Transcript
- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Man walks into a bar with a
- 0:12giraffe. They both get pissed.
- 0:14The giraffe falls over. The man goes to leave and the
- 0:16bartender says Oi can't leave that lion there.
- 0:19The man says no, it's not a lion, it's a giraffe.
- 0:22Welcome to watch your least favorite scary movie.
- 0:24The podcaster we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and the
- 0:27absurd, and all of our favorite and the least favorite scary
- 0:30movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:32movie rightfully has this fan base.
- 0:33Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:36My name is Jesse. And welcome to another episode
- 0:38as we are diving back into the zombie genre and we are talking
- 0:43about 28 Days later. Yeah, or welcome if this is your
- 0:46first. Episode or welcome.
- 0:47Yeah. Thanks for coming here.
- 0:48Yeah, it's. Good time, Good movies to
- 0:52choose. Because, I don't know.
- 0:54I like this movie. Okay.
- 0:57And that's the. Episode Podcast over.
- 0:58All right, okay, cool. Before we get into that, do you
- 1:01have any announcements? Yes, for our budget tier, for
- 1:07our budget tier patrons. We have a bonus episode that
- 1:11should have been released by the time this episode airs, and we
- 1:15actually decided to do something that we've talked about for
- 1:18about a year now, which is to go out of the horror genre and do a
- 1:21review on a comedy. Yeah, comedy.
- 1:25Scifi romance. Yeah, there's like a little bit
- 1:28of Calmron going on there. Calmron.
- 1:31Calmron, yeah. There's like, OK, it's, it's
- 1:37Palm Springs. Jesse picked it, yeah.
- 1:39And it has a little bit of existential dread in it.
- 1:43Yeah. So I think that it's still kind
- 1:45of if that's your thing you like.
- 1:48Still feel in space? It's right in the middle, on the
- 1:51scale between from Groundhog Day to Happy Death Day.
- 1:57Yeah, I agree with that. Yeah, it's right there in the
- 1:56middle, firmly in the. So yeah, we did that.
- 2:00We talked about it. It's pretty much like a normal
- 2:02episode. So you know for our patrons
- 2:05budget tier, it's there for you guys to.
- 2:07Listen if you like it. And yeah, if it's cool with you
- 2:11guys for us to keep doing this sort of thing, then let us know.
- 2:15Yeah, and we'll actually be having a bonus poll out for
- 2:17budget tier patrons, just to get an idea of the types of bonus
- 2:21episodes you like. Yeah, cuz we wanna get you guys
- 2:23stuff you like. Yeah.
- 2:24All right. Well.
- 2:26Other than that, I've got our poll results.
- 2:29OK, so we figured for the Saw movies, we're just gonna ask
- 2:34everybody which traps from that movie do you all think that you
- 2:37could survive? Yeah, we're asking of you all
- 2:40the same questions we ask of ourselves.
- 2:43Yeah, cuz I mean, I'm just genuinely curious about that
- 2:46because those traps are pretty fucking difficult.
- 2:49Gnarly I. Want to see who all?
- 2:51Like has a lot of faith in themselves and who just doesn't
- 2:54believe in themselves at all, so.
- 2:57I wanna know what skills people have.
- 2:59That's true too. Yeah.
- 3:00Cuz everybody. Yeah, it's unique to every
- 3:02person. Their options were the reverse
- 3:04bear trap, the barbed wire maze. The candlelit puzzle is what I
- 3:09called it. I don't really know what else
- 3:11you would call that. Yeah.
- 3:12That's a hard one to name. He's got a candle and he's got
- 3:14to find the numbers to, yeah, get his poison out of the
- 3:17system, whatever. And then we got the Adam Gordon
- 3:19bathroom. Yeah, situation So.
- 3:21Either. Bros, Yeah.
- 3:23The broth room, if you will. The broth room, yes.
- 3:26That was bad. That didn't work.
- 3:27That's okay. I'll leave it in humble myself.
- 3:31Let people know I do make bad jokes once in a while too.
- 3:33It happens when it happens this. All okay.
- 3:37So on Instagram, 15% think that they can do the reverse Bear
- 3:41trap. Okay. 38% think they can do the
- 3:44barbed wire maze. OK, nobody thinks they can do
- 3:46the candlelit puzzle, OK? 46% believe they can do the Adam
- 3:51Gordon bathroom. OK.
- 3:53And on Twitter. Those 46%, I want to know which,
- 3:58if they're Adam or they're Gordon.
- 4:00Yeah, because it's different, but I mean it's kind of the same
- 4:03still, but. I saw a red in response from I
- 4:06want to say it was from Chad who.
- 4:08Yeah. Plant it himself in the Gordon
- 4:10position. Yeah, it's using your scoopy
- 4:13method. Yeah, you gotta get the phone
- 4:15and then, yeah, as he said, you can make calls with it.
- 4:18You can do the 911 dial, which never thought of that before,
- 4:22but it's honestly true. That phones have.
- 4:25Even if they only receive calls, you can still do that because
- 4:28it's a safety feature. Very smart chat.
- 4:31We would all need to consult you going forward.
- 4:35OK, on Twitter. Actually, honestly though, if
- 4:37you were writing a song movie, wouldn't it be best to get some
- 4:40of those most, like, obnoxious film fans to, like, look at your
- 4:46traps and be like, all right, how are you handling this?
- 4:49Like, do you see a different way out?
- 4:52I can see it for song movies. And I think also like, screams
- 4:55where like, OK, so who's like the person that is like obvious,
- 4:58You know what I mean? Yeah, like, yeah, consult the
- 5:00people that. Make this their life.
- 5:03And then like Final Destination, they're like, does this seem too
- 5:06absurd? And test audiences are like,
- 5:07yes, absolutely. And they're like, cool approved.
- 5:10Yes, OK. Over on Twitter, 25% think they
- 5:14can do the reverse bear trap, 13 believe in themselves to do the
- 5:18barbed wire fence maze, 13% think they can do the candle
- 5:22light thing. OK.
- 5:23And 49 think that they can do the bathroom?
- 5:26All right. We already did ours, yeah.
- 5:28So we both. We're both barbed wire.
- 5:30Yeah, I actually ended up making mine in the bathroom, OK,
- 5:33because I can smash my foot to get out of there.
- 5:35For those who chose the bear trap, though, I'm very curious
- 5:38about how you think you could do that in a minute.
- 5:41Cut somebody's tummy open, get a key, unlock the thing.
- 5:45That too much pressure for me too fast?
- 5:48I don't think I could do it. All right, let's talk about 28
- 5:51Days later now, shall we? We shall 28 days later, released
- 5:56November 1st, 2002. OK.
- 5:58It later released in 2003 in the United States.
- 6:01It released over in the UK 1st, and then it released
- 6:05internationally. We watched it on DVD because
- 6:08that's the only way you can watch this movie.
- 6:10There are no streaming options. There's no way to rent it.
- 6:14I had nothing I could put on my wear to watch this week.
- 6:16And I was like, what do I put? Just a sad face and Travis
- 6:19laughing. And I was like, yeah, I do the
- 6:20sad face, so. I mean it's.
- 6:22I. Think I swear to watch.
- 6:24It's a weird thing. We've never had that happen
- 6:26before. Yeah, normally you can at least
- 6:28like pay $20 to rent it on Prime or something.
- 6:31Well, I was looking it up and apparently it's a rights
- 6:36dispute. That sounds about right.
- 6:38Yeah, which is weird, because even though rights have been
- 6:41like an issue for Friday 13th, you can still find those
- 6:44streaming online. I'm pretty sure it's the same
- 6:46thing with Spice World. It's yeah, like there there are
- 6:50several many of us that would love to relive our youth and
- 6:54watch Spice World again and it's just not feasible unless you
- 6:58have a VCR. Which, guess what?
- 7:00Vcr's are fucking expensive. Yeah, if you try and buy them on
- 7:04the line, I bet you could find some use.
- 7:06I mean, yeah, you could buy like a refurbished one, but then
- 7:09you're like, you know, ohh is it actually gonna be good?
- 7:11So I mean, then I could go dig out my Old Spice World VHS,
- 7:15assuming my mom still has it. That sucks that it's stuck on
- 7:18VHS. I hate those.
- 7:19Yeah, they're like, I can God, I'm picturing the cover of it so
- 7:23perfectly. It was not a clamshell, it was
- 7:25the. Little cardboard, yeah.
- 7:27I know what you're talking about.
- 7:28Yeah, yeah. Well, anyway, we got the world.
- 7:31Spice up your life. We got lucky finding with some
- 7:33goodwill, so I didn't realize how lucky we were to actually
- 7:37have it, cuz I didn't think that there was no way to watch it
- 7:39without. Yeah, it was just like.
- 7:41We were there. We were thrifting.
- 7:44And you're like, oh, hey, 28 days later.
- 7:47Haven't seen this in a minute. It's a dollar.
- 7:49Yeah. And that was it.
- 7:51And now we realize we have gold. Yes.
- 7:53It's not like when we were desperately looking for the
- 7:55unrated version of Stay Alive. Yeah, that was a miracle that we
- 7:58found that. That was awesome.
- 8:00I love that. Man, those people that that
- 8:02booth at Scare Fest must have been like, what is wrong with
- 8:05them? Because you would think we had
- 8:06struck gold. I was like, you guys like, ah,
- 8:10the Frankie Munich era. Yes, you found the best piece of
- 8:14media from that era. OK, well.
- 8:19Let's get back into it. OK, so this is written by Alex
- 8:22Garland, directed by Danny Boyle, music by John Murphy, and
- 8:28special effects. There's like a shit ton of
- 8:29people, but I got the main makeup artist, which was Cliff
- 8:34Wallace. But again, there's a lot of
- 8:36people that worked on this. Starring Killian Murphy playing
- 8:39Jim, Naomi Harris playing Selena Brandon Gleeson as Frank.
- 8:45Megan Burns as Hannah and Christopher Eckelson as Major
- 8:49West. Fuck that guy.
- 8:52Fuck that guy. Yes, we'll talk about him plenty
- 8:56here in a minute. Fuck that guy.
- 8:58All right, it's time to play our game, Jesse.
- 9:01Budget or budget? What do you think?
- 9:06I'm let's see, I'm gonna go with.
- 9:10Bugged head, but like the upper limits of it.
- 9:13You would be correct. This movie's budget was $8
- 9:16million, OK? Yeah, OK.
- 9:19Which is, you know, that's so decent.
- 9:20In 2002 time, that's also even more impressive than like
- 9:24nowadays. I mean, this is also Danny
- 9:26Boyle, who, like, had directed Trainspotting before this.
- 9:30Like, that's true. He's like a name at this point.
- 9:33God Trainspotting. It's a weird movie.
- 9:36Also, OK, so basically if you just want to have all of the
- 9:40emotions, pull up Danny Boyle, I guess.
- 9:44Yeah, he's got the whole spectrum.
- 9:46For you, yeah, you can laugh, You can cry.
- 9:48You can wonder what it means to be man.
- 9:52Yeah. Or you can, you know, fear a
- 9:55viral disease. You know what I mean?
- 9:57Like, it's a he's got you covered.
- 10:00So, OK, the opening box office for this was $10 million.
- 10:04OK. And the worldwide gross is
- 10:0584,000,000. OK, good for them.
- 10:08They did pretty well. IMDb score of 7.5.
- 10:12That's you know what? Yeah.
- 10:13Good for them. Yeah, it's really high.
- 10:14Which is good for them. Yeah, very good.
- 10:16I got 3 movies here that I feel sure a very similar theme.
- 10:21First off, we have cabin fever. OK.
- 10:25Yeah, that's. Appropriate so Cabin Fever
- 10:28released September 14th, 2002. Budget of 1.5 million with a
- 10:34worldwide gross of 30 million. Okay IMDb of 5.6 Okay.
- 10:39Don't think I really need to say why that one's connected.
- 10:42It's like another disease that's infecting people.
- 10:44Next up, Resident Evil that released March 15th 2002 with a
- 10:49budget of 33 million. Worldwide gross of 102 million
- 10:53and then IMDb of 6.6. Okay.
- 10:57That also feels very appropriate.
- 10:59Yeah, well, it inspired Alex Garland to write the script for
- 11:03this. Like, he had forgotten about
- 11:05zombies. And then he played the game and
- 11:07he's like, oh shit, yeah, zombies are.
- 11:08Things zombies are kind of fun. Yeah, they.
- 11:11Are yeah. And the final movie?
- 11:13fear.com. Because shit goes viral.
- 11:18That's a stretch, but it's a stretch I will gladly accept
- 11:21because I love how dumb. Thank you.
- 11:23OK, so that released August 30th, 2000. 1002 with a budget
- 11:28of $40 million and our worldwide gross of 18,000,000.
- 11:33Yep, Yep. IMDb score 3 point. 4.
- 11:39I remember talking about that with JW and Flex because that we
- 11:43were talking about Halloween resurrection, which also came
- 11:45out this year. Yeah, And they all were like, my
- 11:49God, that fucking movie. Like we were all.
- 11:51We all felt very bad for fear.com and we discussed it
- 11:53because of. How much money they invested in
- 11:56it and how poorly it did. Yeah, but here's the thing.
- 12:00It's not a good movie. I can't remember.
- 12:02I'm and you guys know I'm generally overly kind to the bad
- 12:07movies, yeah. And I mean I'm like.
- 12:11God, I can't remember. Like, it's been so, so long
- 12:13since I've watched it. It's not a $45 million budget
- 12:17movie. I don't even know how they blew
- 12:18that type of. Budget on like.
- 12:20Maybe they like actually had to register the domain fear.com and
- 12:23like somebody had like. Purchase it.
- 12:25Okay, I was gonna say it doesn't cost that much to register a
- 12:28dummy, but yeah, somebody purchased it and you could buy
- 12:31it from them. Could be, could be.
- 12:33I can see that. All right, I've got 4 taglines.
- 12:36So the one that's on the poster, Day one Exposure.
- 12:41Day three, Infection. Day 8, Epidemic.
- 12:45Day 15, Evacuation. Day 20 devastation.
- 12:51Okay. Most of that timeline makes
- 12:53sense, except for day one and day three, because pretty much
- 12:56we've learned that it goes second one exposure, 2nd 20
- 13:02infection. Yeah, it's it's not a matter of
- 13:04days, Yeah, yeah. But the rest of the timeline
- 13:08tracks with what Jim learns. That's true.
- 13:11This is more dramatic right here.
- 13:13Like, it's not. It's like embellishing a little
- 13:15bit, but yeah. Yeah, but it's embellishing in
- 13:18the wrong way. You're right, it's more
- 13:21terrifying. It would be like second one,
- 13:23second two. Yeah, you have 20 seconds to say
- 13:25goodbye to your loved one before you bash their skull and have
- 13:28fun. Just a tiny bit of blood in the
- 13:31eyeball. Instant, instant transformation.
- 13:33Like you're you're enraged now, yeah.
- 13:38OK, Next up his fear began when he woke up alone.
- 13:42His terror began when he realized he wasn't.
- 13:46That's good. That's actually really good.
- 13:47That's that's creepy. That's all.
- 13:49That's like a short story, like, you know how they do.
- 13:51Too short? Ohh yeah.
- 13:52Short story story. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:54I feel like that would qualify #3.
- 13:56The days are numbered 28 days. The days are numbered.
- 14:02I, you know, I would like that if we actually got title cards
- 14:05of the days, 'cause I'd be like, haha, it's true, it's making fun
- 14:08of itself. That's true.
- 14:10I mean, it does say 28 days later, two times in this movie.
- 14:13It does so dot dot dot. Yeah, exactly.
- 14:17And the final be thankful for everything, for soon there will
- 14:21be nothing that doesn't work for me.
- 14:23I wish that they had the thing in the church, the repent the
- 14:28and is extremely fucking nigh, I thought.
- 14:30That's a good tagline. I thought you're saying like the
- 14:33quote from the priest, which was like, it's like, yeah, I mean
- 14:37that hits too like. How do you write that out
- 14:41phonetically? Pew.
- 14:44QU EE EE P/E WQ. All right, you know what I'm
- 14:54calling it now? That's our new tagline.
- 14:58Okay. I will write down the spelling
- 15:01as I edit. Okay.
- 15:02Yeah, that works for me. Okay.
- 15:06Fun facts. So, as I said before, Garland
- 15:11was influenced by Resident Evil whenever he did this.
- 15:14But funny enough, Boyle. Danny Boyle wasn't really a fan
- 15:17of zombies, but he enjoyed the scripts.
- 15:20Why? I was reading, he said.
- 15:21Like, he read the first Sin pages and he's like, holy shit,
- 15:23this is like fascinating somebody just walking through an
- 15:26empty London like, it just grabs you.
- 15:29Yeah, so he was like hooked from that.
- 15:31Plus he had already done a movie.
- 15:34He adapted something that Garland had done previously,
- 15:36too. So.
- 15:37They're already bubby. Yeah, they got bubby, bubby
- 15:40relationship right there. So they realized that zombie
- 15:46movies, they kind of focused on like current fears of the time.
- 15:50So whenever it was like Romero's stuff, apparently it was more
- 15:54like like nuclear related, like you know, apocalyptic kind of
- 16:00like like resources I think is what it was.
- 16:02That's what they were saying. But they said that the current
- 16:05fear that was going on when they made this was.
- 16:09Like viruses, things spreading through, like, you know, like an
- 16:13upcoming pandemic. And actually, like I put it on
- 16:16the making of Thing from the DVD, the 1st 50% of the making
- 16:22of is basically just a documentary about diseases.
- 16:26Oh shit. Like it was like, it wasn't even
- 16:27talking about the movie. They were just like, yeah, like
- 16:29we're fucking terrified. Like pandemics are.
