Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode 839 - Stavros Giannopoulos (The Atlas Moth) Talks Motherless' Debut, and More
Transcript
- 0:00I had like kind of a vision to begin with where it was just
- 0:02like, you know, Lemmy was in Hawkland and then he got kicked
- 0:05out from his Prague band and he started Motörhead.
- 0:08Well, I mean, I think he kicked out of the Atlas Mob and that's
- 0:10still a band. But that's my Prague band.
- 0:11And without Waves, it's like your guys Prague band.
- 0:13So you know, so this is our Motörhead.
- 0:21Hey, what's up everybody? It's Kefi.
- 0:24It goes cultman.com. I am joined by my old buddy
- 0:27Stavros. You know him best from the Atlas
- 0:29Moth, but he has a new band or new to you called Motherless
- 0:32with a brand new album coming out.
- 0:33How you doing buddy? I'm good man, Good to see you.
- 0:37Yeah, it's been a while. Please introduce your your pooch
- 0:40here to us. This is Modge Podge.
- 0:42He's a very good boy. He's a little weird, but he's a
- 0:45good boy. He wants to be involved in
- 0:47everything. So that's OK.
- 0:49Most you know dogs have that personality.
- 0:51Cats could care less about what the fuck you do as long as they
- 0:54get fed and their boxes changed. And dogs.
- 0:57Dogs want to be in it. Yeah, this dude wants to be my
- 1:00like my my Robin at all times to my.
- 1:03Dad, I mean, you know, you could be a you, you are kind of a Dark
- 1:06Knight, the hero we need, you know, the hero that needs to be.
- 1:10Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10Please make sure you mentioned offline your sister runs a
- 1:14rescue for pities. So please send us a link where
- 1:16we can help support if anything. Bully breed rescue but I'll send
- 1:20the link for. Great name.
- 1:21That's a mouthful. It's been around for 30 years,
- 1:25right? So it's probably a little bit
- 1:26before, like, you know, everyone was really thinking of domain
- 1:29names and such. So that's also trying to get
- 1:31yourself a disservice in that regard.
- 1:32But what do you No, no, no. Well, you know, it's OK.
- 1:35We, you know, and also like honestly, at this point, with
- 1:38everything going on in the world and the, you know, media and and
- 1:42social media, our brains got about this much capacity left.
- 1:46Yes, exactly to remember shit. But how are you doing?
- 1:49First and foremost, I said, how you been?
- 1:51I've been, I've been, I'm pretty well with the moment, you know,
- 1:54it's been, it's been a rough journey to get to here, you
- 1:57know, it's been what, like 7 years since I've done anything
- 2:02in the music world. It's been a while, you know, the
- 2:04pandemic kind of kicked my ass like you did everybody.
- 2:07I feel bad even saying anything because I know somebody had
- 2:09worse than me. But you know, no one had a good
- 2:11time, you know? But here we are.
- 2:13Thou shall prevail, you know. So still breathing, still
- 2:17living, you know, can still walk and still see, can still hear.
- 2:21No complaints. Best of all can still think for
- 2:23yourself and that is super important today because
- 2:27everything it all came true Orwell I have a pin on my battle
- 2:31vest that's it's just George Orwell's face and he says I told
- 2:35you yeah you're. Fucking right.
- 2:37I fucking told you every. Single days writer.
- 2:40And people ask me about the two most asked about things on that
- 2:43vest. They're that pin and my Prince
- 2:45pin from the Prince museum I went to in Amsterdam.
- 2:49Like, you have a Prince pin just randomly on your vest of all
- 2:52these things. I'm like, yes, I love Prince.
- 2:53I don't care. So yeah, man, motherless, right.
- 2:55So you you, you know, like the pandemic did kick everyone's
- 2:58ass. I know introverts thrived.
- 3:00Everybody else, you know, anyone who was making banana bread and
- 3:04working from home. But a lot of people suffered.
- 3:07But like, you know, you made it through to the other side.
- 3:10And I know we haven't heard from the Atlas in a minute, and we'll
- 3:12talk about that later because I know there's stuff going on.
- 3:15But Mother Motherless came together and it's kind of like
- 3:19two of the best bands from Chicago come together and make a
- 3:22band, basically. Right.
- 3:23Yeah, yeah, basically, yeah. It was funny, man.
- 3:26So Alice Muff was on hiatus and we can talk about that a bit
- 3:30later, I guess. But me and Alex, the bass player
- 3:34went to go see Iron Maiden and, you know, as one does, right?
- 3:38And it's like probably 2022, late in 2022.
- 3:42And what's Iron Maiden? And afterwards you're just like,
- 3:45man, you know what? We just start another band.
- 3:47You know, we're like, yeah, I'm like, you know what?
- 3:48Why go? We start another band?
- 3:50Why not fuck it, You know, like. And I wound up going to pick up
- 3:54my girlfriend at the time from work.
- 3:57And Gary, the drummer Without Waves is on in Motherless while
- 4:00the show was at the bar that she worked at.
- 4:02And he literally was like, hey, what do you what do you?
- 4:04What's up with your band? And before he even say anything,
- 4:06he was like, let's start a band. And I was like, although you
- 4:08mentioned that, you know, so literally I was like, all right,
- 4:11well, I guess this is the universe.
- 4:13Tell me to get off my ass. So here we are.
- 4:14And I was like, yeah, we should probably get another guitar
- 4:16player because I don't want to ride all these riffs.
- 4:18And he was like, yeah, we should get Anthony from Without Waves.
- 4:20All right, there's the band. So, you know, yeah, it was like
- 4:23kind of one of those things where I was like very much like
- 4:26I had, I had like kind of a vision to begin with where it
- 4:28was just like, you know, Lemmy was in Hawkwind and then he got
- 4:31kicked out from his Prague band and he started Motörhead.
- 4:34Well, I mean, I think he kicked out of the Atlas love and that's
- 4:36still a band, but that's my Prague band.
- 4:38And without Waves, it's like your guys Prague band.
- 4:39So let's start fucking Motörhead, you know?
- 4:42So this is our Motörhead. That's kind of like the whole
- 4:44deal. And, you know, that kind of
- 4:45tracks now that I think about the record, I've been listening
- 4:48to that. That makes a lot of sense.
- 4:50We know Gary a little bit from some of his work and, you know,
- 4:55incredible. Yeah, the 8000 of his bands and
- 4:59and he's incredible drummer and yeah.
