- 1:28All right, guys, let's get right into this.
- 1:30Welcome everyone to another powerful episode of the
- 1:34ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life Show.
- 1:37Who am I?
- 1:38I'm John C.
- 1:39Morley.
- 1:39I am a serial entrepreneur.
- 1:43I'm an engineer, a marketing specialist, a video
- 1:46producer, a podcast host coach, a keynote speaker,
- 1:50a graduate student at Montclair State University, a
- 1:53passionate lifelong learner, and so grateful now to
- 1:57be a published author.
- 1:59Yes, guys, really grateful, and I am working
- 2:02on another book, The Truth About AI The
- 2:04World Is Never Gonna Tell You, so I'm
- 2:07excited to write that one.
- 2:08It'll be coming out sometime next year.
- 2:10I'm not sure exactly when, but it's gonna
- 2:12be coming out next year, so yeah, really
- 2:16excited about that, and hopefully you guys will
- 2:18really enjoy it, so yeah, that'll be coming
- 2:21out.
- 2:22My first book was Drain to Driven, a
- 2:24book all about burnout and how it takes
- 2:26away and robs you from the beautiful joys
- 2:30and pleasures you get in life because you
- 2:33decide that they're not important to you anymore,
- 2:37and you get too stressed.
- 2:38Ladies and gentlemen, our master topic for this
- 2:40week, that's what we do on Saturday.
- 2:42We start a brand new master topic.
- 2:44We roll all the way through the week,
- 2:46and we finish up on Friday just like
- 2:47we did yesterday.
- 2:48Our master topic for the week here of,
- 2:53this is season five.
- 2:55It is show number 36, episode one, and
- 2:58it's Stop Living a Life You Never Chose.
- 3:01You never chose.
- 3:02So here is a question that may make
- 3:04you uncomfortable in the best way.
- 3:06How many rules governing your life did you
- 3:10actually choose?
- 3:12We grow up surrounded by ideas about success,
- 3:17careers, money, relationships, education, status, and what we
- 3:21should accomplish by certain ages.
- 3:23Some ideas help us.
- 3:25Others become invisible instructions we follow without asking
- 3:29whether they belong in our lives or not.
- 3:31Today, challenging those assumptions is a big key
- 3:35for success, a really big key.
- 3:38So let's get right into this, okay?
- 3:41I think this is going to be really
- 3:42cool.
- 3:43So number one, guys, the question.
- 3:48One question inherited rules sometimes entered your life
- 3:51before you could even question them.
- 3:54They're just there.
- 3:55That does not make them wrong or even
- 3:58right.
- 3:58Decide what deserves to remain in your life
- 4:01and remove the things that don't.
- 4:04Okay, I think that's a really important thing
- 4:07for a lot of people to realize how
- 4:11that is going to work.
- 4:13So yeah, we'll definitely talk more about that.
- 4:16But number two, stop assuming normal means right.
- 4:20Normal tells you what is common amongst others,
- 4:23not what fits your values, your goals, your
- 4:26morals, circumstances, or the future that you actually
- 4:30want.
- 4:31Number three, notice whose expectations you carry when
- 4:35pressure appears.
- 4:36Ask where it came from.
- 4:38Is it yours or does it belong to
- 4:41family, friends, co-workers, society, or people online?
- 4:45And these are important questions to have because
- 4:47a lot of times these people's agenda, not
- 4:51intentionally, kind of rubs off on us because
- 4:54you're around them and you're being part of
- 4:57their ecosystem.
- 4:58So number four, ask why you want what
- 5:02you chase before giving years to a goal.
- 5:06Understand why.
- 5:07If it's mainly to impress people or prove
- 5:09something, you may be pursuing a destination you
- 5:13never chose to do.
- 5:17Number five, stop building for approval.
- 5:21Approval feels good, but it is unstable.
- 5:24Listen to feedback without giving others control of
- 5:28your direction.
- 5:30And it's okay to do that, guys.
- 5:33I think that's the most important thing.
- 5:38Number six, guys, separate desire from pressure.
- 5:45Ask yourself what you would still pursue if
- 5:49nobody were watching you.
- 5:51Which goal, which thing would you do?
- 5:54Which activity would you take part in?
- 5:57If you didn't have to answer to somebody
- 5:59else or say, oh, well, that's just the
- 6:03way it is.
- 6:06But it can be different.
- 6:08You don't have to allow your decisions to
- 6:10be tied into what other people want or
- 6:13they expect of you.
- 6:15Number seven, recognize the cost of fitting in.
