- 0:01Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads, the Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company, and Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:15In this episode, we're going to listen to Elon Musk talking at
- 0:19the Tesla cyber truck delivery event.
- 0:22Enjoy. Welcome to the cyber truck
- 0:26delivery event SO. I'm.
- 0:30Going to do it from the back of the truck here.
- 0:41So, so once, once in a while, once in once in a once in a long
- 0:45while, a product comes along that is rare, that is once in
- 0:53once every 5 to 10 years, something really special, a
- 1:00really unusual product comes along and we'll remember those
- 1:06special moments when indeed special moments.
- 1:21So, but, but these things are rare.
- 1:25It's very rare that a product comes along that is seemingly
- 1:31impossible that that people said was impossible, that experts
- 1:36said was impossible. And this is one of those times
- 1:41We have a we have a car here that experts said was
- 1:44impossible, that experts said would never be made.
- 1:48That it, it, it, it really is the most, I think it's I think
- 1:56it's our best product. I think it's the most unique
- 1:59thing on the road. And finally, the future will
- 2:02look like the future. So So what what we're aiming for
- 2:15here is something that has that's more truck than truck.
- 2:22OK, thanks bro. That's literally my brother
- 2:28there. So and So what we have here is,
- 2:37is something that is a better truck than a truck while also
- 2:40being a better sports car than a sports car in the same package.
- 2:45So first of all, let's you know, let's talk about how you know,
- 2:50trucks are tough. That's one of the defining
- 2:53characteristics of a truck. So how tough is this truck?
- 2:58Let's find out. So we actually had to come up
- 3:04with a special ultra strong Tesla designed steel alloy.
- 3:10So this alloy did this this this mantle did not exist before.
- 3:14We needed something that you could actually manufacture, but
- 3:18that would be have basically no corrosion, that didn't need
- 3:24paint, but you can still make it in volume.
- 3:28And part of the reason that it has this angular shape is you
- 3:31can't actually stamp these body panels.
- 3:34The body panels would break the stamping machine.
- 3:38So oh, and I should say also the because of the steel
- 3:44exoskeleton, it actually has more torsional rigidity than a
- 3:47sports car. It has more torsional stiffness
- 3:49than a McLaren P1. So it's that's very that's a big
- 3:55deal. Now, you may remember an
- 4:00incident four years ago didn't quite go as planned.
- 4:08And Franz, maybe we should try it again.
- 4:37Yeah, Yeah, great. I mean, I think you could, we
- 4:45could probably have a pro pitcher or love it if you still
- 4:48work. So anyway, it's the, the, the,
- 4:51the glass is tough, basically that's what we're saying.
- 4:55So you don't have to worry about like rocks hitting the glass and
- 4:59cracking the glass. This this glass is, is basically
- 5:02rock proof. It's also makes the car very
- 5:05quiet. So it's the, the, the thing that
- 5:08you'll appreciate when you drive the car is that is how smooth
- 5:11and quiet it is. It does, it feels, it doesn't
- 5:15feel like, like a normal truck. It's, it's smooth as silk and,
- 5:19and, and silent when you, when you drive it.
- 5:24And yeah, so in tough in terms of toughness and then things
- 5:28like roll over because the center of gravity is so low, it
- 5:33doesn't roll over. And if you're having an argument
- 5:38with another car, you will win. In in movies you sometimes see
- 5:53the hero heroine hiding behind the car door while being shot
- 5:59with bullets. That doesn't actually work
- 6:01unless you're driving a cyber truck.
- 6:05So if Al Capone showed up with a Tommy gun and emptied the entire
- 6:12magazine into the car door, you would still be alive.
- 6:16So you know, And so people say like, well, you know, why did
- 6:21you make it bulletproof? I'm like, why not?
- 6:26Do you want to How tough is your truck?
- 6:28Because the the other trucks, the bullets go through both
- 6:30sides. So you shoot a bullet goes
- 6:33through both sides of the car. And you know, you just never
- 6:36know. I mean, sometimes you get these
- 6:38like late civilization vibes, you know, you never know when
- 6:45the apocalypse could come come along at any moment.
- 6:48And at here at Tesla, we have the finest in apocalypse
- 6:52technology. I was on the Joe Rogan show and
- 6:59Joe bet me a dollar that his armor piercing steelhead arrow
- 7:03would go through the car it hit. Now he owes me a dollar.
