 25:11his North, get on over here, please? You you know, mister
- 25:15Woods. I believe we've never been introduced. How do you do, mister
- 25:19Woods? How do you do? Oh? That's no way to right?
- 25:23Why don't you too? Get friendly? What do you mean? Go on?
- 25:26Got friendly? That's not the way for sweethearts to act? Why are
- 25:30you? I don't think that you've been pulling the wool over my eyes.
- 25:37That's cry I can siftly say, Missus North, that, without a doubt,
- 25:42you are the poorest actress I've ever seen, And believe me, I
- 25:45have seen some bad one. I won't be a party to this, and
- 25:48I wouldn't want to either if I were in your shoes. I sat down.
- 25:52Now listen, miss North, you steal the beans. Right from the
- 25:56start. You said you heard your husband call out and the medical examiner said
- 26:00that the man was asleep when he was shot. That's my sleep when he
- 26:03was shot. That's mistake number one. Mistake number two is when you said
- 26:08you saw this second man standing at the foot of the bed fire two shots
- 26:11into your husband. There are two things wrong with that. First, you
- 26:15can't see the foot of the bed from the sofa in your living room.
- 26:18And second, a man standing at the foot of your husband's bed couldn't hold
- 26:21a revolver within twelve inches of your husband's head as in this case. I
- 26:25won't stay here annoy, Yes you will. You made some mistakes too,
- 26:29would And the first place you said you were listening to the radio at ten
- 26:33fifteen the night, Yes I was. I was right here in this room
- 26:36listening to the Philadelphia Symphathy. That's all I would. You made your mistake
- 26:38by just one night. You see, I'm somewhat of a radio fan myself.
- 26:42From the Philadelphia Symphony is on tomorrow night, not tonight. Now,
- 26:45we were going to sit right here in this night cozy room with our hands
- 26:49folded in our laps until you two decide which one of you kill that man
- 26:53and which one of you helped to do it. H welcome back. I
- 27:41have to man on that first one. I wasn't terribly impressed with the police
- 27:45in that case. Uh letting a civilian be the bait for criminals and not
- 27:52letting him know he's the bait. It's one thing if you know, brave
- 27:56citizen, Uh volunteers and says absolutely, I'll go back to work, even
- 28:02knowing they might come me down. But good thing he was on his feet
- 28:06anyway, and now we know where Ethelbert got his first job. The voice
- 28:11of the witness in that first case was none other than John Gibson, who
- 28:15played Ethelbert Stacey on Casey Crime Photographer series we will eventually get to And that's
- 28:22only the second voice I recognized in this series so far, the other being
- 28:27Hanley Stafford. The second case was well solved, but it wasn't terribly impressive
- 28:36because you were because basically they took down the incredibly ill prepared and incompetent murderers
- 28:44who just assumed the police won't check anything. All right, Well, that
- 28:48will be all for today. We will be back with you on Monday with
- 28:52Pursuit and then join us back here next Saturday. Two more episodes of Police
- 28:57headquarters coming in nine weeks Dragnet. In the meantime, send your comments to
