- 0:00Speaker 1: I missed you, girl.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Girl, let me tell you something I missed you too.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Look at that tricep though you like that? Yeah, I
- 0:08Speaker 1: mean for a guy that doesn't even lift anymore, you
- 0:10Speaker 1: got a nice try try.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I lift a little bit. I left a little bit.
- 0:13Speaker 1: No, you said you're just doing peloton, but you're not
- 0:15Speaker 1: like curling iron.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Oh No, I got a couple of weights that I
- 0:18Speaker 2: curl every now and then, just to you know, keep
- 0:20Speaker 2: my shit quick.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Oh. I just thought you were doing you were you
- 0:23Speaker 1: were on a quarantine trip where you were just like
- 0:25Speaker 1: Cardio nothing else.
- 0:26Speaker 2: No, I thought you were about to say carbs and
- 0:28Speaker 2: nothing else. Yeah, I'm doing that too though. By the way, A.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Lot of love, A lot of love for the first
- 0:35Speaker 1: animation we put out.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I love it. I love it, and it's so funny.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It's only thirty seconds, but I've watched it like nine
- 0:42Speaker 1: hundred times.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like when we first heard the uh, when
- 0:46Speaker 2: we first heard the theme song. I remember how crazy
- 0:48Speaker 2: we were going for the theme song when we first
- 0:50Speaker 2: heard it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know this company, Cartooner
- 0:54Speaker 1: Radio is an animation company in Brooklyn, and they did
- 0:58Speaker 1: an animation of a moment of Donald and my podcast
- 1:02Speaker 1: of this podcast, and they just you know, tagged us
- 1:06Speaker 1: on Instagram and we thought it was so funny. We
- 1:09Speaker 1: hit them up and said, you know, can we work
- 1:11Speaker 1: out a situation where we'll obviously pay you, but will
- 1:14Speaker 1: you do like some quick, little thirty second moments from
- 1:17Speaker 1: the podcast. And they thought that was awesome, and so
- 1:20Speaker 1: now we were starting to roll some of them out.
- 1:22Speaker 1: In the first one we just put on our Instagram today.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Although this was this was this was this will be
- 1:27Speaker 1: like a week, this will be a this will be
- 1:29Speaker 1: like a week later. But anyway, they did the moment
- 1:31Speaker 1: with Donald giving Jeff Zucker and noogies, and the animation
- 1:34Speaker 1: is so funny. Dude, your eyes are all fucked.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Up, bloodshot dude, Like they knew I smoked that ship
- 1:40Speaker 2: and they knew I drank that ship that night.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Well, we did talk about how fucked up we were.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but I didn't talk about how I smoked that ship.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Like when you when you drink, your eyes don't get
- 1:51Speaker 2: red like that.
- 1:52Speaker 1: They made hot pink. But what they got, you know
- 1:56Speaker 1: what they got. Maybe they're listening and they got because
- 1:57Speaker 1: another episode I mentioned how when you're hammered you like
- 2:00Speaker 1: this this what do you call this?
- 2:01Speaker 2: When you do this? It's a high step. I got
- 2:04Speaker 2: that shit from you though, dude.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Right anyway, just a drunk high step. And then when
- 2:08Speaker 1: they in the animation, when you're headed over to Zuoker,
- 2:10Speaker 1: you're like, get over here. That shit's hilarious.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And what I love about on Instagram. I'm sure they're
- 2:18Speaker 1: doing it on yours too. People are like saying, Oh,
- 2:19Speaker 1: you got to do this moment, Oh you gotta do
- 2:21Speaker 1: the washcloth to be you gotta do this.
- 2:23Speaker 2: They are doing that. What's crazy is that I think
- 2:25Speaker 2: you need to tell each and every one of your
- 2:27Speaker 2: followers that you demand that they follow me or fuck off, because.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I would never followers don't.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I don't listen. I look at what your numbers are,
- 2:38Speaker 2: and I look at what my numbers are on Instagram,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and I gotta be honest with you, I'm a little jealous. Dude.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You're assuming that they're all scrubs folks. They might be
- 2:47Speaker 1: some people that love Garden State and uh, and so.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Where my clueless people at? Huh? Where am I remember
- 2:53Speaker 2: the Titans people at? Where my motherfucking I'm telling you, right,
- 2:57Speaker 2: now where my motherfucking waiting to exhale? People at? Where
- 3:00Speaker 2: my karents ransome people at? Where my trip you people at?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Where?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Listen? I don't put it out there, man, because where
- 3:07Speaker 2: they at they need to represent.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Where your Homie Spamoni people wear them.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Homie Spamoni? Where my next day people at? Yo?
- 3:14Speaker 1: Come on now, Homie Spamoni is a film that Donald made.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's basically the plot of the Jerk, except instead of
- 3:20Speaker 1: a white baby being dropped off at a black family's home,
- 3:24Speaker 1: Donald's a black baby that's dropped off at an Italian
- 3:27Speaker 1: family's home.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Right. No, no, no, I'm not even dropped off. They literally
- 3:30Speaker 2: kidnapped me pretty much.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Oh they kidnap you.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah. They find me floating in the river in Italy
- 3:38Speaker 2: and the mom kidnaps.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Me like like Moses.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Uh well yeah, I guess so. But Moses was you.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Know, wasn't Moses put in the basket.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And yeah, trying to escape?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yes, I have my old Testament? Right, Well didn't they
- 3:54Speaker 1: put Moses? Who the wife?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah? No Moses.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and then Pharaoh's wife found her found out I
- 4:01Speaker 1: went to Hebrew school. Now, Donald, I have a question
- 4:04Speaker 1: for you, Homie Pomoni. For those of you who don't know,
- 4:07Speaker 1: will Pi Goldberg.
- 4:08Speaker 2: The Great and the Great Paul Mooney, the great Paul Mooney.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now do you, Tony Rock? You do an Italian New
- 4:15Speaker 1: York accent?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Right? Ude? Give us you want to hear a sample
- 4:19Speaker 2: of my accent. This is the character right, listen, right,
- 4:23Speaker 2: my name's Renato, right, and this is how we do
- 4:25Speaker 2: things where I'm from. Okay, it's very simple. It's almost
- 4:30Speaker 2: like a New York accent too. It's like a New
- 4:32Speaker 2: York you know.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I've seen a lot.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I was a lot thicker back in the day when
- 4:35Speaker 2: I was doing it. It was so hard like it
- 4:37Speaker 2: was thick, you know. Jamie Lynn Siegler, right, yes, yes, interest,
- 4:44Speaker 2: she was my love interest on it. She's like, you
- 4:46Speaker 2: sound like the guys I grew up with.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Oh that's a compliment because it was a compliment. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: think she's a Jersey girl, is she? I don't know.
- 4:53Speaker 2: They got a lot of Italians in Jersey.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Listen, I gotta tell you something. I've never seen that movie,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but if you.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Dude, I've never seen anything I've been now, I've seen
- 5:02Speaker 2: a lot of them, not bullshiting, man. I remember I
- 5:04Speaker 2: showed you fucking remember the t I was like, yo,

- 5:13Speaker 1: That's not a true story. That's not a true story.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna watch that film because I know how much
- 5:17Speaker 1: people love it, and I love Denzel.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I love so you've never seen remember the Titans.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I have never seen Remember the Titans.
- 5:24Speaker 2: See that's what I'm talking about, right there, guy.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But you didn't read the Garden State script, so fuck off.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But I saw the Garden State script.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And you you didn't even hold the script in your hand.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. I know.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I said I would like you read this and you said,
- 5:37Speaker 1: are there any black people in it? And I said
- 5:39Speaker 1: there's two, but you're not right for them. And I
- 5:41Speaker 1: already cast method Man And you said that I'm not
- 5:43Speaker 1: read it.
- 5:44Speaker 2: That's right, I do. That is true. But I will
- 5:47Speaker 2: tell you this, dick, What a dick, dude.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna watch Remember the Titan. You know I'm gonna
- 5:53Speaker 1: watch it tonight. We're looking for a movie for tonight.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, please do all right, I'm telling you right now.

- 6:15Speaker 2: The good not upset. I'm just a little jealous.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Well, I think that you should give some love to

- 6:45Speaker 2: your friends that six hundred thousand isn't enough.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Tell your friends, tell your wife. Listen. Today's a very
- 6:51Speaker 1: special episode of this show because today's the first time
- 6:56Speaker 1: we're having on as our guest, someone who was not
- 6:59Speaker 1: on the show, someone who had nothing to do with
- 7:02Speaker 1: the show, but I wanted to have him on. We
- 7:04Speaker 1: wanted to have him on because he's an incredible writer,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and amongst many things that he's written, He's written a
- 7:12Speaker 1: self published book about Scrubs that I'm going to promote
- 7:15Speaker 1: many many times. It's called Where Do You Think We Are?
- 7:18Speaker 1: And it's ten illustrated essays about Scrubs and was written
- 7:21Speaker 1: by Shay Srano and it was illustrated by Arturo Torres
- 7:25Speaker 1: and it is really awesome. And he is, I don't
- 7:28Speaker 1: know how well you know Shay Donald. We'll get We're
- 7:30Speaker 1: gonna get him on before you tell me any anything
- 7:32Speaker 1: about how well you know him. But I follow him
- 7:34Speaker 1: on Twitter and he's very entertaining.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know him well, to be
- 7:38Speaker 2: honest with you.
- 7:38Speaker 4: But before we get into that five six seven stories
- 7:42Speaker 4: about show we made about a bunch of dosa, he's
- 7:50Speaker 4: a stories.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So YadA.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Ya wait for it. There he is wait it fresh,
- 8:08Speaker 2: cutting everything. There he is fresh. Therey is.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Oh man, it's so nice to finally meet you. I
- 8:16Speaker 1: am I am like one of your one of your
- 8:18Speaker 1: many many Twitter followers, and I feel like I know you.
- 8:22Speaker 1: But it's so nice to finally meet you in person.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm excited. I'm really excited to be here. I've
- 8:26Speaker 5: been I've been waiting on hold since twelve in the
- 8:29Speaker 5: afternoon for three hours now, just to do that. I
- 8:31Speaker 5: don't want I don't want to miss it. I didn't
- 8:32Speaker 5: want to miss this one.
- 8:33Speaker 1: You know you've been sitting there. You've been sitting there.
- 8:36Speaker 2: We didn't put you on hold. You just this was
- 8:38Speaker 2: like a self proclaim hole.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yes, he want to get he didn't want to fuck
- 8:41Speaker 1: up Donald. So he's been sitting there with his mic. Now, Shaye,
- 8:45Speaker 1: before you say anything, I got to tell you I
- 8:47Speaker 1: was doing research for the show on you because I
- 8:50Speaker 1: know you for being very popular on Twitter. I encourage
- 8:52Speaker 1: you to follow Shae and we'll get his handle out
- 8:55Speaker 1: before the show ends. But he, uh, I'm reading all
- 8:58Speaker 1: about you and your career is amazing. But I I
- 9:01Speaker 1: started reading like he wrote.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:03Speaker 1: This is second book was called the Rap Year Book,
- 9:06Speaker 1: the most important rap song from every year since nineteen
- 9:09Speaker 1: seventy nine. Then he's got another book called Basketball and
- 9:13Speaker 1: Other Things that Obama said was one of his favorite things.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And then he's got another And I'm sitting here going
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna lose Donald Faison to share like I'm sitting
- 9:22Speaker 1: here being like this was a this was a bad idea.
- 9:24Speaker 1: The man has written best selling books on rap and
- 9:27Speaker 1: basketball and I'm.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Going to lose him and you know what I love
- 9:30Speaker 2: and you know what I love?
- 9:34Speaker 5: Oh shit, you know what. What's what's funny is is, uh,
- 9:37Speaker 5: I got a chance. I met Donald one time. I
- 9:39Speaker 5: don't know if you remember.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I do remember. I remember look his book. Before I
- 9:44Speaker 2: even read the book.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Oh you read it?
- 9:46Speaker 2: Oh okay, I didn't read on like you read the
- 9:51Speaker 2: whole thing. Yeah. So but before before I even knew
- 9:57Speaker 2: that it existed, Zach was like you were coming on
- 9:59Speaker 2: and I look you up on uh, I googled you
- 10:03Speaker 2: and I was like, oh, I met this dude. I
- 10:04Speaker 2: met this dude. And when I was going to do
- 10:06Speaker 2: first take, I thought you were going to do first
- 10:08Speaker 2: take that day. Also, but I also met you. Your
- 10:11Speaker 2: wife was with you, right, is that your wife? Yeah?
- 10:13Speaker 2: And she and I got to talk a little bit
- 10:15Speaker 2: more than you and I did. But I remember, I mean,
- 10:18Speaker 2: and then I read the essay and you made it
- 10:20Speaker 2: seem like you were like all crazy, Like holy shit,
- 10:23Speaker 2: holy shit, you got a little bit cooler than that.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Now that my.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Head his head, Yeah, absolutely, inside of my head. There's
- 10:31Speaker 5: only been a few times in my life I was starstruck.
- 10:33Speaker 2: But it was me, Denzel Washington and Michael Jordan.
- 10:35Speaker 5: I know, I know, I know, I'm watching you walk
- 10:39Speaker 5: in that room. I don't know if it's because I
- 10:40Speaker 5: was surprised or because I had just finished, like I
- 10:42Speaker 5: was already working on the Scrubs thing, so I had
- 10:45Speaker 5: gone through the whole series again, whatever it was. But yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 5: when you walked in there, I was like, holy fucking shit,
- 10:49Speaker 5: Like I was trying so hard not to not to
- 10:51Speaker 5: wig out.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You took you were there for you were there for
- 10:55Speaker 2: a book, right, you were there for another book, but
- 10:57Speaker 2: it was it wasn't the rap book. It was the
- 10:59Speaker 2: basketball book right now?
- 11:00Speaker 5: Was the basketball one? Came out in twenty seventeen October
- 11:04Speaker 5: of last year. I did movies and other things, movies,
- 11:07Speaker 5: and so that's when I was in I was in
- 11:09Speaker 5: New York, you know, doing all the press stuff.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Okay, Rich, I'm sorry before we talk, get a word
- 11:15Speaker 2: in Eddy.
