- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Gloves off at Enforcer Code, part of the Ice Guardian Network.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: And today I am sitting here right now and actually a little bit trembling in my seat as uh Bullshit.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: The one, the only, the two in my era of playing, the two toughest men to ever lace them up in hockey.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Since Proby's not here, I will put Proby in there too.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: But what a compliment.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Tony Twist.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Anthony R.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Twist.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Anthony R.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: The R for Rory, which is well, nicely put, Michael.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: Look at you.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: I got a shout out to all my Detroit guys because the mascot in Detroit Alliance's name Rory.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: So it comes in.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: But Tony, uh, this is such an honor uh for joining us.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Well, thanks for letting me on.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: I know the uh you guys are launching out this show.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be stellar, the people that you're gonna be able to connect with and the repertoire of people that you've played with and off the ice, you know, wrestler over here, pro every pro sport over here.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: And you've got uh what's the name of your uh your your liquor that you're putting out these days?
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, Angels Enforces Envy.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: And I knew the name of what I was looking at there.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: So again, how's that going?
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: It's going awesome.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: It's going awesome.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: I I uh I tasted it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: It's not my I I don't drink anymore only because I don't have to not not because I have to, but just I lost the flavor for it.
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: But it does taste pretty damn good.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: It is good stuff, yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: Well done.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Well, I appreciate that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: You know, a lot of things that you got going too.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have to talk about that, but I'd be we don't have to talk about that stuff.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: I would I love to because of what you know.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Let's start there, because what you got going on, because there's a whole thing too.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: What is the bare knuckle podcast, which is there's five of us, and again, it's we're predicating it on uh we're starting it out as you know, a hockey, just so everybody gets established.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Reed Lowe, Jamie Rivers, myself, Jim Campbell, and and uh and Kim Jansons, and we're doing uh we're doing stories that we have, like and then we're gonna graduate into uh other people where I'd like to talk about what it is, and this is my direction where I'm gonna bring guys on board.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: Mike Chandler's gonna be a partner and Rick Flair's and uh and uh operators in in the uh in the industry of of navy and marine and army and talk about their experiences and how because it's all relatable, right, boys?
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: Let's think the arena is always always going to be uh changeable, but the game is always the same.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: It really is because what on the platform that all these other guys performed at, all right, that was our game too, all right.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Consequences are different, obviously, but the mentality stays the same.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: How do you exchange going on the ice for nine months a year, beating the hell out of people?
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: And then during that, going home and trying to have relations with your family, like to connect, like difference between being there, being present, but actually being there, they're all relatable because your head's somewhere else.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: You know, not because you don't want you want it to be there.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: But let's not kid ourselves.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: You're lining up the next guy that two weeks from now.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: You're already fought the guy 20 times in your head, because if you don't, you're gonna get hurt.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: And if you're not able to do that, you know, maybe there's something else that you're doing that you're not getting pre-prepped that is giving you a disadvantage before you get on there.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: So these guys are all the same.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: So talk about our show is gonna start off in hockey, but we're gonna graduate to that the unanimous game and arena thing.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: What it is to be a man going back, trying to share family, because we've all had our problems with that.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: I know I have.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: And when I say that, I say it's not because there was no aggressive, no physical, just the mental, like my kids have suffered.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: You know, let's be serious.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: How do they not suffer when you're not around?
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, you want to be there.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: I think you bring up a great point, Tony.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: And I think this is where a lot of us, you know, and we can talk about the the good old days and and all this other stuff, but with the way that mental health is these days, to be able to talk about it, we live in it.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: So when you see the locker room mentality of other professions, right?
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Because that's what when we're talking about the veterans, or we're talking about the service members, or we're talking about, you know, the the other fighters and other in other leagues and sports and stuff like this, there's a mentality to it that as men we gotta talk about.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: Because if we don't, you know, then we end up in bad in bad places.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: And I think that's taking the forefront of that and and being, hey, you know what, responsible to the fact to say, hey, I fucked up.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: And I did things or whatever, but I but it wasn't out of maliciousness, it was about not understanding.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: So and give permission for that person.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: You gotta have permission because I I promise you, none of us here, in order to be great at what you do, and you know, great, mean really, there's a difference between good, great, and legendary.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in order to be in those last two categories, there's going to be a sacrifice, and that sacrifice is going to, I don't know where that sacrifice lays, but I can tell you, number one is your personal relationships because you're not able to uh everybody says I switch it on and off.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: Bullshit.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: You cannot be every guy who's in the from an operator to anybody who fights, even UFC, they say it's not real.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Oh my God, the stuff they go through is is ridiculous.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: To our game, to football, in order to have that mentality, you have to have a 24-7.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: And but you have to have permission to feel you every guy.
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: How about this?
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: Every guy at the end of their career, you know, guys have been acting like dicks, you know, and they go, they come to the realization that then they then they give themselves permission to let it out.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: Well, you're you should be able to, while you're doing it, let it out, become a better person during that without losing your edge.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: Because any guy who's really good, anybody who's great, any great fighter has lost a lot of things in his personal life to achieve that.
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: And if he hadn't, he would have never been great.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: That is such that is such a good thing.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: And it's true, and it really is true.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: So, so like let's expand on that because I'm sitting here with you two, right?
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Where who were the guys that everybody knew when you're talking about having to go into Detroit or St.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Louis or Quebec or wherever wherever you guys were in the lineup, it was it was unbelievable, like to to hopefully not have to fight you guys.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: But from your perspective, well, you're in that you're you're in the same boat.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: You're in the same boat.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: You can't miss you can't forgive yourself from this because you know I see you're moderating, but I I don't like your I like your style, but you're in the same, you're in the same boat.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: But I would but I was asleep.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: But no, no, but I lose sleep night before.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: I didn't know.
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: I didn't lose sleep, no.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: No, I I did in the beginning.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I did in the beginning lose sleep.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: Um, in junior, I never lost sleep.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: I just said it's another day in the game.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: But you know, you weren't fighting men in junior.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: You were the biggest guy.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: You're fucking right, that's you.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: There, there is the difference.
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: So when you in even in the minors, they didn't lose sleep in the minors.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was just like going to the minors was like, this is just a glorified juniors, and but guys who thought they could do it, and you're destroying them.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: But then when you get when I first got in the league, it was like, yeah, I lost sleep.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: A little nervous.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Who would you have lost?
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Like, this is amazing because like who would you have like lost sleep with?
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Everybody.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: Everybody, because this is what I believe in for me personally.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: If you put anybody on a pedestal, right?
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: Anybody, and you've lost the fight already.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: So you have to treat it, doesn't matter if he's five foot tall, maybe fights once in a while, versus the guy that fights like Joey or Bobby or or yourself.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: You gotta be able to put them at the same level.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: As soon as you elevate somebody, that guy's you've lost the fight already.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: So in the beginning, I was everybody.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: There was not one person.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: I left more or less sleep.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: But after I got traded through Quebec, it was like, I gotta change this, and I just gotta, this is my job.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: And it was just a real coming to Jesus with myself, going, You're gonna do the job anyways.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: You've already fought the guy in the last two weeks.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: I've gone through everything.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm not losing sleep over you.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: If I lose sleep over, then you've got me.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: I'm not fucking losing sleep over you.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: I'm not just not doing it because now I'm putting you above me, and that's where it all changed.
