- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: We weren't sure we were gonna have this, but the weather has been pretty nice to us.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Where did the fall go?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I thought we were supposed to have We got a week of fall.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Got a week of fall.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: So we have two more weeks after this, Rodney.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And uh done in two weeks.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We could take about two months off for the holidays.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Party time.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: So, but we have some good sports news.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: What a week.
- 0:34unknown: Yeah.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Well, not totally.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That wasn't a good game.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It was a good game.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It was a good game.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It's uh until somebody fumbled.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Somebody was holding the ball out like a loaf of bread as usual.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: And uh I thought it was funny that he they didn't put him back in the game after that.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: The guy's like 80 years old, you know, so we're gonna punish him.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: He's 80.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I mean.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, that was so funny.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Not that he would have made a difference, but you know what kind of message?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: They've been, you know, he was his coach back in Philadelphia and he used to pull up from the game back then if he hasn't learned in 27 years of playing in the league.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So anyway, I hate Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So unfortunately, it doesn't get any better.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You know, if we'd played Minnesota, you know, a month, month and a half ago, we might have been fine, but Kirk Cousins decided, you know, he's he's something better than Matt Moore.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it depends on which Kirk Cousins shows up on Sunday.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's see.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: We went to Kirk Cousins from the last weeks of August and first weeks of September.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's go to better stuff.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: How about that game, wasn't it?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, 48-41, I think.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: It was.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: It was uh So how many of us sat here and thought a week ago that both KU and K-State would win?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you were a betting man, you could uh could have made a lot of money.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Well, you wouldn't have had any left because you'd have been you'd lost it all earlier in the season.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: What a game.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: It was it was amazing.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: My wife and I and uh Were you there?
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: We were there.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Um and yeah, we we uh I asked her when we were up 48-23.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: I said, hey, are we storming the field?
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: And and she said, uh I don't know if I want to.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And then when it got down to it, we were so exhausted for being stressed out from the four-minute review that happened that we just went home.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: So wow.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: But that uh I think that put us back in the rankings.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So I think K-State's ranked again.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I don't I didn't look at what they're ranked, but number 22.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Number 22.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And we got a bowl game on the horizon, probably.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I notice uh K-State fans seem a little worried about this weekend.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: We should be.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because a miracle happened.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Massive day miracle.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech player helps Kansas to first conference.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: That's a big win.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Is this a newspaper title or is this your title?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: That is a newspaper title.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I couldn't find anything that just said Kansas spanks them.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: There was nothing like that.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It was all it was all Texas Tech hands Kansas the win.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You know, massive gaff by Texas Tech Flair.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: You know, it's just so mean.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But I did put the picture of the Kansas guy going, Well, thank you for that gift with 10 seconds to go or whatever it was.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: You know, you got to give KU credit, though, because they were down 17-0, came back, and they were down like 34-21 and battled back, had you know, eight kicks blocked and still won the game.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and it goes to show you, you know, Les Miles is doing something right, their offensive coordinator's doing something right.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: So I think we should be a little uh a little leery heading into this matchup because we didn't beat them by much last year.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I think we only beat them by three points.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So now historically though, the visiting team plays better, and the home team plays a little scared, though, right, in this series?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Just kind of depends on the on the talent.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Last couple years, it's outside of last year, it's been uh kind of a one-sided deal.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but you get KU with some momentum, and um you know, it's kind of scary what could happen.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: You heard it here first.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: We have a prediction.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Anyone predicting KU in this game?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Who thinks KU's gonna win?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey, there's two loyal fans.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: What?
- 5:01unknown: I'm a K-Jay fan, but I just know they're gonna be like the last two weeks.
