- 0:00Speaker 1: Piece of the planet, Charlamagne to God here and as
- 0:02Speaker 1: we come close to closing out this year, I just
- 0:04Speaker 1: want to say thank you for tuning it into the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Black Effect podcast Network. There have been so many great
- 0:08Speaker 1: moments over the past year. Take a listen to some
- 0:10Speaker 1: of those captivating moments in this special best of episode.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Hey, guys, Eating while Broke. I'm your host Coley Witt,
- 0:21Speaker 2: So I'm really excited to have you. I feel like
- 0:24Speaker 2: I did the grocery shopping guys. So I know what
- 0:26Speaker 2: he's making us is extremely healthy and budget friendly. Yes,
- 0:31Speaker 2: so go ahead. What are you going to have me
- 0:32Speaker 2: eating today?
- 0:34Speaker 3: So today we have overnight oats, very very basic. But
- 0:39Speaker 3: the good part about it is you can get as
- 0:42Speaker 3: specific and as curated as you want, depending on your
- 0:45Speaker 3: budget and how many you're trying to make.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Oh I thought this was like a yogurt parfe or something.
- 0:51Speaker 4: It is it is.
- 0:52Speaker 3: So the way it is is it has a liquid base,
- 0:56Speaker 3: which is going to be like the oat milk and
- 0:57Speaker 3: everything that's in it, and then it has the oatmeals
- 0:59Speaker 3: that absorb, and then you top it with whatever types
- 1:02Speaker 3: of like fruit and everything that you want on top
- 1:03Speaker 3: of it. So you could get as intricate as you want.
- 1:06Speaker 3: You could get as basic as you want.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm nervous about this dish, but is this now? Is
- 1:11Speaker 2: this considered vegan? No, huh, because the creek yogurt.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It could be depending on your ingredients. But I was
- 1:17Speaker 3: using what I had in my kitchen.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I was actually shopping with my dad, and I was like,
- 1:20Speaker 2: I called bullshit.
- 1:22Speaker 5: I called bullshit.
- 1:24Speaker 2: He was eating this out of Mason jars, Like come on.
- 1:27Speaker 2: But then I was driving and I was like, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: technically it could be considered broke because your oats, your honey,
- 1:34Speaker 2: your chi seeds, they're the staple, right, And I'm guessing
- 1:38Speaker 2: oat milk doesn't go bad because it wasn't in refrigerated section,
- 1:41Speaker 2: So the only moving parts of this dish that you
- 1:44Speaker 2: would have to rotate out would be the fruit and
- 1:48Speaker 2: the yogurt. So technically, i'm guessing based on this this
- 1:53Speaker 2: this dish costs me about forty five dollars, guys, and
- 1:57Speaker 2: that included the Mason jars. So typically I'm guessing this
- 2:01Speaker 2: could be your breakfast for at least a week, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: it would probably run you about twelve dollars if you
- 2:08Speaker 2: already have the staple ingredients.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and for a lot of it. You have a
- 2:13Speaker 3: lot of stuff at home. A majority of people have
- 2:15Speaker 3: well my assagnsion, they have honey, they have oats, they've
- 2:19Speaker 3: got some type of like milk or anything like that. Yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 3: any milk can work. I just like oat milk because
- 2:25Speaker 3: it's a little easier on my stomach. But I've used
- 2:28Speaker 3: almond milk, I've used two percent anything that's good. And then,
- 2:31Speaker 3: just like I was saying before, as you want to
- 2:33Speaker 3: curate and make it more special, you can make it
- 2:35Speaker 3: high protein by putting protein.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Powder in it.
- 2:38Speaker 3: You can add a lot of stuff. And then Mason jars.
- 2:40Speaker 3: You could just get them from like the dollar store.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The fruits are nice.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you can get everything pretty much affordable. All right,
- 2:48Speaker 2: But when you make these at home, do you make
- 2:51Speaker 2: them like on the spot, like when you're making cereal,
- 2:54Speaker 2: or do you like have these in your fridge? Why
- 2:56Speaker 2: the mason jar?