- 8:37SPEAKER_04: Uh it changed me mentally, physically, and I was able to I was able to do the job better after that.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: And your preparation?
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: My preparation was always prepare differently differently for programming.
- 8:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, really?
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: No, no, no.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Again, going back to that, Joey's obviously we're gonna fight you.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: You got the right hand, you gotta, you know, we gotta keep that in perspective.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: Every so the fight is in my head, yeah, different.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: My fight journey in my head fought you 200 times already, every possible thing.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: So if I get dinged, you know, you don't see, I'm still going.
- 9:09SPEAKER_04: I have to watch the tape sometimes going, I don't remember.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay, because it becomes whenever you get hurt or you get in a position where you're having to go to battle, you go to your lowest form of training.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Any military guy will say that to you.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: Lowest form of training.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: But if your lowest form of training is up here, all right, when you're not, it comes automatic.
- 9:31SPEAKER_04: So if I've done 200 fights in my head, even though I don't remember, my lowest form of training is up here because I've already done it.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm automatically doing it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: And and there was no give up.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: There was no, you're not me.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: I'm still if you're knocking me down, I'm still fighting.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: I'm off, I'm still doing this till somebody gets in the biz.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: That's the that's the most important part of I think of anybody who's gonna be great.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: You have to do that prep.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: And I think that both, but and one of the things what I hear without you saying is because you both realized how important you were to your team, no matter who it was.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: And yourself also.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Don't exclude.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, I understand, but like when I say this, because there's levels to this, right?
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: I'm on I'm you'd I'm like Chaser, right?
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: I'm more like the like I can don't want to.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: So I think what he's trying to say, you'd be a light heavyweight.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: But here, but you the value of you, like I've told Chaser so many times, so understand the value of this.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: There would have been a no Tony twist about Kelly Chase.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean this, and I'll tell you why.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Because I didn't both of you guys are your skill levels way beyond mine.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna bullshit, let's be serious.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: The skill level is much better.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: So, in order for me to be successful in the game of hockey, I needed a guy like Kelly Chase from junior on the way up through pros.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: Why?
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: Because he could take, you know, he could actually play in the miners.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: He used 17 to 20 minutes, okay?
- 10:54SPEAKER_04: He had the opportunity to stir the shit, do the stuff, and he could pick and choose who he wanted to do.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: And he knew the time.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: But he also had somebody in the on the bench that they fucked him up.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: I'm next up, all right?
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: So that gave me an opportunity, a position to play, and that happened in the pros too, just like you you played quite a bit of hockey, a lot more than the two of us did in positions and lines that I would never see, you know, and you had the opportunity sporadically, but still a guy like you gave us jobs, all right.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Like Bobby, Bobby played a lot more than you did.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Uh huh.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: But what did Bob he depended on you to pick up the back feed?
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: Bro, I'm playing first or second line.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: You want to fuck with him?
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Hi, tag me the fuck in because you know, he's making work.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: He made your job valuable.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: He made Joey kosher who he is.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: Easier.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: Way easier, right?
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Yep, and you didn't have to go looking for it.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: You didn't have to chop people's heads off, you didn't have to run a goaltender to get action of business.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: That to me is But we did.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: You did, you know, I mean, sure, absolutely.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Must have been the Saskatchewan you want.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: Well, your value is not to be underestimated because you gave opportunity for guys like us to perform.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: And I can't tell, and I've told Chaser this so many times, I don't think he quite understands it.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: Is that he provided a platform for the pair of us?
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: I provided a platform for him because he much better skilled hockey player, way better.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: And he and he he demonstrated that over the course of a career.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: But he was able to get those skill sets and play in those lines because I was in the back.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: But he also stirred the shit and made work for me that made me relevant.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: If he hadn't done that, I wouldn't have been relevant.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: And he wouldn't have the opportunity to play under the to play under the guise of the two of us.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: You fuck with one, you get both.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, you talk about the booze both, you two guys, fuck.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: You get one, you get two.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: You don't want to get the best of one because what I'm Jesus, now I got the other guy.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: No, now the other guy, now I gotta bounce the next game off both of you.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: You bring that's such a great point, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: And and there's a for a guy like myself or whatever, there's a fearlessness I play with, knowing don't have a Kroby or a Joey.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: You can get me, right?
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: But then you gotta get the big guy.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: The big guy's coming.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: And you play better.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, 100% that space was provided, and your skill set and your contribution to the team was so much greater because of him.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, when I didn't have absolutely when I didn't have to worry, when I could worry about like in like you said, I had like playing with Stevie or playing playing up in the lineup, I could worry about protecting those guys against the guys that would play more.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Good job.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I got one here with him.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: You're right, you're right, you did.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Just what you're saying is you and I playing in 97, 98, made Shannon's life easy because Shannon would have had to play a different level.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Now he's a scorer.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: But you brought up Chaser, our dear friend.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I've I had the same issue.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I have Proby as a dear friend.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: You and Chaser had to fight.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: I want to know how you approach that.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: And did you approach it as not like you, which I think is so freaking.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Did you touch on this yet?
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: No.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: I'm not, I'm gonna invite the story and I want you to do it because I tell it and I laugh every time I tell it.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: Because you told this to me when you were looking for a job.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_04: Looking for a job, and Proby's running around, and you've you haven't found any, but you're still training, you want to work, you want to put yourself somewhere, and out of the blue, you go, Hey, Proby, next time you come into Detroit, I want you to run around like a chicken with your head get off, and you go from there.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: I'll go, I'll go back to prefaces, right?
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Where it said the only time that I ever, and it wasn't really a fight, but before this happened, because Proby's in Chicago, and he comes back in Joe Lewis and asked me to ever fight Proby.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: I said, Well, we got into it, and I actually like hit him and he was mad at me because I cut him in the ear.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Why'd you fight?
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Because he's standing by the bench and he swung Stevie two times in the face, and so like I have to hit him and whatever, but he's running around and being sort of menaced to your point, yeah, where at the time I'm the toughest guy, and then Shani's our second toughest.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: It takes the the whole uh the dynamics, the dynamics out of it.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: So, so then Joe.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Tell that joke, because that's a beautiful beer league, and it comes to be January and stuff like that.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: So this is class.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: So I was uh, it was November.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: I was playing in the beer league, and I went down to Chicago, Detroit game and uh talked to Proby after the game.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: And I said, Proby, next time you come to Detroit, you gotta get me back in the lake, doodle something stupid.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: He comes back the next time.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: He spears Shanny, beats up Jamie Pusher, runs everybody.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Scotty Bowman calls my agent the next day.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Tell Joe to get down the miners.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: We get in shape, we want to bring them back.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: So sure enough, they call me.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: And it happened quick, too.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: It happened six games.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, good God.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I come back at Christmas time.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Right after Christmas, first game I don't play, but that's the game that Sergey scored five goals.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: The next night, I actually play the game, start the game with Shani and Stevie on the line in Detroit.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: First shift, ran somebody over, got a penalty in the box.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Fans are going crazy anyway.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Next game in Chicago.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Four minutes in, line up against Proby at the face off.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Proby, let's go.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Kind of looks at me wine, like we're gonna fucking go.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Well, we end up fighting.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: And it was the point was I'm trying to kill him.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: But it it was 15 years later, we're sitting together writing our book.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: This is the killer.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm talking to Proby, and I'm like, hey, buddy, just thanks for getting me back in the league.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I said, uh, he goes, Why did you want to fight me?
