- 0:07Good afternoon everybody, this is Vince Gulley speaking to you from Crosley Field in Cincinnati with Jerry Doggett and Al Helper on hand as the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cincinnati Redlegs are about ready to wrap up their three game series this afternoon.
- 0:21Today's game like all the Dodger games this year will be brought to you by Lucky Stripes, the best-pasting cigarette you ever smoked. It's made by the American Tobacco Company and tobacco is our middle name.
- 0:34And the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, brewers of Schaeffer Beer, America's oldest lager beer.
- 0:41the Dodgers and Redlegs playing a single game today to wrap up their three game series. This will be meeting number 17, they've spread it down the middle, each side having won eight of the preceding 16, and each side having won four of eight played here, and four of the eight played back east, so they're about as even as you can be.
- 0:59In today's ball game it will be Johnny Padres for Brooklyn and Brooks Lawrence for Cincinnati.
- 1:05Lawrence making his 20th start has completed eight and appeared 12 times in relief. His record 11 wins and six defeats. He is 2-0 against Brooklyn and lifetime six wins and five defeats.
- 1:17He appeared, you might remember, briefly pitching the ninth inning of Friday night's game in relief.
- 1:22Johnny Padres for Brooklyn making his 16th start has completed seven ball games and appeared three times in relief.
- 1:29John, eight wins and three defeats. He is 2-1 against Cincinnati and lifetime eight and four.
- 1:35Johnny has had an exceptional success this year on the road. He lost his first road game to the Pittsburgh Pirates and since then has had five complete road game victories, allowing only one run in his last 45 innings on the road.
- 1:51He fit shutout to the Polar Ground, then won here 6-1 at Cincinnati when it barely hit a home run in the second inning of that game, and he then followed with three consecutive road shutouts at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and you remember that terrific ball game the other night when he bested St. Louis 1-0.
- 2:08So Padres, as he warms up right now, has a string of 34 consecutive scoreless innings on the road, since allowing that home run by Bailey on May the 21st.
- 2:18Johnny, by the way, leads the majors in shutouts with five. Jim Wilson had four, came very close to number five, but Billy Pierce had to help him out.
- 2:27For Dodger lineup today, Charlie Neal opens up at shortstop and Jim Gilliam at second base.
- 2:34Duke Snyder batting third in center field. the field has dried out considerably since yesterday, so there is no danger now of loose topsoil giving way and Snyder's tricky knee being re-injured, so he's back in the lineup hitting third.
- 2:48Gil Hodges not feeling too well, but nevertheless the big fella's going to stay at first base. He had a tooth removed and since that time a little reaction to it.
- 2:56His hand bothers him a little bit and his legs are a little tired, but as Gil said, with a kind of a cheaper string, he'll be there at first. So Hodges in the cleanup spot at first base.
- 3:06the Red Legs take the field right now before a big crowd. We should have another crowd close to 30,000 today.
- 3:13Sandy Amoros will be in left field batting fifth. Carl Perillo, who had a single and a home run yesterday, will be in right field.
- 3:21Roy Campanella, the catcher, batting seventh. Peewee Reese will be at third base. Randy Jackson, it's conceivable, could have played today.
- 3:30However, he twisted his knee slightly yesterday and they're always afraid that he might seriously injure it, so they'll give him a day off. However, he could appear as a pinch hitter.
- 3:38So Reese instead will be at third base batting eighth. And the pitcher, Johnny Padreau.
- 3:44For Cincinnati, Johnny Temple opens up at second base and Gus Bell in center field. Don Hoke will hit third and play third base.
- 3:52George Crowe in the cleanup spot at first. We'll continue with the Red Leg lineup in a few moments, but right now our national anthem.
- 4:00the Red Legs.
- 4:30the Red Legs.
- 4:45the Red Legs.
- 5:00the Red Legs.
- 5:26To continue with the Cincinnati lineup, George Crowe in the cleanup spot at first, then Frank Robinson in left field.
- 5:33Ed Bailey, the catcher. Wally Post is dropped to the seventh spot in right field.
- 5:39Roy McMillan, the shortstop, and the pitcher, Brooks Lawn. 11 wins and 6 defeats. 2-0 against Brooklyn at lifetime 6-5.
- 5:48the four umpires for this series, as they rotate today, it'll be Stan Landis back of the plate. Bill Baker on the line at first. Frank Dascoli umpiring at second.
- 5:58And Frank Secori on the line back at third. A big day of baseball today. the Giants and the Milwaukee Braves are playing a double header.
- 6:06In the first game, it'll be Johnny Antonelli, 9-10 against Bob Kilbritt, 3-2. Pittsburgh and St. Louis, Vernon Law and Vaughn McDaniel.
- 6:15And the Cardinals lead 1-0 at the end of an inning and a half. Philadelphia and Chicago, Kurt Simmons and Tom Poholski, no score at the end of two innings.
- 6:24All those games, double headers. In the American League, Tigers and Yankees playing 2.
- 6:29Boitak against Larson, it's a 1-1 tie at the end of an inning and a half. No score at the end of an inning and a half. Chicago and Baltimore, Harshman and O'Dell.
- 6:38the Red Sox lead 1-0 at the end of an inning and a half on Ted Williams' home run. And it's 3-2 Kansas City over Washington at the end of 6-1 half innings in the first of two.
- 6:48So you're right up to date. Charlie Neal coming up. Lucky Strike blowing smoke rings to you from Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
- 6:55And for Lucky Strike and the play-by-play, here's Jerry Doggett.
- 6:58Thanks, Ben. And hi, everyone. Charlie Neal stepping in and our ballgame about to get set underway. It'll be Neal with a 2-63 batting average, seven home runs and 30 runs batted in.
- 7:10Brooks Lawrence, the big right-hander, checks his sign to wind up in the first pitch of the game. Swung on a fly ball at the left field.
- 7:16Robertson moves over to his left hand, holds it down for the out. So Neal, first ball hitting, lines up to Frank Robinson in left field. One up, one down. And the batter, Junior Gilliam.
- 7:29Junior had a long dry spell before he got the base hit yesterday. Batting average is 2-50, one home run, 23 runs batted in.
- 7:37Brooks Lawrence, 11-6 against the league and 2-0 this year against the Dodgers, lifetime 6-5. Here's the pitch. Fast ball is in for a strike.
- 7:48And Gilliam now steps out complaining a bit to umpire Stan Landis. Landis takes his mask off and is talking to Gilliam.
- 8:00So Junior rubs a handful of dirt in his hands. Still talking to Landis. Didn't like the call on that pitch.
- 8:08Beyond that hitter, Duke Schmader, and down in the hole, Gill Hodges.
- 8:13Third baseman, Don Holt, playing in on the grass. Lawrence winds and here's the pitch. Strike two, curve ball at the knees and it's nothing to the Gilliam.
- 8:25Right, sunshiny day here in Cincinnati. Temperature in the 80s. Possibly will go as high as 90 degrees today.
- 8:33And a fine crowd. Gilliam leans back from a high curve and it's ball one, strike two.
- 8:40And still coming in. the sun deck, the bleacher area in right field is jammed back.
- 8:46Still trying to find seats out there. Gilliam swings a fly ball, loops into short right field coming on at post. He's there and he makes the grab for the out. Two away.
- 8:57So Gilliam starts to post in short right field, two up and two down and the batter will be Duke Schmader.
- 9:02Duke hitting 279 with 44 home runs and 57 runs batted in.
- 9:10Schmader of course did not play yesterday because of the soft ground in the outfield and the tricky knees.
- 9:17But Duke back in there today after the sunshine yesterday and today, dried out the playing field very well.
- 9:25Lawrence into the wind up, here's his pitch. High fly ball on the left field. Robinson now backing up to the edge of the curve, goes up halfway, waits and makes the catch for the out to retire the side.
- 9:37So the Dodgers out on three fly balls to the left, one to right and the side retired in order. No runs, no hits, no errors and then left on.
- 9:45And at the end of a happening of play, it's Brooklyn nothing and the Red Legs coming to bat.
- 9:51Now with the words for Lucky Strike, here's Ben.
- 9:53Well, middle of the first friends and that means a short pause before the Red Legs come up to bat.
- 9:58Means we have time to to wax eloquence about Lucky's and that's an easy assignment. Let me assure you, the friends there's no smoke like a Lucky's.
- 10:07A Lucky's all cigarette, all fine tobacco.
- 10:10Tobacco that starts off right by being mild and naturally good tasting.
- 10:15Tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 10:18Cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 10:21Forget the mood, friends. Enjoy yourselves. Light up a Lucky's and discover the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 10:29For the taste that you like, light up a Lucky's Strike.
- 10:38You'll say a Lucky's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 10:52Well, the Dodgers have suddenly erupted a little bit in the dugout. Perhaps no doubt after Gillian disputed a call on a strike of the plate.
- 11:00Jake Fiddler hollered and now Walter Austin out in defense of his first base coach has been given the boost by a plate umpire Stan Landis.
- 11:09And we haven't even gotten to the last of the first inning. A towel comes sailing out of the Dodger dugout.
- 11:15But Austin, no doubt about it, has been chased by a plate umpire Stan Landis.
- 11:20To get back into it now, remember Gillian at the plate took a strike and hollered about it.
- 11:25the inning ended. the Dodgers began to holler from the dugout. Landis World walked towards the dugout and tried to quiet them.
- 11:32Austin came out in defense, I believe, of Jake Fiddler.
- 11:36And Austin apparently got so carried away in talking to Landis that he said something untoward and Stan Landis gave him the boost.
- 11:44And there, sitting quietly in a box seat, leaning on the railing, is Walter Austin's father, who right now you can imagine sees all of this one-sided.
- 11:53So Walter Austin thrown out of the ballgame with his dad no more than 60 feet away.
- 11:58And Austin now stops and gives his batting card to Billy Herman.
- 12:02And it has been Don Newcomb who has been given the boost along with Walter Austin.
- 12:07So Newcomb, who has a very loud voice and has Don apparently hollering from the bench with chase.
- 12:13And Austin, shot outside to protect his foot here and instead has been given the boot himself.
- 12:19So before the Dodgers take the field in the bottom of the first inning, they lose their manager and Don Newcomb.
- 12:26Newcomb is not scheduled to fetch until Tuesday, but the Dodgers conceivably could have used him as their left-handed penchitter.
- 12:33So the pressure of the pen and raise has erupted before we can even get to the last of the first inning.
- 12:39the Dodgers have both manager Walter Austin and Don Newcomb kicked out of the ballgame.
- 12:45Well, here we go again.
- 12:49Fasten your seatbelts to the bottom of the first inning. No score.
- 12:52Johnny Temple coming up and here's Jerry.
- 12:54Johnny Podros now talking with Celia Reese and this one about ready to go now in the last half of the first inning.
- 13:00And it's been a toll to the rhubarb right here in the first.
- 13:03Stan Landis putting the thumb on Newcomb and Walter Austin.
- 13:09Here's Johnny Temple about now hitting 286.
- 13:13First pitch is in for a strike. Curveball caught the inside corner to the right-hand batter.
- 13:18Johnny Podros with an exceptional record on the road this year.
- 13:26Right through Reese, a third base. Temple around first, takes the second.
- 13:30Now Zamoros makes his throw there and it's not in time.
- 13:33Temple is on a second base on a two-base set.
- 13:37A hard smash with right by Peewee Reese, a third base.
- 13:42Now Temple is on with a double down the left field line and the batter will be Gus Bell.
- 13:51Johnny Temple at second base.
- 13:55Bell is back with a 295 batting average, 12 home runs and 52 runs batted in.
- 14:06Podros now checks second, delivers to Bell.
- 14:09Curveball is over for a strike.
- 14:15Podros has a string of 34 consecutive scoreless innings on the road since allowing a home run to Bailey here at Cincinnati on May the 21st.
- 14:29Here's the look. Podros now delivers to the plate.
- 14:33A run and miss for a strike and the count to Gus Bell is nothing in two.
- 14:40No score. We're in the last half of the first inning. the Red Legs have Johnny Temple on second base and nobody else.
- 14:47Bell is back. Don Holt to follow and then George Crowe.
- 14:51There is all even one winner piece.
- 14:54Dodgers won yesterday 5-3. the Red Legs won Friday night 6-5 and 11 innings.
- 15:01Here's the look. the 0-2 pitch.
- 15:04Flyball to the left field. Sandy Amoros backs up a step, now moves a little bit toward the line and makes the catch for the up.
- 15:11So Bell skies to Amoros in left field and up now will be Don Holt.
- 15:15Holt getting 287, 14 home runs and 59 runs batted in.
- 15:22One out, one on. Temple at second base with a leadoff double for the Red Legs in the last half of the first inning. No score.
- 15:33Don Holt hitting in the number three spot in the Red Leg batting order.
- 15:41Johnny Podros now checks the runner and delivers to the plate.
- 15:44Breaking ball to the knees and it's ball one. One ball, no strikes on Holt.
- 16:00Podros again ready. Checks Temple off second base. the pitch is high on inside.
- 16:06Ball two. Holt started to lean into the pitch and then came back out of there, did not break the wrist and it's a ball two count.
