- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity.
- 0:13No topic, off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 0:19Hey friends, family and Christ, thank you so much for tuning in.
- 0:23We've got a great book to tell you about on this episode.
- 0:27And I'm going to bring in Roland Warren.
- 0:30He's an accomplished author.
- 0:32He serves as president and CEO of CareNet, which we'll talk about.
- 0:37He's written several books, his first two books, Bad Dads of the Bible, and also Raising
- 0:42Sons of Promise.
- 0:44They've helped fathers and mothers apply biblical principles to the journey of parenting.
- 0:49It is latest book, which we'll focus on today.
- 0:52It's called The Alternative to Abortion, Why We Must Be Pro Abundant Life.
- 0:59That guides Christians on a new way forward for the pro-life movement in the aftermath
- 1:03of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
- 1:06Roland also writes a column for pathos.com.
- 1:09And also is the co-host of CareNet's podcast, CareCast, CareNet on Family, Faith, and
- 1:16Life.
- 1:17Good to see you, brother.
- 1:18Thank you so much for your time today.
- 1:22Good to be with you.
- 1:23Thanks so much for having me on.
- 1:24I appreciate it.
- 1:25Well, thank you.
- 1:26So, before we dive into the book, there's two things I want to talk about.
- 1:30First, CareNet, but also your story with your wifey vet.
- 1:34Now, what would you like to tackle first, because both of them relate to the book and
- 1:38the work you're doing?
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:41I mean, they're both interconnected.
- 1:42I mean, let's start with the most important, my wife.
- 1:45So yes.
- 1:46So my wifey vet, we've been married for 43 years and, in a lot of ways, she and I kind
- 1:54of what happened when we were college students really has a big hand in even how I think
- 2:00about the life issue at this point and certainly in terms of how we try to address it.
- 2:06When we were in college, we're both undergrads at Princeton.
- 2:09We faced an unplanned pregnancy from a human perspective, obviously.
- 2:14And we had a situation where she went into student health services at Princeton.
- 2:20She was a sophomore.
- 2:21I was a junior and said, look, give me a test and they gave her the test and came back
- 2:26and the test was positive.
- 2:27And the nurse without missing a beat said, now, of course, you're going to have an abortion.
- 2:32And you've said, well, I don't want to have an abortion.
- 2:34I want to have my baby.
- 2:35And nurse said, my gosh, how are you going to graduate from Princeton with a baby?
- 2:38What are you going to do when you graduate?
- 2:39She said, well, I want to become a doctor.
- 2:41And nurse says, well, gosh, how are you going to become a doctor with a baby?
- 2:43So she really encouraged her to have an abortion.
- 2:46And I imagine you that came back to the dorm room and we talked about it.
- 2:49And we said, we're going to move forward with the plan and get married.
- 2:52So we did.
- 2:53We got married to Mother Justice of the Peace in Princeton and had four college students
- 2:57there.
- 2:58She went on to graduate from Princeton with one baby, but with two, you know, it's Ivy
- 3:02League.
- 3:03You've got to try to overachieve and went on to become a doctor.
- 3:05She's been practicing, I guess, close to 30 years now.
- 3:07So I just saw in that experience a lot of the elements that I talk about in terms of
- 3:12the distinction between being pro-life and being pro-abundant life and how God sort of used
- 3:17that to kind of help me see this issue maybe a little differently than other folks might
- 3:22at this point.
- 3:23So have you done research or are aware of any kind of statistics?
- 3:29I wouldn't, I would imagine it would kind of hard to find the number of nurses, doctors,
- 3:36counselors that would force or try to get a woman to abort and give up their child rather
- 3:42than to have a baby.
- 3:44Are you familiar with with the, that must be so out of whack because I'm sure they do that
- 3:48often, especially on the college campus.
- 3:51Yeah, I don't know if I have any, like I said, Dadia, we've never done a survey asking
- 3:55that specific question, although we did do one where we asked women who was the most
- 4:01influential in your decision to abort.
