Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, October 7 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefebvre writes, it was the custom in the middle ages as formerly among the Romans for noble personages to wear crowns of flowers called chaplets which later on became the golden diadems worn by kings. These crowns were offered to persons of distinction as a feudal do. The Virgin as Queen of Heaven and of souls has a right to the same homage wherefore the church asks us to recognize the title of Mary as queen of the holy rosary and she exhorts us to offer to her as daughter of the father, mother of the son, and spouse of the holy ghost a triple chaplet or three crowns of roses of which she shows us all the beauties in today's office and to which she has given the name of Rosary.
• 1:32
The word chaplet as the third of the Rosary is called is the diminutive of Chapel. The Collect reminds us that the Rosary is a mental prayer in which we meditate on the mysteries of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. With these Mary was intimately associated. The Feast of the Most Holy Rosary is a summary of the liturgical year as we meditate on the mysteries and also of the Breviary as we recite a 150 Ave Maria's corresponding to the 150 Psalms ending by Gloria Patri. It shows in an admirable triptych the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious events in the lives of Jesus and Mary which are recalled in succession in the Catholic calendar.
• 2:33
In the Christmas cycle, the soul plunged in an atmosphere of joy meditates on the five joyful mysteries on Wednesdays and Fridays, on ember days in winter, on Christmas day, on February 2, and on the Sunday in the octave of the epiphany. Again, she contemplates during the sad season of the passion, the five sorrowful mysteries on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Lastly, she sympathizes amid the joys of the Paschal season and Pentecost with the five glorious mysteries at the feasts of Easter, Ascension, the descent of the Holy Ghost, and the assumption of the Virgin. There is a plenary indulgence analogous to that of the Portiuncula to be gained on the day of this feast by all the faithful who visit a church where the arch confraternity of the Rosary is established. The Gospel which gives us the chief part of the Angelica salutation shows us that the Rosary is a vocal prayer.
• 3:53
The Pater, Credo, and the Gloria which are recited with the Ave Maria's are also found in the Mass or in the Divine Office. The Rosary as a private devotion consists therefore of elements taken from the liturgical cycle and as a solemnity of the church it forms part of the cycle. This prayer has in the course of centuries obtained many graces for Christendom. It was as a special commemoration of the signal victory at Lepanto on Sunday 10/07/1571, a favor due to the recitation of the Rosary when the forces of Islam threatening to invade Europe were broken that the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted replacing very significantly the feast of Our Lady of Victory. Prescribed by Gregory the thirteenth for certain churches, it was extended to the Catholic world by Clement the eleventh in thanksgiving for another triumph over the same foes in Hungary in 1716 under Charles the sixth.
• 5:20
Leo the thirteenth moved by the sorrowful trials under which the church groans raised the feast to one of the second class with a new mass and office. Commemorated today is Saint Mark Pope and confessor. Mark a Roman occupied the Holy See eight months under the reign of Constantine the Great. He succeeded Saint Sylvester and continued with great zeal the organization of the church begun by the latter pope thanks to the long era of peace inaugurated by the Emperor. He died in the year of our Lord 336.

In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Let us all rejoice in the Lord keeping a feast day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary for whose celebration the angels rejoice and unite in praising the Son of God. My heart hath uttered a good word.
• 6:49
I speak my works to the king. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let us all rejoice in the Lord keeping a feast day in honor of the blessed Virgin Mary for whose celebration the angels rejoice and unite in praising the Son of God. The Collect.
• 7:30
Let us pray. O God whose only begotten son by his life death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant we beseech thee that by meditating upon the mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Mark.
• 8:19
O eternal shepherd, do thou look favorably upon thy flock which we beseech thee to guard and keep forevermore through blessed Mark, supreme pontiff, whom thou didst choose to be the chief shepherd of the whole church through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Proverbs. The Lord made me when he first went about his work at the birth of time before his creation began. Long, long ago, before earth was fashioned, I held my course.
• 9:15
Already I lay in the womb when the depths were not yet in being. Listen to me then you that are my sons that follow to your happiness in the paths I show you. Listen to the teaching that will make you wise instead of forsaking it. Blessed is the man who listens to me who keeps vigil day after day at my threshold watching till I open my doors. The man who wins me wins life, drinks deep of the Lord's favor.
• 10:00
The gradual, because of truth, and meekness, and justice, and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear, for the king hath greatly desired thy beauty. Alleluia. Alleluia. This is the solemnity of the glorious Virgin Mary, of the seed of Abraham, sprung from the tribe of Judah of the noble line of David.
• 10:37
Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time God sent the angel Gabriel to a city of Galilee called Nazareth where a virgin dwelt, betrothed to a man of David's lineage. His name was Joseph, and the virgin's name was Mary. Into her presence the angel came and said, hail, thou who art full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
• 11:15
Blessed art thou among women. She was much perplexed at hearing him speak so and cast about in her mind what she was to make of such a greeting. Then the angel said to her, Mary, do not be afraid. Thou hast found favor in the sight of God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call him Jesus.
• 11:50
He shall be great, and men will know him for the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob eternally. His kingdom shall never have an end. But Mary said to the angel, how can that be since I have no knowledge of man? And the angel answered her, the Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the most high will overshadow thee.
• 12:26
Thus, this holy offspring of thine shall be known for the son of God. See moreover how it fares with thy cousin Elizabeth. She is old, yet she too has conceived a son. She who was reproached with barrenness is now in her sixth month to prove that nothing can be impossible with God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
• 12:59
Let it be unto me according to thy word. The offertory. From me comes every grace of faithful observance. From me all promise of life and vigor. Mine to burgeon like a rose bush that is planted by running water.
• 13:26
The secret. Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, to be fittingly prepared for the offering of these gifts and through the mysteries of the most holy Rosary so to meditate upon the life, passion, and glory of thine only begotten Son that we may become worthy of his promises who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost. God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of St.
• 14:06
Mark. With Thy loving kindness we beseech Thee, O Lord, being moved by the offering of our gifts, and enlighten thy church that thy flock may prosper everywhere and the shepherds under thy guidance may be rendered acceptable to thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of Our Lady.
• 14:51
It is truly meet and just right and for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the festivity of blessed Mary ever virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light. Jesus Christ our Lord through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, The power stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
• 16:12
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Send forth flowers as the lily and yield a fragrance and bring forth leaves in grace and praise with canticles, and bless the Lord in his works.
• 16:45
The post communion. Let us pray. May we be assisted, we beseech thee, o Lord, by the prayers of thy most holy mother whose Rosary we celebrate that the virtue of the mysteries we adore may be shared in the effect of the sacraments we have received may be obtained who livest and reignest with God the father in the unity of the Holy Ghost. God through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 17:26
A commemoration of Saint Mark. Since thy church has been nourished by the sacred repast, Govern her in thy clemency, we beseech thee, o lord, so that under the guidance of thy mighty rule, she may enjoy greater freedom and abiding integrity of religion through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
• 18:16
Hail, holy queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, O queen of the most holy Rosary that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