- 2:57Speaker 3: So, the mason jar is good because it kind of
- 2:58Speaker 3: ferments it, right. I usually make them the night before,
- 3:02Speaker 3: so planning a lot of them, I'll do my meal
- 3:04Speaker 3: prep for the week. So I'll make probably about five
- 3:07Speaker 3: or six of these and one in one go so
- 3:10Speaker 3: it's really really easy to make, but that's not the
- 3:12Speaker 3: night before. If it's like, you can still make it
- 3:14Speaker 3: like really quickly. It's just the flavor absorbs into the
- 3:17Speaker 3: oat meal the longer you wait, so it could be
- 3:20Speaker 3: really dense and kind of just not as hard to
- 3:24Speaker 3: eat if you're just like really in a quick like punch.
- 3:27Speaker 3: But you can also make it and plant it out,
- 3:29Speaker 3: so the meal that you make that night before three
- 3:32Speaker 3: days later would be even better and even sweeter from
- 3:34Speaker 3: like the fruits and like the honeys and stuff that
- 3:36Speaker 3: absorb into it the longer you wait.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm just genuinely curious if you make it, say I'm
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm like, I love this dish. It's fantastic. I'm going
- 3:44Speaker 2: to make these at home. And I like to meal
- 3:46Speaker 2: prep on Sundays. I'm a huge meal prepper. Okay, yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 2: but my whole thing is consistency. Like if I make
- 3:54Speaker 2: this on a Sunday and I go and eat it
- 3:56Speaker 2: on a Wednesday, is everything going to be like mushy
- 3:59Speaker 2: and slow?
- 4:00Speaker 3: I mean, it depends if you go and put fruit
- 4:03Speaker 3: in it and stuff, like the fruit eventually can start
- 4:05Speaker 3: to get like mushy and things. I'm the type of
- 4:08Speaker 3: person that I can make something on Sunday and eat
- 4:09Speaker 3: the same dish over and over and over and over. Yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 3: if you want to make sure it's not like a
- 4:16Speaker 3: crazy consistency, you can always put like the fruit in
- 4:19Speaker 3: at the end. So when you're about to eat it,
- 4:21Speaker 3: maybe just like Gardner shit and put it on.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You're gonna say the milk was gonna make it nest.
- 4:25Speaker 2: All right, let's make it all excited.
- 4:29Speaker 6: What are you gonna have us eating today?
- 4:31Speaker 5: Well, what we're gonna eat is a breakdown. Some call
- 4:35Speaker 5: it a breakdown, some call it a spread. So you
- 4:38Speaker 5: got your ramen noodles with a little chicken breast, a
- 4:42Speaker 5: little pinch of jalapenos, Sprinkle it with a little bit
- 4:46Speaker 5: of doritos to add a little crunch to it. You know,
- 4:52Speaker 5: I'm a grill. I'm a grill those I'm gonna put
- 4:55Speaker 5: some cheese on top, add a little flavor to it,
- 4:58Speaker 5: and we're gonna have us an old school breakdown with
- 5:01Speaker 5: not all they agreed. It's just like one of the
- 5:03Speaker 5: brokenst days.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Now, this is is this well before Boone thugs and
- 5:07Speaker 2: harmony or is this during after fiel me In this.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Junior high, but elementary junior high, high school, twenties, thirties, forties,
- 5:21Speaker 5: eating this all ot.