- 16:31There's going to be a pandemic coming around like anytime now.
- 16:35And this is like, really weird watching now after the fact.
- 16:38Like, yeah, Like it's going to happen sooner rather than later.
- 16:41Like this. Just like we're in a unique
- 16:44situation generationally, where like movies that we loved Once
- 16:50Upon a Time are going to hit so differently now for the rest of
- 16:53our lives. It's true.
- 16:54And it was just so weird seeing that.
- 16:58It's like whenever, like the other day I was watching a
- 17:00video. And like, it's a public freak
- 17:02out video. But it was New Year's Day,
- 17:05January 1st, like at midnight 2020.
- 17:08And everybody's like, yeah, New Year baby.
- 17:10Like, you know, they're like celebrating because like, you
- 17:12know, it's gonna be a great one. And then like, I'm like, oh
- 17:14shit, guys like 3 months from now it's gonna like, cuz like
- 17:18the guy in the video is like, yeah, this is going viral.
- 17:21And people in the comments like, Oh yeah, it went viral.
- 17:22All right. Yeah, it's so, yeah, that shit.
- 17:27It's kind of, it makes me sad, honestly, like going back and
- 17:30seeing that type of stuff. Yeah.
- 17:33But they were talking about like a specific disease that was
- 17:36going on at that time. It was foot and mouth disease,
- 17:41which I had never heard of until they had talked about it.
- 17:45But it was a thing that was going around with animals, where
- 17:49they would develop a fever that would last for days and then
- 17:52they would suddenly develop. Blisters in their mouth, OK.
- 17:56And like eventually, like it said that they would succumb to
- 18:00lameness, which I don't. Like you like not being able to
- 18:05walk or walk super well. OK, so then I guess it just kind
- 18:08of attacks you and you just can't really function.
- 18:11I'm not sure if that's like the preferred term nowadays.
- 18:14Lameness. Yeah, well, that's it.
- 18:16Was on Wikipedia, is how I read it, because I just went to like
- 18:18a Wikipedia page of the actual disease.
- 18:20OK. So I mean, they could be
- 18:22incorrect on there too. It's people editing that shit.
- 18:25Yeah, I'm just reading what I saw.
- 18:27It was a thing that was actually like affecting Britain in 2001,
- 18:31which is why I think they were like super focused on it.
- 18:34Like to the extent where they like had to postpone their
- 18:38election, they had to postpone like live events, like sport,
- 18:41sporting events and stuff like that.
- 18:43So kind of like another pandemic type situation.
- 18:46And it makes sense why they would start this one off.
- 18:48Like coming from an animal? Yeah, exactly.
- 18:50Like which, like, I forget the term where a disease can
- 18:52actually pass from an animal to a human.
- 18:55Yeah, those are pretty rare. Well, that's what they were.
- 18:59And they were like in this little documentary thing they
- 19:01were talking about. Like, yeah, at the time it's
- 19:04only affecting animals and humans can't contract it, but it
- 19:08can evolve over time, which as we know there's a thing that
- 19:13happens to the. Not so depressing facts.
- 19:16Yay. So it was filmed entirely on
- 19:21digital video, which was a new type of technique.
- 19:24At this time, things were still being done by film, but they
- 19:30said that this method actually saved them a lot of time and
- 19:33effort and money because they were able to actually set up
- 19:37shots and film them really quickly.
- 19:41Especially whenever they were doing the opening stuff when
- 19:43they were filming London, which they said if they had to use
- 19:47actual film for that right there, it would have taken way
- 19:51more time. It would have like ate up way
- 19:52more of their budget. Yeah, but with this right here,
- 19:55yeah, cuz you need multiple people to like man the equipment
- 19:57and stuff like that. With the digital camera you can
- 19:59just set up, shoot it, boom, go. Somebody involved with host.
- 20:03I don't remember if it was the director or somebody else on the
- 20:07crew that they posted their setup for how they filmed host
- 20:11and they did use laptops, but it was actually like iPhones taped
- 20:14to the back of the Yeah, and because they all had to set them
- 20:18up themselves because hey, Pandemic and like, that's why I
- 20:23forget which character it is. But one of them, like you can
- 20:25only see half her face. Sometimes it's because she set
- 20:27hers up wrong. Oh really?
- 20:28Yeah. Well, that's like real too
- 20:30though. Yeah.
- 20:30I like that. That's like an on, yeah, it's
- 20:33like and it's one of those that like if you tried to do it
- 20:35yourself like it would come across as like trying to make it
- 20:37look. Yeah, authentic, but like,
- 20:40that's. Like, that's a happy accident.
- 20:41Yeah, you just gotta like, roll with it.
- 20:43That was good stuff. So they also chose digital video
- 20:47because they wanted to give the film like a different type of
- 20:49texture, as they called it. With it being an apocalyptic
- 20:53type movie, They wanted to like, make it feel different, feel
- 20:56weird. They said that they fucked with
- 20:58the colors a little bit too, but giving the digital.
- 21:03Effect just kind of gave it this certain type of bleakness and
- 21:06now it just feels very 2002, yeah.
- 21:10It does, which they said. The only downside is the picture
- 21:13quality suffers, which that is true.
- 21:16Like it's like I was saying before, like DVD, I don't think
- 21:19that there is a blurry of this exists.
- 21:21But like DVD is fine for this, you don't need to upgrade it.
- 21:23If you are upgrading it, you're just.
- 21:25It's not doing anything. There's no information there to
- 21:27extract from this. And that was your whole thing
- 21:29too. When you sell it for a dollar
- 21:30and you're like, I don't care about having this on DVD because
- 21:32it's digital, it won't make a difference if I get it on
- 21:35Blu-ray or 4. K It was shot on shitty
- 21:37camcorder shit like digital video, but by doing that they
- 21:41were able to do fun little tricks.
- 21:44So when you're recording with that, you can alter the frame
- 21:48rate of what you're recording, which is like how they got a lot
- 21:50of the jenky movements from the they infect the people.
- 21:55And I also got like, those shots.
- 21:56I don't know if you noticed this, but I kind of noticed it.
- 21:58Whenever it's like raining, like you can like see like parts of
- 22:01like the raindrops perfectly still like, yeah, I like this
- 22:05looks like you're looking through a window.
- 22:07Yeah, yeah, it was like a weird effect to it.
- 22:09But like he, like noticed. He's like that was intentional.
- 22:11Like we just wanted it to look really strange.
- 22:14Well, and the whole thing. It gives the whole thing kind of
- 22:16a dream like quality. Yeah, exactly.
- 22:20Yeah, or nightmare like I guess in this scenario.
- 22:23Yeah. And like talking more about the
- 22:26London thing, They there is the way that they did that.
- 22:28They were able to like shut down streets for like an hour at a
- 22:32time. And they would just like move
- 22:33around and just get pickup shots.
- 22:36Which it's kind of crazy looking at it because like getting like
- 22:39the entirety of London and the shots that they got looking as
- 22:43bare as it was, like it was. I swear I read somewhere like
- 22:48years ago that they digitally altered people out of it.
- 22:52No, they didn't for this, OK. They actually like, had people
- 22:55like, they had like cops like block the streets.
- 22:58And they also said that they had, they hired people to like
- 23:01go and just ask people like, hey, we're making a movie, Can
- 23:04you like maybe wait here for an hour or find another route?
- 23:08And people were kind of upset but understandable or
- 23:12understanding. So they just kind of went along
- 23:14with it. But yeah, they were able to get
- 23:17the shots like really fast because it was the digital
- 23:20cameras. So they were able to just, boom,
- 23:21set up, get a shot of him walking, boom, move on.
- 23:24And they had 10 cameras for it. So it was really easy for them
- 23:27to do. And Speaking of filming for
- 23:29this, they said that it started great, but it went from great to
- 23:35horrible. So first of all.
- 23:39Funding for this thing was nearly impossible for them to
- 23:41get. The entire time that they were
- 23:43shooting this, they were barely able to fund it at all, to the
- 23:49degree to where they actually had to ask Christopher Eccleston
- 23:53for an emergency pay cut, which he like he accepted, but.
- 23:58It kind of fucking sucks. They had to do that just to keep
- 24:00the film going. Hey, we're gonna cut your salary
- 24:03and also we're gonna make everybody who sees you fucking
- 24:05hate. You.
- 24:06Yeah. You're gonna be the shoot.
- 24:08That's fun. Most hateable character.
- 24:10Also, we're paying you less now, yeah?
- 24:12Also, your hair desperately needs some toner.
- 24:16Doing it for the craft. So not only with all that going
- 24:21on, which kind of sucks, but also while they were filming,
- 24:239/11 happened. Oh wow.
- 24:25Which? Really.
- 24:27They put everybody on set on edge the rest of the time, kind
- 24:32of an uncomfortable situation to be in.
- 24:34And by the time they got to the end of the film, they didn't
- 24:38have an ending because they ran out of money.
- 24:41They couldn't film an actual ending for this thing.
- 24:44Don't know how they got the funding for that in the end
- 24:46because we end up having alternate endings.
- 24:48So they got enough money for like 3 things.
- 24:52I was. To be fair, the alternate
- 24:53endings are very feasibly, just like a second take with the gym
- 25:00dead. Yeah, that's true.
- 25:02And then with like, what the hell though, They just, they're
- 25:04like Killian, just take. Five off to the side, yeah, go
- 25:07to craft service, which probably was nothing at that point with
- 25:10their budget, yeah. That's right.
- 25:12So drink some tap water. Some fucking crack.
- 25:14Just over here. Get these from Skyline.
- 25:16Yeah, Skyline over in Cincinnati.
- 25:22They're over in England. It's like, yeah, we went to
- 25:24Cincinnati to get these. I don't fucking.
- 25:27That's my bad thing for the day, OK?
- 25:30No, I think that the the hospital thing had to have been
- 25:33extra at least where they take him to the hospital.
- 25:35Well, because they show flashes of that in the like official
- 25:38ending, OK. Because they like show her like,
- 25:41you know, needle. Come on Jim.
- 25:45OK, Gurney. Yeah, Gurney, yes, I can tell
- 25:50you. I know that they didn't go with
- 25:53that one. Because they showed it to test
- 25:55audiences and they thought that with him dying there that for
- 26:02the girls it spelled like certain doom.
- 26:04They didn't think that they could survive.
- 26:06Well, that's sexist. It is a little bit, yeah.
- 26:14I could see, like, them being like, oh, well, that's kind of
- 26:17depressing because their whole thing was about, you know,
- 26:20learning to embrace the joy other people give you.
- 26:09Well, entirely, but so they added like more to like a happy.
- 26:39Like Tom Atkins. Like, that's a big take away
- 26:27from it. Yeah, I could see that as
- 26:29feedback. But these women's, they can't,
- 26:32they can't take care of themselves.
- 26:34What are they gonna do? There's no malls.
- 26:36They can't go. He was someone in that crowd
- 26:41there. He's like, they're fucked,
- 26:43right? Yeah, women, they're gonna die.
- 26:45Am I right? Okay.
- 26:48That's all my fun facts. Good.
- 26:50All right. So, Jesse, what did you think
- 26:52about this movie? What's?
- 26:54It bad. Ugly.
- 26:55This movie is fantastic. I remember watching it when it
- 26:59came out and watching it repeatedly after it came out
- 27:02because we owned it on DVD with the little, the little side
- 27:06Clippy thing you. Know those are.
- 27:08It's classic. It is just always legitimately
- 27:13terrifying because you don't get those moments of build up that
- 27:17you feel like you do in a lot of other zombie movies.
- 27:20Yeah, cuz it's just it's so quick, It's so quick, you don't
- 27:24have time to think about it and you have to like process it
- 27:28afterwards. And that kind of hits more of
- 27:31the existential dread that goes along, which that's ultimately
- 27:34the story of most zombie movies, most good zombie movies.
- 27:38Existential dread? Yeah.
- 27:39Like thinking about what it means for humanity as a whole.
- 27:42Zombie movies, always. Zombie movies and shows always
- 27:45bring out the worst in people. Yeah, exactly.
- 27:47Yeah, and that's the whole point.
- 27:49And this puts a different spin on it because you're like you're
- 27:51dealing with something that comes at you.
- 27:53So fast and everything changed so quickly.
- 27:56It's not even like a OK well, people were able to mobilize and
- 28:00we've got larger groups of people that are together.
- 28:03Like, you literally just have stragglers here and there.
- 28:05Yeah, yeah. Also, the music is just fucking
- 28:09insane. Especially that first scene.
- 28:10I love the. Like right when Kellyanne Murphy
- 28:15leaves the hospital and like it just gradually, like, picks up.
- 28:18Steve And you're just like uncomfortable because you're
- 28:21like, Oh my God, do you feel the dread with him?
- 28:24I used to listen to that song so much in high school.
- 28:27Like they like the bass whenever it just starts going like Oh my
- 28:30fucking God, yes, yeah, but yeah, it's just it's such a
- 28:34really good movie. Selena's A badass.
- 28:36I love a badass female character and I just there's just so
- 28:44there's so much heart to it to like with there's like little
- 28:47gut punch moments. Like his parents thinking that
- 28:50he died in the hospital and their little note that they
- 28:54leave to him anyway. And then when they're at that,
- 28:59that little like ruins out in the field and Jim's having a bad
- 29:03dream and Frank wakes him up and he says thanks dad.
- 29:07I know. I I went.
- 29:11Yeah, that hurt you like? Yeah, deeply.
- 29:14I could tell. So I just like, I think this is
- 29:17a maybe. It's got a lot of like force,
- 29:21both in terms of action and an emotion.
- 29:24So yeah, kind of like we were saying with Selena, though, I I
- 29:27feel like she had the biggest character arc like growth in the
- 29:31movie because. When you first see her in this
- 29:33movie, she's like hardcore, like no connections to anybody.
- 29:37And then by the end, she like, kind of finds a family.
- 29:40Yeah. It's nice.
- 29:41I like it, yeah. For me, like, I think that this
- 29:47movie is like style maxed. Like, it's just like style over
- 29:53substance. I think like atmospherically.
- 29:57It's. I don't know.
- 29:58I'd say it has substance to it. It has substance.
- 30:01But The thing is, and this was gonna be like, kind of where I
- 30:04was gonna like, I don't have a lot of bad things to say.
- 30:07But like, I was gonna say, like the story isn't necessarily
- 30:09unique. That's true.
- 30:10It's that's true, the story you see the ending coming with the
- 30:13soldiers from A. Mile, Yeah.
- 30:14The story's been told a dozen times.
- 30:16Like, you know, like, Oh yes, I'm pretty sure that's in Day of
- 30:18the Dead is exactly the asshole general down there.
- 30:21Humanity fucking sucks. Like we get it, It's been told
- 30:24with every zombie movie. It's not unique at all.
- 30:26There's nothing. Unique about this movie, but the
- 30:29atmosphere is what sets it apart for me.
- 30:31I don't think that I've seen a zombie movie that gets you put
- 30:34in that place like this one does.
- 30:37Because whenever you see him walking around London at the
- 30:40beginning and it's just empty like the ruins there, it's just
- 30:44insane man. Like it puts you in a place
- 30:46where you are uncomfortable. It's unsettling to see that
- 30:49because normally like big city, you're expecting to see a shit
- 30:53ton of people, but suddenly? Something that should be
- 30:55insanely populated has nothing, and it's just like a bunch of
- 30:59ruins. Yeah, it's great imagery.
- 31:06I mean, that's pretty much. I mean, you covered all the
- 31:08other things for me, but the atmosphere is something that I
- 31:10really just wanted to harp on. Okay.
- 31:14I guess I'll go ahead and say that my bad probably is, even
- 31:17though I think that the story has a lot of things to say, it
- 31:20probably doesn't have to be almost two hours long.
- 31:22No, it's way too long. I think because I remember like,
- 31:25at one point, like the girls were getting antsy for dinner
- 31:28and we're like, it's fine, The movie is almost over.
- 31:30The movie was not almost over. We're an hour and a half in and
- 31:33we still had another 23 minutes to go and like it.
- 31:38I mean, we like, we knew it was coming, you know what I mean?
- 31:41And it was told well, but I don't think, you know, trimming
- 31:45some of the fat would have been the worst thing in the world.
- 31:48Yeah, there's a lot of like there's a lot of scenes of like
- 31:52building up a connection with them and like slice of life type
- 31:56of stuff, which is good, important for the story that
- 31:59they're telling, for the character arcs that they're
- 32:01delivering. Like it matters, but like at
- 32:04certain point like you can cut away some of the stuff some
- 32:07places like, yeah. Like the dream.
- 32:11Like the fake out dreams, Like Killian Murphy's gym.
- 32:14He has several in this movie. It's like yeah, we don't need
- 32:16like every single one of his bad dreams in this.
- 32:21Is that all for your bed? Yeah.
- 32:23OK, yeah. That's really pretty much all I
- 32:24can think of. OK, yeah.
- 32:27Other than that, I think my main critique in this movie is that
- 32:30the audio is fucking terrible. Like to the point where.
- 32:36They I could barely hear anything.
- 32:38And we had it, Mac. I had our sound bar Max all.
- 32:41The way Oh, seriously. That was as loud as we got.
- 32:44It was like as loud as it goes. Oh my God, I thought we were
- 32:46like mid. No it.
- 32:48Was maxed out. And I know that we had like, the
- 32:50fan on for a minute, but even whenever I had the fan off,
- 32:53like, oh, that's why you turn the fan off.
- 32:55Yeah, cuz like I was just like, oh, you cooled down really
- 32:57quickly. I just couldn't fucking like
- 33:00even with the fan off, you just can't really hear the dialogue.