- 6:19Belonging matters, but not when it requires shrinking
- 6:22your ambition.
- 6:23Silencing your ideas or pretending to be someone
- 6:26else just because you want a friend or
- 6:29because you want to fit into a group.
- 6:32That seems like a nightmare.
- 6:33That doesn't seem like the only thing you'd
- 6:35enjoy.
- 6:37Number eight, guys, do not follow paths only
- 6:41because they're popular.
- 6:44All the cool kids are doing it.
- 6:45A popular path may work for many people.
- 6:49Popularity alone is not a reason to choose
- 6:51it, okay?
- 6:52Number nine, define success for yourself.
- 6:57Success may include money, freedom, relationships, contribution, health,
- 7:02learning, creativity, or time.
- 7:05Decide what it means in your life and
- 7:08then go after it.
- 7:09Don't just go after something because you think
- 7:12it's the right thing.
- 7:14I think that's a real important thing, guys.
- 7:17I think that's a really important thing.
- 7:21Number 10, question goals you never selected.
- 7:25Ask yourself when you decided you wanted this.
- 7:28Did I really want this or who put
- 7:30this idea in my head?
- 7:32You may be pursuing it only because it
- 7:34seemed like the expected next step.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39Number 11, stop living by someone else's timeline.
- 7:43Another person's promotion, marriage, degree, home, business, or
- 7:48financial milestone does not mean you are behind.
- 7:53Their calendar is not your deadline.
- 7:55And I think the sooner you realize that,
- 7:58the sooner you can have a more joyful,
- 8:00beautiful, and amazing, amazing life, okay?
- 8:04I think that's a very important thing to
- 8:08understand.
- 8:09But a lot of people don't understand that
- 8:11today.
- 8:11They just don't understand it.
- 8:13Number 12, notice when comparison changes direction.
- 8:18What do I mean by that?
- 8:22Orange juice is good, by the way.
- 8:24Comparison can redirect your life.
- 8:27You see what someone else has and suddenly
- 8:29want something that mattered little yesterday.
- 8:33But now because someone else has it, you
- 8:36seem to be so interested in wanting it.
- 8:39What's the real reason you want it?
- 8:40I mean, that's the question that I want
- 8:42to ask you guys.
- 8:43Number 13, refuse pressure that does not serve
- 8:48your future.
- 8:49Before saying yes because you feel pressured, ask
- 8:53whether it supports the future you want to
- 8:56build, right?
- 8:59Are you building a future because it's something
- 9:02you want, feel, like, and love?
- 9:04Or are you just becoming part of a
- 9:06transaction?
- 9:09And if you don't know, it's time to
- 9:12basically evaluate.
- 9:15Am I a transactional person or am I
- 9:19a valued person?
- 9:22Transactional means that you do everything for something.
- 9:28It could be money, it could be a
- 9:30favor, it could be anything.
- 9:34But you do it for that.
- 9:37They call it, you know, tack for tack,
- 9:38tick for tick, tack for tack.
- 9:40And so that's the thing, okay?
- 9:48You want to do something because it fulfills
- 9:51you.
- 9:52Not because, you know, there's something you can
- 9:56get in return.
- 9:57You know, when people in the world have
- 10:03something and you become friends with them just
- 10:07because they have something, but what if you
- 10:11became friends with somebody who couldn't give you
- 10:14anything?
- 10:14Who couldn't share anything with you that's financial?
- 10:21What if they just had themselves?
- 10:23What if they just had their personality?
- 10:24Would that be okay?
- 10:26I hope so.
- 10:28Number 14, choose values before appearances.
- 10:32A life can look successful and still feel
- 10:34empty, guys.
- 10:37Choose what matters after the titles.
- 10:39Titles are nice, but they're not everything.
- 10:43The photographs, the applause, and the recognition, they
- 10:46disappear.
- 10:48Choose the person for who they are inside.
- 10:53Choose the cause for what the heart of
- 10:55it means, not what the media has made
- 11:00it out to be.
- 11:01Number 15, do not confuse acceptance with alignment.
- 11:05Approval does not make a choice right for
- 11:08you guys.
- 11:09Disagreement does not make it wrong.
- 11:11Alignment comes from knowing what you value.
- 11:16What you value, not somebody else values, I
- 11:18said what you value.
- 11:24That's important, guys.
- 11:25That's very important.
- 11:28Number 16, I want you to make a
- 11:33choice to decide which expectations, guys, deserve attention.
- 11:38Because let's face it, ladies and gentlemen, not
- 11:41every expectation is harmful.