- 5:09unknown: K U in, they're gonna be out.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So now I know you, Dennis.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: You're the father of my daughter-in-law.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I think you're just one of those negative guys where if I pick the other team, then my team will win.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: My goodness.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So we got another big weekend.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: All right, let's uh talk about Maxwell.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So we have uh seven chapters to go.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: We're gonna take two this morning, take two next week, two the final week.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And uh we got the law of victory.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Hey, so anyway, after we talked yesterday, I was thinking who illustrates the law of victory?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Leaders find a way for the team to win better than Skyler Thompson.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: You know, he personally carried it in, you know, on TV, they're going, watch out for the quarterback.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: He's gonna run it again, and he did.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: He'd stand back there.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm amazed how K-State does this every year.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: The quarterback stands there and he surveys the whole thing and the line holds him, and then he decides where to run.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So give the guy credit.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: He did, he did who he did a great job on Saturday.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: But uh, this this law of victory is just like this title says is that leaders find a way for their team to win.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Uh and Maxwell says that victorious leaders have one thing in common.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: They share an unwillingness to accept defeat.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and the I think the other thing about this is that the alternative to losing is completely unacceptable to them.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Like they can't stomach the idea of not winning.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: They need to be victorious.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Um and we were talking yesterday at lunch.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: I think there's there's a fine line with with this law of victory.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: No, I'm kidding, I agree.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Um and and I'll tell you the fine line.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: So we're here at lunch, we were talking about just kind of competitive spirits and uh this, that, and the other.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: And I was telling Jim, when I was in high school, when I would go out on the football field, whenever I'd cross the white line onto the field, uh, I used to get angry with the people on the other team because I was angry that they thought that they could compete with me.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that's the law of victory.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I think that's the law of pride.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And there's a fine line between the law of pride and the law of victory.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I think the law of victory, leaders find a way for their team to win because that's the best thing for their team to have happen.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: People who are prideful just want to win because they want to look good.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: That was me in high school.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to win because I wanted to look good.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and leaders, I think, always find a way to have like the best situation, the best outcome.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: They know what victory looks like and they do whatever it takes for their team to get there.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, and he says the best leaders feel compelled to rise to a challenge, to do everything in their power to achieve victory for their people.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, I think every crisis, uh, any, you know, any bad situation is a is an opportunity for a leader to rise up, to rise up to a challenge and to say, hey, we're gonna look, we're gonna take the situation and we're gonna win from it.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna accept defeat.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: We might lose, but we're not gonna accept it.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: We're gonna continue to push forward because in their view, this is what leaders think about uh themselves.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Leadership is res the leadership is responsible.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: You know, to be a leader, you have to be responsible.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Losing is unacceptable.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Your passion as a leader uh is is unquenchable.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Your creativity uh in victory is essential.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Quitting is absolutely unthinkable.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: We like you never think about quitting, you never think about giving up.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Uh your commitment to your team, to the task, and the things that need to get done is unquestionable.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: And if you do all these things, that victory um is inevitable.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Uh and so you know, every every coach has their kind of uh, you know, these are our goals, this is how we're gonna get to success.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: You look at Bill Snyder, he has his 16 goals for success.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Um Bill Belichick, his main line is do your job and only your job.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Uh Chris Kleiman, win the dang day.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: You know, you keep pounding the stone.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Uh Maxwell has his We're getting less, you know, you start at the top of intelligence and we're getting down.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: We lost 50 points of IQ on each one of those.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: So now we're gonna go down another with Maxwell.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Uh no, I'm kidding.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Uh but Maxwell has his three components to victory.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: So if you want to win, what do you what do you need to have?
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: What do you need to do to achieve victory?
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Number one is a unity of vision.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Um, teams succeed only when their players have a unified vision.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: And it's irregardless of talent and irregardless of potential.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: That it's you can't win and you won't win championships if everybody on the team has a different agenda.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You just can't do it.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, number two is a diversity of skills.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Uh you can't have a hockey team full of goalies, you can't have a football team full of quarterbacks, uh, you can't have an organization full of managers.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: You need to have a diversity of skills uh because you you need that diversity of talent in order to succeed.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And then number three, uh, you need a leader that's dedicated to victory and raising players to the potential.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Uh he has a quote in the book by Lou Holtz, uh old Notre Dame coach who says, um, you can't win without good athletes, but you can lose with them.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And the difference between the two is coaching.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Umity of vision is not gonna happen spontaneously.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Um you can have the right players with the right uh skill sets and never be able to come together.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: It's a leader's responsibility to make number one, two, and three happen.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: To be able to communicate the vision, to be able to staff the team with a diverse set of skills and to get the people, the employees, the players, whoever it is on their team uh to reach their full potential.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: He also tells another interesting story about Woodman.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he loves Woodman.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he does.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Uh and I just want to share quick quickly.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Uh he maybe this was in another chapter, but and we'll probably get to this, but like he never focused on scouting the other opponent.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: He always focused on his team and getting them to their full potential because he knew if they reached their full potential, he would it it didn't matter what came up, it didn't matter what who the opponent was.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, he had the advantage of getting by far the best five basketball high schoolers in America.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: So that made good sense.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: So just as uh as application, um what what does victory look like in your life?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Your job and your sphere of influence as a leader.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Do you accept losing in any capacity?
