Transcript Welcome to HotTea for Friday, September 4, 2026. the chipmaker is buying Hugging Face. OpenAI released a critical-cyber model. The rest of the briefing moves through labor, defense, policy, infrastructure and health. the chipmaker buys Hugging Face for the path from models to compute. Nvidia is buying Hugging Face, and with it, a key path between open models and compute. Nvidia entered a definitive agreement to buy Hugging Face, according to a September 3 SEC filing. About $11.9 billion goes to Hugging Face stockholders. Nvidia also set up an equity retention program of up to $1 billion for employees who join. The companies expect the deal to close in the first half of 2027. It still needs regulatory approval and other closing conditions. Hugging Face is a major place to find open models, datasets and applications. Nvidia says more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use the platform. It also says 200,000 companies use it. Nvidia says the platform has 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications. Nvidia promised to keep Hugging Face open to other models, clouds, inference services and chips. The SEC filing puts that promise in the deal record. The transaction has not closed. The caveat is simple. Nvidia made the user, company and platform-scale claims. The SEC filing confirms the deal terms and closing conditions. Nvidia's promise about hardware and cloud choice is a claim about future conduct. Regulators and developers still need to test it. Regulators may press Nvidia on rival hardware, cloud placement and access to models. Developers get the cleaner test. After the deal, Hugging Face search, evaluation and deployment tools should show whether Nvidia and competing systems get the same treatment. Pricing and portability matter too. If developers can move models, datasets and workflows without new switching costs, Nvidia's open-platform promise will have evidence behind it. OpenAI releases its first model at the critical cyber level. OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on Thursday. Daybreak cybersecurity customers received access first. Paid ChatGPT plans and the API are due over the following week. OpenAI classified Astra at the critical cybersecurity level under its Preparedness Framework. The company says the model can find unknown flaws and build working exploit chains against hardened systems. In its internal tests, Astra used two previously unknown flaws as part of an exploit chain. The pressure: The company produced most of the capability and safety evidence. Its system card says advanced cyber access will remain restricted and that automated monitoring can pause legitimate work. TechCrunch also reported that Astra's reasoning can be harder to inspect as it uses fewer visible language tokens. What to watch: Watch independent tests of Astra's cyber capability and safeguards. The practical test is whether OpenAI can give defenders useful access without letting misuse through or pausing routine work too often. New York Fed survey points to retraining, not mass layoffs. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's August regional surveys found A I use at 61 percent of service firms and 51 percent of manufacturers. A year earlier, the shares were 40 percent and 26 percent. Among adopters, the median share of workers using A I was 17 percent at service firms and 7 percent at manufacturers. Four percent of service firms reported A I related layoffs over the prior six months. No manufacturers reported them. The pressure: This is a regional business survey covering New York and northern New Jersey, not a national labor count. Firms also reported quieter effects. Fifteen percent of service firms hired fewer workers because of A I, while 13 percent hired more workers to support it. What to watch: Entry-level hiring and worker use inside firms matter more than adoption headlines. Broad adoption with limited daily use can change quickly if agent systems become reliable enough to do full tasks. Pentagon says its Anthropic ban still stands. Under Secretary of Defense Emil Michael said Thursday that Anthropic remains a supply-chain risk for the Defense Department and its industrial base. The statement came one day after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the administration trusted Anthropic again. It also followed an August 27 federal ruling that found the Pentagon had illegally punished Anthropic and set aside the designation. The pressure: The Defense Department did not explain how its statement fits the court order. It also did not answer Reuters's request for comment. The public record now has conflicting positions from two cabinet departments and a federal court. Commerce's warmer stance toward Anthropic does not settle the separate Pentagon dispute. What to watch: Watch for an appeal, a request to stay the ruling, or written procurement guidance to defense contractors. Contract language on autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance should show whether the underlying dispute changed. G20 ministers back a lighter rulebook for A I. G20 innovation ministers adopted the Carolina Principles after a two-day meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The consensus calls for governments to use existing sector rules where they fit. It reserves new regulation for issues those rules cannot address. It also calls for research funding, faster commercialization, A I use in public services and workforce training. The pressure: The statement preserves each member's national authority and creates no binding enforcement system. The United States hosted the meeting and built the approach around flexible regulation. Agreement on principles does not mean China, the European Union and the United States will apply the same rules. What to watch: National laws, procurement rules and technical standards will show whether the Carolina Principles matter. The test comes when safety, copyright and competition disputes reach regulators. Crusoe triples its valuation on a $3 billion raise. Bloomberg reported that A I infrastructure company Crusoe raised more than $3 billion at a valuation near $30 billion. TechCrunch and Reuters carried Bloomberg's report. The new value is three times the $10 billion valuation from Crusoe's October 2025 round. Bloomberg also reported a five-year cloud contract worth about $13 billion to provide Jane Street with computing clusters for A I training and use. The pressure: Crusoe and Jane Street did not confirm the contract to Reuters. The funding and contract figures come from people familiar with private deals, not public filings. A large contract value also says little about the money, power and construction Crusoe needs to serve it. What to watch: Company confirmation, financing terms and data center delivery dates matter next. The cash matters only if Crusoe can turn contracted demand into powered computing capacity without fragile debt. A I scribes can miss what patients mean. A University of Edinburgh team reviewed 27 studies and reports on ambient A I scribes in health care. The review found that automated notes can reduce paperwork and capture clinical facts. It also found risks that summaries miss facial expressions, gestures, emotion and the way patients describe illness. Patients can also hold back sensitive information when they know a system records and processes the visit. The pressure: This is a review of a young body of evidence, not a clinical trial proving harm. The researchers say most studies focus on short-term productivity. They found less evidence about patient trust, clinician memory, skill development and use across different health systems. What to watch: Longer studies should measure note accuracy, patient disclosure and follow-up care. Health systems need to know whether a scribe preserves the patient's words, not only whether it saves clinicians time. That is the signal before the noise.