- 4:04And who did you talk to about your abortion decision?
- 4:07And medical professionals were number two, I think in both of those surveys.
- 4:11So they certainly have an important role to play.
- 4:16They're the person's vulnerable, like my wife was vulnerable in that moment.
- 4:20And so definitely reaching medical professionals and having them have that perspective makes
- 4:25a big difference, which is one of the reasons why plan parenthood and the other abortion
- 4:29providers really spend a lot of time trying to sway the medical community on the abortion
- 4:35issue.
- 4:36That's right.
- 4:37And they do it sometimes.
- 4:38Let's be honest.
- 4:39Deceptively, they won't show ultrasounds and they'll just assume that a woman wants to
- 4:43do something else in her life other than have a baby and be a mom right away, right?
- 4:48Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:49I mean, I think one of the things I talk about when I look at this issue, I talk about
- 4:54the fact that the abortion decision is kind of built on this notion that nothing good
- 4:58can come from this, that the baby is a net negative.
- 5:01Your life will just, nothing good will come.
- 5:04And so when you're in that vulnerable situation, it's easy for you to kind of adopt that narrative
- 5:09as the truth.
- 5:10When in reality, it's just a perspective that really is not informed by anything else other
- 5:15than just a perspective.
- 5:16And so I think that that certainly has a role to play and I think that women that are
- 5:22in that situation, obviously the men that supported, can be very much susceptible to that
- 5:27perspective that nothing good can come from this.
- 5:30And I can just tell you from my own life, just looking at our story, playing it forward.
- 5:34I mean, I love, I have this one picture of my wife holding in our granddaughter who's
- 5:37the daughter of the son that we were supposed to abort and the look on her face is just an
- 5:44amazing look.
- 5:45And the thing is, when she was a 19 year old in that nurse's office with that pregnancy
- 5:51test, she couldn't see that picture, but God did.
- 5:54So this notion of nothing good can compliment this, right?
- 5:57So she has a son from that process, which is, you know, a joy from her life.
- 6:01And she also has a granddaughter from that process, but you couldn't see that in that moment
- 6:05of God did.
- 6:06And that's one of the reasons why we can't put our faith and our hope and our trust in
- 6:09the wisdom of man when it comes to something like a issue related to life.
- 6:14And we're God has spoken very clearly about this.
- 6:16And I think the other thing to, you know, I'd say just in a biblical context is that no
- 6:22in the, the scripture says in the beginning was the word, well, and it's the word logos.
- 6:26And when you look at that word, the word logos in the Greek, it has three meanings.
- 6:29It means message.
- 6:31It means reason.
- 6:32And it means a message, reason, and plan, those three things, right?
- 6:36So in the beginning, there was a message.
- 6:38There's a message that comes to you.
- 6:39You have this, this pregnancy test, right, that tells you that you're pregnant.
- 6:43But there's also a reason for it and there's also a plan for it.
- 6:47And so what the evil one tries to do in that moment of uncertainty is to get you to put
- 6:51your reason and your plan to the message that God gave me really, and that's where faith
- 6:57comes in because, okay, God gave me this message.
- 6:59You gave me this positive present pregnancy test.
- 7:01Okay.
- 7:02There's a reason for it.
- 7:03God knows it even if I don't and there's a plan for it.
- 7:06God knows it even if I don't and that's where the faith in God and the trust is here.
- 7:10And that's one of the reasons why the work that Karen does across the country with our
- 7:131200 plus pregnancy centers has really what, you know, pregnant, the folks that are
- 7:18about client advocates at pregnancy centers are trying to help women do, they're trying
- 7:21to help them say, well, hold on a second, you have the message, yes, you have the positive
- 7:24pregnancy test.
- 7:25But let's trust in God that he has a reason and a plan and a plan and plan for this.
