- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody. It's Jeff. I wanted to let
- 0:02Speaker 1: you know. This podcast episode was recorded on Monday, September ninth,
- 0:06Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. By the time you hear this, some
- 0:08Speaker 1: things may have changed here or there, but we hope
- 0:10Speaker 1: you enjoyed the show. Welcome to Table Talk here at
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly
- 0:37Speaker 1: Philly sports podcast show in the world, eleven years strong,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and folks, Week one of the twenty twenty four twenty
- 0:44Speaker 1: twenty five NFL season is just about in the books. Boy,
- 0:48Speaker 1: what a opening week of this league. We saw some
- 0:52Speaker 1: pretty good football and we also saw some garbage football too,
- 0:57Speaker 1: which we are certainly going to be getting into on
- 0:58Speaker 1: this Table Talk interview and discussion this week. But I'm
- 1:02Speaker 1: happy football is back, whether it's college football, which we're
- 1:05Speaker 1: gonna be getting into on our regular show this week.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yes teaser, and I'm very excited that the NFL is here.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I know you are too if you're listening to this.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We're gonna get into some analysis right now about what
- 1:17Speaker 1: we saw here in Week one with specific teams, specific quarterbacks.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So let's get to the discussion now. Joining us this
- 1:25Speaker 1: week to get into Week one of the NFL. He
- 1:28Speaker 1: is from SB Nation, one of our favorites here at
- 1:31Speaker 1: the PST podcast show. We've got mister Mark Schofield, Mark Buddy,
- 1:34Speaker 1: how you doing, I'm doing.
- 1:36Speaker 2: While Jeff, it is great to be back with you.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Last time we chopped it up was like pre draft,
- 1:40Speaker 2: so it's awesome now that we get to talk about
- 1:42Speaker 2: so the players that we're drafted, you know how their
- 1:45Speaker 2: debuts went in week long and get active the games
- 1:47Speaker 2: to talk about, which is super fun. And it's always great,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, as we just did a few minutes ago.
- 1:51Speaker 2: It's just chopping it up. You know, you and I
- 1:53Speaker 2: have known each other for years now, got some time
- 1:55Speaker 2: together away from the pods as well. It's always great
- 1:58Speaker 2: to see you. Always great to get a chance you can,
- 2:00Speaker 2: but it's always great to talk football with you.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But I always appreciate you my friend always. Dude. Look,
- 2:04Speaker 1: aside from all the NFL talk and college football talk
- 2:07Speaker 1: that we've dove into over the years, you've been doing
- 2:10Speaker 1: so much coverage over at SP Nation with regard to
- 2:13Speaker 1: F one, and you know we don't get into F
- 2:16Speaker 1: one here on this podcast platform. However, I'd love you
- 2:19Speaker 1: to throw out some stuff for folks who are into
- 2:21Speaker 1: F one if they want to either follow you of
- 2:24Speaker 1: course at Mark Scofield on Twitter slash x and you know,
- 2:27Speaker 1: just to talk about maybe what you're doing, what you're covering.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Get that out there for folks. Yeah, the F.
- 2:32Speaker 2: One stuff is crazy. I mean I've always loved the sport,
- 2:35Speaker 2: but now I get to cover it. And you know
- 2:37Speaker 2: what's great about anybody that's like into F one or
- 2:40Speaker 2: has been following F one knows how the sport's trying
- 2:42Speaker 2: to get that American market going. You've got three races
- 2:45Speaker 2: here in the States. The teams are excited about anybody
- 2:48Speaker 2: that covers Formula one here in the States, which means
- 2:50Speaker 2: I've been able to interview jobbers, you know, Like I said,
- 2:53Speaker 2: we talked in February in Miami, Mark. In May, I
- 2:56Speaker 2: was down in Miami for the Miami Grand Prix, and yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I knew it. I was sitting across from Lowis Hamilton,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, sitting in Alexander Albon.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Fred Vesser, the Ferrari team principal, gave his like post
- 3:09Speaker 2: race press conference in Ferrari's hospitality and then like winked
- 3:12Speaker 2: at me on the way out. I mean, it's just
- 3:14Speaker 2: it's a crazy, crazy world. I mean, we're doing the
- 3:16Speaker 2: show on Monday, you know, September ninth. I've got an
- 3:20Speaker 2: exclusive with Vouchri bought us the salbur Driver that drops
- 3:23Speaker 2: tomorrow on Tuesday. We've got Azerbaijan, you know. This weekend
- 3:27Speaker 2: coming up, We've got a title fight between McLaren and
- 3:31Speaker 2: Red Bull, with Ferrari getting back into the mix. I'll
- 3:33Speaker 2: be down in Austin in October for the United States
- 3:35Speaker 2: Grand Prix. So it's crazy, I mean, And all the
- 3:39Speaker 2: years of covering the NFL. Yeah, I've been part of
- 3:41Speaker 2: like media scrums and things like that. Yeah, I sat
- 3:44Speaker 2: down one on one with a start an NFL quarterback
- 3:46Speaker 2: or a start an NFL head coach or an NFL coach.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Here I am, and like, this is basically year two
- 3:51Speaker 2: of doing the F one stuff full time, and I've
- 3:53Speaker 2: got driver exclusives, I've got teams calling me all the time.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Later this week, I'm gonna be talked with Tyler E.
