Transcript
- 0:00Luke and I are here today joined by Ryan Wing creator of the October ghost versus
- 0:04the league of horror which is a graphic novel currently on Kickstarter is that
- 0:08correct that is correct what can you tell us about the October
- 0:12ghost plenty I've been working with the character for a several years the
- 0:17October ghost is a my sort of homage to pulp uh action heroes combined with a
- 0:22bit of Silver age wackiness I love uh characters like the Shadow the phantom
- 0:27for that era but I also love bizarre antics like the flash would do he'd be
- 0:31running around normal day and then next you know of course there are aliens and
- 0:34robots and you know monsters that's just what you're G to have yeah right so so I
- 0:39came up with the character years back sort of counterintuitive to everything
- 0:43going really dark and gritty I like kind of whimsical to satire yeah right sort
- 0:49of Flavor of the tick tied to it and so but was it now six years ago I think
- 0:54yeah yeah 2010 I did my first initial little serial strip with the October
- 0:59ghost and and I've been doing small you know one page to eight page stories in
- 1:04different periodicals I've done and hitting the point where I just wanted to
- 1:08do a full-on graphic novel with the character and get a full story build out
- 1:12the rest of the world yeah awesome so you've I've seen uh you've got uh so
- 1:17it's kind of more um short form stuff you've done with him in the past is that
- 1:20right like correct that is correct yeah so the it's up on your website
- 1:24unexpected press.com you've got um yep a bunch of the stuff all the pages I've
- 1:29done are are sit up there if anyone wants to go take a look every page I've
- 1:32put out so far is is right on the site yeah they're really what you said like
- 1:36it REM sort of influence from Phantom when I was looking at what you've got up
- 1:40there that's what I sort of had in my head it reminds me so much of the
- 1:42Phantom which is just awesome cuz I remember getting the news paper all the
- 1:46time yeah and you see that bits and pieces and I don't know why so it's good
- 1:52that that's actually isy influence because that's what I get out of it
- 1:55perfect I'm lining things up right then that's good to hear I say I'm also by
- 2:00the old you know Saturday morning Cal strips and everything as well so between
- 2:04the old movie Cals the cial strips kind of broken apart storytelling it's just
- 2:09enjoyable that it can jump from one thing to another without needing to
- 2:12really make sense and just embracing that yeah yeah yeah there was actually
- 2:16the the little story arc in there about
- 2:18um uh Bible Belt and and eson to yes
- 2:24really clever CU it's clever I liked it because there's a bit more going on to
- 2:28it than like it is like you know fun and Whimsical and stuff like that but it's
- 2:31also I don't know like's a bit more to it than that I liked it cheers yeah my
- 2:35friend Seth desan wrote that piece we've been collaborating for a while and he
- 2:38wanted to take his get his hands on the character and I said all right let's do
- 2:42it and he he knows the tone that I'm going for and I think he nailed it out
- 2:45of the park with that one yeah it's really cool the league of horror I mean
- 2:48I don't even want to give away any spoilers or anything like that but uh uh
- 2:52it's a good time of year to be launching that kind of story um precisely with the
- 2:57name October ghost I think I had to pick this month to launch things with a
- 3:01horror it just need to happen I you know in April or May it just seems awkward at
- 3:05that point for sure what first Drew you to to Comics like to to the format I
- 3:11guess like sure sure um again the intro was off of uh strip comics on the
- 3:16weekends you know you get the paper coming in through then I grew up in the
- 3:1980s where we were marketed everything so GI Joe Spider-Man every every licensed
- 3:24character had a cartoon and then you know first time I go to the drugstore
- 3:27I'm like well look at that there's a a whole r of him here MH and started
- 3:31picking him up at that point and and Diving headlong into him and it wasn't
- 3:35long before I you know found neighbors homes and flea markets where they had
- 3:38you know cheap torn-off cover bins of uh you know tales of the unexpected uh old
- 3:44creepy and Eerie books out there that really drew me and I've been a big
- 3:48monster fan for a long time cool even before that I had a lot of classic
- 3:52Illustrated books where i' have like Po and Dracula so in my mind learning how
- 3:56to read and having the images there were just just part of my development and
- 4:00you're in a good setting up there in in Maine for this kind of story too it ties
- 4:05up well you know sharing the homestead of Stephen King you know he grew pretty
- 4:09much uh within 20 minutes of where he grew up it's a it's it's a kind of a
- 4:13beautiful place especially this time of year to tap into that feeling which I'm
- 4:17heavily emulating in the comic especially with the color palette if
- 4:20you've been following the kickstarter at all just working the very ainal oranges
- 4:23and reds and and some pops of white that's awesome yeah we were up we
- 4:27actually went up because obviously I'm from Australia but uh I've always wanted
- 4:29to go to main so we drove up the other week and yeah it's really beautiful
- 4:32there oh nice yeah nice did you head all the way up through Northern main or just
- 4:36kind of stay the Portland uh cuz um I I'd love to like I want to see
- 4:42everything so we will but uh yeah but no it is really beautiful up there like
- 4:47completely different to you know the kind of uh you know Australia completely
- 4:52different so well you got some good things going on too I'd love to do trip
- 4:56out to Australia sometime you should there's nothing
- 5:01between point a and point B you know you know who want to go see seen at camera come
- 5:06on oh that's Luke's Hometown yeah that's where I am right now
- 5:14there's excellent yeah it's quiet and peaceful and that's how he likes it I
- 5:19love it I love it there are no people anywhere it's
- 5:22great cheers to that then so how long's the kickstarter been running now um it's
- 5:28only been going for since last Thursday and we got up to uh 83% or maybe %