- 7:30And of course, what Satan seeks to do is to get you put your own reason, your own plan,
- 7:35either from the world or from him or from your own, from our own sinful desires in place
- 7:39of what God has, has stored for us.
- 7:41And I could just say, you know, it's absolutely a blessing that we made that decision.
- 7:45Oh, praise God.
- 7:47And I think of, you know, the father of lies, kill, steal and destroy.
- 7:50That's his modus operandi.
- 7:52But I want to talk to you a little bit by the way, I don't know that I gave the website
- 7:56care-net.org.
- 7:59It's care-net.org.
- 8:03We are going to dive into the book, Roland, but talk to us about church engagement.
- 8:08I think that's so hugely important to get churches because even in the church,
- 8:13just to be honest, with the declining biblical worldview in America, even among so-called
- 8:18or professing Christians, church engagement, trying to get churches and Christians and even
- 8:23some pastors to be committed pro-lifers.
- 8:26Explain that place, how you work with churches.
- 8:31Yeah, no, that's a key part of this.
- 8:33I mean, you look at James 127 talks about religion that God, our father finds his pure
- 8:37and fault was to care for the orphans and widows and their distress and to keep you
- 8:40away from yourself from being polluted by the world.
- 8:43Well, when that was written, what was an orphan?
- 8:45What was a child or a father?
- 8:46And what did it also mean?
- 8:47What was a widow?
- 8:48It was typically a mother without a husband.
- 8:50And the church had a very specific call to that very vulnerable demographic from their
- 8:55Old Testament all the way to the New Testament that a measure of righteousness is how we
- 8:59step into those situations.
- 9:01So someone facing a pregnancy center today, if you think about it, it's essentially
- 9:06that husband and father being dead as it was on ancient times when that was written.
- 9:11It's that husband and proverbial father, proverbial husband and father, if you will,
- 9:14are saying to the mother and the child, you're dead to me.
- 9:17And the church is a very specific role to step into that vulnerable situation and there
- 9:21to try to revive that proverbarily dead husband and father, but also to care for that orphan
- 9:28and widow, which we call single mothers and kids in that context.
- 9:31So the church is a very, very important role in this.
- 9:34And I found that that's one of the key things that we have to do.
- 9:37We have to get the church more involved.
- 9:39And that's why this pro-abundant life perspective is actually designed to do just that.
- 9:44Well, I want you to expand on that.
- 9:46So I was just looking at that on your web, Senator, who we are.
- 9:49And I could read it, but I really like what you're doing there.
- 9:53What is the difference between pro-life and pro-abundant life?
- 9:56Yeah, let's start with the question is what does it mean to be pro-life?
- 10:00I mean, you think about pro-life and you take the turn and you say, okay, you've got
- 10:04people that say their pro-life and I always ask people, what do you mean by that?
- 10:07Because you can have one person that says, I'm pro-life and that's because I believe
- 10:10in a model day and I believe that the circumstances of a child's conception and birth should not
- 10:14determine its humanity and worth.
- 10:16So whether you're conceived in love or lust or plan or unplanned or you have a fetal
- 10:20abnormality, it doesn't, it doesn't matter because you're creating in the image of God
- 10:24and worthy of protection.
- 10:26It's intrinsic that you have value and worth.
- 10:28That's one person.
- 10:30Then you could say have another person who says, well, I'm pro-life because I'm for a 15-week
- 10:34man.
- 10:35So I'm going to limit abortion.
- 10:36Well, how many abortions happen before 15 weeks?
- 10:40Well, 96% of abortions happen before 15 weeks.
- 10:45So what about you?
- 10:46Well, I'm 24 or 20 week man.
- 10:47Well, how many abortions happen before 20 weeks?
- 10:49Well, it's 96%.
- 10:50I'm, excuse me, 99%.
- 10:52So, okay, so you're against 3% and the other person's against 1%, I like, so what you
- 10:58see is that the term pro-life is actually on a spectrum.