- 33:03It's just one of like whenever it gets loud and the the
- 33:07infected cause chaos, like it gets really loud and that's
- 33:11fine. But whenever it's just them
- 33:13having dialogue together, you have to kind of like, listen,
- 33:17Yeah, And without subtitles, I don't know if I'd be able to
- 33:19catch half the stuff that they say.
- 33:21Yeah. Yeah, all right.
- 33:24Ugly. I mean, obviously, like all of
- 33:27the stuff that happens at the Soldiers compound.
- 33:30Yeah, like, I get why that's there, and I get why it's there
- 33:35in almost every fucking zombie movie and show.
- 33:38But like, I'm really sick of the like, hey, when the zombie
- 33:42apocalypse comes, we're going to rape all the women I like.
- 33:46I'm. I'm kind of over that narrative.
- 33:47I get why it gets added in. Like, from a thematic
- 33:52standpoint, like, OK, we need to like people are first of all
- 33:56awful and second of all, we need to repopulate.
- 33:59But like. EW, like, I don't need, I don't
- 34:02need trauma on top of trauma on top of trauma on top of trauma.
- 34:05Like, especially because, like, that's a very real threat that
- 34:09women face without a zombie apocalypse.
- 34:13Like, I don't need it. Add it on here.
- 34:15Yeah, it doesn't. I agree with you.
- 34:17Like, like I said before, like it just doesn't need to be.
- 34:20They could have done like a oh, they're going to experiment on
- 34:23the people that show up. Like that would have made them
- 34:25evil soldier guys. Like, without the trope of like
- 34:29that, yeah. Like, yeah, we have the cure for
- 34:32the infection here and it's just a way to order people there to.
- 34:35Yes. You know, be subjects for like,
- 34:39trials. I feel like that would be a
- 34:40really, like, fucked up twist on it, yeah.
- 34:42I think so too. Yeah, you're right.
- 34:45Yeah. So that's a bad and ugly for
- 34:48this movie. Like, yeah, it's just not
- 34:50exactly original whenever it comes to that type of shit.
- 34:53Is that all for you? Yeah.
- 34:55I mean, that's that's the thing that sticks out.
- 34:56Like I like the movie is heartbreaking at plenty of
- 34:59points, but that's the only part where it's just achy.
- 35:05For me, the opening where they have all the chimps at the
- 35:09primary Research Center, especially the one that they
- 35:12have hooked up with, like all of it's just showing them footage
- 35:16of like chaos and just like. All the worst shit that you
- 35:20could see from people like from humanity.
- 35:22I'm gonna be honest, watching Mad God so recently like really
- 35:26ruined this opening scene for me cuz all I could think of was
- 35:29like the monkeys throwing shit at each other, OK?
- 35:32And then thinking about the hospital where they, like go
- 35:35into the guys like guts. Yeah, see, I was thinking of
- 35:40Dawn of the Dead 2004 where it opens with a montage of.
- 35:45It's the end of the world as we know it with like all kinds of
- 35:48chaos going on. Which I love that opening.
- 35:52But yeah, this one, it just made me more sad cuz like poor chimps
- 35:55they can't. Yeah, and they're just being
- 35:57tough subjects for some of the most fucked up shit.
- 36:00Yeah, even though some of them are infected and they're just
- 36:02trying to study it, but like you're feeding it aggressive
- 36:05material. Also, I feel like if you're just
- 36:09trying to study it, maybe do it more humanely I you know.
- 36:14I don't. Yeah, I, I which we see later
- 36:16that the general does the same thing because they've got Mailer
- 36:19chained up outside and he's literally just, you know, he's
- 36:23like, Oh yeah, we're studying him to understand the virus.
- 36:25But really, what he means is like we're waiting to see how
- 36:28long it takes him to starve to death.
- 36:29Which I mean, that's the sole experiment.
- 36:31Well, for somebody that's already infected like that, I
- 36:33think that that's fair. I know.
- 36:35I'm just saying, well, it does Like you kind of see in his
- 36:39eyes, like when he gets in there, he recognizes the
- 36:41building and it's like how much of him is still in there, you
- 36:44know? Yeah.
- 36:46There's a lot of things that could be like they're not
- 36:48exactly answered in this movie. Yeah, like that.
- 36:51And I I kind of like that we're able to speculate on it and draw
- 36:55our own interpretations because that's kind of what a lot of you
- 36:57know is happening for them in the movie too.
- 37:00Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 37:01You're kind of relating to them, yeah.
- 37:04The only other thing they have is just the whole position that
- 37:07they're in. Like especially with Selena in
- 37:09the beginning where she's had a companion in Mark and the 2nd
- 37:15that she sees that he could be infected.
- 37:17She's in the place where she has to kill him immediately, even
- 37:20though that there is like, doubt because you don't know what's
- 37:24like if he's been infected. But Oh no, Homi had a real bad
- 37:28poker face. Like you could see the panic in
- 37:30his. Oh really?
- 37:31Yeah, he looked up and he was like, no, he's that he's that
- 37:35guy in in every zombie movie. Except she doesn't have time to
- 37:38be like, no, tell the truth. She's like, OK, cool.
- 37:41Even then, like you're being accused, like that puts you in,
- 37:44it's like taking a lie detector test.
- 37:45So, like, you know what I mean? Like you're gonna be nervous no
- 37:47matter why. Especially with somebody like
- 37:49Selena, who I'm sure he's seen what she's capable of
- 37:52beforehand. Yeah, that's why you say no, I
- 37:54wasn't bitten. I just have a smear of blood on
- 37:56my arm. I know, but there's always that
- 37:57shred of doubt and I don't know, like I think that she was at
- 38:01that point in her. In her journey where, like any
- 38:06shred of doubt, she's going to kill you.
- 38:10OK. Absurd.
- 38:15Absurd, I guess. Absurd for me.
- 38:21Where did where did Frank get all this riot gear?
- 38:26Why are they playing Christmas music like just Frank?
- 38:33Just just Frank's apartment setup.
- 38:35Yeah, cuz you know, that's him. Because Hannah doesn't seem like
- 38:38the time. It would be like, yeah, let's
- 38:39play Christmas music right now. Like that was 100%, Frank.
- 38:43Yeah, actually that's one of my things was like Frank being in
- 38:46dad mode the entire time. Like even though it's like
- 38:48apocalypse, like whenever he has him over, he like becomes dad.
- 38:52Yeah, but I think it's, I could see the Christmas thing like,
- 38:54hey, like shitty things are happening.
- 38:55Let's go to like a happy day. Let's skip the Christmas.
- 38:59Yeah. To try and cheer her like his
- 39:01daughter off, because she's like, she's still pretty young,
- 39:04except he's got, like, this kind of domestic incompetence that is
- 39:08infuriating because he's having to ask Hannah, like, where stuff
- 39:11is located. And like, like, come on, it's
- 39:15just the two of you. You can have at least learned
- 39:17the layout of your apartment in the time that you've been holed
- 39:20up there. Or have you been too busy
- 39:22looking for your twinkle lights? Yeah it kind of makes you wonder
- 39:26like what kind of dad he was before things.
- 39:28Yeah, I like it. Just it feels like Hannah is far
- 39:31more self reliant pre zombie apocalypse, you know what I
- 39:35mean? Like.
- 39:38OK, well, but I still do. I I still do love how protective
- 39:43he is of her and how much of he wants to build a family with all
- 39:46of them. Yeah, I like that dynamic too.
- 39:48I'm not trying to shit on Frank. I'm just saying like the
- 39:51absurdity of their apartment and then I let into a whole other
- 39:54discussion, but. Yeah, some of my other things is
- 40:00the use of Dutch angles in this movie.
- 40:03Like I'd say, about like 40% of this movie shot diagonally like
- 40:08Crooked. Yeah, they they love them.
- 40:10Some Dutch angles in this. It was 2002, and that was edgy.
- 40:14Yeah, I was like, hey, we got a camcorder like that's.
- 40:17Tilted. Dude, Yeah.
- 40:19Can't do this with film. And the other thing that I was
- 40:26like, what, how the fuck is this happening is when they're
- 40:29driving through the tunnel and Frank with this guy was like,
- 40:32yeah, don't worry, I'm gonna drive over all of these cars and
- 40:35then he just like ramps up over every single car.
- 40:38This would have made. 10 times more sense if it was Jim
- 40:41driving, because Jim seems to lack the kind of impulse control
- 40:44because he's like, what, 19 maybe?
- 40:47I have no idea. He's.
- 40:48Young. Yeah.
- 40:49And like he still has like that My prefrontal cortex has not
- 40:53fully developed energy about him and he's like, if he was like,
- 40:59I'm just gonna floor it. I would believe that from Jim,
- 41:02but I don't believe it from Frank.
- 41:03With the way he's behaved so far, I don't know, man.
- 41:06Like, maybe he's like one of those crazy taxi, you know?
- 41:12You know, that's also possible if that is, if that was his cab,
- 41:14like yeah, he's like he's a cab. Driver like that done some.
- 41:18Like that Uber driver we had that, like, tried to run
- 41:21somebody off the road. Yeah, that we had to report.
- 41:24Yeah, exactly. Like he's been around London.
- 41:28He's driven over a couple of cars, you know what I mean?
- 41:30Like he knows what he's Rd. raged hard.
- 41:33I think it would make more sense if it were, you know, well, not
- 41:36that type of vehicle that they have.
- 41:37Like an actual like like a Hummer type thing or like a Jeep
- 41:40like something that is meant for off roading.
- 41:43Yeah. I don't think it makes it worse.
- 41:45Your tire blew out. You're lucky only one tire blew
- 41:47out. Yeah, right.
- 41:48Well, and here's the thing, too, is because my American brain, at
- 41:52first I thought it was Jim driving because he's sitting in
- 41:55the passenger seat. And I was like, yeah, this
- 41:57track's like. And then I was like, Oh no,
- 41:58Frank's doing, Frank's doing this.
- 42:02OK, So what do you rate this thing out of 10?
- 42:06I'd say it's a solid nine. I think I'm right there with you
- 42:089/9 for me all. Right.
- 42:13Chaos. So we start off with news
- 42:12footage of. Yeah.
- 42:16And then we see that this chimp is strapped to a table.
- 42:20And that's sad. I feel so bad for him, man.
- 42:23It's just it's not fair that this chimp has to watch all of
- 42:27this shit, even if it has the RAGE virus.
- 42:30I don't even know if this chimp has the RAGE virus.
- 42:32Yeah, it I like. I'm trying to understand the
- 42:35logic here. This chimp doesn't seem angry.
- 42:37I think that they're like, why are these chimps mad?
- 42:40Like, let's show this one. Yeah, have.
- 42:42They been Have they been watching too much news?
- 42:45Is this? Is news causing the virus?
- 42:48That's why they cut off all the broadcasts, cuz they're like it
- 42:51might be news. Yeah, we're not sure.
- 42:52Could be news. So people in.
- 42:56Ski masks. Or as they say over the
- 42:58Balakavas, I know that because of our.
- 43:02Team monkeys. Yeah, but our team monkeys?
- 43:06We're talking about monkeys, All right?
- 43:07It's all related. Yeah, I'll turn around and it
- 43:10becomes even more related when you see how Killian Murphy
- 43:13dresses later after. He leaves his parents.
- 43:15House Alex Turner. Very inspired by that era.
- 43:20So yeah, they're like and they're taking pictures of them.
- 43:23I get the impression that this is like a They're like.
- 43:26An activist group? Yeah, they're trying to free the
- 43:30chimpanzees. They're not doing it the El
- 43:32Woods way and going through government legislature.
- 43:36Well, they may not be Harvard qualified or Oxford qualified
- 43:41over there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:44I don't know why school was over there.
- 43:45I'm sorry. I'm sure, I'm sure Elwood's has
- 43:48connections in London. All they had to do was I'd call
- 43:51her up and she'd be like, yeah, no, I would totally help you
- 43:53with this. What year did legally Bland come
- 43:55out? This is 2002.
- 43:58Could they have been going on and tackling the same issue at
- 44:01the same time? Let me see Legally Blonde Two.
- 44:03It's Legally Blonde Two that she stops animal testing.
- 44:07OK, 2003. Maybe.
- 44:10She was inspired by this movie. Well, I think it's kind of
- 44:13interesting because their whole speculations like, yeah, this is
- 44:16contained to like, England over here.
- 44:18I don't think it's going anywhere else.
- 44:20Like where if she, like, saw the news over there, she said.
- 44:22Oh my God, the chimps are so angry.
- 44:24All right, I gotta help. I.
- 44:27When they said it's just contained here, all for all I
- 44:30could think of was the end of Zombie Two.
- 44:33Like, it does actually make its way back to New York.
- 44:36Yeah. Although I think that they're
- 44:38right. Because in 28 weeks later, I
- 44:39think like everything's all contained.
- 44:41Like, yeah. They yeah, they are trying to
- 44:43free the chimps and this scientist comes in, sees them,
- 44:47calls security, and they're like, you can't let them go.
- 44:50They're all infected with Rage. Which sounds stupid, like if
- 44:54that's not like a commonly known virus, like they're infected
- 44:56with rage. Which one of the masked people
- 44:58would be? Like so are we.
- 45:01But they're not listening. They released one of the monkeys
- 45:04from. And the guy was even like it's
- 45:06contagious. It's in their saliva, all it
- 45:08takes is 1 bite and you're done. And you know what?
- 45:11Even if these chimps were infected with rage like they are
- 45:14animals that have been. Kept in less than ideal
- 45:18conditions is entirely likely one would have attacked them.
- 45:22We just talked about this not that long ago with.
- 45:25Gordy, I was just thinking about Nope man.
- 45:27Like that was a trained chimp and it just went off the rails
- 45:31and doesn't even have rage fires.
- 45:32Just fucked a lot of people up. Yeah, so this chimp, he runs
- 45:36out, he bites this woman and within less than 30 seconds
- 45:40she's infected. She infects her other people.
- 45:42She's like vomiting blood everywhere.
- 45:44Like that's apparently like symptom #1.
- 45:47Like you get you get really angry and start vomiting blood.
- 45:50That sounds metal as fuck, but she attacks the lab code dude,
- 45:56and then we assume everybody else there gets like, attacked
- 45:59and infected. Yeah, and then 28 days later,
- 46:03dot dot dot or, if you're my notes, 28 day later.
- 46:07So 28 days later, we're greeted by a Dong.
- 46:12Yeah, listen, here's the thing, is that you are actually naked
- 46:16during surgery and things do happen to your body.
- 46:18And when you're coming out of anesthesia, you're like, whoa,
- 46:21what the fuck is happening to me?
- 46:23Well, he was in the coma. Like do you think that he was
- 46:25already like post surgery or like in the middle of surgery
- 46:28they fucked out of there? He, it looks like his skull is
- 46:31like, sewn back up. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:34And he's like, yeah, you could see where he was shaved a
- 46:37little. Bit so like why would he still
- 46:38be naked? Wouldn't they like dress him
- 46:39then once it's done? I guess it would depend on like
- 46:42when it came, like when everything happened.
- 46:45Because, like, I know after my surgery is like I've had various
- 46:49levels of things still stuck to me that have given me pause of
- 46:52like, how did this get on me because I had a gown tied up
- 46:58like. Did they ungound me like I'm
- 47:02glad I don't remember. But I guess you do have more
- 47:06experience with surgery out of the two.
- 47:08Yeah, like that's the weird thing.
- 47:09Like coming out of anesthesia is just like taking into account
- 47:12how different your body is now. And one of them is the fact that
- 47:14somebody's definitely touched your nipple.
- 47:16Like, yeah, uh huh. Well, he it's gotta be super
- 47:21disorienting for him because he woke up.
- 47:22He's naked. He's like, why am I naked?
- 47:24And then he starts. He puts on scrubs, which I guess
- 47:27that's like the only quotes he could.
- 47:29Find. Yeah, that's probably what was
- 47:30available to him. And it sucks cuz those are paper
- 47:32scrubs. They're not even good, like
- 47:33heavy scrubs. So it's just a bunch of shots of
- 47:37him walking around and empty Wandin and it's some of the most
- 47:41effective shots out there. It's so fucking good.
- 47:44And he did have like, his wits about him when he saw the
- 47:47vending machine open to put some stuff in a bag to carry with
- 47:51them. Very smart, yeah.
- 47:52Or a product placement in this movie, by the way, I guess is
- 47:55how they got. That explains a lot.
- 47:57Whenever they're like, yeah, we couldn't afford to make this
- 47:59movie like, OK, just like product placement.
- 48:01I'm Danny Boyle. Like I'll get your Pepsi in
- 48:03there or whatever else he wants and.
- 48:06I mean, it never feels super forced like, well, except for
- 48:09when she's like rummaging through her back, she's like,
- 48:11well, I've got Pepsi. Yeah.
- 48:14Wing. But Kelly's like, Nah, I don't
- 48:17want. That like, it's like the Britney
- 48:18Spears like. Yeah, As he's exploring, he
- 48:22finds an article that I don't. You don't really get to see what
- 48:27all it's about, but in big text it says evacuation.
- 48:30Yeah, so like you assume everybody's evacuated from the
- 48:32city now? Yeah.
- 48:33And at some point, he finds like a message board where people
- 48:36are, like trying to reconnect with their family members or
- 48:38they're just saying like, like a memorial message to their family
- 48:41members. That's so unsettling to see
- 48:44that. 1. And yeah, like this is just
- 48:48where the music is, just like amping up.
- 48:51The farther he goes into the city and the more empty it is.
- 48:55And then he gets to this church, and this church is all of the
- 49:03parishioners are in the pews and it looks like maybe a Jonestown
- 49:10situation. That's what my brain went to
- 49:13like OK, so they all like end as and I we're gonna drink the
- 49:17kool-aid. Don't have to deal with it.