- 5:34funded right off the bat I have a incredible incredible following of uh
- 5:38fans and friends from over the years I've gathered so wonderful start right
- 5:42off the bat and again this is my first Kickstarter so I've been reaching out to
- 5:45different friends like uh Joe shaly Ben Bishop and a few others to see what what
- 5:50do I got to do what I look for what are trip hazards that no one tells you about
- 5:53yeah right yeah and so I've a lot of good information about that one fun one
- 5:57I learned about is um hype ticket items I guess you could say for for Awards
- 6:02watch out for those like they're good to have because you can earn some you know
- 6:07sponsorship that way but those are also the first to have someone back out of oh
- 6:12right of course someone's like yes I love your project then you know rent
- 6:16comes around they're like ah not not not this time around kick start is rough
- 6:21like it is it is it's a there's a lot of psychology behind it and you get flooded
- 6:26the first time you launch with marketing campaign people
- 6:30yeah the whole funding like they'll spor you and it's like buying a loan from
- 6:35them to jack up your your site to make it look like you're doing well and it's
- 6:40it's uh pretty disingenuine in my opinion so I prefer I'd rather fail uh
- 6:45with people I know then go that route yeah then have fake numbers on there
- 6:49yeah precisely well you probably just got another email because your num just
- 6:53SP up one more
- 6:56excellent I just backed it uh cheers man I'm addicted to Kickstarter it's a
- 7:02problem I have but I think it's worth it I'm right with you actually I stopped
- 7:06buying regular monthly Comics I mean for being comic for a long time about wow
- 7:11pushing almost two years now and I've been only going directly through whether
- 7:16shows or Kickstarter because I love the individual's voices coming through on
- 7:19these projects versus you know major corporations you know your DC or Marvels
- 7:23and stuff I've kind of faded out of as more Dark Horse and IDW and they still
- 7:27put out great books but seeing all the unique uh perspectives the packaging the
- 7:32art that's coming out through Kickstarter there's so much more energy
- 7:35there yeah yeah sometimes you just need that fresh look not that mainstream
- 7:40approach just something different which just stands out yep precisely yeah like
- 7:44there's a lot of really creative cool stuff it's it's rough but it's also like
- 7:49incredible people can actually support you in doing what you want rather than
- 7:53having whether it's keeping it safe or keeping it commercial or whatever it is
- 7:56that the big companies want to do you don't have to do any of that it's great
- 7:59exactly and I've been doing self-publishing for for years um a
- 8:03couple friends and I had this one company called uh apnp Comics which is Amalgamated
- 8:08publishing in Pharmaceuticals just for kind of a quirky kind of spin on it and
- 8:12yeah we were just putting out our own books we started out by doing Zen
- 8:15formats and then we said you know we could probably find someone just to
- 8:18publish it just to print it and then we reached out to a couple companies and
- 8:22started printing them and it's so easy now to make your own comic right
- 8:26compared to early on even in the 90s when uh digital stuff was just starting
- 8:30to to kick off it was imposs you had to go find a printer and the costs were
- 8:34insane so you had to kind of rely on putting out to a publisher but at this
- 8:37point just go directly to a printer anywhere in the world get your stuff
- 8:41your files ready and then they send it right off to you and it looks great yeah
- 8:45yeah because and you've got things like comicy and uh and I mean even just you
- 8:50know there's a million comic book readers for like iPad and Android and
- 8:53like kind of stuff yeah like yeah so the the access to the stories is is
- 8:56ridiculously easy so I'm kind of curious on how comic shops can keep keep going I
- 9:03think they're they're writing the coiles right now of licensed properties in
- 9:07movies yeah yeah that's kind of their lifeblood so I'm kind of nervous I want
- 9:11to see more of a crossover with like an actual bookstore yeah I read a an
- 9:14interesting post on Reddit by a guy who apparently like he wouldn't give his
- 9:18name or anything obviously but he said he worked for DC because if someone was
- 9:21like why did I keep rebooting like everything why is everything issue one
- 9:25why you everything always restarting and he said well they got to now like
- 9:28there's no way to you know like No One's Gonna join or jump onto the story at
- 9:34issue 300 and something so and but they got all these films coming out and so
- 9:38they're like oh man we got to start at number one again so that like all the
- 9:42yeah people could jump on I mean every industry I guess is changing but it's
- 9:45very very apparent in the comic industry where like you said like a new movie
- 9:48comes out then all right here's the new number one of an issue and make sure the
- 9:51character looks like the actor yeah that yeah like I mean they've Rebo like
- 9:56Harley Quinn few years ago got rebooted and reboting it again I know I mean and
- 10:01it makes sense CU they want it to look like MAA Robby now but y you you got to
- 10:07sell the T-shirt so I mean it has to all line up
- 10:11y so you got some cool rewards going on here on the kickstarter to you want to
- 10:15run through those for our listeners they can hear what they what they can pick up
- 10:19I have a few of them out and about again I Tred to keep it pretty simple and
- 10:22streamline versus going too big with a lot of rewards since my first time out
- 10:26making sure I can manage anything that comes through so your basic uh digital
- 10:31download your your PDF and cbz file is H your inro reward then after that you
- 10:36work up through to the uh 96 page book that I'm putting together of the October
- 10:40GES versus the the league of horror and then from there on out it starts
- 10:44stepping up through to going to a unique print that I'll have out for this
- 10:48Kickstarter um a one-off t-shirt that I'm making for Kickstarter only I also
- 10:53Sil screen my own shirts at home so sell show so you know bust out my own designs