- 11:02It's on a spectrum.
- 11:03It's not an absolute because it was given to a political process.
- 11:08This is part of what I feel like that God has kind of put on my heart.
- 11:11See, we shouldn't be surprised that we have this dilemma because we've taken the issue
- 11:16primarily and we've given it to a political process to define what it means for life.
- 11:22I mean, that's the reality of it.
- 11:23It should be defined in the church, but we've allowed the politics to define it.
- 11:27And if you think about the political process, the role of politics is essentially to take
- 11:31two people that have convictions of some sort, like your environment, I'm a big lumber,
- 11:36whatever it may be, right?
- 11:37And we get together and we compromise some of our convictions in order to reach a compromise.
- 11:42That's the political process.
- 11:43That's the nature of it.
- 11:44Now, that's fine if you're talking about taxes or roads or things of that nature that
- 11:48can be split.
- 11:49But if you have an issue that you can't split, like you can't split the baby and you
- 11:55give it to a political process, well, the political process only has one tool and it's
- 12:01going to do it.
- 12:02And a great illustration I use with folks to really kind of help see that is when Solomon
- 12:06had that dilemma where he had two women and one baby.
- 12:09And the one woman says, well, you know, this is my baby, the other one says, this is my
- 12:12baby.
- 12:13Okay.
- 12:14And Solomon's sitting in this role.
- 12:15He's sitting, frankly, in a political position as a king and he says, oh, easy peasy.
- 12:19Where's my sword?
- 12:20We'll just split this in half.
- 12:21It'll be a beautiful deal.
- 12:22So I'll just split it in half.
- 12:24You'll get some and she'll get some.
- 12:25And what happens?
- 12:26The woman who is advocating for life that wants to protect the vulnerable, justice and
- 12:31mercy and righteousness, that woman says, no, no, let her have the baby.
- 12:34In other words, she's going to sacrifice some of her life, her hopes and her aspirations.
- 12:40She's going to sacrifice that in order to protect the vulnerable.
- 12:43I call that woman the proabundant life woman and the prochoice woman said, well, I'm fine.
- 12:47I'm fine with dead babies, splitted away.
- 12:49And what does Solomon do in that moment?
- 12:51This is really where the wisdom comes in is that he has other roles that he plays.
- 12:55He's an archetype for Christ, if you will.
- 12:58So he's got the king, yep, okay, but he's also a prophet and a priest.
- 13:02So the wisdom is knowing which one of those roles to use when you adjudicate a situation.
- 13:08So when you're adjudicating a situation that requires justice and mercy and righteousness,
- 13:13right?
- 13:14And if all you have is the sword, then you've got a problem.
- 13:19So when we take an issue like the life issue and we give it to the politics, see the other
- 13:23sides happy with it being the politics, why, because they're happy with dead babies, right?
- 13:28But when you're advocating for justice and mercy and righteousness, then you want to make
- 13:32sure, no, no, no, we need, we need to not have just the politics lead on this.
- 13:36There's a role for the politics, right?
- 13:38But it should not lead.
- 13:39And so what I tell people the time, the difference between being pro life and being proabundant
- 13:44life is that pro life in terms of how the term is currently kind of administered in the
- 13:48public square is to lead you to the polls.
- 13:51The proabundant life perspective is to lead you to the cross.
- 13:55And you're supposed to go from the cross to the polls, in other words, to take the perspective
- 13:59of the cross to the polls and we have it the opposite.
- 14:03We have people taking the perspective of the polls like, well, we can split life this
- 14:06side and the other.
- 14:07We can negotiate and compromise.
- 14:08And they're taking that perspective to the church and saying, well, this is what politically
- 14:11is possible.
- 14:13When the church is supposed to be speaking, the other way, you know, this is what is morally
- 14:16right.
- 14:17And so we get the politicians to align with that and we haven't done that.
