- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said, Behold, I have heard
- 0:05Speaker 1: that there is corn in Egypt. Get you down thither,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and buy for us from thence, that we may live
- 0:12Speaker 1: and not die. Genesis 42.2 Heavenly Father, today I choose
- 0:19Speaker 1: to praise you, Lord, in the midst of famines, recessions,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and lack throughout the nation and in other countries, because
- 0:28Speaker 1: I know that I will not be affected. You've given
- 0:33Speaker 1: me divine strategy to experience abundance and provision. I praise you, Lord,
- 0:38Speaker 1: for the simple fact that in the economy of heaven,
- 0:41Speaker 1: there is no such thing as a recession. I declare
- 0:46Speaker 1: that as your child, you give me access to your
- 0:49Speaker 1: resources that never run out. Therefore, I will position myself
- 0:55Speaker 1: for increase. I will go to the places where your
- 0:58Speaker 1: provision and peace are in abundance. I confess that when
- 1:03Speaker 1: I come in contact with those who've wronged me, I
- 1:06Speaker 1: will not use my position of power and influence to
- 1:09Speaker 1: get revenge, but instead will use it to show grace
- 1:14Speaker 1: and forgiveness, generosity and kindness. Every good gift comes from you, God.
- 1:21Speaker 1: And with this truth, I will remind myself that I
- 1:25Speaker 1: am blessed to be a blessing. I will remind myself
- 1:30Speaker 1: that I walk through open doors because I am called
- 1:32Speaker 1: to help others walk through them. Hallelujah. I thank you, God,
- 1:37Speaker 1: that opportunities and increase are all around me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:51Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Brought to you.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Returning to Egypt. Before this story, we learned about how
- 2:12Speaker 2: Joseph waited patiently in prison. He was finally able to
- 2:16Speaker 2: interpret dreams, which eventually promoted him to be second in command.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Joseph was put in charge of preparing for the coming famine.
- 2:25Speaker 2: which would eventually spread throughout the entire land. Now we
- 2:29Speaker 2: will learn about how Joseph's brothers went to Egypt to
- 2:32Speaker 2: buy grain during that great famine. However, they were unable
- 2:36Speaker 2: to recognize Joseph. Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:47Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we learned
- 2:50Speaker 3: that Joseph was able to rise to a position of
- 2:53Speaker 3: incredible power. the second most powerful man in all of Egypt,
- 2:58Speaker 3: the prime minister. God used Joseph to interpret Pharaoh's disturbing
- 3:03Speaker 3: dreams and warn him about an upcoming seven-year famine that
- 3:07Speaker 3: would follow seven years of abundance. Joseph was then put
- 3:11Speaker 3: in charge of the plan to store grain and prepare
- 3:14Speaker 3: for the lean years. And when we catch up with
- 3:17Speaker 3: him in today's reading, the plentiful years have passed, and
- 3:20Speaker 3: under Joseph's careful guidance and governance, Food has been stored
- 3:25Speaker 3: in preparation for the famine, and now the famine comes.
- 3:30Speaker 3: We'll see how this time of great need has swept
- 3:32Speaker 3: far and wide beyond Egypt and into Canaan, where Jacob,
- 3:36Speaker 3: Joseph's father, and Jacob's sons, Joseph's brothers, were living. Joseph's
- 3:42Speaker 3: brothers will travel into the land of Egypt to beg
- 3:45Speaker 3: for help, not knowing that it was the brother whom
- 3:48Speaker 3: they had betrayed that they were their face. There's so
- 3:52Speaker 3: much to watch for in this reading. Pay close attention
- 3:56Speaker 3: to Joseph's reaction when he recognizes his brothers Reuben and
- 4:00Speaker 3: Judah and the others. Imagine how you would feel in
- 4:04Speaker 3: a situation like this. Now you are finally able to
- 4:08Speaker 3: either take revenge or show mercy. What will Joseph do
- 4:13Speaker 3: with this opportunity? Will he continue to show kindness and
- 4:17Speaker 3: integrity as he did for such a long time in captivity?
