Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How Can You Be More Present In Your Day-to-Day?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Doatti here. You're listening to five Minute
- 0:23Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle. I had a moment this week that
- 0:28Speaker 1: I knew as soon as it happened it was exactly
- 0:30Speaker 1: what I was going to talk about here today. And
- 0:33Speaker 1: that moment happened when I was in yoga at Liinstein
- 0:37Speaker 1: to Studio over in Chelsea. I was there on Wednesday morning,
- 0:43Speaker 1: ticking class and I found myself. It was like as
- 0:47Speaker 1: though I had completely lost myself in the middle of
- 0:49Speaker 1: the practice. We were about halfway through and I was
- 0:53Speaker 1: in my favorite pose. It sounds I don't know how
- 0:57Speaker 1: it sounds. I feel a little lame saying this, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: my favorite yoga pose is tree pose. I don't really
- 1:03Speaker 1: have a rhyme or reason. I know that it works
- 1:05Speaker 1: ankle stability, which as someone who is not getting planter veggiitis,
- 1:10Speaker 1: this is something that I am sensitive too. But regardless
- 1:14Speaker 1: of that, I just always love how grounded and solid
- 1:18Speaker 1: I feel in that specific pose. Now, for those of
- 1:21Speaker 1: you not familiar with tree pose, generally speaking, you stand
- 1:25Speaker 1: on one foot, you put your other foot, the sole
- 1:28Speaker 1: of your foot on the inside of your inner thigh,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and you raise your arms up and in the air,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and so I was standing there in tree pose, my
- 1:38Speaker 1: right foot was on my left thigh, and I had
- 1:41Speaker 1: a moment when I didn't remember or realize like how
- 1:44Speaker 1: I got there, Like I was so in my own
- 1:47Speaker 1: head thinking about other things that I had obviously been
- 1:50Speaker 1: listening to the queuing of the instructor, but did not
- 1:54Speaker 1: remember getting into this place where I was in my
- 1:56Speaker 1: favorite pose. And it was so real for me. It
- 2:01Speaker 1: was as though like the things that had been going
- 2:05Speaker 1: on throughout the week kind of really just hit me
- 2:09Speaker 1: like head on, and that I feel as though a
- 2:12Speaker 1: lot of the things that I've been doing this week
- 2:14Speaker 1: I have just been on autopilot. I haven't been present.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I've been taking meetings and answering emails and working on
- 2:22Speaker 1: who knows what, And I look up and all of
- 2:26Speaker 1: a sudden, an entire day has gone by, and I'm
- 2:29Speaker 1: realizing that I keep just ending up in tree pos. Now, luckily,
- 2:33Speaker 1: in this instance, I'm miraculously in my favorite pose. But Hi,
- 2:39Speaker 1: I want to feel that, just like I want to
- 2:42Speaker 1: feel everything, you know, the good and the bad. There
- 2:45Speaker 1: is this principle in the IPECK, the Certified Professional Coach
- 2:52Speaker 1: course that I'm Finishing Up now put on by the
- 2:55Speaker 1: Institute of Professional Excellence and Coaching. A lot of big
- 2:59Speaker 1: words there, and the principle is there are no mistakes,
- 3:03Speaker 1: there are only lessons. And so I'm not angry at
- 3:07Speaker 1: all about the fact that I feel as though I
- 3:10Speaker 1: have been just going on autopilot. But I now have
- 3:14Speaker 1: this awareness that it's not what I want. I want
- 3:18Speaker 1: to soak it in. I want to soak in the
- 3:20Speaker 1: good moments. I want to experience, as hard as they
- 3:23Speaker 1: can be, the bad moments, and I want to be
- 3:27Speaker 1: a participant in my own life. And something that really
- 3:32Speaker 1: resonated with me from the conversation that I had earlier
- 3:35Speaker 1: this week with Danielle Laporte is she said that sometimes
- 3:40Speaker 1: we have to get to a point where it's like,
- 3:42Speaker 1: are you unhappy enough yet? Are you tired enough yet?
- 3:46Speaker 1: Are you fed up enough yet? And it's when we
- 3:50Speaker 1: get to that level of extreme that we are often
- 3:52Speaker 1: as humans, finally able to make a change. And so
- 3:56Speaker 1: I recognize this, and I see this, and I don't
- 3:59Speaker 1: want to be here. So it's time to make a shift.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And if you hear my story and it is something
- 4:05Speaker 1: that resonates with you, then I encourage you to pay
- 4:09Speaker 1: a little bit more attention along with me. That episode
- 4:12Speaker 1: I Reverence with Daniel Laporte. It's a hurdle moment on
- 4:15Speaker 1: how to identify patterns that are holding you back. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: will link to it in the show notes. My prompt
- 4:21Speaker 1: for you this week are you present in your day
- 4:24Speaker 1: to day? And if not, how can you be more so?