- 10:59currently down in my basement studio right now and that's you can see all my
- 11:02print making stuff set up so that's super unique yeah it's doing a lot of a
- 11:06DIY approach um it's pretty big um if you're over here in Portland the Indie
- 11:10art scene is pretty massive so it's easy to access any materials you need so cool
- 11:16and and I appreciate that approach so I run with those then one new piece I'm
- 11:21doing is usually I don't sell off comic pages but for this book I'm GNA I have
- 11:26the list of you know get the book and also get a page of Art from the book in
- 11:30Order of you know whoever bids first you know gets first pick after I finish
- 11:33everything I'll end up sending out a PDF and they can choose which page they want
- 11:36and I'll sign it on and original yep the original artwork wow and I work and I
- 11:41work for um for paper and pencil and ink right at the work desk I end up doing
- 11:46colors digitally yeah but everything else I do I do right by hand okay I was
- 11:50gonna ask that so you don't do any digital stuff well I mean it becomes
- 11:53digital at some point yep yep scan in and I do color at that point but uh all
- 11:57the rest of it's the traditional approach even lettering I do I am
- 12:01working by hand one of my good friends Rick Parker who did lettering for comics
- 12:05for ages at Marvel one day I said all right I need to learn how to do this and
- 12:10he sent me endless information on how to start learning how to use an AMS guide
- 12:14rulers how to file down your your quill nib to do inking on the letters oh wow
- 12:19it's a it's sort of a neat tradition that I would like to learn how to do and
- 12:23it has a a fun feel to it as well where you can tell that it's the person's
- 12:28Personalities in the letters yeah so I'm working on still honing it now make it
- 12:32more legible as I keep working along but it's it's going great that's awesome
- 12:35like again uh kind of unique those those are the basic rewards we have in place I
- 12:40did end up putting up the other day uh my wife makes this sweet little crossstitch October
- 12:46ghost out so we said all right we'll do a few of those as well because those end
- 12:49up selling decent at shows too so put those together and then also added a a
- 12:53bundle pack of books just saying hey you know what I've got piles of my older
- 12:58issues all together there so group those up and one of them does have the like Z
- 13:03first appearance of October ghost in it which I think I only have two copies of
- 13:06I know of around so I said you know what that'd be fun to put out too so that's
- 13:08one of my the higher end ones but the rest is all manageable the commission
- 13:12tier doing great cool it's it's a wonderful first experience I got to say
- 13:17for for Kickstarter for me I think it's having the foundation of lots of
- 13:21questions asked yeah other people who've done it really helped really really
- 13:25helped have you got any shows or anything coming up like uh appearances
- 13:30um actually um not sure when this stes but this coming weekend the 28th 29th up
- 13:35in Bangor main is the Bangor horror festival oh yeah oh cool right incred
- 13:41Tony Todd's gonna be there um is it who else G be the car from Christine and
- 13:47most of the cast is going to be there oh my God it's a sweet sweet show um and
- 13:52it's uh it's the second year in a row it's been going and they really ramped
- 13:56it for this year and or I wasn't sure I was going to make it but uh things
- 13:59worked out so with first night's a a drink and draw on Friday night and then
- 14:03a full day of just awesome horror and comics in the center in the town of
- 14:07Stephen King so you can't ask for much more than that this time of year get all
- 14:12the cool stuff I have to see if I can drive back up I didn't know I didn't
- 14:15know about that that's awesome oh yeah yeah yeah definitely check out the site
- 14:19um I'll shoot some links on my site too Chris McMillan this guy runs a show
- 14:23trust him completely I've been some shows where it's been kind of shady his
- 14:26heart and energies are all focused on every show he does and really tries to
- 14:31make it work for anyone who attends it's incredible show awesome that sounds
- 14:35really so I'll be there uh pushing my Wares really pumping the kickstarter
- 14:39probably doing a lot of commissions is a big Focus I'll be there all day on
- 14:42Saturday and then um then back back to the Grind after
- 14:47that what do you guys get into what's your what's your big thing right now see
- 14:52my big thing right now is all my stuff's arriving
- 14:56um so uh yeah I haven't had a lot of free
- 15:01time yeah precisely again with my one-month old it's uh I'm working in
- 15:07unique hours where I'll um be up at you know 2 in the morning 3 in the morning
- 15:12uh finally get him back to bed after a bit work for an hour hour and a half on
- 15:16the project and yeah wow then my four and a halfy old gets up get him to
- 15:19school and I've come with a lot of really great creative ways to work on on
- 15:23this project so one day I have a full day to do something it'll blow my mind
- 15:28I'll get so much done it'll be amazing or you end up getting nothing done
- 15:32because you've got so much time you just put it off for that couple of minutes
- 15:34and turns into hours I do it now when I can procrastinate to do it later it'll be
- 15:41amazing y but again getting very excited again for the Halloween season um you
- 15:45guys have any classic go-to horror movies you jump into this time of year
- 15:49well we just did uh we my my wife and I do a podcast called necronom when we
- 15:53talk about uh horror movies we just did pumpkin head because we wanted to talk
- 15:58about um cuz so much Tradition at Halloween like I I mean it's such an
- 16:03underrated film I mean in the in the horror Community like I mean you can
- 16:07recognize it but it's a great film yeah it's got I mean if anything come on yeah
- 16:13I think the weakest parts of it are the horror Parts but it's got all this other
- 16:17stuff going on that makes it really interesting I think it has that folksy
- 16:21mythology tied to it all that's just brilliant exactly yeah and because we
- 16:25were talking about I mean Halloween here compared to Australia uh in the last I