- 4:21Speaker 3: Or will bitterness get the best of him? Will he
- 4:23Speaker 3: seethe with anger and rage and bring judgment on those
- 4:27Speaker 3: who harmed him? Let's listen now to find out exactly
- 4:31Speaker 3: what happens.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Just as God had revealed through Joseph, the famine spread
- 4:36Speaker 2: like wildfire throughout the land. Blighted and desolate, farmlands became
- 4:42Speaker 2: barren and livestock starved and died. It came like a
- 4:47Speaker 2: plague and the entire countryside fell in despair. Egypt, however,
- 4:52Speaker 2: was able to withstand the fatal famine. As Joseph instructed,
- 4:57Speaker 2: one-fifth of all that was grown the past seven years
- 5:00Speaker 2: were kept safe and distributed carefully. Across the plains towards
- 5:04Speaker 2: the north, Jacob and his family hurt from the famine.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Their food had become scarce, and the family had no
- 5:11Speaker 2: choice but to look to Egypt for help. Israel looked
- 5:15Speaker 2: at his sons, doing nothing, and said,' Why do you
- 5:19Speaker 2: all look at each other?' he asked. I have heard
- 5:22Speaker 2: that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down
- 5:25Speaker 2: and buy grain for us there, so that we may
- 5:27Speaker 2: not die. So ten of Joseph's brothers journeyed south to Egypt.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But Israel did not send Benjamin, Joseph's younger brother, for
- 5:36Speaker 2: fear that he would be hurt as Joseph was. The
- 5:39Speaker 2: sons of Israel ventured forth to Egypt, not knowing they
- 5:43Speaker 2: would be coming face to face with their past sins.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Joseph was the governor over the land and oversaw all
- 5:50Speaker 2: transactions between other countries and the grain. A long line
- 5:54Speaker 2: of people stood before Joseph, pleading for food. Joseph peered
- 5:59Speaker 2: across the sea of faces and caught glimpses of his brothers.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Waves of memories began flooding back to him. Memories of
- 6:07Speaker 2: being thrown into a pit, shackled and shipped away. He
- 6:11Speaker 2: recognized them instantly, but they stood before him with no
- 6:14Speaker 2: clue of who he really was. When they stood before him,
- 6:19Speaker 2: Joseph treated them like strangers and said, Where do you
- 6:22Speaker 2: come from? He spoke with a rough voice, reeling from
- 6:25Speaker 2: the emotions of seeing his betrayers again. From the land
- 6:29Speaker 2: of Canaan to buy food, they answered in a tone
- 6:32Speaker 2: of reverence, for they were speaking to the second most
- 6:35Speaker 2: powerful man in all Egypt. They bowed before him. Instantly,
- 6:41Speaker 2: a rush of images flooded back into Joseph's mind. the
- 6:44Speaker 2: dreams he had once dreamed of his brothers bowing before
- 6:47Speaker 2: him now coming to fruition. Joseph did his best to
- 6:51Speaker 2: compose himself. You are spies, he said crossly. You will
- 6:57Speaker 2: come to see the vulnerability of the land so you
- 6:59Speaker 2: can take it, he pointed to them. They trembled at
- 7:03Speaker 2: Joseph's accusations. No, Lord, they shouted. Your servants have come
- 7:07Speaker 2: to buy food, and that is all. We are sons
- 7:10Speaker 2: of one man, and we are ten of twelve. One
- 7:12Speaker 2: brother is at home with our father, and the other
- 7:15Speaker 2: is dead. We are honest men, we promise. Joseph scoffed
- 7:19Speaker 2: at the sound of them claiming to be honest men,
- 7:22Speaker 2: knowing full well what they had done to him. Joseph
- 7:25Speaker 2: decided to test their claims by keeping them captive until
- 7:29Speaker 2: one of them brought back their youngest brother. For three
- 7:32Speaker 2: days he held them in custody. Joseph's heart ached every
- 7:36Speaker 2: moment he was in the presence of his brothers. On
- 7:40Speaker 2: the third day Joseph came to the brothers and said
- 7:42Speaker 2: to them, I fear God. Do this and I will
- 7:46Speaker 2: let you free. Let one of your brothers remain here
- 7:49Speaker 2: while the rest of you take grain to your father.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Then bring your youngest brother back to me so I
- 7:55Speaker 2: can verify your claims. The brothers did exactly as Joseph ordered.
- 8:01Speaker 2: They began packing, afraid of what would happen next. God
- 8:04Speaker 2: began to work in the hearts of the brothers. They
- 8:07Speaker 2: spoke among one another, saying, We all know why this
- 8:11Speaker 2: is happening to us. We caused our youngest brother Joseph
- 8:15Speaker 2: pain and suffering, and he begged us to show him mercy,
- 8:18Speaker 2: but we did not. Now we are being punished by
- 8:21Speaker 2: putting Benjamin at risk. Reuben, the oldest, answered them and said,
- 8:27Speaker 2: Did I not tell you to leave the boy alone?
