- 0:00Bumble is back both as our podcast sponsor and to help you
- 0:04find love. Honestly, dating can feel
- 0:07intimidating, but Bumble is definitely making it easier.
- 0:11Sometimes all you need is a different perspective or a
- 0:14little bit of guidance, which is exactly why Bumble has launched
- 0:17its new coaching hub. This offers support and tips
- 0:20from experts, and my friends are loving it so far.
- 0:23For the love of love, give Bumble another shot.
- 0:27Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:31daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:34from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:38Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:41I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:45media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:50everyone. OK, very exciting news.
- 0:54Some of you may have seen the promo for this, but High Stakes
- 0:58is officially coming back tomorrow.
- 1:00So we were thinking it was going to be a seasonal show, right?
- 1:04We did season one, it was 13 weeks and we were looking at
- 1:07doing season 2 either Q4 or Q1. And I knew that was a long time
- 1:12in between, but we've had so many changes in the business and
- 1:14I needed some time to get my bearings, to find a sponsor, all
- 1:18those things. OK?
- 1:19And then the girls came to me and said, what if we brought the
- 1:23show back weekly instead? So we were already thinking
- 1:27about possibly bringing it back on a weekly basis, a permanent
- 1:31weekly basis, as opposed to seasonally.
- 1:33And then Taylor Swift dropped the life of a showgirl.
- 1:37And all of the Taylor Swift versus Charli XCX stuff started
- 1:40coming up. And they were like, please, we
- 1:42need to cover this. We need to do this.
- 1:45And I was like, OK, let's do it, let's go for it.
- 1:49So they are officially coming back super last minute surprise
- 1:53tomorrow. And they're going to be in your
- 1:54ears every single Friday. I'll let them explain to you
- 1:58what the cadence of their episodes are going to look like,
- 2:01like how they're going to do it, because every episode is not
- 2:04going to be like a deep dive the way that they do it now.
- 2:07They are going to have other types of episodes.
- 2:09So it's going to be really, really good.
- 2:12I'm really excited to have them back for you guys.
- 2:14I know a lot of you miss them. So yes, go subscribe to High
- 2:17Stakes on Spotify on Apple. You can watch them here on our
- 2:20YouTube channel. As always, I'm really excited
- 2:22for you guys to get back into it.
- 2:25OK. And the last day that we're
- 2:26going to have this form up that Annabelle made for our fanfic
- 2:30deep dive later this month. So if you guys were into the
- 2:33fanfic community, if you wrote fanfiction, please fill it out.
- 2:37She's trying to get 250 responses and I think she's at
- 2:39like 44 or something like that. 46, she's almost there.
- 2:43She's going to close it at 50. All right, let's get into the
- 2:45stories for today. We honestly had a hard time
- 2:47finding stories that were not related to Taylor, Taylor Swift.
- 2:49But there was no way that I was going to do a full week of
- 2:52Taylor Swift stories for you guys because tomorrow Mini, I'm
- 2:56sure that we won't talk about Taylor, but high stakes will
- 2:58talk about Taylor. So I was like, I cannot do
- 3:00Tuesday, Wednesday and then have high stakes covering her Friday,
- 3:04and then I also do it on Thursday.
- 3:06Like no, no, no, no, no, no. Also, by the way, high stakes on
- 3:08Fridays for now is not going to impact me doing Mini possibly in
- 3:132026. We're going to look at the
- 3:15editorial schedule and decide like what makes the most sense,
- 3:18but we're still going to of our deep dives and I'm still going
- 3:20to be doing mini on the weeks that I don't do deep dives on
- 3:23Fridays. OK, the first story that I have
- 3:25for you guys is that Instagram is launching a creator award
- 3:28system. So the platform is launching
- 3:31Instagram Rings, which is a program that is billed as quote
- 3:34a new award celebrating creativity.
