- 0:04had to pick something up because it was going
- 0:06to drive me crazy. So listen, what you're looking
- 0:10at right now is a post on Facebook that I just
- 0:15opened after recording two podcast episodes.
- 0:19One for my podcast, itastelikemagic .com and
- 0:25the other for my podcast, Fool Around and Find
- 0:29Out with Cece or Courtney. And they both had
- 0:35a theme about timing, karma, and dharma. And
- 0:41after I uploaded them, I need to go in and write
- 0:47the description now or whatever. I opened this.
- 0:50I opened actually, I opened Facebook and this
- 0:53is the first post that I saw. I don't even follow
- 0:56them, but the theme is definitely theming. Because
- 1:00in the first... podcast that I wrote about I
- 1:04recorded this morning it's talking about how
- 1:07we can empty and fill our pots you know doing
- 1:15quote unquote good and bad and what we can do
- 1:17with that energy but also how people will sometimes
- 1:20try to sabotage us how people will sometimes
- 1:26try to teach someone a lesson because they feel
- 1:32like it's their duty. I don't know. But yesterday
- 1:36I was actually going to record and I decided
- 1:39not to. And what I wanted to talk about was how
- 1:44angry I get when people think they know me. And
- 1:51I'm saying that from the perspective of being
- 1:54an American, being a Black American, knowing
- 1:58that I will Pretty much, and not just me. We
- 2:05have an understanding. We, as in Black, foreigners,
- 2:08immigrants, expats, or whatever, have an understanding
- 2:11that specifically here in Brazil, where many
- 2:15people who would identify as Black will still
- 2:18identify as Brazilian first. So we're always
- 2:21going to be a foreigner or a gringa. And there's
- 2:23this assumption that I... fit the stereotype
- 2:28of what people think about when they think about
- 2:30Americans and they don't know anything about
- 2:32me and how because of that there have also often
- 2:37been times when people have attempted to interrupt
- 2:45the plans that when people attempt to interrupt
- 2:51things that I would like to do here that I have
- 2:55here in Brazil. Bahia, Brazil. Same things that
- 3:01I have always done in the United States. I have
- 3:04spent the majority of my adult life planning,
- 3:11organizing, volunteering for many different causes.
- 3:17Everything from housing to unhoused homeless
- 3:22people, housing rights, tenant rights. domestic
- 3:26violence type of thing and like disaster relief
- 3:29and not even just with organizations right when
- 3:33I am renovating something a house or whatever
- 3:37I am always hiring I will go to like what we
- 3:42call transitional homes or halfway houses to
- 3:45hire people who would not normally get an opportunity
- 3:54People have this assumption that I am and people
- 3:58don't realize that I have also been unhoused,
- 4:02meaning homeless by choice because I'm very stubborn
- 4:06and I refuse to allow someone to try to humble
- 4:11me to ensure having a roof or something over
- 4:18my head. Love being dirty. I love being outdoors.
- 4:25I love working with the underdogs. I love certain
- 4:29things that most Brazilians specifically don't
- 4:36think that Americans get involved in, right?
- 4:40I have lived in homes that had no running water,
- 4:43no electricity, no heating or air conditioning.
- 4:49I have lived in very similar environments that
- 4:54many would deem poor, poverty, the hood, favelas,
- 5:00or whatever. And I'm not saying that as an insult.
- 5:04I'm giving you some context because knowing who
- 5:08I am and knowing the things that I have done
- 5:11and knowing the people that I have helped and
- 5:15continue to help in the background. To still
- 5:20come across people who try to slow me down, play
- 5:24stupid, childish, immature games, thinking that
- 5:29they're good con artists when at best they are
- 5:34petty scammers who don't realize that sometimes
- 5:39us as foreigners know what someone is doing,
- 5:43but it's just not worth our time or energy. always
- 5:48call someone out on their ways where they're
- 5:54moving and acting without any integrity. It becomes
- 6:00very frustrating at some point also because they
- 6:06are interrupting our ability to help the people
- 6:09who actually fucking deserve it. So back to...