- 3:59Speaker 2: F who's the president of the Miami Grand Prix, about
- 4:01Speaker 2: some of the things they'll be doing for the fourth
- 4:03Speaker 2: year of that race next season. And so it's a
- 4:06Speaker 2: ton of fun. Check it out at ESB Nation. You
- 4:07Speaker 2: know Mark Scofield on threads. Mark Scofield three nine one six,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I believe on threads. But yeah, it's a ton of fun,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and check it out if you're interested.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, F one's growing too, folks. F one is
- 4:20Speaker 1: definitely growing. Mark's got a lot of great coverage again
- 4:23Speaker 1: over at SB Nation, and follow him on those social platforms.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I don't think he'll be sorry at all. But Mark,
- 4:29Speaker 1: let's get into Week one of the NFL. Some of
- 4:32Speaker 1: the things we saw here good. Look, as folks know
- 4:36Speaker 1: have been listening for a while, you're a former college quarterback,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and we saw some rough quarterback play here in Week one,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and I found it fascinating. Conventional wisdom says it's the
- 4:49Speaker 1: first week of the season, guys are getting the rust
- 4:52Speaker 1: off basically, so like, let's not panic here, But I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 1: there was some bad quarterback play in Week one, and
- 4:58Speaker 1: I'm talking from veterans players like Jalen Hurts, Matt Stafford,
- 5:02Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins who've been around for quite some time now
- 5:05Speaker 1: looking either very rusty or not playing too much during
- 5:10Speaker 1: the preseason. I wonder if that's part of the equation too.
- 5:13Speaker 1: What do you attribute this real spotty quarterback play that
- 5:16Speaker 1: we saw in Week one? Two?
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think a couple of things, Jeff. I mean, look,
- 5:21Speaker 2: you know, passing touchdowns will record us ahead of Monday
- 5:24Speaker 2: night football. We only had thirty three passing touchdowns in
- 5:26Speaker 2: Week one. That's down from thirty seven and Week one
- 5:28Speaker 2: a year ago, fifty one in Week one two seasons ago. Wow,
- 5:32Speaker 2: we've seen that down to People like myself have been
- 5:36Speaker 2: wondering are we gonna finally get to the point? And
- 5:39Speaker 2: myself and Gpa Costa wrote this together ahead of last year.
- 5:42Speaker 2: The big boy football is coming back. And I know
- 5:44Speaker 2: you and I have talked about this a little bit.
- 5:46Speaker 2: With so much of an emphasis on the passing game,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and defense is responding to that with you know, two
- 5:52Speaker 2: high coverage shells and you know, quarter quarter half quarter
- 5:56Speaker 2: quarters across the board, with all this two deep safety stuff.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That world we've been living in to try to eliminate
- 6:02Speaker 2: the passing game and eliminate the big plays. Are we
- 6:04Speaker 2: finally going to see time to run the football? And
- 6:08Speaker 2: interesting enough, as we're sitting here on Monday morning after
- 6:11Speaker 2: Week one, I saw a stat posted on social media
- 6:13Speaker 2: from Jake Grossman looking at expected points added per pass
- 6:17Speaker 2: versus run, and for the first time in the past
- 6:21Speaker 2: decade of football, just through week one, though EPA per
- 6:25Speaker 2: run was higher than EPA per pass.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Wow, this week.
