- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro football, the insider
- 0:07Speaker 2: I've covered while Jeff Legwall he's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 3: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you VIY the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: i BBW Local sixty eight start with the chomp and
- 0:19Speaker 2: with the career Bate's Leggye on Altitude Sports Radio five.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah, our number two. We started right off with Jeff Legwald, Nate,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Nandy Olive, the Hofbrow here in Westminster ninety second and
- 0:38Speaker 1: Wadsworth on a Mexican Monday. On a Mexican Monday night
- 0:42Speaker 1: football doubleheader, we have got the Ravens starting things off
- 0:47Speaker 1: against Tampa Chargers and Arizona two games tonight on Monday
- 0:53Speaker 1: Night football. Right now, we chat with our pal Jeff
- 0:56Speaker 1: Legwald of ESPN and Jeff, we start with Sean Payton
- 1:02Speaker 1: today before we get into the week that was in
- 1:04Speaker 1: the NFL. We start with Sean Payton. He was asked
- 1:07Speaker 1: today about bow Nix's footwork and how much can be
- 1:13Speaker 1: done to help the issues of Bow's footwork during the season.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Let's play that audio right now. Roll at spring.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you got to be careful you're not
- 1:24Speaker 4: over coaching it. There are some things he does very
- 1:27Speaker 4: well out of the pocket or climbing up in the pocket,
- 1:31Speaker 4: and so I think we start with the focus on
- 1:35Speaker 4: timing of the route, the depth of the route, you know,
- 1:38Speaker 4: in the gun or under center, you know there's a three,
- 1:40Speaker 4: five or seven, And we work on the rhythm of
- 1:44Speaker 4: the play so that his feet marry up to the
- 1:47Speaker 4: depth of the route. And then you know, the times
- 1:51Speaker 4: where he's climbing the pocket or moving in the pocket.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You know, we're pretty smart about how much we say
- 1:58Speaker 4: or or how much we try to fix.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Jeff, what did you make of that answer?
- 2:03Speaker 3: Right there?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Is it as simple as it's about timing, rhythm and
- 2:08Speaker 1: if those things married together naturally, the young quarterback will
- 2:13Speaker 1: have a more solid base underneath himself to throw the ball.
- 2:17Speaker 5: I mean, that's the case with any play you know,
- 2:21Speaker 5: start to finish. But you know, I don't know, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 5: it's sort of the answer I would expect him to
- 2:28Speaker 5: give in the season, because again, you there's just not
- 2:32Speaker 5: time to you know, tear things down fund mechanically, down
- 2:38Speaker 5: to the roots and then you know, get after it.
- 2:42Speaker 5: You just kind of have to live with it the
- 2:43Speaker 5: best you can right now and sort of take on
- 2:47Speaker 5: the big stuff. To me, the most intriguing part was
- 2:51Speaker 5: when he said, you don't want to overcoach it. And
- 2:54Speaker 5: I mean I've seen him coach details on every player,
- 2:59Speaker 5: you know, down to the to the finest details of all,
- 3:04Speaker 5: so that that that surprised me a little bit. But
- 3:07Speaker 5: you know, it sounded a little flip to me. But that's,
- 3:09Speaker 5: you know again, it's it's the answer he almost has
- 3:13Speaker 5: to give in the season is Look, he's the kids
- 3:16Speaker 5: doing the best he can, and you know we're we
- 3:19Speaker 5: got to do better around him.
- 3:21Speaker 3: And and I think that's.
- 3:23Speaker 5: You know again, that's a good answer for him right now,
- 3:26Speaker 5: but it's it's not the whole answer.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And he knows.
- 3:31Speaker 5: That if you peel away some of the throws Thursday night,
- 3:36Speaker 5: some of those are footwork issues where the route is
- 3:39Speaker 5: SYNCD up very nicely and the play is run very
- 3:42Speaker 5: nicely and the receiver is very open.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Is there anything you can do in smaller doses to
- 3:51Speaker 6: try to fix that, Jeff.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I think that the numbers show that
- 3:58Speaker 5: when he's in play actions, he's productive and accurate, which
- 4:01Speaker 5: is I asked him later today about play action and
- 4:04Speaker 5: he he disputes any and all statistics regarding that. But
- 4:10Speaker 5: you know, they've been in the bottom third most of
- 4:13Speaker 5: the season in the use of play action, and you know,
- 4:17Speaker 5: bo Nicks was very productive Thursday night in particular in
- 4:22Speaker 5: play action, and it was the most play action they
- 4:24Speaker 5: had used since week one. So I think the proof
- 4:30Speaker 5: is there that I think his footwork syncs up a
- 4:33Speaker 5: little better when he has to to do those things.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think he gets.
