- 0:42Speaker 3: Tonight I'm be and we are the e indoors Hello everyone, Hi,
- 0:49Speaker 3: Hi buddy, how are you?
- 0:50Speaker 2: I'm good. How are you doing?
- 0:52Speaker 3: You know, I'm doing very well. It's a beautiful day
- 0:54Speaker 3: here in Minni Sous. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It's always so funny whenever we start. It's just we give,
- 1:03Speaker 2: we give the weather report, and it's.
- 1:06Speaker 1: All I have.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Otherwise makes me laugh. Good. I think that's exciting. We
- 1:13Speaker 2: have our our Minnesota Timberwolves are currently in the playoffs.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, they looked pretty bad last night. It was game
- 1:20Speaker 2: two last night.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, they looked really good. The game before that, so
- 1:25Speaker 3: they looked so who knows. The one thing that.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'm excited about is that that's the worst we've looked
- 1:33Speaker 2: offensively in a minute, maybe ever this while, at least
- 1:38Speaker 2: when we've been all healthy. And the fact that they
- 1:42Speaker 2: only beat us by nine points, Yeah, I feel like
- 1:46Speaker 2: that's not going to happen again.
- 1:48Speaker 3: But fan bases are probably like, oh, because quite the
- 1:52Speaker 3: tale of two cities with those two first games.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So who knows, it's weird, it's weird. Yeah, both Lebron
- 1:58Speaker 2: and Luca just couldn't hit anything towards the end, and
- 2:01Speaker 2: that won't be the case either, who knows, I don't know, but.
- 2:06Speaker 3: To score two hundred next game, like who knows?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Right, but just such a weird like looked like a
- 2:11Speaker 2: completely different team, at least offensively.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Oh yeah, well, first we went from hitting what twenty
- 2:16Speaker 3: one threes to I think there was seven mad for
- 2:19Speaker 3: the whole game between them teams, and we just all
- 2:22Speaker 3: year thirty or something. Yucky, So yucky poopy.
- 2:27Speaker 2: That's one exciting thing, the wild one which.
- 2:31Speaker 3: They split the first two, right, but they've looked good.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I know you don't really watch hockey.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But don't I wish I did, because, yeah, that would
- 2:38Speaker 2: have been exciting to watch that big win. I'm going
- 2:42Speaker 2: to dude, dude, it started a ten to fifteenth central dump.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's awful, super dumb. Tomorrow is exciting because I'm going
- 2:51Speaker 2: to the Twins game with my dad. All fun.
- 2:55Speaker 3: That'll be great, which.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Will be cool, even though the Twins are struggling hard.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was so bad when we talk about
- 3:02Speaker 3: them because I'm like, I there, who I don't really
- 3:04Speaker 3: pay attention to you know, the same sames.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But it's kind of crummy so far, third worst team
- 3:11Speaker 2: in baseball, in all of baseball pretty much up season left,
- 3:15Speaker 2: you know, so much for better or worse, like one
- 3:18Speaker 2: hundred and forty more games.
- 3:20Speaker 3: That's crazy, that's crazy.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Hopefully they'll figure it out. I don't know who knows
- 3:26Speaker 3: fingers either way, it'll be beautiful tomorrow. You guys are
- 3:29Speaker 3: gonna have a nice time for sure. Excited you will
- 3:31Speaker 3: have that. So that's nice. Have you been watching any
- 3:34Speaker 3: films lately?
- 3:35Speaker 2: I have? Thank you for asking. We got sick over
- 3:40Speaker 2: Easter weekend, because that's what we do.
- 3:43Speaker 3: That is that is tradition. I guess at this point we.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Just get sick. So Charlie had gotten strap throat and
- 3:49Speaker 2: had to stay home from school on Friday, and then
- 3:52Speaker 2: Lydia got sick Saturday, but not Strap, which is interesting.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But regardless, we weren't going to going to my folks
- 4:01Speaker 2: for Easter, right, So I brought Charlie, who wasn't contagious anymore,
- 4:06Speaker 2: on Easter Sunday to see the Minecraft movie, which I
- 4:10Speaker 2: know you had talked about wanting to see with us,
- 4:13Speaker 2: and I was like, we're all kind of getting all
- 4:16Speaker 2: your stuff.
- 4:17Speaker 3: What did you guys think?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Well, throughout the movie, my throat started feeling itchy and
- 4:23Speaker 2: I got strapped throat as well.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Oh my god, So I'm glad you didn't invite me though.
- 4:27Speaker 3: There you were right about that.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yes, it's just a bunch of fun over here.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Just share everything.
- 4:34Speaker 4: It was nice spreading the sickness, but yeah, Minecraft movie
- 4:44Speaker 4: was pretty fun.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Jack Black is just straight up being Jack.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Black, silly billy man. I like him.
- 4:51Speaker 2: He just says the text and the most Jack Black
- 4:54Speaker 2: way possible.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I'm sure you've seen it from the previous But at
- 4:59Speaker 2: one point he walks into a room and says, these
- 5:01Speaker 2: are some of my treasures and it's just like you.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It makes that funny. Yeah, just saying it silly. The
- 5:10Speaker 2: plot is pretty thin. I've seen better movies for sure.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Jason Momoa was either really funny or kind of cringey
- 5:20Speaker 2: throughout the movie. But yeah, it's definitely worth checking out.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If you are a fan of Jack Black, you will
- 5:28Speaker 2: have fun.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm excited to see you at some point. It's
- 5:31Speaker 3: gonna be great.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah, there was this one part, so there are these
- 5:36Speaker 2: like mean pigs. They're like of like exactly, there's one
- 5:41Speaker 2: really mean one and to like prove how mean she was,
- 5:45Speaker 2: she like pretty much kills one of these little pigs
- 5:50Speaker 2: and Charlie. That really really upset Charlie. We talked about
- 5:54Speaker 2: that for a long time and it was like a
- 5:58Speaker 2: ten seconds scene.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He was like a sweet little tender boy.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I love it it is. But like the scene it was,
- 6:05Speaker 2: they were looking for somebody or whatever, and but he
- 6:08Speaker 2: sees this little pig that's like doing a drawing and
- 6:13Speaker 2: the drawing is just like this really pretty picture, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: they're like, how is that helping me find whatever? And
- 6:20Speaker 2: then boom and he's gone, and but he was just
- 6:25Speaker 2: wanting to draw.
- 6:28Speaker 3: He just felt love in his heart, just drawing this
- 6:33Speaker 3: beautiful picture.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And oh gosh, I love that kid so much.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I'm just glad that in some small way, having me
- 6:42Speaker 3: as a friend has prepped you for fatherhood, it seems,
- 6:44Speaker 3: because you've had to have the same talk with me,
- 6:47Speaker 3: so you're ready.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Yeah, just a sweet, sweethearted boy.
- 6:52Speaker 3: That's amazing that.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But what what have you been watching?
- 6:57Speaker 3: So? I watched a movie that I liked quite a
- 6:59Speaker 3: lot at Your Behest Last Breath, I watched Nice. Yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 3: you had had such good things to say about it.
- 7:08Speaker 3: This was the diving movie that Rob had talked about
- 7:12Speaker 3: a few episodes ago. I guess I don't remember exactly,
- 7:14Speaker 3: but Woody Harrelson, Simuliu and what's that other guy's name?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Finn Cole is the other dude's name.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he was like the main guy.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, they're sort of the three main folks. This story
- 7:27Speaker 3: is bonkers, like you said, very intense, but a pretty
- 7:32Speaker 3: great movie. I really had a good time watching it.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I thought it was, you know, suspenseful, had a lot
- 7:37Speaker 3: of good humor in it, you know, action stuff. They
- 7:41Speaker 3: made some choices I will never understand. And it's based
- 7:45Speaker 3: off of a real life story. I mean going down
- 7:47Speaker 3: there at all obviously, right, just bonkers. But yeah, then
- 7:52Speaker 3: well I don't want to run anything. It's a great
- 7:55Speaker 3: film and really enjoyable, but if you get like claustrophobe,
- 8:00Speaker 3: it might not be for you. Yeah. I don't really
- 8:03Speaker 3: get that, but I was like, this is awful the
- 8:07Speaker 3: whole time.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't get that too much. But there was that
- 8:10Speaker 2: one movie that was I think it was called Thirteen Lives.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It was about the Chilean Oh.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I never saw that one.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, they were in the cave right, yeah, they to
- 8:20Speaker 2: go Yeah, oh my gods, brutal.
- 8:25Speaker 3: This is kind of in that same ish vein. I mean,
- 8:28Speaker 3: different set for sure, but man, it's just it's wild
- 8:32Speaker 3: what folks do for their jobs, because they they help
- 8:35Speaker 3: repair it's the pipeline, right for for like oil liners
- 8:39Speaker 3: and things, is what they're doing underwater. But yeah, it's
- 8:43Speaker 3: pretty crazy.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Man.
- 8:44Speaker 3: It was kind of fun seeing SIMUELU play a different
- 8:48Speaker 3: kind of character. Yeah, obviously I haven't seen him in
- 8:51Speaker 3: a lot of things, but it was just he's like
- 8:54Speaker 3: a little bit more of a curmudge. Yeah, just like
- 8:59Speaker 3: kind of hard ed the guy in this which was fun. Yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 3: I really liked it. I thought it was super entertaining.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I had a good time with it. You know, if.
- 9:09Speaker 2: You'll probably be streaming here pretty.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Soon it but yeah, I assume it'll be streaming at
- 9:16Speaker 3: some point and.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Gotta be soon.
