- Lucas: We’ve spent the last few episodes watching the Ottoman Empire bleed out through war, reform, and finally, revolution. But there is a lingering question that often confuses listeners about the transition from empire to republic: if the Sultanate was abolished in November 1922, why did the Ottoman dynasty linger for another year and a half? The answer lies in a strange, contradictory compromise that tried to keep one foot in the religious past while sprinting toward a secular future. Luna: So they kept the title but removed the power? Lucas: Exactly. In the Treaty of London and the subsequent decisions by the Grand National Assembly in Ankara, they made a distinction that seemed legally neat but politically fragile. They abolished the Sultanate—the political executive authority—but retained the Caliphate, which is the spiritual leadership of the global Muslim community. They needed someone to hold that title, so they looked to the next available male heir in the House of Osman. Lucas: That person was Mehmed Abdülmejid II, a distant cousin of the last ruling Sultan, Mehmed VI Vahideddin. Abdülmejid was an engineer by training, a practical man who had served in the Ottoman Navy during World War I. He wasn’t a politician, and he certainly wasn’t a revolutionary. When the Assembly voted on November 19, 1922, to install him as Caliph, it was largely a gesture to soothe domestic conservative sensibilities and maintain some diplomatic leverage with the Muslim populations in British India and elsewhere. Luna: He sounds like a reluctant participant in his own coronation. Lucas: He was deeply uncomfortable with it. Abdülmejid reportedly said he felt like a 'captive' in the Topkapi Palace, surrounded by luxury but stripped of any real agency. He lived in the Dolmabahçe Palace after the fall of the old regime, surrounded by servants and protocol, but every decision regarding state affairs was made by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his cabinet in Ankara. Abdülmejid’s role was essentially ceremonial: he signed decrees when asked, led prayers, and maintained the image of continuity without wielding any actual governance. Lucas: For eighteen months, this arrangement held. It was a bizarre limbo where the former imperial court continued to host receptions and balls in Istanbul, unaware that their time was effectively numbered. The new Republic was busy rewriting laws, abolishing Sharia courts, and standardizing education, all while the Caliph sat in his palace, a silent witness to the erasure of his own political world. It was a tense, awkward coexistence, defined more by what Abdülmejid could not do than what he could. Luna: Did Atatürk ever explain why he allowed this temporary arrangement? Lucas: Atatürk’s reasoning was primarily strategic. He believed that abolishing the Caliphate immediately would alienate the Muslim communities in the newly formed Turkish Republic’s borders, as well as provoke outrage across the Middle East and South Asia. By keeping Abdülmejid as a figurehead, Ankara hoped to demonstrate that the new Turkey was respectful of Islamic tradition, even as it built a secular state apparatus. It was a calculated risk, hoping to buy time for the Republic to consolidate its power before making the final break. Lucas: But the calculation failed because the two concepts were fundamentally incompatible. You cannot have a secular parliament drafting laws that contradict religious edicts while a Caliph sits nearby claiming moral authority. Tensions rose quickly. Abdülmejid occasionally tried to exercise his spiritual influence, sending letters to foreign leaders or commenting on social issues, which Ankara viewed as interference. The Republican press began to openly criticize the 'waste' of maintaining the imperial household, calling it a relic of the old tyranny. Luna: So the compromise collapsed under its own weight. Lucas: It did. By early 1924, the political climate had shifted decisively toward radical secularism. The Hatay region was being integrated, and the Republic was pushing harder for Western-style legal codes. On March 3, 1924, the Grand National Assembly passed Law No. 429, which abolished the Caliphate entirely. It was a swift, unanimous vote. There was no protest, no riot, just the cold efficiency of a new government severing its umbilical cord to the past. Abdülmejid was given twenty-four hours to leave the presidency of the Caliphate. Lucas: The decree didn't just strip Abdülmejid of his title; it ordered all members of the House of Osman to be exiled from Turkey. They were forbidden from returning. This was not a gentle retirement. The men of the dynasty were rounded up, stripped of their passports, and marched to the airport or train stations with nothing but the clothes on their backs. It was a mass expulsion of a royal family that had ruled for over six hundred years. Luna: They were treated like criminals rather than royalty. Lucas: In many ways, yes. They were processed through checkpoints, inspected for contraband, and placed on transport vehicles destined for Europe. Abdülmejid himself was initially allowed to stay in Istanbul for a few weeks to settle personal affairs, but he was effectively under house arrest. He watched as his cousins departed for Paris, Egypt, and Switzerland. He remained in Turkey until late March, a ghost in his own palace, waiting for his own turn to leave. Lucas: When Abdülmejid finally left Istanbul in April 1924, he went first to Paris. He was a broken man, financially dependent on a small pension provided by the Turkish government, though that too was later reduced. He struggled to adapt to life as a private citizen. The glamour of the Ottoman court was gone, replaced by the mundane realities of renting apartments and navigating foreign bureaucracies. He died in 1944, relatively poor and isolated, never seeing Turkey again. Luna: It feels like a profound loss of heritage for everyone involved. Lucas: It was. The exile scattered the House of Osman across Europe. Some settled in Nice, France, where Abdülmejid’s son, Ertuğrul Osman, later lived. Others went to London or Cairo. The cultural memory of the Ottoman dynasty was fractured, dispersed among diaspora communities that maintained rituals and genealogies but lost their center. For the people of Turkey, the removal of the Caliphate was celebrated by many as a necessary step toward modernity, but for the imperial family, it was a traumatic rupture that severed them from their home and history. Lucas: Returning to Abdülmejid’s exile, his death in 1944 marked the end of an era, but not the end of the Ottoman narrative. His body was flown back to Turkey for burial, but due to the exile law, he could not be buried in the traditional Imperial Mausoleum in Istanbul. Instead, he was interred in the Yahya Efendi Cemetery in Kadıköy, a humble plot far from the grandeur of Topkapi. Luna: A quiet resting place for the last Caliph. Lucas: It is a fittingly modest end. The irony is that while the Republic sought to erase the political symbols of the Ottoman past, the emotional resonance of that history never truly vanished. Today, visitors to Kadıköy can still stand at Abdülmejid’s grave, a reminder of the complex, painful, and human cost of building a modern nation-state. The Ottoman Empire was not just a political entity; it was a civilization that took centuries to dismantle, and its echoes remain in the streets, the laws, and the memories of the region. Lucas: The story of Turkey from Byzantium to today is not just a sequence of conquests and treaties. It is a series of identities clashing and merging. Abdülmejid II stands as the final bridge between those worlds, a man who tried to hold onto dignity while the ground beneath him turned to dust. His exile reminds us that political transitions are always personal tragedies for those caught in the crossfire of history. Luna: It puts the scale of the Republic's transformation into sharp focus. Lucas: Absolutely. And it leaves us wondering: as Turkey continues to navigate its own identity in the twenty-first century, how much of that imperial past remains embedded in its culture, even if the political structures are long gone? That is a question for another conversation, but for now, we’ll leave Abdülmejid in his quiet cemetery, watching over the Bosphorus he could no longer call home.