- 14:20And I'd say the last things, we, you know, for in a lot of ways we've stopped making the
- 14:23moral argument around the life issue in the public square, you tend to make the political
- 14:28argument in the public square, not the moral argument.
- 14:31Now there's a role for the political argument, but it becomes below the moral.
- 14:36So, so if you think about something like the abortion pills recently some research came
- 14:40out that said that the abortion pill was hurting, hurting women more than what was what
- 14:48they thought it would, for example, was 0.5% of women would have some serious adverse reaction
- 14:53to the abortion pill and they looked at some insurance data of like almost over 900,000
- 14:58women in terms of their claims and they found that it was 11%, so that's 22 times more
- 15:03than what, you know, was prescribed and what people thought.
- 15:06Now you have a couple different ways that you can kind of get at that.
- 15:09And you can say, well, we want to go to the government and say, look, we, we, the abortion
- 15:12pill is hurting, hurting women, so we need to stop it.
- 15:16But the biggest problem with the abortion pill is not that it's hurting women.
- 15:19It's important.
- 15:20The biggest problem with the abortion pill is that it's killing children.
- 15:24So if you're advocating and you don't start with a moral argument that it's actually
- 15:28killing children, then they could actually give us a better abortion pill that hurts women
- 15:33less, but still kills babies just as much as before.
- 15:36Yes.
- 15:37That's what I was talking about.
- 15:38The wisdom there of knowing how to navigate that and to start with the moral argument with
- 15:43Jesus always did.
- 15:44Amen.
- 15:45You didn't start with the public.
- 15:46You always start with it.
- 15:47Amen.
- 15:48Um, Roland, there's a lot of people in our audience watching or listening, shouting amen
- 15:53right now that are really, it's really refreshing to hear this perspective because we, I'll
- 15:59put myself in that camp, we are tired of the political ping pong when compromise almost
- 16:04always means.
- 16:05As you said, dead babies just at a maybe less of a percent, but we've got to take a brief
- 16:09pause.
- 16:10Friends, the book is on Amazon, the alternative to abortion.
- 16:13We're speaking with Roland Warren.
- 16:15We'll be right back on World View Matters.
- 16:18Today's show is brought to you by Harbinger's Daily, world news, biblically understood.
- 16:24Stay informed at harbingerstaley.com.
- 16:35So, um, Roland, since the abortion pill, that might be the biggest reason that today,
- 16:41I don't think a lot of people realize there are more abortions than when Roe v. Wade was
- 16:49the so-called law of the land and a lot of people going, well, okay, is there anything
- 16:52else other than the abortion pill because that's, that's just evil.
- 16:55That's wicket.
- 16:56That's, that's the Satan finding new ways to do evil and we're implementing it, right?
- 17:01State by state.
- 17:03Yeah, no, it is.
- 17:06It's the leading cause of abortion today, about 63% of abortions happen via the abortion
- 17:10pill.
- 17:11And now, by the way, this is why going back to the political narrative just for a second,
- 17:15the abortion pill is supposed to be used before 10 weeks.
- 17:18So a 15-week ban, which you hear advocacy groups and politicians talking about, well,
- 17:24most abortions are happening for 10 weeks.
- 17:28So, so 15 weeks, I mean, it really doesn't mean anything.
- 17:31So yeah, it's, it's a real issue.
- 17:33So I think a lot of, from my perspective, we've got to have more focus, in my view, on,
- 17:39on, again, you got to try to focus on stopping the supply, get that.
- 17:43But the most successful efforts will be when you stop the demand.
- 17:47So you got to ask yourself the question, why do women want to have abortions to begin
- 17:50with?
- 17:51And then you have to solve that.
- 17:52And if you solve that issue, guess what?
- 17:54Even if the demand is ubiquitous and available, it'll be unthinkable because you've changed
- 17:59the heart of someone who could seek an abortion.
