- 0:00It's a privilege to be able to share a lesson.
- 0:04It's a privilege to have my son here from Nashville, Tennessee
- 0:07and his family's here too, but they're at home to limit the
- 0:12contact but I'm proud of my grandchildren and my
- 0:18daughter-in-law and on a different occasion under
- 0:22different circumstances. I'm going to show them off.
- 0:24So there you go. Brandon works as a minister with
- 0:27the National Church of Christ. There are all digital right now.
- 0:30Various reasons Nashville's one of those Urban centers that has
- 0:33difficulty meeting still there. Very few churches there that are
- 0:37meeting alive, aren't we? Blessed?
- 0:40Just counting has been six months since we started by God's
- 0:43grace. No, no issues and I'm cases, but
- 0:46we continue to be careful as this year continues and comes to
- 0:50an end and we're still talking about something that has a
- 0:53number 19 connected with it. Oh, good grief alive, maybe one
- 0:57day, it will be gone. I am aware of time constraints.
- 1:03It's 10:30 to so I have 28 minutes because there are very
- 1:06important Awards to be given right afterwards.
- 1:08So as usual Live Twice as much as I have time for, so you're
- 1:13going to have to finish the lace less than and make it better.
- 1:15That's all we are job. Anyway, always hopeful that
- 1:19something thoughtful will be delivered through me.
- 1:23Always of course, truth in spirit.
- 1:27I hope that my my the source of my lessons.
- 1:30From that, and thank you again for the opportunity to do this.
- 1:35So the value of 1, the value of 1 Hollywood is not very good at
- 1:45telling stories. Maybe they once were they were
- 1:48better at it, but they've gotten a really bad lately.
- 1:52Don't trust them. Don't follow him much, see,
- 1:55sporadically only even television, it's kind of rare.
- 2:01It takes me. 45 minutes to search through Netflix to find
- 2:04anything of value. I might want to see and then
- 2:06after two minutes, I bought it. See the violent or it's crass or
- 2:11the narrative is shallow, superficial.
- 2:16It's only meant to entertain our de razzle-dazzle with with
- 2:20pyrotechnics digitally. Speaking, or I can tell from the
- 2:24beginning, or you can do a lot, my wife, she goes to the ending
- 2:27and see how the ending that she does for books.
- 2:30And then she decides, she wants to read the thing and and I say
- 2:33no, you can't do that. That but that's her way.
- 2:37Mine is I give you 3 minutes. If you don't grab me or if you
- 2:40start with a certain narrative, well, then it'll eat.
- 2:46You know, there you go. Nice little button that you have
- 2:49turn the TV off. Turn the tollywood off and tell
- 2:52them. Nope.
- 2:53You missed it again. You missed me.
- 2:55I hope you miss most of the Americans as well from time to
- 3:01time. They it's something that If it's
- 3:05going to take 2 or 3 hours of my life that there might be
- 3:09meaningful not that I agree with everything in it or but that at
- 3:13least provokes thoughts. And so I'm going to dare to
- 3:17bring in my lustration here for my lesson, something from
- 3:21Hollywood and let's pray to goodness.
- 3:24It doesn't backfire on me. So there you go, Matt Damon
- 3:282015, the Martian had a budget of 112 million dollars.
- 3:33They've already made six. Hundred twenty million back, but
- 3:36let me make sure you understand numbers.
- 3:38Don't tell the whole story watch out, just because something
- 3:42makes money is not a sign of either good or, or anything else
- 3:47for that matter. Sometimes we buy the wrong
- 3:50thing. At least, our culture.
- 3:52Does it got my attention, it. I've seen it more than once
- 3:59because it provokes some thoughts.
- 4:01And now, of course, my hope is that, as, with me, That we were
- 4:05related to the spiritual. Of course.
- 4:08This is not a promotion of a movie.
- 4:10It's using an illustration of a concept of a concept.
- 4:16So 108 million six hundred, thirty million box, office
- 4:21Ridley, Scott. He's the maker of gladiator and
- 4:24some other Titanic. No, that would be a different
- 4:28gentleman, but he generally tells stories when he goes
- 4:32historically, like, with gladiator, he tries to do his
- 4:35Homework here. This is fictional.