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Like, because that's why they brought me back.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Because you were being an asshole again before me.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Until then.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: But I the question I had for you was you had to fight Chaser.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: When I fought Proby, he was much bigger than me and he was fucking tough.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: So I'm trying to hurt him.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I got a feeling when you're fighting Chaser, you're not trying to rip his head off.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, hell no.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see, that's what I thought.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: Better yet, there was no preordained peace.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: The last thing, we went out for dinner before.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: I'm renting his house.
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: We were hanging out.
- 17:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, the thought had never even crossed the table.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: Meaning that we weren't talking about it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: It wasn't even there wasn't even a sniff of it.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_04: Long story short, in the game, I had fought uh Mark Jansen's earlier in the game, broke his cheekbone.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: So kind of in, you know, of course.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, but but so he kind of embarrassed the team there.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: And then I was running around a little bit, but I wasn't looking to chase Chase.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: I was just playing my game, right?
- 17:38SPEAKER_04: And then uh Chaser went after Courtney.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: No, went after Bear, uh, Murray Barron.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: And, you know, trying to stir things up for his team.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: And I got out and we're lining up against each other.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: And he goes, uh, let's go.
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: And I go, I was like, let's go.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: He goes, Yeah, let's go.
- 17:55SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, fuck.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: He goes, This is my and I Chase was winding me up.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: He goes, This is my arena.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: I go, motherfucker, check your emblem.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: I said, Yeah, check the emblem on your foot, check your emblem.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: I I got the blues thing.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: And so we're yapping back and forth.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: And I'm still at this point not willing to drop my gloves.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: But I but in retrospect, after hearing his view, I should have done it quicker, only because in his view, and I didn't understand his view.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: I didn't understand, Twister.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: You fucking embarrassed uh Mark, you broke his cheekbone, you're running around.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: I'm going to get Bear, you know, to do something.
- 18:26SPEAKER_04: And then Keenan sends me out to deal with you, to deal with Chaser.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: But I wasn't, I wasn't out there to deal with Chaser.
- 18:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, it wasn't even crossing my mind.
- 18:34SPEAKER_04: I just thought he was going to settle it down.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: But in Chaser's mind, you're right, that's what was happening.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: I didn't recognize it.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: I know now in retrospect, I realized why Keenan put me out there.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: At that point, I wasn't even registering.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: I'm like, bro, they're not going to do that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: But he forced the issue.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: And he said, all right, let's go.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: We dropped the gloves on.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: They're still halfway in it until he buggy whips me.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: Motherfucker.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: He buggy whips me, and I go, All right, we're in it.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: And we start going.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: And here's the thing.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: But were you throwing hard?
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: No, not to kill.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: Not to send it.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: That's my point.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: But I'm not not to kill.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Not to kill.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: There's a difference.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: You know as well as I do.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: The fight to kill versus, you know, you can throw a punch and you have you have ill intent.
- 19:18SPEAKER_04: You have ill intent and you are measuring it and you're calculating it because it wasn't a whole bunch of you were looking for that outlet where I'm going to hurt you.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: That wasn't the gig.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: Now don't, hey, everybody out there, this was not no WWF WWF.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: Staged fight.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: This was not staged, and it was real.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: It was as real as real can get.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: But the ill intent on both of our sides, now different for Chaser because he had to fight full out.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: Jesus, I won't weigh the guy.
- 19:46SPEAKER_04: I was playing at 250, 255 pounds.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: I put 235 in the program.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: But when I thought here's the thing, I accidentally put they put me in a 245 or 250, my real weight.
- 19:58SPEAKER_04: When they so somebody from the media went and gathered our stats and they put it in the program, and I'm not getting any action.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: I'm like, oh god, 250.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: I went right to the drop that down to 235 because I wasn't getting any action, right?
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: So I had realistically played.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Well, do you think it's that or the knocking people up?
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Well, the same as you, though.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: There's a combination of the two, all right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: You there, everybody knew who you were.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: I was still trying to establish.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: I was I was always on the heels of Joey Kosher.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: The hardest punch in the game, I was always on your heels.
- 20:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, you were the legend, you were the guy who had the punch.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: You were guy, you were knocking guys out, and you had a lineage of doing it from the minors to oh my God.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: Worst.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: The worst is who's the guy you knocked down the minors and just.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: And when you end up with a Jim Playfair.
- 20:41SPEAKER_04: Oh my God.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: Dude, dude, and then you came back.
- 20:45SPEAKER_04: A good thing you got called up because you got Dan Green in your hands, for Christ's sakes.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: If you hadn't got called up, you would have lost your arm.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Yep, they said that.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: But I mean, there's no doubt about it.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: But that was on the heels of that, you come up and you're destroying guys.
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: And it wasn't destroyed.
- 20:57SPEAKER_04: You're shorts, all your fights were short.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: Everyone was short.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: Not where not many were lived long.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: And it's because of a punch.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: So I was always living on your heels.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: With that said, meaning, I mean, there's Joey Kosher and there's Tony Twist.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: But you had years in front of me, and you were killing guys like consistently.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: When we went into that fight, when I went to the fight with Chaser, that was not on my mind.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: It was I was fighting hard.
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I just think you wanted to fight for your team.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: You're not fighting for yourself at that point.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: Fighting for the team.
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: And don't get me wrong, team comes first.
- 21:31SPEAKER_04: Always.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Always.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: You're playing for the emblem.
- 21:34SPEAKER_04: I don't care what you say.
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: If you're holding, if you're not fighting to win, I was fighting the win, but I was not fighting to destroy.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: You were fighting to destroy, and you should have, because you were looking for a job.
- 21:45SPEAKER_04: You had to get yourself a job.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: And Bobby, he just thought it was another day in the game.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: He's about to be a bad one.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 21:54SPEAKER_04: But I think it's hilarious that he didn't figure it out.
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: I said, come on.
- 21:57SPEAKER_04: You're writing a book 15 years later and you You'd already told him, run around, go get busy, get run around.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: And he goes, because I need a job.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: I don't think that registered.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: He's like, hey, fucking Joey wants me over there and kill something.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: I'm a good dog.
- 22:09SPEAKER_04: I'm a good dog.
- 22:09SPEAKER_04: I'm a good dog.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: He literally would forget or just not even like, why'd you do that?
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Reading.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: His precedent was Joey told me to go out there.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: I'm a good dog.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: I'm a good dude.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: I'm a good dog.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: That is so true.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: We're gonna take a break here, but I'm gonna do you guys a favor and I'm gonna ask these guys when we come back who are the guys that you fought with ill intention that you were trying to kill?
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: We're gloves off, Forcer's coat, party.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Nice Guardian Network.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: See you real soon.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Hey everybody, welcome back to the fifth annual Joe Coaster Foundation for Children Golf Outing.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you to our friends at Anheuser Busch for supplying the beer.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: We're getting ready to watch the Lions win their first Super Bowl this year, drinking the official beer, Bud Light.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: But today is about golf, great friends, and raising money for charity.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Cheers to everyone and thank you, Bud Light.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: Welcome back.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: To gloves off, Forces Code, part of the Ice Guardian Network.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: I like the name Hardy.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I like the name.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Joey Coaster, the one and only Tony R twist.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: Don't forget it.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: The R.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: We were talking before about fighting, and Joey was talking about fighting Proby and you were talking about fighting Chase and how it ended, and it was, you know, doing the job, right?