- 11:15Speaker 1: See this is what's gonna happen. This is my nightmare,
- 11:18Speaker 1: right Joelle. They just suddenly they turned my mic down
- 11:21Speaker 1: and they just go off.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Well, I just wanted to get into the basketball thing,
- 11:24Speaker 2: all right, dude, get into you said you think my
- 11:27Speaker 2: game would be more like like, you imagine my game
- 11:29Speaker 2: being like PJ. Tucker.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna agree with that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I'm gonna agree I knew it. I'm gonna agree with that.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I'd watched enough.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, a lot of jump shots, some defense,
- 11:40Speaker 2: very competitive and talks a lot of shit. Yeah that's me.
- 11:43Speaker 5: That's about right.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I wish I had a little bit of a you know,
- 11:47Speaker 2: a silkier game. I wish my game was more like
- 11:49Speaker 2: Klay Thompson. But PJ. Tucker spot On, Man, he's a
- 11:53Speaker 2: he's a great uh. I don't even know if you
- 11:55Speaker 2: would consider him a role player. He's just like a
- 11:57Speaker 2: glue guy, right.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Yeah, he's in a sin player on that Rockets team.
- 12:01Speaker 5: I lived in lerrman, I lived in Houston for fourteen years,
- 12:04Speaker 5: so we were there like when he showed up. And
- 12:06Speaker 5: then he's one of those guys who, like, if you
- 12:08Speaker 5: go to the city where he's playing, everybody there just
- 12:11Speaker 5: fucking loves him. Yeah, because all the stuff he does.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, now, Shaye, I have a question, do you know
- 12:16Speaker 1: do you have your book? Like could Donald about your
- 12:18Speaker 1: wrap book? And Shay is everything he writes becomes a
- 12:22Speaker 1: best seller, including the rap yearbook the most important rap
- 12:27Speaker 1: song from every year since nineteen seventy nine, discussed, debated,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and deconstructed. Billboard said this was one of the best
- 12:34Speaker 1: one hundred best music books of all time. Which, holy shit, man,
- 12:38Speaker 1: congratulations on an accomplishment like that.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Round of thunderous applause.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Dan, please put in some thunder supplause. You won't
- 12:46Speaker 1: hear it, Shae, So just imagine it. It's just it's
- 12:48Speaker 1: like a stage. You listen to the podcast, right, Shay.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I've seen you, so you know you know how Dan
- 12:54Speaker 1: really brings the thunderous applause. Now, Shay, if Donald were
- 12:58Speaker 1: to say, because Donald loves rap, if you were to
- 13:00Speaker 1: like mention a year, you don't have this memorize, right,
- 13:03Speaker 1: or do you? Cause if he would just say, like
- 13:05Speaker 1: if Donald were to be like, all right, ninety seven,
- 13:07Speaker 1: would you be like, oh, this is what I wrote
- 13:09Speaker 1: about that.
- 13:10Speaker 5: I believe, so ninety seven is puff daddy. If I'm
- 13:13Speaker 5: not mistaken, which I want to say, you can look
- 13:18Speaker 5: it up.
- 13:18Speaker 1: For so good as sad as I am about how
- 13:21Speaker 1: much how well you guys are hitting it off. I
- 13:22Speaker 1: just feel like, once this rap conversation starts, it'll be
- 13:25Speaker 1: Donald's favorite conversation in the world because he really really
- 13:28Speaker 1: loves rap, like as long as I've known him.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the best music in the world. It was
- 13:33Speaker 5: a can't Nobody hold Me Down?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Can't know okay with him and Mace, with him and.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Mace, Yeah, Okay, that was that one because because that
- 13:41Speaker 5: was when when when rap had like they were doing
- 13:45Speaker 5: the whole shiny suit thing. It was like it became
- 13:47Speaker 5: all about opulence and.
- 13:48Speaker 1: High vollume and high Williams of Mint music videos.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Right that those ones came a little bit yeah, right
- 13:53Speaker 5: right around then.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I remember around ninety seven, I just picked ninety seven Can't.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Nobody Hold Me Down? Was I wasn't HiPE william Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I missaying because I was when I was peeing
- 14:01Speaker 1: fresh out of college. I was peeing on rap videos
- 14:04Speaker 1: in New York and I don't really know the music
- 14:06Speaker 1: that well, but I remember like HiPE Williams was a
- 14:08Speaker 1: god at the time. And that's right around the time
- 14:10Speaker 1: all those Mace Puffy videos were coming out.
- 14:12Speaker 2: That was the one way they went in the desert,
- 14:14Speaker 2: right And isn't j Lo in it too?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 14:17Speaker 5: She's in that one?
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yea, yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Right Donald. Do you want to pick a year now
- 14:20Speaker 1: that he's got it up, Just pick.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Like I mean, but I mean, okay, ninety two, that's
- 14:25Speaker 2: a hard one.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Nineteen ninety two, oh, like I don't have I don't
- 14:29Speaker 5: have the book up. I was love after the song
- 14:32Speaker 5: I wanted to me.
- 14:32Speaker 1: To put you on I don't mean to put you
- 14:33Speaker 1: on the spot.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I just wondered if you knew that's no.
- 14:37Speaker 5: But I will say I know, like I know, ninety
- 14:40Speaker 5: two was nothing but a g thing. That was wow, Yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 5: that was right.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That's a great, great record, man record that was really
- 14:47Speaker 2: really good. That Chronic was one of Oh my gosh, man,
- 14:50Speaker 2: there were a lot of great albums that came out, though,
- 14:53Speaker 2: I feel like in ninety two, you know what I mean,
- 14:55Speaker 2: that was it. Yeah, I graduated, I think from high school.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'm pretty I liked that song rolling down the street
- 15:01Speaker 1: smoking and sipping on gin and juice.
- 15:07Speaker 5: So that's not the Doggie style album. And there's like
- 15:09Speaker 5: there's like a constant debate between which is a better
- 15:11Speaker 5: G funk album, between between the Chronic and Doggie Style
- 15:15Speaker 5: both the dope man, pick one, pick one, which one
- 15:18Speaker 5: do you want to listen to right now?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Ship man. Well, because no, because what happened is.
- 15:24Speaker 1: With to do it. What happened is it's hard.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Man, because Doggie Style, Nate Dog, all these cats are
- 15:32Speaker 2: on that record. Man, come on, this is it's hard
- 15:38Speaker 2: because like Dan, can you I take it back? I
- 15:41Speaker 2: go chronic. But just because of Deep Cover, I could
- 15:43Speaker 2: feel it.
- 15:45Speaker 5: I heard that ship.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I remember when Deep Cover of the movie came out
- 15:48Speaker 2: and that song was on the Deep Cover soundtrack, and
- 15:51Speaker 2: my boy played me that ship and we listened to
- 15:53Speaker 2: that ship over. We listened to that song over and
- 15:56Speaker 2: over and over again. And this is before the beef
- 15:58Speaker 2: with East Coast West Coast stuff, and it was just like, Yo,
- 16:01Speaker 2: this is the this is the dopest thing I ever
- 16:04Speaker 2: heard in my life.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Yes, it's one of the one of those moments where
- 16:06Speaker 5: you like, I've never heard something like this. Yeah, you's
- 16:10Speaker 5: snoop sort of lollygagging out into song like who yeah
- 16:12Speaker 5: is this guy?
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah yeah that and the beat was fucking fire and
- 16:16Speaker 2: fucking and then the cook was yeah and you don't
- 16:20Speaker 2: stop because it's one eight seven on an undercover cop?
- 16:25Speaker 1: Was still ever make a documentary about this? Because I
- 16:27Speaker 1: read that there was talk of it. Did they ever
- 16:29Speaker 1: make it a documentary about you of your book.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah yeah. So what happened is a production
- 16:35Speaker 5: company got the rights for it, and then we signed
- 16:37Speaker 5: up with the Roots. They became like executive producers on it,
- 16:40Speaker 5: and then they sold it to We sold this series
- 16:42Speaker 5: to AMC and they did a six episode thing where
- 16:45Speaker 5: it was like six episodes. Each episode was about one
- 16:47Speaker 5: particular song. They're an hour long, and so it became
- 16:51Speaker 5: like a videover. It was really cool. I got to
- 16:52Speaker 5: go out to New York. They did like a concert.
- 16:55Speaker 5: The Roost did a concert before that, and then they
- 16:58Speaker 5: showed the The one of the episodes is the one
- 17:01Speaker 5: that they did on on Jesus Walks, and it was
- 17:04Speaker 5: it was really really cool to.
- 17:05Speaker 1: What It's so cool because as I'm listening to you
- 17:07Speaker 1: talk about it, I mean, I just think it would
- 17:08Speaker 1: be such an amazing I can understand why'd be amazing series.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I wouldn't check that out.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I definitely yeah, it was great.
- 17:12Speaker 5: You know what's neat is? So they we got all
- 17:15Speaker 5: signed up and they like, we sold the series and
- 17:17Speaker 5: they started working on it and they gave me a
- 17:19Speaker 5: phone call and they're like, hey, do you want to
- 17:20Speaker 5: call in and like we're brainstorming and helping out doing whatever.
- 17:23Speaker 5: And I was like, oh yeah, yeah, like that'll be
- 17:25Speaker 5: cool because I like I know a lot about rap.
- 17:27Speaker 5: We're doing this whole thing. And I called in and
- 17:29Speaker 5: Black Thought and quest Lever both in there and like
- 17:32Speaker 5: everything that somebody brought up, like I had like a
- 17:35Speaker 5: third hand story, like oh yeah, I heard a story
- 17:37Speaker 5: about a party that happened at this thing, And no
- 17:39Speaker 5: matter what it was, Quest Lever Black Thought, they were like,
- 17:42Speaker 5: oh yeah, I was at that party. I rode to Okay,
- 17:46Speaker 5: I don't want to I don't want to help anymore,
- 17:48Speaker 5: Like yeah, guys, clearly you got this. I was gonna
- 17:50Speaker 5: fall back.
- 17:50Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I've been at some places like where
- 17:56Speaker 2: crazy things happened, like and I was just I just
- 17:59Speaker 2: happened to be there when the things happened, like you
- 18:01Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like I was at the party
- 18:03Speaker 2: where Biggie got killed, you know, yeah shit, yeah yeah
- 18:07Speaker 2: yeah did you did you did you hear like the yeah,
- 18:10Speaker 2: I heard gun I was outside, so I heard the gunshots.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I also I spoke to him before all of it happened.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Oh shit, you never told me this. You saved this
- 18:19Speaker 1: for Shay.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Dude, you're not a hip hop You're not a hip
- 18:23Speaker 2: hop I mean, I'm not.
- 18:24Speaker 1: A hip hop dude, but I'm a pop culture fan.
- 18:26Speaker 1: You could have told me you read that fucking event.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, I was at that event event and I
- 18:30Speaker 2: spoke to him, and then the next morning I found
- 18:33Speaker 2: out he was there. I actually found out that night
- 18:34Speaker 2: that he had gotten shot. Somebody came around the corner
- 18:37Speaker 2: and told me, you know, yo, they just fucking got big,
- 18:40Speaker 2: And I was like, get the fuck out of here.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And I remember telling Ricky Bell from Bell Biv Devaux
- 18:44Speaker 2: and he was like, shut the fuck up, dude, you
- 18:46Speaker 2: don't know what you're talking about. And then the next morning,
- 18:48Speaker 2: my boy Dion Richmond called me up on the phone
- 18:50Speaker 2: and was like, Yo, they killed big last night. And
- 18:53Speaker 2: I was like holy and and I was like, holy shit.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I was there, dude. I was. I spoke to him
- 18:58Speaker 2: right before, you know what I mean. I did this
- 19:00Speaker 2: couple of instances, like I was at Nell's the night
- 19:03Speaker 2: all that shit went down with Tupac and the girl
- 19:05Speaker 2: on the dance floor and stuff like that. Like I
- 19:07Speaker 2: was at the I was at the club hanging out
- 19:09Speaker 2: with my friends and stuff like that, and I was
- 19:12Speaker 2: there for like just a bunch of things. Man, it's weird.
- 19:14Speaker 2: It's it's my connection to hip hop runs deep man.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I love I love it so much. And when I
- 19:19Speaker 2: was when I was younger, I would be you would
- 19:21Speaker 2: frequently find me at some of these events that were
- 19:26Speaker 2: considered you know later on that were considered iconic or
- 19:30Speaker 2: pivotal moments in artists careers, especially in Tupacs and bigs.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Those were two big moment. One one was the death
- 19:36Speaker 2: of one and one was where everybody started looking at
- 19:39Speaker 2: somebody as a true troublemaker, which was bullshit, but that
- 19:42Speaker 2: was that was what. From that moment on, Tupac's lane
- 19:45Speaker 2: shifted from you know, actor rapper to activists to you know,
- 19:51Speaker 2: his whole run with death Row and the whole East Coast,
- 19:54Speaker 2: West Coast Beef and all of that stuff. A lot
- 19:57Speaker 2: of it stemmed from that moment. Do you wasn't even
- 20:00Speaker 2: Do you think I wasn't that I wasn't. I don't
- 20:01Speaker 2: know right right?
- 20:05Speaker 1: You know, like that butterfly effect thing, when one thing
- 20:07Speaker 1: happens and then it causes everything to happen.
- 20:09Speaker 2: If I take myself out of the equation everyone would
- 20:12Speaker 2: have got would have got Donald.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Donald like bumped into some waiter who then got into
- 20:16Speaker 1: bad mood and was rude to Tupac, and all of
- 20:18Speaker 1: a sudden, all this ship happened because Donald.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Did do either of y'all follow a writer named Cheo
- 20:24Speaker 5: Hadari Coker. No, okay, so he he like works on
- 20:29Speaker 5: a ton of stuff, but he like worked on the
- 20:30Speaker 5: biggie movie Low Riders. Creed to like a bunch of
- 20:34Speaker 5: the stuff that I like, So I started following him.