- 4:36It's about Science Fiction. It's about to travel to Mars and
- 4:40back and forth. But the razzle-dazzle digitally
- 4:44is very impressive. It's realistic as much as we can
- 4:48foresee, the realism of making a Journey to Mars and living there
- 4:53for a while and then coming back.
- 4:55But it's a story of a person that's lost a lost person and
- 5:00that is a narrative that truly within our culture.
- 5:05We have quite often turn to very often.
- 5:10We have, you can go back earlier than the examples.
- 5:13I've got on the screen. Like, for example, you can go
- 5:16back to the time of the Aeneid by Virgil in the first century
- 5:20before Christ. One of the great epic poems of
- 5:23ancient Romans. It's a story of here own NES
- 5:27fictional who is lost and he wanders around Mediterranean
- 5:30till he finally gets to the place where he's destined to be
- 5:34to go. Go home, so to speak.
- 5:36That's an epic poem that for twenty centuries, has resonated
- 5:40still studies in the schools. Dante Alighieri in the 14th
- 5:45century, wrote an epic poem, bubble in Lost fact, he starts
- 5:48out the poem that way. It's a hundred chapters.
- 5:51It's a journey into the Afterlife.
- 5:53It's a spiritual journey into the world of hell, and the
- 5:57fictional world. And fortunately of that Catholic
- 6:00theology called purgatory and then it ends up in heaven.
- 6:03It's a journey of a man about the age of 35, who is making a
- 6:06journey at in about the middle of his life in the worlds of the
- 6:10afterlife and gets come back and what he wants to.
- 6:12Tell all of you, all of me is, don't get stuck in rule.
- 6:16Number one. You really don't?
- 6:18We ruled world number 2, which of course, is not a new
- 6:22testament. It's a invention of the medieval
- 6:25theology. You want to make it to heaven,
- 6:27and I agree with that one. Anybody else is takers on that
- 6:30one. Oh, no, I'm lost.
- 6:33I want to go home. My home is heaven.
- 6:36So good job downtown on that part, you know, of the journey,
- 6:40there, Robinson Crusoe. By Daniel, Defoe, the, your
- 6:441719, that's about a man who travels around in the Indian
- 6:48Ocean and gets lost, and the island in the Indian Ocean and
- 6:52maybe you've read it maybe in your early AZ, read it.
- 6:55But it's about. It's a narrative that we like we
- 6:58are sometimes. Obsessed with were passionate
- 7:00about the movie Castaway. It's now 20 years old.
- 7:06Tom Hanks. No, not the story of Gilligan.
- 7:09That's a different Island and a different, you know, comedy.
- 7:13It's about being lost and Adventures of Tom Hanks has a
- 7:19FedEx administrator and he spends, I think it's about four
- 7:23years. If I recall, you know,
- 7:25struggling to survive alone, talking to a volleyball and then
- 7:30finally making it home to find a changed World.
- 7:34By the time he's lost. We like the idea of lost to
- 7:39movie series and didn't watch it.
- 7:41But the loss on ABC Ran for about six years about a people
- 7:44again, struggling against various different situations its
- 7:49fictional on island in the Pacific.
- 7:52And and it's a group of people. They come all of them with
- 7:57secrets and issues, but on the island, it's like a start-over.
- 8:01It's a do-over because nobody knows about the past, but you,
- 8:05you then have to, you know, make your new life on this lost
- 8:08island. Then there are real ones.
- 8:10Those are fictional. That's TV.
- 8:11That's Hollywood. Then there's real ones like the
- 8:14story of Apollo 13. Maybe you've seen that movie
- 8:17with Tom Hanks, again about three astronauts lost.
- 8:20Of course, April 13th and 1970. That could be would have been
- 8:26should have been a tragedy yet. It turned to something very
- 8:30standing, Lee refreshing and encouraging because all the
- 8:34efforts of NASA and indeed the world was bruited as the
- 8:40journalist told the story of Bringing home those three, those
- 8:45three men who had wandered in space in our name and had
- 8:50families back home and didn't make it back.
- 8:52And that's a good ending. We like the good endings.
- 8:55Of course, if you haven't seen the movie Impossible.
- 8:59It's about a real story. It's in the, it's a valuable to
- 9:03you, but it's from 2012. It's about the true story of a
- 9:06Spanish. Dr. Bellin, who is in vacation
- 9:11in Thailand, and, and then that 100 foot wave Toonami hits when
- 9:15the earthquake happens there off the coast of Thailand and
- 9:18absolutely destroys 230,000. People are lost their lives and
- 9:25she barely survives badly wounded.