- 6:14Everything I'm saying right now has to do with
- 6:17this post. What I find very sad about humanity
- 6:22is the fact that there are a lot of people who
- 6:28have never had anyone be kind to them. So when
- 6:33someone is kind to them, they think that they
- 6:38are special. So then they become very arrogant.
- 6:43They become very entitled. They can become very
- 6:46self -sabotaging. And I am not saying that to
- 6:56shame the people who have taken advantage of
- 7:01someone being truly kind to them. I am saying
- 7:04that because I think it's sad that we live in
- 7:07a world as human beings where So few people have
- 7:13had someone show them grace and true kindness.
- 7:20Last but not least, before I read what's here,
- 7:24is that people will often try, people can sometimes
- 7:31become jealous and envious of people that they
- 7:35think are lucky or they have this mindset of,
- 7:41Who do you think you are? Not realizing that
- 7:44many of us have had people show up in our lives
- 7:48who have literally shown up as guardian or earth
- 7:53angels. It has happened to me many, many times.
- 7:57I am not here because here in Brazil, because
- 8:01I have a wealthy family. That is not who has
- 8:05taken care. That's not who takes care of me.
- 8:07I am not here because I have a wealthy husband.
- 8:10partner or a spouse I am not here because I have
- 8:13a job or money saved sponsoring me I have pulled
- 8:17myself up by my own bootstraps created a lifestyle
- 8:20for myself and I've worked damn hard for it and
- 8:24I make no apologies for that even as an American
- 8:26so with that being said I can tell people that
- 8:31every single day but because they've never seen
- 8:35it they don't believe it And so I cried after
- 8:43I read this, and I'm going to read it out loud.
- 8:46It is from the Facebook page, Humans of St. Louis.
- 8:51And this is about the Regional Arts Commission
- 8:54of St. Louis with a person named Cameron Jamar.
- 8:59This was posted six days ago, but it just posted
- 9:02up on my, it just showed up on my Facebook feed
- 9:05this morning. It's the 22nd. of 25 posts, which
- 9:11looks like a series. Okay, so it reads, eventually
- 9:15I was in Beverly Hills wearing an all black three
- 9:18-piece suit as a host in this witsy ass steakhouse
- 9:23trying to make it all work. This would be my
- 9:26life for about a year and a half before getting
- 9:28a job at a five -star beachfront hotel in Malibu,
- 9:31which allowed me to finally get out of my car
- 9:34and into an apartment again. I had a place that
- 9:38was entirely too small and expensive in Koreatown,
- 9:41but I was grateful to have a bed, running water,
- 9:44a kitchen, and a bathroom. I was grateful to
- 9:48not be outside, grateful to have somewhere to
- 9:50cook a hot meal and stretch my feet. Basic needs,
- 9:54not wants, needs. I was around all these celebrities
- 9:58and insanely wealthy people. I was looking at
- 10:01the beach every day. I was seeing dolphins. As
- 10:04a host, I'd stand there. with a lot of free time
- 10:07to read during the day. And I had time to think
- 10:11about what my future would look like. So I'd
- 10:14be daydreaming and tell myself when I'm in my
- 10:16mid 40s, early 50s, it'd be nice to start a theater
- 10:20company. And my theater company is going to do
- 10:23better than what I've seen from some of these.
- 10:55And she said, I keep hearing you talk about told
- 10:59her I'm an actor. I want to have a theater company
- 11:01one day. She said, sounds interesting. Do you
- 11:04have a business plan? I'm here for a week. Give
- 11:07me something. So every day after work, I go home,
- 11:11put together this plan for a theater company.
- 11:14I wasn't even ready to make. I thought, let me
- 11:17come up with this name. Soul Siren Playhouse.