- 11:44Some teach integrity, discipline, responsibility, and accountability.
- 11:52Evaluate them instead of accepting or rejecting them
- 11:56automatically.
- 11:57So that means don't judge a book by
- 12:00its cover.
- 12:01Don't make a decision because of the first
- 12:04impression you get.
- 12:05I know you always hear the phrase, you
- 12:08don't get a second chance to make a
- 12:09first impression.
- 12:10I get it.
- 12:13But wouldn't it be nice if we had
- 12:14a second chance to make that impression, to
- 12:17not reject just because of the cover of
- 12:20the book?
- 12:21Or just because of the way somebody looks?
- 12:24Or what somebody said the first time?
- 12:26Wouldn't it be nice to actually dig a
- 12:28little deeper?
- 12:29Number 17, give yourself, actually allow yourself permission
- 12:35to want something different.
- 12:37Your fulfillment may not look like everyone else's.
- 12:41And surprise, surprise.
- 12:43I think that's a real important thing.
- 12:47Okay, very important thing to understand.
- 12:53Your fulfillment may not look like everyone else's.
- 12:59Different, ladies and gentlemen, I want to say
- 13:00this again.
- 13:01I've said it before, does not mean wrong.
- 13:06Okay, different does not mean better.
- 13:10It doesn't.
- 13:11It doesn't mean better at all.
- 13:15Number 18, stop automatically saying yes to convention
- 13:21tradition.
- 13:23It can hold wisdom, but it can also
- 13:25become habits without thought.
- 13:29Maybe you want to be the nice guy
- 13:30or the nice lady, but you constantly say
- 13:33yes to people.
- 13:35So I had a situation with this about
- 13:38a week ago.
- 13:39Somebody wanted my help for something.
- 13:41And I always would jump in and want
- 13:42to help.
- 13:42And I said to myself, wait a minute,
- 13:44this is going to be a time when
- 13:47I'm in school.
- 13:48That's going to be my day that I
- 13:49am in school.
- 13:52And I need to give myself the time
- 13:55and respect that I need to be able
- 13:56to do my work, right?
- 13:59And when I told the person what I
- 14:01was doing and what was happening, they didn't
- 14:03really pay much attention.
- 14:07They were just being selfish to themselves.
- 14:11Okay, don't just do some things because they're
- 14:14a habit.
- 14:15Because what we're going to find later on
- 14:17is we're going to have regret.
- 14:19I don't want you guys to have regret.
- 14:21But if you agree to something just because
- 14:24it's there, or because other people say it's
- 14:28there, I think that's a real important thing
- 14:31to understand.
- 14:33Okay, it's a very important thing.
- 14:41Okay, that's an important thing.
- 14:44Guys, very, very important thing.
- 14:52And we got to become aware with it,
- 14:54right?
- 14:55We got to know that just because somebody
- 15:01else says it's okay, it doesn't mean it's
- 15:04okay for us.
- 15:06It doesn't mean we have to like it.
- 15:12We're each our own person.
- 15:14We have our own individuality.
- 15:16We have our own freedom.
- 15:21And we have choice.
- 15:25And our choice should allow us to do
- 15:29the things that we want in our life
- 15:30as long as it doesn't harm, hurt, or
- 15:33disparage another person.
- 15:36That's it.
- 15:38I'm not talking about competition, guys.
- 15:40Competition is different.
- 15:41Number 19, recognize when tradition becomes limitation.
- 15:46When we have always done it this way
- 15:48is the only reason.
- 15:51Consider whether another approach could serve you better.
- 15:53Well, we've always done it this way.
- 15:55This is the way it's been done for
- 15:56100 years.
- 15:57Well, can we do it this way?
- 15:59Well, no.
- 16:01Well, because they don't want change.
- 16:05A lot of times people just don't think
- 16:09about changing because that's who they are.
- 16:11And they are not even that person.
- 16:13They became this because of someone else, because
- 16:17of something that rubbed off on them.
- 16:21And they go their whole lives and they're
- 16:22like, I don't like what I'm doing.
- 16:26Well, because they got in the habit of
- 16:30saying yes, and that yes was probably not
- 16:33something that they wanted to say.
- 16:43I think that's an important piece that most
- 16:46people miss in their lives.
- 16:52Most people become tuned into one way, a
- 17:05way that they didn't really want, but a
- 17:08way that suddenly they just fell into.
- 17:15That's important, guys.
- 17:17Very important to realize that you become the
- 17:23people you hang around.
- 17:25So if you don't like what they're doing,
- 17:28it might be time to find new friends.