- 9:27This is a true story and she doesn't know where her husband
- 9:31and her three sons. Are she knows her one son is she
- 9:34thinks she has lost her family? It's a heart riveting story.
- 9:37It's true and movie tries to represent that and just recently
- 9:42in I intend to 33 Chilean mining disaster.
- 9:47It happened just ten years ago. The story of whether they're on
- 9:51a fictional planet or a real planet, but fictional story or
- 9:55they're in trying to find each other after a horrendous
- 10:00Toonami, real story, or there in the bottom of a mine, trying to
- 10:06get out and, and all the world is riveted on the story.
- 10:08Looking for the, the result of final result.
- 10:12Out of how it's all going to play out.
- 10:15The Martian is fictional, but it's about losing one man.
- 10:21It's about losing one. There were 18, but what happened
- 10:26was, there was a storm and the lab the house on on Mars is, is
- 10:31hit and they have to get off the planet.
- 10:33And as they're making their way towards the spaceship, one of
- 10:36them gets hit by piece of metal. They think he's lost that can't
- 10:39see anything and they leave thinking he's dead.
- 10:42And so They are traveling back, and it's going to take, you
- 10:44know, two years to get back to Earth.
- 10:46And in the meanwhile, we get to see the spectators get to see
- 10:50the story. Know, he survived, and he wakes
- 10:52up, and he's all alone on a planet far, far away, and the
- 10:56next Journey, planned and no, you can't do it.
- 10:58Sooners four years out. Now.
- 11:01Here's the question, how you going to survive?
- 11:04This is the caption Ford, and the throttling and rigorously
- 11:07realistic. Outer space, Survival Story,
- 11:09which Matt Damon plays a NASA. Botanist stranded on the road.
- 11:12Planet. After a sandstorm forces, his
- 11:14crewmates to abort the mission, the media, at the time, praised.
- 11:21It like crazy. I don't trust Rolling Stone, but
- 11:23here it is. The Martian is an
- 11:27unapologetically stirring celebration of our ability as a
- 11:31species to solve even the most daunting problems the
- 11:34irrational. Start step-by-step.
- 11:36Yes. Most of the movie is one man,
- 11:38trying to figure out, okay, how am I going to make it and
- 11:41disasters happen? They're all the potatoes.
- 11:43They planted burn up in a fire. He has to do surgery on himself
- 11:49or at least Stitch a wound. He has to figure out how to go
- 11:52full hundred miles across the planet to reach.
- 11:55The only thing that might Them somewhere off the space of the
- 11:59planet and close to the rescuing Mission.
- 12:02That's coming his way. It's about our intelligence or
- 12:07smarts our will to survive. What we will do.
- 12:10When we do lose heart, when we just want to take it one day at
- 12:15a time, one step at a time, will to survive.
- 12:17Of course, you can tell in the narrative, what they're
- 12:20praising. They're praising our science,
- 12:22our smarts our intelligence, our ability to survive our ability.
- 12:26To resolve problems to come up with things but it emphasizes
- 12:30rational thought you catch that rational thought step-by-step
- 12:36take one day at a time and we can do amazing things.
- 12:42True. God made us intelligent
- 12:45creative. But again, Where's God in all
- 12:50this picture? Where's God?
- 12:53And by the way, while we are throw in thrall?
- 12:56We are thrilled by stories where they're fictional, or definitely
- 13:00real of survival of rescuing 33 from a mine and rescuing three
- 13:06astronauts from space. And, and the odds were, you
- 13:10know, ten percent. Five percent two percent were
- 13:13thrilled, by those stories were captivated by him.
- 13:16We make movies out of them. We have been telling stories
- 13:19about that fictional and not all along.
- 13:23But you know, Back home in the meanwhile, there are stories in
- 13:28there and tragically they're all over the news, but they don't
- 13:32make us film it and they'll make it to, this is in a real day on
- 13:36a real Wednesday in Michigan. Police discovered the body of a
- 13:40man who likely been dead in his own four-year, deputies checked
- 13:43in the home of Gary, Richard by 69 at the request of a neighbor
- 13:46in northern Michigan. Buys does not have any known
- 13:49family. His parents are dead.
