- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Episode twenty three of NHL Unscripted coming at jan Honestly,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup playfs continue to get crazier and crazier.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We love all sports when it comes to hockey. That
- 0:28Speaker 1: first round there's only one credo. You can expect the
- 0:30Speaker 1: unexpected before we get to what's been just a wild
- 0:33Speaker 1: first round so far. Shout out to Little Team Dinner,
- 0:36Speaker 1: little little morale building, me and Jason Demur's lunch at Brelli's,
- 0:40Speaker 1: a famous spot in seacawk Is on Friday.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Had a great time, little Lunch, Little how are you
- 0:45Speaker 2: get to know you?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Only thing is Jady felt? If you were missing towel
- 0:48Speaker 1: probably should have zoomed in. Tell at some point Little
- 0:50Speaker 1: Team retreat.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Oh so much shit talking going on about towel behind
- 0:54Speaker 3: his back is the best in the beautiful sunny coca.
- 1:00Speaker 4: That's great.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Tell.
- 1:01Speaker 1: If we had FaceTime, Hey, me and Ji are having lunch,
- 1:03Speaker 1: would you have joined her? Like I'm busy, guys, I
- 1:05Speaker 1: don't need to join this.
- 1:06Speaker 5: Yeah, well thanks for the invite. First off, I may
- 1:09Speaker 5: be across the country, but I mean at least pretend
- 1:12Speaker 5: that I don't even have an extra media guy, how
- 1:14Speaker 5: we're gonna get that good point? No, of course I
- 1:17Speaker 5: would have chimed in if you if I if I
- 1:19Speaker 5: will be wondering what's going on. If I got a
- 1:21Speaker 5: sudden FaceTime from the two of you, but some.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Second you'd be alarmed by that, I would be confused
- 1:26Speaker 2: but excited.
- 1:26Speaker 5: And yeah, I absolutely would have come in and and uh,
- 1:30Speaker 5: watched you guys eat Italian food.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Would have been fun.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Now listen to this. So both of our orders weren't
- 1:34Speaker 3: Italian food. One was I got a burger, but asked
- 1:37Speaker 3: me that you get to answer this tal So Adnn
- 1:41Speaker 3: gets the salmon with a salad and we're talking and
- 1:44Speaker 3: he's almost done, but he kind of takes his hand
- 1:47Speaker 3: away from the plate and he turns to talk to
- 1:49Speaker 3: me and this woman who there was no one else
- 1:51Speaker 3: in the restaurant but us, and she comes and grabs
- 1:54Speaker 3: the plate and it was basically throws at the food.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Do you say anything in that moment or do you
- 1:58Speaker 3: be like, oh, I missed my like I missed my
- 2:00Speaker 3: opportunity because the food is in the garbage, and ad
- 2:02Speaker 3: ends like, do I say something?
- 2:04Speaker 4: Ship Now, most of.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Us grew up middle class. You had to finish your
- 2:08Speaker 2: meal as a child.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That has stayed with me as an adult, as the
- 2:10Speaker 1: father children, I finished my meal every goddamn time.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And it's just if you were to saund like I
- 2:16Speaker 2: was legitimate. I looked at di Herse like I'm gonna
- 2:18Speaker 2: say something like you can't do what did you take?
- 2:20Speaker 4: Say?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Are you done? And then they take it. You're just
- 2:22Speaker 2: fucking take it away. No.
- 2:24Speaker 5: The second I see a hand reaching for my plate,
- 2:27Speaker 5: I don't care if there's a single sesame seed left.
- 2:30Speaker 4: On it if I'm gonna eat that.
- 2:32Speaker 5: If I'm eating that sesame seed, as soon as I
- 2:34Speaker 5: see the hand coming, I'm going to.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Whoa, whoa. I was overpriced salmon and salad all in
- 2:40Speaker 2: every last cruton. If you don't mind, absolutely, I'll lick
- 2:43Speaker 2: it clean.
- 2:44Speaker 3: If I want to do not judge raise salmon, this
- 2:48Speaker 3: overpriced farm raised salmon.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Glad run the same page. By the way, John fors
- 2:52Speaker 1: is gonna join us. He's obviously standing. Played by playman
- 2:54Speaker 1: Colin Hockey for forty years. Far as he has great
- 2:56Speaker 1: stories tell if you missed it, co directed a documentary,
- 2:58Speaker 1: co produced one about the whaler. She's got whaler stories,
- 3:00Speaker 1: but also he called the Landiscog game, which we're gonna
- 3:03Speaker 1: refer to it as an avalanche win in game four.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He's also great, great stories as a broadcaster and just
- 3:07Speaker 1: his life in hockey. Plus all three of us for
- 3:10Speaker 1: Cinophon sixty have all seen Sinners number one movie at the theater,
- 3:13Speaker 1: so I cannot wait to hear JD's thoughts and Dallas
- 3:15Speaker 1: thoughts as well. But gotta give flowers and Nostra demurrs
- 3:19Speaker 1: because when it came to Gabriel Landeskog, jays is gonna
- 3:22Speaker 1: make a big impact. And I felt a little skeptical,
- 3:25Speaker 1: like Mike rupp I don't want to misquote Ruppert, but
- 3:26Speaker 1: his point was, hey, game's a great guy. I know
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's an emotional lyft, but as far as actual hockey,
- 3:32Speaker 1: what can you do if you're not playing for a
- 3:33Speaker 1: thousand days? And the answer is he scores an absolute
- 3:36Speaker 1: beautiful goal and gives an emotional lift. And there's a
- 3:39Speaker 1: lot to get to Jay, but I think of just
- 3:41Speaker 1: moments right now. If you told me Landskog, who's been
- 3:43Speaker 1: really one of the bright shining lights that I think
- 3:45Speaker 1: of hockey the last few years as a class act
- 3:47Speaker 1: to see what happened postgame, crowd chanting his name Avalanche
- 3:51Speaker 1: back in that series against Dallas.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That was a great moment.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the whole everything, that crescendo of him scoring there,
- 3:59Speaker 3: but all the build up to it. You know, we
- 4:01Speaker 3: did a show on the day before his goal on
- 4:05Speaker 3: NHL Network on NHL Now and it was miked up
- 4:08Speaker 3: of his first game and you had like miked up
- 4:11Speaker 3: moments of all the Dallas stars guys that going up
- 4:13Speaker 3: to being like, hey, congratulations, welcome back. Just to show
- 4:16Speaker 3: you like how much bigger than hockey this actually was.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And as athletes, you know, you always want to write
- 4:22Speaker 3: your own story and you don't want to be you
- 4:23Speaker 3: don't want to let injuries kind of pull you out
- 4:25Speaker 3: of things. And it's always you know, I had some
- 4:28Speaker 3: severe injuries and it hurts your soul because you know
- 4:31Speaker 3: you're doing everything right, and it's sometimes it's just a
- 4:33Speaker 3: fluke accident like it was for Gabriel Landeskog. He gets
- 4:36Speaker 3: cut with a skate and it's two years of hell
- 4:39Speaker 3: for him. So he comes out of this and we
- 4:40Speaker 3: all recognize that as players, even though we're still competing
- 4:43Speaker 3: and trying to kill him. You know, in a playoff atmosphere,
- 4:46Speaker 3: you're still respect of the dedication, the discipline, the grind
- 4:51Speaker 3: to come back because mentally that just drains on you
- 4:54Speaker 3: what he had to go through. I'm sure, and so
- 4:56Speaker 3: credit to him. And I mean I did I knew
- 4:59Speaker 3: he was going to be impactful. I didn't know how impactful.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And you know, Nate McKinnon talked after last game and
- 5:04Speaker 3: was like, he's blown past all of our expectations. And
- 5:07Speaker 3: I think all of us are sitting at home being like,
- 5:10Speaker 3: holy crap. But it goes to show you that. And
- 5:14Speaker 3: I always got upset with franchises and organizations because they'll
- 5:20Speaker 3: look at a guy that's out for like a year
- 5:21Speaker 3: injured and they'll be like, well, he can never play again,
- 5:23Speaker 3: like the John Klingberg's like, you know, like Gabriel Landiskog,
- 5:26Speaker 3: E've been out for a while. They're like, ah, these
- 5:28Speaker 3: guys can't come back. But I'm like, you never lose
- 5:30Speaker 3: your hockey IQ if you have it. I understand if
- 5:32Speaker 3: like you're kind of a bubble guy and you get
- 5:34Speaker 3: one of those bad injuries, that's kind of a career killer.
- 5:37Speaker 3: But when you're a top end talent with good hockey iq.
- 5:40Speaker 3: You can find your way back from an injury just
- 5:42Speaker 3: because through your smarts alone. And Gabrie Landiskog is a
- 5:46Speaker 3: very smart player. Now he looks faster than before he
- 5:49Speaker 3: got injured, which is is crazy to me, and he
- 5:51Speaker 3: looks even stronger. But his hockey IQ's there. Like that
- 5:54Speaker 3: goal of brock Nelson, you know, he could have drove
- 5:58Speaker 3: through the middle, missed his opportunity. No, he just pulled
- 6:01Speaker 3: up enough and hit that kind of sweet spot, that
- 6:04Speaker 3: quiet ice, and then he didn't wind up with a
- 6:06Speaker 3: full clapper tickle on the rafters. It was a half clapper.
- 6:09Speaker 3: So there over the glove side top chatdar the way
- 6:13Speaker 3: that a lot. There's not many guys that can do
- 6:15Speaker 3: the play that he did, cross body a little bit
- 6:17Speaker 3: like that. That's very tough to do in that moment,
- 6:20Speaker 3: in that high speed of a game, in that atmosphere.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So and that's just a credit to how good of
- 6:24Speaker 3: a player he is. And I mean, it's such an
- 6:26Speaker 3: amazing story. And they kicked the ship out of Dallas
- 6:29Speaker 3: last game. Oh my god, that's a scary team.
