Transcript
- 0:00Yo, we gotta start today with some real legacy business.
- 0:03Downtown Music Publishing just struck a deal to represent Biz Markie's catalog and
- 0:07his name, image, and likeness rights.
- 0:10Marcel Hall been gone since 2021, but this is the 40th anniversary of his debut
- 0:15album, and his widow Tara Hall is the one steering the ship as executor.
- 0:19Biz Markie sampled over fifteen hundred times, man.
- 0:23Fifteen hundred.
- 0:25That's not just a catalog, that's a whole sound library other artists built careers
- 0:30on top of.
- 0:31"Just a Friend" alone is DNA in half the culture.
- 0:35When you're that foundational, the publishing admin matters just as much as the hits
- 0:41did.
- 0:41See and that's what people sleep on.
- 0:43Y'all think the money stop when the artist stop touring or pass away,
- 0:47but sync licensing keep paying if somebody set it up right.
- 0:51Movies, commercials, samples, video games, that catalog still on the road even when
- 0:56the man ain't.
- 0:57That's the part I want everybody to sit with.
- 0:59Tara Hall said it herself, she building a blueprint for how to honor a legend while
- 1:04finding new ways for his work to live on.
- 1:06That's not just sentiment, that's estate structure.
- 1:09Recorded masters flowing through Revilo Records with Warner and Rhino on
- 1:13distribution, publishing sitting with Surrey Lane, and now Downtown handling admin
- 1:18and NIL.
- 1:19Every piece got a lane.
- 1:20This is knowledge of self on a whole other level.
- 1:23In this culture we always talk Supreme Mathematics, build and destroy,
- 1:28but the real build is what you leave behind when you not in the room no more.
- 1:33Biz Markie's estate is proof the paperwork you do while you living is the
- 1:38inheritance your family collect when you gone.
- 1:40Facts.
- 1:41And this is where the strategist in me gotta break it down plain.
- 1:45Publishing splits, sync rights, NIL, those are three separate income streams that
- 1:51most young artists don't even know they own separately.
- 1:54You can lose one and still eat off the other two, if you set it up right from day
- 1:59one instead of scrambling after you blow up.
- 2:01As a producer, I tell people all the time, know what publishing share you keeping
- 2:06before you ever step in the booth.
- 2:09The sound and the brand is what makes people remember you, but the split sheet is
- 2:13what makes sure your kids remember getting paid.
- 2:16For indie artists like me it's simpler than people think too.
- 2:20Register your publishing, own your masters if you can, keep your merch and your name
- 2:25tight in writing.
- 2:27You don't need a Warner deal to start building a Biz Markie type blueprint,
- 2:32you just need to stop treating the business side like homework you can skip.
- 2:36And that's the discipline.
- 2:38Forty years later they still collecting off a song that made people laugh and dance.
- 2:43That's what ownership and knowledge of self actually buy you,
- 2:46longevity past your own lifetime.
- 2:49So here's the takeaway for anybody listening building their own catalog right now.
- 2:53Get your publishing administration in order early, understand your NIL rights are
- 2:57separate from your masters, and put a real executor plan in place,
- 3:01not just a verbal promise to your cousin.
- 3:04Own your masters when you can, keep your merch and licensing paperwork clean,
- 3:08and treat every placement like it's building toward year forty,
- 3:12not just this quarter.
- 3:13Protect your sound and your samples, know your splits before the song drop,
- 3:18and respect the artists whose sound you building on top of.
- 3:21And above all, know self.
- 3:24Build something your family can stand on when you not around to explain it yourself.
- 3:29That's the real generational wealth.
- 3:32Appreciate y'all rocking with us, we out.