- 9:17Speaker 3: It was just one of those I saw it after
- 9:19Speaker 3: you had recommended it, and I was like, I do
- 9:21Speaker 3: kind of want to watch that, so I checked it out.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It was fun.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Good, glad you enjoyed it.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Have you been streaming anything? Yes?
- 9:28Speaker 2: I thought it would be worth bringing up that I'm
- 9:30Speaker 2: watching the new John Hamm show. Oh yeah, what a
- 9:34Speaker 2: sense he's in this episode. It's called Your Friends and Neighbors. Right,
- 9:40Speaker 2: he's a rich or something exactly. Yep. It's on Apple
- 9:43Speaker 2: TV plus Fun. It's about a very wealthy broker who
- 9:47Speaker 2: loses his job, can't get a job, he's divorced, is
- 9:52Speaker 2: trying to keep up his like super expensive way of life. Sure,
- 9:57Speaker 2: and he starts stealing from his other wealthy friends.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 10:02Speaker 2: So it's interesting so far. Olivia Munn and Amanda Pete
- 10:06Speaker 2: are the other recognizable folks in it. Onun Yeah, Olivia
- 10:10Speaker 2: Munn is his kind of new fling, and Amanda Pete
- 10:14Speaker 2: is his ex wife.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Amanda Pete, who we've been in the same room with
- 10:17Speaker 3: before you and I. Yes, congrets to us.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Do you remember where congrats at the ConA? She nailed
- 10:24Speaker 2: it a Manda Pete Bradley Cooper. I don't remember the
- 10:27Speaker 2: musical guests.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I don't either, which makes me think it was maybe
- 10:31Speaker 3: they didn't even have one.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes they'll do a comedian or yeah, I don't know.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Remember what caught on the way up?
- 10:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:39Speaker 3: That's pretty wild and she's wonderful, love her she is.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It's all good. But yeah, currently there's only three episodes
- 10:48Speaker 2: out while we're recording this, but it's pretty solid. I'm
- 10:52Speaker 2: into it for now. I'm not one hundred percent sold
- 10:55Speaker 2: on it yet.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to keep on Jevity that show could
- 10:59Speaker 3: have That's my like main question right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Right, it might be a one and done. Yeah, that's cool.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I'm interested in. All those people are really good, so
- 11:09Speaker 3: that's cool.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's been entertaining so far, and there was
- 11:12Speaker 2: a big cliffhanger at the end of Love Those we do.
- 11:17Speaker 2: What have you been streaming?
- 11:19Speaker 3: I finished the series of Daredevil Born Again.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Which oh nice.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I don't know if we call this the third season
- 11:27Speaker 3: the first works because it's a different most recent, Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 3: the most recent, the sort of rehashing. It started out
- 11:36Speaker 3: a little weird for me, but I was enjoying it.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They made one really weird choice at the beginning, which
- 11:42Speaker 3: I won't get into that I hated and.
- 11:45Speaker 2: They hated me too.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I man, I was fully on board with some Daredevil love.
- 11:51Speaker 3: By the end of this season, I really liked it.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I think it's I think it's really an interesting version
- 11:59Speaker 3: or pathway they're going down for this, like branch of
- 12:01Speaker 3: the MCU, which I think is really fun. I also
- 12:06Speaker 3: boy warning to anyone who doesn't like violence and who
- 12:09Speaker 3: might be thinking, like, oh, it's Disney Plus, I bet
- 12:11Speaker 3: they're gonna Tampa down. They do not.
- 12:14Speaker 2: You know, there's some really intense fighting scene anything.
- 12:17Speaker 3: They amped it up, which I was like, I like it,
- 12:22Speaker 3: so I'm not bothered by it. But I was really
- 12:24Speaker 3: surprised that Disney Plus is doing that.
- 12:26Speaker 2: That's pretty well once they introduce a character that's very violent. Man.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Some of those yeah, just yeah. Lots of noises, so
- 12:36Speaker 2: many noises.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Did you end up Did you end up finishing it?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Are you done with this season?
- 12:40Speaker 2: I am close not done, so I'll probably end up
- 12:44Speaker 2: talking about it as well.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yea, yeah, the last episode or last two episodes are
- 12:48Speaker 3: really good. It ends very very strong. I thought, so
- 12:51Speaker 3: it's really fun. It is a little uh, you know,
- 12:54Speaker 3: if you're not if you're having misgivings about the current
- 12:57Speaker 3: political culture in various parts of the world, that might
- 13:00Speaker 3: get a little rough at times. But I thought was
- 13:03Speaker 3: really good. I really liked it. Oh that was fun.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, dude, Vincentinafria just crush it so good.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I'm so glad that they were able to get everyone back,
- 13:14Speaker 3: you know, like that was involved in the old Daredevil.
- 13:17Speaker 3: They got the vibe back because he I feel like
- 13:20Speaker 3: he's going to be too old to play that part soon,
- 13:23Speaker 3: I would imagine.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, he looks I feel like he looks better now
- 13:27Speaker 2: than he did back then.
- 13:29Speaker 3: That is true. That is true.
- 13:30Speaker 2: So maybe he'll always be able.
- 13:32Speaker 3: To act it. You know. It's just the likes of
- 13:35Speaker 3: you know. Yeah, yeah, anyway, so yeah, Daredevil born Again,
- 13:39Speaker 3: Disney Plus check it out. Sure should we do a

- 15:47Speaker 3: to talk about that and it's going to be just
- 15:50Speaker 3: a great time. But we had to get a young
- 15:52Speaker 3: man who who grew up in the mean streets of
- 15:55Speaker 3: wherever he grew up. He's very rough and tumble. I
- 15:58Speaker 3: think we can only agree he's the scourge of the
- 16:01Speaker 3: golf course everywhere that you go. No, it is our
- 16:06Speaker 3: beloved friend. Let's give it up once again for Luke Pierce.
- 16:10Speaker 2: What's up, Luke? What's going on?

- 16:40Speaker 3: it's been a minute. How you been.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I'm doing well, man.
- 16:43Speaker 5: You know Rob's project is keeping me very busy these days.
- 16:48Speaker 5: I love it. Recording from the upstairs office of my
- 16:52Speaker 5: girlfriend's home that I moved in with. I've got a dog,
- 16:55Speaker 5: probably since last time, beautiful podcast.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Little Arnie, Little Arnie, you might be barking.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Yesterday during a video conference where I was also being recorded,
- 17:07Speaker 5: he puked up grass on a carpet and got a
- 17:11Speaker 5: really good video of me being like, no the carpet, no, no, no,
- 17:17Speaker 5: no no. I didn't get him to the hardwood fast enough.
- 17:20Speaker 5: So hopefully you know, I didn't see him eat too
- 17:24Speaker 5: much grass today, so I think we'll be fine during
- 17:26Speaker 5: this recording. But he's in here, lying down sleeping right
- 17:29Speaker 5: next to me.

- 17:39Speaker 3: Well that's great, dude. Also, we want to promote for you.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Promoter one oh one is back, right, We're back.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm limited edition of Promoter one oh one, a
- 17:48Speaker 5: podcast that a friend, Dan Steinberg, and I started back
- 17:51Speaker 5: in twenty sixteen. We had more than two hundred and
- 17:55Speaker 5: thirty episodes and more than three hundred interviews of people
- 17:59Speaker 5: in the live music business, all sorts of walks of life.
- 18:03Speaker 5: Really great anthology of the live music business. It's kind
- 18:06Speaker 5: of like our love letter to the stories and the
- 18:08Speaker 5: people that built the modern music business. So if you
- 18:12Speaker 5: like it, check it out. We just dropped our first
- 18:14Speaker 5: episode back with some friends from Paladin Artists Agency. Dream
- 18:19Speaker 5: Theater's agent.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Was on it.
- 18:21Speaker 5: And then I've got another episode coming up with the
- 18:24Speaker 5: head of AEG, which is the company that owns Coachella
- 18:28Speaker 5: and a lot of venues around the country. So I'm
- 18:30Speaker 5: sure he'll have some really interesting things to say when
- 18:32Speaker 5: he comes on the pod. So Promoter one on one
- 18:34Speaker 5: dot net we couldn't get dot com. We don't have that,
- 18:37Speaker 5: we don't have that dot com budget.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I heard that, Yeah, I heard that.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Luke. I don't think I told you this, but we
- 18:44Speaker 2: had a runner I think it was in Flint, Michigan,
- 18:47Speaker 2: and he was so stoked that I knew you and
- 18:51Speaker 2: he was such a fan of promoter he was geeking out.
- 18:55Speaker 2: It was really fun. That's wonderful to hear.
- 18:58Speaker 5: And we do get a lot of emails and social
- 19:03Speaker 5: media interactions with people that said, like, oh, listen to
- 19:05Speaker 5: this podcast. Has been so informative to how the music
- 19:08Speaker 5: business actually works, and it's a great tool for people
- 19:12Speaker 5: of all walks of the industry. But I get especially
- 19:16Speaker 5: touched by like people that are kind of coming up
- 19:18Speaker 5: in the business looking for a shot, saying like, hey,
- 19:20Speaker 5: I heard this piece of advice in that podcast from
- 19:23Speaker 5: that so and so, and it helped me do this
- 19:26Speaker 5: sort of thing. So it is a great resource, and
- 19:30Speaker 5: I'm glad to hear that there are fans in Flint, Michigan.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, it's really great man.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And talk about I mean, twenty sixteen to now, how
- 19:39Speaker 3: much has the industry changed just in that wind up, that's.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Pretty wilds That's what was kind of a prompt for
- 19:46Speaker 5: a lot of this is that some of it still
- 19:48Speaker 5: holds up, but a lot of it is like people
- 19:51Speaker 5: in different places now, the business done very differently. So
- 19:55Speaker 5: all these conversations, even though a couple of them are
- 19:58Speaker 5: with people we've already interviewed, it's been seven years or
- 20:01Speaker 5: eight years since we've talked to them, and so so
- 20:04Speaker 5: much has changed and we have so much to talk about.