- 6:32Speaker 2: They needed to get back in it and they did so.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So I'm gonna give you some some crazy moment, Jady
- 6:36Speaker 1: and you kind of riff on whichever one you like.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So we got Nick Cousins and the Auto Centers find
- 6:41Speaker 1: two thousand dollars for firing pucks at Toronto.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Golden and Anthony still aren't during warm.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Ups and they want a cup together. Next thank you.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Brandon hagel Is suspended a game for his brutal hit
- 6:51Speaker 1: on Alexander Barkos.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I was so fucking dirty. Yeah, that passionate about that
- 6:57Speaker 3: warranted the suspension. And then yeah, listen, didn't.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Touch the cup, didn't touch the pill and it wasn't even.
- 7:03Speaker 3: In the same Yeah, I was in the same zip code.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Did the crime, paid the fine, He's off, He's back
- 7:09Speaker 3: next game.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Tom Wilson of the Capitals and Josh Anderson the Habs,
- 7:12Speaker 1: each find five thousand dollars after their fight spilled into
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Washington bench. As Spencer Carberry said, I was looking
- 7:19Speaker 1: at exit and saw what was going on.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Immediately to the youtub Oh.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I mean, those two big bears just and I don't
- 7:25Speaker 3: know what happened, a slash or something that started that,
- 7:28Speaker 3: but you know, that battle is probably the best thing
- 7:33Speaker 3: that I've watched in the first round of.
- 7:36Speaker 2: That's number one, that's ahead of latis.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Go and well, here's the reason why. It's it was
- 7:41Speaker 4: so old school.
- 7:43Speaker 3: But they're like matching up against each other every game
- 7:45Speaker 3: and after every whistle, it's like there's a game within
- 7:48Speaker 3: the game. They seem to really genuinely dislike each other
- 7:52Speaker 3: or both of their you know, it's like both of
- 7:54Speaker 3: their goals. From their coaching staff to them or the
- 7:57Speaker 3: probably the message to them was like, you have to
- 7:59Speaker 3: make sure Tom Wilson's not effective. To Josh Anderson, they're
- 8:03Speaker 3: telling him, you know, saying that he's like, Josh, you
- 8:05Speaker 3: gotta make sure Tom Wilson is so rattled and does
- 8:08Speaker 3: not want to play hockey because he wants to kill you.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And I'm sure Tom Wilson was the same thing to
- 8:12Speaker 3: Josh Anderson, because both those guys have the capability to
- 8:15Speaker 3: affect the game.
- 8:15Speaker 4: They're fast, they're.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Strong, they hit, and it's just insane that they've just
- 8:21Speaker 3: been battling. Like I am sure at the end of
- 8:24Speaker 3: this playoff series they are taking some hits and it
- 8:27Speaker 3: just seems like they're killing each other. There's like they
- 8:29Speaker 3: don't even know where the bucket is half the time.
- 8:31Speaker 3: They just want to fight, hit, cross check each other.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I guarantee you the start of next season they're fighting.
- 8:37Speaker 3: They're dropping the gloves because it's been a war. And
- 8:39Speaker 3: I mean it capped it off with like, I mean
- 8:41Speaker 3: that Montreal Washington series is a very fun series. They're
- 8:45Speaker 3: making it. I think they're given Washington all they can handle.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And a big credit to Josh Anderson, as Talwood said,
- 8:50Speaker 3: As tal said before the show playoff, Josh Anderson is
- 8:55Speaker 3: a site to be seen.
- 8:56Speaker 1: But the haves need to win Game four. Like it's
- 8:58Speaker 1: been a fun series. But now that it's down three
- 9:00Speaker 1: to one.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we can talk about it right now. Yeah, Okay,
- 9:03Speaker 3: we can talk about I'm so weird with the timeline.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Do you get No, you just can't say tonight, Yeah, Telsey,
- 9:07Speaker 1: you can't say tonight to which you can say game
- 9:08Speaker 1: four after Game four is lost?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Okay, after Game four?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Okay, I feel like I'm breaking the fourth wall too
- 9:13Speaker 3: much here all the fans at home. Uh but yeah, yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: game four that's a killer for them.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But you're leading after what are you doing it? Did
- 9:21Speaker 2: you lose five to you had the.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Love Tom Well? Tom Wilson got away.
- 9:25Speaker 3: He absolutely truck sticked Alexander Carrier and they went down
- 9:30Speaker 3: and do Brandon Newham goes down and scores right after that.
- 9:32Speaker 3: And that's the Tom Wilson effect. That's what Josh Anderson
- 9:35Speaker 3: I think did such a good job of minimizing this
- 9:38Speaker 3: playoff series. But it's only a matter of time. You
- 9:41Speaker 3: can kind of, you know, protect against them, but you
- 9:44Speaker 3: cannot deny the craziness that is Tom Wilson in a
- 9:47Speaker 3: playoff game because he is just off a leash, gone.
- 9:51Speaker 2: A couple moreneads. Your thoughts, like Kings cost themselves, there's.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Perhaps the oilers A baffling Golden Er interference challenge cost
- 9:58Speaker 1: him Game three against Edmonton.
- 9:59Speaker 2: What's the thought here for Jim Hiller?
- 10:01Speaker 3: Oh worst, one of the worst coaching called. I understand
- 10:03Speaker 3: the set of meant that one of the worst coaching
- 10:06Speaker 3: calls I've seen for a goal interference. You know, Darcy
- 10:09Speaker 3: Kemper's like on his stomach. I know, the first swipe
- 10:12Speaker 3: at it from a Van Kink kind of pushes his pad,
- 10:14Speaker 3: but he's like, there's he's getting pushed into the net.
- 10:17Speaker 3: There's not enough there. And I don't understand at that
- 10:19Speaker 3: moment you're tied, You've been kind of dominating all game
- 10:23Speaker 3: in all series, and then you allow them a power
- 10:25Speaker 3: play and you allow their power play to wake up.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And then Evan Bouchard just with this amazing little set
- 10:31Speaker 3: play and I know they asked Leon after the game,
- 10:33Speaker 3: like did you guys plan that? That was a plan
- 10:35Speaker 3: play with a fake like a little drop pass, and
- 10:38Speaker 3: then Evan Bouchard just continued on. I think it was,
- 10:42Speaker 3: you know, beautifully executed, but again just a poor though.
- 10:45Speaker 3: That's one of the calls where we're like, you're on
- 10:47Speaker 3: the bench and all the guys are probably looking back
- 10:48Speaker 3: like like don't don't fucking call that, Like let's just
- 10:51Speaker 3: go play like we're fine, Like we're fine, and then
- 10:53Speaker 3: it just game over and now you've got Edmonton's got
- 10:56Speaker 3: momentum now exactly.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And last one for you, Matthew kud Chuck was one
- 11:00Speaker 1: of my stars. Last week's Intel strip is a late
- 11:03Speaker 1: hit on Jake against fair.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Foul penalty warranted. I was like, you know, if because
- 11:09Speaker 3: there is the past puck versus the Hegel hit, because
- 11:13Speaker 3: you kind of compared to that not worth the suspension
- 11:16Speaker 3: he got the five minutes. I think that's you know,
- 11:19Speaker 3: he didn't get anything extra but I think it was
- 11:22Speaker 3: warranted the amount. I think you couldn't argue that it
- 11:25Speaker 3: was as malicious as Brandon Hagel's, Like Brandon Hagel's was
- 11:29Speaker 3: fucking that.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Was that was dirty, man.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 3: His eyes are staring at the back of Barkov's head
- 11:34Speaker 3: the whole time like he was, you know, a Thanksgiving dinner.
- 11:37Speaker 1: No, no, no, as far as bad hits go, that
- 11:41Speaker 1: is the case when it comes to Kashak.
- 11:43Speaker 6: You know.
- 11:43Speaker 1: The other big storyline, of course, has been goaltending, and
- 11:45Speaker 1: I generally find if I don't have dogglar race, I
- 11:48Speaker 1: don't like it when great regular.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Season performers don't perform well in the playoffs.
- 11:52Speaker 1: So Clayton kersh all the Dodgers like he's one of
- 11:54Speaker 1: the greatest pitchers ever in regular season baseball history, and
- 11:57Speaker 1: in the playoffs he's never been that guy. Finally won
- 11:59Speaker 1: the World Series a few years ago, but again, Curse's
- 12:01Speaker 1: numbers are not the same. So with Gards to Connor Hallibuck,
- 12:04Speaker 1: it's very tough to reconcile Jay that he's gonna win
- 12:07Speaker 1: his third Vesna, which no one's done since Martaan Broa Dure.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He's what a heart trophy, which is very rarefied here
- 12:13Speaker 1: Josie Theodore, Kerry Price, et cetera. And yet my man
- 12:16Speaker 1: is not bringing it in the playoffs again, Leaky Helly
- 12:20Speaker 1: pulled in two straight games after living eleven goals in
- 12:23Speaker 1: Saint Louis.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Now I get it. Blues have won four t street
- 12:26Speaker 2: at home.
- 12:26Speaker 1: They've been unbelievable on home ice, which in a two
- 12:29Speaker 1: oh series lead and what's been a tightling contested game,
- 12:32Speaker 1: now you shot the bed and the Blues.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Are right back in business. What is going on with Hellibuck?
- 12:37Speaker 3: I don't know if it's And I was banging on
- 12:39Speaker 3: this drum this year of like, I'm sick of him
- 12:42Speaker 3: playing so many games and them saying like, oh, because
- 12:44Speaker 3: his style, it doesn't fatigue him. I'm sorry, but it's
- 12:48Speaker 3: different level in playoffs. You know, you're playing sixty games
- 12:51Speaker 3: a year, sixty five a year, whatever the number was
- 12:54Speaker 3: for him, But he's playing the most in the league.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I'm sorry, but his ceiling, like he's not given himself
- 12:59Speaker 3: any room to like elevate his game. And whether you
- 13:02Speaker 3: can tell me that he takes care of himself and
- 13:04Speaker 3: he drinks a lot of water and he's hydrated and
- 13:07Speaker 3: he's eating right and sleeping. Once you get to the playoffs,
- 13:10Speaker 3: it's a different level. It's a different level of fatigue
- 13:13Speaker 3: and you're not doing yourself in any favors playing down
- 13:16Speaker 3: the stretch, like playing the majority of the games. They
- 13:18Speaker 3: need a backup that you know, they had Lauren Boswa
- 13:20Speaker 3: last year and you know they won the Jennings Trophy
- 13:24Speaker 3: together and he still didn't play that much. Of Eric Comery,
- 13:27Speaker 3: I know he struggled this year when he played, but
- 13:29Speaker 3: you need to find a backup because I don't know
- 13:31Speaker 3: if it's ego or it's the organization that pushes this,
- 13:34Speaker 3: but you know, you can't tell me that it doesn't
- 13:36Speaker 3: affect him come playoff time.