- 18:01And that's why even when Roe was the law of the land, people asked me all the time, like,
- 18:04when Roe is going to be overturned, and I said, you'll get it.
- 18:07Roe gets overturned every single day.
- 18:09My wife overturned Roe.
- 18:11She was, Roe was perfectly legal, but was unthinkable because of a perspective.
- 18:16And really, I, I, now I look at that perspective, and I say it's because of the proabundant
- 18:20life perspective.
- 18:21So let me just explain that quickly.
- 18:22And again, it's some great detail on the book.
- 18:24But it's based on John Tintin.
- 18:26For Christ said, I came that you might have life and then have that life abundantly, right?
- 18:30This is Jesus' wise statement.
- 18:32And so when you look at that passage in the Greek, it's clear, he's talking about two types
- 18:36of life.
- 18:37He's talking about physical life, where we get the word, that we get the biology, like
- 18:41the iOS, BIAS, if you will.
- 18:43And he's also talking about spiritual life, like a unique type of spiritual life that
- 18:47only comes from a relationship with God.
- 18:49So he's essentially saying, I came to link your BIAS to my Zoey that you might be heartbeats
- 18:55that are heaven bound, heartbeats that are heaven bound.
- 18:58Now, if you think about it, you say, well, so Jesus was saying he wasn't pro-life.
- 19:03Jesus was saying he was pro-abundant life, right?
- 19:06He's solving for abundant life, heartbeats that are heaven bound, right?
- 19:11And so when you look at that, you say, well, how do we bring heaven to earth?
- 19:14Like, how do you do that?
- 19:15And there are ways that Christ, that this happens, if you will, that Christ, articulate, or
- 19:19that Christ is a model of, or Christ's experiences, a model of.
- 19:23And the first piece of that is God's design for family.
- 19:27And what I'm talking about is an activity narrative, like the birth of Christ.
- 19:31So here you have Mary facing an unplanned pregnancy from a human perspective.
- 19:34She has hopes, dreams, aspirations for her life that do not include a child at that time
- 19:38and in that way, Angel comes to her and says, you will bear it, you will concede and bear
- 19:42a child, right?
- 19:43So you need to birth to a child.
- 19:45And Mary is facing all this uncertainty, right?
- 19:48Like, well, how am I going to tell Joseph?
- 19:50What's my family going to say?
- 19:51I'm going to take care of this to all of this uncertainty.
- 19:53And what is she doing at that moment?
- 19:54She doesn't focus on the uncertainty, but she doesn't know she focuses on the certainty
- 19:58of what she does.
- 19:59There's the life growing inside of her.
- 20:00And it's not a life worth sacrificing, but a life worth sacrificing before.
- 20:04And she said, what let it be on to me as you've said.
- 20:07And so what does God do?
- 20:08So what does God do, right?
- 20:10So a lot of people say, well, gosh, I got it.
- 20:11So we're supposed to help the proverbial Mary's and save the proverbial Jesus.
- 20:15But what did God do?
- 20:16I mean, what did God do to make sure that Mary's unplanned pregnancy wasn't the Christ's
- 20:20pregnancy?
- 20:21It's an angel to Joseph.
- 20:22And Joseph faced the same dilemma as any abortion-minded man, holds for his life, dreams for his life,
- 20:27did not include a child at this time, and in this way, and he was blown away, put her away
- 20:31quietly.
- 20:32Because back then, the way you did a cultural abortion, if you will, was you put the woman
- 20:35and the baby away.
- 20:37So Joseph was faced with the same dilemma as any abortion-minded man today, right?
- 20:42And what does the angel do?
- 20:43It comes to Joseph and says two things.
- 20:45Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, very first thing, right?
- 20:49Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
- 20:51That's the first thing that he said.
- 20:53So in other words, Joseph was called in that moment to be a husband to marry and then
- 20:57a father to the child growing inside of her.