- 20:35Speaker 5: But just today he was talking about, uh, I think
- 20:38Speaker 5: it was today, maybe it might have been last night
- 20:39Speaker 5: or yesterday, but he was talking about when when Tupac
- 20:43Speaker 5: did Juice, and he was saying, like when he got
- 20:47Speaker 5: the role of Bishop, which is like the guy who
- 20:49Speaker 5: causes all the trouble in it, Like that was the
- 20:51Speaker 5: beginning of his like gangster rapper, Like it's set him
- 20:54Speaker 5: on that path, right, Like that's just crazy to think about,
- 20:57Speaker 5: like little thing like that, you know what I'm saying.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I was in Juice. I had a really tiny
- 21:03Speaker 2: role in that movie. And the one thing I remember
- 21:06Speaker 2: the most about that movie was the premiere and after
- 21:10Speaker 2: seeing it, and you know, Tupac walking into the It
- 21:15Speaker 2: was like a Lows on forty second Street or something
- 21:18Speaker 2: like that. It was in Times Square, I remember that.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And he walked into the area where everybody was being
- 21:23Speaker 2: let out of the movie, and it felt like he
- 21:25Speaker 2: had like the glow around, like the Bruce Leroy glow
- 21:27Speaker 2: around him, man, because you just knew at that moment
- 21:30Speaker 2: he was out of here. Man, Yeah, he was just
- 21:33Speaker 2: out of here. That's when I became a fan of his,
- 21:36Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like as an actor, I
- 21:38Speaker 2: you know, checked on his stuff all the time, all
- 21:40Speaker 2: of the movies he made and stuff like that. When
- 21:43Speaker 2: I was younger, I remember thinking he's a better actor
- 21:45Speaker 2: than he is a rapper. Dude.
- 21:46Speaker 5: I remember thinking that's like an argument you could honestly,
- 21:50Speaker 5: legitimately make like he was unbelievable as an actor.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, he was a very good actor.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So say tell us, like how you came to Scrubs
- 21:58Speaker 1: and with this book, because I just I was so
- 22:04Speaker 1: moved by a lot of that. I mean, it's funny
- 22:06Speaker 1: your book, but also there's moments I was reading and
- 22:09Speaker 1: that would give me goosebumps, cause you articulate moments in
- 22:12Speaker 1: Scrubs sometimes I think better than moments and Scrubs even
- 22:15Speaker 1: were we right? And no, I mean and I appreciate that.
- 22:19Speaker 1: We love what a fan you are. And I was
- 22:22Speaker 1: reading something you wrote about the episode we're going to
- 22:25Speaker 1: talk about today, my occurrence, and I got goosebumps when
- 22:29Speaker 1: you wrote it. It was about it was about when
- 22:30Speaker 1: I find out that Brendan Fraser's character has leukemia and
- 22:34Speaker 1: Judy standing there, and I'm not bullshitting you. When I
- 22:36Speaker 1: rewatched the episode today, it was even more moving to me.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It was really unique. It was a really unique experience
- 22:41Speaker 1: because I don't even remember the moment And then I
- 22:44Speaker 1: read your essay in his book where Do you Think
- 22:46Speaker 1: We Are? And it gave me goosebumps. And then I
- 22:48Speaker 1: rewatched the moment today and I was so much more
- 22:51Speaker 1: moved by it because I had your backstory. So so
- 22:53Speaker 1: I encourage you, if you're a Scrubs fan, to get
- 22:55Speaker 1: this book. But anyway, I just wanted to know. It's
- 22:58Speaker 1: a long question, but how did you come to Scrubs
- 23:00Speaker 1: and then how did you come to write this book.
- 23:02Speaker 5: I came to Scrubs late. This was this was back
- 23:05Speaker 5: when it was on Netflix, so it's a few you know,
- 23:08Speaker 5: several years ago, I didn't. I had never really I
- 23:10Speaker 5: didn't watch it when it was like got on an
- 23:12Speaker 5: ABC or NBC or anything like that. But I started
- 23:15Speaker 5: catching it when I think it showed up I got
- 23:16Speaker 5: on a Comedy Central, yeah, you know, you know, on
- 23:18Speaker 5: one of those cable channels. I was like, this is
- 23:21Speaker 5: this is like a cool show, but there was no
- 23:22Speaker 5: way to like rewatch the whole thing. You just catch
- 23:24Speaker 5: whatever episode you can. And then it popped up on
- 23:27Speaker 5: Netflix and Laramie, my wife, she also likes to shows
- 23:30Speaker 5: who were like, oh, let's like I haven't seen like
- 23:32Speaker 5: the first four seasons or something, let's sit down and
- 23:34Speaker 5: watch it. And so you like, that's how it started,
- 23:37Speaker 5: was a few years ago, and then it just became
- 23:39Speaker 5: one of those shows that we watched our whole way
- 23:41Speaker 5: through it. We we like fell in love with everybody
- 23:43Speaker 5: on there. And it was one of the ones where
- 23:45Speaker 5: it was like, it's been a long day and I
- 23:47Speaker 5: needed like unwind and relax and I need to like
- 23:49Speaker 5: feel some emotions of some sort. So let me put
- 23:52Speaker 5: put this one on because I think I wrote this
- 23:56Speaker 5: in a thing, but I think Scrubs is the best
- 23:58Speaker 5: TV show ever at like balancing between those two worlds.
- 24:01Speaker 5: You'll talk about it a lot of the time, like
- 24:03Speaker 5: how hard of a transition that is to make from
- 24:06Speaker 5: going from something like totally silly and like ridiculous immediately
- 24:11Speaker 5: into something just outlandish or you know, like crazy serious.
- 24:18Speaker 5: So that's how we started watching that show, and it
- 24:20Speaker 5: just became like like a ritual. Every so often we're like,
- 24:24Speaker 5: we're going to restart Scrubs again, We're gonna watch it,
- 24:26Speaker 5: and then that's gonna be like what we do.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I love it. And you and your wife get in
- 24:30Speaker 1: debates about the show I saw, and part of the
- 24:32Speaker 1: book is an email conversation you have about whether or
- 24:35Speaker 1: not she likes JD or not. Yea, And I really
- 24:39Speaker 1: appreciated your point of view more than Larmer because Laramie,
- 24:44Speaker 1: Laramie loves the show, but it's JD's not her favorite character.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I appreciated Shay debating why he should be.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's like yeah. So that we started watching
- 24:55Speaker 5: the show, and I realized, like, you watch a show
- 24:57Speaker 5: and depending on like who you are, the type of
- 24:59Speaker 5: person you are, just watched it a little bit different
- 25:01Speaker 5: than everybody else. And I realized at some point that
- 25:03Speaker 5: we were very much watching the show differently. I was
- 25:06Speaker 5: watching it waiting for like the JD moment to happen,
- 25:09Speaker 5: when you like make your eyes water or you like
- 25:11Speaker 5: say a thing real seriously, and she was watching it
- 25:13Speaker 5: for like for like a Turk and Carlo situation or
- 25:17Speaker 5: a doctor Cox situation or whatever, and so like, we
- 25:20Speaker 5: should let you know, let's talk about this a little bit.
- 25:22Speaker 2: And that was my favorite, my favorite. I was skimming
- 25:25Speaker 2: through the book because you know I'm not.
- 25:28Speaker 1: But you don't take it personally. He skimmed through the
- 25:30Speaker 1: scripts for the episode.
- 25:31Speaker 2: So one, I'm not a great reader. And my attentions,
- 25:35Speaker 2: my my attention focused on to if JD and Turk
- 25:41Speaker 2: were to ever do a buddy cop movie, what would
- 25:44Speaker 2: it be? And you go through a bunch of a
- 25:46Speaker 2: bunch of lists of what movies and I immediately went
- 25:50Speaker 2: for Running Scared with Billy Crystal Gregory Hines, Like that's
- 25:53Speaker 2: the immediate one I went to. And I was like,
- 25:55Speaker 2: I bet you he doesn't have that on the list,
- 25:57Speaker 2: And sure enough, it's right there on list.
- 26:01Speaker 1: We always over the years, we've always talked about it's
- 26:04Speaker 1: never happened so far, but we've always talked about wanting
- 26:07Speaker 1: to do a buddy cop or buddy movie of some
- 26:09Speaker 1: kind together. I was obsessed with trying to do like
- 26:12Speaker 1: a Spies Like Us thing, because I thought Donald and
- 26:15Speaker 1: I could really do. We both love playing guy way
- 26:19Speaker 1: in over his head and the idea, and like, I mean,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I don't want to. I would never dare to attempt
- 26:24Speaker 1: to remake Spies Like Us because I love that movie.
- 26:26Speaker 1: But the premise of that, like two spies that are
- 26:29Speaker 1: are fuck ups that get in way over their head.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I thought Donald and I would be really funny at
- 26:32Speaker 1: But but it's funny that you wrote a section of
- 26:35Speaker 1: the book about that, because Donald and I always talked
- 26:36Speaker 1: about wanting to do something like that.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Yeah, but like, yeah, go ahead, man, oh, I was
- 26:40Speaker 5: gonna say, that's how you could tell. I was like,
- 26:42Speaker 5: I had just finished up the movie book at the
- 26:44Speaker 5: same time I was doing the Scrubs thing, and I
- 26:46Speaker 5: had rewatched all of like buddy cop movies, and I
- 26:49Speaker 5: was like, yeah, this is like this makes too much sense.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Sit didn't work. Try it does make sense, man, I
- 26:54Speaker 2: think Turk and JD would and and it really comes
- 26:58Speaker 2: through Zach on the episode, first episode that you directed,
- 27:02Speaker 2: where we're doing the whole heathogram thing. It really comes
- 27:05Speaker 2: through there like that's a buddy cop movie or a
- 27:08Speaker 2: buddy comedy in itself, right there, these two dudes going
- 27:11Speaker 2: to adventure and it's a silly one too, so his
- 27:15Speaker 2: boy can get some ass, you know what I mean with.
- 27:17Speaker 1: A letter from Elliot. Actually, Shay, you wrote that in
- 27:20Speaker 1: the in the book a little bit to because you're
- 27:21Speaker 1: talking about Molly Shannon's character in that episode, and that's
- 27:24Speaker 1: one of my favorite episodes ever. I uh, we bring
- 27:27Speaker 1: it up a lot because it was a pivotal moment
- 27:29Speaker 1: for me because it was the first one I got
- 27:30Speaker 1: to direct, and it was it was epic, and Donald
- 27:33Speaker 1: and I went on a quest that all took place
- 27:36Speaker 1: over in one night. You know, it's for budget. Most
- 27:38Speaker 1: of the time, we would you know, be confined to
- 27:40Speaker 1: the hospital with with going out a little bit here
- 27:41Speaker 1: or there. But you know, it's very expensive to bring
- 27:44Speaker 1: a full film crew out into the real world. And
- 27:47Speaker 1: and sometimes what Bill would do is he'd sort of
- 27:49Speaker 1: save up so we'd we'd have episodes that were mostly
- 27:51Speaker 1: contained to the world of the hospital, and then he'd
- 27:54Speaker 1: use the budget money he'd saved. Then we'd do like
- 27:56Speaker 1: a big ass one. That's why they'd be like the
- 27:58Speaker 1: Wizard of Oz or the Medieval Times or this one
- 28:01Speaker 1: with Heather where we were, you know, out all night long. Yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you, Shay, how I wanted to say,
- 28:08Speaker 1: just before we get into the episode. I really even
- 28:11Speaker 1: impressed by how hard you hustle and work. And you know,
- 28:15Speaker 1: we're both on Twitter. We're all on Twitter, and I
- 28:17Speaker 1: always see a lot of writers asking you for advice
- 28:19Speaker 1: and how do I do it. I'm just so impressed
- 28:22Speaker 1: with how hard you work. You write your ass off,
- 28:27Speaker 1: You then go off and you really talk to your
- 28:31Speaker 1: followers and say, hey, support the cause I'm here working
- 28:34Speaker 1: my ass off and I made a thing I think
- 28:37Speaker 1: you're gonna like. And I don't know, I just I've
- 28:39Speaker 1: always been impressed by how hard you work. And I
- 28:41Speaker 1: wonder if you, if you wanted to, could speak to
- 28:43Speaker 1: that for for anyone. It could be about anyone trying
- 28:46Speaker 1: to go after their dream, but you you particularly do
- 28:49Speaker 1: it with your writing.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 5: Well, I think that's that's probably like an extension of
- 28:53Speaker 5: several different things. We grew up, Like we live in
- 28:56Speaker 5: San Antonio. Now that I grew up like on the
- 28:57Speaker 5: other side of town, we were like real poor. Nobody
- 29:02Speaker 5: was like finishing school or anything like that. So like
- 29:05Speaker 5: that's always in the back of my head, like if
- 29:06Speaker 5: shit goes wrong or if I make like a few mistakes,
- 29:09Speaker 5: we could fall all the way back there. So that's
- 29:12Speaker 5: that's part of it. But also like in the in
- 29:14Speaker 5: the case of the the Scrubs thing, like this was
- 29:18Speaker 5: a thing that I was publishing independently. That is, you
- 29:21Speaker 5: weren't gonna find it in bookstores. The only way anybody
- 29:24Speaker 5: was going to find out about it was directly through
- 29:26Speaker 5: me at the at the start of it, you know.
- 29:28Speaker 5: So like I'm not gonna just sit there and cross
- 29:30Speaker 5: my fingers and hope somebody like bats their way into it. Yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 5: it's not you know, I'm trying to be like the
- 29:35Speaker 5: guys at the at the fucking mall that comes spraying
- 29:38Speaker 5: you with perfume, you know what I'm saying, Like I'm
- 29:42Speaker 5: gonna be that. I'm gonna be that kind of salesperson.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Or the guys in New York with the rap album
- 29:46Speaker 1: they always trying to get you to buy there.
- 29:48Speaker 2: There strong dude, that's the strongest hustle level because there's
- 29:50Speaker 2: a part of that hustle is also like strong arming
- 29:54Speaker 2: you too.
- 29:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, I always do it.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I always do it because I feel so bad. By
- 29:57Speaker 1: the time you've walked two blocks with them, you're like, dude,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I'm okay, okay.
- 30:01Speaker 5: You're out there slick. There's say they're smart. They're like, hey,
- 30:04Speaker 5: hold this for me real quick, and then you hold
- 30:05Speaker 5: it and they're like, all right, that's seven dollars. Like
- 30:07Speaker 5: what the fuck.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I wasn't even I wasn't even I wasn't even trying
- 30:14Speaker 2: to buy it, dude, I was.