- 11:22this, and here's a season I do it, and here's
- 11:25a budget I would need, and this is why I do it,
- 11:29and this is what I want the company to do. I
- 11:32figured it out in a week and sent it to her,
- 11:34and she replied to my email saying, I looked
- 11:37over everything and sent my correspondence via
- 11:40mail to your job. That kind of caught me off
- 11:43guard. I was like, she could have just told me
- 11:46to fuck off over email. Like, who sends personal
- 11:49letters anymore? This is strange. I went to work
- 11:54on my day off to get what she sent. It was a
- 11:56large envelope with a letter written inside in
- 11:59her own personal letterhead. It said, I looked
- 12:03over everything. I think this is an exciting
- 12:05project. I love to help support. Here is what
- 12:08you'll need for operational expenses. And there
- 12:11was a check for 25 ,000 American dollars. Dated
- 12:16March 5th, 2019, the day my mom died. four years
- 12:21prior and then it has the name of the person
- 12:25cameron jamar i don't know how to pronounce the
- 12:28middle or second last name actor writer founder
- 12:31of soul siren playhouse in st louis i read that
- 12:35and i started crying and it moved me to come
- 12:38in here and share this and read it out loud just
- 12:41to give homage but i also know that speaking
- 12:43out loud is a vibration It carries energy. It
- 12:47carries medicine. It carries magic. But let me
- 12:51just go back through this also again to give
- 12:54some more context and to put into context what
- 12:58I was saying about why it pisses me off. Petty
- 13:02ass people who want to interrupt someone who
- 13:06knows what their path is. It's always the person
- 13:09who doesn't have a path, who doesn't have, they
- 13:12don't know what their sole purpose is. They don't.
- 13:15They don't even know how to fucking dream. It's
- 13:19always those petty ass people who want to get
- 13:22in the way of those of us who are actually trying
- 13:25to help other people. And that is the shit that
- 13:28pisses me off and causes me to lose my temper.
- 13:30But I want to just kind of go through this step
- 13:33by step. I mean, paragraph by paragraph. So in
- 13:36the beginning, he talks about where he was living,
- 13:39how he was living. He finally got out of the
- 13:42streets living in his car, I believe it was,
- 13:45yeah, and found a place to live that wasn't perfect.
- 13:51It wasn't what he wanted, but it was what he
- 13:55needed. People don't realize, yes, I have slept
- 13:58in my mother's truck before. I have lived in
- 14:02at the YMCA before. Right. So they see me here.
- 14:07They see me in other places and they think, oh,
- 14:09she's wealthy. I should take advantage of her
- 14:12or, oh, she's wealthy. She she owes me or I can
- 14:17try to milk her or try to scam her or, oh, she's
- 14:22wealthy. She thinks she's a. an American with
- 14:26money. She thinks she's better than us. They
- 14:28don't know shit about my fucking life. And this
- 14:31also has a lot to do with what media portrays.
- 14:34It's unfortunate that a lot of people around
- 14:37the world only see the ritzy glamour things about
- 14:41Americans. Not every American is wealthy, right?
- 14:45Next paragraph. He says that he was around all
- 14:49those celebrities and things that way. lot of
- 14:51time. So when he wasn't doing something, he talks
- 14:54about how he would basically daydream, or we
- 14:57would talk about like scripting your life, like
- 14:59where you imagine how you want your life to be.
- 15:02I love that. I admire that. I love people who
- 15:05use their imagination to start manifesting and
- 15:07materializing things. But here's the other thing.
- 15:10There are too many people in the world, again,
- 15:13who tried to come between people like him, like
- 15:15myself and other people I know who know their
- 15:18purpose, who are trying to help other people.