- 4:29Speaker 1: How can you be more present in your day to day?
- 4:32Speaker 1: And maybe, while you're at it, right down a highlight
- 4:35Speaker 1: from your week and now a listener question.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Marissa from Burlington, Vermont. I am
- 4:43Speaker 2: starting to shift my running goals and want to work
- 4:46Speaker 2: on becoming a stronger marathon runner. So my question is
- 4:50Speaker 2: what are the benefits of working with a running coach
- 4:54Speaker 2: and how would I go about finding a running coach
- 4:57Speaker 2: in my local area or using a running coach coach online?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being so open and honest
- 5:03Speaker 2: with everybody. It really is such an inspiration getting to
- 5:06Speaker 2: listen to your experiences as we navigate this athletic field.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Thanks again, Hey, Hey, thanks so much for your listener question.
- 5:15Speaker 1: As a reminder, if you have a question that you
- 5:17Speaker 1: want me to answer on an upcoming installment of five
- 5:19Speaker 1: Minute Friday. I would love to the link to leave
- 5:22Speaker 1: me a voice messages in the show notes, but if
- 5:24Speaker 1: you are more comfortable recording a voice recording on your
- 5:29Speaker 1: phone and sending it to us over email, that totally works.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Hit us up over at Hello at hurdle dot Us.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So running coaches huge fan of using a coach. Even
- 5:41Speaker 1: certified coaches need coaches. I have worked with many a
- 5:46Speaker 1: running coaches for many different reasons, and it is important
- 5:50Speaker 1: to identify your why before you hire one because knowing
- 5:53Speaker 1: your why can lead you in the direction of a
- 5:56Speaker 1: coach that may work best for you. So for me,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I have worked with a running coach at different times
- 6:03Speaker 1: with different whys. I've had the why of wanting to
- 6:07Speaker 1: get faster. I've also had the why of really seeking
- 6:10Speaker 1: an accountability buddy, and so knowing that I was able
- 6:14Speaker 1: to talk to different coaches and vet them, so to speak,
- 6:18Speaker 1: to figure out which relationship, which dynamic felt right for
- 6:22Speaker 1: me in the space that I was in knowing my why,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and as Marisa mentioned, you can work with a coach
- 6:28Speaker 1: remotely or in person, and often coaches will have different
- 6:32Speaker 1: plans based on what they know that their clients may want.
- 6:37Speaker 1: They could have an option where they run with you
- 6:39Speaker 1: once a week, once a month, or they could just
- 6:42Speaker 1: create you a plan. They can be available over texts,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so feel free to ask a potential coach what they
- 6:48Speaker 1: typically offer their clients and make sure that it matches
- 6:51Speaker 1: up with what it is that you are seeking. You
- 6:54Speaker 1: will never regret over communicating what it is that you
- 6:57Speaker 1: are after from the get go so that you can
- 6:59Speaker 1: manage those expectations, especially because, let's be real, running can
- 7:04Speaker 1: feel hard enough sometimes. So when it comes to choosing
- 7:07Speaker 1: your coach, first and foremost, make sure that they have
- 7:09Speaker 1: a relevant certification. You want a coach that has done
- 7:13Speaker 1: the work. I would say the most prevalent certifications out
- 7:16Speaker 1: there are USA, TF, McMillan, Coaching, UESCA, r r CA,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and ISSA. So definitely look to see that the coach
- 7:28Speaker 1: you are interested in working with has a certification that
- 7:31Speaker 1: they have done the important work that they need to
- 7:34Speaker 1: do so that they can help you get to where
- 7:36Speaker 1: you want to be. Beyond that, you want to make
- 7:38Speaker 1: sure that you get on a call with them so
- 7:39Speaker 1: that you can feel it out. As cool as someone
- 7:42Speaker 1: may seem to you on social media, there is going
- 7:44Speaker 1: to be a vibe there. You've got to do a
- 7:46Speaker 1: vibe check and make sure that theirs fits with yours.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And I'll just reiterate this more time. Know what you
- 7:52Speaker 1: want going into it. So maybe you just want a
- 7:54Speaker 1: coach to create a custom plan for you. Maybe you
- 7:57Speaker 1: do want someone that's going to text you regularly. Perhaps
- 8:00Speaker 1: you want someone who is coaching a group and so
- 8:03Speaker 1: you can have other people that you're chatting with and
- 8:05Speaker 1: running with and communicating with, whether it be Irl or
- 8:09Speaker 1: over Slacker, Zoom or whatever. You get the point. But
- 8:12Speaker 1: knowing exactly what you want, not only from your coach
- 8:15Speaker 1: but also from your experience is really going to help
- 8:18Speaker 1: you get to exactly where you want to be and
- 8:21Speaker 1: on your way to whatever your big goal might be too.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I think that's it for now. Make sure you're following
- 8:27Speaker 1: along with Hurdle over on the Socialists at Hurdle podcast.