- 30:15Speaker 1: But they're the best salesman, those guys, because by the
- 30:17Speaker 1: time you've walked a block of them, you're like, yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 1: I do need to hear this. You're right, that does
- 30:20Speaker 1: sound good.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Sometimes sometimes it's like dog, okay, just give me out.
- 30:28Speaker 1: But then they're like, Donald, come on, Donald, keep it real.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Donald. I seen that. This is what I hate because
- 30:32Speaker 2: I get a lot of this. I've seen you in
- 30:34Speaker 2: the movies. Dog, don't let me don't fucking let me down. Now,
- 30:39Speaker 2: I didn't let you down. Don't let me down. All right.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Well, I always think, you know, in my career, the
- 30:47Speaker 1: things I've done that you know, you have to put
- 30:50Speaker 1: yourself out there. You have to really you know, I've
- 30:53Speaker 1: write my own stuff. You get turned down a hundred times,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and you just got to keep going and keep fighting
- 30:58Speaker 1: for it and keep believing yourself. And I think that's
- 31:01Speaker 1: one of the reasons I really like what you say
- 31:02Speaker 1: and do on on Twitter, because you do a lot
- 31:04Speaker 1: of philanthropic things as well, but you're also someone who's
- 31:07Speaker 1: just like, I'm gonna do this on my own. Sometimes
- 31:09Speaker 1: sometimes a publisher will publish it, sometimes I'll publish it,
- 31:12Speaker 1: but like I'm always going to be doing my own hustle,
- 31:14Speaker 1: which I really appreciate.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you, Thank you very much.
- 31:17Speaker 1: So guys, we're getting to the episode. But go buy
- 31:20Speaker 1: Shay's book. It's called go to the website Sacred Heart
- 31:24Speaker 1: Gang dot com right correct. If you go to Sacred
- 31:28Speaker 1: If you go to Sacred Heart gang dot com, you
- 31:31Speaker 1: can buy the book. It's a PDF you can download.
- 31:33Speaker 1: It's twenty bucks. It's really worth it. It's amazing. I've
- 31:36Speaker 1: seen some people on online or are printing it out
- 31:39Speaker 1: and kind of making their own book out of it.
- 31:41Speaker 1: But support independent writers. He self published this with amazing
- 31:47Speaker 1: illustrations by Arturo Torres and I can't. I really recommend
- 31:51Speaker 1: it if you're a Scrubs fan. It's it's very, very entertaining,
- 31:55Speaker 1: and even the part's Donald skimmed.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Can we talk about the illustrations real quick illustration? They
- 32:01Speaker 2: kind of look like the New York Times. I'm not
- 32:03Speaker 2: the New York Times the Wall Street Journal. When they
- 32:07Speaker 2: draw the pictures like they look like when somebody sits
- 32:10Speaker 2: in front of you and poses and stuff like that,
- 32:12Speaker 2: they're very they're very lifelike, almost.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Like like a portrait.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of kind of like a portrait. Yeah, absolutely, yes,
- 32:19Speaker 2: especially the one with Brendan Fraser on the for the
- 32:22Speaker 2: title of the book. You know what I mean with
- 32:24Speaker 2: the inside when you get to that moment and you
- 32:27Speaker 2: even say at that moment, I didn't want to talk
- 32:28Speaker 2: about the you know, I hate talking about this, and
- 32:31Speaker 2: Zach you before we get into the store, I wanted
- 32:33Speaker 2: to say this. Also. It made also me watching the
- 32:37Speaker 2: episode again, it made it more impactful for me because one,
- 32:41Speaker 2: I knew how it was going to work out the
- 32:43Speaker 2: way you laid it out in the book. I knew
- 32:47Speaker 2: how it was going to end up, not only because
- 32:49Speaker 2: I was in it, but because of that but but
- 32:54Speaker 2: but it made it more impactful because what the way
- 32:57Speaker 2: you described all of what was happening, Uh, you really
- 33:02Speaker 2: told the story. Well is my point?
- 33:04Speaker 1: You know, Well, that's good writing when you're like when
- 33:06Speaker 1: when he's he's he's writing his thoughts on something we
- 33:09Speaker 1: were a part of. And I never had this experience before.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I mean, I guess occasionally when someone writes a good
- 33:15Speaker 1: review of something you've done, maybe it's similar. But you're
- 33:18Speaker 1: writing his thoughts on this moment, and it made the
- 33:21Speaker 1: moment for me as a part of it more impactful.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I thought that was really good.
- 33:25Speaker 2: And then even where and then even where it stems
- 33:27Speaker 2: from how you bring it back to the episode where
- 33:30Speaker 2: we lose you know, where one in three patients die
- 33:32Speaker 2: when they go into the hospital and everything like that,
- 33:35Speaker 2: how you connect the This is how Scrubs fucks you up.
- 33:38Speaker 2: They fuck you up by making you think you know
- 33:41Speaker 2: everything's all right, everything's all right, everything's all right, and
- 33:43Speaker 2: then just when you're feel like you're out of the
- 33:46Speaker 2: woods and you're safe, they drop the fucking hammer on
- 33:48Speaker 2: you. You know what I mean.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And by the way, this is how good Shaye's writing is.
- 33:52Speaker 1: He preempted Brendan Fraser being on this podcast. So I
- 33:57Speaker 1: want you to know, Shay that we and I'm telling
- 34:00Speaker 1: bouncing to the fans right here and now, that the
- 34:02Speaker 1: next episode will have Brendan Fraser on this podcast.
- 34:05Speaker 5: That's perfect. That's perfect.
- 34:07Speaker 1: So we want Shay's gonna come on and we're gonna
- 34:09Speaker 1: talk through Brennan Fraser's first episode. Then the next episode
- 34:13Speaker 1: we're gonna have Brennan Fraser come on and uh and
- 34:16Speaker 1: talk about it and then uh, well eventually I guess
- 34:19Speaker 1: it's season three, we'll get to uh, the big one.
- 34:22Speaker 1: That's a lot of people's favorite episode of all time.
- 34:25Speaker 1: This also when Brendan spoiler alert dies.
- 34:29Speaker 2: This also is kind of a it's precursor the right
- 34:33Speaker 2: word to that episode. Like this whole episode pretty much
- 34:37Speaker 2: is a dream, dude that.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I didn't even remember that by the way, you know what.
- 34:40Speaker 2: I mean foreshadowing, Yeah, a lot of foreshadowing, right I.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I I didn't remember that either. And I've truly went
- 34:48Speaker 2: on this journey with j D through this whole episode
- 34:52Speaker 2: of him trying to, you know, rationalize why this, oh
- 34:56Speaker 2: this is a false positive test. This test isn't it's
- 34:59Speaker 2: not to co They're fucking up all day.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:02Speaker 2: I even made a note, and I even made a note, Wow,
- 35:04Speaker 2: Sacred Heart is making a lot of mistakes.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Yeah. And also, by the way, first of all, I
- 35:10Speaker 1: was so fucking uncomfortable with Judy hitting on me, and
- 35:12Speaker 1: I didn't remember that at all, But because Donald's my
- 35:16Speaker 1: best friend in the world, I was nervous that his
- 35:18Speaker 1: TV wife.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Was hitting at me.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I was like, my stomach was getting uncomfortable. And then
- 35:24Speaker 1: I noticed a very subtle thing. I don't know if
- 35:26Speaker 1: you guys noticed this, because I'm just very aware of
- 35:28Speaker 1: the cinematography. I don't know if it was Larry Trilling
- 35:30Speaker 1: who directed by We mentioned that Bill Laurance wrote this
- 35:32Speaker 1: one and Larry Trilling, one of our favorite directors, directed it.
- 35:36Speaker 1: And there was this weird, sort of a very subtle
- 35:39Speaker 1: filter on the camera for that fantasy, that long dream sequence,
- 35:44Speaker 1: and I didn't remember that it was a dream sequence.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I remember, like, Jesus, why is this. It's usually a
- 35:49Speaker 1: filter you would reserve for a close up of a
- 35:52Speaker 1: woman of a certain age where you wanted to maybe
- 35:54Speaker 1: soften her wrinkles a little bit or her eyes. But
- 35:56Speaker 1: if you go back and look, it's on that whole sequence,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and I was kind of like, why is why is
- 36:01Speaker 1: this filter on? Like what? And then I was like
- 36:03Speaker 1: does this just look weird on my computer? Like what's
- 36:05Speaker 1: going on? And then when it was revealed that the
- 36:08Speaker 1: whole thing is a is a fantasy, I was like, Oh,
- 36:11Speaker 1: that was like a little subtle thing. You know, there's
- 36:13Speaker 1: lots of little subtle things either, but that's one thing
- 36:14Speaker 1: I noticed with the cinematography.
- 36:16Speaker 2: It makes you want to go back and watch it again.
- 36:20Speaker 5: It's a good show.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Show thank you, thank you.
- 36:23Speaker 4: Well.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I'm telling you when you get chased, when you guys
- 36:25Speaker 1: get Shay's book, you're gonna want to when you read
- 36:28Speaker 1: his essays, then you want to go back and go. Okay,
- 36:30Speaker 1: now I got to rewatch that episode with this with
- 36:33Speaker 1: this essay in mine.
- 36:34Speaker 6: All right, we're gonna go to break and we'll be
- 36:36Speaker 6: right back and back.
- 36:46Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna go into this episode, guys, all right.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I got one thing to say when we start off,
- 36:50Speaker 2: What the fuck? How do why do we have like
- 36:53Speaker 2: a cheese plate with a meat cheese meat plate the
- 36:56Speaker 2: size of like when you go to a party, you
- 37:00Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like, it's it's our cheese and
- 37:03Speaker 2: and and we and we got like the rouse version
- 37:07Speaker 2: of cheese and meat, like it's only cheddar. It's only
- 37:11Speaker 2: cheddar and American and white white cheddar, yellow cheddar and
- 37:15Speaker 2: American cheese. And it is the worst cheese, proast, beef, turkey.
- 37:21Speaker 1: It's cold cuts, rolled up what k.
- 37:27Speaker 2: And we're drinking wine with that, And this is our
- 37:30Speaker 2: and this is our night out from the hospital, is.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Our big fancy night and Judy and Carla says she
- 37:36Speaker 1: got a nice bottle of wine and then Donald's right,
- 37:38Speaker 1: if you freeze frame at five seconds on the plate
- 37:41Speaker 1: we're talking about, it's basically cubes of cheddar and rolled
- 37:44Speaker 1: up cold cuts. Well, maybe maybe the rationalization was that
- 37:51Speaker 1: we didn't know we were just we were like, we
- 37:53Speaker 1: were so busy being doctors. None of us are cooks,
- 37:55Speaker 1: and we're like, oh, we're gonna have like an adult night.
- 37:56Speaker 1: That's what we do. They have.
- 37:58Speaker 5: So this is a good example of one of the
- 38:01Speaker 5: one of the reasons I like to rewatch the show
- 38:03Speaker 5: so much, because every time you rewatch it, you're gonna
- 38:04Speaker 5: find like another little neat thing in there. So I
- 38:07Speaker 5: noticed that she's saying same same as y'all did when
- 38:10Speaker 5: I rewatched it yesterday and I was like, the only
- 38:12Speaker 5: person in this room who is upset about the situation
- 38:16Speaker 5: or the setup is Carla, Which makes sense because she
- 38:20Speaker 5: for that whole first season, second season, she's like the
- 38:23Speaker 5: adult in the room. Yeah, and the other and and
- 38:25Speaker 5: the other three are just sort of pretending to be adults,
- 38:28Speaker 5: so they think like, this is what is supposed to
- 38:30Speaker 5: look like.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And she.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Probably probably Robby Shaye, probably Turk and and UH and
- 38:36Speaker 1: JD were probably tasked with getting a nice place. We
- 38:41Speaker 1: went to fucking the supermarket. We're like, got one of
- 38:43Speaker 1: those round jobs. Meanwhile, she went to the liquor store
- 38:48Speaker 1: and bottom expensive.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Right, and then we still fucked it up for how about?
- 38:53Speaker 1: I mean, I feel bad talking like JD knowing so
- 38:57Speaker 1: much about what celebrities are are naked and what move movies,
- 39:00Speaker 1: but it was pretty funny when he's like frontal and touchus.
- 39:06Speaker 2: They have something like that on the Playboy. I mean,
- 39:09Speaker 2: never mind, this.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Is obviously before a website has existed, so it does
- 39:14Speaker 1: come up in the episode, but I don't think we
- 39:16Speaker 1: should actively advertise.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Them unless you want to hear it.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Let us know, Okay, hit up Donald on his Instagram on.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Hit me up on my Instagram, but you gotta find only.
- 39:28Speaker 2: I'll only respond if you follow.
- 39:30Speaker 1: But make sure you follow him because he's very upset
- 39:32Speaker 1: about his follower count. But if you really, if you
- 39:35Speaker 1: don't want to take the time to google it, just
- 39:36Speaker 1: ask Donald on Instagram.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Share you want some of this, man, we can. We
- 39:39Speaker 2: can hijack. We can hijack some of Zach's followers, man,
- 39:42Speaker 2: and get them on my followers.
- 39:45Speaker 1: He's blowing up.
- 39:46Speaker 2: What did Shay share some of yours with me? Brother?
- 39:48Speaker 1: Yeah? All right, one day one twelve, I was kind
- 39:53Speaker 1: of taken, and I think this comes up in your essay.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Say if I'm not mistaken, But we finally see Cox
- 39:58Speaker 1: like someone. Yeah right, You know he seems that he
- 40:01Speaker 1: seems to never like anybody or at least be snarky
- 40:05Speaker 1: with anyone and everyone. This is this is sort of
- 40:08Speaker 1: the first time that he's really uh, we see how
- 40:11Speaker 1: much he genuinely is no bullshit. Has a friend.
- 40:15Speaker 5: Yeah, that's really It's really like an interesting creation of
- 40:17Speaker 5: a character is to put somebody in in his orbit
- 40:21Speaker 5: who just sort of takes away all of his like
- 40:24Speaker 5: protective armor immediately, Like he has another friend later on
- 40:27Speaker 5: the show, Michael Boltman's character Ron and when he shows
- 40:30Speaker 5: up and they're like clearly close friends, but but at
- 40:33Speaker 5: the same time they're like poking each other in the
- 40:35Speaker 5: eye every once in a while with something. But Brendan
- 40:37Speaker 5: Fraser's character Ben is the only time we see him
- 40:39Speaker 5: where he is just wide open and like just having
- 40:41Speaker 5: a good old time and he loves Yeah.