- 13:38Speaker 4: And it's not just playoffs, it's a row on the road.
- 13:40Speaker 3: He's like one in six with an under eight hundred
- 13:44Speaker 3: save percentage, just disgusted, like he can't stop anything. And
- 13:47Speaker 3: I listened. He's a Vestna Trophy winner. Can't discount what
- 13:50Speaker 3: he done, what he did in the season, but not
- 13:52Speaker 3: being able to get to the next level for me
- 13:54Speaker 3: is concerning. I'd rather have a goalie that's five hundred
- 13:58Speaker 3: and we limp into the playoffs and then picks up
- 14:00Speaker 3: his game come playoff time, versus a guy that gets
- 14:03Speaker 3: this number one seed then shits the bed once we
- 14:05Speaker 3: start going. And you know, it's also a little bit
- 14:08Speaker 3: of how they play in front of him. But again,
- 14:11Speaker 3: you know, at the end of the day, if he
- 14:14Speaker 3: they got home ice for a reason, all they got
- 14:17Speaker 3: to do is win their home games and they win
- 14:18Speaker 3: the series. But you know, Saint Louis, him being this
- 14:22Speaker 3: bad on the road is concerning because what if you're
- 14:26Speaker 3: looking at if I'm winning pack, it's like one game
- 14:28Speaker 3: lost at home, we're dead, you know, because they're going
- 14:30Speaker 3: to end up they'll finish us off just because he's
- 14:33Speaker 3: that bad on the road.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I asked, Jet, said coach scott 'neil about it, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: I says, I already thought this was. You know, maybe
- 14:38Speaker 1: in mid March, Hey, save Helbuck for the playoffs and
- 14:41Speaker 1: he goes, you know, and kind of what you said,
- 14:42Speaker 1: he goes. He's the type that likes to play a lot,
- 14:44Speaker 1: works a lot, he's in great conditioning, etc. I said,
- 14:47Speaker 1: do you have to fight him when you don't play?
- 14:49Speaker 1: And he said, yeah, like I do. The schedule like
- 14:50Speaker 1: three weeks in advance, go Hey, this second back to
- 14:52Speaker 1: back you're not playing hereyet not playing. He wants to
- 14:54Speaker 1: go as much as he can, and it makes me think,
- 14:56Speaker 1: working right, you've got to save the player from himself.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Sometimes again, like a picture is like I can keep
- 15:01Speaker 1: going skip, No, you're done five inning, Sea, I can
- 15:03Speaker 1: already tell your taler. You got to be able to
- 15:05Speaker 1: make that decision as a coach, and I think it
- 15:07Speaker 1: would be too desperate and gut check to do it.
- 15:10Speaker 2: But would you have the stones to start Comry for
- 15:12Speaker 2: game five?
- 15:12Speaker 1: I wouldn't do it because to me then you've lost heellibuck,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're basically I don't believe it would anyhow.
- 15:17Speaker 2: You can't.
- 15:17Speaker 4: You can't.
- 15:18Speaker 3: There's no possible way you could start Comray. It's over
- 15:22Speaker 3: if you do, and you're quitting you. Unfortunately, because of
- 15:26Speaker 3: how many games you give him in the season, you
- 15:28Speaker 3: are now doing this where you have no other option.
- 15:31Speaker 3: He is your guy. If he falters at all, you're dead.
- 15:34Speaker 3: You look at like the Oilers. They're able to go
- 15:36Speaker 3: back and forth between two and there's other teams that
- 15:38Speaker 3: did it at times in a playoff setting. But again,
- 15:42Speaker 3: take off fifteen games for him in the season, play
- 15:45Speaker 3: fifteen games less or ten games less and that might
- 15:49Speaker 3: help him. Maybe it'll piss him off to play better
- 15:51Speaker 3: than the playoffs for Christ's sake, because Jesus man, it's
- 15:55Speaker 3: like we're all taking Winnipeg every year. Now, We're all
- 15:57Speaker 3: just like, well, here we go again. But as a
- 16:00Speaker 3: great Chris Pronger said when we had him on Players Only,
- 16:03Speaker 3: he just said, you just got to hold home, serve.
- 16:05Speaker 3: It's like they Saint Louis did their job. They wanted home,
- 16:09Speaker 3: and Winnipeg's not gonna go do the business at home
- 16:11Speaker 3: and and and win in Winnipeg.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Loved the shoutout to Pronger, also trying to get him
- 16:16Speaker 4: on the show.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Freddie Anderson hurt in Game four after collision of Timo Meyer.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Logan Thompson left Game three after a scary collision with
- 16:23Speaker 1: Dylan Strom. Your boy Samuel Montemble pulls himself out of
- 16:27Speaker 1: Game three. Montreal miss his Game four by the way,
- 16:29Speaker 1: most candid athlete ever, Dobish when he said, I was scared.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I was crying after. It was the most emotional. You
- 16:36Speaker 2: can't be that honest. I loved it. I loved the candid.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But you're supposed to be an athlete, I mean roboting
- 16:40Speaker 2: I was scared shitless.
- 16:41Speaker 4: I cried.
- 16:42Speaker 3: He's been he's been good too. He's uh, he stepped up.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Game four I don't think wasn't great, but it ended bad.
- 16:50Speaker 3: But you know, early on in that game he was stellar.
- 16:54Speaker 3: So I mean it's tough. But Montin bout pulling himself.
- 16:56Speaker 3: He must have been bad. If he's pulling himself, and
- 16:58Speaker 3: I mean Logan Thompson to play uh in game four, yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 3: is is ludicrous. His his acl was in the tenth row,
- 17:08Speaker 3: like did you not see? It was crazy? He looked
- 17:13Speaker 3: like uh, he looked like a contortionist.
- 17:15Speaker 2: The way you said it was like Christopher Walket. It's crazy.
- 17:18Speaker 2: How could he do this? That's crazy?
- 17:22Speaker 7: But you mentioned Edmonton's golden Well, let's in complete this array.
- 17:25Speaker 7: Skinner Pickard, that's a mess. That's an I there's here's
- 17:30Speaker 7: the thing for me. You're playing Calvin Pickard in game four.
- 17:35Speaker 7: That's it for me. For Stuart Skinner.
- 17:38Speaker 3: If I'm now, if I'm Stuart Skinner or I'm the
- 17:42Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers, this is it for me, Like why would
- 17:45Speaker 3: you try to re sign him? And if I'm Stuart Skinner,
- 17:48Speaker 3: why do you want to stay there? Because there's obviously
- 17:51Speaker 3: no confidence both ways. And you're going to Calvin Pickard.
- 17:54Speaker 3: They need to go get a goalie. They need to
- 17:56Speaker 3: go get a legitimate goalie. Calvin Pickard's proved that he's
- 18:00Speaker 3: one of the best backup goalies, but he's still not
- 18:03Speaker 3: a starter. Stuart Skinner is you showed no confidence in him.
- 18:07Speaker 3: If they went back to him tonight not tonight. I
- 18:10Speaker 3: can't say tonight. I'm breaking the fourth wall, folks. If
- 18:13Speaker 3: they went back to him in game four, I would
- 18:17Speaker 3: be like, Okay, this is fine. But the fact that
- 18:19Speaker 3: you go back to Calvin Pickard in game four is
- 18:22Speaker 3: just goes to show he still gave up four in
- 18:26Speaker 3: the last game.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Game four. You need to go back to Skinner. They don't.
- 18:30Speaker 3: They elect to go with Calvin Pickard, and Bob's your uncle.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Stuart Skinner should say see you later and he should
- 18:36Speaker 3: be on his way.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Carrie alma we u.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It's definitely a fair point, minus the singing. That's the
- 18:44Speaker 1: story when it comes to gold thing right now in
- 18:46Speaker 1: the first round. Hey, but I know I gotta give
- 18:47Speaker 1: you a love on one thing you're singing.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I don't care for it. Well, I do give one
- 18:51Speaker 2: big shot to you and this is underrated skill you have.
- 18:54Speaker 2: You mentioned this earlier on.
- 18:55Speaker 1: The pod saw his Shell now Harmonic Kings and you
- 18:59Speaker 1: played the harmonica, which you've said before that you could.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You gotta bring the harmonica on this set sometimes.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Will Yeah, I'll bring it on.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Uh, I'll bring it on next show because I'm too
- 19:07Speaker 3: lazy to walk over.
- 19:08Speaker 2: To my That's fine. I want to bring it on
- 19:10Speaker 2: and play.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I was just playing some Uh what was
- 19:12Speaker 3: that playing the other day? I was playing a couple
- 19:14Speaker 3: of couple of ditties like you can keep.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Doing the headfield, but I want I wouldn't mind a
- 19:18Speaker 1: harmonica open if you don't mind. I don't mean just
- 19:20Speaker 1: makes makes it like John Popper here.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe maybe I'll record.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Maybe I'll record our opener instead of us using stock
- 19:30Speaker 3: stock audio.
- 19:31Speaker 4: By the way, picker jazz audio.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Picker did start gaing for tonight, by the way, so
- 19:36Speaker 2: it's just to be clear, right, Yeah, you're saying see
- 19:39Speaker 2: you all right?
- 19:40Speaker 1: John Forst is coming up next. Hey, Hey, what do
- 19:42Speaker 1: you say? That's hockey baby? What's the origin of his catchphrases?