- 5:01So you guys come together and is it the usual process you do?
- 5:05Because it's not only your you know, you are the instigator of
- 5:09the other project. So like, how did this band
- 5:11collaborate to write these songs that you all bring in parts?
- 5:14How did you do? Yeah.
- 5:15Well, you know, I mean, even with the Atlas month, it's
- 5:17always been a very collaborative process, you know what I mean?
- 5:19Like I think that I always kind of have like a strong visual.
- 5:22I think it always kind of people always think that I'm like some
- 5:24weird mastermind because I always have like the visual
- 5:27aspect of it because like I'm the art guy.
- 5:30But yeah, it was more or less just like as the the real thing
- 5:33with like the difference is I think that both without Waves
- 5:35and the Atlas Moth, I think I can speak for them because we've
- 5:38talked about this so much, is that we both of those bands will
- 5:42one of us will bring a riff or, you know, whatever.
- 5:45And then someone else will add on a riff.
- 5:47And then we'll write a song and we'll demo it.
- 5:49And then we'll, you know, RIP it apart and rewrite it and keep
- 5:53kind of like revising, revising, you know, until it's perfect.
- 5:56You know, like, for instance, like Komen Noir was like written
- 6:00and demoed and rewritten and re demoed and rewritten.
- 6:03And we, we really, really put work into that.
- 6:07And not to say that's a, that's like a bad way of doing
- 6:09anything. I mean, the results, you know,
- 6:11proofs in the pudding. I think the Komen Noir is an
- 6:13incredible record, but the same time I want to do something that
- 6:17was like more punk rock. I want to do something that was
- 6:19more like capturing a moment. I always think that every single
- 6:22album a band does should be like kind of us just a snapshot of
- 6:26where everyone is in their lives or like just what you're doing
- 6:29at the moment, you know? And sometimes I can get lost as
- 6:32like a band goes on and kind of like progresses in the writing,
- 6:36you know? So like this was like a very
- 6:37much like a let's be immediate, let's be right now and like
- 6:40let's not overthink it, you know, and like let's let's strip
- 6:43it down too. Like let's not try to be a crazy
- 6:46progressive metal band. Like let's try to have some fun
- 6:49and be Motörhead, you know, like I wanted to have nothing but D
- 6:52beats. That was my whole thing, you
- 6:53know, and didn't quite work out that way.
- 6:55You. Know well I don't know that Gary
- 6:57can just only play D beats I think that's like asking him
- 7:03the. Same thing with Anthony, man.
- 7:04The guy's like an incredible fucking guitar player too.
- 7:06Like I was asking him, I'm like, no snip ball, you know?
- 7:09Like he was like, yeah, you know, And there were some things
- 7:11that stuck in on there. We were like, yeah, well, that's
- 7:13not simple. How do I how do I deal with
- 7:16this? I'm not I'm not one to ever like
- 7:19be like no, no, like I'm, I'm a big, I'm a big, I've always been
- 7:22a big proprietor of try it. Let's let's try it out.
- 7:25You know, like I don't ever want to shoot any idea down
- 7:27creatively because I don't want anyone to shoot my ideas down.
- 7:29Great. But like I always want to try
- 7:30something. So if someone feels strongly
- 7:31about it, right, you know, So yeah, just like more like just
- 7:34kind of focusing on having fun and being immediate and kind of,
- 7:38you know, balls to the wall, you know, like, I wanted it to be a
- 7:42aggressive. I mean, I'm, I was, I still am.
- 7:44I'm feeling aggressive. I'm feeling pissed off.
- 7:46I'm feeling angry, like things suck, you know?
- 7:49Really not good. Yeah, like I didn't.
- 7:51Worst timeline of all time. I don't know what happened.
- 7:55This is the multiverse. Send me to another one.
- 7:57Exactly. Now and on that note, everyone
- 8:00fucking pinpoints the Cubs World Series win.
- 8:03Oh, I want to point out something about that being a
- 8:05huge Cubs if the Indians won the commanders.
- 8:10Right. Or whatever they are, yeah.
- 8:11I don't, I don't pay attention to the American League, but it
- 8:14had one. That means that 2 Cleveland
- 8:17sports teams would have broken a drought of championships because
- 8:21the Cavs won earlier. That would be way more fucked up
- 8:24just throwing that. That's fair.
- 8:25Yeah. I think the universe, I'm
- 8:27surprised that as an as an only American League, mostly guys, a
- 8:30Yankees fan from New York now lives in California.
- 8:34Fuck me. But just as just like when I
- 8:37lived in Boston when we met, oh fuck, why am I here?
- 8:40But I had a great time there. I've been having a great time
- 8:42out here. Life is pretty good overall.
- 8:45And yeah, like, I think when the Red Sox won, I was surprised the
- 8:49universe didn't unmake itself. But I actually said like, OK,
- 8:52things were trending down. And then Slayer retired in the
- 8:55end of 2019, and you had literally the clock turned over
- 8:58to 2020 and it was like, wow, what shit.
- 9:01This is what fresh hell. And so, yeah, not, you know
- 9:05what, man? I know a lot of Cubbies fans and
- 9:07a lot of close friends of mine are from Chicago and, and I love
- 9:11the town. That was very good to me.
- 9:13Midwestern niceness is a real thing.
- 9:16And it's a clean and beautiful city for the most part.
- 9:19Just like, you know, everywhere else.
- 9:20There's rich, there's bore, there's ghettos, there's giant
- 9:22glistening cities and I love Chicago so firmly.
- 9:27I was really happy for all my long-suffering friends that got
- 9:30a ring. You had the Bulls and that kind
- 9:32of like put, I think that pushed off the Cubs from winning for a
- 9:35while. Blackhawks and Bears.
- 9:37The Bears kind of blew. It last time they were anywhere
- 9:41near it so. Yeah, but I don't know, they got
- 9:44the building blocks now, but. And I like that.
- 9:47I watched that Hard Knocks on HBO.
- 9:49That was pretty good last year. They'll be there eventually,
- 9:51just like my team will be back eventually.
- 9:53But yeah, Cubbies, you know, good for the world.
- 9:55But Do You Feel Safe is a very ominous album title.
- 10:00No, I don't. But just for you.
- 10:03What does that mean to you and you guys?