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Doing the job for whatever reason.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: But um you were also mentioning too, and I I know Joey's, and I want him to tell us because I've asked him this question so many times.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Did you ever fight mad or did you ever, you know, fight like angry?
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: You're gonna do it for the team, but there's more to it.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Obviously, mine is well documented.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Claude Lemieux and Claude Lemieux.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Yep, absolutely.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: But God rest in peace.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: God rest rest in peace.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: God rest in peace.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that uh I didn't fight mad very often, but uh I guess one time was in uh in Detroit, Minnesota's coming to town, and they got this young, tough guy that's going in, they play in Kalamazoo.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So he's going through all the new uh Detroit papers, talking about he's coming in, he's cleaning house in Detroit, he's gonna beat up the whole Red Wings and he's gonna kill me.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: So now I got like two days of reading this shit.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm getting mad.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm I'm ready.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: First chance I get out there, I get with him.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: And I like I said, I've never fought that mad.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: I don't, I think I might have gone just a little bit up top, and I hit him so many times.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: You destroyed him.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: This was so bad.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: And but I I didn't feel bad at all.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Why would you?
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I loved every second of it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Him going off the ice, bleeding was.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised you didn't knock him out.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: Like you're seriously.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: I tried.
- 24:47SPEAKER_04: I know, but tell me how the you had a thick skull because I saw the fight and I'm going, what the how do you not go down?
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: He didn't.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: And he was a tough guy.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: He was.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: So you fought him a few bunch of times too.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So Lincoln and I fought in Spokane and Juniors, and it was a great tilt.
- 25:01SPEAKER_04: Both of us got eyes shut, whatever.
- 25:03SPEAKER_04: And we back then, or still back then, you got the West, you know, over here, then you got uh the WHL over here in central Canada.
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: We only saw each other twice, yeah, back to back.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: Comes to Saskatoon, and it's all built up in the papers because you know, he's there, I'm there.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: Fuck, I get fucking, I get, I didn't, I didn't win.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: I didn't lose, but it looked ridiculous.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: I mean, he worked me over, and I was pissed.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: Motherfucker, I chased him on the bus.
- 25:27SPEAKER_04: I was so mad I chased him on the bus.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: I was fucking living.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: Was that the only time you chased anybody on the bus?
- 25:32SPEAKER_04: No, I chased Gino Loja too.
- 25:34SPEAKER_04: Uh because he jumped me in the miners and I chased him.
- 25:37SPEAKER_04: Uh so we we ended up uh we ended up waiting because he was he ended up getting drafted.
- 25:43SPEAKER_04: He spent the first the first little bit in uh in uh the with the North Stars organization, then he got sent down to Kalama Zoo with the second years.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: He may have had interest, but we never saw him.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: So we're in the zoo.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: No, he the zoo comes to town.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: Now the place is packed.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, with the the Carver Arena may have fit, you know, 8,000.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: There's 12 million.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: Oh, goddamn rights.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: You know, they people are asking me.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: I go, yeah, it's on.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: So before I could get at him, Chaser ends up fighting Link, right?
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: And he does a good job.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: Because he saw him.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: And again, I and so he's pissed because you know he got cut over the eye, but he still did, he didn't get knocked out.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: He did a good job, he didn't win the fight, and he was bitter.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: He was in the fucking dressing room, but that's your fucking job.
- 26:24SPEAKER_04: I said, Well, fucking give me a chance to do it, you fucker.
- 26:27SPEAKER_04: So in between periods, he's getting sewed up and because I hadn't had a chance on the ice.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: Very next shift that we're on the ice together, I'm on D, he's on D.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: Get right over, right in front of the penny box.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: We drop gloves, we start trading.
- 26:41SPEAKER_04: And it was, I wasn't mad, but I was upset.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: I was more pissed at him than I was at Link.
- 26:47SPEAKER_04: I know, seriously, I was like, Motherfuck, you think I'm fucking avoiding this shit?
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: That was in my med.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: I wasn't mad at him, I was mad at him for fucking thinking I was that's what it is.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: And I, you know, and I knocked him, his helmet went this way, he went this way, sat in his helmet, he's fucked up.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's not good.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: We go to the penalty box, he's drinking his helmet, and it's broke, like it's broke, like split.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: Tay opens up the door and he throws it at the trainer, and I go, We got one more.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: And he goes, Fuck, we don't, we don't got one more.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: And that was that was the night he threw the TV out the freaking window at the hotel.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: No, that was NPO.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: You threw the hot the window, the TV out of the hotel.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: Oh second floor, he couldn't open the window.
- 27:25SPEAKER_04: Took me out the twister and couldn't handle it.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: And Chaser and I actually went out for him for a little bit, and he says, Hey, we're gonna go out and you know, go somewhere else.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: He was Darren McPherson.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: I remember who had bomber.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: And I said, No, we're not going out with you two ass clowns, that's not happening.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: And they went out and got boozed up, and that's when he got through through the thing.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: I was I didn't fight Matt.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: It wasn't it wasn't I was mad at him, wasn't mad at the player.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: The only one, the other time I always had the mentality of this if you're fighting angry, you're not thinking because you're going, you've already gone to a low form because you're not performing.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: You got to be ready, you gotta be eager.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: But if you're fighting mad, you've you're the anger will get you to a point, but it'll also, if things get fucking shitty, you don't your head's not working.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: When I fought Razor, and Razor and I've talked about it, when he played in Buffalo, I played in Quebec.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: And I and granted, you know, I know why he didn't fight me.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: I got one shit the game, right?
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: So in the beginning, I would play on both, you know, we go to Buffalo, we played in a ton.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: We go to I'd play in Quebec and play in Buffalo, and I go after me, wouldn't fight.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: Well, why would he?
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: I get one shit the game.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: He's playing a regular shift.
- 28:34SPEAKER_04: And then they realized having last change in Buffalo, I didn't, I wasn't playing anymore.
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: So I'd have to train and you know, ride the bike.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: And pizza, their trainer, was was the uh the guy who brought the bike and we'd eaten, you know, fun and whatever.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: And he knew what he knew what was going on.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: So he came back.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: They come into uh St.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: Louis and uh Razor just fought Francois Larue.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: So Pizza comes, he goes, Razor's ready for you.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: And I go, no, he's not, he goes, he fought with LaRue, he did a great job, he's ready for it.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: I go, fucking ain't ready for him.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: I bet you 20 bucks I knock him the fuck out.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: You know, I bet you I knock him the fuck out.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: Okay, first shift on.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Now, this is what pissed me off about the whole thing.
- 29:15SPEAKER_04: Razor tells a different story, but he wanted to fight.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Don't he did.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: He was he wanted it.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: So it was him and Barnaby, and Barnaby's on my side.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: They switch up.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: And I'm thinking, and this is what I'm thinking, motherfucker, what the ball's on you, motherfucker.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: You've been thinking all this time.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: Now he plays it off like he had to switch up.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: He was, and I didn't press the issue, but I'm in his face, in everything, he was confident that he was gonna do well, and that was what pissed me off.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Is all this, that's what made me mad.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that not the fight, but how brazen, because that's to me was like that.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Was like I'm a piece of shit.