- 19:46Speaker 1: And what was it like called whalers games and now
- 19:48Speaker 1: the sal Kracken and of course his favorite job at
- 19:50Speaker 1: Amazon Prime.
- 19:51Speaker 2: The great John Forstan is next coming up after this
- 20:06Speaker 2: our guest this week.
- 20:07Speaker 1: One of the most recognizable and accomplished play by play
- 20:09Speaker 1: voices in hockey. He started out in nineteen ninety one
- 20:12Speaker 1: with the Hartford Whalers, continued with that franchise after they
- 20:15Speaker 1: became the Carolin Hurricanes, for becoming the voice of the
- 20:17Speaker 1: Seattle Crack only enter the league, and of course made
- 20:19Speaker 1: his debut on Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I am slightly biased.
- 20:23Speaker 1: He's my teammate on Amazon, but I don't think there's
- 20:25Speaker 1: a better play by play man in the sport of
- 20:27Speaker 1: hockey and arguably in entire sports than John Forest. Has
- 20:29Speaker 1: been a pleasure getting to know him, not only as
- 20:31Speaker 1: a loving father and a wonderful husband and just a
- 20:34Speaker 1: hell of a teammate.
- 20:34Speaker 2: John forst When you think of hockey, you think of
- 20:36Speaker 2: this man. Foresy, welcome to HL and scripted, My friend.
- 20:39Speaker 6: That's well, at least you got the dates right in
- 20:42Speaker 6: say eighteen ninety one, so that's good man. I appreciate that.
- 20:46Speaker 6: But boys, thanks so much for having me. Jason, great
- 20:49Speaker 6: to see you, and we're gonna we're gonna have a
- 20:52Speaker 6: ball here.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I can't wait for the whaler stories, but we gotta
- 20:55Speaker 1: start current fores you well, you've give me some great
- 20:57Speaker 1: about just you know, I'm gonna ask you for the
- 20:58Speaker 1: pizza Dorkwood story, so get that ready. But Gabriel Landiskog,
- 21:01Speaker 1: what a wonderful story to be back for the Alex
- 21:04Speaker 1: to score that call that game?
- 21:05Speaker 2: How cool was that?
- 21:06Speaker 6: Unbelievable? It was? And I'm proud of how we did it.
- 21:11Speaker 6: It's really a three way contribution. We'll get the broadcast
- 21:14Speaker 6: out of the way. First, it's the moment. The moment
- 21:16Speaker 6: was shocking. There was a tremendous shot. To see him
- 21:19Speaker 6: have the impact he's had in two games is incredible.
- 21:23Speaker 6: And then the way Eddie filled with the information needed
- 21:25Speaker 6: after the goal was scored. Jody kind of captured the
- 21:28Speaker 6: essence as an ex player between the benches of what
- 21:30Speaker 6: that was like down there. But by and large, and
- 21:33Speaker 6: I think you know, ad Nan, you and I can
- 21:35Speaker 6: relate to it a little bit. But Jason knows because
- 21:38Speaker 6: he played, and he knows the inner workings of a room,
- 21:41Speaker 6: and he knows when a player of that stature is
- 21:43Speaker 6: injured like that. And you're a teammate, and he's a
- 21:46Speaker 6: family member, and you're going through this with him and
- 21:49Speaker 6: you're feeling his pain, you're feeling his depression, you're feeling
- 21:52Speaker 6: everything that Gabe went through to get here. It's remarkable.
- 21:57Speaker 6: So I think it's one of the greatest comeback stories
- 21:59Speaker 6: in all of sports, never mind dockey, when you're take
- 22:02Speaker 6: in consideration the seriousness of the injury, the surgery, the
- 22:06Speaker 6: fact that not many hockey players, if any, have gone
- 22:08Speaker 6: through this, uh, and what he had to do to
- 22:10Speaker 6: get back to this spot and over a thousand days
- 22:13Speaker 6: to score that goal and it was a beautiful roof
- 22:15Speaker 6: job right, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful shot.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I mean so good to have you on this show.
- 22:22Speaker 3: And you know now that I've dipped my tone of
- 22:24Speaker 3: the water a little bit on the commentating play by play,
- 22:27Speaker 3: color commentary and just being enamored by this side of
- 22:31Speaker 3: the game. And I always like to ask, like a
- 22:34Speaker 3: moment that big, you know, and you know the backstory
- 22:37Speaker 3: of this, and because you're so professional, you kind of
- 22:40Speaker 3: know the the moments that's that come afterwards, Like for you,
- 22:44Speaker 3: is it less is more? Or is there a cadence
- 22:47Speaker 3: that you'd like to follow or is it? Very much
- 22:49Speaker 3: just like what's the secret sauce for you? Capturing those
- 22:52Speaker 3: kind of big moments.
- 22:53Speaker 6: I've learned and sometimes the hard way that as a broadcaster,
- 22:59Speaker 6: the bigger the moment, the less is needed. You know,
- 23:03Speaker 6: when when when Joe Buck said see you tomorrow or
- 23:07Speaker 6: whatever that call was, see it tomorrow night. That's all
- 23:11Speaker 6: you need. If people don't know what you mean, well
- 23:13Speaker 6: they'll figure it out. In this case, people have asked
- 23:17Speaker 6: me since last night, you know, did you think of
- 23:19Speaker 6: that before?
- 23:20Speaker 2: No.
- 23:20Speaker 6: First of all, I had to make sure it was
- 23:22Speaker 6: Landeskog and not are Terry Lekkinen. You know, from our
- 23:26Speaker 6: viewpoint in Ballerina it's not the best. And they have
- 23:29Speaker 6: this cable camera that goes back and forth on a
- 23:32Speaker 6: sling shot that takes away your vision. And that thing
- 23:36Speaker 6: was in the vicinity when Nelson made the pass and
- 23:39Speaker 6: then Landeskog gets a shot off, and instinctively I came
- 23:43Speaker 6: out with you know, the guess who? And then you
- 23:45Speaker 6: let it breathe a little bit, and then Eddie came
- 23:48Speaker 6: in with the film. I mean, if that was me
- 23:51Speaker 6: twenty years ago, I might have rattled off the amount
- 23:53Speaker 6: of days and what he had gone through by the
- 23:56Speaker 6: time I got done the call, I hope would have
- 23:59Speaker 6: would have been okay, but I don't know if it
- 24:01Speaker 6: was would have been all right. I mean, I just
- 24:04Speaker 6: think the bigger the game, the less you need, you know,
- 24:07Speaker 6: And as we go deeper in the playoffs, you don't
- 24:10Speaker 6: need all the window dressing on gold calls. You just
- 24:12Speaker 6: need the goal. The crowd's gonna take care of the
- 24:15Speaker 6: rest of it, and the faces of the guys, the
- 24:17Speaker 6: dejection on one side, the jubilation on the other side.
- 24:20Speaker 6: You know you're gonna take care of all.
- 24:21Speaker 3: That all right before you ask the question at I
- 24:24Speaker 3: just that it's such a powerful statement though, when you
- 24:27Speaker 3: listen to that, the bigger the game, the less is needed.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I gin, that's so cooled.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Dan RWs Andowski and Randy Hank kind of told me
- 24:33Speaker 3: something similar, So I just love that you kind of
- 24:36Speaker 3: echoed that.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Go ahead and no, it's one hundred percent true, There's
- 24:38Speaker 1: no question about it. It's interesting.
- 24:40Speaker 2: For see, I know how hard you work, how much
- 24:41Speaker 2: you prepare.
- 24:42Speaker 1: You're diligently working not only in the crack of but
- 24:44Speaker 1: also with us on Amazon also TNT. One of my
- 24:47Speaker 1: favorite moments of working with you was. You're in Denver,
- 24:49Speaker 1: and I'm telling you how great cal mccarr interview was.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And I said, I asked him the fact that he
- 24:54Speaker 1: was named it for Kale Houlse, And without missing a beat,
- 24:57Speaker 1: you just looked at you.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Kale Holse number thirty two, like you have such an
- 25:01Speaker 2: unbelievable He.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Also player scored like a career eighty two HL. And
- 25:05Speaker 1: you have kill Holt's number memorizer.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Yeah, but where.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Does that stem from?
- 25:08Speaker 1: How that is so hard to memorize names and numbers
- 25:12Speaker 1: day after day and the pronunciations and the detail.
- 25:16Speaker 2: How do you do it?
- 25:18Speaker 6: Well? You want me to go nineteen seventy five Philadelphia
- 25:20Speaker 6: Flyers number two, Well number one, Bernie Parant number two,
- 25:25Speaker 6: Ed van Imp number three, Tom Blayden number four, Barry
- 25:29Speaker 6: Ashby number five, Larry Goodenough number six, Moves Stupont number seven,
- 25:35Speaker 6: Bill Barber number eight, Dave Schultz. I'll stop there, what
- 25:38Speaker 6: I okay? Okay? So, I mean I've always had this
- 25:42Speaker 6: stupid knack since I was a little boy, and my
- 25:45Speaker 6: mom was really great. You know, my mom was like
- 25:47Speaker 6: trying to figure out what the hell she was going
- 25:48Speaker 6: to do with me and where she was going to
- 25:50Speaker 6: point me in the right direction because I loved sports,
- 25:53Speaker 6: played played various sports and was okay in some of
- 25:56Speaker 6: them and others not. But for me, my dad and
- 26:00Speaker 6: I had a connection with with hockey as a connection
- 26:03Speaker 6: for us to go to games and Springfield, Massachusetts, and
- 26:06Speaker 6: that was our time together. And then my mom was
- 26:08Speaker 6: figuring out how I was going to read more because
- 26:10Speaker 6: I didn't like to read. All I wanted to do
- 26:12Speaker 6: was go out and play. I wasn't any different than
- 26:13Speaker 6: anybody else, right, But she knew, you know, hey, maybe
- 26:17Speaker 6: this thing you're doing off the TV and I was
- 26:19Speaker 6: calling games. I was like eight nine years old, maybe
- 26:21Speaker 6: you need to read the history of hockey. And I did,
- 26:23Speaker 6: and then I could remember things. So I've always had,
- 26:26Speaker 6: you know, somewhat of a photographic memory, and it helps
- 26:29Speaker 6: in this racket. It really does.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Talk to me about calling games and Springfield, mass because
- 26:34Speaker 3: I got to play Worcester, mass.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Yeah, hot spot, Springfield, Yeah, Yeah, I got to play
- 26:39Speaker 6: the Falcon.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I wanted to play the Falcons at the time. Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Just talk about that experience coming up and not in
- 26:46Speaker 3: your hometown as well, calling games there.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Never thought it would happen. It was really an accident.