- 40:44Speaker 1: It's it really mirrors Jad and it's like his turk
- 40:48Speaker 1: in a way, just solely in the fact that like
- 40:52Speaker 1: they're on you know, they're hugging, and they're and they're
- 40:54Speaker 1: joking about hugging and and they're just very they're being
- 40:59Speaker 1: playing silly games, the thing with the card on their head,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and they're just like they're unabashedly themselves.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Yeah, all of the things that doctor Cox says annoys
- 41:07Speaker 5: him about JD. Yeah, the things that Brent like he
- 41:10Speaker 5: talks in the voices, he's very affectionate, and I'm saying
- 41:13Speaker 5: like like, oh, this is like you begin to understand.
- 41:16Speaker 5: This is like why he has such a fondness for
- 41:19Speaker 5: JD is because he reminds him of this character.
- 41:21Speaker 1: That's great, Ja, I really love that analysis, and I
- 41:24Speaker 1: didn't see it but it's funny. I was watching Brendan
- 41:27Speaker 1: Fraser's choice in this character for the first time in
- 41:30Speaker 1: twenty years, and he is playing it very goofy and silly,
- 41:33Speaker 1: and it's very JD like. And it's funny that you
- 41:36Speaker 1: say that that I never thought of it like that.
- 41:39Speaker 1: It's like you're seeing even though Cox has to keep
- 41:42Speaker 1: it down because he has to be Cox to JD,
- 41:46Speaker 1: there is the there must be some aspect of JD
- 41:50Speaker 1: that reminds him of his good buddy.
- 41:51Speaker 5: You know, there's no question about it, There's no question.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I like when I got to the bar at one
- 41:56Speaker 1: twenty three when I go neat Hug. Yeah, what a
- 42:03Speaker 1: fucking tool, Neat Hug.
- 42:05Speaker 2: This is something that kind of bugged me the whole
- 42:09Speaker 2: time we made this show, but later on hindsight, being
- 42:12Speaker 2: twenty twenty nowadays, it's I wish, I'm so happy that
- 42:17Speaker 2: this happened. But Brendan Fraser brings a camera into the
- 42:20Speaker 2: episode and it's a polaroid camera, old school polaroid, old
- 42:25Speaker 2: school polaroid camera. And I'm not sure if we were
- 42:29Speaker 2: doing this before or if this is where it started,
- 42:33Speaker 2: but because of this moment right here, it's like I
- 42:36Speaker 2: have polaroids from you know what I mean.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I can't answer this.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Okay, let's let's let's get into it, because I I
- 42:45Speaker 2: was wondering, we have all of these memories on celluloid
- 42:49Speaker 2: because of someone bringing a camera, and then it became an.
- 42:54Speaker 1: All began with this.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Is this where it began?
- 42:56Speaker 1: Yeah, So here's the thing. Krista Miller and I are
- 42:58Speaker 1: both photographers as our hobby, and we both are camera geeks.
- 43:02Speaker 1: We love new cameras, we love old cameras, will like
- 43:04Speaker 1: send each other eBay listings of cameras. She's a really
- 43:08Speaker 1: talented photographer and I like to think I'm not too
- 43:10Speaker 1: bad myself. When Brendan Fraser came in, this was his
- 43:14Speaker 1: real hobby, shooting with these old school polaroids, as you
- 43:17Speaker 1: guys see in the movie, the kind of polaroid film
- 43:21Speaker 1: not that just comes out automatically. You pull it out
- 43:23Speaker 1: and then you got it's like shake it like a
- 43:24Speaker 1: polaroid picture of these you actually did have to wait
- 43:26Speaker 1: for a minute for them to cook and then you'd
- 43:28Speaker 1: peel it off and then'd be a beautiful a shot.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And this camera that he's shooting with was actually Brendan's
- 43:35Speaker 1: and he brought it in, and of course, and he
- 43:38Speaker 1: was taking pictures. All the pictures you see at the
- 43:40Speaker 1: end of the episode in that tin that he has,
- 43:43Speaker 1: we're all shot by him over the course of his
- 43:45Speaker 1: week hanging out with us. And then Christa and I got,
- 43:49Speaker 1: of course, got so into it. We're like, oh my god,
- 43:51Speaker 1: we got to get one of those. Where do we
- 43:52Speaker 1: buy him? And then over the years, Donald that you
- 43:56Speaker 1: have a lot of polaroid pictures, because I have a
- 43:58Speaker 1: bunch of these cameras now right, and I'm sure I'm
- 44:01Speaker 1: sure Chris has given you some too, because she does too,
- 44:04Speaker 1: but the bulk of the ones you have, I'm sure.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I got super into it, and I was going on
- 44:08Speaker 1: eBay and buying all these old cameras. That's why. That's
- 44:10Speaker 1: that's it all started with.
- 44:12Speaker 2: This, Okay, So all right, that's what I was. That's
- 44:14Speaker 2: what I was running because it got ridiculous too at
- 44:16Speaker 2: some point. At some point, it was like a battle
- 44:18Speaker 2: between everybody who took pictures on the fucking show to
- 44:22Speaker 2: bring in their new toy, you know what I mean,
- 44:24Speaker 2: whether it was a lika or a cannon or a
- 44:27Speaker 2: fucking or a point. This is the this is the
- 44:30Speaker 2: Rolls Royce of Point and Shoot or this is the.
- 44:35Speaker 1: How do you think I feel when you're talking about
- 44:37Speaker 1: your new animation gadget? But listen, I it wasn't.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I don't go to you, dude. Man, I just fucking
- 44:44Speaker 2: got a c stand. Man, I'm really excited. I don't
- 44:46Speaker 2: hit you up and do that ship.
- 44:48Speaker 1: No, But on your Instagram you post shit like I'm doing.
- 44:50Speaker 1: All this is on the ones and I just got
- 44:52Speaker 1: this new gadget called l R two five nine. You
- 44:57Speaker 1: think I give a funk how you're animating. Just show
- 45:02Speaker 1: me to show me to finish product. No, but he's right.
- 45:08Speaker 1: In addition to Christ and I, there's also a huge
- 45:10Speaker 1: camera department and and uh and with all sort of
- 45:13Speaker 1: you know, everyone in the camera department loves cameras. So yeah,
- 45:15Speaker 1: there was a lot of camera talk on the set.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I'm sorry we annoyed you with that.
- 45:19Speaker 2: It wasn't annoying. I look back at it now and
- 45:21Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for it because I have all of
- 45:23Speaker 2: these memories captured.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yes, now I want to know why JD, who's we've
- 45:27Speaker 1: established as a very good doctor, all beit young, is
- 45:29Speaker 1: passing out at a nail in someone's hand. I mean,
- 45:32Speaker 1: hasn't he seen far with things?
- 45:34Speaker 2: That ship is grossed though, no matter how you look
- 45:36Speaker 2: at it, man, really how you for some reason he's.
- 45:40Speaker 1: He's fucking cleaned out people's rectums.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yeah, but when the ship's still in you, that's scary, man,
- 45:45Speaker 2: because it has to come out. And when it comes
- 45:48Speaker 2: Look you see in the movies, all right, you ready, one, two, three,
- 45:52Speaker 2: and then they pull it and the person it's like
- 45:58Speaker 2: that was the first thing I thought about, like they
- 46:00Speaker 2: got to take that ship out.
- 46:01Speaker 1: It didn't cross your It didn't cross your mind. Well
- 46:03Speaker 1: as I understand it. Being a fake doctor, you don't
- 46:06Speaker 1: want to pull it out before you get to the er,
- 46:08Speaker 1: because then that's what that thing is, stopping the blood
- 46:10Speaker 1: from coming out.
- 46:11Speaker 2: In some cases, yes, in some cases.
- 46:14Speaker 1: By the way, I'm gonna take this as medical. Please google,
- 46:17Speaker 1: Please google the right thing to do.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Listen, because in some movies when dude gets shot with
- 46:21Speaker 2: the bow and arrow or something like that, or or
- 46:24Speaker 2: or or get stabbed with a knife. Yeah, and they
- 46:26Speaker 2: got to make the escape there. You know, it's the
- 46:29Speaker 2: eye cont it's the close eye contact and everything. They're
- 46:32Speaker 2: looking face to face and they're like all right, you ready,
- 46:36Speaker 2: I'm ready on three one two, you shut on three.
- 46:46Speaker 1: That's true. Well, anyway, I thought it was surprising that
- 46:50Speaker 1: there's the episode begins with JD passing out and a
- 46:53Speaker 1: nail in someone's hand, like he literally faints. He literally
- 46:57Speaker 1: faints like a yeah, like a person in old movies faints.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Right like be still yeah, like like yeah, back of
- 47:05Speaker 2: hand the veples.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Now there's a real thing in hospitals, you know, mix
- 47:11Speaker 1: ups are are I mean, they've they've taken all these
- 47:13Speaker 1: steps in the intervening years between this show and twenty
- 47:17Speaker 1: twenty to make sure that fuck ups are very, very
- 47:22Speaker 1: very rare. I just started watching this show on Netflix.
- 47:25Speaker 1: There's a documentary show if you're into real doctor situations
- 47:28Speaker 1: called Lenox Hill, where they're following around real doctors, and
- 47:31Speaker 1: I just noticed that they go in to do brain
- 47:33Speaker 1: surgery on someone and there's those whole process where they're
- 47:36Speaker 1: like they're like, we'll be doing this on the right
- 47:38Speaker 1: side of the brain. Does anyone hear right? Raise your
- 47:40Speaker 1: hand if you heard right? And there's this whole system
- 47:42Speaker 1: in place now where the nurses are like I heard right,
- 47:45Speaker 1: I heard right, I heard right, and they're like sign
- 47:47Speaker 1: he signs his name on the woman's skull before the surgery. Like,
- 47:51Speaker 1: my point is, everyone in the medical community who listens
- 47:54Speaker 1: to the show is laughing at me because I'm explaining
- 47:55Speaker 1: it so horribly. But it made me think of that
- 47:58Speaker 1: because there's so many systems in place now to make
- 48:00Speaker 1: sure fuck ups happen less because it is a thing
- 48:02Speaker 1: in hospitals.
- 48:04Speaker 2: But it's also really funny how they figure out the
- 48:06Speaker 2: mess up was happening, you know what I mean, Wait
- 48:08Speaker 2: a second, I imagine that this guy is Jewish, Yeah,
- 48:12Speaker 2: of course he is. Then why isn't his penis circumcised?
- 48:15Speaker 2: And then Todd runs in, Hey, doctor Wynn wants to
- 48:19Speaker 2: know if there's some sort of mix up because our
- 48:21Speaker 2: appendix surgery doesn't have an appendix. And then he walks
- 48:25Speaker 2: into the room and he's like, can you believe what
- 48:27Speaker 2: the whoa it's going on here? That shit made me
- 48:32Speaker 2: laugh so but by the.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Way, I laughed so hard, But I did it understand something?
- 48:38Speaker 1: I mean, I laughed so hard that. But isn't just
- 48:40Speaker 1: an uncircumcised phoenis? Why is Todd? Why is Todd so
- 48:44Speaker 1: freaked out by uncircumcised He's.
- 48:46Speaker 2: He's not freaked out by it. But what it is
- 48:48Speaker 2: is it's it's you know, the person's covered in a
- 48:51Speaker 2: complete uh a cheet right, and it's covering their whole
- 48:55Speaker 2: body and the only thing sticking out and there's a
- 48:56Speaker 2: big light shining on it. Obviously is this dude's I
- 49:00Speaker 2: can't and his balls and his balls? Yeah.
- 49:04Speaker 1: But by the way, Donald, if you if you fans
- 49:06Speaker 1: are listening, go back. You can see when when Rob
- 49:08Speaker 1: comes in and says, WHOA, what is going on here?
- 49:11Speaker 1: You can see Donald under his mask start to laugh
- 49:15Speaker 1: and like, Donald, I can see you biting your fucking cheek.
- 49:22Speaker 1: That ship was hilarious.
- 49:23Speaker 2: He's fucking dude, man. I forgot how I say this
- 49:27Speaker 2: over and over again, Robert Macio, Holy shit, I forgot
- 49:32Speaker 2: how funny he is. Man. And we used to we
- 49:36Speaker 2: used to fucking fuck with him all the time and oh,
- 49:38Speaker 2: let's go run line and everything. But he fucking crushes
- 49:41Speaker 2: it every time.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Every time, dude, that's the funniest line on the show. WHOA,
- 49:46Speaker 1: what is going on here?
- 49:48Speaker 2: Is going on here?
- 49:49Speaker 1: Even in my brain I was thinking, like, well, why
- 49:51Speaker 1: is he so surprised to see vetus? But Donald oh Man?
- 49:55Speaker 1: Then I looked at Donald and I know that look
- 49:57Speaker 1: better than anyone that you're lucky by that. He's like,
- 50:02Speaker 1: he's like his face is like scrutching.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Up like this. Nicole Sullivan's back. Christain Miller's back on
- 50:12Speaker 2: this episode.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Christ's back.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Yeah, the Nicole Sullivan's story, you know, uh, Shay, you
- 50:20Speaker 2: could speak on this also. This was one of those
- 50:22Speaker 2: things where you throw her in there just so you can,
- 50:26Speaker 2: just so the audience remembers, Okay, there's this character, and
- 50:30Speaker 2: we have plans for her later on and to make
- 50:33Speaker 2: this connection, to make to make what happens to her,
- 50:36Speaker 2: to make you feel it more. We're gonna introduce her
- 50:39Speaker 2: on some silly shit just so you're comfortable, like, oh,
- 50:42Speaker 2: this is just somebody who comes into the space, into
- 50:44Speaker 2: the universe for Elliott to make funny jokes with and
- 50:48Speaker 2: you kind of don't realize, Okay, at the end of this,
- 50:51Speaker 2: something's bad's gonna happen, even though we're laying out the crumbs,
- 50:54Speaker 2: you know what I mean, somethings you know.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Yeah, she talks about that in his book actually with
- 50:59Speaker 1: the Brendan arc of it, all about how Bill wasn't
- 51:02Speaker 1: was was totally not afraid to play the long game
- 51:04Speaker 1: with these people, right say, like like they laid the
- 51:07Speaker 1: foundation for Brennan and then that episode is now until
- 51:09Speaker 1: two years later.
