- 0:23Speaker 1: dot com, Lizpeak. How you doing.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm terrific. Thank you for having me.
- 0:27Speaker 1: On Mark Hey, great to have you. The FED decision
- 0:31Speaker 1: later today. They'll do nothing right, no change.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Probably do nothing. And you know, I've been thinking about
- 0:39Speaker 2: this a lot, of course everyone has. So what is
- 0:42Speaker 2: the biggest issue right now? What? You know, you just
- 0:45Speaker 2: had Congress come together in a bipartisan fashion to pass
- 0:50Speaker 2: a housing bill. Congress almost never does anything in a
- 0:54Speaker 2: bipartisan fashion, and as Steve Forbes said to me yesterday
- 0:58Speaker 2: on set, you know, it's a problem if it's bipartisan.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And I kind of agree with him. I mean, I
- 1:03Speaker 2: think this is a little bit of a bone headed bill.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Some of it's good, some of the releasing and removing
- 1:10Speaker 2: of permitting and so forth is very important. But what's
- 1:13Speaker 2: the biggest issue it's affordability. What's that all about. It's
- 1:17Speaker 2: mortgage rates. Mortgage rates are too high. The Fed needs
- 1:20Speaker 2: to lower rates. And Mark just ask yourself what impact
- 1:24Speaker 2: does raising or lowering the FED rate have on oil prices?
- 1:29Speaker 2: The answer is zero. So oil prices are high obviously
- 1:34Speaker 2: because of the war. They've gone up a fair amount
- 1:37Speaker 2: thirty percent or more. And yes, that's going to feed
- 1:40Speaker 2: into all kinds of products, petrochemicals, plastics, fertilizers, et cetera.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Does it have anything to do with interest rates that
- 1:48Speaker 2: the Feder setting, No, it has none. So you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: usually the Canesiine approach is the raise interest rates to
- 1:56Speaker 2: damp and demand. No one's going to drive less or
- 2:00Speaker 2: consume less plastics because the FED lowers interest rates. That
- 2:04Speaker 2: is a fact. So you know, I think the two
- 2:08Speaker 2: issues are totally separate. I think the Fed should acknowledge that.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I hope they do, and they set the stage for
- 2:16Speaker 2: lower interest rates as the year goes on, because we
- 2:18Speaker 2: do have a pretty sluggish employment market right now. There
- 2:23Speaker 2: is their dual mandate. As you well know, they're supposed
- 2:25Speaker 2: to be watching the jobs market and inflation. And you know,
- 2:30Speaker 2: what we really need to do is to get Kevin
- 2:33Speaker 2: worsh in there as head of the FED. It's not
- 2:36Speaker 2: a guarantee that he's going to lead the FED and
- 2:38Speaker 2: lowering rates, but it's sure a pretty good bet that
- 2:41Speaker 2: Jay Powell isn't going to do that. And we have
- 2:43Speaker 2: this absurd to me situation where Janine Piro, who I
- 2:48Speaker 2: like and admire very much, is hanging on to what
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think is a completely flimsy and inconsequential pursuit of J.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Powell is supposedly having mismanaged or possibly even crookedly managed
- 3:06Speaker 2: the building of the FED headquarters. For heaven's sakes, get
- 3:10Speaker 2: rid of this, get rid of it, get rid of
- 3:12Speaker 2: Tom Tillis's objection to getting the Kevin worst nomination through,
- 3:16Speaker 2: and let's start over with a new, better, more efficient,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and more up to date Federal Reserve, which is what
- 3:21Speaker 2: has to happen. Well, J Powell, long Rune, Yeah, apologies.
- 3:27Speaker 1: J Powell. Building a new FED building for what should
- 3:29Speaker 1: have cost six hundred million ended up costing three billions
- 3:32Speaker 1: of definite definite mismanagement there. But you're right, Yeah, court
- 3:36Speaker 1: case is.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Going to go a criminal. No, he's not a criminal.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I mean I think he's an ineffectual FED chair and
- 3:43Speaker 2: obviously a very ineffectual overseer of a construction project. But
- 3:48Speaker 2: if every construction manager in Washington, DC who oversaw a
- 3:52Speaker 2: cost overrun went to jail, you know, the streets would
- 3:57Speaker 2: be a lot lighter. Let's just say that.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know, you can't manage the construction of
- 4:01Speaker 1: a building if you're that unaware, if you're that bumbling,
- 4:04Speaker 1: why should you manage the American economy?
