Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Are you looking for a pole
- 0:28vaulter? Someone who can score in your
- 0:30conference meet? Here's the truth.
- 0:33Pole vault is the most technical event in track and field.
- 0:35It requires the most coaching. But that also means it's often
- 0:39overlooked. And that's where the opportunity
- 0:43is. I'm Dave Amiot, head track and
- 0:46field coach, head boys track and field coach at East Kentwood
- 0:48High School near Grand Rapids, MI Track is my obsession, but
- 0:52pole vault, That's my hobby. I coach for free.
- 0:55Don't tell my bosses that and I pretty much have.
- 0:58Most of my career. I coach both boys and girls and
- 1:02take the most pride in starting from scratch.
- 1:04At Ek we've we've had girls, we've had 7 girls over 12 feet
- 1:09and seven boys over 15 feet in the past 28 years.
- 1:14We've had a lot of success in the Club World as well with kids
- 1:18that have been pole vaulters and we've shown them things.
- 1:20But we do take the most pride in just those E Kentwood kids
- 1:23who've never jumped before. When I'm searching for a
- 1:27potential pole vaulter, I start with a few basics.
- 1:31Speed. The faster pole vaulter usually
- 1:34wins. I look for those kids who just
- 1:37are on the outside of the Sprint relays usually.
- 1:39So if they didn't make the four by one, I'm usually trying to
- 1:42grab them over into the pole vault.
- 1:45Strength, You know, pull ups and push ups are a great indicator
- 1:48to figure out who's who's strong for their body size.
- 1:52Height is always a good skill to have.
- 1:54I haven't always had the tallest pole vaulters, but certainly I
- 1:58will take tall kids, you know, in certainly in, you know,
- 2:03anytime high jump pole vault, you're looking for kids that are
- 2:05just a little bit closer to the bar.
- 2:07But most importantly, mindset. I want kids with a growth
- 2:11mindset, kids who won't get discouraged.
- 2:15Pole vault will break your heart on a regular basis.
- 2:18Pole vault is is always difficult and there's always
- 2:22something to change and there's always something to get better
- 2:24at, so a growth mindset is essential.
- 2:28One of my best pickups I ever had in recruiting a pole vaulter
- 2:33was Gabby Lyon. Gabby Lyon is the NCAA champion
- 2:37and now a professional pole vaulter.
- 2:39She went to Louisville, but when she was in 10th grade she was in
- 2:43my Algebra 2 class. She had never heard of the sport
- 2:45of pole vault before. She was a smoky kid in my class
- 2:49who probably talked too much and got in a lot of trouble for, for
- 2:55not paying attention. But I was able to build a great
- 2:58relationship with her. I invited her out to, to try
- 3:02pole vaulting and I didn't know when I looked at her, she's 5
- 3:06foot nothing and, and maybe weighed, you know, 98 lbs or
- 3:10something at the time, probably less and didn't look very
- 3:13strong, didn't look very fast. But I knew she had a great
- 3:16attitude and, and it was a kind of kid that I want to hang out
- 3:18with. So I invited her to pole vault
- 3:21practice. And what I found out that day
- 3:22was she's really fast and she's really strong for her size.
- 3:28About two weeks later, we went to our first meet at Michigan
- 3:31State University. It was an indoor meet and she
- 3:34had made a couple bars, which was cool.
- 3:36And then she she went up to jump and she started bending the pole
- 3:41for the first time and she let go when it vent and it flew
- 3:44across the track. And I was really nervous, you
- 3:47know, that feeling as a coach that oh boy, you know, she's
- 3:49only been doing this for a couple weeks and I might lose
- 3:52her. And she popped up and she ran
- 3:54across the track and grabbed the pole and, and came back and
- 3:57said, boy, that was weird. And what, what can I do
- 4:00differently? And you know, all, all coaches
- 4:03know the answer, what you could do differently.
- 4:05Just hang on to the poll. But that moment told me
- 4:08everything. She wasn't rattled.
- 4:10She was ready to learn. And so, so, you know, just
- 4:14finding some kid out of my math classroom was, was an exciting
- 4:18time. Each year I at the beginning of
- 4:22the season, the first week of the year, I try to bring around
- 4:2430 to 35 pole vaulters to our team.
- 4:27We're a pretty big team combined between boys and girls.
- 4:30We have over 300 athletes each year.
- 4:34So bringing 10% over the team to try it isn't, isn't that
- 4:37outrageous. We really try to get about 10
- 4:40kids to stick each year out of our group.
- 4:44That gives us a vault crew around 25 or so by the time we
- 4:48have some, some kids that by the time we're senior year decide
- 4:52to, to not do it anymore. So, so we line them up, we walk
- 4:56them through a few basic drills and, and we get them.
- 5:00We, we line up all these new pole vaulters that we have.
- 5:03OK, hold as high as you can with your left hand, put it on your
- 5:06right shoulder, grab the pole with your right hand, put it
- 5:11over your head. Make sure your right arm's tall.
- 5:13We go through some basic drills, 5 to 10 minutes of basic drills.
- 5:17Then we throw them in line with the rest of the pole vaulters.
- 5:19And so they sit in the back of the line and they kind of get to
- 5:22watch the kids in front of them. Often times they're way better
- 5:25than them, but they're they're going to be in their first time.
- 5:28So as soon as they get to the front of the line, I put the
- 5:31boys at 32 feet, I put the girls at 30 feet.