- 51:11Speaker 5: You know, So that's the like, the one question I
- 51:14Speaker 5: wanted to make sure I asked when I came on
- 51:15Speaker 5: here was when y'all are doing that stuff with with
- 51:18Speaker 5: with the the Cole Sullivan character or with the renin
- 51:21Speaker 5: Frage character, do you know ahead of time? Like okay,
- 51:24Speaker 5: and in fucking three years, this is when we're gonna
- 51:27Speaker 5: get rid of no of the you just sort.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Of we should throw it to Bill. Let's throw that.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's let's throw the Brennan one to Bill,
- 51:34Speaker 1: because that's I was thinking about doing that as well, Bill,
- 51:37Speaker 1: when you had Brendan on in season one for these
- 51:40Speaker 1: two awesome episodes, we have Shae Soronald here, and of
- 51:43Speaker 1: course Bill knows who you are, Shay, because he wanted
- 51:45Speaker 1: to I see him hitting you up on Twitter as well. Bill,
- 51:50Speaker 1: was was it your intention that you would kind of
- 51:52Speaker 1: play the long game and then bring Brennan back in
- 51:55Speaker 1: season three for the episode Everybody Loves at the Funeral?
- 51:59Speaker 1: Was that on your are this far out and because
- 52:01Speaker 1: we're because you know we're talking about also Nicole Sullivan character,
- 52:05Speaker 1: and how one of the things you did really well
- 52:07Speaker 1: in Scrubs was not be afraid to play the long
- 52:09Speaker 1: game with these characters. But first, well, Bill, please don't
- 52:12Speaker 1: don't don't.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Please don't do the s eight.
- 52:15Speaker 7: Hey, guys, I guess we'll just continue this relationship in
- 52:19Speaker 7: which you only reach out to me when you need me.
- 52:23Speaker 7: And I'm supposed to.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Feel good about that. Now I do feel good.
- 52:28Speaker 7: Look, Brendan, he's an old family friend, a good friend
- 52:32Speaker 7: of Christ's. And when we brought him on, initially we thought, wow,
- 52:37Speaker 7: that's back when we kind of bring guest stars on,
- 52:39Speaker 7: get to know him and kill him. But we thought
- 52:41Speaker 7: it was kind of a good enough thing to give him,
- 52:45Speaker 7: uh leukemia and you know, kind of see doctor Cox
- 52:50Speaker 7: rise to the occasion and deal with it. The first
- 52:52Speaker 7: episode is based on a short story called Occurrence at
- 52:54Speaker 7: al Creek Bridge by Ambrose Beers. If anybody wanted to
- 52:57Speaker 7: look that up. Second episode, it's just cool excuse to
- 53:01Speaker 7: use the worthless peons, Ted's band and and all you guys.
- 53:05Speaker 7: And Brennan was so good when he agreed to come back. Uh,
- 53:09Speaker 7: it was perfect because we were able to do you
- 53:12Speaker 7: know that sixth sense homage? So we always knew we
- 53:16Speaker 7: wanted to kill him, but we hadn't planned. Uh we
- 53:19Speaker 7: had hoped, but hadn't planned for him to come back,
- 53:21Speaker 7: and when that happened, it's one of our favorite episodes ever.
- 53:24Speaker 1: All Right, we were we have a fan that we're
- 53:26Speaker 1: gonna take new commercial and then we come back.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Do we ever go to fan and then go to
- 53:31Speaker 2: commercial after the fan? How come we always got to
- 53:34Speaker 2: go to commercial before the fan? Is this like it?
- 53:37Speaker 2: Because and it's a seg it's a segment thing. I
- 53:40Speaker 2: got it, it's a segment thing.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's when Joel we first started making
- 53:44Speaker 1: the show. Joel had a very organized list of the
- 53:47Speaker 1: way the show would go, and since all we do
- 53:49Speaker 1: is ramble all over the fucking place, we just occasionally
- 53:52Speaker 1: asked her if we should commerce.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I know, it's always like it's always a tease though
- 53:57Speaker 2: for the it's always a tease for the people listening
- 53:59Speaker 2: to the podcast. Oh we've got a listener here. Let's
- 54:02Speaker 2: you know what, we should probably go to fucking commercial.
- 54:04Speaker 1: But I think that I think that you know, on
- 54:06Speaker 1: real TV shows and radio shows, you want to you
- 54:09Speaker 1: want the audience to stay on the line, right on,
- 54:11Speaker 1: right on the fishing line. When we come back, we're
- 54:14Speaker 1: gonna have an exciting caller.
- 54:16Speaker 2: But we don't do it that way. We never do
- 54:18Speaker 2: it that way.
- 54:18Speaker 1: We always try it that way. Let's try and sell
- 54:20Speaker 1: it this way. You want to try and sell it
- 54:22Speaker 1: like pretendant, they might change the channel or switch to.
- 54:24Speaker 2: The No, no, no, no, no, no, no no no.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Don't you touch that down. When we come back, we'll
- 54:28Speaker 2: have that call.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Don't you touch that down. We're back in two and two. Oh, hi, guys,
- 54:42Speaker 1: what's up? Gentlemen? It's Dylan and who else is Cam?
- 54:47Speaker 2: Dylan and came there's.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Your official Oprah voice. Guys. That's the price you get
- 54:52Speaker 1: for making on the show. You get an Oprah voice.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Intro Dylan and Cam.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Where are you guys at It looks like you're like
- 54:58Speaker 2: in a bunker underground. Yeah.
- 55:02Speaker 3: Yeah, we have a little bar area in our basement.
- 55:04Speaker 3: We're kind of hunkered down right here, but we're in
- 55:06Speaker 3: a lacrosse with gods.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Okay, Wisconsin in the house.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Noise. Well, welcome guys to the show. We we we
- 55:13Speaker 1: have Shay Serrano joining us, who's written an awesome book
- 55:16Speaker 1: on Scrubs and it's incredible, uh, best selling author, and
- 55:20Speaker 1: he probably knows more about scrubs than Donald and I.
- 55:22Speaker 1: But you can well that's because Donald smokes a lot
- 55:26Speaker 1: of weed. But you can ask us any question or
- 55:28Speaker 1: maybe you're off? Are you off this hour?
- 55:30Speaker 2: Though? Do you mean did I smoke today?
- 55:32Speaker 1: No, because there was a couple of podcasts ago you
- 55:34Speaker 1: said you were taking a break from weed, and I
- 55:36Speaker 1: wonder if that's stuck.
- 55:38Speaker 2: No, that didn't, didn't take didn't that night. That night
- 55:44Speaker 2: I went back to the well. Uh.
- 55:46Speaker 1: He always tries to brag Shay. He's like, yeah, I'm
- 55:49Speaker 1: off weed. I'm like for how long? He's like an hour?
- 55:52Speaker 5: How it starts, that's how it starts. One step at a.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Time, one step at a time.
- 55:56Speaker 1: All right, Dylan and Cam, what's up? What's your question? Guys? Welcome?
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yeah, good to be here.
- 56:01Speaker 3: Man, really big fans and a really huge fan of
- 56:04Speaker 3: too nice.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Yeah great, you guys, do you guys up the.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Printed it out for you for you listeners? They held
- 56:16Speaker 1: up Shay's book on the office. Uh, and they had
- 56:19Speaker 1: printed it out and binded it. So these guys are
- 56:21Speaker 1: real fans.
- 56:22Speaker 3: Oh I love Yeah, I love. She probably my favorite author.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you? Oh wow nice Shay? All right, a
- 56:31Speaker 1: question for I guess it's probably gonna be for Shay.
- 56:33Speaker 1: But Donald and I are here too.
- 56:37Speaker 3: So I guess it's you guys can to hop in
- 56:39Speaker 3: with us too. But for Shay. So you've written obviously,
- 56:43Speaker 3: Conference through five Minutes. For the Office, you've written, where
- 56:46Speaker 3: do you think we are? For Scrubs? Is there another
- 56:49Speaker 3: show that you've been thinking about? Or is there maybe
- 56:51Speaker 3: one that maybe Donald or Dak would really like to
- 56:54Speaker 3: kind of see from you as well?
- 56:56Speaker 1: Oh that's good, I like I like my part, But
- 56:57Speaker 1: you go for a show.
- 56:59Speaker 5: There hasn't been one that I've thought of yet. Usually
- 57:01Speaker 5: whenever I'm working on one of these, people will like
- 57:03Speaker 5: start tweeting me, Oh, do the wire? Do arrested development?
- 57:07Speaker 5: Do you sons of Anarchy or Madmen or whatever? But
- 57:11Speaker 5: most of these things just sort of happen organically. I've
- 57:14Speaker 5: been I've been watching Scrubs for so long. I've seen
- 57:17Speaker 5: it so many times. It was like, well, you know,
- 57:19Speaker 5: let me let me do something with all of the
- 57:22Speaker 5: times I've watched it, And then it becomes like, oh,
- 57:24Speaker 5: I was actually just working hard all of that time
- 57:26Speaker 5: instead of just sitting around watching TV. You know what
- 57:28Speaker 5: I'm saying.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a nice way to spend it. You're like,
- 57:30Speaker 1: You're like, I wasn't wasting those hours. I was writing
- 57:33Speaker 1: a book.
- 57:34Speaker 5: Yeah exactly. I mean it's like one hundred and eighty
- 57:36Speaker 5: something episodes of the show you watched, pot ninety hours
- 57:40Speaker 5: of TV that you've seen four or five times all
- 57:42Speaker 5: the way through. But yeah, usually, just if a show
- 57:46Speaker 5: will grab a hold of me, then I then I'll
- 57:48Speaker 5: write about it. But I haven't. I don't have any
- 57:49Speaker 5: plans right now to do to do another one?
- 57:51Speaker 1: All right, I have a nice Which one do you want?
- 57:53Speaker 2: Which one do you want him to do?
- 57:54Speaker 1: I was just well, the whole time he was talking,
- 57:56Speaker 1: I was half listening and half thinking. I think, I think.
- 58:00Speaker 1: I don't know if you watch the show, Shay Donald,
- 58:02Speaker 1: I don't think watches it.
- 58:03Speaker 5: But I really loved Atlanta as great, and I think it's.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Ripe for analysis because it's got so many trippy storylines
- 58:12Speaker 1: and so much social commentary, and I just I just
- 58:15Speaker 1: think it's incredibly done.
- 58:17Speaker 5: Yeah that's a really that's a really good one. But
- 58:19Speaker 5: they're not done yet. It doesn't they're done. Yeah, you
- 58:22Speaker 5: gotta wait till you get.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Now The Wire. A lot of people say The Wire
- 58:24Speaker 1: is I have to admit I only watched season one,
- 58:27Speaker 1: so please don't yell at me. But a lot of
- 58:29Speaker 1: people think that's the greatest TV show of all time?
- 58:32Speaker 1: Is that? Is that on the top of your list?
- 58:34Speaker 5: Yeah, that's absolutely on there, The Wire? Breaking Bad Soprano, Like,
- 58:37Speaker 5: you know all of the all of the main ones.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Right, I've never seen any of these shows.
- 58:42Speaker 5: You haven't. No, you've never seen You've never seen Breaking Bad.
- 58:45Speaker 1: No, No, you only watched wat We only watched the finale.
- 58:48Speaker 1: It's the only episode you ever saw.
- 58:50Speaker 2: So here's my thing. Here's my thing. I have a
- 58:53Speaker 2: hard time investing in shows because what happens is either
- 58:56Speaker 2: they get canceled or they disappoint you in the end. Right,
- 58:59Speaker 2: that's my that's my issue with things. I hate when
- 59:03Speaker 2: you know something, there's a cliffhanger at the end of
- 59:05Speaker 2: the season, and then the show gets canceled and you
- 59:09Speaker 2: don't get to finish, you know, and then.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Surely there's a series. What's a series that you watched
- 59:14Speaker 1: like that, you just loved all of it?
- 59:16Speaker 2: The Clone Wars, it's got to be Star Wars.
- 59:20Speaker 1: It's only Star Wars.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that that that well yeah, you know,
- 59:25Speaker 2: uh that.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Was anything non Star Wars.
- 59:29Speaker 2: No, No, Like you know, Bill Lawrence used to say
- 59:34Speaker 2: it all the time, and it's so true. You you
- 59:37Speaker 2: tell people when you when people meet you and they say,
- 59:40Speaker 2: I'm such a huge fan of your show. Nine out
- 59:43Speaker 2: of the ten times, they've only seen it like a
- 59:45Speaker 2: handful of times, you know what I mean, and haven't
- 59:47Speaker 2: seen it more than that. And so I fall in
- 59:53Speaker 2: that category. If I were to see Brian and Aaron,
- 59:58Speaker 2: it would be like, I'm such a huge I was
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: such a huge fan of Breaking Bad. I only saw
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: the final episode.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I wouldn't let you admit that.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: I already told them it's all over the air now
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: that somebody's gonna come back to him and say that
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: shit now, but you know what I mean, Like, like
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: I watch every now and then I'll check out a
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: CW show, right, Like I love superhero movies, right, so
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I'll check out The Flash, or I'll check out Legends
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: of Tomorrow, or I'll check out you know, Arrow, And
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: I've only seen, like, you know, out of all of them,
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: I've seen maybe you know thirty of them total, like
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: of all of the show's total. But when I see
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: the actors and stuff in it, I genuinely do love
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: what I have seen, So I'll be like, I'm such
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: a fan of your show, even though I've only seen
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: each show.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: So the message for all those actors is that Donald
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: is totally bullshitting you when.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: I'm telling the honest to goodness truth like a Supergirl,
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: I have seen that time?
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: You like it? What about small about Smallville?