- 6:28Speaker 2: One just you know, a very very small sample size
- 6:31Speaker 2: when compared to full seasons over the past decade, but
- 6:35Speaker 2: at least in week one, EPA per pass was lower
- 6:37Speaker 2: than EPA per run. Now, whether that changes remains to
- 6:40Speaker 2: be seen, but we could be seeing. You know, we
- 6:43Speaker 2: always talk about football being that cyclical type of sport,
- 6:45Speaker 2: ins coming cycles. The cycle of the run game could
- 6:49Speaker 2: finally be coming back. Now. There's also an underlying, simple explanation.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Defenses are ready faster than offenses, right like offense takes
- 6:58Speaker 2: a lot longer to click play calls, get everybody in
- 7:02Speaker 2: the same page. Defense it's more you know, reactive, and
- 7:05Speaker 2: so sometimes early in seasons, particularly high school and like
- 7:08Speaker 2: you said, college, when I was playing, defenses seem to
- 7:11Speaker 2: be ahead of offenses early in the season. So that
- 7:14Speaker 2: could be an explanation for it. There's also sort of
- 7:16Speaker 2: the thought that a lot of these teams aren't playing
- 7:18Speaker 2: their starters in preseason game. You only get the three
- 7:21Speaker 2: preseason games they're using joint practices as more of an
- 7:24Speaker 2: evaluation tool rather than running their starters out where things
- 7:28Speaker 2: are a little less controlled. Not that football is a
- 7:31Speaker 2: controlled environment to begin with, but you can at least
- 7:34Speaker 2: control practices a bit more than games themselves. You know,
- 7:37Speaker 2: maybe there is something to that we're seeing offenses and
- 7:40Speaker 2: veteran quarterbacks having to knock the rust off a little
- 7:43Speaker 2: bit more as we get into week one, Week two,
- 7:44Speaker 2: Week three, And I know I just threw a lot
- 7:47Speaker 2: at you, but those are some of the things that
- 7:48Speaker 2: we could be seeing, and those are certainly, particularly when
- 7:51Speaker 2: it comes to run game versus past game, some of
- 7:53Speaker 2: the bigger storylines I'll be watching this year.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Absolutely, I think, you know, there's so many different pieces
- 7:59Speaker 1: to this puzzle. You just outlined what I think is interesting. Mark,
- 8:02Speaker 1: When we talked a couple times last season, it really
- 8:05Speaker 1: was the year of the defense last year. You even
- 8:08Speaker 1: said that a number of times, and I'm wondering if
- 8:10Speaker 1: that's just gonna be translating over here into the twenty
- 8:13Speaker 1: twenty four twenty twenty five season. Seems like, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: it may just be another year of the defense coming.
- 8:19Speaker 1: But again, week one got we gotta wait and see
- 8:23Speaker 1: here but I wanted to continue talking about the quarterback
- 8:26Speaker 1: play and the poor let's just say this, poor rookie
- 8:30Speaker 1: quarterback play that we saw in Week one. Bless their souls,
- 8:33Speaker 1: Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, even bo Nicks. Boy, they didn't
- 8:37Speaker 1: have the greatest starts in the world. And look, we
- 8:40Speaker 1: know it's gonna take time for them to learn the
- 8:41Speaker 1: game as rookies, and each week as they go along,
- 8:45Speaker 1: they're gonna learn more about the game. They're gonna learn
- 8:47Speaker 1: more about what they need from their offensive lines, what
- 8:49Speaker 1: they need from their receiver cords, what they're gonna need
- 8:51Speaker 1: to do in terms of their processing. What are your
- 8:54Speaker 1: thoughts on what we saw from the rookie quarterbacks here
- 8:57Speaker 1: right out of the gate. I don't think anybody should
- 8:59Speaker 1: be panicking necessarily, but what are your thoughts here? Mark?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I actually just published my rookie quarterback
- 9:04Speaker 2: grades and Jay and Daniels got the best with a
- 9:06Speaker 2: B minus. Yeah, and grade on a curve, but it
- 9:09Speaker 2: was B minus for him, you know, C plus for
- 9:11Speaker 2: Caleb Williams, C for Bo Nicks. Like you said, it's
- 9:15Speaker 2: not toime to pan It is nowhere near tom to
- 9:18Speaker 2: panic and if you're a fan of one of those teams,
- 9:20Speaker 2: you want to take week one here as a baseline,
- 9:24Speaker 2: and then that's spinning forward to December. Are you still
- 9:26Speaker 2: seeing the same mistakes from these quarterbacks in say week sixteen,
- 9:31Speaker 2: week seventeen as we saw in week one, Then it
- 9:33Speaker 2: might be time to panic. Yeah, but it's not tom
- 9:36Speaker 2: to panic now, you know, going through them specifically, I
- 9:39Speaker 2: think with Williams, all three of these quarterbacks weren't asked
- 9:42Speaker 2: to do a ton. I mean Caleb had the highest
- 9:45Speaker 2: you know, intended air yards of the three, with like
- 9:47Speaker 2: seven point eight. You know, he only had a three
- 9:49Speaker 2: point two yards per a town. Yeah, I mean anybody
- 9:52Speaker 2: in the league. Bonix was barely better with three point three.