- 20:07Speaker 5: So we could do these interviews all the time, but
- 20:09Speaker 5: we're just doing them once a month, picking off some
- 20:12Speaker 5: kind of high profile people that we want to have
- 20:14Speaker 5: conversations with.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So check it out. And that's everywhere your Spotify, all
- 20:21Speaker 2: the places, Spotify, Apple, all the all the places, all
- 20:24Speaker 2: the spots.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Right on men Promoter one on one, check it out,
- 20:28Speaker 3: check it out. That's fun. Man. Well, we're super happy
- 20:30Speaker 3: to have you here today, and I think we should
- 20:32Speaker 3: just get right into us the fifteenth anniversary of the.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Towel, the fifteen years.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty wild. It's pretty wild. That felt not
- 20:41Speaker 3: that old home. No, but rob will you get us
- 20:44Speaker 3: started with just a rough SYNOPSI sure.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Doug mccrane leads a band of ruthless bank robbers and
- 20:50Speaker 2: has no real attachments except for James, who, despite his
- 20:54Speaker 2: dangerous temper, is like a brother. Everything changes for Doug.
- 20:57Speaker 2: When James briefly takes a hostage bank employee Claire Keysy,
- 21:03Speaker 2: learning that she lives in the gang's neighborhood, Doug seeks
- 21:05Speaker 2: her out to discover what she knows, and he falls
- 21:08Speaker 2: in love. As the romance deepens, he wants out of
- 21:12Speaker 2: his criminal life, but that could threaten Claire.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Nice. Okay, okay, out there, great read. Let's go to
- 21:24Speaker 3: Rotten Toddles and hear what they have to say. Critics
- 21:26Speaker 3: have this coming in at a rock solid.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That is high pressure ash.
- 21:33Speaker 3: It's very very nice. Audience members a little bit below that,
- 21:36Speaker 3: but still quite high. They're a eighty five percent, just
- 21:39Speaker 3: a little surprised by it, like I don't know why
- 21:42Speaker 3: they look it less. That seems weird, but you know
- 21:45Speaker 3: people are weird. They make still very high. Yeah, still
- 21:48Speaker 3: very very high. But more importantly than all that is
- 21:51Speaker 3: what we think. So I think we should get into
- 21:52Speaker 3: our hot take.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Hot take.
- 21:54Speaker 3: That's a hot take.
- 21:56Speaker 2: That's a hot take. The getaway carb.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Is so much okay cool?
- 22:05Speaker 2: Oh oh please, well, oil, there we go, There we go.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I love that. I'll go first on this one. I
- 22:17Speaker 3: like this movie a ton. I can remember going and
- 22:19Speaker 3: seeing it in the theater. I don't remember who I
- 22:22Speaker 3: went what. It was, probably rob if I had to guess.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Back in those days, really fun and interesting movie about
- 22:31Speaker 3: a subculture. I obviously don't know a ton about, you know,
- 22:34Speaker 3: the bank robbers, although I will say one of my
- 22:37Speaker 3: fun facts is I was present for a bank robbery
- 22:41Speaker 3: in real life and had to be interviewed by the FBI.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Crazy when I worked in a.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Bank, it happened. That is the whole story pretty much,
- 22:50Speaker 3: because I didn't know we had been robbed until someone
- 22:53Speaker 3: was talking to the FBI on the phone. That was situation. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 3: it wasn't. It wasn't really that exciting, honestly, except for
- 23:07Speaker 3: the FBI has to come and luckily here in the
- 23:10Speaker 3: Twin Cities we have an FBI office right in town.
- 23:14Speaker 3: But everyone that's present in the bank has to stay
- 23:17Speaker 3: in the bank until they get there. So if you
- 23:20Speaker 3: get caught in like a bank robbery in the middle
- 23:22Speaker 3: of nowhere, screw the rest of your plans. It is
- 23:25Speaker 3: federal law. You have to stay it. Because we had
- 23:27Speaker 3: a bunch of people that were like, I was here
- 23:29Speaker 3: on my lunch break, I gotta go.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Back to work.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Bomb That was like the most exciting part quote unquote, yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 3: so I have been around for bank robbery. It was
- 23:39Speaker 3: less cool than these, although no one died, so maybe
- 23:42Speaker 3: more cool than these.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Way more cool. Yeah, I guess depends on did they
- 23:47Speaker 2: ever find who did it? Do you know? Did you
- 23:49Speaker 2: get any backstory on that?
- 23:52Speaker 3: I think they did, because I think he had done
- 23:54Speaker 3: a couple of places around town.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Okay, but it was.
- 23:57Speaker 3: The funniest thing was talking to the FBI, because you know,
- 24:01Speaker 3: he had to interview everyone there, and he got to
- 24:03Speaker 3: me and I was like, well, here's the thing. I
- 24:05Speaker 3: didn't know what happened until he was already out of
- 24:07Speaker 3: the bank. I don't know. I only know it's a
- 24:11Speaker 3: heat because you said it was a heat. I have
- 24:12Speaker 3: no clue. And he was just like, thank you so much.
- 24:15Speaker 3: People make up stuff a lot, and I was like,
- 24:17Speaker 3: I don't know anything.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I'll just do my job.
- 24:21Speaker 3: So I talked to him for like fourteen seconds total.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It was crazy nice, but that was part of the
- 24:27Speaker 3: bank robbery, at least one that you know of. I
- 24:31Speaker 3: think this movie, though, is super exciting. I think it's
- 24:34Speaker 3: really really fun. I made a slight mistake on this,
- 24:38Speaker 3: well maybe not a mistake. But I watched the extended
- 24:41Speaker 3: version of this.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Some of these extended versions are like a minute or
- 24:46Speaker 3: two longer, right this thirty minutes longer.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Wow wow. I did see that in the trivia that
- 24:52Speaker 2: he originally had it like four hours and then had
- 24:54Speaker 2: to cut it.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Oh, that made more sense later. So hopefully I don't
- 24:58Speaker 3: talk about any scenes or anything that we're the original cut.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Forgive me if I do, but.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I want to see that version.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Though.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it was great. It didn't feel like super long.
- 25:08Speaker 3: You know, sometimes you're like they come that out.
- 25:10Speaker 5: He did the commentary on that too.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Is it not on the one idea? But he probably
- 25:15Speaker 3: does somewhere.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Because his commentary is a really.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I've heard that.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Yeah, But but yeah, I really like this movie. I
- 25:25Speaker 3: think it's super fun. It has entered like our sort
- 25:29Speaker 3: of collective zeitgeist in some big ways. I mean, like
- 25:32Speaker 3: the nun masks are such a cliche now, the like
- 25:36Speaker 3: the scene I assume we will talk about in some
- 25:38Speaker 3: of the lines have really become a part of our
- 25:40Speaker 3: regular everyday life and sort of have lived on after
- 25:44Speaker 3: fifteen years, we find out. So I just think that's
- 25:46Speaker 3: super fun. I think it's a pretty nuanced look at
- 25:50Speaker 3: the lives of these people and some fun characters. I
- 25:53Speaker 3: just I really like it a lot. I think it's
- 25:55Speaker 3: really really fun.
- 25:56Speaker 2: My hot take.
- 25:57Speaker 3: There is one weird edit where the assistant manager of
- 26:02Speaker 3: the bank when they go see him in the hospital,
- 26:04Speaker 3: and maybe this is one of the thinking.
- 26:07Speaker 2: That that's extended I've never seen.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Well they cut it out because the they have a
- 26:14Speaker 3: shot of him from the side where he is clearly
- 26:17Speaker 3: talking and his mouth is not moving at all.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Is happening.
- 26:22Speaker 3: It makes sense now that that was extended.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So that was Victor Garber, right, yes, yeah, so I
- 26:28Speaker 2: always are just like, why did they get Victor Garber
- 26:31Speaker 2: for like a three second thing just to get hit
- 26:34Speaker 2: in the head with a gun.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Right big time?
- 26:37Speaker 2: Like he's a pretty recognizable guy. I couldn't believe that
- 26:41Speaker 2: that makes sense that there's stuff on the cutting ring.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, so thank you for helping me figure out what
- 26:46Speaker 3: I probably should have realized. But you would like the
- 26:48Speaker 3: extended then because you get like a two or three
- 26:51Speaker 3: minute scene with him for sure, Okay, and it's interesting,
- 26:54Speaker 3: but yeah, there's a there's a shot where he's just
- 26:56Speaker 3: not moving his mouth at all. Because of the coverage
- 26:59Speaker 3: they got while he's line, which is pretty great.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Wow.
- 27:03Speaker 3: But yeah, that's my hot take.
- 27:04Speaker 2: This movie, very hot take. I also thought this movie
- 27:09Speaker 2: was awesome when it came out. It's directed by Ben Affleck.
- 27:12Speaker 2: This was his second film he directed after Gone, Baby Gone,
- 27:17Speaker 2: and then he followed this up with the Best Picture
- 27:20Speaker 2: winner Argo. So it's a great director, really is.