- 29:51SPEAKER_04: Like you're disrespecting.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: That's what got me.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: And you saw the end result of that.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Fuck it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: And the end result was here, this is the best.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: We're in the penalty box, it's not the best.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: Don't get me wrong, the best is after the game.
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: He comes, and I was having a motorcycle ride that year, and he's in the penalty box.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: He says, Is it bad?
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: I go, it's not good.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: And when he sneezed, his face fell because it broke his orbits.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: When it fell, he goes, Is it bad?
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: I go, Oh, Jesus, fuck, next shift.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: You got to get to the uh penalty box or get out of here.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: After the game, pizza comes running into the dressing room.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: Ray, where's Twister?
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Ray Twister, where's Twister?
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: And I go, What's up, buddy?
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: He goes, Usually 20 bucks.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: Don't say a word.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: I said, keep your money.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: I go, he goes, I'll lose my job.
- 30:32SPEAKER_04: I, you know, I organized this, I you know what it, but I said, Pizza, not a fucking word.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: I said, keep your money.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: That was the funny.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: And I didn't say a word.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: I did not say a word until uh that was like four or five years after we retired.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: We did a show in Toronto, and I said, Razor, I guess I can tell you.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: He goes, I already know pizza told me.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: You know what's funny about that, which which it totally relates back to, is and talked about when Lemieux this in November, the second fight that we had off the opening face-off or whatever, when he lined up and switched sides and lined up against me, and and everybody said, he switched sides to you?
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: He switched sides to me, and I took it the exact same.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Like how can you not say nothing?
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: I would and this is sort of after, and I said everything that would get me canceled, and every derogatory racial French like thing like this.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: And I remember, and and I was like so aghast that that oh, you're gonna come over here, and like I still didn't think it was gonna do anything.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: It's the puck drops, and of course, Drapes wins it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I look like this, and he just boom unloads on me.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: And I and I remember thinking, good, he's gonna fight this time, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: But I was so before that stance there, like that sort of like like for whatever reason, like this that same sort of fucking doesn't I get through you?
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: There's like a chill, like like something of that disrespect to the like, what are you gonna do?
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: Like I felt the same way when I'm watching Proby and Domey.
- 32:07SPEAKER_04: I had no respect for that.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: I you know, I just like hold on, motherfucker.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: This whole this and this, and still Stevie on the bench after the second flight.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, and I love both those guys.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: I I do too.
- 32:19SPEAKER_04: Ty was just a young at the time, and he was trying to make an answer.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: No, I'm not doing disrespect during that time.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: When I saw that, I'm going, really?
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not just that.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: That Proby said, I can only imagine the pinball on his head.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Well, you can really tell, like bringing that up to whatever, where like Proby, and you know, this is that you might get him like sort of the first, but but he locked in for that second don't show up.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: Like, where it's like we're talking about him not paying attention, but when he paid attention and whatever else, like you you tell the story that like Ty's in the room, like and Proby was like the bear, like he's a moll you and you said that like Ty's got like a rock head and and whatever else, but you said he had more ice bags on his head from welts and whatever, like he hit him 55 times, he would never stop.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: We talk about yeah, we talk about pound for pound, we talk about chaser, yeah, Ty, pound for pound.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: He could take a bleeding and Wendell, yeah.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: Oh, well no, but Wendell, Wendell was always giving it, he very sounds like.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: But he was but pretty much through like he was 250.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: God damn.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Speaking of Wendell, tell us a little bit about Saskatoon days, because I know you come in after we did, and you talked to Killer yesterday about it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: We uh we're talking, we've here's us.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: We're filling in, chasing me, killer.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: We're we're filling in shoes we can't fill.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: We can't.
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, you guys were gone a couple years.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: You'd already said Wendell went to Toronto, he's beating the fuck out of everybody.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: You're in the minor league, fucking beating the shit out of people.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: We're trying to fill your shoes.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was uh, I mean, granted, that was you guys probably had the toughest team that Saskatoon's ever ever seen.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: Brownie.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: I mean talking about the softball team or other people.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: No, we're talking about the play.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: Brownie, you, Wendell, Daryl Stanley.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: Those four, that's they're all heavyweights, every one of them.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: But we came in on the on the heels of that, trying to, you know, establish ourselves, and we did a good job, but not to that's not to that.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: You guys were tough.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: We were, but you guys had four legitimate.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: You go through one, you got to go through four.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, Jesus, you know, Brownie's six foot five, you know, and he the lefty.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: You're what he was the best.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: You were 16.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: Well, you were playing, so you and Brownie got picked off the same team, weren't you?
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Yorkton.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: Yorkton.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: You were both playing in Yorkton, and you were 16, and he was 17 or 18.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: 18.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: You got picked off because you two were just destroying guys in Yorkton.
- 34:42SPEAKER_04: So when you got pulled out the Saskatoon, you were the youngster of the two, but quickly was he was my big brother.
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 34:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, talk about a great uh great piece.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: You two were just you know, then you catapult Wendell in front of it, and then and Daryl Stanley, you know, talk about Wendell having a free run.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: Talk about him.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: How comfortable did that guy feel?
- 35:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, holy shit, no wonder he was a first-round draft pick.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: He had skills to be you, and of course, he being as freaking thick skullled as he was, he just he won, he wanted to fight.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: Why would you want to fight?
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: First overall pick.
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: You've got all those other guys.
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: Why are you?
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: But no, no, I'm still gonna do it.
- 35:18SPEAKER_04: Good lord.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: He always wanted to fight Proby.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Did Proby instigate that, do you think?
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Or was it just Wendell?
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I know Wendell.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Well, I think it would be Wendell.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: And Wendell did so well in all those fights.
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: He did, he did very well, and you know, and you say 185 pounds, but just barrel gut, just all his strength came from here.
- 35:38SPEAKER_04: Just good old farm boy stuff.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Well, the way he shoots the puck.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: I mean it's fucking.
- 35:42SPEAKER_04: Still shoots it that way.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: Those are the guys that scare you, those are the guys that you think.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: That's why whenever you prepare, now, of course, Wendell was already out there, you know, as being one of those guys, but there's there's a few guys, few sleepers in the league that you think, well, if that happens, you know, I'm not talking about, I'm not talking about um McClellan, not uh uh Ebonson Eskels, but I'm talking about McClellan and Calgary.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: Calgary.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: Oh, big man, tough man.
- 36:11SPEAKER_04: Dude, he didn't fight very often, but when he did, Ryan McClellan?
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Brian, Dave Richter.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: Dave Richter, another one didn't fight a whole bunch.
- 36:18SPEAKER_04: Brian was tougher than Dave.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: And Brian, when he fighting play fair.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Oh, well, yeah.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Did Larry ever go after you after he had killed his brother?
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: He tried to in LA, and uh Harold Snap stepped in and and broke it up before he got to me.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: Thank God.
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: Because he was a monster, yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: They were two monsters.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, going back to your original question.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: That was fun.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: You know, we were on the heels of the toughest team in the freaking game in Saskatoon.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: We we rode that train, we rode it all the way through every other team in the in the game.
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: You know, every it can be played in in PA.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was every it was without, we just knew we were gonna fight.
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: Didn't know when, but it was every single game, every single game.
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: And it was it was fun, it was it was fun.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: That's back, you know.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, I didn't lose sleep.
- 37:03SPEAKER_04: I know we didn't.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: It was just yay, let's go.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Like into the mind, like my my question is is is there do you have do you have like favorite fights or like either because of of the situation or or ones that are memorable?