- 8:30Speaker 2: You didn't listen. Now God has required a reckoning from
- 8:34Speaker 2: us for his blood. All the while Joseph was listening,
- 8:37Speaker 2: for they did not know that he spoke their language
- 8:40Speaker 2: because he used an interpreter. As the brothers continued packing,
- 8:44Speaker 2: Joseph turned away and wept alone. In secret he looked
- 8:49Speaker 2: to God, his heart breaking over what he was doing
- 8:52Speaker 2: to his brothers. Yet a part of him did not
- 8:54Speaker 2: trust them enough to reveal himself. Wiping away his tears,
- 8:58Speaker 2: he came back to them. He took Simon from them,
- 9:01Speaker 2: and bound him in ropes in front of his brothers.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Joseph gave orders to his servants to give his brothers
- 9:07Speaker 2: their money back in the bags of grain. He also
- 9:10Speaker 2: ordered for them to be given extra for the journey home.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Though Joseph was cross with them, he would not show
- 9:16Speaker 2: them the same cruelty they once showed him. The brothers
- 9:20Speaker 2: loaded their donkeys with grain and departed swiftly. On their
- 9:24Speaker 2: way home they discovered money was returned to them. Instead
- 9:28Speaker 2: of being glad, they trembled feeling unworthy and uneasy about
- 9:32Speaker 2: the blessing. What is God doing to us? they asked themselves.
- 9:37Speaker 2: They returned home to their father and told him everything
- 9:40Speaker 2: that had happened, and how they needed to bring Benjamin
- 9:42Speaker 2: back to Egypt to get Simon. Israel was furious at
- 9:47Speaker 2: his sons. You are stripping me of my children, he yelled.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Joseph is gone, and now Simon is gone, and you
- 9:55Speaker 2: expect me to give you Benjamin? Reuben could no longer
- 9:59Speaker 2: stand himself As the oldest, he was responsible for all
- 10:02Speaker 2: his brothers. He stood firm and said,' Kill my two
- 10:06Speaker 2: sons if I do not bring them back to you.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I will not let them fall.'' If anything would happen
- 10:13Speaker 2: to my boy, I would surely die,' Israel said, for
- 10:16Speaker 2: he had already endured so much pain from Joseph.' So
- 10:20Speaker 2: the family delayed in leaving for Egypt again. The famine
- 10:24Speaker 2: had grown more severe and Israel's family had gone through
- 10:28Speaker 2: all their grain. He gathered his sons again and said,
- 10:31Speaker 2: Go again to Egypt to buy us more food. Judah
- 10:36Speaker 2: replied saying, We were strictly warned to not come back
- 10:39Speaker 2: without Benjamin. The governor needed proof that we were not
- 10:43Speaker 2: lying and needed us to bring him back or he
- 10:46Speaker 2: would kill Simon.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Send him with me.
- 10:49Speaker 2: He will be my responsibility. Their father relented and sent
- 10:53Speaker 2: his sons with Benjamin and many gifts of honey, gum, myrrh, pistachios,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and almonds, along with double the money. So the men
- 11:02Speaker 2: took the gifts, Benjamin, and double the money as before
- 11:06Speaker 2: to stand before Joseph. When Joseph saw Benjamin with them,
- 11:10Speaker 2: he ordered his servants to prepare an extravagant feast back
- 11:13Speaker 2: at his home. When the brothers arrived to meet Joseph,
- 11:17Speaker 2: he was not present. Rather, his servant invited them into
- 11:20Speaker 2: his home. Fear overcame the brothers, for they fully expected
- 11:25Speaker 2: to be punished because they took the money back with them.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They climbed the stairs that led to Joseph's house, anxiously
- 11:32Speaker 2: wondering what would happen to them next. They expected to
- 11:35Speaker 2: walk through the doors to Joseph sitting on a throne,
- 11:38Speaker 2: ordering the guards to behead them. They finally approached the
- 11:42Speaker 2: entrance of Joseph's home, opened the doors, all to find
- 11:46Speaker 2: a royal welcome. Joseph had his servants take their coats,
- 11:50Speaker 2: wash their feet, and give them water. The brothers apologized
- 11:54Speaker 2: for taking the money back to their home. Joseph smiled
- 11:57Speaker 2: and said, Peace to you. There is no need to fear.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Your God and the God of your father put that
- 12:04Speaker 2: money back in your sacks. I received your payment. The
- 12:08Speaker 2: brothers let themselves relax, and Simon was released to be
- 12:12Speaker 2: with them. They waited for Joseph to return at noon.
- 12:16Speaker 2: and prepared their father's gifts to give him. Hours passed,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and Joseph finally returned home. The brothers immediately bowed down
- 12:24Speaker 2: to the ground when they saw him. Again the memories
- 12:27Speaker 2: of Joseph's dreams came flooding back to him. He thought
- 12:30Speaker 2: of his father, his mother, and his homeland. Joseph had
- 12:35Speaker 2: so many questions for them, yet he did not want
- 12:38Speaker 2: to let his guard down. How is your father? he
- 12:42Speaker 2: asked while swishing a cup of wine in his hand.