- 27:23Speaker 5: I think this movie deserves such like a turning piece
- 27:27Speaker 5: in his career, right because he's like, this is a
- 27:30Speaker 5: couple of years after Gone, Baby Gone, but it's not
- 27:33Speaker 5: that far from like jeely, like he was like a
- 27:35Speaker 5: joke in Hollywood. Well maybe not gone after Gone, Baby Gone,
- 27:40Speaker 5: but like, I think a lot of people wrote off
- 27:43Speaker 5: Ben Affleck during this time, and this like really felt
- 27:46Speaker 5: like a when we look back at the history of
- 27:48Speaker 5: Ben Affleck's career, like one of the big turning points,
- 27:51Speaker 5: you know, right before Argo.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Absolutely, It's based off of the Chuck Hogan called Prince
- 28:00Speaker 2: of Thieves, and Ben Affleck helped write the screenplay. I
- 28:04Speaker 2: saw Cool nominated for one Oscar Best Supporting Actor Oscar
- 28:09Speaker 2: for Jeremy Renner, but he would go and lose to
- 28:12Speaker 2: Christian Bale and The Fighter another. But yeah, the cast
- 28:18Speaker 2: and this is awesome. The cinematography and the car chase
- 28:22Speaker 2: scenes are incredible. They are so well shot. We got
- 28:28Speaker 2: some great monologues for all of the main characters, which
- 28:32Speaker 2: you could tell Ben Affleck probably had a hand in
- 28:35Speaker 2: because everybody got to flex a little bit. I thought
- 28:39Speaker 2: it was very well written. Don't have a ton more
- 28:41Speaker 2: to say. My hottest take, my favorite movie ben Afflecks
- 28:46Speaker 2: done as a lead actor. Wow yeah, wow, Okay, hot tatic.
- 28:55Speaker 2: It's not my favorite ben Affleck film because Goodwill Hunting
- 28:57Speaker 2: I still like more, but sure lead actor, best ben Affleck.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Film and the fore I mentioned Chile of course.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Of course, of course goes without saying.
- 29:06Speaker 3: I think we all agree. Giglee, Yes, nice hot take, buddy, Thanks,
- 29:11Speaker 3: what do you think?
- 29:12Speaker 5: Well, you know, this movie just like really wasn't It's
- 29:16Speaker 5: not just like a solid crime thriller crime thriller movie.
- 29:20Speaker 5: I think the history of Ben Affleck is like very
- 29:23Speaker 5: interesting as you mentioned there too, just he's kind of
- 29:26Speaker 5: at this point in his career where Gonboy Be Gone
- 29:28Speaker 5: was a few years out and that was some real promise.
- 29:31Speaker 5: But the town it's like kind of where he plants
- 29:33Speaker 5: his flag and he's like, okay, I can direct movies right,
- 29:36Speaker 5: and so I loved everything about this movie. The action
- 29:39Speaker 5: was tight, Ormance has felt pretty lived in. It's a
- 29:43Speaker 5: really good pacing, you know, very Boston right, like you
- 29:47Speaker 5: can tell draws on on Ben Affleck's deep personal knowledge
- 29:51Speaker 5: of Boston, like every quarter of every bar of every
- 29:53Speaker 5: alleyway to every monument that's pictured, like feels like he's
- 29:57Speaker 5: got a real grasp on that city. And I really
- 30:01Speaker 5: enjoyed that bit about it, and it reminded me a
- 30:03Speaker 5: lot of like heat, you know, and especially how it
- 30:05Speaker 5: stages its action, how this sound design is. I also
- 30:10Speaker 5: watched this in a theater at a cinemak in LA
- 30:14Speaker 5: and it pains me because I, like, I was like
- 30:17Speaker 5: a year or two out of college when this came out,
- 30:19Speaker 5: and so fifteen years ago feels like forever ago in
- 30:23Speaker 5: a sadder manner of how old I'm getting. But you know,
- 30:27Speaker 5: those scenes in the first shootout where they're in the
- 30:30Speaker 5: car and the guns are firing through the windshield, and
- 30:34Speaker 5: like how big that sound was was insane. So I
- 30:37Speaker 5: don't remember the Oscars that year, but it wouldn't surprise
- 30:40Speaker 5: me if like it was some technical you know, sound
- 30:43Speaker 5: design sort of dominations They got there because it just
- 30:46Speaker 5: it felt so big. I love this sound design in
- 30:48Speaker 5: this movie for sure, and it's you know, it's chaotic
- 30:52Speaker 5: in a way, but it has its choreography about it
- 30:55Speaker 5: that I really liked as well too. You're trying to
- 30:57Speaker 5: watch these guys survive Boston and survive all these things.
- 31:00Speaker 5: So yeah, love the movie. My hot take is that
- 31:04Speaker 5: this is a better movie than Argo, which won the
- 31:07Speaker 5: Best Picture. So I enjoyed this film better than Argo,
- 31:11Speaker 5: for sure, even though that was a good movie too.
- 31:14Speaker 2: It was a good movie, but I'm with you, I
- 31:16Speaker 2: enjoy this one more than that for sure. Yeah.
- 31:19Speaker 5: It felt you know, tighter and to a degree more
- 31:22Speaker 5: personal for Ben Affleck. So you know, Argo is great,
- 31:25Speaker 5: don't get me wrong, but I like this a lot too.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Okay, too bad?
- 31:33Speaker 3: Well, very cool. Should we go talk about our favorite
- 31:35Speaker 3: acting performance and name the dude.
- 31:40Speaker 7: I'm the dude, so that's what you call me, you
- 31:43Speaker 7: know that? Or his dude or duder or you know,
- 31:48Speaker 7: el dud reno. If you're not into the whole brevity to.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Luke, why don't you go first? Who is your dude?
- 31:53Speaker 2: My dude is Jeremy Rinner, Jim Coffee, You love that.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Yes, terrifying, he's tragic, he's like many times, it's kind
- 32:04Speaker 5: of like spring coiled character ready to like kind of
- 32:07Speaker 5: snap at any moment.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Uh.
- 32:09Speaker 5: And I feel like we all were also kind of
- 32:11Speaker 5: getting like the peak Jeremy Rinter, you know, he was
- 32:15Speaker 5: kind of on his way up. I think. Yeah, so
- 32:19Speaker 5: we're catching him on the same kind of like career arc.
- 32:22Speaker 5: We're catching Ben Affleck at the same time, which is.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Kind of cool.
- 32:26Speaker 5: But you know, he plays this really volatile but magnetic,
- 32:31Speaker 5: you know performance on screen. He's the guy that you
- 32:33Speaker 5: like might die for or die because of, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 5: and I really enjoyed his performance. He did a pretty
- 32:39Speaker 5: good Boston accent.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, he got to be more fun because you
- 32:45Speaker 2: just you didn't know what he was going to do. Yeah,
- 32:48Speaker 2: where Ben Affleck was perfect as the lead, he just
- 32:55Speaker 2: it just wasn't as fun, it wasn't as flashy. So
- 32:59Speaker 2: I would also give to Jeremy Renner, but with Ben
- 33:02Speaker 2: Affleck very close behind it, because he completely sells this movie.
- 33:07Speaker 2: And he also had to do quite a bit as well,
- 33:09Speaker 2: so kind of almost a tie. I'm gonna be kind
- 33:13Speaker 2: of weak with that, but yeah, really good acting performances
- 33:17Speaker 2: from both.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that makes a ton of sense though,
- 33:20Speaker 3: because I'm with you, it's almost like a comedy duo
- 33:23Speaker 3: in a way where like one has to be a
- 33:25Speaker 3: little bit more of the straight man. You can kind
- 33:28Speaker 3: of see how wacky this other person is. Like, we
- 33:31Speaker 3: get that in a different way obviously here. So when
- 33:33Speaker 3: I was watching this, I was like, damn, man, I
- 33:36Speaker 3: think it's Jeremy Renner. And I thought I was, you know,
- 33:38Speaker 3: coming up with this hot take a little bit, and
- 33:40Speaker 3: I was like, well, he was nominated for an Oscar
- 33:42Speaker 3: for it, so right, It's not a very unique pick,
- 33:47Speaker 3: and it is not. As it turns out, this is
- 33:49Speaker 3: a clean sweep. But I agree with everything you guys said.
- 33:53Speaker 3: I think he's really wonderful. Also, this film taps into
- 33:58Speaker 3: something that I find I really like within just stories
- 34:01Speaker 3: in general, is just like someone who's not like lawful good,
- 34:06Speaker 3: but does still have a code about them, you know,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and how they're living. Ben Affleck's character definitely has that,
- 34:12Speaker 3: and I think even Jeremy Renner, he's a little more chaotic,
- 34:15Speaker 3: but he's still like, we take care of our people,
- 34:18Speaker 3: we handle business when we need to handle it, loyal.
- 34:21Speaker 2: To a fall.
- 34:21Speaker 5: I think even like the maybe it's like the inverse
- 34:25Speaker 5: of it in John Ham's character, like Prowley, like he's
- 34:28Speaker 5: got this ethics, but he wants to win, you know,
- 34:31Speaker 5: and you can see him kind of push that a
- 34:33Speaker 5: little bit. So I feel like it kind of plays
- 34:35Speaker 5: in a ying ying yang sort of code there.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Love that it's kind of old westerny actually, now that
- 34:41Speaker 3: you say that in that way where you're like, well,
- 34:43Speaker 3: the bad guy is the one who like who should
- 34:46Speaker 3: be wearing the white hat and who you know, that
- 34:48Speaker 3: kind of trope. Yeah, that's a super good call. I
- 34:50Speaker 3: like that. But Jeremy Renner, for all the reasons you
- 34:53Speaker 3: guys said, he's just he's unhinged in this movie. And
- 34:56Speaker 3: like he said, Luke, the sip of soda that he
- 34:59Speaker 3: takes so fun, it's the best choice. I don't know
- 35:03Speaker 3: that's whoever came up with that.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Yeah, the pop guy for like leaving that out or
- 35:07Speaker 5: whatever it was, you know.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Right, so so good, just like he's like, well, I'm
- 35:12Speaker 3: just gonna enjoy what I can and screw it, you know.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Like I just think that's such a wonderful little bit there.