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: It's okay to lose, but do you accept it?
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Are you okay with it?
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Um the three steps, which which can you implement to help guide your team to victory?
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Um you need to communicate the vision clearer?
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Do you need to get everybody on board?
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Do you need to staff your team better with people who have the different skill sets?
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Or is it your job as a leader to raise them up to their fullest potential?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Uh I also thought about this as I was driving here, and I just felt compelled to share it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Um, when we think about the church, um when we come together as a body of believers, do we have a unity of vision?
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: We come together on a Sunday morning, do each one of us have a different agenda?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Do we know what victory looks like for us as a church?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Do we embrace diversity?
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: You know, uh in Corinthians it talks about uh the body of believers.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: You got a hand, foot, we can't say to each other you don't need each other.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Um we're in this thing together.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, do we do we raise each other up?
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: As Colossians says that we we struggle with all of his energy, that we might prover that we might present everybody perfect in Christ.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Is there unity?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Is there there is there a victory mentality for us as a as a church, as a body of believers?
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: It's interesting you bring that up because as Sam knows in our staff meetings the last few weeks, the major question that Doug's had us discussing is what makes Topeka Bible Church unique, different?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Uh what do we do well that maybe uh you know every church is good at something?
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: So, you know, actually started about a month ago, you know, when we each wrote down stuff and he put it so then we've been discussing, okay, which of these things, like we stayed downtown, you know, intentionally we stayed downtown or where there's other churches, you know, and one of the reasons we did that, and diversity, of course, was part of that.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And, you know, what are the things that TBC does well?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: And so yesterday it was.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: So how do we graph that so that we major on the things that we do well so that we're victorious in those?
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: That we focus on maybe not attendance, but we focus on things that matter more, like changed lives.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: And how do we do that when some of those things are more difficult to track?
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, yeah, that's a good question.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And you know, you and I were talking yesterday, and I'd I'd like to throw this out.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: You know, I was because I asked you, I said, one thing I can never figure out is um in different, is it possible in different sports or in different activities, in some of them to be always a victory guy?
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And in the second, you know, in the other one, you know, I was sharing with you that wherever I was in in chess, even in the championships in the state of Oregon, there's just so I knew I was playing against better guys at times, probably better, but I would sit at the table, it's kind of like you looking at the guy across the line.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: I'm going, I'm not gonna let that guy make me out to be stupid or something.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: And so I ended up not losing.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: In fact, wherever I was, you know, you get up to even seminary, and so I was always number one.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: But then it came to ping pong, which basically my childhood was all about ping pong.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So, but in both college and seminary, that's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight years, every year I finished second in ping pong.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And um at times it was really fun because it was my best friend who was first in college.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: One time we finished, we had the final game at halftime of a girls' basketball game out on the court, and it was really fun, and we'd stage part of it where you know I'd get way back as he would slam, and then I would come forward and slam and he'd run back.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: But but in seminary, this really tall Swedish guy who beat me the last two years for the championship named Jan said to me something I've never forgotten after that last time.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: He said, Jim, you're as good as I am.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: But he said, you know, I I get the feeling every year that you're afraid to lose.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And he says, um, and so you play in key points, not all out.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: You're afraid you're gonna miss the table or something, and so you just don't hit like that.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: And he says, I have no fears about that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So I wonder if it, you know, and it's the same with basketball where, you know, growing up, I I remember at the Y or at other places I'd play in college.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: I I would like to take, I wanted to take the last shot.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I wanted to be on the line at the end of the game.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: But in golf, I'm just the opposite.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: If I hit it, you know, you some of you guys know what it's like in golf, you finally hit a career drive and you're ahead of the other three guys in the fairway, it's the 18th hole, you're playing for what's really important to you, which is a large coke, you know, when you get to the 19th green there, and so forth.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: But for the life of you, every time you stink and choke, hitting that iron to the green, you just don't.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: You always hit in the sand, you duff it off to the side or whatever, and some guy who's 40 yards behind you puts it on and beats you.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: So, what is that about?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: I don't understand.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: I told you yesterday.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I I really like the the difference between um are you when are you playing not to lose or are you playing to win?