- 5:22Speaker 7: And especially jail especially jail house too, because that's all
- 5:25Speaker 7: you got, that's all Youah.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's hilarious. Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Now, when you're cooking this dish, I'm really curious to
- 5:35Speaker 2: when you're cooking this dish on this show, if you
- 5:38Speaker 2: are thinking about your milestones that you have reached from
- 5:42Speaker 2: cooking this dish, because you guys have a lot of
- 5:45Speaker 2: stuff you've done. You have a Biggie Easy Tupac collaborations
- 5:51Speaker 2: Mariah Carey. Right, you know, we got to touch on
- 5:55Speaker 2: all these topics, but I want to know all the
- 5:56Speaker 2: behind the scenes. I don't want to hear anything you
- 5:58Speaker 2: guys said during any other interviews. I want to I
- 6:01Speaker 2: want to be in the kitchen with you guys. And
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm hoping you guys can spell the tea lazy. You
- 6:06Speaker 2: get on the cook you start cooking and take me
- 6:12Speaker 2: take me back to the probably the og original time
- 6:16Speaker 2: you started making this dish.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Well, I started making this dishes earlier as I can cook.
- 6:23Speaker 5: You know, we started cooking noodles very very early, you know, so, uh,
- 6:28Speaker 5: it's from the beginning. Man, we want to elaborate.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I mean, you know we was, uh we had that's all.
- 6:34Speaker 7: That's all you had when you was coming up even
- 6:37Speaker 7: you know, five six years old, coming up out that
- 6:39Speaker 7: ruder man coming out that ruder and everything. You know,
- 6:42Speaker 7: we was, uh, from the router to the tutor, from
- 6:47Speaker 7: the very very very beginning times. You know, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 7: because sometimes even as little as a little g all
- 6:54Speaker 7: you had was something that sometimes you didn't have hot water.
- 6:58Speaker 7: Sometimes you gotta eat that muff fucker excuse my french y'all,
- 7:02Speaker 7: sometimes you gotta eat it. Just put the water in
- 7:04Speaker 7: there or whatnot and let it soften up and then
- 7:08Speaker 7: go with.
- 7:08Speaker 4: It like that.
- 7:09Speaker 7: Sometimes you didn't have a chip. Sometimes you definitely had
- 7:11Speaker 7: a breast and uh and the ingredients to go with it.
- 7:15Speaker 4: And uh so you.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Will have to put the top of the lid over
- 7:19Speaker 5: there and just let it just simmer down and warm
- 7:21Speaker 5: water because the noodles, you know, the longer they sit
- 7:23Speaker 5: in news the water noodles sit in water, they swell,
- 7:27Speaker 5: they get soft, so you know what I mean. So
- 7:29Speaker 5: sometimes we didn't have the heat because we ain't had
- 7:32Speaker 5: gas on at the crib.
- 7:34Speaker 2: So before all the lifetime achievements and all the accolades.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Can you guys take me back to a time when
- 7:40Speaker 2: you were making this dish and time wasn't it wasn't
- 7:44Speaker 2: looking good and maybe you guys were just at the
- 7:47Speaker 2: crosshoads of.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Despair.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Maybe can can any of you guys elaborate on.
- 7:53Speaker 7: About the Vasilia when the Visilia went like like we
- 7:57Speaker 7: had on one of our stops up we had a
- 8:00Speaker 7: stop on here coming out here. We had been out
- 8:02Speaker 7: here for like two maybe two and a half maybe
- 8:05Speaker 7: three months. We uh, we moved up to Voselia and
- 8:08Speaker 7: this is before the easy e. This is before him
- 8:12Speaker 7: taking a song and uh and uh, you know we
- 8:15Speaker 7: was we was rough necking it real tough, real real
- 8:18Speaker 7: tough up there. You know, we had came up on
- 8:20Speaker 7: the little apartment you know that we ended up ended
- 8:25Speaker 7: up actually spreading graffiti on the walls and ship o.
- 8:30Speaker 4: The apartment was really bad.
- 8:33Speaker 7: They was bad, you know what I'm saying. They sprayed
- 8:35Speaker 7: a b boy on the wall and you know, yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 7: not giving a damn about you know, getting kicked out
- 8:41Speaker 7: and nothing like that. But yeah, it was you know,
- 8:44Speaker 7: we was doing a couple of things to come up
- 8:47Speaker 7: come up on a meal and everything and not again.