- 9:55Speaker 2: It was a lot of stuff underneath. You know. Williams
- 9:58Speaker 2: only had I think seventh throws over ten yards in
- 10:00Speaker 2: the air. I think with Williams you saw flashes of
- 10:05Speaker 2: you know, the athleticism, the ability to create and things
- 10:07Speaker 2: like that, but you saw some subtle pocket movement at times,
- 10:10Speaker 2: the ability to just use his fee to create space
- 10:14Speaker 2: very late for the most part, with his eyes, with
- 10:16Speaker 2: his reason, with his throws needs and for all three
- 10:18Speaker 2: of these quarterbacks, things that happen faster, you know. But
- 10:21Speaker 2: he did have some nice reads. There was one play
- 10:23Speaker 2: where sort of look the underneath flying backer off came back,
- 10:26Speaker 2: hit a slammerroute to djitmore really nice throw. Daniels did
- 10:29Speaker 2: some stuff with his legs, had the two rushing touchdowns. Again,
- 10:33Speaker 2: there was one play where he tried so hard to
- 10:35Speaker 2: be cute with it, like pump fake to one side,
- 10:37Speaker 2: comes to the other side, but then he's late with
- 10:39Speaker 2: the throw and he gets zach Ertz blown up. Again,
- 10:41Speaker 2: that need to be faster with Nix. He had the
- 10:44Speaker 2: nice scramble touchdown late in the game to get them
- 10:46Speaker 2: back within a one score game against Seattle. But the
- 10:49Speaker 2: two picks were bad. I mean, the first one vertical route,
- 10:52Speaker 2: you're in field goal range. It's third down foot throw
- 10:55Speaker 2: late in the down, deep down field. It just floats.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You can't do that, you know, And I'm sure Champayne
- 11:00Speaker 2: said that to him when he came back to the sidelines.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Then the second pick, crossing route thrown into triple coverage.
- 11:05Speaker 2: That rarely ends well for a quarterback and certainly not
- 11:08Speaker 2: a rookie, And so lots of stuff for those that
- 11:10Speaker 2: to improve upon. But again, if you're a fan of
- 11:12Speaker 2: one of these three teams, like, don't panic yet, Like
- 11:14Speaker 2: grades weren't great, you know, and even I might be
- 11:16Speaker 2: greater on a curve, still not great. Give it time,
- 11:20Speaker 2: Give it to you know, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas time. That's
- 11:23Speaker 2: when you really start to see how they getting better
- 11:25Speaker 2: or are we still talking about some of these same mistakes.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think anybody that thought that they were going
- 11:29Speaker 1: to be lights out right out of the gate on
- 11:31Speaker 1: Week one, you don't know too much about football, frankly,
- 11:34Speaker 1: but mark one of the Lord and Curve exactly exactly. Well.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I wanted to get into a few teams now with
- 11:41Speaker 1: you in terms of what we saw from them and
- 11:44Speaker 1: what we didn't see from them. First and foremost the
- 11:48Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals here, man, I just want to get your
- 11:50Speaker 1: thoughts on how and why the Bengals played the type
- 11:52Speaker 1: of football they played this past Sunday. I mean, frankly,
- 11:55Speaker 1: it was uninspiring. It was pretty terrible football, especially on
- 12:00Speaker 1: offense from a team that has weapons, and they have
- 12:04Speaker 1: a quarterback that's been there for quite some time, a
- 12:06Speaker 1: wide receiver that's one of the top wide receivers in
- 12:09Speaker 1: the league. I mean when you have a talent like
- 12:11Speaker 1: Jamar Chase and you only target them six times. There's
- 12:14Speaker 1: an issue there in my opinion with that. Where did
- 12:17Speaker 1: it go wrong for the Bengals here in Week one?
- 12:18Speaker 1: And how do you think they're going to get it
- 12:19Speaker 1: together and respond here?