- 10:05Exactly that, man. You know, I think everyone is,
- 10:09you know, it's so funny, man, because like the last time I was
- 10:12doing interviews for a record was 2018, right?
- 10:15And it was a whole different world, you know?
- 10:17And part of me, like, it kind of it sucks.
- 10:20I hate to like, you know, like it's almost like I almost have
- 10:22like preface like everything nowadays.
- 10:24Like I didn't vote for Trump. Like, I am not a right winger at
- 10:28all. And I do think that some things
- 10:31though are like, man, I have to watch everything everyone says.
- 10:34It's not even that I'm that controversial person.
- 10:36I'm a pretty goddamn liberal dude.
- 10:38And I tend to not want to really want to offend anybody, but I
- 10:41also have to call bullshit on some things.
- 10:44Everyone talks about so many things being, you know, everyone
- 10:48wants this. You know, everything's inclusive
- 10:50and everything. We're building a safe space for
- 10:53you. You feel, savior, How fucking
- 10:55safe does anybody feel? I don't care.
- 10:58You can build up these four walls around me all you want and
- 11:01tell me that I'm safe here. But like, these four walls still
- 11:04exist in this fucked up place that like has that that's become
- 11:08the world, man. Like I don't fucking feel safe.
- 11:11I'm disabled, you know, I have spina bifida, something I've
- 11:14never really talked about much, you know, over the years because
- 11:17mostly because I just don't want any sympathy for because there's
- 11:20a lot of children out there that like really are affected by the
- 11:23disease, the illness, whatever I call it.
- 11:26And I, I'm relatively unscathed, you know, like I basically deal
- 11:30with pain every day, but I've been dealing with that my entire
- 11:32life. It is what it is at this point.
- 11:33Like some kids don't walk, so I never really think about it.
- 11:36But I am a disabled person. Like I, I, there's so much
- 11:41that's fucked in this world right now.
- 11:43Like I don't feel safe. I don't feel safe.
- 11:44We were, I don't know how it's going to be when I'm an older
- 11:47man, you know, like looking for any sort of government
- 11:50assistance or anything like that, because I'm basically on
- 11:52that path, right? Like I'm a degenerative disease,
- 11:55like, so, yeah. No, I mean, like, do you
- 11:57actually feel safe? Dude, ask yourself that
- 11:59question. How fucking safe do you feel
- 12:02anywhere at any times? Because I don't think.
- 12:04Anybody should right on. Thank you for sharing.
- 12:06I know you haven't talked about that until just recently.
- 12:09You actually were very I didn't know that and I appreciate you
- 12:12sharing that because that takes a certain risk to share personal
- 12:16stuff. We live in a toxic society,
- 12:18especially on you know, people were perpetually online and
- 12:21they're not out in the world making art and doing shit and
- 12:24having conversations with people.
- 12:26They're in their little moms basement or whatever angrily
- 12:29typing with one finger each, probably fucking commenting on
- 12:35metal archives reviews and shit like my friends over at Lamb
- 12:39Goat. No disrespect but there's a
- 12:41reason why Ghost Coat has never had a comment section because I
- 12:44know where it will go and I don't want to deal with that
- 12:46shit myself. And I have my own.
- 12:48I've been on a health journey the last couple of years with
- 12:50mental health, mental illness honestly, and physical problems.
- 12:54I'm sort of starting to come through it, but like it's going
- 12:57to be a lifetime battle because I didn't take care of this.
- 13:00You at least like knew enough like oh, I have an illness I
- 13:03have to manage, right. I did not.
- 13:05I didn't, I was like, oh, live fast, die young, leave a bad
- 13:08looking corpse, not be here a long time.
- 13:10I'm here for a good time, not a long time.
- 13:12Now that I want to be here, I'm like, oh fuck me, now I have to
- 13:15work on this sheet because I didn't take minutes.
- 13:18I missed that 27 window, you know, now that I had to actually
- 13:21look down the fucking barrel of being a, an elderly man, you
- 13:25know, like, but I mean then so it's like, dude, like there are
- 13:28plenty of people out there that like do need this stuff.
- 13:31Do that do need like, you know, Medicaid and all that kind of
- 13:34things. I don't want to necessarily get
- 13:36super political, but like, God, do I feel like this is a fucked
- 13:40up place to be living and like, like, I don't feel safe for
- 13:43anybody. I don't think anybody should
- 13:45feel sick. I think everyone should be
- 13:46fucking. Angry, yeah, question
- 13:48everything, but not to a point where like you also are
- 13:51irrational and can't debate properly with people.
- 13:54But you know, it's like, don't engage.
- 13:56It's all so it's a fucking problem.
- 13:57And what facts are like? Yes, well.
- 14:01Yeah, not do your own research. I mean you.
- 14:04Know what a fact is? We know each, we know each
- 14:06other. Ghost Cults around like almost
- 14:0813 years your band has been around, you know you, I know you
- 14:12in the music world, you know, for almost 20 years since I
- 14:15became acquainted with you, one of my you know, one of my first
- 14:18interviews for Ghost Cult was you in person.
- 14:21We we, we've done a bunch of things over the phone and in
- 14:23person and Zoom once before. And you know, I always feel like
- 14:28you are genuinely who you are in real life.
- 14:31And, and also in these situations, some people are
- 14:34like, well, either per music guy, me is this guy and then the
- 14:37regular guy, me is that guy. You're you respect that.
- 14:41Yeah. And I don't think you know how
- 14:42to not be you, which is cool. I think that's actually a cool
- 14:45thing. But we're going through some
- 14:48shit as a society. And you're supposed to judge a
- 14:51society also without soapboxing too bad, as I often do.
- 14:55You know, you judge the society how you treat its weakest
- 14:58people, not its strongest people.
- 14:59And I, I've been for a long time beating on that shoe, beating
- 15:03that shoe on the table for a long time, and it's getting
- 15:06worse. And that's not good.
- 15:08Going the wrong way. Yeah.
- 15:09And there's no place to like you said, there's no place to feel
- 15:11safe, man. I think it's, I think it's a
- 15:13little bit fucking ridiculous than anyone's like this isn't
- 15:16safe. Nothing is safe.
- 15:18There's no safety right like. Stop.