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Again, another fine line of if you're playing to win, you're gonna go all out.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: You're gonna sell out.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: You can do whatever you need to do to win.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Um you're playing not to lose, you uh you're worried again, I think, more about your perception and about your your you know, I don't want to come across as a loser.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Nobody wants to be around a loser.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: It's like, man, go, go achieve, go win, go, go, you know, go win.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I think I need a shrink.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: So anyway, and by the way, uh, yeah, so you actually you went to this already because you were talking about, you know, the three steps in diversity.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And there's a couple verses that fit in with this.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but many advisors make victory.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So the Bible does care about victory and the startling verse that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 9.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Don't you know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize run in such a way as to get the prize?
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, let me let's zoom to this is a really fascinating law for me.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: The law of momentum, a momentum is a leader's best friend.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: So, did anybody see the Monday night football game this week?
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Miami versus Pittsburgh.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: So Derek and I watched it and Paul.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: So here's the deal: Pittsburgh hasn't lost on a Monday night uh televised game in like 17, I mean, since like 9-11 or something.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: It's just been ridiculous.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Miami's on Miami hasn't won a game this year.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: And yet Miami comes out, and it's like in the first quarter, Miami can do anything at once.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: You're not surprised they're up 14-0.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Mason Rudolph, who's the coach of Pittsburgh, looks like what does he look like, Paul?
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: He looks like he's never played in his life.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: He looks terrible.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And Miami could have been up like 21-0 or whatever.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: So still, if it's 14-3 with 10 seconds to go before halftime approximately.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: And Pittsburgh's at the 50-yard line, hoping to gain another 15 yards so he can kick a field goal, get in 14-6.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: But I mean, Miami's won the first half.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: They really have.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: And then, for some reason, Miami sits back in this prevent defense, which means most of them stand in the five-yard line, 40 yards away.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: They send the rest of them rushing the passer.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Passer dumps it over the middle, the guy runs into the end zone.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: The whole momentum of the game changes.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: And this is the law of momentum.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And those of you who've played sports know what it's like to be on a basketball team or some other sports team where it's sometimes you get in the flow, and it's like, you know, you just can't lose.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Everything you do works.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Today, uh, you know, you always are hearing people now, especially in the NBA, talk about, or even or even college basketball, drive it downhill.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Well, there's no thing downhill on the basketball court, but what they mean by that is once you get started going toward the hoop, there's a momentum there.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: And his point is that uh momentum is a leader's best friend because you start heading that way.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: It's interesting that KU's game uh was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, just like, you know, the Chiefs' game.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, not KU, the Chiefs' game on Sunday was back and forth.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: But Kansas State's game was a game to some extent of momentum, where they had so much momentum in the first half that they got a lead that it turned out was too big for Oklahoma to come back on.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And this is just one you cannot read an article about that game.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Here's just one I pulled off of uh of the web.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Kansas State continued its ridiculous run of momentum at this point, scoring on their seventh, uh, seventh straight possession.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: So um sometimes momentum just carries you.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And the question is can that happen in a business?
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: The first couple sentences of the chapter go like this all leaders face the challenge of creating change in an organization.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: The key is momentum, the big Mo.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: You can't steer a car that isn't, I change from a ship, who cares about that?
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: You can't steer a car that isn't moving forward.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Good leaders understand.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That to change directions, you first have to create forward progress, momentum.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: So he has all of these, he has these instructions, concentrate on what you can do, not what you can't, celebrate victories no matter how small, Jerry.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: I noticed in your book, I was sitting over there scanning it.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: You really circled that, you thought that was a great idea.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: I agree with you, you know, that's that when you're running a business, you celebrate everybody's victories.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: And the illustration he gives both in the uh first edition and in the revised edition is of the movie Stand and Deliver, which is based on a true story.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: This is 1978.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Jamie Escalante goes to Garfield High School in, I don't remember, New York City or something, a school which has no discipline, school where everybody's failing out, and he takes it, and nine years later, you know, 400 students are taking a, you know, uh calculus test to get a to qualify out of calculus in college.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: It's just transformative, but what happened is he was fighting against all kinds of opposition, but once the thing started getting rolling, it moved from seven students his first year to 20 the second year, and finally was half of the school.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: So it was a great movie, too.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: How many of you saw that movie?
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Did you?