- 16:30don't know like 5 years people kind of do Halloween in Australia and you can
- 16:34you can kind of find pumpkins to carve but you got to get in quick there's like
- 16:3810 of them at the grocery store and then they're gone and then they they they rot
- 16:42almost instantly because it's the time so it's it's not the same and this is my
- 16:46first one here and already I mean it's it's what like it's kind of late October
- 16:50now but but it's just it's way cooler like it's it's just way more of a thing
- 16:55here obviously oh yeah like it's a super cool time of year I'm pretty excited for
- 17:00for actual Halloween you know like the 31st yeah it's always fun to go through
- 17:04the uh the catalog of what what movies you haven't seen for a while and I grew
- 17:08up on you know Saturday afternoon and late night movies of Universal horror and Hammer
- 17:14stuff my goto Creature from the Black Lagoon um one of the best makeups ever
- 17:19is yeah I don't know why we watched it like fairly recently and uh it's I mean
- 17:25I think it holds up I'm I'm I'd be interested to to show it to someone
- 17:29who's never seen it before to see what they think cuz I'm I'm I'm kind of
- 17:33biased with a lot of those things I think a lot of those movies hold up when
- 17:36maybe they don't I don't know yeah precisely I'm the same way too like the
- 17:40the enjoyment of a kid I remember the first time I saw the creature of the
- 17:43Black Lagoon was on like you know a standard CBS channel on Saturday
- 17:48afternoon and they were like Leonard Molton introduced it and they were
- 17:50talking about how it was recorded in 3D and he said all right everyone get you
- 17:55know behind your aquarium to watch this movie I assisted my grandmother got like
- 17:59several glasses and filled them with water to put in front of me so I watched
- 18:02most of it through those glasses that's awesome yeah I bought in quick they
- 18:08didn't have to do much to to capture my attention yeah oh they did a lot of
- 18:11crazy stuff oh yeah with the horror movies in the old days like the Shocker
- 18:15where they had the Shocker with Vincent Price with the they had they Zapped The
- 18:18Tingler oh The Tingler was it The Tingler yeah yeah they Zapped people in
- 18:22the chairs I know and uh yeah and then
- 18:27uh house Hill they had like the skeletons and skeleton drop down through
- 18:32yeah brilliant stuff I love those theatrics I me William Castle he he own
- 18:36those I he how to make a show not always was a great movie but a really good show
- 18:41yeah right I wish they still did stuff like that yeah I'm curious I've heard a
- 18:45couple things where they're talking about doing the more immersive type of
- 18:48movies you know like you go to like Universal Studios and you do the rides
- 18:51where you pretty much sit there and you get shifted and thrown around and air is
- 18:54blown on you and everything yeah um just to get people going back the theater 3DS
- 19:00kind made it comeback again too but I think they need one more one more piece
- 19:04to kind of Pull It in smell Vision
- 19:08smell smell let it all see through the vents and actually I heard that from the
- 19:15Universal Studios um horror horror
- 19:18nights they did the was the Halloween 2 that they did was it this year or was it
- 19:24I think it's this year where they did that it's the immersive maze you go
- 19:27through you get to see Michael Myers R round as the
- 19:31hospital oh yeah you're walking through the giant skull car pumpkin at the
- 19:36beginning and they pump in pumpkin smell through the whole thing so sense has
- 19:39become a big piece of that huh that's really cool actually which just sounds
- 19:42amazing like I love to walk the giant skull pumpkin with with the smell of it
- 19:46SC through that but that's I'd love to see theaters you know of course it be
- 19:51like one per state would ever have something like that but it would be be
- 19:53fun to see that's it I'm I'm coming to America next Halloween you should man
- 19:58you got I mean seriously we're going to um the Bangor Fest it'll be great we're
- 20:03going to Six Flags this weekend I think uh because they have like a a Halloween
- 20:09th event there's there's some in if you go up to uh the go Coast Luke uh to like
- 20:15Movie World in the go it's kind of like I guess the Australian equivalent of Six
- 20:19Flags it's Warner Brothers and they do uh and in the last over the last few
- 20:23years they do Fright Nights which is like uh I guess you guys like here they
- 20:28they have them every year you know the mazes and stuff that they do at
- 20:30Halloween like the the kind of haunted house mazes we don't really have them
- 20:35here yet no they're slowly starting to take off in Australia but yeah but if
- 20:39you head up to uh up to Movie World cuz Halloween's not that big here no people
- 20:44try to bring it in every now and again and it just it just flounders when I was
- 20:48a kid when I was a kid I I loved the idea of it because we would see it on TV
- 20:52right uh cuz we're exposed to you know all the same films and everything things
- 20:56everything else and I was like man Halloween looks awesome and then so I
- 21:00would dress up and I'd go door to door cuz I I grew up in a little town in
- 21:03Western Sydney a little town it's not a little town anymore it was when I was a
- 21:08kid people who live in penth are like little town I'm like no it was when I
- 21:13was a kid um and yeah we would go knocking door to door and and then
- 21:18people would be like um that's an American tradition go away and yeah like
- 21:24brutal ouch yeah no no candy no candy would it even hum you would or it's just
- 21:29no go away yeah no no child be
- 21:33gone and and your costume sucks well
- 21:37that's true it did suck one year it was a paper bag with the word robot written
- 21:42on the front pathetic no I went as I I remember I went as the Terminator one
- 21:47year I just like put on some sunglasses sunglasses I'm the
- 21:53Terminator give me candy yeah but I mean I knew that it
- 21:58wasn't worth going to too much effort it wasn't be appreciated but no it's it's
- 22:02more and more uh you know from what I've from what I've seen over the last few
- 22:07years like I said I'm not a kid anymore but I mean kids trick- or treat over