- 15:20Lying to yourself and like honestly look at like what's
- 15:23going on because like the quicker everyone learns that
- 15:26there's nothing safe in this world, then like the better off
- 15:29everybody is, you know, cuz that maybe there will be some action
- 15:32to it. Right on back to the album for a
- 15:35bit. You know, first first track is
- 15:38just an absolute ear Ripper. Reptile dysfunction.
- 15:43Great song title, great play on words, and just what a banger
- 15:47riff right off the bat. That was my coffee today before
- 15:50I grabbed my cup of coffee before talking to you, I
- 15:53listened to that riff, but I listened that first song a bunch
- 15:56of times in a row. I was like, let's go.
- 15:59So what a what a what an ass kicker.
- 16:01Well, thank you. Yeah, that we just filmed a
- 16:03video for that. I got to actually send out a
- 16:05shout out to my girlfriend. She was the one that came with
- 16:07the song title for that. We joke around a lot about
- 16:11fictional song titles, and she came up with a couple on this
- 16:13record. She's pretty fucking funny.
- 16:16But yeah, that's. That was actually the last song
- 16:18written for the record. I was like, wait, I don't know
- 16:20if any of these are an opener. Here's an opener.
- 16:23So yeah, it's one of my favorite.
- 16:25Saw some of my most favorite lyrics I've ever written as
- 16:27well. You know, this record is full of
- 16:29some of my most favorite lyrics I've ever written, you know, so.
- 16:32Yeah, there's some point. There's some poignant stuff here
- 16:34I was trying to pick out from that track.
- 16:37Abrupt violence, weaponized goodwill, which I love.
- 16:40Christian Math is maybe the Best Song on here in terms of just my
- 16:43ears, just across the board, another face peeler and brutal.
- 16:48How did you split things up with Anthony on the vocals?
- 16:50Because I'm trying to pick out, because I hear all the shades of
- 16:54you and I'm not as familiar with as much as I know I like, you
- 16:57know, Anthony's work. I'm I'm trying to figure it out.
- 17:00Like where's the split? Dude, Anthony is like a fucking
- 17:03he's Wildman. That guy could do any like he he
- 17:07kind of blows me away sometimes, but I'm like, you know what
- 17:10would be cool? Like if there was like a super
- 17:13like we're all right here. But like, you know, and my vocal
- 17:16register is kind of high, you know, and he'll be like, oh, I
- 17:18got it. And he'll just fucking belt it
- 17:20out. I'm like, man, fuck you, you
- 17:23know. And he's very adamant about
- 17:26being like, you know, even on credits, Like I didn't even
- 17:28think about this kind of shit, but I was like, you know,
- 17:30whatever. I like to put everything in
- 17:32alphabetical order just so like it's like eliminates anybody
- 17:35being fucking, you know, put off and and actually, I think in
- 17:38every single one of my bands, I'm always last S you know, you
- 17:42know, so I put down Anthony. I think he went for maybe he's
- 17:45second behind Alex, but I put down Anthony and put vocals
- 17:49guitar. He goes, no, I'll put down
- 17:50guitar, vocals, super modest dude and super fucking talented
- 17:54vocally and guitar was and he does vocals actually mostly on
- 17:58Christian math. I do like it's probably on that
- 18:01song. It's like 8020 and then a
- 18:03majority of the vocals on the rest are pretty much all me.
- 18:06And he did a lot of backups and like select little parts.
- 18:11But yeah, I mean, there wasn't really much conscious thought to
- 18:13it, to be honest with you. He was like very much into, I
- 18:16think he does like he takes such a forefront.
- 18:19And without Waves, he kind of was like really been into the
- 18:22idea of kind of not being the forefront in this band, which I
- 18:25was kind of like, ah, I was kind of not necessarily hoping to be
- 18:28the forefront in another band. But you're right.
- 18:30You know, it is what it is. It's kind of like a natural spot
- 18:32for me to at this point. You know, this is not based on
- 18:35empirical evidence, but I think that there are personality types
- 18:39that probably like you have a leadership personality, you're
- 18:43charismatic, you're easy to get to know.
- 18:46I've had that pleasure. I hung out with you.
- 18:48You're super chill and very laid back most of the time, unless
- 18:52you're animated about something specific.
- 18:54But like, I think that certain band people, artists have a sort
- 18:59of a path that's laid out like, oh, I'm going to be, you know,
- 19:02just like every relationship, business, romantic, political,
- 19:06there's a push and a pull and somebody's got to be the pusher,
- 19:09the push person. And I think that's leader by
- 19:12nature. By like not any choice of my
- 19:14own. My name in the Atlas Moth has
- 19:17been fearless leader for years now yes, I did not choose and I
- 19:21did not. It's kind of funny people talk
- 19:22about that shit and like, Oh well, you're like, you're the
- 19:25leader of the Atlas. I was like first of all, like I
- 19:27never sang in a band before the Atlas moth and we tried out
- 19:30singers and I didn't want to be the singer and half the reason I
- 19:33became the singer. So I was like, you know what, I
- 19:35don't think I want some asshole talking for me anymore.
- 19:39You know what I mean? Like those, the only the reason
- 19:41that I got shoved into the fucking role, the only reason
- 19:43that I wound up doing the majority of the vocals, was
- 19:45because Dave Kush didn't want to.
- 19:48So here I am. Noted.
- 19:49Noted. Yeah, you know, Yeah, I mean,
- 19:51and yeah, it's, it's natural. It is what it is.
- 19:53I don't mind doing it. This is why you know what I
- 19:56mean. Like I don't even.
- 19:57Know, and let's let's give Alex a shout out too, because if
- 19:59you're going for that Motörhead sound as a personal, you know,
- 20:03bass player, you got to have that gritty tone and you got to
- 20:06have that very direct attack on the bass the way Lemmy did, the
- 20:10way that also compliments the other guys.
- 20:14So like Alex did a stellar job. This is like some of my favorite
- 20:17bass stuff this year that I've heard on a record.
- 20:20Yeah, he really killed it, dude. His tone was great.
- 20:23Everything really just came together with this band.
- 20:24It was like Supernatural and like we it just, it just kind of
- 20:28happened. We didn't force anything.
- 20:30It was really just kind of float out of us and this happened and
- 20:33like, shit, man. It was, it was, it was really
- 20:35easy, really fucking really easy to put this record together.