- 4:40Speaker 5: A little more lax with the footwork when he's in
- 4:43Speaker 5: he drifts and he's got time in the pocket, and
- 4:46Speaker 5: you know, he sort of drifts out of the pocket
- 4:49Speaker 5: or just leaves the pocket sometimes when he doesn't have to.
- 4:52Speaker 5: But again, you know, he's a rookie quarterback. This is
- 4:57Speaker 5: what is going to happen to rookie quarterbacks, especially guys
- 5:01Speaker 5: who play in a college offense like he had an
- 5:05Speaker 5: Oregon where the you know, the footwork and a lot
- 5:09Speaker 5: of the things being asked are not in a you know,
- 5:12Speaker 5: quote unquote NFL things.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 5:17Speaker 1: Electrical Workers ib W Local sixty eight. You start with
- 5:21Speaker 1: a job, you end with the career. Jeff Legwald with
- 5:23Speaker 1: us here on a Monday LEGI, you wrote about the
- 5:26Speaker 1: run game. They went for two twenty five on Thursday
- 5:28Speaker 1: night against the Saints, most since what twenty thirteen when
- 5:31Speaker 1: they went for two to eighty. I believe you wrote
- 5:33Speaker 1: in that piece right there one of my big questions
- 5:36Speaker 1: about the commitment to the run game. And you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Peyton when he talked about it, said, you know, it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: really opponent specific, it's really game plan specific. But one
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the things that I'm curious about, and you alluded
- 5:47Speaker 1: to this in the piece, is bo Nicks is going
- 5:50Speaker 1: to be more comfortable operating out of the shotgun, which
- 5:53Speaker 1: does change how you approach the run game. Doesn't eliminate
- 5:56Speaker 1: the run game, but it has it does change how
- 5:58Speaker 1: you approach the run game a little bit. The shotgun
- 6:02Speaker 1: versus under center part of the sort of bon Knicks dichotomy.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Right now, what impact is that having currently on the
- 6:11Speaker 1: Broncos run game.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Well, Mat, I think you know now there are teams
- 6:16Speaker 5: that run well out of the shotgun. I don't want
- 6:18Speaker 5: to you know, I don't want to take that off
- 6:21Speaker 5: the table, and I'm not endorsing, you know, a return.
- 6:24Speaker 3: To nineteen eighty two and everybody runs.
- 6:26Speaker 5: You know, fifty percent of the time, and you know
- 6:29Speaker 5: all this stuff. Not I'm just saying that defensive coaches
- 6:34Speaker 5: will tell you in the shotgun, you're you're sort of
- 6:38Speaker 5: picking a direction, uh, simply by how you are aligned,
- 6:42Speaker 5: unless you're in the pistol. But if the back isn't
- 6:46Speaker 5: directly behind the quarterback in some fashion, that you are
- 6:50Speaker 5: tipping your hand a little bit, unless you're willing to
- 6:55Speaker 5: run a guy all the way across, which is a
- 6:58Speaker 5: longer developing play, which is also easier to defend in
- 7:02Speaker 5: some ways. So and I you know, these are discussions
- 7:05Speaker 5: I had with Mike Shanahan and Gary Kubiak in particular,
- 7:09Speaker 5: who who always said they liked the shotgun, but it
- 7:13Speaker 5: limits you in terms of you know, deception or surprise
- 7:20Speaker 5: or you know, percentages in the run game. And that
- 7:25Speaker 5: that was when they weighed using the shotgun. That was
- 7:28Speaker 5: a big part of why they chose to be under
- 7:31Speaker 5: center a lot because of what it does for you. Uh,
- 7:35Speaker 5: you don't you're not sort of declaring, hey, we're running
- 7:38Speaker 5: to the right right now. You know, you've you've got
- 7:42Speaker 5: a few more things open. But again, if you do
- 7:45Speaker 5: it well, it can be done out of the shotgun.