- 16:13Gilliam trying to keep a short holder on Temple to second base. Keeps moving in and out.
- 16:23Ball two, no strikes on Don Holt. Campanella flashes out of time.
- 16:31Outfield swung a little bit to the left against the right hand batter and now Holt steps out and Podros and Campanella will talk it over.
- 16:38Want to make sure on the signs perhaps.
- 16:43So Campy goes out to meet Johnny halfway to the mound.
- 16:47At third grease, Neil is at short, Gilliam at second and Hodges at first base.
- 16:52Amarolson left, Snyder in center and Perlman was in right. Campanella catching and Podros doing the 15.
- 17:01Two ball, no strike count on Don Holt.
- 17:04Podros out of the structure of the pitch. Change up and bounce down the third baseline. Great backhand stop by Reese but he has no play.
- 17:11And Holt is on and at second base holding on there is Johnny Temple.
- 17:16A hard bounding ball at the third baseline that Reese backhanded on the line, knocked down and then jumped on the ball and fell down and had no play.
- 17:24And it goes to the base up for Don Holt.
- 17:29So the Red Legs have two on and George Crowe coming to bat. Crowe hitting 3-0-1.
- 17:3423 home runs and 69 runs batted in.
- 17:39And now the Dodger infield goes to double play and steps and slides around a bit to the right side.
- 17:44Reese will play in the third and fairly wide of the bag.
- 17:48Neil shading second base and Gilliam and Hodges deep on the right side.
- 17:54Here's the pitch to Crowe. the pass ball is at the knee for a strike.
- 17:58the Red Legs have two on, one out and there's no score in the last half of the first inning.
- 18:08Johnny Podros looking for a sign. Ready to pitch to George Crowe.
- 18:14Johnny out of the stretch. Here's the pitch. Crowe swings and taps one up the first baseline foul.
- 18:23Frank McCormick makes the play on the ball in the first base coaching line and the counter, Crowe, is strike two.
- 18:30Podros in 111 innings so far this year has struck out 65 and walked just 25.
- 18:37Earned run average is 2.76.
- 18:44Lucky strike, popping a trail this afternoon from Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
- 18:49the Red Legs with a first inning prep going, no score, two on, one out.
- 18:53Podros ready, here's the pitch. Crowe swings and misses, strike three.
- 18:58So George Crowe is out on strike, strikeout number one for Podros.
- 19:03To a way down the batter is Frank Robinson.
- 19:06Frank hitting 310 has 14 home runs and 44 runs batted in.
- 19:18Last of the first inning, two out, two on. Temple is second and Don Hulkin.
- 19:24Podros checks a sign. Eyes to runners, here's the pitch.
- 19:28Ground ball bounced back to the middle for a base hit.
- 19:31Temple turns in to score. Here's the show, back to second base from the Red Legs lead, one to nothing.
- 19:44And so far Johnny Podros, a long string on the road, is broken.
- 19:48He has gone 34 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.
- 19:54And now the Red Legs punch on the run on Frank Robinson's ground ball, single up the middle.
- 19:58On the play, Don Hulk raced around to third. Temple came across the score.
- 20:02the batter will be the catcher, Ed Bailey.
- 20:13Bailey is hitting 292, has 15 home runs and 39 runs batted in.
- 20:19Left-hander against left-hander now with runners at first and third, two out.
- 20:22Curve ball bounced down one big hop to Hodges and the side is retired as Gill walks the ball to the bag.
- 20:27And so for the Red Legs in the first inning, one run on three base hits.
- 20:32No errors and they left two men on.
- 20:35So at the end of one inning of play, it's Cincinnati one and the Dodgers nothing.
- 20:40Well, here's Ben.
- 20:43Okay, friends, when does a batter call a pitcher an iron mic?
- 20:46Well, I'm sure you got the idea on that one, of course.
- 20:48It's when the pitcher is having an off day, when he's easier to hit than an iron mic, the pitching machine.
- 20:53But you know, after the ballgame, both pitcher and batter have the same name for a genuine smoking enjoyment, for a genuine cigarette.
- 21:01And that, of course, is lucky strikes.
- 21:03And why luckies? Well, here's why.
- 21:06It's because it's all cigarettes, all fine tobacco, mild, naturally good tasting tobacco that's posted to taste even better, cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 21:18Have you tried a lucky lately? You'll say it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 21:25Well, Frank Robinson who made their last out yesterday with a man at second base in the ninth, he struck out against LeBine,
- 21:32comes up in the first inning today and gets a base hit to drive in the run. So at the end of one inning, replace Cincinnati 1 and Brooklyn nothing.
- 21:39Dodgers ready to come up with Hodges leading the parade and right back to Jerry.
- 21:43Gill hitting 307 has 14 home runs including one yesterday and has had 16 runs battered in in his last 15 ball games.
- 21:52And Gill now has two behind Snyder in the RBI column for the Dodgers. Duke has 57.
- 21:59Against the Redlegs, Hodges has an average of 350 for the year.
- 22:03This is the 17th meeting and the clubs are all even. 4-4 here, 4-4 in the East, and of course 8-8 on the year.
- 22:13the Dodgers against the Western clubs on the road this year are 14-12 and since the all-star game of 1-12 and lost five,
- 22:20the Redlegs during the same span of 1-10 and lost six.
- 22:27Brooks Lawrence now sets the pitch to Gill Hodges.
- 22:32Here's the windup and down it comes. Curveball is in for a strike.
- 22:38In case you joined us late, manager Walt Alston and pitcher Don Newcomb were given an evil by umpire Stan Landon
- 22:46before the bottom of the first inning got underway.
- 22:50Hodges swings at the high foul coming back and out of play in the upper deck. And it's strike two to Hodges.
- 22:59A near capacity crowd here again at Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
- 23:04In five games on this road trip, the Dodgers have drawn 131,000 fans.
- 23:13Here's the windup and the 0-2 pitch. Curve is outside, ball one, one and two on Hodges.
- 23:20Top of the second, Redlegs lead one to nothing.
- 23:24Playing in the second inning, New York nothing and Milwaukee nothing.
- 23:28In the fourth, Philadelphia and Chicago no score.
- 23:32Here's the pitch to Gill. Fastball is grounded out to the left side.
- 23:35Holtz cuts in front of McMillan and the ball goes right through.
- 23:39McMillan Holtz trying to go wide and in front of McMillan for the play on the ground ball, couldn't field it.
- 23:44And with McMillan's view blocked by Holtz, the ball went on through for a base hit to left field.
- 23:50So Hodges getting one through the left side hole.
- 23:54Had Holtz stayed away, McMillan more than likely would have made the play on the ball.
- 23:59But Holtz of course had to cut over.
- 24:01Any ball they can get through, he's got to make a play on.
- 24:04But then he blocked McMillan's view and the ball went right through.
- 24:07Here's Amoros at bat now and he takes the pitch on the corner for a strike.
- 24:11Sandy hitting 295.
- 24:14Has five home runs and 19 runs batted in.
- 24:18And in 14 games as a starter hitting 356.
- 24:21So Amoros has been one of the hot hitters for the Dodgers.
- 24:24One on here in the second with nobody out.
- 24:27Kerrball is popped into short right field.
- 24:30Wally Post coming on, he's there now and makes the catch for the out.
- 24:35So Amoros flies out to Wally Post, one away.
- 24:40Hodges holding his first base and here's Carl Ferraro.
- 24:44Carl yesterday had a home run which proved to be the decisive margin.
- 24:48It came with a man on and the Dodgers won 5-3.
- 24:56Hodges at first base with one out in the second inning and the Redlegs won, the Dodgers nothing.
- 25:04the Redlegs infield now playing double play-dips against Perillo.
- 25:09Lawrence out of a stretch, here's the pitch.
- 25:12the Kerrball is low and it's ball one.
- 25:221-0 count.
- 25:26And the pitch in for a strike.
- 25:31Perillo evens it up at 1-1.
- 25:35Lucky strike, toughen it to you today from Crowsley Field in Cincinnati.
- 25:42Perillo swings a big hop to third, hopes down to second for one,
- 25:45so the first double play and the crowd is just sad.
- 25:50And for the double play, a thousand luckies go along to our VA hospital at Woke Park, Pennsylvania.
- 25:57One thousand and along comes the first thousand for the double play.
- 26:01So the Dodgers go down to the top half of the second inning with no runs, one hit, no errors and one left on.
- 26:07And at the end of an inning and a half, it's Cincinnati one and Brooklyn nothing.
- 26:12Okay Vim, well here in Cincinnati it's 1-51 or 2-51 back home.
- 26:18And as we synchronize the watches, we hope that's the way you come out too.
- 26:22You know, no matter which way the hour hand on your watch is pointing,
- 26:25you can always be sure of one thing, it's light up time.
- 26:29That ever so welcome moment when you reach for a lucky and strike a match.
- 26:34Boy, there's just nothing like a lucky and the deep down smoking enjoyment of this genuine cigarette.
- 26:40A lucky is all cigarette, all fine tobacco.
- 26:43Mild, naturally good tasting tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 26:49Cleaner, fresher, smoother.
- 26:52So light up a lucky right now, you'll say it's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 26:59Redlegs have a run on three hits, the Dodgers no runs on a hit as we go to the bottom of the second inning.
- 27:04Wally post the batter and right back to Jerry.
- 27:07Post hitting 2-39, dropped down to the batting order with a left hand pitcher going.
- 27:13Despite the fact that he hits from the right side, Post has not been hitting as well as Holtz so they've kicked him around.
- 27:19the Holtz has been hitting third and Post now dropped to the number seven spot.
- 27:23McMillan on deck and Lawrence to follow.
- 27:28Wally Post has 12 home runs and 50 runs batted in.
- 27:34Here's Padra for the windup and the pitch.
- 27:37Curveball hit the inside corner, strike one.
- 27:45Redlegs lead 1-0 batting down the last half of inning number two, third game of the series.
- 27:54Audra Freddie, the windup and here it is.
- 27:56Fly ball foul off to the right, it'll come down out of play on the roof.
- 28:03Total Wally Post to strike two counts.
- 28:05Roy McMillan on deck and Brooks Lawrence to follow.
- 28:09Redlegs pick up a run in the first inning on a double by Semple.
- 28:12Infield single by Holtz and a single by Robinson.
- 28:16Here's a fastball inside and Post turns away from it.
- 28:20Ball one, one and two.
- 28:30One-two pitch, curveball tapped right back to the mound.
- 28:33An easy play for Padra.
- 28:34Turns, makes you throw the hybrids in time.
- 28:36One away.
- 28:40Here's McMillan coming on now, the Redlegs shortstop hitting 254.
- 28:47the Giants lead Milwaukee 1-0 with Milwaukee batting in the last half of the second.
- 28:52Philadelphia, Chicago no score.
- 28:54Phillies batting in the fourth.
- 28:56And the Cardinals lead Pittsburgh 1-0 with the Pirates batting in the fourth inning.
- 29:00Those are all first games of double hitters.
- 29:03the pitch down to McMillan is high and inside, ball one.
- 29:07the Dodgers and the Redlegs are the only National League clubs playing a single game.
- 29:14the fastball is in first strike and it's one ball, one strike on McMillan.
- 29:20the ball has had some great games on this road trip.
- 29:23Just typical of the National League pennant race.
- 29:29the one-one pitch.
- 29:30Foul ball off to the right, it'll be down in the stands.
- 29:38One ball, two strikes on Roy McMillan.
- 29:45When the last half of the second, the Redlegs lead 1-0.
- 29:48One out, none on.
- 29:50Toddress winds and fires. Curve ball in the dirt and it's ball two, two and two.
- 30:11Here's a pop foul coming back to the wire, out of play. Two balls, two strikes.
- 30:29Turn two. McMillan waiting with one out on the second.
- 30:35Toddress winds and changes up, a swing and a bounding ball. Wide of third and the hole is Neal. Long throw is not in time.
- 30:44So McMillan is on as he had a ground ball deep in the hole.
- 30:48the shortstop, Neal made a play on the ball but his throw was not in time.
- 30:51Hodges had to go for a high throw.
- 30:53Might have smuffed the bag but it was not in time and McMillan gets a face hit.
- 30:59So that is hit number four off Toddress and two have been of the infield variety.
- 31:04Here's the pitcher, Brooks Lawrence, coming on hitting 135. Seven base hits in 52 times at bat.
- 31:17Lawrence at bat. Reef now playing a third, playing in close should Lawrence have front instructions.
- 31:24And a play to first base but not in time. McMillan is back.
- 31:35Lawrence around the bat, back to the mound. Toddress goes to second base. In time, throw to first base. Not in time.
- 31:43So McMillan is forced as Lawrence bunched back to Toddress who wheeled and made a throw back to Charlie Neal for the fourth play.
- 31:50Not in time to get Lawrence. So there are two off with a runner at first base and Johnny Temple coming on.
- 31:58Temple doubled down the left field line and scored the run in the first inning.
- 32:01Red Lake lead is one to nothing. We're in the last half of the second inning.
- 32:07On first is Brooks Lawrence.
- 32:16Now Toddress out of a stretch delivers a curve ball on the inside corner, strike one.