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: Like there's there's so many.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, I we used I used to tell a story, right, growing up and being younger than you guys, or whatever.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: The reason that I graduated or had an A in history class is because our teacher was so cool that all you fuck fighters and tough guys in the late 90s or late 80s, 90s, he would relate history, right, to to tough guys.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: So, like, you know, for one, I always remember Shane Sparta Chirla.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: You know, like chainsaw, oh dude, I I ate about 11 of those one night fast as they come both.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Chainsaw Chirla for right, like guys like that in yourself as as to whatever else.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: But is there like, did you have memorable ones?
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Like for I'll say for me, and I just saw him say the clip is like I'm most proud of getting the two biggest rats that played our game, like in Carp and Matthew Barnaby.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Because I I hit him so hard, and he tells me I split him for 30 in Colorado to whatever, and just to get your hands on some of those guys, like that.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: But but that was my job.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: Like, I was for because those guys could play and they played more, and like you said, but just like you said, how Chaser was telling you that your job was to do that, that was sort of my job to to leave it ever off.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: So I always like that smile that part of what you had, he had a roll of urinals in his front teeth.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: That smile, and you just wanted to piss on him.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: It was like a roll of urinals, just right that smile was like in his mouth, and the guys that just don't like so.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: I wonder is there any guys I you know, so here's Todd Ewan and I had a and I love I love Todd.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: Todd was off the ice, we got along famously.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: I mean, famously because we coached our kids together.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah the kindest, nicest man you could ever meet.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Just he was a he was a pleasure.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: But when he played, our riff started in my first training camp.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: And it started, and I told the story that I cut to the chase.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: We had team meetings, and Brian Sutter says only three or four things.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: He goes, If you're a fighter, fight, if you're a winger, score, if you're a sentiment score, you stop goals, and we're going down the elevators.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: Me, Chaser, uh, Herb Braglan, Todd Ewan, uh Perry Turnbull, and we're all going on the elevator together.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: And I looked at uh Ewan, I go, We're going tomorrow.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: And he goes, I don't have to fight you.
- 39:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, yes, you do.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: You're gonna have to fight Chase.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: The after goes, Who's this wee guy?
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: You got a mouse in your pocket?
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: Because you know, you got you got Herbie and everybody.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: You know, he was laughing because he fought Percy and Herbie.
- 39:57SPEAKER_04: But, anyways, that first that first exhibition we went out, he was uh boy, he wasn't gonna fight me until I came out and I, you know, pretty much left my skit and the stake because it was Brian's in the badge.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: I did.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: So I said to Brian, I said the Brian, I said, You don't mind if I leave my shit here?
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: Whatever you want to do.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: So I went out to seven heights and I did the chicken.
- 40:18SPEAKER_04: You know, we went and we fought, and it was a good fight.
- 40:20SPEAKER_04: No, there was no winner, no discreet loser, but we go to the he's got it, I got a cut over my eye, and his hands, his hands hurt, and we're in the same, he's on one training table on the other.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: And the guy's doing the the trainer goes, Well, you're gonna have to get stitches.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: I said, No, put we're going back out there, fight again.
- 40:37SPEAKER_04: And Todd's going, Oh, my hands are.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: I go, I don't care.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: I'm going back out there, you got to get stitched.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: I said, Either you, I'm gonna put hockey tape on this, or you're gonna put sutures or you're gonna put a uh something on it.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: Well, he I just took the piece of hockey tape, put it on it, went back out and finished uh finished the piece, right?
- 40:52SPEAKER_04: And Todd didn't he didn't make the ice again.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: And that was that's where it all started, right?
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: You know, of course, the next the next exhibition game, you could not, and the next training camp day, you couldn't get in because everybody had blown it up.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: But it it escalated to a point to the next training camp, to when he got traded to Montreal.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: So my first game, my very first game after getting traded, Todd had gotten traded to Montreal.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: I got traded to Quebec.
- 41:17SPEAKER_04: And Marcel Abu, who's the owner of the team, comes over and so and Marcel, big rotun freaking lawyer, and he comes over, he goes, I understand, you know, you've you're uh a tough guy.
- 41:27SPEAKER_04: He says, Yeah, I hate that Shane Corsen.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Then I go, Okay, so you're passing me a note saying that's who you want.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: So he feels like that's pretty much what he did.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Very first game.
- 41:37SPEAKER_04: So I'm chasing Corse around because Marcel Abu, I don't know him.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: Course goes, I'm fighting you, you animal.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: And Todd comes out and I'm trying to fight him, but he won't fight until I'm coming up the and you watch the video.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: I'm coming out of our end, and he drops his gloves from behind me and suckers me, hits me right in the lid, and I oh, and then I lit him up.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: And we, I mean, lit him up.
- 42:01SPEAKER_04: We go to the penalty box, and I'm bitter.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: That's one of those guys that like you, every time we played against that, I went after him.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: We fought in San Jose and we're going toe to toe.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: He hits me in the lid, I go backwards, and I'm still like this.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: I'm on the ground.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: You can watch with this.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: I had, I don't think I missed the stride.
- 42:20SPEAKER_04: I think I don't miss the punch on the way down.
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: I'm doing this.
- 42:23SPEAKER_04: And after the after the fight, he's got a cut over his eye, and I'm going, you know, doing this because that was the one guy.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: But granted, when I met him off the ice, what a beautiful man.
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: Beautiful man.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: You guys were fighting for a spot on the blues back then.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: No, I was.
- 42:40SPEAKER_04: He already had it.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: But you were taking it.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: I wanted it.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: You know, you know the gig.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: I never you have you turned anybody down who wanted that?
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: No.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: That spot, no.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: Neither did I.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: If you know if you got the sack, I'm in it.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: You know, there's plenty of guys, Darren Langdon, for example, when he was in New York, and they came to town and the coach had told him and Churl not to fight me.
- 42:59SPEAKER_04: And I and it was regrets, was there.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was embarrassing.
- 43:03SPEAKER_04: It really was because you know, Chainsaw didn't want to get it.
- 43:06SPEAKER_04: He Chainsaw didn't want to, but he had the excuse.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: Finally, Darren stepped off the bench.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: He goes, Somebody's got to do it.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: Because I skated by the bench.
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: I said, Which one of you motherfuckers are going to do this?
- 43:15SPEAKER_04: Because it's embarrassing.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: And Darren came out.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: You know, and he ran that guy.
- 43:19SPEAKER_04: Great dude.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: We got the penalty box.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Very strategic following.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, dude, he was one of them, one of the best technical, tie-up, great guy and tough because he could take it.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: And he'd stand right in there.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: And we got the penalty box, and I said, Good for you, kid.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: I said, I don't want to fight you again.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: I said, You're proud of you.
- 43:37SPEAKER_04: And everything just kind of settled down because I had I did the job I had to do because Gretz was in town and he stood up and I don't want to fight that guy again because he was way out of class and he did a great job.
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: Hats off to him.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: It was really, I was impressed.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: That's awesome.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: That's kind of part of the old enforcer's code right there.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: It is 100%.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: That is the enforcer's code.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna take one last quick break before we get to Joey's favorite part.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Called Last Call here.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: Gloves Off Enforcers Code.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: But I have to uh I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up uh a situation of me and Mr.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Twist and how Mr.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Bowman saved my life if he remembers one time.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: We'll get to it when we get back here.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Gloves off.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Football is back, and something big is coming on September 2nd.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: DraftKing game day arrives.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: And don't forget, DraftKings is live in all 50 states.

