- 2:46In top news, five years ago, 23andMe was soaring high with a valuation of $6 billion, acclaimed
- 2:54by celebrities and popular culture.
- 2:57Today it's a different story.
- 2:59The company's value has plummeted by 98%, teetering on the edge of Nasdaq delisting.
- 3:06This decline reflects a significant shift from its early success, where millions use
- 3:11their DNA testing kits to explore ancestry and health.
- 3:15However, the company has been unable to sustain profitability, leading to staff cuts and financial
- 3:21struggles.
- 3:22CEO, Anne Woodsicki, remains determined, aiming to transform 23andMe into a comprehensive
- 3:30healthcare enterprise, developing drugs and providing medical care.
- 3:35Despite these ambitious plans, the journey ahead is fraught with challenges, including
- 3:39a dire need for fresh capital and overcoming the inherent limitations of their DNA testing
- 3:45business model.
- 3:49Now let's talk science.
- 3:50New research contradicts the long-held belief that insects are attracted to light.
- 3:56Instead, artificial lights disrupt their natural navigation.
- 4:01Insects usually use light as a cue for orientation, with the sky being the brightest source.
- 4:07Artificial lights, however, cause confusion.
- 4:10Researchers from Imperial College London and other institutions observed this phenomenon
- 4:15through motion capture techniques and high-resolution cameras.
- 4:19They found that insects like dragonflies just circle lights, or even crash, when disoriented
- 4:25by upward-facing lights.
- 4:28The study published in Nature Communications highlights how artificial lighting alters
- 4:33insect behavior, a shift from the traditional view of simple attraction to light.
- 4:40In business news, the 2025 Toyota Camry, launching in 2024, introduces a bold change as it transitions
- 4:49exclusively to hybrid models.
- 4:52This ninth-generation midsize sedan features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine paired
- 4:59with electric motors.
- 5:01It offers a choice between front-wheel drive with 225 horsepower and all-wheel drive, which
- 5:08increases power to 232 horsepower.
- 5:12The Camry's design borrows elements from the Toyota Crown, featuring new front headlights,
- 5:18a refreshed cabin with a steering wheel and console design similar to the Crown, and an
- 5:23updated infotainment system.
- 5:26It comes in four trims, each offering unique features and styling.
- 5:31Pricing details are pending, but the current hybrid model ranges from around $30,000 to
- 5:36just over $35,000.
- 5:39In crypto, Bitcoin is around $42,000, Ethereum is at $2,250, and Dogecoin is about $0.08.
- 5:56Now onto sports.
- 5:58Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback, is poised to redefine the role of sports announcers.
- 6:04His signing by Fox, initially met with skepticism, is now confirmed, with Brady set to call games
- 6:11this fall, and possibly even next year's Super Bowl.
- 6:16This move is part of Fox's strategy to innovate in talent development, exemplified by their
- 6:21willingness to let go of announcer Greg Olson in favor of Brady.
- 6:26Fox's ambitious approach combines nurturing internal talent, like Olson, while investing
- 6:32heavily in superstars like Brady.
- 6:35Brady's transition from football to the broadcast booth marks a significant shift
- 6:40in sports television, mirroring past transitions of sports icons like Joe Montana and Frank
- 6:46Gifford.
- 6:48Can you believe it?
- 6:49There were no Boston sports last night.
- 6:52But tonight, in the NBA, the Celtics are at home to take on LeBron James and the Lakers.
- 6:58The Seas are nearly at full strength for their game tonight.
- 7:02Luke Cornette, their backup center, is doubtful due to a hamstring injury.
- 7:07This could mark his third consecutive absence since getting injured against the Clippers.
- 7:11However, the team receives a boost, with Al Horford returning from a sprained neck.
- 7:17Horford's comeback is timely, as the Celtics can really use him for this one.
- 7:23In other news, poor Zingas, back from a sprained ankle, contributed significantly in the recent
- 7:29win over the Pacers.
- 7:31The Lakers, meanwhile, face uncertainty with LeBron, and Anthony Davis, both questionable
- 7:37for the game.
- 7:41Moving on to a more local vibe.