- 32:25the Red Lakes one run on four hits. the Dodgers no runs on one hit.
- 32:30Last half of the second.
- 32:36the fastball is in for strike two to Johnny Temple. Nothing in two.
- 32:57Now again, Toddress ready delivers outside high and it's ball one. One and two on Johnny Temple.
- 33:06Reese, Neal, Gilliam and Hodge is on the infield. Amarillo, Snyder and Perillo on the outfield.
- 33:12Campanella catching and Toddress pitching. Johnny Temple the batter, one ball, two strikes.
- 33:17Here's the pitch. Powerball back to the wire and the count stays one and two.
- 33:40One and two count. Here's the pitch.
- 33:43Ground ball hit the shortstop. Charlie Neal feeds Gilliam for the fourth out and the side is retired.
- 33:49So for the Cincinnati Red Legs in the second inning, no runs on one hit. No errors and one man left on.
- 33:58And at the end of two it's Cincinnati one and the Dodgers have nothing.
- 34:02And now we're convinced.
- 34:04Well friends we just learned from the Carl Perillo night committee that there will be five busloads of folks coming down from Carl's hometown
- 34:12of Redding, Pennsylvania headed by Redding's mayor who will be down to Abbot Field with a double purpose.
- 34:17He wants to add the praise of Redding fans to those which will be heaps of fun for a loan to his fine family.
- 34:23But he also wants to meet one of Carl's teammates and pose for a picture with him for his sports den.
- 34:28You see the mayor of Redding is named Dan McDevitt. Just another nice little touch in a pleasant picture building up towards the Carl Perillo night.
- 34:38Hope you'll all be on hand and if you want to why not contact the committee at the hotel bosses and get your tickets right now.
- 34:45That's August 28th. Carl Perillo night with Fern and Butch and John, the whole family at home plate.
- 34:54A lot of friends from Redding and we hope to make it a night that Carl and his family will never forget.
- 34:59And for that matter for you folks who are at the ballpark. We hope it will be an extra enjoyable evening.
- 35:03the end of two innings. It is one to nothing Cincinnati and we'll pause the station identification. This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 35:10Dial 1460 WOKO Albany, New York WOKO the capital districts most talked about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 35:19Correct WOKO time now, 3 o'clock. Now back to Brooklyn Dodger baseball.
- 35:27Roy Campanella coming on now. the Dodgers go to bat in the third. Roy hitting 229. 47 runs batted in. Lawrence Wines and fires.
- 35:36And the fastballer tie inside ball one. Redlegs lead one to nothing top of the third inning.
- 35:45Lawrence ready again. Here's the pitch. In for a strike at the knees and it's one and one.
- 35:51Lucky strike going to tell you today from Cosby Field in Cincinnati.
- 35:59Curveball for strike two on Campanella. One ball two strikes.
- 36:07A general reminder when you're out shopping to buy your luckies by the carton that way you're sure not to run short.
- 36:16One and two. Lawrence Wines pitches outside for a ball and the count two balls two strikes on Campanella.
- 36:33Two to count.
- 36:36Brooks Lawrence into the windup and here's his pitch. Outside ball three. Three and two now on Roy.
- 36:45the Dodgers have an off day tomorrow and have a doubleheader in Chicago on Tuesday and another one on Wednesday.
- 36:50Single game on Thursday. Thursday's game will be on TV as well as radio. Channel nine at 225.
- 36:56Campy takes a curve outside ball four and he's on with a walk.
- 37:07Here's Peewee Reese coming on now. the Dodgers captain batting with Campanella on at first base. Nobody out.
- 37:16Reese hitting 213.
- 37:27Now Lawrence ready. Here's the pitch to Peewee. Bunt at the third baseline and Don Holt comes in to make the play but has no play as Reese beats it out for a base hit.
- 37:37the Red Legs not expecting Reese to bunt and with Holt laying back in double play depth.
- 37:42Peewee dumps the bunt along the third baseline and beats it out as Holt came in made a one hand grab on it but has no play.
- 37:49So Campanella moves to second base and it's a base hit for Peewee Reese.
- 37:54Hit number two off Brooke Lawrence and the pitcher Johnny Padres coming on.
- 38:03So Reese with a base hit. Bunt single on the third baseline.
- 38:08Moves Campy to second base and the Dodgers have two on, none out. Top of the third the Red Legs lead one to nothing.
- 38:15And now the Red Legs look for the bunt with Holt and Crow on the corners ready to come down the line toward the plate.
- 38:22Here's the pitch. Padres around the bunt takes it low inside, ball one.
- 38:37Johnny waiting. Campanella on second and Reese on it first.
- 38:45Lawrence ready to pitch. Johnny Bunt along the first baseline. It's a good bunt.
- 38:49Lawrence will go to first base with his play and the runners move over.
- 38:53So Padres with a nice sacrifice gets Campanella to third and Reese down to second base.
- 38:59One out as Padres is tossed out from Brooke Lawrence to Johnny Temple covering his first base.
- 39:05Here's Charlie Neal up down. Charlie flied to left field his first time up batting averages 262.
- 39:12In the last of the third inning the Giants lead Milwaukee one to nothing.
- 39:16In the last of the fourth Chicago and Philadelphia no score.
- 39:19In the last of the fourth St. Louis leads Pittsburgh one to nothing.
- 39:26Final score in the first game in the American League. Kansas City beat Washington 6 to 5.
- 39:32Detroit leads the Yankees 4 to 2 at the end, 5 to 2 at the end of 3 and a half innings, 2 and a half innings.
- 39:38A bounding ball to the right side and Keppel Schley will go to first as Campanella comes in to tie up the ball game.
- 39:45We've got a brand new one going as Charlie Neal bounces out to second baseman Johnny Temple.
- 39:50Campanella scores, Reese takes third, two away now to 1-1 ball game.
- 39:56For Neal a run batted in. Up will be Jim Gilliam with two outs and Reese on at third base.
- 40:08Gilliam flied to right his first time and junior hitting 249. Lawrence winds, here's the pitch.
- 40:14In for a strike at the knees.
- 40:31Round ball to the right side. In comes Johnny Temple to play the first in time for the outs and the side is retired.
- 40:39So the Dodgers go down in the third inning to pick up a run to tie the ball game. One run, one hit, no errors and one man left on.
- 40:46So at the end of the top of the third is Brooklyn 1 and Cincinnati 1. And now here's Vinn.
- 40:52Well and just about the time it takes to light up a Lucky, happy Joe Lucky will come your way with some mighty interesting clubhouse chatter.
- 40:59But right now he's going to stretch out and light up the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 41:05Lucky strike. Does that cigarette taste good?
- 41:09Out come Father Lucky's an honest to goodness cigarette. Nothing but fine tobacco.
- 41:14Naturally mild tobacco that's good tasting to begin with. And then it's toasted to taste even better.
- 41:21All right now let's get to that clubhouse chatter.
- 41:24the Dodgers have drawn over 950,000 so far this year, not including today's attendance.
- 41:30So they will easily go over the million mark before this trip is over. In fact we do that in Chicago.
- 41:35A great attraction on the road the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 41:39By the way, Sandy Amoros and Roy Cavanaugh are the greatest moviegoers on the ball club. Roy says Sandy really enjoys those shoot them ups.
- 41:46Of course that's baseball language for Westerns. And with a lot of day ball games on the road.
- 41:53You can imagine the ball club will be whiling away many an evening watching the movies and as we would say most of them shoot them up.
- 42:00Well thank you happy Joe Lucky and now we'll be going to the last of the third inning of a shoot them up of our own.
- 42:05It's a one one tie the Dodgers and Redlegs. Gus Bell will be first up and here's Jerry.
- 42:10Bell first time fly to left field.
- 42:17Coming on now to face Poderson a one one ball game.
- 42:21Gus hitting two ninety four.
- 42:25Last half of the third inning. the Dodgers one run on two base hits and the Redlegs one run on four hits.
- 42:34Bell has twelve home runs fifty two runs batted in. Left hand hitter against Poderson. A swing and a miss strike one.
- 42:45And fans still circulating around in the bleacher area out in the sun deck trying to find a place to sit down.
- 42:52Another fine crowd here at Crawford Field.
- 42:55Modbus delivers outside for ball and the count is one one.
- 43:02One ball one strike. Gus Bell leading off in the third. the pitch bounced out to the right side.
- 43:09Gilliam over makes the play in the Hodges in time and it's one away. So Bell out on the ground ball. Gilliam the Hodges one up one down and here's Don Holt.
- 43:19Holt's got an infield hit his first time a hard smash the third.
- 43:24Don hitting two ninety fourteen home runs and fifty nine runs batted in.
- 43:37Here's his pitch. Slow curve is low and it's ball one.
- 43:41Last of the third all tied up at one and one. the Dodgers and the Redlegs in the final game of the series here at Cincinnati.
- 43:50It'll be back to Brooklyn a week from tomorrow as the Dodgers take on the New York Giants.
- 43:55There's a long drive to the field under cooking here.
- 43:59Bow ball across the street and up on the laundry. Don Holt really got a hold of that one and hit it down the left field line but pulled it foul.
- 44:11That ball was really tagged across the street up on the roof of the laundry three hundred and fifty three feet away.
- 44:18Just a long noisy strike for Don Holt.
- 44:24One ball one strike. Here's the pitch. Inside the letters and it's ball two. Two and one.
- 44:34Ball game tied one one one out and on third inning Redlegs batting.
- 44:42the high fly ball to left field. Sandy Amarillo coming on planting over toward the line. He's right there. He makes the catch right on the foul line.
- 44:50So Don Holt's guys out the left it's two away.
- 44:54Chicago leads Philadelphia now one to nothing with the Phillies batting in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 45:02We'll have a complete rundown of all the scores from our Lucky Strike scoreboard at the end of this half inning.
- 45:11Here's George Crowe coming on. George struck out his first time batting average and even three hundred.
- 45:22Podras ready to wind up and here's the pitch. Curve ball on the corner for strike one.
- 45:32Last of the third ball game tied at one and one. Podras delivers fastball grounded out the first. Podras makes the play.
- 45:41Speed Podras in time for the outs and the side is retired. So the Redlegs go out in order in the third.
- 45:46No runs no hits no errors and none left on. And so at the end of three innings the play friends to score.
- 45:52Brooklyn one and Cincinnati one.
- 45:55And now with the Lucky Strike scoreboard here's Vint. For Giants in Milwaukee in a doubleheader Johnny Antonelli and Bob Probridge and the Giants lead one to nothing at the end of three innings.

- 46:20In the American League the Tigers and Yankees in the fourth inning the Tigers had bad bowling has just had a home run.

- 47:59Here's ball three down high to Duke and it's three balls no strike.
- 48:05Well in the third inning Campanella has the lead off batter walked and he scored the run to tie the ball game and now Schneider out in front on the count three and all.
- 48:14the windup and pitch is in for a strike and it's three and one.
- 48:23In case you joined us late manager Waldo Austin and Don Newcomb chasing the ball game in the first inning.
- 48:30Duke takes it inside ball four and Schneider is on with walk number two given up by Lawrence.
- 48:38Coming on now Gil Hodges.
- 48:40Gil's got a single his first time up hit one in the hole between third and short.
- 48:45Gil hitting three oh nine.
- 48:51A rather warm lazy afternoon with a fine crowd on hand here at across the field.
- 48:58Lawrence now working with Schneider on first base. Nobody out.
- 49:02the check in the pitch. Gil swings and misses strike one.
- 49:06One for the curve ball and didn't get it.
- 49:12Top of the fourth in a one one ball game here at Crosley Field.

- 49:22Here's the pitch. Curve is in for a strike two on the inside corner.
- 49:32Nothing and two on Hodges. Schneider on first and Brooks Lawrence pitching for the red legs.
- 49:39Ed Bailey gives him a sign.
- 49:45Now the stretch in the looks. Here's the pitch.
- 49:47Gil swings and hit the soft curve ball out toward Temple and he puts the ball and all hands are safe.
- 49:52Temple coming in for the slow grounder.
- 49:55Tried to feed the ball to Roy Mcmillan and the ball rolled up his left arm and behind him and all hands are safe.
- 50:02An error on the second baseman Johnny Temple.
- 50:06Schneider in his second base and Hodges on at first.
- 50:12the ball was hit slowly and Temple fielded the ball cleanly. They could have made the double play.
- 50:18But as it was they let the ball get away from him and everybody was safe.
- 50:23Here's Amarose up now and the infield looks for the bunch.
- 50:26Sandy takes the curve ball up on his first strike.
- 50:29George Cole playing inside the bag at first base and Don Holt a step or two down the line at third.
- 50:38Amarose batting, slide the right field his first time up.
- 50:42Strike one count. Here's the pitch.
- 50:45Amarose running up the third baseline at the good bunch and Holt has to play up now and he can't make a play.
- 50:51Holt decided to let the ball go so that at night's day fair he grabbed it and he was too late and all hands are safe.
- 50:58And the bases are loaded for the Dodgers.
- 51:00Amarose rolled the bunch right along the chalk line up the third baseline.