- 49:18I. Bet you're right.
- 49:19That's what I thought. No, they start waking up.
- 49:22Some of them do, yeah. Some of them start waking up.
- 49:25So were they praying? Maybe they're just still
- 49:30spiritual. You know, I don't know.
- 49:34Like, I'm not saying that. But I mean, or if they were like
- 49:38if there is like a shred of humanity left in them.
- 49:40Exactly like God. I'm so angry.
- 49:42I need to pray like I need God to get this.
- 49:43Anger out of me right now. Yeah, but he like, yeah, he
- 49:47like, says hello and then they all just shoot up and just like,
- 49:50stare at him and you can tell he's like, I fucked up.
- 49:53I interrupted prayer. And this is where the priest,
- 49:57like, bangs down the door. And that's scary for a minute
- 50:01because like, you can almost see on Jim's face.
- 50:03He's like. Do I answer the door?
- 50:05Cuz like like I don't live here. This is like one of the scenes
- 50:11that stuck with me as a kid. Cuz I remember like watching
- 50:14this for the first time. This freaked me the fuck out.
- 50:16And also, I forget what it is that he says to the preacher,
- 50:20but like, it's foul language and he's like, I shouldn't have said
- 50:26that. Yeah, no, it was like whenever
- 50:28he hit him. OK, shouldn't have done that.
- 50:30Yeah cuz he's like, it was like father, father, what's up?
- 50:33And then Father's like just runs over to him and he takes his bag
- 50:38of shit that he stored and smacks him over the head with it
- 50:41and he's like, ah fuck, I shouldn't have hit a priest.
- 50:43Yeah, so he goes running out and he's being chased by several of
- 50:47these zombies, or infected as they're called in this movies
- 50:50universe. And he's saved by a friendly.
- 50:53Portal oh man. Yeah, Molotov cocktails.
- 50:58Yeah, raining upon these infected and.
- 51:00He's like what? And they're just like.
- 51:02Get in here. And he's like, what them it?
- 51:04Is yeah. And they explode a gas station
- 51:07and then take him into, like, a little grocery shop with a metal
- 51:10grate, which is a smart, like a hideout.
- 51:13Yeah, it is. It's like, yeah, and apparently
- 51:16they actually blew up that gas station.
- 51:19Really. Yeah.
- 51:20And apparently they I was reading.
- 51:22This and that's Oppenheimer was born.
- 51:25I was reading that like some of the authorities didn't really
- 51:29know either, so they sent like fire trucks over there to get
- 51:32it. But I was like, we're making a
- 51:33movie, Zombies. Zombie.
- 51:36Yeah, although I think this is. I think this is the first, and I
- 51:40could be wrong, but I think this is the first movie to show
- 51:43zombies being fast. And I think he said that the
- 51:48reason he came up with that idea Garland was whenever he said he
- 51:52was playing Resident Evil, he's like, yeah, the only fear was
- 51:55zombies is like, do I have enough ammunition?
- 51:58Like I can run away from them? Yeah.
- 51:59And he's like, what if they're as fast as the dogs in the?
- 52:02Game yeah. And then those fucking dogs,
- 52:05man. Cuz like, I mean that.
- 52:06Just especially, I imagine, if you like, up until this point,
- 52:10if you've watched several zombie movies and you just see them all
- 52:13really slow and suddenly they're running at you in this janky
- 52:16fashion. Yeah, like that's scary.
- 52:19Well, and so this idea further gets extrapolate, extrapolated
- 52:24upon by Stephen King and his book Cell, where people are
- 52:27infected by like a virus that comes through like the cell
- 52:30phone signal. Oh really?
- 52:32Yeah. And like, not only are the
- 52:34zombies fast, but they can learn, but like, human levels of
- 52:38learn. So it's not just like, you know,
- 52:40like they learn by animal instincts.
- 52:43Like they actually are able to, like, learn and organize
- 52:46together. And that's like, yeah, that's a
- 52:48Romero thing too. I think it's the land of the
- 52:50dead where they start using guns and stuff.
- 52:52Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 52:54I like that too. I like having smart zombies.
- 52:56Yeah. So yeah, they they make it to,
- 53:00they're a little hideout. And then that's where Mark gives
- 53:03the opening joke that Jesse gave at the beginning of this
- 53:06episode. He like takes Jim, not reacting
- 53:09as him being humorless and not like he has no clue what just
- 53:13fucking happened, like chased by terrifying zombies that were on
- 53:17fire. Meanwhile, people in gas masks
- 53:19come and, like, escort you to somewhere else.
- 53:23Yeah, it's just so unsettling and jarring.
- 53:25So Jim tells them that he has no clue what is going on.
- 53:28He was a bike Courier and he got hit by a car about a month or so
- 53:34ago and roughly 28. Days ago, yeah.
- 53:37And he woke up in the hospital to this, so he's a little
- 53:43confused, so. He's Jim.
- 53:47They're Mark and Selena. And they start explaining that
- 53:50like, everything started off just kind of like rioting.
- 53:53But it felt weird because it was even happening in like smaller
- 53:55towns, which doesn't normally happen.
- 53:58And then they realized it was like an infection, and it's
- 54:01either in the blood or the blood itself, something like that.
- 54:05But it was too late to evacuate. Once they realized what was
- 54:08going on, the army had put up blockades, but those blockades
- 54:12got overrun. Supposedly they heard reports
- 54:16that had reached Paris in New York before the TV's and radios
- 54:20were shut off. And there's no government, no
- 54:24police, no army. And they say Jim is the first
- 54:29uninfected person they've seen in six days.
- 54:32Their families are both dead and Jim's like, well, I need to go
- 54:35check on my parents. And they're like, your parents
- 54:36are for sure dead. And he was like, well, I need to
- 54:39check and I'm going to leave right now.
- 54:41And they're like, OK, well, first rule of Zombieland.
- 54:44Is that you don't travel alone unless you absolutely have to.
- 54:48Second rule of Zombieland is that you don't travel in the
- 54:51middle of the night unless you absolutely have to.
- 54:53So how everything is like ends with unless you have to?
- 54:56Yeah, like, yeah, they're like, don't don't be.
- 54:59I think they're kind of worried about him, like being too
- 55:02literal with them, explaining the rules.
- 55:03They're like he looks maybe like he's dumb, like, so yeah, like,
- 55:09you know, if you are alone and a zombie comes out, you can run
- 55:12like it's OK. The next day they agree to go to
- 55:15Jim's parents house. Like there's no, there's not
- 55:18like the typical scene of them like being like no, there's no
- 55:20point in doing this. We need to do what I like.
- 55:22They don't really have plans anyway.
- 55:25Like they're just kind of surviving.
- 55:27So, OK, cool. Let him.
- 55:29Let him get some closure on what happened to his parents.
- 55:33Yeah, I mean, what's the alternative?
- 55:35Hang out in like a subway story the entire time, you know what I
- 55:38mean? Yeah.
- 55:40So yeah, they wait until the next day and then they start
- 55:42walking over there and they arrive at the house.
- 55:44And as you go in there, Jim goes to check everything.
- 55:47Everything looks peaceful in there, like it looks still set
- 55:51up and it doesn't look like chaos has happened, but they all
- 55:54start covering their noses and you know something bad has
- 55:57happened. So he goes upstairs, opens the
- 56:01door into their bedroom and finds them laying on the bed,
- 56:04dead together. Heart wrenching moment because
- 56:09they took sleeping pills and Dayquil and wine, like all the
- 56:13good stuff they had in their hands together and they fell
- 56:17asleep holding each other and holding a picture of Jim and Oh
- 56:20my God, I wanna cry just saying that.
- 56:22Yeah, and like you flipped the picture over on the back and
- 56:26it's just like a message saying like.
- 56:28We left you in sleep and now we join you.
- 56:31Or something like that. They must legitimately believe
- 56:35that like. The rest of the hospital was
- 56:37empty. They must have been told that
- 56:38the hospital was completely evacuated and like you would
- 56:43just assume so. Like, yeah, especially after so
- 56:45much time. Yeah, but it's kind of strange
- 56:50though that they still wrote the letter.
- 56:52Like if they thought that he was dead, but I guess like it.
- 56:55Might have been like a closure for them because clearly they
- 56:57didn't see his dead body. Yes, you know what I mean.
- 56:59Like him coming here is closure for himself.
- 57:01Them doing that was like their form of closure.
- 57:04It's sad, man. So they all decide, well,
- 57:08there's no use in going anywhere else right now, so they decide
- 57:11that they're going to stay at the house for the night.
- 57:13Well, and here's the thing too is that Jim is like, he is
- 57:16completely distraught and these new people who are strangers to
- 57:20him really are doing their best to try and comfort him and
- 57:23they're like, well, they went out peacefully and.
- 57:26Gyms like absolutely not. If they felt the need to kill
- 57:29themselves. This is not peaceful and they're
- 57:32like Mark tells this story of how his family tried to escape
- 57:36to get a plane but 20,000 other people have the same idea and
- 57:40the crowd surged and. Some infected were in there and
- 57:44it just spread through the crowd.
- 57:45And he said he couldn't find his mom or his sister, but he saw
- 57:48his dad's face. And yeah, just like climbing
- 57:50over top of like cords of people, which they gave me
- 57:54imagery of train to Pisan or Pisan.
- 57:56Oh my God, where there's like waves of infected zombies.
- 58:01That movie tears me up every time.
- 58:04The ending of that also kind of reminds me of this where if they
- 58:07went with the original ending with, yeah.
- 58:09Yeah. Yeah, actually, except that
- 58:12hopefully the army was better in that movie.
- 58:15They realized they can't get back to the shop before dark, so
- 58:19they're just gonna stay there that night.
- 58:20They're all gonna stay in the living room because it feels
- 58:23safer that way. Like, kind of like it.
- 58:25Unspoken. We're not all going upstairs
- 58:27with the. Bodies, Yeah.
- 58:30So, Jim. Can't sleep?
- 58:32Yeah. Jim's been asleep for a month
- 58:34and he just found out his parents are dead, so he's he's a
- 58:37little restless. I like how they did this right
- 58:39here. So, like, I thought he was
- 58:40watching home videos of his parents.
- 58:42But really what's happening is he's just having a delusion
- 58:45where he is just hanging out with them in the kitchen.
- 58:48I think he's having a memory like cuz he saw like a coupon
- 58:51for an orange juice or something on the fridge.
- 58:54And he's like thinking back to his mom buying that orange juice
- 58:57and him drinking it straight from the carton and his dad
- 58:59asking for some. And so you think he was living
- 59:02with his parents, right? Or do you think he had his own
- 59:05place? I think he.
- 59:06Like, had maybe just recently moved out or something like
- 59:09that, because Selena the next day asked if he has any clothes
- 59:13there. OK, kind of implying maybe he
- 59:15doesn't, but he's still young enough that I could see him,
- 59:17like, regularly being there. Yeah, and clearly he lives in
- 59:20the area and like if he's that young and hasn't moved all this
- 59:23stuff out. I mean, shit, I was just talking
- 59:24about my Spice World VHS possibly still being at my mom's
- 59:28like, so it it seems reason of like, I mean, it wouldn't be
- 59:34unreasonable for him to still be living with them, but I get the
- 59:37impression he just recently maybe struck out on his own.
- 59:40Yeah, he's that age where it's indiguous.
- 59:43Yeah, either way. So he's having that and then he
- 59:45lights a candle and by doing so he gets the attention of some of
- 59:49the infected outside and they just burst through the window
- 59:52and attack him. Yes, it's Mr. Bridgers and his
- 59:56daughter Selena, and Mark immediately jumped to action.
- 1:00:01Jim is just in shock. And he's just like, that was Mr.
- 1:00:05Bridgers And she's like, have you been bitten?
- 1:00:08And he's like, and that was his daughter.
- 1:00:10She's like, have you been bitten?
- 1:00:12And he's like, no, I'm just covered in somebody else's
- 1:00:14blood. And then she looks over at Mark,
- 1:00:17and Mark has like this deer in the headlights look and he's
- 1:00:20like holding his arm as every single person in every zombie
- 1:00:23movie ever that's been bitten and is trying to hide the fact
- 1:00:26that they've been bitten does. I couldn't tell if he's been
- 1:00:28bitten. See all you have to do.
- 1:00:30You just have to have their blood get in like any area,
- 1:00:35yeah, like some sort of open wound or mucous membrane.
- 1:00:38Yeah, exactly. And like maybe it went into that
- 1:00:41and. He he's like, no, I'm, I'm fine,
- 1:00:44I'm fine. And she doesn't buy it.
- 1:00:45She immediately she sees the cut and then immediately starts
- 1:00:48hacking at him with her machete. Yeah, and he was like, weren't
- 1:00:52you guys like mates? And she was like, you have 10 to
- 1:00:5720 seconds when somebody becomes infected.
- 1:00:59If I think that you're infected, I wouldn't hesitate.
- 1:01:02I'd do it in a heartbeat. Exactly, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:01:05Like she had that doubt and she's like, alright, I gotta act
- 1:01:07on it. I think he was infected, like
- 1:01:10you. Said but I.
- 1:01:10I still think like the fact that she asked.
- 1:01:13So like you're in that position where you have to make that type
- 1:01:15of rash decision like 20 seconds.
- 1:01:17It's like not a lot of time to make A to determine if
- 1:01:20somebody's infected, You know what I mean?
- 1:01:22Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's it's definitely a split SEC, split
- 1:01:25second call. Yeah.
- 1:01:27This is where don't travel in dark unless you have to.
- 1:01:30Comes up because she tells him to go get changed and they've
- 1:01:33got to leave because once one infected shows up, more come.
- 1:01:38So as they're walking, Selena says that she saw in Mark's face
- 1:01:43that he knew. And she's like, you've just got
- 1:01:46to kill somebody when they're infected.
- 1:01:48And then they see string lights up on the balcony of an
- 1:01:51apartment or flat. And it's like flashing.
- 1:01:56Yeah, I thought it was somebody just turning the lights on and
- 1:01:58off for like a signal. But it's just Christmas lights
- 1:02:01that are blinking constantly. Yeah, I have to imagine that
- 1:02:03they're like battery powered because they're saying, like
- 1:02:06they've said that there's no more electricity.
- 1:02:08So yeah, which like we have battery powered string lights so
- 1:02:11it doesn't seem unreasonable. Yeah.
- 1:02:15So they just had to go investigate it and then they
- 1:02:18make it over there. They get part way up the stairs
- 1:02:21and Jim is like, hey, I need a break And she looks annoyed to
- 1:02:25which I shouted at the screen. He just got out of a 28 day
- 1:02:29coma. Selena, this has been a really
- 1:02:32bad day. He just learned he's an orphan.
- 1:02:35Selena, calm down. Plus, like even after.
- 1:02:39Even 28 days is probably enough for your muscles like atrophy.
- 1:02:43Absolutely, absolutely. And she's like, well, you have
- 1:02:46no fat on your bones, you've only had sugar.
- 1:02:48And unfortunately all I have to give you is more sugar, but it's
- 1:02:51better than nothing. So this is where we get.
- 1:02:54The Pepsi or I think he's like, can I get, can I get mango?
- 1:02:59It was something tango. TT I think it's something very
- 1:03:03European, I thought. It was like Fonta, you know?
- 1:03:05I was like, no, I don't want a Fonta.
- 1:03:11So they noticed that some of the infected have caught up to them
- 1:03:15and are chasing them up the stairs now.
- 1:03:21For. So they start running up to the
- 1:03:18top, and then they're greeting. Me.
- 1:03:21Yeah, she's gonna leave. Like, yeah, she was fully ready
- 1:03:24too. Yeah, she's not making
- 1:03:25attachments, but they make it up to the top of the stairs and
- 1:03:27there's a man in riot gear and he lets them by and then takes
- 1:03:31on the rest of the zombies. And I like this.
- 1:03:34Shot of him knocking them off of the stairwell and it's just
- 1:03:38falling through the center. Yeah, and it's like banging up
- 1:03:41against the rails. It's so cool.
- 1:03:43I love that shot. And then he like.
- 1:03:46He makes it in. He tells Hannah, his daughter,
- 1:03:48to let them in, and he gets there because she's like,
- 1:03:51Selena's like, please let us in, please let us in.
- 1:03:53And she's like, where's Dad? Yeah.
- 1:03:54And then, like, as soon as he gets in, he immediately
- 1:03:57switches, like from riot mode into dad mode.
- 1:03:59Yeah, yeah. He's like, oh, celebrate.
- 1:04:01We've got new friends. What?
- 1:04:03What do we have? And she's like, Mom's coming to
- 1:04:05month and he's like, all right, where are the glasses?
- 1:04:09And she's like middle covered. And he's like, no, the good
- 1:04:12glasses. It's a celebration top cover.
- 1:04:18So yeah, they they all toast. Jim dry shaves and he does it
- 1:04:24with the worst possible technique.
- 1:04:27Because if you're going to go against the grain, you don't go
- 1:04:29against Granger in a dry shave. You don't do that.
- 1:04:31Of course you're going to be covered in little scratches.
- 1:04:34That's what happens when you're a dumb 19 year old who just came
- 1:04:36out of a 28 day comb and woke up in a zombie apocalypse.
- 1:04:39Like, I'll cut him some slack, but.
- 1:04:41Well, we were talking about this when we were watching this
- 1:04:43yesterday and like. Apocalypse, man.
- 1:04:45I'm just fucking going for it. Like I'm growing it out.
- 1:04:48Yeah, we saw how much his beard grew after 28 days.
- 1:04:51Like, it's not like he's like, got a full beard, you know what
- 1:04:54I mean? Yeah, it's like he's not Robin
- 1:04:55Williams in Jumanji. Yeah, like it.