- 8:50Speaker 5: You know, we go like rob a piece of man.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we'll hit up, but we'll hit up, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 7: eighteen nineteen.
- 9:00Speaker 4: So yeah, so it was it was easy.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So it was before easy.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it was before easy.
- 9:07Speaker 7: You know, we had to do the thing, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 7: the north Ridge earthquake had just remember that we got
- 9:13Speaker 7: we got caught up in that and then so but
- 9:17Speaker 7: we was we was we was on some real struggle
- 9:19Speaker 7: ship for real.
- 9:22Speaker 2: No, you guys could so were you guys all just
- 9:25Speaker 2: living in a one bedroom apartment trying to pursue music
- 9:28Speaker 2: or one.
- 9:29Speaker 7: Bedroom, two bedroom apartment that we shared. You know, it
- 9:32Speaker 7: was all of us, all of us together, and you know,
- 9:36Speaker 7: we had a couple of homies that knew somebody had
- 9:38Speaker 7: to have two friends that was out here going to
- 9:40Speaker 7: school playing ball.
- 9:41Speaker 4: They had was.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Holding down a little. I forgot what type of job
- 9:45Speaker 7: there was, but they knew. They knew folks that can
- 9:48Speaker 7: help us out and put us, put us in places
- 9:50Speaker 7: as we was trying to get get it, get to
- 9:53Speaker 7: get to our goals.
- 9:54Speaker 4: You know. So we're done, baby special.
- 10:06Speaker 2: That's a really good looking grilled cheese.
- 10:09Speaker 8: Look at that.
- 10:10Speaker 4: The cheese is bubbling, guys, it's bubbling over and it's
- 10:13Speaker 4: a little buttered in.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I just learned a trick and making grilled cheese. What
- 10:18Speaker 2: is it to stack a lot of cheese in the middle.
- 10:21Speaker 8: I mean, cheese is actually a pretty staple ingredient.
- 10:27Speaker 2: To the grilled cheese, I know, but I usually just
- 10:29Speaker 2: put like one or two. Yours is like, first of all,
- 10:31Speaker 2: you did it really.
- 10:32Speaker 8: Impress I tell you, I tell you, I tell you
- 10:33Speaker 8: why though that's why you're healthy, though you said you
- 10:35Speaker 8: were healthy before.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Look at the like the even colored color. I don't
- 10:40Speaker 2: know if it's you did a really impressive grilled cheese.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Okay, yah, just low and slow. Okay.
- 10:45Speaker 8: So look, so I'm there and they're like, okay, so
- 10:48Speaker 8: it's Saturday. So the five hundred bucks that you were
- 10:51Speaker 8: promised you get that it's Saturday, so you get double
- 10:54Speaker 8: the session fee on that plus like whatever you get
- 10:58Speaker 8: like a holding fee and all of that stuff. So
- 11:00Speaker 8: them making like three thousand dollars for this commercial, let
- 11:01Speaker 8: me tell you what kind of American I am.
- 11:04Speaker 6: I come home.
- 11:06Speaker 8: And I'm doing my unemployment and it asked if you
- 11:09Speaker 8: made any money? Yep, why I put the money on there.
- 11:14Speaker 6: Why, I don't know.
- 11:15Speaker 8: I've seen niggas get the death penalty for less. So
- 11:18Speaker 8: so I put so, I put the money on there.
- 11:21Speaker 8: I put the money on there, and this is what happens.
- 11:24Speaker 8: They then readjust my unemployment quarterly.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Like me, yeah, I would have told you not to
- 11:32Speaker 2: do that so quarterly.