- 12:22Speaker 2: I mean, I'd love to sit here as a Patriots
- 12:23Speaker 2: fan and say it's because the Patriots are surprisingly the
- 12:26Speaker 2: best team, but that's not the answer here, Jeff. I mean,
- 12:29Speaker 2: we've seen this from Cincinnati before, right, Like it almost
- 12:33Speaker 2: seems like they're a franchise that's like taking that Belichick
- 12:36Speaker 2: page out of the playbook where you use September as
- 12:39Speaker 2: almost an extension of training camp to see what you
- 12:41Speaker 2: do well so you can set yourself up to play
- 12:44Speaker 2: your best football in you know, December and January. So
- 12:47Speaker 2: you know, we've seen this from them before. I also
- 12:50Speaker 2: think that like, look, Chase had the sort of hold
- 12:53Speaker 2: in situation with the contract status, so this was his
- 12:56Speaker 2: first real sustained action of the season. Really yeah, takings
- 12:59Speaker 2: with Hay with an injury issue. So I think there's
- 13:03Speaker 2: you know, part of the issue there with their offensive
- 13:05Speaker 2: weapons like not being on the same page, not being available.
- 13:08Speaker 2: There's also and this is something that they talked about
- 13:10Speaker 2: during the broadcast of that game. Burrow's preference for being
- 13:14Speaker 2: in the shotgun so we can see things and see
- 13:17Speaker 2: the field. While that can pay dividends in the passing game,
- 13:21Speaker 2: it really limits what you can do run game wise,
- 13:24Speaker 2: and limits what you can do play action pass and wise.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Like you know, it sort of limits what you can
- 13:29Speaker 2: call from an offensive coordinator, play caller standpoint and so well,
- 13:32Speaker 2: that's been a point of tension with this Bengals offense
- 13:35Speaker 2: for years now. You know, the Burrow's reliance on being
- 13:39Speaker 2: in the shotgun sort of hamstrings what they can call conceptually.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And he's not the only quarterback that's had to go
- 13:45Speaker 2: through this. If you remember when when Peyton Manning made
- 13:48Speaker 2: the move to Denver, you know, he really wanted to
- 13:52Speaker 2: be in the shotgun as well because he liked the ability.
- 13:54Speaker 2: But you know, with their offensive systems so much of
- 13:57Speaker 2: what they do or wanted you to be under center.
- 13:59Speaker 2: They've had that pistol compromise, it still sort of restricts
- 14:03Speaker 2: what you can do as a play call on So
- 14:04Speaker 2: there's some of that work as well. But we've seen
- 14:07Speaker 2: this from Cincinnati before, a similar to the rookie quarterbacks.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I'm not panicking yet. I do think it's interesting that
- 14:14Speaker 2: in that division where we thought, oh, hey, Bengals are
- 14:16Speaker 2: gonna be good, Ravens are gonna be good. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: Browns are gonna be good, Steelers were wondering about them.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Here we are after Week one. It's the Steelers that
- 14:23Speaker 2: I want to know and everybody else is only one. Right.
- 14:25Speaker 1: That's very interesting, absolutely well. The next team mark is
- 14:28Speaker 1: the New York Giants that I wanted to dive into
- 14:31Speaker 1: here did not look good, and as an Eagles fan,
- 14:33Speaker 1: I'm not too broken up about that. But you know,
- 14:36Speaker 1: you saw what Saquon Barkley did with the Eagles in
- 14:38Speaker 1: Week one, how he was utilized, how he's running behind
- 14:42Speaker 1: a pretty darn good offensive line in Philly. Daniel Jones
- 14:46Speaker 1: in this Giants game just seem to be, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: the guy who you know, he was just there. He
- 14:53Speaker 1: just was the quarterback that was there. And that's who
- 14:56Speaker 1: New York has invested in in the future. Here they decided,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you now, we're gonna let Saquon walk. Daniel Jones is
- 15:03Speaker 1: the guy, and whether or not he takes them to
- 15:06Speaker 1: that next level, it just doesn't seem like it here
- 15:09Speaker 1: after week one, and again it is week one. What
- 15:12Speaker 1: are your thoughts on what we saw from the Giants,
- 15:14Speaker 1: from Daniel Jones and a team that's just trying to
- 15:16Speaker 1: trying to gain some relevance within the NFC East.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I'm gonna quote from the Gospel, quoted to my Lak neighbors. Okay,
- 15:25Speaker 2: I don't really know what's going on back there, And
- 15:27Speaker 2: that was what he said after the game. I believe
- 15:29Speaker 2: that was a quote about quarterback position. But oh man,
- 15:33Speaker 2: it looks bad.