- 1:04:57They looked like it. Somebody that, like, trims it
- 1:04:59regularly, like, yeah, but they were like, we gotta let Killian
- 1:05:03Murphy's cheekbones shine. Can't cover those babies up.
- 1:05:08Yeah. He's cuts himself and I love
- 1:05:11this thing where like Frank comes over there to talk to him.
- 1:05:15And are like figuring out sleeping arrangements.
- 1:05:17And while that's happening, he's just got, like, blood running
- 1:05:19down the space from where he, like, cut himself.
- 1:05:21Yeah, he's like you and Selena can take the spare room and
- 1:05:25Jim's like, ah, it's not like that.
- 1:05:27I'll stay in the living room and Frank's like, OK, like.
- 1:05:30I was like, oh, like, are you judging them, man?
- 1:05:33Like, he was like, Selena's really pretty and she's pretty
- 1:05:38furious like she's. Like, got a Really.
- 1:05:40She's a catch? Yeah.
- 1:05:41Like, why aren't you with her? Well I just saw her like murder
- 1:05:45somebody like 5 minutes ago. He's like we've we've had a a
- 1:05:50spree of getting to know you and it's been a rough spree.
- 1:05:53It's. Been a little jinky?
- 1:05:55Yeah. So he also cuts his hair while
- 1:05:57he's in there. It's not really specified how he
- 1:05:59manages to do that. Yeah.
- 1:06:02How did you? No, I don't even want to.
- 1:06:04Do they have a battery operated razor maybe 'cause that's the
- 1:06:07only thing that I could think of is like a four guard.
- 1:06:10On your fucking face, dude. Come on, we've already
- 1:06:13established she's kind of a dumb kid.
- 1:06:15I. Could see this being one of
- 1:06:16those situations where he, like shaved his face with that and
- 1:06:19then like he looks down and sees that after the fact it's like,
- 1:06:22ah OK, we get like the Curb Your Enthusiasm music.
- 1:06:30Yeah. So yeah, it's like next day
- 1:06:35Frank shows him no, before that, before that, Jim and Selena have
- 1:06:39a quick conversation. Oh, OK And he's like, this could
- 1:06:42be good for us. And she's like, no, they'll slow
- 1:06:44us down. And he's like, it's good to have
- 1:06:46attachments. And she was like, not if they
- 1:06:48slow you down. She was like, I like, we don't
- 1:06:50need this. Why the fuck is she hanging out
- 1:06:53with them then? Because she just she.
- 1:06:59She does need people, but she's not at the point where she's
- 1:07:01ready to admit that. I don't mean I think she could
- 1:07:04do it alone, but I think there's a part of her that she's not
- 1:07:06willing to acknowledge yet that doesn't want to do it alone.
- 1:07:09I see. Also, there's an incredibly sad,
- 1:07:12like repeated shot of this goldfish tank that has like 2
- 1:07:15inches of water and the poor little goldfish are struggling
- 1:07:19for dear life. Hopefully they had like a big
- 1:07:21supply of fish food. I hope so.
- 1:07:24It won't I. Don't want to think about it.
- 1:07:27So Jim sincerely thinks her for saving him, though.
- 1:07:31Yeah. So this is where Jim, like
- 1:07:34Frank, shows Jim how they've been trying to collect water.
- 1:07:37And he's like, go figure, London.
- 1:07:38The first dry streak we've had and ages, 10 days, no rain.
- 1:07:42He's got all of the buckets because he was like at first we
- 1:07:46thought maybe we could survive from the water and other flats,
- 1:07:48you know, going into the cisterns, you know, whatever,
- 1:07:52and it just hasn't been enough. Isn't it crazy that like, out of
- 1:07:56all of the apartments in this building, because it's a giant
- 1:08:00building, that they're the only ones there?
- 1:08:02It it is kind of but. Either way, that's not
- 1:08:05important. So yeah, he even tried to do the
- 1:08:08thing where you can collect condensation on a plastic sheet,
- 1:08:10but he couldn't quite figure it out.
- 1:08:12That's somebody that has like Discovery wild on in the
- 1:08:15background and only halfway pays attention.
- 1:08:17Damn, I saw that was like, what did Bear Grylls say again?
- 1:08:21So they're like, we basically like, we can't stay here.
- 1:08:23They have to, we have to go. And then he shows everybody this
- 1:08:29message that he's been hearing on the radio from soldiers.
- 1:08:32It's a recording because it repeats, but it's saying that
- 1:08:36they have like food and water and a cure.
- 1:08:41Yeah, it's like the 42nd blockade in Manchester.
- 1:08:43Yeah, they have, like, the answer to the infected.
- 1:08:46Selena is the only one. She's like, yeah, this is
- 1:08:48bullshit. They're obviously lying, but
- 1:08:49they're like, you know, operating on what a little bit
- 1:08:52of faith that they have left is like, well, yeah, we gotta at
- 1:08:54least try or cuz like otherwise you're just gonna be stuck in
- 1:08:57that building. And then Frank says, and by the
- 1:08:59way, sound carries in our flat. And I understand that we would
- 1:09:03slow you down, but you're correct.
- 1:09:05We do need you, probably more than you need us.
- 1:09:07And Hannah goes, Actually, no, we all need each other and we
- 1:09:10should probably stick together. No, she weren't fast.
- 1:09:12Yeah, so we cut to them leaving in Frank's cab.
- 1:09:17Mmhmm. And it's like a nice little fun
- 1:09:19joyride. I feel like they're kind of
- 1:09:20bonding together here. He has a goofy dad joke moment
- 1:09:23where he's like, I don't accept cash or major credit cards.
- 1:09:27Yeah. I did like that they like left
- 1:09:29the he left leaves the fee or like the tab running the entire
- 1:09:34time. Yeah.
- 1:09:35Well here's the thing too because we watched Zombieland
- 1:09:38this weekend too. We actually watched it before
- 1:09:40watching 28 Days Later and you there's so many similarities in
- 1:09:44this because then bonding in the car, we get that in Zombieland
- 1:09:48also and the shopping scene we also.
- 1:09:50Get Yeah, like, yeah, it's true. A lot of that stuff does kind of
- 1:09:53like parallel. So as they're driving, they make
- 1:09:58it to a tunnel. And when you have it, if you are
- 1:10:01in a zombie apocalypse, let me just give some good life advice
- 1:10:05for everybody. Now, if you are in a zombie
- 1:10:07apocalypse, you don't go through a tunnel unless you have to.
- 1:10:10Unless you have to. So they get into the tunnel and
- 1:10:13they see that it is just filled with all kinds of cars.
- 1:10:17People have tried driving over top of cars and have felled
- 1:10:21miserably, but Frank's like not today.
- 1:10:23I've got a cab. It's like I'm hitting the Nitro,
- 1:10:25he. Fucking guns it.
- 1:10:27And boy, do they ramp up over top of those cars and they're
- 1:10:29having a great time. They're laughing.
- 1:10:31They're having fun. Shit must be all-wheel drive,
- 1:10:34right? Like.
- 1:10:35That's gotta be right. I mean, that's what I was saying
- 1:10:37looking at the vehicle, it doesn't look like the type of.
- 1:10:39Vehicle at the vehicle that does that strike me as the type who
- 1:10:41probably got like regular tune ups on his cab?
- 1:10:44Oh, I mean, yeah, he's probably the best cab driver in all of
- 1:10:47London. So he five star rating on Uber.
- 1:10:50I would hope so. I think that he might be one of
- 1:10:53those types that would be against Uber.
- 1:10:55He's like, they're fucking destroying my business.
- 1:10:57Or it would be like in that Nathan for You episode where he
- 1:10:59just eventually like converts to being an Uber driver.
- 1:11:04Ohh yeah, maybe I don't want that to happen to Frank.
- 1:11:07Though poor Frank. It's a better fate than what he
- 1:11:10gets in this movie, Travis. That's fine.
- 1:11:12That's fine. So they make it over to the top.
- 1:11:15And as they make it over there, they blow out a tire.
- 1:11:17So they get out to go replace the tire.
- 1:11:20Hannah is the one that's doing all of the main work here.
- 1:11:23She's the one that's actually like putting the tire on and
- 1:11:25like bolting it back up. Frank and the other Frank's
- 1:11:28holding it up, I think. Like with the Jack and also like
- 1:11:30with his hands for some reason. Jim is on lookout duty, so he's
- 1:11:35just watching for shadows to come across the back of the
- 1:11:37tunnel. I don't know what Selena is
- 1:11:39doing here. I think she's still probably in
- 1:11:41the car. No.
- 1:11:42I like. I like to imagine she's also
- 1:11:44helping hold up the car. Maybe.
- 1:11:45OK, I didn't really see any shots of fear, yeah, but they
- 1:11:48start to notice. Shadows of zombies running down.
- 1:11:51Yeah, they first get attacked by rats.
- 1:11:54Yeah, rats first. Poor fucking Hannah, man.
- 1:11:57She got the worst. Yeah, cuz she's under the car
- 1:11:59and the rats are running over her face.
- 1:12:01She handles it a hell I love a lot better than I would.
- 1:12:04There was a teeny tiny spider in the shower earlier and I
- 1:12:07screamed. Yeah, to the point that you ran
- 1:12:10in to make sure I was OK. It was like a scary scream.
- 1:12:13It was shit something that the corner of the shower is shampoo
- 1:12:16in my hair. There's a.
- 1:12:17Spider. But they managed to get it
- 1:12:22changed out in time and they drive out like yes, the in fact
- 1:12:25it arrived. It's man these people.
- 1:12:28If they if it wasn't a total zombie apocalypse, they could be
- 1:12:32like a pit crew for NASCAR like. Yeah, it's a tense scene.
- 1:12:37Also something I forgot to mention before, but they hired
- 1:12:40like athletes to be the zombies in this because they wanted to
- 1:12:44make sense. Yeah, have them actually be able
- 1:12:46to like run fast, but also have that editing to where they can
- 1:12:48make it look weird. So.
- 1:12:50Yeah. OK, so they make it out having
- 1:12:53fun again. They stop at a store, Budgens
- 1:12:57that. I don't know if there's a chain
- 1:12:58over there, but it's a Budgens. They get all the food and Selena
- 1:13:03and Hannah have a cute little bonding moment talking about
- 1:13:06chocolate and they're giggling and enjoying each other.
- 1:13:09And Jim, because he's a dumb fucking 19 year old, just grabs
- 1:13:13the cheapest bottle of whiskey because.
- 1:13:15That's why he's used to getting he's a bike career.
- 1:13:18He gets like the $8 bottle of like straight rubbing alcohol.
- 1:13:24And Frank's like, we're not paying for this.
- 1:13:28Like you can get the good stuff like.
- 1:13:30Like going into the taste like you know you want this right
- 1:13:32here. It's like, deep.
- 1:13:32And he's that pushy salesman at, like, a boutique liquor store.
- 1:13:36And you're like, oh God, I'm not sophisticated enough for you.
- 1:13:38Yeah. I don't.
- 1:13:39I don't really care about the like, what's the level of fucked
- 1:13:42up I can? Get on this thing right here.
- 1:13:43That's all I need to know. I like it too.
- 1:13:45I also like how like we have our own thing over here about what
- 1:13:49we call. Shopping carts, as the technical
- 1:13:51term, I like to call them buggies.
- 1:13:53From where? That's the thing.
- 1:13:54From my area. What do you call them?
- 1:13:57Shopping. They call them shopping trolleys
- 1:14:00over there, which I think is funny.
- 1:14:02I'm gonna start calling them trolley.
- 1:14:03Every time you say buggy, I'm gonna call it a trolley.
- 1:14:05I'm totally OK. They call it a trolley.
- 1:14:07A buggy trolley? No.
- 1:14:10A troggy buggy. Buggy.
- 1:14:15But yeah, it's like a nice little.
- 1:14:18It's a nice moment. They're like building, Yeah, a
- 1:14:20relationship they just have. And it's also kind of almost a
- 1:14:23normal moment. Like, not quite, because they've
- 1:14:26got free reign of getting whatever they want in the store,
- 1:14:31but they also have to, like, not get things that need to be
- 1:14:34cooked or with nearby expiration dates.
- 1:14:38So they have, like, they're just having a moment where they can
- 1:14:40relax, yeah, for a single second.
- 1:14:42And that can't be overlooked in terms of like their mental
- 1:14:46health and this. And you want to know what's even
- 1:14:48weirder about this? Because this is like a happy
- 1:14:50scene when they film this. This is the day that 911
- 1:14:53happened. Oh my God.
- 1:14:55Yeah, So they had to, like, act all cheerful and like having a
- 1:14:58good time while like a disaster was happening.
- 1:15:02In terms of their acting, I could see like kids, the
- 1:15:06characters would have this moment of reprieve while also
- 1:15:09being kind of tense. Yeah, yeah, I can see that.
- 1:15:12Yeah. You can see like the reality of
- 1:15:14like a terrible situation still being there.
- 1:15:18So they I was just an added little bit of fun that somebody
- 1:15:23did, probably did on a whim. They left a credit card.
- 1:15:25I like that. Yeah.
- 1:15:26Yeah, that was funny. He's like, yeah, we're not gonna
- 1:15:28be needing cash anymore. So they stop at a gas station
- 1:15:33and what they're actually gonna do is saving gas from the gas.
- 1:15:37Truck. Yeah, like the truck that, like,
- 1:15:40transports the actual gasoline. We're just the smart way to do
- 1:15:44it because you need electricity for the gas pumps to work.
- 1:15:47I learned that from reading the stand.
- 1:15:48Unless you get like, I think that they still have manual
- 1:15:51pumps out there somewhere, especially in like rural areas,
- 1:15:54it's possible. Yeah, well, either way.
- 1:15:56So Frank is the one that's doing that.
- 1:15:59Meanwhile, Jim decides to go investigate the actual sort
- 1:16:02because they got burger signs and he's like, I I want burgers.
- 1:16:06Yeah, well, he's just like, annoyed with Selena, always
- 1:16:08telling him what to do, and she's annoyed with him acting
- 1:16:13like an impulsive teenager. So, um, yeah.
- 1:16:19He goes inside this store and it very much feels like a rural gas
- 1:16:24station, slash mom and pop diner.
- 1:16:27Like it's gotten very much that feel.
- 1:16:29I'm glad that they have them over in the UK as well.
- 1:16:32Yeah, for sure. Um, and he just sees heaps of
- 1:16:35dead people, including a dead Babby, and that's.
- 1:16:39Oh my God, that's so upsetting, seeing that it's like a mother
- 1:16:42holding the baby, too. Yeah, that one's rough.
- 1:16:45And these are, like, not dead. Like the parishioners in the
- 1:16:48church were not dead. Like these are actually, like,
- 1:16:51dead just. Yesterday of.
- 1:16:52I don't think they ever had a chance to rage.
- 1:16:56Yeah. And Jim gets attacked by a small
- 1:16:58boy and he meets him. Did he know that that kid was
- 1:17:01there? No, I don't think so.
- 1:17:04Because, well, because he's just like, he gives out like a
- 1:17:06gentle, like hello. And as soon as he does that, the
- 1:17:10kid approaches from behind and it's almost like he's expecting
- 1:17:13it. Like, he like, in a very cool
- 1:17:15way. Like stylistically, just like
- 1:17:16turns around and brands the kid and she's like, boom.
- 1:17:19And then when he walks out, Selena asks what he saw, and
- 1:17:23she's like nothing. So they I.
- 1:17:27Like this moment, too, where like after Frank Stone sophoning
- 1:17:30the gas, Hannah's behind was like, all right, Hannah, come
- 1:17:33on, bring it over. She like, floors it and like,
- 1:17:36right before she gets to them, just like breaks and just skids
- 1:17:39right next to him. She's having fun.
- 1:17:40I like seeing that They definitely Hannah and Jim give
- 1:17:44me like sibling energy, like where she's like 15 and he's 19
- 1:17:48or 20. Like they feed off of each other
- 1:17:51with that. Like, 'cause I feel like part of
- 1:17:53that is like him being there and her getting a little goofy with
- 1:17:56him. Yeah, like they're both being
- 1:17:58kind of reckless together. Yeah.
- 1:18:00Yeah. So they stopped for a picnic at
- 1:18:03some ruins in the middle of a field, and it actually looks
- 1:18:06really pretty. Yeah, it looks really nice.
- 1:18:09I wonder where this was. They see horses running.
- 1:18:12Selena's like warming up to people.
- 1:18:15Like, like as they were. Watching the horses, like, I
- 1:18:18think it was like Frank or somebody was like, do you think
- 1:18:20they're infected? I'm like.
- 1:18:21Do those horses look Mads? Usually like they.
- 1:18:23Look like they're having a great.
- 1:18:26Like that's happy horses, Yeah. Yeah, they smooch.
- 1:18:29Selena kisses Jim's cheek. They're gonna stay there for the
- 1:18:34night. But everybody is kind of tense
- 1:18:36because they're outdoors and exposed.
- 1:18:40But like a flame? Yeah, that's weird.
- 1:18:42I don't understand why they made that decision.
- 1:18:44At least, like if you're gonna, if you have no option but to
- 1:18:47stay there for the night, sleep in the fucking.
- 1:18:48That's what I was thinking. Sleep in the car.
- 1:18:50Like like you don't. I guess I understand like things
- 1:18:54are like maybe a little bit normal, like they're in an area
- 1:18:57that isn't very populated so they have more faith.
- 1:19:00But still, like, I would not feel safe doing that.
- 1:19:04I can't believe Selena was OK with this.
- 1:19:06Yeah, right. And they're like, how has she
- 1:19:09managed to be asleep? And Jim's like, Selena voiced
- 1:19:13her up and she's so annoyed because, like, she's ready.