- 11:34Speaker 8: So it goes from being I go from getting five
- 11:38Speaker 8: hundred dollars a week in unemployment to seventy five dollars
- 11:41Speaker 8: a week in unemployment. So I go, Okay, this is
- 11:43Speaker 8: the deal. It's not obviously, they don't think a nigga
- 11:45Speaker 8: can live off this. So I'm just gonna go up
- 11:47Speaker 8: to the unemployment office. I'm gonna talk to these people.
- 11:50Speaker 8: That's why I'm my deal. I'm gonna gout to the
- 11:51Speaker 8: uneployment office. I'm gonnak to these people. I'm gona straighten
- 11:53Speaker 8: this whole thing out. So I go up there to
- 11:55Speaker 8: the unemployment office in Pasadena. I'll never forget. The lady
- 11:58Speaker 8: was like, baby, ain't nothing we can do. It's in
- 12:01Speaker 8: the computer. I was like, uh, I can't live on
- 12:06Speaker 8: this blah blah blah in the computer. So I needed
- 12:09Speaker 8: a job. I had to have a job.
- 12:12Speaker 4: But you know what.
- 12:12Speaker 8: The funny the ge let that commercial ended up like
- 12:16Speaker 8: making me that commercial ran.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Oh shit, I.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Didn't know anything.
- 12:21Speaker 8: I didn't know anything about being a commercial actors. So
- 12:23Speaker 8: I would get a holding check every now and again,
- 12:26Speaker 8: and then I started making money off the commercial.
- 12:27Speaker 6: But that's later. I didn't notice.
- 12:29Speaker 8: I came home, and when I came home, I was like,
- 12:31Speaker 8: I have to find a job. I pulled up entertainment
- 12:34Speaker 8: careers dot net. The first job was TMS tour guide.
- 12:39Speaker 6: You were a tour guide, yep, it was being a
- 12:42Speaker 6: tour guid.
- 12:43Speaker 8: TMZ was starting a tour, and the tour was like
- 12:46Speaker 8: you go around to different places and you show people
- 12:50Speaker 8: different things that happened like on TMZ, like we would
- 12:55Speaker 8: show you where Josh Hartnett got diarrhea. We would show
- 12:58Speaker 8: you where my Richards fucked up at the laugh Factory.
- 13:01Speaker 8: It's actually a pretty good tour. Actually, I was one
- 13:04Speaker 8: of the first GUIDs on the tour. I was the
- 13:07Speaker 8: first guid on the tour. So actually a little bit
- 13:10Speaker 8: of pride in the fact that we were able to
- 13:12Speaker 8: jump that off and make it a thing, because it's
- 13:13Speaker 8: still going right now, right, So I get in there
- 13:17Speaker 8: and I do that. I apply.
- 13:20Speaker 2: That's a brilliant concept now that I think about it.
- 13:22Speaker 8: They revolutionize the whole tour game. So I apply, and
- 13:28Speaker 8: they're doing the tours like American Idol. They have all
- 13:31Speaker 8: of these tour guys in there, and then every week
- 13:33Speaker 8: they cut a guy. So I'm in there and like
- 13:36Speaker 8: they have me coming in there and whatever. I get
- 13:38Speaker 8: the whole thing. I start with the TMS tour. This
- 13:44Speaker 8: goes through to about everything I'm talking about. I start
- 13:49Speaker 8: with the TMS tour. I think April of twenty ten,
- 13:53Speaker 8: maybe it might be twenty eleven, whatever it is. I
- 13:55Speaker 8: start with the TMZ tour.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Then by.
- 14:00Speaker 8: You lie, I started in March.
- 14:02Speaker 4: By July, I'm on TV every day.
- 14:05Speaker 8: Within a couple of months, Harvey came.
- 14:07Speaker 4: In took the tour.
- 14:08Speaker 8: I was up there doing my thing, and I told
- 14:11Speaker 8: a joke and he liked the joke so much that he.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Brought me in and put me into the.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Newsroom.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Into the newsroom.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yep, okay, So then you get this newsroom opportunity, Your
- 14:23Speaker 2: pay goes up. Benefits.