- 15:34Speaker 1: It looks terrible.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I'm not talking about the uniforms, which weren't great, those throwbacks.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I saw somebody on social media say it's like the
- 15:41Speaker 2: Montreal Canadians and the Michigan Wolverines got together and created
- 15:46Speaker 2: a uniform because it's red blue, but looks like Michigan's horrendous.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Fuck great, it's not great. And then the Bay pants.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You catch it in the right light and it doesn't
- 15:55Speaker 2: look like the players wearing pants. Yes, well, but offensively,
- 15:59Speaker 2: look it's it doesn't look great. Right now. They're certainly struggling.
- 16:04Speaker 2: They're struggling on both sides of the football. I mean
- 16:06Speaker 2: to you know, give up the points that they did,
- 16:08Speaker 2: the production that they did from the quarterback that they
- 16:10Speaker 2: were going up against a huge question mark. Yep, it's
- 16:14Speaker 2: a sort of a it seems like it's a disaster
- 16:17Speaker 2: waiting to happen in New York City. Now again, it's
- 16:19Speaker 2: week one, it's Monday. It's overreaction Monday after Week one.
- 16:24Speaker 2: You know, maybe they sort of figure it out with
- 16:26Speaker 2: Daniel Jones. But you might look back on their decision
- 16:30Speaker 2: to pass on some of the quarterbacks in this draft
- 16:34Speaker 2: class and run it back from one more year with
- 16:36Speaker 2: Daniel Jones as a bad move, particularly when you start
- 16:42Speaker 2: looking around the college football landscape and again early in
- 16:46Speaker 2: the college football season. But none of the young quarterbacks
- 16:49Speaker 2: in the college game right now are really sort of
- 16:50Speaker 2: blowing the doors off, right. Well, this person's absolutely going
- 16:55Speaker 2: to be a stud in the NFL. I mean, should
- 16:57Speaker 2: Sanders has shown some moments, Carson Back is showing some moments.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Krniwers has shown some moments. But there's more questions than
- 17:03Speaker 2: answers in the next quarterback. Last, and the one big
- 17:07Speaker 2: potential free agent out there, Dak Prescott just resigned with Dallas,
- 17:11Speaker 2: so that potentially off the table. So where did the
- 17:13Speaker 2: Giants go from here, ak quarterback, more questions and answers
- 17:16Speaker 2: in the Big Apple. When the New York Giants right
- 17:18Speaker 2: now Week one, as we just heard from a league
- 17:21Speaker 2: neighbors don't know what's going on back there. Doesn't look
- 17:24Speaker 2: like there's any answers coming anytime soon.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well moving along here, Mark, The
- 17:29Speaker 1: Saints absolutely destroyed the Panthers. Two teams were coming into
- 17:33Speaker 1: this season. You knew they probably weren't going to be
- 17:35Speaker 1: all that great, But man, David Carr, I mean, what
- 17:39Speaker 1: a nice game he had. Overall. He was spreading the
- 17:41Speaker 1: ball out to a number of receivers and Alvin Kamara.
- 17:45Speaker 1: He was averaging five point five yards per carry. So
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm wondering, like the million dollar question here when reflecting
- 17:50Speaker 1: on this game, as I, in all honesty, did not
- 17:54Speaker 1: watch this game, only saw highlights, looked at the box score.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Are the Saints a really good team here? Or are
- 18:00Speaker 1: the pants Panthers just really that bad?
- 18:04Speaker 2: In the run up to the season, we put up
- 18:06Speaker 2: a piece on xpianation at the teams that confused us
- 18:08Speaker 2: the most, and one of the ones I put in
- 18:10Speaker 2: there was New Orleans because I don't know what to
- 18:12Speaker 2: make of that team. And I still don't know what
- 18:14Speaker 2: to make of that team because you know, I had,
- 18:17Speaker 2: you know, the quad box going on YouTube TV Sunday ticket.
- 18:21Speaker 2: It's very pricey, I understand, but the ability to create
- 18:24Speaker 2: your own multi viewer, it's a nice little feature that
- 18:26Speaker 2: they introduced this year. And so I could have you know,
- 18:28Speaker 2: Patriots game in one corner, and I had this game
- 18:30Speaker 2: down in the bottom left corner, so I was like
- 18:33Speaker 2: going in and out of it. I think there's also
- 18:35Speaker 2: something to be said that the Panthers are bad. You know,
- 18:38Speaker 2: we're learned that Derek Brown has a knee injury now,
- 18:40Speaker 2: and so that's a situation that you know, they have
- 18:43Speaker 2: to deal with because you know, look, one of your
- 18:45Speaker 2: best players now has a knee injury and could be
- 18:47Speaker 2: out for the season. Like that's certainly a problem, you
- 18:50Speaker 2: know with a meniscus injury, Like do they fix it
- 18:52Speaker 2: now or do they handle that a different way? So
- 18:55Speaker 2: that's something I'll watch with Carolina Bryce Young. Obviously, the
- 18:58Speaker 2: hope is that Brysiu was going to say a big
- 19:00Speaker 2: step forward under Dave Canali's it's gonna be looking more
- 19:03Speaker 2: like the quarterback that Carolina thought they were getting when
- 19:05Speaker 2: they drafted him first. Overall, that doesn't seem to be
- 19:08Speaker 2: the case. And so you know, that offense looks bad.