- 7:48Speaker 5: But uh, you got to have a lot of things working,
- 7:52Speaker 5: and some of that is being able to block, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 5: five on five out of open open formations.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I can remember C. J. Anderson telling me he
- 8:02Speaker 6: always liked the quarterback under center. I can go either
- 8:05Speaker 6: side with the ball, so they're not getting a cheat
- 8:08Speaker 6: read on me, and I can get my running start
- 8:10Speaker 6: as I get the hand off there. So you know what,
- 8:13Speaker 6: it's not just OC and play callers. Sometimes it's even
- 8:16Speaker 6: the backs and players themselves. All Right, Jeff, this team,
- 8:21Speaker 6: how good can it be in the landscape in the NFL.
- 8:24Speaker 6: You gotta watch a whole NFL Sunday yesterday, which I
- 8:26Speaker 6: know you were working, but you're always living the football life,
- 8:29Speaker 6: you know. I was asking it a little bit earlier.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Had to talk with our buddy Mike Sandford. I'm not
- 8:33Speaker 6: sure how many dominant teams are really getting this year.
- 8:36Speaker 6: I think some of the teams we thought were really
- 8:37Speaker 6: good are probably not. That it's still not even Halloween,
- 8:40Speaker 6: so some teams kind of correct course in November and on.
- 8:43Speaker 6: But how many good teams do you think they are?
- 8:45Speaker 6: And what does that mean, for what the Broncos can
- 8:47Speaker 6: maybe top out at is nine or ten wins. Unrealistic
- 8:51Speaker 6: to think about for this team with the injuries at
- 8:53Speaker 6: quarterback and other places on their schedule. This up for
- 8:57Speaker 6: what they got left this year.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, anything's open to them right now.
- 9:04Speaker 5: I mean, this is the best they've been, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 5: after seven games, you know, since twenty sixteen. Now our room,
- 9:13Speaker 5: you know, all sort of remind people they were, they
- 9:16Speaker 5: were above five hundred after the five game win streak.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Last year.
- 9:20Speaker 5: They were in this position you know, quote unquote much
- 9:26Speaker 5: deeper into the year. So you know, I'm not even
- 9:30Speaker 5: going to say they can you know, do better than
- 9:33Speaker 5: that right now, but the potentials there.
- 9:36Speaker 3: I mean, Carolina is the worst team in football.
- 9:39Speaker 5: You know, they're giving up thirty four points a game,
- 9:41Speaker 5: which in the NFL is you know, unbelievable, but their
- 9:46Speaker 5: last in nearly every defensive category. So you would think
- 9:50Speaker 5: five and three is looking pretty good if they simply
- 9:53Speaker 5: handle their business Sunday. But then I think that the
- 9:57Speaker 5: heart of the matter comes up, you know, at Baltimore
- 10:01Speaker 5: at Kansas City. You know, see how they do going
- 10:05Speaker 5: through that section, and if they get through that section,
- 10:08Speaker 5: around five hundred, you're in the wildcard race, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 5: coming down the stretch. But the dominant team thing, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 5: I would quibble that. I think the AFC has two
- 10:21Speaker 5: heavyweights and and the Broncos get them on back to
- 10:24Speaker 5: back weeks.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they really do. I mean, and I made this point.
- 10:29Speaker 1: This was on the Friday edition of the show. I said,
- 10:31Speaker 1: right now, the Broncos are at best. They're they're they're
- 10:34Speaker 1: the eighth best team in the AFC as we sit
- 10:37Speaker 1: here today. And that's a and that's a best case scenario.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's you know, there's other four and three teams, the
- 10:42Speaker 1: Indianapolis Colts of the world, you know, would like a
- 10:44Speaker 1: spot in that conversation right now. But I'm gonna say Buffalo,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna say Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincinnati. I'll put all
- 10:52Speaker 1: of them above Denver. I'll put Houston, Kansas City, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Chargers. That's seven teams right there in the AFC.
- 10:59Speaker 1: That looks like that could very well be a playoff field.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Cincinnati's finding their footing. The schedule did them a huge favor.
- 11:05Speaker 1: We talked about the Chargers before, how good are they really?