- 14:24Speaker 3: What are we looking at?
- 14:25Speaker 8: So this is the way it was working. I was
- 14:28Speaker 8: making money because I was getting tips on the tour.
- 14:32Speaker 8: So I was probably making fifteen hundred dollars a week
- 14:34Speaker 8: straight cash off the tips on the tour. I was
- 14:37Speaker 8: killing these motherfucking white people. I was killing them.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I was.
- 14:45Speaker 8: I was fucking killing them. And then you would you
- 14:47Speaker 8: would come in and you would have like people from
- 14:50Speaker 8: there was tourists, like they were from Australia, they were
- 14:52Speaker 8: from Canada.
- 14:53Speaker 4: There was the thing that we do on the tour
- 14:55Speaker 4: to where.
- 14:58Speaker 8: If you see a celebrity on the tour, you stop
- 14:59Speaker 8: the bus, get off, you shoot the celebrity.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And when you're driving.
- 15:02Speaker 8: Around in LA at certain times, if you know where
- 15:04Speaker 8: to go, it's impossible not to see famous people. Like
- 15:07Speaker 8: if you were coming to LA and you and you
- 15:10Speaker 8: were hanging out with me, and I was like, hey,
- 15:12Speaker 8: you want to sit around and watch celebrities all day?
- 15:15Speaker 8: There are three or four places I could tell you
- 15:16Speaker 8: where it's going to happen, and so we would see him,
- 15:21Speaker 8: and I'm a good spotter.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I would spot celebrities and we would see him and
- 15:24Speaker 4: the people would go credit. We all kinds of people.
- 15:26Speaker 8: Fucking Lady God got Leonardo DiCaprio, David Beckham and just
- 15:29Speaker 8: the other niggas that be around.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Just niggas that be around larious.
- 15:33Speaker 8: You would just say, you know the people I'm talking
- 15:34Speaker 8: about in La, they just they'd be around. You see
- 15:37Speaker 8: them all the time, Like, hey, weren't you in Yeah,
- 15:39Speaker 8: like you see them. The funniest thing was b T
- 15:42Speaker 8: Wars weekend right because there would be all kinds of
- 15:44Speaker 8: celebrities that I would recognize that the bus wouldn't know
- 15:47Speaker 8: who they were, and so the bus wouldn't believe me
- 15:49Speaker 8: that these people were famous. I'm like, yo, I don't
- 15:51Speaker 8: know if you know this motherfucker two number ones.
- 15:53Speaker 4: We ain't never heard of him before.
- 15:55Speaker 8: I don't know he signed to Luducris and Them's that's like, actually,
- 16:00Speaker 8: I don't want to say the guy's name, but like
- 16:02Speaker 8: that's actually that guy is a huge singer, Like you
- 16:05Speaker 8: guys should probably care about him.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Wait, don't know, fuck them?
- 16:07Speaker 6: Keep going, Oh no, what's going on? How do you feel?
- 16:13Speaker 2: Charlemagne the God also known as hip hop's Howard Stern
- 16:16Speaker 2: really best selling author of books Black Privilege, Shook One,
- 16:19Speaker 2: and most recently, Get Honest or Die Lion, Why Small
- 16:23Speaker 2: Talk Sucks. In addition to all these accolades, you have
- 16:26Speaker 2: invested close to thirty years in the radio broadcasting industry.
- 16:30Speaker 2: You're the founder of the Black Effect podcast network.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Where you can listen to eating while broke, where you.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Can which you yourself is literally the only reason why we're
- 16:37Speaker 2: able to do this interview. In addition to all that,
- 16:40Speaker 2: you are the creator of Black Privilege Publishing. I read
- 16:43Speaker 2: this quote. I was hanging out in my dad's apartment.
- 16:45Speaker 2: He had this quote on the wall and I took it.