- 12:45Speaker 2: The old man you spoke of before, is he well?
- 12:48Speaker 2: Joseph did his best to not seem too concerned. They
- 12:52Speaker 2: bowed their heads still, not answering. Joseph saw his brother Benjamin,
- 12:57Speaker 2: his mother's son. Is this the youngest brother you spoke of?
- 13:01Speaker 2: he asked. He looked into Benjamin's eyes. He had his
- 13:05Speaker 2: mother's eyes.
- 13:07Speaker 3: How he missed her.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He missed his father. He missed Canaan. Joseph could feel
- 13:13Speaker 2: himself losing his composure. Tears began streaming down his stoic face.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Joseph excused himself and wept in his room. Anguish, anger, bitterness, love,
- 13:25Speaker 2: all these emotions overcame him. Joseph washed his face and
- 13:29Speaker 2: came out again. Controlling himself again, he clapped to his
- 13:33Speaker 2: servants and said, Serve the food. And immediately an entire
- 13:36Speaker 2: feast was brought out before them. He served every brother,
- 13:40Speaker 2: though he did not eat with them. Yet he served
- 13:43Speaker 2: Benjamin five times the amount as the others. Joseph wanted
- 13:47Speaker 2: to see how the brothers reacted to favoritism towards the
- 13:50Speaker 2: younger brother. Have they changed? Joseph must have thought to himself.
- 13:55Speaker 2: They ate, drank, and were married together. Joseph then sent
- 13:59Speaker 2: them on their way with their grain. However, he put
- 14:02Speaker 2: his silver cup in Benjamin's sack so that he might
- 14:05Speaker 2: trick them later. As the brothers packed up and began leaving,
- 14:09Speaker 2: Joseph ran out to them. One of you was stolen
- 14:12Speaker 2: from me, he shouted. Why have you repaid my hospitality
- 14:16Speaker 2: with evil? Joseph acted as the angry king, willing to
- 14:20Speaker 2: behead anyone who defied him. He watched as his brothers
- 14:24Speaker 2: trembled with fear. Joseph took a tagger and walked towards
- 14:28Speaker 2: them slowly, starting with the oldest son, working his way
- 14:31Speaker 2: down to the youngest. He tore apart their sacks, looking
- 14:34Speaker 2: for the silver cup. When he came to Benjamin, he
- 14:38Speaker 2: found the He turned to his brothers and said, You
- 14:42Speaker 2: may all go your way in peace, but Benjamin will
- 14:45Speaker 2: be my slave forever. The brothers tore their clothes and
- 14:50Speaker 2: bowed before Joseph. Please take me instead, all the brothers
- 14:54Speaker 2: began to shout. They were willing to take the place
- 14:57Speaker 2: of their brother so he could return back to his father.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Joseph welled up at the sight of his brothers. They
- 15:04Speaker 2: had truly changed. Now they were willing to lay down
- 15:08Speaker 2: their own lives... so their youngest brother could be saved.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Joseph couldn't hold in his feelings any longer.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It's been a very long 13 years since his brothers
- 15:21Speaker 3: threw Joseph into the pit and betrayed him, selling him
- 15:25Speaker 3: as a slave into Egypt. But God in his providence
- 15:29Speaker 3: and perfect plan blessed and protected Joseph. And he has
- 15:33Speaker 3: now become a very powerful official in Egypt, next to
- 15:36Speaker 3: Pharaoh himself. Pharaoh's right-hand man, the prime minister of the nation.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And as we just learned in the story, after seven
- 15:45Speaker 3: years of prosperity, the whole land was then hit with
- 15:48Speaker 3: seven years of scarcity and hunger. It happened just as
- 15:52Speaker 3: God said it would. This catastrophe of famine struck not
- 15:56Speaker 3: only Egypt, but surrounding nations, including Canaan, where Joseph's family lived.
- 16:02Speaker 3: And these nations all turned to Egypt to find the
- 16:05Speaker 3: food they desperately needed. So Jacob's sons, Joseph's brothers, journeyed
- 16:10Speaker 3: to purchase provisions for their families. Jacob, still hurting, grieving
- 16:16Speaker 3: from the loss of Joseph, had not allowed the youngest son, Benjamin,
- 16:19Speaker 3: to make this journey. He held him back because he
- 16:22Speaker 3: did not want harm to befall him. Was he simply
- 16:26Speaker 3: being protective or did he sense, did he somehow know
- 16:29Speaker 3: that these other sons had played a part in Joseph's demise?