- 3:36According to the blog post announcing Instagram Rings, this
- 3:40award will be given to creators after being judged by a panel of
- 3:43judges, including the likes of Spike Lee, Marc Jacobs, Pat
- 3:46McGrath, Adam Masseri and more. The panel will nominate their
- 3:50favorite creators and then the eventual winners will have a
- 3:53ring visible on their Instagram profile.
- 3:57Like how I guess a ring appears when you post a story, like
- 4:00around their profile picture. The winners will also receive a
- 4:03physical ring designed by Grace Wales Bonner.
- 4:06According to The Hollywood Reporter, 25 creators will
- 4:09receive rings and they will be from many different corners of
- 4:12the platform. The head of fashion partnerships
- 4:14at Instagram, Eva Chen, spoke to the publication to reveal more
- 4:18about rings of the judging process.
- 4:20She said Instagram is a community of 3 billion people,
- 4:24and those 3 billion people probably reflect a billion
- 4:27different interests. So the criteria was really
- 4:29tough. I'm saying this as a judge,
- 4:31seeing the huge list of nominees and being able to cull it all
- 4:34down just to 25. It was a challenge.
- 4:37And I know that, like the other judges, it was too many great
- 4:40people to choose from. But really we were looking for
- 4:43people who take creative chances and who are always pushing the
- 4:46envelope and thinking about new ways to talk to their audience.
- 4:49Obviously, there are already existing awards for creators.
- 4:52Most of them mirror traditional award shows like the Streamys,
- 4:56but this is obviously kind of a different approach.
- 4:58It's hard to tell how successful this will be or if people will
- 5:01even care since it is still very early days, but it's positive to
- 5:06see a platform recognizing and rewarding creators.
- 5:09And I wonder if this is kind of Instagrams way of saying sorry
- 5:13that we took away the specialness of the Instagram
- 5:16verification and now anybody can have the blue tick beside their
- 5:20name. So now this is like another
- 5:22layer of being like, OK, anyone can buy a blue tick now.
- 5:25So how do we make creators who are still using the platform?
- 5:30How do we incentivize them to keep doing so?
- 5:33And how do we make them feel special and all of that kind of
- 5:36stuff? Because I do feel like the
- 5:38Instagram verification cheapen the platform so much in so many
- 5:42ways. I don't think the average user
- 5:43will care if they come across the creator with an Instagram
- 5:46ring, but I imagine creators will care a lot about this.
- 5:51OK, the next way that I have for you guys, It's a bit random for
- 5:53mini scroll, but it's still interesting.
- 5:56It's actually the tech scroll coded.
- 5:58I don't know you guys. Like I said, every single
- 6:00fucking story right now on the Internet has something to do
- 6:03with Taylor Swift, so these stories are just random.
- 6:07OK? Nintendo is suing a Reddit mod
- 6:10for $4.5 million. The Reddit user Archbox, whose
- 6:16real name is James Williams, is being sued by the video game
- 6:19company for piracy. So there is a popular subreddit
- 6:23called Switch Pirates which is a source quote on everything
- 6:27revolving around piracy on the Nintendo Switch from apps,
- 6:30games, development and support. That being said, if you enjoy a
- 6:33game and you have sufficient money, consider supporting the
- 6:36developers by buying it. So James is a moderator of this
- 6:39community. According to the motion filed
- 6:42against James, Nintendo alleges that he, quote facilitated a
- 6:45network of unauthorized shops that have offered to the public
- 6:49extensive libraries of pirated Nintendo Switch games for
- 6:53download. The filing also claims that
- 6:55James sent thousands of messages to users informing them about
- 6:58different piracy websites and also asked for donations of gift
- 7:02cards in return. Nintendo also allegedly sent a
- 7:05cease and desist letter last year.
- 7:07But James, while cooperative at first, later became a quote,
- 7:10combative and uncooperative. Allegedly.
- 7:13I'm sorry, I need to pause here. Why would you ever become
- 7:20combative and uncooperative against a company as big as
- 7:23Nintendo if they are threatening to sue you?
- 7:25What did you think was going to happen?
- 7:28As for the $4.5 million that Nintendo has put forth, Patricia
- 7:32Hernandez explains for Polygon that quote.