- 22:10there now and um people try and get into it but again a lot of the stuff that's
- 22:15that's kind of uh iconic doesn't really work in Australia because it's it's not
- 22:21cold and it's uh yeah it's completely different climate and you can't get
- 22:25pumpkins carving pumpkins exactly so so why bother have it just cancel
- 22:30it what are you watching this Halloween Luke I haven't actually thought about it
- 22:36here's your chance y um see I might actually go back and
- 22:41watch Evil Dead oh yeah i' be watching Ash versus evil dead that's so good
- 22:46actually go lot ofun I don't know if I should try and show my wife it though
- 22:50she doesn't do well with horror i' my one experience watching a horror film
- 22:55with her leads me to believe you should not show her as is Evil
- 23:01Dead one of my first dates with my my wife was to see 30 Days of Night in the
- 23:06theater oh wow I did I didn't know she was terrified of horror movies right
- 23:12because I know I grew up I remember like age five watching The Exorcist and
- 23:15everything I just I grew up watching you know back toback the shining then Pete's
- 23:19Dragon oh yeah without without skipping a beat you know yeah that's so the first
- 23:23day yeah so the first day we go to one of the first days we go to a see 30 Days
- 23:27of Night you know I'm like a sweet Nile's temples Smith up on screen
- 23:31brilliant watching it about halfway through the movie she goes I I have to
- 23:35go home and walk my dog so kind of that point I said Okay I
- 23:41I I I see where the gauge is here yeah dial it back understand yeah and and
- 23:46those vampires in 30 Days of Night are wonderful I mean they're pretty much
- 23:49just human sharks yeah yeah know I like that about it it had a different style
- 23:54they're like but they yeah they they're very um intense like
- 23:59that the movie I think uh is I guess underrated I like it the movie I enjoy
- 24:05it I do it's it's it's not as I think the ending kind of kind of wobbles but
- 24:09the rest of it is is very tight yeah like visually there's some like awesome
- 24:12stuff like the the shots you know over the over the village or the town kind of
- 24:16thing that sequence with the vampires like killing everyone yeah it's got some
- 24:20cool stuff in it definitely so you had the same kind of childhood upbringing
- 24:23where I remember renting on laser disc you know I'd get um search for spot and
- 24:28then Halloween 2 yeah right and that's kind of how it went or yeah Place
- 24:34amville horror coupled with Willie Wonka
- 24:38yeah Labyrinth was a go-to for me um
- 24:42plus Evil Dead and uh I actually when I where I grew up I had a good friend up
- 24:48the road obviously uh and you know as you do when you're a kid your friends
- 24:51all live in your neighborhood and um exactly get you on your bike you're yeah
- 24:56and so I took uh my copy of Labyrinth that ID rented um on VHS and then a copy
- 25:02of Evil Dead that I rented on on VHS left them up there by mistake and his
- 25:07younger brother ended up watch like putting Evil Dead
- 25:10on and his mother walked in and uh so the next time I came around she said do
- 25:17not bring around any videos ever
- 25:21again I was like oh all right then fine fine
- 25:27banned but yeah Evil Dead is one of my favorites actually that's why I'm glad
- 25:31Ash versus evil dead is is happening and it is so good although man this season
- 25:36it's gotten crazy I can't believe they're yeah well I say allowed but I'm
- 25:40yeah been given the money to make this show yeah I was curious if they'd make
- 25:43it to a the second season because you know how these shows go if they do it
- 25:46really right then someone has to step in and try to make it better in quotation
- 25:51marks and usually messes it up so yeah it's it's brilliant it seemed like the
- 25:56the way they ended season one was kind of like uh we might get canceled we
- 25:59don't know if we're getting any more money for this yeah one foot out the
- 26:03door just in case you yeah yeah kind of like because then you I mean one of my
- 26:07favorite shows of all time that ended in my opinion poorly was um Carnaval have
- 26:13you ever seen that I was gonna say yes I'm right with you that was that was
- 26:18painful yeah and not only that because apparently they they shot oh no they
- 26:23scripted uh an ending that would be an ending and then you know so they got
- 26:28cancel they could shoot that and then it would be like all right it's finished
- 26:31but then they would told no no no it's fine you know picked up for another
- 26:34season shot this ending and then it was like nah actually you are cancelled it's
- 26:39the worst when that happens and so but oh God that show is so good and then but
- 26:44yes apparently he wrote six uh outlines for six novels uh really yeah the the
- 26:50guy continuing on the story yeah but uh
- 26:54you know the rights are with uh HBO HBO yeah and so apparently he can't do
- 27:00anything with it right now come on I do anything just let it go
- 27:06Kickstarter exactly yeah interesting time for
- 27:12television as well with HBO and westwell westwell is really good too yeah no I
- 27:16mean all the shows are coming out to have you uh have you seen the new
- 27:18Exorcist series it's out no I've heard about it I've heard it's really good oh
- 27:22my God yes heard about it sh shocking you hear like oh Fox is gonna be putting
- 27:27out the Exorcist you're like all right let's they're probably going to rehash
- 27:30the movie and it it moves right past the movie it references it a bit here and
- 27:34there but it's its own thing it oh my God it is intense really it's it's a
- 27:38great great show yeah I'll have to see if we have very impressed by whatever
- 27:42the TV thing we have here is and I'll try to work out how to get it in
- 27:47Australia well I know how you can get it Luke but I'm not going to say it on the show
- 27:54theyby sadly it's the the only way to get a bunch of things in they often say
- 27:58like Australia's Got the highest um numbers for piracy and all that kind of
- 28:02thing there's a reason for it like don't judge us we want to watch it we want to
- 28:06watch stuff too say if gets released there you'll gladly do it but no nothing
- 28:10no we often said that on the show like if you make things available in