- 20:59So what you see in terms of God's response to an unplanned pregnancy from a human perspective,
- 21:04what did he do?
- 21:05He built a family.
- 21:06He built a family.
- 21:08He built a family.
- 21:10So you see the sanctity of marriage and family and the sanctity of life.
- 21:14Now, why is this story so important to me?
- 21:16It's the same situation that happened with my wife.
- 21:19The way my wife got pregnant, very different from Mary, obviously.
- 21:22But the practical circumstance is exactly the same.
- 21:25She had to tap into her inner Mary in order to do what she did.
- 21:28Well, guess what?
- 21:29God called me also to tap into my inner Joseph.
- 21:32Now when I looked at what's happening in the pro-life movement, you don't see that.
- 21:37You see us working on love them both, help the woman save the baby.
- 21:41But that's not the design that you see in the first chapter, the first book of the New
- 21:44Testament.
- 21:45I'll be creating families.
- 21:47And here's why that's really important.
- 21:4987% of the women that have abortions are unmarried.
- 21:52So explaining to me how you're going to solve the abortion issue without also addressing
- 21:56the marriage issue.
- 21:57And so what you see in the first chapter of the first book of the New Testament is this
- 22:03notion that brings two things together.
- 22:05The sanctity of marriage and family is God designed and the sanctity of life.
- 22:10So I never talk about the sanctity of life without the sanctity of marriage and family
- 22:14because God, He linked those two together.
- 22:17And in the birth of Christ, you see those two things coming together.
- 22:21And when a woman has a guy who says, I'll be a husband to you and a father to the child
- 22:25growing inside of her.
- 22:26Guess what?
- 22:27She's more likely to do.
- 22:28You have that child.
- 22:29What?
- 22:30Life.
- 22:31Be us.
- 22:32So that's the first pillar.
- 22:33If you will, if the roots of pro-abundant life roof and you need pillars to hold it up,
- 22:39that first pillar is God's design for family.
- 22:42Boy, our country would look a whole lot different if more people understood God, life,
- 22:49marriage, family, and civil government, and everything else.
- 22:53But I want to ask you, bring it back to the moral and the church, how can the church
- 22:59lead?
- 23:00Because the abortion issue, some pastors won't talk about it.
- 23:03I know that's part of the solution, just give them a spine.
- 23:08But I'm just being honest.
- 23:11What are your thoughts?
- 23:12Well, again, yes, why won't pastors talk about it?
- 23:15Why?
- 23:16Because it's been framed as a political issue and it's a political pastor, right?
- 23:20It's engaged there.
- 23:21Like they have a long, exactly.
- 23:23So what's happened is they taken this, and we helped.
- 23:26We helped them take a moral issue and make it political.
- 23:31So when we take a moral issue and make it political, it sidelines the church.
- 23:36And they take a moral issue and make it political.
- 23:38That energizes their base.
- 23:42So the way that you have to start talking about this issue, in a way that actually focuses
- 23:48the church.
- 23:49What's the role of the church?
- 23:50The role of the church is what?
- 23:51To live out the great commandment, to fulfill the great commission.
- 23:54That's the role of the church, right?
- 23:56So you have to see the life issue.
- 23:57If a pastor is going to be engaged, he's got to see the life issue in that.
- 24:02And you do.
- 24:03If you look at the great commandment, it's about loving your neighbor.
- 24:04Well, guess what?
- 24:05It's about in the womb.
- 24:06It's her neighbor.
- 24:07It's her near one.
- 24:08And so abortion is a violation of the great commandment.
- 24:11And also, we're called to what?
- 24:13Make disciples, right?
- 24:15Matthew 28, 19.
- 24:16Of who are neighbors?
- 24:17Well, who's your first discipleship community?
- 24:19Your children.
- 24:20Killing one of your children is not an active discipleship.
- 24:23So when you start talking about the abortion issue in the context of the call of the church,
- 24:28which is living out the great commandment to fulfill the great commission, then pastors
- 24:31are engaged.