- 26:50Speaker 6: I got a chance in nineteen eighty four. The owner
- 26:52Speaker 6: of the team was a guy named Peter Cooney, and
- 26:55Speaker 6: he needed some help in the front office. And I
- 26:57Speaker 6: was coming out of grad school and just looking for
- 26:59Speaker 6: an internship and I all my experience Jay's broadcasting was
- 27:04Speaker 6: in my living room with my dad. Is my color
- 27:06Speaker 6: guy from like age eight to like sixteen. When I
- 27:10Speaker 6: got too cool for it and I wasn't going to
- 27:12Speaker 6: do this anymore and he wasn't taking the job seriously,
- 27:15Speaker 6: so I basically fired him. So that was the end
- 27:18Speaker 6: of that. But what ended up happening was Peter asked me,
- 27:24Speaker 6: you can come do your internship with us and work
- 27:26Speaker 6: in the front office. Have any broadcast experience? I said, yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 6: I got a ton. And he never asked me for
- 27:31Speaker 6: who or where or a sample or anything. And he
- 27:35Speaker 6: let me do some color. And the guy that was
- 27:37Speaker 6: calling the games wasn't cut out for and he left
- 27:39Speaker 6: after a year, and I got the gig and that
- 27:42Speaker 6: was it, and it was on the job training. And
- 27:44Speaker 6: the nineteen eighties in the American Hockey League were absolutely stellar.
- 27:49Speaker 6: It was an unbelievable experience. I mean, you didn't have
- 27:54Speaker 6: any credit unless you're coming out of the Western League
- 27:56Speaker 6: with about three hundred pims, you know, like it was.
- 27:58Speaker 6: It was, It was legitimate. Every night was like the
- 28:02Speaker 6: things that we look you know, like the nine sec
- 28:04Speaker 6: at the Four Nations where everybody was going, Wow, this
- 28:07Speaker 6: is the greatest thing I've ever seen. We saw that
- 28:09Speaker 6: every night. I mean you saw that when a team
- 28:11Speaker 6: was like in a three game slide, they'd have to
- 28:13Speaker 6: have a bench clearing brawl to get out of it,
- 28:16Speaker 6: you know, to come together. Different era, lots of fun.
- 28:19Speaker 6: The boys were great to me, a lot of lifelong
- 28:22Speaker 6: friends that I still have to this day from those teams.
- 28:27Speaker 6: We won two championships at the end of my run.
- 28:29Speaker 6: It was seven years there, back to back with two
- 28:32Speaker 6: different affiliates, and I got a lot of stories, including
- 28:35Speaker 6: a brawl in nineteen eighty seven that lasted about twenty
- 28:39Speaker 6: five minutes and had had four I believe four NHL coaches,
- 28:45Speaker 6: Todd McClellan, Bruce Boudreau, Mark Crawford, and Claude Julian all playing.
- 28:50Speaker 2: In the game.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Yeah, in the fight, Yeah, And McClelland showed it to
- 28:54Speaker 6: the Sharks a few years ago. They were kind of
- 28:57Speaker 6: in a Yeah, and it was it's nineteen eighty seven,
- 28:59Speaker 6: it's me before puberty. I don't sound anything like this,
- 29:03Speaker 6: and it is. It's remarkable. And it was just an
- 29:07Speaker 6: all out brawl with a head budding incident and a
- 29:10Speaker 6: lot of things. And it actually the it was on
- 29:14Speaker 6: television and the resolution that's available on YouTube isn't that bad,
- 29:18Speaker 6: so look into it. It's it's quite an epic brawl.
- 29:21Speaker 6: And anyway, he showed it to the Sharks before a
- 29:24Speaker 6: game and he was like, I got to show you
- 29:26Speaker 6: guys something. It was him in this brawl with all
- 29:30Speaker 6: these other guys. Is remarkable. Yeah, Springfield Indians fredericton Express
- 29:35Speaker 6: Back in the Day nineteen eighty seven special.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah are our producer tal Ponchowski.
- 29:41Speaker 1: John just co directed and co produced a documentary about
- 29:44Speaker 1: the Whalers. And I texted you in our Amazon friends
- 29:47Speaker 1: that great clip of the final game on a meaningless night,
- 29:49Speaker 1: a game that has so much meaning.
- 29:51Speaker 2: First off, great turn of phrase. Secondly, what was that
- 29:54Speaker 2: night like?
- 29:56Speaker 6: Well, the day, I mean I remember just about everything
- 29:59Speaker 6: about it. I mean the first of all, was a
- 30:01Speaker 6: total shock to us that worked for the team that
- 30:03Speaker 6: was actually going to happen. They kept us in the
- 30:05Speaker 6: dark on all of this. We actually found out my
- 30:08Speaker 6: wife and I middle of March, Patrick Wahsted on his head.
- 30:12Speaker 6: I think the whale outshot Colorado like forty eight seventeen.
- 30:16Speaker 6: Lost the game three. Nothing went home, had something to eat,
- 30:20Speaker 6: turned down the local news, and there it was live
- 30:22Speaker 6: from Capitol Hill. The Whalers are moving. That's how I
- 30:25Speaker 6: found out. No one that I worked with had told
- 30:27Speaker 6: us there wasn't an organizational meeting or anything like that.
- 30:30Speaker 6: So once you get through that, it's about another month
- 30:34Speaker 6: before the last game, three weeks or so, and I
- 30:36Speaker 6: remember driving into the arena that day. It was an
- 30:39Speaker 6: afternoon game. And this is going to sound hokey or
- 30:44Speaker 6: like made up, but it's not. There was a dark
- 30:46Speaker 6: cloud over the Hartford Civic Center and it was this
- 30:50Speaker 6: isolated front that was rolling through and basically it was
- 30:52Speaker 6: a nice sunny day. And then all of a sudden,
- 30:55Speaker 6: as I drove in. I'll never forget that. And then
- 30:57Speaker 6: we did the game, and that open accidentally organically came
- 31:02Speaker 6: to me. I didn't plan that. I didn't know what
- 31:05Speaker 6: the hell I was going to say. We had these
- 31:08Speaker 6: production meetings about this game, you know, the day before
- 31:12Speaker 6: and the day of how are we going to present this?
- 31:17Speaker 6: And we had to do a very emotional game. It
- 31:19Speaker 6: makes sense of it, all right. You couldn't start laboring
- 31:23Speaker 6: what was going on or getting lost in the emotion.
- 31:25Speaker 6: The fans were showing it had to be professional and
- 31:29Speaker 6: we and we did so. Years and years later, I
- 31:31Speaker 6: watched it all back because I just couldn't. That was tough.
- 31:35Speaker 6: When a team leaves the city, no matter what the circumstances,
- 31:39Speaker 6: it's gut wrenching, it really is. And those people are
- 31:43Speaker 6: still bitter about it to this day. You know, there's
- 31:45Speaker 6: two sides of the story, but the fans are the
- 31:48Speaker 6: ones that get their hearts, you know, ripped out.
- 31:51Speaker 4: What why? You know?
- 31:53Speaker 3: Even now, it's like such a popular logo in a
- 31:56Speaker 3: popular franchise, like what was it about Hartford in your eyes?
- 32:00Speaker 3: That just kind of captured the fan base so heavily.
- 32:03Speaker 6: I wish it was as popular then as it is now.
- 32:06Speaker 6: We'd still be there, you know, Like it's just it
- 32:09Speaker 6: doesn't the Only thing I'll say about it, Jason, is
- 32:12Speaker 6: it you know, like it didn't make sense at the time.
- 32:17Speaker 6: Geographically the market's small Connecticut. If you know anything about Connecticut, right,
- 32:22Speaker 6: there's southern Connecticut, which is basically New York, the small area.
- 32:26Speaker 6: Then there's Northern Connecticut, which is you know, covered by
- 32:30Speaker 6: western Massachusetts where I grew up. And we're all Bruin fans, like,
- 32:34Speaker 6: we didn't care for the WHA that was a renegade league.
- 32:38Speaker 6: They were ransacking players from the American League at the time,
- 32:41Speaker 6: which is hurting our franchise in Springfield. So this was like,
- 32:45Speaker 6: you know, the Whalers were drawing from a small geographic area,
- 32:50Speaker 6: the marketing potential really wasn't there, and then he had
- 32:52Speaker 6: building issues. So Peter Carmenis came in as a new owner,
- 32:58Speaker 6: with I believe Gary steering him in other ways because
- 33:01Speaker 6: Gary was ahead of it. Gary was seeing where the
- 33:03Speaker 6: country is going population wise, to the southern belt, and
- 33:08Speaker 6: you had to expand the league then more than just
- 33:10Speaker 6: Canada and the Northeast because you couldn't lure national sponsors.
- 33:15Speaker 6: So in the nineties, this was the vision for the NHL,
- 33:19Speaker 6: along with somehow grinding the players into a salary cap
- 33:23Speaker 6: because he felt that had to happen too. Those are
- 33:26Speaker 6: the two things when he took over in ninety three,
- 33:28Speaker 6: spread the league out, get to Texas and Arizona and
- 33:32Speaker 6: Florida in the south and get to California more. And
- 33:37Speaker 6: then he told the owners, we have to somehow get
- 33:40Speaker 6: off a free market system, which they did, and that's
- 33:43Speaker 6: a different conversation, but he was successful in doing that
- 33:47Speaker 6: and that was not easy. And you know, look where
- 33:50Speaker 6: we are today. I think we're headed in a great direction. Right.
