- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: It's week eight already, the final week of the regular season.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: It has flown.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: In this episode, Roger Neal will cover the non-divisional game between Elmira and Union Endicott.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I will cover the Class C divisional game between Watkins-Glen Odessa Montour and Susquehanna Valley.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't believe it, Roger.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: It's the last week of the regular season, week eight.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So let it rip, Roger, and take us down the road.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Time flying, no question about it.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Teams prepping for the postseason.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: As you said, the last regular season game on the schedule.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Elmyra's Express will match up against the UE.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: The double A team against Union Endicott.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: A few years back, they were double A as well.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Now Class A.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Let's take a look at what happened last week.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Corning rolled to a 31-8 win over Elmira.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Coming in, Elmyra's record 3-4 overall, one and one in double A.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Now they have wins um in overall play against Baldwin's Bill, Horseheads, and Binghamton.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And they've been averaging 17.6 points a game, but they've given up an average of 22 points a game.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: One of the big keys for them going into this game and going forward is quarterback Evan Garvin.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Garvin was injured late in the first quarter of last week's game when they played Corning, and Corning ended up blowing out Elmira 31-8, pretty much due to that.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Because after Garvin left, they fumbled a snap, fumbled a snap again on another possession, and then had a safety.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And then their onside kick was picked up by the Hawks.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: So things really went downhill after their starting quarterback came back.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: No word as to whether he'll be able to return to play, but obviously he is a big key.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Now, a win for the Hawks against Elmira gave them the top seed going forward into the double A section for playoffs.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Elmira, now a second seed in double A.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: What about U East Tigers?
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Two and five overall, one and one in class A, and they have wins overall against Vestal and Binghamton for their two victories.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: 125 points four, 18 points a game average.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: They've given up 211, 30 points per game average against.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So defense has been the major problem for them.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Last week, UE crushed Binghamton at Binghamton 36-8, and they had three touchdowns in the first quarter, led 29-0 at the half.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So they had no problem at all dispatching the Binghamton Patriots.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So Carrie Wells Taylor, outstanding runner for the Tigers, Logan Barnes also.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: So the ground game has been a big key for them.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And so the playoffs are coming up, and it'll be very interesting.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: But before that, some scores to settle.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Elmira at Tycod Stadium against the UB Tigers, wrapping up the regular season this weekend, Tim.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So we'll keep an eye out and look for some outstanding football to wrap things up in the regular campaign.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Thank you again, Roger.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Appreciate what you do.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Take care, coach.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Have a good one.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You too.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Now our second game of the week.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Watkins Glenn Odessimontur visits Susquehanna Valley.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Both teams received New York State honorable mention recognition last week.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: They are currently tied for third in Class C.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: The winner will remain in third and in all likelihood will travel to Shenango Forks for a first-round playoff game.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: The loser will drop to fourth place and travel to Waverly for a first-round playoff game.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Win or lose, each team will face a tough opponent in a first-round road playoff game.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: This will be senior night at Susquehanna Valley.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Kickoff is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: at Sabres Field.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Now for the visiting team, the Watkins Glen Odessa Montour Storm, led by Coach Trevor Holland.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Watkins Glen Odessa Montour comes into this game 2-2 in the division and 5-3 overall.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: They're riding a two-game win streak with a combined score of 124-30.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Last week they beat Whitney Point 69 to 16.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: They've scored 239 points and allowed 184.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: They averaged 30 points a game while allowing 23.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And in week three, they lost to Waverly 6-56.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: The Susquehanna Valley Sabres are led by coach Mike Ford.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Susquehanna Valley comes into this game 2-2 in the division and 4-3 overall.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Susquehanna Valley beat Dryden last week 39 to 14.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: They have scored 175 points this season and allowed a total of 160.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: They averaged 25 points per game while allowing 23 points per game.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And Susquehanna Valley didn't fare much better against either of their potential playoff opponents either.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Week 5 they lost to Shenango Forks, 0 to 32, and week 6, they lost to Waverly, 12 to 42.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: This game has the potential to be a highly competitive game.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: The student athletes to watch, and as I've said for weeks now, this is in addition to the outstanding linemen for each team, and here are the few student athletes who will impact the outcome of this game.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: For Watkins Glenn Odisimontur, Storm, Gavin Lohmeyer, Brad Gillis, Ryan Willett, Nick Devalia, and Brady Cannon.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: For Susquehanna Valley, Johnny Cortiz, Ian Harder, and Luke Carum.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Now for the Ask Coach Smith segment.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Sally writes, Hey Coach Smith, I've heard you mention you used to scout high school student athletes for college.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: What should a student athlete consider when choosing a college?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Thank you for your question, Sally.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: There are a few things prospective college student athletes should consider.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: First and foremost, they should understand what they would like to do the rest of their life.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: And also possibly a secondary interest.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: They need an idea of their geographical preference, how far they'd like to be away from home, so that their parents and relatives and family and guardians can come and watch them compete.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Based on the sport they want to compete in, they need to get a realistic understanding of what level they can compete at.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And I want to stress that.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: A realistic understanding of what level they can compete at.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Some of their choices range from college preparatory school, which is referred to as prep schools.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: They have junior colleges, they're typically two-year institutions, the NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association, comprised of Divisions I, II, and II.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And the NAIA, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, comprised of Division I or Division II.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: When considering a college, don't worry about the two or four-year commitment.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Be concerned with what those years will mean to you the rest of your life.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: College is an investment in your future.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It's about books, then balls.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: The term student athlete is not an oxymoron.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Those seniors listening, your assignment is to research the word oxymoron and post your definition on the cover four Twitter account.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I encourage all of you to submit your questions and recommendations.