- 19:11Speaker 2: That defense now with Derek Brown with his potential season
- 19:14Speaker 2: ending injury, they got beat up up front. They were
- 19:17Speaker 2: giving up, like you said, five point five yards per
- 19:19Speaker 2: carry to Alvin Kamara. Derek Carr looked great. I'm still
- 19:23Speaker 2: confused by the Saints. I don't know if they're really
- 19:26Speaker 2: as good as yesterday showed, or if the Panthers are
- 19:28Speaker 2: just that bad. Yeah, leaning towards it being that the
- 19:31Speaker 2: Panthers are just that bad.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm wondering from a quarterback situation for my fantasy
- 19:35Speaker 1: league quite frankly, because I've got Jordan Love and he's
- 19:38Speaker 1: gonna be out for a few weeks for sure, And
- 19:41Speaker 1: the only quarterbacks left in my league are Deshaun Watson,
- 19:44Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, Bo Nicks, and dear David.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Carr probably the best, probably the rest, Like I think
- 19:52Speaker 2: Knicks will get better, I don't know enough I think. Look,
- 19:57Speaker 2: Carr's gonna see the Panthers again, Yes, you know, I'm
- 19:59Speaker 2: gonna get one more game against that team. You know,
- 20:01Speaker 2: Atlanta's defense didn't look great yesterday. So you have two
- 20:04Speaker 2: games against Atlanta, like you get that NFC. I think
- 20:06Speaker 2: they get a second or third place schedule anyway, that
- 20:09Speaker 2: NFC sauce schedule. That's probably where I'd go if I
- 20:12Speaker 2: were you, my friend.
- 20:13Speaker 1: All right, sounds I think, I said. David Carr by
- 20:15Speaker 1: accident and Derek Carr of course, I'm all messed up
- 20:17Speaker 1: when it comes to my fantasy league.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Now, car brothers are in a chain.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Very true, Very true. All right, folks, Mark Schofield from
- 20:25Speaker 1: esp Nation, follow him on the Twitter at Mark Schofield
- 20:29Speaker 1: and check out everything they got going on over at
- 20:31Speaker 1: ESP Nation. Before I let you go, Mark, one last topic.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I know we've been talking about some poor football play
- 20:37Speaker 1: during this interview and discussion, but to close out our
- 20:42Speaker 1: discussion here, what NFL team really surprised you the most
- 20:45Speaker 1: right out of the gate in Week one in a
- 20:47Speaker 1: very positive way. What are your thoughts there.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Tampa Bay? Yeah, the Bucketeers look great. You know I
- 20:53Speaker 2: wrote about Baker this morning. You know we had the
- 20:55Speaker 2: four touchdown passes. You know, I think some of that
- 20:58Speaker 2: book there were some coverage breakdown in the Commander's secondary
- 21:01Speaker 2: like the past to Jalen McMillan. You had you had
- 21:04Speaker 2: two defenders bite it on a curl route underneath from
- 21:06Speaker 2: the tyn end and he's wide open. You know, so
- 21:08Speaker 2: that's an easy touchdown. You get two vertical routes to
- 21:11Speaker 2: Mike Evans, who made some great players on the football. Yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 2: you know concept. But Godwin was wide open. But Baker
- 21:16Speaker 2: looked confident, he looked decisive, looked like he was in
- 21:20Speaker 2: full command of that offense. And look, that was one
- 21:23Speaker 2: of the question marks the NFC selt again a confusion division.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You know, similar to last year. I said this on
- 21:28Speaker 2: the radio last week. You know, last year, Carr comes
- 21:31Speaker 2: down to New Orleans and it's like, hey, look that's
- 21:33Speaker 2: the most settled quarterback position in that division. You know,
- 21:37Speaker 2: Tampa Bay's got the Baker Mayfield Kyle Trask quarterback battle.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You got year two of desin Ritter year want of
- 21:42Speaker 2: Bryce Young Car's gonna come in stable veteran presidence. They're
- 21:46Speaker 2: gonna win the division going away. Didn't turn out that way.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Tampa Bay wins it. Then this year you got Kirk