- 11:08Speaker 1: They're about to play for of those cupcakes right in
- 11:11Speaker 1: a row. Are are are the Chargers right now? So
- 11:15Speaker 1: they're in pretty good shape. But that's just it. Like
- 11:18Speaker 1: if you are the eighth best team in the AFC,
- 11:21Speaker 1: guess what, somebody else can have some bad luck. Somebody
- 11:23Speaker 1: else can have a couple of injuries. You handle your business,
- 11:26Speaker 1: You play the kind of defense you've been playing all
- 11:28Speaker 1: year long. You take care of the ball and read
- 11:31Speaker 1: Jeff Lake well today at ESPN. You commit to a
- 11:33Speaker 1: run game, and you've got yourself a playoff team right there.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Yeah again again. You know, look, you're the heavyweights are
- 11:42Speaker 5: in the AFC. You know, I like Detroit and the NFC,
- 11:46Speaker 5: of course, but yeah, in Minnesota. Minnesota plays the kind
- 11:50Speaker 5: of defense you don't want to see on a postseason
- 11:53Speaker 5: weekend with one week to prepare. But the real heavyweights,
- 11:59Speaker 5: especially home game heavyweights, like playoff games in their stadium.
- 12:06Speaker 5: You know, Pittsburgh's a heavyweight after what I saw last night,
- 12:09Speaker 5: Buffalo's a heavyweight. Baltimore's a heavyweight. And of course the Chiefs.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Everyone can tell me how the Chiefs aren't quite right,
- 12:17Speaker 5: but I don't know. All I know is they just
- 12:20Speaker 5: sort of win all the games and go home.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Six and zero.
- 12:24Speaker 1: They Brady was kind of making this point on the
- 12:27Speaker 1: on the telecast of like anytime if they need two yards,
- 12:31Speaker 1: they get three. You know, if they need five yards,
- 12:33Speaker 1: they get six. There's nothing spectacular about what they're doing.
- 12:36Speaker 1: They just they they do the thing that they have
- 12:39Speaker 1: to do to finish with more points than you did
- 12:41Speaker 1: every week.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Well, and that sh look familiar to Brady because they're
- 12:45Speaker 5: the Chiefs are currently the closest thing we have to
- 12:49Speaker 5: those Patriots. They they don't just say this is our
- 12:54Speaker 5: way of doing things. And I think this is why
- 12:57Speaker 5: I think it's it's dangerous for the BRONC. Is there
- 13:00Speaker 5: anybody else to do the whole this is what we
- 13:03Speaker 5: do thing? You know, the Patriots, it's unprecedented what they
- 13:08Speaker 5: did over two decades in a salary cap era. But
- 13:12Speaker 5: they were a lot of things over those two decades.
- 13:14Speaker 5: They were no huddle, they were too tight end. They
- 13:17Speaker 5: were run the ball, they were chucking around every play.
- 13:21Speaker 5: They were one word play calls, they were use all
- 13:24Speaker 5: the play clock.
- 13:25Speaker 3: They did everything. That's what the Chiefs do. Now. They
- 13:29Speaker 3: lose receivers, they do other things.
- 13:31Speaker 5: They lose backs, they do other things, you know, they
- 13:35Speaker 5: play defense, they hang around, and they've got the alpha
- 13:38Speaker 5: like like the Patriots did. So it doesn't shock me
- 13:42Speaker 5: that he you know, he said what he said because it.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Is the closest thing to them currently.
- 13:49Speaker 5: But you know, I think the AFC again is just
- 13:52Speaker 5: a lot tougher, and if the Broncos can sneak in
- 13:55Speaker 5: on the back end of that, they're gonna have to
- 13:57Speaker 5: do it and stay healthy on defense.
- 14:00Speaker 3: So I think that's the one thing that.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Could topple them because they are they are getting by
- 14:04Speaker 5: right now on one of the league's least impactful offenses,
- 14:10Speaker 5: even after Thursday night, and you can only do that
- 14:13Speaker 5: if you're going to play elite defense all the time.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It's working so far. Jeff Legwall brought to you by
- 14:19Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Start with a job and with a career. Read Jeff's
- 14:26Speaker 1: latest at ESPN dot com. It is all about the
- 14:28Speaker 1: Broncos run game and you will be a smarter fan
- 14:31Speaker 1: as a result. Leggy, good stuff, buddy, Thanks Palace, We'll
- 14:35Speaker 1: see it.