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah? Okay, so let's get rid of him. And the
- 4:09Speaker 2: only way we're going to get rid of him is
- 4:10Speaker 2: by replacing him. And we can't replace him now because
- 4:14Speaker 2: we have, you know, a Republican supposedly Republican senator who's
- 4:18Speaker 2: saying he won't further the nomination unless they drop these charges.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So this is sort of easy in my head. We
- 4:24Speaker 2: want Jay Powell out, get rid of this.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah, when would we get a new FED chairman? As
- 4:29Speaker 1: it may that federman? And yes, we get a new
- 4:33Speaker 1: FED chairman. J Powell can stay on the FED board, correct.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He can for I think it's two and a half
- 4:39Speaker 2: more years after that. Oh okay, well, I mean the
- 4:43Speaker 2: question is will he do that. I'm not sure that
- 4:45Speaker 2: he will. It is not very I mean this is
- 4:47Speaker 2: true in corporate world too. It's not very much fun
- 4:50Speaker 2: to see the top role and then hang around to
- 4:53Speaker 2: sort of see what happens next. That, generally speaking, is
- 4:56Speaker 2: not a recipe for success.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, the Save Act, it makes perfect sense to everybody
- 5:03Speaker 1: in America. You got to show your driver's license, your
- 5:06Speaker 1: photo ID to vote. You got to do that to
- 5:08Speaker 1: enter any building in Manhattan. You got to show that
- 5:11Speaker 1: to buy prescriptions for a million things. So what do
- 5:16Speaker 1: you think will it ever you have to do it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: To shovel snow under mayor Mom, Donnie? I have two
- 5:21Speaker 2: means of identification mark no.
- 5:23Speaker 1: One.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I also think very few people are challenging. Certainly nobody
- 5:27Speaker 2: on the right is challenging the need for voter ID.
- 5:30Speaker 2: The problem now is they sort of gunked up this
- 5:33Speaker 2: bill with issues that they knew that Democrats were going
- 5:37Speaker 2: to have a hard time voting for, like transgender you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: letting boys play in girls' sports and all these things.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I agree with everything in the bill, but my view
- 5:48Speaker 2: is that they should have I think they should jump
- 5:50Speaker 2: the whole thing and have a one issue bill on
- 5:53Speaker 2: the floor. The one issue is voter ID make Democrats
- 5:57Speaker 2: vote against something that eighty plus percent of the country applauds.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And I really think that is the way to pass
- 6:05Speaker 2: this And frankly, the Republicans in Congress need a few
- 6:08Speaker 2: wins right now. They need to actually pass some things
- 6:11Speaker 2: to have the President sign it. And let's have voter
- 6:14Speaker 2: ID and if you want to complicate it a little
- 6:17Speaker 2: bit by having the registration a proof of citizenship, I
- 6:20Speaker 2: applaud that as well. I know Democrats have all kinds
- 6:23Speaker 2: of objections to that. Dick Blumenthal just came out and
- 6:26Speaker 2: said he didn't know where his birth certificate was, and
- 6:29Speaker 2: I tweeted back that if he doesn't know where his
- 6:31Speaker 2: passport is, then he's really got a cognitive problem. But
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, I think there we could have this bill simpler,
- 6:38Speaker 2: better and again make it clear to the American public
- 6:42Speaker 2: what's in it. Now you've got all this other stuff,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and I think that was a huge mistake.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, a while back, I wasn't sure where
- 6:48Speaker 1: my birth certificate was and I went online and there's
- 6:51Speaker 1: about ten thousand sites that you can go to that
- 6:53Speaker 1: will get you over you get a copy, get a
- 6:55Speaker 1: replacement birth certificate in two weeks. It's easy to do so, Hey,
- 7:00Speaker 1: this Joe Kent, this counter terrorism whatever he is, who
- 7:04Speaker 1: quit and protest? How long before we see him as
- 7:08Speaker 1: a host on MSNBC or CNN.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Ah, probably that could happen, although he is I think
- 7:15Speaker 2: emerging as a bit of a wing nut. And what
- 7:18Speaker 2: I mean by that is he's really on the far
- 7:20Speaker 2: reaches of this sort of Israeli conspiracy plus anti Semitism,
- 7:30Speaker 2: right in league with people like Tucker Carlson, Megan Kelly
- 7:34Speaker 2: and so forth who think this whole war is about Israel.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And I have to say, Mark, of all the presidents
- 7:41Speaker 2: we've had in recent times, or even political leaders, the
- 7:45Speaker 2: idea that Donald Trump is being led by the nose
- 7:49Speaker 2: by a foreign ally Benjamin Netanyahu, is so ludicrous to me.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I don't know anybody who is more self determined, let
- 7:59Speaker 2: us say, than Donald Trump, right, I mean, and completely
- 8:04Speaker 2: does what he wants to do when he wants to
- 8:06Speaker 2: do it, et cetera. Joe Kent, yes, is now a
- 8:10Speaker 2: darling of the left because he's come out critical of
- 8:12Speaker 2: the war. But you know, look at what he said
- 8:17Speaker 2: in interviews just two years ago about Iran being a
- 8:20Speaker 2: major threat to this country. It's really almost impossible for
- 8:24Speaker 2: me to believe. By the way, a couple of years
- 8:27Speaker 2: ago he was talking about maybe running for office. I
- 8:29Speaker 2: have to think some of this is maybe in preparation
- 8:32Speaker 2: for some attempt to run for office. I don't know, obviously,
- 8:35Speaker 2: I don't know, but I think it's incredibly phony baloney.
- 8:41Speaker 2: And you know that's the kind of heroes the left
- 8:43Speaker 2: have right now.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, very interesting. Well, everybody read Liz Peak's columns, watch