- 20:38We're really happy. With right on and you deferred
- 20:42to another artist for the artwork, which I know like even
- 20:45if you weren't doing the art yourself or the layout or
- 20:48whatever, I know you always every project you have has a
- 20:51very visual, strong visual sense.
- 20:53So I love this very distinctive artwork in a year of kind of a
- 20:57lot of blacks and Grays. There's nice a nice muted burnt
- 21:01color on this that I think fits. No, I actually I diverted to my
- 21:05buddy Rosario, who's a unexpected specter.
- 21:08On Instagram, I met Rosario the first day of kindergarten.
- 21:14We were waxing intellectual over the 89 Batman film and.
- 21:19As you do. We've been best friends since.
- 21:22So like we like literally I've known this guy for I think we
- 21:25usually do. We usually have a little
- 21:26anniversary thing every year in August from, you know, when you
- 21:29start school. So I think this is our 38th
- 21:32anniversary or some shit like that this year, 37th
- 21:34anniversary. Like he's probably the only guy
- 21:37in the entire world where he's my go to in a pinch, you know,
- 21:41like when I'm always like, oh shit, like what do I need to do?
- 21:44I forgot to make another Atlas small shirt for tour.
- 21:46Oh no, and I'm just going to go up and call Rosara really quick.
- 21:48I'm sure he's got something. You know, he's the only guy
- 21:50where I'm like, just do whatever man, you know, and you'll figure
- 21:53it out. And it's kind of the same thing.
- 21:55Like I was trying to pull off this idea I had involving like
- 21:59my fucking girlfriend naked with a pigs head and blood and all
- 22:02sorts of shit. And, you know, like, I always
- 22:06say this kind of stuff where it's like, add every one person
- 22:10you add to a project, whether it's a recording project, a
- 22:13video project, a fucking art project, wherever it is, add one
- 22:16person, add like, you know, five hours of a headache and
- 22:20scheduling and all that bullshit.
- 22:21And like, it just started, like, adding up and adding up and
- 22:24adding up and adding up where like, I could not feasibly make
- 22:27this photo shoot happen and I need to get this artwork done.
- 22:30And that's when I called my boy. So yeah, he fucking killed it,
- 22:32though. I literally was like, like, that
- 22:35kid knows me better than anybody in the entire world, You know
- 22:38what I mean? Like, literally, he's like my
- 22:40brother. So it was really easy.
- 22:42It's like, yo, dude, you know me.
- 22:43You know what I like better than anything?
- 22:45Probably better than my fucking self, in all honesty.
- 22:47You know, can you get to me by Friday?
- 22:49You know, he's like, yeah, yeah. And he fucking nailed it.
- 22:53It was like one of those things where literally I saw it.
- 22:55I'm like, fucking perfect, man. And ever lost the band was like,
- 22:58this is fucking great, you know, and now we we've adopted kind of
- 23:01like that GIMP mask is like a a mask out of sorts, you know
- 23:05which? Yeah, for better or worse, let's
- 23:08bring back the GIMP masks. I live in San Francisco, so I
- 23:11see a lot of masks here of all sorts.
- 23:14Also very like, you know, aggressive image, you know what
- 23:18I mean? Like it's very much like in your
- 23:20fucking face and it it says something.
- 23:23I don't know what it says something to something different
- 23:26to a lot of people too. You know which.
- 23:27Is great. That's correct.
- 23:29And it goes with the album and it goes with the title.
- 23:31And again, very very few times you get those things to line up
- 23:34properly. Does it make you feel safe?
- 23:38Not so much me, you know, uncomfortable.
- 23:40You feel kind of weird. But yeah, man, I dig it.
- 23:42You know, it's, we've talked a lot in the past about just
- 23:45Chicago in general and the incestuous scene there.
- 23:48So I just feel like like, you know, groups sprouting up
- 23:53between people is a natural thing there.
- 23:56But it seems like I was there a couple years ago, and it seems
- 23:59like there's still sort of a scene.
- 24:02There's still some, you know, good local bands.
- 24:04Is there anybody else you've been digging that maybe we need
- 24:07to pull our attention to beside you?
- 24:10Well, obviously me first and foremost.
- 24:14You know, The thing is, man, is that like there was you were
- 24:16around, you know, ghost Cult. I remember like really was like
- 24:19you guys are starting to start really getting your wheels
- 24:22rolling right When like that Chicago scene was like on fire,
- 24:26you know, it was like any band that started immediately had a
- 24:30record deal and had like a killer record.
- 24:32It was crazy. You know, like I don't think the
- 24:35scene is kind of walled since then.
- 24:37And like it is what it is. Everything kind of has peaks and
- 24:39valleys and you can't expect things to be on fire forever,
- 24:41you know. But like right now there's like
- 24:43definitely like a lot of like pretty killer bands starting to
- 24:46pop up. I think it's just not as focused
- 24:49here, You know, like when we kind of came up, there was just
- 24:52like a big surgeons of like whatever doom, sludge, post
- 24:56metal and then anything that had any sort of black metal tinge to
- 25:00it, whether it was like not missing with the psychedelic
- 25:03black metal or like, you know, fucking whatever, man,
- 25:05everything you had kind of having a black metal fucking
- 25:07curve to it. You know, it's like right now
- 25:10we're actually this Friday, we're at Burlington's bar here
- 25:14with three bands that are fucking great death posters on
- 25:18Brutal Panda, which is like. Fucking love death pose dude I
- 25:21love them they're so good. Post post post something.
- 25:28Post something. After something for sure.
- 25:30I don't know what the fuck it is.
- 25:31It's fucking great though. They used to be called Big Bird,
- 25:34which I think is like such a wild name.
- 25:36Like I was. I literally was like, why did
- 25:39you change it? And obviously fucking Brutal
- 25:42Panda was a little scared about releasing a record by a band
- 25:45called Big Bird, but what a name.
- 25:47And then Something is Waiting, which I do a lot of artwork for,
- 25:51I should say. By a lot, I mean all that.
- 25:53Those guys, one of my favorite dudes in the world, they are
- 25:57fucking weirdos. Like Total noise rock meets like
- 26:0080s, Glen metal meets 90s, like early groove metal.
- 26:04It's weird shit. And and then somebody not my new
- 26:07favorite guys are Baron Air who are fucking killer.
- 26:10They're like super sludgy, slow do me very bass driven.