- 51:04Don Holt came in and decided apparently to let the ball go but it did not go foul.
- 51:09And then Holt changed his mind, grabbed the ball while it was still fair and then had no play.
- 51:15Amarose on with a base hit, a bunch swingle.
- 51:18At third base is Snyder.
- 51:20At second base Hodges.
- 51:22the batter Carl Farino.
- 51:24Carl bounced into double play his first time up.
- 51:27So the Dodgers now have something going here in the fourth inning.
- 51:30Bases loaded and nobody out.
- 51:32Ball game tied at 1-1.
- 51:36A walk, an error by Temple and a bunch swingle by Amarose.
- 51:40Hit number three for the Dodgers and two of them have been bumped.

- 51:45Lawrence now into the lineup and here's his pitch.
- 51:48Carl swings on a curve, strike one.
- 51:54Campanella on deck and Reese down in the hole.

- 52:13Carl swings a high fly ball to Deek site center field going for it is Val and he can't get it.
- 52:18It's in there for a home run for Farillo with a base hit ball.
- 52:27Carl Farillo hitting one at the deepest part of the ballpark here to get it out.
- 52:32390 feet over the screen wire in front of the right center field bleachers.
- 52:38And for Farillo, has eight bases loaded home run of his career and his ninth of the year.
- 52:46the Dodgers lead now 5-1.
- 52:51For the Grand Slam home run, 10,000 lucky's go along to our Honor Hospital, the VA hospital in Wiltshire, Pennsylvania.
- 52:59They've now exceeded their quota as we've turned along 11,000 and more coming today.
- 53:05So Carl Farillo with his eighth Grand Slam home run hit one into the corner at right center field
- 53:13where the screen wire in front of the bleachers joins the center field fence.
- 53:18And 90 feet away, Caffanella takes the curve for a strike.
- 53:24Maradar, Hodges, and Amoros of course riding around in front of Carl.
- 53:28Second home run in two days. Can't be swinging Van Messe's strike two.
- 53:43And ready, here's the pitch. High fly ball to left center field. Going back forward as Bell.
- 53:48Up the edge of the hill now, waits and he makes the grab in deep center field as Caffanella skies out.
- 53:54Well away. Up now will be Kiwi Reese.
- 54:00Well, Farillo had been out of Atlanta for quite a while.
- 54:03First he had a batting slump, then he had a bad neck.
- 54:06Got back into the ball game in St. Louis and hit a home run yesterday and now hits a big one today.
- 54:14Base is full, home run.
- 54:17Here's Reese with that, had a bump finger this first time of Kiwi hitting 217. Lawrence delivers.
- 54:23the curve is inside ball one.
- 54:35Here's a curve for a strike to Kiwi and the count is one ball one strike.
- 54:48the one-one pitch. Curve ball, strike two at the knees and it's one and two on Reese.
- 54:55Four runs in in the inning. Dodgers lead five to one in the final game of the series here at Cincinnati.
- 55:00Carl Farillo with a home run with the bases loaded.
- 55:04Sidearm pitch is full and it's back to the middle for a base hit.
- 55:08And that ball went right over the bag at second base and Reese is on with a single, his second hit of the game.
- 55:15Off Lawrence now, base at number five.
- 55:18And coming on will be Johnny Padra to sacrifice his first time up.
- 55:28the Dodgers five, the Redlegs one, top of the fourth inning.
- 55:31One out, Reese at first base, Padra's to batter.
- 55:46Third baseman down, holes playing in, looking for Padra's to bunt.
- 55:50Johnny squares off and takes it low, ball one.
- 55:54On deck batter, Charlie Neal, the leadoff man.
- 56:04Lawrence ready again, Padra's weight, the throw goes to first base but Reese is back.
- 56:13Here's the look and again a throw and again Teewee scoops back in ahead of the throw to throw.
- 56:21Both playing way in on the line at third, the pitch to Padra's,
- 56:24on a ground ball hit to McMillan, steps on, second throw to first at the double play to retire the drive.
- 56:31So McMillan who was playing right close to the bag, took the ground ball,
- 56:35stepped on and fired the first in time to get the Redlegs second double play of the game.
- 56:39Seven going six to three and another thousand lucky score on the hospital, the VA hospital at Wolfsboro, Pennsylvania.
- 56:46So on the fourth inning for the Dodgers, four runs on three hits, one Redleg error and none left on.
- 56:54So at the end of three and a half innings to play, the score, the Dodgers five, the Redlegs one.

- 58:21Padres now with a pocket full of runs to work on.
- 58:24Padres on the inside corner, strike one to Robinson.
- 58:31Frank is hitting 3-12 beyond that kid of Red Bailey and down in the hole, Wally Ford.
- 58:36Here's the windup and pitch.
- 58:38Changeup is felted down the left field line for a base hit.
- 58:41Amarose over to play the ball on the floor.
- 58:43Robinson makes his turn and has to hold now as Amarose really went over to get on that ball and fire it back in.
- 58:49Robinson on with a long single, a land drive over third that Amarose played halfway up the slope and left field.
- 58:56Base hit number two for Robinson and number five allowed by Johnny Padres.
- 59:02Here's that Bailey, the catcher coming on, grounded out the first base his first time up.
- 59:10So the Redlegs now trying to get something stirred up here in the last half of the fourth inning.
- 59:15the Dodgers got four big runs on, a home run by Carl Fuller with the bases loaded.
- 59:23Johnny Padres now working out of a stretch as Robinson comes to the plate, bounce it right back to the mound.
- 59:29the throw goes to second one, the first base double play.
- 59:32There's a tie or two of them there.
- 59:34As Bailey tried to check his swing, the ball hit off the bat, went back to Padres,
- 59:39threw a wheel and fired down the second to Charlie Neal to get Robinson.
- 59:42And the relay to first base was in time to double Bailey.
- 59:46the third double play of the game and another thousand free lucky to the VA hospital, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
- 59:57On the play at the second base, Charlie Neal twisted an ankle or was stepped on by the runner Robinson coming in.
- 1:00:10And Doc Wember is off now to see about it.
- 1:00:14Charlie has his shoe off, so he might have got stepped on and had his foot slightly cut.
- 1:00:19But Doc comes on back and Neal is going to be okay and stay in the game.
- 1:00:30All right throw away, Charlie Neal, laces up his shoe, goes back to shortstop and the batter will be Wally Foose.
- 1:00:36Round it out to first, picture to first his first time up.
- 1:00:42Fourth hitting 238.
- 1:00:44Padres ready, here's the windup and pitch.
- 1:00:47Round ball to third, reached down on one knee, makes his play, fires to Hyges and the side is retired.
- 1:00:54So for the Red Legs in the fourth inning, no runs, one hit, no errors and none left on.
- 1:01:00And at the end of four, the score, Brooklyn 5 and Cincinnati 1.
- 1:01:09Well friends, the first half of this game has been brought to you by Lucky Strike, the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:01:16It's made by the American Tobacco Company.
- 1:01:18Tobacco is our middle name.
- 1:01:21And now to take over is the F&M Schaefer Brewing Company of Brooklyn,
- 1:01:24brewers of Schaefer beer, America's oldest lager beer, it's real beer.
- 1:01:31Well friends, one week from tomorrow night, the Dodgers will be back home again at Ebbets Field.
- 1:01:36That's a new date on your Ebbets Field schedule, Monday night, August 5th.
- 1:01:40the Dodgers and the New York Giants.
- 1:01:42That's right, Willie Mays and company in that always exciting, always colorful, Interboro rival race.
- 1:01:49As a matter of fact, folks, there are four straight night games scheduled that week for those teams, August 5th, 6th and 8th at Ebbets Field
- 1:01:56and August 7th at Jersey City.
- 1:01:59So better do your ticket shopping right now.
- 1:02:16At the end of the top of the fifth inning, the Dodgers start off at the top of the batting order with Charlie Neal, Jim Gilliam and Duke Snyder.
- 1:02:225-1 Brooklyn leads the Red Legs.
- 1:02:24And now moving in for the play-by-play for the F&M Schaefer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, here's Vince Gilliam. Vinnie?
- 1:02:30Thank you, Jerry. Hi, everybody.
- 1:02:32Charlie Neal 0 for 2, batting 261, then Jim Gilliam and Duke Snyder.
- 1:02:36Brooklyn, five runs on five hits. Cincinnati, one run on five hits and Brooks Lawrence goes to work in the fifth.
- 1:02:42Fastball cut on a high towering foul to the right of the plate, barely coming over and cannot have a play.
- 1:02:48It's back into the crowd.
- 1:02:510-1 to Charlie Neal.
- 1:02:55Oh, thus far, Carl Ferullo, the man of the hour with that grand slam home run in the fourth inning,
- 1:03:01which reminds us to remind you about Carl Ferullo night, August 28th.
- 1:03:08Hope you'll be with us and salute a great fellow.
- 1:03:14Lawrence looks in to get a sign from Ed Bailey, Neal waiting.
- 1:03:18Fastball is cut on and fouled away. the upper deck going 2.
- 1:03:23In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Giants are leading Milwaukee 1-0.
- 1:03:28That's Johnny Antonelli and Bob Probridge in that one.
- 1:03:39Lawrence ready and a strike to pitch to Charlie Neal.
- 1:03:42Fastball up high, ball one, one and two.
- 1:03:55Neal waiting, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:03:58Lawrence ready and delivers. Fastball got him swinging.
- 1:04:04Oh, Charlie strikes out. He is now 0-3.
- 1:04:07That for Brooks Lawrence, the first strikeout that he has recorded, and the batter will be Jim Gilliam.
- 1:04:16Don Gross begins to loosen up now with Smokey Burgess down on the Cincinnati bullpen, as Jim Gilliam is the batter.
- 1:04:22Lawrence is due to bat second when the red legs hit in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:04:26Gilliam 0-2, batting 2-48. Junior takes the pitch down low, ball one.
- 1:04:31Jim having a great deal of trouble getting his base hits.
- 1:04:35He started off very well, went into a vicious slump and seemed to come out of it and fell right back down the manhole.
- 1:04:421-0 pitch is cut on and fouled away, one and one.
- 1:04:46It could very well be, it's only a guess, but it could be that Gilliam's style of hitting has changed a great deal.
- 1:04:52Or naturally, as the second hitter in the lineup, you're asked to do different things in the leadoff.
- 1:04:59the 1-1 pitch to Junior, cut on, fouled away, one and two.
- 1:05:03Whereas a leadoff man, Jim used to get on base a great deal with Watt.
- 1:05:07Now on the second slot, he's swinging away constantly.
- 1:05:12And is having a great deal of trouble getting his hits.
- 1:05:15One and two, the count of Jim on deck, Duke Snyder.
- 1:05:20Bertie Tebbit takes a peek down at his bullpen to watch Gross loosen up.
- 1:05:24Lawrence Wines and the one and two pitch to Gilliam inside, two and two.
- 1:05:30the Dodgers have lost their manager, Walter Alston, and pitcher Don Newcomb.
- 1:05:34Both men booted out before we got to the last of the first inning.
- 1:05:40the two two pitch to Jim Gilliam, cut on and hit to the hole at short, over there to plug it up as McMillan overhands the first just in time.
- 1:05:47So Gilliam is retired 6-3 on an eyelet play at first, two outs.
- 1:05:52He's talking about the Dodgers losing Alston and Newcomb in the first inning.
- 1:05:56You read about that young catcher at Baltimore named Zupo.
- 1:06:00He was kicked out of the ballgame before the game got underway, before the lineup cards had been brought up to home plate.
- 1:06:06That's right, it was warming up the starting pitcher, but it was thrown out of the game.
- 1:06:11He's only 17 and a half, and I think he has now gone down in the books to about the youngest major league player to ever be kicked out.
- 1:06:18Snyder takes a breaking ball low, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:06:25Snyder flying to left and wog, he's batting 278, 5-1 Brooklyn, two out on the fifth inning.
- 1:06:31Lawrence down with a fast ball and Mitch's low ball, two, two and oh.
- 1:06:36Ed Hurley of the American League threw young catcher Zupo out.
- 1:06:41Also said the boy had been warned a few days before for a little trick he seemed to have.
- 1:06:46the American League umpire didn't go for it. Two out, but Snyder is whacked foul into the crowd, two and one.
- 1:06:53What the youngster would do, I guess he would make him believe he was still back in the high school field.
- 1:06:58He would be warming up the starting pitcher, and as the umpires would come walking out on the field to go to home plate, he'd make believe he'd throw the ball at them.
- 1:07:05And that did not go over at all.
- 1:07:08They finally kicked him out the other day while warming up a starting pitcher. Boy, that's a new one, isn't it?
- 1:07:16Lawrence just fussing around out there in the mound, two balls, one strike.
- 1:07:19Now Brooks is ready and delivers to the Duke who hits one down toward Johnny Temple. It's a routine play and John makes it.
- 1:07:27So the Dodgers out on order for the first time since the first inning. One, two, three, and at the end of the four and a half inning to play, Brooklyn five, Cincinnati one.
- 1:07:39Okay, Jerry, isn't that the way it is, fam? When you put a lot of work into something, you know it's done right.