- 13:50He was retired, not married. Period.
- 13:55Wow, 7.3 billion people who are in the world.
- 14:00We are enthralled at the rescue of and that's great.
- 14:03And fine of three are 33 or one and yet on any given day.
- 14:11The lonely. The lost.
- 14:14The, we didn't even know, you know.
- 14:18They're they're, you know, or like, for example, in China
- 14:24happened the same year. This movie came out beside him,
- 14:27woman dies on Hong Kong McDonald's.
- 14:29No one notices for seven hours. They had a video camera.
- 14:33She slouches over. People come in, they eat, they
- 14:38come and they go never a word never conversation.
- 14:41The homeless woman was found dead on Saturday morning 24
- 14:44hours after she entered. The restaurant footage, shows
- 14:47her slumping after 1:00 a.m. At the table.
- 14:50No one noticed until the next morning.
- 14:52I can't think of a satyr human situation and yet I'm about to
- 14:57say What's missing in the Martian?
- 15:04Is God. What's Miss Missing in
- 15:07McDonald's is God? What's missing in the lonely and
- 15:13homeless is God. And what's missing in the
- 15:18majority of people in our world is God.
- 15:23What's the value of 1 in The Martian, the movie?
- 15:26This is what caught me. There is the important question,
- 15:30which is if I die today weather because they left me behind on a
- 15:34fictional, you know, Mars trip or in a bottom of a mine for
- 15:39real or in the effects of a tsunami in Thailand, and I was
- 15:44just on vacation. I thought it was a Only thing if
- 15:47I die today today, I don't survive.
- 15:52Am I part of a greater picture greater plan?
- 15:55Or is it just me slumping over at McDonald's and that's it.
- 15:59There's no epic poem. There's no movie.
- 16:01There's no novel going to be written about that.
- 16:05Sad, just does one matter does one matter.
- 16:09What's the value of one? You see, does the value of a man
- 16:14or woman reside in an ultimate greater?
- 16:16Cause that's what the scientist astronaut Matt?
- 16:20Damon asked. But he comes up with the wrong
- 16:24answer. He thinks science and
- 16:26exploration is the ultimate greater cause that he's involved
- 16:30in in the movie. That's true.
- 16:32But as human beings, no, It's not true.
- 16:37Whatever we do in life or profession.
- 16:39Whatever our skills are. What is the value of US?
- 16:42Each one of us every child in this Auditorium.
- 16:45Every adult in his daughter. What is everybody its own line?
- 16:49What is the your value? Is it defined by what you give
- 16:55leave behind as a legacy to the world money ideas institutions,
- 17:01people, you influenced. Is that it?
- 17:04What's the big picture? What's the value of 1?
- 17:09And that is I think the correct question.
- 17:12Why is the Martian that why do you strike a chord with me?
- 17:15Because it asked the right question and it's just something
- 17:17come up with the right answer. So I got to give it today and I
- 17:20have 12 minutes. What's the right answer to the
- 17:24right question. Does the value of a man or woman
- 17:27reside? He said it, he said, what will
- 17:30it profit a man? He was a construction worker
- 17:34from a small village of 400 people, or he was more than
- 17:38that. What did he say?
- 17:40What will it profit? A man?
- 17:42If he gains the whole world and loses his own soul.
- 17:46That's it. Are you part of a bigger
- 17:48picture? Yes.
- 17:51Yes, but it's not about preservation of the body of the
- 17:56Martian. It's not about the preservation
- 17:58of the bodies of the Chilean miners, or the bodies of that
- 18:02fist, Spanish family in the tsunami.
- 18:05It's about the souls. It's always about the soul.
- 18:08The soul is the bigger picture. The soul is the bigger picture.
- 18:14What will it profit? A man, if he gains the whole
- 18:17world and loses his own, the value?
- 18:22Of a soul is measured by its Eternal quality.
- 18:27The Latin term coined by theologians Middle Ages.
- 18:31We were made Genesis chapter 2. We were made Imago Dei.
- 18:35We were made in the image of God.
- 18:37Nothing else in the world has what we have where the top
- 18:42creative act of God. This whole world is only
- 18:44Universe was made for us. It was made to be our home.
- 18:47It was meant to be a good home. Good good.
- 18:49Good. Good, good.