- 1:19:18Like, to fight. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:20And then she's just learning that Jim's asking how she
- 1:19:22managed to fall asleep, which is a jerk move in and of itself.
- 1:19:25And she goes, I was a pharmacist, chemist.
- 1:19:31I have a Valium prescription here.
- 1:19:33You can take one. You're fine.
- 1:19:34And so she, like, gives out these pills to everybody.
- 1:19:38And Hannah's gonna take one. And Frank's like, not you,
- 1:19:40Hannah. She's like, please, Dad, I can't
- 1:19:42sleep. And they eventually talk to him
- 1:19:44into letting her have half a tablet, which I don't know how
- 1:19:47you managed to do that because those look like quick release,
- 1:19:49which are usually powder inside of a capsule.
- 1:19:51But I don't know I. Don't know.
- 1:19:53Yeah. So we get one of Jim's bad
- 1:19:58dreams here. Like of him waking up and he's
- 1:20:00all wounds. Goats.
- 1:20:02Yeah, goats. Bad nightmare about goats.
- 1:20:05Bad nightmare. Yeah, and then he's waking, or
- 1:20:11he's woken up by Frank. Yeah, Frank does what we do for
- 1:20:14Talia. When she's barking, she'll
- 1:20:16sometimes bark in her sleep and she gets like her little.
- 1:20:18Like her Hackles raised. Yeah, yeah, you get a little
- 1:20:21sleep Mohawk. Yeah, so we have to, like, wake
- 1:20:23her. Up.
- 1:20:23Or if he had a Mohawk, yeah. We have to, like, wake her up.
- 1:20:27And we're like, it's OK to eat. She, like, looks at us and
- 1:20:29she's, like, all, like, disoriented.
- 1:20:32And she lays back down and falls back asleep.
- 1:20:34And that's what Jim does. He goes, yeah, thanks, Dad.
- 1:20:36And, like, falls back asleep. And Frank looks absolutely
- 1:20:40heartbroken at that. But also like, OK, well, I guess
- 1:20:42we are all family now. Like I like that.
- 1:20:45It's. Dynamic he's he's become the
- 1:20:47father and it's cool. Um, the next morning he actually
- 1:20:51does wake up alone. Everybody else is ready to go in
- 1:20:53the car and you could tell they planned out this place.
- 1:20:56Yeah, they were all so excited to see him fanning.
- 1:20:59Yeah, so they all would back up and get back on the road.
- 1:21:02Uh, so now they're driving down the highway and they get a
- 1:21:05glimpse of what Manchester looks like.
- 1:21:07Fire. Golfing flames as Ricky would.
- 1:21:10Say. It's just straight up like
- 1:21:12engulfed entirely, and then you see an explosion in the distance
- 1:21:15to like shit's not good there. They get to the 42nd blockade
- 1:21:21and it looks like it's really empty.
- 1:21:22However, it also looks like there have been recent fires and
- 1:21:25recent meals cooked. So it's a little bit confusing,
- 1:21:29but they're very disheartened. They figure, you know, the
- 1:21:33people, they're either left or were killed or infected.
- 1:21:37Frank this, But you could tell that this was Frank's breaking
- 1:21:42point. Like to see it deserted here,
- 1:21:44he. Is snapping at everybody and he
- 1:21:47like goes off for a minute and he sees a crow picking at a dead
- 1:21:54body. I got a question.
- 1:21:56How the fuck did that body get all the way up there?
- 1:21:59You know, that's a good question.
- 1:22:00They pro carried it up there like it's it's like impelled on
- 1:22:05a post that's like 20 feet up. My best guess is that like he
- 1:22:10was the the person. Formerly of the body was
- 1:22:14climbing on like one of the structures nearby and fell like
- 1:22:18in an attempt to like flee an infected.
- 1:22:21Or maybe he like climbed all the way up there and like the crow
- 1:22:24was raging and they just. Like packed him.
- 1:22:26To death up there. Either way, Frank says that this
- 1:22:29is disrespectful to a corpse and he tries to shoot the crow away.
- 1:22:32The crow said no, I'm hungry. And so he goes, and he shoots
- 1:22:36the crow, and then, like a dum dum, looks straight up.
- 1:22:41At the body and we get this really cool shot.
- 1:22:45Yeah, from the POV of the droplet of blood.
- 1:22:48Yo, that blood was that had vision.
- 1:22:51It was going right for his eye. And it goes into his eye.
- 1:22:56Yeah. And he's like, Hannah.
- 1:22:59Hannah, I love you. I'm sorry.
- 1:23:00I shouldn't have yelled. I love you.
- 1:23:01Get away. And she's like, wait, what?
- 1:23:05And Selena picks up really quickly.
- 1:23:07What's happening? Comes bear hugs.
- 1:23:10Hannah from behind. Before that though like he has
- 1:23:12like a little bit of pre rage where he like he gets big with
- 1:23:16her. I'm big now.
- 1:23:16Get away from. Me, like raps her and.
- 1:23:18Shoves her away. It's like, dude, like, you're
- 1:23:20not even infected yet. But I get it.
- 1:23:22You're just trying to make her scared, like, go away.
- 1:23:25Or maybe like maybe it comes on like, I mean it comes out
- 1:23:29quickly, but like maybe it's in stages like.
- 1:23:31It ramps up, yeah. And Selena shouting at Jim to
- 1:23:36kill him. And Jim is like conflicted
- 1:23:40because he doesn't have the same detachment Selena has at this
- 1:23:42point. And then Frank has shot it just.
- 1:23:46Gets a lit up. Which begs the question, how
- 1:23:50long were those soldiers there? Were they watching this?
- 1:23:53Were they hoping somebody? Would get infected so they could
- 1:23:57shoot? Like what?
- 1:23:58What was their game plan here? Or did they just show up because
- 1:24:00they're like hiding in the woods?
- 1:24:02Yeah, they're like, just like off to the side of the road.
- 1:24:05Yeah, in the grass. Like what?
- 1:24:07What was happening here? I wasn't wondering that too.
- 1:24:09I feel like because they're a bunch of jerks, we find out, but
- 1:24:12at the same time, they still want to get these people.
- 1:24:15I don't think that they're like, I feel like they could.
- 1:24:18They were very clearly not infected.
- 1:24:20So yeah, I don't know what the deal was.
- 1:24:21They must have just arrived or something.
- 1:24:23That's the only thing that makes sense.
- 1:24:25So they take the three survivors to their compound.
- 1:24:31They have hot water so like, you guys can have a shower.
- 1:24:35Looks like you need it. OK, calm the fuck down, Henry.
- 1:24:40Like they've been out there trying to survive.
- 1:24:44We're lucky that Jim shaved his face without doing a full cabin
- 1:24:48fever. You know what I mean?
- 1:24:50Like. I could see that being like, a
- 1:24:52good joke. Like, huh?
- 1:24:53You look like you need a shower. And like, it wasn't like that.
- 1:24:56There's like, yeah, you guys are fucking.
- 1:24:57Stinking. Yeah.
- 1:24:57He's like, you guys smell awful. Yeah.
- 1:25:00Also, we see the, like, soldiers are playing around with their
- 1:25:03car, which just feels a little bit.
- 1:25:06Also disrespectful. It reminded me of that episode
- 1:25:09of Ratchet Jim Stones where Kelvin's looking out the window
- 1:25:12and sees them like driving the motorcycle on his basketball
- 1:25:15court after like he had his thumbs broken.
- 1:25:19Yeah, no, it's disrespectful. It's just my friends, we just
- 1:25:21play car pranks. Yeah, just car pranks.
- 1:25:23Just car pranks. Yeah, you get the sense like
- 1:25:27they're having a good time, but at the same time you can tell
- 1:25:29all the shit. These guys are like unhinged and
- 1:25:31power tripping hard. Selena finally has a real
- 1:25:37emotional moment, and she's breaking down.
- 1:25:40And she's just so. Sad for Hannah and sad for
- 1:25:44themselves. And Jim's like, well, we're all
- 1:25:46together and you know, she'll survive.
- 1:25:48You've survived this long. I've survived this long.
- 1:25:50She's like, I don't want Hannah to have to survive.
- 1:25:52Like, she had her dad. She was in a good place with
- 1:25:54having her dad and all this. I don't want this for her.
- 1:25:58Yeah. And then she, Jim, kisses her
- 1:26:01and she, like, kisses him back, but then she runs out.
- 1:26:03She was like, this isn't the right time.
- 1:26:04I didn't. But also, I think you're hot.
- 1:26:06Yeah. Well, I didn't understand what
- 1:26:08happened like. That confused me.
- 1:26:11I couldn't tell if I missed something.
- 1:26:13It was like an emotional moment, but it was also a moment that
- 1:26:16she didn't want to go any further with it, you know?
- 1:26:18Like she was just like, I just, I need to go.
- 1:26:19I feel too many things right now.
- 1:26:21OK, I gotcha. All right.
- 1:26:23So Jim is talking to General Henry.
- 1:26:26He gets a tour. Whatever, Asshole.
- 1:26:29Henry. Donna wouldn't give him a
- 1:26:31general status that's too high for this guy.
- 1:26:33Like, whatever. It doesn't.
- 1:26:35Even their rank really doesn't even fucking matter at this
- 1:26:37point. There's nine of them.
- 1:26:38Yeah, it is. It's all kind of bullshit at
- 1:26:40this point. So he's giving him a tour in a
- 1:26:44description of all of their lake protections and whatnot and
- 1:26:47their plans to rebuild. They've got the boiler for hot
- 1:26:51water, They've got a kitchen. Jones is very happy to cook,
- 1:26:56like he's on there and he's just.
- 1:26:57Like, he's having a good time. Yeah, he's joining us.
- 1:26:59That was good to see. Like a little bit fun.
- 1:27:01And then he shows him Mailer who was infected 2 days ago and they
- 1:27:05chained him to study. Which study is just code for see
- 1:27:08how long it takes him to starve. But still, like, I get it.
- 1:27:11I mean also it is just kind of interesting It's I I would say
- 1:27:14it's beneficial to like have something like that to be able
- 1:27:16to like understand how it operates.
- 1:27:19You know what I mean? Like, it sucks because it's
- 1:27:21somebody that you knew, but if they're already like too far
- 1:27:24gone, like, at least don't let it be in vain.
- 1:27:27Like you know, they could at least be a sacrifice where you
- 1:27:29can. Understand and like survive
- 1:27:32better. I don't know, like I it sucks.
- 1:27:35It's a shitty situation, but like, yeah.
- 1:27:37So then we have the horror movie trope of an ominous group feast
- 1:27:42for the newcomers. Yeah.
- 1:27:44And it immediately goes wrong because the eggs for the omelet
- 1:27:48are. Off.
- 1:27:50It's like Gordon Ramsay right here.
- 1:27:52These eggs are roaring. And then fucking Henry looks at
- 1:27:58Hannah and says, can you cook? Because he's a misogynist, you
- 1:28:01know? Yeah, like, I'm sorry that nine
- 1:28:03grown men here don't know how to cook.
- 1:28:06Yeah, that sounds like a life skill that you all are lacking.
- 1:28:09How the fuck do you not know how to make eggs, right?
- 1:28:11Come on, man, it's. Like eggs are the easiest.
- 1:28:13Yes, it. Was an omelet.
- 1:28:15To be fair, I've not made many omelets, but like, come on,
- 1:28:17like, cooking an egg is OK Like it's super easy.
- 1:28:20Yeah. We've got Sergeant Farrell who
- 1:28:24believes that this is the return to nature.
- 1:28:27He's the only good soldier there, I think.
- 1:28:31Which obviously means that he's not gonna last very long.
- 1:28:33But I like his commentary here. He's like, yeah.
- 1:28:36So, like, wait, was it him that was saying this or was it that
- 1:28:38marked from before? But it was like like.
- 1:28:42Humanity, like humans, we're we've only been here for like a
- 1:28:45blink of the eye in terms of like real life existence.
- 1:28:47So, like maybe us dying off finally, is it going back to
- 1:28:50normal? Yeah, that's that's fair what
- 1:28:52he's saying. OK, yeah, and I like that.
- 1:28:54That's insightful. It is weird to think about that.
- 1:28:57They're trying to get Hannah to eat and she's like, I don't want
- 1:28:59to eat. I want to go bury my father that
- 1:29:02you guys murdered. They all run out because like an
- 1:29:06alarm goes off and they are infected on ground, so they all
- 1:29:09go and. Use a lot of ammunition to kill
- 1:29:12a couple of the infected. Just a lot of infected.
- 1:29:15I think it was warranted. Yeah, but still, like, these
- 1:29:18people don't believe in preserving ammunition.
- 1:29:20We'll find out later. Like they're just like always.
- 1:29:22That's true, But still, it was cool.
- 1:29:24I like seeing this scene, just seeing them wide up, like a
- 1:29:26whole hoard of zombies. When they come back in, Mitchell
- 1:29:30takes Selena's machete. And this was like, you have me
- 1:29:34to protect you now. She's like, she was ready to run
- 1:29:36out there and help, but she was smart.
- 1:29:38She didn't run out because they were shooting.
- 1:29:40Yeah, want to get caught? Just a classic thing is like,
- 1:29:42hey look, the machete's my cock. Yeah, like and he's basically
- 1:29:45like, I could have some fun with you and she's like you.
- 1:29:48You're really gross. And Jim hits him.
- 1:29:51And then basically later Jim is talking to Henry about killing
- 1:29:57that boy back at the gas station.
- 1:29:59And this is where Henry said that eight days ago he found
- 1:30:04Jones with his gun as a mouth, ready to shoot himself and.
- 1:30:08Just basically saying that he saw no future.
- 1:30:09So that's when he moved all of his men from the blockade to
- 1:30:13here and promised them women. Yeah, he's like because.
- 1:30:19Women mean future. So like, what'd you come here
- 1:30:21for? It's like like, well, you know,
- 1:30:24for the, the answer to the infection, it's like the answer
- 1:30:28is starting new again. So women.
- 1:30:32Like. And Jim without hesitation.
- 1:30:35Runs out of the room to try and get Selena in Canada, but
- 1:30:38they're already got their paws all over them and basically Jim
- 1:30:43and Farrell because Farrell's trying to help him too, They get
- 1:30:46chained up to radiators. Yep.
- 1:30:49And then immediately escorted out into the wilderness, where
- 1:30:52they've obviously done this to a few other people.
- 1:30:56Yep. Which makes me wonder, how many
- 1:30:57soldiers were there before. Yeah, and also.
- 1:31:00We're not many, like, people that are right from the
- 1:31:02broadcast just like that didn't really meet their standards or
- 1:31:05is just dudes like, OK, this isn't gonna do us any good.
- 1:31:08So we just take him out there and kill him.
- 1:31:09Yeah, so it seems like Jones maybe is like having a crisis of
- 1:31:14conscience and he's not sure what he needs to do.
- 1:31:17And the end result is that Ferrell dies and Jim escapes.
- 1:31:21He shoots Ferrell and then clips Mitch also.
- 1:31:24Which, like I'm on your fucking team.
- 1:31:26Friendly fire. Come on, man.
- 1:31:28But this gives Jim an opportunity to run away.
- 1:31:30And he's smart. He throws his shirt over the
- 1:31:33barricade so it looks like he escaped over it.
- 1:31:36And Mitchell and Jones are like, what?
- 1:31:38We can just say that, like he escaped, Like we don't have to
- 1:31:40worry about it because he's out there.
- 1:31:42He's not going to make it back down.
- 1:31:43He's fucked. He's by himself.
- 1:31:45So the soldiers are really gross.
- 1:31:48I don't want to talk about this scene in too much detail, but I
- 1:31:51do want to say that at one point Selena convinces them to leave
- 1:31:54the room, saying it's only polite.
- 1:31:57And she is doing the only thing she can in this moment, which is
- 1:32:00to give Hannah some sedatives to make it at least not as bad as
- 1:32:05it could be. She's like, I'm not sleepy right
- 1:32:07now. She's like, this isn't the make
- 1:32:08you sleep, this is the make you just not care.
- 1:32:10Which that's so sad. It it is so incredibly fucked
- 1:32:13up. And again, it's one of those
- 1:32:14split second decisions because everything has happened so fast.
- 1:32:17And I think if it was like a situation where they were tied
- 1:32:20up in a room, Selena would have come up with a better plan.
- 1:32:22But right now she's like, OK. The meds kicking fast for Hannah
- 1:32:26because she's like, I'm certain to fill it, and she's starting
- 1:32:28to speak her mind to the soldiers there.
- 1:32:30Yeah, like, yeah. So, like, what happened to those
- 1:32:32guys out there? I think they're they're dead.
- 1:32:34Yeah, they're dead. They're totally dead.
- 1:32:36Yeah, because half the soldiers had to leave because the alarms
- 1:32:39go off and Jones is like, no, he went over the fence and Henry's
- 1:32:43like, Oh my God, you guys are idiots.
- 1:32:45So he is out there with them. Pretty much all of the soldiers
- 1:32:48that go out there die, except for Henry.
- 1:32:51It's so crazy, man. Like Jim suddenly becomes a
- 1:32:53fucking mercenary and is able to, like, take on this whole
- 1:32:56army. Which, like, I don't know.
- 1:32:59I don't know how this is intended, and I hope that this
- 1:33:01doesn't sound mean, but like they've got like, this typical
- 1:33:06action hero, like same in the day, shirtless in the rain,
- 1:33:10kicking ass, taking names. Except it's like. 120 pound
- 1:33:15Killian Murphy like. Totally scrawny, dude.
- 1:33:19All of like the bones in his shoulder and collar bones like.
- 1:33:23My boy doesn't have fat. My boy doesn't have muscle.