- 45:14SPEAKER_03: Uh Forster Code, part of the Ice Guardian Network here with Tony Twist.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: What a great conversation.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: And you just talked about the code and back in the day with Detroit and you know Detroit and St.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: Louis of how it would be done.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: The one thing I wanted to bring up, if you don't you you remember this, and I think it was it was before Joey got there.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: And I think it was for some reason, might have been like 95 or 96, and I think it was exhibition.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: But you for some reason, and I think it was more of an accident, you didn't do it on purpose, but you and Konstantinov came together.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: I remember and you high sticked them and cut like it was it wasn't on purpose.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: It wasn't on purpose.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: No, I knew it wasn't on purpose, but I was the closest guy to you, and I was like, oh fuck.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: And and so I dropped my gloves with Twister, and I think I grabbed his right arm with both hands, right?
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: And I and has strong ears and throw me around, but I'd slipped the left, being a lefty, and I hit him, and I know because he was like, You motherfucker.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: Like this, as he's like bounced me on the end, and he didn't get it, didn't get a good shot on me or whatever, and it goes.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: And and I knew he knew why I was like respectfully, like he wasn't like mad, but he was mad because I'd fucking you did, you hit me with the fucking left hand.
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: I hit him with the left hand, this yeah, and it was like this.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: So so fast forward, and I remember this clear as day.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: We're in St.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: Louis, and it's you're in the robbery or whatever, and it's in front of our bench, right?
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: And the one thing that like Scotty had with me was like, you do whatever you want until I tell you not to not to do it ever again.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: And we were lined up, and I think it's the only time he did that.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: And Twister comes out and lines up right against me, and he fucking gives me a shot.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: He goes, It's time, kid.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, fuck.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden, Scotty Bowman steps onto the and he leans over and he goes, McCarty, McCarty.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: If you fight him, you'll never play another ship for me in your life.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, listen, and I look at Tristan, I heard it.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: And I go, I go, you heard that, right?
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: And Trister goes, and and this is like the love and the the the fear, the respect, whatever.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: And he looks at me and goes, Yeah, I did.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: And he sort of like let it in like that sort of code, and I just remember, like, oh my god.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: I don't think I've heard his name.
- 47:37SPEAKER_04: And aggressive, like just you knew that was what he was gonna do.
- 47:42SPEAKER_04: Well, I I didn't know that he was gonna do it.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: I knew you were coming off.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: No, but the conviction in his voice was like No, no, it was like you knew too that it was like motherfucker, are you serious?
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: Like, I wasn't kidding.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: No, like in the I was.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: I'm not responsible for you losing your job.
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: What the hell?
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: I always would say that to be regardless.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: I said the biggest game I ever had wasn't from you or Pro B or whatever, it was from Scottie Bowman.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: All my ill intent went out the window when I wrote down and go.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: Thank God you were so like such a like YouTube honestly.
- 48:14SPEAKER_03: We're so like the epitome of what an enforcer like should be not only meant to his team, the players, but the code.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: When we're talking about the code, I mean you guys were code writers to it, where people don't understand how important that you are in the gravitas to the game and to the way that a team operates.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: It wasn't how many shifts we took or how many times we fought.
- 48:42SPEAKER_04: It was like Al McGinnis said, he said that about me, and I'm sure somebody's I'm sure plenty have said it about you.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: I'd rather have a cardboard cutout of kosher or twist on the bench because I get the extra second.
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Because it's the nuclear missile that nobody wants to launch.
- 48:57SPEAKER_04: If this one gets launched, eventually this one's gonna get launched, but not before this one destroys a country.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: Right, that's the truth.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: In the anticipation of death, yeah.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: It kept everybody honest, meaning you sitting on the bench and and it like it was so it was so awesome.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: Like when you look back, because I used to always sit near the other team's bench, as you used to sit near the other team's bench, and you sort of could that's so you could chirp, right?
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: Got or or or right to to to hear and you hear some of the funniest shit, and guys just chirping each other, but it would get heated, and and a lot of the times, you know, when they go to commercial, whatever, when you see there's all these diplomatic negotiations going on, don't touch him, I won't touch him.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Like you touched him, I'm going after him.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: You're fucking dead.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna kill you like that.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: And it did, and it didn't matter.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: And and I think that you know that that's some.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: There was a story, and I can't remember who told it, and I think it was in Detroit.
- 49:58SPEAKER_04: Somebody was going Joey Sachs, and somebody had said another, you know, tough player would said something to Sack.
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: I wasn't on the team.
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: Avery Sean Avery.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: You fucking you fucking touch him, you're dead.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: Hold on.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: Is that not respect?
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, tell me that story because I wouldn't.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: So so I was on the back.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: So Sean Avery, and we all we all know and love Sean Avery, but he could push the line or whatever, and and it's on the bench, and I'm sitting beside Holly and Shani, and Sean Avery just comes off, and Joe Sack's like, he gets kicked out of the draw, so he's in front of our bench, and Avery's standing up going, Fuck you, Zack.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna come get you.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Whatever, like this.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: He's in mid sense, and Holly grabs him.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: He pulls him down and goes, We do not talk to Mr.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Sackett that way.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Which which you would appreciate this so much, right?
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: When I say the rivalry between Colorado and Detroit and the hatred, whatever, you know what the best part was?
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: Their king, Sackett, our king Iserman, we're always on the thrones, and the rest of us peons were just slightly because that is the greatest, as you know, a soldier in the army.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: What a great story!
- 51:06SPEAKER_04: That right there, and I and I I knew the story, and I thought you were on the band.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: That is wholly that that's the code, man.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: That's where we pleased ourselves, where we gave where opportunity would have knocked, where chaos could have ensued, where the code was, well, chaos is not going to ensue because if you touch him, somebody else is going down somewhere else.
- 51:31SPEAKER_04: Better yet, it came from the same team.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: You don't disrespect Mr.
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: Sackett because that's not how the game's played.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: He is the king.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: Leave him alone.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 51:41SPEAKER_04: That's such a great story.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's the that's the epitome of the code right there.
- 51:46SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 51:46SPEAKER_04: I love that you love it.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: I think we all know.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: We all know.
- 51:51SPEAKER_03: Now, before we wrap up, this is Joey's uh favorite part of the show.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: It's called Last Call because he gets to crack a butt late.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Um uh but Twister, I think that you know, and I and I'll ask Joey this too, and and chime in.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: But is there something, and Joey brought this up, that you would tell your younger Tony Twist, like maybe starting out in the minors or starting out or whatever, is there something that you wish you would have got earlier?
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: You could have changed or like to maybe go out to some of the young kids.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: What's that?
- 52:23SPEAKER_03: Right, no kidding.
- 52:25SPEAKER_04: Disney stock back then shit.
- 52:27SPEAKER_04: There is, and I didn't learn that till Bobby Plager became our coach, you know.
- 52:32SPEAKER_04: And Bobby, even after when Bobby gave this piece of information to me, I didn't completely digest till a couple years later.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: And in retrospect, it was so profound and so simple that I didn't get my arms around it.
- 52:45SPEAKER_04: He had said to me, you know, it's not how many times you fight Twister, it's what it's not, it's who you fight and when you fight them.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: And the games that you don't fight are the games that you've already won.