- 16:34Speaker 3: Whatever the reason, it's clear that 13 years have not
- 16:37Speaker 3: been enough time to blow away the darkness and the
- 16:40Speaker 3: sadness in Joseph's disappearance from the family that still shadowed
- 16:44Speaker 3: Jacob's heart. Knowing full well what happened, the brothers' guilt
- 16:48Speaker 3: for what they had done weighed heavily on them, coloring
- 16:51Speaker 3: every moment of their lives. They were living in guilt.
- 16:55Speaker 3: You see, there's no way getting away from sin and
- 16:58Speaker 3: the effect and consequences of sin. Sin will catch up
- 17:02Speaker 3: with you. When they arrive in Egypt and go before Joseph,
- 17:06Speaker 3: the governor, they bow down before him and Joseph recognizes them.
- 17:11Speaker 3: They do not recognize him. So as a test, he
- 17:14Speaker 3: accuses them of being spies. Of course, they claim to
- 17:18Speaker 3: be honest men, but they knew from experience they were
- 17:21Speaker 3: not honest men. They were very dishonest, very deceitful. Joseph
- 17:27Speaker 3: had a choice. He could now enact vengeance or he
- 17:31Speaker 3: could once again see his father and his youngest brother again.
- 17:36Speaker 3: So Joseph chooses the latter and gives his brother a test.
- 17:41Speaker 3: One of them will stay behind in security while the
- 17:43Speaker 3: others return home and bring back the youngest brother to
- 17:46Speaker 3: prove that their claims are true. Now there's a lesson
- 17:49Speaker 3: here about dealing with those who have betrayed you, wronged you,
- 17:52Speaker 3: disappoint you. While vengeance is not ours to give, a
- 17:56Speaker 3: cautious approach to reconciliation is always a good thing, especially
- 18:02Speaker 3: when the wrong has been so wrong. Trust must be
- 18:06Speaker 3: earned again even if there has been forgiveness. Before they leave,
- 18:11Speaker 3: we already see Joseph's heart softening towards his brothers as
- 18:15Speaker 3: he returns to them without their knowledge, the money that
- 18:18Speaker 3: they had given for the food that they would take
- 18:19Speaker 3: back home. Leaving Simeon behind, the brothers return home and
- 18:24Speaker 3: give a report. Jacob is not at first willing to
- 18:27Speaker 3: let Benjamin, his beloved youngest son, make the trip to Egypt.
- 18:32Speaker 3: But he knew the food that they now had would
- 18:34Speaker 3: soon run out and they must go back to Egypt
- 18:36Speaker 3: and take Benjamin with them. Jacob relents, regretfully. Upon their return,
- 18:43Speaker 3: Joseph provides a feast, a big party. It's an opportunity
- 18:47Speaker 3: to observe the brothers more closely, especially to see how
- 18:50Speaker 3: they are treating Benjamin. Joseph goes to great length to
- 18:54Speaker 3: show Benjamin very special treatment so he can watch how
- 18:57Speaker 3: the other brothers react. Joseph is in a struggle. He's
- 19:02Speaker 3: struggling between the kindness that he's giving towards his brothers
- 19:05Speaker 3: and yet still thinking, still scheming how he can find
- 19:09Speaker 3: vengeance and how he can keep Benjamin for himself. Hiding
- 19:14Speaker 3: his cup in Benjamin's pack, he accuses the men of stealing.
- 19:18Speaker 3: When the cup is found, he says Benjamin must be
- 19:22Speaker 3: his slave forever and they must return home. The brothers
- 19:25Speaker 3: cannot bear to think of returning to Jacob without Benjamin.
- 19:29Speaker 3: They plead for him to be released. Finally, Joseph's brother
- 19:34Speaker 3: Judah speaks up and offers himself as a slave in
- 19:38Speaker 3: Benjamin's place. This appears to be a changed man. And
- 19:43Speaker 3: this realization breaks Joseph. The next time we're going to
- 19:48Speaker 3: see how he responds and how God in his faithfulness
- 19:51Speaker 3: brings about reconciliation between long lost brothers. Dear Lord, we
- 19:57Speaker 3: know that you can bring healing even in the most
- 20:00Speaker 3: broken situation. Help us to reflect upon your grace and
- 20:04Speaker 3: mercy and how much you have forgiven us and that
- 20:08Speaker 3: we can actually forgive others when they have wronged us,
- 20:10Speaker 3: as you have taught us. Thank you for your faithfulness
- 20:13Speaker 3: always in our lives. In Christ's name, amen. Thank you
