- Jaba: Hello everybody and welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is your host, Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards, joined as always by my co-host, Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB underscore cards underscore. And we are getting back on the horse today. We are picking up our AFL daily recaps. This is Monday, October nineteenth. There were no games yesterday, Sunday. I don't know if that was a scheduling thing or just weather. But there were three games on Saturday that we have not yet covered, so we're gonna get into those for ya. Jeremy, what's the what's the first game that you are hitting us with here? Jheremy: I'm gonna jump right on into the Salt River Rafters and the Mesa Solar Socks and quite honestly there's a whole lot nah to talk about. Jared Thomas playing center field though. That's interesting. say what? Jaba: Jay Cuck. Jheremy: Yeah, he's on the other team. We're not there yet. Andy Perez, old Bowman guy, 303, picked up a hit, couple of walks. Yasser Mercedes, right? Is that Yasser? I believe so. He he had Jaba: Yeah, yes, yes. Jheremy: a pair of strikeouts. There's not a whole lot of Bowman here. Yasil Soler was kind of one of those cheap names early, like maybe he does something, maybe he doesn't. He he he's much more leaning towards him, maybe he doesn't right now. He's got a four. fourteen OPS. not a whole lot that we like. let's see, what else we got? Quark Jaba: Hitching looks relevant. Jheremy: Yeah, that's probably the highlight here is one Patrick Forbes and two BC John West throwing out there. Jaba: Big man. Jheremy: Two innings, three strikeouts. But Patrick Forbes had another good outing. Four strikeouts, two and two thirds, two walks, one hit allowed. Probably that ERA ERA down to one six nine. Somebody we thought was gonna do pretty well. Be a guy to kinda buy because he was so cheap. And Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Kinda had a late start to the year. Older guy, college guy, newer arm wasn't a primary arm when he first got to campus. So kinda like that. Joe Ariola, he doesn't have Bowman, but he's a really funky lefty out of Wake Forest. Struck out two over an inning. probably a reliever through and through. So even if he gets a Bowman auto, it's probably not gonna jump as it should. Other side though, we got Jake Cook, like you said, another two-hit game, went two for four, had that average right at a 360. For the first time this year, he did get caught stealing as well. Arjun, kind of an empty box score, picked up a walk, but he still has an 11, an 1113 OPS, which we like to see. And Antonio Anderson, interestingly enough, is over at first base. Obviously, he can't play on the left side the whole time. So getting some reps there, picked up another hit. Did strike out two, his stuff has jumped. Like, we're gonna do an AFL buy buy, sell, hold. He's gonna be on there. I won't tell you where, you can kind of figure that one out, I bet, based off his prices and where he was a week ago. But I mean, man, he's he's doing what he needs to do to just maintain and he's proving it's not the hot start because he's continuing to do it. Cade Snell, one for three, punched out a pair of times. Same thing for Bryson Guaidez, but he his one hit was at least a double. second one of the AFL as on Zanatello and an Ofer with he he had a hat trick. boy. Kate Snells leading the way of that trio with 286 average. 185, 143 for Guaidez and Zanatello. Mason White is gonna be an interesting Red Sox guy, not having the best of AFL, but he has bat speed, he has juice, he's from the left side. Second baseman and Owen Carey punched out twice. It was not a good day offensively for the old Solar Sox. Punched out twelve times and well they put zeros up on the board for all seven innings. That is what I got. Now it is your turn. Jaba: Yeah, before we move on from that I do just wanna note, Namala didn't do anything Saturday, but I did see he was the hitter of the week for week Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: two. Well deserved. end of the year hot playing hot in the AFL. Good stuff for him. All right, now I'm gonna get into the desert dogs against the Segueros. I try to keep this podcast family friendly, but th things have gotten so insane. I Whoever is managing the desert dogs, get it the fuck together. They're two and ten. They lost Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: ten zero. I I mean I mean seriously. Like like I like I've said before, we shouldn't judge a team based off how many Bowman guys they have, but this team has so much talent. I would imagine it's the most top one hundred prospects. They're they're not only two and ten, but they're just getting blown out. Jheremy: Christ. Yeah. Jaba: they had two hits in this one, zero walks and eleven K's. It's like d does anybody wanna be there? Like Jheremy: With three errors too. Jaba: Like seriously, a and the the craziest part of all of it is Caleb Bonimer doubled in this one, he's OPSing