- 7:16Now, what about utility? So strength is great, but is
- 7:21this is this, you know, perhaps just a show truck, just a, you
- 7:27know, a showpiece or the can't do actual work.
- 7:30How does it work as a real everyday truck?
- 7:33Well, here we have the future towing the future.
- 7:41So basically if if you can fit any cargo in, in the in the
- 7:48trunk or in the bed, you you can basically move it around.
- 7:51So it's got over a ton of payload capability, but you
- 7:56could really put more than that in it.
- 7:58You can tow over 11,000 lbs and it's got a super tough composite
- 8:03bed, no liner needed. The bed is 6 foot long, 4 foot
- 8:06wide, and you can fit 4 by 8 feet 4/4 by 8 pieces of plywood
- 8:11in with the with the with the back down.
- 8:17So for those who are really into the truck world, there's there's
- 8:22something in the truck world called a a truck pull.
- 8:26This is really the the the key test of how much power does your
- 8:31truck actually have? So you have to pull this 40,000
- 8:35LB sled and I, when we went to the track, we said, well, well,
- 8:42what's the best that that you've seen?
- 8:45I said, well, it's be the 4th F-350 diesel was like, well,
- 8:49let's let's put our truck up against that.
- 8:51The the guy who runs the the truck pool said that there's no
- 8:55way. There's no way.
- 8:56It's like, well, let's try it, let's see what happens.
- 8:59It's, you know, bolt bullet tough, you know, like that
- 9:03phrase TM and you can out pull an F-350 diesel has a massive
- 9:13towing capacity, massive bed. It's basically an incredibly
- 9:17useful truck. It's not just some grandstanding
- 9:20showpiece like me, it's it's actually it's actually very
- 9:26useful. Now what about performance?
- 9:37So this I should say it's it has an adaptive S suspension.
- 9:39So no matter what the load is, it will you can always have the
- 9:43IT can set the the right height at any at low height, anything.
- 9:47It will automatically adjust the damping according to how much
- 9:51load is carrying and the road conditions has a 17 inch ground
- 9:55clearance that that's a true 17 inches that it will typically
- 9:59with a truck you'll you'll get the differential hanging down
- 10:02low, the rear differential and that's what you'll high side on
- 10:06a rock. But this is this has a
- 10:08completely flat bed. So you could you could drive
- 10:12over basically anything. We actually took the cyber truck
- 10:16on a Baja rally drive. So this is insane off road
- 10:22capability. It has locking differentials,
- 10:27rear torque vectoring, and the crazy thing is they'll do this
- 10:31all in comfort. It has steer by wire which is if
- 10:38it's one of the things where most people don't know what that
- 10:40means, but it's what is how modern jets are designed.
- 10:45The steer by wire which gives you a variable gain.
- 10:47So if you turn the wheel a small in the steering, the steering
- 10:50yoke a small amount in the parking lot it will turn the
- 10:53wheels a lot. But if you if you turn on Hwy.
- 10:56it turns the wheels a small amount.
- 10:57So it dynamically adjusts how much the wheels turn according
- 11:02to what your speed is. And this actually makes it very
- 11:07easy to drive it actually. And it has a turning circle less
- 11:11than a Model S, So this thing can pack practically turn it,
- 11:15you know, rotate on a, you know, dime basically.
- 11:20It has incredible low speed maneuverability.
- 11:26And then there's a lot of advanced details under the skin.
- 11:31It's the first time that a car is moving to a 48 Volt low
- 11:34voltage architecture from 12 volts, which has been around for
- 11:37100 years. We have Ethernet comms,
- 11:43distributed controllers, allows for 70% less wire in the car.
- 11:48And it's, it's really the, the internals are as advanced as the
- 11:53externals. It's it's a whole new step
- 11:55change in the technology. So let's take it to the
- 12:02racetrack and see how how does the cyber truck perform against
- 12:07a Porsche 9/11 And I should I should say this is this is an
- 12:12actual Porsche. It's we literally just got it
- 12:14from the dealer 2023 Porsche 9/11 so the.
- 12:34It can. It can tow a Porsche 9/11 across
- 12:371/4 mile faster than the Porsche 9/11.
- 12:39Can grow by itself, I should say tougher than bullets.
- 12:51Tow pretty much anything faster than a 9/11 while towing a 911.
- 12:58So and delivery spring begin now.