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: All of us who were over 70.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm kidding.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: I'm kidding.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: I'm kidding.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: So he says, uh, momentum begins with you.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: You got to be passionate.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And momentum makes a team, makes a leader look better than he actually is.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, it exaggerates everything.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: And this is true in the church as well.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: You know, I feel so sorry.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Go to a pastor's conference, and you know, you're there with pastors of churches of 100 or 200 that have never ever had any momentum, partly because they maybe come from a small town or something.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, they never have that feeling that we've had, you know, where you can you can do no wrong.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: You know, we just have people coming in and you and you're going, we don't do anything better than anybody else, but there's this kind of downhill flow.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: If I could add a couple things, uh a couple points that he makes about momentum.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Um and it's this last two points of seven.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: It says momentum is a leader's responsibility.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Um how often do you think it's it that's that's a hard pill to swallow.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: That it's it's our job as leaders in an organization to create the momentum before it progress, to keep everybody on the same page, keep pushing forward, and then the momentum begin it actually begins inside the leader.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Um there's a quote in here by an inspirational writer who says, You cannot kindle a fire in any other heart until it's burning within your own.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Uh and so I was just asking myself, I wrote this down.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I said, What is my vision and how well do I communicate?
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Can I can I create and can I inspire other people?
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Can you do that?
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Can you get the people around you can you spark them?
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Uh can you can you make them want to go forward and pursue excellence with all they have and and and and achieve victory, even if it means them doing something extra, something harder, can you create the momentum, not only create it, but keep it rolling forward for the best of everybody that's around you?
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: So can I ask you a question?
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: So you have a gift of exhortation.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: So I can see you pumping up, you know, people.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: And uh used to be the chaplain, whatever that means for Topeka's football team, uh semi-pro football team, uh, because Warren Seites, who went to our church, you know, was the coach.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: So I'd go in there and he would, I mean, he'd be yelling at halftime, and I mean it was it was great.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And then if he said a bad word, he'd look over at me and apologize to the chaplain, you know.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: So um, but I mean, so but your coach, you know, you had a famous coach at K-State you played under.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: He doesn't seem to me like an exhorter.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: He seems to me more like a teacher, more like a grandfather type, more like a guy.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: So how how at halftime would he whip you guys up, or did he?
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: How do you get that momentum if you don't have the gift of exhortation?
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Um Bill Snyder was really good at just communicating what he saw in us.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, if we were not playing well, uh, man, I know that you can do better.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I've seen it in you in practice.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: We've worked really hard.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: And he would say it just like that.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: No excitement, nothing.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: The locker room would be quiet.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: We as soon as he'd leave the room, we'd be like, all right, come on, let's pull up ourselves up.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Uh but he just had a way to communicate to us, hey, I know that you guys are better than this.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, I know that we're better, and I know that we can achieve so much more if we if we stick to the things that we know how to do and just we just keep going.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: And he'd then he'd recite one of his 16 laws of success and then you know leave the room.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: And um, but I don't I don't think you need to have this, you don't need to be a rah-rah speaker.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I think you need to take the gifts and abilities that you have and and just be able to communicate, communicate something that people can like they want to become and they like they they can see, model it for them, and it be I think that begins the inspiration inside somebody else.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Good answer.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: So there are a bunch of good questions uh that we could ask, but here's here's two.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Rodney, I slap down.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Where in your life are you resolved to refuse to lose?
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: So that would just be an area to talk about.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: So apparently for me it's not ping-pong, yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: And no, or golf.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, number two, how can you develop positive momentum in your life, in your marriage, in your job, stuff like that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Next week, uh, law of sacrifice will be one of our two laws.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: All right, lead us in prayer, will you?
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Lord, uh, we thank you for today, and we thank you just for your grace and your mercy that you've bestowed upon us, Lord, that um we're undeserving.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Uh and you've you've just showered it on us, you've lavished it.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, you've given us a new life that uh that we get to experience.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Uh and I pray, Lord, that we would walk in the privilege that you've given us.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Um, Lord, that we would walk together as men, that we would walk together as a body of believers, that we'd come alongside one another to love, uh, exhort, correct, uh, and guide each other uh to you.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: And Lord, I pray that you would help us to be the man that you've called us to be.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Lord, that you know the plans that you have for us, Lord, that you've created us for yourself, and I pray that we would uh we would live a life that's victorious uh in you.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Uh you would we would know what that is, Lord, that we would pursue that with our whole hearts.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Lord, and I pray that when we meet you face to face, uh, Lord, it would be a great day of celebration.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Uh we pray these things and in your son's name.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Amen.