- 18:50Very good when it came to you. And I Everyone made in the image
- 18:54of God. He blew a soul into you and me.
- 19:01That's the part. That won't die.
- 19:04The our body will and in these real stories and fictional the
- 19:08body may die, but not the sole. There's only two options.
- 19:14We either there is something at their eye for there is nothing
- 19:17afterlife. Nothing after Life Is A Lie.
- 19:20That's been told for all eternity since the garden by a
- 19:23certain snake. All you have this here now.
- 19:27False. The Eternal value of our soul
- 19:32who we really are as measured by Eternal quality.
- 19:35It will never die. It is the part that has it's not
- 19:38our electric impulses in our brain that give us wisdom and
- 19:43give us understanding. That's false.
- 19:45What is true? What gives us the capacity to no
- 19:49good, right? And wrong are moral.
- 19:51Our ethics, our understanding our wisdom.
- 19:54They are part of the Eternal part of us, Spirit of Second
- 19:59Timothy 3:7. We can always be learning.
- 20:02Paul says and never able to come to the knowledge of truth.
- 20:05Yes Big T truth. It exists.
- 20:07You be in the search Port, find it hold on to it and pass it on.
- 20:13It's about not just accumulating knowledge.
- 20:18It's about truth. That's what our goal should be.
- 20:22The value of a soul is measured by Satan's interest.
- 20:26In it. He's lost.
- 20:27He's chained done to put him at the center of the earth at the
- 20:31core of the earth. That was a medieval Theologian
- 20:35who was just making it up. Where is Satan?
- 20:38I don't know. He spiritual he Spirit to but he
- 20:40was a fallen angel who disobeyed God.
- 20:43And all he wants to do is take you and me down with them.
- 20:50How valuable is your soul? It's so valuable that Satan
- 20:53working overtime. So you and I will join them
- 20:58misery loves company. people that are involved in sinful
- 21:03activities, want us to join them before because they feel
- 21:06criticized if we don't, Satan is the prince of the world, this
- 21:13world. And what's my soul?
- 21:17God created a perfect world, but the End of Time.
- 21:21The second coming of Christ will see the destruction of this
- 21:24world was created for a while. To be our home in by it was
- 21:28ruined by sin. It's a fallen world.
- 21:30And we are promised by Jesus the son of God, a home in heaven.
- 21:35That's the end of the story. If you're in Christ, God never
- 21:40wanted suffering. Never wanted death, never wanted
- 21:43War. Those of the Issues connected
- 21:48with sin because we brought sin man failed the test.
- 21:53I failed the test, you failed the test.
- 21:57We would have done just like Adam.
- 21:59We don't let ourselves be talked into grabbing that fruit.
- 22:03And that is the truth. The value also is measured by
- 22:09the severity of its laws. And here's where it gets
- 22:13confusing. We will put like in the movie,
- 22:15The Martian, all the efforts, the intelligence, the technology
- 22:19of China and us, and the world will put it on a big screen in
- 22:23Times Square. The, you know, Rescue of One
- 22:26man. This is fictional movies.
- 22:28But with Apollo 13, it was real. Everybody was just glued to the
- 22:33screen and it's understandable. We will, we will absolutely be
- 22:38obsessed and captivated with the saving of three astronauts, but
- 22:43one soul. Were not concerned about that.
- 22:48You're told you're telling and I'm not supposed to be just as
- 22:51upset no more. If a man a woman is in danger of
- 22:56losing their soul, every effort should be made all of that,
- 23:01which we do fictionally or real to save one or say 33.
- 23:05We should be doing for the soul of mankind.
- 23:08This is not a new lesson. It's an old one.
- 23:11It's a reminder one. The Kingdom of Heaven had 3,000
- 23:17converts in the first day and the day of Pentecost, sometimes
- 23:20Mass conversions happen, but most of the book of Acts you'll
- 23:23recall is one conversion at a time.
- 23:26One, the value of 1, it starts with one.
- 23:29Let's start with one. How valuable is it?
- 23:34The value of a soul is measured by God's concern for saving even
- 23:40one. God wants one.
- 23:43He is not one. He is not willing that any
- 23:45should perish but all should come to repentance.
- 23:48Why has the Son of God? Not return.
- 23:50The early church said, may come soon.
- 23:52I hope you and I are still praying.