- 35:18Speaker 2: So I wish he would have been like oh diet. Yeah,
- 35:21Speaker 2: it's just something, you know, slice, what are you doing it?
- 35:29Speaker 2: Let's get this away? Nothing left now?
- 35:36Speaker 3: But yeah, so clean sweep with you know a plus
- 35:39Speaker 3: one there for Ben Affleck, I think.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he was just so good. Well, there were some
- 35:44Speaker 2: really good supporting roles. Why don't we go and pick
- 35:47Speaker 2: the this one?
- 35:52Speaker 5: Look all right, So I'm gonna be a little weak
- 35:54Speaker 5: here too, and probably kind of throw a tie and
- 35:57Speaker 5: I and I like to come to this podcast and
- 36:00Speaker 5: some obscure performances that are also great for this, and
- 36:03Speaker 5: I think one of these maybe Obscurish. One of them
- 36:07Speaker 5: for sure is Obscurist. I think it probably is going
- 36:09Speaker 5: to make some lists. But the other one, and the
- 36:10Speaker 5: first want to talk about is Pete Posts the Weight
- 36:12Speaker 5: with Ferbie. Yes, dude is mine with yeah, I mean
- 36:17Speaker 5: just like he's got this. He's Shakespearean gravitas that he
- 36:22Speaker 5: brings to everything. He's menacing and cold is you know,
- 36:27Speaker 5: his monologue about Doug's mom is insane, and then just
- 36:31Speaker 5: like down to the end where he you know, the
- 36:33Speaker 5: shootout is crazy. And I know Pete passed away like
- 36:38Speaker 5: probably not long after this film, right like probably a
- 36:40Speaker 5: few years later, and so what a great final one
- 36:44Speaker 5: of his performances still leave us all with right.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Eleven, so yeah, shortly thereafter, yeah, next year and.
- 36:51Speaker 5: By this round two is actually George Carroll who plays Gloonesy,
- 36:56Speaker 5: and I just love this character. He's a kind of
- 36:59Speaker 5: the glue guy keeps the whole crew together, you know,
- 37:02Speaker 5: from that first scene whether or not in masks and
- 37:05Speaker 5: driving in the hockey rink to be like you know,
- 37:06Speaker 5: he just delivered so many funny lines like he didn't
- 37:09Speaker 5: bring a mask, or that's how you drive a car,
- 37:12Speaker 5: or just like story line of cocaine off of a
- 37:15Speaker 5: CD during the money laundering kind of monologue. I just
- 37:20Speaker 5: think it's like the sense of humor and then kind
- 37:23Speaker 5: of the way that he goes out where he's kind
- 37:24Speaker 5: of like I'll be good and busts his way through
- 37:27Speaker 5: there and then ends up getting shot out. I really
- 37:29Speaker 5: just like that character, and I think he's a good
- 37:32Speaker 5: bit of humor and like was a loyal due towards
- 37:35Speaker 5: the end and played like a Boston you know row
- 37:39Speaker 5: that held it down to the end. So it's kind
- 37:41Speaker 5: of darkly funny but still human. And I really I
- 37:44Speaker 5: got to get that guy props because I feel like
- 37:46Speaker 5: he probably is not going to get called out for
- 37:48Speaker 5: something else.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Good call, dude, I love that. Yeah, Pete postal Thwaite
- 37:53Speaker 2: was for sure. He crushes every bit of screen time
- 37:59Speaker 2: that he had, which is limited.
- 38:01Speaker 3: He gets more in the extended as well. Great.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he just man, just an old guy with that face.
- 38:11Speaker 3: I'd love It's perfect though.
- 38:14Speaker 2: That line always killed me because it was like he
- 38:18Speaker 2: is kind of If I had to pick a runner up,
- 38:27Speaker 2: I'd probably say Rebecca Hall. I thought she did a
- 38:29Speaker 2: good job as Claire Keysy. She seemed genuinely scared when
- 38:34Speaker 2: she had to be a hostage and then was super
- 38:37Speaker 2: mad finding out who Ben Affleck really was. Yeah, and
- 38:42Speaker 2: a good, good love interest.
- 38:45Speaker 3: I love a good job. I thought John Hamm was
- 38:49Speaker 3: great in this movie. I know we kind of already
- 38:52Speaker 3: mentioned him, but he's just really good. I don't know.
- 38:55Speaker 3: This was the first time I was like, oh, okay,
- 38:58Speaker 3: this guy. I mean I think he done Madmin?
- 39:01Speaker 2: Right?
- 39:01Speaker 3: What was his show mad Man?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Yeah? Mad Men?
- 39:03Speaker 3: That had been out already, right, I appreciate at this point. Ye,
- 39:07Speaker 3: I never watched that show, so I missed that one.
- 39:09Speaker 3: But she was the one where I was like, oh,
- 39:11Speaker 3: he could do kind of a number of things, because
- 39:13Speaker 3: he's kind of funny in it too, you know at points,
- 39:16Speaker 3: and he's got some charisma to him.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I was glad he didn't do like the Boston accent.
- 39:21Speaker 2: He does it really hard in one scene, but I
- 39:23Speaker 2: think it's just to like mimic them.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Yeah, he's almost like making fun of them almost. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 39:31Speaker 3: exactly exactly. So love him. Also, I always think of
- 39:37Speaker 3: Blake Lively with this film. I think she does a
- 39:39Speaker 3: great job as a very like a character who could
- 39:43Speaker 3: be a care picture very easily, and she is right
- 39:47Speaker 3: like she fits the stereotypes, but I think she brings
- 39:51Speaker 3: a little something extra to that role that maybe wouldn't
- 39:54Speaker 3: be there if everyone did it. So I always really
- 39:56Speaker 3: like her portrayal in this. I think it's it feels
- 39:59Speaker 3: very possible that that person really exists, which is right.
- 40:04Speaker 5: He does a great job in that for sure. She
- 40:07Speaker 5: kind of stayed static for me as a character throughout it,
- 40:10Speaker 5: you know, kind of getting used to the end, which
- 40:12Speaker 5: is probably why I didn't throw on there. But she
- 40:14Speaker 5: delivers a great performance. Should knock a writing for for
- 40:18Speaker 5: what she is in the story, right, She does a
- 40:20Speaker 5: great job.
- 40:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so I really like that. Anyone else have any
- 40:26Speaker 3: runners up?
- 40:27Speaker 2: It was just cool seeing Chris Cooper. I know he
- 40:29Speaker 2: only had one scene. I love Chris Cooper. Yeah, it's
- 40:35Speaker 2: great and he has he has one scene and he
- 40:38Speaker 2: gets a pretty good monologue. Yeah. They just wrote these
- 40:41Speaker 2: scenes so well.
- 40:42Speaker 5: And it's a pretty good line.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:44Speaker 5: It ties back to the end, right and with.
- 40:47Speaker 2: The yeah exactly. Yeah, but that was all I wrote down.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that Titus well of her guy is pretty good
- 40:58Speaker 3: in this too.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I like the FBI agent.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I like him. He's fun. I don't what is
- 41:04Speaker 3: he in? He was in a TV show?
- 41:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been boss.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, totally do I think what else?
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 41:16Speaker 3: I like that guy. I think he's he's interesting and
- 41:18Speaker 3: he was pretty fun in this too.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Nice. Well, why don't we go and pick our
- 41:23Speaker 2: favorite scene and let's choose the dingus so is quite simple, really,
- 41:29Speaker 2: dingus dingus.
- 41:30Speaker 3: I can talk about my dingas all night long. What
- 41:34Speaker 3: do you got for this one?
- 41:34Speaker 4: Luke?
- 41:35Speaker 5: Okay, I think this is probably an obvious one, and
- 41:38Speaker 5: I hope it's not, you know, stamping out any other.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Discussions on other things.
- 41:42Speaker 5: But the Finnway High scene, you know.
- 41:46Speaker 3: It's amazing, right, so good.
- 41:48Speaker 5: Uh, it's hence it's emotional, it's like a war sequence
- 41:53Speaker 5: at times, you know, poetic setting. It's the Cathedral of Boston,
- 41:58Speaker 5: Like how how could you not really love it? And
- 42:01Speaker 5: I had kind of a sort of runner up, which
- 42:03Speaker 5: was the confrontation between Doug and Jim outside the cemetery,
- 42:11Speaker 5: and and they get in their fight and there's one
- 42:15Speaker 5: little bit of like flashback stuff that I don't really
- 42:17Speaker 5: love where he's talking about when he went back and
- 42:20Speaker 5: killed Brennan Lahy and they flashed back to that, and
- 42:23Speaker 5: I don't.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Love that part of it.
- 42:24Speaker 5: But what I noticed in rewatching it and prep for
- 42:27Speaker 5: the podcast was that's kind of like the last time
- 42:29Speaker 5: they really have a conversation the two of those characters.