- 16:47Speaker 2: And the whole irony in this quote is that he
- 16:50Speaker 2: actually took it from me. But I read this quote
- 16:52Speaker 2: and I thought of you. Excellence is never an accident.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It is always a result of high intention, sincere effort
- 16:59Speaker 2: and tell direction, skillful execution, and the vision to see
- 17:03Speaker 2: obstacles as opportunities. Now I thought of you because just
- 17:08Speaker 2: reading all your books, I was like, personally and professionally,
- 17:11Speaker 2: it seems like that has been your journey. Absolutely absolutely,
- 17:15Speaker 2: So I gotta ask, what is the broke dish that
- 17:18Speaker 2: you would have had us eating in my studio?
- 17:21Speaker 6: I really don't know.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I was racking my brain when they kept telling me,
- 17:28Speaker 1: and I watched the show and I'm like, they kept
- 17:30Speaker 1: you know, you got to have a broke dish and
- 17:32Speaker 1: I'm like, I didn't really have a broke dish coming up.
- 17:35Speaker 1: And the reason I say that is because even though
- 17:36Speaker 1: we were poor, I didn't realize we were poor until
- 17:41Speaker 1: I got older, because you know, I grew up in
- 17:43Speaker 1: Monks Corner, South Carolina, and you know, when you grow
- 17:45Speaker 1: up in a ruined area like that, everybody is pretty
- 17:48Speaker 1: much doing the same. Like, you know, you might have
- 17:51Speaker 1: a couple of individuals who got a house that's better
- 17:53Speaker 1: than yours, but for the most part, people were growing
- 17:56Speaker 1: up in double ye trailers and we're growing up in
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know, like small subberns like my grandma used to have.
- 18:01Speaker 6: But the one thing.
- 18:02Speaker 1: That we always had was food in funny food, funny
- 18:08Speaker 1: and family literally, you know. So it's like the things
- 18:12Speaker 1: that people would call broke meals or the things that
- 18:13Speaker 1: I still love now, Like I love grits and eggs.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You give me some scrambled eggs with some grits and butter,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm good.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Like my grandma used to make this.
- 18:22Speaker 1: She used to make cheese toast. So she would just
- 18:25Speaker 1: take the toast. My mouth started water and thinking about it.
- 18:28Speaker 1: She would just take the toast and like you know,
- 18:30Speaker 1: put the butter on the center and then put a
- 18:31Speaker 1: slice of cheese and literally warm that up.
- 18:34Speaker 6: And I would drink that with a cup of tea.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And now that I think about it, I'm like, oh,
- 18:39Speaker 1: that was like the meals that they were giving us
- 18:41Speaker 1: because that's what they could afford to give us, like
- 18:43Speaker 1: even you know, but it was amazing that it still
- 18:46Speaker 1: tasted good.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Like it don't make me feel like something.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It's something that I still enjoy now, you know, so
- 18:54Speaker 1: to me, that's not It might be a broke dish,
- 18:56Speaker 1: but I still love it.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I love hearing guests say that they were broke but
- 18:59Speaker 2: they didn't realized they were broke. But in those types
- 19:02Speaker 2: of cities, what I did notice is that, yeah, everyone
- 19:05Speaker 2: looked the same. But what differentiated kids from knowing whether
- 19:08Speaker 2: they were broke was at least I don't know, we're
- 19:10Speaker 2: close in age, but it was the like kicks, Like
- 19:13Speaker 2: were you going to school with the cool kicks or something?
- 19:16Speaker 6: So or nah, I ain't had none of those.
- 19:18Speaker 1: My dad, I remember, I wanted they used to be
- 19:21Speaker 1: these boots called high tech boots, and my dad they
- 19:25Speaker 1: they saw the boot leg version that pay less, and
- 19:27Speaker 1: I wanted them so bad that I'm like y'all get
- 19:29Speaker 1: the bootleg version that.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Pay less, and they didn't.