ten forty two. He he's more than pulling his weight. Chase Harlan was for three with a hat trick of K's, but he has an eight ninety three OPS. he he's pulling his weight. Even who who is that? Dylan Lewis? Yeah, Dylan Lewis Jheremy: Dylan Lewis, yep. Jaba: Also for 303Ks. He's OPSing 806, so he's allowed to have a night off. What's crazy to me, Eduardo Quintero 0 for two night, now he's OPSing 512. That's r pretty concerning to me. I I know he's been moving fairly slowly because of the amount of outfielders they have, but that's not what you want to see out of Eduardo Quintero, who's what, a top twenty five, thirty guy in the sport right Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jaba: now? you look at Carter Johnson, right? He might as well have not even shown up. He's OPSing five twenty-six. He's hitting one twenty-five. He's obviously not close to Cantero in terms of stature, but we were both excited. I know I was excited that he took a nice step in the right direction Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: this year. And I don't want to say that he's undoing all that goodwill, but this is concerning. I mean, he he was a guy where I was like, Yeah, maybe I'll buy some pieces. I'm turned off of that now. Wyatt Sanford's been okay too. Six ninety eight OPS, but he went O for three. Tate South has seen O for three. It it you know, guys just have to start doing something because Jheremy: Tate's just getting back into it too. He's just I think he's two or three games in. Jaba: Yeah. I I there there's just too much talent on this team and I obviously you're gonna have off nights, but having two hits and not drawing a single walk it it it's just ugly. And the the guys pitching against them, I I see Irving Cota doesn't even have a picture on the MILB website. Jheremy: Or Peyton Prescott who started the game. Jaba: Yeah, i it's not like it was Jarlon Susanna or even a Patrick Forbes just going on a heater. The it it just wasn't big names and it it it's concerning to see a lot of guys end a nice full year campaign on a sour note. Over with the Segueros, Zion Rose continues to be hot, definitely boosting his stock ahead of Bowman draft. Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: he's only hitting two sixty three, but the OPS is over a thousand, he went two for two. Walked twice, just a guy getting on base like crazy, every single plate appearance. He stole his third base of the campaign. He's just playing really well. Jheremy: Yep. Jaba: Wellbin Francisca, three for four. Now hitting six fifteen with a sixteen eighteen OPS. I know I at least when we previewed it, I was a little skeptical on the power outbreak this year. I think Jeremy was a bit more rosy on him. I was I was off on that because he he's just playing out of his mind right now. Sebastian Walcott, another one for four day para RBIs. He's just doing his thing. Nothing eye popping, but he's got an eight forty five OPS. You know, last guy you need to be concerned about. Cole Mathis continues to struggle. O for four, one sixty seven average. Didn't strike out at the very least. Dante Norrie got a double, pushes the OPS to four eighty one. Boston Barrow, former Met er former Met Bowman draft guy, still in the Mets organization, although he's fallen out of the top thirty. one for two with a pair of walks, but he's still Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: hitting one hundred forty three with a five ninety eight OPS. Not gonna get it done. Bruin Agbayani hitting ninety one, so the Mets are also struggling. Jheremy: Hmm. Jaba: yeah, no no notable pitching. So I'll let you talk about the last game while I try to get my blood pressure back down. Jheremy: I mean, it's just like Wellman, right? Twenty twenty-three Bowman Chrome feels like a decade ago. And we'll we like to write guys off so quick, and like he's still only twenty years old. He would just be getting drafted this upcoming MLB draft. And I know I harp on that, but I think it's important just like he turns twenty one January, February, March, April, May, May. Like the start of what would be his junior year of college. He turns twenty one to then get eligible. Like and I get it, like the market doesn't care, people don't care. It's just why they should care. Like i if you're trying to buy cards and find the dip of a guy, like that's one thing to look at is the fact that he's still only twenty years old. And just place him in your mind where he would be stateside and it's like it makes it all the more like impressive for me anyway. Just yeah, he didn't hit the he didn't hit the road running as a seventeen year old. And make it to the big leagues at eighteen, like the Wonder Kins do. But like still. Come on. And of course, as we predicted, the Segueros are eight and three and their desert dogs are two and ten. Scorpio Correct. Jaba: To be fair, we did our projections before they got Rose, Walcott, and Aiden Miller. That that's like getting the monsters in there. Jheremy: Right. Big big difference. Yeah, so