- 42:32Speaker 5: And then you know, before the heist, it's like it's
- 42:35Speaker 5: almost like a soft goodbye, right without actually saying anything
- 42:39Speaker 5: to it. So I kind of noticed that on the
- 42:42Speaker 5: rewatch of this one, I was like, you know, remember
- 42:45Speaker 5: the point of lines from Jeremy Renner about waiting forever
- 42:48Speaker 5: and Walpole and and all those things. But what I
- 42:51Speaker 5: did notice is they really don't they don't have another
- 42:53Speaker 5: scene together that's not involved you know, shoot him out
- 42:56Speaker 5: sort of thing at that point. So you know, it's
- 42:59Speaker 5: just heartbreaking as it is. Since here in a lot
- 43:02Speaker 5: of that scene and really enjoyed it.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah, those were great. I definitely had the Fenway
- 43:09Speaker 2: shootout way up there, I think on this and I
- 43:13Speaker 2: was ready to pick that number one. But I think
- 43:16Speaker 2: that police chase in the Nuns costume, so I think
- 43:22Speaker 2: that is like the most intense part for me, especially
- 43:26Speaker 2: when they all get out to switch cars and they
- 43:29Speaker 2: see the cop looking at them and then he just
- 43:32Speaker 2: turns his head like a thing. Like when I think
- 43:38Speaker 2: of this movie, I think of them in those Nun
- 43:41Speaker 2: outfits in that cop across the street. But just dude,
- 43:46Speaker 2: the car chases in this we're so awesome. I didn't
- 43:51Speaker 2: remember how tight they were.
- 43:53Speaker 3: I know it makes because I think we did a
- 43:55Speaker 3: draft of favorite car chases recently and I was like, oh,
- 43:59Speaker 3: maybe we should. I can't remember if anyone picked the
- 44:01Speaker 3: town or not.
- 44:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it's done on the budget. They got it done
- 44:06Speaker 5: on right, Like That's one One thing I also remember
- 44:09Speaker 5: about this film is that I think it was like
- 44:11Speaker 5: only like a fifty or sixty million dollar production budget
- 44:14Speaker 5: for like something crazy at the time where they're making
- 44:16Speaker 5: you know, Batman begins for two hundred million dollars, right, Like,
- 44:19Speaker 5: there's a lot of action that looks big. It's choreographed,
- 44:23Speaker 5: there's explosions and gunshots, and like didn't cost that much, which.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Is I probably had to close Boston streets for days
- 44:31Speaker 2: and days.
- 44:32Speaker 3: This actually says. I mean, I don't know how accurate
- 44:35Speaker 3: this number is on IMDb, but it's just thirty seven million.
- 44:39Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, that's even cheaper than that. That's insane
- 44:42Speaker 5: to think about for an action movie, right.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, even just with all the like gun play
- 44:48Speaker 3: and stuff that, you know, just that Yeah, let alone,
- 44:51Speaker 3: that's really interesting. I love that. Uh. I'm okay with
- 44:56Speaker 3: picking anything honestly because I agree with all of you guys.
- 45:00Speaker 3: One thing I wanted to say that Luke in the
- 45:02Speaker 3: Fenway scene, just you talking about the the sound production
- 45:07Speaker 3: design for this, when they put the gun in the
- 45:10Speaker 3: armor car and shoot it, that always stands out to
- 45:13Speaker 3: me because it's just like cuckoo, you know, like it's
- 45:16Speaker 3: so present. I don't know, whatever they did there was
- 45:19Speaker 3: so cool that when you said that, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 45:22Speaker 3: I do think of that every time. Yea that's so great,
- 45:26Speaker 3: so great. I think if I was gonna pick something
- 45:30Speaker 3: besides what you guys picked. Just to say another one,
- 45:33Speaker 3: the line of this movie for me is the we're
- 45:37Speaker 3: going to go somewhere, We're gonna hurt some people. You
- 45:40Speaker 3: can never ask me anything about it, you know that
- 45:42Speaker 3: that whole scene of him just agree, He's just like, yeah,
- 45:47Speaker 3: let's go, let's let's roll out. Then they go to
- 45:49Speaker 3: the folks place, they you know, obviously assault them and
- 45:54Speaker 3: all these things, but we see like the little bit
- 45:58Speaker 3: of friction between them still too, right, because he you know,
- 46:01Speaker 3: goes farther than he needs to go, which he's shown
- 46:03Speaker 3: in a couple other scenes too. I just love that
- 46:05Speaker 3: whole That whole little sequence is really really fun.
- 46:08Speaker 5: It was really good a lot.
- 46:10Speaker 3: And there's an alternate ending that makes that scene more
- 46:14Speaker 3: important I learned looking through the trivia.
- 46:18Speaker 2: So but yeah, it also showed like this guy, you
- 46:20Speaker 2: just don't know what this guy is going to do. Yeah,
- 46:22Speaker 2: he's crazy, right, he's going.
- 46:23Speaker 5: To his mask off, you know, the whole thing.
- 46:26Speaker 2: What a crazy guy, crazy dude. Absolutely another I guess
- 46:32Speaker 2: I would add this to the shootout scene, but just
- 46:34Speaker 2: we had already talked about it. Renner's death scene is
- 46:36Speaker 2: just it's the best. Yeah, it's the best. Yeah, that
- 46:40Speaker 2: sip of soda is just perfect.
- 46:42Speaker 5: And I don't know if you notice, like I noticed
- 46:44Speaker 5: this a lot in musicians, especially like guitarist, the left handedness.
- 46:49Speaker 5: Jeremy Renner is left handed, just like, how weird it
- 46:52Speaker 5: kind of looks on screen because he's caring in the
- 46:55Speaker 5: bag and then he's firing a Tech nine with the
- 46:57Speaker 5: left hand, but even like the rifle side. It just
- 46:59Speaker 5: like something about that. Every time I see in my brain,
- 47:02Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, like, it's kind of a weird way
- 47:04Speaker 5: to be standing and firing, you know, your checker fingers,
- 47:06Speaker 5: your left fingers compared to ninety percent of people being
- 47:09Speaker 5: your right hand, so right, Yeah.
- 47:12Speaker 3: That's funny because I definitely noticed it, but I am
- 47:14Speaker 3: left handed, so I didn't think it was weird. I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 47:17Speaker 3: that makes sense. I would just be like, oh well,
- 47:21Speaker 3: but yeah, that's great.
- 47:23Speaker 2: And the only other scene that I wrote down is
- 47:25Speaker 2: just going back and killing Fergie at the flower shop
- 47:28Speaker 2: is just so great, so great, that horrible stuff that
- 47:34Speaker 2: he said to it, just like this is awesome.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved that.
- 47:40Speaker 5: All good scenes.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Also, that first scene like as like a cold open
- 47:45Speaker 3: kind of scene, really fun. You go right into that
- 47:48Speaker 3: first robbery, all those things we have like OxT you
- 47:52Speaker 3: know that says overrepresented, there's all these crazy people from
- 47:56Speaker 3: this one part of town and all that kind of stuff.
- 48:00Speaker 5: One crazy line for one quote from that. I wish
- 48:03Speaker 5: I wrote that down. I'm like so proud to be here.
- 48:07Speaker 5: This place literally might have killed me, but just so yeah, Charlestown,
- 48:11Speaker 5: right like.
- 48:12Speaker 2: In the opening quote.
- 48:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, there's one scene that I literally.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Ruined my life. Yes, yes, there's one scene.
- 48:24Speaker 5: That I don't know if in merit's this sort of
- 48:28Speaker 5: you know, presentation on the dingus here, but I really
- 48:31Speaker 5: enjoyed it, which was the it's kind of a transition
- 48:34Speaker 5: scene during an AA meeting where the strings come in
- 48:38Speaker 5: and there's a Boston guy who like very very Boston
- 48:41Speaker 5: stands up and tells his experience, and I think it's
- 48:44Speaker 5: that seems just like beautiful, this guy talking to his wife.
- 48:48Speaker 5: But it's also a really great character development for Ben Affleck,
- 48:50Speaker 5: who's like, you know, they mentioned him not drinking in
- 48:53Speaker 5: a bar scene, but I think that comes after and
- 48:56Speaker 5: so I clearly here's this guy who's really trying to
- 48:58Speaker 5: get away from all all this Boston stuff, the drugs,
- 49:01Speaker 5: that the booze everything here, like going to an AA
- 49:04Speaker 5: meeting and then like just a very authentically you know,
- 49:07Speaker 5: showcasing it in Boston in whatever that the rink was,
- 49:11Speaker 5: which comes back to play again and they tie the
- 49:13Speaker 5: strings in at the end. So I really I really
- 49:15Speaker 5: like that little transition scene too.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great one, good call. But I would
- 49:21Speaker 2: be great choosing the fen we shoot out, especially if
- 49:25Speaker 2: we add Renner's death scene is.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, which I think is fair, right, like all
- 49:30Speaker 3: that is so good, so good. Yeah, I love that chosen.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Sweet. Well, let's let's talk about some of these quotes,
- 49:40Speaker 2: and let's show me the my name, show me the
- 49:42Speaker 2: my name, show me.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Luke, you want to go first with quotes?
- 49:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I've got a couple here, I wrote down.
- 49:55Speaker 5: Of course you you already hit it bugs, but I'm
- 49:58Speaker 5: gonna need your help. I can't tell you what it is.
- 50:00Speaker 5: You can never ask me about it. Later, we're going
- 50:02Speaker 5: to hurt some people whose car are we taking? Just
- 50:06Speaker 5: so good love, such a good line.
- 50:08Speaker 2: It kind of felt like something from Goodwile Hunting too.
- 50:12Speaker 5: Yes, I love that. That love that that line. I
- 50:17Speaker 5: like the the not around crew line from John hamm
- 50:21Speaker 5: Oh sure, you know.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I feel like that got uh.