- 7:34The number is somewhat speculative in the sense that
- 7:36Nintendo is not arguing that the company suffered $4.5 million in
- 7:40losses. Rather it arrived at that number
- 7:43by looking at similar cases like the one involving Bungie and
- 7:47cheap makers where the Washington based company was
- 7:49awarded and millions in damages. I also may have said Bungie want
- 7:53wrong. Maybe it's Bungie.
- 7:54I assume it's Bungie. OK, Annabelle informed me that I
- 7:57said, and I think some of you guys counted this too, that I
- 8:00called him DJO instead of Joe. Like for Joe Carey like, but
- 8:06he's like his DJ name is like singer name or whatever is Joe a
- 8:09little bit. It's like spelled DJO.
- 8:11OK, I'm sorry, I had never heard it said out loud.
- 8:13That keeps happening to me lately and it's so embarrassing.
- 8:16OK. Nintendo has long had an issue
- 8:19with piracy apparently, where they've sued and reached
- 8:21settlements with various sites that hosted copyrighted games.
- 8:25Polygon, for example, also reported on the settlement reach
- 8:28between Nintendo and Love roms.com and Love retro.co
- 8:33previously. Now, there's a a lot of debate
- 8:35around lawsuits like this within the video games community.
- 8:38A popular phrase that's thrown around when kind of talking
- 8:41about this is quote If buying isn't owning, then pirating
- 8:44isn't stealing. And that logic implies that if
- 8:47purchasing a game doesn't lead to actual ownership, then having
- 8:52an unauthorized copy isn't technically stealing because
- 8:56ownership in the traditional sense doesn't exist.
- 9:00Put simply, you can't steal something if you can't own it.
- 9:03I don't know if that would necessarily apply in every
- 9:05context, but I think it's an interesting idea and it's not
- 9:10unique to video games. We've been having this
- 9:12discussion about how like, nobody owns anything anymore.
- 9:15You pay a licensing fee to companies to basically like rent
- 9:19or borrow their services. If you think about how back in
- 9:22the day you used to buy a physical like DVD or VHS, like a
- 9:25physical film, and now you just pay subscription money to
- 9:30services to temporarily watch that and they can take that away
- 9:35from you and you don't personally own it, so you can't
- 9:38do anything about that. Those are just a couple examples
- 9:40but we're seeing it everywhere. Like the whole economy feels
- 9:44like it's propped up by us paying subscriptions for things
- 9:47instead of us actually buying things anymore.
- 9:49OK the last story that we need to talk about, I do have like 2
- 9:52little tidbits at the end of very quick news.
- 9:55But the last full story is we need to talk about how the 6-7
- 9:59kid is seemingly getting into crypto.
- 10:02We haven't actually spoken about the 6-7 meme on mini scroll yet
- 10:05and I have no idea how that's the case, but we haven't.
- 10:08But 6-7 has become an extremely popular term online,
- 10:13specifically among younger Gen. Z and Gen.
- 10:15Alpha. It seemingly originated from the
- 10:18song Du Du by Skrilla, featuring G Herbo.
- 10:21As explained by Know Your Meme quote, this song became the
- 10:24subject of a variety of videos, including edits of the
- 10:27basketball player Lamello Ball, who is 6-7 in height, and lip
- 10:31dub memes that mention the number 67, with Tik Tokers
- 10:34saying it reminds them of 6-7. Since then, it's taken on a life
- 10:38of its own. I'm sure many of you guys have
- 10:40seen, but people are using it in many different contexts and most
- 10:43of the time it's pretty random and doesn't necessarily make
- 10:47sense. But that is basically part of
- 10:49the joke. It's like referential humor.
- 10:51Then from the 6-7 meme comes the 6-7 kid.
- 10:54So this was basically a video of a young boy at a basketball game
- 10:57that was posted on YouTube by Cam Wilder.
- 11:00When the camera panned to him, the boy started screaming 6-7.