- 19:31Speaker 2: The kids didn't noticing me.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Well, no, I woke up one morning and my dad
- 19:34Speaker 1: had the high tech sitting by my bed.
- 19:36Speaker 6: So I was like, oh, shoot, you know what I mean.
- 19:38Speaker 1: So I actually had the real you know, all black
- 19:41Speaker 1: high texts, you know, So I didn't have like the
- 19:44Speaker 1: Jordans and all of that stuff like that. I don't
- 19:46Speaker 1: I don't even what kind of sneakers did I have.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Back then, But I'm saying in that environment, that wasn't
- 19:51Speaker 2: the thing that differentiated a poor kid from it because
- 19:53Speaker 2: in those environments everyone's technically in the same economic structure.
- 19:57Speaker 2: But I remember growing up in upstate New York where
- 20:00Speaker 2: even though we were all kind of in the same category,
- 20:04Speaker 2: there were some kids that would go to school wearing
- 20:06Speaker 2: Jordan's or Nikes, and then they would look at the
- 20:08Speaker 2: kids and say, we're payless and be like, okay, you're poor.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And that's how as a child you knew you were poor.
- 20:12Speaker 1: But the people who had the Jordans and stuff when
- 20:14Speaker 1: I was growing up with the drug dealers for the
- 20:16Speaker 1: most part, you know, I mean, either the drug dealers
- 20:18Speaker 1: are like the football players because you know, people in
- 20:23Speaker 1: their minds like all these people are going places, so
- 20:25Speaker 1: you know, let me throw them some shoes or something
- 20:27Speaker 1: like that. But for the most part, the drug dealers
- 20:29Speaker 1: had to fly kicks that I remember, you know, growing up.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I don't even remember what I didn't. I'm trying to
- 20:35Speaker 1: sit there and try, like, what did that wear back then?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Sneak awise, I had some converse because you know, Snoop
- 20:39Speaker 1: Dogg came out in like ninety two ninety three, so
- 20:41Speaker 1: we had the converse all stars.
- 20:44Speaker 6: You know, That's all I could really think of.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So take me back to the cheese toast, which by
- 20:49Speaker 2: the way, I did have. On the show. Someone had
- 20:50Speaker 2: did it with sugar and that was impressed.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Mine was stray cheese toast, the butter with a slice
- 20:57Speaker 1: of cheese, cup of tea. That's what my grandmother would
- 21:00Speaker 1: give us. And I can even still right now think
- 21:02Speaker 1: about that, that feeling of having that, like it was
- 21:07Speaker 1: just an amazing meal. I can't remember that. That wasn't
- 21:11Speaker 1: even breakfast. That might have just been like, yo, you
- 21:12Speaker 1: just got home from school. You might get some cheese
- 21:14Speaker 1: TOAs with with with a cup of tea, you know,
- 21:17Speaker 1: definitely like I said, gritch and eggs for breakfast.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And you keep referencing your grandma's house. Is there a
- 21:22Speaker 2: reason because did you stay with her?
- 21:25Speaker 4: No?
- 21:26Speaker 1: Well, when I was young, my mother, my mother was
- 21:30Speaker 1: a school teacher, you know, and my grandmother was a
- 21:31Speaker 1: lunch lady. Right, So you know, I grew up in
- 21:35Speaker 1: the era when you was in fifth grade.
- 21:37Speaker 6: You know, you.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Get I could get dropped off at my grandma house
- 21:40Speaker 1: and wait there till the adults come. And you know,
- 21:42Speaker 1: I would never dare do that with my kids now,
- 21:44Speaker 1: but you know, just back then, life was different. So
- 21:47Speaker 1: I would literally wait till my mom came home from school.
- 21:50Speaker 1: So I spent so much time, you know, at my
- 21:52Speaker 1: grandmother's house. Like so, yeah, I spent a lot of
- 21:55Speaker 1: time over there. Again, thank you for tuning into The