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I only saw that show a couple of times also,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: and I like, you know, because Angel which one was
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Dark Angels one with Jessica album, I didn't watch that one.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I didn't watch and I never to.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: You also used didn't you used to watch? There was
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: a sci fi show.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: You Battlestar Galactica. I take it back, if you do Battlestar, Yeah,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: you should do Battlestar Galacta.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I ever watched Battlestar Galactic.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: There we go, Thank you, Zach. Thanks, I remember, I remember, I.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Got, I got, was searching my brain for you. I
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: was like, I know there was one sci fi show
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you actually watched that wasn't a Star Wars animated cartoon.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: I remember I got into an argument with my uh
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: girlfriend at the time because I thought she uh taped
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: over my Battlestar Galactica episode.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I remember, did you watch that one? Shay?
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: I did not watch Battlestar.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: You guys, Dylan Cam did you watch I'll start?
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Well do you guys like it?
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Yeah? I might? Super big and like sci fi by
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: that one I was was pretty I think.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: As far as h like sci fi shows that people
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: have liked. That's one of those ones everyone says was
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: canceled too soon, and people.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Katie Saccoff is a She's a g if you ask me,
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Like, she's one of those
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: action heroes that is a good Like she's straight up
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: as a true action star who deserves the opportunity to
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: carry some project. They say she's going to be in
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: The Mandalorian this upcoming season as a Bokatan, which would
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: be really fucking dope.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: My grandmother used to live in Boca Rattan.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Right, Well, these characters, these these characters all travel from.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Does it take place at an old Jewish community center.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: And can eat as Joel?
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Do you watch Battle Starry Galactica because you like the
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: sci fi stuff.
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: Yeah, I came very very late to Battlestar Galactica. I'm
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: currently in the middle of season one but really loving it.
- 1:03:03Speaker 8: It's amazing, It's excellent, good writing. If you're a Star
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: Trek and or Star Wars fan, you'll probably find something
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: like in Battlestar Galactica.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: All right, So guys, to finish that question off, do
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: you have a show that that like you would love
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Shay to one day do a book.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: About each We're gonna ask both of you each.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Yeah, first, okay, I would love Breaking Bad personally. Breaking
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: That would be really sick. I think it's a really
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: really good show. Yeah, that would probably be my top tice.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Maybe Parks and Rack would kind of be a more
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: fun one. I'm more lighthearted, but but I would probably
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: say Breaking That would be a really cool one.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: All right, how about you, I've always been.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: A hush fan of the show, Dexter. I would love
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: to see you do that.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: In my opinion, and show start and then kind of
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: drop cop right to.
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: Finish where I think Breaking Bad is better in the series,
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: but I think That's best is better. Yeah, I think
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: I think that's that's I kind of fall in line
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: with Donalds of kind of a slight disaployment at the
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: very end.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: But yeah, I was gonna say that's one. That's another
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: show where I only watched the last episode and I
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: was like, what the.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Strange I've heard.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: That bulls Shady when Harry Mattseelly.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: It's a totally different example.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Do you remember when Billy Crystal when she's asking when
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: when she when he tells her how how dark he
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: is and he's like, I read the end of the
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: book before I start. That's me with movies. That's me
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: with television shows that everybody's train But that's me with
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: television shows that everybody's like, you should watch this, you
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: know what show you would like, You would like this
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: show now.
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: But you miss you missed like the whole build up
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: of everything, like you can't. Okay, we're talking about Nicole
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Sullivan's character. Yeah, yes, in the in the season eight finale,
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: when jad is doing the walk down the hallway and
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: she pops up out of the out of the thing
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: and she's like, there you are, and you get so
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: fucking excite, Like there's like a real jolt of joy
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: in your body when you see that. If you haven't
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: watched all the other episodes. You don't understand what that
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: you think, this is just a person who happens to
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: be you can't just watch.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: So then that makes the final episode of Scrubs a
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: good episode. It's a great, fantastic because the Breaking Bad,
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: the Breaking Bad finale is a fucking movie. All I
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: needed to know was that this dude, Walter White, was
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: this freak.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let the super.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Why why why?
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Because you you you will get so I mean, let's
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: just take Breaking back because I feel like it's a
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: show that everyone listening to this problem.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: That last that last right, But that last episode is
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: a movie. It's a fucking movie, a movie like like
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: it's just like the twenty sixth Hour with Edward Norton
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: where he finally where he's a board. I forget the
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: name of the damn movie.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: But you can forget how many hours. There's a lot
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: There's a lot of them. But he fucking uh, he's
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: a drug dealer who goes to jail. You don't need
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: to know everything that goes on before the movie with
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: the movie starts, you're invested the minute he gets caught
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: out there after you know what I mean, and is
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: going to jail, and it's the end of the story.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: It's his run.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: But you can watch that movie and understand all of
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: the parts by the time you get to the end
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: of it. If you only watch the finale of Breaking Bad,
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: like you kind of you don't understand why it's so
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: important that he saves Jesse in that moment. You're like,
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: I don't get it. Why did he save this one
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: kid and kill everybody else. I don't understand why he
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: had to walk through the meth lab the last time.
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: I don't understand why they play this particular song. Like,
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: you're missing so much of this thing that you got
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: to watch the rest of the episode. You gotta watch it,
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: all right. Wait, let's ask the guys if they have
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: another question. Go ahead, guys, do you have another one?
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: So, you guys have mentioned earlier in the podcast series
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: that you guys just to be roommates, right, Yes.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: We were roommates for a year, I mean for summer,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: for summer, summer for a summer.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: So maybe I'm kind of stirring the pod a little
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: bit here, but what was from of your biggest pet
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: peeves living with.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: The So I got to the loft. First, we rented
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: this loft for the summer. And the loft it was enormous.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: It was like your dream loft in terms of size,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: but it didn't wasn't really that set up in terms
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: of like two nice bedrooms, two nice bathrooms. So I
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: claimed the nice bedroom because you know I got there first, right,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: that's what you doing.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Then I gave Donald what was technically the second bedroom,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: but it had a washer and drying ron, and he goes,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: who do you think I am? Benson? And for you
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: guys are young, you don't know. But Benson was a
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: show where.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Benson Benson was a show. Robert Gione played Benson, and
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: he was he worked for the mayor. He was an
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: assistant to the mayor.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: He was staying like pretty much like who do you think?
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: I worked for him?
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: And Benson was the one that pretty much ran the
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: country while because the mayor was this you know, bumbling Uh,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: well he wasn't a bumbling mayor, but he was. Benson
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: was the one that handled everything right. He handled the house,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: he handled everything. Uh And for some reason, uh, to me,
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: that ship was kind of fucked up that.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: You can never like Benson should be the mayor.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Benson should have been the mayor, and the mayor should
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: not have been the mayor. But that's not why I
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: was pissed up. I was pissed off because it was like, Yo,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: you're gonna put me in the fucking room with the
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: washer and drying of all the wrong look. It was
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: either that or like a law. It was like a
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: There was a cot right outside of his room, and
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: I was not taking the cote. Take the fucking cot.
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: Fu.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Yeah. And then I didn't really have a door. So
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: we we we were very open with each other that summer.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: We were very very open with the We touched tips
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: no no, no, we didn't. We did doc did we
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: donk And we never docked.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: We never docked. That was the midst of the dream.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: This is all gonna get this.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Oh boy, now we're not cutting this out. Listen. This
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: is what always happens on the show. We say something
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: like that and then donneges we're cutting this out, and
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: then we almost never cut it out. We used to
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: play ping pong in our in our box.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: In our underwear do We had a lot of great times.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: I remember I.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Think the writer Amy Tan is that a famous writer? Uh,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Joel Okay, as I understand it. The writer Amy Tan
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: lived beneath us, and she was not happy that two
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: guys partying all summer were in the loft above her.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and we would get a note like.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: We would get notes like Amy Tan is furious, you
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: guys need a fucking quiet down.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: She was like, she would write notes like do you
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: guys have fucking elephants upstairs?
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Because the banging. I can only imagine. She would write
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: some pretty unique notes though she was a written well.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: She was a good writer. They were beautifully written.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: She wrote the joy Luck Club. Holy shit, we were
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: fucking with the lady who wrote the joy Luck We.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Weren't fucking whether, we were just having fun. And I
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: remember her very well worded angry letters.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I wish you still had them.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Yeah, she pulled out the thesaurus for some of those.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: We could probably sell them on eBay. Those are worth something.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Amy Tan's angry letters. All right, we gotta keep going.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Thank you guys for coming on, Donald, thank.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: You, Hey, thank you guys, appreciate it. What is that
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: on your shirt? Summer League?
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Vegas Summer League. So probably knows about Summer League. Yeah,
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: and the yeah, basketball doak. You probably don't know too much.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: About what donald donald are you?
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: But no, we're big Bucks fans.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Bucks fans And okay, right on, how long do you
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: think you can hold at too? There?
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: For he's resigning?
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: You heard heard it?
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: You believe he's not coming to San Antonio show.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: I mean, look, here's the thing. Do they come out
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: of the word? I mean, there is no East this
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: year or West for the for this bubble round that
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: they're talking about at Disney, right, it's just a bunch
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: of teams thrown into a pot. Is that I think?
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: I think they are still doing the East West. It's
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: something weird though. It's kind of weird how they have
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: it set up.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: It would be nice if they just threw teams into
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: a pot so you could get, you know, first rounds
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: with like Houston versus Milwaukee or Houston vers you know, Washington.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: That'd be really cool.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: But what's his name again?
- 1:11:12Speaker 9: I want to try and use it, Jansa Joo. Yes, well,
- 1:11:28Speaker 9: I gotta tell you he's a really great player. And
- 1:11:30Speaker 9: what I like about him is he's always in the paint.
- 1:11:36Speaker 9: That's actually true actually, And he reminds me of Rodman
- 1:11:40Speaker 9: because he's always getting those rebounds.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Wow, not bad, not bad, not bad.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: Not big basketball. Kind of a quick little share story.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: We uh, I think back to the episode where I
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: don't think it was the standards. There's like a flashback
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: to where you guys got to go see Michael Jordan's
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: when we were in high school. I want ticket to
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: buck Lakers game and shout rest in peace Kobe Bryant.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: But we got to see Kobe Bryant playing. We rolled up.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: That's we're doing. Don't see Kobe Bryant and I take it.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Take it unlike unlike Jad and Turk. You guys remember
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: the tickets. I take it right. Yeah, isn't that Is
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: that like in Scrubs? Lord Donald? Is that how you
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: began to lose your hair?
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: You first started pulling it out, and I don't know
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: how I began to I don't know how Turk started
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: to lose his hair. But that was the first moment,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: the first that's one of the first moments.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: All right, guys, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I really appreciate it.
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Appreciate Hey everyone, Wisconsin, come play tennis with the Zach
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: for tennis coaches too.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Oh really, right on? What I love it. I love it.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: I'll find you guys, all right, guys. You know, I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: appreciate that they knew how to tap into the one
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: sport that I could talk about, and there they were.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: They were very good guests.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: I like that, Uhsi Massi is back this Yeah, which
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: is great. He went on to become a time traveling hero.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: That was another show I watched, Shay Heroes. I watched
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: that all the way through.
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Yeah, by the way, a couple of goose I had
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: goosebumps multiple times in this episode. The first was nine
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: fifty six when they're playing pool in the bar and
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Ben's hand is still bleeding and the look Cox gives
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: to JD. It really moved me because it's mynament. Because
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: I was reading your essays and now was all emotional, Shay,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: but I went My first reaction was Cox can't hide
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: the fact that he respects JD is a doctor to
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: know that he'll know what that could mean.
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: Yeah, immediately, do you know what I mean?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: It was like, you know, Cox is always fronting like,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: oh the girl's name and JD you sucking, but obviously
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: under undercurrent trying to build him up. But that was
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: a moment of shock where he looked to it as
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: a peer, as a peer and when you know what
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: that could mean?
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's like it. So you see you see him
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: do it in the in the pilot, it was like
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: the first time he expresses some sort of like not admiration,
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: but like you know, I'm gonna grab a hold of
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: you and take take care of you. And then this
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: time was the first time when he he doesn't say anything.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: There's no words at all. He just looks and he knows,
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: and JD knows, and the only person who doesn't know
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: in that moment is Ben. He's like, oh, it's about it.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: I was really instructed by the respect that he's I mean,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: obviously in his mind wasn't I'm gonna now respect this person.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: It was just it didn't he didn't have a moment
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: to put on his airs if you will, He didn't
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: have a moment to put on his front. He just
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: had an instant reaction to a fellow doctor and went, oh, fuck,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: you know what this could mean.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: It's totally it's it's totally different than when you see
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: him at the very beginning of the next episode when
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: he walks into the room and JD and and Jordan
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: and Ben are in there, and JD's doing the thing
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: about like we knew, you know, you don't need a
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: we don't need a resident, We need like a hero.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: And then he comes walking in and now now he's
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: prepared for the situation and doing the whole thing. But yeah,
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: you're exactly right in that moment and.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: Then and the second time. First of all, I just
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: want to say at ten or five, there was a
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: really cool transition moment that Larry Trilling did from I
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: love how they went from the bar right to the
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: exam room. That was cool.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Also, before we before we moved before, before we move
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: forward with that, you know, he says, I've never asked
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: you out for a beer before, but he had asked
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: you out for a beer before, and that was when
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: he lost his ship and tore up the lab that day,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: and he was having his worst day and you got
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: caught up in it. He does invite you out for
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: a beer. You guys go to a bar and you
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: drink beer, you drink together actually, so that was very
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: weird that he was like, you know, I've never asked
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: you out, maybe you've blocked it out. Whatever, I'm just
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: you know, you're just trying to show off.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: That you're like the Scrubs Wiki guy. By I mean
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: a lot of laughter on my Insta comments about Scrubs
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Wiki guys. They were like someone was like that guy
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: pulled a total Dorian and that people were just laughing about.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: How But no, friends, Trevor, we we got you. Now
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: you're gonna be our Scrubs wiki guy, right, Donald.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: I mean he doesn't necessarily want him.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: No, but I kind of like that about his character. No,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: but I kind of liked that about his character in
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: the show. He's like a reluctant. He like a reluctant.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: He's reluctant.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: So, yeah, that's what you do. Think of it as
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: like the hero's journey. In the beginning, you don't really
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: want to do it. Yeah, once you get on board,
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: you're off to an adventure, that adventure of a lifetime.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Trevor, by the time we do one hundred and
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: eighty two episodes, you'll be happy that you came along
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: on the journey and the other moment and the other
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: moment we got goo goosebumps. As I said earlier, that's
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: that Shaye writes about in his essay was when Jad
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: read the chart and sees that Ben has leukemia, and
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Carla comes up and she says, are you okay? And
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I just say no, And it was just really, really
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: powerful because it was one of those moments that she's
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: talking about where there had just been a silly moment
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: of of the fantasy of what happens in that in
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: that blood test guy's office, and and and and and
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Doug being you know Doug, and then all of a sudden, bam,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: we just drop in with, Hey, this guy we just
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: made you fall in love with he's got leukemia.