- 26:14I think they're fucking great. There's a hardcore band here
- 26:17with like a noise element to it called Sarin, like the gas
- 26:21fucking awesome. There's a ready for death who's
- 26:25singer of indecision and and Dallas who was in Pelican and
- 26:29and Swan King and Ash Chapel. You got primal codes dude from
- 26:33the killer and Will Lindsay who was Wilson throwing him and not
- 26:36missing him. You have Bear Mace, which is a
- 26:38Gary from motherless, one of his death.
- 26:41That death metal band is amazing.
- 26:42Yeah, I love that band too. Yeah, dude, there's like so many
- 26:47good bands. There's embittered who's just
- 26:49about to drop a fucking killer record.
- 26:50I actually guessed on, dude, so many cool bands here right now.
- 26:53I just think that there's not like a focus of really like, you
- 26:56know, there's not like, oh, right now Chicago's like doom
- 26:59scene or like, you know, Seattle's grunge scene.
- 27:02It's not like that. I just think it's kind of all
- 27:03over the extreme metal map. So it's kind of hard to like
- 27:06really say like, you know, all those vans are killer.
- 27:09There's like something for everybody here, which I'm hoping
- 27:11that like, I think the scene right now has been very like
- 27:14splintered, you know what I mean?
- 27:15Like there's like hardcore kids are going to hardcore shows,
- 27:19metal kids are going to metal shows, and there's the two now
- 27:22shall not cross, it almost seems like.
- 27:24Back to that again. Yeah, I know.
- 27:27I got my childhood back. Like your childhood?
- 27:30Mine as well, you know, like that was going to go and see COC
- 27:34and then go see vision of Disorder, you know what I mean?
- 27:36And everyone was like, can't do that.
- 27:39Well, I bought both tickets so I guess I can, yes.
- 27:42You can you can do whatever you want.
- 27:43Life is yeah. Here's your own adventure, my
- 27:45friend. Yeah really quick.
- 27:48Yeah, really quick. And and you don't, you know, go
- 27:50as deep or not deep as you want to about this.
- 27:53But you mentioned Atlas Marthazana hiatus.
- 27:55Been 7-8 years since the last record, which I loved.
- 27:58I even bought the the big more detective kit, which was like
- 28:01what made me giggle endlessly. I love it so much, everything
- 28:05about it and that record. But like, you know, you feel
- 28:07like you might, you know, obviously motherless about to
- 28:09have a record out big push. You're going to tour hopefully
- 28:13as guys can, but like, you know, is there a future for the Atlas
- 28:16month? Will it come back someday?
- 28:18What do you think? Atlas was just toured last
- 28:20month, right? Yeah, we're back.
- 28:22We're we're back. We had personnel change.
- 28:25Dave Kush has disappeared on us. That's really much.
- 28:28That's like inside baseball. I'm not really holding back
- 28:31anywhere. Dave Kush disappeared.
- 28:33I don't know what happened. He stopped answering our texting
- 28:35calls a couple years ago. I hope he's doing OK.
- 28:39I say it every time I can, and I'll say it until it happens.
- 28:43If Dave hears this, please reach out.
- 28:45I'd love to know you're OK. That being said, Marcus, who
- 28:50used to play in a little band called Stabbing Westward, he is
- 28:55Andrew from the Atlas Spa's brother-in-law, and he has
- 28:57toured with us before he stepped into the role man, and we do.
- 29:01We had a great tour with them. He it's like family all over
- 29:04again. We're kind of like kind of just
- 29:06like trying to figure out exactly what the Atlas Spa
- 29:08sounds like in 2025, right? We have some covers on the
- 29:11horizon that we started a couple years ago that I think we're
- 29:14going to revisit completely. And then, yeah, we're going to
- 29:17hopefully put out a record or at least record it in 2027.
- 29:20That's the plan, sorry. I missed that tour, but if you
- 29:23come back again, you know I'm there.
- 29:25Any city I'm in, I'll be there in the front row as usual.
- 29:29It was a good time man. We went and played prepare the
- 29:31ground in Toronto that was. Awesome.
- 29:33That's what that was right. That's now I remember that's
- 29:37supposed to be cool. They're calling it the North
- 29:39American Rd. burn, which I love to make that a thing it.
- 29:42Was I played both now? I know it.
- 29:44Was very much on that point, man.
- 29:46And like I said, we're a fully functional man.
- 29:48It's just that I think Atlas Monk is not.
- 29:51Atlas Monk made a lot of like pretty rash decisions as far as
- 29:54touring because we just wanted to do it all And I think we're
- 29:57just old and we just don't want to do that, you know, and now we
- 30:00I have motherless and I'm going to do some of that too, you
- 30:03know, so like we're we're just trying to make calculated
- 30:07decisions when it comes to touring and make it next year.
- 30:10We're going to do some 8 for the distance shows.
- 30:11It turns 15, so we're going to. Play.
- 30:13I was going to ask that. That's great.
- 30:14Thank you for helping me with my cycling.
- 30:16Yeah, there you go. Yeah, that's going to be you.
- 30:17Have records that are turning 15 and 20 soon, which is why like
- 30:21your demo and EP and things like that and the the weed album.
- 30:25Like this is never the weed EP. I guess glorified will turn 20
- 30:31in like a couple years now. Shit, that's wild.
- 30:33But yeah, Ache deserves some more.
- 30:36Love is always going to be a forever favor of mine, and I
- 30:39thank you for making that one. Yeah, I'd like that school to
- 30:41kind of revisit their 2011 list. I know that we got screwed on
- 30:44that one, but yeah, like we're gonna go and do, we're gonna do
- 30:49some festivals next year for sure and try to hit some spots
- 30:52playing that fucking record cuz I think it deserves a little
- 30:54love. We're gonna do a repress of it.
- 30:55I know a lot of people missed out on that vinyl all the time.
- 30:57So I did. I want one, Yeah.
- 31:02Did you check out the new Deftones yet?
- 31:03I know what a big Deftones got. You have been.
- 31:05I did. I did.
- 31:06I kind of anticipated this question.
- 31:08You know it was coming with thoughts on the record.
- 31:10So it started at a 6 1/2 for me. I wasn't really feeling it.
- 31:14I kind of felt like it. It sounded almost like a little
- 31:18uninspired. I actually kind of felt that way
- 31:20from the get. So I didn't like Gore at all.