- 33:54Speaker 1: One thing that's so impressive about you, John, is you've
- 33:56Speaker 1: called hockey for forty years. You're a man of a
- 33:58Speaker 1: certain age, and yet you have a great knack for
- 34:01Speaker 1: connecting with young audiences. And I think it's because of
- 34:03Speaker 1: your passion, your enthusiasm, and a couple of all time
- 34:06Speaker 1: great catchphrases. That's hockey, baby, even better best, Hey, Hey,
- 34:10Speaker 1: what do you say? And as you've told me, the
- 34:12Speaker 1: best phrases come with a personal connection, because that's what
- 34:15Speaker 1: my dad used to say.
- 34:16Speaker 6: Yeah, my dad said that to everybody. Used to meet.
- 34:19Speaker 6: He said it to us on the ball field, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 6: he coached baseball and that was his big thing. And again,
- 34:26Speaker 6: as I said earlier, my dad was my first color man, right.
- 34:29Speaker 6: He was my first analyst and also my best friend.
- 34:33Speaker 6: So as I was very fortunate to have a relationship
- 34:36Speaker 6: with my father like I had. And so when I
- 34:40Speaker 6: got my first job, and this is a little bit
- 34:42Speaker 6: of a sad story, but it gets to a point.
- 34:45Speaker 6: I had my first paycheck as an announcer and we
- 34:48Speaker 6: played Rochester that night in Springfield or January nineteen eighty five.
- 34:53Speaker 6: He was at the game with my mom. I was
- 34:55Speaker 6: still living at home at the time with my future
- 34:57Speaker 6: wife who's now my wife and still with me forever
- 35:00Speaker 6: whatever reason. But anyway, she's upstairs. But anyway, yeah, yeah, okay,
- 35:06Speaker 6: you said it, not me. So anyway, I come home
- 35:10Speaker 6: and just we go out after the game, my wife
- 35:12Speaker 6: and I and she's down the basement. I go to
- 35:13Speaker 6: my room, I go to sleep whatever. My mom wakes up.
- 35:15Speaker 6: My dad's dying. I gave him CPR was certified at
- 35:19Speaker 6: the time. He passed away at fifty nine. So now
- 35:23Speaker 6: I'm starting my career. And this was my mentor, this
- 35:26Speaker 6: was my guy. This was a guy that if he
- 35:28Speaker 6: was here today, he'd be in the booth with me.
- 35:30Speaker 6: I mean, ads, if he was able to come to
- 35:33Speaker 6: Canada with our shows on Monday night, he'd be right.
- 35:35Speaker 6: They'd probably like you more than me. But you know,
- 35:40Speaker 6: this is but anyway, so that was his phrase. So
- 35:42Speaker 6: I started to use it on goals in the minor leagues,
- 35:44Speaker 6: and then I used it on goals when I thought
- 35:46Speaker 6: the game is clinched and over. And then when they
- 35:49Speaker 6: won the two Calder Cups, they started to write about it.
- 35:53Speaker 6: I took it with me to the NHL and some
- 35:55Speaker 6: people poke holes in it, and that's one that I
- 35:58Speaker 6: don't care if they do that. You know, it's a
- 36:00Speaker 6: hockey thing or whatever. That's a personal thing for me.
- 36:03Speaker 6: So now when the games in the bag, in my mind,
- 36:06Speaker 6: I tag a goal with it.
- 36:07Speaker 1: That's when I remember it was in the promos and
- 36:09Speaker 1: I said, of course, you have to use it once
- 36:11Speaker 1: a game.
- 36:11Speaker 2: You said, oh I can't. I only use it very
- 36:13Speaker 2: specific time.
- 36:14Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, very specific times on that one. And then
- 36:19Speaker 6: that's hockey I've been using for years, and that's hockey
- 36:22Speaker 6: baby just came together organically. And that too is earmarked
- 36:26Speaker 6: for a play that really thrills me. So I'm very
- 36:29Speaker 6: selfish on that one. Okay, if if I feel it,
- 36:33Speaker 6: then it's coming out, and I'm glad I can use
- 36:36Speaker 6: it nationally, you know, Like I really worried about that
- 36:38Speaker 6: when I was younger, as a so called national announcer.
- 36:42Speaker 6: You know, what are you going to do with this stuff?
- 36:44Speaker 6: I think it adds something to the game and so
- 36:47Speaker 6: and my personality and in the terms of being yourself,
- 36:50Speaker 6: I kind of just throw it out there and that's
- 36:53Speaker 6: cracking hockey Baby. Just started from the very beginning as
- 36:57Speaker 6: a hashtag for all their community involvement before they dropped
- 37:01Speaker 6: the puck, and so I've been using it to wins there.
- 37:05Speaker 6: The team loves it, and but it's also a sarcastic
- 37:08Speaker 6: thing because people will get on the old social media
- 37:12Speaker 6: when they lose five in a row and say, that's
- 37:14Speaker 6: cracking hockey baby.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Listen, they they it's a good thing that there's a
- 37:20Speaker 3: lot of new fans because they have struggled kind of
- 37:22Speaker 3: the past.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Couple of years.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I always like to talk to the
- 37:26Speaker 3: guys that work closely the most, the closest to the team,
- 37:30Speaker 3: which is you and you see them day in and
- 37:32Speaker 3: day out. Kind of what do you see from them
- 37:34Speaker 3: and what do you see moving forward from like some
- 37:36Speaker 3: players to watch and also just the general outlook at
- 37:39Speaker 3: the team.
- 37:40Speaker 6: Well, as we as we do this, they they are
- 37:45Speaker 6: they are searching for identity in a big way. They
- 37:48Speaker 6: don't have one, to be fair, the kracking or a
- 37:52Speaker 6: team that's right now pretty faceless. They're going through another
- 37:56Speaker 6: coaching change. Dan worked hard. Dan got them to play
- 38:01Speaker 6: as he was always preaching North and try to open
- 38:05Speaker 6: up their game offensively because they struggle to score so
- 38:08Speaker 6: much in the third year under Dave Haxtall. But with
- 38:11Speaker 6: Hackstall in the three years they were top ten defensive
- 38:13Speaker 6: team and all the metrics. So they robbed Peter to
- 38:17Speaker 6: pay Paul and they lost it and they couldn't defend
- 38:22Speaker 6: for my money all season and they look lost in
- 38:25Speaker 6: the D zone. And so now whoever the new coaching
- 38:28Speaker 6: has to kind of repair that. But I think the
- 38:30Speaker 6: Kraken now are finally reaching a breaking point of the
- 38:33Speaker 6: original group that was there, and they've really gone hard
- 38:37Speaker 6: at drafting and developing, and maybe to a fault. I
- 38:40Speaker 6: don't know. I know Ron's game plan, I know what
- 38:43Speaker 6: he was attempting to do in Carolina, as some of
- 38:45Speaker 6: those fruits are right there now with the Canes and
- 38:48Speaker 6: some of it. They've done a good job with the
- 38:50Speaker 6: new group to come in and improve on that. But
- 38:53Speaker 6: now there's a managerial change or at least a shift
- 38:56Speaker 6: in direction now with Jason Botrel and how this relates
- 38:59Speaker 6: to Ron as president. So it's really hard for me
- 39:01Speaker 6: to decipher all this because when I left town, none
- 39:04Speaker 6: of this was on the table, and I really thought
- 39:07Speaker 6: Bilesman was going to be given a second year to
- 39:09Speaker 6: at least start. But it appears there's some pressure now,
- 39:13Speaker 6: good pressure. There's fan pressure.
- 39:15Speaker 4: You need it, Yeah, you need it.
- 39:17Speaker 6: There's fans pressure.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Identity and face they don't have. They're too much of
- 39:22Speaker 3: the same. Yes, and no one's kind of emerged as
- 39:24Speaker 3: the guy, and they never really established who the face
- 39:27Speaker 3: of the.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Team was going to be.
- 39:28Speaker 4: So it's confusing, I think for everybody.
- 39:30Speaker 6: Yeah, and and the price point of the tickets in
- 39:33Speaker 6: Seattle is pricey, and there's NBA coming down the road
- 39:38Speaker 6: here at some point. And when you have two winter
- 39:41Speaker 6: teams in the same building, how's that going to go?
- 39:44Speaker 6: You know, when the SuperSonics come back and it seems
- 39:46Speaker 6: like it's gonna happen, they're gonna take over Seattle, and
- 39:51Speaker 6: the Kraken have to be relevant. The worst thing in
- 39:53Speaker 6: pro sports is apathy. You know, you want your fans,
- 39:57Speaker 6: you want your fans to be like Leaf fans, like
- 39:59Speaker 6: you know, they they they're gonna get ticked off and
- 40:02Speaker 6: they're going to have a parade, cancel the parade and
- 40:04Speaker 6: do it daily. Okay, but they're always there.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 40:08Speaker 6: What we worried about in North Carolina was the ten
- 40:10Speaker 6: years they didn't make the playoffs and there's all these
- 40:13Speaker 6: red seats and people really care, you know, and even
- 40:18Speaker 6: even in San Jose, I think they have to get
- 40:20Speaker 6: back to what was the best, one of the best
- 40:23Speaker 6: places to play, right.
- 40:25Speaker 3: It was the but it was the best, right and
- 40:27Speaker 3: you can't you can't linger, to your point if you're
- 40:29Speaker 3: not a traditional hockey market in a lot of the
- 40:32Speaker 3: sense of the word. You cannot linger in a rebuild
- 40:35Speaker 3: and you can't think about drafting and develop. You got
- 40:38Speaker 3: to do what Vegas does and swing and just keep
- 40:41Speaker 3: swinging until there's nothing left.
- 40:44Speaker 4: It's it's so true.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Now.