- 1:07:46You really take pride in what you've accomplished, don't you?
- 1:07:49Well, I'll just let the Shaper people feel that way about Shaper beer.
- 1:07:53You know, turning out a beer as good as Shaper takes a mighty big effort, picking and choosing rich barley malt, tangy hops, and other fine natural ingredients.
- 1:08:03But that's only the beginning because it takes a lot more skill as well as years of experience to blend and brew the ingredients into beer at its best, Shaper beer.
- 1:08:13But man, the result is sure worth it.
- 1:08:16You get a brilliant golden amber brew that's pure pleasure, a beer that gives you the light, zesty flavor you want but don't always find.
- 1:08:25So make your next glass of beer real enjoyment. Shaper beer. It's real beer.
- 1:08:42All right, last of the fifth inning, McMillan's coming on and right back to the action. Here's them.
- 1:08:47Roy batting 257 at an infield single in the second inning, one for one.
- 1:08:53McMillan in the pitch is Fata and Johnny Temples.
- 1:08:56Padres gets his first pitch over for a strike. Pete Wisonant is over at the bat rack, so no doubt he will bat for Brooks Lange.
- 1:09:04In the bullpen, Tommy Acker is back up. Don Groats sits down, so no doubt Acker will pitch to Brooklyn in the sixth inning.
- 1:09:10Padres delivers a strike one pitch and serves it high. One ball, one strike.
- 1:09:16Dodgers five, Cincinnati one, last of the fifth inning.
- 1:09:22We have a notice too on Carl Frillo's grand slammer. Pass it along to you.
- 1:09:26the 1-1 error is on the outside corner, strike two.
- 1:09:29Carl Frillo had his grand slam home run in the fourth inning.
- 1:09:32It marked the eighth grand slam home run of his career, and oddly enough, four of his eight grand flammers have been hit at Cincinnati.
- 1:09:47Padres winds on the one and two pitch. Fastball cut on, hit the right field.
- 1:09:51Frillo going back, angling on the ball now, turns full and makes the play. One up, one away.
- 1:09:57We've got a station break in right now. This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 1:10:05Tile 1460, WOKO, Albany, New York. the capital district's most talked about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 1:10:14It's 334. Now back to the Brooklyn Dodgers Cincinnati red-leg baseball game.
- 1:10:23One out on the bottom of the fifth inning, 5-1 Brooklyn, and Pete Wissenden batting for starting pitcher Brooks Lawrence.
- 1:10:29Speed of right-hand batter, Padres fastball a little too low. Ball one, one and all.
- 1:10:42Wissenden batting 190, right-hand batter. Padres looks in to get his sign.
- 1:10:47Johnny Reddy on the one-oh pitch. Fastball in for the strike, one and one.
- 1:10:51Brooks Lawrence, worked five innings, gave up five runs. Four of the five runs earned. Five hits.
- 1:11:01Walk two struck out one. Carl Frillo chased him with the grand slammer in the fourth.
- 1:11:07the one-one pitch to Wissenden, change up, and Padres bounces it up to the plate. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:11:14It's another fine crowd. It appears to be the same size crowd as we had the first night of the series, Friday night, which would put it up around 30,000.
- 1:11:27Padres ready, and the two-one pitch. Fastball high and tight, ball three.
- 1:11:32Three and one on that Johnny Temple. Show of the crowd is somewhere around 30,000.
- 1:11:36the Dodgers will then go to Chicago, having drawn over 980,000 on the road.
- 1:11:43They'll easily pick up 20,000 in three days at Chicago. Three-one in there, strike two.
- 1:11:50So you can bet your boots that before we head for Milwaukee, the Dodgers will have drawn one million people.
- 1:11:56They're not quite pre-complete road trips. One more to go. Tremendous attraction.
- 1:12:02We certainly hope you folks will be out at the ballpark when we get home.
- 1:12:07Padres winds on the full-count pitch to Wissenden. Fastball cut on a high foul back of the plate. Campanella coming back and shielding his eyes, but this is going to land up on the net.
- 1:12:21Running down to the bullpen, Joe Becker perhaps carrying a message down there.
- 1:12:27the Dodgers having drawn over 900,000, this being their 45th ballgame. Give you an idea, they've drawn over 20,000 per game on the road.
- 1:12:38I wouldn't want to buy Schaefer for everybody who's seen the Dodgers play on the road.
- 1:12:43All right, Padres ready now and the 3-2 pitch. Fastball cut on another high foul. This one might be playable. Campanella coming back. It is playable and Campanella grabs it.
- 1:12:58Two down on the bottom of the fifth inning. Brooklyn 5, Cincinnati 1, and leadoff man Johnny Temple, the batter.
- 1:13:05Temple has been, well, just a plain test as far as Brooklyn is concerned. He has a double today. He had two singles and a double yesterday. And on the first game he had three singles.
- 1:13:19So he has seven hits in this series. John batting 287. They're having a great deal of trouble getting him out. Padres delivers. Fastball missing a little inside. Ball one.
- 1:13:34Brooklyn five runs on five hits. Cincinnati one run, five hits and one error. the 1-0 pitch to Temple. Breaking ball down low. Ball two, 2-0. Campanella annoyed at the call. Now starts to walk the ball out towards the mound.
- 1:13:49Stan Landis to play it on fire. Bill Baker at first. Frank Dascoli at second. Frank Sicori at third. Padres looks in. Campanella wigwags his time to him. the 2-0 pitch on the outside corner for a strike. 2-1.
- 1:14:04On deck, Gus Bell. the Redlegs got a run on the first inning. the Dodgers came back with one on the third and four on the fourth. On call for those eight major league grand slammers. There's a line dry for a base hit and Mr. Johnny Temple has his eighth hit of the series.
- 1:14:24Temple singles to center with two out on the fifth inning and that will bring up Gus Bell. Bell has flied to left and bounced out batting 293.
- 1:14:37A very humid day here in Cincinnati. You're watching the folks in the ballpark wave those scorecards like a thousand butterflies all over the place. Hope you have plenty of shape for wherever you are. That'll prevent you from getting hot under the collar.
- 1:14:54Padres looks to first. John delivers to Bell a slow curve on the outside corner for a strike. 0-1. One of those pitches that starts to come in high and tight to a left hand batter and then breaks down and away. 0-1.
- 1:15:08When the Dodgers hit in the sixth inning they'll have Hodges, Amos and Perillo.
- 1:15:18Five innings to play the Giants won Milwaukee nothing Antonelli and Trowbridge. Strike one pitch. Sharp breaking curve low and outside. 1-1.
- 1:15:26the Cardinals lead the Pirates 2-0 at the end of sixth inning. Vernon Lohr and Young Vaughn McDaniel in quest of win number five.
- 1:15:34McCubs lead the Phillies 1-0 at the end of sixth. Kurt Simmons and Tom Pahoski. the 1-1 pitch. Fastball hit down to Neal is up with it. Waits for Gilliam to get to the bag and hits him with his cause and they erase Johnny Temple.
- 1:15:48You know the boys are going into second base high today.
- 1:15:53Wow. Okay in the fifth inning no runs won here to man left on at the end of five innings to play Brooklyn five Cincinnati one.
- 1:16:04Now let's visit with Jerry.
- 1:16:06If you're a camera fan of one of the baseball fans you just can't afford to miss the Dodgers Argus Camera Day at Edwards Field Saturday August 24th and you'll be seeing a fine ball game too. So next chance you get pick up tickets for August 24th.

- 1:16:39the contest is open to amateur photographers only and the date is Saturday August 24th Dodgers Argus Camera Day at Edwards Field. Make your plan. Circle that date on your calendar. August 24th camera day at Edwards Field.
- 1:17:09Moving along now to the top half of the sixth inning it'll be Hodges Amarillo San Perot to come on and face Tom Acker the new pitcher for the Red Legs and with a checkup on Acker's record to play by play.
- 1:17:21Here's Ben. Tommy Acker making his 31st appearance for Cincinnati.
- 1:17:26That'll time.
- 1:17:28Or would have with Brooks Lawrence.
- 1:17:30Lawrence made his 32nd today.
- 1:17:34Acker has started five times primarily relief man number 26 for him in relief.
- 1:17:39His record nine wins and four defeats Tom Acker.
- 1:17:50You know how to first up then Sandy Amarillo and Carl Perl and the first inning Brooklyn five runs on five hits and no errors. Cincinnati one run six hits and one error. Hodges single and get on on Johnny temples area is one for two batting three always
- 1:18:07you know uniform heavily stained now with persuasion. Of course you notice it more on the traveling gray is than you do on the home white uniform.
- 1:18:17Acker ready and the big fella delivers fastball cut on is a high fly ball and shallow left field down the line still in fairground comes McMillan to make the play.
- 1:18:30He was not feeling well but he's saying right in there.
- 1:18:38And in this hot weather finally starting to react a bit now.
- 1:18:43No not the two.
- 1:18:45the two had it.
- 1:18:51the Amos fighting 298 fly to right and singles one for two. It's a line drive base hit in the right field so little Sandy's two for three while he post gets it back in his Amos rifles one to right.
- 1:19:04That number one off Tommy Acker hit number six for Brooklyn and the hero for Brooklyn and the villain for Cincinnati Mr. Carl Perl coming up.
- 1:19:13He got rich in a hurry with that grand slam home run in the fourth inning. He now has 48 runs batted in he has had nine home runs he hit one yesterday with a man aboard.
- 1:19:22Car letting 264 the Dodgers quietly there hasn't been too much said about it but boy are they rooting for Perl.
- 1:19:33Acker said takes a peek and first decided to throw over there. Well of course has been known to carry the ballclub right on his shoulders when he's red hot.
- 1:19:44Packers sat and delivers to fellow swings and the foul back of the place there'll be no play it'll land on the screen on one.
- 1:19:51Remember 1949 as was Carl Perl who just about picked up the entire Brooklyn ballclub in the month of September and carried them right into the World Series.
- 1:20:00He has those first the early part of this year Carl whacked away hitting way up in the 330s.
- 1:20:07Then a combination of injuries and a hitting slump and he really fell off and now the Dodgers hope he's taking the escalator back up to the penthouse.
- 1:20:17For the first Amaro to have a short lead is right back Brooklyn five Cincinnati one were in the sixth inning with one out.
- 1:20:30the strike one pitch to fellow fastball cut on and filed away off first base coming over his crow but he has no play back into the crowd on to.
- 1:20:42the New York Giants came up with a run in the sixth inning and at the end of five and a half innings of play the Giants to and Milwaukee nothing that Johnny Antonelli and Bob Fowbridge.
- 1:20:54So I chose walking very closely for you Cardinals leading Pittsburgh to nothing at the end of the six.
- 1:21:01the Cubs lead the Phillies one nothing at the end of the six.
- 1:21:07the Cubs are up on top a look over at Amaro's the own two pitch to fellow side arm and it's in there.
- 1:21:13Call strike three.
- 1:21:16Don't throw a card looking walked away and rose holes on it for you down in the battle Roy Campanella.
- 1:21:25the Giants and fly deep to center is all for one batting to 28.
- 1:21:38I've won Brooklyn to our Amaro's at first base on the sixth inning.
- 1:21:43Tom Acker said and delivers to Campanella who swings and hits on the static duck bell is right there comes in a few steps to take it and that doesn't.
- 1:21:53the third inning for Brooklyn no runs one hit one man left on they have only left two men at the end of five and a half innings of play.
- 1:22:03Brooklyn five Cincinnati one ball game moving along to the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:22:09the Dodgers five and the Red Legs one.
- 1:22:11It'll be Don Holt George and Frank Robinson coming on in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:22:17Johnny Fodders trying to hold that four run lead now.
- 1:22:20Let's get right back to the play and here's Ben.
- 1:22:23Don Holt is batting to eighty nine.
- 1:22:27Today had himself a single and fly to left field one for two.
- 1:22:32Don Holt George Crow and Frank Robinson.
- 1:22:35Did anybody get on maybe at barely.
- 1:22:38I dress taking his warm up tosses.
- 1:22:39Johnny is soaking wet now.
- 1:22:42I dress shows the first person to show you how much is aspiring around his knees.
- 1:22:49Cascading right down McDevitt yesterday.
- 1:22:55He was soaking wet from the shoulders to hip.
- 1:23:02All right here we go.
- 1:23:03Bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:23:05Red Legs fans begin that familiar hand clap now as Holt settles in.
- 1:23:10Fodders winds comes to him and the fastball is inside for one one and oh.
- 1:23:15Brooklyn five runs six hits and no errors Cincinnati one run six hits and one error.
- 1:23:20We're in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:23:23I'd like to get one oh and the fastball is inside ball to know.
- 1:23:34I dress ready and the two office fastball over at the knees to and one.
- 1:23:41the dugouts here in Cincinnati are air conditioned at least in the respect and not sealed in as to completely air condition that space.
- 1:23:49But they have cool air being blown in around the roof of the dugout.
- 1:23:53It circulated to one pitch to Hulk at the knees strike to do and to.
- 1:23:58We understand the Yankees have put air conditioning in their dugout here in Cosley Field.