- 11:03This bond a whole subset of memes being the Mason memes,
- 11:08which were basically a way to stereotype teen slash tween boys
- 11:11who overused the 6-7 meme and they as part of this meme also
- 11:16what has been described as having fluffy hair.
- 11:19Anyway, the kid in question, he's named Maverick Travillin
- 11:22and he has since started posting content himself under the handle
- 11:25at Mav 67 kid. He is 14 years old allegedly,
- 11:29which is crazy. And now this brings us to the
- 11:33actual story. OK he recently posted a video
- 11:36with some updates. In a clip on X he said we have a
- 11:40team in place and an overwhelming amount of collabs
- 11:42we are working on. We are ready to bring 6-7 into
- 11:47crypto. Reminder this kid is 14 now.
- 11:50When you look at his accounts he has at 6-7 on chain, LinkedIn,
- 11:54his BIOS on X and Instagram the associated websites read 6-7.
- 11:59Is the meme taking over the world now?
- 12:01It's official. It is now on chain tokenized by
- 12:04at mav. 6-7 kid not to own it, rather to steward it.
- 12:08He was the catalyst. And 6-7 is bigger than any one
- 12:11person. It belongs to the people, to the
- 12:14community that lives it, builds it and pushes it further than
- 12:17any meme has ever gone. Come on, any meme has ever gone.
- 12:21These people did not grow up in the 20 tens.
- 12:25Any meme. Come on. 6/7 is not bigger than
- 12:29any meme that has ever existed. Anyway.
- 12:32Unsurprisingly, many people feel this may end up being a rug
- 12:35pull. We will see how this plays out.
- 12:38I hope that he is not, you know, kind of getting himself into a
- 12:42situation like Haktua. But like, this seems to be
- 12:44happening a lot where it's like somebody goes like momentarily
- 12:47viral for something like this, like these ad hoc videos, right?
- 12:51They turn into a meme as happens and they're able to capitalize
- 12:55on that, which okay, sure, like good for you, honestly, good
- 12:58job, but then they get like absorbed by the crypto
- 13:02community, the crypto community like swoops in and then they end
- 13:06up kind of launching these like, you know, shitty meme coins and
- 13:11I don't know, we've seen it time and time again.
- 13:12It ends up being a rug pull. It ends up being like a low key
- 13:15scam. OK, the last two stories that I
- 13:17wanted to mention, like I said, these are very quick tidbits.
- 13:19They weren't really anything beyond just what I'm going to
- 13:22say, but there have been a lot of rumors recently that Alex
- 13:25Earl and Braxton Berrios were broken up.
- 13:28They haven't been together in a while, like physically they
- 13:30haven't posted each other in a while.
- 13:32Obviously Alex is doing dancing with the stars, so like that's
- 13:34part of it. But Braxton also hasn't gone to
- 13:37a Dancing with the Stars taping since Alex has been on Seeming.
- 13:41However, this week, Alex put an end to those rumors when she
- 13:44posted Braxton for his 30th birthday.
- 13:47And then the next story. I didn't want to make this a
- 13:49full story because it seems like people are not totally
- 13:52convinced, but Trisha Paytas may be starring in the next season
- 13:55of Euphoria. She mentioned that she had a
- 13:58role in Euphoria in the recent episode of Just Trish, but many
- 14:02Reddit users seem unsure if it was a joke or not Trish Crave,
- 14:06who we actually did interview one time, did post that Tricia
- 14:10told him about it personally about six months ago, possibly
- 14:14bringing some credibility back to these rumors.
- 14:17But a lot of people on Reddit seem to think that she's
- 14:19referring like making a joke in this clip, and she's referring
- 14:21to a time when she actually sent in an audition tape to Euphoria
- 14:25and didn't get it. Anyways guys, that's it for mini
- 14:27scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:29I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review,
- 14:32and subscribe. Please fill out our form down
- 14:36below for Annabelle, our fanfic form.
- 14:39I will talk to you tomorrow and high stakes back tomorrow.
- 14:42OK, bye.
