Transcript
- 0:13Welcome to The 405 Payroll.
- 0:15I'm Claire Brooks, and it's Wednesday, October 7th.
- 0:19This is the lunchtime show where live Oklahoma City hiring news becomes something
- 0:23you can use before the afternoon is over.
- 0:25And I'm Miles.
- 0:26Today's headline has a date on it, which I like, because a date means you can plan.
- 0:31Monday, October 12th, 10 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon,
- 0:35the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission is running a direct hiring event at
- 0:39Oklahoma Works, 5005 North Lincoln Boulevard, Oklahoma City.
- 0:43It's open to veterans and the public.
- 0:46The commission lists skilled trades, manufacturing, construction,
- 0:50warehouse and logistics, healthcare, customer service, finance,
- 0:54and IT, with interviews available on site.
- 0:57Interviews on site.
- 0:59Claire, why is that such a big deal if you're paying rent in this town?
- 1:02Because an online application can get trapped in automated filters before a human
- 1:07reads a word.
- 1:08At a direct hire event you shake a hand, answer a few questions,
- 1:12and some employers can move you from application to interview that same morning.
- 1:16When rent is due on the first, a shorter road to the first paycheck matters.
- 1:21The commission also says there's help with job searching, resumes,
- 1:24and applications, plus connections to other workforce resources.
- 1:28So if your resume is a mess, or you don't have one yet, there's help right in the
- 1:32room.
- 1:33Now the wider picture, because it's mixed.
- 1:35The commission's August report has Oklahoma's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate
- 1:40holding steady at 4.3 percent, with 1,700 nonfarm payroll jobs added.
- 1:46That's about one tenth of one percent, so small, but it's up.
- 1:51The part that stings is that jobless rates rose from a year ago in 72 of Oklahoma's
- 1:5777 counties, and initial claims ticked up to 1,168 for the week ending September
- 2:0319th.
- 2:04So the takeaway isn't panic.
- 2:06It's that employers can be choosy right now, and that makes meeting them face to
- 2:10face worth more than another form submitted at midnight.
- 2:14And it's one morning.
- 2:16Three hours.
- 2:17Plenty of people could swing that on a lunch break or a shift swap,
- 2:21and you might not even need all three hours.
- 2:23Today we've got three OKC employers with real pay numbers, a training path toward
- 2:28twenty two to twenty eight dollars an hour, extra money you can start this week,
- 2:33and a local program that helps a raise last.
- 2:36Plus a true story and one thing to do before tonight.
- 2:40Then let's start with who's hiring.