- 28:13Australia people will probably buy them yep take my money here it is my money is
- 28:19sitting on the table please take it what's that no region locked to the
- 28:23United States all right I guess I'll okay I guess I'll obtain it by of farious
- 28:29means into my own hands yeah no it sucks though because the other thing I mean
- 28:34eventually and then yeah we do get them on DVD and stuff eventually but um by
- 28:37that time you know everyone's already spoiled for G no one's talking about it
- 28:43the show's been cancelled at that point four seasons in you're like oh great
- 28:46yeah the same things that make the shows so kind of intense and you know like and
- 28:51interesting for people ruin it for Australians if they can't see
- 28:55it I noticed It's the weird trend with um like every show they do it but they
- 29:02they live tweet spoilers kind of as the show is on and I'm like oh man like I I
- 29:08get why because it's it's huge for marketing and stuff like walking dead
- 29:11did it the other day like yeah uh and I noticed Marvel tweets Agents of Shield
- 29:17and they'll just post like like it's a it's a spoiler it's a huge spoiler if
- 29:20you seen yeah so like it's like one step away of just like copying and pasting
- 29:25the script as they go along yeah exactly it's tense I I I I know why they do it
- 29:29it's the same reason they keep rebooting the comics it's because they trying to
- 29:32keep people try to pull people in yeah get ratings and in sales keep going for
- 29:36for commercials but uh yeah know it's hard I've had so many friends you know
- 29:40especially Walking Dead is obviously probably the biggest
- 29:43example every time I see a new episode come out I I see my friends going okay
- 29:47I've unfriended you know 20 people due to them spoiling stuff yeah rolling
- 29:51through things like how hard is it to be like you know what just watch you know
- 29:55by the time this next episode comes around we'll talk about it a week
- 29:58it's not life or death no one's life is that that crucial
- 30:02you get that out there kind of scares me off social media whenever something I
- 30:07want to watch is like Game of Thrones is a big is a good example I think that's
- 30:10one yes exactly especially that was that was a big one where they were saying oh
- 30:14you know we Australia leads the world and piracy it's like what it's not
- 30:17available and you guys keep ruining it so and I don't want any spoilers in Game
- 30:23of Thrones I'm going to watch season 2 one day see I we gave
- 30:28uh cuz like I mean again I'm not condoning piracy it sucks but but like
- 30:34if you want to participate in that kind of cultural phenomenon like yeah you're
- 30:39GNA have to cut available for everyone yeah we're all taking sips of
- 30:44everything I pounded a little more coffee some bottles dropping I haven't
- 30:47had any coffee yet actually I should do that yeah I'm the one probably with the
- 30:53bottles yeah you drinking gin it's late at night I'm allowed to exactly
- 30:59yeah that's one of the weird uh things that happens on on our show normally now
- 31:03is either one or two of us are drinking coffee and the other ones drinking you
- 31:07know like a cocktail or something no matter what time of day it is it's
- 31:11always me drinking the cocktail yeah Fair Point you drinking gin I assume yes
- 31:17yeah gin good yeah we talked a little bit about
- 31:23Kickstarter are there what's some some of your favorite Kickstarter is there
- 31:26anything running right now that you've got your eye on
- 31:28um um the big one I'm pushing again is my friend Joe had on this is horor
- 31:32Babylon he just got funded last night I saw that just hit the 100% Mark and I so
- 31:38excited for him because he's uh was sweating it near the end and you got
- 31:41three days left to go and and a long long ways to hit that point yeah kind of
- 31:45relaxed now and uh and kind of ride it out yeah he could sleep at night and
- 31:51then start pushing a little bit more for that so that one's really exciting um my
- 31:54friends uh Sean French launches
- 31:58book this next week on Kickstarter which is escape from Jesus Island oh wow
- 32:04that's be out there which is a really fun uh it's a collection of the issues
- 32:07they put out so it's um little graphic novel wonderful bizarre Horror Story of
- 32:13uh people trying to clone Jesus and the Fallout of that
- 32:18happening more these specific zombie horrific mon all right you have my
- 32:22intention fall out of what happens yeah yeah I think I might have to keep an eye
- 32:26out for that next week they're launching that yes next week I apologize I have
- 32:29the date in front of me but we right one of those things where I there's a small
- 32:33crew of us here in Maine who are support each other and work our books and we
- 32:37just happen to have like almost like lined up back to back to back
- 32:40Kickstarter so we're like all right we're all pushing each other for this I
- 32:43was gonna say it seems like you have a really good Community up there like uh
- 32:46we have a great Community here yeah yeah like uh horror comics like specifically
- 32:52precisely that's awesome that's it's you know it's what we do best so it gets
- 32:57dark winter time here you know there's not much to do so you that's true gr go
- 33:01with it yeah it's it gets a lot colder outside here than it does in Australia
- 33:05like uh I can see why people like cuz someone say oh yeah you actually just
- 33:09kind of get trapped in doors for like month at a time like what pretty cold
- 33:14and dark yeah cold dark tons of snow for a while so oppressing to see that much
- 33:20white you're like oh oh God I'm excited about it for nowes hit that point
- 33:25eventually I'll learn to hate it I think but for now yeah event in time in due
- 33:29time better than the um I mean I don't know I don't know how doe Fahrenheit
- 33:33better than I prefer that to the um the 40 degree days in uh in Sydney in summer so
- 33:40what's that in Fahrenheit 40 yeah it's high
- 33:4490s yeah right yeah it gets warm very
- 33:50warm here it gets cold but no we U have a really great crew of um you know Indie
- 33:56comic makers in Main in Portland area but all the way up through to Bangor too
- 34:00so there's probably a good you know 10 of us that Circle shows with each other