- 15:20things of that nature, right? People who sit
- 15:23around and don't do anything with their free
- 15:27time. They don't know how to dream. They don't
- 15:29know how to fucking manifest. And instead of
- 15:32them trying to build their dream or go volunteer
- 15:35somewhere, they sit around and try to think of
- 15:38ways to sabotage other people. He spent his time
- 15:42envisioning what he wanted his life to look like
- 15:46in his 40s and 50s. However, again, People who
- 15:50are petty, people who are jealous, people who
- 15:53are envious spend their time on social media
- 15:56looking at dumb shit that doesn't get them anywhere.
- 15:59They spend more time trying to figure out how
- 16:02to scam somebody for short -term progress or
- 16:07for a short -term win. And instead of figuring
- 16:11out how do I get myself out of this situation
- 16:15so that I'm not repeating the cycle? How do I?
- 16:18get myself out of this situation so that my kids
- 16:21don't have to go through with what I went through
- 16:23or whatever. Next, he talks about meeting the
- 16:27woman and how she was generous. I have met people
- 16:31like this most of my life who have literally
- 16:34just shown up and just literally took me off
- 16:39the street or whatever. They may not have had
- 16:41a bed for me to sleep in, but they offered me
- 16:43a roof over my head, a hot shower and a clean
- 16:46bed or a sofa, right? So this is reality for
- 16:52some people, for some people who have been living
- 16:56their lives right, morally, holding a dream.
- 17:00They may not have done everything correctly or
- 17:04right in life, but people like this exist. I
- 17:08have said this many, many times. There are earth
- 17:12angels in the world. He talks about the woman
- 17:16and how she would go into the restaurant and
- 17:18the bar and she would sit there and mind her
- 17:19business and drink her wine or whatever. So many
- 17:22times it has been the person who does not look
- 17:26like me, meaning they either have not been a
- 17:30woman or they have not been black, right? So
- 17:33many people will immediately come to judgment
- 17:36about someone else based off of how they look.
- 17:40Oh, she's white. She's... evil. That means she's
- 17:43automatically racist or they're Republican or
- 17:46they are automatically this or they're automatically
- 17:49that. I literally went to have lunch the other
- 17:51day with a man who is a Black American, but he's
- 17:57lived outside of the country for quite a while.
- 17:58And this topic came up and we were just kind
- 18:00of talking about people that we have experienced
- 18:03and learned from in life. We may not necessarily
- 18:06see eye to eye when it comes to politics or certain
- 18:10things, but At some point, when you really take
- 18:15time to get to know someone, and this was the
- 18:17foundation, and then I'm going to wrap this up.
- 18:19This was the foundation of our online peer -to
- 18:22-peer support group for women. And that was,
- 18:24don't come to my online support group with your
- 18:27fuck shit and your preconceived notions about
- 18:32people based off of things you don't even know.
- 18:38Things you've overheard or shit you gossip about
- 18:40or bullshit that you see on TV or whatever, right?
- 18:44Here on the porch, we focus more on the things
- 18:49that we have in common as opposed to the things
- 18:52that we think are different. When we actually
- 18:55take time to get to know someone and get rid
- 18:59of the things we think about. we know about a
- 19:01different culture or things that we think we
- 19:03know about a foreigner or a woman or a man or
- 19:07a race or whatever the fuck may be, a gender,
- 19:10a sexuality or whatever, we will find that we
- 19:13often have more things in common with someone
- 19:16or that they may be better able to assist us
- 19:20in our dreams if we actually have dreams and
- 19:24take time to get to know our own purpose instead
- 19:27of trying to copy and... mimic other people,
- 19:32influences. Those are often the people that can
- 19:36help us get to where we need to be, where we
- 19:38want to be, where God, our ancestors need for
- 19:42us to be. And to get our generations from under
- 19:48us, it just blows my mind. But I just wanted
- 19:52to come in here and share that because I do be
- 19:54having my moments where I just be looking at
- 19:57people like, you are wasting my fucking time.
- 20:00You are wasting my time. And when you waste my
- 20:04time, you interrupt me from being able to help
- 20:07more people who actually deserve to be helped.