- 21:51Speaker 2: Cousins coming down, stable quarterback presidence. Who knows David Canalis
- 21:55Speaker 2: is now leaving to go to Carolina. Will Baker have
- 21:57Speaker 2: a drop off there? Who knows what Canalis can do
- 21:59Speaker 2: with young Who knows what you're going to see down
- 22:01Speaker 2: in New Orleans with car after what happened last year,
- 22:03Speaker 2: Atlanta's gonna run away with their division. Well, not so
- 22:06Speaker 2: fast Tampa Bay on Sunday, and so I was very
- 22:09Speaker 2: impressed with Tampa Bay. I thought it was a gutty
- 22:12Speaker 2: win last night from Detroit. You know that those are
- 22:15Speaker 2: two very good football teams. I think, you know, I
- 22:17Speaker 2: think both the Rams and the lines will be in
- 22:19Speaker 2: it at the end. But to have that kind of
- 22:22Speaker 2: physical win, I mean, that's probably the best offensive line
- 22:25Speaker 2: in football right now. Watch that drive in overtime. They
- 22:28Speaker 2: just had that Rams defensive front on skates. Now, fatigue
- 22:31Speaker 2: was probably a factor there, but by the end, and
- 22:34Speaker 2: that's certainly that final touchdown run from Montgomery. You know,
- 22:36Speaker 2: when you re establish and reset the lineup script's two
- 22:39Speaker 2: yards upfield, three yards upfield. As an offensive line, you're
- 22:42Speaker 2: gonna win football games. That's a team built in the
- 22:45Speaker 2: mold of their coach and Dan Campbell. I was very
- 22:48Speaker 2: impressed with the lines, with that gutty win, but certainly
- 22:50Speaker 2: impressed with that Baker Mayfield and company did down in
- 22:52Speaker 2: Tampa Bay.
- 22:53Speaker 1: When you actually watch a football game and you come
- 22:55Speaker 1: away with it saying, wow, that offensive line was phenomenal
- 22:58Speaker 1: and fantastic, you're watching pretty good football and that's that's
- 23:01Speaker 1: definitely what we saw.
- 23:03Speaker 2: They are a dominant force upfront. And look, the Eagles
- 23:06Speaker 2: have a very good offensive line. Still obviously retirement, you
- 23:09Speaker 2: know as a factor there, Twitsch push might not be
- 23:12Speaker 2: as effective, right right, Yeah, you know they've got stalked
- 23:15Speaker 2: on that Friday, but you know they've got a good
- 23:17Speaker 2: offensive line. You know, Cleveland, the two tackles were out yesterday,
- 23:20Speaker 2: but when they're healthy, they've got a good offensive line.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I think Indy's got a good offensive line. But you
- 23:25Speaker 2: look at what Detroit can do up front. When they
- 23:28Speaker 2: can again re established that line of scrimmage reset at
- 23:31Speaker 2: three yards upfield, you're gonna win football games.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely again, folks. Mark Schofield from s B Nation,
- 23:38Speaker 1: my friend, it was great talking with you. Let's talk
- 23:40Speaker 1: more football down the road. Maybe we'll get into some
- 23:42Speaker 1: F one too. I don't know, maybe you can teach
- 23:45Speaker 1: me a little something.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Do the little left one tis here. Look, if you've
- 23:49Speaker 2: waited to get into this sport. Now is the time,
- 23:51Speaker 2: you know, because you know the past two seasons, red
- 23:54Speaker 2: Bull has been dominant for staffans, been dominant. You turn
- 23:57Speaker 2: it for to watch a race and was over two laps.
- 24:01Speaker 2: You've had seven different winners this year. We've got a
- 24:03Speaker 2: legitimate title fight on both the drivers and the constructors.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And you're gonna have two races here in the States
- 24:08Speaker 2: down the stretch. You've got Austin and October, Vegas and November.
- 24:11Speaker 2: This might be a season similar to twenty one, where
- 24:14Speaker 2: it goes down to the last race, the last lap,
- 24:16Speaker 2: the last corner of the year. And so if you've
- 24:18Speaker 2: been waiting to get in, now's the time. And I'm
- 24:20Speaker 2: happy to help over at Espanation.
- 24:22Speaker 1: All right, folks, Mark Scofield from Espionation, come back and
- 24:25Speaker 1: join us down the road.
- 24:26Speaker 2: My friend, absolutely, my friend, always a blast.