- 34:04and uh we've done our own little drink and draws in town every now and then or
- 34:08just go out and get wings together oh cool stay stay a breast of things you
- 34:12know yeah talk you know the the actual importance of Fright Night 2 random
- 34:17stuff like that that's kind of important to us you know to really debate and get
- 34:20into that's awesome and work with that and there's actually a lot of Veteran
- 34:25artists U and True commercial artists that are in here for uh for comic books
- 34:29uh lee weeks who did Daredevil for a run um J Jo stuff friend Rick Parker who
- 34:35said did lettering for for Spider-Man you know the classic Spider-Man number
- 34:39one with McFarland he did all the lettering and all the spiders and all
- 34:42that so oh cool oh wow it's really Happ up there yeah it it was the editor for
- 34:47crack magazine for years um this illustration for a Charlton this Neo
- 34:52Charlton that's out now he lives in this town like it's this tons more scattered
- 34:56throughout here so this good uh rubbing
- 34:58of elbows of actual sort of I'd say
- 35:04celebs and the blue collar workers on this end so yeah right it's a really
- 35:10good C to people who who who like the
- 35:15craft yeah so you uh are you a a physical
- 35:20comic guy or you a digital comic guy do you have a do you have a preference a
- 35:25stance an opinion uh I do both so I'm good with either sometimes it's
- 35:30availability digital is the best way to go at it yeah um but at the same time
- 35:35you know I'm raised in in actual books so i' I'm leaning more towards really
- 35:40nice what high-end collections is what I prefer like like the Hellboy Library
- 35:45editions those like dream books if everything could come out that way
- 35:48that'd be perfect the hot cover ones yeah yeah like this fabric black cloth
- 35:53gorgeous slightly oversized print I mean yeah meola's work just shin and all of
- 35:58those dug for Gros so at that point that's where I where I go to plus a lot of the books
- 36:04I'm backing on Kickstarter they're all standard OG's and they end up becoming
- 36:09you know hard covers on their own and yeah just seeing the different book
- 36:12design that comes out so I'm a I have a you know Fine Arts degree and that's
- 36:15where my passion kind of Lies is is seeing like really well-crafted book
- 36:19design yeah you appreciate that aspect of it nice spot varnish you know some
- 36:23different highlights you know the different weight papers like I am I am a
- 36:25big enough nerd to really enjoy that stuff so yeah that's the one thing
- 36:29digital can't do but if if it's not going to be made that way just go
- 36:33digital then I'm fine with that so you wouldn't you wouldn't not into like you
- 36:37know like a single issue kind of I I used to be but it's been so long since
- 36:42because of the restarting stuff the only things I was still buying um issues for
- 36:46which end up stopping was you know Hellboy because well Hellboy and Hell
- 36:49stops vprd picking up that's been forever and then anything else I would
- 36:54get would start and stop and start and stop so just got frustrated
- 36:58rating yeah of like I'm not going to keep seeing another team again reboot
- 37:01reboot so I kind of lost heart in that and just picked up older collections I
- 37:04mean I love the um the was the DC put out the um showcase collections all the
- 37:10black and white books oh okay which is like like 300 to 500 pages of black and
- 37:15white reprints of phantom stranger House of Secrets haunted tank Doom Patrol like
- 37:21weird weird bizarre stuff that usually doesn't get much love right and those I
- 37:25love going through because you get to see like artists like Alfredo
- 37:29alala Line work in the inks just pops so there's no you know poorly printed
- 37:34colors laying on top of it yeah right so I I go all over the place book so I go
- 37:38really sort of those are kind of cheap end kind of pieces but you get to see
- 37:42raw black and white art to all the way to the high end like I said the Hellboy
- 37:45Library editions are just gorgeous yeah yeah and expensive yeah this is true yeah it's
- 37:52the uh yeah it's like running out and getting those at the comic store every
- 37:55week it's the okay it's my birthday what we oh and uh Sandman has has uh big hard
- 38:01cover ones like that too I think yeah actually I have looking across my show I
- 38:05have the absolute editions for the sandman's yeah right um shelf gorgeous I
- 38:10mean just for the artwork on that too yeah be able to see on the the oversized
- 38:14print is brilliant is there a is this is a classic comic series that people might
- 38:21not have heard of that you would recommend to our
- 38:23listeners um well I'd say less um the I'd say the person I'm into right now so
- 38:30it's not it's Comics but it's not like an older series is Richard Salah um I
- 38:35don't know if you remember him I got into him back in you know the 90s with
- 38:39MTV head uh liquid television and he did a segment called 13 o'l okay uh it's
- 38:45very uh it's very monster esque um sort of Kit it has like axe murderers but
- 38:52it's always has some female lead character who uh sort of like a Wai
- 38:57heroine who's always taking out vampires and just weird s Cults and just bizarre
- 39:04pulp kind of Adventures I'd say tied to it yeah so his work is someone I would
- 39:08really push uh out there and he's been doing that like I said since the 90s but
- 39:14is not a really popular person he works with uh first second press puts out
- 39:18books with them and does a lot of self-published pieces but absolutely
- 39:22incredible but if I were to dive back to look at older stuff I mean I'm I'm
- 39:27always again a fan of like House of Secrets and House of mystery just
- 39:30because you get those classic bizarre twist Oh Henry endings but they really
- 39:34turn a lot of incredible artists through there so they're always worth worthly
- 39:38skimming through all right cool I guess where can people find more about you and
- 39:44your work in general sure um head over to unexpected press.com and in there
- 39:50you'll find links to everywhere I am Instagram Twitter Facebook uh blogging
- 39:55every go they keep coming up with new social medias every 12 months