- 1:24:03They've done it for both the home team and the visitors.
- 1:24:08Hulk waiting to and to.
- 1:24:11Back fastball filed away holding count to and to.
- 1:24:15One other innovation that the Cincinnati Red Legs have come up with.
- 1:24:18They've taken a square piece of foam rubber.
- 1:24:22Oh, it's only about an inch thick and they use that in the on deck circle for the next batter to kneel on to tourists.
- 1:24:29Cut on it.
- 1:24:30the left field Amarose comes on 100 and takes it one up one away.
- 1:24:37George Cole be the batter.
- 1:24:39Anytime you read in the paper that someone mentions, let's say air conditioning in the dugout or foam rubber for the batters in the on deck circle, some old time rules come out and decoder saying, well, pampering the ballplayers.
- 1:24:53It appears that the old time is the only people in the world and not want the business to be improved.
- 1:24:57the business of playing baseball.
- 1:25:00the things and files away on one actually find it for instance out here in very hot weather.
- 1:25:08the players still move around a lot better because of the cool dugout.
- 1:25:12They get a chance to rest, which means better baseball for the folks watching it.
- 1:25:16George Cole takes the curveball outside one and one.
- 1:25:27I've won Brooklyn bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:25:30Roger is back again and the curveball is cut on as a high felt the deep right center.
- 1:25:34Rilla running parallel to the little fence and makes the play for the out.
- 1:25:38I don't believe I ever saw the ball.
- 1:25:42It was up to the ball was hit into deepest right center and Snyder never moved in straightaway center and fellow with a left hand batter up there close to the line and right field.
- 1:25:53He did as he could parallel to the little barrier fence and hold it in and right center and Snyder even as for a little caught the ball had not moved.
- 1:26:01I'm sure the Duke has no idea where it was.
- 1:26:06Two down in the sixth inning and the batter is Frank Robinson.
- 1:26:09He is two for two single twice batting three 14.
- 1:26:16I've won Brooklyn in the sixth Robinson stepped in.
- 1:26:20He was winds and delivers fastball that moves him back for one.
- 1:26:24You know he always talk about hitters and the fact that they have a good background or a bad background when they're hitting outfielders have problems looking into the shirt sleeve crowd trying to pick up that baseball.
- 1:26:37the one offense to Robinson fastball a line drive it's foul outside of first back into the crowd.
- 1:26:53the new baseball camp and all the holes up his right hand that's flown down a moment.
- 1:27:08And makes the play for the.
- 1:27:13the very hazy sky out there we have some blue sky today but mostly a lot of clouds the humidity seems to have put a spell over it.
- 1:27:23Boy these fellows looking up into the sky are really squinting red legs grow out in the sixth inning at the end of six and five since the ninety one out of the other scores on our shape is go board and here's Jerry.
- 1:27:34In the ball game at Milwaukee first game of the double the giant lead Milwaukee to nothing at the end of six innings of play and to Nellie against.
- 1:27:43In the first of two at St. Louis at the end of six innings of play the Cardinals lead the Pirates to do nothing it's law and Vaughn McDaniel in the first of two at Chicago also at the end of six innings of play.
- 1:27:55Chicago one and Philadelphia nothing so shut out working in all three games and all three games at the end of six innings of play first games of double hitters.
- 1:28:06In the American League at the end of five and a half innings of play Detroit leads the Yankees six to three points back against Larson and burn with bowling a home run.
- 1:28:15That's the first of two Chicago and Baltimore all sides three three at the end of six innings of play harshman and Fisher for the White Sox or Dell for Baltimore Cleveland leads Boston six to one at the end of six and a half innings of play.
- 1:28:29And in the first of two Kansas City beat Washington six to two.
- 1:28:37That's everything from the shape of scoreboard so back to play and here's them.
- 1:28:42Three race the batting.
- 1:28:45Two batting to 22.
- 1:28:48Reese Padres and Neil facing Tommy anchor in the seventh inning five one Brooklyn.
- 1:28:53That's all the TV cut on a high foul or first call coming over to the box he's railing he has no play.
- 1:29:03We had a fun single in the third inning and bounce one up the middle in the fourth.
- 1:29:12Brooklyn five runs six it's no errors since 91 runs six it's a runner. the big difference car pillows eight major league grand slammer came in the fourth inning.
- 1:29:36Johnny Padres making his way up the home plate now.
- 1:29:42Redlegs got a runoff Padres in the first inning.
- 1:29:46With runners at first and third and two out Frank Robinson single the rovers.
- 1:29:54Johnny Padres batting over 79 years three years today is sacrifice and hit into a double play off one.
- 1:30:01Hacker winds and delivers and Padres takes his site.
- 1:30:06When Cincinnati comes to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning as certainly few folks who are not keeping score it'll be at Bailey Wally Post and Ryan McMillan spot curveball is hit into the hole on the right side the temple is there to plug it up and throw the crow.
- 1:30:22Two up two away.
- 1:30:26Charlie Neal.
- 1:30:28Slide left bounce out and truck out batting to 60.
- 1:30:45Neal settles in the hitters box now Billy Herman directing the club from the third base coaching box.
- 1:30:52the pitch to Neal and for the strike on one in case you might have just joined us after the Dodgers did not score on the first inning and Gilliam had argued briefly on a called strike before the red legs could come to bat in the bottom of the first while the
- 1:31:05outcome of banished by played umpire Stan Landis fastball on the inside corner for a strike on to Billy Herman third base coach and acting manager.
- 1:31:21I get right back on to and the fastball is high and inside one one and two.
- 1:31:29Saluting our tape award winners for this week Randy Jackson for his fine hitting and all around play absurd and for his fine pitching Johnny Padres one and two pitch to Neal is cut on a miss and Charlie is stuck out for the second time today.
- 1:31:44Neal starting to get into a kind of a strikeout slump now twice today twice yesterday once before that twice the day before that twice the day before that.
- 1:31:54So you get the idea now that Charlie and that leadoff spot striking out a great number of times.
- 1:32:00Dodgers out in order in the seventh inning at the end of six and a half innings of play Brooklyn five Cincinnati one.
- 1:32:06Now you get it you know fans the mark of a great pitcher is being able to give the catcher just the kind of pitch he calls for.
- 1:32:14And when you think about it it's the same way with brewing beer the mark of a great brewer is being able to give the customer just the kind of beer he calls for.
- 1:32:23Well that's exactly what the people have been doing for well over a century. You just give the signal for a tall golden amber glass of shakers and you'll get exactly what you like in there.
- 1:32:36the light and dusty flavor you want but don't always find. You see that's the way shaper is.
- 1:32:42It's through carefully expertly to develop all the true beer character and through satisfying flavor you expect in beer every glass of shaper beer is right in the strike zone right there for real lip smacking enjoyment.
- 1:32:58Put a cool foamy glass of paper in your hand right now. You'll see it's real beer.
- 1:33:08Last of the seven things at Bailey coming on and right back to play here's been.
- 1:33:13And his offer to bounce out in the first inning and hit into a double play taking a half swing in the fourth barely batting to 90.
- 1:33:22Bailey post and we'll see about Roy McMillan. Don Gross begins to loosen up in the bullpen now along with Herschel Freeman Bailey takes the pitch in first.
- 1:33:39I dress back with a curveball that breaks blown away one ball one strike at Bailey first man up bottom of the seventh inning Brooklyn five Cincinnati one.
- 1:33:52I just get the sign from camp another one one a curveball cut on is a high pop line a very shallow center Gilliam going out tonight are coming on Gilliam calling and make the play.
- 1:34:04One up one away that will bring up Wally post head back to the box and bounce out to reach while eating to 37.
- 1:34:20I dress is not striking out many batters today and by the is only one strikeout is forgot George Crowe in the first inning.
- 1:34:28However John is not walk the man. Wally post little outside for one one and oh open day tomorrow for the Dodgers.
- 1:34:39In fact Brooklyn will stay overnight here in Cincinnati and fly up to Chicago tomorrow evening the ballclub wants to watch that heavyweight fight tomorrow night.
- 1:34:49the one hope that is cut on and filed away one on one. We're flat to Chicago check into the hotel and be able to watch Floyd Patterson and honey hurricane Jackson.
- 1:35:00Then we'll be back on baseball come Tuesday.
- 1:35:03Newcomen Magley against the Cubs curveball is grounded foul to the left of the plate one and two.
- 1:35:19Five one Brooklyn bottom of the seventh inning one out the one and two pitch to Wally post fastball just inside to and through.
- 1:35:36I dress back to action and the two two pitch to post fastball high ball three full count those two pitches are the usual type that's it Wally post swings out address strikes out post a great deal and on that type that iron inside first around the letters maybe the next one up around the chin.
- 1:35:54But neither time did Wally offer.
- 1:35:57So this is gone to a full count. John wines and delivers fastball foul by Cardinals lead the pirates three to nothing at the end of seven and a half.
- 1:36:09the Cubs lead the Phillies one to nothing at the end of six.
- 1:36:15the three two pitch to Wally post fastball grounded to Gilliam the rest of move way over to his left to come up with it and then make this play to hot. So Wally post a big bull hitter hardly got that bat around at all on the fastball and hit it to Gilliam.
- 1:36:32the second down in the seventh inning and the battle Roy McMillan single is short and fly to right.
- 1:36:49And the first pitch in an over strike one.
- 1:36:54Coming up in the eighth inning they'll have Gilliam Snyder and Hodges.
- 1:37:04There's a little strike one slow curve respo and full foul outside the left field line and down into the bullpen.
- 1:37:20No ball two strikes two out bases empty seven winning five Cincinnati one and shape of the year delighted to be sending it all to you from the cause we feel in Cincinnati strike to pitch overhand curve got him looking on the outside corner.
- 1:37:35Call strike three.
- 1:37:38And growl a little better he walked away.
- 1:37:51We'll hear from Jerry in just a few moments but first we'll pause for station identification. This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network dial 1460 W.O.K.O. Albany New York W.O.K.O. the capital districts most talked about station with downtown studios in the
- 1:38:08correct W.O.K.O. time now two minutes after four o'clock.
- 1:38:24the ball games are having when you're listening or watching ball games on radio and TV.
- 1:38:40the strike baseball guy and record book and 50 cents your name and address to baseball guy.
- 1:38:56the eighth inning in the ball game that's moving right along now Jim Gilliam coming on followed by Duke matter and Gil Hodge's eighth inning and here's Ben Gilliam fly to right and his bounce out twice batting to forty seven Tom Acker looks in to get a
- 1:39:11strike. This will be Tommy's last inning. You do the bat first in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:39:17Packers to wind up now and delivers to Gilliam and pass ball a crowd in the bed ball one.
- 1:39:25the Dodgers are facing a problem right now in their lineup for the first two men in the batting order not getting on base Neil and Gilliam.
- 1:39:33the one hope it's the junior cut on and is a base hit Jim finally breaks the drought and gets a thing of the right.
- 1:39:41That number to our backers.
- 1:39:44However, the shortcomings of Neil and Gilliam at the top of the order can very well be wiped away to Carl Burlough comes swinging back.
- 1:39:57Burlough's grand slam on the fourth inning is the difference of this game Brooklyn five Cincinnati one in the eighth.
- 1:40:03Luke Snyder over to batting to seventy seven. Acker checks Gilliam and delivers inside a golf that a pitch and doesn't get it on one.
- 1:40:29Acker ready. Another check of Gilliam. Now the strike one pitch the side who runs up as if the front and the pitch is low one ball one strike in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 1:40:39Art Fowler now begins to loosen up the utility outfielders keep with them.
- 1:40:44Art Fowler.
- 1:40:48Outfield on the deep and around the right so much so that Snyder has all of straightaway center field to shoot at. Bell is way over in the right center.
- 1:41:00McMillan is over shifted to plug up the middle he's near the bag at second and hope is playing in on the grass.
- 1:41:08Acker ready for one one pitch to Snyder he tried to bat and foul to one and two.
- 1:41:18Brooklyn five runs seven hits and no errors Cincinnati one run six hits and one.
- 1:41:28the Cubs leading Philadelphia one to nothing and third round has just come on to relieve Tom for hostages so Philadelphia might be kicking up some dirt now I'd really feel.
- 1:41:42One and two.
- 1:41:45Acker straddling the rubber goes to the rosin bag.
- 1:41:51He's up on top. William held on by crowed first nobody out the one and two pitch to Snyder cut on is a high drive to deep center just fell off the terrace through the wall at the wall leaps but it's off the top of the wall.
- 1:42:06William had to hold up and go to third on Snyder's double. William now come to the plate and runs right through Herman signed the score.
- 1:42:17Billy Herman had held Gilliam up. He was waving his hands at junior and Gillian just kept on coming as the throw went to shortstop Roy McMillan who turned and fired into second and Gilliam without a play being made on him scored all the way.
- 1:42:34So Snyder doubles the center and Gilliam legs it over before the run.
- 1:42:40But I did not lead 61.
- 1:42:43A junior had his mind made up. He was coming.
- 1:42:49the batters kill hundreds with Snyder at second nobody out six one Brooklyn Packard delivers and he's just runs up the bottom takes it low ball one.