- 1:33:26He's just all skin and bones. But this right here, this is
- 1:33:29strategy over strength. Yeah, he's.
- 1:33:33Just out maneuvering them. He's smart and he's not arrogant
- 1:33:36about being smart. And that's the thing, is that
- 1:33:39Henry is hubris. That's what gets him.
- 1:33:41Hubris always gets you, man. So, like, he's taking out enough
- 1:33:44of the people there to, like, get one of the guns and he makes
- 1:33:47it back to the compound. And he shoots mailers leash
- 1:33:51free. Yep.
- 1:33:51Just change it to say. Leash.
- 1:33:53But that's basically what it is. It's around with necks.
- 1:33:55It's. Like a change on.
- 1:33:56Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he ground pounded the
- 1:33:59post, basically. Yeah, so yeah, Mailer's just
- 1:34:02like, on which this is a bold fucking move.
- 1:34:04I was wondering about this when he did that.
- 1:34:06But like, you're also putting Hannah and Selena at big danger.
- 1:34:10I think it was again split second.
- 1:34:14What's the best thing to do in this moment?
- 1:34:17I think he was trusted that Selena and Hannah could handle
- 1:34:20themselves. He did not know that Hannah was
- 1:34:23high off her ass like to the point she didn't expect that cuz
- 1:34:27when he goes in and he looks for Hannah 1st and I think that even
- 1:34:30says that like he has more faith than Selena to be able.
- 1:34:33Cuz Selena saved his ass so many times he's like I don't need to
- 1:34:36save. Selena.
- 1:34:36Yeah, Selena. She can probably take care of
- 1:34:38herself. But also, Hannah's just younger.
- 1:34:39You want to, like, help the younger people first too?
- 1:34:42Yeah, and he eventually is able to find Hannah and he just.
- 1:34:45He kills Mitchell and Mitchell's not infected.
- 1:34:48He's just like, hey, you suck and you don't need to exist.
- 1:34:52Yeah, he's just like takes like a he's got like a knife from
- 1:34:54Machete or something. Yeah, he's taking care of
- 1:35:04everybody that Jim can't get to. He's just straight up stabbing
- 1:34:56him. Yeah, he's going full commando
- 1:34:58here. Also, Mailer is like going on a
- 1:35:00fucking rampage in there and killing a shit ton of.
- 1:35:06Yeah, and then he makes it. Jim makes it into a room while
- 1:35:09being chased by Mailer and. Or no.
- 1:35:12Miller's infected some of the other people there.
- 1:35:14So there's like multiple people infected.
- 1:35:16Yeah. And there's like a guy, there's
- 1:35:18like, I'm out of ammo. And then he's just like, yeah,
- 1:35:21he. Just leaves him alone in the
- 1:35:22room. Why would the guy just follow
- 1:35:24him? Right?
- 1:35:25Like he's like, are you gonna help?
- 1:35:26And Jim's. Like, what the fuck am I
- 1:35:28supposed to do for you? You're out of ammo.
- 1:35:29Let's fucking go, dude. Get out the window.
- 1:35:31Here I don't. Know your call if you wanna stay
- 1:35:33there. Like I'm not gonna tell you how
- 1:35:34to save yourself. I don't like you guys.
- 1:35:36You guys are the enemy. Yeah.
- 1:35:38So yeah, eventually, yeah, Jay is safe.
- 1:35:41They're all dead except for Jim, Selena and Hannah.
- 1:35:45And Jim has this. Well, we'll get to him.
- 1:35:48Yeah. So Jim and Selena, they have
- 1:35:51their kiss moment and I wrote this.
- 1:35:53This and Frank's death are the two things that I remember the
- 1:35:55most from the last time I watched this.
- 1:35:57Cuz Hannah comes in, she smacks Jim over the top of the head.
- 1:36:01Which by the way. There was a moment where Selena
- 1:36:03was worried that maybe Jim was infected, and she hesitated.
- 1:36:06And he goes, that was more than a heartbeat.
- 1:36:07Then they kiss, and then Hannah comes in, smacks Jim over top of
- 1:36:11the head, and he's like, what was?
- 1:36:12That for? And she was like, I thought you
- 1:36:14were biting her. And they both laughed.
- 1:36:17We're not like, not biting. OK, cool.
- 1:36:19This bottle over my head had no effect on.
- 1:36:22Me. Great.
- 1:36:22All right. Good to you, Jim.
- 1:36:24You're. Doing I'm not already recovering
- 1:36:26from a brain injury, Hannah. You got the good side.
- 1:36:31I'm not. That's where they operate.
- 1:36:33I got a metal plate there. So they start to go out to find
- 1:36:40their car and get out of there. But as they get there, W is
- 1:36:44sitting in the back seat. Yep, and he's holding the gun to
- 1:36:47them. And he shoots.
- 1:36:49Jim and he makes Hannah drive. But you know what Hannah does?
- 1:36:53She drives right to Miller. Right to Miller.
- 1:36:56Let's Miller get him. Fucking a Hannah.
- 1:37:00Good for you. Yeah, she's back from before she
- 1:37:04knew what she was doing with the drive and and Mailer just
- 1:37:07reaches right in through the rear view mirror or no
- 1:37:10windshield. Rear windshield.
- 1:37:12Yeah, there you go. We go out there.
- 1:37:14Yeah, we go, yeah, that's candy man shit going through the
- 1:37:16mirror. Yeah.
- 1:37:17And then he like pulls W out and then the rest of them get in the
- 1:37:20car and they drive off. Yeah.
- 1:37:22And like we see these quick flat, like it says 28 days later
- 1:37:25and we see these quick flashes. Like don't die, Jim.
- 1:37:28And like, boom boom saving him. Now we're in a farmhouse.
- 1:37:32It says hell on the hill. And then Jim's waking up.
- 1:37:40Presumably naked in the bed again, but this time he's got a
- 1:37:43blanket over his lien. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:46So you know, things are good. Yeah, and like, he looks up, he
- 1:37:49goes, not the curtains and I'm like, what?
- 1:37:53So he goes out there and Selena's sewing something with
- 1:37:57like a hand run sewing machine, which I think is kind of cool.
- 1:38:02Yeah, it would be kind of a pain for when you need two hands to
- 1:38:05move stuff through, but. So Hannah runs in and she goes,
- 1:38:09they're coming And they're like, Are you sure?
- 1:38:10And they're like, I can hear it. So they all go running out with
- 1:38:13this thing and it's an oh, And they spilled out Hello.
- 1:38:16And this plane comes overhead and they're like, waving their
- 1:38:19arms. And Selena said, do you think
- 1:38:20they saw us this time? Yeah.
- 1:38:22And, like, we see shots, like as the plane's going overhead, we
- 1:38:24see some of the infected are starving to death.
- 1:38:26Yeah. So it turns out it takes, what,
- 1:38:2928 days for? 28 + 28. 56. 56 days is how long
- 1:38:37it takes for them to start okay. So yeah, and you assume that
- 1:38:43they are rescued by people that can fly jets.
- 1:38:46Hopefully they're not, like, fucked up people too.
- 1:38:48Yeah, right. You never know.
- 1:38:51But there is an alternate ending.
- 1:38:53It's. Technically it's listed as two
- 1:38:55alternate endings in our DVD, but like, it's.
- 1:38:57Basically the the 2nd one's like an extended version of the 1st.
- 1:39:01One, yeah. So it's it shows them taking Jim
- 1:39:04to the hospital and him not surviving.
- 1:39:08Yeah, they're trying to treat his wounds.
- 1:39:09Been they can't. He dies and they just walk out
- 1:39:12the door and the ends. Yeah.
- 1:39:14And then the next one is Selena is still.
- 1:39:16Sewing ending, but without Jim. Instead of talking to Jim, she's
- 1:39:20talking to a chicken. Yeah, and.
- 1:39:23Yeah. And she's like, whoa, yeah.
- 1:39:25She says you're gonna have to start breeding soon, and for a
- 1:39:28second it's like. Whoa.
- 1:39:30Hannah or not Hannah? Selena, did you take the wrong
- 1:39:32message from that last experience?
- 1:39:34But no, it's. Just a It's talking to the Yeah,
- 1:39:36yeah, talking to the Hench. I know how to make eggs.
- 1:39:38It's like, we need more chickens.
- 1:39:39Yeah, we need more. Come on.
- 1:39:41Yeah, not Jones. Yeah.
- 1:39:43So I like, here's the thing, I like that in that ending, Selena
- 1:39:47and Hannah still like, are their own family together.
- 1:39:50They're still surviving. Yeah.
- 1:39:54I don't think that they need Jim to survive because multiple
- 1:39:58times he's been saved by both of them.
- 1:39:59Yeah. I do like having a slightly
- 1:40:04hopeful ending. So many zombie movies, and on
- 1:40:06such a bummer note, like I could think of several off the top of
- 1:40:09my head. And like, I just I I like that
- 1:40:12we at least get a glimmer of hope in this one.
- 1:40:14That's another way it kind of subverts the other zombie movie
- 1:40:17tropes. I feel like this something about
- 1:40:20the way that this zombie movie is, is like it feels more bleak
- 1:40:23than the others because like. Watching other zombie movies, I
- 1:40:27don't know if I'm just fucked up, but like, I have fun because
- 1:40:30it's just like fun seeing that, you know what I mean?
- 1:40:32But like watching this one, I hear, I just feel dread.
- 1:40:34They're not, like, decomposed. You know what I mean?
- 1:40:37There's there's like people, and they're clearly like, you know,
- 1:40:41they're infected with the virus, but like, they're not
- 1:40:43decomposing. It's not like all of the crazy
- 1:40:46makeup that you associate with the zombie.
- 1:40:47It's just red contacts. Yeah, yeah, I feel like, yeah,
- 1:40:50you can. Which that reminds me, they
- 1:40:52actually did have to hire an optometrist to get people like.
- 1:40:55Great contacts for this. Glad that they did like correct
- 1:40:59fitting because ihealth is super fucking important.
- 1:41:02Mmhmm Um, like it. I'm glad that they got well
- 1:41:06fitted contacts for everybody. Yeah, it's not all productions
- 1:41:10do that. Yeah, they were.
- 1:41:11Have a million. Used wisely like we can't afford
- 1:41:14an ending, but goddamn it, we got you all some good contacts.
- 1:41:17I wonder if they were able to take advantage of, um, universal
- 1:41:21healthcare over there in the UK for it.
- 1:41:23Could be, yeah. OK, So what do you rated?
- 1:41:27After talking about it, I'm gonna keep it at a nine.
- 1:41:30I feel like a nine feels appropriate.
- 1:41:32It definitely has its its flaws where I think maybe, like I
- 1:41:36could have subverted a few more of the tropes and it could have
- 1:41:39been a little bit shorter. But ultimately I still it is
- 1:41:42super effective in what it's doing and I just it it it's one
- 1:41:46of those that sticks in your crawl for a little while, you
- 1:41:48know. Yeah, that's my thing with this
- 1:41:49one. Like it's generic script wise,
- 1:41:52but like the way that it's told and visually and everything
- 1:41:55else, it just clicks in a different way.
- 1:41:57For me, I feel like it's more impactful than most zombie
- 1:42:00movies. I always say this all the time
- 1:42:02that like a movie doesn't have to be completely unique to be
- 1:42:05enjoyable. Yeah, it just has to be told in
- 1:42:08an interesting way, yeah. There's like, there's only so
- 1:42:11many stories in the world. That's what I was gonna say.
- 1:42:12Like, at this point, like there's no original story
- 1:42:14anymore. Like every story is pretty much
- 1:42:16been told. It's just different variations
- 1:42:18of, yeah, same shit. And this one told that story in
- 1:42:21a very entertaining and a way that actually makes you look at
- 1:42:27life in a different way. You know, I guess maybe it's
- 1:42:31also just one of those things like you were saying at the
- 1:42:32beginning, where after the pandemic, we kind of see this in
- 1:42:36a whole different light. Yeah, it's just weird.
- 1:42:41But I think I'll keep mine at 9, too.
- 1:42:43OK, Talia, at the very beginning, like, right as we hit
- 1:42:47play, let out a loud snort. Yeah.
- 1:42:51And then at the very first infected attack, the one where
- 1:42:55Jim's in the church, she started growling.
- 1:42:58And then she was watching for pretty much the rest of it until
- 1:43:01they get to the compound. And then she started playing
- 1:43:03with her squeaky toys. Yeah, although at the end, and
- 1:43:07it was just today when we were watching the alternate endings,
- 1:43:09but whenever. Selena was sewing.
- 1:43:12That got her attention. Yeah, like well, and I mean, she
- 1:43:15knows the sound of a sewing machine, but my sewing machine's
- 1:43:17been broken. Finally dropped it off to get it
- 1:43:19repaired after trying about a dozen times to fix it myself.
- 1:43:23So I'm getting it back soon. But she's probably like I
- 1:43:25haven't heard that sound in such a long time.
- 1:43:28You got to fix fast. Wow.
- 1:43:29So I think Ty's going to give it an 8.
- 1:43:32OK, just point off. For all the animal deaths, we
- 1:43:35don't see any dogs but. The chimps at the beginning,
- 1:43:38Yeah, yeah, it's not good. I'm glad we don't see any dogs
- 1:43:42in this movie. I know I didn't need that.
- 1:43:44Yeah, Zoe, honestly, she really didn't watch this, which was
- 1:43:48surprising because there were multiple explosions.
- 1:43:50I know. But it was Scout, though, Yeah.
- 1:43:53I was going to say I actually want to talk about Scout because
- 1:43:55she was very invested in this movie.
- 1:43:57So she was just like kind of walking through the living room
- 1:44:02and she stopped to groom herself, you know, as cats do.
- 1:44:06And it was right when Mr. Bridgers attacks at Jim's
- 1:44:09parents house and she jumped and then she, like got up on the
- 1:44:13couch and watched it. Yeah, for the rest of the movie
- 1:44:16it. Was so crazy to see because
- 1:44:18whenever I saw her jump, it freaked her out.
- 1:44:20But then after that, she's like, I want to see the rest.
- 1:44:22Of this? Oh wow.
- 1:44:23OK, this is a good movie right now.
- 1:44:24I'm invested. Yeah, this is scary.
- 1:44:26It actually hit her in a level like that.
- 1:44:29It was cool to see that. I like.
- 1:44:31I like watching our pets when they actually are focusing on
- 1:44:33the TV, like, whoa. Cuz like also there's a lot of
- 1:44:36like fast visuals and I know like, yeah, she likes that a lot
- 1:44:39too. Cuz the zombies are super fast
- 1:44:40and janky, Well and like, I mean, we brought up Train to be
- 1:44:44San earlier, but that's one that we can't.
- 1:44:47Like. Talia is emotionally wrecked
- 1:44:49whenever it's playing because even though it's in Korean, like
- 1:44:53you understand a small child crying.
- 1:44:56Daddy, Daddy, no. And like Talia, I don't know if
- 1:45:00dogs can cry, but it looks like she cries every time.
- 1:45:03That's on. We all do, yeah.
- 1:45:07It's just so sad. It's it's awful.
- 1:45:10OK. Well, who did you relate to?
- 1:45:17Probably relate to Jim honestly. Like I wanna relate to Selena
- 1:45:20cuz she's a badass. But truthfully, if I know
- 1:45:23myself, I don't know if I could be that much of A badass but I
- 1:45:26feel like I'd do my best. Yeah, which I think is what Jim
- 1:45:29does. I think I'd relate to Frank
- 1:45:32because I like taking that, like that dad role.
- 1:45:36I liked that, like it was nice. And seeing Jim with like the.
- 1:45:41Drinks there. Like I know that he bored Jim
- 1:45:43like as he was telling Jim like you know you want to get this
- 1:45:45right here this is the IT tastes like this and it's really like
- 1:45:47Jim just walked away. But like I would do that too.
- 1:45:49I'd be like come on man. Like, let me tell you why you
- 1:45:53want to get this. All the more reason that I
- 1:45:55relate to Jim, because that's you expecting like 4K, like,
- 1:45:58yeah. Bio visual stuff to me.
- 1:45:59Like, yeah. It comes from a loving place,
- 1:46:02but like also in a situation like this, I feel like I would
- 1:46:05want to like have that. You can tell that he likes
- 1:46:08having that family dynamic there, Absolutely.
- 1:46:10And I would kind of want to if I could find family like that.
- 1:46:14If I didn't have any, I would totally do that.
- 1:46:16And, you know, he totally supported the relationship
- 1:46:18between Jim and Selena. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:46:20Like if he had survived, he would be like.
- 1:46:22Yeah, like a ruin for you from the very beginning.
- 1:46:24I was so, so heartbroken whenever you said you guys
- 1:46:26weren't together. All right, We already got our
- 1:46:31tagline. Yeah.
- 1:46:32So do you want to reiterate what the tagline is?
- 1:46:37It gets more and more like Donald Duck every time.
- 1:46:43I don't know. I'm trying to.
- 1:46:45That's a horse. This is the rage horse right
- 1:46:46there. You gotta shake your head.
- 1:46:52You just. Look at the motor boating.
- 1:46:55Spitting everywhere OK, dream sequel though we can theorize.
- 1:47:02I know that this has an actual sequel, but like, how would you
- 1:47:04want to go with it? The next one has Jeremy Renner
- 1:47:07in it and I'm a Gene Poots imaging imaging.
- 1:47:10Poots imaging Poots, imaging Poots, I would like to see, I
- 1:47:18wanna see them find out like that.
- 1:47:20Farrell's theory that like they just quarantined the island.
- 1:47:24I want them to see that that was actually true and them dealing
- 1:47:28with the fallout of that and like them having to basically
- 1:47:30take refugee status elsewhere and kind of deal with like just
- 1:47:34go from like the the comment, the political commentary via
- 1:47:38zombie just to political commentary, you know what I
- 1:47:41mean? OK.