- 23:54May he come son, but that said, why is God postponing?
- 23:58Why hasn't any coming? Why has the second coming
- 24:01designed by God the Father? Why hasn't come back yet?
- 24:05Because he's wanting us to bring one more.
- 24:09One more. Back home, Romans. 5:8, God
- 24:13demonstrates his love toward us in that while we were still
- 24:16sinners Christ died for us, aren't you?
- 24:20And I the Blessed ones. We know the truth.
- 24:23We are saved in Christ, and we need to bring one.
- 24:27More value was sold. As measured by the price paid
- 24:31for its Redemption. Son of God would have had to
- 24:34die, you know, this, but let me say it out loud again for one,
- 24:38if at a 7.3 billion people in this world.
- 24:41Only one in the knowledge of God God is omniscient.
- 24:47He knows history, that's going to be he would have sent his son
- 24:54for 11. Jesus would have had to die for
- 24:59one. We know that.
- 25:02First Peter knowing that you were not redeemed with
- 25:05corruptible things like silver, or gold from your aimless,
- 25:08conduct received by tradition from your father's, but with the
- 25:11precious blood of Christ as of a lamb, without blemish, and
- 25:15without spot one word In this passage by Peter is precious
- 25:19precious. It's the most expensive thing
- 25:23ever, in the history of the world mankind.
- 25:26Nothing all the money, the man put together, nothing.
- 25:30It pales in comparison to the price that God had to pay for
- 25:33your soul from my soul. And that's the same value of
- 25:38given to all other Souls. Do not fear Those Who Kill the
- 25:43body, but cannot kill the soul, rather fear Him, who cannot
- 25:46destroy both soul and body. He said this the apostles.
- 25:50He said, things are going to happen to you.
- 25:53Once you sign up for being my disciples of my Apostles.
- 25:57You are going to live out your rest of your lives.
- 25:59You're going to be persecuted and but be, please remember
- 26:02this. You may be filled thrown in
- 26:04prison. You may be executed.
- 26:07But remember what matters? Most the value of In that same
- 26:12context, you will say, listen, you care for Birds little
- 26:17sparrows that, you know, get wounded and hurt are not Two
- 26:21Sparrows, which was the lowest operating you could give at the
- 26:25temple then worth sold for a penny by the people that Soul
- 26:29offerings at the temple are not one of them.
- 26:32Not one of them will fall to the ground.
- 26:34Apart from your father. Your father knows the life of
- 26:37every creature he made on this in this universe and on the This
- 26:42planet, even the hairs of your head are numbered pair, not.
- 26:50You are more value than any other. so, Luke 15.
- 27:01There are at least 28 Parables teaching.
- 27:05Stories that we have of Jesus. It was one of his favorite
- 27:09teachings methods because it was in the culture of the time and
- 27:13he pulled from Agriculture and from home life and and, and he
- 27:19made that, which could have seen, simple complex simple.
- 27:23Here's a story. And two lines or 20 either way.
- 27:27Do you understand Luke? Compressors in what we call
- 27:32chapter 15 3. They're all about lost, the lost
- 27:38sheep, the Lost coin. The lost son.
- 27:44It's a progression. Jesus will say to the Pharisees.
- 27:49You let people go rescue. The sheep that fall in a ditch
- 27:53on the Sabbath yet. You say man can't rescue another
- 27:58human being on the Sabbath. You've got things upside down.
- 28:01You care more about sheep thing you do about human beings.
- 28:04You care about my money, you care about human beings, their
- 28:09souls, their eternity. One start one more time.
- 28:17In each of those Parables, there is the angels in heaven Rejoice,
- 28:24you know, the powers that be in heaven rejoice and in The
- 28:28Prodigal Son. There's God the Father rejoices
- 28:32one. Value of one.
- 28:37So what's the lesson about? What's our job?
- 28:46Bring them home. Bring him home.
- 28:53One at a time. Bring him home.
- 28:58If you're in Christ, you have a need.
- 29:01We're going to offer a moment of prayer and consolation and
- 29:05there's going to be a human sung and Island.
- 29:10If you are not in Christ. There's no more valuable thing
- 29:17with tumko and you. I'm more valuable thing in the
- 29:21state of Alabama than you are not saved in Christ.
- 29:27Realize your value to God and come home.
- 29:33Would you come in sweet anything?