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: She's so good in like every single moment, Like she
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: has this this like a like her player efficiency rating
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: has got to be fucking outrageous, yeah, which is like
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: Yeah, she's if you were playing if you were playing
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: NBA two K, she's like ninety six ninety seven, Like
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: she's like just straight up like she's glitch mode man
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: at that time. Yeah.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I think that she is an incredible actress and in
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: the show, she was the perfect tool to use for
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: moments like this because she was the heart, you know,
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: she was the heart of She was the conscience and
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: the heart for everybody.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: At least the first two seasons. I think as the
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: show went on, she you know, she became as much
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: of us a character as we you know, as all
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: of us did. But in the first two seasons, she
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: was definitely the grounding factor to all of the you
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: know what I mean to everything m hm.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: So then we go into this fantasy that we don't
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: know is a fantasy delivery end of the show, and
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: all of this happens in Jady's magination, which which again
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: we talked about it early in this podcast, but you
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: know that totally foreshadows the giant mislead we do in
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: season three with with Johnny not knowing that that that
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Ben's gone. So it's just really interesting that that bill
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: not only introduced Ben for for the long haul, but
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: then mirrored that sort of wacky fantasy structure.
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: Well, so when when when you reached out and asked
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: which episode I wanted to be, like, if I could,
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: if I wanted to be on a thing, that that
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: was the whole reason that I ended up picking this
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: one because I think this episode in season one especially
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: is like the one episode where we see the most
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: amount of tricks that Scrubs is able to pull off that.
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: Maybe a lot of shows aren't. So so if we
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: have if we put a list together, you have that
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: great scene where Elliott makes herself cry to get the
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: to redo the thing right. So this is like her
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: being very silly in this situation. But to do that
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: as an actor, I imagine, is incredibly tricky, just like pull
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: that out of you. So you have her doing that.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: You have Carla with JD in the hallway and Carla's
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: doing her quick missile strike right here where she's just
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: like get a pump, a scene full of emotion. You
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: have the thing where they're playing with timelines, which they
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: use to even greater effect later on. You have the
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: gag with we we find out that the janitor is
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: in like the background of all of these pictures. There's
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: so much we have. We have doctor Cox using his
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: serious voice. He doesn't do it very often, but when
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: he does it, you feel it. And he tells JD, like,
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: your only job today is you get these test results
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: back like you love to see him drop everything do that.
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: You have Turk sticking up for JD. You have Brendan
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: Fraser swooping in and being just like the perfect cameo
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: character where you have to be able to tell a joke,
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: but you also have to be able to stick this landing. Yeah,
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: there's just so much stuff going on. This one episode's perfect.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: By the way, say you just made me think of
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: something else, which was Sarah's bit which he really did
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: live on camera obviously, which which actors often have to
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: do and can always do, but Sarah does literally live
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: on camera. Here is get themselves in a headspace where
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: they can produce tears, and that moment really encapsulates exactly
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: what you're talking about in Scrubbs, being able to dance
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: between comedy and drama. Because what Sarah's doing is very funny,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: but if you look at the words she's saying to
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: get herself to cry, it's very serious. Is the painful
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: stuff from her life and trying to impress her father
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: and whatever whatever she was saying, But it was like
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: happening simultaneously, is this thing you're laughing at, but what
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: the woman is saying is so sad? Do you know
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: what I mean? And then it ends with her with
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: tears streaming down her face. If it was a really
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: great acting woman for Sarah, she's amazing. What about Chop
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: Chop Nancy, Rapido Rapo.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I remember that, dude, I remember that day. I remember.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: I think that was one of the first times where
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: I was having a hard time with lines.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: I remember Chop Chop Nancy.
- 1:21:36Speaker 8: No.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: I had the whole thing where I was like, you're
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: gonna go back there and you're gonna do this and
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: blah blah blah. I think that was one of the
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: first times where I was like, I didn't study this.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Oh shit. Leonard makes an appearance.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Here without a hook arm, though without.
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: A hook on his hand. So what is the story.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I read on scrubs Wiki that the guy wrote perhaps
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: this episode is before his ice machine accident.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: I think it is. I didn't.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: I didn't remember that that Leonard had lost his arm
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: in an ice machine accident. Did you need that?
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: I did not either, But I love that.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I love that on scrubs Wiki it's like this may
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: have occurred before ice machine.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: We didn't have to because he had a hand.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: So, for those of you who don't remember, that's Randall Winston,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: our line producer who not only played Death but also
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: played Leonard. This is his first appearance in his wig.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: And the afro. Isn't that big yet either.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: It's like he was he was keeping his throat tighter, right,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: but he does he does not yet have a hook hand.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: This might be I believe, the only appearance of Leonard
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: without his hook hands, so the ice machine. But then again, sorry,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: I'm going all over the place. But this was a fantasy.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: So maybe in JD's weird daydream, Leonard.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Didn't have to cook yet. He didn't recognize Leonard had
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: a hook yet he had.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: I hadn't noticed that Leonard had a hook hit, so
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: when I had a fantasy, Shane.
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: That seems like something you would notice, though, I just
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: want to you've probably noticed that.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: So it took me a moment because I've forgotten. Well,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: I wanted to just mention in eighteen thirty six again,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Brennan took all those pictures and they're pretty great, uh pictures,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: I believe christ this still save a bunch of them.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: And then JD. Yeah, So then I was kind of
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: surprised by that reveal. You know, again, I've watched these
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: in twenty years. I thought it was cool to see this,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: you know, and Bill was smart directorially and writing wise.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: You needed something very specific to make the audience go,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: this is the exact same moment. You need a device
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: because the audience is going to centerally track it. Keep
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: in mind, when people were watching these, they had commercial
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: breaks in and everything, so that you need the audience
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to make sure they tracked that whole run. And he
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: came up with the device of the exact playing cards
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: on their foreheads.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Right. But here's the thing. He also made it seem
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: like it was a curveball. That's you know, not only
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: did it curve, but the ship was a change up too,
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like, because you don't think
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: that the whole thing is a daydream. You think, just
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: when he gets the the paper the second time and
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: he meets uh, Brendan Fraser outside, Yeah, you think that's
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: all the fan that's just the fantasy. I'm gonna go
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: out there and hey man, it's just leukemia. It's not leukemia.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: You're You're fine. I was wrong. I was wrong. And
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: you know, the circle comes around and it's got this
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: weird You think, Okay, so this part's the fantasy. And
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: I expected you to be at the door of the
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: exit telling him, no, dude, here's what I think you
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: need to You need to come back inside actually and
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: it doesn't even do that. It jumps all the way
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: back to the moment. And so it was like a
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: It was like a not It wasn't just one pump fake.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: It was like he was under the rim giving you
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: the dream shake, you know what I mean? Like and
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: then you know what I mean?
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: You know what's funny about that fantasy? You know it's
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: the writing is such that it's supposed to be. Oh,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Ben says he doesn't like post pictures. You'll know it's
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: a fantasy because here we are taking a post picture.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: But what tipped it off even more from me was
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: that Kelso's happily getting in a picture with everything. I
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: was like, ELSA would never want to do with these. Yeah,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: I think that's it, guys. I think we we did
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: the whole We did the whole episode.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: Yeah we did.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Chane, did you have fun? Are you glad you did this?
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: I'm really glad this was like a you know, part
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: of me is like, these are two guys who I
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: have been watching for so long. I'm kind of nervous
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: to meet him. I don't really like to meet the
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: people who I admire because what if it turns out
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: their dicks? So I had that in my head. But no,
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: y'are cool. I hope you're better than I was.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Will you come back on is?
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, when you come back on?
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll come back on later on after y'all do
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: all of the other stuff for sure.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Because I have a feeling what's going to happen on
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: all of our social media is every one's gonna say
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Shaye was the best. Guess you need to have shade
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: back all the time. Carol mal Bear.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: Definitely hashtack Carl.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Whatever happened to be.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: He we don't know. He freaking we went into the
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: party and he got he got jumped or something like that.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Yeah, he definitely died on the show. In real life
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: he's still working.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: But on the show, you know he has a twin brother, right, yeah.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, And I remember one night we were out and
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: his twin brother. Everybody thought his twin brother was him,
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: and they were coming up to him going pedro.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: Pedro, and as I recall, the twin brother was rolling with.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: It, rolling with it and loving it, and he was like,
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: don't tell anybody. I was like, I'm not gonna say ship, dude,
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: I thought that I thought you were the other one.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Oh, I had people telling me that. I'm always say
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: that's funny, like Manny Moore's character does on the sh
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: and then I need to stop saying that Donald I
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: had someone write that to me.
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: You guys did date. Maybe that rubbed off on you.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Well I don't know if that's the case, but all right, guys,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I want to get out. I want to I know
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: you can leave it. Listen Shay's handle on Twitter at
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: Shay Serrano s h e A s E r r
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: A n O follow him on there. He is one
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: of the most popular fellows on Twitter. He does a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: lot of amazing I just talk for a second, shape
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: before we go about this cool thing you do with
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: the f O h army, tell people what that is.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: Shaye will have like drives for people that need help.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: He'll be like, all right, who's whose bills are we
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: paying this week? And then he'll like just venmo them cash.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: So just talk about it for a second.
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that's like the silly little sort of gorilla philanthropy
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: thing we started a couple of years ago where it
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: was like, after we had enough people following me on Twitter,
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: we were all grouped up together. If we got get
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: one hundred two hundred three hundred thousand people following, we
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: could raise a lot of money real fast if everybody
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: sends like a dollar or two dollars or whatever. And
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: so you know, we started doing that and then yeah,
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: when the coronavirus stuff hit, when the Black Lives Matter
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: movement started up after the George Floyd's murder, we're like,
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: you know, we're gonna try to help out in any
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: situation we can. So like people will send stuff to
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: me and we're like, all right, cool, we're gonna fund this.
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: We're gonna send some money out. So yeah, I think
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: like since March twelve, it's been you know, two hundred
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: and fifty two hundred and forty thousand dollars up, just
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: like straight cash. We've given two places of people.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: And do people give you I think just from following
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: you do. Some people who can afford it give you
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: like large sums and hey, say hey, Shay, distribute this.
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: Every once in a while, somebody will hit me up
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: like and my DMS and be like, hey, I don't
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: want judits, like say where this came from, but like
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: here's five thousand dollars. Can you pay bills for people
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: until this is gone? Like that happens every once in
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: a while. Mostly though, it's like we're all gonna chip
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: in five bucks, ten bucks and see what happens.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: That's really awesome, man, that that's really awes and he's
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: so sweet about it. People will write him things like, oh,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: thank you so much, Shay. I'm having trouble with my
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: bills and he's like, fuck that noise and he'll send
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: them money. That's awesome, awesome, all right, everybody, that's the

- 1:31:46Speaker 5: to Texas, I'll show up.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: Well, wait, hold on, now, I heard something about Tim
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Duncan and that being your favorite player of all time
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: is this year?
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: Absolutely absolutely?
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: Why why Tim Duncan? Why before we go? Why this
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: doesn't even have to be on the podcast. I just
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: need to know this because Tim is one of my
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: favorite players too. He's not my favorite player. Why Tim Duncan?
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: Okay, let me tell you that there's a very personal
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: connection that Tim Duncan has with San Antonio and that
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: he showed up and all of a sudden a city
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: that had an inferiority complex. You know, we're not as
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: hip as Austin, We're not as cool as as Houston
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: or whatever. They beat us in the playoffs. Blah blah blah.
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: He shows up and all of a sudden, we have
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: the guy on our team that everybody's afraid of, and
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: he's going to war and he's not backing down. You
- 1:32:34Speaker 5: gotta fucking kill this guy in the playoffs if you
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: want to beat him. He shows up, he delivers five
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: championships for us. All of a sudden, we have that
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: we I think he's the fifth or sixth greatest basketball
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: player of all time. We have him on our team.
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: He allows you, in your chest to feel like a winner,
- 1:32:51Speaker 5: to feel like a chepan. You know how it feels
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: when the team that you love wins a thing and
- 1:32:54Speaker 5: you feel like you're a part of it.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: It's like Jeter to New York Man, exactly know exactly
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: what you mean?
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: Yes, or Cole Milkinson in the original cast of Them.
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: Absolutely, that's what. That's what Tim Duncan did. So I
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: love him forever for that.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: I hear you, man, I feel like he had a
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: lot of really good Uh if it was the Justice League,
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: he had a lot of good supporting characters. He's Superman.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: He definitely had a Batman and it switched off between
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Genobilie and Tony Parker.
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: Uh, those guys were Those guys were great, but those
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: were not players you could take and put on other teams.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: And they maybe Janobili, Jenobli maybe you know, maybe Tony
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: in his in his younger years anyway, but.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: Not Tony, not as much as Jenobili though, and.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: When he shut up man and when he got there.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: He also had the Admiral David Robinson.
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: He did.
- 1:33:40Speaker 5: He did have Big Dave.
- 1:33:41Speaker 8: He did that.
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: Dave only got one. He got five.
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, Dave got two. They've got to them.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: None of them are as good as Mike Jaminski. All right,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: we gotta go. We love you, Thank you, Shay. I
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: hope he can be real friends in real life. I
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: think you and Donald might hit it off really well.
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: I think so too. He's like he's like, he's like
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: he was a dick when I first met him. That's
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: what I got out of the little That's what I
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: got out of the thing.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: No, you're cool, you're super cool, super No, you're on
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: your phone a lot. The one thing about that said
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: I got it was like down sitting between two fans
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: and he's on his phone, like talk to your family. Dick.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Maybe this white people don't follow you on Instagram. Fox