- 1:47:42I I think that would be interesting because then they're
- 1:47:44finding like a different kind of enemy and they can't just, you
- 1:47:46know, throw a machete at it. I feel like people would hate
- 1:47:48that. Absolutely, because it's just.
- 1:47:50You're taking the zombies out of here, like 28.
- 1:47:53What would you call that? Like 28 constitutional
- 1:47:57amendments later. A 28 constitute.
- 1:48:01OK, well, you know, if you're signing up for that movie, I
- 1:48:03think you know exactly where you're getting.
- 1:48:05Yeah. No, I just like, again, for me,
- 1:48:07like what the zombie movies, it's not about the zombies, it's
- 1:48:11about the survivors. But also the zombies.
- 1:48:14But also the zombies. But like, that's like, I don't
- 1:48:16know. That's not the important part of
- 1:48:18the movie to me. It's not.
- 1:48:19But like I still they, I like having them as like a looming
- 1:48:23fear, like a threat that is always present.
- 1:48:26They're relentless. So it's, you know, it's it's
- 1:48:31just like a different type of sorry, are you saying that the
- 1:48:33government isn't also a looming threat that's always present?
- 1:48:36Yeah, but they're not like and relentless.
- 1:48:38I was gonna say they're not going, but, you know, they kind
- 1:48:41of are too, some of them. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:46You know what? OK, sure.
- 1:48:47Let's get political with it. We got our tag on.
- 1:48:50We already established that so and we already talked about the
- 1:48:54changes we would wanna make. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:48:56So we talked about those right off the top and my changes don't
- 1:48:59haven't changed. No, I agree with pretty much all
- 1:49:02that. So let's go to our Internet
- 1:49:04review. Okay.
- 1:49:05So I pulled one from IMDb and I thought that this one was
- 1:49:09interesting because it's somebody that.
- 1:49:12Had attended a test screening for the movie beforehand.
- 1:49:15Yeah, and they thought that the movie would be different
- 1:49:18afterwards. So when I was in, the Days are
- 1:49:21Numbered for the British Film Industry is the title of the
- 1:49:24review. I first saw this film at a test
- 1:49:26screening about six months ago. I decided not to post a review
- 1:49:29then as I assumed that there was no way the film would be
- 1:49:32released as it was considering the reaction of the test
- 1:49:35audience. However it was.
- 1:49:37The trailer actually makes the film appear to be quite
- 1:49:39promising. The audience is promised a tale
- 1:49:42of virus ravaged UK and one man's ordeal to survive.
- 1:49:46Upon seeing the film, the ordeal is suffered by the audience.
- 1:49:50Who thankfully only have just short of two hours to get
- 1:49:52through. The problems with this film are
- 1:49:54numerous. The script is abysmal and is not
- 1:49:57helped along by the performances of the leads.
- 1:50:00The dull lines are droned out by Murphy in a winch like monotone
- 1:50:04whilst using excellent Christopher Ecclestone delivers
- 1:50:08his lines like he's in the school play.
- 1:50:12Thankfully, single father Frank is performed thoughtfully and
- 1:50:15with warmth. It is a great credit to Gleeson
- 1:50:18that he turns in such a performance when given such a
- 1:50:21disgraceful script to top the lot.
- 1:50:25We are expected to believe that an entire Army unit has a
- 1:50:28managed to do what apparently only four other people have
- 1:50:31achieved by staying alive and B have gone mad.
- 1:50:34Have they gone mad because of the virus?
- 1:50:36No, they've just gone mad. That's it.
- 1:50:39The film looks cheap. Not in a stylish, atmospheric
- 1:50:41way. It just looks cheap.
- 1:50:43To give credit where it's due, the zombie attack scenes are
- 1:50:45reasonably effective. They are powerful and violent
- 1:50:49enough to ramp up tension. But this is this only contrast
- 1:50:53to make the rest of the film feel even lamer.
- 1:50:56Perhaps the most the most heinous crime this film commits
- 1:51:01is that it is excruciatingly boring.
- 1:51:04A number of people at the test screening actually got up and
- 1:51:07left. Considering test screenings are
- 1:51:08free, that goes some way towards explaining just how dull this
- 1:51:12film is. I think I've made my .2 minutes
- 1:51:15of genuinely scary zombie attacks do not constitute A
- 1:51:18sufficient payoff for sitting through what is, in summary, a
- 1:51:21very poor, dull, cheap looking, boring film.
- 1:51:25Avoid like the Rage virus. If you go into this film, it
- 1:51:29will feel like you're leaving it 28 days later, OK?
- 1:51:33I mean, you know, he touched on some of the points we've talked
- 1:51:36about where it's kind of an expected way that it goes maybe
- 1:51:40a little bit unrealistic, maybe not.
- 1:51:42I don't know. I think sometimes people
- 1:51:43overestimate their abilities for how they'd handle a zombie
- 1:51:47apocalypse. I think so too, yeah.
- 1:51:51I don't know. I I think the acting now, I
- 1:51:55enjoy the acting honestly. I feel like it was real, like it
- 1:51:57was, yeah. Around the performances, I
- 1:51:59didn't think that anybody stood out with any bad delivery of
- 1:52:02anything. I liked everybody in this.
- 1:52:05Yeah. I think maybe Hannah suffered
- 1:52:07sometimes because she didn't have a whole lot to say.
- 1:52:09Most of the time she didn't get a ton of lines to deliver,
- 1:52:12That's true. Yeah.
- 1:52:14But yeah, I fully believe like Jim and Selena's growth
- 1:52:18throughout it. Yeah, I mean, that's like the
- 1:52:21that's one of the stories being. Told Dennis.
- 1:52:24And again, I guess it's like it's one of those things.
- 1:52:26What do you go into a zombie movie looking for?
- 1:52:29I'm a person. I don't go in looking for
- 1:52:31zombies. I'm looking for the story around
- 1:52:34the zombies. And even if it's a story I've
- 1:52:35seen before, if it's told, well I will take it and that's what I
- 1:52:40get from this. But I guess if you're going into
- 1:52:42it for just a straight up zombie movie, it might be a little bit
- 1:52:44slow on the pacing. Yeah, I mean, I actually really
- 1:52:47understand where this person's coming from.
- 1:52:49Yeah, like they that was a well thought out review, I thought.
- 1:52:52And I from the sounds of it, they saw the trailer and I'm
- 1:52:58assuming the trailer used a lot of those shots of him walking
- 1:53:01throughout London, where it's like bare.
- 1:53:03Oh yeah, no, that definitely catches people's attention.
- 1:53:05Yeah, And he was expecting a lot more of that.
- 1:53:07But like, I don't know, like an entire movie that I don't know
- 1:53:10how you can capture that energy for the entire film.
- 1:53:13Like it does a great job setting the tone, I think.
- 1:53:16But if you're expecting that type of stuff for the next this
- 1:53:21movie, 2 hours. But I guess most other movies
- 1:53:23like an hour and a half. Not super realistic, but I get
- 1:53:28like having your expectations for something and then not
- 1:53:32having it met 1000%. This dude hates The Walking
- 1:53:35Dead. Probably.
- 1:53:36Yeah. Yeah, it was OK.
- 1:53:40Walking Dead's OK, OK? But we do have some listener
- 1:53:44reviews, OK, and these are shorter.
- 1:53:46OK. All right.
- 1:53:49First off, we'll go to Instagram with our boy, Michael Lee
- 1:53:52Howard. Oh boy.
- 1:53:53OK. Says 28 Days Later is a top tier
- 1:53:56level zombie movie. Zombies that run the quick cuts.
- 1:53:59Editing is a bit disorienting at first, but after multiple
- 1:54:02rewatches this one would be my #1 zombie go to.
- 1:54:05The cast is brilliant. You can almost envelope this
- 1:54:07movie with all senses. 10 out of 10, all right.
- 1:54:12Yeah, I I love the fast zombies. I love the running zombies.
- 1:54:16I it adds a new element to it. Yeah, and I like the way that
- 1:54:19they edited the stuff like that to where it's like quick and
- 1:54:23weird. It's I don't think that they
- 1:54:25were going for the disorienting thing.
- 1:54:26I think that they were just going for, like, unnatural
- 1:54:28emotions. Here's the thing too, though, is
- 1:54:30that like Killian Murphy, like, we don't really spend enough
- 1:54:33time thinking about the absolute, like, physical trauma
- 1:54:35he went through right before all of this.
- 1:54:37Maybe this is really what this shit is looking like to him, you
- 1:54:39know what I mean? Like that's.
- 1:54:40True too. Yeah, I didn't.
- 1:54:42Even think about that and he's getting no medical aftercare.
- 1:54:44We don't know at what point, like clearly he got his noggin
- 1:54:47sewed back up before the hospital was deserted.
- 1:54:49But like. Brain damage?
- 1:54:52Yeah, so. Good thing like no therapy
- 1:54:54afterwards, so like, he got absolutely nothing.
- 1:54:56Yeah, yeah, it's true. You know, I didn't even think
- 1:54:59about that. But that's an interesting way
- 1:55:00they like, yeah, we do not talk about it enough with this movie.
- 1:55:02Yeah, because like getting hit in the by a car.
- 1:55:05And obviously taking like, brain damage, Yeah.
- 1:55:08And I'm only saying head trauma and brain damage because half
- 1:55:11his head is shaved when we first see him.
- 1:55:13So he clearly had his head shaved to have brain surgery.
- 1:55:17Yeah, OK Next up, Muse of Magpies, they say.
- 1:55:23Really entertaining and bleak. I saw my first Dong in 28 Days
- 1:55:26later. Nice.
- 1:55:28That's funny. Yeah, I just love how that like
- 1:55:30it. Just where were you when you saw
- 1:55:32your first Dong? This honestly might have been my
- 1:55:34first Dong too. Oh really?
- 1:55:35Yeah. Where were you when first Dong?
- 1:55:3828 Days? No, 28 Days later 28 Days is a
- 1:55:43whole different movie. Is it?
- 1:55:44Yeah, it's a Sandra Bullock movie.
- 1:55:45Where she has to go to rehab is. There any Dong in it?
- 1:55:51Do you have to actually think about it?
- 1:55:52I don't remember. I don't think Sandra Bullock
- 1:55:54does. Don't.
- 1:55:55Think she does. I don't think she does.
- 1:55:57I think that's in her contract, yeah.
- 1:55:58No Dongs. Just me.
- 1:56:01Just like, you know, like make me look good.
- 1:56:03I don't think I've seen a movie where she's like a bad person,
- 1:56:07OK? Over on Twitter, Johnny Hammond
- 1:56:10says. I remembered liking it at the
- 1:56:12time, but it's been so long since I've watched it, I barely
- 1:56:14remember it. Johnny, watch it again.
- 1:56:16If you can, you gotta try hard for it.
- 1:56:18Aquilly boobs. This shit was fucking the game
- 1:56:21changer. Yeah.
- 1:56:22Absolutely love this movie. It's brutal, bleak, but has
- 1:56:24heart when you need it. An awfully accurate, accurate
- 1:56:27vision of what life would be like during a cataclysmic.
- 1:56:32Does say that right? Cataclysmic.
- 1:56:34Cataclysmic pandemic hell. We saw glimpses of this during
- 1:56:37COVID 10 of 10. All right.
- 1:56:40Yeah, that's the thing about we talked a lot about, you know how
- 1:56:43the how people just kind of suck and I don't.
- 1:56:47We have a lot to cover with this maybe.
- 1:56:48And I don't think, I don't know, I'm still, I'm still getting
- 1:56:52over COVID fatigue. But like, yeah, we did see like
- 1:56:55the worst sides of people, yeah, during those couple of years.
- 1:56:59Thankfully it wasn't anything as in since as a RAGE virus,
- 1:57:01because if it were anything like this, we, I don't know if like
- 1:57:04humanity would be around. Absolutely not.
- 1:57:08Absolutely not. I also like then like the
- 1:57:10beginning. They're like, how could it
- 1:57:11fucking travel over over to like New York and stuff like that?
- 1:57:13Like it like it's over here. I'm like, dude, you don't know
- 1:57:16how, like easily shit like that can travel.
- 1:57:18Also, you don't know how easily people just ignore what they're
- 1:57:21told to do. That, yeah.
- 1:57:22But like one person on a plane, like from one country, they get
- 1:57:25on a plane, go to another, or like, knew somebody that like
- 1:57:28may have had contact and then boom, you just got like a whole
- 1:57:31pandemic. Every continent's getting
- 1:57:33infected somehow. And then?
- 1:57:37Next up and last we have Mandy, she says.
- 1:57:40You don't fuck around with rage, zombies and the blood in the eye
- 1:57:43POV. It is one of the most
- 1:57:46devastating scenes ever. God, it really is.
- 1:57:49Those are, like I said, the two scenes I remembered from this
- 1:57:51movie. Frank's death and Hannah
- 1:57:54thinking that kissing was biting.
- 1:57:56Yeah. Yeah, Frank stuff is so sad,
- 1:57:58man. God, it's tragic.
- 1:57:59Yeah, but it's cool, really, that that family is what holds
- 1:58:02this baby together for me, I guess.
- 1:58:04Yeah. I guess.
- 1:58:06Yep. Frank and Hannah.
- 1:58:08OK. And that's our reviews.
- 1:58:10Thank you guys for submitting those.
- 1:58:11We appreciate discussing them. Glad to see love for this, maybe
- 1:58:14even 21 years later. Yeah, I mean, it's one of those
- 1:58:17that has an impact and I think it's especially after
- 1:58:21experiencing the pandemic ourselves, it's kind of fun to.
- 1:58:24Maybe not fun, but interesting to revisit too.
- 1:58:27But that's it for this one. So what are we talking about
- 1:58:31next month, Jesse? Well, surprisingly, we actually
- 1:58:35already have most of the September schedule plotted out.
- 1:58:38We do, yes, and I really want to start things off getting weird.
- 1:58:44Y'all, we're going to watch Infinity pool.
- 1:58:48Oh boy, that was a Speaking of dongs and nipples.
- 1:58:54Yep, some very unsettling sexual things on film.
- 1:58:59And then if you wanna see one of the most shameful come scenes.
- 1:59:06Yeah, like. Yeah, I don't know how else to
- 1:59:10put it. And it's just, it's a fucking
- 1:59:11trip. I'm excited for us to talk about
- 1:59:14this. Like in podcast setting versus
- 1:59:17on the right home from the theater.
- 1:59:18Yeah, cinema setting. I've got.
- 1:59:21I've had some time to process it.
- 1:59:22I don't know what I'm gonna think after watching it this
- 1:59:25time as of today, granted, this is the end of August when we're
- 1:59:28recording this, so hopefully this is still accurate.
- 1:59:31September. It's streaming on Hulu, but you
- 1:59:35can also rent it for cheap from YouTube, Google Play, Prime, Red
- 1:59:40Box, or Voodoo. I'd say it's definitely worth
- 1:59:42the rental money. If you don't have Hulu, it's.
- 1:59:45It's a I. You just need to watch it.
- 1:59:49You're. Not gonna not be entertained
- 1:59:51watching this. I don't care if you're gonna
- 1:59:53feel something, yeah. Yeah, it's gonna be emotion at
- 1:59:57the minimum. If you pay some money for it,
- 1:59:59you're gonna be like, OK, well, I paid.
- 2:00:01Yeah, you're like I. Got my money's worth.
- 2:00:03I don't know if I like like that.
- 2:00:05I got my money's worth, but I got my money's worth.
- 2:00:08But I did see that that weird come scene.
- 2:00:11So lots, lots of fun to be had. An Infinity pool.
- 2:00:13It's a newer movie. We haven't covered a lot from
- 2:00:172023 yet, so I'm excited to be able to do that.
- 2:00:21Yeah, and it's the horror royalty.
- 2:00:24It's baby Cronenberg. That's true, yeah.
- 2:00:27So we got a lot of tangentially. Tangentially.
- 2:00:33Tangentially related people, you got scar scarred, the other scar
- 2:00:37scarred. And not at 1:00.
- 2:00:39Yeah, I was gonna say there's like four or five Hollywood
- 2:00:41scars. Guards SO.
- 2:00:42Yeah, exactly. But one of them is like a horror
- 2:00:45icon at this point now. Okay.
- 2:00:47So yeah, watch it. If not, you can listen.
- 2:00:51Or you can do both. But in the meantime, you can
- 2:00:54find us on social media. We have a Twitter It's at least
- 2:00:58Faith Pod. We also have a blue sky now.
- 2:01:00Yeah, thank you Queen Bean Tricks for the invite.
- 2:01:04Yeah. So which is actually Blue Sky,
- 2:01:06not Blue Ski as I initially read it.
- 2:01:09I'm sorry, I've heard other podcasts.
- 2:01:11Did you actually think it was blue?
- 2:01:12Ski. Come on.
- 2:01:13Dude. Like it's so clearly blue sky.
- 2:01:16It's clearly blue sky when you pull up the app, but when you
- 2:01:19just see it written, it just looks like blue ski you're.
- 2:01:21Like, what's that one app? How is it the blue with the tur
- 2:01:24like a the? Bird of Blue.
- 2:01:26You know, it's kind of blue ski. Ohh, you know, let's make it.
- 2:01:29Let's make a copy of that. Make it blue ski.
- 2:01:31Through at least fave pod on there too.
- 2:01:33Yeah, yeah, we're at least safe fun on.

- 2:02:26All. Right.
- 2:02:27Until next week. Bye.
- 2:02:31Bye. Purely sorry, a piece of paper
- 2:02:47just moved on its own. Here and then it.
- 2:02:49Was we're already in spooky modes, I was like.