- 5:34We're looking for a three left approach on that very first day.
- 5:37Sometimes it's 4 lefts or five lefts, but, but we, we, we get
- 5:42them there, we show them, remind them how to hold it.
- 5:45We put their hands on it. And then that's where the fun
- 5:47begins. We, we yell out to the entire
- 5:50field house and we might have, you know, 150 kids, you know,
- 5:53doing various things in the field house.
- 5:55Hey, everybody, I got John Smith here and John Smith, this is
- 5:59going to be his first time ever pole vaulting.
- 6:01Let's put our hands together. And so John's there at 32 feet
- 6:04and I'm whispering in his ear. OK, buddy, he got ready to go.
- 6:07He got your hands here and they're all clapping.
- 6:09The whole, the whole crew is clapping.
- 6:11I got everybody with a, a rhythmic clap going, getting
- 6:14ready for John Smith. And John's nervous and his hands
- 6:17are sweaty, and then he takes off and he goes and he jumps and
- 6:21he and he lands in the pit. Sometimes he's on the wrong side
- 6:24of the pole. Sometimes he let go of the pole
- 6:26altogether. And we have everybody clap.
- 6:28Yeah, way to go, John. And then we do it again for
- 6:32every one of my beginners. And essentially the, the, the
- 6:35point is, we want to get to that place, that stage where we're at
- 6:39someday in the pole vault, where everybody's clapping for us.
- 6:42Maybe it's the state finals, maybe it's wherever, but that
- 6:45rhythmic clap is coming. Maybe it's the Olympics and that
- 6:48rhythmic clap is coming and, and they get to start their career
- 6:51that way and they have a lot of fun.
- 6:53And on that day, those days are always really exciting.
- 6:57At Ek, we're building more than just a vault squad.
- 7:01We're building a vault culture like it's a, it's a, it's a real
- 7:04team. So we want to make them feel
- 7:06like they're part of something. We call it the best fraternity
- 7:09in sports. We carry usually around 2025
- 7:14kids by the by the end of the season and some kids walk away
- 7:21and that's OK. But, but if they stay, we coach
- 7:24them up. You know, with the, with the
- 7:26beginners, we jump a lot from three steps.
- 7:30We get a lot of reps in and we and we try to get them over that
- 7:33initial fear. And if and if you're not fearful
- 7:36a little bit when you first start pole vaulting, you're
- 7:38probably some sort of a sociopath.
- 7:40You be probably should be checked out.
- 7:42It, it is, it will make you nervous.
- 7:44And so we're trying to get that initial just fear to go away a
- 7:48little bit so we can do some teaching.
- 7:49So a lot of three-step approaches on our beginners.
- 7:53Not everyone needs to start the pole vault.
- 7:57This is always a thing. Not everyone needs to start in
- 8:00middle school. These days, the pole vault seems
- 8:02like earlier and earlier people are pole vaulting.
- 8:04It's, you know, I'm not afraid to take a sophomore or a junior
- 8:08even sometimes we've taken seniors on.
- 8:11Not all kids are ready for it. When they're younger, they're
- 8:13not strong enough. They're not developed enough.
- 8:15And so sometimes it's, it's good to wait, you know, and, and The
- 8:21thing is, if they're fast and strong and tough enough, they'll
- 8:24catch up. I, I believe I can really get
- 8:27most girls over 9 feet and most boys over 12 feet if they just
- 8:31stick with it from their freshman year to their senior
- 8:34year. I have, I really feel
- 8:35comfortable in, in saying that. And, and those, those will score
- 8:38in most conference meets. It takes time, it takes
- 8:42patience, but if they buy in, the rewards are huge.
- 8:47My final advice for coaches, if you want to build a vault crew
- 8:50at your school, first start short and safe. 3 left
- 8:55approaches. Make sure they're comfortable
- 8:58landing into the pit a lot before you move their grip up
- 9:01the pole or before you move back steps.
- 9:03Make sure that you're you're doing things in a safe, safe
- 9:06manner. Make it fun, keep the mood
- 9:09light, celebrate the effort. You know, keep that growth
- 9:12mindset going in those kids. Every single vault that's ever
- 9:17come down the runway has something wrong with it.
- 9:19Yes, even Mono Duplantis is working on something every time
- 9:22he comes down the runway. It's OK to to give them one good
- 9:27teaching cue each time and and focus on on keeping it fun.
- 9:32Use the downtime. Teach athletes how to be
- 9:35students of the sport. Listen to podcasts, watch
- 9:38videos, go to clinics. Don't just pole vault.
- 9:42Become a pole vaulter. Pobo is a cruel lover.
- 9:48Every meet ends on a mess and every vault can be better.
- 9:54It's it will tear your heart out.
- 9:56But the real win is building something bigger than the bars
- 10:00being cleared. It's watching shy kids grow into
- 10:03fearless athletes. It's the culture around the pit
- 10:07of, of camaraderie and and friendship and those those last
- 10:11forever. It's the bonds between team
- 10:14mates. It's it's hearing the crowd clap
- 10:17for someone trying it for the very first time.
- 10:20So I'll ask you, are you looking for a pole vaulter or Are you
- 10:23ready to build a vault culture? Because if you are, you're not
- 10:27just coaching an event, you're changing lives.
- 10:34If you enjoyed this podcast, I've been writing a book called
- 10:38Beyond the Finish Line, The Art of Transformational Coaching.

- 10:48to share more. Thanks for listening and go out