- 40:45Speaker 6: The one thing the Kraken do have is that there's
- 40:48Speaker 6: major junior hockey there and so there's a little bit
- 40:51Speaker 6: of that, and there's Alaska, and there's Oregon, and there's
- 40:55Speaker 6: there's you know, there's a vast territory where people are
- 40:58Speaker 6: going to come and down from Vancouver, people are going
- 41:01Speaker 6: to come to see McDavid and dry Sidle right, because
- 41:04Speaker 6: you can't get to Rogers' arena, but they can come
- 41:07Speaker 6: to Climate Pledge, so you're always going to have that,
- 41:09Speaker 6: So that's going to help them. I don't think it'll
- 41:11Speaker 6: ever be a barren wasteland like we're faced with in Raleigh,
- 41:15Speaker 6: but I do think you have to show fans direction
- 41:19Speaker 6: and you have to really be organized that way, because
- 41:23Speaker 6: it's too much of an economic investment for them to
- 41:27Speaker 6: come to multiple games. We're talking about people that want
- 41:30Speaker 6: to be your lifeline, your season ticket holders, you know,
- 41:33Speaker 6: the people that come every once in a while. That's fine,
- 41:36Speaker 6: but once you start having attrition on your base, who's
- 41:39Speaker 6: replacing the base? Right, That's kind of where it's.
- 41:42Speaker 2: At rapid fire force. Well, let's get out of here. For
- 41:45Speaker 2: first NHL player.
- 41:46Speaker 1: You were truly starstruck by Bobby or favorite arena to
- 41:51Speaker 1: call a game in Bell Center? Worst travel nightmare on
- 41:55Speaker 1: a road trip?
- 41:58Speaker 2: I have been Game one for Amazon. You were stuck
- 41:59Speaker 2: on the Turma.
- 42:00Speaker 6: No, no, no. The worst one ever was in the
- 42:03Speaker 6: early nineties. Can I go a little longer with this answer? Okay,
- 42:07Speaker 6: We're in Boston and I'm doing the team travel at
- 42:10Speaker 6: the time and doing some radio work for the Whalers,
- 42:13Speaker 6: and this first year the Rutherford Carmenis ownership situation and
- 42:17Speaker 6: we're playing and this is a lockout here. So it's
- 42:19Speaker 6: abbreviated Season forty eight games, nineteen ninety five. Boston. The
- 42:24Speaker 6: afternoon cam Neely hat trick or something, you know, Bork.
- 42:28Speaker 6: They just shellacked the whale that afternoon. We have to
- 42:31Speaker 6: get to Quebec City and it's an all out blizzard
- 42:33Speaker 6: in Boston and Quebec and no cell phones at the time.
- 42:37Speaker 6: So I'm on a landline phone with the commissioner and
- 42:40Speaker 6: weather officials in Quebec and both teams. The game's going on.
- 42:44Speaker 6: I got Chuck Kton next to me, you know, calling
- 42:46Speaker 6: the game, asking me on purpose, asking me on purpose.
- 42:50Speaker 6: When he knows I'm on the phone, Johnny, what do
- 42:52Speaker 6: you think of that play? You know, like, you know,
- 42:54Speaker 6: thanks a lot. So anyway, I'm trying to figure out.
- 42:58Speaker 6: I go down the room and Jason knows. The boys
- 43:02Speaker 6: just want to chirp you. They want to get onto
- 43:05Speaker 6: your skin. They want to see if you've got your shit,
- 43:07Speaker 6: I'm sorry, your act together, you know, Yeah, they want
- 43:11Speaker 6: to make sure you got all this button down all right?
- 43:14Speaker 6: For is what are we doing next? Right? I come
- 43:16Speaker 6: down there. I got everything under control. What are we doing?
- 43:19Speaker 6: We're going to Quincy Market and we're gonna have dinner
- 43:21Speaker 6: right now. So the bus gets everybody. We go over
- 43:24Speaker 6: there and we get some kind of bar restaurant that
- 43:26Speaker 6: gets the guys in there to eat with the general public. No,
- 43:30Speaker 6: you know, Ritz Carlton private room. We're gonna wait it out,
- 43:33Speaker 6: nothing like that. I'm in what was known as a
- 43:35Speaker 6: phone booth. Okay, I'm in now a phone booth on
- 43:39Speaker 6: the phone, and I'm being told by our charter company
- 43:42Speaker 6: we can make a run for it. There's a small
- 43:44Speaker 6: pocket and we're gonna be able to get in. It's
- 43:47Speaker 6: a It's a complete white out in Quebec city. So
- 43:51Speaker 6: we take off the worst takeoff possible. We get up
- 43:55Speaker 6: in the air. The players are all worked up about this.
- 43:57Speaker 6: He can't see anything. I go up in the jump seat,
- 44:01Speaker 6: the only time I've been in the jump seat to
- 44:03Speaker 6: see the landing in Quebeca. It looks like the Emerald City.
- 44:05Speaker 6: We're coming down in oz Oh. This is beautiful. Then
- 44:09Speaker 6: we land, We get off the plane. The winds about
- 44:12Speaker 6: fifty sixty seventy miles an hour snow going sideways, twelve
- 44:16Speaker 6: foot drifts. We get to the chateau front and neck
- 44:19Speaker 6: and we finally get to the hotel and I get
- 44:21Speaker 6: out and I got the key. I got to get
- 44:23Speaker 6: the room keys for Rutherford. And we go to the
- 44:25Speaker 6: door and the hotel the facing of the hotel is
- 44:28Speaker 6: covered in snow. I go to the wrong door. It's
- 44:30Speaker 6: not even the front door. He's right behind me. What
- 44:32Speaker 6: are we doing? Now? You got an answer for this,
- 44:35Speaker 6: I said, Jamie, we gotta go down here were the
- 44:37Speaker 6: wrong door. Anyway, we get in. So that was a nightmare,
- 44:40Speaker 6: and anyway that might have been the worst. But there's
- 44:44Speaker 6: always travel mishaps. You can't get away from that dream.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Broadcast partner dead or alive.
- 44:49Speaker 6: Oh my god. I'll just pick up play by play
- 44:53Speaker 6: guy because he was my icon when I was a kid,
- 44:56Speaker 6: Dan Kelly. You know, Dan Kelly gave me advice just
- 45:00Speaker 6: before he unfortunately passed away in the late nineties. Jimmy
- 45:03Speaker 6: Roberts and he were best friends, and he's the guy
- 45:05Speaker 6: that told me. I told the story on the air
- 45:07Speaker 6: in Saint Louis this year. During that our homice access
- 45:11Speaker 6: right at the Blues game that he told me, never
- 45:14Speaker 6: sell a goal down, no matter who you're working for
- 45:17Speaker 6: or big save. Don't get dejected. If you're calling a
- 45:20Speaker 6: team game and somebody makes a beautiful play, don't say
- 45:23Speaker 6: and he shoots, he scores, we lost the game. You know,
- 45:25Speaker 6: give it a little bit of juice, give it more
- 45:27Speaker 6: in the home side. But he said, there's nothing like
- 45:30Speaker 6: a goal and there's nothing like a save in hockey.
- 45:33Speaker 6: Those are the crowning moments, So deliver it. So anyway
- 45:37Speaker 6: he'd be I'd like to do a game with him.
- 45:38Speaker 6: He wouldn't be a partner from a color standpoint, But
- 45:41Speaker 6: I've got too many partners to go into that. Broadcast partners,
- 45:47Speaker 6: broadcast partners to go into. Yeah, Eddie, Ed'll be in
- 45:51Speaker 6: the front. I'll get a call as soon as this
- 45:53Speaker 6: thing drops. Yeah, no, no good.
- 45:55Speaker 2: And last one, one word that describes playoff hockey.
- 45:59Speaker 6: The greatest, the greatest. There's not thing there's nothing like.
- 46:05Speaker 6: It is the best, the best there is. We love
- 46:08Speaker 6: other sports, but come on now, there's nothing better than
- 46:11Speaker 6: a playoff game.
- 46:12Speaker 1: There isn't the best, nothing better than John Forz and
- 46:15Speaker 1: calling that playoff game. Honored to call him, a teammate,
- 46:18Speaker 1: a friend on Amazonia and Airmont Turner. You me and
- 46:20Speaker 1: Marco going to a Red Sox game this summer.
- 46:22Speaker 2: Until then. Great job Fordsy, thank.
- 46:23Speaker 6: You buddy, Thank you boys, Thanks for having me.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Headfield bringing us into Cinephile and sixty once again thanks
- 46:38Speaker 1: to John Foreslan a superb play by play guy Sinners.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Right now, it's a number one movie at the box office.
- 46:43Speaker 1: It made forty eight million dollars opening weekend. Great and
- 46:46Speaker 1: I get by Demurz last week in which he pointed
- 46:48Speaker 1: out Ryan Coogler, the director who's made Black Panther, Fruitfille Station, Creed,
- 46:52Speaker 1: He's never had a film lower than ninety five percent
- 46:55Speaker 1: Rotten Tomatoes, proof that Demurs is a movie guy. If
- 46:58Speaker 1: I said that to Mike Ropp, he'd say, what's rotten tomatoes?
- 47:00Speaker 2: If I said that's too Grimson, you knew like Ninswick,
- 47:03Speaker 2: I got it eight percent ronch Witter, the critics, ninety
- 47:06Speaker 2: seven percent from fans. You rarely get that kind of approval.
- 47:08Speaker 4: You might get.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Fans, you might get critics, but people are loving this movie.
- 47:11Speaker 1: I went and saw it seventy millimeters Imax in New York.
- 47:14Speaker 1: This is like the biggest theater in North America and
- 47:18Speaker 1: sold out much of the day.
- 47:20Speaker 2: And we got through.
- 47:21Speaker 1: My buddy and I got there an hour before the
- 47:22Speaker 1: movie and he's like, yeah, it's sold on.
- 47:23Speaker 2: I go, what do you mean. He's like, it's sold
- 47:25Speaker 2: on for an hour in advance on a Saturday. And
- 47:28Speaker 2: I look and I go, hey, it doesn't say it's full.