- 17:31Number 20, guys.
- 17:33I encourage you to think independently before acting
- 17:36collectively.
- 17:37Listen, gather information, seek expertise, and consider perspectives.
- 17:41I want to share something to you.
- 17:42A lot of times, people will give you
- 17:47this great burst of enthusiasm.
- 17:49They love what you're doing.
- 17:50They love the idea.
- 17:52And then they say they want to help.
- 17:54You know what happens?
- 17:56You reach back out to them after a
- 17:58little while, and they tell you they're busy.
- 18:02They have no time.
- 18:05However, I'd be happy to work with you
- 18:08if you'd pay me.
- 18:12A little bit of a disappointment, isn't it?
- 18:15Remember to use your judgment rather than automatically
- 18:19following the crowd.
- 18:21I think everyone follows the crowd.
- 18:22I used to say, you know, if he
- 18:24jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you jump
- 18:26off too?
- 18:27Yeah, no.
- 18:29I mean, it was like you're just repeating
- 18:32everything, all right?
- 18:35That's the thing.
- 18:36So many people today are trying to fit
- 18:41into a group, but the thing about the
- 18:45group is the group has nothing they want.
- 18:48The group is there, and they feel that
- 18:52if they don't get in, then they're nobody.
- 18:57And that's a bad thing, guys.
- 19:00Don't let crowd or peer pressure set you
- 19:03up.
- 19:03Number 21, stop needing everyone to understand.
- 19:07People may evaluate your life through their priorities,
- 19:11not your own.
- 19:12Explain respectfully.
- 19:13But do not require unanimous approval to move
- 19:17forward.
- 19:17If you do that, you're going to always
- 19:19be putting your dreams on hold forever.
- 19:25I think that's an important one, guys.
- 19:27A very, very important one.
- 19:29Number 22, I encourage you to choose direction
- 19:34over conformity.
- 19:35Conformity asks, what is everyone doing?
- 19:38If they're doing that, then I guess I
- 19:39have to do that.
- 19:40No.
- 19:41Direction asks, where am I going?
- 19:45Do I know my destination before selecting my
- 19:47path?
- 19:48Or am I just waiting for somebody else
- 19:50to tell me the ways they're going so
- 19:52I can just join along?
- 19:53And I think that's a big problem, to
- 19:55just join along, okay?
- 19:57We need to be intentional about where and
- 20:01why we're going somewhere.
- 20:03Number 23, guys, build around what truly matters.
- 20:07Your calendar, spending, habits, relationships, and attention reveal
- 20:12your priorities.
- 20:13If what matters gets only left over time,
- 20:18it's time to reorganize your life and change
- 20:20your priorities.
- 20:23Number 24, stop performing a life that looks
- 20:28successful.
- 20:29You're not here to maintain an image.
- 20:32If looking successful costs what makes success meaningful,
- 20:36the performance hasn't taken over yet.
- 20:39Number 25, ask whether your goals still excite
- 20:43you.
- 20:43A goal that made sense years ago may
- 20:46no longer fit into who you are, you
- 20:50know, your beliefs, your morals.
- 20:53Experience changes you.
- 20:56That is not failure, guys.
- 20:59Number 26, let's let priorities become personal.
- 21:03Your priorities should reflect your responsibilities, your values,
- 21:07your ambitions, your relationships, and your circumstances.
- 21:12They all need to make sense in your
- 21:15life.
- 21:15If they don't, it's time to throw them
- 21:17out.
- 21:19Number 27, stop outsourcing major decisions.
- 21:23Advice and expertise matter, but you live with
- 21:25the consequences.
- 21:27Do not hand someone else permanent control of
- 21:30your direction.
- 21:32You will be sorry.
- 21:35You will be sorry.
- 21:37Number 28, please be intentional about what you
- 21:42pursue.
- 21:43I can't say this enough.
- 21:44Time cannot be replenished.
- 21:46Before giving something months or years, know why
- 21:50it deserves that much time of your life.
- 21:54Number 29, you do not have to live
- 21:56the default life.
- 21:58You can build it differently, change the direction,
- 22:01redefine success, start again, or decide that what
- 22:05everyone else wants is not important to you.
- 22:12Number 30, guys, choose your life before someone
- 22:15else chooses it for you.
- 22:17Without deliberate decisions, outside expectations will decide for
- 22:21you.
- 22:21Your life can become a collection of goals
- 22:23and obligations you never consciously selected.
- 22:28You know, somebody once said to me, John,
- 22:30you know, have your own dreams and build
- 22:35them.