- 50:24Speaker 5: You know, he had some good monologues and some punchy moments,
- 50:27Speaker 5: and I think that was one that I really enjoyed. Uh.
- 50:30Speaker 5: And then I liked, uh. There was one line from
- 50:35Speaker 5: ferg from the from the Florist where he's talking about
- 50:40Speaker 5: how he's got these plans from the guy that he's
- 50:43Speaker 5: been exploiting for horse betting, and he talks about Robin
- 50:48Speaker 5: the Cathedral Boston, priceless. And I went back into little
- 50:54Speaker 5: research before this MasterCard was running those commercials like Insane
- 50:58Speaker 5: between like six and twenty ten, so I feel like
- 51:00Speaker 5: everyone must have been like, oh my god, like a
- 51:03Speaker 5: wine to deliver. I remember like feeling something like that
- 51:07Speaker 5: when I saw for the first time. I'm like, oh,
- 51:08Speaker 5: that's very very clever right there.
- 51:11Speaker 2: So yeah, I like that those lines absolutely. Man, those
- 51:15Speaker 2: are great. When Doug goes to the flower shop, he's
- 51:21Speaker 2: remember who clipped your nuts for you? That's great.
- 51:25Speaker 3: It's such a cool line.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Pulls the trigger. I love that. The slow walk over them,
- 51:31Speaker 2: yeah so good. I love when John Ham's like Coughlin,
- 51:37Speaker 2: throw it on your weapon. That was just a line reading. Really,
- 51:48Speaker 2: I already said that you're an old guy with that face,
- 51:50Speaker 2: so all those glory years are behind you. I love
- 51:53Speaker 2: that so good. Well, and I thought it was kind
- 51:58Speaker 2: of fun. We got a little insight on Coughlin. She's like,
- 52:02Speaker 2: did you say your name was Jim or Jim. He's like, well,
- 52:05Speaker 2: it's kind of both. The teachers used to always say, here,
- 52:08Speaker 2: take this one. He's a gem. It's like a nice one,
- 52:12Speaker 2: kind of fun. Ye, what did you have?
- 52:15Speaker 3: Bukes a really funny one. I think it was Luke
- 52:19Speaker 3: one of your one of your teaches that said it.
- 52:23Speaker 3: But when he goes they're being interviewed by the FBI
- 52:28Speaker 3: and he's like, I'm trying to make the sound authentic, authenticious.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's like, what did you say? So good?
- 52:38Speaker 3: I love that so much. That really cracked me up.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Authentious.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Yeahs. Also, when they're up in the in the room,
- 52:47Speaker 3: you know, beating up those guys who were yelling at her,
- 52:51Speaker 3: he shoots him in the leg at one point, and
- 52:54Speaker 3: then he goes, oh, there goes college sokka, Which that
- 52:58Speaker 3: was really fun. This guy's unhinged in the best ways.
- 53:05Speaker 3: I love when she was talking to Ben Affleck and
- 53:08Speaker 3: she was like, don't they pay you to fight in hockey?
- 53:11Speaker 3: And she's like he was like, not your own team.
- 53:16Speaker 3: That's pretty great, let's see. Oh and then one John
- 53:21Speaker 3: ham one that I liked was Jesus Henry oxy Guns.
- 53:25Speaker 3: It's like a towny Christmas again. He got to say
- 53:31Speaker 3: some stuff that was like more charismatic than I thought
- 53:33Speaker 3: he was at the time. Uh, what else do I oh?
- 53:41Speaker 3: In the sunny day stuff, I really like that. So
- 53:43Speaker 3: now in really sunny days, I think of someone dying
- 53:45Speaker 3: and I.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Was just like, damn, damn that is that comes straight
- 53:50Speaker 2: random from the book. Though I don't know Luke he
- 53:53Speaker 2: read the book. He did read the book, and.
- 53:57Speaker 5: Claire's character is a little bit different in the book,
- 54:00Speaker 5: and I don't remember, like it's a different ending. I'll
- 54:04Speaker 5: just say that, yes, and so it doesn't result in
- 54:07Speaker 5: him getting away. I'll leave it at that. I don't
- 54:11Speaker 5: want to spoil the book because it's a great read.
- 54:14Speaker 5: But the little scene back and forth from the binoculars
- 54:18Speaker 5: to the windows, like that doesn't happen.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, gotcha, Okay, but that was fun seeing that
- 54:24Speaker 2: line come back during that. Ye, do you think it's
- 54:28Speaker 2: as good? Do you think the movie is as good
- 54:29Speaker 2: as the book or the book is better than the movie.
- 54:33Speaker 5: You know, I watched this movie and then went out
- 54:36Speaker 5: and read the book because I loved it in theaters.
- 54:40Speaker 5: Was it a time in life where I was thinking
- 54:42Speaker 5: more about working in film than the music and would
- 54:45Speaker 5: do this all the time, and it really enjoyed the book.
- 54:48Speaker 5: It's like way more into the psychology of Doug McCrae,
- 54:53Speaker 5: slight differences in some of the characters. Claire is like
- 54:57Speaker 5: a little less malleable than what she is, Like I
- 55:01Speaker 5: feel like in this one, Ben Affleck kind of like
- 55:03Speaker 5: bats his eyes and she falls in love. And in
- 55:07Speaker 5: the books it's in fact there's like a little bit
- 55:09Speaker 5: of a relationship with Adam John Hamm's character in the
- 55:13Speaker 5: book and then a very different ending but still like
- 55:16Speaker 5: great vivid jumps off the page to the agu for
- 55:19Speaker 5: all the all the action scenes. So it's it's it's
- 55:22Speaker 5: a great read. I would highly recommend, and I think
- 55:24Speaker 5: it won a bajillion awards in the year that came out,
- 55:28Speaker 5: which is like four oh five.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Cool.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Go back and check that out.
- 55:33Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, that's cool. Anyone else have any other quotes?
- 55:38Speaker 2: I feel like I could do so many of the monologues,
- 55:40Speaker 2: but I just didn't really do it justice. But I
- 55:43Speaker 2: really loved the peat postal twite one talking about you know,
- 55:47Speaker 2: he went the chemical way on his mother and gave
- 55:51Speaker 2: her a taste and all that just was so brutal, brutal.
- 55:56Speaker 2: And he ends it with you know, if there's a heaven, son,
- 55:58Speaker 2: she ain't in it.
- 56:00Speaker 5: Oh God, rough, brutal, and you know, talks about Boston
- 56:05Speaker 5: streets and hang herself on Melanie cast Boulevard. I'm like,
- 56:08Speaker 5: oh god, it's terrible. There was one line and it
- 56:12Speaker 5: reminds me of the Luis k joke about the magic
- 56:15Speaker 5: mic line about saying, I see a lot of breakers,
- 56:18Speaker 5: are you know?
- 56:19Speaker 2: Around here?
- 56:19Speaker 5: Because I was doing this all weekend with you and
- 56:22Speaker 5: your boys didn't just roll over a star market over
- 56:25Speaker 5: in Martin for a box a quarters. I've been saying
- 56:27Speaker 5: like box of quarters around the house, Like if you
- 56:31Speaker 5: need a phrase to drop into a Boston accent, I
- 56:34Speaker 5: think box.
- 56:35Speaker 2: A good one. It's a really good one. Whenever I
- 56:39Speaker 2: think of Goodwill hunting the judge in that has this
- 56:42Speaker 2: is a really small scene but you hit a coop
- 56:46Speaker 2: and how he says, you hit a cop and you
- 56:48Speaker 2: got a copy. That's always the one that sticks. There's another,
- 56:54Speaker 2: you know, sehn hamline.
- 56:55Speaker 5: He gets to deliver a kind of making fun of
- 56:58Speaker 5: the town's right, so in a box of cardus. I
- 57:02Speaker 5: feel like Karen heard me say that fifteen times this
- 57:05Speaker 5: past weekend.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Just loved it. That's awesome, that's great. Well, well, yeah,
- 57:12Speaker 2: why don't we move on to bugs? Boohoo moments? Wow,
- 57:16Speaker 2: the crying game. I don't think you cried too much
- 57:20Speaker 2: in this, at least I didn't. The one that I
- 57:28Speaker 2: was thinking of is when Blake Lively comes to Ben
- 57:33Speaker 2: Affleck's hotel room and is kind of begging him to
- 57:39Speaker 2: go with him. It's like, why can't I change Dougie, Yeah,
- 57:44Speaker 2: and begging to go with him. That's uh yeah, I
- 57:48Speaker 2: thought that was great.
- 57:49Speaker 3: That did not get me to cry.
- 57:50Speaker 5: I got one that because I teared me up a
- 57:53Speaker 5: little bit, which was at the end where Doug leaves
- 57:57Speaker 5: the letter in the bag of cash and then this
- 58:00Speaker 5: strings pull up and it points to Doris McCrae, his
- 58:04Speaker 5: mom little at the ice n redone and kids are
- 58:11Speaker 5: back in it and all those things that strings and
- 58:14Speaker 5: then the mom and had just you know, obviously killed Fergh.
- 58:18Speaker 5: That scene got me choked up a little bit, so
- 58:20Speaker 5: I thought bugs might nice and I'm going on there, that's.
- 58:22Speaker 3: A good one. That one definitely got me for sure.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Nice for sure. Uh did the A one get you?