- 47:30Speaker 2: But he says there's wheelchair seating. And he goes, yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 2: and I go, okay, if no one come, I go.
- 47:35Speaker 2: He goes, he goes, that's not a chair. I understand that,
- 47:37Speaker 2: but it's it's a space, because yeah, if nobody uses
- 47:40Speaker 2: that space, is it like a standing room only in
- 47:42Speaker 2: the game? Like, can I just stand there and watch it?
- 47:43Speaker 4: And he's like, you didn't, and.
- 47:45Speaker 2: He goes, I'm not telling you what to do, sir,
- 47:46Speaker 2: But I'm like, I'm just saying if I click on
- 47:48Speaker 2: AMC wheelchair seating and I'm not in a wheelchair, I'll
- 47:50Speaker 2: vacate if someone's in a wheelchair. He's likes, sir, A
- 47:52Speaker 2: better idea is just if you wait a few minutes
- 47:54Speaker 2: and then refresh. I go, all right, fair enough, we refresh.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Once he pops up, I tell anybody, John, get the ticket,
- 48:00Speaker 1: Get it and then I'll stand and you can sit.
- 48:02Speaker 1: We'll switch every hour whatever you want. Like we're going
- 48:04Speaker 1: this goddamn movie. Seventy millimeters Imax. We wait five minutes,
- 48:07Speaker 1: four seats pop up, like yeah, now we're back kid,
- 48:10Speaker 1: So we get two. There's a guy, wait, buddy, twenty bucks.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Go ahead, take this ticket, Sinners Imax, seventy millimeter. Definitely
- 48:17Speaker 1: an homage to from Dust Till Dawn. I know Tow
- 48:19Speaker 1: will agree with that, speaking of the great George Clooney.
- 48:22Speaker 1: And also, I mean, here's the thing. Give it with me,
- 48:27Speaker 1: because I, yeah, I wasn't sure what direction was going Jay,
- 48:29Speaker 1: Like I'm watching, I go okay, I just know it's
- 48:30Speaker 1: getting rave reviews and it's kind of like the Southern Tale,
- 48:33Speaker 1: and it's about these two brothers, my coumpy George's playing
- 48:36Speaker 1: both and you know, black gangsters and hitman whatever.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, Like I'm enjoying. It's a bit of
- 48:39Speaker 2: a slow burn. I'm like, I wonder when it's to
- 48:41Speaker 2: get going here. And also they get to the place
- 48:43Speaker 2: where the music's happening, and Hailey Steinfeld's are sh up
- 48:45Speaker 2: and then and then shit just goes bonkers and listen.
- 48:48Speaker 1: I definitely enjoyed how gory it was and violent it
- 48:52Speaker 1: was and different levels of it, but it wasn't necessarily
- 48:54Speaker 1: what I was expecting, and I'm a little bit surprised
- 48:57Speaker 1: people are loving as much as they are. Like, ultimately,
- 48:59Speaker 1: I walked out there go it's a vampire movie, like
- 49:01Speaker 1: it was great, but it was like, it's just like
- 49:03Speaker 1: a it's a Gordy member, Like why ninety I haven't
- 49:05Speaker 1: checked the reviews yet, why it's sitting such rave reviews.
- 49:07Speaker 1: It's a well done genre movie, but if Jill wasn't
- 49:10Speaker 1: a movie like that which cost it two million.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Dollars to go, Oh, it's just some bullshit schlock movie.
- 49:14Speaker 1: I'm just curious, why Tal, why do you think this
- 49:16Speaker 1: swinge's getting this imprimature of like this is a great film.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Did you see the budget? Ninety million?
- 49:22Speaker 2: Like that's stunning?
- 49:24Speaker 3: Jill Jill before Tal goes and I'll go last because
- 49:27Speaker 3: I'll probably why I won't be a succinct as you guys.
- 49:29Speaker 3: But Jill turned to me because I like, halfway through
- 49:32Speaker 3: the movie, I look over and I said, I always
- 49:34Speaker 3: whisper here, I go, somebody pitched this idea and somebody
- 49:38Speaker 3: said yes, and then she goes better. Yet somebody pitched
- 49:42Speaker 3: the idea and somebody said, here's ninety million, crazy talgo ahead.
- 49:48Speaker 2: That did that?
- 49:49Speaker 5: Did happen? Someone did pitch this and get ninety million.
- 49:52Speaker 5: And his name is Ryan Coogler, and it was his idea.
- 49:55Speaker 5: And that's a guy who can pitch whatever he wants
- 49:58Speaker 5: and get it Greenland, And that's what struck. As soon
- 50:01Speaker 5: as the film was over, It's like, I gotta know
- 50:03Speaker 5: what the source material it was for this. This must
- 50:05Speaker 5: have been some sort of crazy graphic novel or something,
- 50:09Speaker 5: and then I saw it was one hundred percent completely
- 50:11Speaker 5: created by Ryan Coogler, who wrote the screenplay, came up
- 50:16Speaker 5: with everything off the top of his dome.
- 50:18Speaker 2: It worked for me.
- 50:19Speaker 4: I loved it.
- 50:20Speaker 5: But if you're wondering how something like this gets approved,
- 50:23Speaker 5: it gets approved by someone who has launched two super
- 50:27Speaker 5: successful movie franchises, who really can do and has Michael B.
- 50:31Speaker 5: Jordan in his back pocket, and they get it done.
- 50:33Speaker 5: And I think I loved it. I thought it worked
- 50:35Speaker 5: for me, but I could see how some people watching
- 50:37Speaker 5: it it might not work. I would I give it
- 50:40Speaker 5: a ninety eight percent rating. I don't know, I really
- 50:42Speaker 5: liked it. I'm not sure it's for everyone, but like
- 50:45Speaker 5: you had n and I had to get a single
- 50:47Speaker 5: individual seat up front crane of my neck to watch
- 50:50Speaker 5: up at Imax.
- 50:51Speaker 4: I mean, people are going to see this movie.
- 50:53Speaker 2: I know that much.
- 50:54Speaker 4: And I liked Again, I really enjoyed it. Yeah.
- 50:57Speaker 3: We went to the epic and uh yeah, a lot
- 51:01Speaker 3: of it he pulled from his uncle in Mississippi.
- 51:03Speaker 4: He said, was reading this stuff and touching on that.
- 51:06Speaker 3: But you know, story of identity, family, you know, faith,
- 51:12Speaker 3: I think a lot of that, letting the evil in also,
- 51:15Speaker 3: you know, there's a lot of references to the devil,
- 51:17Speaker 3: you know, of God and good and evil.
- 51:19Speaker 2: And blues the Devil's music.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and then and then Jill said something at the end.
- 51:25Speaker 3: She just kind of said, she said, listen, it did
- 51:27Speaker 3: the job it was set out to do, and it's
- 51:30Speaker 3: making people talk, and it elicited a reaction. It wasn't
- 51:33Speaker 3: just something like it was just like you walked out
- 51:36Speaker 3: and you're like I walked out and I was like,
- 51:38Speaker 3: well that was something. I'm like, I think I liked it.
- 51:41Speaker 3: You know, at the start, we're an hour in and
- 51:43Speaker 3: I look over at Jill and I.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Said, it's just gonna get going.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Well, I said, I heard this is a vampire movie.
- 51:47Speaker 3: She's like, it's supposed to be a vampire movie. And
- 51:50Speaker 3: then I mean, I think those the three, the group
- 51:54Speaker 3: of three, like the three initial vampires. I think they
- 51:57Speaker 3: were kind of stole the movie. I think they were incredible.
- 52:00Speaker 2: What was the team? Why were they singing like Celtic music?
- 52:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if the Irish team Irish Catholic
- 52:06Speaker 3: stuff to do with Christ because and he you know,
- 52:09Speaker 3: the interesting thing is that lead vampire, you know, would
- 52:12Speaker 3: take all the memories of everybody that he would eat
- 52:15Speaker 3: or whatever turn. It's been all the memories of all
- 52:18Speaker 3: the lords and ladies of years past, and probably when
- 52:24Speaker 3: what's his name, when the kid I don't even remember
- 52:26Speaker 3: any fucking names, that's how bad it. But the kid
- 52:29Speaker 3: James with the guitar, and he's saying when he starts
- 52:33Speaker 3: doing the Bible hymn of delivering Me from Evil, and
- 52:36Speaker 3: then he's the vampires were citing it with him and
- 52:38Speaker 3: said like I've heard this, you know whatever, and this
- 52:41Speaker 3: kept me comfort and things like that. So interesting movie enjoyed.
- 52:44Speaker 3: It was a little bit like WTF, but yeah, it was.
- 52:50Speaker 3: It passed the time. I wonder if he just Coogler
- 52:53Speaker 3: just sits in the room and being like, I'm gonna
- 52:54Speaker 3: mess with these people and go so far to the
- 52:57Speaker 3: right and just watch them see if they'll turn me down. Ever,
- 53:01Speaker 3: and the execs are like, wow, Will Koog's cooks, He's
- 53:08Speaker 3: done it again.
- 53:09Speaker 1: I think if we were to rank it in three stars,
- 53:11Speaker 1: tal of the most. I liked it at JD just
- 53:14Speaker 1: liked it right, love it. I liked it a lot,
- 53:16Speaker 1: you liked it.
- 53:17Speaker 2: It's just a very degrees. We're all we're all giving
- 53:19Speaker 2: it up.
- 53:20Speaker 3: We all like it as a as a harmonica guy
- 53:22Speaker 3: and a lover of blues and jazz. I love I
- 53:25Speaker 3: got the music jo and I said the soundtrack was fantastic.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Right point, and also got my favorite part, Delroy Lindo,
- 53:31Speaker 1: the great Dela Linda, who says, at one point, I
- 53:33Speaker 1: shot myself.
- 53:34Speaker 4: How good was he?
- 53:35Speaker 2: He's incredible the show ye when he sacrificed himself last
- 53:42Speaker 2: call motherfuckers?
- 53:42Speaker 6: He was.
- 53:43Speaker 2: He was fantastic. All right, Thank you so much for