- 31:23I remember that I hated. Gore man I thought that album
- 31:26sucked and I also remember them talking about how there was a a
- 31:31track one deleted off that record last minute.
- 31:33I don't know if you remember that.
- 31:35I feel like I'm the only one that remembers that but like.
- 31:38That's a thing. Make us a song away, yeah.
- 31:41Right, so they took a song away the last minute and that band to
- 31:44me is like the ultimate track one band, right.
- 31:46So I kind of felt like that maybe like threw off Gore for
- 31:49me. And then Ohms came out and like
- 31:51it wasn't it was good, but was it good enough for me to like
- 31:54forget how bad Gore was? No, and it was like kind of
- 31:58holy, like forgettable, you know what I mean?
- 32:03Like I remember Ohms the song. That's the only song can
- 32:06honestly say like that song. I remember everything else kind
- 32:10of whatever. So like this one I put on at
- 32:13first I didn't like how all the songs were not were all in
- 32:15lowercase. I was like this and all the
- 32:17songs felt like the the titles were all like working titles.
- 32:21I don't know, I'm so close with this band.
- 32:23I feel like I'm in the damn band sometimes, you know, I mean
- 32:25like, but I've listened to it like 6 Times Now and now it's
- 32:29really grown on me. I think it's really good.
- 32:30I do think there's a couple of stinkers on there, you know?
- 32:33But then again, you know, it's like a tenth album you.
- 32:36Know not many bands get to do 10 albums in 30 years and 36 years
- 32:41as a band since they were teenagers.
- 32:42So it's wild that they have been very consistent.
- 32:45This is the biggest gap between records.
- 32:47I think the pandemic, I think, you know, Steph and his issue.
- 32:52I think the thing with Sergio, we had the first interview with
- 32:54Sergio when he left the band. Although I feel like they were
- 32:58trying to channel Chi on some of the base work, like the old
- 33:02baselines that she used to do, like the rolling counterpoint
- 33:06baselines. Yeah.
- 33:07I thought there was a little bit of a callback to cheat.
- 33:08I didn't feel like that. You know, The thing is like I
- 33:11felt like the nighttime sexy vibe wasn't hit.
- 33:15I felt they almost replaced that almost with like, hey, here's
- 33:18like the radio single version of that.
- 33:21You know what I mean? Like I feel like Koino Yokan had
- 33:24like this weird almost like shoegaze post metal kind of
- 33:28undertone to it. And now they kind of like missed
- 33:30like the underground version of that and went to like the radio
- 33:33version of it, if that makes sense, which is like.
- 33:34Totally. That's fair.
- 33:36I I like the I thought the record was both a grower and a
- 33:39shower at the same time. And I'll say why I think like on
- 33:43the first list. And some of the stuff hit me
- 33:44immediately that I really dug. And I think Chino for the first
- 33:48time is trying to do some different new and also callback
- 33:52things in his vocal stuff. I think that last track is
- 33:55beautiful with his deep, deep range that you never hear him
- 33:58do. And he wrapped a little super
- 34:00cool and I think there was some fun things about it.
- 34:03And then there then I thought some of the tracks got better
- 34:06with repeat listen. So I'm still like, I loved it.
- 34:09But you know, like it's interesting.
- 34:11It's the most read review we've had all year.
- 34:13So people were obviously thirsty and he talked to he's been
- 34:16talking about like, and again, you we would all love this to be
- 34:18the case. He's like, how is my band bigger
- 34:21than ever after 30 years? We were little kids when we
- 34:23started this me, me and Steph and she So like, you know,
- 34:27Congrats to them and I knew you would have thoughts and you
- 34:30never hold back. So I always appreciate that
- 34:32really. Hate them, they're like my
- 34:33favorite band ever. Like in like I saw them with 25
- 34:38people on adrenaline. You know what I mean?
- 34:41I've seen them like I think, I think I lost count in the 40s
- 34:44about the times like I've seen them over 40 times.
- 34:46I'm never going to need to see him again.
- 34:48I don't think I don't want to see him at a basketball stadium.
- 34:51I. Did and I loved it, but that's
- 34:53me. I'm a freak and I was my brain
- 34:55the whole time was like, oh, remember when they couldn't
- 34:58bring 100 people in New York and now they're playing to 20,000 in
- 35:01San Francisco, almost a hometown show and they did the arena in
- 35:05SAC the the night before. So like they did two shows in a
- 35:09row in in the Bay Area and drew a bunch 40,000 people by
- 35:13themselves. Go, let's go, go for it guys
- 35:16Like probs get your bag. Like the musician.
- 35:20I'm like go for it, more power to you.
- 35:23But I have the best memories ever of you.
- 35:24I'm good, you know what I mean? I get that I'll.
- 35:28Probably see him again eventually but I have no
- 35:29interest in being around 20,000 people.
- 35:32No, like fucking whatever. Change.
- 35:36They only know the TikTok songs. Yeah, the TikTok song.
- 35:39You know you need 3 songs. I'll be that guy.
- 35:41Fuck you, you know what I mean? I like this family, know him
- 35:43like them, so fuck all of you. Yeah, but I think Deftones, the
- 35:46real fans are diehards and they love everything.
- 35:49And they even they love the record the band hates.
- 35:51Like they love that they, you know, they're like, go make
- 35:53another record with Bob Ezrin. Maybe it'll be better the next
- 35:56time. No one.
- 35:57I'm trying to hear those demos. I want to hear a fucking arrows.
- 36:00I want to hear Arrows so much and they have played a couple
- 36:03things I think we're never going to hear.
- 36:05Then we're never going to get it until the band is done.
- 36:07Yeah, I think when the band's done, we'll probably get it.
- 36:10I remember hanging out with Abe in Sacramento and him be I'm
- 36:13asking him about it and he held up his phone.
- 36:15He goes, I've got the album right here.
- 36:17And I was like about to be like, you know, I.
- 36:23Stole Abe's phone. Yeah, like what's what's his
- 36:25birthday? You know, like a.
- 36:26Password is knife knife party. I'm kidding.
- 36:32That's awesome man, thank you for sharing all that.
- 36:33I knew I could nerd out with you on either this or Floyd.
- 36:36So there's not much Pink Floyd to talk about except the guys
- 36:38hating each other and how good Pompeii was.