- 24:32So it's like the movie The Matrix.
- 24:33You've got to unplug and start to see the issue properly.
- 24:38I'll give you another quick illustration that makes this point.
- 24:42I talked to a group of pastors some years ago, and I asked him a question.
- 24:44It said, how many of you became pastors because you wanted to overturn Robeway?
- 24:48These pro-life pastors, nobody raised their hand.
- 24:50I said, how many of you became pastors because you wanted to end abortion in your lifetime?
- 24:54Nobody raised their hand.
- 24:55Then I said, how many of you became pastors because you felt called to preach the gospel
- 24:58of Jesus Christ and to make disciples for Jesus Christ every hand shot up?
- 25:02What does that tell you?
- 25:03The pastors don't see the issue primarily as a great commandment, great commission issue.
- 25:09It's something that they care about, but it's not interwoven into the fiber of the church.
- 25:15That's why I say, when you talk about it from a pro-abundant life perspective, that gets
- 25:19you to basically exchange the podium, which is kind of pro-life narrative for the pulpit.
- 25:26Because only the pulpit has this notion of why Jesus came, that we might have life
- 25:31and have that life abundantly.
- 25:33Only the pulpit has the notion of living out the great commandment to fulfill the great commission.
- 25:38Only the pulpit has that perspective of seeing water for the thirsty, food for the hungry,
- 25:43clothes for the naked, home for the homeless, through the lens of good works that lead to
- 25:47discipleship, and then you need to include what compassion for the pregnant, which is
- 25:52a good work that leads to discipleship.
- 25:55Only the pulpit has God's design for family, only the pulpit.
- 26:01Not the podium, but only the pulpit, rather, not the pulpit, but it doesn't have God's design
- 26:06for family.
- 26:07They're talking about all kinds of families, but the pulpit is talking about a very specific
- 26:11kind of family, and that specific kind of family is the kind of family that makes abortion
- 26:16as possible, and I'm living proof of that.
- 26:19That's how you start to get pastors more engaged.
- 26:21You've got to go back to the Word of God.
- 26:22First chapter, the first book of the New Testament, the Nativity Narrative of the birth of Christ.
- 26:27Last chapter, the first book of the New Testament, what, the great commission.
- 26:32Go and make disciples.
- 26:33That's the rule of the church.
- 26:35That's the call of the church.
- 26:36When you frame the life issue in that context, any pastor worth his name, Deb, will be
- 26:40engaged.
- 26:41I think there are enough of them out there, but we've got to frame it in a way that really
- 26:43calls them to what they're called to do, which is to make disciples for Jesus Christ in
- 26:48any context that you see a person coming in.
- 26:51Amen.
- 26:52Brother, that's a great way to wrap this up.
- 26:54I saw it.
- 26:55It's time, but I want to mention the book is on Amazon, the alternative to abortion.
- 27:00Can they also get it at the Carenet website?
- 27:04No, it's on Amazon, but they should come to Carenet anyway to learn more about what we
- 27:10do.
- 27:11So I'd love for them to do that, but yeah, you can just get them on Amazon.
- 27:15There's a digital version as well, so yeah, I'd love for folks to engage and transition
- 27:20from being pro-life to being pro-abundant life in the context that Jesus talked about
- 27:26it in John Tenton.
- 27:27I love that pro-abundant life.
- 27:29So it's care-net.org, and every chapter of the book, by the way, concludes with practical
- 27:34steps that believers in Christ can take to turn their passion into pro-abundant life
- 27:41actions.
- 27:42So, Roland, Warren, God bless you, brother.
- 27:43So great to connect with you.
- 27:44Thanks for your time.
- 27:45Well, thanks for your interest.
- 27:47I appreciate it.
- 27:48Well, friends, thank you for watching and sharing.
- 27:51God bless you, and as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