- 58:29Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Maybe it's just the strings like that though, but it
- 58:33Speaker 3: didn't get me to cry. Yeah, Uh, there's only one
- 58:37Speaker 3: other one. Well maybe I guess too. It's it's the
- 58:43Speaker 3: sunny days thing and then her calling back to that
- 58:46Speaker 3: basically oh at the end, Yeah, I liked I don't know,
- 58:52Speaker 3: I hear what you're saying, rap where you were Like,
- 58:54Speaker 3: it's kind of jumped out of nowhere from me, but
- 58:56Speaker 3: I liked it in this one for some reason. It
- 58:58Speaker 3: was sort of both of them understanding that this was
- 59:04Speaker 3: special but also not meant to be. And I don't know,
- 59:08Speaker 3: that just hit me right that day. So it got
- 59:10Speaker 3: me the first time she tells the story, because it's
- 59:13Speaker 3: just kind of that's her first I feel like that's
- 59:16Speaker 3: the first time we see from him like, oh, you
- 59:19Speaker 3: don't have to be maladjusted, but you can still have
- 59:22Speaker 3: in your life, you know, kind of deal and I
- 59:25Speaker 3: thought that was I thought that was important for him
- 59:27Speaker 3: as a character to hear and also just a cool
- 59:29Speaker 3: moment because he obviously does have a lot of trauma
- 59:34Speaker 3: in his life. You know, like, I don't think that's unfair,
- 59:36Speaker 3: but it doesn't necessarily mean it's one path over another.
- 59:43Speaker 3: And then the call back to it, I thought was
- 59:44Speaker 3: great because she was being really you know, she was
- 59:47Speaker 3: being strong armed into, you know, giving him up and
- 59:52Speaker 3: all that. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so yeah, those two got me.
- 59:58Speaker 3: It was three total, I guess then, yeah, should we
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: do a little movie trivia?
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Nice. Before the movie was released, Ben Affleck praise Jeremy
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Renner's performance, and he jokingly stated that if there was
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: a bad shot or performance from someone else in the scene,
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: editing could easily just cut to Renner looking at a
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: napkin to make the scene work. Was really great and
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: it makes me wonder if he did he do the
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: soda thing on his own. I don't know, I need
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: to know about this stupid soda thing. Jeremy Renner, in
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: preparation for this role, surrounded himself with actual convicted bank
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: robbers in Charlestown for research, and it helped him nail
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: the accent according to him, which seems like he really did.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: I thought he was great with you guys.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: Washed off from all those Cambridge years now, I.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Guess, which is pretty wild because he is not this guy,
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: as it turns out, just a fine actor. Like we said,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: the original cut was four hours long, which is pretty crazy,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: but yeah, he cut it down. But there is uh
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: so there's the theatrical cut, there's the extended cut, and
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: then there's also an alternate ending that you can find
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: out there.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: So I would love to know did you find or
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: was yours the alternate anyone?
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Do you know how mine was not the alternate ending?
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: I looked it up. The only one I could find
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: of the alternate ending was in Spanish, so I only
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: kind of know what happened, but it is very different.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: And I read that the alternate ending is the book ending.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Okay, the extended cut, well they're different.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know has the same Yeah, the extended
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: extended right, so but yeah, they're out there. If people
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: like that stuff, which I think is kind of fun.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: It's it's kind of amazing to me just because it
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: shows how many choices have to go into making a movie, right,
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: you know, like Yeah, kind of insane, to be honest.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: And I mean, without spoiling for the book, he doesn't
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: get away. You don't know right if he's like it's
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: sort of implied he's killed, but you're not sure in
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: the film very clearly writing off of the sunset, which
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: is just such a huge payoff on this side or
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: the other, and the tangerine Florida that he mentioned earlier,
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: and so I imagine like filmgoers or movie goers would
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: love that way more than the kind of it's almost
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: like soprano like ding of the book where you're not
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: quite sure if he dies is a quartered by the
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: FBI basically, and he could be captured or cop but
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: he's definitely not getting away.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be a whole different thing. That's crazy.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: Chris Cooper's scene was shot at MCI Cedar Junction, which
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: is a maximum security prison in Massachusetts, and it was
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: the first time anything was ever filmed there. So I
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: just thought that was kind of intriguing that they actually
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: went to a max facility. The paperwork in that must
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: be insane. Owen Burke, who played Desmond Elden, was a
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: twenty year old Charlestown native who previously had been caught
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: up in gangs as a youth, and it was his
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: first acting role ever. When apparently, when he first got
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: the phone call from Ben Affleck, he was just convinced
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: it was a prank call. So I just thought that
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: was pretty wild to have to play you know, these
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: people who he probably knows versions of various times. It
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: was fun that you mentioned Heat earlier, Luke, because Ben
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: Affleck cited the Departed Heat, Mystic River, and the Friends
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: of Eddie Coyle as influences on this film, so he
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: would agree, I think, which is pretty cool. He thought
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: they were all R rated for films in the same
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: vein that were sort of the gold standard for what
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: he was going for, so he picked some good ones auss. Yeah, yeah, right,
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: for sure. The production encountered a ton of problems with
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: practical effects apparently, and I guess because of the budget,
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: which we talked about now, most of the scenes that
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: had the bullet holes and things had to be added
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: digitally in post production, which is pretty wild. So I
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: thought that was interesting. I didn't notice it, so yeah
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: they did. Okay, Let's see, in the movie, the gang
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: uses a Dodge Minivan during the heist, but in the
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: real No Name gang that the movie is based upon.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: They always use Chevrolet Aluminus because they were apparently the
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: fastest minivans you could get. So all right, Robbie know
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: what to get for your next whip?
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I didn't realize this, but like, you know
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: why I always talk about stolen cars. It's like you
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: steal a car so you can go do the other
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: big crime, right, I didn't realize that fact. It's always
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: out of community meeting recently and they were talking about
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: the number of how the number of car theft and
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: Nashville was like signific getting lower than Memphis, and like
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: how that's a good leading indicator because usually after like
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: you know, cars are stolen, people then go in the
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: stolen car and do something way worse. So like it's
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: a leading indicator for more violent types of crime. So sure,
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: fun community civic fact on this podcast.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: Does that make sense? That's being a smart criminal good
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: for them?
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Makes sense?
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: We have three past and President Marvel alumni that are
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: part of this. Of course, Ben Affleck was Daredevil in
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: the great film that everyone loves, and yeah, revered Jeremy
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: Render of course, but it's Hawkeye. And then Rebecca Hall
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: was Maya Hanson and Iron Man three, which I had
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: kind of forgot.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: So that was not my favorite. Yeah, that was not
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: in Iron Man three.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it was no one favorite. I don't think really.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I liked to Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke.
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Yeah, musk I.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Want my Yeah, Elon wasn't too. The scene where the
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: cop turns away, you know, when they see him, right
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: and then he just turns away and lets him go
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: about their business. That was based on real life, I guess,
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: an actual event, and Ben Affleck found out about it
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: when he was interviewing a bank robber in prison, just
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: a sort of like background for the movie, and then
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: he added it into the movie. So I thought that
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: was cool, so great because it's so perfect right, And
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: I don't blame the cop one bit. I would have
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: done the same at all. I'm just kidding about my business.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: I'm no hero.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Sounds good sandwich? Yeah, no doubt is a box autas
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: box aquantas Oh.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: In the nineteen twenties, well known Chicago mobster Dean O'Banion
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: ran a flower shop as a front for his bootlegging activities,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: and like Fergie, the Ferggie character in the film, he
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: was eventually gunned down and killed in his flower shop.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: The actual event was also recreated in the series Boardwalk Empire,
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: so they sort of stole as an homage to real
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: life with that Fergie character, which I thought was so
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: fun because we all agree he was so great.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: So it was great.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that was all the trivia I had raped. Did
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: you have anything fun?
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: One? Just The film's premiere was held at Fenway Park
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: and the cast walked a red carpet along the first baseline,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: which I love. That's just fun. And then Ben Affleck
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: was struggling to find the right actor for the role
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: of James Coughlin. His younger brother Casey suggested Jeremy Runner,
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: who he'd worked with on the Assassination of Jesse James
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: by the Coward Robert Ford. Nice, very cool, and apparently
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: he wanted Mark Wahlberg for Coughlin, but he was shooting
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: the fighter, huh, so yeah, he could have done it.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: I think Wahlberg could have just like, you know, cornered
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: the market on all things Boston between that and departed
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: like if he gets forget about it. You know, there
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: is only one face of Boston Mount Rushmore Films.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: It's Mark Wohlberg. Yeah, Yeah, that was all I had though.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Nice Luke, did you have any trivia that we didn't
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: get to. You're not required to, but if you had an.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: I didn't have any trivia.
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: I was going to talk a little bit about the
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: book and the different ending for things and just some
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: of the character differences between those things. I went back
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: and reread like a couple of chapters, like the whole
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: thing this past weekend, just to kind of remind myself
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: of how, you know, how some things were different. But
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: in the in the book it was kind of you know,
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: like I mentioned, it's definitely more of a psychological profile
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: into Doug McCrae. Different ending, but the I think the
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: difference in characters two of them.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Frawley was like a little bit more different.
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: He was definitely out to win. He was definitely a
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: little bit more and you know, he got a bit
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: of that with the christ the scene and threatening sky
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: and everything at the ball are, but he does that
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: a lot.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: In the book.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: He's like, definitely, you know, there's a dark and white
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: darken light to that guy a little bit more in
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: the book.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: And then yeah, the then Claire's character too, she's like
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: not as like I said, malleable and she actually that
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: kind of butters up a little bit almost like applied
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: romantically to Frawley in the book as well too, So
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: she's I liked her character way more in the book,
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: even though Rebecca Hall did a good job with her.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: So cool now nice. Will there be a sequel Judgment Day?

- 1:10:37Speaker 2: If somebody gets that wrong, the other person can come
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: in and steal. But all these films have something in common.