- 1:42:58That is right the center came within two feet of clearing the center field wall.
- 1:43:04Well enough to tell us to the wall leaves as high as he could and was about a foot short in his leaf.
- 1:43:11At Bailey and Richard Tommy Acker now mean halfway between home plate in the mound.
- 1:43:16the first one to come out of the sixth Cincinnati one were in the eighth inning.
- 1:43:32Boy Gill is soaking wet real summer day out here at Cincinnati.
- 1:43:39One of the
- 1:43:43you've got on and powered by one and one you'll appear to be trying to take a shot to write that time.
- 1:43:49He was breaking towards the line one and one that ran up the screen stuck in the screen.
- 1:44:10In the background giving us the official paid attendance twenty eight thousand five hundred and twenty four twenty eight five to four.
- 1:44:25Acker ready check second one one pitch is outside backhanded by Bailey ball to around the bunch. So twenty eight thousand five hundred and twenty four added to the previous two attendance figures.
- 1:44:42the Redlegs in the three game series averaged a little more than twenty six thousand per game also seventy eight thousand two hundred and sixty eight.
- 1:44:55Acker ready a look at Snyder has a pretty good lead off second the two one pitch to Hodges he pushes a button in the air and it lands foul outside of first to and through.
- 1:45:05the Milwaukee Phillies came up with two runs in the eighth inning at the end of seven and a half innings of play the Phillies to and Chicago one.
- 1:45:14the Cardinals have added another run in the eighth inning for the end of eight and to play the Cardinals for and the Pirates nothing that's bond McDaniel pushing the shutout before at the end of seven and the Giants to end Milwaukee nothing.
- 1:45:32the count to six one Brooklyn nobody out in the eighth inning Tom Acker ready in relief for Brooks Lawrence sidearm curve is outside ball three.
- 1:45:44the Dodgers have drawn roughly two hundred and seventy eight nine hundred and seventy eight thousand thus far this year. So another twenty thousand so in Chicago and will be over the million mark on the road.
- 1:46:02Three two pitch to Hodges curve ball and he just does check his swing it's outside ball for it barely for test. You know started off and just did check.
- 1:46:15Hodges at first base of the walk neither at second nobody out and Sandy Amoros the batter. Amoros fly to right as a fun thing go and line the single right batting three oh three.
- 1:46:32Six one Brooklyn they're looking for more here in the eighth inning. Hoke is inside the bag at third expecting a bunch. Acker ready delivers Amoros who takes on the outside corner first right on one.
- 1:46:45Ron McNeil and riding to side is back at second time to cut down his lead. Crow is not holding Hodges he's inside the bag and ready to come to the plate.
- 1:46:57Hard power continues to throw away in the Cincinnati bullpen. Tom Acker that checks his man at first and second. Now the strike one pitch Amoros he does run up along third it's a good one.
- 1:47:11Hoke will have to hurry to get him and just does. Amoros dumps a fine bunch to sacrifice work. Play going five to three. Hodges to second, Snyder the third. First base is open and Carl Ferullo the batter.
- 1:47:27After Ferullo comes Campanella. Ferullo hit into a double play in the second inning but then hit a grand slam home run in the fourth.
- 1:47:35He chased in Snyder, Hodges and Amoros who were all aboard ahead of him. Ferullo struck out looking his last time up. Carl batting 263.
- 1:47:46Runners at second and third one out. Six one Brooklyn in the eighth. And Bertie Tebott-Thomas in the dugout to his catcher Ed Bailey put him on.
- 1:47:56Bailey holds his right arm wide and takes the first cross outside. So Carl Ferullo receives an intentional walk and they will pitch to Roy Campanella.
- 1:48:10Ball two to Carl. Snyder holding in third. Hodges at second.
- 1:48:18Backers that lobs the third one wide. Three and oh.
- 1:48:28You know an odd thing in a sense the way they talk about the rabbit ball all the time.
- 1:48:36the only home run hit today in the National League thus far has been Ferullo's grand slam on the fourth inning.
- 1:48:42Giants Milwaukee it's two nothing Giants at the end of seven. It's four nothing Cardinal over Pirates at the end of eight.
- 1:48:49It is two to one until he's over the Cubs at the end of seven and a half. No home runs in any of those games.
- 1:48:54All right here's Roy Campanella with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning. Brooklyn six Cincinnati one.
- 1:49:00Campy batting two twenty seven has walked and twice fly to Gus Bell. In field and double play depth now. Acker winds and the camp and the curve ball low and away.
- 1:49:12Ball one at the Campanella. Peewee Reese.
- 1:49:19Brooklyn six runs eight hits and no errors. Cincinnati one run. Six hits one out.
- 1:49:27Tom the Acker winds and one oh six to Campanella fastball inside ball two to an oh.
- 1:49:37Snyder at third Hodges at second. Ferullo at first. One out.
- 1:49:49Acker looks in to get his time from Bailey. Now Paul Tom is ready. Wines and the two oh six to Campanella fastball in there.
- 1:49:58Two and one. When Cincinnati bats in the bottom of the eighth. Acker's spot is two up first. Then Johnny Temple and Gus Bell.
- 1:50:14Cabinola just waiting. Acker's staring in two balls and one strike. Acker now backs off the rubber and just as quickly gets back on.
- 1:50:22Looks the third goes to his wind up and the two one fits to Campanella. Fastball caught on is a high fly ball to right. It's deep.
- 1:50:29Wally Post going back to grab it. Tagging up is Snyder. Going to third is Hodges and everybody makes it. Snyder comes over and Hodges goes to third.
- 1:50:38And the Dodgers lead seven to one. Oh, Campanella scoring fly ball to right field. Snyder coming over. Hodges going to third and Ferullo holding it first.
- 1:50:55Two runs off Tommy Acker. Dodges seven. Cincinnati one. Two out on the eighth inning. Burners at first and third in the batter, Peewee Reef.
- 1:51:04Peewee is two for three. A bunt single, single to center and bounced out. It's in two twenty one.
- 1:51:12Acker ready and delivers and a bunt up along the third base line drops foul.
- 1:51:18So Reef trying to bunt for a base hit and get Hodges over. It's not a squeeze play. Not with two out.
- 1:51:24Peewee bunted a foul. All in one.
- 1:51:28Schaefer, we are sending it to you and we certainly hope that you're buying your Schaefer, especially over the weekend times in the convenient party size court bottle.
- 1:51:39For us the best way really to buy Schaefer is by the case.
- 1:51:51All in one. Acker ready and delivers. Curve ball fell to the left field. Robinson almost in his tracks. Takes it out his chest for the out.
- 1:52:00So Reef lines to left and for the Dodgers in the eighth inning. They had two runs on two hits. A single, a double and a scoring fly ball.
- 1:52:11And they leave a couple. At the end of the seven and a half innings of play, Brooklyn seven and Cincinnati one.
- 1:52:19Well now what Jerry? Well now then while the field changes hands, let's have a couple of young friends take the spot line. How about it?
- 1:52:30For real, real enjoyment, get Schaefer, Schaefer beer. For real, real enjoyment, ask for Schaefer.
- 1:52:39It's real beer. For real, real refreshment, get Schaefer, Schaefer beer.
- 1:52:45For real, real refreshment, ask for Schaefer. It's real beer.
- 1:52:54That's a real trumpet.
- 1:52:59That's real beer. For real, real enjoyment, get Schaefer, Schaefer beer.
- 1:53:06For real, real enjoyment, ask for Schaefer. It's real beer.
- 1:53:16Let's have a play on the last half of the eighth inning. Seth Wazoski coming on to bat for Tom Acker.
- 1:53:22the Dodgers are out in front now seven to one. So let's get right back to play and here's Ben.
- 1:53:28Wazoski is batting 284. He has three home runs, nine runs batted in. As a pin fitter yesterday, he singled into the hole in the right field.
- 1:53:38As a pin fitter the night before, he flied to left. So Ted is one for two in this series.
- 1:53:45Wazoski, Temple and Bell, bottom of the eighth inning, seven one Brooklyn.
- 1:53:49Modder's fastball a little low, ball one, one and oh. We just have a report on the final score. the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Pirates four to nothing.
- 1:53:58Young Von McDaniel, 18 years old, pitched a one hitter. the one-oh pitch, the Wazoski is drilled, a right center. It's not a chase, and that one, she's gone.
- 1:54:09Ben Wazoski is batting 284. He has three home runs, nine runs batted in. As a pin fitter yesterday, he flied to left. As a pin fitter yesterday, he flied to right.
- 1:54:22He's one of the best hitters in the state, and he's one of the best hitters in the state.
- 1:54:31Ben Wazoski always gets a good piece of the ball against Johnny Padres, comes walking off the bench, and drills one of his specialties, a low line drive home run.
- 1:54:48And it is now Brooklyn seven, Cincinnati two, here in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:54:53Johnny Temple takes the strike. Wazoski now has four home runs, ten runs batted in. A low line drive into the right center field seat.
- 1:55:02Padres back with a fast ball, a loose sample out of there. One ball, one strike.
- 1:55:07Don Gross throwing in the Cincinnati bullpen now, and back of Padres is Don Drysdale.
- 1:55:16In this heat, you really have to watch your starting pitcher.
- 1:55:22Padres to his windup. Now the one-one pitch to change up, cut on in line to kind of feel the clean base hit.
- 1:55:29Not a rep with the ball, so home run by Wazoski, a bullet swing to the center for Temple, and here comes Jeff Bell.
- 1:55:38That for Johnny Temple, his third hit of the game.
- 1:55:42He had three hits yesterday, and three the day before. Nine hits in the series for Johnny Temple.
- 1:55:51Sandy Koufax, trotting down to the Dodger bullpen now.
- 1:55:55Brooklyn seven, Cincinnati two, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:55:59Johnny Temple at first base, and Gus Bell was 0-3 the batter. Gus batting 2-92.
- 1:56:07Padres looks to first and delivers a curve and spins it low. Ball one, one and 0. On deck, Don Holtz.
- 1:56:16the Red Legs came up with a ninth inning rally yesterday, but fell short. Picked up three to lose five to a...
- 1:56:22trying to rally here in the eighth. Dodgers lead 7-2.
- 1:56:25Pass ball to Bell is cut on and popped up.
- 1:56:28Charlie Neal, floating over to his left a bit, backs up now as the wind takes it, and now Charlie grabs it for the out.
- 1:56:34the bell pops up to short. Johnny Temple holds it first, and Don Holtz the batter.
- 1:56:40Holtz is one for three, single in the first inning. Don batting 2-88.
- 1:56:52Padres set. Hodges not holding Temple on. Fast ball to Don Holtz, gets an ace for a strike on...
- 1:57:11Brooklyn seven runs on eight hits and no errors.
- 1:57:19Cincinnati two runs, eight hits, one out.
- 1:57:28the strike one-fifth. Fast ball cut on a high foul back of the plate.
- 1:57:31Cavanaugh coming back. It's playable. He's under it. He's got it. Two down.
- 1:57:40Now here comes George Crowe with two out. Johnny Temple his first race.
- 1:57:44Bottom of the eighth inning, 7-2 Brooklyn. Crowe is all for three, batting 2-98.
- 1:58:13Crowe waiting. Padres delivers. George swings. There's a slice pop fly to the left side.
- 1:58:18Charlie Neal backing out and takes that one.
- 1:58:23So the enthusiasm here at Cincinnati was promptly dampened by Johnny Padres.
- 1:58:29Kluszewski had a home run. Temple, single. And then bell pops up.
- 1:58:33Holtz fouled out and Crowe popped up. For the Redlegs, one run on Kluszewski's home run.
- 1:58:38Two hits. the man left on. At the end of eighth inning to play, Brooklyn seven, Cincinnati two.
- 1:58:44Okay, Jerry. Well, friends, before we leave Cincinnati, we want to remind you of a terrific day at Ebbets Field.
- 1:58:50You'll recall the Saturday game rained off the schedule during the last visit of the Redlegs.
- 1:58:55Well, it will be played as part of a tremendous finite doubleheader at Ebbets Field, Tuesday, August 40th.
- 1:59:01Now, we don't have to warn you about what that means. A rice for tickets, of course.
- 1:59:06So do your shopping for that big doubleheader with the Redlegs, August 20th.
- 1:59:11the same two teams spiked in a day game, August 21st, their last meeting after.
- 1:59:17So circle the date, August 20th. A doubleheader, the Dodgers and the Redlegs, a finite at Ebbets Field.
- 1:59:24Well, fans, we've certainly got some big dates coming up when the Dodgers get back home.
- 1:59:28Beginning right off with a chance and the Dodgers on Monday night, August 5th, a week from tomorrow.
- 1:59:35the Dodgers get back home playing a four-game stand against the Giants.
- 1:59:39Monday and Tuesday at Ebbets Field. Wednesday at Jersey City, that's August 7th.
- 1:59:44And Thursday, August 8th, at Ebbets Field against the Giants.
- 1:59:49So a lot of baseball coming up when the Dodgers get back home in August.
- 1:59:52And the old tennis chase going right down to the wire.
- 1:59:56A reminder also that Thursday's game from Chicago will be on TV as well as on radio.