I have the Scorpions and Javelinas here to finish it, and boy, that is this week's wrap for the AFL breakthrough. Right rundown, because there ain't anything here to talk about. Nathan Floeling had another walk, another hit. That is literally about it. Jet Williams is down to one eleven with two strikeouts. Zaire Hope had an over day. Zy Namar Ochoa had a 0 for 3 day with a punchy. Batonti's down to 167. Did have a hit though. We like that. Did have a hit. also Flew Elling's hit was was a double. Wayne or Luciano's down to 188, 0 for 3. Matthew Wood, Nick Monasteri, they didn't do a whole lot. That team as a whole had two hits. Eric Batonti, Nathan Flew Elling. Other side, Vance Honeycutt's probably the big namesake there. He was on fire. Now he's down to a 200 average, still has an OPS with a decimal in it. With a number before the decimal, I guess. So I'll have a decimal in it. O for four, two punches. I mean, there there's really nothing else. Ty Harvey had a hit. Brandon Butterworth, pinch ran. And that is about it in terms of Bowman. Honestly. Sammy Hernandez went 0 for 3. Had a strikeout, hitting 214 on the year. what am I missing here? Canon Kemp. Jaba: Nah Mark. Jheremy: Canon Kemp dust that off. Actually, the pitching was good. Canon Kemp, I read, was up to like 99.3. Four innings, five strikeouts, two walks. ERA is inflated. That's what's going to happen when you have two, three inning sample sizes at a time. But stuff was there. Miguel Mendez on the other side. Don't look now. We talked about Joni L. Hernandez in the last episode being a part of that Robbie Ray trade. Three innings, three hits, one earned five strikeouts. Did let up another home run. He seems to be prone to at least one home run a time. An outing. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: This one came courtesy of Matthew Ellis, the 26-year-old left-handed hitting catcher. but yeah, I mean, maybe Miguel Mendez is starting to figure it out now. Down in the AFL, and his stuff is cheap. Like cheap, cheap. Like whatever you thought was cheap, it's cheaper than that. I think there was a true gold up at one point that you could bin for thirty-five dollars. And it's electric stuff. I think he was on I think Pipeline tweeted about him as well the other day, which is always good when you can get a pipeline tweet because it just helps with re name recognition everywhere. Jaba: yeah. Jheremy: I'm almost positive they tweeted about him. Yeah, pipeline. Pipeline. Jaba: Well while you look Yeah. Jheremy: He's got twelve punches and two seven and two thirds in the AFL. Like he had an abysmal once he got traded, kind of End of the year, but like the stuff is there. So it's a might be a buy. I'm gonna jump and just go to the buy sell hold and give him as a buy right now. Jaba: There you Jheremy: Impromptu. What's up? What do you got? Jaba: Robbie Ray in nine starts with the Padres. This will make a little more sense because in our buy sell hold today we were talking about Joni Al Hernandez, who was also part of that trade, so that's kinda why we Jheremy: Right. Yeah, sorry. Jaba: R Robbie Ray in nine games has a Padre posted a point two war on baseball reference. not even sure how we got to point two. Five two ERA, forty three innings. Would you like to guess the K to a walk? Rate ratio? Jheremy: Hold hold on, I'm hold on, I'm buying a Miguel Mendez real quick. Hold on. Hold on. I mean I an orange shimmer was just listed for thirty five dollars. Buy it now. Like, I'll take that. ask repeat the question again. This is so people can see our real time snipes as well. Jaba: Robbie Ray threw forty three innings to the tune of a five two ERA after the trade. Forty three Jheremy: Wonderful. Yep. Jaba: innings, how many kegs, how many walks? Jheremy: how old is he? Jaba: Thirty four. Jheremy: Thir and he had forty three innings, and the numbers weren't great. Jaba: Yep. Jheremy: So he had twenty one strikeouts and thirty two walks. Jaba: No, it's not that bad, but it was thirty Jheremy: No. Jaba: three Ks and twenty seven walks. I mean This is a guy who in twenty twenty Jheremy: I'm not that far off. If you inverse my numbers. Jaba: four he had twelve point six Ks per Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: nine. He just plopped up six point nine K per nine and five point seven walks per nine. Pretty good. Obviously, Jheremy: Gotta love it. Jaba: you know, it's hard to criticize the trades when it's like a D S L guy in an arm. But Jheremy: Right. Jaba: You know, if Joni Al Hernandez becomes what we think he could be, that's gonna be one of those ones that gets flamed on Twitter ten years later, even though most of the time these trades never amount to anything. But Jheremy: No no. Jaba: all right. Well, that was the AFL. We're caught up now. we will see you guys tomorrow. And yeah. Hope everyone is having a great start to their week. Talk to you guys tomorrow and go Mets. I'm not saying go Desert Dogs anymore. That's that's dead. See you guys. Jheremy: Go Segueros. Jaba: Yeah.