- 52:56SPEAKER_04: And I didn't get my arms around that.
- 52:58SPEAKER_04: I didn't totally, because in the in up to that point, anybody and everybody.
- 53:02SPEAKER_04: And I was happy to do it, meaning that's what I was going to look for.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: I wanted to every time I was on the ice.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: He pulled me aside, he goes, You're sure your career's gonna be short if this is what you're doing, because you can't do it every day.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: Your hands are gonna get beat up, you're gonna hurt yourself.
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: I said, and he he also said that by doing it less, you're you're doing more because you're becoming that guy that nobody wants to mess.
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: So instead of you just going in, once you do it one or two times, you do it on if you do it first during one game and it's and it's in the first period, everybody's breathing, the other side's breathing.
- 53:36SPEAKER_04: He's not gonna fight a second time.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: We said, Oh damn right to fight a second time.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: He goes, No, but you can't fight a second time every game.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: Right, this is not gonna happen.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: That piece of information developed and and manifested into yeah, you're right, I don't have to fight every game.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: Back to one, you know, cardboard cutout to you know, not even playing a shift or two shifts, but you know, feeling shitty about myself, but then thinking about Bobby said, my I did my job because nobody fucked around.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: That's the one piece.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: And so, to your point, right?
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: My mine was Scotty Bowman.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: When I came back in '96 to play for the wings, before I even went on the ice, he called me in his office and he says, I don't want you fighting.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: I'm like, why did you get me?
- 54:17SPEAKER_01: He says, 'Cause I want to make sure that missile is sitting on the bench.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: And I never I never realized that in my nine years prior, right?
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: But it was like a weight was lifted.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: I could go play the game.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: I knew I'd still have to fight, right?
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: But I didn't have to go look for the fight.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: Isn't that awesome?
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: It was a fun way to play the game, right?
- 54:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:35SPEAKER_04: That that that and you know what?
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: You'd fight no less or no more.
- 54:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: No more or no less.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: And you got the job done better.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: You got the job done better without the sacrifice of your body.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: That's the one thing I wish would have uh I held on quicker, you know, or learned quicker.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Because that was so profound.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: Because up to that point, it was just anybody and everybody.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: And after it started, yeah, you're right.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Don't have to do it every time.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: You know, if you're if you're you were more powerful if you've already established you now, don't misunderstand.
- 55:02SPEAKER_04: You have to establish yourself to get to this.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: This is not a position.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: You just come to the thing, I'm the guy.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: That's not gonna happen.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: You have to earn the reputation, establish yourself.
- 55:12SPEAKER_04: But once you're established, that's when you can take that.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: And the other thing was is that you don't go fight the other heavyweight right away.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: That's stupid.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you go make a point with somebody else.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: And that was the one thing that you know from the beginning I didn't get either.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna go out and beat the shit out of him.
- 55:27SPEAKER_04: But he had nothing to do with it.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: Somebody ran your best player.
- 55:30SPEAKER_04: Go take this, take it out, and somebody you guys will meet.
- 55:32SPEAKER_04: That was the other thing.
- 55:33SPEAKER_04: And I that took a little time to learn.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: That's that's such awesome advice.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: How about uh real quick?
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: Are there you watch the game and are there any guys these days?
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: I know it's not.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: I don't watch the game at all.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: No, no, I lost interest.
- 55:46SPEAKER_04: Boys are not when I say this, I really honestly mean it.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: I lost interest in the game, right?
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: Up to the point when we won the Stanley Cup here in St.
- 55:54SPEAKER_04: Louis in 2019.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: I hadn't been watching until Chief took over.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: Because at that point, the players, I was not impressed how they played.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: The coaching was wrong, the guys weren't playing for themselves.
- 56:04SPEAKER_04: Chief comes over, and all of a sudden you could see guys were playing for each other and playing for Chief, but more for each other because he made them play for each other.
- 56:13SPEAKER_04: But in thereafter, I just saw less and less of that playing for the emblem rather than everybody's playing for the name playton.
- 56:21SPEAKER_04: I lost interest, you know, for the for five or six years, and uh, I and and also the game got so much better.
- 56:27SPEAKER_04: Guys are so much more talented.
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: And but us as enforcers, we worked ourselves out of the league.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: The the league didn't do it, we worked ourselves because uh all of a sudden the guys that were doing the job weren't doing the job right, they're out and fighting each other.
- 56:40SPEAKER_04: No, dude, you don't fight each other every game.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: You gotta make a if somebody does something wrong, you go take it, take your vengeance on somebody else first, make it known.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: You you puck with my guy, I'm gonna go take yours.
- 56:50SPEAKER_04: That was lost, and we allowed that as a group of enforcers to fight each other rather than making a point before then again.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: And oh, you know, and I couldn't skate in this thing.
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: I don't know if Joey might be able to.
- 57:02SPEAKER_04: In my best, in my best day, I couldn't pick up pucks.
- 57:05SPEAKER_04: You know, I couldn't pick up pucks for Christ's sakes.
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: I'd be like freaking Roberts, the assistant coach with Velcro skates.
- 57:13SPEAKER_04: That's what I'd look like.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Scotty.
- 57:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that'd be all the best of them.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: Had it.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Well, what a great time here on Gloves Off.
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: You can check out Tony Twist and his band of characters on the bare knuckle nation podcast.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: Make sure you do.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: What's uh one of the things?
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: Because I know you're getting real quick into like cooking and you love cooking.
- 57:32SPEAKER_04: No, I gotta I gotta cook the chip.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: Is there a favorite deck?
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: Do we have a like oh no?
- 57:37SPEAKER_04: I'm just doing everything.
- 57:38SPEAKER_04: I've gotta do everything off.
- 57:40SPEAKER_04: One of these one of them is how to cook an egg properly.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: You'd be surprised if we don't know how to cook an egg properly.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: And everybody thinks scallops is tough to do.
- 57:47SPEAKER_04: You can do scallops any any hair brain.
- 57:49SPEAKER_04: If I can do it, you can make scallops unbelievable in 20 minutes.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: That is so just a little fun, a little hell, a little fun.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: Something to turn into.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: Yes, can't thank you enough.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: This has been.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: Boys, I'm looking forward to your show.
- 58:00SPEAKER_04: I'm looking forward to you because you've got a whole plethora of great people you can attack from Detroit to Toronto to uh into your history of your guys is from wrestling to pro players to and you were talking about operators that you guys know, and that that's all about what we do, game and arena.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: And you're so relatable because every one of those guys, you're relatable because the game, damn it, is the same.
- 58:25SPEAKER_04: The game, all the experiences are the same, and your arena is gonna change and you're gonna culminate everybody together.
- 58:31SPEAKER_04: I'm looking forward to it.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: I'm looking forward to it too.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: Appreciate you, Twister, as always, uh, for all the knowledge, all the stories, and thanks, boys, and you're just a big smile.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: Like you're doing.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: It it is, it enjoys it, and thanks for not killing me, Mr.
- 58:44SPEAKER_03: No, are you kidding me?
- 58:46SPEAKER_04: We all earn a job, buddy.
- 58:47SPEAKER_04: That's absolutely thanks for the buggy whip.
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: For gloves off, enforcer code.
- 58:54SPEAKER_03: It's another another week.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: We will see you next time.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Joy culture on Damon Perry.