- 36:41Real quick last question. I always have a wild card but
- 36:43now I gotta ask cuz we talked. You mentioned Batman earlier and
- 36:47I see all the toys. What's your favorite toy you got
- 36:49on the wall behind you there? Dude, this is like a very small
- 36:53part of the collection. I actually wound up like towards
- 36:56the end of last year. I wound up kind of like getting
- 37:00over living in the city proper and my sister needed knee
- 37:06surgery. So when I'm moving in, my sister
- 37:08to help her out. So like I'm actually staying at
- 37:10her house currently and my collection is very much dwindled
- 37:14down to things I've just kind of picked up in the last year.
- 37:17So like what what I have behind me is pretty minimal right
- 37:21there. But that's the 8/19/89 Joker
- 37:25from the movie Batman or whatever holds a pretty dear
- 37:29spot in my heart. Right above that is a Japanese
- 37:31great Mooda action, which is probably one of my favorites.
- 37:34There's the very first Stone Cold Steve Austin action figure
- 37:37and a couple of Roddy Piper action figures.
- 37:39I collect all Roddy Piper stuff. I'm a big fan of his Terra Fire
- 37:42Got Wolverine. You know, it's kind of all over
- 37:44the place. I have like a lot of wrestling,
- 37:47which is kind of the one thing I collect the most of.
- 37:50But then there's like a lot of like, you know, random vintage
- 37:52superhero stuff. I like the 80s stuff a lot, you
- 37:55know, so. Let me let me not be remiss and
- 37:57forget to mention the Jake Disney Roberts promo sample.
- 38:01I don't know if you had to clear that or not.
- 38:04Well, I didn't. Yeah, they do.
- 38:06They do have a person. I know the person over at WWE
- 38:10that checks that stuff. She don't watch my channel, so
- 38:12don't worry about it. She supports Ghost Cult in other
- 38:14ways, not watching our Youtubes and so.
- 38:17I've been trying to get sued over music forever.
- 38:19Yeah, it's. True.
- 38:19It'd be helpful. It'd be helpful it.
- 38:21Does. Did you see, I'm sure you're not
- 38:23aware of, but Travis Scott, like, ripped off Pixel Grips,
- 38:27like absolutely brand new record from July.
- 38:30A week later, his record drops with the whole song that their
- 38:33song is the bed of his song. They didn't even try to mask it
- 38:37out. Like they didn't even try.
- 38:38And then they jumped in their comments and apologize.
- 38:41We will. Our lawyers going to get in
- 38:43touch to clear it. Yo, the record is out.
- 38:45You could have tagged us. You're Travis Scott.
- 38:48Like, what the fuck? Yeah.
- 38:49Terrible Pixel Grip. I love them.
- 38:52That, like, had all of his fans, like, just killed in front of
- 38:55him and just continued to his concert.
- 38:56Yeah. And then people were coming
- 38:59after us. We were one of the first
- 39:01websites to break the story because the publicist told me
- 39:03about it. I didn't know.
- 39:05I I didn't, I don't listen to Travis Scott.
- 39:07How would I know? And they were like, hey, can you
- 39:09help us with this? And I was like, yeah, hell yeah.
- 39:11I love Pixel Grip. We've interviewed them and met
- 39:13them and everything. And I've seen them here in San
- 39:15Francisco and everything and had a fundraiser.
- 39:18And they. They were like, yeah, like at
- 39:21least tag us, even if you're not going to pay us.
- 39:24Anything would help. We're we're a brand new band.
- 39:26If you want to take a sample from the 60s or the 70s or the
- 39:2980s and it's a song no one remembers or no one's alive to
- 39:32to pay, that's one thing. We're a a happening band now,
- 39:36making music now. We just pulled a record out.
- 39:38They are pretty DIY. They don't have a label.
- 39:41It's like, how are you going to rob us?
- 39:43Like of all the fucking things and then some.
- 39:45His fans were defending him and the producer, well, the artist
- 39:49doesn't know where the track came from.
- 39:50I'm like, what are you fucking high?
- 39:52Probably. But like, get out of here man.
- 39:54That's fucking some bullshit. Don't pass the buck and
- 39:56apologize because you love the artist.
- 39:59That's some bullshit. So I hope they get paid.
- 40:00That'd be awesome. I would love to see fucking
- 40:03Travis Scott. Well, I was, Yeah.
- 40:06Well, hopefully I don't want you to get sued.
- 40:07But like, if they found out and they brought some attention
- 40:10because Jake the snake fucking rules and that promo is the best
- 40:13promo of all time. I think.
- 40:15He wasn't, yeah, he wasn't the heel at the time, I think is the
- 40:19prevailing thought. But that thing that it fucking
- 40:22slams. I'm so I was like my ears perked
- 40:25up. That's when I was really into
- 40:27wrestling. I haven't really been in a long
- 40:29time. I know my friends are still like
- 40:30wrestling and I know what a fan you have been from growing up
- 40:34so. This is like a basic getaway
- 40:35with game that shit with. I always thought I was like,
- 40:37this is the one band where I can drop that and and Anthony's a
- 40:41big wrestling guy too. So I was like, let's go for it.
- 40:43And also Gary hates wrestling so it's easy.
- 40:46Because Gary's a prog guy and of course he hates wrestling.
- 40:49The wrestling guys beat him up probably his whole life, just
- 40:51like me for. Gary, there's also on Christian
- 40:59Math, there's a sample from Event Horizon.
- 41:02Oh, word yeah, right break. It says this Yes, sample for 20
- 41:10years I've like had that shit queued up being like someone
- 41:14every time anybody's ever been like, we put a sample in there
- 41:16like, oh, I got 1, you know, like fucking I finally worked it
- 41:19in. You know, there's like all these
- 41:20like little things I had on my list.
- 41:22Like I'm like, I'm going to check off every one of these
- 41:24motherfuckers with this, with this record.
- 41:25And I think I almost did so. Fuck yeah, I am not supposed to
- 41:29by nature have favorites, but dude you're one of my favorite
- 41:32people. Thank you so much for being
- 41:33generous always with your support and your time.
- 41:36I'm really proud of you. Please keep your head up.
- 41:39Thank you for making this record with your boys Motherless and
- 41:43we'll be looking forward to this drop in and hopefully future
- 41:47towards and festivals and and more from the Atlas month as you
- 41:50figure it out. Thanks so much brother.
- 41:52We'll be out there man. Thank you again for everything
- 41:53dude, appreciate.