- 2:00:02Broadcast time will be 2.25. That will be the final game of the series between the Dodgers and the Cubs at Chicago.
- 2:00:09A day off tomorrow, doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the single game Thursday, the Dodgers at Chicago.
- 2:00:16A lot of action coming up this week.
- 2:00:18Well, we go to the ninth inning now with progress the first batter.
- 2:00:22So coming back in for the play-by-play for Schaefer-Beer, here's them.
- 2:00:25Don Gross will be the third Cincinnati pitcher, left-hander making his 24th appearance.
- 2:00:32He started 12, and now this is 12th relief appearance.
- 2:00:35Don, I guess, is like that other little girl with a curl and a farad.
- 2:00:40When she was good, she was very, very good. And when she was bad, well, he won his first four.
- 2:00:46He was four and old. And he has lost the next six. So he's now four and six.
- 2:00:517 is troubled right now. Comes on and relieves the pitch to Padres.
- 2:00:557-2 Brooklyn, ninth inning. the sidearm pitch up high and outside, ball one.
- 2:01:00Don Drysdale continues to tune up with Joe Becker in the Dodger bullpen.
- 2:01:05Gross ready, and back comes the 1-0 pitch, and the fastball is blown away.
- 2:01:11Ball two, 2-0. Dodger seven runs, eight hits, and no errors.
- 2:01:15Cincinnati two runs, eight hits, and one error.
- 2:01:222-0 pitch on the outside corner for a strike, two and one.
- 2:01:29So the Dodgers have been losing two out of three to St. Louis, trying to win two out of three here at Cincinnati.
- 2:01:36Two-one at a Padres, a line drive base hit up the middle.
- 2:01:40Just Bell comes on to field it, and Padres at first base.
- 2:01:43I don't know if the Dodgers might see that base hit with mixed emotions.
- 2:01:47They lead by five runs in the ninth inning. It's a very hot day, and I imagine the boys will adjust as soon as they pad their back in the cool of the dugout.
- 2:01:55But there he is at first.
- 2:01:57Singler centers.
- 2:02:01Base hit number one off Don Gross, hit number nine for Brooklyn.
- 2:02:06the batter is Charlie Neal, who is 0-4-4, but what is bothering and perplexing him a bit is the fact that he is striking out.
- 2:02:12He's struck out two out of four times again today, hitting 2-59.
- 2:02:16Crow to first. Crow is not holding the runner, and Padres easily ducks back to the bag.
- 2:02:23Gross delivers, and Neal Bunch fouls to the right of the plate.
- 2:02:27Four and one.
- 2:02:32Amore begins to loosen up now in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 2:02:36Vicente Amore appeared yesterday in the lead.
- 2:02:45Seven to Brooklyn, ninth inning. Nobody out. Johnny Padres just singled his at first.
- 2:02:50To strike one pitch to Neal is cut on and belted to right field. Back goes Wally Post, a way back to the parry.
- 2:02:56Bunch to leap up and grab it. And back to first comes Johnny Padres.
- 2:03:02Nice play by Wally Post. So Neal is at a long way and Post falls her in.
- 2:03:14the batter is Jim Gilliam, who is 1-4-4, singled to right in the eighth inning, and kept on coming to score on Snyder's double off the center field wall.
- 2:03:23Jim batting 2-50.
- 2:03:28Looking for base hit number 99.
- 2:03:33Only one Dodger has 100 hits.
- 2:03:38Gil Hodges has 108.
- 2:03:44Gross delivers and Gilliam takes a strike. Four and one.
- 2:03:50One out, ninth inning, seven to Brooklyn.
- 2:03:55One Cincinnati bats in the bottom of the ninth inning. They'll have Frank Robinson, Ed Bailey, and Wally Post.
- 2:04:02Strike one pitch to Gilliam on the inside corner. Strike two.
- 2:04:07Boy, it's shape or weather here in Cincinnati. Happy, what kind of weather do we have in New York?
- 2:04:12Same type of weather, huh? Shape or weather back there. Well, we hope you folks are having plenty of cold tapers.
- 2:04:18We found a comfortable spot and hope you're having a nice weekend.
- 2:04:22the 0-2 pitch is cut on and piled away. Holding count over all two strikes.
- 2:04:40Gross takes a peek at first. the strike two pitch is outside. Ball one, one and two.
- 2:04:50Milwaukee Braves are now at bat in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:04:54the Giants lead two to nothing. Gilliam swings and misses. Down he goes.
- 2:05:01Gross records a strike out. Two out on the ninth and the batter, Duke Schneider.
- 2:05:08Schneider walks, bounced out, flied to left and doubled high off the center field wall to drive in Gilliam. Duke batting 2-80.
- 2:05:19Gross looks over at Padres, delivers to Schneider and the curve is over. Strike one.
- 2:05:25the Giants lead two to Milwaukee nothing, bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:05:29the St. Louis Cardinals have already won their ballgame, four to nothing over Pittsburgh on a one-hitter by Vaughn McDaniel.
- 2:05:36Breaking ball to Schneider down low, one and one.
- 2:05:50Vaughn Gross ready and delivers to Schneider, another sidearm curve on the outside corner, one and two. Two out on the ninth, seven to Brooklyn.
- 2:06:08Gross delivers one and two to Schneider, swings and there's a high fly ball to right field.
- 2:06:12Wally Post is there, coming over close to the foul line, but he's still in fair ground and takes it for the out.
- 2:06:19Padres opens up with a single and the next three batters go out.
- 2:06:22In the ninth inning, no runs, one hit. A man left on at the end of eight and a half innings of play.
- 2:06:27Brooklyn seven, Cincinnati two and I imagine Johnny Padres will take a couple of minutes before he gets out there to the mound.
- 2:06:34So while we have a chance, let's listen to Jerry.
- 2:06:37Well, many of the Schaeffer people certainly know how to make good beer, that's for sure.
- 2:06:41And they know how to package it for your convenience too, friends.
- 2:06:45For example, take the handy Schaeffer half quart can.
- 2:06:49Now there's a real thoughtful can. Really, it's got a nice handy shape, so easy to carry, so easy to hide away in your refrigerator.
- 2:06:58It doesn't get in the way when you're storing it and it cools quick like if you're in a hurry.
- 2:07:03But the most thoughtful thing is this, it holds 16 delicious ounces of throat-pleasing Schaeffer beer.
- 2:07:10Two full glasses of golden amber goodness. One for you and one for your wife.
- 2:07:16Or you might want to share it with a guy next door.
- 2:07:19In fact, you can be real thoughtful and put the whole can by his chair.
- 2:07:23That way he can pour his own second glass when the first goes dry.
- 2:07:27So why not stock up, get in the supply of Schaeffer half quart cans.
- 2:07:31They each hold two full glasses of real enjoyment Schaeffer beer. It's real beer.
- 2:07:42Well, the Dodgers have an off day tomorrow. Go to Chicago Tuesday for a doubleheader.
- 2:07:47And a doubleheader on Wednesday.
- 2:07:50Single game on Thursday and then to Milwaukee for a weekend series Friday night.
- 2:07:54Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon and then back to New York for a big Monday night August 5th attraction
- 2:08:00against the New York Giants. So make your plan, be on hand with it, or just get back home.
- 2:08:06Into the last half of the ninth inning here, Dodgers lead 7-2.
- 2:08:10Robinson Bailey and Post coming on to face Johnny Potter who just now is taking his moment back.
- 2:08:15So we'll get back to the action and here's Ben.
- 2:08:18I wish I'd said that slower, Jerry. I don't mind you running through the schedule out here.
- 2:08:23But when you say, don't you say, get back home.
- 2:08:25Real slow, it sounds good, you know? Get back home.
- 2:08:31Look at that old boy.
- 2:08:35Well, Johnny Potter is ready to work in the bottom of the ninth inning, 7-2 Brooklyn.
- 2:08:40Now Johnny got that base hit in the top of the ninth and stood at first base while the next three men went out.
- 2:08:46You can bet your boots the Dodgers will watch him very carefully now.
- 2:08:49In fact, in the both ends, they have Eddie Robuck and Sandy Kopec firing back at him.
- 2:08:55But it's blazing hot down on the floor of this ballpark.
- 2:08:58There's a hot one right up there off Reese's Grub. Picked up by Neal, he throws, not in time.
- 2:09:04A nice five-hight Charlie Neal.
- 2:09:12Frank Robinson hit one wide up there. Reese got his fingertips on it and couldn't hold it.
- 2:09:17And Neal backing up Pee-wee, backhanded the ball, had a long throw to first and just missed getting Frank Robinson.
- 2:09:25It'll go as a base hit for the young left fielder, his third hit of the afternoon.
- 2:09:34That is hit number nine for the Redlegs, 7-2 Brooklyn, bottom of the ninth inning, and a ringing wet Johnny Padres out there on the mound.
- 2:09:42Ed Bailey is 0-3, bounding 289.
- 2:09:46Padres delivers and the fastball is in for the strike on one.
- 2:09:50With the Dodgers leading by five, they're going for out, so Hodges will not hold Robinson, the infield back in a normal depth.
- 2:09:57Reese, however, protecting the bag at third as Bailey swings and beats one foul to the right of the play. 0-2.
- 2:10:09Bailey will be singing up and down the National League today, at least right now, for the final score is in from Milwaukee.
- 2:10:16the New York Giants and Johnny Andonelli have shut out the Braves 2-0.
- 2:10:29Padres set. Leone 2-1 to Bailey, cut on and missed strike three and he gave him a real slow curve.
- 2:10:34Bailey tried to time it and almost fell out of his uniform, trying to check his swing and then started again.
- 2:10:42So Padres gets his third strike out of the afternoon.
- 2:10:48One out on the ninth and the batter Wally Post, who is 0-3, Wally batting 236.
- 2:10:54the outfield goes the other way, now deep and around the left.
- 2:10:58Frank Robinson at first in the ninth, 7-2 Brooklyn, east side, nine hits.
- 2:11:03the Red Legs have committed an error.
- 2:11:05Fastball is cut on, there's a high fly ball down the left of your line.
- 2:11:08Neal going out and planning into foul ground.
- 2:11:10Ambrose coming on, it's Neal on a brilliant catch in the bullpen.
- 2:11:15Charlie Neal all over the place, makes a fine catch, way down in the red leg bullpen.
- 2:11:21And it is extremely tough territory down there for a couple of reasons.
- 2:11:25First, because the field slopes in foul ground for drainage purposes, you start to run downhill.
- 2:11:32Charlie was running with his back to home plate.
- 2:11:35And secondly, he had to watch himself, or if he had stepped on one of the home plate rubbers in the bullpen, he might have taken a header.
- 2:11:43Charlie stayed with it and made the play.
- 2:11:46Fine running catch by shortstop Charlie Neal.
- 2:11:50Two out in the ninth inning, Brooklyn 7, Cincinnati 2, and the batter is Wally Post, who is 1-3, batting 255.
- 2:11:58About a 28,524 on hand today.
- 2:12:03Padres delivers fastball, a little mack and it's inside, ball one.
- 2:12:12Johnny Padres checking side with Cabanela.
- 2:12:16Ready on the 1-0 pitch, fastball down low, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:12:21Sometimes when a ball club has a 0-5 run lead in the ninth inning and two out, you'll see the pitcher wind up.
- 2:12:27He's going to disregard the base runner at first, but Padres not doing that.
- 2:12:32He's keeping an eye on Robinson anyway and working from his first position.
- 2:12:41McMillan waiting 2-0. Padres delivers and gets the outside corner for a strike, 2-1.
- 2:12:47Tomorrow the off day and we'll be talking to you Tuesday afternoon.
- 2:12:51It'll be Don Newcomb and Sal Magley in a double header with the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:12:55And there'll be another one, another double header on Wednesday.
- 2:13:01Padres delivers 2-1. Fastball is lined to left field, Ambrose coming over, grabs it at his chest for the out and the Dodgers have won a big one
- 2:13:09and have taken two out of three from Cincinnati.
- 2:13:11And Johnny Padres, who is all pitcher and he is brilliant away from home in particular, has done it again on the road.
- 2:13:19Jerry has some fine statistics on Johnny Padres.
- 2:13:22It's another brilliant performance. He gave up one run in the first inning and then nothing but smoke rings the rest of the afternoon until the eighth.
- 2:13:29the Redlegs have one there and that was it.
- 2:13:31And the Dodgers have won it 7-2 to take two out of three from Cincinnati.
- 2:13:35For the notes on Johnny Padres and also the statistics and to wrap it up, here's Jerry.
- 2:13:40Okay, Vinnie, for Johnny, his consecutive complete game road victory, allowing a total of three runs in 54 innings.
- 2:13:49And today Johnny did it by allowing no walks. He struck out three and kept the bases well scattered.
- 2:13:55the total for the Dodgers, seven runs, nine hits, no errors and five left on.
- 2:14:00And for Cincinnati, two runs, nine hits, one error and six left on.
- 2:14:05So at Cincinnati, the Dodgers lost an 11-inning opener 6-5 and bounced back yesterday to win 5-3 and today 7-2.