- 22:35Because if you don't, you'll be building someone
- 22:39else's.
- 22:40See, that is the challenge for today.
- 22:44Take an honest inventory.
- 22:46Look at what you're chasing, worrying about, spending
- 22:50time on and what you believe you are
- 22:53supposed to accomplish.
- 22:55Then ask yourself, who decided this?
- 22:59Was it me or someone else?
- 23:02Some rules may be worth keeping.
- 23:06Keep them because you examined and chose them,
- 23:09not because they were handed to you.
- 23:12That's the important thing.
- 23:13You choose what stays in your life.
- 23:16You may also discover that you are racing
- 23:19toward goals you do not want anymore.
- 23:22Comparing yourself to lives you would not choose
- 23:24or maintaining appearances that no longer reflect what
- 23:28matters.
- 23:29That is where intentional living begins.
- 23:33You do not need to rebel against everything.
- 23:36Reject good advice or ignore responsibility.
- 23:40You need awareness, guys, and not just once.
- 23:44It needs to become part of your daily
- 23:45life diet.
- 23:47Know why you say yes.
- 23:49Know why you say no.
- 23:52Know why you chase on opportunity.
- 23:54Know why you build a career.
- 23:58Know why you spend your time where you
- 24:00spend it.
- 24:02Know what success means when nobody else gets
- 24:05to answer for you.
- 24:07There is a tremendous difference between building a
- 24:10life intentionally and waking up years later inside
- 24:13one of the assembled from everyone else's expectations
- 24:17life.
- 24:19And the problem is once you get into
- 24:20that life, it's so hard to get out
- 24:22of it because your mind and body have
- 24:24become conditioned to just accept things that you
- 24:28really don't want.
- 24:31This week, I want you to notice the
- 24:33invisible rules influencing your decisions.
- 24:37Do not automatically reject them.
- 24:39Quietly question them.
- 24:41Ask whether they are still a fit for
- 24:43me.
- 24:43Ask whether they support who you're becoming.
- 24:46Ask whether they help you build something meaningful
- 24:49or simply help you look successful.
- 24:52Ask whether you are living deliberately or following
- 24:54default settings someone else handed you.
- 24:57Ladies and gentlemen, if you do not know
- 24:59my name by now, I'm John Seymour.
- 25:02I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 25:04And this has been another amazing episode of
- 25:09Inspirations for Your Life.
- 25:11You do not need everyone to approve of
- 25:14the life you're creating, but you should be
- 25:17able to look at your decisions and recognize
- 25:20yourself in them.
- 25:22That's key, guys.
- 25:23I want you to question the rules.
- 25:27I know when you're in school, they always
- 25:28say, you can't question the rules.
- 25:29You're not allowed to question the rules.
- 25:35Question the rules is different from being rude.
- 25:40You can actually question or ask a question
- 25:43about it.
- 25:44The rule may not change if you're under
- 25:46a certain thing, but the rules that you
- 25:48are following define what matters to you.
- 25:54Choose your direction from your passion and your
- 25:58core values.
- 25:59Choose your life before someone else chooses it
- 26:02for you.
- 26:03As I said before, if you have no
- 26:07goals and you have no ambitions, then you'll
- 26:14be helping build someone else's dreams, their goals,
- 26:19their ambitions.
- 26:21Have your own.
- 26:23Live from purpose.
- 26:26Live from intention.
- 26:29Get joy in everything you do.
- 26:34Not because you have to, ladies and gentlemen,
- 26:36but because you should want to do this.
- 26:42I know in the beginning, it's not easy.
- 26:45It's not like somebody's going to hand you
- 26:47a book and say, here you go.
- 26:48It's not going to happen.
- 26:53The persistence, the tenacity, the passion that we
- 26:59have keeps the fire burning.
- 27:03But if the fire ever goes out, we
- 27:06need to make sure that it's laced strongly
- 27:08with our discipline.
- 27:09For the discipline can always get our fire
- 27:12restarted again.
- 27:18That's how success works.
- 27:21It's not flipping a switch on and you
- 27:22become successful.
- 27:23I'm sorry.
- 27:24That's not how it works, guys.
- 27:28There's thought.
- 27:30There's energy.
- 27:35There's actions you need to take.
- 27:41There's lessons you need to learn.
- 27:48And knowing that you don't know everything, knowing
- 27:51that everything that gets built didn't get built
- 27:53just by you.
- 27:54It got built by a team.
- 27:56You may need to involve other people.
- 27:59Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John C.