- 39:59so I come on a h gosh L there's is everything I was dive in and kind of
- 40:06play around with each one to see what it has to offer yeah so I'm on most of them
- 40:10actively that's a different question yeah we're the
- 40:15same eventually comes down to like okay your Facebook Twitter and Instagram's
- 40:19you know leading the yeah leading the battle right now but yeah unexpected
- 40:24press.com head there there's a link to the kickstarter for the October goes
- 40:27versus the league of horror and I'd love you to come take a look and feel free to
- 40:30email me with any questions anyone has yeah do I have to be about this or i'
- 40:36take question we're talking about craft Brews we're talking Halloween
- 40:40decorations making your own plaster masks wherever you got to go it's fine basic
- 40:46Plumbing I have a question we actually went to some we went to some breweries
- 40:51uh up there we went to Allagash and to Foundation uh oh Foundation great y yeah
- 40:57actually I like the the foundation uh a lot uh what's a beer I should try CU we
- 41:03we're we're my wife and I super into craft beers we had like a lot of friends
- 41:07in the industry in Sydney and now we're here and we're like come on we need to
- 41:10get back into this well one of the larger craft beers I I'm a huge fan of
- 41:15that I always dive into it's not from Portland Maine but Portland Oregon is
- 41:19Rogue okay oh right I think one of those they make actually they put out a
- 41:25Hellboy Red Ale for celebration of uh his birthday because you know mola is
- 41:29over in Oregon as well too but yeah Rogue Brewing they do uh phenomenal Bru
- 41:35they have a Dead Guy Ale that's delicious they have a is that the one
- 41:37with little the little skeleton guy they're the dead looking guy yep yep yep
- 41:42that's that's a glowin the dark label on it too so it's kind of fun to have a few
- 41:45of them lined up at night so yeah yeah we used to do a thing called uh a friend
- 41:49of ours ran a thing called Beer Club um yeah once a month and he would get all
- 41:54the craft Brewers in in cityne or if anywhere in Australia and they would
- 41:57come along and you would pay 20 bucks and come in and they would just bring
- 42:01all of their new stuff and and you just drink beer and talked beer and got drunk
- 42:07it was amazing so no we're really fortunate um
- 42:12in the Portland area specifically it seems like a new Brer opens up about
- 42:16every six months yeah so it's non-stop like Oxbo um other guys been around for a
- 42:23while shipyard's been around for a while oh yeah Shipyard we went to as well yeah
- 42:26yeah that's great stuff in the town where I'm from about an hour north of uh
- 42:30Portland is Norway Brewing Company they just open up and are making some great
- 42:34uh alses there too so it's every pretty much again it's it's main it gets winter
- 42:38time what are you gonna do you know just make some beer let open a brewery at
- 42:42this point yeah maybe I'll open one EXA you just end up doing you don't mean to
- 42:47like it's like me you end up growing a beard and brewing beer that's
- 42:51it I have a beard already I guess this is des halfway there halfway there
- 42:58cool oh great oh yeah we we'll share links to uh to all of this for everybody
- 43:04um and we'll try we'll get this up as soon as possible because um you know we
- 43:08want to make sure we can direct people as much traffic to the kickstarter as
- 43:12possible yeah yeah push people up to the Bangor Fest up in Bangor main it's it's
- 43:17gonna be a wonderful show everyone should hit up come by say hi to me I'll
- 43:20be hanging at the table and uh eager to meet everyone cool there's so many so
- 43:25many good like cons here there there are a lot of great shows and again this
- 43:29one's sort of the halfway show between the larger Bangor show that happens um
- 43:33and know the Bangor comic toy convention and again a lot of uh horror people and
- 43:38uh other sort of media guests come through that as well it's always
- 43:42surprising who makes it up through here I was kind of shocked again Tony Todd
- 43:45this weekend Tony Todd that's yeah we got because we're in
- 43:50we're in Rhode Island we got Rhode Island ComiCon coming up and actually
- 43:53there's that's right some good guests at that too Stan Lee's going to be there
- 43:56and um and but like Galo and Kate be and and all these
- 44:01like big celebrities like like oh man this stuff Rhode Island H yeah yeah
- 44:07because we had we had uh two conventions in Sydney uh well we had none when I was
- 44:12growing up and then and then we would have kind of the occasional um comic toy
- 44:18and stamp collecting fair I know you and then so how that
- 44:24like a legion hall or a large gym exactly so we had those and then uh and
- 44:29then there was they started Supernova which was like an attempt to kind of do
- 44:34the ComiCon kind of you know like larger convention in Sydney and they would get
- 44:39when it first started out it was it was pretty pretty good because it was big
- 44:41but they would get like like two people like and it was like the celebrities you
- 44:46were like ah I guess I want to see them
- 44:50like uh but now now we have uh what this like uh we've got Oz Comicon uh we've
- 44:57got Supernova still we've got um uh Pax H we even have a px now yeah we have PX
- 45:04at down in Melbourne uh it's it's getting better and it's kind of cool now
- 45:08because because there's so few of them what they do is they try and get all of
- 45:12the celebrities at once kind of thing yeah exactly I mean just the flight to
- 45:16get out there I mean you pull everyone in yeah so in a way is because over here
- 45:21you've got like a lot of lot of conventions and then it works out fine
- 45:24cuz there's so many you know most of the celebrities or people leave here anyway
- 45:28and and they're around but it works out well in Sydney cuz like they get they
- 45:31get them all at one time because they just book them all for the one period oh
- 45:35and wrestling what is it with wrestling and all this stuff what we have actually
- 45:38up at this show too wrestling always gets brought in what wrestling I mean I
- 45:43I mean wrestling's fine but I like what is the link there it's always a surprise
- 45:47but there always is because even at this Bangor show there's a Jake the Snake
